Welcome back for another helping of oysters, clams, and chicken coops presented by
spk_0
Bowling Media. I'm Ross Bowling here with Barrett Dudley to discuss and review episode 5 of
spk_0
TASK on HBO Barrett. How are you feeling about TASK?
spk_0
Oh, I'm tasked up, baby. You know? I'm ready to run through these woods and find a nice
spk_0
woman oasis at the end of a trail about one loud down. It's also just it's a great day for our
spk_0
characters on the show and for listeners of the podcast. Because over on Patreon, you know,
spk_0
we were chastised a bit for not being too familiar with Outlaw Country artist Steve Earl,
spk_0
who has a role in season one of The Wire. He's famous for
spk_0
the song Copperhead Road. And then here we go, TASK Episode 5, as it turns out,
spk_0
our man Robbie, he just keeps it locked to Channel 60 on Sirius XM Radio Outlaw Country.
spk_0
Now, he Robbie is a guy that would know Steve Earl, so no doubt. While we're not super familiar
spk_0
with him, I was happy to see that I dude, you know, that can barely make ends meet and definitely
spk_0
doesn't have any trackers on his car, is able to pay that $12.99 a month for Sirius XM. So,
spk_0
he can get his Steve Earl fix. That was huge. Yeah. You're a serious guy, historically.
spk_0
I am, yeah, yeah. I'm most serious with an eye. That's right. That's right. Yeah, Sirius XM.
spk_0
Still a real goofball, but Sirius with an eye. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. I've been known to
spk_0
listen to a little Sirius XM Radio. Yeah, I've been in there with you. Yeah, yeah. I've been in
spk_0
there with you. I mostly keep it popping on some Spotify and some podcasts or some music or whatever,
spk_0
but I do. You have the option. I have the option to switch over to Channel 60 Out. Well,
spk_0
Country, if I want to. I think it was the first Boomer Barrett trait. I noticed you think Sirius
spk_0
XM is a Boomer trait? Oh, yeah. Yeah. I think you're the only person I know, or the only,
spk_0
you know, young person's car I've ever been in where I experienced that. It was probably like 15
spk_0
years ago. I remember getting in your car to go somewhere and I was like, are you listening to
spk_0
Colin Coward on Sirius XM right now, dude? Yeah. Yeah. Hashtag Boomer Barrett. Yeah. Yeah.
spk_0

spk_0
today episode five of task is titled vagrants. And it opens with a flashback to Robbie and his
spk_0
brother Billy doing their heart explosion avoiding water ritual. Yeah, yeah, because everybody knows
spk_0
that if you jump into very cold water without prepping your heart could explode from the shack.
spk_0
I don't and they're really just there's one thing you come away from this show with.
spk_0
It's that you could never it just at worth the point now where I was like that's not true though,
spk_0
right? Your heart doesn't explode. No, just it just explodes. It explodes from the shock.
spk_0
Like when everybody went into the ocean from the Titanic, there weren't just hearts exploding left
spk_0
and right. Now there were. There were just slowly froze to death, right? I don't know, I'm scared
spk_0
of heart explosion. So I'm going to have to start doing this before I go swimming the pool if it
spk_0
feels even a little bit chilly. You know, but your body gets used to the temperature and your heart
spk_0
slows so it don't explode. Yeah, bear it. Then we flash forward to Robbie waking up from a dream
spk_0
about cliff and him swimming in the quarry after their successful robbery. Robbie exits his car
spk_0
busts into cliffs buddy, Ray's house, Ray who tried to rip them off and finds Ray's girl named
spk_0
Shelley there. So Shelley, let's Robbie know that the FBI took Ray two days ago. So it was not Ray
spk_0
who texted Cliff for the meetup last night and Robbie's head is just spinning. This guy is confused.
spk_0
Yeah. He's got no clue what's going on or where anybody is. Shelley asks Robbie if he still has
spk_0
the fentanyl and tells Robbie that this is her last chance to escape Ray's wrath because he might
spk_0
make bail. Yeah, he's got a meeting with his parole officer in a few days or something. So she's
spk_0
willing to help Robbie move the drugs says she could introduce him to Lee Whitehead, which is the
spk_0
guy that they were allegedly getting set up with the first time around. So Robbie is like why the
spk_0
hell would I trust you ends up leaving you feel sad for Shelley? Because I'm a good person.
spk_0
Because I'm a good person. Yeah, what he does not bite on this offer. No, do you think she was
spk_0
full of shit again? Do you think she was? No, she seemed genuine to me. Yeah, he should have gone
spk_0
with this route. He should have gone to Lee Whitehead, right? I thought he was going to go this
spk_0
route. Yeah, I don't really understand why he goes the Freddie route. Yeah, but we'll get to that.
spk_0
The task force has the dude who Robbie beat the shit out of at the truck stop. I think his name's
spk_0
Alex down at the station to be interviewed. They're bringing in a sketch artist to have this man
spk_0
describe Robbie who assaulted him. And the task force is also going to go try to talk to Bartos.
spk_0
The dude Robbie we're going to have drive him across the border in a car.
spk_0
Bartos turns into like a jeez. Yeah, sound with the S and Z, right? Yeah, yeah.
spk_0
Hey, we called it a bullshit. Let me ask you. Let me ask you, son, Barry. We bring in a professional
spk_0
police grade sketch artist right now. Yeah. And you got to describe me to this cat. Yeah.
spk_0
You think you could get him to draw an accurate sketch of me of my face? No. I don't feel like I
spk_0
could do it for anybody. You know what I mean? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Well, how do you even go about
spk_0
describe it like shape of a face? I'm glad you brought this up because all the sketch artist stuff
spk_0
in this episode, for me, it just brought like how do you even become a sketch artist? How do you
spk_0
think? How do you determine that this is a skill that you have? You're like, hey, people can
spk_0
can describe a face that you've never seen. You have never seen this face. Yeah. And I can do a
spk_0
pretty good representation of it. I can sketch it out and I'm usually pretty close. That's
spk_0
this is a wild skill set. Yeah. I thought about that the bulk majority of the episode. I'm not
spk_0
going to lie to you. I was just like, man, fascinated by this sketch artist. I mean, and we've
spk_0
seen this like, I've seen a sketch artist in movies and TV a million times. Yeah. Like, I don't
spk_0
know. For some reason, I had the same thing where I was just like thinking about the sketch artist
spk_0
and the sketch artist tree. I mean, the picture, the picture this guy comes up with is if Robbie was
spk_0
sitting next to him at the table and he was drawing a portrait. No, I actually thought it was a good
spk_0
like just like, yeah, that's Robbie. Close enough. But not too, too accurate. Yeah. I don't know,
spk_0
though. That was, I was, I was wildly impressed. And I just don't think I could, I don't think I
spk_0
could do it like describing you or my wife or my parents. I'm like, I don't know what details.
spk_0
I think what happens, I feel like what happens is they're like, I don't think I'm curious.
spk_0
I'm very curious. You don't think it's one take. I don't think it's one take. I think they
spk_0
kind of like show you there. Okay. How's this? What about this? Yeah. What about this? And then
spk_0
you're like, no, no, no, no, no. Nose is a little bit wider and stronger jawline. Yeah. Yeah.
spk_0
You're slightly smaller. Yeah. I slightly closer together. That's how I think like I feel like
spk_0
you're kind of like working a little bit. Like maybe they do a, they do a first draft. Right.
spk_0
And then they, and then you say, no, no, no, no, and you like fix some things and they pull
spk_0
the piece of paper and they crumple off and they, they, they cobiate in the trash can. Yeah. Okay.
spk_0
It's got to be something like that. The guy says I think it like takes 30, 40 minutes or something.
spk_0
Yeah. Yeah. I was just blown away. Shout out to all the sketch artists out there because you think
spk_0
we got any sketch artists listen to the show right now? Oh no. If you're a sketch artist and
spk_0
you're out there in the audience. Yeah. Yeah. Or if you've ever done this, if you've ever given the,
spk_0
like if you've ever been the, not the sketchy, but the subscriber, yeah.
spk_0
Been on that side of the ball. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Well, anyway, some dude comes into Kathie's office.
spk_0
Big scene here. Little scene kind of gets swept under the rug. Oh no. I didn't sweep it under the
spk_0
rug Ross. No, sorry. Don't sweep. Yeah. Oh, Kath, who we all assumed was the rat. Yeah. After last
spk_0
week. Yeah. We went hard on that. And, and, and this dude who comes into our office who we've never
spk_0
met before, she gives him a little shit for not being like summer casual. He's in a full suit. Yeah.
spk_0
And he says he did some more digging on the task force members. She asked him about. So clearly,
spk_0
when Kath picked up the phone last week and said we might have a problem. This is who she was talking to.
spk_0
She was not ratting. She was not the rat. She was not the rat. Too easy. Too easy. We did, um,
spk_0
we did comment on how her being the rat was almost like too easy. And there might be another rat.
spk_0
Yes. We were still be gross. So we were we were buying her as the rat. We did. We went to bat for
spk_0
Grasso. Although we did. We we backtracked a little bit on Patreon. And said, and said that it could
spk_0
still be Grasso as well. Yeah. We did. We did. Um, yeah. After the service, so it ended,
spk_0
my wife looked over and she goes, you and Ross really were wrong about a lot of stuff, huh?
spk_0
Put a lot of joy in her heart. Yeah, I did. I think it did.
spk_0
Haters, man. Sometimes they're your closest people.
spk_0
Yeah. So, um, but yeah, this is who she made the call to. This guy is serious with an E.
spk_0
You know, he's he's not wearing jeans on a Friday. No. Uh, but yeah, notable scene. It's
spk_0
going to come back. It's good. This one's going to come back into play for sure. Yeah. He asks
spk_0
if she has a minute to chat and then we cut away from that. So we don't get to be privy to that
spk_0
conversation. Put a pen in it. Um, so just to be clear, we don't think Kath is a rat at all now.
spk_0
We're we're completely out on Kath. There's a right. Okay. Yeah. Kath not a rat. So the beauty of
spk_0
this is that they give us all these arrows pointing to Grasso. Yes. So many that you and I are like,
spk_0
well, it can't be him. This is very obvious. Yes. Then they give you a few arrows pointing to
spk_0
Kath and you're like, there it is. Okay. It's her. Yeah. Grasso was the distraction. Yep. And then
spk_0
they come back full circle. It was nicely done. Yeah. It was nicely done. Yeah. I appreciate the way
spk_0
this was written. Uh, so Miguel, the sketch artist shows up to do the sketch with the witness Alex.
spk_0
Alia tells Tom they got DNA off the bucket. Sam was carrying when he freed that fish out of the
spk_0
truck stop. Mm hmm. And it's the DNA of 21 year old woman. Mave printer grast. Her father is
spk_0
Billy printer grast. Lieutenant within the dark arts missing persons report was filed 14 months ago
spk_0
on Billy. Tom is going to go pay Mave a visit by himself. Why? I don't know. Uh, Perry drops Jason
spk_0
back at his house after they presumably buried Cliff's body somewhere because they got shovels.
spk_0
They're putting the shovels back in the garage. And Perry sticks a tracking device on one of the
spk_0
cars. Now I initially thought he was sticking a tracking device on Jason's car. No, I, I, I, I felt
spk_0
I knew what he was doing here, but it's Aaron's car. Aaron's car that he's putting a tracker on.
spk_0
Jason has blood on his tank top, which Aaron sees when he enters the home. Mave is still taking care
spk_0
of this six year old kid. Sam. She's going to drop him off at the station today, but he asked to pet
spk_0
the chicken. Gerdy one last time. So when Sam is outside petting Gerdy, income's Perry to Mave's house,
spk_0
which if you watched the like next time on task trailer, you knew this was coming. Mave plays
spk_0
it pretty cool with Perry. She's, she's good under pressure this one. Doesn't really give any
spk_0
inkling or that there could be something wrong. Um, Perry is there under the guise of needing some
spk_0
of Mave's dads, Billy's stuff for some sort of memorial. He says they're going to do. Uh, Perry
spk_0
ends up seeing a photo of Robbie and Cliff on the refrigerator, which is very problematic. And frankly,
spk_0
somebody probably should have taken that down at some point in the last several days that have passed.
spk_0
Mave had Sam in the chicken coop while Perry is there. It's tense, but I was pretty confident.
spk_0
Sam and Mave, we're going to be okay here. Yeah. Yeah. Um, quick question on the, uh, on the fridge
spk_0
stitch. How many photos of you and, uh, and the fellas you got on your fridge? Me and the boys.
spk_0
Yeah. Um, maybe you and your best boy. I don't know. None zero. Yeah. Yeah. Not really a thing.
spk_0
No, it's not. No, because I'm a grown man. Cause you're a grown man. And you're not just taking
spk_0
photos with your besties, but they were like brothers at 40 years old, you know? Yeah. No, I get it.
spk_0
But like, but I don't know. That didn't throw me that much. Robbie doesn't have much going
spk_0
honestly. It didn't throw me either. It's just funny and, you know, and, and if you're not listening
spk_0
over on Patreon, then, then you're not getting a lot of the, this kind of bonus coverage where we
spk_0
go deeper into this type of stuff. But like the scrapbooking that the dark hearts are clearly doing.
spk_0
Yeah. Yeah. Because Perry can just sit there and flip through photos and photos and photos.
spk_0
Yeah. Like all their meetups. Yeah. It's kind of echoed here again with like, Robby and Cliff,
spk_0
just, you know, these people be, hey, Mave, grab a photo of me and my bro. It almost looks like a
spk_0
selfie too. It's like close up. It's the one for the fridge. Yeah. I just continuing the, the idea of
spk_0
like these guys just, you know, they're, they're different than you and me because they like to take
spk_0
photos with with each other. And there's nothing wrong with that. Okay. No, there's nothing wrong with
spk_0
that. It's manly. It's very manly. We also talked off Mike about how it seems like the, the
spk_0
biker chicks, the chicks in the dark hearts, the dark heart ladies, probably their responsibility to
spk_0
do the scrapbooking. Yeah. Right. Right. Yeah. Because it's Perry's girl who's got all the scrapbooks.
spk_0
It's not Perry himself. Okay. She's the scrapbooker. Yeah. You know, the, the, the club historian. Exactly.
spk_0
Yeah. And in the case of Robbie, girl, wife, baby mama, ditched brother, dead, saying nothing about
spk_0
other family, parents don't know. Clips kind of. Yeah. That's all he's got. Right. And that's his fam.
spk_0
His best boy is number one guy. Yeah. Yeah. So it is what it is. So then Mave goes and meets up with
spk_0
her friend from work and asks this girl to take care of Robbie's two kids Harper and Wyatt,
spk_0
presumably because she knows she's going to be arrested. Yeah. I'm assuming when she takes
spk_0
in Sam, she knows she's going to be questioned at the very least. So now, just to further Robbie's
spk_0
father of the year award, he is no longer just pawning off the rearing of his children to his
spk_0
niece, Mave. Mave is pawning off those children to her coworker at the old roller skate and ring
spk_0
slash arcade, Chuckie cheese type shit that she works at. Yeah. He's poor goddamn kids, man.
spk_0
I have to do a whole other show about Robbie's kids and the hellacious life that they live.
spk_0
Robbie drives out to meet with his informant Aaron, Billy's former lover, Jason's current girl.
spk_0
Aaron has to tell Robbie that it was Jason who got Cliff last night that Jason had blood all over him
spk_0
in the morning. So Robbie has to come to terms with the fact that Cliff is very likely dead.
spk_0
And then it was not Ray. And then it was at Ray who he's just like fully confirming that this,
spk_0
his right theory is gone, not to make a pun, but dead in the water. Indeed. Wow. So so Robbie leaves to
spk_0
sell the dope. Aaron stays and watches a group of friends doing a little like a little, a little
spk_0
campfire on the other side of the quarry. She's like, oh, look at the good times being had over there.
spk_0
I'm going to just sit down and soak this in for a few minutes, even though this is a treacherous
spk_0
rendezvous point. It is. Yeah. I'm just going to take a seat. So unfortunately Perry had that
spk_0
tracker on Aaron's car and followed her out there. Perry sees Robbie driving away. Just in the
spk_0
just just sees him brutal brutal timing. He goes and approaches Aaron and tells her he knew she was
spk_0
lying to him. The long story short is that Aaron runs Perry pursues her down into the water and
spk_0
ends up drowning her killing her and then dragging the body away. RIP Aaron. Wait, this was a
spk_0
it was correct because he's like he's chasing her down there and he looks up and he sees the little
spk_0
campfire occurring too. And he's like, well, shit, we can't have any witnesses. So at one point,
spk_0
it looks like he's going to letter up out of the water when he's drowning her. But then he looks
spk_0
up and sees the smoke coming from the campfire. And he's like, better keep holding their under.
spk_0
Just in case they look this direction. Yeah. Yeah. Like did he want to kill her? Did he not want to
spk_0
doesn't mean to kill her? Right. But like also holds her in the water for like 10 minutes. So
spk_0
yeah, it's it's uh I had the same kind of like awkward or I don't know if that's the right word,
spk_0
but just kind of the same like what was his intention here? What was yeah, yeah, because I think
spk_0
a few things happen. One, she hits him in the head with the rock, which obviously like kind of
spk_0
enrages him, you know, and I think that gets him to another level where he is going to do murder.
spk_0
He's going to do the bad thing. Yeah. And then he's doing the thing, you know, we've seen this
spk_0
in other movies and films before too, right? Where he's just like, just shut up shut up. Yeah.
spk_0
And that like you're trying to get somebody to shut up leads to leads to their death leads to
spk_0
the murder instead of the shutting the shutting up. Well, it is that she did shut up just permanently.
spk_0
Which didn't seem like it was his original intention. Yes, I and I thought that was surprising
spk_0
because as soon as he says like, we're going to have to do this a different way now. I'm like,
spk_0
okay, he's going to kill her. But it's not that doesn't seem like that's what he meant though.
spk_0
But then that's not right because he's kind of having this mild freak out about her death about
spk_0
her death. And now he's going to deal with that body and he doesn't tell anyone about no, no,
spk_0
because Jason is not going to be happy about this. No, at all. The mother of his children. Yeah.
spk_0
So Perry's in a real pickle here. I agree. Yeah. But a bummer to see Aaron go that way.
spk_0
There was. There was. Yeah. So Robbie goes and tries to sell the fentanyl to Freddie Freys
spk_0
against Aaron's advice and you know, dismissing the other out that Shelley gave him at the front of
spk_0
the episode. Not sure what his thinking is here. Not sure we get that answer this episode period.
spk_0
It's all very death wishy. But he's got some kind of plan.
spk_0
Robbie does. Yeah. Yes. You know, based on what we've seen of this gentleman, it's probably not
spk_0
the strongest plan. But we can discuss that more at the end of the pot as well. So Freddie tells
spk_0
his underling to call Jason and the dark hearts and the underling is like, what are you going to
spk_0
ask for? Freddie says everything. And I was like, what the fuck does that mean? But I'm just happy
spk_0
he didn't say anything about cock. Yeah. Yeah. No cocks. No cocks mentioned Freddie here. We do not
spk_0
see the result of this meeting between Robbie and Freddie. We cut away. So Tom calls Grasso to ask
spk_0
him if he's had any luck tracking down Bartos. Bartos left for Canada, but the cops are on it.
spk_0
Tom tells Grasso to meet him at Maves address and then Grasso that rat bastard goes down under a
spk_0
bridge and meets with Jason. Grasso is the informant. Grasso. No. No. So yeah. There it was. Big moment.
spk_0
Jason gives Grasso the phone. Raise phone to put back in the evidence locker. Yep. So that's how
spk_0
yep. That'll switch a room happen there. Grasso is dismayed that the drugs weren't on Cliff.
spk_0
So it seems like there was an endgame here in this little partnership that has not occurred yet.
spk_0
Jason says that Sam is dead. That the kid is dead when he asks like, what about the six-year-old?
spk_0
You see in the six-year-old he's like, no, fuck that kid. He's dead. Grasso shows him a photo of
spk_0
Sam alive at the truck stop yesterday and has a quote. He says, I'm cutting things way too close
spk_0
this time, which makes you feel like Grasso has probably been helping these dark cards for quite a while.
spk_0
Jason then gets a call from Freddie that Robbie Printergast is the other thief. Freddie is going
spk_0
to set up a meeting and Robbie is going to bring the dope with him and Grasso says he has to go but
spk_0
tells Jason not to leave for that meeting until he hears from him. Right. So I'm going to ask you a
spk_0
question that I think you're going to know the answer to here. What is the motivation for Grasso?
spk_0
No, I don't know. Oh, you don't know. So you know how they do the inside the episode thing after
spk_0
the fact? You know how I'm not the biggest fan because sometimes there are things that are
spk_0
given away in those. So my wife loves them. So she watches them. I walk out of the room to brush my
spk_0
teeth. You know, I'm in the bathroom. I can't hear any of what's happening with the television.
spk_0
I come back out from the bathroom where I have just cleaned my teeth and I sit on my bed and
spk_0
it's like it's some point in that inside the episode thing and they're interviewing the gentleman
spk_0
who plays Grasso. What's his name? Fabian Frankl. Thank you. And he delivered a line or an explanation
spk_0
that provided depth to this situation that I again was not happy about hearing. I thought it was
spk_0
a nothingburger. Well, I'm just going to say if you don't want anything from the inside the episode,
spk_0
skip ahead about 30 seconds. Okay. Fabian Frankl says something like, yeah, so me and the actor who plays
spk_0
Jason and the showrunner talked and we basically came up with the backstory that these guys were
spk_0
likely childhood friends. And that they'd known each other for a really long time. Yeah. Which I just
spk_0
found to be kind of a bummer because now I know well, they're not going to give us that explanation
spk_0
on screen. That's not going to be part of the show. It's something that they came up with as
spk_0
characters on the side. It's not necessarily an important thing that we have to have in the show.
spk_0
I'm not saying it is. But I also just it's weird to me to get that because then you know that's not
spk_0
going to be a piece of the puzzle going forward. They're not going to explore Grasso's motivation
spk_0
or what it was that caused him to want to do this or whatever. Okay. So I had I had a yes, I know what
spk_0
you're saying. And I found that it's not that I didn't it's not that I was bummed about like
spk_0
learning trying to think about how to articulate this. I agree with you that it's a that it was
spk_0
weird to get this answer not in the TV show. But I actually still think that we're going to get it
spk_0
in the TV show. Oh, you do. Because of the cat running down like maybe re-vading everybody with
spk_0
the guy that she called who steps into her office. Right. Who we think is inevitably going to have
spk_0
some information or cat maybe already has some information about Grasso that is going to clue her
spk_0
into which one of these people on the task force is a mole. So I do think that there is going to be
spk_0
some sort of reveal or explanation about how she knows or how how somebody figures out her
spk_0
knows that Grasso is the mole. That's that's that's worse. So that's worse than what I had a
spk_0
couple of other kind of reactions to this one. I just thought it was weird that the way that Fabian
spk_0
Frankle made it sound is that he and the actor playing Jason are the ones that came up with this.
spk_0
It's exactly what he said. Yeah. And so that made me just think about how like
spk_0
all right, I like this show. So I first I just want to preface by saying I really like the show
spk_0
very very strong chance it ends up on my top 10 at the end of the year. Great characters, great
spk_0
acting, great place, great, you know, vibe overall. I kind of think this should have been a movie.
spk_0
Oh yeah? Yeah. Well, I won't give you that. Well, it's obviously largely inspired by a movie
spk_0
like Heat and others of its ilk. And I just feel like two-hander thrillers, guys on a collision
spk_0
course works better when it all just kind of like happens in rap in rapid succession. And I feel
spk_0
like maybe we're like, you know, on Patreon, we kind of investigated a few of the plot holes that
spk_0
have been called out about this like like within this show in general. And this episode, for example,
spk_0
did not do the obvious thing. They're on this hunt trying to figure out who Robbie is when they
spk_0
could have just looked into the Cliff's workplace and seen who Cliff worked with every single day.
spk_0
And they would have had this guy's name 72 hours ago. You know what I mean? Like, like, right.
spk_0
And so it's like we're given time to think about the missteps that the show is not including.
spk_0
And at the same time, the show is jumping to some stuff. It's just kind of offering up the
spk_0
Grasso Reveal with no backstory or no explanation. And I just kind of got this sense that like, okay,
spk_0
in a two and a half hour movie or a two hour movie, when everything is just kind of like when
spk_0
this piece of the story is moving at a breakneck pace, then you just kind of like this Grasso
spk_0
Reveal the meeting under the tunnel kind of happens as this like, you know, propulsive thing that
spk_0
keeps the story churning and like, it's just weird that we keep having to wait now for other
spk_0
shoes to drop. And then when we get to the end of this episode, I was just thinking about how like,
spk_0
it's almost a letdown to get right to the precipice of what's going to be this like three way
spk_0
standoff rate or four way standoff, I don't know. And then have to leave, you know, it's like we've
spk_0
built all this momentum and then we're not actually going to get the climax. So on that note,
spk_0
probably 20 to 30 minutes left in the episode. And I just something about the way it was paced.
spk_0
I was like, oh, they're going to cliffhanger the living shit out of us. Yeah. And I didn't expect to get
spk_0
the big showdown in this episode. Well, no, I mean, of course, not especially with two left,
spk_0
but, but I could just tell they were going to walk us up to the line. Yeah. And then roll the credits
spk_0
for some reason with like 20 or 30 minutes left. I was just like, oh, these fuckers. So again,
spk_0
it's been, it's been a great show. And episode and doing this as a short series as a seven episode
spk_0
series gives us more time to like get to know people like Maeve and like Cliff and, and all these kind
spk_0
of like tertiary characters that that we get to spend a little bit more time with. But I also think
spk_0
that the that the length of the show is also kind of leading us to get these weird these weird
spk_0
moments where we're discovering plot holes, questioning characters, motivations or decision-making,
spk_0
and then also having like a reveal that that feels a little bit sudden or is lacking in explanation.
spk_0
All of that to say I generally like agree with your sentiment that it was just weird to get that
spk_0
explanation that apparently the actors came up with not even the showrunner. They like cleared it
spk_0
with him, which is the reason I don't foresee it being explained in the show. Maybe not.
spk_0
So, but I think that but I think that will be weird if they don't explain it. Yeah, I don't know
spk_0
about it being a movie just because you've got seven hours plus to flush this out here,
spk_0
whereas a movie you got what like two and a half. It is interesting that in the comps for me,
spk_0
this is like if the departed meets true detective. That's sort of the vibe this show gives me. And
spk_0
it's interesting that in like the departed, the the movie literally starts with 20, 30 minutes of
spk_0
them explaining here's how these two rats come to be right in each camp. Yeah, you you follow Matt
spk_0
Damon and you follow Leonardo DiCaprio into their respective rat roles. So there's never any question
spk_0
about who the main two rats are anyway. Of course, there are other rats rats everywhere. But yeah,
spk_0
I still I like the way this unfolded. I like the way they did the double head fake thing with
spk_0
Grasso to get you thinking it's cat and then pull it back to Grasso here. I just thought it was
spk_0
interesting that they give us this bit of what is no doubt a cool behind the scenes note that these
spk_0
two actors came up with like well, he didn't give us the depth of our relationship. So we invented it
spk_0
on our own. But I would like to hear something like that after the finale, not in the middle of
spk_0
the season. Because then it tips me off to what's coming down the pipeline in in the couple episodes
spk_0
we have remaining. So or what's not rather. Yeah. Yeah. So that that's the only reason it bothered me.
spk_0
And I just thought it was funny that even though I literally tried to win out of my way to avoid this
spk_0
this week, I walked in at the one line that I'm aware of anyway, that ended up sort of being
spk_0
spoilery. Yeah. It's just like, ah, this is why I'm out on these. Damn it. The internet can be a
spk_0
wonderful thing. Without it, of course, you wouldn't have access to our ever entertaining podcast.

spk_0
and the station where we learn that Alia Clinton does not have a sense of smell since being assaulted
spk_0
by her ex boyfriend. And also she still calls her ex's parole officer monthly to make sure he's
spk_0
where he's supposed to be, not assaulting other women. Sketch artist calls Alia in and shows her
spk_0
the completed picture. Robbie gets back to his house. Everyone is gone. Maeve, his kids, Sam,
spk_0
nobody home. He calls Maeve straight to voicemail. Tom rolls up to Robbie's house just as he gets a call
spk_0
from Grasso telling him he's on the way and to not go in approach until he gets there. But Robbie
spk_0
comes out of the house and Tom tells Grasso like I think this is our guy. Basically ignores Grasso's
spk_0
warnings and just tells him to get there as soon as he can. So Tom approaches Robbie introduces himself
spk_0
a special agent. Tom Brandis FBI. Tom asks if Maeve Pindergrast is home makes up a lie about
spk_0
investigating a cold case of her father Billy Pindergrast. Robbie says he has to get to work. Tom asks
spk_0
if he can use the bathroom. It's just like this hole back and forth right Tom fakes like he has
spk_0
some bladder issue. Tries to eat as much time as possible like pouring a Pepsi in the toilet sporadically.
spk_0
I love Robbie's line about and nobody pisses like that. Yeah, that was good. Dude there, honestly,
spk_0
you could this this was a really cool payoff here. Just all of these scenes between Tom and
spk_0
Robbie. I mean, this is why they show their chemistry. Yeah, yeah. It's phenomenal. Yeah, these two
spk_0
characters and that was a lot of build up to get to the point where these guys are actually in the
spk_0
same place. That was that was a cool note in the behind the episode that you probably missed which
spk_0
was the note about and I think I had read this elsewhere too. But Tom Pelfry basically like
spk_0
wanted to stay with as far away from Mark Ruffalo on set for the entire time as he could because he
spk_0
wanted that he wanted when they met on the show to feel like a meeting to feel as organic as possible
spk_0
and as natural as possible like these two guys adjustment. Oh, I love that. And so that was yeah.
spk_0
It's like it's not method but it's strategic. Yeah. Yeah. Tom gets a text from Grasso that he's
spk_0
five minutes away. He comes out and sits down on Robbie's couch asks Robbie if he has any
spk_0
abilly stuff like a hairbrush or a winter hat Mark Ruffalo doing old guy. Yeah, doing decrepit old
spk_0
guy was also really good. Yes. It's crazy that he's so good at that and then is also the Hulk. Yeah.
spk_0
So oh and also this is the second time in the episode that people come to this house looking for
spk_0
Billy's shit. Oh yeah. Yeah. Fake looking for Billy's shit. That's right. Robbie sneaks up behind
spk_0
Tom. Hold him at gunpoint. Take some hostage. Right. He doesn't buy it. He figures out. Sus is out.
spk_0
What's going on here? Forces Tom into his car tells him to head north on route 100. They
spk_0
build like a nice camaraderie in the car on the way to wherever Robbie is taking them. I think it
spk_0
ends up being Uncle Baby Billy's hunting cabin out there in the woods. That's where they're headed.
spk_0
Okay. Is this Billy's cabin or is it Jason's cabin? Billy's cabin. That Jason was aware of.
spk_0
Okay. That makes sense. That makes more sense. Yeah. I was thinking that this was Jason's cabin.
spk_0
That'd be a really dumb idea. That Robbie knew about and I was like why would he go what?
spk_0
Isn't this the cabin that Billy died at? It is, right? This is where they they I don't think this is
spk_0
the same place that they took Billy and beat him to death, but I could be wrong. That might be
spk_0
the place. I was very confused about how they were going to like get this location to Robbie and
spk_0
kind of act like it was a Freddie location. This makes way more sense. So Robbie came up with the
spk_0
location. Yeah. Okay. That makes way more sense. He told them this is where I'll meet you. Yeah.
spk_0
Okay. Okay. Um, Robbie tells Tom to turn on the serious satellite radio so they can listen to
spk_0
music, which ends up being a mistake because you can track that turns out if you're a criminal,
spk_0
you basically just can't use any technology. That's right. Because it'll get you.
spk_0
Robbie tells Tom that Jason of Darkheart's fame beat his brother Billy to death and that's what
spk_0
started this whole thing. He's like just given Tom the story, right? He's not really withholding
spk_0
much here other than whether or not Sam is alive. He's telling Tom, you know, sort of his whole
spk_0
history. Robbie's got a duffle bag. Yeah. They're going to a pickup game. But it took me a while to
spk_0
figure out like, okay, when he met with Freddie, yeah, did he get the money already? Like my brain
spk_0
did not catch up there very quickly. It wasn't until deep into this car ride with Tom that I was
spk_0
like, okay, so he's got the drugs in the bag still. Yeah. He's going to the meetup. Yeah.
spk_0
And he's taking Tom as sort of like an insurance policy is what I thought at first. That's what I
spk_0
thought too. But now I'm not so sure. So yeah, we'll get to what his plan was exactly at the end.
spk_0
So he also tells Tom that Jason got Cliff as well because Tom asked where Cliff is.
spk_0
Grasso gets to Robbie's house and finds Tom's car and phone. But no, Tom,
spk_0
Maeve walks into the station with Sam and turns herself in. She's taken in to be interviewed.
spk_0
Sam has taken to be evaluated. He's got no visible signs of trauma, bruising, etc.
spk_0
Kathleen McGinty, aka, Cath goes in interviews. Maeve, we do not get to be privy to that interview,
spk_0
which I find to be really interesting. Jason shows up and picks up Perry tells Perry that
spk_0
Freddie called and it's Robbie Printer Grasst. Billy's brother who's been ripping them off.
spk_0
They're all going to go meet out at Billy's hunting cabin in Bushkill at 6 p.m. That's the meat
spk_0
that was set between Robbie and Freddie, Freddie tipped off the dark hearts. There's a line from
spk_0
what's which one from Jason where he's like Freddie called it's Robbie Printer Grasst, Billy's
spk_0
brother. They demanded double and had me in a tough spot and I didn't know what to do in
spk_0
Perry's like it's all right, kid, you did good. And I'm like demanded doubles. He mean double the
spk_0
amount of money? Yeah. Yes. Okay. So when Freddie said everything what he meant was double.
spk_0
Because it's not everything. Well, no, okay. So he double is, didn't that he agreed to
spk_0
in their original conversation? Does Freddie demand 50 percent? Yes. Right. I'm pretty sure he wants
spk_0
half. Okay. So what's double 50 percent? Everything. 100 percent. So he wants all the money from
spk_0
this deal. I think that's, I think that's an exchange for getting them the rat. Yeah. Got you.
spk_0
Yeah. There we go. Yeah. Okay. So Perry gets in the car with Jason and two other dark hearts who
spk_0
all powered on their cell phones so they can't be tracked. I'm going to go dark. Perry,
spk_0
Perry, I love the names in rural Pennsylvania. Everything is like Wuss and Natchy Park. Yep.
spk_0
And then there's, and then there's random city names that aren't city names like Wuss and Natchy.
spk_0
Like metric. Yeah. Or media. There's, you see their metric or media. I think they need
spk_0
you. That they pass on the highway. Yeah. Like one or so there's mentioned in another episode.
spk_0
There's just an insane like I find the names are really, really interesting. I guess if you set a
spk_0
show in Texas like like maybe you'd be able to come up with a bunch of places that people would
spk_0
be like, what now? Oh, 100. Yeah. Definitely. But it just, I don't know. I like kind of smiled
spk_0
to myself when earlier in the episode when when Robbie's talking about how they got Cliff at Wuss and
spk_0
Natchy Park. Wuss and Natchy Park. This is the first time I noticed that. Now they got to go
spk_0
to Bush kill. Bush kill. Both Jason and Aaron. I don't know. I'm doing like Minnesota now. I don't
spk_0
know. Are spelled with a Y. Yeah. J.A. Y. S.O.N. is Jason spelling and E.R.Y. N. is Aaron spelling.
spk_0
I don't know what to make of that. It's like some George R. Martin shit. Aaron go bra. Can't spell
spk_0
them normally. Um, so uh, oh, Perry lies and tells Jason he slipped getting out of the shower
spk_0
this morning. Also Jason when they were on the phone earlier or I'm sorry. Yeah. Jason asks Perry like,
spk_0
hey, have you, have you heard from Aaron? Could you tell your old lady to like ask her? I've
spk_0
said she's seen Aaron. Is anybody seen my girlfriend or whatever wife? Kids got home and she won
spk_0
there. Yeah. She wasn't there. Yeah. Um, Alia Clinton tells Kath that Thomas missing. Grasso was
spk_0
supposed to meet him at Robbie's house. Kath says to call central. She wants every single tag reader
spk_0
within 50 miles of Robbie's house looking for his vehicle. The chase is on. I couldn't figure out
spk_0
what that meant exactly at first, but it sounds like they're using the toll booths to track his
spk_0
tags so they can see exactly where he's at. Um, Emily Brandis, Tom's daughter gets pulled out of her
spk_0
school, her classroom as a result of all this. Grasso text Jason not to go up to Bush kill because
spk_0
Robbie has taken a federal agent hostage. Kath and Alia and Lizzie pick up Grasso to go find Tom.
spk_0
I'm not sure why Grasso was on the side of the road. I also got a smile out of Grasso's to
spk_0
text to Jason where he has to spell out Prindergrass each time. Yeah. And just funny, like thinking
spk_0
about like, you're this double crossing rat and the thing and you still have to like, oh, no, Pete
spk_0
are now and you know auto corrects going to turn that into something god knows god knows what it
spk_0
would make this funny that he had to type Prindergrass out at least twice. Yeah. Um, on their drive
spk_0
Robbie and Tom pass a dead deer that tried to cross the road. So we get some full circle and
spk_0
Sam being obsessed with trying to save animals. Uh, they talk about life whether or not people are
spk_0
scared when they're read their last rights, uh, the lack of an afterlife, so on and so forth.
spk_0
Really connecting these two men, you know, Tom tells Robbie the story about the summer
spk_0
manager bird that showed up in his backyard recently, the vagrant, a bird that's straight outside
spk_0
its normal range straight so far that it's forgotten how to find its way home. Most of them don't survive.
spk_0
This was a great little monologue. I'm making fun of it now, but I really worked. Yeah. I enjoyed
spk_0
this a lot. Uh, Robbie's response. What a lovely story. Thank you for sharing, Tom. I kidnapped the
spk_0
world's most depressing human made me laugh out loud. And uh, Tom says what I'm saying, Robbie is
spk_0
you can still go home. Robbie forces Tom on to get off the highway so they can't be tracked as
spk_0
easily. We get a little scene where Emily and Tom's biological daughter Sarah talk and Sarah
spk_0
tells Emily that her and her husband have been separated for four months, do it to an affair
spk_0
that he had with one of a law student. Sounds like he might be in law school. I don't know, it
spk_0
doesn't matter. Yeah. Yeah. Wasn't really sure why I should give a shit about this. And it's not
spk_0
that it's not sad, but like we've got enough sadness. Yeah. There's enough depth. There's
spk_0
enough depth to this story. And I was just like, yeah, yeah, yeah, get along. Get along with it.
spk_0
Get along with it. I love God. Again, I just not a not a terrible it worked just fine, but it was
spk_0
just funny when Sarah is giving that monologue. She's like, you know what the worst part is. And I'm
spk_0
like, oh, she's going to drop some bombshell here about the the affair. And then she and then she
spk_0
says, she looked just like me. It's like he traded me in for a younger version. As if that is some
spk_0
novel mind blowing thing that is literally like that's a cliche. Yes. Yeah. That guys
spk_0
trade their wives in for younger versions. Yeah, but I think that was their point. That's what makes
spk_0
it the worst part. The worst part is that it's such a lame cliche. Okay. Okay. Okay.
spk_0
Like her husband just ended up being the most lame cliche version of a man because that's the thing
spk_0
that they do. She delivers that he traded her. She traded me in for a younger version as if
spk_0
she came up with that line. That was my that that's where I just got you. Yeah. I was also she gives
spk_0
the little detail that she met the girl at one point and told her how pretty she was and like that
spk_0
would sting. Yeah. It would sting. Sarah tells Emily she doesn't want her to feel like all she's
spk_0
allowed to feel is gratitude anymore. So we did get part of what I think this episode was trying to
spk_0
convey is that this this tragic incident here of Tom being kidnapped by a drug dealer robbing
spk_0
yeah child kidnapper right. Sort of brings everybody back closer and into a good perspective. Yeah.
spk_0
You know, because you have these moments that we're about to get to where once he sets Tom free
spk_0
and tells him to walk through the woods for a mile. Right. Tom is like looking around and
spk_0
observing the beauty of the world and such. You know nature. Yeah. People humanity.
spk_0
Age of versus nurture nature always wins. So, uh, Kath, Aliyah, Lizzy and Grasso find out Tom and
spk_0
Robbie must have exited the highway somewhere so they do the same. Robbie forces Tom to drive off
spk_0
into the woods on a dirt road. Tom thinks Robbie is going to kill him once to call his kids. At
spk_0
no point did I think Robbie was going to kill this guy. No. Like when he gets out of the car and he's
spk_0
like start walking. I was like, dude, walk faster. He's freeing you because he's walking slow and
spk_0
like worried he's about to get God. I was like, no, no. Can you not read the. Did you
spk_0
leave man? Did you catch that Robbie was pissing? Yeah. And at that moment, I honestly thought the
spk_0
only reason he pulled over was so he could take a piss and then he was about to make Tom get back
spk_0
in the car. Yeah, same. But, uh, yeah, Robbie takes a piss makes Tom promise to take care of
spk_0
that's a big important moment that you hope Tom will, uh, yeah, she had nothing to do with this.
spk_0
We'll stick with, right? Uh, then tell us Tom to walk into the woods for a mile or so and he's like,
spk_0
you'll see it. It's beautiful. And I was curious. I was in hindsight. I should have known. It's
spk_0
just the fucking quarry because that's all this guy cares about it. It's a goddamn quarry. And,
spk_0
and I think I don't think it was a quarry. I think it was a lake. Yeah, I was some lake body of water.
spk_0
With families, people are kids and yeah, it's beautiful. It's beautiful. Tom tries one last time to
spk_0
tell Robbie he doesn't have to go through with this that he can still go home. Robbie says he doesn't
spk_0
know the way home. No more. And Tom walks until he gets to the water and asks to borrow somebody's
spk_0
phone. He calls Emily, which felt important. Yep. Doesn't call Sarah. He calls Emily to tell him,
spk_0
tell her he's okay. Sarah is with her too, of course. But he seems like he's like, you know,
spk_0
he can love and appreciate his family again. Yeah. And he had that taken from him when his adopted
spk_0
son murdered his wife. You know, so that's good. Yeah. That's that's the most positive thing I think
spk_0
we're going to get in this show if I had to guess with this moment. Alia is disgusted by the way
spk_0
calf eats. She's an emotional leader. It turns out Tom calls calf and tells her where he is.
spk_0
They're going to pick Tom up and they're going to use Robbie's satellite radio to track his car.
spk_0
So Robbie gets out to his brother Billy's hunting cabin. We've got the FBI, Tom,
spk_0
Catholic, Aliyah, Lizzie and Grasso headed to find Tom or to find Robbie, rather, plus all the
spk_0
dark hearts. They're like three trucks worth of dark hearts, lots of dark hearts. They're all
spk_0
converging on the same location. You mentioned it might be a four way. Yeah. I don't know if
spk_0
Freddie or them are going to roll out here too. Possibly. Yeah. Probably not. I think it's. I think
spk_0
we've got our three Mexican standoff participants. Yes. Thank you. Yeah. So the FBI splits up.
spk_0
Lizzie and Grasso on one side. Tom, Catholic and Aliyah might be tested there for for
spk_0
old grass. Yeah. Yeah. They're clearly setting us up here for some shit. Yeah.
spk_0
Robbie takes his drugs down by a river. Takes his shirt off. Does the whole heart explosion
spk_0
avoidance ritual one more time? Tom finds them. Pulse is gun. Yells. Robbie. Robbie.
spk_0
And immediately we pan over to the dark hearts who are like, he's that way. It's like, God, damn it.
spk_0
So Robbie pulls his pistol, a standoff ensues. It's over.
spk_0
Cliffhanger. Great finishing line though. I like that. I like that he yelled that and cut the
spk_0
red. It's cut to black. So. So yeah, my biggest question is did calf figure out Grasso
spk_0
was the informant because it to me, it seems like yes. Like they had they went out of their way
spk_0
to give us this scene where this guy comes into her office and is like, I've got something for you.
spk_0
You told me to do that digging. Right. Here's here's the answer. Right. And they intentionally
spk_0
keep us from it. But she still takes Grasso with her on this mission. But she's got this look
spk_0
in her eye. Cath does. Like I know something is going on here. But then when Tom splits them up,
spk_0
like why would calf allow Grasso to go alone with Lizzy? I've just clearly we're going to get some answers
spk_0
next episode. It's really tough. It's really tough to know. Do you think we're okay? I said that we
spk_0
were all the way out on cat being in on this or or a rat or whatever. Yeah. Is that a good place
spk_0
to be or do we think that there is still room for like the way that she's tracking and hunting down
spk_0
Tom and emotionally eating and like doing it like it felt like she is invested in Tom. It felt
spk_0
like she is concerned for her team. Like I was. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That. Oh yeah. You know, the
spk_0
emotion that she was wearing on her sleeve. So like I want to say that she is part of the team and
spk_0
not not a rat. But what you're laying out is makes it unclear. And let me let me just bring one other
spk_0
thing up for you. We got the note about Alia being the best shooter. The best shooter this side of
spk_0
them is sharp shooter. She's sharp shooter. She was I she won police pistol. She won police pistol.
spk_0
We've nicknamed her bullseye. Yeah. At the same time we've sent Grasso out with Lizzy. Lizzy has
spk_0
been trying to connect with Alia this whole time. Come Rotary. You know, teamwork makes the dream
spk_0
work. Yeah. Rotary. Like yeah, I see where you're going. I used to where I'm going. Yes. Alia is
spk_0
going to have an opportunity to to save Lizzy is what I'm imagining. Yeah. Is going to happen.
spk_0
Maybe by having to kill Grasso. Exactly. So that kind of that factors into what you're saying. Like
spk_0
why so why would if Kath knows about Grasso then why would she allow this to go forward?
spk_0
Like why would she bring him why would she let him participate all that? So maybe the guy did
spk_0
some digging and didn't come up with anything. Maybe. Maybe. I don't know though. It's seemed
spk_0
look I don't think they can flip it back and have Kath still be and have two rat crooked. I don't
spk_0
think they can do that. That's too much flip floppy trickery for my liking. I don't think that's
spk_0
the reason. Brad Engelsby is a pretty good writer. Yeah. You know, I just don't see that.
spk_0
What you just laid out is a very good point. I'm just super curious. Like what does she know
spk_0
at this point? Because why in the name of God, which she rolled out into the woods? Because they even
spk_0
she even says at one point like we're not going to get a local, a lot of local help out here.
spk_0
You know, when they're like do we have backup? What other departments are going to come back us up?
spk_0
And she's she basically makes it seem like it might just be them. Yeah. Well, if it's just them,
spk_0
wouldn't it be a massive risk to roll out in two teams, one of which 50% of is
spk_0
clearly informing for the other side? It's just yeah, I don't know. Here's another question.
spk_0
In in in real world. Tom Brandes gets this information that he probably has a leak.
spk_0
Aren't you just scrapping the whole task force and getting a new one? Yeah, I guess it's like a
spk_0
manpower issue though. Maybe in part. Yeah, I don't I don't know. I don't know because he certainly
spk_0
seemed like it seemed like Tom after the you know, what was that last episode of the one before that
spk_0
where they where they're doing the cliff meetup last episode. When that goes awry, he seemed
spk_0
pretty freaking convinced there's a rat that somebody is informing for the criminals. Yeah.
spk_0
Halloween. Nord. What it was Siri chiming in if you're if you're what if you're Halloween. Nord.
spk_0
If you're a Halloween nerd, I have just the rap for you. If you're a Halloween. Nord. She said
spk_0
north. What what did I say that could have triggered this? It's my Siri on my computer. If you
spk_0
couldn't hear it on the microphone, all of a sudden it just chimes in. If you're a Halloween
spk_0
nerd, I have just the rap for you. Hey, mad witches want to hear me slay? Hey, referees,
spk_0
hate to see me play. Hey, got my mask on right on my face. Hey, trick or treaters trying to keep
spk_0
my pace. You must have said something. You must have said the magic word for her to do a Halloween
spk_0
rat. I'm not even done tricking around, treating around clowning, spooking around, scaring around,
spk_0
flouncing candy and bags in your hands in your mouth and ghouling around ghosting around bouncing.
spk_0
I have never had Siri serve me up with a song before that it just made up, but that's the Halloween song.
spk_0
There's the Siri Halloween. We just close on that. Okay, but yeah, we got two of these left,
spk_0
two episodes left. Next week is the penultimate and then the finale, of course, seven episode,
spk_0
a little mini series thing. We've got limited series, mini series.
spk_0
One and a half minutes. No one's serious.
spk_0
Do you expect, because this is our only conversation around this this week. We're not,
spk_0
you know, Patreon, we're doing the wire. Right. Do you expect Robbie to make it out of this alive?
spk_0
Who do you expect to make out of this alive? I kind of do think Robbie's going to make it out of
spk_0
this alive. He'd be some twist with it because he's he seems completely screwed. He does, but the
spk_0
one surprised me either way, but the summer teenager metaphor and all the talk about,
spk_0
I don't know the white home no more. I don't know what that accent was. Jesus Christ. I mean,
spk_0
it's kind of close. That's how I feel when I'm listening to his accent. I'm like, I don't know
spk_0
what this accent is. But like, it's kind of just it all north, north hick. It almost made me
spk_0
you know, it's it's it's almost pushing me to the like, maybe there is a way home for Robbie,
spk_0
you know? Yeah. Because otherwise, why hammer at home Tom? Tom said that there was one. Now,
spk_0
like I said, I didn't quite catch that this was Billy's place. That gives me a lot more confidence
spk_0
in whatever the plan that Robbie has is. I think yeah. Yeah. And with you, I didn't really understand
spk_0
what he was going to do with Tom. I think now it makes more sense. He gets stopped by Tom.
spk_0
And Tom is there and will ostensibly like stop Robbie from enacting his plan. And he can't
spk_0
just get in his car and leave Robbie with his because then there's going to be a chase. He
spk_0
doesn't want to leave Tom there to collect himself and meet up with the rest of the team. So by
spk_0
kidnapping Tom, he's just continuing his plan. He's like, well, I got to get out to Bushkill.
spk_0
Right. So this cabin. I can't let this dude just go screw it up. This dude goes screw it up. So I
spk_0
just got to take him with me and he'll he'll show for me out there. And then once he's fulfilled
spk_0
that duty, then I can let him wander off into the, you know, into the woods. But yeah, he even
spk_0
delivers that line where he's like, Tom, I like you, but I don't like you enough to let you fuck
spk_0
up my plan. Yeah. And he really seems like he's got a plan, which we've been waiting for. Because
spk_0
at no point this season has Robbie really had a good plan. Right. May it keeps being like, what
spk_0
you're going to do with the six year old kidnap? And he's like, I'll figure something out. Yeah.
spk_0
It's like, all right, well, now would be a good time for that. Yeah. Anyway, he keeps, he keeps
spk_0
telling him pressing upon Tom that he's got a plan. Yeah. He gets out to brother Billy's cabin.
spk_0
Mm-hmm. He takes the drugs down by the river. Does the heart explosion avoidance technique?
spk_0
He's like, which like, dude, I don't know. You're taking time to go fuck around in the water. Yeah.
spk_0
And you're about to do this whole, this whole thing. I mean, I feel like chances are,
spk_0
chances are still that his plan is really not a very good one. I think that, I don't remember if I
spk_0
laid this out on Patreon or on Outbase last week. But like, I think his way out is if, you know,
spk_0
is if we can make Jason and the team and the dark hearts team that's out there, the real bad guys.
spk_0
If the task force can essentially like divert their attention to whatever it is that they're doing,
spk_0
then maybe Robbie can like get off with some type of lighter sentence or whatever and
spk_0
and he won't have this, you know, these guys chasing him down anymore if they all die out here and
spk_0
this stand off and like, whatever else. But yeah, Robbie has to kind of, he's going to have to
spk_0
like submit to the will of the task force in a way, I think, to make that happen. And he doesn't
spk_0
seem to really want to do that at the moment. No. And I'll go back to that that he does. All of this
spk_0
feels a little death wishy because I don't know how he's going to get this money, how he's going to
spk_0
get it to his kids, how he thinks he's going to escape, like any of it, like I don't know what the
spk_0
point of any of it is. And that's why it's, I think that just comes back to the line. He doesn't know
spk_0
how to get home anymore. He doesn't know what he's doing. He doesn't know like he's lost. He's
spk_0
fucked. Yeah, because look, let's pretend Robbie's so stupid that he doesn't know what Aaron has
spk_0
told him, which is that if you try to sell the drugs to Freddie, Freddie is going to tell the dark
spk_0
cards. Okay. So let's, let's just live in that reality for a second. So Robbie is going out there
spk_0
to brother Billy's cabin with the intention of meeting up with Freddie and just one off selling
spk_0
the drugs. We know this is not the case. So it's not that because he's got to be smart enough to know
spk_0
what Aaron told him is real. Right. That if he goes to Freddie, Freddie is going to turn on him and
spk_0
give him up to the dark cards. He's got to know that. Therefore, he has to know that the dark
spk_0
cards are coming out to brother Billy's cabin. Yeah. So his plan has to be that he's going to
spk_0
home alone them. Yeah, to kill all the dark cards. Where it gets a little more confusing is like,
spk_0
why are you down by the river brother? What are you doing? He's, he's, he's doing his
spk_0
prep and yeah, he's doing his ritual. You didn't think that maybe the FBI agent you dropped off a
spk_0
mile, which I would note, let's say he did walk the whole mile. That can be done in 10, 15 minutes.
spk_0
Yeah. Yeah. That's a misstep. And he does that, I think, because he likes Tom. Yeah. And I get
spk_0
that will like tie him to a tree literally anything, but being like head that way for a mile and you'll
spk_0
run into a lot of people, one of which will help you with the phone, you know, so that you guys can
spk_0
just figure out where I'm at. Look at his split. And so now he's in this situation in the woods where
spk_0
he's, you know, I want to stand off with an FBI agent that he does not want to kill. And I have
spk_0
to imagine that an option here is that the dark hearts roll up as they are pointing their guns at
spk_0
each other. And like that, the whole thing pops off in another direction. So Robbie and Tom don't
spk_0
have to kill each other or whatever. But yeah, yeah, you look, the show's been done really well
spk_0
in this light that like you do not, you do not know what to expect. Like what's going to happen.
spk_0
I just, the one concern I have for the last couple episodes is that there, it will be kind of stupid.
spk_0
Like because this is Robbie's stupid. He's a stupid man. He's made a lot of stupid, stupid decisions
spk_0
this season that have put him in a very stupid place ending episode five here. The only real out I
spk_0
can see for him is like Robbie goes to prison, but he's happy, right, and free and his kids can come
spk_0
visit him in prison or some shit. Yeah, like that. But like he committed a double murder, triple murder,
spk_0
triple murder. I think he killed three bikers in that house, so I'm not mistaken. Well, Cliff got
spk_0
at least one of them, right? Yeah, okay. He did murder. He did murder. And he kidnapped a six-year-old.
spk_0
He's gonna have to do time. There's no world in which Robbie does not go to prison or die at the
spk_0
end of this season. I think you're, yes, Robbie's, can it, a thing seems done. Robbie's way home
spk_0
requires some prison time. I just think that he could probably get off with like a
spk_0
aggravated manslaughter murder one gets out in 15-ish years maybe something murder three. I
spk_0
don't know how the numbers were. I mean, he can inform on the dark hearts and help bring down
spk_0
that whole organization and get time knocked off the sentence or whatever. I can see that route
spk_0
being a possibility. Yeah, yeah. I just, I'm not sure what the show is supposed to be if like
spk_0
Robbie dies, his kids are orphans, the dark hearts get wiped out and like what was this if that's
spk_0
like there has to be some cool ending. I'm assuming there's going to be a cool ending. Tom's
spk_0
going to put his family back together, you know? Okay, yeah, well that that'll be good. Yeah.
spk_0
And Maeve will, I don't know, have some closure about her dad and take the kids and
spk_0
start a new life, start a new life in Canada. Walks a touchy way. Yeah, or in Canada. Because it
spk_0
seems like the Bartosz thing is off the table. The cops are on to him. They're on to
spk_0
yeah, I don't know what to expect. I like it. I thought this episode was riveting. Yeah, it was
spk_0
a god awful amount of anxiety to experience on a Sunday night. I was fucking tense. This thing
spk_0
had me. I yeah, I think maybe because of the last episode was so incredibly heavy and dark.
spk_0
This one actually felt like kind of light on its feet. By comparison. Yeah. Yeah, well, that's
spk_0
you know, there were no deaths. Nobody got serenade. Aaron got Aaron got grounded.
spk_0
Yeah. But no serenade murder. Yeah, hopefully no more of that to be had. So we'll see what happens
spk_0
out there with this standoff in the woods. I assume episode six will be this explosive sort of
spk_0
finish to the task force and their case classic penultimate HBO is what is what I'm expecting here.
spk_0
And then the finale can be the fallout from all this. Yeah. Where are surviving characters end up?
spk_0
Tom putting his family back together, maybe attending the sentencing hearing for his son. Yeah,
spk_0
because we've still got that to deal with. Yep, we got to wrap up. I assume that'll be in the finale.
spk_0
And yeah, he's probably going to deliver one of them speeches. I'd imagine.
spk_0
At the at the the sentencing hearing, you think he'll do it. Yeah, because you know what's
spk_0
important for a priest to get to grant forgiveness forgiveness. It is. Yeah, that's how you get
spk_0
to like that. Isn't that one of the episode names? No man is stronger than forgiveness or something
spk_0
like that. Something like that. Yeah. And we were like, what the hell is this title had nothing
spk_0
to do with anything in the episode and seem like it. Yeah. Yeah. All right, we'll find out next
spk_0
week. What a what a way it says in the the old penultimate episode of task here. If I had to rate
spk_0
this show currently with two episodes remaining because like through episode one, I was like,
spk_0
this is a nine out of 10. This is crushing. It's kind of lost some points sort of week to week.
spk_0
Yeah. Yeah. I put it out like somewhere between a seven and a seven point five. I'm going
spk_0
letter grade. And right now I've got it at a B plus B plus B plus. It's a little higher than I
spk_0
am, I think. Okay. And in large part because I need them to bring this thing home and an effective
spk_0
and cohesive and intelligent manner. I don't want to spend the penultimate pod or finale pods
spk_0
sitting here having a bitch about shit that just didn't make any goddamn sense. Yeah. Okay.
spk_0
That's what I'd like to avoid. Yeah. So, Barrett and I will be back next Monday with our discussion
spk_0
and review of task episode six. We will also be back later this week on patreon.com slash
spk_0
oysters clams cockles to discuss and review season one episode 11 of the wire exclusively on Patreon
