you probably know we're very excited to start yet another HBO series

launching this fall. Watchmen.

And if you're not familiar with Watchmen, it started as a graphic novel
spk_0
from Comic Book Genius Alan Moore and exploded onto the big screen in 2009 film adaptation

that not everybody loved, but I sure did.
spk_0
The TV show picks up in the same alternate universe where the superheroes are outlaws
spk_0
and it features some of the same characters, but a very different cast and storyline.
spk_0
A Watchmen was created and developed by Damon Lindelof for HBO
spk_0
with Lindelof serving as the executive producer and writer.
spk_0
And there'll be nine episodes in the first season.
spk_0
Yeah, I've never been a big comic book guy, other than GI Joe,
spk_0
when I was real little.
spk_0
But for me, Lindelof and the leftovers, I mean,
spk_0
it's one of my top three series.
spk_0
I loved what he did with law, Stephen Till the end.
spk_0
He was the executive producer and the joint show runner.
spk_0
Him and HBO combined.
spk_0
I don't see any way this goes wrong.
spk_0
And with the success recently, we were talking about earlier with Amazon's The Boys.
spk_0
I think there's more of an appetite for an alternate take on the Marvel Avengers,
spk_0
glossy, happy superhero.
spk_0
So I think something dark could really hit with the audience.
spk_0
And if superhero things aren't really your cup of tea,
spk_0
stick with us on this for a couple of reasons.
spk_0
One, if you saw the 2009 Watchmen, one of the most common complaints was people
spk_0
at that time were not ready for this kind of a comic book movie.
spk_0
It was very, very dark.
spk_0
And this series promises to get a lot darker.
spk_0
It's set in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 2019.
spk_0
There's no internet. There's no smartphones.
spk_0
And it's 34 years after the graphic novel ends.
spk_0
You've got Robert Redford starring as the longest serving president of the US.
spk_0
He was elected in 1992.
spk_0
And it deals with all sorts of stuff, including militant groups, white supremacists.
spk_0
And it promises to be very, very violent, very, very dark, and satisfying for a guy like me.

Yeah, I think Lyndallov also has a history of comic books.
spk_0
If I'm not mistaken, I think he wrote a six issue series with Marvel.
spk_0
I think it was like Wolverine and the Hulk.
spk_0
So he has some experience.
spk_0
He's also done some good sci-fi films, aliens versus cowboys,
spk_0
Prometheus, then that into the darkness, Star Trek movie.

And they're not so good tomorrow, land.
spk_0
But I think everything he's done, especially coming off the heels of leftovers,
spk_0
I'm excited. I think it's going to be good.

HBO hasn't misled us.
spk_0
The exception of maybe the end of season eight of Game of Thrones, but that's debatable.

You still can't question the quality.
spk_0
You can't question the dedication that they put into all the series they do.
spk_0
So this will have all the resources, the talent to be a successful series.
spk_0
And now let's just see if they can put it all together.

Also co-hosting the podcast with us will be our old friend, the King Bee.

He co-hosted American Gods, Andrew Detective.

And a few episodes of Shat The Movies.

King Bee and I go way back on the Watchmen.

He actually gave me the graphic novel when we were teenagers.

And we were big DC fans at the time.

He hands me this book and he actually wrote in the first page of it.

This is the greatest book you're ever going to read.
spk_0
I want you to have it.
spk_0
And it quickly became my favorite comic book.
spk_0
It's been with me for years.
spk_0
And I'm a massive fan.
spk_0
He is incredibly knowledgeable about Alan Moore's work,
spk_0
the creator of Watchmen.
spk_0
And the King Bee has more comic books than any human being I know.
spk_0
He spends his Wednesdays at the comic shop.
spk_0
This is a guy we need on the podcast.

Yes.
spk_0
He owns more comic books and has more knowledge about Alan Moore than any adult should have.
spk_0
Yes, no reason spending this much time to it.
spk_0
So if we wanted a subject matter expert, I think King Bee is perfect.

The way we're going to cover Watchmen is a little bit different than we did Game of Thrones.

If you're joining us from Game of Thrones and a little bit different than we do, Shat The Movies.

So Watchmen drops on HBO October 20th.

Before then, we'll be doing a preview episode to get you kind of caught up in this world.

Definitely encourage you to read the graphic novel or at least watch the 2009 movie.

It is three hours long, three and a half hours if you have the ultimate cut.

But it's worth the time to sit down and do it.

Roger and I just did it last week.
spk_0
And we'll be doing weekly deep dives that will drop every Tuesday.

So one episode per episode of Watchmen for the entire run.

And what we did for Game of Thrones was we had to put our movies podcast,

Shat The Movies Unhold, because we were doing three episodes a week.

We did an instant take, a deep dive, and then a listener email portion.
spk_0
The amount of time that took, we had to shut Shat The Movies down.
spk_0
And we have a dedicated large audience of Shat The Movies listeners right now.

We just crossed a million downloads for Shat The Movies alone.
spk_0
So we don't want to abandon you this time.

So the plan is that Roger and I will continue on with movies so that there's not a break in movie coverage as weekly.

We'll take on a few hosts here and there co-hosts to bridge the gap.

Maybe Jean could jump in or we're going to jump over to the Watchmen.

So that way we don't forget about the movie's audience, because that's near and dear to my heart.

That was our first podcast.
spk_0
And I think that way we can try to meet both audiences and keep everybody happy.

And we won't have to stop one or the other.
spk_0
