For world-renowned cellists Joshua Roman,
spk_0
Long COVID caused an identity crisis.
spk_0
That was probably the lowest point.
spk_0
No confidence in my ability to recover
spk_0
crisis of faith about what music meant.

On the Ted Radio Hour, how he found his way back

How Speaker Mike Johnson says the Trump administration
spk_0
may be able to withhold back pay for federal workers
spk_0
following a threat by the president.
spk_0
NPR's Claudia Grisolis reports Johnson says
spk_0
they're taking another look at a law requiring
spk_0
workers get paid once the shutdown ends.
spk_0
Speaker Johnson said while he has not
spk_0
talked to the White House about the plan,
spk_0
there are some legal analysts who say
spk_0
back pay may not be required under the 2019 law.
spk_0
But there are legal analysts who think
spk_0
that that is not something that government should do.
spk_0
That, if that is true, that should turn up
spk_0
the urgency and the necessity of the Democrats
spk_0
doing the right thing here.
spk_0
But atop Senate appropriations,
spk_0
Democrat Patty Murray of Washington
spk_0
calls such arguments by President Trump
spk_0
and other Republicans lawless.
spk_0
Trump doesn't get to change the rules and rob workers
spk_0
just because he's worried his shutdown is backfiring.
spk_0
President Trump signed the 2019 measure into law
spk_0
after the longest government shut down in history.
spk_0
Claudia Grisolis in P.R. News, the Capitol.
spk_0
Air traffic controllers are among those workers
spk_0
not getting paid and there's a shortage in the shutdown.
spk_0
The FAA says today flights at Nashville International Airport
spk_0
are being reduced, ground delays average two hours.
spk_0
Attorney General Pambondi testified to the Senate Judiciary Committee
spk_0
for hours today, pushing back on criticism from Democrats
spk_0
that the Justice Department has been weaponized against Trump's
spk_0
perceived enemies and peers, Elena Moore reports.
spk_0
Pambondi told the committee she's working
spk_0
to depoliticize the DOJ from the way things were done
spk_0
in the Biden administration.
spk_0
They were playing politics with law enforcement powers
spk_0
and will go down as a historic betrayal of public trust.
spk_0
This is the kind of conduct that shatters the American people's faith
spk_0
in our law enforcement system.
spk_0
While Republican lawmakers are commending her leadership,
spk_0
Democrats accused Bonde of using the agency to go
spk_0
after Trump's perceived enemies.
spk_0
Her testimony comes weeks after the department secured an indictment
spk_0
against FBI director James Comey.
spk_0
Shortly after Trump demanded the DOJ take action against him,

A new combination of drugs looks promising
spk_0
for people with some forms of advanced prostate cancer.
spk_0
And Pierre's Yuki Naguchi reports about one in four
spk_0
such patients could benefit.
spk_0
The study looked at what happened when a drug called Neuroparib,
spk_0
which treats ovarian and breast cancer,
spk_0
is added to a combination of two other drugs used
spk_0
as standard treatment for prostate cancer.
spk_0
Researchers at the University College of London
spk_0
followed 700 patients with certain genetic alterations
spk_0
in their prostate cancer for over two and a half years.
spk_0
It found adding the third drug reduced risk of progression
spk_0
by 37% overall and nearly half among those
spk_0
with certain specific genetic markers.
spk_0
The combination also significantly delayed onset of symptoms.

It's NPR.

The 10th named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season
spk_0
has formed.
spk_0
Tropical storm Jerry is expected to approach the Northern
spk_0
Leeward Islands later this week.
spk_0
And in the Pacific, Hurricane Priscilla has strengthened
spk_0
to a category two storm.
spk_0
It's outer bands spreading over Mexico's Southern Baja,
spk_0
California peninsula.

Federal Reserve Governor Stephen Myron says keeping interest
spk_0
rates too high for too long could pose a risk
spk_0
to the U.S. economy.
spk_0
NPR's Scott Horsley reports Myron spoke to a group
spk_0
of financial managers in New York today.
spk_0
President Trump has been pushing the Federal Reserve
spk_0
to cut interest rates more aggressively.
spk_0
And his latest appointee to the Fed governing board
spk_0
has been echoing that view.
spk_0
Stephen Myron, who joined the Fed board in September,
spk_0
cast the lone vote that month for a supersized rate cut.
spk_0
He also projected two more jumbo rate cuts by December,
spk_0
a forecast far more aggressive than anyone else
spk_0
on the Fed's rate setting committee.
spk_0
One reason for why my, you know, sort of dot for 2025
spk_0
sticks out so much from everyone else's
spk_0
is because I'm more sanguine on the inflation.
spk_0
I look than a lot of other people are.
spk_0
Myron says he expects housing costs to cool
spk_0
and he doesn't believe Trump's tariffs
spk_0
will cause much of a jump in prices.
spk_0
Scott Horsley in Pairnews, Washington.
spk_0
The price of gold has topped $4,000 per ounce
spk_0
for the first time.
spk_0
The price surge seen as a warning sign
spk_0
about the health of the broader economy.
spk_0
That's because investors seagulled as a safe haven.
spk_0
They buy it when they're worried about other factors.
spk_0
And on the seventh day of the government shutdown,
spk_0
stocks closed broadly lower.
spk_0
The Dow down 91 points, the S&P down 25 points.
