Hello, my name is Talia Smith and you're listening to Once Upon a Time, a storytelling podcast.
spk_0
Hey friends, it's been a while.
spk_0
But today is International Podcast Day, so we just had to celebrate.
spk_0
In lieu of a traditional episode, today I took to the streets to ask some of my friends and family about their favorite stories.
spk_0
Or, I should say, their most recent stories.
spk_0
Because as you'll hear, it's not always their favorite.
spk_0
We'll go through books, movies, and even some TV shows.
spk_0
And I guess you'll get some fun little comedic bits along the way.
spk_0
We're going to start today off with my favorite conversation, movies.
spk_0
And to better start a conversation about movies, then the woman who introduced me to movies in the first place.
spk_0
My mom.
spk_0
So listening as my mom, my grandma, and a couple of my friends talk about the last movie they watched.
spk_0
My name is Deborah Smith and I know you because I'm your mother.
spk_0
The last narrative would have been Barbie movies.
spk_0
I thought it was fantastic and it was relatable to many age groups.
spk_0
So I enjoyed watching it with my children and my mother.
spk_0
And would you recommend it?
spk_0
Yes.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
Awesome.
spk_0
Hi, my name is Marie and I'm Tally's grandma.
spk_0
My last movie that I saw was The Little Mermaid.
spk_0
And I liked it, but I was a little bit disturbed about some of the scenes.
spk_0
I have a fear of ocean.
spk_0
I have a fear of drowning.
spk_0
And some of those parts left me a little uncomfortable.
spk_0
But I thought the actors in the movie was good, except I feel that that's too dramatic.
spk_0
I worried about what young children would have thought about it.
spk_0
And if that would have instilled a fear in them, like it did with me when I was young.
spk_0
I didn't want to be negative about it, but I thought why does Disney always have to have a villain?
spk_0
Or something scary, otherwise it was good.
spk_0
Yeah, I agree.
spk_0
I was cute.
spk_0
I liked the music.
spk_0
Did you like the music?
spk_0
I did.
spk_0
I loved the music.
spk_0
And I thought that the characters, the female and male characters were good.
spk_0
All of that was good.
spk_0
It's just that the certain scenes were unnerving.
spk_0
That was it, but it was good.
spk_0
My name is Hannah David.
spk_0
And I was on two episodes, The Wizard of Oz episode and The Nutcracker episode.
spk_0
The last movie I watched.
spk_0
Oh, practical magic.
spk_0
It was actually my first time watching it.
spk_0
And I really liked it.
spk_0
I didn't really know much about it, other than I had heard it's a great movie to watch this time of year.
spk_0
So we set my roommates nice, sat down and watched it on Saturday night.
spk_0
And I really enjoyed the story.
spk_0
And I thought it very much gave off spooky fall vibes, which I liked.
spk_0
I would absolutely recommend practical magic to the group.
spk_0
I thought it was a great movie.
spk_0
My name is Max Malan.
spk_0
I know you because we got to grad school together.
spk_0
Oh, I watched that movie at Netflix.
spk_0
Love it for a sight.
spk_0
I loved it and I cried.
spk_0
Hannah and I sat on the wood.
spk_0
My favorite part was when the girl shines up in the sunset's a funeral.
spk_0
But it's actually like a weight and a woman's alive.
spk_0
Incredible.
spk_0
Well, now that you got your movie recommendations,
spk_0
I think it's time for us to imagine ourselves curled up on a comfortable chair with some hot cocoa
spk_0
or a good cup of tea, reading a book.
spk_0
We've got a couple of good book recommendations here.
spk_0
You'll hear from my other grandma and a couple of my friends.
spk_0
Stay tuned.
spk_0
I met you when you were 15 minutes old.
spk_0
And my name is Alia Aliah's Mimi to you.
spk_0
This is so embarrassing, but it was a cute little book.
spk_0
Tell me everything.
spk_0
Oh, Lord.
spk_0
It's name is Elvis and the dearly departed.
spk_0
Elvis is a bass of pound.
spk_0
And things he is the reincarnation of Elvis Presley.
spk_0
Callie is his person.
spk_0
And they've worked at the Turtle Rest funeral home.
spk_0
And she does the makeup.
spk_0
You would think this would be dark.
spk_0
This is actually very funny.
spk_0
I would recommend it to someone who really a break where they sometimes can laugh outside in Elvis.
spk_0
The laugh found loud in Elvis.
spk_0
But I would not recommend it to anyone who doesn't appreciate Southern cozy industries.
spk_0
I'm Marina.
spk_0
I am Talia's roommate.
spk_0
At the most recent book I read was River Woman River Demon by Jennifer Given.
spk_0
I read it on Libby.
spk_0
Libby is an app that connects you with ebooks from your local library.
spk_0
So I get my books from the DC Public Library system, but they come straight to my phone.
spk_0
Yeah, this book is the story of a family living in New Mexico who practices some fabulous Chicana witchcraft.
spk_0
And finds themselves in the middle of a complicated murder mystery plot and deals with it through family, community, and a little witchcraft.
spk_0
It's a blast and I would highly recommend it.
spk_0
My name is Rachel.
spk_0
I know you because we have been as trans since school.
spk_0
The last story I consume book was called Yeah, Endurance by Alfred Lansing.
spk_0
It's a non-tiction story and it's all about Ernest Shackleton who is, I guess, an explorer, I guess is the collector.
spk_0
He was known for traveling to the Arctic and this story was all about, I think it was his third trip to the Arctic.
spk_0
But the goal was that they were going to be the first expedition to cross a continent of Antarctica.
spk_0
I didn't try the book.
spk_0
I think the story is relatively very interesting.
spk_0
Like some of the stuff that happens in it is very crazy and like stuff that you're like, there's no way that happened.
spk_0
But it did.
spk_0
I would say there's a little bit too much boat flingo in it for me.
spk_0
So like you kind of had to get through that.
spk_0
Luckily it's not a long book.
spk_0
It's only like 200 or 300 pages.
spk_0
So like it wasn't that long and you think on the boat.
spk_0
Would you recommend it?
spk_0
I would.
spk_0
I would give this stipulation that it is a nonfiction book.
spk_0
It is written, I think, relatively well for a nonfiction book.
spk_0
Like interestingly for a nonfiction book.
spk_0
Because I think sometimes nonfiction books can get a little dull.
spk_0
Yeah, particularly.
spk_0
Although I guess I might be in the minority.
spk_0
We read it from my book club and I think only like two of us really liked it.
spk_0
Someone thought it was okay and then the other people were like, I was not interested.
spk_0
And then I was like, well, okay.
spk_0
My name is Julia Kielstrap.
spk_0
And I know you threw a group of books.
spk_0
Well, the last book I read was actually finished it last night.
spk_0
It was called the Unexpected President, the Life and Times Chester AR3.
spk_0
I stopped Greenberger.
spk_0
I loved it.
spk_0
I absolutely loved it.
spk_0
I had a very, very low opinion of Chester AR3.
spk_0
I didn't know very much about him and his presidency.
spk_0
And obviously this is one biography.
spk_0
So it could be a pretty biased biography.
spk_0
I don't know that much about the man.
spk_0
But my understanding of Chester AR3 is incredibly more nuanced and more forgiving and open than it once was.
spk_0
And he seems like a pretty good guy.
spk_0
Honestly, the introduction of the book, the author had said something like,
spk_0
Chester AR3 is a man who went wrong to correct himself at the end.
spk_0
And I was like, all right, that sounds easy out.
spk_0
But I think it was pretty great analysis.
spk_0
I learned so much about DC and New York, two places in which I lived.
spk_0
And you should read this book if you have any interest in presidential history.
spk_0
My name is Samantha Weinberger.
spk_0
Tolly is Smith and I met in college.
spk_0
She's one of my very best friends.
spk_0
And yes, I have been on the podcast.
spk_0
Oh, okay, the last book I read is from the warrior witch duology.
spk_0
It was called The Frozen Crown.
spk_0
I loved it.
spk_0
So I like to read a lot of fantasy books.
spk_0
I think it's because I think our real life is too boring.
spk_0
And so if I can imagine myself in a random, far away place with mythical creatures,
spk_0
I can like picture it in my head and I just die right into the storyline and the plot.
spk_0
And just the overall adventure of it all.
spk_0
Finally, we have some TV shows.
spk_0
You'll hear from a couple of friends, my sister, as well as our fearless co-producer, Emily.
spk_0
My name is Juliana Pica and I know you because our moms are best friends
spk_0
and then they had babies and the babies became best friends and we are the babies.
spk_0
So I'm currently watching How I Met Your Mother.
spk_0
I'm on the final season and now I love it.
spk_0
I have to be honest.
spk_0
I was watching it as a recommendation.
spk_0
And I felt like I was kind of pushing through it at the start.
spk_0
And I think that it has a lot to do with like, it's kind of hard to watch things from the 2010s.
spk_0
Now, you feel like, just things that, you know, they thought were funnier, like, objectively not funny.
spk_0
Or, you know, just maybe such as an hit the same because it's not as topical.
spk_0
But now that I'm at the end, I really love it because it was a show full of Easter eggs.
spk_0
And as a Taylor Swift fan, I appreciate an Easter egg.
spk_0
Amazing.
spk_0
So you've found this from a recommendation.
spk_0
Would you go on to recommend it to somebody else?
spk_0
Yes, I would, but I would, I would caveat a lot of those things.
spk_0
I think I'd be like, what?
spk_0
spk_0
Versus the person who wanted me to watch it was like, it's just the best show ever, period.
spk_0
At the beginning, I was like, this is objectively not the best show ever.
spk_0
For me, and maybe for some people it is, I'm not here to yet anybody's yet.
spk_0
You know what I mean?
spk_0
My name is Krily Denise Smith.
spk_0
We share a mother.
spk_0
Actually, my sister's.
spk_0
I was on Betsy Park because she was an icon in a historic place.
spk_0
I was on a set in the sexville where we grew up.
spk_0
Currently, I'm re-washing Gilmore Girls because it's the start of fall.
spk_0
And how can you start fall without watching Gilmore Girls?
spk_0
I like, or pretty much like pre-college.
spk_0
And then the later seasons get a little frustrating.
spk_0
But I really enjoy the year in a life, the one I came out in 2016.
spk_0
That was so funny.
spk_0
And I thought they were going to come out with another one, but it's literally been so many years.
spk_0
I thought we'd get a part two of that.
spk_0
Personally, I think that Logan is the best one for Hori personally.
spk_0
Because he calls her out.
spk_0
He comes from the same kind of world of her grandparents, and she loves her grandparents.
spk_0
I also like Jess, but in the early seasons, he's a total jerk.
spk_0
And he gets like a redemption arc.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
And then his redemption arc, he's almost too good for Hori at that point.
spk_0
When he comes back into my life and is like, I made something on myself.
spk_0
And he's almost like too good for her.
spk_0
So I'm to that and no one likes Dean.
spk_0
And if you like Dean, you're 16.
spk_0
Great answer.
spk_0
Would you recommend Gilmore Girls to the fans?
spk_0
I would recommend Gilmore Girls to the fans.
spk_0
I honestly think it's not like a girl's show either.
spk_0
Well, maybe it is, but I don't know.
spk_0
I think it's good.
spk_0
I think anyone can watch it and enjoy it and get invested.
spk_0
And I think half the fun of the show is that you get angry at their decisions.
spk_0
But you keep watching.
spk_0
Amazing.
spk_0
Hi, this is Emily Joba.
spk_0
You may know me as one of the producers of this podcast alongside Talia.
spk_0
And I'm so excited we're doing this special episode.
spk_0
The story I've been engaging myself in recently that I've been really enjoying is the TV show Reservation Dogs.
spk_0
I just finished the series.
spk_0
They had three seasons that were on FX through Hulu.
spk_0
And they just wrapped on their third season.
spk_0
And honestly, I love when a show knows when to end.
spk_0
The third season really takes a different direction where you're focusing more on each of the characters individually and putting conclusions on their stories.
spk_0
And the show is really...
spk_0
While it deals with a lot of heavy things like grief, like suicide, losing family members,
spk_0
and there are even episodes in the third season where they start to unpack the trauma of boarding schools and residential schools.
spk_0
The way that the United States government has neglected reservations and tribes and all sorts of heavy issues like that.
spk_0
But the show also just looks at, you know, what a what a call teen hijinks.
spk_0
There's kind of this other otherworldly element to this series as well, which I'll just really intertwines beautifully.
spk_0
I've been watching this show for the last few years.
spk_0
And it really has touched me in so many ways.
spk_0
I feel like I know the character so well.
spk_0
I think the sense of humor is really great.
spk_0
As someone who lives in New Jersey and is white and doesn't...
spk_0
I've never been to Oklahoma.
spk_0
I've never really been on a reservation or know much about that culture.
spk_0
But getting to see what that's like and seeing the community values and the culture and all that stuff.
spk_0
And the show is produced and made and acted by Indigenous people.
spk_0
It's just really cool.
spk_0
And I'd never seen anything like it before.
spk_0
And I hope you see many things like it again.
spk_0
So I highly recommend it if you just want some gritty but lighthearted, touching, informative TV series.
spk_0
I highly recommend.

spk_0
I do have a final question that we're asking everyone today. It's kind of silly. Are you ready?
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
Who do you think is the most well adjusted Jonas brother?
spk_0
Oh goodness. Well, I think Nick is.
spk_0
I think Nick is this boy.
spk_0
I'm really next.
spk_0
It was gonna be Joe if you had asked me a couple weeks ago.
spk_0
But now, honestly, I think it's Kevin.
spk_0
Kevin.
spk_0
Probably Kevin.
spk_0
Oh, for what Kevin?
spk_0
Oh, I'm gonna say Kevin.
spk_0
You've never seen an article about Kevin.
spk_0
You know what I mean? Like you simply, you just don't.
spk_0
You know, Kevin was a date and I'm breaking up with Miley Cyrus.
spk_0
Kevin wasn't, you know, watching his wife on a ring doorbell in another country because he asked her landlord for access to it.
spk_0
Kevin, Kevin simply is. He's a new jersey.
spk_0
You know what I mean? I think that's really all we could ask for.
spk_0
The end.
