Hey, man's me Kevin Smith. Are you listening to the right podcast?
spk_0
Because you're supposed to be listening to three guys in Flick.
spk_0
Are you listening to that right now? Then you're in the right place. Enjoy.
spk_0
Ladies and gentlemen, please take your seats. The show is about to begin.
spk_0
That's not a rock. That's the heart of the mountain. She finally broke.
spk_0
3 Guys at a Flick with Don Ken and John. Dive into the movies while after the dawn from the good to the bad to the wildly absurd. They give a fuck about films. Their voices are heard.
spk_0
Welcome back. You are listening to three guys in a Flick. This is where we review the good to bad and the absurd tonight's episode the 33. Beware spoilers.
spk_0
Coming to you from deep in a dark cave, about 700 meters below the ground. My name is Don. And to my right we have the comic book guide John.
spk_0
Alla. And to my left we have the professor can. Hello everybody. And joining us tonight we have two very special guests all the way from Denver, Colorado. I'd like to welcome back my cousin Denise.
spk_0
Hi now. And my cousin, Joni. Hello. Welcome to the show. Cousins. I'll take bachelor number three.
spk_0
You know guy sitting right here. Oh, he's number three. I love it. My wife always says I could bring another woman into the relationship only if she cooks and does a laundry.
spk_0
Nice. Hey, that's like the minor. He had a wife and he had a mistress. I wonder which one cooked and which one did the laundry?
spk_0
The one who brought him lunch in the morning, that's the one that cooked and I thought that was his mother. So, sure, as you want. I know technically isn't every wife.
spk_0
Whoa, whoa, whoa, but whoa. It depends if you marry a child or not.
spk_0
Oh, very. Shots fired. I like that. That was fantastic. So take that.
spk_0
Tonight we are talking about the 33, the 33 comes to us because my cousins were coming to Seattle and Denise was previously on the stand and deliver podcast. And I said, Hey, why don't you and Joni come on the pod? And she was like, yes.
spk_0
And so this is the movie they chose. So why the 33 my cousins.
spk_0
Okay, so the reason that we picked this particular movie is because Joni had three choices and she picked. She said, okay, 33 or Roma. So I started watching Roma and I was really getting into it.
spk_0
I was really excited because I was longing to see Roma. And I have notes on Roma so we could talk later. But then Joni walked into the house and there was this one scene that happened to have a mic on a man.
spk_0
And Joni's like, what are you watching? I said, I'm not watching that movie with that. So longer hanging out. That's exactly what she said. So that's how we pick 33.
spk_0
All right. Well, I for one. Thank you both for picking it because I had heard of it. I had never seen it. And I'm so happy that I watched it. So had you ever seen it, Jon?
spk_0
I had not seen it. And I had vague memories of the actual incident, which makes me feel bad because I, you know, I don't know if I was just watching the news at the time or not paying much attention. But the story just fascinates me.
spk_0
Yeah, well, you should fucking feel bad. Yeah. What about you, sir?
spk_0
Never heard a thing about it. And I'm thinking to myself as I'm watching the movie, what the heck? How do I not have some sort of a knowledge that this took place?
spk_0
I need nothing about any of it. And I have to admit when we started talking about this in the movie, we were going to do I thought it was about the soccer players that got stuck 13 lives directed by Ron.
spk_0
Yeah, that's what I thought too. Oh, there is a movie 13 lives directed by Ron Howard. Okay. It's an excellent watch.
spk_0
Oh, I watched it twice. Oh, well, shit. Listeners 13 lives into the Broncos helmet. That was in thank you. That would be 13 lives.
spk_0
Well, how many 13 are you? You guys are kill me released on November 13, 2015. The 33 was directed by Patricia Riggand, screenplay by Miko Analai, Craig Borton and Michael Thomas based on the book Deep Down Dark by Hector Tobar.
spk_0
And it stars Antonio Benderes, Rodrigo Santoro, Juliet Banoche, James Brolin, Bob Gunten, Gabriel Bern, Lou Diamond Phillips, Jacob Vargas and a bunch of other hot sweaty miners.
spk_0
How does this movie do, Doc? This movie was made for $26 million and brought in $28 million. And what is that in pesos?
spk_0
A hell of a lot.
spk_0
Yeah, so obviously not a huge box office success, but I don't think it really got marketed all that much. No, because I don't even remember coming out.
spk_0
I think, well, now that I've watched it, I do remember hearing of it and remembering that Antonio Benderes was in it and I was like, oh, okay.
spk_0
I mean, I'd watch him act out of a box. I'll say the best part of this movie, like this movie is great movie, but my favorite part is just the fact that I get to say Antonio Benderes.
spk_0
Yeah, well, who doesn't want to say that? My favorite name.
spk_0
Do we know of any other movies that Patricia Riggand has directed?
spk_0
I looked them all them up and it looks like most of my Hispanic movies.
spk_0
Shocker.
spk_0
So I didn't recognize any probably because I'm just a horrible person.
spk_0
Well, at least you admit it and now you're self aware. I'm super proud of you. Aren't we all proud of him now? Yeah, yeah.
spk_0
Yeah, well, I hadn't heard of anything else. She's directed either, but if this is her first American made movie or American released movie, hats off.
spk_0
It was very beautiful to watch.
spk_0
Yeah, I thought so too.
spk_0
Let's talk about this cast a little bit.
spk_0
Antonio Benderes, would you guys think of Antonio?
spk_0
He played his typical energetic, happy and horrible circumstances type character, but I always love him and everything.
spk_0
Yeah, he was good. He brought it.
spk_0
Yeah, yeah.
spk_0
He must have lost a lot of weight for this movie. He just looked like he was starved and dehydrated.
spk_0
Wait, they didn't actually put the actors in the mind and leave them there for 62 days?
spk_0
69.
spk_0
So no, they didn't know.
spk_0
Okay, there you go. Would you guys think of Antonio?
spk_0
I think he's I thought it was really good and he always takes charge no matter what.
spk_0
Yeah, I think he was very charismatic in this and we'll get into the whole story arc of him and the leader this that and the other, but I thought he played it very, very well.
spk_0
Rodrigo Santoro, where do you know him from, John?
spk_0
Which one was he?
spk_0
Was he the deputy? He was the minister.
spk_0
The minister. He looked so familiar. Where do I know him from?
spk_0
I don't know.
spk_0
Anybody? Anybody?
spk_0
No, where are the actors from?
spk_0
No, he plays Xerxes in 300.
spk_0
Really?
spk_0
Yep, that is him.
spk_0
Wow, he's got a good set of hair for being a bald guy for a hunter.
spk_0
Yeah, really?
spk_0
So yeah, I thought he, would you guys think of him as the minister?
spk_0
I liked his story arc a lot.
spk_0
Yeah, me too.
spk_0
He cared.
spk_0
He was really good at displaying emotion without dialogue.
spk_0
You could see it in his eyes that he genuinely cared.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
And if it wasn't for him, they would have just left him to die.
spk_0
Yeah, I agree.
spk_0
Although one of the things, you know, they did obviously sensationalize a lot of things in this movie.
spk_0
They added a lot more like his character didn't actually exist in real life.
spk_0
They just combined a bunch of politicians into one to create this guy.
spk_0
And you know, like he was fighting to keep it going and all that.
spk_0
In real life, that never happened.
spk_0
There was never any question on whether they were going to try to get those miners out.
spk_0
They were going to do it.
spk_0
They were going to do it.
spk_0
Yeah. So they, so cinematically, you know, you come in and date producers are probably like,
spk_0
or whoever wrote the script was probably like, yeah, they came in and there was never any question.
spk_0
But what if there was, right?
spk_0
We could build the drama up just a little bit because ultimately we know what the pay off is.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Yeah. Everyone gets rescued.
spk_0
Docu drama is not unusual for a Docu drama to have a combination of characters in order to streamline the storytelling.
spk_0
Sure.
spk_0
So are you telling me through this whole movie I was pissed off about corporate greed and you're telling me that that didn't really happen?
spk_0
No, that's not what we're saying at all.
spk_0
Oh, okay.
spk_0
Because it seemed like the corporation that owned the mine, they gave up like right away.
spk_0
Like, oh, miners die and it's, you know, no, I don't think they did.
spk_0
They were aholes in the movie and outside the movie.
spk_0
They, everything that they were accused of, they actually did in real life.
spk_0
They didn't do inspections.
spk_0
They didn't, you know, fix things inside the mine.
spk_0
They had pretty much destroyed that mine, which caused all the problems.
spk_0
And then in the end, unfortunately, they weren't found at fault, which is ridiculous.
spk_0
Crazy.
spk_0
Okay, good.
spk_0
So my...
spk_0
Your hatred is justified.
spk_0
And well placed.
spk_0
But the president of the country never faltered.
spk_0
He wanted those miners save the entire time.
spk_0
I didn't realize Juliet Benosh was in this.
spk_0
Did you guys know her for anything?
spk_0
She was the empanada lady.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
I thought she did a good job.
spk_0
I don't know where we know her from.
spk_0
Shock a lot with Johnny Depp.
spk_0
And she's been in a lot of dramas.
spk_0
I think she's French, which is funny because she plays Latina.
spk_0
And she did really good.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
I was pleasantly surprised by her performance.
spk_0
Her slap in the guy kind of took me, I was off-card for that.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
But that didn't really happen.
spk_0
No.
spk_0
That was a drama.
spk_0
And I was afraid that somewhere along the line they were going to drop in a subplot
spk_0
of those two actually getting together.
spk_0
I was expecting it.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
I was waiting for that.
spk_0
I thought at the end of the movie they'd get together as well.
spk_0
What do you think, Johnny?
spk_0
Yeah, they probably did.
spk_0
They were there a long time.
spk_0
spk_0
My man, Lou Diamond Phillips.
spk_0
It was nice to see him back.
spk_0
And I thought he did a, I mean, he was a very reserved role.
spk_0
But he did a pretty good, especially when he started to lose hope.
spk_0
Oh, I thought he did fantastic.
spk_0
You know, he comes out there and he says, the character says, it's about my man.
spk_0
It's that and the other and just his arc and what he goes through.
spk_0
I thought he did a great job.
spk_0
I thought he was weak.
spk_0
He stood up in the office for his men and for the safety.
spk_0
But when it came down to it, he had no faith.
spk_0
He was very distraught that they were just going to die.
spk_0
He didn't want to give them that hope.
spk_0
Where that's where Antonio came in and said, we're going to get out of here.
spk_0
Right?
spk_0
And so for me, I didn't care for him.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
And I thought he could have done more when he went to the office and said, hey,
spk_0
the mine is falling apart.
spk_0
This that I think at that point, he could have done more to prevent that as a manager
spk_0
because he kept saying, my job is to keep everybody safe.
spk_0
But when push came to shove, he just kept doing what he was doing to save his job, I guess.
spk_0
And then like Joni said, when they were down there and he started to falter and fall apart
spk_0
and they gave the leadership role to Antonio.
spk_0
And then after that, when he flew broke down and started crying, I'm like, you know,
spk_0
he really does feel bad because he knows in his heart.
spk_0
None of these people afterwards committed suicide or anything they just went on, right?
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Because in my thought, I was thinking, well, maybe he might even commit suicide
spk_0
because he feels so bad about that situation and he could have prevented it.
spk_0
Yeah. And so the fact that Lou Diamond made you not like him and made you feel that way,
spk_0
I think you did a great job.
spk_0
So for me, I think his story arc is my favorite one.
spk_0
I look at him, his character being where he's at, when he's at the office in the beginning,
spk_0
you know, he's complaining about the standards.
spk_0
But before he leaves the office, he's told that they have a new quota that they have to make.
spk_0
And this new quota, you know, he is slack job by it, which means that he knows management
spk_0
and he knows this what they're like for a long time.
spk_0
They cut corners, they're greedy, and he has to make the best.
spk_0
And he just has to eat what's on his plate.
spk_0
Knowing what he knows, going down into the mind every day, when he does this,
spk_0
I know he's got to have his fingers crossed like, please, please, please,
spk_0
please don't let something horrific happens.
spk_0
When the horrific thing happens, he knows far more than what everybody knows.
spk_0
And based on his experience, my guess is that he is somebody that thinks the company has no money for this
spk_0
and they are going to let us rot down here.
spk_0
Sure. My question is, did they make the quota?
spk_0
Oh, for fuck's sake.
spk_0
They never addressed that.
spk_0
Did you watch the movie?
spk_0
Well, up until that point.
spk_0
This guy.
spk_0
We see Gabriel Bern making a parents.
spk_0
Would you guys think of him?
spk_0
Do you know who Gabriel Bern is?
spk_0
No.
spk_0
He was the guy brought, he was the new chief engineer, the guy who, the British guy.
spk_0
The government brought in.
spk_0
He seems to usually play like a bad guy in movies.
spk_0
I think we know him mostly for bad guy roles, but he does play good guys sometimes.
spk_0
I thought he was a good addition.
spk_0
It's kind of a brief part.
spk_0
He's only in maybe half the movie.
spk_0
But he played the old, I'm the guy in charge.
spk_0
It kind of all falls on me if it doesn't work.
spk_0
Here's what we're going to do.
spk_0
In a lot of movies, you'll get that character who won't listen to anyone else and who has to do it his way.
spk_0
Whatever happens.
spk_0
But in this one, I felt like the character listened and took the advice of others.
spk_0
They all worked together because ultimately the goal was to rescue these miners.
spk_0
When he first came in, my thought initially was this guy can't be trusted.
spk_0
He's going to have issues, he's going to walk away, he's going to give up too soon.
spk_0
I was just waiting for throughout the whole movie and I was pleasantly surprised he kept going.
spk_0
Why? Why did you think that?
spk_0
I felt like when he came in and said I'm in charge and he was taking over and he was doing those.
spk_0
I just felt like, okay, great.
spk_0
Here comes corporate greed.
spk_0
Here comes San Jose mining company brought him in to just try to get this all done and swept under the rug.
spk_0
I had no trust for him.
spk_0
I can see that now.
spk_0
He felt like the wolf that we get out of Harvard, Kitell, and he's all business.
spk_0
Here's what I need and here's how we're going to get it done.
spk_0
How do you feel about this movie basically being an English dialogue and not dubbed to English?
spk_0
Did you have any issues with the fact that it wasn't a Spanish dialogue?
spk_0
No, they haven't been Spanish.
spk_0
When we started watching it, it was all in Spanish and we had to go back.
spk_0
My question is, the Spanish version is the actual dubbed version.
spk_0
They recorded the Spanish over the English dialogue.
spk_0
A lot of people have complained as why didn't they do it in Spanish and then dub in the English?
spk_0
I have an answer.
spk_0
Then we didn't want to hear it.
spk_0
Because American audiences wouldn't have watched it.
spk_0
That's right.
spk_0
If Patricia Rigen is trying to make it out worldwide, you got to appeal to all the audiences.
spk_0
I think the movie would have been much better if they just actually spoke Spanish,
spk_0
gave us subtitles, or then you could have dubbed it in English on the streaming services.
spk_0
I was with you guys.
spk_0
I was watching it was the dubbed version and the Spanish, the way they were speaking it.
spk_0
I was looking at their lips.
spk_0
They were speaking English.
spk_0
I flipped it over.
spk_0
One of the...
spk_0
Because the timing's off.
spk_0
Just the hair.
spk_0
One of the reviewers that I watched when I was doing my research brought up a great point
spk_0
that what they should have done is they should have done the same thing that Hunt for Red October did,
spk_0
which is start them speaking Spanish and then just subtly switched to English to say,
spk_0
oh, now this is for the audience.
spk_0
Oh, yeah.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Actually, that's what I thought was going to happen when we first started watching it in Spanish.
spk_0
I thought that was going to go into English.
spk_0
Are we ready for some trivia?
spk_0
Let's get mine in, baby.
spk_0
So first question.
spk_0
When somebody is talking...
spk_0
I can't remember who it was, but when somebody's talking to the foreman,
spk_0
and the foreman mentions that he's been a minor for 25 years,
spk_0
and in that 25 years, how many collapses has he seen?
spk_0
Ken.
spk_0
Ken.
spk_0
Five.
spk_0
Five collapses.
spk_0
And how many survivors Ken?
spk_0
None.
spk_0
No survivors.
spk_0
Point goes to Ken.
spk_0
Second question.
spk_0
Up top, when they established that settlement for the families and everything,
spk_0
what do they name the settlement?
spk_0
Don.
spk_0
Don.
spk_0
Happy campground?
spk_0
That is incorrect.
spk_0
Camp Hope?
spk_0
Camp Hope goes to Ken.
spk_0
Were you going to say that?
spk_0
I said I was at Hope, but I didn't know what the camp was.
spk_0
Camp Hope, that is correct.
spk_0
Third question.
spk_0
When they set up the camera so that the people could talk to their families,
spk_0
how much time was each minor given to talk to their families?
spk_0
Ken.
spk_0
Eight minutes.
spk_0
Eight minutes.
spk_0
That is correct.
spk_0
Ken is running away with this.
spk_0
I think we already know who's won this.
spk_0
So I'm going to make this one worth five points.
spk_0
Oh, here we go.
spk_0
Turn the cans, Mike.
spk_0
Oh fuck, what number is he?
spk_0
So that's how we're going to roll.
spk_0
That's how we're rolling.
spk_0
No, I'm just teasing.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
When Lou Diamond's character, Don Lucho, is the last one down in the cave.
spk_0
He looks at the wall and sees the writing on the wall.
spk_0
I haven't finished my question yet.
spk_0
She's a guest.
spk_0
Be nice.
spk_0
There are three lines written on the thing.
spk_0
What is the final bottom line written on the cave wall?
spk_0
You said your name there.
spk_0
What's the answer?
spk_0
Oh, it's right here.
spk_0
Wait.
spk_0
She wrote it down, Don?
spk_0
Fuck off, John.
spk_0
I thought I did.
spk_0
I know if you don't.
spk_0
I thought I thought.
spk_0
We are all alive in the message.
spk_0
That's the note that goes up.
spk_0
I'm talking about what was painted on the wall.
spk_0
We are still all alive.
spk_0
No, I don't know.
spk_0
Don?
spk_0
God was with us.
spk_0
God was with us.
spk_0
Don pulls it out.
spk_0
Now put it back away, Don.
spk_0
Whoa, whoa, whoa.
spk_0
That's inappropriate.
spk_0
What's the price?
spk_0
Bragging rights.
spk_0
Oh, well, Don does that anyway?
spk_0
Wow, it's almost like she knows me, huh?
spk_0
Don got to pull it out.
spk_0
In August 2010, 33 miners in Copapoo, Chile go to work in the San Jose mine.
spk_0
Years of ignored warnings and poor safety measures catch up with the owners.
spk_0
The mine collapses, sealing the men inside.
spk_0
The miners scrambled through the rubble and managed to reach a refuge chamber.
spk_0
The survival looks grim.
spk_0
The radio is dead.
spk_0
The medical kit is empty.
spk_0
And food supplies amount to only a handful of tuna cans and cookies.
spk_0
Tensions flare as fear set in.
spk_0
But Mario, Sapovina, steps up as a reluctant leader.
spk_0
He takes control of rationing and helps keep order as disparate threatens to fracture the group.
spk_0
Meanwhile, outside the mine, families gather at the gate.
spk_0
Furious that the company offers no real rescue effort.
spk_0
So this movie kicks off and we get our opening credits.
spk_0
But we also get some pretty impressive looking wide shots of the area.
spk_0
And I thought to myself, huh, right off the bat, this looks really pretty.
spk_0
And then we have what we didn't even talk about, which was unsurprised.
spk_0
We have James Horner's score come in.
spk_0
And I went, oh my god, that's James Horner.
spk_0
A very popular composer is done.
spk_0
He did Titanic. He did Braveheart.
spk_0
He's a great composer and he passed away not too long ago.
spk_0
This might have actually been his last film.
spk_0
But anyways, I remember thinking to myself, okay, so it looks pretty.
spk_0
It's a great composer.
spk_0
And this could be a really good flick.
spk_0
And that fly-in shot, as we fly in from the distance up high,
spk_0
we fly down to the mine, shaft opening.
spk_0
Oh, that's so good.
spk_0
Yeah. I wonder if that was probably CG at some point.
spk_0
But had to be. Yeah.
spk_0
Look really good.
spk_0
And then we cut to a retirement party.
spk_0
And now we're going to start to meet our characters.
spk_0
Would you guys think of this opening mingle to meet our characters?
spk_0
I always appreciate a scene where they just get through it fast.
spk_0
We got a pretty good idea who each person was and their attitudes and their issues.
spk_0
You figure it out pretty quick and I always like it so I like that.
spk_0
Yeah, I wouldn't move briskly.
spk_0
But on the other hand, it's also a little...
spk_0
It can also be a little disappointing because the way that we are spoon-fed,
spk_0
okay, this is the young guy and he's got a little one on the way.
spk_0
This is the guy who...
spk_0
A bambindal.
spk_0
This is the guy that is going to be going into the mind for the first time.
spk_0
And so, you know, it feels a little...
spk_0
forced.
spk_0
Is it wrong that on my scorecard I figured the guy that was going to retire in two weeks, he was a goner?
spk_0
I thought they were foreshadowing that for sure.
spk_0
I thought the same thing. He's not coming out alive.
spk_0
Yeah. And I immediately will not at this part.
spk_0
But yeah, I got to know these characters and then it sets in, right?
spk_0
Oh, these are the guys who are going to go down there.
spk_0
And not knowing the story, I'm trying to pick out who's going to make it and who's not, right?
spk_0
And then I really thought that Antonio Banderas, because he's Antonio Banderas
spk_0
and they cast him for a reason, I thought he would make a self-sacrifice or do something.
spk_0
He would be the Bruce Willis of Armageddon, you know what I mean?
spk_0
Help everyone get out but not make it out himself.
spk_0
I figured the guy with two weeks would be the one to make the sacrifice play.
spk_0
Well, no, I figured he was dead just because he only had two weeks.
spk_0
But I assumed, because I'm a dick and I didn't know about the situation.
spk_0
I assumed we were going to lose my quarter of the 33.
spk_0
In the actual, no, it'll have to be after.
spk_0
But yeah, what do you guys think of the scene?
spk_0
Well, as the scene, I loved the scene because it had all the family.
spk_0
But I'm not a professional like you three and start dissecting from the scene,
spk_0
because I'm just watching the movie.
spk_0
The young man that had the baby in real life, he was not the first one to come out of the tunnel.
spk_0
There was also no baby in real life.
spk_0
Well, that would make sense why he didn't come out first time.
spk_0
So this exposition, no works for greater dramatic effect.
spk_0
And so having those inconsistencies, it's a little, you're a little crestfallen because of that.
spk_0
I got that because, you know, oh, I was really rooting for the guy and it turned out it didn't go like that.
spk_0
So yeah, I feel you.
spk_0
But it did give you, I obviously they have to sense sensationalize some of it to keep the audience engaged.
spk_0
And it did give you something to kind of root for of, this guy's got to make it for his child.
spk_0
We've got to find out, isn't a boy or a girl?
spk_0
And I'm such a digger. I thought it was a goner because that's how fate sometimes works.
spk_0
It kind of just kicks you in the balls and moves on.
spk_0
So I like to scene with Antonio and Lou when they're talking and Antonio's like, can I get an extra shift?
spk_0
You know, but if you have too many, I know there's a lot of people, but whatever you can do.
spk_0
And Lou Diamond recognizes or probably has a lot of respect and friendship with Antonio because he's like, no, you got it.
spk_0
Whatever you want.
spk_0
And I'm thinking, oh, if you would have only taken the day off.
spk_0
Well, the great thing about that specific scene was that it establishes the hierarchy that Lou is kind of the boss at this point.
spk_0
We don't know if he's a foreman or what? He's the boss and he's a nice guy.
spk_0
He actually cares about, he's like, yeah, sure, you're in. No problem. No argument. No, whatever you are in.
spk_0
Yeah, it's a very least he's a decision maker.
spk_0
Sure. Absolutely.
spk_0
And then we cut to the next day and everyone's getting ready for work.
spk_0
And this is the bit where we get Lou Diamond with the glass.
spk_0
Well, before that, at that party scene, I loved how everybody was trying to talk the father to be into not going into mining.
spk_0
Go do this job, go do that job. But don't go down there. I feel like this is just amazing fuel for the rest of his life of his wife being right every single time.
spk_0
Oh, there you go. But aren't but lives are always right. So he is going to hold that against him the rest of his life.
spk_0
Now she's got that card. Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely.
spk_0
We cut to the next morning and getting on the truck.
spk_0
Yeah, I was going to the glass. Right.
spk_0
So we see this piece of glass and Lou Diamond is the mayor and he's in his boss's office.
spk_0
And the boss is like, why are you showing me this? I don't give a fuck and lose like the mountain shifting.
spk_0
I mean, this is proof. It's not safe. We should, you know, not do this.
spk_0
And the boss is like, I don't got a fuck if it's safe or not. You're going down there.
spk_0
Oh, and your code has gone up. If you have a problem with that, there's the door. You can fuck off.
spk_0
For me, it's obvious that the, you know, Don cared about his, you know, his employees cared about his workers.
spk_0
And really wanted to stand up to the boss, but I kept thinking he's just like all of them.
spk_0
He knows that if he stands up, he's not only when he'd be blackballed for mining, he's going to lose his job,
spk_0
lose his income and not be able to take care of his family. So he's kind of stuck in the middle.
spk_0
The only thing he can hope for is try to make the best of it and watch the backs of his miners.
spk_0
Exactly. Yeah. Just eat what's on your plate. Yeah.
spk_0
And the fact, I don't think he ever, I mean, maybe it wasn't real life either, but he never even mentioned to the guys your code has gone up.
spk_0
Yeah, no, yeah, that was kind of a plot point that was thrown in and then I'm not sure for what reason because it.
spk_0
I mean, the story's about them, right? Okay, but it's fuel. It's, yeah, it's true.
spk_0
It's fuel for he stuck between a rock and a hard place, if you will.
spk_0
It shows us the boss. The boss really doesn't care about employees.
spk_0
And that's the corporate. It's, it's like, you know, no matter what you're going to do what I say, because this is what I'm telling you and I'm your boss, right?
spk_0
Period. Yeah. Agreed.
spk_0
So the very first day, that's what I wrote is that corporate greed versus safety.
spk_0
And it's all about the gold and the numbers and the money, which is the other thing I thought about too is this is a gold mine that they're pulling so much gold
spk_0
out of, you know, all these people are so poor. Yeah.
spk_0
Who's making all this money, that corporation is making all this money off of these poor miners.
spk_0
Yeah, the shareholders, all of them. It's absolutely. It's the culture.
spk_0
Yeah. I mean, like they said at one point, that one piece of that gold rock could have paid for colleges, our kids college education.
spk_0
Yeah. Yeah.
spk_0
And so as day one is going on, we're getting ready to go down into the cave and they get into the truck and we meet the Bolivian character and everyone's giving them shit.
spk_0
What do you guys think of the Elvis character?
spk_0
Oh, I wanted to say something about that. You still can.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
You know, when the party started and Elvis was there and I'm like, you know what?
spk_0
Elvis transcends everywhere. He is everywhere. Alphas is.
spk_0
Yeah. Yeah.
spk_0
And then after you discuss that, I actually have a trivia question for you all from fucking fire away, cousin.
spk_0
Okay. Here's the trivia question.
spk_0
So do you all remember how much the gold is announced? How much they quoted the gold to be announced?
spk_0
1500? Is it pure gold or oh, oh, it's from the movie bud from the movie and said they said the golden copper is worth $1200 and ounce.
spk_0
Yeah, I was fucking close. I said 1500 definitely in the ballpark.
spk_0
Yeah. Can I get partial credit for that?
spk_0
Sure.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
Regarding the Elvis character, you know, we talk about sensationalization in this movie.
spk_0
That's how he actually was. In fact, they sent him down like one of the things he requested is he wanted Elvis music while he was down stuck in the cave.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
And even at the end when they do the whole.
spk_0
A more or the here are the real guys. I mean, he says Elvis. So yeah, I get that.
spk_0
I would I liked about this bit or what?
spk_0
What caught my attention about this bit was I'm thinking of myself as they're driving down and the camera pulls back and we can see all the layers and how big and massive this job actually is.
spk_0
Is when the Bolivian is kind of freaking out and being uneasy in the truck and he looks over at Antonio and goes how much longer in Antonio says about an hour.
spk_0
Drop an aduse. They had mentioned at some point and it was a little bit later, but that buying had been used and been dug for over a hundred years.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
A hundred years deep that it was.
spk_0
Could you imagine having to drive down a cave for an hour, which means that don't mess with your head at all.
spk_0
That which means to get out.
spk_0
You got to drive another hour.
spk_0
Yeah. So that's a well, imagine if the truck breaks down or the mine collapses.
spk_0
Yeah, I guess there is that.
spk_0
And so we get down to the mine and everybody's getting ready to work and they're going to their different positions and you have Antonio and the Bolivian working together and then you have all the other guys and you see the drills and the jackhammers and
spk_0
and then fucking the mine explodes.
spk_0
Obviously they wanted to keep the movie moving, but I did appreciate that we didn't have to wait long to get them trapped.
spk_0
If that makes sense.
spk_0
Sure. I could have easily seen this movie being like two and a half hours or wanting to extend the subplots and the other stories.
spk_0
But I think the filmmakers, especially the director did a fantastic job of keeping us at a good pace.
spk_0
Wasn't too fast. Wasn't too slow.
spk_0
And for me, it kept me engaged the entire time.
spk_0
So I think the reason why we're able to get away with that style of storytelling is because everybody makes it out alive.
spk_0
If somebody doesn't make it out alive, then we invest ourselves into characters a little bit deeper, a little bit richer.
spk_0
So that way the payoff at the end when they die, right, since everybody lives, you don't necessarily have to invest as much.
spk_0
Exactly. I agree.
spk_0
And as they're working, Lou Diamond notices a bunch of other mirrors of broke and he starts thinking, oh fuck, right?
spk_0
And then what did you guys think of the actual mind exploding and just that whole sequence?
spk_0
It was good. I thought it was very well done. It felt like an actual cave in.
spk_0
Yeah. And the fact that it takes time, you know, it's going on and on.
spk_0
It's like, when is it going to stop?
spk_0
I did like how they really made a point to tell us that some of the miners thought, let's go up.
spk_0
But the season and the experience like Lou Diamond, film developers says, no, no, no, we have to get down to that refuge. That's the place we have to go.
spk_0
Yeah, because it's falling down. So they knew.
spk_0
Exactly. No, I'm just saying it's, you know, because again, Lou Diamond Phillips knew that this was, this was going to collapse.
spk_0
Like he already knew it. The writing was on the wall when he went to the boss's office. He just knew once it started going down.
spk_0
That's where he had to be. Only a matter of time.
spk_0
Yeah. Take his men. Yeah. So he kind of, I think, had a plan in mind.
spk_0
I was afraid that they were all going to just die right away.
spk_0
Yeah. When the, because I kept thinking, how in the hell did they really survive when all of that mountain was coming down?
spk_0
Yeah. What made it a shorter movie?
spk_0
I forgot to ask, ladies, you've seen this movie before. Yes.
spk_0
Yes. But I did forget a lot of stuff that happened.
spk_0
So it had been a while.
spk_0
I had seen the movie. I forgot that I had seen the movie until I was watching it halfway.
spk_0
And then I go, yeah, I saw this movie. But then I also do remember, unlike you, the actual event when it happened being on the news and watching the news.
spk_0
Yeah. Yeah.
spk_0
And then as everything's collapsing, the final shot of the catastrophe is a wide shot from outside.
spk_0
And then we see the big smoke and everything coming outside. And people are like, what the fuck?
spk_0
I felt like it was like a door slamming. Yeah. Yeah. Very much so.
spk_0
When it collapsed, think God those two got out because the company itself wanted to sell it off and not say anything.
spk_0
Exactly. But the two that got into the, no comment. Yeah. Yeah. That was an important point.
spk_0
Very important that they got out to tell the story and that to get people to rescue them.
spk_0
Because I think if they didn't do that, it would have been a cover up. And they were tied.
spk_0
Because one of the things that they say when they're talking on the phone is they're zooming away is we got to tell the media.
spk_0
Yeah. Yeah. We got to get somebody down here.
spk_0
We got to shed some help.
spk_0
Shed some light on this immediately.
spk_0
But what's crazy is that the way the families found out what's watching the news story.
spk_0
They weren't even alerted that anything had happened beforehand.
spk_0
Yeah. Yeah. For sure. For sure.
spk_0
And then when we cut back into the cave, everything's black and we hear Antonio breathing.
spk_0
And we start to see the survivors come out.
spk_0
And for me, the first thing that I thought of was alive.
spk_0
Did you guys ever see a live about the plane crash and on the Andes?
spk_0
No, I did not. Oh, listen. Did you like it?
spk_0
Oh, I fucking loved it. Listeners alive. Please. And thank you.
spk_0
One of my initial thoughts is because the car was wrecked, the Jeep or whatever they were in the truck was turned over.
spk_0
I thought they were going to have some serious injuries to deal with, especially when they got that medical kit and there was no medicine.
spk_0
I thought there's a way that some of the people are probably going to end up dying or losing limbs or...
spk_0
In one of the first shots they show us is the guy who's going to retire and his head broken open and he's all fucked up.
spk_0
And I'm thinking, yeah, no, he only had two weeks.
spk_0
Yep. Yep.
spk_0
Which turned into 69 days.
spk_0
But there you go.
spk_0
So then we start seeing a little bit of K.
spk_0
You get that impression, that confusion of, okay, now what happens now?
spk_0
What do they do now?
spk_0
My first thought was go throughout all the cave.
spk_0
You got to grab all the medical supplies.
spk_0
You got to gather all the food. You got to check out your water supplies.
spk_0
You got to get all the lighting and everything figured out.
spk_0
And that's pretty much I think kind of how it went.
spk_0
Yeah. And as this is happening and the families are finding out and now it's on the news,
spk_0
the families show up and the guards are like, fuck off.
spk_0
You know, you can't come in to sat in the other blah, blah, blah.
spk_0
And it's starting to look like nobody's lifting a finger to do anything.
spk_0
That's exactly what it looks like.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
And then when it went to the president, one of the staff, which kind of irked me,
spk_0
was the woman who basically said, it's a private own mind.
spk_0
It's not our government responsibility.
spk_0
We don't have to do anything.
spk_0
And then the chief of engineering, the gentleman came up and said, we have to do their lives basically.
spk_0
And so she could have talked to the president to do nothing.
spk_0
They weren't responsible financially or anything.
spk_0
Yeah. Well, the crazy thought that I had too was they had no way of telling
spk_0
whether those miners were still alive or dead, how much the actual mine caved in.
spk_0
But they did know, I think, from the company, they had three days of food in there,
spk_0
which actually turned out to be two days of food, but they had supposedly three days of food.
spk_0
So you're thinking they're going to do it, look for them for three days and then they're done.
spk_0
They're not probably going to keep looking for them.
spk_0
And so as they're down there, they're thinking, what do we do?
spk_0
What do we do?
spk_0
You got to go to the refuge.
spk_0
And so they make it down to the refuge.
spk_0
Now you got to know, are they going to work together or is someone going to take power?
spk_0
Or like, I thought, first thing someone's going to do is they're going after that food.
spk_0
And they're going to basically eat up all that food, which we have Dario, who's, you know, the alcoholic.
spk_0
First thing he does is beeline for the food because he's hungry.
spk_0
I have a question for you all.
spk_0
So what did you think of the effect of the total darkness for that, the scene when it's all of a sudden it's dark?
spk_0
I think when filmmakers show you a black screen and just give you audio, it's uncomfortable.
spk_0
And you, for me, and because I've watched so many movies, I'm ready for that pop of light or whatever or the chalk.
spk_0
But I like when filmmakers do that because you have to use this, and listen as I'm pointing to my head, to kind of visualize what's going on.
spk_0
Right.
spk_0
And as a filmmaker myself, I've always said less is more.
spk_0
And I think the black screen accomplishes that.
spk_0
Yeah, I agree with you. I always like the black screen and the heavy breathing.
spk_0
Yeah, he does.
spk_0
Guys.
spk_0
Video communications allow the miners to see their families for the first time in weeks.
spk_0
Boosting morale.
spk_0
As plans for extraction take shape, engineers prepare a capsule system that could bring each miner up one by one.
spk_0
The stakes are immense. The world is watching. And any failure would be a televised tragedy.
spk_0
One thing that we haven't really talked about was as we're learning about each of these characters,
spk_0
their stories are developing. Like you have that one guy from the office. I can never remember his name.
spk_0
Oh, yeah, yeah. Nunes.
spk_0
Nunes. He's got, you know, his wife and her drama with the mistress, which is kind of almost felt like a little bit of comic relief in this movie.
spk_0
Just seeing the two women dealing with each other and hating on each other.
spk_0
And then sometimes they're leaning on each other. And it's just very strange.
spk_0
You've got Dario and a sister who's obviously estranged from.
spk_0
I thought it was because of his alcoholism and everything, but apparently there was more to that story.
spk_0
You've got the father to be basically, you know, we knew right away his baby is going to be born while he's trapped in there.
spk_0
You've got Mario just wanting to get back to his family and put into this leadership role that whether he wants it or not.
spk_0
But then, you know, given into temptations, things like that, you've got each of these characters with different stories.
spk_0
Was there any specific storyline that you were drawn to of these characters?
spk_0
Well, I thought it was very comical.
spk_0
The gentleman who had the mistress and the wife because he was very fugly.
spk_0
And I thought to myself, you know what? This guy is kind of a joke.
spk_0
But he had him and that's what the other guys were teasing him about a lot.
spk_0
You know, the other miners were like, how did you, how did you do that?
spk_0
Even for me, it's fun for you to do it, right?
spk_0
Your next door neighbor basically, why would you be screwing her or one, you know, go outside the area.
spk_0
But, you know, I just thought that was pretty funny.
spk_0
Well, I like most of the characters, but I felt really bad for the Bavarian Bavarian Bavillion.
spk_0
Bavillion.
spk_0
Bavarian.
spk_0
Bavarian. He's not a waffle.
spk_0
But she's still hungry.
spk_0
Or drunk. One of the two.
spk_0
I felt really bad for him.
spk_0
You know, and then finally he did become one of the brothers and they finally took him in.
spk_0
And I guess everybody tastes like chicken now.
spk_0
Yeah, I guess so. I guess so.
spk_0
For me, I think I will go with Mario.
spk_0
I liked his story arc because he was the, he was the leader that didn't want to be a leader.
spk_0
The reluctant leader.
spk_0
Yeah. And he stepped up and even when they all turned on him, which we'll get to, he handled that very well.
spk_0
And just his whole story arc of, I gotta get home and see my family.
spk_0
I mean, that, that resonates and that would, and that's a strong, that's a strong reason to survive for your family.
spk_0
So I really liked his, his story arc.
spk_0
For me, I think it was the older guy who had two weeks to retire because I was so focused on him a lot of up.
spk_0
Is he the one that's going to, you know, basically make the sacrifice play?
spk_0
Is he going to make it his two weeks?
spk_0
And it felt to me almost like he resolved his storyline with one of the best lines in the movie when he basically said, I quit.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Oh, so good.
spk_0
Yeah, yeah, that was, that was a wonderful moment.
spk_0
Absolutely.
spk_0
Absolutely.
spk_0
So they're down there doing their thing.
spk_0
They find the food.
spk_0
They have to divvy it up.
spk_0
They have to, they don't have, they have no idea how long they're going to be down there.
spk_0
And Lou Diamonds like, this is what we need to do.
spk_0
And Antonio says, no, there's ladders.
spk_0
We got to go find the ladders.
spk_0
And he tells the Bolivian to come with him because Antonio is smart.
spk_0
Let's separate him from the group, right?
spk_0
Well, and he's always, he's always shown kindness to the Bolivian.
spk_0
Correct.
spk_0
Agreed.
spk_0
And they go look for the ladders and then they find out that as they're climbing up the ladders that that ladder ain't finished.
spk_0
And I remember thinking, what the fuck?
spk_0
Right?
spk_0
Totally.
spk_0
Who knows how long they were climbing, they may have said it and I was half asleep.
spk_0
But as soon as they get there and Antonio starts putting his hand on the wall, I think of myself, now what the fuck are they going to do?
spk_0
Right?
spk_0
Because early on when they go in, they say, is this the only way in?
spk_0
And they go, yep, and it's the only way out.
spk_0
So they should have done what they did in Thunderbolts and go back to back.
spk_0
Fuck off.
spk_0
I thought the same fucking thing.
spk_0
You know what would have been cool had they done this cinematically because he has that top rung in his hand that is broken off.
spk_0
What does he do with that top rung?
spk_0
Wouldn't it have been cool if he just dropped it and then we wait to hear it clang to see how far they were to see how far they were that would have been cool.
spk_0
Yeah, they would have added some high drama.
spk_0
But for all we know, we they climbed up two feet or so.
spk_0
But point is ladders cut off, they got to go back to the refuge, they find the food and now they got a divvy at all up.
spk_0
One of the issues I had with this movie is it seemed to struggle building tension.
spk_0
I never really felt a heightened tension that I kind of need from some of these kind of movies, these trapped movies.
spk_0
And for me, you know, you think you'd have tension where they're climbing up the ladder and they get all the way up and the disappointment of not having to let it complete.
spk_0
But my initial thought was that way is not going to work because we still have like an hour left in the movie where we still have 40 minutes in the movie.
spk_0
They're not getting out that way, they're not getting the surface that way.
spk_0
So I knew it was coming. Is that makes sense?
spk_0
Yeah, no, you kind of have to expect that for sure.
spk_0
But as far as it building tension, I thought this movie was pretty tense in certain parts and I thought they did a really good job.
spk_0
Because tension and pacing are very important to go together.
spk_0
And if you screw one up, it can throw everything off and I thought it was very well paced.
spk_0
But I understand what you're saying.
spk_0
What do you think of the level of tension in this movie, Ken?
spk_0
I thought that the tension worked well.
spk_0
I thought that I have no idea who's making it out.
spk_0
Obviously, somebody has to make it up because somebody wrote a book about it.
spk_0
Word.
spk_0
And so with that, somebody's getting out and who knows what that's going to look like and how that's going to play out.
spk_0
And I thought it's very possible that the ladder might have gotten them to the surface.
spk_0
But it collapses or breaks or there's a cave in and they can't get back down.
spk_0
But they make it out and say, hey, we're still alive down there.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
So I thought it was a real possibility that he could have.
spk_0
And for me, not knowing the story and never seeing the movie, I mean, it was all kind of tense for me.
spk_0
Did you guys feel the tension in this movie?
spk_0
Well, before he even went to the ladder, Lou Diamond basically was like, this is where we're going to be in the shelter.
spk_0
And then we got to have a plan here.
spk_0
And Antonio was like, no, we're not going to stay here.
spk_0
I mean, he had to make sure that there was no way out.
spk_0
And that's when he went to search and climbed the ladder.
spk_0
Like he already was like, I'm not giving up.
spk_0
I'm not going to just sit here in this hole in this refuge area and in my life, right?
spk_0
So he wanted to find that.
spk_0
He had that hope.
spk_0
And that's another thing about him.
spk_0
All through the movie, he kept the hope.
spk_0
Here's something that I had to question.
spk_0
Lou Diamond's character tried to talk Mario into out of going to ladders.
spk_0
He knew that this company was doing shitty things.
spk_0
I wonder did he know those ladders were missing?
spk_0
Yes, that's what I was commenting about at the beginning.
spk_0
Yeah, that he knew.
spk_0
And that's why he didn't even bring up the ladders.
spk_0
And wasn't he the person that said at one point down there, do you think the owners are going to spend that kind of money?
spk_0
You know, when they were didn't have very much food and they didn't have anything.
spk_0
And the ladders weren't completed.
spk_0
So yeah, he knew.
spk_0
And I think that's why he's had such a hard time at the end because he knew all that and he could have prevented it.
spk_0
But thank God they're all alive.
spk_0
Agreed.
spk_0
For me, he couldn't have prevented it.
spk_0
He didn't have the resources.
spk_0
He didn't have the money.
spk_0
He couldn't stand up to him.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Well, that's what I mean.
spk_0
Like he could, if he would have been a different type of person, he could have notified the news about what was going on at the mine before all that happened.
spk_0
Lose his job.
spk_0
Yeah, he could would have lost his job.
spk_0
But maybe, yeah, I know anonymous whistleblower.
spk_0
I don't know, but you know, maybe government standards, it's bureaucratic, bureaucratic red tape that goes nowhere.
spk_0
Well, this is why I think he carries so much guilt throughout the movie.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Because he could have.
spk_0
And he could have said my team, we're not going in today.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
When he went into the office and showed him that piece of glass, he could have said, we are not going in today until you fix this.
spk_0
Well, at the very least, he knows it's a ticking time bomb.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
One of the things I thought this movie did actually really well was to build up the drama in the movie and the...
spk_0
I wouldn't say suspense, but you know, the ideas of just, you know, when Lou Diamond Phillips gives up and he's like, I'm done, we're dead.
spk_0
And especially what really moved me was that 16th to 17th day when the food ran out and they're all just basically ready to go to sleep.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
And that to me, that's something that this movie did, fantastic building up that feeling within the viewer.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
That's the low point of the movie.
spk_0
The drill missed and they realized they're fucked.
spk_0
And then we also get that from up top when they're talking and they said, you know, it took us to this point.
spk_0
There's no way that they're going to survive if we try and drill again.
spk_0
Right.
spk_0
Because we up top, the government calls in the attendrals and they calculate where they think they are.
spk_0
And we're told it's a 1% chance.
spk_0
Yep.
spk_0
And I like these drill bits and this one reminded me of Armageddon because they drilled the asteroid.
spk_0
But they bring in these 10 drills, they start drilling and down below in the refuge, they're having their day and things are bleak and it absolutely fucking sucks.
spk_0
And then they hear the drill.
spk_0
And I think the biggest...
spk_0
Okay, I think one of the biggest kick in the balls in this movie is when the drill misses and Mario looks over to everyone and says, it's below us.
spk_0
Oh, this close.
spk_0
And can you imagine what it feels like to be up top going, I mean, you could be this much off, but something says drill over here the other way and you still miss them again.
spk_0
So...
spk_0
Well, the biggest...
spk_0
It was fucking tough.
spk_0
The biggest issue is that as they're drilling, the drills are curving in, you know, over time, they automatically curve.
spk_0
So even if they are right over the ref, so the odds of actually hitting the refuge is very difficult because of the way these drills will bend as they go.
spk_0
And the rock density that they encounter.
spk_0
Exactly.
spk_0
So being an oil and gas all my life working there, directional drilling, I think is another aspect where it was the beginning of directional drilling.
spk_0
Where they, as engineers, they would monitor and see where it's going down and how to turn it lateral, right?
spk_0
And so I think this movie showed that as, you know, they weren't professional.
spk_0
They didn't have the development of the whole directional drilling at that time, but they were close.
spk_0
And that's one of the reasons too that, hey, people can do this.
spk_0
And the drill bit could go this way.
spk_0
It can go horizontal.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
So that is where the light bulb came on and somebody said, it was Maria.
spk_0
It was the, another lady.
spk_0
Aim to miss.
spk_0
And that came on.
spk_0
And then, okay, I have to go back because I actually had the right answer that said camp hope right here.
spk_0
And I didn't look at my notes.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
So on of that case, she wins.
spk_0
But that wasn't the five point question.
spk_0
No, but I actually had the answer before we had the question that should count for something.
spk_0
It does count.
spk_0
You've been, actually, it's expected because you've been on the show.
spk_0
You know how it works.
spk_0
Had you not written it down, I would have been more disappointed.
spk_0
The only one who gets a pass ever is my cousin, Johnny.
spk_0
So, okay, birthday twins.
spk_0
And so, up top, they know they missed.
spk_0
They're absolutely heartbroken and...
spk_0
And I am thinking, what the fuck?
spk_0
So how do they get out of this?
spk_0
How in the world do you conquer this?
spk_0
It is bleak.
spk_0
Yes.
spk_0
And then the minister and Maria are talking.
spk_0
And it's that moment in the movie where someone will say something that the light bulb will go off.
spk_0
I think one of you said that.
spk_0
Yeah, I'll have one on it.
spk_0
Yep.
spk_0
And aim to miss.
spk_0
Well, my initial thought was it took them how many days just to get the drill far enough down that they missed.
spk_0
And now they kind of got to start over.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
But the weird thing is, is on day 16, I think, is when they missed.
spk_0
Yes.
spk_0
On day 17 is when the drill actually came through.
spk_0
So, the first ones took like four or five days or six days to get down there.
spk_0
That other one only took one day.
spk_0
Did they go down the same hole or...
spk_0
Are we sure it was day 17?
spk_0
No, no.
spk_0
So what we have is we have ten drills that are brought in.
spk_0
And those drills, that one drill that made it down there, it took, I guess, to made it eight days.
spk_0
After that, then we have the three different countries come in.
spk_0
And those are the ones that did the powerful drilling.
spk_0
Oh, so they can make it down faster.
spk_0
They have more powerful drills.
spk_0
Yeah, and plus they lost the drill bit broke in the hole.
spk_0
And they had to bring those magnets in to pull the drill bit out of the hole.
spk_0
Well, that was the big hole though, that they were using for Phoenix, is when they drill bit broke, I thought.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
And the magnet.
spk_0
Yeah, but...
spk_0
Which was day 50.
spk_0
Yeah, see, I mean, this, such a long ordeal, right?
spk_0
And now, they aim to miss.
spk_0
They find the miners.
spk_0
The everyone's going crazy happy.
spk_0
They spray paint it.
spk_0
They put a note, they send it up.
spk_0
Word gets out that they're all still alive.
spk_0
What are you for a moment?
spk_0
Oh, and it was so joyful.
spk_0
And then I'm thinking to myself, how the fuck are you going to get 33 people out of here?
spk_0
Right?
spk_0
Right.
spk_0
Same.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
So now, the big countries come in and they have this plan.
spk_0
They're going to...it takes three drills.
spk_0
It's three different companies with three different drilling styles.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
And really what they did was they widen the hole.
spk_0
Exactly.
spk_0
Yeah, because they have to, because they have this plan of sending down a pod that someone gets in.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
So the first drill, I think that they...
spk_0
I think that they're drilled broke and they didn't have anything else.
spk_0
And then it was the third country where they had technical difficulties.
spk_0
Some sort of a hose broke and that said we're out of commission.
spk_0
Which left the Americans the second drilling style.
spk_0
And they are the ones that eventually, as was just pointed out on day 50, they're bit breaks.
spk_0
Did that really happen, you think?
spk_0
Well, what really happened there, they did break a drill down in it.
spk_0
They did not bring in magnets to pull the drill back out.
spk_0
They actually invented a new style of, I guess, some kind of drill thing that went down
spk_0
when in between the cracks around the drill, like an octopus, grabbed onto it and they were able to pull it out.
spk_0
Oh, I like the magnet idea.
spk_0
I think they just simplified it to make it the story go a little faster for that.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
More believable.
spk_0
So they know that there's a broken drill bit and James Brolin, who shows up in this film for five seconds.
spk_0
I kept waiting for him because I saw him, his name listed in the credits.
spk_0
I'm like, when are they bringing in fanos?
spk_0
That's not Thanos.
spk_0
I know.
spk_0
I'm joking.
spk_0
Who is it?
spk_0
It's a cable.
spk_0
It's not cable either.
spk_0
I thought he was...
spk_0
Oh, you're right.
spk_0
That is not James Brolin.
spk_0
No, it is...
spk_0
It's a cario.
spk_0
That's his dad, guys.
spk_0
That's not Josh Brolin.
spk_0
Sorry.
spk_0
And I was thinking, do they shrink or vacuum seal to close?
spk_0
Because that hold and look all that big, right?
spk_0
And now they have shoes and...
spk_0
Yeah, we see them pulling packages out and they are shrink wrapped.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
They had to have been, right?
spk_0
It's like, remember the bank system when they drive up?
spk_0
Yeah, absolutely.
spk_0
spk_0
Well, one of the kind of interesting, I thought was kind of a funny story was, you see them all down there with iPods?
spk_0
Steve Jobs actually did send iPods for every single one of the miners.
spk_0
Except the up top, they thought if we send these down, it's going to start drama, it's going to start fights.
spk_0
So they never sent down the iPods.
spk_0
They kept them up top, figuring, we'll just give it to the miners when they bring them out, which of course they needed it down below.
spk_0
And then they ended up getting stolen.
spk_0
Interesting.
spk_0
There you go.
spk_0
But one does get down and Elvis gets it and he gets his Elvis music and I thought that was a nice touch.
spk_0
And they also comment, they have to send down the NASA liquid food because...
spk_0
The gel.
spk_0
Because they haven't eaten anything in...
spk_0
Starvation.
spk_0
For 80 days or whatever it was, right?
spk_0
And so that's what they used to nourish themselves.
spk_0
And so now there's even more hope.
spk_0
And we've reached the miners.
spk_0
We've given them supplies.
spk_0
We know they're all alive.
spk_0
But the clock is still ticking because this mountain is not stable.
spk_0
When they first got the hold down and then they got all that stuff and everything, for me it felt like this movie just let go of all the tension.
spk_0
There's no more tension because now it's all just how do we get them out of there?
spk_0
And loved ones are talking to each other.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
When they started adding back in, okay now we're on a...
spk_0
We have a certain amount of time because they showed that line moving.
spk_0
Then I thought, okay at least now we're adding more tensions back in.
spk_0
Right.
spk_0
Because the heart is sinking.
spk_0
Yes.
spk_0
And yeah, they have to have...
spk_0
And yeah, the bit where they're talking to the families and they get the supplies, that's our moment as the audience to breathe.
spk_0
Because there's still another fucking challenge in front of us.
spk_0
And it's in fact how the fuck do we get these guys out of here?
spk_0
Weeks stretch into months as the drilling continues.
spk_0
Tempers fray and the psychological toll deepens.
spk_0
Above ground, families refuse to leave the camp, keeping pressure on officials and refusing to let hope die.
spk_0
Finally, after more than two months underground, the escape shaft is ready.
spk_0
One by one, the miners are lifted to the surface in rescue capsules.
spk_0
Each arrival is met with tears, cheers, and international media frenzy.
spk_0
Against the odds, all 33 miners survived and are freed.
spk_0
Their ordeal becomes more than just a rescue.
spk_0
It's a worldwide symbol of endurance, teamwork, and the will to live.
spk_0
Roll credits.
spk_0
So we are trying to figure out what they're going to do.
spk_0
And they say, you know what?
spk_0
Let's build, let's drill a bigger hole.
spk_0
So a capsule fits down there and we'll bring them up.
spk_0
And we got the Americans drilling the hole and then all of a sudden it's like, uh-oh.
spk_0
To drill bit broke, they bring it up.
spk_0
Everyone's happy again.
spk_0
And now the first pod comes down.
spk_0
Who did you guys think was going to be the first one to go?
spk_0
I thought it'd be the old guy.
spk_0
Or I really did think Mr. Vega, whatever the guy who's the father to be.
spk_0
Oh, yeah.
spk_0
I was pondering Mario.
spk_0
So it was I kind of, but then I kind of, I thought Mario would be the last one to leave.
spk_0
That's what then it kind of clicked on me that.
spk_0
But even before that, let's get into a little bit of the drama that starts happening down below in the cave
spk_0
when they all kind of start to lose it a little bit.
spk_0
I mean, we had earlier the fantasy of the food.
spk_0
What do you think of all the food when they were starving?
spk_0
I thought it was a kind of made me hungry.
spk_0
Of course it did.
spk_0
Everything makes you hungry.
spk_0
I think it was put in there to show us that they are thinking about other things.
spk_0
And the hunger is starting to take over and maybe even the despair and delusional.
spk_0
Yes.
spk_0
And being delusional.
spk_0
Well, one of the things that too that they want to build on in kind of sensationalizing this is
spk_0
they were keep referencing that these men are eventually going to turn on each other.
spk_0
They've been trapped in a hundred degree, humid, like sauna basically down there.
spk_0
They can't be smelling that great.
spk_0
A lot of thinking about that a lot.
spk_0
I did like how they pointed out that that little cliff area was where they were doing all their pooping and peeing
spk_0
and there was a hundred years of shit down in that hole.
spk_0
But that's where you dropped the wrong.
spk_0
But the whole idea of that they're going to start turning on each other.
spk_0
And then we have the iPod incident where Elvis thinks the Bolivian stole his iPod and they're ready to kill each other and all that.
spk_0
Apparently in real life none of that happened.
spk_0
They always stuck together as a team.
spk_0
They never had drama over Mario getting a book deal or anything like that.
spk_0
They agreed earlier on to share the rights.
spk_0
It was all or nothing in a book deal in any kind of cause they knew that they were going to be celebrities as soon as they got to the top.
spk_0
But the movie did build a little bit of tension, a little bit of interest in that idea of
spk_0
are they going to turn on each other?
spk_0
Did you feel at any time they might turn on each other?
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
The movie does a good job of building that up especially with the Bolivian.
spk_0
And then all of a sudden the two-timer, Nunez or whatever comes down and says Mario got a book deal.
spk_0
Did you sign it?
spk_0
Blah blah blah.
spk_0
And everybody turns on him and he's like, you know what?
spk_0
Fuck you guys.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
I didn't ask for this fucking job.
spk_0
You just threw it on me.
spk_0
And you know what?
spk_0
You all can go fuck yourselves.
spk_0
And he gets up and he separates himself from the group.
spk_0
I kind of wish.
spk_0
I know they had a lot of story to tell but I wish they'd kind of built more on that tension
spk_0
and done more with that to see how they're living down there.
spk_0
Or do you think they spent enough time on that whole?
spk_0
Cause he goes off and does his own thing but the next time we pretty much see them,
spk_0
they all come back and hug and they're all friends again.
spk_0
I mean there wasn't, I don't feel like there was enough tension there.
spk_0
I don't think you have enough tension in your life.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
I mean that's what it is.
spk_0
I thought it was well.
spk_0
It was well-paced.
spk_0
Right?
spk_0
And that's how we're moving along.
spk_0
Did you guys, what, how did you guys feel?
spk_0
Well, talking about the food incident and they're hallucinating about the food and everything,
spk_0
I just got the picture of the last supper with, you know, that's how to me that they were...
spk_0
Sure.
spk_0
They even called it their last supper.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
And yeah.
spk_0
And so I'm like, oh my gosh, they're hallucinating on this.
spk_0
So it was, that part was emotional for me.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
And then we get the bit where the Bolivian and Elvis getting to a fight and the Bolivian's
spk_0
going to cut his throat and Mario who they all just, they all just kicked out.
spk_0
He makes a dramatic reappearance.
spk_0
And this, this scene actually moved me a little bit because through everything Mario is like,
spk_0
you're going to kill a man over this fucking iPod, you know, knock it off.
spk_0
Right.
spk_0
And it's at that point, I think that even though it didn't really happen, I think at this
spk_0
point, cinematically, the group, they all come together.
spk_0
That was the, the, the, the needed moment for everyone to come together again and hey,
spk_0
they found us.
spk_0
They're working on, we're going to get, we're fucking going to get out of here.
spk_0
Well, one of my thoughts in this point was Elvis is kind of losing it.
spk_0
He thinks the Bolivian stole his iPod.
spk_0
He's wrong.
spk_0
That's the Bolivian's iPod I'm guessing.
spk_0
Well, the way that Mario solves it is he takes the iPod and throws it against the wall
spk_0
and shatters it and all I kept thinking was, that was the Bolivian's iPod.
spk_0
He never did anything wrong and he just broke his iPod.
spk_0
Didn't do anything wrong.
spk_0
He had a fucking knife to the guy's neck.
spk_0
Yeah, but the guy was coming after him.
spk_0
That's not wrong.
spk_0
He was coming after his iPod.
spk_0
So that deserves a knife to the neck?
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Oh, try stealing my iPod.
spk_0
There you go.
spk_0
I'm glad I know where the line is with you, but.
spk_0
But I think if he went a step in from what I'm hearing you say all the time is like,
spk_0
you think that they would have won after each other.
spk_0
Oh, yeah.
spk_0
You might have, right?
spk_0
So he was always the voice of reason.
spk_0
And he was like, you know, basically, this is worth a life.
spk_0
It's not, right?
spk_0
And so he has to bring him back down to, hello, we've survived this long and what the hell
spk_0
are you doing?
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
You know, get the fuck off of him and we're going to be a family no matter what.
spk_0
Bam.
spk_0
But my other thought was it was a little odd that, you know, when they found out originally
spk_0
about Mario's possible book deal and Mario just has fucked you all and storms off.
spk_0
When he comes back, he tells them I didn't take the book deal.
spk_0
I never took the book deal.
spk_0
Why didn't he just say that before he stormed off?
spk_0
Why should he have to exactly exactly?
spk_0
Yeah, because they're all tense and crazy.
spk_0
Oh, who gives a fuck?
spk_0
But they prejudged that he did.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
You know what I mean?
spk_0
They already judged him.
spk_0
And then so if you, so he didn't feel like he needed to jump to his defense right away
spk_0
because a, after everything I've fucking done for you.
spk_0
So yeah, you got to think about something before you actually accuse somebody of doing
spk_0
something because that's just horseshit.
spk_0
I say go to the knife right away.
spk_0
Well, I mean, we know you do.
spk_0
I'm really sorry because at that point I wrote to Joni and said, I don't think he should
spk_0
have taken the book deal.
spk_0
So I automatically thought you thought he did.
spk_0
He and his wife decided to take the book deal and that really upset me.
spk_0
Oh, but it made you feel better when you found out that he didn't, right?
spk_0
Of course.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
I'm just asking.
spk_0
Well, and it also showcases how the media sensationalizes and and fucks things over by
spk_0
putting their own take on it because that's where all of this comes from.
spk_0
We get the the bit about when we have Joni in his mistress bit and then you have the
spk_0
book deal bit and then the whole world blah, blah, blah.
spk_0
And so, you know, that whole bit with the newspaper tells us that, yeah, you know, it's a circus
spk_0
up there.
spk_0
Yeah, for sure.
spk_0
For sure.
spk_0
One of the craziest things and we talked a little bit earlier about corporate greed and
spk_0
all of that was kind of things is the idea, it just really bugged me.
spk_0
The idea that like a book publisher is already trying to make book deals and sign people to
spk_0
book deals before these guys people are actually even out of the cave.
spk_0
We don't even know if they're going to survive at this point.
spk_0
And they're already trying to make deals with these people.
spk_0
Yeah, well, that's that happens every day.
spk_0
Right.
spk_0
And so my last note was corporate greed till the end.
spk_0
There you go.
spk_0
Wait, your for corporate greed?
spk_0
Finally, we can finally agree on something.
spk_0
Cuz I'm so happy about that.
spk_0
I'm not.
spk_0
I said that was my last note was, you know, no matter what, it's corporate greed.
spk_0
Oh, I guess it's in the way you say it.
spk_0
I'm not more corporate greed.
spk_0
And so this pod comes down and they all decide who's going first and I we talked about
spk_0
who we thought it was and I didn't know who did you think would go first?
spk_0
You don't think you ever said.
spk_0
I thought it was, I thought it was going to be Antonio.
spk_0
I did.
spk_0
I always feel like the leader has to go last.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
And so it comes down and they we see much the name, the dad, the new dad to be.
spk_0
He's going to get in it and I'm thinking, okay, cool.
spk_0
And up top they're thinking, well, the mountain's still shifting.
spk_0
A lot could go fucking wrong.
spk_0
And it's all going to depend on this first one.
spk_0
And so the father to be gets in and I think they did a great job of the cost of costrophobic
spk_0
feeling here and just the tension of them bringing them up, bringing them up and it was
spk_0
very well done.
spk_0
And then when he gets to the top, it turns out that his baby girl was already born, his
spk_0
dad is there, everyone's cheering.
spk_0
And I am literally waiting for the, for the pod to drop.
spk_0
They're all not going to make it out.
spk_0
They're because I'm hoping for it.
spk_0
I want it.
spk_0
But, you know, Holly likes to kick you and the balls relentlessly.
spk_0
So I thought for sure if someone was going to go, someone was going to die.
spk_0
I really didn't expect Mario to be the second one up.
spk_0
That was a huge surprise to be honest.
spk_0
Like again, I told you, I thought he would be the last or the second last person.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
So one thing that was left out, which I really wanted to know about, it would have
spk_0
been nice to know how much time is the journey from the refuge to the surface.
spk_0
700 meters.
spk_0
Seven football fields.
spk_0
You are traveling the length of seven football fields.
spk_0
How long is that journey inside that little capsule?
spk_0
And pretty fucking slow, I imagine too.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Is it a winch that's bringing you up?
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Yeah, for sure.
spk_0
And it's got to be a weird feeling because we know that it's not a straight journey,
spk_0
that it's sort of a meandering journey.
spk_0
So, you know, you're going sideways maybe.
spk_0
It's just like, man, that would be fucking weird.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
And so everybody's coming up and you know, it's got a little bit of a montage here
spk_0
in there because we're not going to show all 33 coming up, but they all make it.
spk_0
And I liked Lou Diamond Phillips, you know, his just taking a moment to take it all in
spk_0
and looking at the wall.
spk_0
Again, movies that can do a good job with non-verbal scenes and this movie did it.
spk_0
I thought they did really well with that scene.
spk_0
This is one of my favorite scenes.
spk_0
He turns and he reads the bit and I start wailing up and I'm thinking, oh, fuck, they're
spk_0
going to kill him here.
spk_0
Right?
spk_0
I was halfway thinking the big cave in because we are shown that there is urgency in
spk_0
getting these people up as soon as possible.
spk_0
So I, and in that scene too, I always believed that the leader should go last.
spk_0
And so in that scene for me, Lou got his leadership back no matter what.
spk_0
Oh, agreed.
spk_0
Yeah, absolutely.
spk_0
You know, because so he did that and I would expect the leader to be last.
spk_0
Well, that's what I thought about that too because I thought, you know, why did Mario go second?
spk_0
But I thought Lou's whole job was the safety of his men.
spk_0
And to me, that was a, that symbolizes he was still doing his job.
spk_0
His job was to get those men out of there safely.
spk_0
That's how he took it as well.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
And so can we talk about what really happened?
spk_0
No, what really happened was Lou Diamond's help's character was not the last one out of the cave.
spk_0
He was the second to last one out of the cave.
spk_0
When they sent the initial Phoenix pod down, they sent it with a safety person.
spk_0
And that person came down.
spk_0
He was the first one to go down and tested the whole thing.
spk_0
God out, God everybody strapped in, set up the cage, set up oxygen mass on all of them and sent them up one by one.
spk_0
So it was the rescuer who was the last one out of the tunnel.
spk_0
There were actually six rescuers that went down.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Well, I'm glad they left them out because we didn't need them.
spk_0
I agree.
spk_0
I agree because it was more moving to see that scene with Lou Diamond Phillips.
spk_0
And it also took me a minute to figure out why is everybody wearing sunglasses?
spk_0
Oh, because they were down in a dark place for two fucking months.
spk_0
Spillin' in.
spk_0
Yep.
spk_0
Yep.
spk_0
And so everybody makes it out.
spk_0
It's a happy ending.
spk_0
Maria and Dario reconnect the brother and sister who were estranged.
spk_0
There was a bit where Dario was talking to Mario and Dario Mario.
spk_0
And he says, I've wronged my sister.
spk_0
I just done this now.
spk_0
And when I never talked to her and Mario was like,
spk_0
fucking care, she's your sister.
spk_0
You're gonna go up.
spk_0
You hug her.
spk_0
You tell her you love her.
spk_0
You cry.
spk_0
Yep.
spk_0
And you move on.
spk_0
And a moving scene, right?
spk_0
I mean, there were so many moving scenes in this, I think I cried like four or five times.
spk_0
For me, I thought it was kind of moving that, you know, when he avoided her in the calls,
spk_0
and you know, she'd been waiting to talk to her brother to see her brother and he avoided her.
spk_0
And then when he finally gets to the top, she's fucking with him.
spk_0
She's not there.
spk_0
And he has to go find her to prove.
spk_0
To me, that was him proving he was ready to change.
spk_0
He was actually going and looking for her instead of her always trying to get to him.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Well, a near death experience will do it.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
So that's what I agree on too is like she did to him and wanted him to fill that way that he
spk_0
made her fill when she was sitting there waiting to have that video just to see his face.
spk_0
He was alive.
spk_0
He didn't get that instant gratification of hugging her when he first got out.
spk_0
Yeah, I know.
spk_0
Yeah, I liked that part.
spk_0
Yeah, me too.
spk_0
Great point.
spk_0
Great point.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
So you cried four times.
spk_0
What about everybody else?
spk_0
Because I cried a lot and your mom cried a lot.
spk_0
So I'm just curious.
spk_0
Um, I'd say probably five times.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
For me, it really is daddy daughter moments in a lot of movies when parents get up there
spk_0
and finally see their kids.
spk_0
So when he find, I think his name was Vega, Mr. Vega, he finally got to hold his baby.
spk_0
That was one that I started to kind of tear up and when Mario got to see his daughter,
spk_0
that whole thing got me a little well done.
spk_0
Could you imagine if he had a girl?
spk_0
I'd be.
spk_0
Do you do think he would be the way he is now?
spk_0
I'd be ballin.
spk_0
I don't know.
spk_0
He doesn't have a heart.
spk_0
No, I know.
spk_0
He's such a sucker for daddy daughter moments.
spk_0
So you didn't cry?
spk_0
I didn't cry.
spk_0
Well, oh, okay.
spk_0
Well, there you go.
spk_0
You know why I didn't cry?
spk_0
Why?
spk_0
Because I saw it before.
spk_0
Oh, did you cry the first time?
spk_0
You should ask.
spk_0
Did you cry the first time you saw it?
spk_0
I probably did.
spk_0
I probably cried a lot.
spk_0
All right.
spk_0
But if you're in the day two, you know what?
spk_0
I am a crybaby.
spk_0
But you didn't this time?
spk_0
No.
spk_0
Now, because she knew it was coming.
spk_0
I knew what was happening.
spk_0
Some movies are like that.
spk_0
Right.
spk_0
And then some movies you cry every single time.
spk_0
We throw up in two.
spk_0
End game.
spk_0
Oh, end game.
spk_0
Come on.
spk_0
The list goes on and on.
spk_0
And so with the credits.
spk_0
Last Gordon.
spk_0
Rocky.
spk_0
All right.
spk_0
We're moving.
spk_0
And so we get the end credits with the actual minors having a feast on the beach in black
spk_0
and white.
spk_0
And I thought it was a beautiful moment.
spk_0
Love it.
spk_0
And with James Horner's score coming over the top of it.
spk_0
Perfect way to end the movie.
spk_0
Absolutely.
spk_0
What are you guessing is a sensing?
spk_0
The sensing.
spk_0
I thought is perfect.
spk_0
Excellent.
spk_0
Excellent.
spk_0
What about you?
spk_0
Oh, no heart.
spk_0
I thought it was great.
spk_0
But I have to bring up a point which I thought she would when Lou Diamond Phillips came
spk_0
up and they didn't show anybody to greet him like she cried even more.
spk_0
Like why isn't there anybody there?
spk_0
Why did they not show him get greeted?
spk_0
That's so funny because I never thought about that.
spk_0
I know that I'm thinking about that.
spk_0
I'm kind of laughing.
spk_0
It is odd.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
This movie actually inspired me to do a little research and try to find out what happened
spk_0
to some of these minors afterwards.
spk_0
I guess the company was found not at fault for anything and didn't have to pay the minors
spk_0
any extra money.
spk_0
That's bullshit.
spk_0
It is.
spk_0
They did sue the government for not doing proper inspections and I believe they each got
spk_0
about $48,000.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Yeah, but how long after?
spk_0
It probably took them a while and they had some legal bills and everything.
spk_0
It was like a long fucking time.
spk_0
It was like 10, 15 years.
spk_0
No, well, this is 15 years.
spk_0
They did all agree together.
spk_0
They all did agree together to go in on a book deal.
spk_0
None of them wanted to go separate on it.
spk_0
So they didn't make some money from that.
spk_0
But a few of them did end up suing the book company, the book publisher, because they
spk_0
didn't give them the money that they were promised.
spk_0
One of the nice things I did find out that I read was the production, the movie, did
spk_0
actually hire a lot of them as advisors.
spk_0
In fact, they put Mario in charge of all the extras so they could get paid from the movie
spk_0
besides getting fees for their likeness, isn't everything?
spk_0
Sweet.
spk_0
All right.
spk_0
Well, there you go.
spk_0
And that was the 33.
spk_0
All right.
spk_0
What do you guys think?
spk_0
Are you guys ready to rate this flick?
spk_0
I'm ready to rate this flick.
spk_0
How about you, Denise?
spk_0
Are you ready to rate this flick?
spk_0
I'm ready to rate this flick.
spk_0
How about you, Joni?
spk_0
Are you ready to rate the flick?
spk_0
I'm ready to rate the flick.
spk_0
Are you ready to rate the flick, Jon?
spk_0
Well, unlike the San Jose mining company, I'm actually prepared for this.
spk_0
I think we have a winner.
spk_0
Are you ready to rate it?
spk_0
Winner, winner.
spk_0
Hey, Professor, how do we do our ratings?
spk_0
We do our rating on a scale of 1 to 5 bucks.
spk_0
5 bucks is a movie that we think is cinematic gold.
spk_0
One fuck movies where you get to unwatch it and you're thinking, never watching that again.
spk_0
And what's a zero?
spk_0
A zero fuck movies where you get to unwatching, you turn to your buddy and you're like, oh,
spk_0
for shit's sake, what the hell?
spk_0
Why would you make me watch the eye want two hours and seven minutes of my life back?
spk_0
Or in other words, we just don't give a fuck.
spk_0
Here at the three guys, we allow our guests to pick either they can go first or they can
spk_0
go last.
spk_0
It's up to you, ladies.
spk_0
Would you like to go first or would you like to hear our reviews first?
spk_0
I'd like to hear your reviews first.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
All right.
spk_0
I'll go ahead and go first.
spk_0
They're my cousins.
spk_0
They picked the movie.
spk_0
Whatever.
spk_0
Or would lay.
spk_0
Or lay.
spk_0
It sounds like you're saying orderly.
spk_0
I always feel like I'm saying oral or job.
spk_0
Or that makes sense.
spk_0
I mean, coming from you.
spk_0
Or lay.
spk_0
I was very, very pleasantly surprised by the 33.
spk_0
I am so happy that you guys suggested to watch this.
spk_0
I don't know if I would have ever sat down to watch it.
spk_0
And I'm so glad that I did.
spk_0
The movie was beautifully shot for a movie that takes place interior, mine, the whole
spk_0
movie.
spk_0
I thought it looked fantastic.
spk_0
The outside shots were sweeping the special effects.
spk_0
I bought the characters all moved me, even though we didn't get a lot of time with them.
spk_0
I felt what they were trying to do with it.
spk_0
I got what I needed from the characters just by like John was saying some of the facial
spk_0
expressions, things like that.
spk_0
James Horner does a great job with the score.
spk_0
I would easily recommend this to anyone who likes movies.
spk_0
I would definitely watch this again.
spk_0
And so I'm giving the 33 for solid fucks.
spk_0
You're you there guys.
spk_0
I can go next.
spk_0
All right, fire away.
spk_0
But before I do, Don, would you like to guess my rating?
spk_0
You are going to give the 33 just like me for solid fucks.
spk_0
Final answer.
spk_0
Final answer.
spk_0
The 33 does a great job delivering an inspirational, if not a bit over sensationalized take on the
spk_0
Miners True Story.
spk_0
The film pulls you in, sometimes making you feel stuck underground, other times making
spk_0
you share the desperation of the families above.
spk_0
I wasn't a fan of the sun, turn on Mario.
spk_0
For me, unity would have been a better theme to stick with.
spk_0
Still, the setting is spot on.
spk_0
And Antonio Banderas, Blue Diamond Phillips, and Juliet Benosch really shine.
spk_0
Ending with the Miners in the credits was really a classy touch.
spk_0
Overall, it's an emotional ride that I think is worth watching.
spk_0
Four out of five fucks.
spk_0
Yeah, nailed it.
spk_0
The 33 movie is a compelling story.
spk_0
While I was watching it and seeing how bleak the story arc is, I was tempted several times
spk_0
and I should jump on Wikipedia and see what's going on for real.
spk_0
So that way, you know, I can, I can brace myself for it.
spk_0
But I resisted and I want to just go with the story.
spk_0
Let me see the story the way it's being told to me.
spk_0
And I didn't mind and I assumed that there was going to be some creative liberties
spk_0
taken for a greater dramatic effect.
spk_0
And I was fine with that.
spk_0
I think that the story arc of Mario, Goldburn, and Maria, and Lucho, I really enjoyed
spk_0
those characters.
spk_0
And I am depicting them to be in the best interest of the story that that's probably
spk_0
who they really were at heart.
spk_0
Maybe not exactly true or to the point, but they represent the best of the characters.
spk_0
And it made for a good story for me.
spk_0
And I was very engaged with the story.
spk_0
It being the drill mist and their fucked.
spk_0
How do you resolve this?
spk_0
What is going to happen?
spk_0
There is just, oh my God, they're at the brink of starvation.
spk_0
And we know that they are down there for months.
spk_0
How?
spk_0
What is?
spk_0
So I was hooked.
spk_0
I was definitely hooked.
spk_0
Having James Horner there for the emotional impact, to let it resonate and feel that much
spk_0
more was very rewarding.
spk_0
And I think that this is a good movie where Lou Diamond Phillips really shines.
spk_0
Antonia Banderas, he shines in this as well.
spk_0
So I think that this movie is a good watch.
spk_0
And if I had not had this thrust upon me through the podcast, I would have completely missed
spk_0
this story because I knew nothing of it.
spk_0
And I, you know, it's like, okay, it would be just one of those other choices I know
spk_0
nothing about.
spk_0
So God bless you, ladies, for giving me the opportunity to have this movie to see,
spk_0
to have the experience, to have myself feel what the characters feel, especially the people
spk_0
up on the surface, you know, to have this be such a rich and rewarding ending.
spk_0
You know, I think that it's definitely a four-fuck movie.
spk_0
Four fucks from the professor.
spk_0
All right, ladies.
spk_0
Well, any true story I love to watch because, you know, I don't watch the news.
spk_0
So anything that happens in real life and just knowing, even though it's a movie and
spk_0
they add a lot of things that probably never happened, the whole thing about it was great,
spk_0
you know, that they all survived and that they never lost hope.
spk_0
And for me, every time I see something like that, it brings me to my faith as well because
spk_0
some of this movie is you have to have faith and you have to have trust.
spk_0
And so that, to me, is always the center stone and I loved it.
spk_0
I loved the movie.
spk_0
Thank you for allowing me to be on the podcast.
spk_0
I never thought I wanted to be on the podcast, but this one over here says, you know, it's
spk_0
on your bucket list.
spk_0
I don't have a bucket list, but I'm glad I'm here.
spk_0
Four fucking fucks.
spk_0
Four fucking fucks from cousin, Joni.
spk_0
I love it.
spk_0
Thank you, cousin.
spk_0
And you know, Joni really did pick the movie.
spk_0
She had another movie in mind called Roma.
spk_0
So I watched that first and I liked that movie.
spk_0
This movie, again, I'm with Joni too.
spk_0
I like true stories and biographies all that.
spk_0
So and what also resonates with me is our paternal grandfather was a minor, but he was
spk_0
a coal minor.
spk_0
And so when they made that comment in the movie about it,
spk_0
it took a hundred years to dig this deep and do all that.
spk_0
I kept thinking in the olden, you know, a hundred years and how did they start with picks
spk_0
and shovels and all of a sudden, and then they graduate to these big drills and all of that.
spk_0
But so a hundred years that mountain took to fall apart.
spk_0
And so it was a moving, touching movie for me on a personal level and and I'm glad that Joni's
spk_0
in mining or oil and all of that because she helped explain that as we were watching about
spk_0
the drills and she knew a lot about the drills.
spk_0
So thank you, sister.
spk_0
What, what rating did you give him?
spk_0
Of course.
spk_0
Four.
spk_0
Four fucks from cousin Denise.
spk_0
So unanimously, it's four solid fucks all the way around.
spk_0
With four fucks from the professor, four fucks from the comic guy and four fucks from me.
spk_0
Guess what that gives an average of three point seven five.
spk_0
Yes.
spk_0
And you teach math.
spk_0
It's only fourth grade math.
spk_0
He math's real good.
spk_0
Gives it an average of four fucks, which now puts it in the 13th spot tied with clerks,
spk_0
two, zombie land dodgeball, the thing, edgy tomorrow, the Batman tombstone,
spk_0
V for vendetta and JoJo rabbit.
spk_0
It is slightly better than from dust till dawn, the descent moon rice kingdom,
spk_0
the suicide squad, happy Gilmore the night before Christmas, arrival, super eight step brothers,
spk_0
and Rambo first blood part two.
spk_0
And it is slightly worse than the Sandlot meet the parents, Spider-Man, no way home.
spk_0
Violent night, the fifth element, big fish, Jermonji, welcome to the jungle and clerks three.
spk_0
All right, that is going to wrap it up for this episode of three guys in a flick.
spk_0

spk_0
Just found y'all three weeks ago.
spk_0
And you've made work so much easier.
spk_0
And then we have one from Ginny H who says,
spk_0
just found you, love the detail and chemistry.
spk_0
Great reviews for Atonement and Fantastic Mr. Fox.
spk_0
I'll keep listening.
spk_0
Thank you, Ginny, for the great comments and, you know,
spk_0
validating our Atonement episode, comic book guy.
spk_0
And both smoke up your ass for Fantastic Mr. Fox.
spk_0
Oh no, Fantastic Mr. Fox is a great movie.
spk_0
So Ginny knows what she's talking about.
spk_0
And thank you, Jared, for the comments.
spk_0
We really appreciate it.
spk_0
I also want to thank anyone who listens

spk_0
We're here for the real talk.
spk_0
No time for the tricks.
spk_0
Don as the captain's doing us right.
spk_0
Can drop knowledge and light.
spk_0
John, with the comics, bring in the hype.
spk_0
From the court, the path to be observed.
spk_0
We break it down, make sure you're heard.
spk_0
Passing for the screen.
spk_0
We write a die about movies.
spk_0
You know, we always give a fuck.
spk_0
No lie.
spk_0
I like that.
spk_0
However.
spk_0
And also, we are all alive.

Why do you talk so low when you're on the podcast?
spk_0
Because in real life, I can hear you from across the street.
spk_0
Exactly.
spk_0
You know, I think what it is is you're not used to this.
spk_0
That any?
spk_0
Oh.
spk_0
Oh.
spk_0
Oh, look at how red the professor is getting.
spk_0
This is going to be so much fun.
spk_0
It's OK.
spk_0
You can hold it with both hands.
spk_0
You don't have to marry.
spk_0
Sometimes you have to.
spk_0
You don't have to marry it.
spk_0
We might have more bloopers later.
spk_0
Oh, believe me.
spk_0
I sort of got to need to spit all over that microphone.
spk_0
I'm going to be so pissed.
spk_0
OK.
spk_0
You don't have to spit on this.
spk_0
I would.
spk_0
I was going to say something that I wanted.
spk_0
OK.
spk_0
Oh, you want to try it?
spk_0
Oh, tell.
spk_0
Yes.
spk_0
I love this idea.
spk_0
Look, I'm holding this.
spk_0
OK, go.
spk_0
Tentley by firm.
spk_0
That's not a rock.
spk_0
That's the heart of the mountain.
spk_0
She finally broke, bitch.
spk_0
Yes, I love it.
spk_0
But we can't add lib the quote.
spk_0
We can add lib everything else I promise.
spk_0
You can't stare at me.
spk_0
Oh, I can't.
spk_0
I didn't mean to stare you.
spk_0
OK.
spk_0
So don't be.
spk_0
I got mic fright.
spk_0
LAUGHTER
spk_0
Deep, dark, deep, dark down.
spk_0
I hecked down dark.
spk_0
What did I say?
spk_0
Deep, dark down.
spk_0
What's the fucking difference?
spk_0
One sounds like a porn movie.
spk_0
The other doesn't.
spk_0
All right.
spk_0
This is our favorite time.
spk_0
You guys can take your headphones off if you want,
spk_0
but you don't have to.
spk_0
I would just like to say it's porn time.
spk_0
That this is being that this is a true story
spk_0
of what could have been a tragic circumstance.
spk_0
I find it very distasteful
spk_0
that we're doing porn names for this movie,
spk_0
but I'm still going to fucking do it.
spk_0
You find it distasteful, but you're still going to do it.
spk_0
What does that say about you?
spk_0
Exactly.
spk_0
No, I'm asking you.
spk_0
What does it say about you?
spk_0
I have no morals.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Sort of.
spk_0
I don't.
spk_0
And to be fair, I...
spk_0
It says this human.
spk_0
Huh?
spk_0
It says this human.
spk_0
Thank you.
spk_0
He likes humor even in the midst of everything else.
spk_0
They survive.
spk_0
So fuck it.
spk_0
Do a porn name.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
And I like porn.
spk_0
There you go.
spk_0
Well, who doesn't?
spk_0
All right.
spk_0
I only have a couple.
spk_0
I've got three.
spk_0
OK.
spk_0
How many you got?
spk_0
I got 33.
spk_0
Oh, damn.
spk_0
Is that true?
spk_0
Or do you got the dirty three?
spk_0
Oh, you fucking dickhead.
spk_0
You took one of mine.
spk_0
I have the thirsty three.
spk_0
Oh, that's a good one.
spk_0
I have the 69.
spk_0
That's good.
spk_0
I have the 33 way.
spk_0
Oh, that's a good two.
spk_0
My last one is the 33 sum.
spk_0
Oh, that's a good one.
spk_0
I like that one.
spk_0
That one might be the winner.
spk_0
I don't know.
spk_0
Dirty three is pretty good, because it's like the dirty dozen,
spk_0
but different.
spk_0
All right.
spk_0
May all of your days and nights be filled with happiness.
spk_0
All right, fuck up, good night.
spk_0
We want to end the base we get to sky.
spk_0
The food in the world, catch the bar.
spk_0
There's three guys in a plate.
spk_0
Keep the passion alive.
spk_0
Fuck that guy.
spk_0
Fuck that guy.
