Amy Adams, what are you doing here?
spk_0
Yeah, welcome, welcome.
spk_0
We're going to be covering the Mandalorian Chapter 7, the recording sure enough later.
spk_0
But we got some very exciting news slash, slash rumors, slash rumors, rumors, I believe these rumors big time.
spk_0
You know, it's crazy to me, Mac, is that I know more about Star Wars starfighter than I do about the Mandalorian and Grogu, even after the teaser.
spk_0
Even after the teaser, that's so true.
spk_0
That's so true. I mean, in terms of the plot, for sure.
spk_0
That is kind of the information in question.
spk_0
We've got the rumor and everything that Amy Adams has been cast as a Jedi character in Star Wars starfighter.
spk_0
That's kind of telling us a lot about what the main premise of the movie may end up being.
spk_0
Yeah, so again, this is a rumor, but I actually, I think this is pretty spot on.
spk_0
It goes with what was originally reported the plot of the movie to be.
spk_0
But Amy Adams is supposedly, reportedly, playing the mother of the child, Flynn Gray's character,
spk_0
and has tasked Ryan Gosling's character to get him to safety.
spk_0
Now that safety, a lot of people are speculating is raise new Jedi order.
spk_0
I love this idea. Now, is this a little bit lone wolf and cub again?
spk_0
Yes, but I think with the twist a little bit with like the lone wolf being a Han Solo type instead of a bounty hunter samurai type.
spk_0
I think that does change the story.
spk_0
But I think the implications of Amy Adams being a Jedi is huge because I think that would suggest she is not a Jedi who was trained by Ray.
spk_0
But instead a Jedi trained by Luke.
spk_0
And that means there's more Jedi out there who survived Kylo Ren's purge.
spk_0
And I like that. I like that for several reasons.
spk_0
Number one, I think that makes it like, okay, Luke wasn't a total failure.
spk_0
Like, you know what I mean? Like not all of his Jedi died.
spk_0
Maybe they were scattered across the galaxy. They just kind of laid low.
spk_0
I would just knowing Amy Adams age, I think she was trained by Luke Skywalker.
spk_0
Now she's got Red Hair Mac.
spk_0
You know what people are going to start to speculate if Amy Adams is a Jedi with a red hair.
spk_0
Marjade is a red jacket.
spk_0
I mean, I think you can't not speculate on that because I think that most people are just naturally going to question that until we get like a different character name or something like that.
spk_0
No, that's not right.
spk_0
And until that confirmation comes, but you got to ask the question if she's Marjade, who's that kid?
spk_0
Yeah. Okay. Are you implying it could be a another Skywalker's born?
spk_0
Yes. Luke Skywalker's son.
spk_0
Yeah, it's really interesting.
spk_0
You know, I so I don't think the new Canon will ever have Marjade in it.
spk_0
Especially a character by that name with red hair and stuff like that. I'm almost like Amy Adams being a redhead and being kind of rumored to cast for this.
spk_0
I'm almost positive it's not going to be the character of Marjade.
spk_0
Yeah. I tried it for pronunciation.
spk_0
Feel like Marjade.
spk_0
No, no, Marjade has that more like firebrand type.
spk_0
Feel and Amy Adams is a much more.
spk_0
Yeah, she's usually playing fairly reserved characters and stuff like that.
spk_0
Yeah, I just watched enchanted the other day with my daughter and I can't get that whole performance out of my head of Amy Adam.
spk_0
It just doesn't match with Marjade.
spk_0
Now, she's, you know, she's an actress. She can play different parts and maybe it's, you know, she'd blow us away as Marjade.
spk_0
Oh my gosh, she's Marjade.
spk_0
But also, I feel like now, of course, the Canon age of Luke Skywalker is much different than Marcamel's actual age.
spk_0
Like he was like 54 in the last Jedi.
spk_0
Was he actually 54? No, he was in his 60s.
spk_0
Amy Adams.
spk_0
Hard 54 for the last.
spk_0
Well, you know, people once they get like past 45 and Star Wars except with the exception of Boca Tan, they age rapidly.
spk_0
I think Mandalorians are excluded from that law of the galaxy.
spk_0
They age backwards.
spk_0
They get younger looking.
spk_0
But no, yeah, I don't know.
spk_0
Like, but it seems like even then, like Luke and her, but I don't know if they really go together, but like we can.
spk_0
We can try, I guess.
spk_0
Yeah, I mean, so the questions that I immediately had come to mind when, you know, the information of Amy Adams, as a Jedi, mother of a child who has to get to safety for some reason.
spk_0
It makes me wonder, what's the threat that makes it so important that the kid gets to safety, right?
spk_0
Is it, yeah.
spk_0
Is it, you know, people hunting for sensitive children to try to do kind of the the inquisitor thing again, like kind of the kind of like Sith Order or something.
spk_0
Is it right?
spk_0
I also thought like, could it be that Ray kept some of the old regulations against attachments and relationships and stuff in place in the New Judo Academy?
spk_0
And Amy Adams broke those rules and maybe like maybe the kids under threat because the Jedi are looking for them.
spk_0
And which would make Ryan Gosling's kind of scoundrel character make a little more sense why he's the one, you know, in care of this kid.
spk_0
No, you ask a very interesting question like, okay, so if Amy Adams is a Jedi, why can't she get her her son to Ray?
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
So, so what's blocking her from doing it?
spk_0
I almost think there's like a secretive layer too.
spk_0
I almost think it has to be because she's like trying to keep it quiet for one reason or the other.
spk_0
Or she's like drawing them off in one direction while they go in another direction.
spk_0
I don't know, or maybe she dies.
spk_0
Maybe that's it.
spk_0
You know, you could be like Ryan Gosling's the only person around when she dies and she's like, you, you have to be it.
spk_0
Right.
spk_0
Take care of this kid, you know.
spk_0
Right.
spk_0
And I think if you're just a common person in the galaxy and you see a Jedi die in front of you unexpectedly, you're probably going to take that pretty seriously.
spk_0
I'm going to speculate that Ryan Gosling's character is the brother to Amy Adams character.
spk_0
I think he's the uncle because I remember there was like a report where he was like supposed to be the kids uncle.
spk_0
I think I think that's right.
spk_0
I could be totally wrong.
spk_0
Kids they even kind of look alike a little bit.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
They have a similar kind of look to them.
spk_0
So, I don't know.
spk_0
They could be living together, you know, all three of them in the same place.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Somebody comes for Amy Adams because she's a Jedi.
spk_0
But you know, Ryan Gosling and the kid get away.
spk_0
There's all kinds of ways that could be done.
spk_0
spk_0
But yeah, it's just cool to have some additional potential information about the premise and framing of Star Wars Starfighter.
spk_0
But we didn't just come here today to talk about future upcoming films after the year 2026.
spk_0
There is one, there's a feature film coming out before that that actually brings us here today.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
The Mandalorian and Grogu and we're preparing for it by rewatching every single episode of the Mandalorian and the Book of Boba Fett.
spk_0
So, we're on chapter seven now.
spk_0
The reckoning.
spk_0
Let's do this for sure.
spk_0
You're listening to Children of the Watch.
spk_0
I'm Mac Lacey and I'm Alex Maxwell.
spk_0
And like I said, we're continuing the Mandalorian rewatch to prepare for the next Star Wars movie, The Mandalorian and Grogu.
spk_0
We're rewatching every single episode of the Mandalorian and the Book of Boba Fett.
spk_0
If you're new to our podcast, we break down every single episode of Star Wars television.
spk_0
Seen by scene to analyze the story, find come for Easter eggs and explain how it all connects to the larger Star Wars universe.
spk_0
And we want to hear from you guys.
spk_0
How are you enjoying this Mandalorian rewatch?
spk_0
Are there things that you're noticing that maybe you didn't notice the first time through or the second or third or fourth or fifth, sixth?
spk_0
How many times you've watched the Mandalorian like we have.
spk_0
And now with the context of everything that we've seen, we're starting to put some things together.
spk_0
Have you noticed things you can call into our voicemail hotline and you could make it on to the show.
spk_0
205 259 66675 205 259 66675.
spk_0
Maybe you've got an awesome theory.
spk_0
We had one kind of at the beginning of this a dark saber theory from Katie from deer field that just absolutely blew us away.
spk_0
Maybe you got something like that or maybe it's something that you noticed of like, hey, no, the tracking fobs do this or you know, anything like that.
spk_0
You can call in, keep it under three minutes.
spk_0
If you mess up, hang up, try again, and we will use your best one.
spk_0
You can also follow us over on social media at COT watch on all the platforms.
spk_0
We're really trying to make a big push on tiktok and Instagram.
spk_0
So go follow us over there at COT watch.
spk_0
And then also we're on YouTube.
spk_0
And we want to make a big, big splash on YouTube.
spk_0
We're trying to build our audience over there.
spk_0
It doesn't really match our audio audience.
spk_0
So if you listen, maybe go over there and give us a like and subscribe and just check us out over there.
spk_0
That would be a huge help to us.
spk_0
But we actually got a voicemail right now that we're going to get to.
spk_0
Are you ready to do this?
spk_0
Let's do a voicemail.
spk_0
Let's do that.
spk_0
Hey, this is Noah from math.
spk_0
Jeff Colin, after I've gotten through your guys like teaser trailer podcast.
spk_0
And I'm going to say you guys got me real excited to the movie.
spk_0
I'm already excited.
spk_0
But now you guys are ramping up a notch.
spk_0
Can't wait for the new movie to come out.
spk_0
One thing that I was laughing at is I was laughing that Alex pointed out that people would be mad if.
spk_0
Moskidian was the villain.
spk_0
Well, I agree with Mac that Jean Carlo is the Zito is an amazing actor and he would be a good draw.
spk_0
I also agree that I think it would be kind of like obnoxious to include him as the main villain.
spk_0
I feel like at this point it wouldn't even be something that like angered fans or maybe anger me specifically.
spk_0
But it would totally take me out of the movie.
spk_0
I feel like I'd be like like we're doing this again.
spk_0
Like I just did this for three seasons in a row.
spk_0
So maybe it like rubs off the wrong way for people that have watched the series.
spk_0
But what are your thoughts on how it could be perceived for people that maybe haven't watched the full series and are just joining us for the movie.
spk_0
Do you think it would be good to include something like that because he was a good villain.
spk_0
He is a great actor.
spk_0
So you do have to give him that.
spk_0
I just think for fans that have been watching with it the whole time.
spk_0
It would kind of take us out of it a little bit.
spk_0
But I could also kind of like what you guys said.
spk_0
See them doing it, especially if it was being a more attractive option for all the new fans.
spk_0
They hope to bring into the movie just wanted to get your thoughts but keep watching.
spk_0
Hey, this is Noah from math.
spk_0
All right, thank you, Noah.
spk_0
What do you think about that, Mag.
spk_0
I think, you know, like we kind of hashed this out on our breakdown of the teaser.
spk_0
I don't think either of us want that to happen.
spk_0
No, I think it would feel very much like a fourth death star attempt in a film.
spk_0
It's not what I want.
spk_0
We are just saying prepare yourself.
spk_0
I think maybe prepare yourself though because I think what they're going to try to do with the Mandalorian and Grogu is encapsulate all of the elements of the Mandalorian kind of into one small package that gets more people even invested in the star wars television.
spk_0
And ecosystem and all of that.
spk_0
And while I don't necessarily like I love Jean Carlos Espositos performance as Gideon.
spk_0
I like Gideon as a villain.
spk_0
I think he's great in the series and stuff.
spk_0
I don't necessarily view him as something essential to like what makes the Mandalorian the Mandalorian, you know.
spk_0
So I think it'd be much better to just tell a solid fresh new story.
spk_0
Give us a new villain or maybe, you know, a lesser used character and elevate them to a prime film villain spot.
spk_0
Like, like, embo is kind of do something like that.
spk_0
Give the audiences just a fresh, fun viewing experience.
spk_0
And they'll, you know, go back to watch the show.
spk_0
That's going to happen.
spk_0
I don't think you have to also have Gideon in there to get them to want to check out the show.
spk_0
No, I totally agree with you.
spk_0
And yeah, like I said, I don't think either of us actually want that.
spk_0
It's just like the pattern that is being we're seeing with the Mandalorian is they're bringing back a lot of things.
spk_0
That went away like the Razor crest.
spk_0
It's back. They rebuilt it.
spk_0
You know, like the dark saber thing is gone for right now.
spk_0
They're back to doing kind of a season one sort of style.
spk_0
Everything just feels like they're going back instead of forward.
spk_0
And you know, that was I think, I think that criticism.
spk_0
Let it's way into the discourse around this teaser.
spk_0
A lot of people Mac were not super impressed by this Mandalorian and Grogoo teaser.
spk_0
Now we were because like we've got green tinted glasses on because we love the Mandalorian so much, right?
spk_0
Of course.
spk_0
That's, I mean, literally our podcast is named after it.
spk_0
And so like it's huge to us.
spk_0
It's so important to us.
spk_0
And so we're always going to look for the positives and try to celebrate everything Mandalorian.
spk_0
But there were a lot of people that weren't too impressed with what they saw because it just kind of looked like more of the same.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
And like there was nothing new to draw in people of like, oh my gosh, I've got to see that in the theater where it just kind of felt like maybe an episode of the next season instead of
spk_0
is this really worthy of being on the big screen.
spk_0
And so that debate kind of happened online.
spk_0
I think it was several things.
spk_0
So I think it's that feeling that's lingered since season three of the Mandalorian and a lot of the criticism that people had of season three.
spk_0
But then also the thing that was going on with Jimmy Kimmel and Disney Plus and all of that.
spk_0
I think it was a terrible time to release the teaser to be honest with you.
spk_0
I think that was just like, it's obviously like, let's release something so we kind of get out of this bad press cycle.
spk_0
Right.
spk_0
But I think people were so still upset about what was going on with Jimmy Kimmel.
spk_0
And finally they made the right decision with that.
spk_0
But I think people are still kind of mad even with the teaser out and just like, I don't know, I just think it was probably a bad time to release this.
spk_0
And it stirred up a lot of emotions online, Mac.
spk_0
Well, I was none the wiser because I was just living in my little excited for the Mandalorian and Groove Battle bubble.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
But to get back to the question at hand, I don't want Gideon to be a large presence in the film or anything.
spk_0
But I do think it's possible that that's going to happen.
spk_0
And we should all kind of brace ourselves for that.
spk_0
Well, we're going to talk about it in this episode because Gideon is actually introduced in this episode that we're talking about today.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
And so like, we're going to have to talk about what's his end goal.
spk_0
Let's see, actually trying to do like we know that from season three, it was the cloning stuff.
spk_0
That's still a dangling thread that needs to be picked up because that's going to eventually lead to snow, and then Palpatine and the sequel trilogy.
spk_0
So someone's got to find what Gideon was doing and how is that going to happen?
spk_0
So like if Gideon's not going to be in the movie, I think his presence is at least going to probably be felt.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
I would imagine.
spk_0
Yeah, for sure.
spk_0
You know, I mean, we do need some follow up on some of that kind of stuff.
spk_0
I just, I'd rather have it in a different story, I think.
spk_0
I'd rather focus on on Dining Grogu for the film.
spk_0
But anyway, as you mentioned, we have an episode to break down today.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
I think we should probably get to that 18 minutes in.
spk_0
Let's do it.
spk_0
So chapter seven, the reckoning, the air date was December 18, 2019.
spk_0
This came out the same day, well, technically the day before, but most movie theaters do the Thursday night previews.
spk_0
The same day is the rise of Skywalker.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
That was crazy.
spk_0
That was a wild experience.
spk_0
It was such a wild because we woke up so early to watch this.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Knowing we would be going to see them maybe like that night.
spk_0
spk_0
And then we saw the rise of Skywalker.
spk_0
We saw it.
spk_0
We were like, at least we watched the man in the war and finale.
spk_0
Sorry to the tross fans out there.
spk_0
We don't handle anything.
spk_0
It's just a.
spk_0
It's a.
spk_0
Didn't live up to what I wanted.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Yes.
spk_0
So yeah.
spk_0
And it's what's interesting.
spk_0
And we'll get to it when we get to that part in this episode.
spk_0
This kind of beat rise of Skywalker to the punch with the force healing stuff.
spk_0
Yep.
spk_0
And there's a major connection there of like, okay, this is a, this is something new.
spk_0
We haven't really seen before.
spk_0
Well, we have just not on this level.
spk_0
It's always been around in video games and books.
spk_0
And stuff like that.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
So I feel like the concept has been around.
spk_0
But yeah, this was the first time we actually saw it happen on screen like in the proper saga.
spk_0
You know.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
And it's.
spk_0
It's wild that like the Mandalorian beat the movie to the punch.
spk_0
Even though I feel like the movie probably had the idea first.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Just way productions work and stuff.
spk_0
I don't know.
spk_0
It's interesting that both of those things happen on the same day.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
It could have honestly been like, maybe we'll do it in the Mandalorian first just so that like.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
That everybody can already wrap your head around that being.
spk_0
And so by the time you get into the movie, you know, it doesn't, it doesn't draw you.
spk_0
But right.
spk_0
Who knows?
spk_0
Who knows?
spk_0
Maybe director Debra Chalnos or the writer John Favreaux knows.
spk_0
So I do want to say dialogue wise.
spk_0
This is some of John Favreaux's best work in this.
spk_0
He's right.
spk_0
There are some.
spk_0
And I don't mean in terms of like what would win the Emmy or the Oscar.
spk_0
But in terms of just wild, memorable lines that get stuck in my head.
spk_0
Like can I offer you a live break,
spk_0
to celebrate the completion of our shared narrative or whatever he says?
spk_0
John Favreaux really likes that theatrical language.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
I mean, he uses it with grief with the client.
spk_0
They both talk like they're in some sort of Shakespearean play.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
It's good.
spk_0
It's good.
spk_0
I like it.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
All right.
spk_0
So let's jump into it on the razor crest.
spk_0
The Mandalorian,
spk_0
Den Jaren,
spk_0
gets a hologram from grief cargo.
spk_0
Grief basically tells him the client's taken over my city.
spk_0
Business is dead.
spk_0
We can't get close to him.
spk_0
Here's the deal.
spk_0
Bring the kid back his bait.
spk_0
We take the client out and you get to keep the kid.
spk_0
Oh, and I'll clear your name with the guild.
spk_0
And then he like throws out the man of honor thing.
spk_0
Landed on real thick.
spk_0
Yeah, like really trying to put the hooks in.
spk_0
And immediately that kind of puts us on edge, right?
spk_0
Yes.
spk_0
I don't trust him.
spk_0
Grief in this episode,
spk_0
it surprised me on this rewatch.
spk_0
Because after seeing season two and season three,
spk_0
he's such a friend in my mind that what he's doing in this episode,
spk_0
it took me by surprise again.
spk_0
Like I was watching it for the first time.
spk_0
Like it almost was a bigger twist for me this go around.
spk_0
Just because of what we know, he, you know, the person we know he grows to be.
spk_0
And I think too, like if you remember back,
spk_0
I don't think we actually trust Grief until season two,
spk_0
episode four, the siege.
spk_0
Like that's when we're like,
spk_0
okay, I think he's actually on their side now.
spk_0
Like even throughout this episode and next week's episode,
spk_0
we're always kind of on edge with Grief of like,
spk_0
is he going to double cross us, you know?
spk_0
And I think we're supposed to feel that way with him.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
For sure.
spk_0
It was just like that it was even elevated knowing the post character growth grief, I guess.
spk_0
Right.
spk_0
Yes, absolutely.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
So it didn't look at the sleeping kid.
spk_0
You can tell he's torn that he sets course for Sorgon.
spk_0
And that's where Cara Dune is.
spk_0
When he finds her, she's in the middle of a fight tied by this laser tether
spk_0
to a Zabrak who's bigger and stronger,
spk_0
but she just totally takes him down.
spk_0
This kind of, this, this sort of fight is kind of cool.
spk_0
I'm not going to lie.
spk_0
It's, it's like a strap match in WWE or whatever.
spk_0
Like the belt buckle thing.
spk_0
Like a dog collar match.
spk_0
I think they call it where they've got like a big leather strap between them.
spk_0
Yeah, it is exactly that.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
So after the fight, Mando shows up with the kid and ask if she wants in at first,
spk_0
she says no, she's laying low because of the bounty on her head.
spk_0
But once Dinn mentions that they'd be up against an imperial, ex imperial warlord,
spk_0
she's all in.
spk_0
She's sold because like that's really what she wants to do.
spk_0
That's what she's known for doing.
spk_0
And she doesn't, she doesn't like, I don't think laying low on Sorgon.
spk_0
No, it's clear that like she's never left the fight.
spk_0
The war never ended for her.
spk_0
Like she's, she's never been able to find her place in the galaxy after the rebellion and everything.
spk_0
So I think like this represents an opportunity for her to pick that fight back up.
spk_0
You know, so that's like that's, that's the thing that gets her on board.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
So on the way back, Cara asks if grief knows she's coming and Dinn admits that he hasn't mentioned it,
spk_0
but she brushes it off as grief's problem.
spk_0
While gearing up, she asks if she, if he even trusts grief and Mando's honest, not really,
spk_0
but he can't keep running forever.
spk_0
Like at some point, he's got to stop doing what they're doing because everywhere they've been,
spk_0
they've all been trying to get Grogu.
spk_0
It's all been a problem.
spk_0
He's ready just to take care of it.
spk_0
The guild won't stop until Grogu's gone.
spk_0
So he needs her help.
spk_0
But then of course Grogu comes down and decides to like, he's peaking on them having that conversation.
spk_0
And I don't think I realize this until the rewatch of this.
spk_0
But he's listening to what they're saying.
spk_0
And I think he's trying to steer the ship based on what they were talking about.
spk_0
I don't think he's just being like a toddler and just messing with the controls.
spk_0
I think he actually understood what they were saying and was like trying to attempt something
spk_0
in terms of like, let's not do this.
spk_0
Or you know what I mean?
spk_0
Does that make sense?
spk_0
Like I think he's aware, as we know, he's more aware than what we realized.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
So it seems to me, like when I watched it, it just reminded me of like when I was like three or four
spk_0
and my mom was in choir practice at church and had just brought me and I was like hanging out just like in the pews
spk_0
while she was up on stage or whatever.
spk_0
And nobody was behind the soundboard.
spk_0
Everybody left the soundboard on the table.
spk_0
So I, you know, it's a whole set of sliders, knobs and dials.
spk_0
Like what isn't attractive about that?
spk_0
So I of course, you know, went up and just started messing with stuff and made every speaker in the entire show.
spk_0
Feedback in a terrible way and just ground everything to a halt.
spk_0
That's what it seemed like to me.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
I can, I see what you're saying.
spk_0
The only reason I say that is because he pokes his head out and he's watching them and listening to them.
spk_0
And then he pops up and does it.
spk_0
But you're probably right.
spk_0
I mean, he is still just a kid and he's just messing with the controls.
spk_0
And who wouldn't want to try to fly that thing if they had the opportunity?
spk_0
Some delicious levers, knobs and dials.
spk_0
Don't even get me started on the buttons.
spk_0
Maybe you should change your podcast to that name.
spk_0
Lever's knobs and dials.
spk_0
Yes.
spk_0
Like oyster's clams and goggles.
spk_0
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
So he sends the ship veering off and Kara just gives, Dinn, a look like, yeah, we're going to need a babysitter.
spk_0
So next, Dinn and Kara head back to our vol 7 to see Quill at his moisture farm.
spk_0
Quill takes one look at Grogu and points out that he hasn't grown much.
spk_0
And he actually makes this very interesting observation, Mack.
spk_0
He says he doesn't think the kid was genetically engineered because he looks to evolve to natural.
spk_0
Now, let's stop on that one real quick because I think that was like a little seed maybe for us as an audience.
spk_0
To start thinking, oh, okay.
spk_0
So they might have thought that he was cloned someone thought he was cloned just the concept of cloning being thrown into the show at this point in the series.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Well, it was even earlier.
spk_0
I think Quill in maybe the second episode.
spk_0
He was like, I think he, he supposed that Grogu could have been from like some cloning vats somewhere.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
And then this is him walking that back.
spk_0
But you're right.
spk_0
They, they, they seeded that idea in there, you know, pretty quickly.
spk_0
And I think it's something that when the show was coming out, we were talking about because of, you know, the background of purging and the client.
spk_0
And we, you know, not knowing what's going on there.
spk_0
And it's obviously some, you know, impact.
spk_0
Exactly. Exactly.
spk_0
So we, we, even at this point, the first time through as the show was debuting, I think we were talking about is Grogu maybe a creation of the empire or something like that.
spk_0
I think this is Quill kind of, kind of clue in us in that, no, this is just a hundred percent organic baby Yoda.
spk_0
All natural.
spk_0
I, I do remember a theory that I feel like we talked about in our very first breakdowns that we did of this back in 2019 of like, what if he was a clone of actually Yoda?
spk_0
Like he's literally like a clone of Yoda.
spk_0
I think we, that was a theory in, in your right.
spk_0
I think this is them saying, no, that's not what this is.
spk_0
He is, he is his own thing.
spk_0
Then, then Quill gets a little jab at Kira saying she was farm bread and the cytokaves of Nora, which I want to know what the cytokaves of Nora are.
spk_0
I think that's just like in the South, we'd just like call somebody corn fed.
spk_0
Like, oh, he's a good old corn fed boy.
spk_0
You know what I'm saying?
spk_0
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
spk_0
It just means like stout party.
spk_0
Usually, usually implies little husky.
spk_0
Yeah, that's totally what he's saying.
spk_0
So, and this is, this is kind of backtracking a little bit.
spk_0
Why do you think they come to Quill for the babysitter instead of like say, Pele from Tatooine?
spk_0
I don't know.
spk_0
I guess Dinn didn't have, I mean, maybe Dinn didn't trust Pele yet, but Pele would have been a way better babysitter.
spk_0
Yeah, I think Quill is more of your like mechanic guy.
spk_0
Mechanic slash like spiritual leader.
spk_0
Yeah, it's a nice or mechanic.
spk_0
Right.
spk_0
You know, he's your grease monkey wise man kind of like the uncle from one tree hill.
spk_0
Yeah, there you go.
spk_0
There you go.
spk_0
I don't, I'm not familiar with that.
spk_0
Yeah, I was going to know what I'm talking about.
spk_0
Yeah, there's some takers out there.
spk_0
I don't want to be anything other than that.
spk_0
I've been trying to be lay lay.
spk_0
They're just basketball players.
spk_0
They're two brothers from different moms who compete with one another.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
And you know, they end up becoming friends and the dad character on that show by the way.
spk_0
All time.
spk_0
Villain like the best villain I think I've ever seen incredible performance by that man.
spk_0
Oh man, what a what a guy.
spk_0
I think his name is Dan in the show.
spk_0
Dan.
spk_0
All right, shout out Dan from one trail.
spk_0
All right.
spk_0
Anyway.
spk_0
Back to the side of caves of Nora.
spk_0
I just like it because it's one of those funny like star wars one liners,
spk_0
but it casually drops this like cool bit of world building.
spk_0
And that's what star I feel like star wars does that better than anybody, right?
spk_0
Like I think back to the original star wars and just the casual drop of we fought in the clone wars.
spk_0
Like what is that?
spk_0
Like oh, what?
spk_0
Like what?
spk_0
spk_0
What?
spk_0
I want to know more about that.
spk_0
Exactly.
spk_0
It's the idea of like this this lived in world with its own history and you know all these these.
spk_0
It's a vast variety of locals and everything.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Maybe we'll see the side of caves of Nora one day.
spk_0
I'm sure we will.
spk_0
So Dan introduces care properly explaining she used to be a rebel shock trooper.
spk_0
Quill on the other hand says that he served on the other side, not as a soldier,
spk_0
but as an indentured worker until he managed to pay off his debts and free himself.
spk_0
And you really get this sense of Quill's philosophy here.
spk_0
Everything he says comes back to freedom, patience and earning your place.
spk_0
Like he's a really like he says this later in the episode like working with your hands.
spk_0
Like he is very down to earth.
spk_0
And I think the implication is that he might have worked on Cloud City.
spk_0
I mean, it's hard to shake that association, right?
spk_0
I mean, he's an agnot.
spk_0
We know that he was enslaved by the empire.
spk_0
The only other place we've actually seen that on screen is best.
spk_0
Right.
spk_0
So I imagine he was it may not have been exactly on Cloud City could have been somewhere else,
spk_0
but doing that kind of thing.
spk_0
He's just in some shop in an industrial facility somewhere,
spk_0
Slaven away for 20 hours a day or whatever.
spk_0
Right.
spk_0
Right.
spk_0
Yeah, then comes IG 11 totally reprogrammed carrying a tray of tea and immediately Cara and Din whip out their blasters because you know,
spk_0
the last time IG 11 tried to kill Grogu,
spk_0
but Quill calms them down and he explains how he salvaged the droid from the old encampment and claimed it under the charter of the new republic.
spk_0
But here's the cool part.
spk_0
IG 11 basically had to relearn everything from scratch and we get this montage of it.
spk_0
And it's really honestly, I enjoy this montage a lot.
spk_0
I do too.
spk_0
It's I think that my first time through I had some issues with it.
spk_0
I'm like, I think you really just wanted to do some stop motion and have this cute little sequence stuff.
spk_0
And like it is cute.
spk_0
It's great.
spk_0
But like what is this really the more I thought about it though,
spk_0
it's like if you have a thinking machine, it would have to get calibrated.
spk_0
It would have to calibrate itself.
spk_0
It had to understand the relationship between inputs and outputs and how to turn those into accomplished intentions.
spk_0
So and I really enjoy just like it's a beautiful little moment.
spk_0
I can listen to Quill talk about stuff all day.
spk_0
I love his he's just got such a calming presence and voice from Nignolting.
spk_0
I mean, like you wouldn't expect that, but like I feel like he killed this role.
spk_0
Yeah, absolutely.
spk_0
Oh, and I mean, he's he's one of the best parts of season one.
spk_0
I think.
spk_0
Oh, yeah, sure.
spk_0
And it's still lingers with the Mandalorian, I feel like.
spk_0
Yeah, I mean, I still I think through season three, we were talking still about how much we missed Quill.
spk_0
Spoiler alert.
spk_0
But yeah, I love this sequence.
spk_0
I love just this small moment to it.
spk_0
I mean, it shows Quill's intention with everything he does and and you know, his understanding of just beings and how they grow,
spk_0
even if they're mechanical and all that kind of stuff.
spk_0
It's I just he's a great character.
spk_0
He is.
spk_0
Yeah, so Quill describes teaching him step by step with patience and affirmation and over time the droids developed an entirely new personality and became useful again.
spk_0
And it's kind of this nature versus nurture argument, I think happening in the show, but with the droid, which I think is super fun.
spk_0
And so star awards.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
And it's also very pertinent to things at hand, right?
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Because Din is a Mandalorian, the ancestral enemy of the Jedi programmed to walk this code and everything.
spk_0
And then one day his entire world's turned upside down.
spk_0
And it's, you know, it's can he learn to kind of overcome his origins and what he is expected to do and everything to, you know, take care of this kid and to rise to that occasion.
spk_0
And, right.
spk_0
And you know, there's there's all kinds of those like that theme is just so prevalent in the show.
spk_0
And I think this is one of the more like succinct and poignant places that it's explored.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
And it's good, but the problem is Din doesn't buy it.
spk_0
He's not there yet.
spk_0
You know, he wants to droid race.
spk_0
Yeah, he's got some droidism in him for sure.
spk_0
He wants Quill's help, but not IG 11s.
spk_0
And Quill refuses to go back into any one service after all.
spk_0
He fought his whole life to be free, but he will help to protect Grogu from imperial hands.
spk_0
He even offers to make IG 11 the kids nanny, which Mando instantly shuts down.
spk_0
Like absolutely not.
spk_0
We're not doing that because of course he doesn't want the assassin droid anywhere near Grogu because of his own experiences with droids as a kid.
spk_0
So Quill pushes back saying droids aren't inherently good or bad.
spk_0
They just reflect the intent of the people who programmed them.
spk_0
So trust me.
spk_0
If you trust me, you can trust IG 11 eventually Quill convinces Din that IG 11 should come along.
spk_0
And he makes it clear he's not doing this for money.
spk_0
He's doing it because he wants to see the old ways of imperial rule gone forever.
spk_0
Oh, and he insists on bringing the blurgs to because what's a rescue mission without some giant space lizards?
spk_0
Yeah, I mean, you know, I just love it.
spk_0
I do too.
spk_0
I see it's like I, you know, I have spoken and that's it.
spk_0
That's it. That's what we're doing.
spk_0
They're getting loaded up.
spk_0
That's right.
spk_0
So yeah, now we've got the blurgs packed onto the razor crest cargo hold, which I'm sure just smells great.
spk_0
And while they're traveling Cara and Din get into an arm wrestling match because of course.
spk_0
And it's playful at first kind of flirtatious a little bit.
spk_0
And then and then Grogu sees Din struggling and thinks Cara is actually hurting him.
spk_0
And next thing you know, he is just straight up force choking her.
spk_0
And it's interesting.
spk_0
Now that okay.
spk_0
I just had this thought.
spk_0
He's seen that before with the nature versus nurture thing.
spk_0
He's seen somebody force choke somebody before I think.
spk_0
Do you think so?
spk_0
I think so.
spk_0
I don't know.
spk_0
I think maybe I think that could just be a like to me it was maybe just the that's how the unbridled urged protect his dad.
spk_0
Just like manifested.
spk_0
Yeah, I know I totally agree with that.
spk_0
But like.
spk_0
Do you maybe maybe maybe not maybe maybe maybe he just naturally knows how to do this.
spk_0
But like.
spk_0
I guess so.
spk_0
I guess it's not that hard to force choke somebody.
spk_0
spk_0
But I mean, to your point, if you're going to go no no Mac, it's fine.
spk_0
It's fine.
spk_0
You proved me wrong once again.
spk_0
Let's just keep going.
spk_0
Let's move on.
spk_0
I'm just dropping.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
Let's just drop and go.
spk_0
Hey, you're my friend and I'm glad to be this podcast with you.
spk_0
I don't want to be anything.
spk_0
I've been trying to be lay lay.
spk_0
All right.
spk_0
So she's getting forced jokes.
spk_0
I.
spk_0
This is really chilling.
spk_0
It's this really chilling moment.
spk_0
And you realize how protective and dangerous.
spk_0
And then you realize that you're just.
spk_0
Grogu can be.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
And then has to quickly stop him because I don't think he realizes that first he's like,
spk_0
is she choking on her spit?
spk_0
What's happening?
spk_0
Right.
spk_0
You know, because he has no experience with the force.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
And.
spk_0
And he has to explain that Cara's a friend and Quill points out that.
spk_0
Grogu is just curious, but Cara is visibly shaken.
spk_0
She's like freaked out.
spk_0
She's like, we got it.
spk_0
What is this?
spk_0
It's like you can say whatever you want, but you weren't feeling it's invisible hands around your
spk_0
trachea.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
It's easy for you to say.
spk_0
And Grogu gets like a little evil squint going on and stuff when he does it too.
spk_0
At first he's like, he's unsure.
spk_0
But then once he's got it, he kind of leans into it and gives that little evil, evil dark
spk_0
sidey glare.
spk_0
That's interesting.
spk_0
I wonder if that will ever be explored in future projects or in the movie that's coming
spk_0
up of like the dark side and Grogu's struggle with that of like because it tempts everybody.
spk_0
Is it going to attempt him?
spk_0
And like your dad's a man to Lurian, you know, it's not like you're being raised in the
spk_0
Jedi temple.
spk_0
I think the dark side may attempt and attempt to lure Grogu in ways that other people may
spk_0
not be vulnerable to.
spk_0
No, I think that's a totally valid, uh, explain it or idea because like my mind immediately
spk_0
goes back to Tarvizla of like that guy had to struggle with the dark side had to.
spk_0
Of course.
spk_0
And we can't get on another Tarvizla tangent because we can we could be here for an hour.
spk_0
But like we don't know exactly what what Jedi order Tarvizla is from, right?
spk_0
We don't know if they're doctrineally the same deal.
spk_0
We don't know if struggling with the dark side looks the same for Tarvizla's time as
spk_0
it does for like, you know, what we've seen.
spk_0
But I would I would venture to say that there's going to be some ideological clash and like
spk_0
some some dissidents that is going to have to be dealt with in one way or another.
spk_0
Um, I mean, I think that's the whole dilemma and everything with Luke, uh, wanting to
spk_0
train Grogu.
spk_0
And, um, so he's probably safer, you know, receiving training from a Jedi and being tempered
spk_0
in that way.
spk_0
Um, but like also with that just increases abilities and make him more dangerous.
spk_0
I mean, this is a, this is a time honored argument in Star Wars.
spk_0
Does he become Kylo Ren in the sea exactly?
spk_0
spk_0
So yeah, I don't know, but it's, it's cool.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
So Quill also connects the dots to Dins earlier fight with the mudhorn though he admits
spk_0
that he can't name what this power actually is.
spk_0
Just I can like emphasizing that the gauks is a big place.
spk_0
They don't know all of the terms that we the audience knows, right?
spk_0
Like they might have heard some stories before, but they like they don't know it's called
spk_0
the force.
spk_0
Not everyone does, um, especially in this time period.
spk_0
So this leads into care asking Quill how he ever managed to walk free of imperial servitude
spk_0
and Quill explains it so plainly.
spk_0
He bought his freedom through the work of his hands, the skills he had mastered and the
spk_0
laborer of what he calls three human lifetimes.
spk_0
Basically, he paid his debt and full and he reminds her not to underestimate him.
spk_0
And meanwhile, Dins gets Quill's help at padding the child's pram and Quill treats it almost
spk_0
like a lesson showing how his craftsmanship is the proof of the freedom he earned.
spk_0
And while Quill works, Dins and Kara talk about Navarro and Kara admits that she's never
spk_0
been, but she knows the new republic lost a lot of troops there.
spk_0
And she points out that the city is dug in deep with no cover and nightmare to fight through
spk_0
and that it stayed imperial controlled into the very end of the war.
spk_0
So like Navarro is not a pro republic place, pro alliance place even.
spk_0
And it's never really been that way until I guess grief takes over later.
spk_0
But yeah, Dins then reveals the client is a former imperial officer in that he wants
spk_0
took out an imperial safe house himself, which to him means that there are probably more
spk_0
ex-imperial forces still hold up on Navarro and of course, Dins still doesn't trust IG11.
spk_0
No matter what Quill says and makes it clear he won't leave Grogu in the droids care.
spk_0
So the razor crest lands out in this remote stretch of Navarro.
spk_0
We're back to Navarro at this point.
spk_0
Far away from town.
spk_0
That's where grief cargo shows up with three hunters backing him up, a human, a nicto,
spk_0
and a Trans-Dotion.
spk_0
And he explains that he set the meeting spot away out here because the city itself
spk_0
is crawling with ex-imperial forces now.
spk_0
But it also kind of gives you like, no, this isn't what we were expecting.
spk_0
I think immediately this puts everybody kind of on it, right?
spk_0
I mean, you know, something's up when he brings armed guards.
spk_0
Yeah, you would imagine.
spk_0
spk_0
Because like previously, Mando and Grief were just meeting in a, in a cantina booth somewhere,
spk_0
just themselves, you know, like they were on those terms.
spk_0
And so this is the situation has certainly changed.
spk_0
It has changed.
spk_0
Yeah, so Dins, Cara, and Quill all ride out in blurgs while IG11 stays back with the ship.
spk_0
And right away, grief suggests Cara should hang behind to protect the razor crest,
spk_0
throwing his little jab about Jawha scavenging in the lava fields.
spk_0
But Dins shuts that down and insists that she's coming with them.
spk_0
Grief lets it go, but tells Cara to cover up her rebel tattoo,
spk_0
because that kind of identifies her as a shock trooper.
spk_0
And then he has this funny little bit where he asked to hold a grogu,
spk_0
and he finds them cute, and then he shifts back to business.
spk_0
So this might be the melting of Grief's heart here of like, once he actually holds
spk_0
grogu, it's like, oh.
spk_0
I mean, he even sees this.
spk_0
Yeah, he even says to Dins.
spk_0
He's like, oh, I, I see why, you know, I see, I see what all the fuss is about now.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
I think there's certainly the seeds of, you know, his heart opening up.
spk_0
I don't think you get what happens at, you're the next night, if this doesn't happen.
spk_0
Right. Thank you for agreeing with me.
spk_0
With, with desk, with desk coming, he suggests that they cut across the lava fields and make camp for the night.
spk_0
At the campfire, they're grilling up some kind of four-legged beast and grief notes that the child
spk_0
is definitely a carnivore.
spk_0
And around the fire, Grief goes over the plan.
spk_0
They're going to walk into the common house, present grogu as bait, and then kill the client right there at the table.
spk_0
Dint presses them about reinforcements, but Grief just weighs it off, calling them mercenaries.
spk_0
He insists that there's only four bodyguards and nothing can possibly go wrong, which of course
spk_0
means everything will.
spk_0
And also, you, like, you realize that he's lying because if it's just five people,
spk_0
can't the bounty hunters just take care of this themselves?
spk_0
Like, why do they need Dinn to do this?
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Like, the story doesn't add up.
spk_0
Right.
spk_0
You know, and this is no, there's no mention of, yeah, sure, you take out these five
spk_0
impurials or whatever, but then who else is on the planet that's immediately going to come
spk_0
after you and all that kind of stuff.
spk_0
And it turns out that what the actual issue ends up being, they could never have foreseen anyway.
spk_0
spk_0
Right.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
And then right on cue, tear dactyls just swoop down from the sky.
spk_0
Just straight up tear dactyls.
spk_0
Yeah, they're just tear dactyls.
spk_0
They're called reptevi and swoops, but actually, they're just tear dactyls.
spk_0
Oh, you mean reptilian flying creatures like tear dactyls?
spk_0
Yes.
spk_0
tear dactyls.
spk_0
Yeah, tear dactyls, by the way, my least favorite dinosaur.
spk_0
I don't like it.
spk_0
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
But not technical dinosaurs.
spk_0
Alex just quit the podcast.
spk_0
What are they, Mack?
spk_0
I don't know, but they're not.
spk_0
They're dinosaurs.
spk_0
Let's just say they're flying reptiles.
spk_0
I think they're giant flying reptiles.
spk_0
I don't like the way they look.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
There's something very Tim Burton about them that I don't like are,
spk_0
you know, it's like if Tim Burton designed a bird, it's a tear dactyl.
spk_0
So you're just hating on them because they look busted?
spk_0
I don't like it.
spk_0
Like they're long beaks and then they're long backhead.
spk_0
The backhead.
spk_0
I don't know what you call that.
spk_0
It's like a unicorn horn going the wrong way.
spk_0
A reverse rhino.
spk_0
I don't like it.
spk_0
I don't like these things.
spk_0
Anyway, suddenly the whole camp is under attack by these vicious tear dactyls.
spk_0
And and Dinlux, Grogu and his pram for safety while everyone opens fire.
spk_0
The creatures grab a blurg and even try to carry off the Trans-Ocean Hunter.
spk_0
Another beast goes after a second blurg and it gets shot down.
spk_0
And what really sex is like Quill being like, no.
spk_0
I know.
spk_0
He really loves these blurg.
spk_0
I know, I just love them.
spk_0
And then Din finally breaks out the flamethrower and drives the rest of them off.
spk_0
The flamethrower was only like his like third impulse here when normally it's his absolute
spk_0
first resort.
spk_0
Why didn't he just get his big blaster out and just vaporize these things?
spk_0
Start disappearing them.
spk_0
I mean, no, like, jawless.
spk_0
But in Greek, they're not sentient.
spk_0
They don't have families.
spk_0
Uh.
spk_0
Oh, like somewhere, somewhere the jawless have erected a monument to the victims of Dinjaran.
spk_0
I love to think that the jawless like end their mythology.
spk_0
Din is like Satan.
spk_0
Like just, yeah, just the word.
spk_0
Like we do not trust this guy.
spk_0
Cosmologically evil.
spk_0
But he still gave them the egg so they have to kind of honor him a little bit, right?
spk_0
Like it's just like this weird kind of dichotomy that they have with Dinjara.
spk_0
It's like a Greek god understanding.
spk_0
We're like, he's just, yeah, you're kind of terrible.
spk_0
But like, we got to, you know, you could you could strike us down with a lightning bolt.
spk_0
So we're also thanks for this stuff that you guys.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
That's a fun thought that the jawless having done as a figure in their their, their,
spk_0
their cosmology.
spk_0
I love it.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
So griefs in bad shape.
spk_0
His arm is just shredded and the venom is already spreading.
spk_0
He thinks it's the end for him like the way he's acting.
spk_0
He's like, oh god, I'm this is it.
spk_0
It's so good.
spk_0
I love car lovers.
spk_0
I love car lovers in this.
spk_0
Like his, he's just over the top enough for what's going on.
spk_0
It's perfect.
spk_0
Tell my mother I love to just doing all the things and, and Cara immediately calls him out for
spk_0
being dramatic.
spk_0
But the problem is they don't have med pack.
spk_0
So it does actually kind of look grim.
spk_0
And then then totals over.
spk_0
I'm sorry, um,
spk_0
Grogu, totals and places his little hand on griefs wound and uses the forest to heal him.
spk_0
Everyone grief, Cara, Quill and even the other hunters are just stunned.
spk_0
And it's the first time that they've seen what he can really do.
spk_0
And it completely changes the energy of the group and they kind of realize like,
spk_0
oh, I think we actually do need to protect him.
spk_0
Like he is maybe special here.
spk_0
Um, so the next day the group is back on the move when things suddenly turn.
spk_0
Griefs two remaining hunters pull weapons out and try to ambush,
spk_0
den and Cara.
spk_0
But before they can do anything,
spk_0
grief spins around and blast them both.
spk_0
And he comes clean right there.
spk_0
The original plan was to kill den and Cara and take the kid.
spk_0
But after the kid saved his life the night before, he says he just couldn't go through with it.
spk_0
So like he didn't tell the other two guys of like,
spk_0
let's not do this.
spk_0
Instead he just killed.
spk_0
I mean, if that's your, I think the nature of their relationship, that's,
spk_0
that's all that was needed.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
And then he grief admits the truth.
spk_0
The client is obsessed with Grogu.
spk_0
And if grief dies, that obsession won't stop.
spk_0
And Cara's ready to call him a liar on the spot,
spk_0
but Quill steps in and convinces her and then don't least hear him out.
spk_0
And grief says that they all have the same goal now.
spk_0
Get rid of the client.
spk_0
Like that's our goal.
spk_0
Like it's, it's good for you and it's good for me.
spk_0
So let's do it.
spk_0
Right.
spk_0
So that's like, yeah, good grief doesn't have any hunters because they're all on,
spk_0
they're all after Grogu, right?
spk_0
Like exactly.
spk_0
The reward is so good.
spk_0
He can't get any of his hunters to take any other jobs.
spk_0
You know, Cara gets to kill Imperials.
spk_0
That's, you know, that's what's in it for her.
spk_0
And then Den and Grogu are stopped.
spk_0
The, the, the rule was pursuit stops.
spk_0
So, right.
spk_0
So I love for everybody.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
It makes sense.
spk_0
Yeah, it does.
spk_0
So that's when Den suggests that the wildest part of the plan.
spk_0
Yeah, he actually will turn himself in so he can get close enough to kill the client.
spk_0
And Cara thinks he's out of his mind, but Den insists that's the only way that this is going to work.
spk_0
So they refine the plan.
spk_0
They'll use Grogu's pram as a decoy, but the real Grogu,
spk_0
child is being sent back to the Razorcrest with Quill.
spk_0
Cara will go with the Mandalorian and the decoy to keep up the ruse.
spk_0
But before they split, Den tells Quill to activate the ship's ground security protocols.
spk_0
The second he gets inside and Quill ever steady promises he'll protect Grogu no matter what.
spk_0
And he reminds Cara to cover her rebel stripes before they head into town.
spk_0
So Quill takes Grogu back to the Razorcrest on the last remaining blurg while
spk_0
Den tied up and the decoy pram are escorted into town by grief and car Cara.
spk_0
Right at the gate, they run into the two scout troopers.
spk_0
One of them being Jason Sadekis, which is really fun.
spk_0
And the other one is Adam Pally.
spk_0
They're really fun.
spk_0
They become the most hateable characters in Star Wars in the next episode.
spk_0
They do.
spk_0
And I kind of wish that they were kind of like tagging
spk_0
Bink where they just kind of keep showing up throughout the Mandalorian.
spk_0
Like I would have loved that of like this kind of running bit.
spk_0
Yeah, like they get reassigned to the place that they break in for the believer in the next season.
spk_0
And yeah, that'd be great.
spk_0
And then they're assigned on Mandalore.
spk_0
Like we got this new cool.
spk_0
We're on Gideon's new new ship or whatever.
spk_0
Yeah, yeah, just like I just think that'd be funny.
spk_0
They just keep showing up.
spk_0
It'd be a good bit.
spk_0
But yeah, so the troopers demand a chain code and grief hands them over like a pro.
spk_0
And from there, it's just clear the town is crawling with stormtroopers.
spk_0
It is not just for like he said.
spk_0
No.
spk_0
Yeah, so grief explains that the Imperials ramped up their presence after
spk_0
Din blew up their safe house.
spk_0
So things are already tense here.
spk_0
And so the trio heads into a canteenah where they finally meet the client
spk_0
who's flanked by a four-string trooper party guards inside.
spk_0
There's the four.
spk_0
May I offer you a libation to celebrate the conclusion of our shared narrative?
spk_0
Mac literally says that to me every time we finish a podcast.
spk_0
Yeah, I offer him a sparkling water and I say that.
spk_0
Man, I can't wait till Star Wars celebration, dude.
spk_0
Yeah, we're gonna have so much fun.
spk_0
I'm gonna offer everyone a libation.
spk_0
As we do karaoke.
spk_0
All right, so grief announces that he and Cara have brought the Mandalorian and Grogu.
spk_0
The client immediately zeroes in on Mando's best guard armor and
spk_0
always a point of interest with him.
spk_0
And in a small touch of Imperial Pomp, the client has an RA7 protocol droids serve,
spk_0
grief, a drink for closing the deal, as you said before.
spk_0
And then he starts this spiel about the benefits of Imperial rule,
spk_0
talking up safety, prosperity, and trade, and contrasting it with proposed chaos left by the
spk_0
revolution. Just classic Imperial fascist propaganda stuff, you know?
spk_0
Yeah, just from the from the playbook.
spk_0
Just textbook Imperial stuff.
spk_0
Yeah, and so the client asked to see the child.
spk_0
You know, you want to you want to do that one?
spk_0
I'd like to see the baby.
spk_0
Grogu says that he's asleep and the client insists that he'll be quiet,
spk_0
which I love.
spk_0
And he's like, I'll be really quiet.
spk_0
I just want to be very quiet.
spk_0
And then it's like it's half, it's half like he suspects something
spk_0
is up and he's pushing.
spk_0
And it's also half like earnestly like, oh, no, don't worry.
spk_0
I won't wake him.
spk_0
I just want to see him.
spk_0
Never wake him.
spk_0
I think we're like, he just the client genuinely likes Grogu.
spk_0
I don't think he really has any like as a in a possession way.
spk_0
Not like he doesn't love and care for Grogu, but he, uh,
spk_0
I don't think he cares about any of the cloning stuff.
spk_0
I think he just wants to have the cuteness for himself.
spk_0
Absolutely.
spk_0
For a while, until he kills him.
spk_0
And then out of nowhere, a storm trooper sets up a hollow projector
spk_0
for an urgent call from Moff Gideon.
spk_0
While this is happening, Dinsettily gets grief to unbind his restraints
spk_0
and hand him a blaster, a classic stealth.
spk_0
And then Cara immediately realizes their odds are not great.
spk_0
And then chaos erupts.
spk_0
Death troopers open fire from outside, killing the client
spk_0
and his storm troopers.
spk_0
While Dins, Cara and grief scramble for cover behind a table.
spk_0
And even the droid gets caught in the crossfire.
spk_0
So I think our initial speculation on the client earlier in our rewatch was right.
spk_0
Like I think the client was like making moves against Moff Gideon.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Trying to do his own thing and like maybe even steal his plan
spk_0
and Moff Gideon got wise to it and just took him out.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
He's, he's at least completely disposable to Gideon.
spk_0
If not, you know, an active threat that needs to be disposed of.
spk_0
Like this could be a, you know, two birds, one stone situation for Gideon.
spk_0
Yes.
spk_0
Absolutely.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
So it doesn't end there.
spk_0
The Cantino students surrounded by a line of death troopers.
spk_0
This is the scariest that they've ever been
spk_0
because they've actually killed somebody.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
We've never, we've never seen it before.
spk_0
They've never managed to actually defeat anyone in combat.
spk_0
They're worse than just storm troopers.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
They're supposed to be the elite of the elite.
spk_0
And they're, I'm like, I'd rather see death troopers coming at me.
spk_0
Thank God.
spk_0
I did it.
spk_0
It's like great.
spk_0
It's gonna be easy.
spk_0
We got this.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
But then an Imperial troop transport drops off
spk_0
fresh contingent of storm troopers and caraces.
spk_0
The numbers and realizes that they're seriously outmatched.
spk_0
Dinn tries to warn Quill over the comlink, telling him to flee.
spk_0
But the signal is intercepted by scout troopers
spk_0
who give chase on their speeder bikes.
spk_0
Then Mofgitian makes his grand entrance,
spk_0
swooping in on an outland tie fighter
spk_0
with retractable solar collectors.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
And this concept actually came from the Force Awakens
spk_0
and they didn't use it.
spk_0
And so they used it here.
spk_0
Like his tie fighter is just.
spk_0
It's, it's pretty cool.
spk_0
I mean, it would make total sense.
spk_0
It's like the F14 of tie fighters.
spk_0
Like I bet it could be stored on a ship in a much more.
spk_0
You know, succinct manner like like compact.
spk_0
Like I could see that you could just, if they all,
spk_0
if they had like a stack of these tie fighters,
spk_0
you could just fit them into little slots
spk_0
like the old CD storage towers.
spk_0
You know what I'm talking about?
spk_0
I know you're dumb up.
spk_0
So yeah.
spk_0
I like that.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
So he steps out of the scene.
spk_0
It's like straight up from a war movie too.
spk_0
Like he's got a good entrance.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Oh, he, he knows what he's doing.
spk_0
Like he's thinking about how he looks
spk_0
when he's doing anything.
spk_0
Because it's, yeah, for sure.
spk_0
The, as the kids would say,
spk_0
the aura farming is out of hand.
spk_0
They, they kids would say that.
spk_0
Not the kids from Winchery Hill though.
spk_0
They wouldn't say that.
spk_0
Um,
spk_0
I don't want to be anything other than what
spk_0
trying to really
spk_0
be sorry for busting everybody's the air drums there.
spk_0
Hey, let's talk about.
spk_0
I'm so sorry.
spk_0
Let's talk about Imperial warlords.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
How does this work?
spk_0
Is it like fiefdoms like where like you're just kind of strong enough
spk_0
to take over your little section?
spk_0
Are they working together?
spk_0
Is this a coordinated effort?
spk_0
We know in season three of the shadow council
spk_0
where they're all kind of talking with each other.
spk_0
But it seems kind of almost like a medieval thing going on here.
spk_0
Fudal.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
The futile system is kind of what I equate this to.
spk_0
It's, it's like, you know,
spk_0
shoguns having their little territories where
spk_0
they govern it and enforce their rule
spk_0
through their military might.
spk_0
It's like all these
spk_0
imperials who just had enough people loyal to them
spk_0
personally after the collapse of the empire
spk_0
to continue you're kind of carving out their own little
spk_0
their own little thing.
spk_0
I think there's no rules for how
spk_0
these, you know, different different warlords have to like work together or not.
spk_0
I don't like I think it's the Wild West in terms of that.
spk_0
Like we know that there is the shadow council.
spk_0
Some people who are at least trying to keep a coordinated,
spk_0
you know, large scale effort going.
spk_0
But I like,
spk_0
Gideon seems to me like he's decided that he's the emperor.
spk_0
Yeah, he feels that way.
spk_0
And he's just doing that, you know,
spk_0
I actually think he's probably pretty directly
spk_0
working for the emperor in all of this
spk_0
through all the cloning stuff.
spk_0
Okay, so here's what I'm glad you said that.
spk_0
My take on it is is that he found
spk_0
stuff in Mount Tantus being an ISB agent.
spk_0
He had access to things or maybe gained access to things.
spk_0
And once the collapse happened, he's like,
spk_0
I always wanted to check out and see what was in here.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
And learned of some of the things that the emperor was doing.
spk_0
And unwittingly became kind of like
spk_0
a guinea pig for what Palpatine wants to do anyway.
spk_0
Because you're right.
spk_0
It almost seems like he's doing his own thing.
spk_0
Like he wants to set up his own dynasty.
spk_0
He's making clons of himself that can use the force.
spk_0
Like he seems like he's really trying to make a run of it for himself.
spk_0
Like I don't think he's reporting to
spk_0
now he could be being manipulated by Palpatine's forces
spk_0
or like even some of those droids.
spk_0
Yeah, the ones with Palpatine's face that have all of his,
spk_0
they're like his will and testament droids.
spk_0
They like carry out his orders that were
spk_0
that laid for them upon his death kind of deal.
spk_0
spk_0
Yeah, I don't know.
spk_0
I'd like some more answers on that.
spk_0
But I think mostly he seems to be operating on his own.
spk_0
And he would be kind of the highest power in this region of the galaxy.
spk_0
You know, not on paper, but in terms of might.
spk_0
Yeah, it totally feels that way.
spk_0
And he tells Dan in the crew that there are,
spk_0
they have something he wants and they have no idea how valuable it is, of course,
spk_0
it being Grogu.
spk_0
Meanwhile, the scout troopers close in on Quill and the Razorcrest.
spk_0
And Gideon declares that the child will be his in just a few moments.
spk_0
Quill lowers the ramp and on the Razorcrest.
spk_0
But it's too late.
spk_0
The scout troopers have already shot him dead.
spk_0
And in one devastating moment, a scout trooper scoops up,
spk_0
Grogu, everything just pivots here and the stakes couldn't be higher.
spk_0
And we just kind of linger on Quill's dead body as the episode close out.
spk_0
And that's where we leave things hanging until next week.
spk_0
And when we were watching it through the first time, we were like,
spk_0
is is he gone?
spk_0
Is he going to pull through?
spk_0
And you'll have to listen to our breakdown.
spk_0
Because there's no other way to know.
spk_0
I just so like obviously he wants Grogu because he knows how powerful and the force Grogu is.
spk_0
How does he know that?
spk_0
Like, I know that Pershing was doing the MCount stuff in like chapter three.
spk_0
But like somebody knew that Grogu was super important because of where he was at.
spk_0
Like, it seemed like the criminal underworld was selling him off to the empire,
spk_0
which I think the movie is going to address.
spk_0
I think the movie is going to kind of because if we're dealing with the the huts and the criminal
spk_0
underworld, like we know now from the teaser, I think it has to be they knew something about Grogu.
spk_0
Like they somehow got a hold of Grogu and we're willing to sell him off to the empire.
spk_0
Yeah, I mean, that that makes sense, but we're just missing some pieces.
spk_0
We're getting some pieces.
