spk_0 If you've never heard Motley Crew, I guess you've never been to a strip club band.

spk_0 It's an honor and a privilege.

spk_0 I couldn't be happier.

spk_0 There's not a single person on earth.

spk_0 I'd rather be talking to you besides actually Mr. Nikki Sixham's all.

spk_0 I'm fucking pumped.

spk_0 Thanks.

spk_0 Can you before we dive in, before we dive into the dirt, if you allow me, can you just

spk_0 tell me briefly about your personal history with the crew?

spk_0 Absolutely, Yassie.

spk_0 So, like, my love affair with Motley Crew probably started when I read the dirt, which is

spk_0 the best fucking book.

spk_0 But like, as a Gen X MTV obsessed kid, I saw all the videos because they were on non-fucking

spk_0 stop.

spk_0 Motley Crew was the biggest band in the world.

spk_0 It wasn't like my rock thing per se as like an 11 year old.

spk_0 That would have been Guns of Roses.

spk_0 But then later, I read the dirt and that book's so fucking good that I reconsidered

spk_0 Motley Crew.

spk_0 I bought like the records.

spk_0 I got really into them.

spk_0 And now I'm just a fan.

spk_0 I fucking love them.

spk_0 Yeah, you're just a fan.

spk_0 Yeah, yeah, yeah.

spk_0 And I love the mess.

spk_0 I love the disaster.

spk_0 We'll get into it.

spk_0 Yeah.

spk_0 Oh, there's a lot of mess and disaster.

spk_0 Shockingly, you know, as you know, I'm a professor of rock music history.

spk_0 I had never read the dirt or even seen the cursed film.

spk_0 We'll get into that later until this prepping for this thing.

spk_0 I don't know why.

spk_0 I guess much like yourself or not that much like yourself.

spk_0 Motley Crew videos were a little before my MTV time.

spk_0 So I didn't know much about them or care or have any interest.

spk_0 And it never occurred to me to read the book.

spk_0 Even when the movie came out and everyone was talking about it again, I was like, I guess

spk_0 I'll probably do an episode eventually.

spk_0 I'll save it for that.

spk_0 And this is a fucking insane text.

spk_0 It's incredible.

spk_0 Oh, God.

spk_0 Where do we begin?

spk_0 We're going to like parse it throughout.

spk_0 Like, I mean, that's my source text for this.

spk_0 Although, obviously, I'm a completist.

spk_0 So I did read both of Nikki Six's memoirs as well as Tommy Lee's book.

spk_0 Yeah, I was out here in London trying to catch a man sitting in cafes casually reading

spk_0 Tommy Lee's autobiography, which you know is really giving.

spk_0 Let me go talk to that woman.

spk_0 No, not one single man approached me.

spk_0 They were like, it's giving my dick not big enough to go talk to that lady over there.

spk_0 It was, I did it to myself.

spk_0 It was absolutely chastity belt.

spk_0 I don't have it in front of me, but there's a porn star playmate wrote a book that heavily

spk_0 mentions Tommy Lee.

spk_0 I read those excerpts of that too.

spk_0 There's a lot of texts, but the dirt is the main one.

spk_0 I just want to say before we begin, like Molly Crew is so pivotal to what we now call,

spk_0 I guess, glam metal, right?

spk_0 It was that we could hear metal, glam metal ostensibly not the first glam metal band.

spk_0 I think you could, you would have to say that's twisted sister because they were a bit

spk_0 earlier.

spk_0 That's like a 70s band, but they minted it.

spk_0 Like they made it a thing.

spk_0 I did not realize until until reading these books that dude looks like a lady by Arasmith

spk_0 apparently is about Vince Neal.

spk_0 Did you know that?

spk_0 I didn't know that it makes a lot of sense.

spk_0 It makes a lot of sense.

spk_0 And then also money for nothing and chicks for free by Dyer Straits.

spk_0 It's also apparently about Molly Crew.

spk_0 Distracts.

spk_0 Part of the cultural landscape.

spk_0 All right.

spk_0 We're going to start with, I'll say it up top, my favorite member of Molly Crew, Niki

spk_0 Six.

spk_0 He was born Frank Carlton Seraphino Farona, Jr. on December 11, 1958.

spk_0 He is a Sagittarius in San Jose, California at 7.11 a.m.

spk_0 As he says in the dirt, I was as early as I could be and even back then, probably still

spk_0 up from the night before.

spk_0 Niki Six was partying in the womb.

spk_0 His mother, Deanna, was an Idaho farm girl who was a gorgeous supermodel.

spk_0 But according to Niki, she quote had an untamable wild streak, completely capricious, prone to

spk_0 random adventure and constitutionally unable to create any pattern of stability.

spk_0 I want to talk a bit about Niki's upbringing because I think it's really important.

spk_0 Niki is the full-crumb of this band.

spk_0 Niki is the spring of creativity of this band.

spk_0 He is the center of the universe as far as Molly Crew is concerned.

spk_0 He said in his book, the first 21, that he had asked his aunt, Harleen, about his birth

spk_0 story.

spk_0 She was like, well, I had to come take care of you for the first two weeks of your life

spk_0 because your mom didn't want to.

spk_0 Which is like so, you know, like it already kind of sets up like where all this, what we get

spk_0 from the story of Molly Crew and all the disastrous self-destruction from Niki kind of has its

spk_0 root from the very beginning.

spk_0 His father, who he got his name from Frank Carlton, Farona, left the family like a year after

spk_0 Niki was born.

spk_0 He also had one full biological sister named Lisa, who we don't have to get super into

spk_0 it, but he kind of didn't know about because she was born down syndrome and went to live

spk_0 away from the family very early.

spk_0 He had a super chaotic childhood, bounce from place to place, back and forth between his

spk_0 like single mother who, according to Niki every time she would get a boyfriend and she

spk_0 would sort of bounce him back to his grandparents.

spk_0 So he lived in LA, lived in Idaho, New Mexico, Lake Tahoe, actual Mexico.

spk_0 He says in his book that in Mexico, he smoked pot and drink whiskey for the first time at

spk_0 age seven years old with his mom and her boyfriend Bernie.

spk_0 Yeah.

spk_0 And he, this is what he said.

spk_0 He said, one thought pot and whiskey hit my system.

spk_0 My mind went kaboom and my whole world changed.

spk_0 The static in my head and my body that I felt all day every day just went away like turning

spk_0 the channel on a TV from only seeing snow and then getting the clearest picture you

spk_0 have ever seen.

spk_0 Everything made perfect sense and I no longer had any fear or sadness or doubt or anger

spk_0 about anything in the world.

spk_0 At that point, everything in my life became about chasing that feeling.

spk_0 To this day, it has never stopped no matter how much work I do on myself.

spk_0 He lived on a hog farm with his grandparents after that maybe like eight or nine.

spk_0 He had to kill rabbits as his job, that's why it doesn't number on a child's head.

spk_0 He became a bitter in his words, a bitter and destructive kid and also a violent one.

spk_0 He was beating up kids that were trying to bully him.

spk_0 The first song that spoke to him according to him in several testimonials is the song

spk_0 Big Bad John by Jimmy Dean.

spk_0 He said he heard on the radio and I lost my mind.

spk_0 It cut through the board of like a scythe.

spk_0 The song had style and attitude.

spk_0 It was cool.

spk_0 I found it.

spk_0 I thought this is what I've been looking for.

spk_0 I phoned the station to so much to request Big Bad John, the DJ told me to stop calling.

spk_0 Big Bad John.

spk_0 Big John.

spk_0 We don't really have to get into the fact that Big Bad John came out like way before he would

spk_0 have been a child listening to the radio.

spk_0 This is a myth, the dirt and the Molly Crew story.

spk_0 We don't have to root in fact.

spk_0 But anyways, he gets super into music.

spk_0 He said he would listen to the radio 10 hours a day, deep purple, Bachman Turner overdrive,

spk_0 Pink Floyd, gets into Sabbath, also bread.

spk_0 This is interesting because we're going to get into it when we get to the first Molly

spk_0 Crew album but like Molly Crew is like low key a 70s band spiritually.

spk_0 Do you not feel that in the beginning?

spk_0 Yes, because they love the dolls.

spk_0 Like they love Iggy Pop.

spk_0 They love cheap trick.

spk_0 I think they're a Bowie too.

spk_0 They love Bowie.

spk_0 Yeah, definitely Bowie was a, I mean, New York Dolls was like, their thing.

spk_0 Their thing like the rip.

spk_0 I mean, we're going to get into New York Dolls with it all because that's so important.

spk_0 It's so important that I went back and also read like two New York Dolls books because

spk_0 I was like, oh, now I need to like, I need to get to the source material.

spk_0 Before New York Dolls though, Nikki starts playing football.

spk_0 Nikki's a jock.

spk_0 Nikki is a corn fed tall, broad shouldered, salt of the earth, American boy who plays

spk_0 football.

spk_0 And he said of the sport football gave me the same feeling I get when the band breaks

spk_0 into shout of the devil.

spk_0 I was as proud of wearing that uniform as I was on the day I got my first base.

spk_0 And still, this is very interesting.

spk_0 I never got this.

spk_0 The black stripes that Nikki Six famously wore in his glam makeup are his football stripes.

spk_0 That's what they are.

spk_0 It's so cool.

spk_0 I never knew that.

spk_0 And he said no one got it.

spk_0 But he's like, they were called back to my days playing football.

spk_0 Nikki Six was authentic people.

spk_0 So I don't know what else to say.

spk_0 It's like a real thing.

spk_0 In 1972, I have a bunch of question marks on the dates.

spk_0 Not that it really matters, but he goes to live back with his mother and who had moved

spk_0 it at this point to like a suburb of Seattle.

spk_0 This is where he sees Led Zeppelin for the first time.

spk_0 Plus tons of other bands.

spk_0 Led Zeppelin concert, $5.

spk_0 He said that he had a sign with their name out on the stage when they played their last

spk_0 song, Black Dog, the sign burst into flames.

spk_0 It made a lasting impression.

spk_0 I saw Deep Purple whose album Burn had just come out.

spk_0 Okay, Burn came out in 1974.

spk_0 I'm not going to get into the years, but there's a few.

spk_0 There's some inconsistencies.

spk_0 We're talking about feelings.

spk_0 Exactly.

spk_0 A lot's happened to that brand.

spk_0 You know what I mean?

spk_0 That's so true.

spk_0 He sees T-Rex, he sees KISS.

spk_0 We forgot KISS.

spk_0 KISS is also very important.

spk_0 Then his mother's boyfriend at that time, Ramon, gives him his first acoustic guitar.

spk_0 He said, for that, I am forever grateful.

spk_0 That guitar was the first instrument I'd ever possessed.

spk_0 It turned my whole life upside down.

spk_0 So Ramon taught him a little about guitar, and then he taught himself the rest by playing

spk_0 along to Deep Purple.

spk_0 Me falling in love with Nikki Sixx in real time was a true journey.

spk_0 He said, but I got excited for real when I tried to read words I had written along with

spk_0 the music.

spk_0 Right away, the poems I'd been writing firmed up, they snapped into shape.

spk_0 I had always felt compelled to write notes and stories.

spk_0 If I'd seen a fight in the park or driven past two crashed cars or a Jack and I have tractor

spk_0 trailer, I would have gone home, locked myself in my room and written about it.

spk_0 But now I felt I would be able to tell my stories, set to music they made much more sense

spk_0 and had five times the force.

spk_0 Nikki Sixx is a poet babe.

spk_0 Without a doubt.

spk_0 So he joins a band and this is why he plays bass because they needed bass.

spk_0 And he said, every day I tried to learn the stuages, sparks, especially the song, this

spk_0 town ain't big enough for both of us and Arrowsmith, great fucking song.

spk_0 This is also where you forget that sparks has been around for a hundred and seven years.

spk_0 So true.

spk_0 Truly one of the most enduring bands of all time.

spk_0 He wasn't good enough for that band that he tried to be in, but then he met a guy named

spk_0 Gaylord outside a show who had a punk band called The Videats.

spk_0 So fucking cool.

spk_0 He said every day after school, I go to his house, Gaylord's house and drink till I passed

spk_0 out listening to the near dolls, MC5 and Blue Cheer.

spk_0 You forgot about Blue Cheer, ain't no cure for the summertime blues.

spk_0 Blue Cheer.

spk_0 Sometimes I wonder what I'm gonna do.

spk_0 No, there ain't no cure for the summertime blues.

spk_0 There'd always be a dozen glammed out in New York dolls looking chicks and dudes there

spk_0 were in fingernail polish and eye makeup.

spk_0 They called us the Wiz Kids, not because we took a lot of speed, which we did, but because

spk_0 we were flashy dressers like David Bowie, whose young Americans album had just come out.

spk_0 Like the mods in England, we'd sell drugs to buy clothes.

spk_0 Young Americans came out in 1975.

spk_0 We don't really have to get into it.

spk_0 So it wouldn't have been when Niki was 14, which was 1972.

spk_0 Again, that's just fine.

spk_0 He's selling drugs, babe.

spk_0 He's stealing.

spk_0 He's getting in fights.

spk_0 He's frying on acid.

spk_0 He's like a hover bad kid with like, he's just like the ultimate bad kid from a broken

spk_0 home.

spk_0 100%.

spk_0 But like also drawn to, but also like a freak, like drawn to the freak shit of like wearing

spk_0 nail polish and makeup, which was like, again, this is 1972 slash five.

spk_0 You know, like it's, this is very uncommon.

spk_0 Like you're going to get picked on.

spk_0 He said the black kids at school called him Alice Bowie and tried to beat him up.

spk_0 Alice Bowie is very funny, actually.

spk_0 Alice Bowie is a great name.

spk_0 So he starts hanging out with these other kids that are in a band called Cold Days.

spk_0 They start buying long, cool scarves to like get their Keith Richards on.

spk_0 They're buying women's vests.

spk_0 You know, they're super skinny so they can wear all that stuff.

spk_0 They're really into it.

spk_0 Around age 14, this is, I'm sure you'll remember this, he tries to have his mother arrested.

spk_0 Toles form sounds bad.

spk_0 Think about Nikki Six is, he's nothing if not a planner.

spk_0 Okay.

spk_0 This man, he's a male at the plan.

spk_0 He has been since the beginning.

spk_0 He does not want to be policed anymore by his mother.

spk_0 He does not want rules.

spk_0 So he takes a blade and cuts his arm open and then calls the police and says his mom did it.

spk_0 And they come and Nikki said, I wanted them to lock her away so I could live alone.

spk_0 But my plan backfired.

spk_0 The police said that if I as a minor living in our custody, press charges,

spk_0 they'd have to put me in a juvenile home till I was 18.

spk_0 That meant I wouldn't be able to play guitar for four years.

spk_0 And that meant that I'd never make it.

spk_0 And I was going to make it.

spk_0 There was no doubt about that.

spk_0 So I struck a plea bargain with my mother.

spk_0 I told her I wouldn't press assault charges if she'd back off, leave me alone and let me be.

spk_0 You haven't been there for me.

spk_0 I told her, so just let me go.

spk_0 And she did.

spk_0 Good for you.

spk_0 Good for you, Nikki.

spk_0 She was a dick.

spk_0 He was, he's mad.

spk_0 I'm on team Nikki here.

spk_0 I'm on team Nikki.

spk_0 I'm sure she had some terrible upbringing as well.

spk_0 You know, like this is a hurt people hurt people situation,

spk_0 but we're focusing on Nikki sex here.

spk_0 OK, I want to talk about the New York Dolls thing, but I also really want to already start to talk about how

spk_0 these guys are getting these women's clothing makeup feminine.

spk_0 And I just like, it really launched me into thinking about how almost from the beginning of

spk_0 not even just white rock and roll, all rock and roll, because it was a little richer

spk_0 to first-world eyeliner, right?

spk_0 Which is even what the dolls, like, which set off this like thing of men and rock and roll

spk_0 wearing makeup.

spk_0 It started, I want to say it's a little richer.

spk_0 Does that sound right, Timo?

spk_0 Without a doubt, because little Richard was always like, I'm the first.

spk_0 I am rock and roll.

spk_0 All of you copied me.

spk_0 Where's my award?

spk_0 It's me.

spk_0 I'm the fucking one.

spk_0 All y'all copied me.

spk_0 And he's literally correct.

spk_0 Right.

spk_0 But I was just thinking, like, how from the beginning, how interesting it is that like these

spk_0 male rockers, rock stars would incorporate these aspects of femininity to attract women,

spk_0 right?

spk_0 To put them at ease, to telegraph vulnerability.

spk_0 But also, it kind of creates the sense of like wholeness, because they have like these

spk_0 overtly masculine qualities, right?

spk_0 Rock stars, like, I mean, you think a fucking, that's like you're literally

spk_0 putting your dick on parade on the stage.

spk_0 But then also, by softening it with some feminine element, it's like a wholeness.

spk_0 I don't know, I got really in my Andrea Dworkin bag or whatever when I was thinking about

spk_0 all this.

spk_0 But also, this is, in my mind, this is a cock rock band.

spk_0 Like, this band is leading with their big fucking bass.

spk_0 100%.

spk_0 And so they're also sort of like, we're so straight and we love pussy so much in our

spk_0 cocks are so big and strong that we'll wear lipstick and eyeliner and platform shoes,

spk_0 like, same as Paul Stanley, Ace Freely, like, his tongue are big dicks.

spk_0 It's just like a posturing thing, but they really fucking loved it and they really stayed

spk_0 with it.

spk_0 They're really organized in their brands, right?

spk_0 Like they like, they're like, it was a strategy.

spk_0 Yeah.

spk_0 It was a creative direction.

spk_0 And like, I don't know if it's, if they're trying to be like soft and friendly for women.

spk_0 I think they were being subversive first and foremost.

spk_0 I think that's like, because they were, they, I mean, this is where we get into the

spk_0 New York dolls of it all, right?

spk_0 Like, 1973 is the year the first New York dolls album comes out.

spk_0 I have no understanding of how Nicki found this album.

spk_0 It didn't come up in any of, because it's not like it was popular, you know?

spk_0 It's not like it was like on the charts, on the radio in every radio store.

spk_0 But to Nicki, this was a huge band, he said, they're closed, they're attitude.

spk_0 A lot of that stuff shaped Molly crew.

spk_0 And the thing about the New York dolls, here's what he said, they were iconic, the flamboyance

spk_0 of their fuck you.

spk_0 I modeled myself after Johnny Thunders trying to split the difference between him and Mad Max.

spk_0 That's why I teased my hair out.

spk_0 I was trying to look like Johnny Thunders.

spk_0 And with the New York dolls, that dress and that makeup and those platforms, that was

spk_0 super, that was punk, right?

spk_0 That was them being punk.

spk_0 That was them trying to, to like, stir the fucking pot to upset the waters.

spk_0 Absolutely.

spk_0 When it was deranged.

spk_0 It was deranged at the time, especially.

spk_0

spk_0 So the New York dolls kind of radicalizes Nicki.

spk_0 He drops out of school.

spk_0 He leaves home.

spk_0 He's kind of homeless for a bit.

spk_0 He's like shoplifting, fecking, burrows and bickowski because he's, again, the soul of

spk_0 the poet.

spk_0 And then he finally calls his mom and he's like, listen, I just need you to give me enough

spk_0 money to go back to my grandparents.

spk_0 Like I can't be here anymore.

spk_0 I'm, you know, I'm going to go to jail.

spk_0 I'm selling drugs outside the fucking D-purple show.

spk_0 Like, I got to get out of here.

spk_0 So she's like, fine.

spk_0 How old is he right now?

spk_0 It's probably 17, I want to say.

spk_0 16, 17.

spk_0 Back to the pig farm.

spk_0 He goes, Yasi.

spk_0 Yes.

spk_0 Back to Jerome, Idaho, honey.

spk_0 And he said, all I had by way of music for the ride was an arosmith tape, a lintered

spk_0 skinner tape and a boom box.

spk_0 And listen to those cassettes over and over till I arrived in Jerome.

spk_0 I walked off the bus in six-inch platforms, a great, Tweed double-breasted suit, a

spk_0 shag haircut and fingernail polish.

spk_0 I'm sorry.

spk_0 Have you ever heard of anything fucking cooler than that image?

spk_0 A real rebel, a real freak show rebel.

spk_0 With a boom box on his shoulder.

spk_0 A real freak show.

spk_0 His grandma turned white.

spk_0 Now, what happens is NEPO alert.

spk_0 Just kidding, but kind of.

spk_0 His aunt Sharon, his mom's sister, his grandparents daughter, had married Don Zimmerman,

spk_0 the then president of Capitol Records.

spk_0 And they were visiting Jerome, Idaho.

spk_0 And so he reconnects and he's like, OK, the master plan is getting notched up, you

spk_0 guys, because turns out Uncle Don is the president of Capitol Records.

spk_0 Doesn't actually, I mean, it's funny because he does a little bit help him, but not in

spk_0 the ways that you would think.

spk_0 But he does send him all these packages of cassettes and rock magazines and like, you

spk_0 know, this is what's going on in LA, babe.

spk_0 And Nicky's like, I got a move to LA.

spk_0 So at 17 years old, this is 1975.

spk_0 He packs up.

spk_0 He fucking moves in with his aunt, Uncle, in Lachinata, shout out Lachinata, beautiful

spk_0 neighborhood in Glendale, northern Glendale.

spk_0 And he says in the dirt, it's funny, because there's like differing stories.

spk_0 The dirt is obviously like where they're being kind of like, the dirt was, I don't want

spk_0 to say what's like early 2000s when I was running 2002 or something.

spk_0 So they're like still a little fresh of like, you know, fuck you or rock stars.

spk_0 And then when Nicky writes his like more reflective middle aged memoirs, it's a little softer.

spk_0 So like in the dirt, he's like, I got kicked out for being a punk.

spk_0 But then in his other book, he's like, actually don took me under his wing musically.

spk_0 He helped me get a job at music plus records in Glendale, which is where he learned about

spk_0 Devo, the Ramones, real kind of punk.

spk_0 Cause like we'll talk about New York dolls being punk spiritually and aesthetically.

spk_0 But like the music of the New York dolls besides being extremely terribly recorded and

spk_0 slightly poorly played is not punk music really, you know.

spk_0 And there's their music doesn't sound like anything like it.

spk_0 Who Molly Cruz?

spk_0 Yeah.

spk_0 Interesting.

spk_0 I'm going to poke a hole in that when we get into the first album because I have some thoughts.

spk_0 I feel yeah.

spk_0 So they also have a little said name little Ricky and you know, Nicky's out here, just smoking

spk_0 pot and being a terrible influence.

spk_0 And they're like, you know what?

spk_0 It would be so great if you didn't live here anymore.

spk_0 And so Don co-signs a little apartment for him.

spk_0 And he moves out.

spk_0 He loses his job at the record store because he is in fact stealing from the register.

spk_0 Gets a new job at a carpet cleaning place, which he also loses because he's doing some insane

spk_0 grifting where he keeps telling people that he knows how to get cat and dog pee stains

spk_0 out of the carpet with this very special treatment that's going to cost an extra whatever

spk_0 money.

spk_0 But then he just brings like a fake like vinegar or something and takes their money and

spk_0 ends up getting fight.

spk_0 He's, this is a business man.

spk_0 I want to pay in a quick picture of what's happening just like across the two 10 freeway

spk_0 from Locking out at this time.

spk_0 There's a little band called Van Halen who are becoming very popular in Pasadena.

spk_0 They were recording with Gene Simmons.

spk_0 I think this is an important thing to point out because Van Halen is in many ways also

spk_0 the blueprint of what goes on to happen with sunset strip glam rock metal, right?

spk_0 You know, like they're very much pioneers.

spk_0 with this guy named Greg.

spk_0 I think it's Leon, Greg Leon, and another high school dropout.

spk_0 Tommy is about 17.

spk_0 So this is like 1979.

spk_0 They play their first star would show.

spk_0 And that's where Tommy gets into the London of it all.

spk_0 He sees them play with Greg and Greg was like, we went to the star would one time to see London.

spk_0 And Tommy just fell in love with them.

spk_0 He goes, man, there's something about that guy talking about Nikki.

spk_0 Now sweet 19 falls apart.

spk_0 Greg starts jamming with Nikki, who was trying to put his new band together.

spk_0 After he leaves London and Nikki was like, I like Tommy's drumming style.

spk_0 It's a totally different scene that I think was falsified about him coming up to him with the

spk_0 Tommy is hired by Nikki throws Greg out because he was too normal.

spk_0 He wanted everyone to look and think exactly as he did.

spk_0 Nikki's ex-man, he had a man with a plan.

spk_0 His name is Robin, but quote, he was a pansy and everyone.

spk_0 I hadn't seen him in a year since I'd left continuation school.

spk_0 And he was sporting bright leather pants,

spk_0 stiletto heels, dyed black hair and a ribbon around his neck.

spk_0 He was actually starting to look cool.

spk_0 So Tommy brings Nikki and Mick to Rock Candy show.

spk_0 And Vince is like, I recognize one of them as the drug-addled loser basis in London.

spk_0 January 17, 1981 is the official day that Molly Crew forms because Vince finally comes to a rehearsal.

spk_0 punk satin clusters all over the sidewalk and huge lines of new waivers wearing black red and white stood in the block long lines outside of each club.

spk_0 Kim Fowley walked up and down sunset, grabbing girls and throwing them in bands while Ronnie Binghamheimer

spk_0 shredded into clubs able to make or break bands the single spin on his radio show.

spk_0 Every weekend, huge gangs of kids from North Hollywood, Sherman Oaks and Sun Valley,

spk_0 where I was originally born and lived flooded onto the scene living a thick cloud of aquanet hairspray hanging over the strip.

spk_0 these are Nikki songs I think Mick gets credited also because he writes the guitar parts like the

spk_0 solos and stuff but these Nikki writes the songs in the words and then men sings them too fast for

spk_0 he is not a fan he says in just eight months Molly crew is risen to headline status on the local

spk_0 heavy metal scene based on the quartets Friday night performance at the country club it appears

spk_0 this meteoric accent is more a result of the attention generated by the group's extremely exaggerated

spk_0 image than by anything remotely resembling musical innovation um and that's my don't know

spk_0 also you know what I just think they were like minor threat or blah blah like fuck all these dumb

spk_0 they looked amazing Nikki was so intense and seemed like he would be in the streets killing somebody

spk_0 if he wasn't playing bass he had the strings so hard that he kept splitting the skin between his

spk_0 fingers watching him throttle that thing with blood flying off his fingers the strings seem like

spk_0 razor blades Vince was one of the best looking and most charismatic singers I had ever seen

spk_0 women's legs spread open just watching him sing he was the exact opposite of the guitarist

spk_0 looking at him was like seeing Saint and reincarnated though he turned out to be the nicest of the

spk_0 bunch when he wasn't drinking Tommy looks like an overexcited kid but at the same time he seemed

spk_0 like the only natural born musician in the band he was a high quality drummer a good showman

spk_0 their managers assistant Eric grief who honestly Loki ended up being some sort of PR

spk_0 spengali because the band gets arrested and released an Edmonton international airport for

spk_0 wearing their spiked stage wardrobe that was considered dangerous weapons through customs

spk_0 and then also they got arrested another time for Neil having a Vince Neil having a carry on

spk_0 of porn magazines but both of these things were staged PR stunts that Eric grief set up so they

spk_0 would get press also a bomb threat that was also fake anyways that's a little bit crazy to do a

spk_0 bomb threat to get press but you know they were they were getting on the front page of the Edmonton

spk_0 journal babe so the tour is like a financial disaster but they get all this press and then later

spk_0 Thompson taught us like we never understood why Kaufman made the band tour Canada until the truth

spk_0 came out in a lawsuit later he had sold a portion of his stake in the band to a kid in Michigan

spk_0 named Bill Larson who had pulled his parents life savings about twenty five thousand dollars so

spk_0 that he could own five percent of Molly crew and in order for Kaufman to collect the money he had

spk_0 to send the band up north to tour so how it's right or off after that that Molly crew get new

spk_0 management this is when Doug Taylor and Doc McGee come into the picture their manager right now was

spk_0 like the one that can get the good cook right yeah it was just the construction guy Alan Kaufman I

spk_0 think was the same they had also met with Cliff Bernstein which is really interesting Cliff Bernstein

spk_0 famously of Q prime who managed Metallica forever but Cliff Bernstein again managed Metallica forever

spk_0 trying to promote it kind of sabotaging it but then a new guy came on as head of an R at

spk_0 electra named Tom Wormen he had produced Ted Nuget and cheap tricks he was really into Molly crew

spk_0 so he kind of changed that too fast for love ends up selling a hundred thousand copies so

spk_0 everything's going good until a new guy comes into run electra Bob Kras now he fires Tom Wormen

spk_0 he decides rock music is dead doesn't want any rock bands on the label has the Molly crew video

spk_0 taken off MTV for being embarrassing the one you sent me that you were like you have to watch this

spk_0 shoulder was so fucked up that he got on pain pills the way these guys were partying is not it's

spk_0 not human people don't party the way these motherfuckers were partying well also it's like we'll get

spk_0 into it the consequences are extreme well but also not as extreme as they would be now like the

spk_0 consequences are actually quite fucking light like yeah you could crash your Porsche into a fucking

spk_0 girls were streaming in and out of the studio getting fucked with microphones in the control room

spk_0 bottles in the kitchen and broom handles in the closet because we were running out of ideas of

spk_0 what to do with them see there's parts of the dirt where I was like gun in my mouth I would not

spk_0 admit these things that you guys admitted in print all I'm saying is this is a great book and it is

spk_0 an amazing yassie and I are not condoning this behavior before saying what a fucking time capsule

spk_0 care about it looks the kill is funny and so I love it but it's so stupid but I really love two

spk_0 young to fall in love what do you like about to young to fall in love well you're killing me your

spk_0 loves a guillotine why don't you just set me free oh man run for the hills we're both sinners

spk_0 and saints not a woman but a whore I can just taste the hate well now I'm killing you watch your

spk_0 face turn in blue I mean come on and I'm really great it's really great I had a sense of humor do you

spk_0 not but it's really great I I will also point out we mentioned it lightly but Nikki six is also

spk_0 obsessed with arosmith obsessed they're not yet a man just a punk in the street or

spk_0 I maybe it's just just a punk in the street that is a line from the song last child by arosmith

spk_0 also we were talking about shout out the devil earlier and I didn't mention this but there's

spk_0 there's lyrics that say my head spinning round and round but in the seasons of wither those are

spk_0 round and round and seasons of wither are two arosmith song titles this is a lot of homage going on

spk_0 here to arosmith there's a definite pattern that where there's like two or three songs on an album

spk_0 that are just so fire that we're talking about them 40 years later but it's not like a 12 for 12

spk_0 kind of situation no it's really not I'll just mention knock them dead kid which I don't think

spk_0 is a great song but it was written on a night that Nikki was arrested for getting into a brawl

spk_0 I think outside the whiskey that ended up including several cops and he lead a forward had to hawk

spk_0 her firebird oh man uh trans am to bail him out and then he got out and went and played a show

spk_0 and then wrote the lyrics of the song

spk_0 first of all two things that we will continue to say on this program we don't condone this behavior

spk_0 and also we love and respect Robert Criscal for all time but he does not understand heavy metal

spk_0 it's the bad behavior paralleling what the music is and it's the energy and those things I love

spk_0 this is what Chris Habib said you know what it is I think boys in the 80s were very sensitive to

spk_0 being marketed to and when they out grew WWF all of a sudden Molly Crew was right there that's

spk_0 actually so genius because WWF is also exactly like right theater the dress the makeup and they were

spk_0 so much messier than entrepreneurs like Deesnider and Jean Simmons but something there felt smart

spk_0 and playful like when Alice Cooper did the Muppet show and it didn't feel like Molly Crew wanted

spk_0 to sell us anything they were very much just inhabiting everything wild and unhinged about that

spk_0 moment and taking us along for the ride it was like watching life cells of the rich and famous

spk_0 like it presayed cribs or something yeah and it also I will say definitely that as uh

spk_0 young person a very young person at this time I was obsessed with WWF you know until like when

spk_0 when I I just like oh my god we would go to WF things all the time like the first time I walked into

spk_0 WWF match we were late and it was the iron chic against Andre the giant and I just remember I

spk_0 remember that so much and I also remember like a crazy drunk man being kicked out and I was like

spk_0 with a giant beer like a crazy fan that's gone insane getting kicked out and I was like this is it

spk_0 like this is so fun you know and the variety and like the chaos was so cool and also like I'm just

spk_0 having a thought he didn't say this but it is making me think of like I mean think about how boys

spk_0 in the 80s were raised on comic books and superheroes that's also very you know like kind of a

spk_0 similar over the top experience of a different kind of masculinity that's like I keep coming back

spk_0 to the word theater but it is theater right what's WWF theater what's Molly Crout theater you know

spk_0 but it's also like really messy theater that's like drugged out to the max and I like this idea of

spk_0 it's it's not that's like marketed yeah it's not contrived or like it's real it's funny because I

spk_0 think the argument would could be made and it was made by the 90s that it was contrived and it

spk_0 was marketed and it was like but then it's like you when you recontextualize it to think about it

spk_0 through the lens of like like a kiss or even like a Fleetwood Mac which was sort of like dominating

spk_0 prior it was so fucked up in chaotic and messy that it couldn't have possibly been structured

spk_0 to sell records in that way am I making sense you're making sense I mean like at the very least

spk_0 it was real danger real sex they were walking the walk-in talking the talk but it was like so

spk_0 deranged and yeah they were making so much money off of it but it felt authentic isn't

spk_0 ironic though that they made their best music and the first album and then continued to like have

spk_0 a big cultural impact in my humble opinion but you think just kind of gets worse and worse

spk_0 respectfully with all the respect in my heart I still think why where's the

spk_0 the I know that's I'm saying you just like track album one track one like if you watch and I highly

spk_0 recommend it if you're having trouble understanding what what Molly crew is and what we're talking

spk_0 about watch early live videos of them because like it's undeniable how much energy and power and like

spk_0 electricity is happening on that stage regardless of whether the songs appeal to you like

spk_0 they definitely had it you know yeah rolling stone also only gave it two stars they said like most

spk_0 self-styled bad boy bands Molly crew look meaner than they sound with their layers of leather and

spk_0 carefully applied makeup their looks suggest all the implied violence required of teeny-bopper anti-heroes

spk_0 but the music the crew used to back up that image is surprisingly mild mannered it's loud sure

spk_0 but that's about as close as to dangerous as it gets motley crew's version of rock and roll is

spk_0 such a careful distillation of black Sabbath kiss and other arena giants that you'd almost think

spk_0 it was developed by MTV's marketing staff in short originality is not this group's long suit but

spk_0 then who expected it to be the whole point of bands like motley crew is to provide cheap thrills

spk_0 to jaded teens and that's where the album ultimately disappoints I read that not because I agree

spk_0 with it but to just point out that critically motley crew is pretty much never supported

spk_0 they critics never like them they never say positive things about them they keep growing

spk_0 on popularity and money and and success commercially but they're never critically given any respect

spk_0 it's so funny because when you read these bad reviews of this album I really understand them

spk_0 but I do not care I don't care if it's schlock I love bad taste I love bad the right bad stuff that's

spk_0 like I mean we all do you know I think you've nailed the appeal of motley crew I think if you pulled

spk_0 the people that were at the shower the double tour and they were like you asked them they weren't

spk_0 they'd be like I don't care I like it that's like oh it's like I don't care I don't care that it's

spk_0 fundamentally or like technically not great I like it yeah and also you guys are fucking losers you

spk_0 don't get it pentagram sex devil yeah blah blah blah like yeah this is not this is not makeup

spk_0 well this is not about like talent like musical talent okay dorks you know this is about some other

spk_0 shit okay dorks it's not about good song structure it's not about writing good songs this is

spk_0 this is about the whole experience which it kind of was yeah at some point after the release

spk_0 of shout out the double niki's mother is institutionalized for a mental breakdown damn I know and

spk_0 when niki visits her the first thing she asks him is did you write looks that kill about me

spk_0 and niki was like I was floored there were so many things I wanted to say to her so many

spk_0 things I wanted her to say to me but that wasn't one of them we hardly spoke we were both too proud

spk_0 or stubborn to apologize for anything so after this he goes home and gets more into drugs he wants

spk_0 my mother I didn't want a home anymore I became crazier and more reckless subconsciously putting

spk_0 myself on the same self destructive path my mother had been on my rock and roll fantasy wasn't just

spk_0 about success and decadence and rebellion anymore it was also about pain and death I was sure I was

spk_0 gonna die before I was 25 whoo dark Molly goes on tour opening for Aussie Osborne on the bark of the

spk_0 moon tour niki said that they were like oh we're kind of you know he's gonna be like kiss he's

spk_0 gonna think you know we're too crazy he's the craziest so oh no honey he is the crazy he was like

spk_0 you will never out crazy me bitch and I don't even fucking try as this is memorialized in the dirt

spk_0 film by the amazing and I'm gonna say one of the only well cast people in that film Tony Cavalero he's

spk_0 amazing Tony Cavalero is so fucking funny he's incredible as Aussie I'll say you know what you've

spk_0 never seen I'm just gonna say horribly cast read the book just read the book is great I'm like

spk_0 wire half the actors British why am I watching like a man who has the most luscious lips and I

spk_0 honestly a gorgeous man played niki six in an British man and she's like I'm like what am I

spk_0 looking at here and also the story is so good with so many details and it's flattened into like

spk_0 a 90 minute Netflix film it's just like it sounds terrible it's brutal babe it is brutal the guy who

spk_0 plays mic mars is actually really good but also British randomly or Irish maybe okay back to this

spk_0 so Aussie's insane they have the best time apparently on this tour though the band starts discussing

spk_0 the possibility of replacing mic mars because he's old and maybe also not the most insanely

spk_0 technically proficient guitarist which again none of them work except for Tommy there's a man

spk_0 did there's some friction it doesn't go anywhere yeah Aussie Osborne's base at the time Bob

spk_0 Daisley was he heard them talking about it and he was like do not try to fix something that isn't

spk_0 broken like don't do it then they're invited to take part in the 1984 monsters of rock festival

spk_0 supporting Van Halen and AC DC this is really just for me to mention that Molly Cruz so insane that

spk_0 they're like getting so fucked up out of their minds niki bit Eddie Van Halen on his stomach and

spk_0 Vince bit him on his hand and got screamed out by his wife the saying don't touch my husband's

spk_0 hand ballie weren't only and Tommy Lee bit Malcolm young from AC they're just biting people like hard

spk_0 like breaking the skin down Van Halen and AC DC did not think this was funny they basically tried

spk_0 to get them kicked off the tour but they couldn't because the band was so popular so the promoter

spk_0 basically came up with this solution Molly crew would go into their trailer right when they got

spk_0 to the venue and then I mean this is what I read I really hope it's true he had a crane come and

spk_0 lift the trailer up off the ground so that they were not able to leave their trailer until it was

spk_0 time for them to play so they couldn't bite anybody wow so good boys gone wild boys gone wild doc

spk_0 dock McGee said we had to apologize every single day of this tour to everybody and we had to pay a

spk_0 15,000 dollar deposit to each hotel before they would allow the band to stay there I've never

spk_0 trashed a hotel room y'all see I don't quite see what the what the fuss is about because I'm like

spk_0 I just like a beautiful hotel room you know me too I that I don't totally get that either I've

spk_0 definitely done self destructive things when I was in my personal Molly crew phase but I don't

spk_0 remember ever trashing any hotel rooms the drugs alcohol and sex I understand and and have

spk_0 experienced first time of course just the trashing of the hotel room to the level of

spk_0 disgusting these guys did but also it's just an observation I don't have anything against it

spk_0 no I think I think why rock stars do this is they're like testing the boundaries of their fame

spk_0 they're testing the boundaries of their importance you know like they're like how much can I get

spk_0 away with is I'm only speaking from the outside but it does kind of feel like that you know

spk_0 yeah yeah in June there's this like really insane article about the band published in hit

spk_0 predator magazine and that is the biggest issue of hit predator magazine that's ever existed I

spk_0 couldn't find the actual article but I found an interview about the article and the person was

spk_0 like oh that was your biggest issue why and the editor guy was like controversy Molly crew is

spk_0 hot as hell and it's also word of mouth I first met Molly crew back in December in Mexico Vince

spk_0 grabs me by the arm and says come with me so I go into the room and the other three guys have this

spk_0 young woman spreading along the bed naked and they're going at her with a wine bottle and I printed it

spk_0 I tried not to make it quite that wrong but I did run it and the word of mouth got around

spk_0 just like you talk about a band who is into the devil the band will sell more copies this thing

spk_0 happened to get out there and caused a bit of a stir seven eleven was gonna take us off the shelves

spk_0 and it just happened to be the right issue at the right time there you go testing the limits of

spk_0 their popularity yes exactly now it's December 8th 1984 this is a bad day are you'll be the worst day

spk_0 in Molly crew history oh no this is the day that there's a big party I believe the party was several

spk_0 days long at Vince's house where Mick Tommy Vince and the guys from Hanoi rocks who were in town

spk_0 were all raging together was like a four day barbecue and booze bender and they ran out of beer

spk_0 then said it had started out as a barbecue to celebrate the kickoff of our third album but nobody

spk_0 wanted to go home Mick was there I guess which was unusual but so that's like the also another crazy

spk_0 part of the story where like Mick gets super wasted and wanders off into the ocean like maybe trying

spk_0 to die but he doesn't really say that but then he doesn't die he just like passes out and is like

spk_0 washed up on the beach like a beach dwellers like passed out and misses all of this so

spk_0 Tommy said Vince wanted to show off his new pantera car so he asked who wanted to make a beer run

spk_0 razzle Nicholas razzle dingley of Hanoi rocks volunteered first and the two of them disappeared

spk_0 out the door the liquor store was only a few blocks away but they were gone for a long ass time

spk_0 then Vince said that night the booze ran out I had just bought a 72 Ford Pantera which is a fast

spk_0 beautiful car razzle wanted to see what it was like to ride in it was bright red on the outside

spk_0 with a sleek black interior we were both fucked up and shouldn't have driven especially since the

spk_0 store was only a couple blocks away and we could have easily walked but we just didn't give it a

spk_0 second thought razzle wore high tops leather pants and a frilly shirt a 24 seven rock and roll god

spk_0 he wouldn't ever be caught in the jeans and a Hawaiian shirt I was wearing we squeezed into the

spk_0 parking lot picked up a couple hundred dollars in beer and liquor to keep the party going the car

spk_0 had no back seat so razzle held the bags of booze in his lap in the passenger seat on the way

spk_0 home we were driving along a hilly road that wound up the coast it was full of little dips and hills

spk_0 and out as I was heading up on a slight incline there was a small bend ahead just before the top

spk_0 of the hill it was dark and for some reason the streets were wet since I hadn't been outside that

spk_0 night I wasn't sure if it had been raining lightly or if the streets had just been washed as I

spk_0 approached the bend I noticed the gutter on the side of the road was full and was draining water

spk_0 and sewage as the car rounded the curve I shifted into second gear for the final stretch home

spk_0 as I did so the wheels chirped and the car suddenly slid sideways into the water to the left into

spk_0 the lane for oncoming traffic I tried to maneuver out of the skid but as I struggled with the steering

spk_0 wheel a pair of lights board out on me something was coming over the top of the hill and heading

spk_0 straight for us that was the last thing I saw before I was knocked unconscious when my head cleared

spk_0 razzle was lying in my lap I forced my mouth to smile for him as if to say thank god we're all

spk_0 right but he didn't respond oh like really like breaks my heart like it makes me want to cry

spk_0 right now like it's so awful so awful I hate also that this it just I feel so much for

spk_0 razzle and first family that like because it's motley crew like this was a real person with a

spk_0 full life and like a band and like everything and he's sort of been reduced to a footnote in the

spk_0 motley crew story and I hate that you know like it really it really upsets me thinking about that

spk_0 because that's kind of like what how he's spoken about yes I mean that's the tragedy of like early

spk_0 death and the two people in the car coming down that died oh my god yeah one was in a coma and yeah

spk_0 two young people you know they're biased ruined apparently Vince Neal had been going 65 and a 25

spk_0 yeah it's about his breathalyzer read point one seven quite high point 08 as you know is the legal

spk_0 limit at the police station I guess he kept asking for razzle and an officer finally just told him

spk_0 your friend's dead he is at home and Tommy and Vince was married at this time his wife tried to

spk_0 comfort him and people keep calling and then his manager's like the police are gonna arrest you

spk_0 for vehicular manslaughter so he went to the station and turned himself in the people in the car

spk_0 that he had hit that you just mentioned they also were real people with real lives and names Daniel

spk_0 Smithers and Lisa Hogan they were a young couple Hogan suffered brain damage and went into a coma

spk_0 Daniel Smithers was in traction apparently producer Rob just told me that Lisa Hogan at the time

spk_0 was a recovering addict and she had gotten clean and then this happened their parents were at

spk_0 the preliminary hearing Vince Neal said as I stood there I knew I should be in jail for what

spk_0 happened even if it was technically an accident I mean well yeah it was technically an accident

spk_0 but because you were arrested going 65 if I had been just an ordinary guy without

spk_0 fame or money I probably would have been locked up on the spot instead I was released on a

spk_0 $2,500 bail until the trial so their manager his managers are like you need to go to rehab

spk_0 and the Vince Neal even in this even after this he's like I'm not an alcoholic I told him I'm

spk_0 not an alcoholic there's no way I was going to be treated like I had a problem I wasn't a

spk_0 whine-o lying in a gutter but the court required it so he goes to a 30 day rehab detox intense

spk_0 therapy thing and he said I'd gotten maybe one phone call from Tommy or Nikki when I first checked

spk_0 him but that was it no one in the band called her visited after that they either weren't being

spk_0 supportive or were being told to keep their distance I was alone and they were probably moving on

spk_0 without me so Nikki was an intel on this happened he was in Martinique when he came back to America

spk_0 he's he came to Miami and a man at the airport ran up to him and was like Nikki Nikki your

spk_0 singer is dead and he was like what the fuck and he called Doc McGee and was like is Vince dead

spk_0 and Doc McGee's like no here's what happened it explains what happens and Nikki's like I took the

spk_0 next plane to Los Angeles and went to the shit shack I shared with Robin Crosby I called Michael

spk_0 Monroe and Andy McCoy from Hanoi Rocks and we all disappeared into a strange intense friendship

spk_0 bonded in death drugs and self-destruction Vince was on the news every day and I was so junct

spk_0 out I'd asked why is Vince on the news and someone would say that's for the manslaughter charge

spk_0 and I'd just say oh yeah and shoot up again Nikki is not on earth at this point obviously

spk_0 and I'm sure like this is just one more thing that makes him want to check out he said Vince was

spk_0 my bandmate my best friend my brother we had just finished the most successful tour that a young

spk_0 band could possibly have that early in its career we had experienced some of the best times

spk_0 together we had shared everything from my girlfriends to Tommy's wife to the room service groupies

spk_0 and I didn't call him I didn't visit him I didn't support him in any way whatsoever I was as usual

spk_0 only interested in indulging myself why wasn't I there for him what was the reason

spk_0 where the drugs that powerful when I thought about Vince it wasn't with pity it was with anger

spk_0 as if he was the bad guy and the rest of the band were innocent victims of his wrongdoing

spk_0 but we all did drugs and drove drunk it could have happened to any of us I thought that was like

spk_0 an incredibly generous and true and like valuable thing to say you know like I didn't see anyone

spk_0 else really say that and like it's completely 1 million percent true like while it did happen to

spk_0 Vince they were all behaving this way and it was just the luck of the draw that it happened to Vince

spk_0 and not telling the others absolutely and they all kept doing it which is that's the part where I

spk_0 started I was like this happened and you all kept doing the fuck shit like that like

spk_0 oh it's just and now it's a very before and after this moment you know it's very

spk_0 the rest of the rest of the the rest of the story is like everything after this moment the party is

spk_0 paradise is lost paradise is lost for sure I mean paradise kind of probably left the building when

spk_0 Nicky started doing heroin but also like this this is like the real nail nail in it I want to say that

spk_0 like again I know I'm keep big up in Nicky I just think this is so important because like he fine

spk_0 okay he said that it could have happened to any of us later right but also at the time

spk_0 1986 he did an interview with Kering magazine and he said the same thing he said the funny thing

spk_0 about the accident it's kind of ironic Tommy got in a really bad car accident 90 miles per hour

spk_0 rolled over nine times off the freeway he was fucked up really bad drunk I smashed a portion to

spk_0 a telephone pole and did this shit he shows his scar on the shoulder and I was really drunk

spk_0 and Vince he's going up the street and there's a wet spot with moss growing on the water and he's

spk_0 got a powerful car he's giving a bit of gas and the car hits it and someone dies and Vince

spk_0 was not as drunk as me or Tommy but no one dies in our cars hold on he's going 65 you know what

spk_0 he's not doing going into second gear he's going into fourth gear wasted let's say you're going

spk_0 35 up this hill you're going in third gear and then you're like hitting the brakes a little to

spk_0 go a little more responsibly around the curve then you would turn into second gear got it but he

spk_0 didn't you're not you're not in second gear at 65 that's for sure this part of the book is a bit like

spk_0 Jesus fucking Christ but you know what it's it's it's it's uh yeah because it's also like it's

spk_0 just bad because it just doesn't stop man I'm like the party's not over even if no one responds

spk_0 then he also says like you know what I love to drink I love to be fucked up but I'm not going to

spk_0 drive anymore I think we should tell our fans don't drink and drive not don't drink do whatever

spk_0 you want to do man shoot up heroin I don't care do it have fun it's your life but don't get in a

spk_0 car when you do it I think we do continue to drive around but you know good for you for trying to

spk_0 hold the hold the line in the press me all through all this Nikki still writing songs for the next

spk_0 album how I don't know in a row how you could be so productive junkie like that but oh yeah he's

spk_0 like immobile heroin addict writing the next album literally like reading animal farm my George

spk_0 Orwell and like writing songs and like nodding out I don't know but yeah then that the next year

spk_0 is when they start 1985 so all of that happened in I said December right and then they start

spk_0 making that album in January which is again really crazy because it's like this should happen

spk_0 a month ago like thens meal is like probably I think still in detox when they start going to the studio

spk_0 it's just like you could this is a this is another Motley crew through line they never take a break

spk_0 like this would have been an ideal time to like take six months off yeah but they don't they go

spk_0 straight into the studio to make theater a pain I know I have emerged as the world's foremost Nikki six

spk_0 fans but I'm just obsessed with them he said every time I came home in the studio I opened the door

spk_0 and there would be people everywhere in the front room of his house listening to music shooting up

spk_0 and fucking I'd walk past them because I didn't know who any of them were and collapsed into bed my

spk_0 room was littered with needles and books I was reading about the relationship between theater politics

spk_0 and culture from the olden days when entertainers who failed to make a king laugh would be put to death

spk_0 to newer ideas like Antonin Arno's essay the theater of cruelty Nikki six is getting home from the

spk_0 studio people are fucking in his living room he's brush gently brushing aside the used needles

spk_0 off his bed so he could page through Antonin Arno's essay about the theater of cruelty which is

spk_0 basically what he named this album after and it's also very hilarious that they were going to call

spk_0 it entertainment or death and Doug Thaler their manager tattooed that name on his arm and then a

spk_0 week later they were like sorry actually now it's theater of pain yeah theater of pain such a good name

spk_0 he stole the title he said either from the essay or a girl he dated a couple of times named

spk_0 Diana Cancer who was in the band 45 grave real heads know who 45 grave is for a crime game was

spk_0 like an OG sunset strip like punk e mentally rock ability band just a quick side barn Antonin

spk_0 Arno he was a French actor playwright and essayist it's part of the surrealist movement but he was

spk_0 actually kicked out by Andre Bertrand because he was too individualist and his whole thing was about

spk_0 that theater should be a primitive ceremonial experience intended to liberate the human subconscious

spk_0 and reveal man to himself it was about shock seeing the baseness in the world this is where

spk_0 our friend Niki six took his influences for the theater of cruelty well look at the cover

spk_0 it's a good cover yeah I mean it's it's a good cover I'm sorry I'm a sucker for the the masks of

spk_0 the theater of the laughing sad mask I mean is it super 80s and a bit cheese yeah I love it also

spk_0 because they're talking about themselves they're in a world of pain they're in a world of pain

spk_0 any but they have to entertain they're chasing pleasure born to entertain living in pain chasing the

spk_0 dragon all the powders all the all the babes people are dead yes RIP Razzle I'm gonna tell you

spk_0 something the vibe of making this album was very bad and niki said in the studio no one like the

spk_0 sounds they were getting out of their microphones based their guitars but we were too loaded to do

spk_0 anything about it I had only written about five songs and we recorded everyone then we had to

spk_0 plunder past demos just to scrape together a full album home sweet home was one of the first

spk_0 songs we put to tape and I'm correct mel in that home sweet home came from like Tommy playing

spk_0 around on the piano like a little piano riff yes so I interviewed Tommy Lee and niki six I think a

spk_0 year ago in LA amazing experience just a fun moment it was exactly a year ago I don't think I get

spk_0 that star struck that often I was I was like keep it together just keep keep the questions coming

spk_0 and like chill with the compliments and get out of here but anyway did Vince Neil say

spk_0 he was too busy I don't know Vince Neil was not part of the program that day and but I do remember

spk_0 niki telling me that it started with Tommy like tinkering on the thing and then it all came from

spk_0 that and I think it came fast and they just were really miserable and missed home because they've

spk_0 been on tour crushing you know arenas around the world and life sucks

spk_0 okay so basically they're in the studio they're fucked up they can barely get it together yeah he's

spk_0 niki said that too we were stranded in a lone and desperate and confused bag of bonds

spk_0 yearning for some sense of security but we recorded it so poorly and also basically Vince is like

spk_0 persona non grata at the studio at this point like they are very much like icing him due to the

spk_0 terrible misfortune that has been fallen prior to this yeah they don't know how to really they

spk_0 I think they all have guilt they all have survivors guilt and they don't really have the skills to

spk_0 heal together or separately you know so they're all sort of like breaking up and on there's

spk_0 splintering off to try to self-medicate self-heal find fun it's rough and Vince it's ironic because I

spk_0 think that the vocals on home sweet home well first of all this is a one this is a one song album

spk_0 home sweet home and his vocals are great on it and I feel like these are the vocals that Motley

spk_0 crew is most famous for as a vocals right and but he can barely keep it together in the studio

spk_0 here's the thing from what I understood from the press at the time this is seen as they're like

spk_0 shift towards glam metal and people kind of like pushed against us like okay this is what

spk_0 Kering said this is 1986 some say Motley cruise albums are progressively wimping out what do you say to

spk_0 them and Nikki said fuck you man what do you want us to do do like Ted Nuget and record cat scratch fever

spk_0 8000 times we played the piano on heavy metal cuts like knock them dead people say they don't hear it

spk_0 because they don't know it's there there's fucking grand piano all the way through it and fucking

spk_0 horns synthesizers harmonica's so we take a song like home sweet home we put a piano at the

spk_0 beginning of it and it's like oh they're not heavy metal anymore okay this is what I want to ask you

spk_0 about though then he goes but we were never heavy metal we were always like sleazy the difference

spk_0 as we could barely play in the beginning and now we become a pretty good band what do you think

spk_0 this means the distinction between we were never heavy metal we were actually sleazy because I

spk_0 feel like that sounds really on point I am not a historian of rock like you are but I like what

spk_0 they're saying here and I think that I agree I think that's kind of I mean they weren't heavy

spk_0 metal that first album is kind of punky with like a little few too many guitar solos to be total

spk_0 literally just walked around watching Vince to make sure he didn't drink and like knocking

spk_0 like meet with the DA and stuff and he said in order to avoid a trial the DA advised me to plead guilty

spk_0 or I think his lawyer advised him to plead guilty to vehicular manslaughter and strike a compromise

spk_0 he figured it's the people drinking at my house were mostly mostly in Molly crew in Hanoi rocks the

spk_0 party could be explained as a business meeting and we could pay damages to the families through the

spk_0 band's liability insurance because there was no way I could afford them on my own this is why the

spk_0 family has agreed to what everyone saw as such a light sentence 30 days in jail 2.6 million in

spk_0 restitution to them and 200 hours of community service in addition my lawyer told the DA I could

spk_0 do more lecturing in school and on the road than I could on my ass in prison where I wouldn't be a

spk_0 benefit to anyone could you see this happening now I don't think this would happen now like I don't

spk_0 Doug Thaler set up the making of this album one side of nicky's control freak nature was that whenever

spk_0 Molly was in the studio he wanted to be there every single minute of the night and day but on

spk_0 he did come in he was in no shape to do anything he would just be making no sense that's when i

spk_0 started to realize how ill he was somehow this album sold four million copies and picked

spk_0 this is also a tour where he calls to the hotel and complains about the fans that are banging on

spk_0 his window in the middle of the night except that he was on the 26th floor yeah the tour finally ends in

spk_0 japan everyone goes home but niki's like i'm not going home i want to go to the rest of asia

spk_0 and do drugs presumably mr udo and docker like what we can't let him go on is insane so they have to

spk_0 go with him and he like is so insane there like makes them go to like a prostitute brothel thing and

spk_0 shoot was like bro i'm married like they finally just leave him alone with a translator in Hong Kong

spk_0 Tommy said actually thought deciding to go to hong kong was niki's one of niki's more sober moments

spk_0 he told me he wanted to buy some furniture for his home he seemed really sincere about wanting to

spk_0 go to hong kong and get amazing deals on furniture wow Tommy was just like what he wanted to buy

spk_0 beautiful furniture for his well then said when niki announced he wasn't coming back to la but

spk_0 going to hong kong i couldn't have cared less i didn't give it a second thought just said fine

spk_0 have a nice time bye we weren't close in any way and i wanted to keep my distance from him because he

spk_0 was fucking bad news so niki is in hong kong i want to point out that he hasn't showered the entire

spk_0 junkie so we called him i was so screaming drunk that i couldn't even find the floor to fall on

spk_0 so Sally said guns had two sweets slash was in one and Steven Adler was in the other with niki and

spk_0 phoned vince neal so the limo driver calls vince neal as like niki's dead and vince said

spk_0 it brought him to tears and he never used to cry then anyway Sally keeps giving niki

spk_0 the mouth to mouth of the paramedics get there and they're like basically kept him going although

spk_0 he's declared clinically dead on the way to the hospital however and this is drunk ties in the

spk_0 movie as well the paramedic is a motley crew fan and he's like absolutely the fuck not is niki six

spk_0 dying in my fucking ambulance i love motley crew let's fucking go we gotta get this man back

spk_0 and gives him two shots of adrenaline and niki's back damn i know this is crazy yeah the media

spk_0 starts reporting that he's dead the suit sayer the suit sayer knew what's up babe this should

spk_0 book that bob timmins it got in him under his bed wise throwing well his drugs and is like okay i'm

spk_0 have canceled the european leg of their tour second they were either gonna straighten up or find

spk_0 new management we presented a united front and he admitted that he needed to check into a hospital

spk_0 asked him to said he was in of course vince stubborn and denial dragged his heels and waffles and

spk_0 mick just gave us a funny look so basically they all agree that they will all go to rehab in order

spk_0 it's not anyone the doctor feel good tour wild ruling is over everyone has relapsed the band is

spk_0 negotiating a new deal with electra Vince is really mad at this point in terms of partying like

spk_0 coming to rehearsals because he just like is not being productive or helpful at rehearsals

spk_0 so he goes on a bender after they tell him not to come and then he goes to rehab again

spk_0 and Doug Thaler was like oh we all flew down to meet with Vince we encouraged him to make the band

spk_0 of priority and he swore he would and blah blah okay they put out their first uh greatest hits

spk_0 decade of decadence 81 to 91 that's an October and then in December they go back to the studio Vince

spk_0 just does not show up he stops coming it all comes to a head one day there's a terrible storm in

spk_0 LA it caused crazy floods that swept over the winter of rewain flooded the subalbidabase and killed

spk_0 six people but still Tommy and Nicky drove two hours each to get to the rehearsal in Burbank

spk_0 and make even longer because I think we make live in the South Bay and Vince who lived

spk_0 much closer to Burbank just never showed up they keep calling and keep calling keep getting a busy

spk_0 signal and after four hours of waiting for him they had their tormentors send him a facts

spk_0 say get your ass to rehearsal they faxed his ass and 15 minutes later he called the studio and said oh

spk_0 sorry the phone lines were down and Nicky said that sent me off the phone lines were down then how

spk_0 the fuck did the facts go through you had the phone off the hook because you didn't want a fucking come

spk_0 in all of us drove through floods to get here and you couldn't even be bothered and Vince was like dude

spk_0 take it easy I thought rehearsal was canceled anyway with the flooding and Nicky was like we waited

spk_0 for him and then someone in the studio said they had seen Vince out completely wasted at 3am

spk_0 previous night whether it was true or not it didn't matter the conversation had already taken on

spk_0 a mutinist tone except for Nick we were all slipping off the wagon but Vince was the only one who

spk_0 was letting it affect his work who was getting caught all the time and he was constantly lying about

spk_0 it by the time he arrived the scene was already planted our minds that he was holding us back maybe

spk_0 Vince had walked in and apologized for staying out so late the night before and sleeping through

spk_0 rehearsal everything would have been fine but he didn't they have a huge blowout fight babe Vince says

spk_0 I think this album is stupid anyways I hate it it's not going well no he storms out this is when Vince

spk_0 is out of the band Nicky says he says he was fired I say he was quit he quit but whatever he's out

spk_0 I know the feeling of being thrown out of a band no no no just being like I don't go fuck dude I'm so
