Hello and welcome to the popcorn junkies. Welcome to this review of...
spk_0
It's a really awkward title. It doesn't, it doesn't roll off the tongue.
spk_0
It doesn't trot off the tongue to me. It doesn't roll off the tongue to me.
spk_0
Oh yeah, you've got it. It's the entire title you've ever got.
spk_0
I've got it. You've got it. It's good.
spk_0
Yeah. Well, I've heard.
spk_0
Which is kind of strange because it's based or it's inspired by a book which has a really cool title called The Vine Land.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
And you've got a mug that says C-U-N-T.
spk_0
I know! I was just...
spk_0
Yeah. I was waiting for you to know it.
spk_0
Could you make your arrival and establish in your position to any more items?
spk_0
No, no, no, no. I'll just wrap it away.
spk_0
If you're listening on podcar, she has a mug that says underneath your tattoos, you're still a mainstream...
spk_0
S-E-E-E.
spk_0
Okay. Oh, yeah. Just popping it into the...
spk_0
You can get the filmic or franchise reference.
spk_0
Spend your things. Spend your things.
spk_0
Okay. Yeah. So this is one battle after another.
spk_0
And as I said, it's based on a book by Thomas Pinchon, Vine Land.
spk_0
Port Thomas Anderson is the director. We are.
spk_0
We've discovered enormous Port Thomas Anderson fans. Let me give you a look. Kind of hit list.
spk_0
Boogie Nights. Magnolia. Punch-grunt love.
spk_0
There will be blood. The master, inherent vice, phantom thread, and licorice pizza.
spk_0
Well, I have learnt more to watch those. Some of those I haven't seen.
spk_0
And inherent vice is another film by him, which I remember seeing, which is so odd,
spk_0
which is also based on a Thomas Pinchon novel. Thomas Pinchon is kind of like one of those...
spk_0
What mad authors, a bit like Hunter's Thompson, who writes,
spk_0
whacked out kind of counterculture, revolutionary kind of weird shit.
spk_0
A red Vine Land, but I was about your age, Maddie.
spk_0
And it was literally so... It made me feel schizophrenic, because I'd take an asset.
spk_0
Which is what this film is a little bit like to.
spk_0
I read it now.
spk_0
So we all saw the trailer before going into the... So we love Port Thomas Anderson.
spk_0
We've got a great cast. We've got Leonardo DiCaprio.
spk_0
Maddie doesn't really like Leonardo DiCaprio.
spk_0
Not really. We've got Beniccio Del Toro.
spk_0
Mark doesn't really like Leonardo DiCaprio.
spk_0
I've got Drunker then almost. Sean Penn, Tiana Taylor, Regina Hall, Chase Infinity.
spk_0
What great name. Two name, but a few. They're the kind of main members of the cast.
spk_0
And we'd all seen the trailer. So going into this film, what did we think we were going to get?
spk_0
Now that we loved his last film, LeCrisp pizza.
spk_0
We've loved things like Conch Drunk Love and they were all we'd loved and also both of those other films.
spk_0
What were we hoping for? Were you excited?
spk_0
Yeah, I was so excited for it. But I also get nervous sometimes, because sometimes, you know,
spk_0
trailers look so awesome stuff and then you see the film, and it's quite...
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Live art.
spk_0
But I mean, I knew it was going to be kind of crazy, whacked out.
spk_0
Very eventful kind of chaotic.
spk_0
Yes.
spk_0
And I almost didn't guarantee to love anything that Leonardo DiCaprio.
spk_0
That's what I was going to say.
spk_0
So it was very, very bad.
spk_0
So I had to crush from about nine.
spk_0
Yeah, like with fast-propagration. Like crimes, killer, stalker crush.
spk_0
Well, I'm pretending I don't know why I knew this.
spk_0
So you've always said that Leonardo DiCaprio at this point.
spk_0
Apart from Hollywood, what was the movie that you really didn't like?
spk_0
I mean, he was good at it. I wanted to put a time in Hollywood.
spk_0
That's right. That's the good thing.
spk_0
It's interesting though, because when I did the trailer reaction, and a number of people underneath my trailer reactions
spk_0
that went for sort of quite, you know, popular said,
spk_0
I'll know these days if Leonardo is attached, I'm not entirely certain it means it's going to be a good film.
spk_0
Which is kind of the opinion my mother has, which is she doesn't always feel is reliable.
spk_0
Well, she's a script.
spk_0
Yeah. She's a script.
spk_0
Yeah, but I disagree. I've been on every single performance he's put in really quite meaningful.
spk_0
I would say there's only been like maybe two films that are a bit like, you know, just pick that.
spk_0
Most of the time long career, that's not bad.
spk_0
But still, this performance is always like.
spk_0
Absolutely.
spk_0
So I was totally sold on going to it by the trailer.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
And the director, he's like, absolutely lovely, Chris Pizza and there's something threads for that.
spk_0
And if we try to see that, it was different, right?
spk_0
That was the other one I should have.
spk_0
Oh, yes, oh God, brilliant.
spk_0
So I love him.
spk_0
But I did have, I had a few reservations from the trailer.
spk_0
Yes, with Leonardo.
spk_0
Oh, right.
spk_0
Because I don't like what I can't bear is a really good actor that over pitches the kind of like comedy.
spk_0
Right.
spk_0
And because within the clip he was a bit fringetic and a bit frantic and I thought, oh, is this going to be one of those?
spk_0
Is somebody's going to be a British humor movie kind of style?
spk_0
Only for a moment that that was sort of, that was my fear.
spk_0
I had no idea how long it was going to be.
spk_0
I didn't tell anyone about it.
spk_0
So that was a good day.
spk_0
And then I was good, bloody believe it when we came out.
spk_0
Yeah, it banks in at two hours, 40 minutes.
spk_0
Don't let that put you off.
spk_0
No, because I didn't tell any of this lot.
spk_0
When we left, we were like, what do I have 40 minutes?
spk_0
Do not let it put you off.
spk_0
Well, I mean, so what were my feelings going in?
spk_0
I was kind of excited.
spk_0
I think there was only one element of this that I was in any way concerned about.
spk_0
It was just Leo, not because I don't like him, not because I don't think he's brilliant.
spk_0
But like you and the trailer, I worried he might be trying to reach up too hard for something.
spk_0
Yeah, but we should have learnt by now that he's always going to be...
spk_0
Yeah, and what?
spk_0
...as I'm here, little fear.
spk_0
And then I've been each of it's so cute that I thought, what if these are the only good things?
spk_0
Yeah, yeah.
spk_0
And so it's, it's, it's billed as a lot of the way they describe it on Wikipedia.
spk_0
An epic dark comedy action thriller.
spk_0
They've basically covered every single bar horror conceivable genre there.
spk_0
But I would argue that this is all those things, but this sits within,
spk_0
I'm just going to do a little bit of filming stuff here.
spk_0
I think it sits within a new genre that's developing since not just this Trump administration,
spk_0
but in an American culture that's pretty paranoid at the moment.
spk_0
And this sits in a new genre of why we're called paranoiac thrillers.
spk_0
And the last one I saw this year was Edmonton, which stars Wacken Phoenix and Pedro Pascal,
spk_0
which not a lot of people kind of were thrilled by it.
spk_0
I thought it was excellent.
spk_0
I thought it was really stressful and intense and would be a fantastic having seen this double bill with this film.
spk_0
So I think there's a real thing going on with filmmakers at American filmmakers,
spk_0
which is exploring inadvertently, because these were all gone into production and being green left before this Trump administration,
spk_0
which are kind of exploring schizophrenia, paranoia.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
So, so yeah, so I mean, I was looking forward to that collision of comedy thriller,
spk_0
and what have you, which surprised us all, I think, the licorice pizza, didn't it?
spk_0
Just how engaging it was.
spk_0
Yeah, but another perfect film.
spk_0
So, the premise, we've kind of got a bunch of revolutionaries.
spk_0
The book, I think, is set in the 80s and flashes back to the 60s,
spk_0
whereas this film is much more set, I think, in the 90s to the early 2000s and flashes back to the 80s.
spk_0
So, plus you have things like mobile phones and shit like that, cropping up and saying.
spk_0
There's a lot of rascals, if that helps anyone, there's a roll of them.
spk_0
But you didn't have mobile phones and shit in me in the book, Fineland.
spk_0
And basically we've got a bunch of kind of revolutionaries, don't we?
spk_0
The film starts in a mission.
spk_0
Oh, so yeah.
spk_0
Oh, let me take the brawler t-shirt on you.
spk_0
Yeah, I get that.
spk_0
I mean, right from the beginning, yeah, I wanted to smash things up and sort of go mad.
spk_0
Do you?
spk_0
The panel.
spk_0
With it on the Taylor, just walking up and down the top on that kind of highway.
spk_0
Yeah, so let's not skip by that hurt entrance.
spk_0
Oh, wow.
spk_0
I'm not out.
spk_0
I'm not out.
spk_0
Not out.
spk_0
Starts with film.
spk_0
Taylor, Taylor, her face is phenomenal.
spk_0
What?
spk_0
What is wrong?
spk_0
The way she moves everything.
spk_0
She is.
spk_0
Yeah, just she's losing all the weight.
spk_0
Yeah, she's got real power, just magnetism.
spk_0
She's like a sculpture.
spk_0
She's like an East up island sculpture in Lumenfall.
spk_0
Yeah, she doesn't know real.
spk_0
Mestemorizing.
spk_0
Mestemorizing.
spk_0
And so you've got her, who's this kind of thrusting character within this bunch of revolutionaries.
spk_0
Also in there is a Lana Hain, who's one of the actress who was in Likrich Pizza.
spk_0
A whole bunch of kind of, you know, I was getting almost a little bit right at the front of this Leo.
spk_0
And then Leonardo's there, kind of a bit hapless.
spk_0
Oh, totally.
spk_0
This is a very unveined performance.
spk_0
Wow.
spk_0
He is clever.
spk_0
He's smart.
spk_0
He's moving into his older.
spk_0
He wants the next 30 years to be able to be with him.
spk_0
And he's not afraid.
spk_0
He's not having face lifts.
spk_0
He's not doing the boat.
spk_0
No.
spk_0
He's lost a bit of weight.
spk_0
I thought he lost a bit of weight.
spk_0
He's lost a bit of weight.
spk_0
Can I just say, were you getting, because this is one of Maddie's favourite films?
spk_0
I was getting fantastic Mr Fox vibes for a minute, a little bit.
spk_0
Wait, for real?
spk_0
Yeah, when he had the thing and he was running along and he was putting bombs in it.
spk_0
There was a little bit of that kind of thing going on.
spk_0
So anyway, so he's the bomber, isn't he?
spk_0
He's the only fire, bombs, like Rocket Man next to him.
spk_0
And the lover of...
spk_0
Of Teyana Taylor's favourite.
spk_0
So yeah, so they do this mission.
spk_0
And quite quickly, we were seeing...
spk_0
What was all about this film?
spk_0
I wasn't expecting it to be so obvious, because it had been greenlit and made before Trump.
spk_0
We were starting to see stuff that was seeing on the news.
spk_0
That was the bit that's true, me.
spk_0
We were in detention.
spk_0
Well, that was the real intention, and we met Sean Penn.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
And it's all about...
spk_0
And insane, first scene.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Which really not good for...
spk_0
Well, he stood to the tension, I felt, didn't he?
spk_0
He really did.
spk_0
He really stood to the tension on command.
spk_0
It took me a few minutes.
spk_0
I didn't take a few minutes, because the scene was only a minute.
spk_0
But I couldn't quite believe what she...
spk_0
When she said what she said to him,
spk_0
I was like, is she actually talking about that?
spk_0
What did you think of that scene?
spk_0
Well, what do you think we feel about it?
spk_0
As women that are putting up all the time with men,
spk_0
it was female and out and every single woman will go, yes!
spk_0
Because he dared to look at her in that list of years away.
spk_0
And she was not having it.
spk_0
We don't want to spoil it for you.
spk_0
No, you may.
spk_0
This can't be a spoiler.
spk_0
You're gonna get a hoooove!
spk_0
I mean, it was shocking.
spk_0
Put it this way, Sean Penn comes out of that scene,
spk_0
and he's left such an indelible mark on you in his just...
spk_0
How would you characterize his...
spk_0
He was doing the same with his face.
spk_0
Yeah, he had loads of light-idiot synchrosis that were just really...
spk_0
Yes.
spk_0
Or were you always doing like a...
spk_0
Yes!
spk_0
I'm gonna do a duet this like...
spk_0
Yes!
spk_0
He had some really creepy moments in himself.
spk_0
You really did?
spk_0
But like Tamanna, is it Tamanna?
spk_0
Tiana.
spk_0
The physicality for now.
spk_0
He was lit from inside with her.
spk_0
He was like shaken with power and megalomania and sadism and...
spk_0
And total repression.
spk_0
I mean, I thought...
spk_0
Essentially, he's the villain in the piece.
spk_0
He's very funny.
spk_0
And he's very funny.
spk_0
But he is all of his repression, which comes out in very funny way,
spk_0
sort of horrible way throughout the film.
spk_0
His repression is literally manifested by the timidness of his talk.
spk_0
He was like, I mean, you're not boy, you're never a boy.
spk_0
He was literally like a toy soldier.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
No, I read that number of times.
spk_0
I thought he's walking like a toy soldier, toy soldier.
spk_0
spk_0
He's just like me.
spk_0
But with such an energy, like you feel like you can destroy anything.
spk_0
So essentially, their radicals, their revolutionaries,
spk_0
they're fighting against the system, they're liberating migrants.
spk_0
There are lots of sex, it's like sexy.
spk_0
But what I like about it, again, every time I thought,
spk_0
oh God, we're going to have to go into graphic sex.
spk_0
No, they're actually with sex and...
spk_0
No.
spk_0
And for me at the moment, that is a massive director's out there.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
We're sick and tired of it.
spk_0
Think creatively and we never had sex, did we?
spk_0
Well, you didn't have to see it, but we certainly knew it.
spk_0
We were.
spk_0
We had to suddenly imply it.
spk_0
It was very sex-wise.
spk_0
We're not so much better than someone.
spk_0
I don't think some of my films don't just imply it anywhere.
spk_0
Yeah, he might actually...
spk_0
Because it's a cheap trip for voyeurism.
spk_0
You know, we're sick and tired of seeing women rage.
spk_0
We're sick and tired of seeing them trust up.
spk_0
Just think of another way.
spk_0
And so put it this way.
spk_0
What's he doing?
spk_0
So you've got a revolutionary group.
spk_0
And without kind of getting into the nuts and bolts
spk_0
the many different missions they do.
spk_0
You know, the latest mission goes wrong.
spk_0
Or one of their missions goes wrong.
spk_0
And essentially, Taylor and Attaler gets caught.
spk_0
And then we have a rack situation and she'll pen in her,
spk_0
have a bit of a thing.
spk_0
And then she becomes a coming dove.
spk_0
It's like a...
spk_0
What's it called when you get a pleat?
spk_0
When you pleat, you get a pleat.
spk_0
A pleat?
spk_0
Yeah, get a pleat.
spk_0
But basically, they say to her,
spk_0
you're not going to go in the slammer for a long time
spk_0
if you give us the names of everyone.
spk_0
And they're in line with the problem,
spk_0
because essentially, she's had a child, isn't she,
spk_0
with Leonardo DiCaprio?
spk_0
What did you think of their romance?
spk_0
I'd have to.
spk_0
It's so nice.
spk_0
spk_0
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
spk_0
Because, again, it threw everything on its head.
spk_0
It's like...
spk_0
This woman would never fancy this man.
spk_0
No.
spk_0
This man wouldn't be able to have sex in the way
spk_0
that this woman wants to do.
spk_0
Everything was like the opposite, wasn't it?
spk_0
spk_0
So I saw I loved it.
spk_0
It was a surprise.
spk_0
Every moment of it was a surprise.
spk_0
Can I just say one of the most wonderful things
spk_0
about this film is every time I think about it,
spk_0
I remember just a tiny scene that the joy of filmmaking
spk_0
in a film with this length is the amount of effort
spk_0
that goes into shooting any scene in a film.
spk_0
I think people underestimate the extraordinary effort
spk_0
that goes into any incidental scene.
spk_0
And there was a moment just, for me,
spk_0
it was a defining feature of Te Anoraly and Leonardo's relationship
spk_0
prior to, basically, she kind of heads off.
spk_0
Was the moment where her mother says to him,
spk_0
you're not up to her?
spk_0
You're not up to her?
spk_0
Just long.
spk_0
It comes from a long line of revolution.
spk_0
Well, there's a great detail.
spk_0
Because, again, you're right for Leo.
spk_0
It just completely emasculated him.
spk_0
It rendered him useless.
spk_0
He kind of left him kind of where to go.
spk_0
And he became the effeminate one in a sense.
spk_0
You know what?
spk_0
He didn't emasculate him.
spk_0
Because he didn't react to it.
spk_0
Yeah, that's true.
spk_0
He was incredibly masculine.
spk_0
And I think I love the fact that we had this stark contrast
spk_0
between the military man and the military men in it
spk_0
that was so mature and so toxic.
spk_0
And you had this slightly buffoon type character
spk_0
that actually had won the girl.
spk_0
And did she did love him?
spk_0
And he did try out various so many different things
spk_0
and it totally buffooned him.
spk_0
So he was actually for me the most masculine
spk_0
and the most bansier boy in the world.
spk_0
Oh, yeah, absolutely.
spk_0
But I love the fact that we just reversed
spk_0
what he would normally expect.
spk_0
I mean, I felt every character was just this.
spk_0
It's a great character.
spk_0
It's an archetype.
spk_0
It's a director's feminist.
spk_0
Yeah, and also a huge shout out for the, I mean, you know,
spk_0
black, lead, black female characters.
spk_0
And it wasn't about sight.
spk_0
But it also wasn't about the fighting for black romance.
spk_0
No.
spk_0
It was incidentally, you know, you have so many powerful black women,
spk_0
specifically.
spk_0
spk_0
And I just thought that was just something
spk_0
that was just incidental, which was good.
spk_0
And we all said it, didn't we?
spk_0
That we never felt we were being hammered a message
spk_0
at any point, right?
spk_0
And when you think about how much the world is at the moment,
spk_0
very much that, isn't it?
spk_0
No, it's a hammering.
spk_0
Virtue signaling.
spk_0
No, zero virtue signaling.
spk_0
When you think what the topics were here, that's quite something.
spk_0
He is.
spk_0
It's just threaded, thankfully.
spk_0
We get to a situation where I loved the scene.
spk_0
So effect, I mean, they have to do some spoilerish stuff.
spk_0
There's a close proximity develops between Sean Penn and Teyana Taylor.
spk_0
That is the absolute crux of the film.
spk_0
Is what happens between them.
spk_0
What hasn't happened between them.
spk_0
And so you have threaded all the way through this film.
spk_0
I think a really, really powerful tension,
spk_0
which really sits with Sean Penn about a dark for boating,
spk_0
but also a dark for boating in him that essentially is the passion
spk_0
he should not speak, which is his love for black women
spk_0
as much as his last, exactly.
spk_0
That scene, he's just from market.
spk_0
Yeah, I mean, he just went up to the open.
spk_0
How could this be?
spk_0
Fucking hell, Leo looks at.
spk_0
But it's a great scene.
spk_0
So, is it any time you see them come together?
spk_0
spk_0
But Sean Penn is so much of a bullshit fucking crazy as well.
spk_0
I had.
spk_0
Leo Lada didn't have the act there.
spk_0
He was probably in the queue.
spk_0
Shit himself.
spk_0
Shitting himself.
spk_0
Sean Penn's got that Dennis Hopper thing about,
spk_0
which is like, where the fuck is he going to go with this?
spk_0
And if he was a sound, if his character was a sound, it would be me.
spk_0
spk_0
And it's kind of like, that's your feeling.
spk_0
The whole time is on the side.
spk_0
It's so like red and rainy all the time.
spk_0
It just feels like he's about to blow in a second.
spk_0
But it's kind of good, because you don't,
spk_0
I would say that you don't fully see him burst in the film at all.
spk_0
No, we don't really.
spk_0
It's a couple of scenes as well.
spk_0
It's a showman's, but I've got to practice some of them.
spk_0
One for you, his eyes need to be throughout.
spk_0
No, he's still got me still.
spk_0
What do you mean?
spk_0
I know what you mean.
spk_0
It's literally, he's like those husbands from Real Housewives of New Jersey,
spk_0
Ritla, but with muscles rather than fat.
spk_0
And even though he's so evil, again, genius actor,
spk_0
there is pity for him from us,
spk_0
from the deadlock of the film.
spk_0
He was totally, totally.
spk_0
He was that evil, which is always the best.
spk_0
But did the horse part of that achieve by his diminutive size?
spk_0
You felt this is a little man's difference.
spk_0
It was what, it was all his subtext.
spk_0
It was what every subtext was, was nuts.
spk_0
I'd love to see the notes on his script.
spk_0
Before we then get into the meat and veg of the film is really Leonardo DiCaprio years
spk_0
later with grown up daughter that he's had with Teyana.
spk_0
And they're sort of historic revolutionary past catches up with them.
spk_0
And essentially the film becomes a dad goes in pursuit of daughter thriller,
spk_0
an arctic thriller.
spk_0
But like you've never seen it.
spk_0
I've never seen it.
spk_0
Don't think.
spk_0
No.
spk_0
That doesn't give you any sense.
spk_0
You actually can't box the documents at any kind of category.
spk_0
No, that's the same thing.
spk_0
And that's why it's kind of difficult.
spk_0
Why we are sort of skuting around a bit with what we were feeling was,
spk_0
with one year ago to have the same surprises that we had.
spk_0
And maybe we do another review of Werver Down the Line,
spk_0
where we all just talk about.
spk_0
Well, I was saying to one of my mates,
spk_0
because when I got back I was at my stream where it's just being like,
spk_0
you know, this new film, you're just going to see it.
spk_0
And they were like, what was it about?
spk_0
And I was like, I don't want to tell you.
spk_0
Because I feel like especially with movie trailers now,
spk_0
it literally spells out the entire film.
spk_0
You could get away with not seeing most movies,
spk_0
because the trailer literally shows you the entire film.
spk_0
Absolutely.
spk_0
Exactly what's going to happen.
spk_0
Show us all the best bits.
spk_0
And these people are like,
spk_0
I'm like, this trailer had great bits in it.
spk_0
But it did in no way showed you all at the first moment.
spk_0
She's in the film.
spk_0
And also gave you no ideas to what actually the film was about.
spk_0
I sat down and I was like,
spk_0
I don't actually know what I'm about to watch.
spk_0
Yes.
spk_0
Well, your mum asked before we went,
spk_0
you said, what's it about?
spk_0
And you quite rightly came into the kitchen said,
spk_0
it's not really that kind of film mum.
spk_0
It can't really, because you can't.
spk_0
It's not like...
spk_0
This is my headline, but it's about a revolution.
spk_0
It's about a revolution.
spk_0
That's the best of the world.
spk_0
That's not a great story.
spk_0
Because the first thing I said when we came out was,
spk_0
what a story.
spk_0
Oh.
spk_0
What an amazing...
spk_0
I mean, I didn't know it was a novel when we were in it.
spk_0
But we watched a novel.
spk_0
You know, like, I, you know, I said all I wanted to read the book,
spk_0
but I didn't need to read the book actually,
spk_0
because I felt like I was taken on something.
spk_0
I'm really pleased you said that.
spk_0
I'm really pleased you said that,
spk_0
because I think there's a strong sort of debate
spk_0
that happens in kind of filmmaking, film discussion,
spk_0
film analysis, which is, you know,
spk_0
is streaming now delivering those epic sweeps of story,
spk_0
immersion, character, complication,
spk_0
but complication doesn't have to be dense and didactic
spk_0
and kind of analytical.
spk_0
And I thought this was one of those rare films,
spk_0
where you have to be a supremely fucking skillful director
spk_0
to keep it coming for as long as it did.
spk_0
Now, what amazes me about this film is the energy of it.
spk_0
And that is energy that is so equally distributed
spk_0
between performance, camera work, soundtrack, edit.
spk_0
It's...
spk_0
It doesn't stop.
spk_0
It gives me goosebumps when I think of the skill set required,
spk_0
like a conductor to keep that going.
spk_0
And it doesn't, and sometimes there's a danger
spk_0
that when a film doesn't pause for breath,
spk_0
and all horror films and all thrillers,
spk_0
they always have those scenes which are kind of recalibrate moments.
spk_0
Let's just pause and let's have some explication,
spk_0
reorientate ourselves and get ready for the next push.
spk_0
This doesn't do that, but it didn't exhaust you.
spk_0
I mean, it was tense.
spk_0
No, but it was really nice.
spk_0
It was really nice.
spk_0
The whole tour of Sansons is always really good at
spk_0
is all it's for any sort of films of his own.
spk_0
It's not easy.
spk_0
That all a bit, they're actually quite overstimulating.
spk_0
Just always a kind of piano like this.
spk_0
Yes, yes, yes.
spk_0
It's very pretty.
spk_0
You've seen some selves already chaotic.
spk_0
Yeah, you're still engaged and you're not...
spk_0
Even though it's created to be kind of overstimulating,
spk_0
you're not overwhelmed by it.
spk_0
It's very true.
spk_0
Yes, you are.
spk_0
It was immediately...
spk_0
It was very true.
spk_0
Yeah, very true.
spk_0
The same as a punch-druck love.
spk_0
I think the whole time in punch-druck love,
spk_0
there is just this weird kind of music playing underneath
spk_0
and sometimes the dialogue is actually quite a little music
spk_0
and you're a bit like,
spk_0
what's actually going on yet.
spk_0
Very true.
spk_0
You're still just...
spk_0
I don't know, it's just...
spk_0
It's just a little bit...
spk_0
We're all still going to know what's happening.
spk_0
We're just still following the story,
spk_0
but though like a million things are happening.
spk_0
I think what you also managed to do that maybe helps that a long is,
spk_0
you are dovetailing between extraordinary...
spk_0
This is very funny.
spk_0
They're extremely funny moments.
spk_0
I'm absolutely laughing that much.
spk_0
I think it has a common sense of that.
spk_0
This is where I think you're so clear.
spk_0
Yes, because there's a man...
spk_0
There's whip.
spk_0
But there is laugh, laughter.
spk_0
There were moments of true horror.
spk_0
There was a death that happens that you're like,
spk_0
fucking hell, no one's safe in this.
spk_0
This is real.
spk_0
You know that wonderful thing when the kind of guardrails are off
spk_0
and they're filming, they're like,
spk_0
oh right, okay, anyone could go at any point here.
spk_0
There are shocking moments.
spk_0
There were frightening moments.
spk_0
There are adrenaline-fueled moments.
spk_0
There are moments weird.
spk_0
It's real love as well.
spk_0
Real love and quiet, too.
spk_0
I'm thinking around the Nietzsche, though.
spk_0
Let's just talk about some of the characters.
spk_0
Let's talk about...
spk_0
We've talked about...
spk_0
Let's talk about the Nietzsche.
spk_0
This was an...
spk_0
Sensei.
spk_0
Try to prevent the force of a performance.
spk_0
Try to get them together.
spk_0
Oh, my favorite.
spk_0
I could watch a whole film just about two minutes.
spk_0
Two characters.
spk_0
I would love to spin off the Nietzsche,
spk_0
a road movie, the digital movie.
spk_0
Yeah, it was a symphony of perfection.
spk_0
And Beniccio was the coolest character you've ever seen.
spk_0
Yeah, it was great, wasn't it?
spk_0
He was a...
spk_0
Ocean Waves.
spk_0
Ocean Waves.
spk_0
spk_0
What was he, he says when he gives him the gun and he says...
spk_0
Courage.
spk_0
Courage.
spk_0
spk_0
Courage.
spk_0
He wanted him in your life.
spk_0
Yeah, because he was so safe with him.
spk_0
He's a martial arts master.
spk_0
He's actually the teacher of Leonardo's daughter.
spk_0
Leonardo's daughter.
spk_0
And he is very powerful within this community of illegal immigrants.
spk_0
He's a linchpin.
spk_0
That he...
spk_0
Even that.
spk_0
That is the way that part of the story unfolds.
spk_0
Yes.
spk_0
It's not an enormous way.
spk_0
It's just an obvious.
spk_0
spk_0
You know, when you get a little present,
spk_0
you take out what you fish in it, you take out another position.
spk_0
You take out that's what the unraveling and unveiling of this story was like, wasn't it?
spk_0
Well, I want to remind ourselves,
spk_0
I love this detail, you know, filmmakers and porn filmmakers.
spk_0
Steven Spielberg caught this, had a previous reading with Paul Thomas Anderson.
spk_0
Watched it with the director, apparently, went away and called the Warner Brothers and said,
spk_0
I need a copy and watched it three times, consecutively,
spk_0
because you couldn't get enough of it.
spk_0
Keke?
spk_0
I don't know how young this dude is.
spk_0
Very hard to please.
spk_0
Very hard to be.
spk_0
He said, I want to watch it again now.
spk_0
Yeah, yeah.
spk_0
I don't know, you mean that?
spk_0
She's never laughed that much in this, really?
spk_0
She's never, she turns me in one which is like, I've got little goose bumps.
spk_0
Look at my arms.
spk_0
Oh my God.
spk_0
I think she doesn't get like, Keke's not a person.
spk_0
No, no, she's not that person.
spk_0
And it just tells a lot that she felt that way about it.
spk_0
I mean, now, even if you're talking about it now,
spk_0
I'm getting this like rushed through my body, memory,
spk_0
or the different feelings, you know.
spk_0
Absolutely.
spk_0
I just want to just shout out to that moment where you first meet him,
spk_0
and he's what's not the first time,
spk_0
the longest time you meet him between him and Leo runs in.
spk_0
And the way in which for each of the tutorials,
spk_0
the performer just plays with the normality of what he was dealing with,
spk_0
receipts, fine calls and appings in his career in his career studio.
spk_0
This chaos runs in.
spk_0
He's looking around, he's taking in what's going on,
spk_0
continuing with an errand that we don't know,
spk_0
and then starts to push into what the incoming action is.
spk_0
When I was watching that bit, Maddie, I was thinking of you,
spk_0
I'm not thinking of you.
spk_0
Yes.
spk_0
And I was thinking, what a lesson.
spk_0
And what does that, that business that he was doing?
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
And what power of training does that come into?
spk_0
Because he was just, he was, he truly inhabited the character.
spk_0
He had on over that one million times.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
So it was just coming from him.
spk_0
It was, there was not a thought.
spk_0
We were watching him as if it was a documentary.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
I mean, I think every time he was on screen,
spk_0
a whole time he would be on screen, he was always busy character.
spk_0
Busy.
spk_0
And everything he did, it was like he'd done it.
spk_0
Yes.
spk_0
And he was actually, he was, you know, exactly what it was that he was doing.
spk_0
And that's why he was so unbelievable.
spk_0
Because he was never rushed, he was never fettered, he was never,
spk_0
he was just, he was just, he was, he was just, he was,
spk_0
spk_0
Ocean waves.
spk_0
And there was never one moment of panic.
spk_0
Was it, was it weak?
spk_0
spk_0
Because we're such panchuses.
spk_0
I think we were sick.
spk_0
I think I got it.
spk_0
I talked about it.
spk_0
And I was like, the reason he and Kiki were finding it so funny
spk_0
was that that would Leo is exactly what that would be like.
spk_0
Exactly.
spk_0
Exactly.
spk_0
And he would be far more paranoid.
spk_0
He was, there was a prolonged, anyway, so that's beneath you.
spk_0
It's because you're on the phone, you're lying beneath this at all.
spk_0
Yeah, it's still been to the team agent.
spk_0
Oh my god, yeah.
spk_0
So, so in the, in the present day of the film where you've got the grown-up daughter with Leo,
spk_0
was that improvised?
spk_0
It felt.
spk_0
It was so much more spill about this, well, because I just feel like that.
spk_0
I don't think it was, I don't think as much as we'd like to think,
spk_0
but I think there would have been moments where obviously they'll come true.
spk_0
I feel like that phone bit was definitely.
spk_0
But again, no, so, but what about this relationship with Chase Infinity is daughter?
spk_0
I thought that was beautiful.
spk_0
I thought they're father daughter.
spk_0
And the home.
spk_0
Yeah, in the home.
spk_0
What a beautiful actress.
spk_0
We were literally, we all looked at each other like, ah, you know, just her face.
spk_0
Yes.
spk_0
Oh, no, she was, I didn't expect that.
spk_0
You have to fall into her face.
spk_0
I was sorry.
spk_0
I don't believe that she would be the daughter.
spk_0
They both had that like, I know.
spk_0
Yes.
spk_0
So watchable.
spk_0
And let's not forget we've been given, we've been given the clue right early on in the,
spk_0
right at the beginning of the film when, sorry, Tiana Taylor, her mom is firing the gun
spk_0
with a pregnant stop.
spk_0
But what I love about that as an image, once you get to the end of the film,
spk_0
is you think, oh, well, it was clearly programmed in there.
spk_0
But it's like Leo says, she's just living life like she's not pregnant at all.
spk_0
She's not pregnant at all.
spk_0
And we see, we start to see similar as she, as we start to see the reveal of her mom inside.
spk_0
Yes.
spk_0
That was, yeah.
spk_0
Well, there was that, but I thought this was one of the most beautiful portraits of a daughter with her dad.
spk_0
And I just thought the way she looked after him and was spoke to him around the check, you know,
spk_0
about what have you done?
spk_0
Where are you going?
spk_0
I know, I was the sequence of her friends.
spk_0
And she was kind of a little YouTuber and hysterical.
spk_0
So funny.
spk_0
You were so, so like dad.
spk_0
It was frightening.
spk_0
It was frightening.
spk_0
Just removing the split.
spk_0
And of course, he's kind of par...
spk_0
Oh my god, the funniest moment.
spk_0
So she goes, I mean, this isn't a spoiler because it's in the plot outline.
spk_0
But when she essentially goes missing and he's looking for it and the hunt is on,
spk_0
the moment he gets the call from the old revolutionary colleagues.
spk_0
And he's asking the boss for the split.
spk_0
That's an out of his brains.
spk_0
I have not, I think Leonardo DiCaprio right there wanting himself an offstab was just...
spk_0
And I howled with laughter at the point that he was given another chance to the past world.
spk_0
We had a woman in front of us.
spk_0
Oh my god.
spk_0
Towards the end, he could not hold it in anymore.
spk_0
And she was like, what?
spk_0
And she was like, yes!
spk_0
It was such a great atmosphere in the cinema.
spk_0
Yeah, really was.
spk_0
It seems to have everything.
spk_0
It's a really feel-good, silly way to never dance film.
spk_0
Let's just talk quickly about the Christmas Adventure Club.
spk_0
Now, the Christmas Adventure Club.
spk_0
Very chilling.
spk_0
This is, and again, the idea that we live in now, which is this world of billionaires and oligarchs,
spk_0
who are kind of controlling...
spk_0
That's in all the Elon Musk and all the other underground groups.
spk_0
Yeah, really creepy.
spk_0
What's the illuminati and that sort of thing that people talk about?
spk_0
Anyway, Sean Penn's drive is that he's kind of been offered possibly to get into this.
spk_0
But he has to be cleaner than clean.
spk_0
Almost coup clubs clown on there.
spk_0
Everything.
spk_0
Everything else is a premise-ethic.
spk_0
And this is what they are.
spk_0
And think the plantations and that sort of...
spk_0
White supremacy on just like the very wealthiest and very...
spk_0
They were all so good.
spk_0
They were all so good.
spk_0
I couldn't believe it was so believable.
spk_0
I almost watched him let all these are just like a real group of people.
spk_0
Yeah, yeah.
spk_0
Because it was all...
spk_0
It was like the most dignified mafia discussion.
spk_0
There's like the film so kind of because the radio has that conversation was just like...
spk_0
The actual stuff that they're talking about.
spk_0
When they're talking about you wouldn't know that that's what they're just...
spk_0
Exactly, exactly.
spk_0
That's what it's like.
spk_0
It's civilized.
spk_0
Because such civilized chance.
spk_0
And what did that illustrate?
spk_0
That illustrated the power of the echo chamber.
spk_0
Yes.
spk_0
So when you're only with people that totally agree with you,
spk_0
you are comfortable to say the most.
spk_0
Because they're no longer the most outrageous dreadful thing.
spk_0
Absolutely.
spk_0
The way of the world.
spk_0
It's the absolute antithesis of a scene safe from...
spk_0
School says he's good first.
spk_0
Where you can see what they're all planning and they're all saying,
spk_0
take him out, what you're laughing at me, I'm a funny like a clown.
spk_0
I don't know if you know it's the old man.
spk_0
I couldn't help it.
spk_0
The film was a riff on by...
spk_0
Triple down his jar, I went over to you with that voice.
spk_0
It's fucking dribble coming down his gin.
spk_0
And so Sean Penn is trying to ingratiate this through.
spk_0
I was just the guy that they'd kind of call to me.
spk_0
I don't know if you noticed, but the entire time throughout the whole duration of the scene,
spk_0
he was just staring at him.
spk_0
You didn't look at any of these.
spk_0
Yes, the old guys.
spk_0
The old guy dribbling.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
The old guy dribbling, boom, he said that the guy that they were talking to,
spk_0
said only said to the two lines, but other than that, he was just staring at it.
spk_0
And he was, it was a masterful performance.
spk_0
So, so creepy.
spk_0
And yet again,
spk_0
spoke to everything that's going on in America.
spk_0
Well, that hit you so bad with it.
spk_0
Yes, yes, he just...
spk_0
Never hit over the head.
spk_0
I'm the character, the guy that was that interrogating.
spk_0
Everybody.
spk_0
Oh my god, he was great.
spk_0
That was an actual jack trowel.
spk_0
He was just one of the senior officers who kind of intercepts the kind of prom party that Leo's daughter goes to.
spk_0
What's they're trying to hunt?
spk_0
Because you got Sean.
spk_0
So, essentially Sean Penn's hunting for his daughter, Leonardo's hunting for his daughter.
spk_0
And it's just brilliant.
spk_0
It's the, in the weird way, it's like so conventionally brilliant road movie thriller kind of thing.
spk_0
But that does such a disservice.
spk_0
Because it's so dense and thick and just masterful in its characterisation and the complexity of all the characters.
spk_0
I have to give him a real shout out.
spk_0
I thought it was a really tender performance for Regina Hall.
spk_0
Yes, she was good.
spk_0
Who was wonderful.
spk_0
And like, just some really kind of deft moments as well when they're at the nunnery and it goes quiet.
spk_0
And no problem.
spk_0
Yeah, that's why it's so good.
spk_0
And then they just come round the corner.
spk_0
Come round the corner.
spk_0
And you almost like, well, it's so quiet right now that they're not going to get it.
spk_0
I was just going to like run on something.
spk_0
And that's why it's just coming to a normal scene where they were talking.
spk_0
She just pauses and just looks and you go.
spk_0
She was really...
spk_0
Maddie's soundtrack.
spk_0
Yeah, it's soundtrack incredible.
spk_0
It was so constant.
spk_0
You said a really interesting thing which I think is so true.
spk_0
It's both, it adds to the overstimulation.
spk_0
But at other times it was a moment I think when she walked into the church hall and Sean Penn was right down the end of me.
spk_0
I have this whole fucking weird scene where he's...
spk_0
For some reason I'm going to say my DNA is involved and all this kind of stuff.
spk_0
That music that kicked him was deep your chest through.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
And I almost... I was almost driven to tears.
spk_0
I was like, oh my god, she's facing. What is she facing?
spk_0
Her future.
spk_0
I thought it was an interesting film about DNA.
spk_0
Actually, not in a literal sense.
spk_0
But I thought it was an interesting film about, as you said, how you felt the mother comes through the daughter.
spk_0
You wondered how much of Leo was in her despite what we discovered at the end of the film.
spk_0
You would think of what Sean Penn's contribution.
spk_0
I thought it was an interesting film about who we are and where we come from.
spk_0
Absolutely.
spk_0
You know, right down to migrants and what is more...
spk_0
I don't have ever watched such a dense...
spk_0
No.
spk_0
...dense in content film.
spk_0
If you're a feeler and a thinker, you're going to love it.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
I mean, it's 10 out of 10.
spk_0
You don't do numbers?
spk_0
I know.
spk_0
Well, I started watching it. I was thinking, I'm going to be 10 out of 10.
spk_0
10 out of 10.
spk_0
10 out of 10.
spk_0
Okay, what would you say?
spk_0
I would say...
spk_0
She also said that she would give it a 10 out of 10.
spk_0
Which she?
spk_0
I genuinely think it was faultless.
spk_0
I can't...
spk_0
I actually can't think of a single moment that was...
spk_0
Not that.
spk_0
Perfect.
spk_0
And a single character that wasn't perfect.
spk_0
Even the ones that were on the floor, she just split second.
spk_0
We had that guy that she was given to Tandova to these people.
spk_0
Oh, I'm sorry.
spk_0
He never says really much at all.
spk_0
And he ends up saving her life.
spk_0
But he was just such a complex character.
spk_0
He didn't say much at all.
spk_0
A handler.
spk_0
Yeah, a handler, yeah.
spk_0
Right down to the guy that's just sat there when she's handed off.
spk_0
And he's just like, yeah, she is, but Leo.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Like there was so much depth to...
spk_0
And for each single scene with the character.
spk_0
Even if somebody had one, even the children...
spk_0
Even the guys, even the children.
spk_0
The children were great.
spk_0
The guys, the skateboarders.
spk_0
Yeah, the skateboarders.
spk_0
The skateboarders.
spk_0
Oh, it's just this...
spk_0
Right across the room.
spk_0
It's just like watching...
spk_0
It's just like watching real life really.
spk_0
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
spk_0
Just have the main characters that you're kind of following.
spk_0
But everything was just so believable and real and deep that you just...
spk_0
Yeah, I haven't had a film where I believe it, everything, and it's like that stuff.
spk_0
There's not a stitch that is dropped.
spk_0
Right down to the...
spk_0
And I thought it did a really...
spk_0
It will break friendships up.
spk_0
If you...
spk_0
If you...
spk_0
It's like the first character film.
spk_0
Yeah, it's going to break people's relationships.
spk_0
spk_0
Because it's one of those, where somebody goes, if somebody would say to me,
spk_0
Oh, I thought it's a bit boring.
spk_0
I thought it's a bit boring.
spk_0
I...
spk_0
I'm never going to be able to look at you normally again.
spk_0
You have...
spk_0
I've got a hicc.
spk_0
I'll tell you what you do.
spk_0
Ocean Ways.
spk_0
Ocean Ways.
spk_0
Ocean Ways.
spk_0
I guess.
spk_0
Interesting.
spk_0
Interestingly, I mean, I would say that I just...
spk_0
I've got to give a shout out from a technical perspective.
spk_0
There is a...
spk_0
There is a...
spk_0
There is a...
spk_0
You know, I went row...
spk_0
You know, car chases.
spk_0
Car chases.
spk_0
Car chases, you feel we've all seen them.
spk_0
You can only do so much with car chases.
spk_0
You can only do so much with car chases.
spk_0
This does something with a car chase, unlike anything I've ever seen without doing anything which involves acrobatics or special effects.
spk_0
But the one thing I do want to give a shout out to you,
spk_0
it's so sensationaly clever,
spk_0
is that there is a montage sequence of chasing and you've got the kind of...
spk_0
You've got the camera and you've got the hills of the roads in America.
spk_0
I remember years ago when I was in America filming the race across America cycling.
spk_0
I tried to recreate a shot that was in Mississippi burning.
spk_0
And in Mississippi burning, which was a great, great movie.
spk_0
There's this shot across the road and you see a car come down and it disappears when there's no cars.
spk_0
And the car comes up the front and then you see the police car with the KKK at the top.
spk_0
Come back and then they disappear and go,
spk_0
Yeah, chilling.
spk_0
Anyway, I got the shot in America.
spk_0
I'm certain it's not the cyclist.
spk_0
I've got to go back to America just to do this.
spk_0
Because you can see that there's no special effects and then visual effects use.
spk_0
Because there are certain points where when it goes down, it's on such a long lens,
spk_0
the grain of the tarmac.
spk_0
Right, the tarmac.
spk_0
Was in your face and the disorientation.
spk_0
I'm so glad we all saw it together as a family.
spk_0
spk_0
But that was on forever.
spk_0
Always.
spk_0
I was so clever.
spk_0
I don't know if you don't think it's going to end.
spk_0
Oh, boring.
spk_0
No.
spk_0
Because I would usually get off.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
But I was having to look at the film.
spk_0
I was very emotional.
spk_0
spk_0
No, I was too.
spk_0
We were all going.
spk_0
Is this happening?
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
It was so...
spk_0
It was...
spk_0
It was a grave, I love the film.
spk_0
That was so good because this film, like I would say majority of the film was really choppy
spk_0
and you're kind of going from a big thing, but it's not afraid to really sit in moments like that.
spk_0
It was so it's going to be even more effective.
spk_0
And like even though that was kind of continuous music playing underneath everything,
spk_0
like just kind of simmering underneath.
spk_0
There were moments where all of that was completely stripped and it was nothing.
spk_0
Yes.
spk_0
All of it was effective.
spk_0
And top draw listens, I'm like wonderful little moments like this.
spk_0
I mean, it's an absolute just Aladdin's cave of treats for movie fans and lovers.
spk_0
It's like the moment where his daughter, Chase Infinity, is sat outside his kind of log cabin, if you like.
spk_0
And we're intercutting with the police going into everywhere and Sean Penn chasing, chasing, chasing.
spk_0
And we just kept cutting back to that shot for just sat in front of it.
spk_0
There are moments of extraordinary tranquility that are intercutting into spursque with the constant kind of tuning of throwing a story to it.
spk_0
Because she was just literally sat outside.
spk_0
I just, there's power to it.
spk_0
There's everything in this.
spk_0
Yeah, it's awesome.
spk_0
This is, I think, one of my favourite films of all time.
spk_0
I think it is my favourite film.
spk_0
Wow.
spk_0
I was just right up.
spk_0
Just right up.
spk_0
I mean, of course, that was something really fun.
spk_0
But come on.
spk_0
No, stop me.
spk_0
It just, it, and especially at the moment where I'm feeding revolution ring myself.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
When you said you spoke to someone who was worried about scared of it.
spk_0
No, no, no, I don't know.
spk_0
But if a couple of people message me yesterday, it said, oh, I've just seen that that isn't terrifying.
spk_0
I mean, that could, that that could be the world's time.
spk_0
I know.
spk_0
But I was thinking of it from a revolution, it's point of view.
spk_0
And it wasn't so much thinking.
spk_0
Could I wonder if the other people that text me from, oh my god, the migrants could take over?
spk_0
They're scared of me.
spk_0
So I don't feel at all.
spk_0
But I scared of not having migrants.
spk_0
Not having enough migrants at the moment.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Viva revolution.
spk_0
Oh my god.
spk_0
Do we have a revolution?
spk_0
spk_0
Oh my god.
spk_0
I'm going to take a stone.
spk_0
I'm giving you 100.
spk_0
I'm giving you 100.
spk_0
I'm giving you 100.
spk_0
I'm giving you 100.
spk_0
spk_0
I'm giving you 100.
spk_0
spk_0
100.
spk_0
100.
spk_0
It's out of a 10.
spk_0
100.
spk_0
No, because they're not.
spk_0
100 out of 10.
spk_0
100 out of 10.
spk_0
Why, why, why, why is it supposed to stop?
spk_0
To fast it.
spk_0
100, no, 150%.
spk_0
No.
spk_0
That's 100.
spk_0
No, but I don't have any.
spk_0
I'm engaging numbers until this moment.
spk_0
100%?
spk_0
Would you give it 100%.
spk_0
At.
spk_0
But then he's going to go 150%.
spk_0
No, not to speed it up.
spk_0
100%.
spk_0
It's fucking great.
spk_0
I have no 100.
spk_0
I turn that at 10.
spk_0
Would you tell your friends to go and see it?
spk_0
Of course.
spk_0
And anyone who doesn't like it isn't the only one that you've got my friend anymore.
