Like this since I was 13 when I read Visual Answered And Yes
spk_0
It was designed by GeorgReader
spk_0
If you go across, check it, had to get it, get it stuck..
spk_0
Here it is.
spk_0
Mom?
spk_0
Yes, Mike.
spk_0
Whoa okay.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
spk_0
I'm thinking about it sometime maybe tomorrow, but we'll see.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
Here we go.
spk_0
We get that quick.
spk_0
There we go.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
Hello and welcome to Roger and me, aka Roger, eberted me, a weekly movie review podcast featuring
spk_0
myself, Mark Dusik of Markreviewsmovies.com and Brett Arnold of Yahoo Entertainment and the
spk_0
new flesh podcast.
spk_0
This week we're going to have seven new movies to talk about.
spk_0
Those include the smashing machine with Dwayne Johnson playing real life MMA fighter Mark
spk_0
Kerr, VHS Halloween, which is now the annual tradition of the VHS franchise on shutter.
spk_0
We just started covering these, you know, I started covering them.
spk_0
It's been a fun experience.
spk_0
It's been a fun experience.
spk_0
You had to catch up with I think the last one.
spk_0
All of them.
spk_0
I had to catch up with all of them because the last one was number seven.
spk_0
Mark had to watch six movies before he could get to the seventh.
spk_0
I mean, he really didn't have to because it's horror anthology, but I appreciate his dedication
spk_0
to getting it right.
spk_0
It was a good excuse to do it.
spk_0
It was a very good excuse to do it.
spk_0
But now we're covering them annually as well.
spk_0
Play Dirty with Mark Wahlberg, written and directed by Shane Black, who is a writer, director
spk_0
that some movie fans will know.
spk_0
Good boy, a horror movie, a haunted house movie specifically from the perspective of a dog.
spk_0
Bone Lake.
spk_0
Also a horror.
spk_0
It's October.
spk_0
So we're going to be covering horror movies a lot this month, more than usual.
spk_0
And coyotes with Justin Long and Kate Bosworth, real life married couple playing a married
spk_0
couple in the Hollywood Hills, who are attacked by coyotes.
spk_0
And are we good documentary about Mark Marin?
spk_0
Right, how are you doing?
spk_0
I'm good.
spk_0
I feel ready to talk about these seven movies this week.
spk_0
I'm really excited to talk about a couple of them actually.
spk_0
I feel like I have a strong take on at least a few, a couple of these.
spk_0
And there's one I'm, you know, I'm really disappointed in one of these movies that I was really
spk_0
looking forward to.
spk_0
So I feel like there's going to be a lot of ups and downs on this episode.
spk_0
How are you doing?
spk_0
Oh fine.
spk_0
Just fine.
spk_0
Good.
spk_0
Just fine.
spk_0
You of course watched more than I did.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
There's a review as many.
spk_0
I did have to cut a couple just because of timing issues, but no worries.
spk_0
But you did get to the new return of Daniel DeLewis movie, Anemone, which is written and
spk_0
directed by him and his son.
spk_0
Is that right?
spk_0
I think that's right.
spk_0
It's co-written by the two of them and then directed by the son.
spk_0
Got it.
spk_0
Nobody has made this movie sound any good.
spk_0
So I didn't rush out to Manhattan to, you know, make it, get it done in time for this
spk_0
podcast.
spk_0
I will see it.
spk_0
Hopefully when it makes its way to my neighborhood, if it doesn't, I will probably see it next
spk_0
time I go to the city.
spk_0
It does come out wider.
spk_0
Sorry, it does come out into wider next week.
spk_0
So.
spk_0
Okay, perfect.
spk_0
So I don't excuse the fidget of that.
spk_0
Yeah, I'll probably catch it before then.
spk_0
What else is going on?
spk_0
I don't think anything.
spk_0
I think we can get right into it.
spk_0
Let's do it.
spk_0
You want me to do it?
spk_0
I can do it first up.
spk_0
First up.
spk_0
I usually defer to you just because you have.
spk_0
I don't remember how I literally in the moment was like, when Mark intros, does he do
spk_0
this or am I supposed to take it out?
spk_0
No, I can't.
spk_0
Here we go.
spk_0
So we'll get right to it.
spk_0
First up is the smashing machine from writer director Benny Safdie starring Duane Johnson
spk_0
and Emily Blunt.
spk_0
As the, Dronson as the aforementioned Mark Kerr ultimate fighter.
spk_0
Well, no, not all of my fighter MMA fighter.
spk_0
Here we go.
spk_0
He was also a UFC guy, I think.
spk_0
He was.
spk_0
Yeah, you know, it's not this movie isn't really about the UFC.
spk_0
It is.
spk_0
It's not about a lot of stuff about this guy.
spk_0
Yeah, we'll introduce.
spk_0
Hopefully we're talking about the.
spk_0
Here's the chance of stuff.
spk_0
Here's the trailer for a 24's the smashing machine.
spk_0
I love acting like a 24's the director because I feel like a lot of people do that.
spk_0
I'm just teasing though.
spk_0
Here's the trailer for the smashing machine.
spk_0
Benny Safdie, Duane the rock Johnson and Emily Blunt.
spk_0
Probably looking at my eyes.
spk_0
How did that happen?
spk_0
Well, have you ever heard of the ultimate fighting championship the UFC?
spk_0
That's the bloody thing they're trying to ban.
spk_0
This guy is the best he has ever seen.
spk_0
Do you hate each other when you fight?
spk_0
Absolutely not.
spk_0
How do you know Mark Kerr?
spk_0
I'm listening.
spk_0
We go way back.
spk_0
What is it buddy?
spk_0
Mine.
spk_0
Come on, baby.
spk_0
Too much.
spk_0
Never.
spk_0
Too much.
spk_0
No.
spk_0
Please welcome and it's up to God.
spk_0
Did you?
spk_0
Mark Kerr.
spk_0
The smashing machine, Duane the rock Johnson.
spk_0
I feel like you have to I always say I hate talking about Oscar stuff when we talk about
spk_0
movies, especially this far out.
spk_0
But I feel like you have to talk about the Oscars when you talk about this movie because
spk_0
what is this movie mark?
spk_0
If not just an Oscar vehicle, just a vehicle in which they're trying to get Duane the rock
spk_0
Johnson and Oscar.
spk_0
I don't know if it's going to happen.
spk_0
I feel like the nomination is definitely possible.
spk_0
That stuff doesn't matter.
spk_0
But all I, my point is this movie never really makes a case for itself other than as this
spk_0
showcase for Duane the rock Johnson to like put in a, you know, put in work and do like
spk_0
a physical transformation and do a performance that's like not something we've seen from
spk_0
him before.
spk_0
And he is great in this movie.
spk_0
It's probably one of his best performances, if not the best.
spk_0
But I found the movie around that performance pretty underwhelming and it just doesn't pass
spk_0
the is it better than the documentary based on the same subject test.
spk_0
There's a documentary called the smashing machine.
spk_0
They told like the smashing machine, the life's in times of Mark Kerr or something.
spk_0
And this movie like replicates scenes from it like directly to the point where when,
spk_0
if you have seen it, it's like distracting like when you're watching something be dramatized.
spk_0
Anyway, I just feel like I, having seen that maybe was the reason why I was so underwhelmed.
spk_0
But I feel like most 90% of people haven't.
spk_0
So is that a fair place to come from?
spk_0
I don't know.
spk_0
Mark.
spk_0
I think it is a fair place to come from.
spk_0
I just happened not to watch it because I had kind of a sense that when I read up about
spk_0
the documentary, which is on HBO back in, I think it was like 2002 or something.
spk_0
It's old.
spk_0
I didn't watch it just because I had a sense that this movie might just kind of copy what
spk_0
the documentary was doing.
spk_0
And it just felt like why give myself that extra burden?
spk_0
And so I didn't watch it.
spk_0
And I'm kind of glad I didn't, especially if you say it's replicates scenes directly
spk_0
for the documentary.
spk_0
I would have found that entirely frustrating.
spk_0
I find the movie frustrating enough because it leaves out so much.
spk_0
It'll emit so much.
spk_0
I think I think I think the most representative part of the movie is there's.
spk_0
So the whole thing is about him mostly in Japan in this fighting tournament, trying to win
spk_0
a prize eventually once every once they go through all the round robin stuff.
spk_0
However, it's set up.
spk_0
It covers like three years.
spk_0
They don't really give a specific.
spk_0
They tell you when things are happening, but it doesn't feel as if anything flows for
spk_0
one thing to another.
spk_0
Anyway, Mark Kerr is also dealing with an addiction to an opioid pain killer.
spk_0
And so there's a scene where he walks into a rehab facility.
spk_0
They cut to his friend in Japan talking about him and how they're going to miss him there.
spk_0
And the next shot is him walking out of the rehab facility.
spk_0
And I think that that entire sequence is so representative of this movie, which is just
spk_0
here's something that happened.
spk_0
We're not going to really dive into it at all.
spk_0
We're not going to explore it on some level.
spk_0
We just want to know that this happened to him.
spk_0
This thing happened to him.
spk_0
We don't it's not it's not interesting.
spk_0
What that meant to him as a person, while that affected him.
spk_0
It's just this stuff happened.
spk_0
And I find that so bland, especially when it's just about it's it's a routine
spk_0
sports movie, ultimately.
spk_0
It seems to think there's like,
spk_0
like there's like a dichotomy of interest between the idea that he's like a fighter in the ring
spk_0
and like a kind guy outside of the ring.
spk_0
But that's never that's never like I'm just like, okay, that's probably most people who do this.
spk_0
Like I just I didn't find find that to be as compelling as an idea as this movie thinks it is.
spk_0
And also it doesn't help that like Emily Blunt is basically playing just an
spk_0
earnest version of the Heidi Gardner SNL character.
spk_0
Every boxers girlfriend from every movie about boxing ever with no element of self awareness.
spk_0
So I just feel like it is underwhelming for all the reasons you mentioned.
spk_0
And especially disappointing considering that like it is a really good lead performance.
spk_0
And it's it does have like, you know, the safty like there's like that
spk_0
craft to it. It looks nice.
spk_0
It was shot on like 16 millimeter or whatever.
spk_0
And it looks like, you know, when it's emulating certain things of the era,
spk_0
it looks like it's from that era.
spk_0
And like it has that tactile feel that those movies have,
spk_0
but it completely lacks the energy and the propulsion that like an uncut gems has.
spk_0
So that was surprising because you hear a safty is involved.
spk_0
And you hope it just has that, you know, that it isn't flat and lifeless and it has momentum.
spk_0
And this movie doesn't have momentum.
spk_0
It just is kind of fleetingly going from scene to scene.
spk_0
And especially if you've seen the documentary, it's kind of confounding.
spk_0
But yeah, I don't know.
spk_0
It really just it's hard for me to talk about it in any other context.
spk_0
Then it will likely succeed in getting Dwayne Johnson nominated for some stuff.
spk_0
And that's what it's here for.
spk_0
But like it is it doesn't dive deep into any of the many interesting facets of this guy.
spk_0
His substance abuse, his relationship with that with his wife,
spk_0
his girlfriend, whatever she is.
spk_0
It just feels like it's just showing you moments in service of what a character study
spk_0
that you don't really dive into the character very much.
spk_0
So I found it very frustrating and I find it to be a two star experience, I think.
spk_0
Yeah, I think I think a blunt character, especially is so underwritten.
spk_0
She's just there to nad and scold and be to seek attention at every turn.
spk_0
It's I don't even care if that's authentic to like real life.
spk_0
It's in terms of drama, it becomes repetitive.
spk_0
And you just keep I kept watching those scenes of them fighting over and over again,
spk_0
just thinking like, what does the movie want me to actually think about this relationship?
spk_0
And I didn't I did I still I think it's it feels like this one-sided thing.
spk_0
And it turns out I think it really is this one-sided thing.
spk_0
It's like, why would you even include that character if you're not going to really explore
spk_0
where she's coming from at any level?
spk_0
And it doesn't.
spk_0
Yeah, there's just it's so underwritten the entire movie is just missing.
spk_0
It feels as if entire things are just missing from this.
spk_0
So I'm also giving the special machine two stars, Brett.
spk_0
Yeah, it's a bummer.
spk_0
I definitely have enjoyed the work of the safeties together.
spk_0
And, you know, early safty stuff, but this one just maybe the first that hasn't really worked for me.
spk_0
But next up, we'll talk about VHS Halloween, which is on shutter, I believe now.
spk_0
And as we mentioned earlier, it's becoming an annual thing at shutter for the past, I don't know,
spk_0
few years, three, maybe something like that.
spk_0
But before that, it was, you know, it's a horror anthology series.
spk_0
I feel like to me, there, the thing about them is that there's always like one or two that are really good.
spk_0
And then a few segments of it are like really bad.
spk_0
So it's always hard to recommend on the whole.
spk_0
But this one is a completely different experience for me.
spk_0
Here's the trailer for the for VHS Halloween.
spk_0
This Halloween shutter invites you to experience the six spookiest,
spk_0
ookiest stories that will make you laugh until you scream.
spk_0
It's a spooktacular anthology.
spk_0
The whole family can enjoy.
spk_0
I hope you don't.
spk_0
Mark, it only took him eight tries, but they finally completely nailed from top to bottom.
spk_0
The VHS anthology horror movie.
spk_0
I feel like they've been struggling the past few years with the shutter ones just to like differentiate themselves from each other.
spk_0
I think they're what was it like VHS 94, VHS 99, VHS 85, I think was one.
spk_0
They just like arbitrarily put years in there to kind of help justify the VHS aesthetic or whatever.
spk_0
And now with VHS Halloween, I feel like they've finally like locked on to what they should follow going forward,
spk_0
which is like the you know, these are all just Halloween themed instead of like arbitrarily tied to some year.
spk_0
The wrap around story is kind of one note, but also I thought kind of funny, which most of the wraparounds are pretty useless in these movies.
spk_0
And then the that's that counts as its own segment.
spk_0
So there's six segments.
spk_0
If you count the wrap around and then the other five, I thought they just kept getting better and I don't know if that's true.
spk_0
I feel like I love the first one so much that maybe they didn't get better and better.
spk_0
But each one was great.
spk_0
I didn't expect that to be true, but I genuinely really, really liked all five of them.
spk_0
And I thought the wrap around was good too.
spk_0
I think the first one's great.
spk_0
I think the one that Casper Kelly did, the fun size one is really great.
spk_0
And they're very similar.
spk_0
And that's like these movies are always like very similar to each other.
spk_0
That was another thing I always criticized like the last one like two or three of them.
spk_0
It's usually just like, you know, some sort of found footage thing where a creature shows up.
spk_0
And this one, they are similar.
spk_0
Like there's a couple like haunted house looking things, but they are so different than it didn't bother me.
spk_0
And it made me just go, okay, this is like proof of concept.
spk_0
They can do VHS Halloween too.
spk_0
They can do VHS Christmas, which I expect I'd imagine the next one will be VHS Christmas.
spk_0
I had an absolute blast with this.
spk_0
I was I was genuinely scared in the first one.
spk_0
I thought it was really creepy.
spk_0
And then like it has the humor you expect from the stuff where it's like over the top
spk_0
core and stuff like that.
spk_0
But they're genuinely creepy and scary and funny.
spk_0
Like I was kind of blown away by how well these worked.
spk_0
And then the Alex Ross Perry one is just like unsettling.
spk_0
I thought this was really cool.
spk_0
I'm like very excited about it.
spk_0
I I enjoyed it too.
spk_0
And I don't I think it might be the best of the whole franchise.
spk_0
I'm trying to think of that's the problem with a lot of these is that even back when they were
spk_0
in theaters.
spk_0
Yes, it was all you were right.
spk_0
It's all about like which segments do you remember?
spk_0
Yeah, like the one from the second movie, everyone remembers like there's
spk_0
Gareth Evans or Garrett Edwards.
spk_0
One of the garrots did a really good one.
spk_0
Like that's what people talk about.
spk_0
It's always like those standouts.
spk_0
It's not.
spk_0
Yeah, yeah.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
It's and watching them all like, you know, what I what I caught up with this watching
spk_0
them all in one go basically over a couple of days.
spk_0
It really did feel that way too.
spk_0
It's just like, oh, it's just a bunch of segments.
spk_0
Which ones were good?
spk_0
This one and there's because of this unwatchable VHS viral is very bad.
spk_0
That's terrible.
spk_0
Yeah, that one's terrible.
spk_0
This one having a consistent theme like a genuine theme you can point to like,
spk_0
this is the Halloween one, specifically the Halloween one.
spk_0
And then having all of them, you're right.
spk_0
Revolve around mostly ideas that you could recognize like the haunted house experience,
spk_0
whether it's a literal haunted house like in the last one with the guy in the neighborhood
spk_0
who sets up the haunted maze every year.
spk_0
And he's trying to impress his teenage son finally and he ends up a.
spk_0
It's very funny.
spk_0
It's good.
spk_0
It's good.
spk_0
And that one is so bloody and it's a good thing.
spk_0
The Alex Ross Perry comes one comes right before it with a serious approach to a series
spk_0
of child murders because that last one features so many kids dying in horrible.
spk_0
The number overall.
spk_0
It's smart.
spk_0
The number of kids who died in this movie is stunning.
spk_0
It is stunning.
spk_0
If that bothers you, stay away because what I'm saying is it's actually smartly constructed
spk_0
to because it takes it that takes that first one seriously to say this is, you know,
spk_0
we're going to we're going to play this one first so that maybe later on you can laugh at
spk_0
the over the top, which is carrying kids that are death sort of thing.
spk_0
I think that that's a smart move on their part.
spk_0
We didn't even I think my favorite one, my favorite one and I seem to be in the minority
spk_0
on this.
spk_0
My favorite one is the one with the phone in the room.
spk_0
I found that one genuinely creepy just because of the back and forth.
spk_0
It's it's so part of it is a Halloween party.
spk_0
And part of it is the aftermath of it with the cops trying to investigate what happened
spk_0
at the Halloween party that resulted in a like I think like a thousand people or so
spk_0
a bunch of people a murder.
spk_0
I thought that one was really cool.
spk_0
I also has a who did a wreck movies if you're into those Spanish language movies that
spk_0
were actually remade in America as quarantine.
spk_0
Yes.
spk_0
That's right.
spk_0
To be a horror historian.
spk_0
I like them all.
spk_0
I like them all the one degree or another and I was and I think that's enough for
spk_0
this.
spk_0
And yeah, having a having a very specific theme and ordering them in a way that
spk_0
makes sense in some fashion as I think is really good to like to have three
spk_0
ones that feel like you're going through a haunted house and then to space them out
spk_0
in that way so that you don't feel like, oh, this is repetitive.
spk_0
There's there's a nice little slow to that.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
They're very much their own thing that you you will you will notice that they're similar
spk_0
but you won't care because it's like, okay, they did their own thing.
spk_0
They do their own thing.
spk_0
They're very distinct.
spk_0
The one is not, you know, it's just a creepy house that they're going through.
spk_0
The other one is it feels like a haunted house, but it's just because it's a twisted
spk_0
candy factory where you realize what's going on.
spk_0
That one is so fucking funny and the reveal is incredible.
spk_0
And it's also like it's as funny as it is fucked up, right?
spk_0
Like it is twisted.
spk_0
What's going on?
spk_0
Oh, man, I had a I can't I just I think it was the nature just the fact that it
spk_0
was so competent.
spk_0
I just don't know why I'm so blown away by it.
spk_0
I think it's because I've been so underwhelmed by the other ones that watching one
spk_0
that as you said, like builds on itself and like knows what it's doing versus just
spk_0
like kind of having haphazard random movies together, it just feels like a
spk_0
cohesive product for the first time, I feel like in this eight movie franchise.
spk_0
And I'm going to go out on a limb and just give it how I feel about it.
spk_0
I'm going to give it four out of four stars.
spk_0
I had a it's like a perfect.
spk_0
It's one of those things where it's like, am I rating it on the scale of did it
spk_0
achieve what it set out to do?
spk_0
Like fuck yeah, it did.
spk_0
It is genuinely creepy and scary.
spk_0
Laugh out loud, funny.
spk_0
It is everything you'd want out of a horror anthology.
spk_0
And then laughs are like in service of the horror.
spk_0
It's not like horror comedy.
spk_0
It is horror that is funny because of how depraved it is.
spk_0
I absolute blast.
spk_0
I mean, what can I say?
spk_0
I gave the H.S. movie four stars.
spk_0
I feel crazy, but I also feel justified and I can't wait to watch it again.
spk_0
I just think it's like perfect.
spk_0
This will become a perennial Halloween movie, I think.
spk_0
It's really fun.
spk_0
I enjoyed it to you.
spk_0
I'm going to be less, I'm going to be less less enthusiastic about it.
spk_0
And a very solid three stars for me for VHS Halloween.
spk_0
I think it is, I think it might be the best of the franchise.
spk_0
I genuinely cannot recall one that is easily.
spk_0
I'm going to say it.
spk_0
It's easily the best in the franchise.
spk_0
Just because of that consistency that isn't there in any other one.
spk_0
Like every single one here is worth worth worth watching.
spk_0
And that's fantastic.
spk_0
I'm so delighted that I get to recommend this movie.
spk_0
All right, next up, boy did this movie let me down.
spk_0
Play dirty.
spk_0
The new film from Shane Black kind of returning to is what he came up on, right?
spk_0
Like buddy comedy, action stuff, action comedy.
spk_0
It's based on the Parker novels, which have been made into movies a bunch of times, right?
spk_0
Since the 60s through the Jason Statham one in 2013.
spk_0
Here's the trailer.
spk_0
Some girl,
spk_0
yeah, for her.
spk_0
You had a bit of a problem.
spk_0
I'm looking for a girl.
spk_0
Was this an amorous inquiry?
spk_0
She killed everyone on my last job.
spk_0
I just need to talk to her.
spk_0
You mean actually talk?
spk_0
Because sometimes when you talk, people end up at room temperature.
spk_0
I'll be gentle.
spk_0
You were kinder to this, but you still ultimately didn't wind up recommending it, I think.
spk_0
But do you understand why I found this so upsetting and disappointing?
spk_0
Or were you, when did you, when did you get with it?
spk_0
I feel like I was pretty instantly like this is like a streaming mock buster version
spk_0
of a Shane Black thing.
spk_0
And it felt, it felt that way the whole time for me.
spk_0
Clicked for me when Walberg's character has that monologue about when he was a kid.
spk_0
And what he did, he had a, he was going to like a basketball camp for the summer.
spk_0
And then he had a bully who kept them from going everywhere to from going every day.
spk_0
And then eventually he realized how he could manipulate the bully,
spk_0
not to bully him anymore.
spk_0
And it involved a little girl's bike being destroyed and the bully's
spk_0
abusive father beating him.
spk_0
And I thought, oh, this kind of clicks now.
spk_0
I understand both the character and what the movie is going for.
spk_0
And it's just that this guy is essentially a sociopath.
spk_0
I mean, he does it.
spk_0
He only cares about what he wants and he doesn't care who he's going to hurt in order to get what he wants.
spk_0
And I found that carefully miscast.
spk_0
Mark Walberg.
spk_0
I think, yeah, I think Walberg is, he, I found the performance.
spk_0
I, yeah, I found the performance kind of interesting because when that was part of the thing was keeping me from it was that I said,
spk_0
he's more like a sociopath, the character.
spk_0
And so I was like, where's any kind of charm for this guy throughout the entire build up?
spk_0
And then as soon as that monologue hit, I'm like, oh, no, he's not supposed to be really charming.
spk_0
He is kind of bored by all of this stuff.
spk_0
And so I thought, I thought that Walberg's performance kind of got it something about this guy.
spk_0
I don't certainly certainly looked bored.
spk_0
Yeah, he did.
spk_0
Yes.
spk_0
But I think the movie doesn't.
spk_0
I think the movie does a character to service.
spk_0
And that might be why they've made this is the seventh movie featuring Parker.
spk_0
This character's been played by Lee Marvin, Robert DeVal, Mel Gibson and Jason Statham.
spk_0
I can't remember the, you know, the other one was were.
spk_0
But that's the likes of actors who have played this guy.
spk_0
And I didn't know that this was like an outgoing thing because they, you're right.
spk_0
They started in the 60s.
spk_0
And now this is the seventh one with the character.
spk_0
And it might just be because I don't understand this guy.
spk_0
And in this movie, especially, it turns into the whole over the top heist thing.
spk_0
And you called it the streaming mockbuster.
spk_0
And it is trying to do those big action sequences.
spk_0
And the big, we're going to rob the robbers.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
If that's an exciting new idea, yeah, it's not.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
It's, it just doesn't have like the verb that a chain black script usually has.
spk_0
Like the, um, the dialogue that makes you laugh and like just like full of jokes,
spk_0
like they're kind of rat attack, quickness of the jokes.
spk_0
Like if you like this eventually kind of settles into trying to do that,
spk_0
but it's not, it just never really works.
spk_0
And it just never, it never grabbed me and it just made me go, God, what would it take
spk_0
to get the, the nice guys sequel to be made?
spk_0
Like what would it take?
spk_0
I feel like that movie has become so beloved in its sense at bomb at the box office or whatever.
spk_0
And everyone involved would love to do it.
spk_0
Let's just get that going.
spk_0
This movie made me depressed.
spk_0
You might have to wait like another 10 years for the, you know, everyone to realize,
spk_0
oh, this is like a cult movie because that seems to be the, that seems to be the turn now.
spk_0
It's like you have to wait even years.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
I feel like I was even cool on the nice guys the first time I thought it was okay.
spk_0
And it has since grown to be like a movie I watched twice a year.
spk_0
And it makes me laugh throughout the whole time.
spk_0
It's delightful.
spk_0
Um, and of course I'm a fan of earlier shame black too.
spk_0
Um, but that movie is like the peak for me of like what shame blacks powers are.
spk_0
And all of this stuff coming together, kiss to spank bang was also my favorite movie from 2005 to 2010.
spk_0
Probably.
spk_0
Um, so I'm a big fan and I just found this disappointing because it feels like it's very much trying to do what shame black does.
spk_0
But every bit of it feels a little off and I was like, is it the adaptation part of it?
spk_0
Or is it the streaming era part of it?
spk_0
I don't really know what went wrong, but does it didn't work for me?
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
So that goes off here.
spk_0
And I think I really think it's just the plotting overwhelms every single character here.
spk_0
It's so plot heavy.
spk_0
It is so plot heavy just back and forth between how are we going to do this?
spk_0
This is how we're going to do it.
spk_0
Uh oh, so they went wrong.
spk_0
We have to figure out how to do it.
spk_0
I did, I did enjoy that when they have to improvise and rush that job while all while the entire team is hung over are still drunk from partying to get ready for it the next day.
spk_0
I thought that was kind of funny, but it, but that even even that ends up over the top where it ends with a whole destructive sequence where you have to,
spk_0
you have to figure like at least at least 20 people are probably killed in that entire thing.
spk_0
Nobody cares.
spk_0
But again, the characters, the sociopath, he probably doesn't care.
spk_0
So whatever.
spk_0
I did enjoy it probably a little bit more than you did, but I still am not going to fully recommend it.
spk_0
I'm going to give a play dirty two and a half stars.
spk_0
I'm going to drop the one and a half stars on it.
spk_0
I really was so disappointed.
spk_0
And it was just like, I was like bored watching Walberg doing this.
spk_0
Did you know that it was supposed to be RDJ?
spk_0
It was supposed to be Robert Dany Jr.
spk_0
And he dropped out and he remains a producer on it.
spk_0
But he was supposed to be in the lead.
spk_0
And you know, which would have been,
spk_0
which is different.
spk_0
I mean, reunion would have been a very different experience.
spk_0
Would I have liked that version?
spk_0
Maybe, but I mean, I feel like they still would have had to change a lot of the script for me to like it,
spk_0
even if RDJ was in this because RDJ is great, but there's been plenty of movies that he's in that I don't like.
spk_0
So yeah, sorry to this one.
spk_0
I hope Shane Black bounces back with a movie like this.
spk_0
That's better because I like the formula, but this one didn't didn't work for me.
spk_0
What we got to mention is that a Christmas time too because of course it is.
spk_0
I feel like it goes.
spk_0
I think you do have to mention it just so everybody knows like, oh, yeah.
spk_0
Yeah, it's really following that.
spk_0
It's part of the Shane Black of us in that sense.
spk_0
It is at Christmas.
spk_0
It's always Christmas.
spk_0
It's always Christmas in the Shane Black world.
spk_0
All right.
spk_0
Next up, good boy, a movie that was set for a limited release.
spk_0
And then the trailer went viral.
spk_0
So they put it out wider.
spk_0
It's a movie that stars a dog and he is a good boy.
spk_0
Here's a trailer.
spk_0
Hard to get much from that trailer.
spk_0
If you especially if you're just listening, it was a dog wandering around a house.
spk_0
And the experience of this movie is basically the premise is essentially what if a dog was loose in the skin of a ring house.
spk_0
It's kind of the vibe that I got from it.
spk_0
It's it's kind of the premise is great.
spk_0
It's like a clever subversion of a horror trope, right?
spk_0
Where like the animals in the horror movie usually seem to know something's going on before the people do.
spk_0
So this movie is kind of tapping into that.
spk_0
And it's like a dog notices his owner is like, you know, going through something supernatural.
spk_0
And the movie just kind of takes you through that experience with a dog in the lead role.
spk_0
And the dog somehow turns in a great performance in the lead role.
spk_0
This dog is genuinely, you feel like the dog is performing and doing what it needs to be doing at every moment.
spk_0
It's very impressive in that sense.
spk_0
But by the time the movie's over, you're just like,
spk_0
well, that would have been a neat short.
spk_0
But as a feature, I don't know if there's enough meat on the bone pun intended.
spk_0
What did you think of it?
spk_0
I think once I realized what the movie was doing, which was not, it's not technically it is from the dog's perspective, a haunted house movie.
spk_0
But what's it kind of clicks in your head?
spk_0
It is what is it?
spk_0
It's essentially the metaphor horror that we always talk about.
spk_0
That's what it's doing ultimately.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
And so I found that it's like even when you come up with a clever gimmick, you still can't just do straight up.
spk_0
You have to make it about something bigger and more important.
spk_0
And I just found that frustrating because it is a very human story.
spk_0
But we're not seeing it from a human's point of view.
spk_0
And that kind of ruins that effect, I think.
spk_0
And then what is it?
spk_0
It's also just a horror movie that happens to have a dog.
spk_0
It's doing all the usual stuff wandering around the house when you hear a noise,
spk_0
something reaching out from the camera.
spk_0
The dog even dreams.
spk_0
There has no way it was just a dream fake out scare dog.
spk_0
As a part of sequence.
spk_0
Yes.
spk_0
It's one of those things and I know dogs dream.
spk_0
I'm just saying it's, oh, my dog, it's hilarious when my dreams come.
spk_0
Because it's like, you know, fake running or painting or whatever.
spk_0
It's very cute and sad.
spk_0
I'm not complaining.
spk_0
I'm not complaining about the dog dreaming.
spk_0
I complain about the fact that the dog dreams in a cliched way in a horror horror.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Just so that the entire movie is that.
spk_0
Like if you could, if you're, if you're going to do that in a movie that's like subverting a trope,
spk_0
like there's a way to do it.
spk_0
That's interesting.
spk_0
And they didn't, they didn't do it.
spk_0
It's just version is not.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
It's not that.
spk_0
But you are right.
spk_0
Very good boy.
spk_0
A dog in the very good, very good as a dog and real life being able to do all this stuff for the movie.
spk_0
And also as a character, very, I think it was shot over like several, several years.
spk_0
Because it's sick of owner shooting with his dog and yeah, that's cool.
spk_0
But also don't forget there's that whole whole whole movie footage thing of the dog growing up too.
spk_0
And so maybe that counts.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Does that count?
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
I saw that a little bit of footage.
spk_0
These fucking the numbers.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
It's like, okay.
spk_0
But yeah, how many dog years did it take?
spk_0
That's the question.
spk_0
This is a big question.
spk_0
I just think we're both kind of underwhelmed by it.
spk_0
Despite like I was on board at first for sure.
spk_0
I feel like I was with it.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
I was with it until it becomes clear that there's just not enough for a movie.
spk_0
And I wish we would have figured that out.
spk_0
Did we mention it runs probably under an hour and 10 minutes without if you take out the credits.
spk_0
Yeah, that's very, very short.
spk_0
That's part of the problem too, I guess, is that we're saying all this and the movie's barely an hour over an hour.
spk_0
So it really stretches itself pretty thin.
spk_0
But I'm giving it two and a half for the ambition of it all and the dog performance and the fact that it was trying to do something different.
spk_0
And then it ultimately ended up doing something pretty similar to things we are familiar with.
spk_0
But I'll give it the two and a half.
spk_0
Yeah, I will unfortunately bred be a little less generous than give it two stars.
spk_0
That's fair.
spk_0
It's fair, but he's a good boy.
spk_0
All right.
spk_0
Next up, Bone Lake.
spk_0
Now this movie has the lofty, at least for me, the leading up to it, all I could think was,
spk_0
could this possibly live up to the awesome teaser poster that they put out for this movie?
spk_0
I don't know if anyone saw it.
spk_0
I'll send it to Mark so he sees it.
spk_0
And you could look it up.
spk_0
It's just like a kind of profane, funny poster that I don't pick the movie actually looks up to.
spk_0
Here's the trailer for Bone Lake.
spk_0
When Will saw this house on the upkeep that bone Lake was a euphemism.
spk_0
Yeah, I thought it was Bone Lake, because it's a secluded place where people call it.
spk_0
Yeah, I thought that.
spk_0
Right, mine.
spk_0
Mail mines.
spk_0
Do you guys like to play games?
spk_0
Everywhere you go and everyone you meet is playing together.
spk_0
We have this house for the weekend.
spk_0
Seems like we also booked this house.
spk_0
It was supposed to be just us and now we're with strangers.
spk_0
She's pretty.
spk_0
So he's here.
spk_0
So are you.
spk_0
I think this is an opportunity to prove your love for the weekend.
spk_0
All right, Bone Lake, the premise clearly, we've seen this premise.
spk_0
We've seen the double booked Airbnb horror premise.
spk_0
Barbarian did it.
spk_0
There's also another movie.
spk_0
I'm pretty sure that did it.
spk_0
I don't remember what that one was.
spk_0
But it's like a kind of a new.
spk_0
I don't know if it's we call it a trope or a sputting subgenre on my store,
spk_0
which one it is at this point.
spk_0
But Bone Lake, I feel like if I compared it to the other movies I want to compare it to,
spk_0
it would maybe give away too much.
spk_0
I feel like that trailer is also kind of giving away too much.
spk_0
I don't know.
spk_0
I'll throw it a mark because I don't know what to say about it.
spk_0
I would say to be fair, the movie I think gives away way too much right at the top.
spk_0
And that's kind of my problem with it is it has the generic, oh, it's a horror movie.
spk_0
So it better open with a bunch of people getting hunted or killed or whatever.
spk_0
Stought, however you want to do it.
spk_0
It's got to open with the requisite horror sequence.
spk_0
So everybody in the media res.
spk_0
Yeah, everybody in the audience has to know it's a horror movie right from the beginning.
spk_0
And I think that that's a big the service to this material, which ultimately is
spk_0
for most of it, a relationship drama about these two characters who show up at an Airbnb.
spk_0
They have this whole thing where he's an aspiring writer and he just quit his job
spk_0
so he could focus on his novel and she has to take up a new job because she's going to be the only source of income for the house.
spk_0
And that's that's an interesting idea for attention and conflict between this couple.
spk_0
And then you throw in another couple who is, you know, happier and more free spirited.
spk_0
And the two of them in this awkward situation and how they talk to each other and talk and figure out things that are going on within the relationship and hinting all that.
spk_0
It's really interesting.
spk_0
But again, the movie has told us right at the start get ready because something's going to drop and yeah, you know, there's only a certain way.
spk_0
There's only a certain way this is going to turn out.
spk_0
There's only a one way that this movie can turn out once you get to a certain point in it because of the way it's set up.
spk_0
And so you're, we are ahead of the characters the entire time.
spk_0
And it's very annoying to try to get involved in this relationship drama while you're realizing it doesn't matter because eventually everything's going to hit the fan.
spk_0
And we're going to have to be running through the woods or somewhere just like that first couple in the opening scene.
spk_0
So what does any of this really matter?
spk_0
Yeah, you're right.
spk_0
I hate when movies do that.
spk_0
It's like I would all almost nine, like nine times out of 10, I think you can just cut that and not do that in your movie.
spk_0
Like do the in media.
spk_0
That's the thing.
spk_0
But there's also did you find that the lead antagonist performance was pretty bad in this movie that also was kind of a problem.
spk_0
Oh, yeah, I mean,
spk_0
they're not.
spk_0
She's not great.
spk_0
It's oh, okay.
spk_0
Sorry.
spk_0
Yeah, okay.
spk_0
I wasn't sure because either of them are great, but she particularly has just like, I don't know.
spk_0
What's the thing?
spk_0
It's like it's the easiest way to say it is I'm quite aware I'm watching someone reading lines and doing a performance versus like believing this is a person doing the actions.
spk_0
I guess you'd be fair without giving away too much to be fair.
spk_0
That one part of the whole thing.
spk_0
That one situation in particular is so so contrived that you know with the glasses.
spk_0
I think that one.
spk_0
And that one is so contrived and so blatantly.
spk_0
A ruse and all that stuff that they're going for.
spk_0
Like it's just weird.
spk_0
How do you how do you play that?
spk_0
I don't think I think it's I think a lot of it is a screenplay.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Well, I kind of want to just say all the movies.
spk_0
I think it's trying to do in a spoiler section.
spk_0
Yeah, spoiler here.
spk_0
I think this movie is doing funny games.
spk_0
But like by way of speaking to evil kind of like a little comedy of manners, but in a more pointed way.
spk_0
It's kind of like the strangers, but if they were horny.
spk_0
It's just a movie about like I love the idea of like trying to like test someone's relationship and fuck with them and prove that they don't care about their partner.
spk_0
But again, it's just like.
spk_0
I'm sorry.
spk_0
I already owe thank God I already said it was spoiler zone.
spk_0
Because I just gave it all.
spk_0
Whoops.
spk_0
You know, the idea here, I would be very very talk about spoilers.
spk_0
I don't know what else to say.
spk_0
So I'm just going to keep going with my spoilers.
spk_0
I guess I'll very clearly market.
spk_0
You know, the idea if we can destroy in a weekend what it takes you years to build.
spk_0
Like it's just like them.
spk_0
It's just them fucking with people, which there's like a there's an interest.
spk_0
There's interest.
spk_0
There's like a nihilistic interest in that to me.
spk_0
But like funny games at least had the like.
spk_0
You know, we're inditing you the audience for watching this.
spk_0
Like it had like a take on the material where this doesn't have anything to say about any of this, right?
spk_0
It's just like a silly movie that is people fucking with each other.
spk_0
It was enjoyable enough in that.
spk_0
I don't know.
spk_0
You're right.
spk_0
It's not very good.
spk_0
I'm just deciding between two and two and a half.
spk_0
I think I'm two and a half on bone like.
spk_0
I'm at two stars on bone like I.
spk_0
I yeah, I think I think that entire opening ruins it and sets us up to be.
spk_0
Be ready for what the movie you know, we did you know, you did the spoiler section.
spk_0
I really think the movie throws it in your face that like what's going on to it does even before even without that opening.
spk_0
It's kind of you know, you can make the connection like when a character says something.
spk_0
How did that character know that this has not come up in conversation.
spk_0
There's only one way the character could know that information.
spk_0
And so it's it doesn't self no favors in any way.
spk_0
Yeah, that's totally true.
spk_0
All right, next up another one.
spk_0
I feel I feel like way stronger than you about this one somehow.
spk_0
Coyotes with Justin Long and K.
spk_0
Pazworth.
spk_0
It's just a horror creature feature, but there's some limitations to this film.
spk_0
Here are the here's the trailer.
spk_0
Gigi walk.
spk_0
I made him sit down with this dog.
spk_0
I got I love your dog.
spk_0
Gigi, go party now.
spk_0
It's exhausting being this hot.
spk_0
Are you all worried about the tree out front?
spk_0
I'm not worried.
spk_0
You did say that you were going to trim it last year.
spk_0
You can wait.
spk_0
Guys, guys, guys, oh, there's something outside.
spk_0
Okay, give me give me.
spk_0
No right now right now.
spk_0
Wow.
spk_0
I sure it's okay.
spk_0
So just.
spk_0
I was trying to get a glimpse of those AI generated coyotes that I'm 90% sure are
spk_0
AI generated because they look like their generative AI creatures.
spk_0
I thought this movie it's definitely trying to be funny.
spk_0
It is a horror comedy more so than a horror movie, but it's just a coyote creature
spk_0
feature.
spk_0
And I think it being so cheap and having generative AI coyotes that I hate looking
spk_0
at just made it made me go, I just don't care about this in any way.
spk_0
And I really like just in long and I think he's having fun here and is good.
spk_0
But it wasn't enough to get me through this movie that is quite shitty.
spk_0
I thought.
spk_0
I.
spk_0
Yeah, I think it's a decent premise, but even then it is just creature feature.
spk_0
It's just I go back to like grizzly or any other you know,
spk_0
jaws rip off that's trying not to do the shark.
spk_0
That's essentially what it's doing.
spk_0
It's just coyotes who are.
spk_0
I love the fact that it sets up global warming climate change as the reason
spk_0
why this would could potentially probably will happen in real life.
spk_0
And then it's just oh no, they're actually here because of a storm and
spk_0
something else that's going on.
spk_0
It's so weird that it's trying to just like hint at the idea that you know
spk_0
it has something to say and then it just kind of undercuts that too.
spk_0
I think what maybe it kind of gets a cross gets away with a little bit more
spk_0
because it does have somewhat of a sense of humor about itself.
spk_0
Not enough to make it distinct in any way though.
spk_0
And you're right.
spk_0
I those coyotes if they're not AI, they have been intentionally made to look
spk_0
as if they could be AI, which is a strange choice to make.
spk_0
So yeah, they're AI.
spk_0
I mean, they just know it's cheap.
spk_0
Yeah, so like they probably just threw in.
spk_0
I don't know how you throw an AI.
spk_0
I mean, you pretty easy, pretty easy to probably throw.
spk_0
It's all about, you know, all you've to do is sign into something.
spk_0
Yeah, exactly.
spk_0
Yeah, even if you use it to design the creature, it's going to, I think it's going to show up
spk_0
when you're when you render it into visual effects too because I mean, it's,
spk_0
it's it looks like that.
spk_0
It's like that famous Supreme Court ruling on pornography at this point.
spk_0
Like you know it when you see it.
spk_0
It's yeah, and it's hard to argue.
spk_0
It's just like it looks fuzzy.
spk_0
It has that kind of, you don't even know how to describe it.
spk_0
It's like kind of like
spk_0
constantly in motion, even when it's staying still.
spk_0
There's just something that feels off about it.
spk_0
You could see it.
spk_0
You could see.
spk_0
I mean, I feel like you probably, because you're, I think you're about as online as I am,
spk_0
unfortunately for both of us.
spk_0
Yeah, I know.
spk_0
But like there's such a distinct look of an AI image that like you can scroll through
spk_0
your timeline and just be like, okay, that's AI.
spk_0
That's AI at this point.
spk_0
And yeah, watching this movie, it definitely had that moment of like,
spk_0
oh, dammit.
spk_0
That sucks.
spk_0
Um, and then I was really glossy too.
spk_0
That's another big thing.
spk_0
I was like less invested from then on and then the rest of the movie.
spk_0
It's just not funny either.
spk_0
Like the opening scene is not funny.
spk_0
Uh girl in a dog and get to that.
spk_0
Nobody seen could have been.
spk_0
It's so funny.
spk_0
I went out of my way and my written review to avoid how that scene plays out just to
spk_0
suggest that like it tries to have it both ways of being.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
What you think it's going to be and also to subvert it in some way.
spk_0
And so it's funny when the trailer always just ruins what they end up with it.
spk_0
But I've been that opening scene is kind of conducive.
spk_0
It kind of shows what they're trying to do.
spk_0
It is they're trying to subvert this idea of a creature feature.
spk_0
But they also want to have fun with it with all the generic kills and bloody stuff.
spk_0
Yeah, it's very silly.
spk_0
It just doesn't work for me because of the cheapness and the AI.
spk_0
And it just it would have been bad without the AI.
spk_0
I think it might review wouldn't have been much different.
spk_0
But with the AI, it's a one-star movie for me.
spk_0
I didn't like it at all.
spk_0
I feel like you were a little kinder.
spk_0
Yeah, two stars for me for coyotes.
spk_0
I did laugh a bit.
spk_0
I like Justin Long's character.
spk_0
He has that scene where he's trying to build something to protect himself.
spk_0
And you know, he's not good at that stuff.
spk_0
I thought that was a funny bit.
spk_0
That could have played out a little bit more.
spk_0
Maybe these characters, any of these characters could have been more interesting,
spk_0
more eccentric and not just, you know,
spk_0
characters who are going to get killed off by coyotes at some point.
spk_0
Because you know, the family's going to be okay.
spk_0
So all these other side characters like they're, you know,
spk_0
what's going to happen to them?
spk_0
Have you ever seen Grave encounters that 2011 movie that this director made that like
spk_0
it's like a found for the tour movie?
spk_0
It's a found for the tour movie that like some horror fans like,
spk_0
but most people have probably said whatever about.
spk_0
Funnily enough, Justin Long and Kate Bosworth were just announced
spk_0
that they're remaking it with this guy again.
spk_0
Who made this movie in that movie?
spk_0
So I feel like it's just like much worse than this guy's other movies that I've seen.
spk_0
What keeps you alive from 2018 was kind of was okay.
spk_0
You like that. I know I see on letterbox that you like what keeps you alive.
spk_0
2018 movie that I'm sure from the title.
spk_0
It's really hard to remember.
spk_0
But yeah.
spk_0
spk_0
So this it was a big step down for this director for me.
spk_0
I just thought it was quite poor.
spk_0
So I'm one star on coyotes.
spk_0
I think I already said that.
spk_0
I think so.
spk_0
I'll say to get to stars for me.
spk_0
Just a great.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Perfect.
spk_0
Here for the tangents.
spk_0
Yes.
spk_0
Yes, we are.
spk_0
All right.
spk_0
Now here's the last one.
spk_0
Documentary Mark Marin.
spk_0
It's called Are We Good?
spk_0
Which you know, if you listen to the show, that means something to you.
spk_0
Great title.
spk_0
All right.
spk_0
Here's the trailer.
spk_0
Charlie.
spk_0
Charlie.
spk_0
Charlie.
spk_0
Charlie.
spk_0
spk_0
What are you doing?
spk_0
Do we have to plan the stairs?
spk_0
Hey.
spk_0
The whole place is dark.
spk_0
I always wanted to be a comic since I was a kid.
spk_0
For 15 years of my life, I used to smoke, I used to drink.
spk_0
I did drugs.
spk_0
You see, large right out of a can.
spk_0
I met Mark in the early 80s.
spk_0
I was one of a handful of people.
spk_0
There weren't many who could tolerate them.
spk_0
I couldn't draw no matter how many Conan's I did.
spk_0
And that was part of the beginning of the podcast.
spk_0
It's happening.
spk_0
I'm Mark Marin.
spk_0
This is my podcast.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
There's that Lou Reed line.
spk_0
I accept the newfound man.
spk_0
And that is what Mark became.
spk_0
You started this in your garage, right?
spk_0
Yes, sir.
spk_0
I'm a very short commute to work.
spk_0
You know, we've all been able to live our dreams.
spk_0
All right.
spk_0
Well, that trailer, you know, it shows that it's about him becoming
spk_0
the world's most famous podcaster probably in one of the earliest podcasters.
spk_0
Thank you, Mark, for paving the way for us in addition to Roger Ebert and Gene
spk_0
Siscoll, of course.
spk_0
But this movies, I would say my memory of it.
spk_0
I saw it at a festival like a year ago.
spk_0
My memory of it is that it's more of like a post Lin Sheldon's death thing.
spk_0
And like looking at his life and how his relationship with the filmmaker Lin Sheldon
spk_0
who tragically passed away, I forget what sort of, she had like a brain.
spk_0
Disorder some sort of sudden.
spk_0
So we're passing.
spk_0
Rare blood disease.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Very sudden shocking passing.
spk_0
If you're listening to the show contemporaneously at the time, you could hear Mark
spk_0
deal with it in real time.
spk_0
It was so tragic and heartbreaking.
spk_0
And this movie kind of dwells in that zone.
spk_0
And it is heartbreaking and sad.
spk_0
And it's, it's also like refreshing to see just like a unfiltered like this is what
spk_0
grief looks like kind of thing.
spk_0
I appreciated that.
spk_0
I really love Mark Marin as a comic.
spk_0
I think he's gotten better at comedy as like his most recent specials are like his
spk_0
best ever.
spk_0
I've listened to the show sporadically over the years.
spk_0
I think he's an interesting interview, a very interesting person.
spk_0
As a documentary about him and that moment in time about Lin, I think it was
spk_0
very moving and good.
spk_0
I liked it a lot.
spk_0
Am I right?
spk_0
That's what it's largely about.
spk_0
Yeah, it's mostly about that.
spk_0
It's mostly about him dealing, you know, confronting grief and trying to
spk_0
figure out how he can be funny again and how what kind of jokes he can make.
spk_0
Like what would be what would be appropriate, not just for an audience, but for
spk_0
him too.
spk_0
Just thinking about that special he made about it is now making me like want to
spk_0
cry.
spk_0
The bird.
spk_0
Is it?
spk_0
But there's enough footage of it in here.
spk_0
Like Mark, yeah, for my experience of Marin is that I got into him, especially
spk_0
when he had his TV show and I have seen I was watching that I like that too.
spk_0
I enjoyed that.
spk_0
It's Lin Shelton directed a couple episodes of it too.
spk_0
Yes.
spk_0
And so I really like his sense of humor.
spk_0
I think it's very funny.
spk_0
I need to get back into his stuff though apparently because I really also like
spk_0
this documentary because it's so honest, but I do know he is very forthright
spk_0
about his personal life and his issues and dealing with them.
spk_0
And so when he's sitting down and talking with a filmmaker behind the scenes,
spk_0
trying to talk about.
spk_0
Comedy and how you deal, how you do comedy in the face of feeling like you
spk_0
are going to break down and cry on stage.
spk_0
If you say the wrong thing or if you see something that reminds you of something,
spk_0
it's really, it's really insightful and it's really, you're right.
spk_0
It's very moving.
spk_0
But in that way that you know Marin is, Marin's Marin.
spk_0
And so he's not trying to draw, you know, he's not trying to do anything.
spk_0
He's just, he's just there and he's him.
spk_0
And so it's kind of hard to watch him do that at times because you're
spk_0
expecting a joke and sometimes there's not a joke because it's not funny.
spk_0
Yeah, I found it, I found it very affecting and I found it very insightful.
spk_0
Just just on that level because I think the filmmaker too, the filmmaker has
spk_0
worked a lot on comedians.
spk_0
Yeah, he's done a, he's smart.
spk_0
I know him from podcasts like he was on the Todd Glass show a ton and he's very funny.
spk_0
Yeah, he's very smart about talking to Marin as a comedian because he doesn't ask
spk_0
the stupid questions.
spk_0
He doesn't ask like, how do you make a joke about this?
spk_0
He just lets Marin talk about it on that level.
spk_0
And so he gets, he gets the answer.
spk_0
Everybody wants to know, but he doesn't ask in a direct way.
spk_0
It's, yeah, it's very well.
spk_0
The aspect of Marin that I find maybe the most just like personally,
spk_0
or I hope he feels that he's personally satisfied with.
spk_0
I think he's a great actor.
spk_0
And I think that is like a latent life thing.
spk_0
I don't think he was acting and stuff before he was a podcaster, frankly.
spk_0
Or maybe he wasn't, I'm just ignorant and didn't know.
spk_0
But you know, he's popped up and of course the Lin-Shellton movie was it sort of trust, really good.
spk_0
And he, he's popped up in movies like I forget he was in, wasn't he in that nick off from
spk_0
in movie as like the DJ at the beginning?
spk_0
He just pops up and stuff.
spk_0
No, it was the order.
spk_0
The order.
spk_0
The Jew order.
spk_0
Yeah, he played that radio DJ who was murdered.
spk_0
I think he makes such a, like he, his calling is character actor.
spk_0
I do think so.
spk_0
I feel like he eventually found it.
spk_0
And I hope he keeps popping up and stuff.
spk_0
Yeah, moving, affecting good little doc about Mark Marren.
spk_0
If you know him, I think you'll like it.
spk_0
And if you're unfamiliar with him, I think you'll maybe find it.
spk_0
Maybe still moving if you're interested in comedy or art or Lin-Shellton,
spk_0
who was such a great pal to filmmaker.
spk_0
I remember I saw hump day at a skirly screening in Chicago that a Nicole news hosted that she was at with two
spk_0
blasts and whoever else was in that movie.
spk_0
Yeah, I've always been a big fan.
spk_0
So yeah, it's a bummer.
spk_0
We'll never get more Lin-Shellton movies.
spk_0
She made some really interesting stuff.
spk_0
Definitely seek out her work if you haven't seen any of it.
spk_0
I'm three stars on, are we good?
spk_0
It's a very strong documentary.
spk_0
That bread, three stars for me too.
spk_0
All right.
spk_0
And we got some new ratings on Apple this week, but I don't think we got any new text writing reviews.
spk_0
I think we might have actually.
spk_0
Oh, sorry.
spk_0
Oh, yeah, yeah, you're right.
spk_0
That one is, but yeah, that one is this week.
spk_0
I just had already read it to my wife.
spk_0
It was so impressed with that that I forgot that we hadn't talked about it.
spk_0
F Hill 123 writes subtle sorcery perhaps.
spk_0
And they say, I don't know what it is about these guys.
spk_0
And therefore don't want to nitpick it apart and ruin what subtle magic makes this show what it is.
spk_0
And each listener will find that different thing for each of them that makes it work.
spk_0
Keep it up.
spk_0
Whatever sorcery is being used.
spk_0
Keep it up.
spk_0
Five stars.
spk_0
That's such a nice review that I feel like I don't know why I like this fucking show.
spk_0
But these guys they've got it and I appreciate it.
spk_0
And I appreciate that sentiment.
spk_0
That's really fun to me.
spk_0
So thank you very much.
spk_0
As always, you rate and review on Apple podcasts.
spk_0
We will read it.
spk_0
You rate on Spotify.
spk_0
I will note it and be very happy.
spk_0
So please do that.
spk_0
I also see your comments on Spotify, even though I can't reply as the owner anymore because I am banned from Spotify, which is so fucking stupid.
spk_0
And they do not have good customer service.
spk_0
I'm in an AI generated hell trying to talk to them about anything.
spk_0
But that's okay.
spk_0
The podcast is still there.
spk_0
It's still there for now.
spk_0
So weird.
spk_0
If the podcast ever gets pulled, we're going to have to figure out how Mark can start an account or something.
spk_0
I don't fucking know.
spk_0
But we'll figure it out.
spk_0
Well, of course that for do we get to it next week.
spk_0
Is there anything atop of mine that you are aware of?
spk_0
There's stuff.
spk_0
I don't let me see.
spk_0
I'll pull it up real quick.
spk_0
Sorry.
spk_0
All right. Oh, Tron.
spk_0
It's Tron Aries.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
Which I will be seeing on Monday.
spk_0
I believe then there's the expansion of an eminion, the Daniel Lewis.
spk_0
There's Roofman, the new Derek San France movie with Channing Tatum and Kirsten Dunst.
spk_0
Kiss the Spider Woman apparently is also out and limited.
spk_0
And I was supposed to have seen it, but I missed it.
spk_0
And if I didn't want to throw it through already think out.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
So yeah, kiss the Spider Woman if I had legs and after the hunt or all movies that I've missed
spk_0
screenings of because I was out of town.
spk_0
I can try to see them in the next week, but I don't know how realistic that is.
spk_0
But those are all limited and then expanding.
spk_0
So it doesn't make me feel that bad.
spk_0
And it doesn't make me feel too pressured because I'm going to have to the screenings
spk_0
got all this week is so weird that they are throwing like everything out on Wednesday night,
spk_0
which is going to be fun.
spk_0
I get to have to do like a double feature, come home and write both or at least one of them.
spk_0
And then I have to catch up with Tron because I'm so the only acts the only screening
spk_0
I'm planning on going to the next week that I know of is Tron at Monday morning.
spk_0
The rest I need to figure out.
spk_0
But we'll figure that out on our own time.
spk_0
We'll get it.
spk_0
All right, everybody.
spk_0
Thanks for listening.
spk_0
Here is I believe the band is called Alien Ant Farm and the song is called Movies.
spk_0
All right.
spk_0
Bye.
spk_0
The show starts in one.
spk_0
I just need a
spk_0
with your scene
spk_0
with us.
spk_0
Emotion.
spk_0
We're seeing.
spk_0
Wrong.
spk_0
Wrong.
spk_0
In summer,
spk_0
we can taste the wrecking.
spk_0
Now one new.
spk_0
To be free.
spk_0
Don't worry about me.
spk_0
And just like the movies we play out
spk_0
are the last scene.
spk_0
To complain.
spk_0
This game.
spk_0
We both want to know.
spk_0
And winter.
spk_0
We can taste the wrecking.
spk_0
In our short years.
spk_0
We've come long way.
spk_0
To treat it.
spk_0
But I'm proud of it.
spk_0
In our short years.
spk_0
We've come long way.
spk_0
To treat it.
spk_0
But I'm proud of it.
spk_0
I want you.
spk_0
To be free.
spk_0
Don't worry about me.
spk_0
And just like the movies
spk_0
we play out are the last scene.
spk_0
You won't cry.
spk_0
I won't scream.
spk_0
spk_0
spk_0
I won't cry.
spk_0
I won't cry.
spk_0
I won't cry.
spk_0
I won't cry.
spk_0
What?
spk_0
What?
spk_0
What the hell?
spk_0
I don't think I can go on.
spk_0
I'm going to die.
spk_0
I'm going to die.
spk_0
I don't think I can go on.
spk_0
spk_0
I want you.
spk_0
So, I'm going to die.
spk_0
I don't think I can go on.
spk_0
spk_0
spk_0
spk_0
spk_0
I won't cry.
spk_0
Tonight, you won't cry
spk_0
I won't scream
spk_0
I won't scream
