spk_0
Hello and welcome to Band Splane.
spk_0
I am your host, Yassie Solic.
spk_0
This is a show where I invite an expert guest on to help me explain a cult band or iconic
spk_0
artist.
spk_0
Today's episode is about Motley Crew.
spk_0
If you've never heard Motley Crew, I guess you've never been to a strip club band.
spk_0
You guys are my guest today.
spk_0
The editor in chief of interview magazine, maybe you've heard of it.
spk_0
And repeat Band Splane guest.
spk_0
Mr. Mel Enberg.
spk_0
Welcome to the show.
spk_0
Welcome back to the show, Mel.
spk_0
Yassie, thanks for having me back for Motley Crew.
spk_0
It's an honor and a privilege.
spk_0
I couldn't be happier.
spk_0
There's not a single person on earth.
spk_0
I'd rather be talking to you besides actually Mr. Nikki Sixham's all.
spk_0
I'm fucking pumped.
spk_0
Thanks.
spk_0
Can you before we dive in, before we dive into the dirt, if you allow me, can you just
spk_0
tell me briefly about your personal history with the crew?
spk_0
Absolutely, Yassie.
spk_0
So, like, my love affair with Motley Crew probably started when I read the dirt, which is
spk_0
the best fucking book.
spk_0
But like, as a Gen X MTV obsessed kid, I saw all the videos because they were on non-fucking
spk_0
stop.
spk_0
Motley Crew was the biggest band in the world.
spk_0
It wasn't like my rock thing per se as like an 11 year old.
spk_0
That would have been Guns of Roses.
spk_0
But then later, I read the dirt and that book's so fucking good that I reconsidered
spk_0
Motley Crew.
spk_0
I bought like the records.
spk_0
I got really into them.
spk_0
And now I'm just a fan.
spk_0
I fucking love them.
spk_0
Yeah, you're just a fan.
spk_0
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
spk_0
And I love the mess.
spk_0
I love the disaster.
spk_0
We'll get into it.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Oh, there's a lot of mess and disaster.
spk_0
Shockingly, you know, as you know, I'm a professor of rock music history.
spk_0
I had never read the dirt or even seen the cursed film.
spk_0
We'll get into that later until this prepping for this thing.
spk_0
I don't know why.
spk_0
I guess much like yourself or not that much like yourself.
spk_0
Motley Crew videos were a little before my MTV time.
spk_0
So I didn't know much about them or care or have any interest.
spk_0
And it never occurred to me to read the book.
spk_0
Even when the movie came out and everyone was talking about it again, I was like, I guess
spk_0
I'll probably do an episode eventually.
spk_0
I'll save it for that.
spk_0
And this is a fucking insane text.
spk_0
It's incredible.
spk_0
Oh, God.
spk_0
Where do we begin?
spk_0
We're going to like parse it throughout.
spk_0
Like, I mean, that's my source text for this.
spk_0
Although, obviously, I'm a completist.
spk_0
So I did read both of Nikki Six's memoirs as well as Tommy Lee's book.
spk_0
Yeah, I was out here in London trying to catch a man sitting in cafes casually reading
spk_0
Tommy Lee's autobiography, which you know is really giving.
spk_0
Let me go talk to that woman.
spk_0
No, not one single man approached me.
spk_0
They were like, it's giving my dick not big enough to go talk to that lady over there.
spk_0
It was, I did it to myself.
spk_0
It was absolutely chastity belt.
spk_0
I don't have it in front of me, but there's a porn star playmate wrote a book that heavily
spk_0
mentions Tommy Lee.
spk_0
I read those excerpts of that too.
spk_0
There's a lot of texts, but the dirt is the main one.
spk_0
I just want to say before we begin, like Molly Crew is so pivotal to what we now call,
spk_0
I guess, glam metal, right?
spk_0
It was that we could hear metal, glam metal ostensibly not the first glam metal band.
spk_0
I think you could, you would have to say that's twisted sister because they were a bit
spk_0
earlier.
spk_0
That's like a 70s band, but they minted it.
spk_0
Like they made it a thing.
spk_0
I did not realize until until reading these books that dude looks like a lady by Arasmith
spk_0
apparently is about Vince Neal.
spk_0
Did you know that?
spk_0
I didn't know that it makes a lot of sense.
spk_0
It makes a lot of sense.
spk_0
And then also money for nothing and chicks for free by Dyer Straits.
spk_0
It's also apparently about Molly Crew.
spk_0
Distracts.
spk_0
Distracts.
spk_0
Part of the cultural landscape.
spk_0
All right.
spk_0
We're going to start with, I'll say it up top, my favorite member of Molly Crew, Niki
spk_0
Six.
spk_0
He was born Frank Carlton Seraphino Farona, Jr. on December 11, 1958.
spk_0
He is a Sagittarius in San Jose, California at 7.11 a.m.
spk_0
As he says in the dirt, I was as early as I could be and even back then, probably still
spk_0
up from the night before.
spk_0
Niki Six was partying in the womb.
spk_0
His mother, Deanna, was an Idaho farm girl who was a gorgeous supermodel.
spk_0
But according to Niki, she quote had an untamable wild streak, completely capricious, prone to
spk_0
random adventure and constitutionally unable to create any pattern of stability.
spk_0
I want to talk a bit about Niki's upbringing because I think it's really important.
spk_0
Niki is the full-crumb of this band.
spk_0
Niki is the spring of creativity of this band.
spk_0
He is the center of the universe as far as Molly Crew is concerned.
spk_0
He said in his book, the first 21, that he had asked his aunt, Harleen, about his birth
spk_0
story.
spk_0
She was like, well, I had to come take care of you for the first two weeks of your life
spk_0
because your mom didn't want to.
spk_0
Which is like so, you know, like it already kind of sets up like where all this, what we get
spk_0
from the story of Molly Crew and all the disastrous self-destruction from Niki kind of has its
spk_0
root from the very beginning.
spk_0
His father, who he got his name from Frank Carlton, Farona, left the family like a year after
spk_0
Niki was born.
spk_0
He also had one full biological sister named Lisa, who we don't have to get super into
spk_0
it, but he kind of didn't know about because she was born down syndrome and went to live
spk_0
away from the family very early.
spk_0
He had a super chaotic childhood, bounce from place to place, back and forth between his
spk_0
like single mother who, according to Niki every time she would get a boyfriend and she
spk_0
would sort of bounce him back to his grandparents.
spk_0
So he lived in LA, lived in Idaho, New Mexico, Lake Tahoe, actual Mexico.
spk_0
He says in his book that in Mexico, he smoked pot and drink whiskey for the first time at
spk_0
age seven years old with his mom and her boyfriend Bernie.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
And he, this is what he said.
spk_0
He said, one thought pot and whiskey hit my system.
spk_0
My mind went kaboom and my whole world changed.
spk_0
The static in my head and my body that I felt all day every day just went away like turning
spk_0
the channel on a TV from only seeing snow and then getting the clearest picture you
spk_0
have ever seen.
spk_0
Everything made perfect sense and I no longer had any fear or sadness or doubt or anger
spk_0
about anything in the world.
spk_0
At that point, everything in my life became about chasing that feeling.
spk_0
To this day, it has never stopped no matter how much work I do on myself.
spk_0
He lived on a hog farm with his grandparents after that maybe like eight or nine.
spk_0
He had to kill rabbits as his job, that's why it doesn't number on a child's head.
spk_0
He became a bitter in his words, a bitter and destructive kid and also a violent one.
spk_0
He was beating up kids that were trying to bully him.
spk_0
The first song that spoke to him according to him in several testimonials is the song
spk_0
Big Bad John by Jimmy Dean.
spk_0
He said he heard on the radio and I lost my mind.
spk_0
It cut through the board of like a scythe.
spk_0
The song had style and attitude.
spk_0
It was cool.
spk_0
I found it.
spk_0
I thought this is what I've been looking for.
spk_0
I phoned the station to so much to request Big Bad John, the DJ told me to stop calling.
spk_0
Big Bad John.
spk_0
Big John.
spk_0
We don't really have to get into the fact that Big Bad John came out like way before he would
spk_0
have been a child listening to the radio.
spk_0
This is a myth, the dirt and the Molly Crew story.
spk_0
We don't have to root in fact.
spk_0
But anyways, he gets super into music.
spk_0
He said he would listen to the radio 10 hours a day, deep purple, Bachman Turner overdrive,
spk_0
Pink Floyd, gets into Sabbath, also bread.
spk_0
This is interesting because we're going to get into it when we get to the first Molly
spk_0
Crew album but like Molly Crew is like low key a 70s band spiritually.
spk_0
Do you not feel that in the beginning?
spk_0
Yes, because they love the dolls.
spk_0
Like they love Iggy Pop.
spk_0
They love cheap trick.
spk_0
They love cheap trick.
spk_0
I think they're a Bowie too.
spk_0
They love Bowie.
spk_0
Yeah, definitely Bowie was a, I mean, New York Dolls was like, their thing.
spk_0
Their thing like the rip.
spk_0
I mean, we're going to get into New York Dolls with it all because that's so important.
spk_0
It's so important that I went back and also read like two New York Dolls books because
spk_0
I was like, oh, now I need to like, I need to get to the source material.
spk_0
Before New York Dolls though, Nikki starts playing football.
spk_0
Nikki's a jock.
spk_0
Nikki is a corn fed tall, broad shouldered, salt of the earth, American boy who plays
spk_0
football.
spk_0
And he said of the sport football gave me the same feeling I get when the band breaks
spk_0
into shout of the devil.
spk_0
I was as proud of wearing that uniform as I was on the day I got my first base.
spk_0
And still, this is very interesting.
spk_0
I never got this.
spk_0
The black stripes that Nikki Six famously wore in his glam makeup are his football stripes.
spk_0
That's what they are.
spk_0
It's so cool.
spk_0
I never knew that.
spk_0
And he said no one got it.
spk_0
But he's like, they were called back to my days playing football.
spk_0
Nikki Six was authentic people.
spk_0
So I don't know what else to say.
spk_0
It's like a real thing.
spk_0
In 1972, I have a bunch of question marks on the dates.
spk_0
Not that it really matters, but he goes to live back with his mother and who had moved
spk_0
it at this point to like a suburb of Seattle.
spk_0
This is where he sees Led Zeppelin for the first time.
spk_0
Plus tons of other bands.
spk_0
Led Zeppelin concert, $5.
spk_0
He said that he had a sign with their name out on the stage when they played their last
spk_0
song, Black Dog, the sign burst into flames.
spk_0
It made a lasting impression.
spk_0
I saw Deep Purple whose album Burn had just come out.
spk_0
Okay, Burn came out in 1974.
spk_0
I'm not going to get into the years, but there's a few.
spk_0
There's some inconsistencies.
spk_0
We're talking about feelings.
spk_0
Exactly.
spk_0
A lot's happened to that brand.
spk_0
You know what I mean?
spk_0
That's so true.
spk_0
He sees T-Rex, he sees KISS.
spk_0
We forgot KISS.
spk_0
KISS is also very important.
spk_0
Then his mother's boyfriend at that time, Ramon, gives him his first acoustic guitar.
spk_0
He said, for that, I am forever grateful.
spk_0
That guitar was the first instrument I'd ever possessed.
spk_0
It turned my whole life upside down.
spk_0
So Ramon taught him a little about guitar, and then he taught himself the rest by playing
spk_0
along to Deep Purple.
spk_0
Me falling in love with Nikki Sixx in real time was a true journey.
spk_0
He said, but I got excited for real when I tried to read words I had written along with
spk_0
the music.
spk_0
Right away, the poems I'd been writing firmed up, they snapped into shape.
spk_0
I had always felt compelled to write notes and stories.
spk_0
If I'd seen a fight in the park or driven past two crashed cars or a Jack and I have tractor
spk_0
trailer, I would have gone home, locked myself in my room and written about it.
spk_0
But now I felt I would be able to tell my stories, set to music they made much more sense
spk_0
and had five times the force.
spk_0
Nikki Sixx is a poet babe.
spk_0
Without a doubt.
spk_0
Without a doubt.
spk_0
So he joins a band and this is why he plays bass because they needed bass.
spk_0
And he said, every day I tried to learn the stuages, sparks, especially the song, this
spk_0
town ain't big enough for both of us and Arrowsmith, great fucking song.
spk_0
This is also where you forget that sparks has been around for a hundred and seven years.
spk_0
So true.
spk_0
Truly one of the most enduring bands of all time.
spk_0
He wasn't good enough for that band that he tried to be in, but then he met a guy named
spk_0
Gaylord outside a show who had a punk band called The Videats.
spk_0
So fucking cool.
spk_0
He said every day after school, I go to his house, Gaylord's house and drink till I passed
spk_0
out listening to the near dolls, MC5 and Blue Cheer.
spk_0
You forgot about Blue Cheer, ain't no cure for the summertime blues.
spk_0
Blue Cheer.
spk_0
Sometimes I wonder what I'm gonna do.
spk_0
No, there ain't no cure for the summertime blues.
spk_0
There'd always be a dozen glammed out in New York dolls looking chicks and dudes there
spk_0
were in fingernail polish and eye makeup.
spk_0
They called us the Wiz Kids, not because we took a lot of speed, which we did, but because
spk_0
we were flashy dressers like David Bowie, whose young Americans album had just come out.
spk_0
Like the mods in England, we'd sell drugs to buy clothes.
spk_0
Young Americans came out in 1975.
spk_0
We don't really have to get into it.
spk_0
So it wouldn't have been when Niki was 14, which was 1972.
spk_0
Again, that's just fine.
spk_0
He's selling drugs, babe.
spk_0
He's stealing.
spk_0
He's getting in fights.
spk_0
He's frying on acid.
spk_0
He's like a hover bad kid with like, he's just like the ultimate bad kid from a broken
spk_0
home.
spk_0
100%.
spk_0
But like also drawn to, but also like a freak, like drawn to the freak shit of like wearing
spk_0
nail polish and makeup, which was like, again, this is 1972 slash five.
spk_0
You know, like it's, this is very uncommon.
spk_0
Like you're going to get picked on.
spk_0
He said the black kids at school called him Alice Bowie and tried to beat him up.
spk_0
Alice Bowie is very funny, actually.
spk_0
Alice Bowie is a great name.
spk_0
So he starts hanging out with these other kids that are in a band called Cold Days.
spk_0
They start buying long, cool scarves to like get their Keith Richards on.
spk_0
They're buying women's vests.
spk_0
You know, they're super skinny so they can wear all that stuff.
spk_0
They're really into it.
spk_0
Around age 14, this is, I'm sure you'll remember this, he tries to have his mother arrested.
spk_0
Toles form sounds bad.
spk_0
Think about Nikki Six is, he's nothing if not a planner.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
This man, he's a male at the plan.
spk_0
He has been since the beginning.
spk_0
He does not want to be policed anymore by his mother.
spk_0
He does not want rules.
spk_0
So he takes a blade and cuts his arm open and then calls the police and says his mom did it.
spk_0
And they come and Nikki said, I wanted them to lock her away so I could live alone.
spk_0
But my plan backfired.
spk_0
The police said that if I as a minor living in our custody, press charges,
spk_0
they'd have to put me in a juvenile home till I was 18.
spk_0
That meant I wouldn't be able to play guitar for four years.
spk_0
And that meant that I'd never make it.
spk_0
And I was going to make it.
spk_0
There was no doubt about that.
spk_0
So I struck a plea bargain with my mother.
spk_0
I told her I wouldn't press assault charges if she'd back off, leave me alone and let me be.
spk_0
You haven't been there for me.
spk_0
I told her, so just let me go.
spk_0
And she did.
spk_0
Good for you.
spk_0
Good for you, Nikki.
spk_0
She was a dick.
spk_0
He was, he's mad.
spk_0
I'm on team Nikki here.
spk_0
I'm on team Nikki.
spk_0
I'm sure she had some terrible upbringing as well.
spk_0
You know, like this is a hurt people hurt people situation,
spk_0
but we're focusing on Nikki sex here.
spk_0
OK, I want to talk about the New York Dolls thing, but I also really want to already start to talk about how
spk_0
these guys are getting these women's clothing makeup feminine.
spk_0
And I just like, it really launched me into thinking about how almost from the beginning of
spk_0
not even just white rock and roll, all rock and roll, because it was a little richer
spk_0
to first-world eyeliner, right?
spk_0
Which is even what the dolls, like, which set off this like thing of men and rock and roll
spk_0
wearing makeup.
spk_0
It started, I want to say it's a little richer.
spk_0
Does that sound right, Timo?
spk_0
Without a doubt, because little Richard was always like, I'm the first.
spk_0
I am rock and roll.
spk_0
All of you copied me.
spk_0
Where's my award?
spk_0
It's me.
spk_0
I'm the fucking one.
spk_0
All y'all copied me.
spk_0
And he's literally correct.
spk_0
Right.
spk_0
But I was just thinking, like, how from the beginning, how interesting it is that like these
spk_0
male rockers, rock stars would incorporate these aspects of femininity to attract women,
spk_0
right?
spk_0
To put them at ease, to telegraph vulnerability.
spk_0
But also, it kind of creates the sense of like wholeness, because they have like these
spk_0
overtly masculine qualities, right?
spk_0
Rock stars, like, I mean, you think a fucking, that's like you're literally
spk_0
putting your dick on parade on the stage.
spk_0
But then also, by softening it with some feminine element, it's like a wholeness.
spk_0
I don't know, I got really in my Andrea Dworkin bag or whatever when I was thinking about
spk_0
all this.
spk_0
But also, this is, in my mind, this is a cock rock band.
spk_0
Like, this band is leading with their big fucking bass.
spk_0
100%.
spk_0
And so they're also sort of like, we're so straight and we love pussy so much in our
spk_0
cocks are so big and strong that we'll wear lipstick and eyeliner and platform shoes,
spk_0
like, same as Paul Stanley, Ace Freely, like, his tongue are big dicks.
spk_0
It's just like a posturing thing, but they really fucking loved it and they really stayed
spk_0
with it.
spk_0
They're really organized in their brands, right?
spk_0
Like they like, they're like, it was a strategy.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
It was a creative direction.
spk_0
Exactly.
spk_0
It was a creative direction.
spk_0
It was a strategy.
spk_0
It worked.
spk_0
And like, I don't know if it's, if they're trying to be like soft and friendly for women.
spk_0
Well, maybe that was a part of that, yeah.
spk_0
I think they were being subversive first and foremost.
spk_0
I think that's like, because they were, they, I mean, this is where we get into the
spk_0
New York dolls of it all, right?
spk_0
Like, 1973 is the year the first New York dolls album comes out.
spk_0
I have no understanding of how Nicki found this album.
spk_0
It didn't come up in any of, because it's not like it was popular, you know?
spk_0
It's not like it was like on the charts, on the radio in every radio store.
spk_0
But to Nicki, this was a huge band, he said, they're closed, they're attitude.
spk_0
A lot of that stuff shaped Molly crew.
spk_0
And the thing about the New York dolls, here's what he said, they were iconic, the flamboyance
spk_0
of their fuck you.
spk_0
I modeled myself after Johnny Thunders trying to split the difference between him and Mad Max.
spk_0
That's why I teased my hair out.
spk_0
I was trying to look like Johnny Thunders.
spk_0
And with the New York dolls, that dress and that makeup and those platforms, that was
spk_0
super, that was punk, right?
spk_0
That was them being punk.
spk_0
That was them trying to, to like, stir the fucking pot to upset the waters.
spk_0
Absolutely.
spk_0
When it was deranged.
spk_0
It was deranged at the time, especially.
spk_0
spk_0
So the New York dolls kind of radicalizes Nicki.
spk_0
He drops out of school.
spk_0
He leaves home.
spk_0
He's kind of homeless for a bit.
spk_0
He's like shoplifting, fecking, burrows and bickowski because he's, again, the soul of
spk_0
the poet.
spk_0
And then he finally calls his mom and he's like, listen, I just need you to give me enough
spk_0
money to go back to my grandparents.
spk_0
Like I can't be here anymore.
spk_0
I'm, you know, I'm going to go to jail.
spk_0
I'm selling drugs outside the fucking D-purple show.
spk_0
Like, I got to get out of here.
spk_0
So she's like, fine.
spk_0
How old is he right now?
spk_0
It's probably 17, I want to say.
spk_0
16, 17.
spk_0
Back to the pig farm.
spk_0
He goes, Yasi.
spk_0
Yes.
spk_0
Back to Jerome, Idaho, honey.
spk_0
And he said, all I had by way of music for the ride was an arosmith tape, a lintered
spk_0
skinner tape and a boom box.
spk_0
And listen to those cassettes over and over till I arrived in Jerome.
spk_0
I walked off the bus in six-inch platforms, a great, Tweed double-breasted suit, a
spk_0
shag haircut and fingernail polish.
spk_0
I'm sorry.
spk_0
Have you ever heard of anything fucking cooler than that image?
spk_0
A real rebel, a real freak show rebel.
spk_0
With a boom box on his shoulder.
spk_0
A real freak show.
spk_0
His grandma turned white.
spk_0
Now, what happens is NEPO alert.
spk_0
Just kidding, but kind of.
spk_0
His aunt Sharon, his mom's sister, his grandparents daughter, had married Don Zimmerman,
spk_0
the then president of Capitol Records.
spk_0
And they were visiting Jerome, Idaho.
spk_0
And so he reconnects and he's like, OK, the master plan is getting notched up, you
spk_0
guys, because turns out Uncle Don is the president of Capitol Records.
spk_0
Doesn't actually, I mean, it's funny because he does a little bit help him, but not in
spk_0
the ways that you would think.
spk_0
But he does send him all these packages of cassettes and rock magazines and like, you
spk_0
know, this is what's going on in LA, babe.
spk_0
And Nicky's like, I got a move to LA.
spk_0
So at 17 years old, this is 1975.
spk_0
He packs up.
spk_0
He fucking moves in with his aunt, Uncle, in Lachinata, shout out Lachinata, beautiful
spk_0
neighborhood in Glendale, northern Glendale.
spk_0
And he says in the dirt, it's funny, because there's like differing stories.
spk_0
The dirt is obviously like where they're being kind of like, the dirt was, I don't want
spk_0
to say what's like early 2000s when I was running 2002 or something.
spk_0
So they're like still a little fresh of like, you know, fuck you or rock stars.
spk_0
And then when Nicky writes his like more reflective middle aged memoirs, it's a little softer.
spk_0
So like in the dirt, he's like, I got kicked out for being a punk.
spk_0
But then in his other book, he's like, actually don took me under his wing musically.
spk_0
He helped me get a job at music plus records in Glendale, which is where he learned about
spk_0
Devo, the Ramones, real kind of punk.
spk_0
Cause like we'll talk about New York dolls being punk spiritually and aesthetically.
spk_0
But like the music of the New York dolls besides being extremely terribly recorded and
spk_0
slightly poorly played is not punk music really, you know.
spk_0
And there's their music doesn't sound like anything like it.
spk_0
Who Molly Cruz?
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Interesting.
spk_0
I'm going to poke a hole in that when we get into the first album because I have some thoughts.
spk_0
I feel yeah.
spk_0
So they also have a little said name little Ricky and you know, Nicky's out here, just smoking
spk_0
pot and being a terrible influence.
spk_0
And they're like, you know what?
spk_0
It would be so great if you didn't live here anymore.
spk_0
And so Don co-signs a little apartment for him.
spk_0
And he moves out.
spk_0
He loses his job at the record store because he is in fact stealing from the register.
spk_0
Gets a new job at a carpet cleaning place, which he also loses because he's doing some insane
spk_0
grifting where he keeps telling people that he knows how to get cat and dog pee stains
spk_0
out of the carpet with this very special treatment that's going to cost an extra whatever
spk_0
money.
spk_0
But then he just brings like a fake like vinegar or something and takes their money and
spk_0
ends up getting fight.
spk_0
He's, this is a business man.
spk_0
I want to pay in a quick picture of what's happening just like across the two 10 freeway
spk_0
from Locking out at this time.
spk_0
There's a little band called Van Halen who are becoming very popular in Pasadena.
spk_0
They were recording with Gene Simmons.
spk_0
I think this is an important thing to point out because Van Halen is in many ways also
spk_0
the blueprint of what goes on to happen with sunset strip glam rock metal, right?
spk_0
You know, like they're very much pioneers.
spk_0
What year are we right now, Yossi in your picture?
spk_0
Or 76 probably.
spk_0
So like Van Halen is like a real local band, right?
spk_0
Van Halen is like killing it in the like backyard parties like Gzzarries,
spk_0
which was like a alternative to the whiskey and rocksy.
spk_0
Like they're, they're the hot local band of Los Angeles.
spk_0
And they're about to probably get signed to their major label, whatever.
spk_0
But this is, he starts to catch wind of Van Halen through like friends of friends or whatever.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
Now it's 1977.
spk_0
It's time for Mick Mars to enter the picture for the first time.
spk_0
Nikki's working at a liquor store and he is there in his own words,
spk_0
strung out on speed and alcohol.
spk_0
And one night a rocker with black hair walks in.
spk_0
He said he looked like a creepy version of Johnny Thunder.
spk_0
So I asked if he played music.
spk_0
He nodded that he did.
spk_0
And Nikki was like, okay, well, what are you into?
spk_0
And Mick said the Paul Butterfield Blues band and Jeff Beck.
spk_0
And Nikki was like, and he was like, well, I'm into the dolls, erosmith, MC5,
spk_0
Nugent, kiss.
spk_0
And Mick looked at him contemptuously according to Nikki and said, Oh, I'm into real players.
spk_0
And then one version of this story, Nicky was like, well,
spk_0
fuck off, dick and kicked him out of the liquor store.
spk_0
But the other version of the story Mick was like, listen,
spk_0
if you ever want to hear a real guitar player,
spk_0
babe, come on down to the stone pony,
spk_0
my band spiders and cowboys is playing.
spk_0
Mick Mars, one of the most interesting people I've.
spk_0
And Nikki apparently did go.
spk_0
He went down.
spk_0
He was underage and he said it changed me profoundly because Mick did a guitar solo
spk_0
using the mic stand as a slide.
spk_0
And he was like blown away.
spk_0
Then they don't talk for a while.
spk_0
That's just like they have this faithful interaction.
spk_0
All right.
spk_0
Nikki's like, it's time for me to fucking, it's time for world domination.
spk_0
So he starts auditioning for band third listed in the recycler.
spk_0
You guys anyone who's listening to this,
spk_0
who was like, I guess a little bit below the age of what 35 probably does not remember the recycler.
spk_0
So it was a local rag free paper.
spk_0
You got around town.
spk_0
You want to buy a used car?
spk_0
It's in the recycler.
spk_0
You want to join a band?
spk_0
It's in the recycler.
spk_0
We didn't have Craigslist.
spk_0
He said he auditioned for a band called quote garden or soul garden or hanging garden or hanging
spk_0
soul.
spk_0
And he said they look like him, but they played terrible doors like psych jam rock.
spk_0
But he kept running into the band's guitar player, Lizzie Gray at the star wood.
spk_0
Very cool iconic club venue.
spk_0
And they connected over loving cheap trick and slayed and the dolls.
spk_0
And Lizzie had been asked by a guy called Blackie Lawless,
spk_0
which I could actually do a separate like three hours on Blackie Lawless because
spk_0
don't even get me one of the most interesting musical figures alive with later go on to be the lead singer of wasp.
spk_0
But Blackie Lawless at this time has a band called sister.
spk_0
Nicky was like, Blackie was an amazing songwriter.
spk_0
And despite the fact that he was cold and shut down,
spk_0
he was inspirational to talk to because he was making an impression not just with music,
spk_0
but with his parents.
spk_0
He was into eating worms and drawing penicrams on stage,
spk_0
anything to get a reaction from the audience.
spk_0
Also, no big deal.
spk_0
He had literally been in the New York dolls.
spk_0
Blackie Lawless joined the New York dolls after Johnny Thunder's left and went on one tour with them in 1975.
spk_0
And then he was in Killer Kane, which is Arthur Kane's band, which by the way, Killer Kane,
spk_0
I don't know if you guys have ever listened to really fucking good.
spk_0
Have you listened to Killer Kane?
spk_0
I have not.
spk_0
Surprisingly really good.
spk_0
This song, Mr. Cool goes really hard.
spk_0
My name is Cool.
spk_0
Anyways, he joins the band.
spk_0
Everything's going great.
spk_0
But then they butt heads and Blackie's like, you gotta go.
spk_0
I'm the boss of this band, not you.
spk_0
But Blackie was an enduring influence on Nicky because the penicrams, the shock value,
spk_0
even Nicky said, he was like, later on when I did shout out the devil, I think he got pissed.
spk_0
How could he not have been?
spk_0
I had taken stuff from him.
spk_0
I had taken Motley Cruz penicram from Blackie.
spk_0
He wasn't using it anymore.
spk_0
And I had asked his permission, but I did take it.
spk_0
Lighting myself on fire was a Blackie move too.
spk_0
I'd never seen him do it, but he'd talk about throwing worms into the audience.
spk_0
He'd talk about pouring lighter fluid all of himself.
spk_0
Blackie was always trying to come up with a new way to shock.
spk_0
So that's the penicram back story.
spk_0
Nicky is, he's a, he's a spun.
spk_0
She's absorbing and putting it all into his master plan.
spk_0
Now he's, he's banless.
spk_0
He's broke.
spk_0
He's lonely.
spk_0
He's still going by Frank Farron and Jr.
spk_0
By the way, at this time, this is still Frank hours.
spk_0
He had a girlfriend named Angie at the time and he said, I remember she was always talking
spk_0
about her old boyfriend from Indiana, a guy named Nikki six, S Y X X, who used to play
spk_0
in a top 40 cover band.
spk_0
By the way, the guy that was first called Nikki six had actually gotten it off of a license
spk_0
plan on a car that he saw in Newport Beach that said Nikki six N I K I the number six.
spk_0
It's the etymology of Nikki six.
spk_0
But anyways, Nicky was like, well, I loved his name, but I couldn't just steal it.
spk_0
So I decided to call myself Nikki nine.
spk_0
But everyone said that was two punk rock and punk was now two mainstream.
spk_0
Not very interesting because once again, we're only in 1977 punk happened in 76.
spk_0
But with the idea it's over.
spk_0
Yeah, they were like, it's, it's two, it's too lame.
spk_0
So he was just like, well, I decided anyone who thinks sir because he the guy was in a
spk_0
surf punk outfit or surf punk band.
spk_0
He was like, so I decided that anyone who thinks surfing has any to do with punk rock
spk_0
doesn't deserve such a cool name.
spk_0
So he went ahead and took the name Nikki six.
spk_0
Thank God for that car that had the Nikki six license plan.
spk_0
God.
spk_0
So Nikki starts his own band, 1978.
spk_0
He puts Lizzie Gray in it.
spk_0
They put an ad out.
spk_0
The ad says band looking for a bass player must have chops equipment and into
spk_0
Aero Smith.
spk_0
The band is called London.
spk_0
We decided to call ourselves London because London was where all the best bands were
spk_0
from terrible name guys.
spk_0
Really?
spk_0
Who answers the ad, Yossi?
spk_0
So glad you asked a guy named Dane Rage who was like actually really gorgeous.
spk_0
Like total like 80s, punk, like Chad Jolline guy, a keyboard player named John St.
spk_0
John and they had a singer named Michael White.
spk_0
So they started playing then it's 19, you know, they're getting some following.
spk_0
Nikki said it's 1979 as far as we're concerned, rock and roll is dead.
spk_0
We were not the hoople.
spk_0
The New York Dolls, the sex pistols.
spk_0
We are everything that no one else was into.
spk_0
Also, fun fact about London.
spk_0
This band goes on for a long time and slash and Izzy Stradlin were at some point in this band
spk_0
later.
spk_0
Okay, they fire Michael White.
spk_0
They hire a guy named Nigel Benjamin.
spk_0
Nigel Benjamin had literally been in Motte the Hoople.
spk_0
He was in Hunter the Singers replacement.
spk_0
They are managed by a guy named David Forrest who ran the Starwood.
spk_0
He gives Nikki a job at the Starwood cleaning up after this is so wild.
spk_0
I just want to read this quote because imagine Mal being around this time.
spk_0
Nikki said booking at the Starwood was tolise gets a frenet.
spk_0
You'd have fear playing one night followed by the plim souls, followed by the germs,
spk_0
followed by gang of four, followed by black flag, followed by the gogos.
spk_0
Insane.
spk_0
Bucking insane.
spk_0
Are we were we born to lay or are we right on time?
spk_0
No, I think I was born to lay.
spk_0
I don't know about you.
spk_0
You were born kind of in a good sweet spot, but like me for sure, I needed to be born
spk_0
10 year exactly 10 years earlier.
spk_0
Or maybe 20 if I wanted to be around here.
spk_0
I should have been I should have been like 20 years old in the 90s.
spk_0
What can you do?
spk_0
So he's cleaning up after fucking fear shows at the Starwood slash and Stephen Adler,
spk_0
our guys babe.
spk_0
Their local teens, they're writing their skateboards past the Starwood and they
spk_0
would sneak in the back door to hear London play.
spk_0
They were like big London fans.
spk_0
The slash said my first memory of Nikki was seeing him playing with his band
spk_0
London at the Starwood.
spk_0
I was about 14 at the time.
spk_0
And he was just this charismatic glam punk bass player who made a real big impression
spk_0
on me.
spk_0
Then I remember him coming to my high school and giving out flyers to a Motley
spk_0
crew show at the whiskey go go to all the hot chicks.
spk_0
Motley crew was America's sex pistols.
spk_0
Wow.
spk_0
It's a bold statement.
spk_0
Tommy Lee was also a teenager who had a big London obsession and had a big
spk_0
poster of London in his bedroom.
spk_0
Beautiful.
spk_0
Beautiful.
spk_0
So Van Halen at this time is 1979.
spk_0
They are now the biggest band in LA basically.
spk_0
Alongside another band called choir, right?
spk_0
Randy Rhodes is banned.
spk_0
You know, Rhodes famously one of the like the greatest after Eddie Van Halen,
spk_0
probably the great one of the greatest guitar players from this scene of all time.
spk_0
And Nikki was like, oh, we were watching quiet right?
spk_0
Quiet right.
spk_0
It was very early, right?
spk_0
They had already made two albums.
spk_0
They had only come out in Japan.
spk_0
Van Halen kind of made it like eaked in the door, but no one is signing rock
spk_0
and he straight up rock anymore because new wave has happened.
spk_0
And I think this is kind of what Nikki meant by punk sold out.
spk_0
What he meant was new wave because what happened is punk gave way to more radio
spk_0
friendly adult friendly record label friendly like Elvis Costello, the go goes.
spk_0
And that is what's fucking happening.
spk_0
And they're not interested in signing anything that's like a real guitar rock heavy band anymore.
spk_0
Lizzie Gray from London to the Van Halen would actually come check out London shows
spk_0
because they were dressed like the New York dolls and people were talking about them.
spk_0
I cannot verify this.
spk_0
But according to Lizzie Gray, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards also came to the Starwood to see London.
spk_0
Great.
spk_0
Great.
spk_0
So Nikki tries to get capital records to sign the band.
spk_0
He's like, let's go.
spk_0
Let's go.
spk_0
And you know what?
spk_0
Unk says no.
spk_0
He says no heart.
spk_0
I can't sell this.
spk_0
And when Nikki comes back and he's like, okay, guys, sorry, we're not getting signed,
spk_0
but we're going to go hard.
spk_0
Nigel is like, I'm out, bitch.
spk_0
No, no deal.
spk_0
I'm out.
spk_0
Fuck you.
spk_0
So Nikki's like, well, I'm not giving up.
spk_0
I'm going to try to get the guy from sweet to like, you know, help us do something
spk_0
Brian Connelly.
spk_0
So his uncle puts him in touch.
spk_0
He sends Brian Connelly from sweet photos of London, a tape.
spk_0
He gets on the phone with him.
spk_0
And this is what Brian Connelly says.
spk_0
I got your photos in music and I see what you're trying to do.
spk_0
But I can't help you.
spk_0
My advice would be to keep your day job.
spk_0
This kind of music is never going to make it.
spk_0
I'm sure you're a very nice kid, but rock and roll is over.
spk_0
It's dead and gone now.
spk_0
It's not coming back.
spk_0
I'm making my country album.
spk_0
Wait, hold on.
spk_0
Is this like Eagles?
spk_0
What's what's peak?
spk_0
I got it.
spk_0
I get it that it's like whip it and whatever like blondie, whatever new wave.
spk_0
But what else?
spk_0
What's rock?
spk_0
What is rock right now?
spk_0
Bee Gees babe, Michael Jackson, super tramp.
spk_0
Yes, Eagles the long run, dire straight famous haters of Molly crew.
spk_0
Christopher Cross.
spk_0
Got it.
spk_0
Got it.
spk_0
Got it.
spk_0
Warner, the NAC back to new wave, ELO, the cars.
spk_0
Tusk is 1979.
spk_0
Fleetwood Mac, the heartbreakers.
spk_0
Listen, I don't know what was going on behind closed doors.
spk_0
I mean, those are kind of legacy bands, right?
spk_0
At that point, like Pink Floyd has like, has made their mark.
spk_0
But it's more like harder rock that they were like, we're not doing that.
spk_0
Yeah, this is corny.
spk_0
No one wants this.
spk_0
No one's gonna buy this.
spk_0
It's not saying.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
So Nikki's just gets more determined.
spk_0
He's like, fuck you, Brian Connolly.
spk_0
I mean, he didn't actually say that I'm paraphrasing.
spk_0
They get another singer.
spk_0
It doesn't last long.
spk_0
Nikki's like, this is, fuck, it's not working.
spk_0
The shady managers and the starwood are keeping all their money.
spk_0
The new singer is like, I need to get paid bitch.
spk_0
Nikki's at rock bots for his first rock bots.
spk_0
And he's like, I'm going to call my dad.
spk_0
There's two versions of this story.
spk_0
One is that he finds his father's number through information and calls him up.
spk_0
And he says he picked up on the first ring.
spk_0
And when I told him it was me, his voice turned gruff.
spk_0
I don't have a son.
spk_0
He told me I do not have a son.
spk_0
I don't know who you are.
spk_0
Go fuck yourself.
spk_0
I yelled into the receiver.
spk_0
Don't ever call here again.
spk_0
I cried for hours.
spk_0
Alternatively, in another book, he says that when he called a woman answered and told him
spk_0
Frank Frano was dead as of two years ago.
spk_0
And then Nikki said, well, I'm Frankie Frank son.
spk_0
And the woman also said, don't call here again.
spk_0
I don't know which one happened.
spk_0
Either way, the outcome was bad and painful.
spk_0
This is 1980.
spk_0
Nikki's like, I'm done with this fucking name.
spk_0
I'm not having this man's name anymore.
spk_0
He doesn't want me.
spk_0
He doesn't want to know me.
spk_0
I don't want to know him.
spk_0
And that's the day.
spk_0
December 9th, 1980, he legally changes name to Nikki six.
spk_0
I want to point out he's only 21 years old.
spk_0
He's about to turn 22.
spk_0
Nikki six is born.
spk_0
All right.
spk_0
So he's on his way to the top, but he doesn't know it yet.
spk_0
I think spiritually babe.
spk_0
I mean, you know, I'm a bit of a fucking woo-woo bitch.
spk_0
The energy that was moved the day that Nikki six unsaddled himself of his like
spk_0
Frank Farona name of this baggage and like really was reborn like a phoenix from
spk_0
the ashes into his real true form of Nikki six got the ball really rolling down the
spk_0
hill.
spk_0
Do you know from all of your research, how big Nikki six is caucus?
spk_0
You know what?
spk_0
That's such a great question.
spk_0
I wonder if it was ever documented.
spk_0
And then remember there was that website where people would contribute their
spk_0
information about the size of rock star penises.
spk_0
Guys, I'm not saying this because I'm like, oh, Cox or everything, but this is a
spk_0
cock fucking band and this man leads with his dick as he tells us on every single
spk_0
page of the dirt of both.
spk_0
I highly recommend.
spk_0
Here we go.
spk_0
The metal sludge dot TV.
spk_0
I remember that if you guys want to find it metal sludge dot TV, it says
spk_0
Nikki six, the leader of Molly.
spk_0
Who is about six inches in length gives great oral sex and is a great French
spk_0
Guesser.
spk_0
Anyway, these guys lead with her Cox and their pool.
spk_0
Frank is dead.
spk_0
Yes, Nikki sex, regardless, he has the energy of 15 inch.
spk_0
I mean, I'm just saying not long after he changes his name, guess who comes back into
spk_0
the picture?
spk_0
Mick Mars.
spk_0
Oh, yeah, we're they met up by chance again.
spk_0
No, Nikki puts an ad in the recycler before I mentioned the ad and just going to do a
spk_0
little back tiny bit because you just did point out I'm highly favoring Nikki, but
spk_0
it's only because Nikki is the start of the story.
spk_0
We're going to get into all of them.
spk_0
Mick Mars was born Robert Allen deal on May 4th, 1951.
spk_0
So just I need it to be very clear to you guys.
spk_0
Mick Mars is seven years older than Nikki and about 10 years older than Tommy
spk_0
and Vince.
spk_0
So he is a borderline of different generation.
spk_0
He's the greatest generation.
spk_0
He was born in Indiana.
spk_0
He had scarlet fever when he was three years old.
spk_0
That's how old this man is.
spk_0
Do you remember scarlet fever?
spk_0
No, you don't because it's a fucking horse and carodias disease.
spk_0
We don't have that anymore.
spk_0
Okay, RFK, junior.
spk_0
That's why we need vaccines.
spk_0
Anyways, he grew up in Garden Grove, California.
spk_0
We took this trip to Garden Grove, smelled like Luda, inside the van, you know, that place.
spk_0
And he starts playing guitar at 12 and 14.
spk_0
He's already performing in a Beatles cover band because this is 1965.
spk_0
Where in the Beatles are still active.
spk_0
He drops out of high school and starts playing guitar in a bunch of like
spk_0
blues, bass, rock bands throughout the 70s.
spk_0
He's in a band called White Horse.
spk_0
People start to know him as like a really accomplished guitar player.
spk_0
He leaves White Horse because the band's like, oh, actually, we're going to do disco music now.
spk_0
And he was like, absolutely not.
spk_0
It's worth mentioning here, although it doesn't come out publicly and so much later that
spk_0
in his 20s, he's diagnosed with a disease that I'm going to absolutely butcher the pronunciation of
spk_0
Anki losing spawn delitis.
spk_0
It's a degenerative bone disease that is meant to stop in people's mid 30s.
spk_0
But for him, it never did.
spk_0
And actually over time, it made him shorter, which he was already kind of short to begin with.
spk_0
So in 1980, April, now we're back.
spk_0
He places, he places the ad in the recycler to form his own new original band after his other band goes disco.
spk_0
He also, according to his chapters in the dirt, already had the name Molly crew.
spk_0
This is what the ad said, extra terrestrial guitarist available for any other aliens that want to come conquer the earth.
spk_0
He was going by the name Zorky Charlemagne at the time.
spk_0
This ad got him too many weird messages.
spk_0
So he went ahead and changed it to loud, rude and aggressive guitarist available.
spk_0
He said, the guy with the Hitler mustache from Sparks responded, but I told him that I didn't like his music
spk_0
and I'd be wasting his time and mind if I tried out for him.
spk_0
And I think he respected me for that.
spk_0
Incredible.
spk_0
I love the sparks.
spk_0
I know some cheesy band in Redondo Beach that went on to become poison or warrant or some other name that
spk_0
wrecked the 80s called because they'd seen me play a Pier 52.
spk_0
I didn't call them back to cool Andy Warhol.
spk_0
Everyone has their 15 minutes of fame to quote myself.
spk_0
I wish they didn't.
spk_0
I think that this band, if it was either of them, it was probably warrant because poison's from Pennsylvania.
spk_0
So that's Mick Mars coming back in the in the picture.
spk_0
Now we're going to talk about Tommy Lee, born Thomas Lee bass October 3rd, 1962.
spk_0
He's a Libra, of course, yes, because he's a fucking hopeless romantic.
spk_0
He was born in Athens, Greece, Tommy Lee's mother, Vasiliki, Papa Demetru.
spk_0
It was a Greek beauty queen.
spk_0
She was Miss Greece in the 50s and she met his father, David Lee Thomas, who was in the army and met her,
spk_0
fell in love with her and proposed on the spot, even though she did not speak one word of English and he spoke no Greek.
spk_0
So he gets that streak of beautiful, deep romanticism from his father clearly.
spk_0
They moved to Covina right after Tommy's born Covina is sort of east of LA.
spk_0
And Tommy just gets right into drums.
spk_0
He starts playing pots and pans as a little kid.
spk_0
His parents get him a little kitty drum set, which then he abandoned to do accordion lessons.
spk_0
After he saw the milkman playing in accordion, born for music, foreign for music.
spk_0
There's a very funny quote from Molly Cruz, former management that was like,
spk_0
Tommy Lee would have drank the cool aid given by what's the cult leader?
spk_0
Yeah, like, and it kind of like it sounded kind of mean, but then you're like,
spk_0
he started playing accordion because he saw the milkman do it and then you're like,
spk_0
Oh, actually, that probably is like one of the tenants of his personality.
spk_0
Like he's kind of just like, Oh, okay.
spk_0
He also took tap and ballet lessons with his sister because he just wanted to be around girls.
spk_0
And he took piano and then guitar.
spk_0
He said, my accordion was an electric divincy and I turn it up until the distortion was nasty
spk_0
and placed smoke on the water until my mother cracked and bought me a pawn shop guitar.
spk_0
Playing accordion till the distortion was nasty.
spk_0
I take it out to the yard and rock out so everyone could see me.
spk_0
I don't know why I always wanted people to notice.
spk_0
I'm still that way.
spk_0
I do things because I love them, but I also want the recognition.
spk_0
It's brought me a lot of happiness and gotten me into a lot of trouble.
spk_0
Fortunately, no Jehovah's Witnesses stopped by the house when I was a kid
spk_0
because I probably would be selling Bibles today.
spk_0
He joins the high school marching band instead because he sees these dudes and he thinks they look cool.
spk_0
It's very different than Nikki, right?
spk_0
Tommy's parents are really supportive.
spk_0
Like he wants to play drums.
spk_0
Like his dad gets some professional snare, but also it was like a good dad where like
spk_0
makes sure that he pays him back, makes him get a job.
spk_0
It's like he has a lot of structure.
spk_0
He's playing in the fucking South Hills high drum core marching band.
spk_0
He's learning tricks twirling all this shit that he ends up obviously doing a Molly crew.
spk_0
And then he moves high schools to go to Royal Oak High in Covena.
spk_0
I think maybe San D Miss area, Bill and Ted.
spk_0
He forms his first band, US 101 with a surfer called Tom who was obsessed with the Beach Boys.
spk_0
Two of the guys in the US 101 went on to form the band autograph, sort of a forgettable 80s band.
spk_0
They're playing school dances and backyard shows.
spk_0
This is only important because this is where Tommy Lee first sees in his words the coolest fucking kid in the world.
spk_0
He was a surfer dude with long blonde hair fluffed up high on his head just like David Lee Roth.
spk_0
He dressed in sharp all white clothes and he was in a band, a much better band than mine.
spk_0
But he was kicked out during sophomore year and started coming to my high school.
spk_0
As soon as he walked through the double doors wearing bad ass low hip hugging bell bottoms and a white muscle t-shirt,
spk_0
you would have thought the rapture had occurred.
spk_0
All the girls were speechless and puppy love with this long hair surfing rocker.
spk_0
His name was Vince Wharton.
spk_0
That is Vince Neil.
spk_0
I know.
spk_0
Can you just really picture it just like his hair flowing in the breeze.
spk_0
Those white bell bottoms and the white muscle see and all the grand.
spk_0
I can see all the girls.
spk_0
I can see that visual is clear and the energy.
spk_0
The energy totally.
spk_0
Tommy of course because he's Tommy's like a golden retriever puppy dog.
spk_0
Just walks right up to him and he's like, Hey man, what's up?
spk_0
My name's Tommy and I play drums.
spk_0
I hear you're in a band.
spk_0
Vince's band was called rock candy.
spk_0
It was spelled really stupid.
spk_0
Tommy said Vince had an amazing voice just a quick did Vince have an amazing.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
I have.
spk_0
Should we talk about this now?
spk_0
Now I sort of think he did have an amazing voice actually.
spk_0
I've a person like myself who is on Instagram all the time and also loves metal.
spk_0
Definitely gets a lot of let's make fun of Axel and Vince Neil videos of them on their current tours.
spk_0
And how they can't sing anymore.
spk_0
And you see Vince Neil videos that are not very flattering and you can't understand any of the words to shout out the devil and all the stuff.
spk_0
But then I've been listening to all these albums.
spk_0
And I'm like, Vince Neil does have an amazing voice.
spk_0
That video that you just sent me earlier today have taken me to the top.
spk_0
1981.
spk_0
That's 1981 and we're about to get there.
spk_0
That's not auto tuned.
spk_0
It's fucking awesome.
spk_0
And he lost it through drugs and alcohol.
spk_0
I guess it may be smoking, but I do think that he did have an amazing voice.
spk_0
I'm not a great lover of Vince Neil, but I believe this visual of him being the hottest guy in the rapture.
spk_0
And I do think that Vince Neil had a good voice in the early 80s.
spk_0
I really do.
spk_0
OK, I'm here to listen to your take.
spk_0
I have spent a lot of time with the first album because that's my favorite.
spk_0
And I will say I think he had the perfect voice for what they were doing.
spk_0
OK, right.
spk_0
Maybe I just wish that I could do that.
spk_0
Take it to the town.
spk_0
spk_0
I mean, it's incredible.
spk_0
He has this like almost like girlish childlike quality to his voice,
spk_0
especially in that early sort of it is a little punk in a cool way.
spk_0
Like, actually, I think ostensibly had a really good singing voice.
spk_0
I don't know if it's impossible to maintain because it's probably the range of it.
spk_0
I don't know much about the science of singing voices, but like Vince Neil just had something special.
spk_0
Exactly.
spk_0
Tommy thinks he's the coolest guy alive.
spk_0
He's like, he was the girls fainted with lust when he walked by.
spk_0
There was a rumor going around that he fathered a boy before he was even in high school.
spk_0
I love that.
spk_0
That made him cool that he had like a teen pregnancy.
spk_0
OK, here's now we're going to get into the Vince Neil of it all.
spk_0
Vince Neil Wharton born February 8th, 1961, an Aquarius in Hollywood.
spk_0
His family moved around Southern California.
spk_0
So Inglewood, Watts, and then finally settled down in Glendora, which is near Covina.
spk_0
I don't have this toy right, but he is like a quarter Mexican, I believe.
spk_0
I believe that's right.
spk_0
The mom is half Mexican.
spk_0
Yes, exactly.
spk_0
He leaves home in high school, it gets kicked out on the wheelchair after he met Tommy.
spk_0
And Tommy lets him sleep in his van in his parents driveway.
spk_0
And then his parents find out and they're like, you bring the poor boy inside.
spk_0
Because Tommy's parents are nice and cool.
spk_0
And so Vince sleeps on Tommy's bedroom floor till he finds a place to live.
spk_0
We're going to get back to Vince in a second, but Tommy's in a band now called sweet 19
spk_0
with this guy named Greg.
spk_0
I think it's Leon, Greg Leon, and another high school dropout.
spk_0
Tommy is about 17.
spk_0
So this is like 1979.
spk_0
They play their first star would show.
spk_0
And that's where Tommy gets into the London of it all.
spk_0
He sees them play with Greg and Greg was like, we went to the star would one time to see London.
spk_0
And Tommy just fell in love with them.
spk_0
He goes, man, there's something about that guy talking about Nikki.
spk_0
Now sweet 19 falls apart.
spk_0
Greg starts jamming with Nikki, who was trying to put his new band together.
spk_0
After he leaves London and Nikki was like, I like Tommy's drumming style.
spk_0
Can you put us in touch?
spk_0
So Greg puts them in touch in the dirt.
spk_0
It's a totally different scene that I think was falsified about him coming up to him with the
spk_0
diner or whatever.
spk_0
Tommy is hired by Nikki throws Greg out because he was too normal.
spk_0
Tommy said he didn't have the edge that the near adults had.
spk_0
He wanted everyone to look and think exactly as he did.
spk_0
Nikki's ex-man, he had a man with a plan.
spk_0
They find another guitar player.
spk_0
His name is Robin, but quote, he was a pansy and everyone.
spk_0
This is the guy that they make make Mars kick out.
spk_0
So Mick, neither Nicky or Tommy had called about Mick's root aggressive guitar player ad.
spk_0
Tommy said we open the door and there was this little troll standing outside with black hair
spk_0
down to his ass and high stacked platforms, practically a whole roll of duct tape around them to hold them together.
spk_0
He looked like a flat broke, painfully shy, freaky looking relative of cousin it.
spk_0
I was laughing so hard.
spk_0
I called to Nikki.
spk_0
Come here.
spk_0
You gotta check this dude out.
spk_0
When Nikki and him were staying their face to face, it was like the Adam's family meets Scooby-Doo.
spk_0
Nikki said that he didn't remember or they didn't remember each other from the liquor store.
spk_0
And Mick was like, yeah, he had changed his name and his hair was all blown out,
spk_0
jet black and hanging over his face.
spk_0
I wouldn't have been able to recognize him if he was my own father.
spk_0
So Tommy said after Robin took his shit home,
spk_0
Nikki died my hair black so that it would match his and Mick's and they encouraged me to get my first tattoo.
spk_0
Mighty Mouse, my all time favorite cartoon hero.
spk_0
He reminded me of myself.
spk_0
He's little and I'm skinny and we're both always trying to save the day and we both always get the girl in the end.
spk_0
I had the artist design the tattoo of Mighty Mouse crashing through a bass drum with his sticks in his hands.
spk_0
Wow, it's so cute.
spk_0
Okay, so they get another singer in the beginning before Vince Neal.
spk_0
His name is Odin and he always wore white gloves.
spk_0
They go to the studio.
spk_0
They saw him scamming to the studio to record some of Nikki's songs.
spk_0
He already had stick to your guns, toast to the town and they did this raspberry's cover tonight.
spk_0
Tommy said they only gave us two hours.
spk_0
So when we ran out of time, Nikki made me go fuck the engineer.
spk_0
Her teeth stuck out of the side of her head like the airspout on a beach ball,
spk_0
but she was nice and I had a decent body.
spk_0
Wow.
spk_0
Apparently, during this recording, Odin would not remove his gloves to do the clapping part on toast to the town
spk_0
because Nikki wanted it to be like sweet ballroom blitz.
spk_0
And so now Nikki's pissed.
spk_0
He's like, no, you've got a clap. Take your fucking gloves off.
spk_0
And Tommy said, Mick hated him anyway because he thought he was a fat fuck, a shitty singer and a closet spiritualist.
spk_0
I don't like that guy. He's a hippie and I hate hippies.
spk_0
I want that skinny blonde fucker.
spk_0
I saw it star with the other night in that band rock candy.
spk_0
And Tommy was like, oh, I know him.
spk_0
And then he starts to set on the quest to get Vince to join their band.
spk_0
Yeah, there's three guys now with this lead singer with white gloves that they don't
spk_0
like. Exactly.
spk_0
Tommy, Mick and Nikki and then this Odin.
spk_0
So Vince said I was singing with rock candy at the Starwood and life didn't get any better than that.
spk_0
Then Tommy showed up at one of our shows and tried to fuck everything up.
spk_0
I hadn't seen him in a year since I'd left continuation school.
spk_0
And he was sporting bright leather pants,
spk_0
stiletto heels, dyed black hair and a ribbon around his neck.
spk_0
He was actually starting to look cool.
spk_0
I love it. I love it so much.
spk_0
I really love it.
spk_0
So Tommy brings Nikki and Mick to Rock Candy show.
spk_0
And Vince is like, I recognize one of them as the drug-addled loser basis in London.
spk_0
That would be Nikki.
spk_0
Tommy asked me an audition with his band.
spk_0
I was happy in rock candy, but I agreed anyway, so I wouldn't hurt his feelings.
spk_0
I guess he was going to keep blowing them off because you really didn't want to join,
spk_0
but then rock candy also was like we're going to become a new wave band.
spk_0
So we can like make it and he was like, I want to be in a fucking new way.
spk_0
So that's it.
spk_0
January 17, 1981 is the official day that Molly Crew forms because Vince finally comes to a rehearsal.
spk_0
Start singing.
spk_0
Happy, happy Molly Crew Day.
spk_0
Wow. And then what day does their first album come out?
spk_0
It's that May.
spk_0
Wow.
spk_0
Within five minutes.
spk_0
Yeah. So it's on me.
spk_0
It just like it went off.
spk_0
Like Nikki gave Vince lyrics.
spk_0
It was like we could tell that it was just like perfect.
spk_0
Nikki had to rewrite some of the songs for Vince's voice because he didn't have quite the range that, you know, were whatever.
spk_0
And the first result was live wire.
spk_0
The first fucking day, which I've got to say, it's a fucking banger all time.
spk_0
It is my favorite song.
spk_0
It's my favorite Molly Crew song.
spk_0
Me too.
spk_0
I think it's also, you know what?
spk_0
I'm going to say it.
spk_0
It's my favorite Molly Crew song too.
spk_0
It's just really interesting because we talk about this whole thing.
spk_0
None of it's in the fashion.
spk_0
They find each other and then five months later, they make this fucking album.
spk_0
Isn't it wild?
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
So they play their first ever show April 24th at the Starwood.
spk_0
Nikki gets them this gig through his day job of cleaning the floors at the Starwood.
spk_0
They open for this band called Y&T.
spk_0
David Lee Roth becomes one of their early fans.
spk_0
Now they are insane.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
Vince says immediately they're insane.
spk_0
Vince is like when Molly Crew came on the scene, it was less as a band and more as a gang.
spk_0
We get drunk, do crazy amounts of cocaine and then walk the circuit and stiletto heels stumbling all over the place.
spk_0
The sunset strip was a cesspool of depravity.
spk_0
Prostitutes and spandex and Needleton heels walked up and down the streets,
spk_0
punk satin clusters all over the sidewalk and huge lines of new waivers wearing black red and white stood in the block long lines outside of each club.
spk_0
Kim Fowley walked up and down sunset, grabbing girls and throwing them in bands while Ronnie Binghamheimer
spk_0
shredded into clubs able to make or break bands the single spin on his radio show.
spk_0
Every weekend, huge gangs of kids from North Hollywood, Sherman Oaks and Sun Valley,
spk_0
where I was originally born and lived flooded onto the scene living a thick cloud of aquanet hairspray hanging over the strip.
spk_0
Fucking injected into Mayvans.
spk_0
I love it so much.
spk_0
You want to drive down the sunset strip now, babe?
spk_0
It's a mall.
spk_0
It is a high class mall full of terrible boutiques and bad restaurants.
spk_0
And billboards for Netflix television programs.
spk_0
Yes.
spk_0
And the thing that's crazy about the strip is I'd say 12 years ago, it looked like 1981 ish.
spk_0
You know what I'm saying?
spk_0
All this at all happens since like, okay, maybe the last 15 years.
spk_0
No less than 15 years.
spk_0
Can I say why?
spk_0
Can I say why?
spk_0
What happened 15 years ago?
spk_0
Instagram.
spk_0
I really, I really would pin it on Instagram because Instagram created influencer culture and influencer culture descended like locusts.
spk_0
And it changed everything.
spk_0
Moment of silence for the sunset strip.
spk_0
No, but even when I was growing up, dude, you'd be so cool.
spk_0
Are you still going to shows there?
spk_0
It was sketchy.
spk_0
It was fun.
spk_0
You would see fucking Rodney.
spk_0
You would see these crazy figures like it was cool.
spk_0
You would see old like leftover glam rockers.
spk_0
Sorry, 15 years ago, it was not cool.
spk_0
It just looked like it.
spk_0
Because they had, it hadn't, sorry, what I mean is like it hadn't gotten built up to what it was.
spk_0
Right.
spk_0
It hadn't gotten all super fast.
spk_0
Still really quiet and sort of seedy.
spk_0
And there were some nice hotels.
spk_0
And then there was a lot of like empty empty lots.
spk_0
Now it's exactly the way I'll see you describe.
spk_0
Just I'm upset about it.
spk_0
I don't feel good about it myself personally, which is why L.A.
spk_0
is over.
spk_0
All right.
spk_0
This band would not have it without Nikki.
spk_0
I need to reiterate this a thousand times.
spk_0
Everyone played their part, obviously, and everyone is crucial.
spk_0
But Nikki is forcing every member of the band and all their off time to be fucking putting up posters all day long.
spk_0
He's like, if every other band had one poster on the wall, we'd have four.
spk_0
That was Nikki's rule.
spk_0
Nikki said when we went out together, four male degenerates, just like female sluts,
spk_0
people were drawn to our energy.
spk_0
If we walked into the troubadour, everybody came with us.
spk_0
If we split the club, I'm indeed.
spk_0
So cool.
spk_0
Mind you, Tommy and Vince are 18 years old.
spk_0
18.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
They signed early on with this random man who is a construction company owner.
spk_0
They met through a guy who is quote, mix, chauffeur and burrito getter.
spk_0
Whose name was stick.
spk_0
This man was from Grass Valley in Northern California.
spk_0
His name was Alan Kaufman.
spk_0
He was 38 years old, which at the time was ancient to them.
spk_0
And he would give them 50 bucks.
spk_0
And they bought Coke with it.
spk_0
And they were like, we have a manager now.
spk_0
Beautiful.
spk_0
Beautiful.
spk_0
He wrote the first big press release for them.
spk_0
I say big in quotes.
spk_0
Here's what it said.
spk_0
Molly Crew is what the youth of the 80s have been waiting for.
spk_0
The sound to move to.
spk_0
The words that speak.
spk_0
And the looks that heroes are made of.
spk_0
Molly Crew is not a rebellion, but a revolution in rock.
spk_0
A return to the hard driving sound of the Beatles.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
Re-energized for the 80s.
spk_0
Gorgeous.
spk_0
They play their first show at the whiskey.
spk_0
Because Nikki goes in there all the time and harasses slash charm,
spk_0
slash bags, D-D-Keele, who is an extremely interesting figure.
spk_0
And if you're interested in more lore about the sunset strip in the 70s and 80s,
spk_0
you need to go listen to the podcast, groupies,
spk_0
digest go hopper, and Dylan Tupper Rupert.
spk_0
Anyways, D-D-Keele is heavily interviewed in that.
spk_0
She's very interesting.
spk_0
But she basically turned her groupied him into becoming the right hand woman of the whiskey.
spk_0
She is like, okay fine.
spk_0
You guys can play.
spk_0
And she puts them on like some like off night or whatever,
spk_0
but they fucking sell it out.
spk_0
And slash said, I saw Molly play for the first time with the whiskey.
spk_0
The thing I remember most was the band's impact.
spk_0
They had the audience in the palm of their hands.
spk_0
And they had a production going.
spk_0
That was as professional as you can get at the whiskey.
spk_0
They had flashpots, the lights, the drum riser, all the blood, the outfits, and everything.
spk_0
Back then, Van Halen was the band that really defined the LA scene.
spk_0
But there was an element to them that was so glitzy and I couldn't stand it.
spk_0
That spread across LA when they took off.
spk_0
When Motley came out, it was something that was different.
spk_0
They were a little more hardcore and that appealed to me.
spk_0
Well, that was an interesting distinction.
spk_0
Like Motley was kind of bridging this gap, not even a gap,
spk_0
but bridging this thing between, we talked about the fear and the germs of it all,
spk_0
the like, you know, sort of like gutter punk thing that's going on in LA, right?
spk_0
And then you have this glitzy Van Halen thing.
spk_0
And then you have Molly Crew, who is like the secret third thing
spk_0
that is bringing in elements of both.
spk_0
Like they want to be huge.
spk_0
They want to be famous.
spk_0
They want to have a fucking production, a theater show,
spk_0
but they also are fucking grimy and gnarly like a punk band.
spk_0
That was a new thing.
spk_0
Didn't exist.
spk_0
Didn't exist.
spk_0
We wouldn't have a guns and roses.
spk_0
Also, they wanted to take it to the top.
spk_0
They want, you said that really early.
spk_0
Like Nikki wanted to be a big star.
spk_0
He didn't want to be a punk, you know?
spk_0
He also didn't want to be the New York Dolls.
spk_0
He wanted to be this huge, huge mega thing, right?
spk_0
Totally.
spk_0
Totally.
spk_0
I mean, the New York Dolls didn't want to be the New York Dolls.
spk_0
The New York Dolls also wanted to be a huge, huge mega thing.
spk_0
All the shit.
spk_0
That's the thing that people kind of forget about the original punk thing.
spk_0
They all wanted to be big and maybe...
spk_0
The most wanted to be a big star.
spk_0
Totally.
spk_0
It didn't become a thing until like a little bit later
spk_0
that it was like uncool to have ambition or whatever.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
So they're doing good.
spk_0
They're playing shows, the whiskey, they're selling out.
spk_0
People are knowing them.
spk_0
And then Nikki said, I remember back then,
spk_0
somebody in my van saying to me,
spk_0
bro, we're doing three nights at the whiskey.
spk_0
We made it.
spk_0
And I said, made what?
spk_0
I want to sell out the forum.
spk_0
I don't care about the whiskey, a go-go.
spk_0
Everything Motley did in those days was at least to my eyes
spk_0
a stepping stone to something bigger.
spk_0
We approached everything from the perspective
spk_0
of don't just tackle the quarterback,
spk_0
break his arms and legs too.
spk_0
Football metaphor.
spk_0
So they're doing great.
spk_0
But guess what?
spk_0
No one is going to sign them still.
spk_0
Because it was still all about new wave.
spk_0
It was the knack.
spk_0
It was the go-go's.
spk_0
Nikki said, we didn't know about charts or radio program
spk_0
directors or new wave.
spk_0
All we knew about was raw fucking martial stacks of rock and roll
spk_0
blasting in our crutches.
spk_0
And how much fucking blow,
spk_0
perkadan, quailudes, and alcohol we could get for free.
spk_0
I don't even know what perkadan is like perkassette.
spk_0
Is it pre-cursor to perkassette?
spk_0
So they make their own label.
spk_0
They're like, we're going to put out our album
spk_0
ourselves.
spk_0
It's called leather records with a U
spk_0
where the U would be at the end.
spk_0
This is very interesting because it ties into something
spk_0
I want to say about the first album right now.
spk_0
Just before they decide to put out their own album,
spk_0
Brian Slagel of Metal Blade Records
spk_0
had asked them to be on this now very iconic compilation
spk_0
he did called Metal Massacre.
spk_0
I think said no or just didn't work out.
spk_0
But you know whose first piece of recorded music
spk_0
is on Metal Massacre.
spk_0
Taxi Rose.
spk_0
Metallica.
spk_0
Oh wow.
spk_0
Hit the lights.
spk_0
Wow.
spk_0
So it's it could very interesting, right?
spk_0
And I say that because I do now we're going to talk about it's now it's
spk_0
you know we're putting out in May they put out the first single
spk_0
Stick to Your Guns, Toast of the Town,
spk_0
and then they put out Too Fast for Love in November 10th 1981.
spk_0
The first song is Live Wire.
spk_0
To my ears, Live Wire has a bit of a thrash metal element to it.
spk_0
It's that fast guitar you know,
spk_0
like I hit the lights and a Live Wire not that spiritually
spk_0
dissimilar except for Live Wire has the cheese
spk_0
of like in a beautiful way.
spk_0
The like corniness a little bit of a glamour and has a bridge
spk_0
which like wouldn't really have a bridge.
spk_0
I have a million percent agree with you.
spk_0
Okay I mean I love that.
spk_0
I love when you a million percent agree with me.
spk_0
I think that those songs work beautifully together.
spk_0
Okay so Too Fast for Love,
spk_0
they make 900 copies.
spk_0
They recorded it in three drunken days.
spk_0
The cover is a homage is an homage to sticky fingers.
spk_0
That's a Vince on the cover by the way.
spk_0
Nice.
spk_0
The cut close up of the crotch.
spk_0
It's a great cover.
spk_0
Live Wire again we said it before.
spk_0
It was like again this song goes crazy.
spk_0
I fear I'm sorry.
spk_0
So good.
spk_0
It's so good.
spk_0
So good.
spk_0
I was not aware of your game Molly crew.
spk_0
I came into this really like knowing three Molly crew songs.
spk_0
Oh yeah that's one.
spk_0
If there's three Molly crew songs that's definitely one of them.
spk_0
No I didn't know that one.
spk_0
I know again I'm a newbie.
spk_0
I knew girls girls girls.
spk_0
Doctor feel good and shower the devil.
spk_0
So imagine my surprise.
spk_0
I will say something very funny because before I got into this I asked.
spk_0
I was just kind of polling a few people and I was like what's your vibe on Molly crew
spk_0
and I asked Patty Shemmel the iconic former drummer of the band hole.
spk_0
One of the coolest women alive and she was like oh yeah.
spk_0
Yeah great band.
spk_0
Tommy Lee loves the cowbell and it's so fucking true when you listen to a
spk_0
Molly crew especially this album.
spk_0
There is an egregious amount of cowbell in live wire.
spk_0
There's a ton of cowbell like showcase cowbell.
spk_0
I first heard this album.
spk_0
I'm gonna say it was like 15 years ago and I was on a photo shoot with Terry Richardson.
spk_0
We were in his studio and he played the record and then he and like some other people
spk_0
all man when this came out it was the end all fucking be all of the sons of strip and L.A.
spk_0
piece of your action live wire two fast per love and I just remembered I don't know it's just like
spk_0
hit me. I was like what the fuck is this it's so good.
spk_0
I was very curious like what the vibe was and I finally found like one or two lines about it
spk_0
because I was like what is again we just talked about this right the star would has fear the germs
spk_0
like black flag like what the fuck is the vibe of black flag show when Nikki six walks in with
spk_0
high heels and a fucking hair up to the ceiling and they they didn't like it they they tried to
spk_0
beat them up and call them that word yeah yeah yeah I would not surprise yeah public enemy number one
spk_0
this album is grown on me so much like when I first heard some of the songs I was like
spk_0
this song is a bit of an L.O.L. but now I love it.
spk_0
The best ones were live wire and two fast per love right and Mary go round I think Mary
spk_0
go on is like low key my favorite okay it's kind of New York Dolls okay here's what I wanted to
spk_0
get into I do feel like this album is like almost like damn it's almost like if the New York Dolls
spk_0
could have gotten it together to like it's better than the New York Dolls album and I know I'm
spk_0
gonna get crucified every six ways from Sunday for saying that but like the New York Dolls had
spk_0
so many strengths but making a good album was not one of them they did not make good albums they
spk_0
made two pretty mediocre to bad albums they were blueprint for so much that came forward major
spk_0
iconic important I don't put that New York Dolls album on do you no nobody does but this because
spk_0
here's what I want to say on with the show which I think is an underrated track to be honest
spk_0
this is like very much with the New York Dolls we're doing which is like it's like kind of one of
spk_0
those like teenage what are they called Teen Angel Teen Suicide you know that that was like a big
spk_0
thing and do-wop girl group days was these songs about teenagers dying
spk_0
the car was star upon the railroad track that's kind of the vibe of on with the show right that's
spk_0
Frankie died just the other night some say it was suicide but we know how the story goes like
spk_0
this the the thematic concerns and the even the like chorus of this is kind of like a girl group
spk_0
do-wop song which is exactly what the New York Dolls were super inspired by that's what Johnny
spk_0
thunders was like obsessed with so I'm like oh that's you can follow that through line really
spk_0
back to the New York Dolls I mean starry eyes as like really little tender lyric if she'll hold
spk_0
you like a man supposed to be held okay Nikki Nikki writes all the words too Nikki writes everything
spk_0
these are Nikki songs I think Mick gets credited also because he writes the guitar parts like the
spk_0
solos and stuff but these Nikki writes the songs in the words and then men sings them too fast for
spk_0
love is crazy good what do what do you love about it listen I love doing drugs I love like hot guys
spk_0
and I love being like an animal so all those three things plus drums and guitar that's why I
spk_0
fucking love this song yassi that's why it's I'm a fuck it because I love like animal house glam
spk_0
muppets it really is it loves it's like upside down over sex muppets I love living on a jet making
spk_0
love to someone else's dreams whoo I'm I just fucking love it it's so good I think it's also because
spk_0
again it's it's still it's kind it's it's a bit punk it's a bit garage I like the garage totally
spk_0
garage I love the production value of this me too me too I think that's what part of what makes
spk_0
it really cool is how it's like like I wish that they had I actually do really wish that they had
spk_0
stayed more garagey that was not a stylistic choice that was a limitation that was a limitation
spk_0
obviously actually is remarkably good to me like what I really do in the end I love I love the
spk_0
animal house muppets show drugs naked sex freak out garage rock badly probably badly recorded
spk_0
thing about it like oh my god the vince's vocals but also the sort of like kind of crooked sideways
spk_0
back up vocals it's just oh my god that's Tommy and Mick it just it really feels like they did it
spk_0
in a garage in five minutes and they probably did and it's 44 years later and I just think it sounds
spk_0
so good the one we hear is remix right by Roy Thomas Baker and it's it's like you could only do
spk_0
so much like I love it I can't stop listening to Mary go on marrying around
spk_0
it's kind of mournful it's like this weird mourn there's a great live version of it on the like
spk_0
re-release of of it it's just you hear vince doing his like stage banter and like he's like it's just
spk_0
it's just wonderful
spk_0
the cover art you guys go look at it it's first of all they're fucking stylizing of their name
spk_0
the like the leather pants that like lace up the front with the one glove and all the jewelry and
spk_0
the belt oh it's so cool I love it it's just the energy is so it's just and it's funny to me too
spk_0
I just everything in with how I like yeah I couldn't agree with you more oh god we also I mean we
spk_0
it kind of goes without saying but we haven't said it Nikki is so gorgeous Tommy is so gorgeous
spk_0
vince you know has the chicks going crazy mick is there also mick also does look cool he looks super
spk_0
cool he looks like he looks menacing he has like he has like this like sort of like the he looks like
spk_0
the satanic the scary part of the band the blacky-law is yeah like it's almost grandpa but it's also
spk_0
working honey it works for me so again the only main 900 copies this guy named Bill Hine
spk_0
of Green World distribution bought it to distribute and he says they eventually sold 30,000
spk_0
copies that's not like of all time shirts way more than that but like it like popped off like they
spk_0
sold out the 900 really fast that month after this album comes out at its album release party at
spk_0
the troubadour Nikki meets and starts dating Lita Ford oh so cool Molly crew and the December it
spk_0
gets a write up in the LA times first big piece of press by a guy named dawn waller who attended
spk_0
their show at a place called the country club in recita that actually went on for a long time and
spk_0
I think you said hardcore shows too in like in the 90s that doesn't exist anymore but dawn waller
spk_0
he is not a fan he says in just eight months Molly crew is risen to headline status on the local
spk_0
heavy metal scene based on the quartets Friday night performance at the country club it appears
spk_0
this meteoric accent is more a result of the attention generated by the group's extremely exaggerated
spk_0
image than by anything remotely resembling musical innovation um and that's my don't know
spk_0
also you know what I just think they were like minor threat or blah blah like fuck all these dumb
spk_0
losers that are just like bombs worry different from crying call us a baguette if you want you dumb
spk_0
pieces of shit like that's why they're not changing you know I'm saying like they're like we're okay
spk_0
we're good you're ugly right we're fucking hot I mean you don't get the chicks you're literally
spk_0
ugly sorry they're all in the interactive man yeah I'm older than any of them sure okay fine but
spk_0
but but the rest of them are ugly they plan new years you've show at a Santa Monica civics center
spk_0
I want to say it sells out immediately David Lee Roth introduces them on stage I guess they had
spk_0
already written shout out the devil and they played it at this show so I didn't mention this but
spk_0
they all live together in Motley House which is an apartment like right around the corner from the
spk_0
whiskey that is an absolute detritus filled devastation house like they never threw their trash out
spk_0
they just kept putting it on the balcony so the balcony was just sky high you couldn't even open
spk_0
the door to the balcony one because it was just like rotting trash describes beautifully in the dirt
spk_0
yeah just gotta be able to in the bird they're just partying they're lighting things should on fire
spk_0
they're bringing chicks there they're doing cocaine they had a huge after party after this
spk_0
New Year's Eve thing and David Lee Roth comes that's also memorialized the dirt film all right so
spk_0
now it's 1982 enter Tom Zutat he was an an art electra fun fact Tom Zutat went to high school with
spk_0
Kim Fale of Sound Guard and in Chicago he's a baby an art electra he is actually I saw in this
spk_0
documentary that I just started watching that he was not even an an or he was like something else
spk_0
at first and he had lunch with the president son and the president son was like what do you think
spk_0
of all the bands that my dad is signing and he was like I think they fucking suck and I guess the
spk_0
son went and told the dad and the dad called him into his office and was like I heard you heard
spk_0
you talking about me and he was like well what do you think you know and he's like well you could
spk_0
assign this you could assign this you could assign he brings up all these like hits and he's like well
spk_0
do you approve of that and he was like yeah here's what that here's like it wasn't emails send
spk_0
that emails but like here's like whatever the memos I sent to your an our guys about these bands
spk_0
who later on went to be really successful and they ignored them and he was like okay you know what
spk_0
the next band you find all sign them so it turns into a little an hour now he's driving down
spk_0
sunset boulevard and he pulls over to get a little bite to eat and he sees hundreds of kids
spk_0
trying to get into a concert at the whiskey and he's like what's going on here looks up at the
spk_0
marquee and what does it say Molly crew sold out exactly he said for a band that didn't even have a
spk_0
record deal to be creating that kind of hysteria at the whiskey was pretty where I had to see them
spk_0
they looked amazing Nikki was so intense and seemed like he would be in the streets killing somebody
spk_0
if he wasn't playing bass he had the strings so hard that he kept splitting the skin between his
spk_0
fingers watching him throttle that thing with blood flying off his fingers the strings seem like
spk_0
razor blades Vince was one of the best looking and most charismatic singers I had ever seen
spk_0
women's legs spread open just watching him sing he was the exact opposite of the guitarist
spk_0
looking at him was like seeing Saint and reincarnated though he turned out to be the nicest of the
spk_0
bunch when he wasn't drinking Tommy looks like an overexcited kid but at the same time he seemed
spk_0
like the only natural born musician in the band he was a high quality drummer a good showman
spk_0
and constantly in motion he seemed like the linchpin that held the whole thing together so Tom Zita
spk_0
is like we have to sign them and still electric kind of laps in their face but then Joe's like okay
spk_0
Joe Smith he was a chairman he's like okay fine go sign them you you say you can do this let's do it
spk_0
Tom Zita said I was the laughing stock of Hollywood recording these guys the music that was
spk_0
popular at the time was British new wave haircut 100 a flock of seagulls dexies midnight runners
spk_0
hipber kids were in took Elvis Costello the clash and other bands riding the tail end of the punk
spk_0
movement everyone kept laughing at me for trying to sign a metal band that's what's going on
spk_0
really interesting really interesting so he signs them they want to re-release too fast for love
spk_0
they get a remix going with Roy Thomas Baker who had produced hawk wind queen the cars
spk_0
alas Cooper is a big deal now before it comes out again on an electric they're put on tour
spk_0
in Canada very random called cruising through Canada wow here's what happened it was set up by
spk_0
their managers assistant Eric grief who honestly Loki ended up being some sort of PR
spk_0
spengali because the band gets arrested and released an Edmonton international airport for
spk_0
wearing their spiked stage wardrobe that was considered dangerous weapons through customs
spk_0
and then also they got arrested another time for Neil having a Vince Neil having a carry on
spk_0
of porn magazines but both of these things were staged PR stunts that Eric grief set up so they
spk_0
would get press also a bomb threat that was also fake anyways that's a little bit crazy to do a
spk_0
bomb threat to get press but you know they were they were getting on the front page of the Edmonton
spk_0
journal babe so the tour is like a financial disaster but they get all this press and then later
spk_0
Thompson taught us like we never understood why Kaufman made the band tour Canada until the truth
spk_0
came out in a lawsuit later he had sold a portion of his stake in the band to a kid in Michigan
spk_0
named Bill Larson who had pulled his parents life savings about twenty five thousand dollars so
spk_0
that he could own five percent of Molly crew and in order for Kaufman to collect the money he had
spk_0
to send the band up north to tour so how it's right or off after that that Molly crew get new
spk_0
management this is when Doug Taylor and Doc McGee come into the picture their manager right now was
spk_0
like the one that can get the good cook right yeah it was just the construction guy Alan Kaufman I
spk_0
think was the same they had also met with Cliff Bernstein which is really interesting Cliff Bernstein
spk_0
famously of Q prime who managed Metallica forever but Cliff Bernstein again managed Metallica forever
spk_0
was like nope these people are unmanageable I nobody can do that that is not possible and I will not
spk_0
do that good luck to you Doc McGee and what's the other guy's name Doug Taylor and they were the
spk_0
managers like through the album Molly crew or something like yeah they until when we'll get into
spk_0
it until an ill-fated Russian charity concert with Juan Jovi okay so they put out the
spk_0
electra version in August according to Zutat the promotions department electra was like not even
spk_0
trying to promote it kind of sabotaging it but then a new guy came on as head of an R at
spk_0
electra named Tom Wormen he had produced Ted Nuget and cheap tricks he was really into Molly crew
spk_0
so he kind of changed that too fast for love ends up selling a hundred thousand copies so
spk_0
everything's going good until a new guy comes into run electra Bob Kras now he fires Tom Wormen
spk_0
he decides rock music is dead doesn't want any rock bands on the label has the Molly crew video
spk_0
taken off MTV for being embarrassing the one you sent me that you were like you have to watch this
spk_0
is crazy it's way way way on it's take me to the top right take me to the top yeah it's really bad yeah
spk_0
he was like this isn't embarrassing remove this from MTV it isn't bad so then the managers come to Bob
spk_0
Krasner like listen obviously you don't want this band what will it take for you to release them
spk_0
from their contract and Bob Krasner was like listen I'll tell you what you make the best record
spk_0
that you can make don't worry about money keep the budget reasonable though I won't promise you
spk_0
that I'll put it out but I'll promise that I'll make it easy for you if you want to take it someplace
spk_0
else so that's the kind of like the enter today I'm going into the next making the album now it's
spk_0
1983 that's not the worst energy right no it's pretty great it's kind of fun to have sick yeah
spk_0
it's like would never happen today it's like they would absolutely be like I own you you can't put out
spk_0
anything ever again you can't go anywhere else you're just dead yeah they play this thing called
spk_0
the US festival in May do you know about this this is this like insane festival that was put on by
spk_0
Steve Wozniak the co-founder of Apple and Bill Graham famous promoter basically Steve Wozniak
spk_0
who was by all accounts very cool played by Seth Rogan in the film about uh what's his name
spk_0
Apple guy he thought the 1970s were the me generation and he wanted his festivals to encourage the
spk_0
80s to be more community oriented and combine technology with rock music quite ahead of his time
spk_0
honestly so four day festival he basically like had this new venue built which still exists and they
spk_0
have mostly from what I understand raves there it's called the Glenn Helen Regional Park outside of
spk_0
LA four days new wave day here's who played on new wave day okay divinals in excess flock of seagulls
spk_0
and the fucking clash babe this is why I know about this because I know about from the clash research
spk_0
it's their last ever show with McDones is this festival rock day with Los Lobos you two the
spk_0
pretenders and David Bowie country day with Hank Williams junior Willie Nelson Emile Harris and
spk_0
Whalen Jennings and heavy metal day Motley quiet right Aussie Osborne Judas Priest Van Halen
spk_0
Coachella who babe this was yeah what what a four day spectacle what a four day special this is when
spk_0
Bob Kras now is like actually never mind Molly Cruz fucking amazing like he's he's an attendance
spk_0
and he's like I changed my mind they're amazing I'm the energy the stage energy the state they're
spk_0
so good live seeing the fans seeing the response to like the metal something's happening something's
spk_0
happening the eighties are hey you know what's happening the eighties the eighties are eighties in
spk_0
in 1883 shout out at the devil is the album while they're making it that they get extremely
spk_0
super into cocaine very much into cocaine they love to party they love to party they have all
spk_0
of a sudden a lot of money Nikki buys a Porsche with his publishing deal money crashes it pretty much
spk_0
right away after a party hurts his shoulders super badly the story is actually I can't get into
spk_0
every single one of their crazy stories because we'll be here all day but that's the story of where
spk_0
he like wasn't supposed to leave the party it's like the guy it was at the producer's house where he
spk_0
would like walk the doors so that no one could drive home drunk but Nikki like snuck out drove his
spk_0
fucking portion to like a pole or a palm tree or something got out and like walked home but his
spk_0
shoulder was so fucked up that he got on pain pills the way these guys were partying is not it's
spk_0
not human people don't party the way these motherfuckers were partying well also it's like we'll get
spk_0
into it the consequences are extreme well but also not as extreme as they would be now like the
spk_0
consequences are actually quite fucking light like yeah you could crash your Porsche into a fucking
spk_0
telephone pole then walk home and not go to jail Nikki didn't go to jail nothing happened to him
spk_0
like he just got he just got addicted to pain pills in the narrow end because he had fucked up his
spk_0
shoulder this anyways that I bring that up say that's how I got in heroin him and Vince start kind
spk_0
of doing some heroin they just love rock and roll they love rock and roll they go on tour with kiss
spk_0
around this time they're kicked off the tour this is the creatures of the night tour because
spk_0
Gene Simmons thinks they're too they party too much they have that behavior do they hate kiss at
spk_0
this point they do now because they think kisses a bunch of pussy bitches for kicking them off the
spk_0
tour for being too cool and fun yeah yeah all right let's talk about shout out at the devil produced by
spk_0
Tom Mormon Nikki said it was the beginning of the end as far as fun was concerned unlimited cocaine
spk_0
Tommy knew these shady characters from Seamy Valley who would stop by the studio and bring ounces of
spk_0
coke we would stay up for three days straight making music and not even think we were working hard
spk_0
girls were streaming in and out of the studio getting fucked with microphones in the control room
spk_0
bottles in the kitchen and broom handles in the closet because we were running out of ideas of
spk_0
what to do with them see there's parts of the dirt where I was like gun in my mouth I would not
spk_0
admit these things that you guys admitted in print all I'm saying is this is a great book and it is
spk_0
an amazing yassie and I are not condoning this behavior before saying what a fucking time capsule
spk_0
and how well it's put together I just have to say that for y'all that are blah blah blah lying but
spk_0
these guys did it I mean I don't think I can't imagine some of this shit I do appreciate
spk_0
how candid they are I also like listen I am a I love drugs people I'm a drug addict I'm sober
spk_0
sometimes you just gotta look at you know you the wreckage of your past and be like yeah I don't
spk_0
do that anymore I did that I've like worked hard up being a better person right like I like that
spk_0
they're not like faking that they weren't like the ultimate party gods I guess one thing that
spk_0
jumped out at me from reading the dirt and again is why I'm like team Nikki six is like the only
spk_0
person that talks about it with any level of self awareness and like remorse and like understanding
spk_0
that oh hey this was fucked up is Nikki six right because even by that point yeah I think he had
spk_0
already started 12 step you can tell you know you can totally tell when someone's done
spk_0
yeah and and that is such a compliment I'm a 12 step stand I think I think it's if you people
spk_0
use it right it's amazing it's fucking free like get with it if you need it like but like you really
spk_0
like sense that whereas like and then Tommy just like really seems like a nice person who just is like
spk_0
you know he's doing the best he can make didn't participate in any of this from what I can tell
spk_0
does it want to know why he's just going to waste it by himself and then we just Vince we'll get to it
spk_0
we'll get to it different a bit of a different energy so the inspiration and vibe of shout out the
spk_0
devil is like now you can see like look too fast for love which we love up and down we love long time
spk_0
is like many of the most magical moments in rock and roll music a product of limitations
spk_0
this was not Nikki six is ultimate vision realized this was just we need to make an album we have
spk_0
three days we have no money we're wasted let's get it out there and we love it but that is not
spk_0
what Nikki six would have made if he had his master plan yeah now we're getting into the master plan
spk_0
which is we talked about the blackie lawless of it all right this pentagram stuff shout out the
spk_0
devil Nikki said I had ideas for the album the tour that had to do with the mass psychology of evil
spk_0
behind Nazism and the Anton Levee books on St. Nism I had grand ideas of creating a tour that
spk_0
looks like a cross between a Nazi rally and a black church service with Molly crew symbols instead
spk_0
of swastik is everywhere one thing you can't say about Nikki six is that the man is not a thinker the
spk_0
man is reading books the man is having philosophies he was generally on some like theatrical performance
spk_0
make you think level of creative direction here it might not have landed properly and perhaps
spk_0
had the heavy metal audience with all love and tenderness and respect in my heart is maybe not
spk_0
you know picking up what you're putting down on that four-dimensional level but Nikki was thinking
spk_0
that okay yes but also he as the leader is seeing this whole world and creating this crazy like
spk_0
pop metal thing for the kids to freak out over he's a genius Nikki I was going record and say
spk_0
Nikki's a genius and also he gets pop like he's not trying to like put the Anton Levee and the
spk_0
the Nazi propaganda down the kids throw it and he's also not like a Nazi he's just saying like
spk_0
I'm looking at the commentary he just said the psychology of evil he's trying to make a commentary
spk_0
of it but of course you know that sort of gets flattened down and it's just shock shockery or whatever
spk_0
did I ever tell you that I love in the beginning no why tell me why I love the propaganda spoken
spk_0
like newscaster thing in the beginning because it's giving like total recall meets
spk_0
I'm not a fan of magga naggish to pick up in the beginning and just but they can't because it's
spk_0
also not it's also about going shot at the devil it's like it sounds like Donald Trump it's
spk_0
from 1983 it sounds like propaganda that you're hearing now as they're like closing down the ability
spk_0
of press or blah blah blah whatever like it like it or not it sounds like 2025 let me let me put it
spk_0
that way I'll read some of it it's really smart in the beginning good always overpowered the
spk_0
evils of all man sins but in time the nations grew weak and our cities fell to slums while
spk_0
evils stood strong in the dusts of hell lurk the blackest of hate for who you fear awaits you
spk_0
now many many lifetimes later laid destroyed beaten down only the corpses of rebels ashes of dreams
spk_0
and bloodstained sheets it has been written that those who have the youth have the future so come now
spk_0
children of the beast be strong and shout at the devil and then shout at the devil starts
spk_0
it's wonderful I mean I got the chills just reading that like that is that's beautiful like
spk_0
nicky six is a is a really good writer of you know he's he's a wordsmith
spk_0
I like it and I like the fact that this is so all the and that it speaks to now I think it's
spk_0
cool the theater of it right it's the grovy toss the guy speaking in his name is Jeff workwood
spk_0
and he was a english producer but yeah then it goes into shout at the devil and I think they use
spk_0
it live all the time like right to like introduce shows or even just before they play shout at the
spk_0
devil what do you make of shout at the devil I love it it's like they're totally ridiculous and it's
spk_0
totally like if you and I were we're like 28 year old metal heads in 1983 I do not think that we
spk_0
would have been undershot the devil I know you think it was too like too goffey to like like I love
spk_0
Christian death only theater of pain and I love shout at the devil but if I was there at the time
spk_0
what I have loved only theater of pain yes but what I have loved shout at the devil I don't know
spk_0
maybe I would have loved them both I this moment of theirs is great the look is crazy they've really
spk_0
pull the look in yeah they're doing the football thing like you said and I forgot that that came from
spk_0
Nikki being a quarterback I like shout at the devil man I like it it's a world the world building
spk_0
they're world building totally I kind of motherfucking love the song I think it's pretty great honestly
spk_0
the chorus of the way that they're all chanting is like very cool also I know this is kind of sound
spk_0
so crazy but I have to speak my truth I feel like he'll be the love in your eyes he'll be the blood
spk_0
between your thighs is such a fucking god tier lyric like it's so cool I was about to say that
spk_0
looks the kills ridiculous the videos ridiculous I highly recommend watching it but you'll be like whoa
spk_0
whoa whoa it's so 80s it's so great it's like the cover of this album like the like four squares of like
spk_0
they're like this is when they get this is you mentioned the look change this is when they get a little
spk_0
more they like they stray a little away from the punky near a doll's thing into like mad max
spk_0
like they have these like spiky shoulder things like it's more of like it's something different you
spk_0
know like babe like like sexy guar or something like I don't know I don't know how to describe it but
spk_0
the kids seem to love it no I think the kids loved it it sold 200,000 copies in the first two weeks
spk_0
it hit number 17 on the billboard 200 it eventually went four times platinum I will say when it
spk_0
went platinum nicky I guess like had gone to pick up the platinum award there's parties or something
spk_0
and he meets demy Moore at the party do you remember this story it's in the dirt it's in the dirt
spk_0
so then he flies to nan tuket to meet some girls and I guess it's like a tiny airport and demy Moore is
spk_0
like at the air strip with bobcat gold waif I just have a bunch of question marks here and then nicky's
spk_0
like getting off the plane wasted holding his platinum award thing in a bottle of jack daniels with a
spk_0
big bag of cocaine in his pocket and he trips and falls each shit down the fucking stairs and
spk_0
the bottle smashes and the award hits him in the head and then demy Moore pulls him a silator and
spk_0
like hey babe there's this thing called a it did not he didn't listen at that time but I just
spk_0
did think that was a cool story keep coming back nicky keep coming back it works if you work it
spk_0
the song bastard on here which is really not my favorite but I'll just mention that it was
spk_0
targeted by tipper gore you guys you guys what a time it was when again I was barely I was one
spk_0
years old here so I don't remember it but I do remember growing up in the shadow of the parental
spk_0
advisory stickers because these really exist before then the PMRC and they were like
spk_0
book this song the song is crazy I know it's the one that repeatedly says please don't
spk_0
rape me or don't try to rape me I got nothing to lose we're really gonna screw you consider that
spk_0
bastard dead yeah you can't beat the dark don't try to rape me ah yes it's
spk_0
make mars said that it wasn't a call to violence but it actually about a certain person that we used
spk_0
to work with that we felt we were stabbed in the back way so there's the lore behind that you're
spk_0
the king of the sleaze yossi king of the sleaze bit again the album as a whole I think has like
spk_0
a pretty great like you said world building a through line there are not very many memorable
spk_0
songs in my I mean there's the cover of helter skelter well I don't care about that I care about
spk_0
two young to fall in love and I care about in the beginning and shout at the devil I don't really
spk_0
care about it looks the kill is funny and so I love it but it's so stupid but I really love two
spk_0
young to fall in love what do you like about to young to fall in love well you're killing me your
spk_0
loves a guillotine why don't you just set me free oh man run for the hills we're both sinners
spk_0
and saints not a woman but a whore I can just taste the hate well now I'm killing you watch your
spk_0
face turn in blue I mean come on and I'm really great it's really great I had a sense of humor do you
spk_0
not but it's really great I I will also point out we mentioned it lightly but Nikki six is also
spk_0
obsessed with arosmith obsessed they're not yet a man just a punk in the street or
spk_0
I maybe it's just just a punk in the street that is a line from the song last child by arosmith
spk_0
also we were talking about shout out the devil earlier and I didn't mention this but there's
spk_0
there's lyrics that say my head spinning round and round but in the seasons of wither those are
spk_0
round and round and seasons of wither are two arosmith song titles this is a lot of homage going on
spk_0
here to arosmith there's a definite pattern that where there's like two or three songs on an album
spk_0
that are just so fire that we're talking about them 40 years later but it's not like a 12 for 12
spk_0
kind of situation no it's really not I'll just mention knock them dead kid which I don't think
spk_0
is a great song but it was written on a night that Nikki was arrested for getting into a brawl
spk_0
I think outside the whiskey that ended up including several cops and he lead a forward had to hawk
spk_0
her firebird oh man uh trans am to bail him out and then he got out and went and played a show
spk_0
and then wrote the lyrics of the song
spk_0
first of all two things that we will continue to say on this program we don't condone this behavior
spk_0
and also we love and respect Robert Criscal for all time but he does not understand heavy metal
spk_0
he never has he never liked it when he reviews it it's always negative and he gave a review of
spk_0
shot at the devil in the village voice and this is what it's at it's hardly news that this platinum
spk_0
product is utter dog shit even by heavy metal standards under direct orders from editors who
spk_0
don't know iron maiden from winton marsales my beleaguered colleagues on the daily has been saying
spk_0
so all year and every insult goes into the press kit so I must mention mick mars's dork
spk_0
fingered guitar before getting into the only truly remarkable thing about the record a track called
spk_0
10 seconds to love and when jvince niel actually seems to boast about how fast he can ejaculate or
spk_0
as the lyric sheet puts it come and there and I believe lies the secret of their commercial appeal
spk_0
if you don't got it flaunt it he gave it a D listen I get what he's saying sure
spk_0
like literally this is one of these kind of albums where I'm like I get that review and it's not
spk_0
wrong I don't give a fuck I love it this is a energy yeah and and taste and concept and in a way
spk_0
for me humor because I wouldn't like this album without my sense of humor I mean if I just like
spk_0
liked this album I do find it interesting and I'm sure people listening maybe we'll be like
spk_0
that's very funny that this conversation is between a gay man and a woman because like
spk_0
I am really interested in what about this bit like how this band appealed because their
spk_0
fan base was largely I mean obviously women thought they were hot but it's largely heavy metal
spk_0
bros right and I'm just so like I'm trying to wrap my mind around like what appealed to like
spk_0
bros straight men in 1983 about this band was it the danger was it the like you know the clam of
spk_0
like these you know when you see other men who are like obviously when men are like those
spk_0
guys get chicks they're cool you know like like I'm just I can't know because I am too young and
spk_0
also I'm not a man so I don't know producer Rob like loves them he found them later in because
spk_0
he's only a couple years older than me he found them he said later in high school and I think he
spk_0
just thought they were great and like loved the music I talked to friend of the pod Chris Habib
spk_0
a wonderful artist and a cool very cool great taste and he said he loved Molly Crew he said it
spk_0
showed him a different way to be a man I think I don't want to like miss COVID but it was something
spk_0
to that effect which I thought was interesting it is interesting and that they were fun he was like
spk_0
it was like kind of again what we are also you know like he's like they were fun they didn't take
spk_0
themselves too seriously and it was like joyful you know and like that was really appealing that's
spk_0
what I I think okay to why do I love them so much I think it's that I mean I think it's the history
spk_0
it's the bad behavior paralleling what the music is and it's the energy and those things I love
spk_0
this is what Chris Habib said you know what it is I think boys in the 80s were very sensitive to
spk_0
being marketed to and when they out grew WWF all of a sudden Molly Crew was right there that's
spk_0
actually so genius because WWF is also exactly like right theater the dress the makeup and they were
spk_0
so much messier than entrepreneurs like Deesnider and Jean Simmons but something there felt smart
spk_0
and playful like when Alice Cooper did the Muppet show and it didn't feel like Molly Crew wanted
spk_0
to sell us anything they were very much just inhabiting everything wild and unhinged about that
spk_0
moment and taking us along for the ride it was like watching life cells of the rich and famous
spk_0
like it presayed cribs or something yeah and it also I will say definitely that as uh
spk_0
young person a very young person at this time I was obsessed with WWF you know until like when
spk_0
when I I just like oh my god we would go to WF things all the time like the first time I walked into
spk_0
WWF match we were late and it was the iron chic against Andre the giant and I just remember I
spk_0
remember that so much and I also remember like a crazy drunk man being kicked out and I was like
spk_0
with a giant beer like a crazy fan that's gone insane getting kicked out and I was like this is it
spk_0
like this is so fun you know and the variety and like the chaos was so cool and also like I'm just
spk_0
having a thought he didn't say this but it is making me think of like I mean think about how boys
spk_0
in the 80s were raised on comic books and superheroes that's also very you know like kind of a
spk_0
similar over the top experience of a different kind of masculinity that's like I keep coming back
spk_0
to the word theater but it is theater right what's WWF theater what's Molly Crout theater you know
spk_0
but it's also like really messy theater that's like drugged out to the max and I like this idea of
spk_0
it's it's not that's like marketed yeah it's not contrived or like it's real it's funny because I
spk_0
think the argument would could be made and it was made by the 90s that it was contrived and it
spk_0
was marketed and it was like but then it's like you when you recontextualize it to think about it
spk_0
through the lens of like like a kiss or even like a Fleetwood Mac which was sort of like dominating
spk_0
prior it was so fucked up in chaotic and messy that it couldn't have possibly been structured
spk_0
to sell records in that way am I making sense you're making sense I mean like at the very least
spk_0
it was real danger real sex they were walking the walk-in talking the talk but it was like so
spk_0
deranged and yeah they were making so much money off of it but it felt authentic isn't
spk_0
ironic though that they made their best music and the first album and then continued to like have
spk_0
a big cultural impact in my humble opinion but you think just kind of gets worse and worse
spk_0
respectfully with all the respect in my heart I still think why where's the
spk_0
the I know that's I'm saying you just like track album one track one like if you watch and I highly
spk_0
recommend it if you're having trouble understanding what what Molly crew is and what we're talking
spk_0
about watch early live videos of them because like it's undeniable how much energy and power and like
spk_0
electricity is happening on that stage regardless of whether the songs appeal to you like
spk_0
they definitely had it you know yeah rolling stone also only gave it two stars they said like most
spk_0
self-styled bad boy bands Molly crew look meaner than they sound with their layers of leather and
spk_0
carefully applied makeup their looks suggest all the implied violence required of teeny-bopper anti-heroes
spk_0
but the music the crew used to back up that image is surprisingly mild mannered it's loud sure
spk_0
but that's about as close as to dangerous as it gets motley crew's version of rock and roll is
spk_0
such a careful distillation of black Sabbath kiss and other arena giants that you'd almost think
spk_0
it was developed by MTV's marketing staff in short originality is not this group's long suit but
spk_0
then who expected it to be the whole point of bands like motley crew is to provide cheap thrills
spk_0
to jaded teens and that's where the album ultimately disappoints I read that not because I agree
spk_0
with it but to just point out that critically motley crew is pretty much never supported
spk_0
they critics never like them they never say positive things about them they keep growing
spk_0
on popularity and money and and success commercially but they're never critically given any respect
spk_0
it's so funny because when you read these bad reviews of this album I really understand them
spk_0
but I do not care I don't care if it's schlock I love bad taste I love bad the right bad stuff that's
spk_0
like I mean we all do you know I think you've nailed the appeal of motley crew I think if you pulled
spk_0
the people that were at the shower the double tour and they were like you asked them they weren't
spk_0
they'd be like I don't care I like it that's like oh it's like I don't care I don't care that it's
spk_0
fundamentally or like technically not great I like it yeah and also you guys are fucking losers you
spk_0
don't get it pentagram sex devil yeah blah blah blah like yeah this is not this is not makeup
spk_0
well this is not about like talent like musical talent okay dorks you know this is about some other
spk_0
shit okay dorks it's not about good song structure it's not about writing good songs this is
spk_0
this is about the whole experience which it kind of was yeah at some point after the release
spk_0
of shout out the double niki's mother is institutionalized for a mental breakdown damn I know and
spk_0
when niki visits her the first thing she asks him is did you write looks that kill about me
spk_0
and niki was like I was floored there were so many things I wanted to say to her so many
spk_0
things I wanted her to say to me but that wasn't one of them we hardly spoke we were both too proud
spk_0
or stubborn to apologize for anything so after this he goes home and gets more into drugs he wants
spk_0
my mother I didn't want a home anymore I became crazier and more reckless subconsciously putting
spk_0
myself on the same self destructive path my mother had been on my rock and roll fantasy wasn't just
spk_0
about success and decadence and rebellion anymore it was also about pain and death I was sure I was
spk_0
gonna die before I was 25 whoo dark Molly goes on tour opening for Aussie Osborne on the bark of the
spk_0
moon tour niki said that they were like oh we're kind of you know he's gonna be like kiss he's
spk_0
gonna think you know we're too crazy he's the craziest so oh no honey he is the crazy he was like
spk_0
you will never out crazy me bitch and I don't even fucking try as this is memorialized in the dirt
spk_0
film by the amazing and I'm gonna say one of the only well cast people in that film Tony Cavalero he's
spk_0
amazing Tony Cavalero is so fucking funny he's incredible as Aussie I'll say you know what you've
spk_0
never seen I'm just gonna say horribly cast read the book just read the book is great I'm like
spk_0
wire half the actors British why am I watching like a man who has the most luscious lips and I
spk_0
honestly a gorgeous man played niki six in an British man and she's like I'm like what am I
spk_0
looking at here and also the story is so good with so many details and it's flattened into like
spk_0
a 90 minute Netflix film it's just like it sounds terrible it's brutal babe it is brutal the guy who
spk_0
plays mic mars is actually really good but also British randomly or Irish maybe okay back to this
spk_0
so Aussie's insane they have the best time apparently on this tour though the band starts discussing
spk_0
the possibility of replacing mic mars because he's old and maybe also not the most insanely
spk_0
technically proficient guitarist which again none of them work except for Tommy there's a man
spk_0
did there's some friction it doesn't go anywhere yeah Aussie Osborne's base at the time Bob
spk_0
Daisley was he heard them talking about it and he was like do not try to fix something that isn't
spk_0
broken like don't do it then they're invited to take part in the 1984 monsters of rock festival
spk_0
supporting Van Halen and AC DC this is really just for me to mention that Molly Cruz so insane that
spk_0
they're like getting so fucked up out of their minds niki bit Eddie Van Halen on his stomach and
spk_0
Vince bit him on his hand and got screamed out by his wife the saying don't touch my husband's
spk_0
hand ballie weren't only and Tommy Lee bit Malcolm young from AC they're just biting people like hard
spk_0
like breaking the skin down Van Halen and AC DC did not think this was funny they basically tried
spk_0
to get them kicked off the tour but they couldn't because the band was so popular so the promoter
spk_0
basically came up with this solution Molly crew would go into their trailer right when they got
spk_0
to the venue and then I mean this is what I read I really hope it's true he had a crane come and
spk_0
lift the trailer up off the ground so that they were not able to leave their trailer until it was
spk_0
time for them to play so they couldn't bite anybody wow so good boys gone wild boys gone wild doc
spk_0
dock McGee said we had to apologize every single day of this tour to everybody and we had to pay a
spk_0
15,000 dollar deposit to each hotel before they would allow the band to stay there I've never
spk_0
trashed a hotel room y'all see I don't quite see what the what the fuss is about because I'm like
spk_0
I just like a beautiful hotel room you know me too I that I don't totally get that either I've
spk_0
definitely done self destructive things when I was in my personal Molly crew phase but I don't
spk_0
remember ever trashing any hotel rooms the drugs alcohol and sex I understand and and have
spk_0
experienced first time of course just the trashing of the hotel room to the level of
spk_0
disgusting these guys did but also it's just an observation I don't have anything against it
spk_0
no I think I think why rock stars do this is they're like testing the boundaries of their fame
spk_0
they're testing the boundaries of their importance you know like they're like how much can I get
spk_0
away with is I'm only speaking from the outside but it does kind of feel like that you know
spk_0
yeah yeah in June there's this like really insane article about the band published in hit
spk_0
predator magazine and that is the biggest issue of hit predator magazine that's ever existed I
spk_0
couldn't find the actual article but I found an interview about the article and the person was
spk_0
like oh that was your biggest issue why and the editor guy was like controversy Molly crew is
spk_0
hot as hell and it's also word of mouth I first met Molly crew back in December in Mexico Vince
spk_0
grabs me by the arm and says come with me so I go into the room and the other three guys have this
spk_0
young woman spreading along the bed naked and they're going at her with a wine bottle and I printed it
spk_0
I tried not to make it quite that wrong but I did run it and the word of mouth got around
spk_0
just like you talk about a band who is into the devil the band will sell more copies this thing
spk_0
happened to get out there and caused a bit of a stir seven eleven was gonna take us off the shelves
spk_0
and it just happened to be the right issue at the right time there you go testing the limits of
spk_0
their popularity yes exactly now it's December 8th 1984 this is a bad day are you'll be the worst day
spk_0
in Molly crew history oh no this is the day that there's a big party I believe the party was several
spk_0
days long at Vince's house where Mick Tommy Vince and the guys from Hanoi rocks who were in town
spk_0
were all raging together was like a four day barbecue and booze bender and they ran out of beer
spk_0
then said it had started out as a barbecue to celebrate the kickoff of our third album but nobody
spk_0
wanted to go home Mick was there I guess which was unusual but so that's like the also another crazy
spk_0
part of the story where like Mick gets super wasted and wanders off into the ocean like maybe trying
spk_0
to die but he doesn't really say that but then he doesn't die he just like passes out and is like
spk_0
washed up on the beach like a beach dwellers like passed out and misses all of this so
spk_0
Tommy said Vince wanted to show off his new pantera car so he asked who wanted to make a beer run
spk_0
razzle Nicholas razzle dingley of Hanoi rocks volunteered first and the two of them disappeared
spk_0
out the door the liquor store was only a few blocks away but they were gone for a long ass time
spk_0
then Vince said that night the booze ran out I had just bought a 72 Ford Pantera which is a fast
spk_0
beautiful car razzle wanted to see what it was like to ride in it was bright red on the outside
spk_0
with a sleek black interior we were both fucked up and shouldn't have driven especially since the
spk_0
store was only a couple blocks away and we could have easily walked but we just didn't give it a
spk_0
second thought razzle wore high tops leather pants and a frilly shirt a 24 seven rock and roll god
spk_0
he wouldn't ever be caught in the jeans and a Hawaiian shirt I was wearing we squeezed into the
spk_0
parking lot picked up a couple hundred dollars in beer and liquor to keep the party going the car
spk_0
had no back seat so razzle held the bags of booze in his lap in the passenger seat on the way
spk_0
home we were driving along a hilly road that wound up the coast it was full of little dips and hills
spk_0
and out as I was heading up on a slight incline there was a small bend ahead just before the top
spk_0
of the hill it was dark and for some reason the streets were wet since I hadn't been outside that
spk_0
night I wasn't sure if it had been raining lightly or if the streets had just been washed as I
spk_0
approached the bend I noticed the gutter on the side of the road was full and was draining water
spk_0
and sewage as the car rounded the curve I shifted into second gear for the final stretch home
spk_0
as I did so the wheels chirped and the car suddenly slid sideways into the water to the left into
spk_0
the lane for oncoming traffic I tried to maneuver out of the skid but as I struggled with the steering
spk_0
wheel a pair of lights board out on me something was coming over the top of the hill and heading
spk_0
straight for us that was the last thing I saw before I was knocked unconscious when my head cleared
spk_0
razzle was lying in my lap I forced my mouth to smile for him as if to say thank god we're all
spk_0
right but he didn't respond oh like really like breaks my heart like it makes me want to cry
spk_0
right now like it's so awful so awful I hate also that this it just I feel so much for
spk_0
razzle and first family that like because it's motley crew like this was a real person with a
spk_0
full life and like a band and like everything and he's sort of been reduced to a footnote in the
spk_0
motley crew story and I hate that you know like it really it really upsets me thinking about that
spk_0
because that's kind of like what how he's spoken about yes I mean that's the tragedy of like early
spk_0
death and the two people in the car coming down that died oh my god yeah one was in a coma and yeah
spk_0
two young people you know they're biased ruined apparently Vince Neal had been going 65 and a 25
spk_0
yeah it's about his breathalyzer read point one seven quite high point 08 as you know is the legal
spk_0
limit at the police station I guess he kept asking for razzle and an officer finally just told him
spk_0
your friend's dead he is at home and Tommy and Vince was married at this time his wife tried to
spk_0
comfort him and people keep calling and then his manager's like the police are gonna arrest you
spk_0
for vehicular manslaughter so he went to the station and turned himself in the people in the car
spk_0
that he had hit that you just mentioned they also were real people with real lives and names Daniel
spk_0
Smithers and Lisa Hogan they were a young couple Hogan suffered brain damage and went into a coma
spk_0
Daniel Smithers was in traction apparently producer Rob just told me that Lisa Hogan at the time
spk_0
was a recovering addict and she had gotten clean and then this happened their parents were at
spk_0
the preliminary hearing Vince Neal said as I stood there I knew I should be in jail for what
spk_0
happened even if it was technically an accident I mean well yeah it was technically an accident
spk_0
but because you were arrested going 65 if I had been just an ordinary guy without
spk_0
fame or money I probably would have been locked up on the spot instead I was released on a
spk_0
$2,500 bail until the trial so their manager his managers are like you need to go to rehab
spk_0
and the Vince Neal even in this even after this he's like I'm not an alcoholic I told him I'm
spk_0
not an alcoholic there's no way I was going to be treated like I had a problem I wasn't a
spk_0
whine-o lying in a gutter but the court required it so he goes to a 30 day rehab detox intense
spk_0
therapy thing and he said I'd gotten maybe one phone call from Tommy or Nikki when I first checked
spk_0
him but that was it no one in the band called her visited after that they either weren't being
spk_0
supportive or were being told to keep their distance I was alone and they were probably moving on
spk_0
without me so Nikki was an intel on this happened he was in Martinique when he came back to America
spk_0
he's he came to Miami and a man at the airport ran up to him and was like Nikki Nikki your
spk_0
singer is dead and he was like what the fuck and he called Doc McGee and was like is Vince dead
spk_0
and Doc McGee's like no here's what happened it explains what happens and Nikki's like I took the
spk_0
next plane to Los Angeles and went to the shit shack I shared with Robin Crosby I called Michael
spk_0
Monroe and Andy McCoy from Hanoi Rocks and we all disappeared into a strange intense friendship
spk_0
bonded in death drugs and self-destruction Vince was on the news every day and I was so junct
spk_0
out I'd asked why is Vince on the news and someone would say that's for the manslaughter charge
spk_0
and I'd just say oh yeah and shoot up again Nikki is not on earth at this point obviously
spk_0
and I'm sure like this is just one more thing that makes him want to check out he said Vince was
spk_0
my bandmate my best friend my brother we had just finished the most successful tour that a young
spk_0
band could possibly have that early in its career we had experienced some of the best times
spk_0
together we had shared everything from my girlfriends to Tommy's wife to the room service groupies
spk_0
and I didn't call him I didn't visit him I didn't support him in any way whatsoever I was as usual
spk_0
only interested in indulging myself why wasn't I there for him what was the reason
spk_0
where the drugs that powerful when I thought about Vince it wasn't with pity it was with anger
spk_0
as if he was the bad guy and the rest of the band were innocent victims of his wrongdoing
spk_0
but we all did drugs and drove drunk it could have happened to any of us I thought that was like
spk_0
an incredibly generous and true and like valuable thing to say you know like I didn't see anyone
spk_0
else really say that and like it's completely 1 million percent true like while it did happen to
spk_0
Vince they were all behaving this way and it was just the luck of the draw that it happened to Vince
spk_0
and not telling the others absolutely and they all kept doing it which is that's the part where I
spk_0
started I was like this happened and you all kept doing the fuck shit like that like
spk_0
oh it's just and now it's a very before and after this moment you know it's very
spk_0
the rest of the rest of the the rest of the story is like everything after this moment the party is
spk_0
paradise is lost paradise is lost for sure I mean paradise kind of probably left the building when
spk_0
Nicky started doing heroin but also like this this is like the real nail nail in it I want to say that
spk_0
like again I know I'm keep big up in Nicky I just think this is so important because like he fine
spk_0
okay he said that it could have happened to any of us later right but also at the time
spk_0
1986 he did an interview with Kering magazine and he said the same thing he said the funny thing
spk_0
about the accident it's kind of ironic Tommy got in a really bad car accident 90 miles per hour
spk_0
rolled over nine times off the freeway he was fucked up really bad drunk I smashed a portion to
spk_0
a telephone pole and did this shit he shows his scar on the shoulder and I was really drunk
spk_0
and Vince he's going up the street and there's a wet spot with moss growing on the water and he's
spk_0
got a powerful car he's giving a bit of gas and the car hits it and someone dies and Vince
spk_0
was not as drunk as me or Tommy but no one dies in our cars hold on he's going 65 you know what
spk_0
he's not doing going into second gear he's going into fourth gear wasted let's say you're going
spk_0
35 up this hill you're going in third gear and then you're like hitting the brakes a little to
spk_0
go a little more responsibly around the curve then you would turn into second gear got it but he
spk_0
didn't you're not you're not in second gear at 65 that's for sure this part of the book is a bit like
spk_0
Jesus fucking Christ but you know what it's it's it's it's uh yeah because it's also like it's
spk_0
just bad because it just doesn't stop man I'm like the party's not over even if no one responds
spk_0
then he also says like you know what I love to drink I love to be fucked up but I'm not going to
spk_0
drive anymore I think we should tell our fans don't drink and drive not don't drink do whatever
spk_0
you want to do man shoot up heroin I don't care do it have fun it's your life but don't get in a
spk_0
car when you do it I think we do continue to drive around but you know good for you for trying to
spk_0
hold the hold the line in the press me all through all this Nikki still writing songs for the next
spk_0
album how I don't know in a row how you could be so productive junkie like that but oh yeah he's
spk_0
like immobile heroin addict writing the next album literally like reading animal farm my George
spk_0
Orwell and like writing songs and like nodding out I don't know but yeah then that the next year
spk_0
is when they start 1985 so all of that happened in I said December right and then they start
spk_0
making that album in January which is again really crazy because it's like this should happen
spk_0
a month ago like thens meal is like probably I think still in detox when they start going to the studio
spk_0
it's just like you could this is a this is another Motley crew through line they never take a break
spk_0
like this would have been an ideal time to like take six months off yeah but they don't they go
spk_0
straight into the studio to make theater a pain I know I have emerged as the world's foremost Nikki six
spk_0
fans but I'm just obsessed with them he said every time I came home in the studio I opened the door
spk_0
and there would be people everywhere in the front room of his house listening to music shooting up
spk_0
and fucking I'd walk past them because I didn't know who any of them were and collapsed into bed my
spk_0
room was littered with needles and books I was reading about the relationship between theater politics
spk_0
and culture from the olden days when entertainers who failed to make a king laugh would be put to death
spk_0
to newer ideas like Antonin Arno's essay the theater of cruelty Nikki six is getting home from the
spk_0
studio people are fucking in his living room he's brush gently brushing aside the used needles
spk_0
off his bed so he could page through Antonin Arno's essay about the theater of cruelty which is
spk_0
basically what he named this album after and it's also very hilarious that they were going to call
spk_0
it entertainment or death and Doug Thaler their manager tattooed that name on his arm and then a
spk_0
week later they were like sorry actually now it's theater of pain yeah theater of pain such a good name
spk_0
he stole the title he said either from the essay or a girl he dated a couple of times named
spk_0
Diana Cancer who was in the band 45 grave real heads know who 45 grave is for a crime game was
spk_0
like an OG sunset strip like punk e mentally rock ability band just a quick side barn Antonin
spk_0
Arno he was a French actor playwright and essayist it's part of the surrealist movement but he was
spk_0
actually kicked out by Andre Bertrand because he was too individualist and his whole thing was about
spk_0
that theater should be a primitive ceremonial experience intended to liberate the human subconscious
spk_0
and reveal man to himself it was about shock seeing the baseness in the world this is where
spk_0
our friend Niki six took his influences for the theater of cruelty well look at the cover
spk_0
it's a good cover yeah I mean it's it's a good cover I'm sorry I'm a sucker for the the masks of
spk_0
the theater of the laughing sad mask I mean is it super 80s and a bit cheese yeah I love it also
spk_0
because they're talking about themselves they're in a world of pain they're in a world of pain
spk_0
any but they have to entertain they're chasing pleasure born to entertain living in pain chasing the
spk_0
dragon all the powders all the all the babes people are dead yes RIP Razzle I'm gonna tell you
spk_0
something the vibe of making this album was very bad and niki said in the studio no one like the
spk_0
sounds they were getting out of their microphones based their guitars but we were too loaded to do
spk_0
anything about it I had only written about five songs and we recorded everyone then we had to
spk_0
plunder past demos just to scrape together a full album home sweet home was one of the first
spk_0
songs we put to tape and I'm correct mel in that home sweet home came from like Tommy playing
spk_0
around on the piano like a little piano riff yes so I interviewed Tommy Lee and niki six I think a
spk_0
year ago in LA amazing experience just a fun moment it was exactly a year ago I don't think I get
spk_0
that star struck that often I was I was like keep it together just keep keep the questions coming
spk_0
and like chill with the compliments and get out of here but anyway did Vince Neil say
spk_0
he was too busy I don't know Vince Neil was not part of the program that day and but I do remember
spk_0
niki telling me that it started with Tommy like tinkering on the thing and then it all came from
spk_0
that and I think it came fast and they just were really miserable and missed home because they've
spk_0
been on tour crushing you know arenas around the world and life sucks
spk_0
okay so basically they're in the studio they're fucked up they can barely get it together yeah he's
spk_0
niki said that too we were stranded in a lone and desperate and confused bag of bonds
spk_0
yearning for some sense of security but we recorded it so poorly and also basically Vince is like
spk_0
persona non grata at the studio at this point like they are very much like icing him due to the
spk_0
terrible misfortune that has been fallen prior to this yeah they don't know how to really they
spk_0
I think they all have guilt they all have survivors guilt and they don't really have the skills to
spk_0
heal together or separately you know so they're all sort of like breaking up and on there's
spk_0
splintering off to try to self-medicate self-heal find fun it's rough and Vince it's ironic because I
spk_0
think that the vocals on home sweet home well first of all this is a one this is a one song album
spk_0
home sweet home and his vocals are great on it and I feel like these are the vocals that Motley
spk_0
crew is most famous for as a vocals right and but he can barely keep it together in the studio
spk_0
here's the thing from what I understood from the press at the time this is seen as they're like
spk_0
shift towards glam metal and people kind of like pushed against us like okay this is what
spk_0
Kering said this is 1986 some say Motley cruise albums are progressively wimping out what do you say to
spk_0
them and Nikki said fuck you man what do you want us to do do like Ted Nuget and record cat scratch fever
spk_0
8000 times we played the piano on heavy metal cuts like knock them dead people say they don't hear it
spk_0
because they don't know it's there there's fucking grand piano all the way through it and fucking
spk_0
horns synthesizers harmonica's so we take a song like home sweet home we put a piano at the
spk_0
beginning of it and it's like oh they're not heavy metal anymore okay this is what I want to ask you
spk_0
about though then he goes but we were never heavy metal we were always like sleazy the difference
spk_0
as we could barely play in the beginning and now we become a pretty good band what do you think
spk_0
this means the distinction between we were never heavy metal we were actually sleazy because I
spk_0
feel like that sounds really on point I am not a historian of rock like you are but I like what
spk_0
they're saying here and I think that I agree I think that's kind of I mean they weren't heavy
spk_0
metal that first album is kind of punky with like a little few too many guitar solos to be total
spk_0
punk and then the sleaze thing is really makes sounds more apt than anything that heavy metal would
spk_0
apply heavy metal is Metallica and Slayer and Mega Eff and shit they're not doing any of that he
spk_0
says we've got some heavy metal like live wire but 10 seconds to love is just kind of trash you've
spk_0
got to do everything or it gets boring wait I feel like they said to me or the I read in the
spk_0
dirt but I forgot they really want oh they really wanted this to be like an arosmith song they
spk_0
wanted a lot of things is arosmith's sleaze arosmith is rock rock air smells really good I got to say
spk_0
those older out arosmith albums they fucking go yeah they're good the band hate this album Vince has
spk_0
referred to it as his least favorite crew album he said outside of home sweet home which MTV
spk_0
aired so much they had to establish an expiration date for new videos the rest of the album was
spk_0
pure shit every night when I ran around stage and my pink leather pants that list up the sides I
spk_0
felt like the only one sober enough to realize how bad some of these songs were I was shocked that
spk_0
the record went double platinum maybe it just reinforced the idea that we were so great that we
spk_0
could even get away with putting on a terrible album too big to fail they're too big to fail now
spk_0
even though this album is bad and has one song it goes double platinum they're so popular I do
spk_0
remember smoking in the boys room being on MTV all the time and was always like oh god you hated it
spk_0
the cover I didn't like it I actually think one thing when I was when I was re-listening to this
spk_0
album in advance of doing this podcast yassi I thought that the smoking in the boys room alternative
spk_0
guitar solo we discussed uh whatever like the alternative like that sounds I liked it much better yeah
spk_0
and I'm almost like oh it's a bummer that they weren't more garage I get it they don't want to be
spk_0
garage I just don't like the production the whole album is forgettable I agree but but
spk_0
home sweet home is an incredible anthem and it's one of my faves why are you too scared now to say
spk_0
what you said off mic where you said you changed your mind and this is actually your favorite
spk_0
mallie cruise home I'm not scared I do I will say at the end of the day home sweet home is my favorite
spk_0
beyond live wire a just fucking love home sweet home do you prefer this version or the dolly parton
spk_0
version that came out this year I am going to tell you that I prefer the original version yassi
spk_0
however we have to admit that the dolly parton version is pretty good it's pretty major that they
spk_0
got dolly parton to sing on it love and respect to everyone I mean even niki six call this album a
spk_0
pile of rubbish they blamed Tom warmin the producer who said it was that they said he didn't know
spk_0
how to produce them but then also it's like you guys were really fucked up and you had no song so
spk_0
like I'm not taking sides I'm just saying like like how much could he possibly do he did his best
spk_0
probably I'm not I'm not on team Tom warmin I'm just saying like it's likely both sides are
spk_0
correct but like it was a cursed album to be it's funny how I still can't really see this as a
spk_0
flop because they're really becoming bigger and bigger and that song was so big that they're still
spk_0
going up it's not a flop they're they're on their ascent when we're going to get into cog theory
spk_0
which I know I'm really excited about that's right but they have this has in the cog theory outlined
spk_0
in the dirt this definitely has thrown the cog up another whatever into the other part of the
spk_0
machinery cock here's a little confusing to be honest rolling stone said this about it
spk_0
punk seem to offer the kids an alternative in terms of grunge incompetence and snotty knows
spk_0
thumping attitudes this is not grunge because really that grunge hasn't happened yet it's just the
spk_0
word grunge yeah after all what was punk rock but a revved up morass of heavy metal chords
spk_0
but punk remains a cult taste what went wrong this is not a positive thing about heavy metal
spk_0
so the guy says heavy metal is boys music using the electric guitar as a desperate and obvious
spk_0
symbol of adolescent hormonal hysteria what do you think about that I agree and what's so wrong
spk_0
with that what's the problem the problem is that it's not a good album so like it's one thing when
spk_0
they're reading them saying the same kind of thing about the shout of the devil which which we like
spk_0
but then here I'm like no notes I don't think they would even disagree with this it's just like
spk_0
it's just not hitting for me yeah or them or anybody or anybody yeah except for sandy robberton from
spk_0
a sounds magazine in the UK who basically said this was better than shout of the devil which is
spk_0
looking at insane take that's a one song album it's a one song home and then karen was like this is
spk_0
worse than shout but it's basically good which is also lightly lightly incorrect thickness
spk_0
thickness okay now they go on the theater of pain tour Vince is really a pashoye niki said since
spk_0
Vince's accident the four of us had detached and started leading separate lives especially events
spk_0
when we went out on the theater of pain tour he was left on the outside for some reason we continue
spk_0
to see him as the bad guy and ostracize him he was in trouble but we weren't so if I caught him with
spk_0
beer after the show I chew about on one hand he deserved it because if he was caught the judge would
spk_0
crucify him in his trial but on the other hand there I was lecturing him about drinking a beer when
spk_0
I had a bottle of jacket my hands and a syringe in my right boot so while everyone was busy
spk_0
keeping Vince from drinking beer no one realized that I was progressively growing worse
spk_0
booo the cracks are showing honey this is so niki is just he goes without realizing it
spk_0
Tommy McIntyre a line and pushed Vince to the other side the longer we kept parting while
spk_0
enforcing sobri on him they'll thicker that line became until the earth beneath it cracked
spk_0
and Vince was left alone on a small sliver of rock separated from the rest of us by a chasm
spk_0
that all the pills girls and therapists in the world couldn't cross gorgeous yet truly
spk_0
such a words man Vince said I never really thought I was an alcoholic until I completed rehab
spk_0
successfully then I became an alcoholic before I just drank to have a good time but after the accident
spk_0
I drank to forget about what happened on the plane the guys would turn to me and ask as they
spk_0
chugged jack and coke Vince could you pass the plate of coke over here they'd smoke pot and blow
spk_0
it in my face they act like that the whole tour and then if I ever broke down and took a drink
spk_0
they chew me out and tell me I was hurting the band okay we haven't even talked about the plan
spk_0
should we just do a quick sidebar about how the Molly crew jet where they didn't they sorry am I
spk_0
am I correct they painted a black which at first they were told they were not allowed to do but then
spk_0
they just paid enough money that they could have a black private jet and they also painted a
spk_0
caucan balls on the side is this correct I believe so with a black leather interior yes the
spk_0
Molly crew jet so crazy they do have a second security guard that they hire for this tour who
spk_0
literally just walked around watching Vince to make sure he didn't drink and like knocking
spk_0
beers out of his hand and then Vince would fly home between legs of the tour to go to court and
spk_0
like meet with the DA and stuff and he said in order to avoid a trial the DA advised me to plead guilty
spk_0
or I think his lawyer advised him to plead guilty to vehicular manslaughter and strike a compromise
spk_0
he figured it's the people drinking at my house were mostly mostly in Molly crew in Hanoi rocks the
spk_0
party could be explained as a business meeting and we could pay damages to the families through the
spk_0
band's liability insurance because there was no way I could afford them on my own this is why the
spk_0
family has agreed to what everyone saw as such a light sentence 30 days in jail 2.6 million in
spk_0
restitution to them and 200 hours of community service in addition my lawyer told the DA I could
spk_0
do more lecturing in school and on the road than I could on my ass in prison where I wouldn't be a
spk_0
benefit to anyone could you see this happening now I don't think this would happen now like I don't
spk_0
think if a very public rock star pop star figure like it just seems so crazy the way that you could
spk_0
like do this and then they're like you get 30 days in jail the vehicular manslaughter killed somebody
spk_0
I think when there's a lot of money to be made in America now and then people find a way you know
spk_0
no I think you're right Nikki said the day of incidents was handed down I was at home with my
spk_0
girlfriend Nicole answered the phone with a needle in my arm we were scheduled to tour Europe with
spk_0
cheap trick in a couple of months and I had become so shut off to Vince that I didn't care how many
spk_0
years he was about to be sentenced as long as it didn't fuck up the tour because cheap trick had
spk_0
always been such a big influence and now they're going to be our opening act when I heard it was
spk_0
only 30 days my heart thawed and my eyes watered despite myself he was going to be okay and the band
spk_0
was going to continue unscathed even though we didn't really deserve to then I shot up and not
spk_0
it out so Nikki has become an absolutely gnarly junkie at this point yeah he is full on shooting
spk_0
heroin shooting cocaine he is an absolute full-time around the clock 24 seven drug addict he said
spk_0
I didn't even care about getting late anymore Vince could keep all the girls just leave me the drugs
spk_0
I had always thought age and success had allowed me to overcome the shyness and low self-esteem I had
spk_0
developed from constantly switching homes and schools as a kid but in reality I hadn't changed it all
spk_0
I had just drowned those feelings in heroin and alcohol as a human being I never really learned
spk_0
how to act or behave I only put myself in situations where I was the one running the show I wasn't
spk_0
interested in hanging out with other people in their environments where I had no control
spk_0
basically him and his girlfriend would just sit at their house and have around the clock parties
spk_0
with Izzy Stradlin Britt Ecklin porn stars he never left the house just never damn where is this
spk_0
house do you think I think it's in the valley oh my god nicky six at home google image search is really
spk_0
it's giving it is worth pointing out that nicky six is extremely wealthy and which we'll get
spk_0
into due to the fact that he was such a genius to re-attain the catalog the rights to his catalog
spk_0
pretty early on so good for him all right so nicky and Nicole are having around the clock parties
spk_0
at home Vince goes to jail for 19 days in torrents my hometown gets out for good behavior while he's in
spk_0
jail his wife Beth leaves him and takes their daughter and everything he owns like he comes home
spk_0
there's literally not one single thing in his home except this really expensive Rolex has managers
spk_0
had got him after he went to jail which is a like crazy thing to gift someone after that and his car
spk_0
Tommy said it wasn't the same anymore after Vince's accident something had changed sure we still
spk_0
partied went crazy got fucked up and stuck our dicks and anything but it wasn't the same
spk_0
partying led to addiction addiction led to paranoia and paranoia led to all sorts of stupid
spk_0
mistakes with huge repercussions even fucking wasn't the same fucking led to marriage marriage led
spk_0
to divorce divorce led to alimony alimony led to poverty it's all dramatic everything was different
spk_0
after the accident we became conscious of our own mortality as human beings and as it banned
spk_0
damn they're growing up before our very eyes this was very funny nicky was talking about like
spk_0
also how much they changed and he said a band strength is in the solidarity of its members when
spk_0
they split off into different worlds that's when the problems begin what was cool about us initially
spk_0
was that vince and Tommy were kids from kovina i was from Idaho and mick was from indiana we were all
spk_0
small town dysfunctional losers who somehow became rock stars we made our dreams into reality but we
spk_0
got so caught up that we forgot who we were Vince was trying to be Hugh heppner Tommy thought he
spk_0
was princess diana with his high class marriage and new friends it should be pointed out this is just
spk_0
around where i mean i'm gonna talk about it Tommy meets and marries Heather Locklear and i thought I
spk_0
was some kind of glamorous bohemian junkie like William burrows or Jim Carroll i guess mick always
spk_0
wanted to be Robert johnson or jimmy a Hendrix though he was drinking so much he was beginning to
spk_0
look more like me loaf i can see it now he was gaining some weight so yeah in 1985 Tommy meets Heather
spk_0
Locklear at the forum club after an ario speed wagon concert apparently the molly cruise accountant
spk_0
Chuck Shapiro was also ario speed wagons accountant but his brother doctor Shapiro was Heather Locklear's
spk_0
dentist so Tommy Lee had him call up his dentist brother to please and shoot you some to Heather
spk_0
which does seem like a thing that your dentist shouldn't do but i don't know what the rules were in
spk_0
1985 mel if somebody if some guy i thought you were like super hot and had an in with your dentist
spk_0
and asked your dentist for your information would you be okay with your dentist passing that
spk_0
information along it's very my dentist like my dentist my dentist would love that and also give me
spk_0
it would be easier to make an appointment so yes in my in my personal case that's very my personal
spk_0
dentist got it okay amazing so if you guys are trying to get it mel i feel like one avenue would be
spk_0
to figure out who his dentist is sorry what i mean by that is that my dentist is a dentist to the
spk_0
rich and famous who loves being a dentist to the rich and famous so maybe maybe that's literally
spk_0
still how it works i would also say i think it's a good idea to to go through someone's dentist yeah
spk_0
yeah yeah i think it could work you know what i mean like hey Heather if you think if you'd be
spk_0
interested he's interested in you and he's playing hollywood you know next week like maybe
spk_0
maybe we should get some tickets and some backstage passes you know what i'm saying one of my most
spk_0
enduring theories and math equations is that the scale of how creepy or uncomfortable weird
spk_0
a behavior is is relative to someone's attractiveness and fame if you're like really attractive and
spk_0
famous it's less creepy if you try to get at me through my dentist but if you're not then it's
spk_0
more creepy and i i don't make the rules that's just math i think you're right yeah i'm sorry
spk_0
it ends up it ends up okay so it's 1986 now top of February they do an interview with Kareng
spk_0
it's really crazy because once again niki is just flat out honest with everyone about the
spk_0
fact that all he does is drink and do drugs i mean says it in interviews like he tells Kareng
spk_0
now we can afford to buy pounds of this drug and pounds of that drug and fucking bottles and
spk_0
bottles of this and just sit in your house i have recordings to my house and i just sit there and
spk_0
get high and write music and whatever's inside of me comes out yeah not the best way to make great
spk_0
art right like that's that's when you're like you're really rich and you're really isolated right
spk_0
it just might not sound like albums one and two right you need input you need life experience i
spk_0
mean i think he has has life experience he's plumbing the inner depths of pain but it's not
spk_0
it needs a little more input i thought this is once again niki is just like so profound the interviewer
spk_0
was like you used to write molly kru songs from the street lying in your back in the gutter looking
spk_0
up now you got a right from the top looking down just like what you were saying and he said yeah
spk_0
but i still think i am in the gutter because once you've soiled what's inside of you you can never
spk_0
lose it that's why i have a hard time ever having a girlfriend because i'm a tramp it's pretty
spk_0
self-aware once once you've soiled what's inside of you you can never lose it but there's this like
spk_0
tracy jordan there's a tracy morgan thing on on 30 rock when he's tracy jordan and tracy's doing
spk_0
stand up but he can't like he has nothing to talk about except being rich and isolated yeah i
spk_0
always go back to that because it's like the material so off because tracy jordan only knows like
spk_0
being at home and being insanely rich and like quartet seats it's a classic thing especially with
spk_0
music and especially with rock music i mean it kind of ties into my thing about how most rock music
spk_0
that is really amazing is made by in earlier parts of career by younger people because there's
spk_0
just like so much more interesting material to write from and also so much less they go so over
spk_0
the top when they have anything at their disposal when they have limitations it comes out amazing
spk_0
sometimes it's funny to talk to like gays in their 60s that i know and really respect and think
spk_0
are so cool that they're like yeah i liked Madonna in 1982 and after that i was over it or one
spk_0
recently was saying to me when Madonna was Madonna it was really cool but by the time she started
spk_0
reinventing the wheel which is also when young melatonberg's life was changed like once she
spk_0
started reinventing the wheel because ever it caught up with her i wasn't as into it anymore when
spk_0
it was just like raw energy and style that she had just been that was like real and authentic i
spk_0
dug it once it was like arena tours and like combraza i didn't give a fuck and that you know
spk_0
that's that's rock and roll that's rock and roll not usually pop that's rock and roll they basically
spk_0
the guys like are you guys homophobes and he's like what what's that and the guys like that's
spk_0
people who are afraid of homosexuals because they fear their own homosexual tendencies and niki
spk_0
says hey man if that's what people want to do that's fine with me i don't really care what people do
spk_0
and the guys like well what about your feminine clothes and niki says hey man i like to look good
spk_0
i wear makeup shit president George Washington used to wear a wig and makeup i mean come on if he
spk_0
can do it i can do that's my boy i love him incredible i'm kind of perfect dancers okay so in may
spk_0
of 86 Heather and Tommy get married in Santa Barbara niki is the best man however he is a massive
spk_0
drug down mess and everybody is absolutely freaked out by how he looks like him and his girlfriend
spk_0
Nicole show up looking like just ghouls do you know what i mean like have not seen the sun
spk_0
have lost like 50 pounds um it's a bad vibe niki said Tommy is the brother i never had he has this
spk_0
energy and positivity i just haven't got i get off on that and i give him what maybe a darkness
spk_0
and edginess he doesn't have in which in some twisted way he admired it freaks me out that Tommy
spk_0
has never mentioned how fucked up i was at his wedding i love him from that that was from his diary
spk_0
Tommy said when niki showed up in my wedding he was transparent dude he wasn't white or even gray
spk_0
i thought i could see straight through him he looked fucking terrible he was doing everything in
spk_0
his power to pull it together and be a part of the day but i'll never forget how bad he looked he
spk_0
was drinking everything in sight try a state even but you could tell you just wanted to get away from
spk_0
everyone get high he had that look of panic in his eyes and then as soon as the wedding was over he
spk_0
was gone i never gave him a hard time for it but best man you sure fuck that one up the pictures are
spk_0
so good of the wedding i know it's amazing it really is like that's like fucking november ring you
spk_0
you know the day that niki comes home from Tommy's wedding this is actually one of my favorite
spk_0
parts of the molly crew lore there was a hand-delivered letter from our accountant Chuck Shapiro waiting
spk_0
for me in the mailbox you have been spending five thousand dollars a day five thousand times seven
spk_0
is thirty five thousand dollars a week per month that's a hundred and forty thousand dollars
spk_0
in exactly eleven months you will be completely broke if not dead that's what the letter said
spk_0
wow he really spelled it out he did not respond to Chuck Shapiro's handwritten very clearly
spk_0
you know spelled out letter they hired bob timmans to try and do an intervention famous
spk_0
sobriety coach to the rock stars he did get niki and Nicole to go to rehab however niki broke out
spk_0
and left Nicole did stay and get clean and so when she got out she basically couldn't obviously be
spk_0
with niki anymore because of their entire relationship was predicated on doing heroin so she left him
spk_0
and one day this is where we get to real melaton burgaurs one day niki is high in watching television
spk_0
with his live in personal assistant jesse james and saw a video for the song vanity six nasty girl
spk_0
and he thinks vanity is very hot so he calls she is so he calls his management office and he's like
spk_0
I want to meet vanity and they set them up and within a week he's on his way to her apartment
spk_0
in Beverly Hills for their first date guess what she's a junkie she's free-facing cocaine honey
spk_0
she is just as bad if not worse than him ready to party the hottest junkie babe in hollywood
spk_0
it turns out she what he like went to her house and she was like making like you know how like
spk_0
meth heads and like when she was in a meth head she was free-facing cocaine which is like a
spk_0
slightly different she was making like insane art you know like collage art like that was her thing
spk_0
yes bridged burlin in andi werehuls factory was like shooting speed and making books like that and
spk_0
that's good at and and and cool art and that's whatever reminded me about with vanity if
spk_0
vanity is if any if someone from the vanity estate here is this i'm definitely interested in in the
spk_0
world in purchasing and acquiring some of that work and also Warner brothers why don't you fucking
spk_0
stream vanity six it's fucking crazy give the people what they want the kids love vanity six
spk_0
vanity genius moutheys is passed away i've totally forgot but she she wasn't minister before she died
spk_0
yes she became a warning in christian and went by the name of some sort of minister anyways
spk_0
she she's heavily quoted in niki six's book about his diary that's why because she like she
spk_0
came she did an interview with him for it which is very nice she died of kidney failure of 57 in
spk_0
2016 all right pubionity is this not one of the most unlikely relationships that you could
spk_0
possibly think of i i actually totally see it because they're both super hot and they both have i
spk_0
see it i think it's great they're both super fucking good looking and they're both mega partiers
spk_0
with managers that connected them i see it i think shit like this is happening all the time you know
spk_0
i mean like hot person hot guy meets hot chick well it's really like drugs though because they
spk_0
absolutely had nothing in common and nothing to talk i mean this is princess x-go friend like you
spk_0
don't really go from prince to niki six it's not really i don't think living in the same universe
spk_0
of person i love vanity six i love vanity may she rest in peace
spk_0
now niki's dating vanity so he's both strong out on harrowin and freebeasing cocaine and it's time
spk_0
to make another album niki said i didn't want to be shooting up anymore and i put a lot of effort
spk_0
into trying to get straight but i couldn't help it when i decided to go on methadone to withdraw
spk_0
it only made matters worse and soon i was hooked on both harrowin and methadone
spk_0
this pattern is also vanity would like show but the studio and like embarrass him by like dancing all
spk_0
crazy which i thought it's kind of amusing he couldn't write any songs his grandfather keeps this is
spk_0
where it gets really dark his grandfather keeps calling and keep in mind like these people raised him
spk_0
right his grandfather and his grandmother grandfather keeps calling about how sick his grandmother is
spk_0
and like she's sick it's bad she's sick but he was just like too smacked out to ever like get it
spk_0
together to go back to visit and she died before he ever got to see her again no no and he also
spk_0
missed her funeral and the day after the funeral which he missed is when he wrote the song no no
spk_0
and resolved to clean up
spk_0
no no no no i'm out of my head without you
spk_0
however in december he has his first overdose in london his first ever harrowin overdose
spk_0
he lives now it's march of 187 they're trying to make girls girls girls around this time
spk_0
which gonna read you a couple of entries from nicky's diary from april and made just so we get a little
spk_0
temp check on what's going on with nicky's ex in 1987 today i check my answering machine
spk_0
i hadn't played it back in days steven tyler hit called asking if i was okay so weird this guy
spk_0
i idolized as a kid is looking out for me as if he's my dad which is more than my dad ever did
spk_0
i've left messages for Keith Richards asking if he wants to meet up and write songs together
spk_0
but he never calls back then in april van nys 5am i pushed the panic button again
spk_0
tonight it wasn't my fault every time i dared to peer out on my closet i could see faces of the
spk_0
window and i heard voices at the door it's probably 50 feet from the closet to the security box
spk_0
but it took me an hour of shaking to run there i felt like i had to run the length of a fobafield
spk_0
so nicky does harrowin in his closet he had a car harrowin closet and then he started having psychosis
spk_0
from doing so much drugs and he was imagining people coming to his house here's what dock mcgees said
spk_0
nicky was always seeing mexicans and midgets running around his backing house this is a quote we don't
spk_0
say that that word anymore his blow paranoia was totally out of control i would get calls from west
spk_0
tech saying he had set all his alarms off and was in the house refusing to answer the door or the
spk_0
police department would call me because nicky's neighbor had thrown them to report that nicky was
spk_0
crawling around in his garden the middle of the night with a shotgun this shit was going on at
spk_0
least twice a week so nicky is losing it babe nicky is imagining little people and latino men
spk_0
scaling the walls of his home to attack him he is crawling on the ground of his garden with a shotgun
spk_0
he is phoning the security company twice a week and then not letting him in the house he is
spk_0
absolutely lost his marbles yikes it's not good babe and then this was crazy mal this whole time
spk_0
tom zutot who has some do some do that zutot also signed guns and roses is trying to get nicky to
spk_0
produce appetite for destruction can you remind us why he wanted nicky to produce or or more
spk_0
importantly white guns and roses wanted him to produce well slash loved nicky they were good friends
spk_0
and also slash like we'll go up to him since those london days and molly crew is really successful
spk_0
and guns and roses is like baby band and tom zutot was like white we had so much success with
spk_0
molly and nicky's like main songwriter and like it would be a great cosine it would he thought it
spk_0
would make make sense and nicky said i went to see them play at the roxy but i think they were all
spk_0
that great the truth is i was so out of it that i had no idea who was any good and who was it
spk_0
this is another dire entry from april for reasons unknown to me i believe i am not meant to live
spk_0
much longer i am dying a slow unhappy death shrouded in confusion and questions i am confused as
spk_0
to how i've become the drugs and the drugs have become me we lived together in complete harmony
spk_0
what was once a question an inquisitive interest a curiosity even has finally answered itself
spk_0
it's a death wish i cannot will away like hemmingway said the only thing that could spoil a day was
spk_0
people i am the person who had spoiled my life i have lost track of all time here that's a
spk_0
diary entry from 1987 diary entry from 1987 wow how come every guy updated couldn't even string
spk_0
together one of those sentences sober as a fucking judge with like a zin and an asalsias in their
spk_0
system and nicky six is like barely keeping one i open and having absolute hallucinations and
spk_0
quoting hammingway it's a question to ponder yeah question to ponder something i need to look
spk_0
in the mirror myself all right may first nicky calls bob dimmins i need help yes however he refuses
spk_0
to do twelve step because he does not want to accept a power greater than himself so he tries to go
spk_0
cold turkey instead which he does for a little while but then he's upset that he's getting fat
spk_0
and he says is it worse to be fat or to be a junkie in his tire it's worse to be a donkey i'm
spk_0
just gonna go on the record and say that but he was questioning it now it's time to talk about
spk_0
girls girls girls which during this time is being made comes out may 15th 1987 this is also
spk_0
produced by tomormen i'm just gonna tell you guys the vibes of making this album are absolutely
spk_0
atrocious even worse than the last one they're all doing drugs they're not talking to each other
spk_0
tommy is in heatherland and has to hide his drugs from her vince is trying to say sober but failing at it
spk_0
mick was doing something behind everyone's backs but they didn't know what it was as nicky said and
spk_0
the months before we turn to the studio we're so busy fighting over our own demons that we
spk_0
completely forgot about mick when we saw him again it looked like someone had sewn his body onto
spk_0
the body of a simo and wrestler his arms and neck were so bloated we were he wouldn't be able
spk_0
to reach the frets so actually what was happening with mick was that he was dealing with chronic
spk_0
depression over that bone disease that i mentioned earlier that is still absolutely going on and he's
spk_0
in crazy pain and like can barely move and that's why he is self-medicating with tons of alcohol
spk_0
and getting fat but no he wouldn't tell anyone that's been out of them knew that and then also
spk_0
everyone is rich but mick is broke because he has i forgot to mention mick has like five kids or
spk_0
something like already like he started having kids very young and he has like all these alimones and
spk_0
and child supports today poor mick man that's more story like it's like a really rare it's a super
spk_0
rare disease and he has it harder than most people he has like a more severe case and everybody else
spk_0
to the point that he can barely move but then gets wasted and then rips on stage every night and
spk_0
they're also touring in a massive way yes he's said that a million times but like it
spk_0
really like all the fucking roads they're being like driven into the ground which will get into
spk_0
Doug Thaler set up the making of this album one side of nicky's control freak nature was that whenever
spk_0
Molly was in the studio he wanted to be there every single minute of the night and day but on
spk_0
girls girls girls he was a lot more removed from the process he often wasn't there at all and when
spk_0
he did come in he was in no shape to do anything he would just be making no sense that's when i
spk_0
started to realize how ill he was somehow this album sold four million copies and picked
spk_0
at number two in the billboard and went country will platinum and that somehow is the song girl's
spk_0
girls girls which is the number one strip club anthem of all time probably at this point
spk_0
would you agree i would agree i think this is a two song album yeah what did you have the song
spk_0
well now you have to guess because i'm what what are what are what are the songs that you think
spk_0
are relevant to this album i mean the only song that i like wrote that i like i feel this is good
spk_0
however the lyrics are absolutely mental and it's like the most it was different it was a different time
spk_0
hours is all the name of oh yeah all the name of will be the lyrics and i have a lot to talk about
spk_0
with your all i need but i'm not sure it's a good song so what i don't know i have no idea where
spk_0
you're going it can't be dancing on glass is it dancing on glass this is this is camp me this is
spk_0
maybe not quality but i was gonna say the two songs to me are wildside and girls girls girls
spk_0
wildside is the second best song after girls girls girls what's the one that's like talking about
spk_0
like the 15 year old they really wants to fuck is that all in the name of that's all in the name of
spk_0
she's only 15 she's the reason the reason i can't sleep you say illegal i say legal's never been
spk_0
my scene yeah these are insanely rx yeah again real it was different it was a different time hours
spk_0
in all in the name of says to me daddy can i have some candy want to be your nasty anytime you want
spk_0
you know you can have me all the name of rock and roll i i don't i'm not not the words of melaton
spk_0
bird not the words of the lot of right not the words of yossi so like likely not the words of
spk_0
niki six given that he was not even having sex with anybody at the time like i said he was
spk_0
crawling around commando army style in his backyard trying to shoot imaginary people
spk_0
not having sex with anyone but regardless it did make it onto album and no one said one
spk_0
single word about it girls girls girls it's not my favorite song no no tomi said we never really
spk_0
thought it would become so popular but anywhere you go in the world walk him to a strip joint
spk_0
nine times i'd ten you'll hear this song that is something i'm so proud of having done it brings
spk_0
tears to my eyes you go to a motley show these days and there will be kids some as young as five
spk_0
years old who just holler out the lyrics when we play it i'm really glad that there's five year old
spk_0
just screaming out about the dollhouse in fort lauderdale
spk_0
and
spk_0
raising hail at the seven fail
spk_0
i really can't get over how Vince says motor sickle for some reason
spk_0
fratana and Anita fat and that motor sickle and switchblade knife wide is a motor sickle
spk_0
switchblade knife this is a massive song do you think i have strip clips fallen off
spk_0
yeah like when you go to jumbo's clown room they give you like a giant wad of dollars because
spk_0
otherwise no one's gonna get a tip like you know what i'm saying like you know what i mean
spk_0
yeah i just and jumbo's clown room was one of the last remaining kind of cool ones but like
spk_0
it feels like it was like extremely 80s and then like a bit 90s and then there's like
spk_0
people just don't be going to the strip club as much as they used to
spk_0
i just it's so funny talking about these songs because i still i really do have a clear memory
spk_0
of being like 10 being like oh god this video again like give me a break but now i'm like
spk_0
love it i love it for cheap thrills it's not a great song but it is extremely 1987 and it's
spk_0
extremely motley crew and it's extremely probably nicky six phoning it in from heroin land and
spk_0
it went fucking crazy it went hard you can probably still hear it anytime you go into any strip
spk_0
dancing on glass which i don't think is a good song i do like the riff in it and it is nicky's
spk_0
anti heroin song as he's trying to get he's he's he's he's taking a stand about that heroin is bad
spk_0
yeah
spk_0
bad boy boogie which again a bit of a forgettable song does once again have an aero smith
spk_0
reference and also the kind of an insane lyric which is the aero smith reference
spk_0
i got my finger in the pie my hand in the cookie darts just a lick and a promise in the back seat of
spk_0
my car yeah looking a promise is the 1976 aero smith song
spk_0
i love no no okay i take it back my my favorite song on here is no no it's one minute
spk_0
and i don't know 11 seconds or something long one minute 26 and it's just this tender little
spk_0
dirge about nicky having nightmares about his grandmother's sickness and funeral because he couldn't
spk_0
be there for her and it's one of the things he regrets most in his life i got it i want to talk
spk_0
about your all i need that's like they're like valid my thought here is like the boys are slipping
spk_0
and this is not i don't like it why are we talking about this because i want to tell you it actually
spk_0
has a very fun and hilarious backstory okay because you think it's just this cheesy balance it
spk_0
totally is however Tommy was like this is one of the great tragic love songs which is not bon joe
spk_0
he called it the best moniker's song ever written absolutely wrong however here's what it is
spk_0
nicky wrote this song back during the theater of paint or when he was sure that his girlfriend
spk_0
that his ex girlfriend Nicole had cheated on him with the actor jack wagner who was then on general
spk_0
hospital who you might remember now jack wagner had had a hit song on the charts with a song called
spk_0
you're all i need hilariously by the way written by Glenn ballard we're not even getting to the heart
spk_0
nicky said he wanted to get revenge so this was his like fuck you to Nicole was putting this he
spk_0
literally wrote this whole song as a fuck you to Nicole because he thought she had cheated on him
spk_0
with jack wagner who also had a song called you're all i need that's kind of cool it's not it doesn't
spk_0
warrant the song because bad but i did like that backstory he also apparently hired some bikers to
spk_0
break jack wagner's kneecaps and then later Nicole called him and she was furious because by some
spk_0
bizarre coincidence the bikers had not gone to break jack wagner's kneecaps but jack wagner had fallen
spk_0
over during filming and broken his knees anyways on the soundstage nicky is a powerful witch
spk_0
that's all i just wanted to bring that i thought that was funny we built this city on rock and roll
spk_0
we built this city on spite and anger right all right like you said they're unstoppable
spk_0
they're too big to fail doesn't matter the album is bad no one cares there are there are there
spk_0
i mean the cog has been thrown up one you know there's a really insane piece in the august rolling
spk_0
stone about the girls girls girls tour which is i think arguably the peak of molly crew debauchery
spk_0
like they're out of their fucking minds they're doing the crazy shit they're so famous they're so rich
spk_0
they just have chicks at every show just like ready to go are they sober right now no they're
spk_0
absolutely not sober no one's sober everyone's crazy there's a part in the rolling stone thing where
spk_0
a kid cut like the journalist as a kid comes up to Vince Neill and says will you sign an autograph
spk_0
for my friend Daniel and Vince says sure how do you spell Daniel yeah how do you spell Daniel i'd love
spk_0
to read this article how do you spell Daniel also did it's truly amazing niki six also shits on
spk_0
youtube and this he said i don't understand you to his music it's too serious they bum me out
spk_0
i think music's gonna escape i'm not a parent i don't want to tell kids what to do this article also
spk_0
says that vanity tells the journalist that her and niki six are engaged yes which apparently they
spk_0
were old and niki says they weren't but i think they actually works i think she asked him to get married
spk_0
and he said yes because he was like fucked up and then he was like i don't want to get married
spk_0
they took guns and roses on part of this girls girls girls tour niki and his diary back then
spk_0
said i want to help slash out and give his bands some shows they're not worth any tickets but i
spk_0
believe in them cool new bands the singer can be an asshole but what's new i can see him in Vince
spk_0
bumping heads i love that they this actually was a huge deal by the way like taking guns and roses
spk_0
on this tour in a sliding doors scenario they hadn't done this it's totally possible we wouldn't have had
spk_0
the guns and roses we have now because according to tom zooja who was their an r he said that
spk_0
gathin was about to pull support for the apatite for description album and it had sold like a little
spk_0
bit less than 200,000 copies but that motley tour tipped the scales for the band and so then gathin
spk_0
put more support behind it and then it took off and ended up selling more than 20 million copies
spk_0
it's incredible yeah because apatite for destruction came out a long time before sweet child
spk_0
of the mind became exactly did gigantic one of the biggest songs of the 80s totally and i think
spk_0
this motley crew tour arguably you could say like had a huge hand to play in that putting them
spk_0
in front of these audiences and having gathin won't put money behind them this is also the tour
spk_0
where they stop where i make up also just like a moment of silence for the moment in that diary where
spk_0
he's like we're gonna take these guys on tour because they're cool it's like nothing that anyone
spk_0
really wants to see but like slash and he's my and he's my friend and by the way i'm not saying
spk_0
that snidely i'm like wow that's that happened you know what i mean yeah there wasn't some fucking
spk_0
print like a manager's breathing down your neck being like you up well they did then they
spk_0
made them take white snake which nicky hated white snake and talked at every turn as you could have
spk_0
a cheap fucking hate white snake and they're corny and they suck so there's a little column a little
spk_0
column b slash is also a pretty gnarly hero and added to this point so that's going on
spk_0
they're insane okay they're literally insane here's a here's one little brief from that
spk_0
Rolling Stone thing no one in motley crew is wearing underpants so before sliding into his leather
spk_0
stage pants for a photo shoot nicky six wipes his ass with a towel which he then tosses at his band
spk_0
mates who flee in all directions the band members take turns pumping a 20 pound barbell before
spk_0
doing a bare armed pose six who has been working out regularly throws a mini tantrum when he sees
spk_0
how chubby his arm photographs and the polaroids love it and also guys look at google these shoots i
spk_0
mean they're just i know they're so good so good from nicky's diary on the store doc told me that we
spk_0
all had our dicks out on the bar and poured jack on them and let them on fire what the fuck i have no
spk_0
pubes they were being insane nicky and Tommy at some point cut docs bed in half with a knife so when
spk_0
he got in it collapsed like they were just like psycho it's kind of amazing here's what this is
spk_0
actually you're gonna love this this is what Fred Saunders said Fred Saunders was the head of
spk_0
tour security for Molly crew ever since shot at the double when dog McGee first hired me he said
spk_0
the band was so wild i should do whatever it took to keep them in line in fact he said he'd give me a
spk_0
bonus every time i hit them i hit motley a lot i once broke Tommy's nose in indiana i broke nicky's
spk_0
ribs and i beat the shit out of Vince many times well because he's an asshole i think i even hit
spk_0
poor mcwans that was just to complete the set by all accounts even though nicky is the most
spk_0
gnarly drug addict the most annoying person on the tour to everyone was Vince so one time he had a
spk_0
fit backstage because there was only gray pupon mustard and not regular mustard for his sandwich
spk_0
and he threw the jar against the wall and it exploded but it flew back at him and the glass cut
spk_0
his hand opened very badly and he had to go to the hospital and they had to delay the show
spk_0
and then the rest of the tour he had to wear a glove i love gray poop on me too Vince already like
spk_0
10 points negative for you don't even you don't like gray pupon he was driving them crazy as
spk_0
as nicky as nicky said Vince is a drama queen and that wears you down little episode by episode
spk_0
temperate and drums yeah this is also really fun so they had walkie codes for everyone did you
spk_0
do you come across this in your i did not i did not okay so here they are number one doc me
spk_0
to Doug Taylor three rich visher four Fred that is for you five Vince six obviously nicky seven
spk_0
mick double zero Tommy 20 where are you a hundred krill do you know what krill means in the world of
spk_0
no means cocaine oh it's some it's some star wars tournament i'm really sorry for the people at home
spk_0
that i don't know dick about star wars and i didn't retain the and i retain the information
spk_0
101 hotel 129 gig 268 tour bus 714 groupie 747 pig with lipstick
spk_0
nicky is in really bad jb guys nicky is non doing well he said i used to look at the tour dates
spk_0
and think when is this gonna end and when it does do i have to go home i resented that management
spk_0
put us on the road and just left us there Tommy and Vince were both married it must have been hard
spk_0
for them to keep things together i was different i felt detached from everything we knew we needed a
spk_0
break or something was going to break we asked for time off and doc always said no here's what doc
spk_0
said back and i want to ask you about it i always had a real problem with nicky's line of argument
spk_0
sure the tours were too long for them but only because of the way they behaved on them don't forget
spk_0
these were guys in their 20s who were only being asked to work two hours a day what about all the
spk_0
guys who get up at 5 a.m. to lay bricks and only get two weeks off a year if molly crew were burned
spk_0
out on the road it was purely because they were stupid fucking drug addicts it's not rocket science
spk_0
i think that the road is crazy i agree it does it the two hour working two hours a day i think
spk_0
doesn't stand because if you've ever been on tour you know that that's not how it feels and that's
spk_0
not that it really wears you down but he's also right that they're insane yeah i mean like there
spk_0
are money machine because they go on stage and give it they're all two hours a day in a way that's
spk_0
like really incredible and so it seems from like watching videos and stuff and the crowd's going
spk_0
crazy and blah blah blah blah and they're doing that all around the world but they're definitely
spk_0
burning the candle both ends it's not the right metaphor here it's just like
spk_0
burning the candle burning the dicks at both ends is really what they're doing with jack all
spk_0
over them and losing their pubes i think they're both right because like what are they doing at home
spk_0
like just you know free base they're they're just they're just they're stuck with themselves here
spk_0
and they're just like in uh they're on the cog babe they're on the cog but they're also being
spk_0
about to be chewed up and spit out by this world yeah to your point like you what do you want
spk_0
you want time off to do what free base cocaine at home you know somehow during all of this
spk_0
Nikki is writing in his diary about reading jack carawak and George Orwell's animal farm and I just
spk_0
can't get over i'm sure there was lots of junky bookworms right i mean William burrows he invented
spk_0
junky bookworm author but like you just don't hear so much about that anymore we love you Nikki
spk_0
i'm sorry that i said that before i'm i'm on team them i got i got to correct myself if they're
spk_0
burned out on the road they're burned out on the road i believe reading all the stuff i've
spk_0
read about them that they were pushed too hard i agree i agree to toward too long they are also like
spk_0
deeply damaged people who are all going through are in really precarious places mentally and with
spk_0
their addictions and stuff and everyone's just watching it happen because we're making tons of money
spk_0
on these guys that's just come on like that's just real are they assholes they're that are making
spk_0
it hard on themselves yes that's also very true totally and even Doug failure pointed out like
spk_0
i could see how mess how much of a mess they were and it's like at that point you kind of got to
spk_0
like it's also just not good business like long you got to protect your long-term investment
spk_0
yeah it's getting so it's getting really dark Nikki said after six months of touring girls my
spk_0
existence had disintegrated to the point where every waking moment was about drugs i went on stage
spk_0
to get drugs i came off stage to find more drugs i used my per diem to buy drugs and i traveled to
spk_0
each city only to see if anyone had drugs niki and tommy started making crack in the backstage
spk_0
microwaves so doc magi said so just if it sounds like doc magi is really mean about them just
spk_0
given mine that they fired doc magi at one point so this is all past this is all after he was fired
spk_0
now niki king of the losers had begun to unravel on the girls tour neither Doug nor i wanted to be
spk_0
around him so we drew straws to see who would accompany the band to japan i drew the short one
spk_0
mr udo the promoter there is one of my best friends every time he takes the band to japan he puts
spk_0
his reputation on the line for them and it was no different from motley crew except that motley crew
spk_0
couldn't give a fuck they are savages with cash who care nothing about nobody even each other
spk_0
well they do do some fuck shit in japan they also really sad diary entry from niki on his birthday
spk_0
is number 11 where he says he just he wakes up at home and realizes his birthday and there's no
spk_0
messages on his machine and no one did the sent him a card or a president or called or anything
spk_0
so crazy okay so in japan they kick it off tommy gets caught with pot in his drum kit
spk_0
they have to mr udo has to get them out of that then they're taking the bullet train to osaka and
spk_0
they're like full gear and they get wasted and terrorize the entire train car and niki throws a
spk_0
bottle of jack daniel's and hits a japanese businessman in the skull not good no he does go to jail
spk_0
for that as well and mr udo once again has to bail him out from getting arrested
spk_0
this is also a tour where he calls to the hotel and complains about the fans that are banging on
spk_0
his window in the middle of the night except that he was on the 26th floor yeah the tour finally ends in
spk_0
japan everyone goes home but niki's like i'm not going home i want to go to the rest of asia
spk_0
and do drugs presumably mr udo and docker like what we can't let him go on is insane so they have to
spk_0
go with him and he like is so insane there like makes them go to like a prostitute brothel thing and
spk_0
shoot was like bro i'm married like they finally just leave him alone with a translator in Hong Kong
spk_0
Tommy said actually thought deciding to go to hong kong was niki's one of niki's more sober moments
spk_0
he told me he wanted to buy some furniture for his home he seemed really sincere about wanting to
spk_0
go to hong kong and get amazing deals on furniture wow Tommy was just like what he wanted to buy
spk_0
beautiful furniture for his well then said when niki announced he wasn't coming back to la but
spk_0
going to hong kong i couldn't have cared less i didn't give it a second thought just said fine
spk_0
have a nice time bye we weren't close in any way and i wanted to keep my distance from him because he
spk_0
was fucking bad news so niki is in hong kong i want to point out that he hasn't showered the entire
spk_0
japan tour which i presume was at least two weeks so it's been minimum two weeks that he hasn't
spk_0
showered he comes across a suzer on the street and he asks his translator to have this suzer read
spk_0
his fortune and apparently what the psychic said was you're gonna die before the end of the year
spk_0
you don't change your ways but you were unable to change your ways now this is December 22nd so
spk_0
the end of the year is in like you know 10 days well December 23rd what happens he od's he dies
spk_0
yeah he literally od's and dies so what had happened was what happened was he came home
spk_0
goes out picks up slash slash his girlfriend Sally Steven Adler and their friend Robin and they
spk_0
go to the cat house shout out Ricky Rackman they do a bunch of cocaine drink a bunch of booze take a
spk_0
bunch of pills then they're like let's go to slash's hotel room and do heroin niki let's slash's
spk_0
dealer shoot him up and he immediately overdoses slash said i can't remember too much about it
spk_0
and he asked me at the cat house by knew where he could get dope a friend of mine had just become a
spk_0
junkie so we called him i was so screaming drunk that i couldn't even find the floor to fall on
spk_0
thank god for Sally dude Sally listen if Sally haven't been there i think niki might have been dead
spk_0
so Sally said guns had two sweets slash was in one and Steven Adler was in the other with niki and
spk_0
the dealer the dealer came into our room and yelled niki's dead and ran off he literally jumped out
spk_0
the window and over the balcony and ran off down the street slash was paralytic and niki was
spk_0
turning blue Steven helped me drag niki into the bathroom and then he ran off so i was on my own
spk_0
i tried to get niki into the shower to pour water on him then slash came in saw niki and started
spk_0
freaking out slash had a friend named Todd who had died of a heroin overdose a few months earlier
spk_0
so he starts yelling Todd and smashing up the bathroom by now i was giving niki malto
spk_0
mouth for cessitation over the bath while trying to hold slash back with one hand slash smashed
spk_0
the shower screen and the glass shawared down on me and niki so i got up and i punched slash and
spk_0
i laid him out yes Sally bitch fucking do it i was screaming for someone to call 911 which they
spk_0
did and they said niki six is dead i later found out that niki's limo driver heard that and
spk_0
phoned vince neal so the limo driver calls vince neal as like niki's dead and vince said
spk_0
it brought him to tears and he never used to cry then anyway Sally keeps giving niki
spk_0
the mouth to mouth of the paramedics get there and they're like basically kept him going although
spk_0
he's declared clinically dead on the way to the hospital however and this is drunk ties in the
spk_0
movie as well the paramedic is a motley crew fan and he's like absolutely the fuck not is niki six
spk_0
dying in my fucking ambulance i love motley crew let's fucking go we gotta get this man back
spk_0
and gives him two shots of adrenaline and niki's back damn i know this is crazy yeah the media
spk_0
starts reporting that he's dead the suit sayer the suit sayer knew what's up babe this should
spk_0
is real you know you know i'm a believer niki woke up in the hospital and then he leaves he's like
spk_0
i'm not staying here rips out the nurse that he just ripped out the tubes of from his nose and
spk_0
walked out of the hospital wearing just leather pants shirtless and there's two crying fans
spk_0
outside the hospital thought he was dead and he's like hey they're like oh my fucking god you're
spk_0
not dead he's like no can i have a red home and then he goes and they're like toyota sell a girl
spk_0
or whatever and they drive him home and he immediately shoots up again wow also changes the answering
spk_0
machine to say niki six isn't home because he's dead wow it's kind of funny very very Christmas
spk_0
married Christmas it's just a bunch of it's Christmas Eve i guess like then niki finally decides like
spk_0
okay i'm done i'm not doing this like he finds he starts throwing everything away he finds the AA
spk_0
book that bob timmins it got in him under his bed wise throwing well his drugs and is like okay i'm
spk_0
actually gonna do this diary from christmas says good morning and merry christmas i've decided to put
spk_0
this diary away and start a new one with a new day upon us i feel hopeful life i think has somehow
spk_0
taken a turn for the better i don't know how i survived the last year but i know there has to be a
spk_0
reason today for the first time ever i don't care about the outcome or the wise or when i
spk_0
just want to live i woke up happy i still can't believe it i want to live and i don't know why
spk_0
merry christmas so slashen sally come over to niki's for christmas in a limo and give each other presents
spk_0
and then he stays at doc mcgees house for a week sobers up i guess and doc mcgees was like we called
spk_0
in the rest of the band and held a big meeting in my living room they looked pathetic there was niki
spk_0
who was dying tomi who was getting loaded and fighting with his wife vince who was completely out of
spk_0
control and mick who basically woke up every morning and drank alcohol and sobbed to himself until
spk_0
they passed out and this was supposed to be one of the biggest greatest bands in the world
spk_0
dug and i told them first that they were gonna pay back the promoters in europe because they
spk_0
have canceled the european leg of their tour second they were either gonna straighten up or find
spk_0
new management we presented a united front and he admitted that he needed to check into a hospital
spk_0
something he had never agreed to before tomi who so easily led he drink coolate of jim jones
spk_0
asked him to said he was in of course vince stubborn and denial dragged his heels and waffles and
spk_0
mick just gave us a funny look so basically they all agree that they will all go to rehab in order
spk_0
to keep the band going and in 1988 they all go to rehab tomi says they all stood in a circle with
spk_0
their arms around each other i'm singing you can't always get what you want and tomi cried
spk_0
and this is before they all go separately right they all go separately first and then they come
spk_0
together oh wow tommi said i turned to niki and sob isn't this the most beautiful song dude and he
spk_0
looked at me like i was crazy and then he looked at mick and whispered something about me falling
spk_0
for this jim jones shit i don't think anyone in the band ever took me seriously i was seen as the
spk_0
puppy dog whose paws were too big and always tripped over everything tell me i such like a pure heart
spk_0
right like what a the sweetie pants he really was like i love this song and i feel really connected to
spk_0
you guys and everyone was mean to him about it we love tommi we love tommi mick was basically like i
spk_0
don't think rehab did any good like my father taught me when you're a child be a child when you're a man
spk_0
be a man i got so sick of seeing everyone the band bawling their eyes out go back to the second
spk_0
grade if you want to cry suck ass beautiful so niki gets put on proza and then he asks ricky
spk_0
rachman to put him on a blind date because he like doesn't know how to talk to girls anymore and
spk_0
ricky rachman sets him up with playboy miss october brandy brand and the first night she sleeps over
spk_0
brandy gets a call from her mom about a guy named niki she had met a while ago and had fun with
spk_0
and should she call him her mom had a decision to be a backup singer on the girls girls girls tour
spk_0
and had hooked up with niki and just to put some respect on bryhaward's name bryhaward was the lead singer
spk_0
of the iconic ahead of their time all female band fan he just applied i thought that was very cool
spk_0
this is the mom this is the mom but he ends up marrying the daughter brandy brand we don't have time
spk_0
to fully get into but i just thought you would enjoy the mention of vince's feud with isy stragglin
spk_0
and oxwell that starts around this time all we know from that story i think i do you think that vince
spk_0
is the tough guy here vince is the winner i think vince is in the wrong because he basically like
spk_0
grabbed isy stragglin's wife sherees is breast at the cat house and then she told him to fuck off
spk_0
any kicker in the stomach allegedly and she was pregnant so whatever netted out he's the asshole
spk_0
definitely and he also sucker punched isy at the v ma's because isy was talking shit i don't know
spk_0
but then axel kind of i don't know when you see these interviews have been like on mtv talking
spk_0
shit he just looks like such a fucking hot mess that you're like an axel looks so good so if
spk_0
we're judging on those standards i think axel one we're talking about 1988 88 this kind of stretches
spk_0
into 89 they just like talk to each other in the press yeah i mean like it's just don't don't
spk_0
let me even talk about stuff like this because then i'm gonna feel bad about what i got to say
spk_0
because 1989 x melatonberg xg and r is like totally that's the is is is the promised land you
spk_0
guys do yourselves a favor though look up 1988 89 acleros because he looks like he was cut from marble
spk_0
he is one of the most beautiful people you'll ever lay eyes on the voice and the style that he stole
spk_0
100% from our friend from the cult but we don't get into that all right in 89 motley plays
spk_0
this thing called the Moscow music piece festival it's a two day rock festival in Moscow put on by
spk_0
doc magi who also by the way was managing mon jovy and it had Von jovy the scorpions and azi
spk_0
apparently doc magi did not inform molly crew that it was really more of a big bon jovy headlining
spk_0
show or this is what molly said and was mad about and they're so fucking pissed that they fire
spk_0
and after that they're like we're done with you they also beefed with john bon jovy at it there's
spk_0
like a whole thing where tommy said he punched john bon jovy john bon jovy said he punched tommy
spk_0
and then nicky was like oh you really think john bon jovy could kick anyone in molly crews ass
spk_0
this is like a fun little feud with john bon jovy and then they put out doctor feel good babe this
spk_0
is the big cog right juggory this is the big cog this is the cog that few people ever hit
spk_0
do you want to talk about the cog there at all i mean it's pretty simple first of all i don't
spk_0
even know if molly crew really wrote this to no i don't know i think the else dross wrote that
spk_0
yeah but what what it's just interesting about is like you know few people
spk_0
get this close to the sun few musical artists ever make it as far as molly crew did with the doctor
spk_0
feel good album it's like it's like Whitney Houston it's gone some roses it's Madonna a couple of times
spk_0
it's Michael Jackson it's Nirvana like it's Britney Spears yeah yeah totally you know the list is
spk_0
not getting much bigger you know it's like it's few few people ever hit this hard and what they're
spk_0
really saying in the book is like if you get this hard and when you get there it shreds your your
spk_0
flesh and bone until you are basically not a person anymore it's likely that it will spit you out
spk_0
in the most like fucked up way i liked it too because it was it's an interesting jugg's position to
spk_0
the imperial phase theory from Neil Tennant which is like every artist has their imperial phase where
spk_0
they're like at the height of their powers because the implication of the imperial phase is it's
spk_0
just one time the cog theory does pause it which you just said like with Madonna is a good example
spk_0
some people get back to the big cog more than once it's extremely rare but it does happen or as
spk_0
imperial phase kind of implies that you would only have it once but i do people do hit the peak more
spk_0
than once again that's really rare if i dare like i think you could probably count on both hands
spk_0
artists that have hit the big cog more than once but it does happen anyways let's talk about doctor
spk_0
feel good it's now we've we've gotten rid of Tom Warman Bob rock the most non-minitive
spk_0
determinism person on earth the person whose name determined their fate and career to produce
spk_0
rock albums the man's name is literally Bob rock Robert rock is this man's name i can't get over it
spk_0
that's his real name i think so wow if it's not i don't want to know about it i don't want to know
spk_0
anything about it yeah it says he was birth name Robert Jen's rock that's his fucking name babe
spk_0
this is a big album it's a huge album okay when you say big album are you do you mean like it has
spk_0
really great songs on it i mean that like these are big hits their last two albums have like one or
spk_0
two songs on it that we're really gas to talk about and that's it this one just has a lot of
spk_0
songs in popular culture that are very very big doctor feel good kickstart my heart is gigantic
spk_0
without you is huge and i like it i like it i'm down with it actually and you talk with it
spk_0
same old situation is a big song yeah about about uh chicks living you for chicks
spk_0
oh damn you listen i think you could make the argument that this is the second best
spk_0
Molly girl yeah certainly to date of like up to 1989 this is the second best yeah
spk_0
because obviously we love the first one the most but and it's very interesting because this was made
spk_0
in sobriety they're sober not just sober they're jogging they're not eating meat they're not having
spk_0
cough caffeine they're not like they're like full like health notes they're taking supplements
spk_0
and they're big they're popular they're making more money than ever they hit they hit this is
spk_0
their first album to hit number one on the billboard 200 and they got Bob rock oh i think did do an
spk_0
amazing job because he had done the cult of foreman gend and ted new jend and the difference was the
spk_0
here's what niki said where tom warman just said okay that's good enough bob whipped us like galley
spk_0
slaves his line was this just isn't your best nothing was good enough bob was critical demanding
spk_0
and a stickler for punctuality six months of rigor combined with six months of sobriety toward
spk_0
the life out of us in eight years together with millions of album sold we had never recorded
spk_0
properly no one had ever pushed us to the limits of our abilities before or kept demanding more
spk_0
than we thought we could get until we discovered we actually did have more to give we just never tried
spk_0
before let's fucking go Lars Ulrich liked this so much that he hired Bob rock to produce a little
spk_0
album that you might remember called the black album crazy no big deal um niki and tom your best
spk_0
ebf necklace is exchanged tomi is like really creative and like really wanting to like
spk_0
contribute musically in the songwriting process according to niki they're taking in new inputs
spk_0
he said we now had the patience to listen to bands besides the sweet slayed t-rex arrows
spk_0
with the new york dolls i opened my mind to everything from miles davis to wittany houston and i
spk_0
became aware of a whole universe of sound and emotion intricate melodies baselines and rhythms
spk_0
that i had missed out on all my life gorge goodful the opening track tnt terror and tensil town
spk_0
is a sample of a woman saying dr davis telephone please that same sample was used by queens rike
spk_0
in their song the eyes of a stranger one year prior just a fun fact pretty guys thank you
spk_0
i'm gonna use the top to say it until we go to the next one
spk_0
my favorite part in dr feel good the song is when vince goes guitar
spk_0
guitar it's so good
spk_0
it's just like what time is it cyber guitar oh yeah i love it i love it it's just like why
spk_0
why why was right then the time to say guitar but it was dr feel good as molly cruise highest
spk_0
ranking single two date he picks at number six on the hot 100 it's about a drug dealer just in case
spk_0
you guys didn't know who dr feel good was he's a drug dealer he makes you feel good he's the only
spk_0
one they call feel good yassi this is the only one they call it dr feel good guitar
spk_0
yeah
spk_0
kickstart my heart is also a big hit right kickstart my heart is a huge hit it is about
spk_0
niki's dying and overdosing oh wow which is a great way to mine i mean literally it's about the
spk_0
bringing him back with the adrenaline it's so great it's so wonderful he took lemons and made
spk_0
lemonade honey he said i overdosed on heroin and died and i wrote kickstart my heart for you guys
spk_0
on some days it's it's beautiful for my Beatles head slice of your pie the ending is based on
spk_0
the Beatles song she's so heavy
spk_0
rattlesnake shake not a bad not a bad song i'll say it it's not bad i just love without you
spk_0
i love it i love it i love it i love it i love i love the 80s i love cheesy 80s stuff like
spk_0
but i don't like i love i love here i go again and is this love but i don't really love white
spk_0
snake i love tawny katane more than i love white snake but i do go songs or i love 17 or cherry pie
spk_0
but i don't really love those bands i love these songs are also cheesy but they are way better
spk_0
musically and they aged better they're still giving cheesy 80s but i think they're great
spk_0
without you as gorge and do you know makes it extra tender is that niki six wrote this about
spk_0
heather locklayer and tawny he thought to himself one day he wrote it from tawny's perspective
spk_0
thinking about how he would feel if he lost heather but with you by my side you're the reason
spk_0
of my life same situation like i said it is literally about a girl leaving a guy for a girl
spk_0
as niki said the subject plagues men worldwide i don't know if that's true he said i love it
spk_0
because when electric heard it they were like oh this is perfect for a single in a motley fashion
spk_0
we were like wonderful we'll tell you later that it's about lesbians
spk_0
cruel
spk_0
sticky sweet is notable for the fact that steven tyler and brian adam sing backing vocals on the
spk_0
song that's pretty they were hanging around i don't know big deal
spk_0
what about she goes down can you read us some racy learx where's she going gossy down she
spk_0
went down baby little ms muffet sweet girl school stuff in a country smile and charm
spk_0
sassy little lassie walk and right past me um according to been snail there is actual sex
spk_0
being done in the background of that song he said being done i don't know if that's how you
spk_0
would phrase it there's sex happening in the background if you listen real close
spk_0
well robin zander from cheap trick and rick nielson from cheap trick sing backing vocals on this one
spk_0
don't go away mad just go away was inspired by niki hearing that line in a movie but he couldn't
spk_0
remember which movie but according to the internet it's likely in 1986 his heartbreak rich
spk_0
starring clenny swim okay there you go so what happens when they're on when they're this big gossy
spk_0
okay i'll tell you what happens this album is like a little more well received by the critics like
spk_0
the alley times gives it three stars jarnathan gold many rest in peace many people forget that
spk_0
besides being one of the most iconic food writers of all time he was first in music critic
spk_0
he says something really good he says of all the le glam metal bands of the 80s molly crew has always
spk_0
understood both the base city rollers kind of teen dream appeal and the importance of the rift
spk_0
the pounding shrieking two cord monoliths that have always powered the best hard rock he nailed it
spk_0
like he said before they always understood pop and teenagers but they also always like had riffs
spk_0
when i'm thinking back on like all the cheesy long haired fluffy mtv rock that i fucking love both
spk_0
ironically and non ironically the riffs is what saves molly crew the riffs is why we actually really
spk_0
like them the riffs i agree the riffs save them from just being this like this like each
spk_0
through Hollywood story you know what i mean like they're even even when they're bad they're just so
spk_0
interesting molly crew i agree i mean the riffs some like you said it already but i think if people
spk_0
have chances there's so much now extra release material where you can hear a more bare bones version
spk_0
of some of the songs like the garagey like we're talking about and then you really are like oh
spk_0
actually this is a good song like i might not like it under like the sheen and veneer of tom warmans
spk_0
extreme 80s production but like the bones of it are fucking the bones of this house they'd be good
spk_0
all right doctor feel a good tour babe were you into them enough in 1989 90 to go see them on tour
spk_0
not at all i really wasn't that interested in them like listen in 1989 when
spk_0
of music videos on mtv whether or not you want to watch it's against your will so watch
spk_0
totally i mean i'm not changing the channel i'm just watching mtv for literally like eight hours
spk_0
you know yeah there's a lot of videos like that that are burned into my brain then i'm like
spk_0
i don't even why do i remember that yeah these are just on it wasn't something that i was that
spk_0
into at the time yeah well this tour is the one where Tommy starts using the flying drum set
spk_0
where he is in the contraption spinning around over the audience as stop in new haven
spk_0
canada gay he does fall and hit his head really hard it has to go to the hospital yeah crash is
spk_0
right on top of someone else's head yes yes but otherwise a great success assume his cowbell
spk_0
was firmly secured in the flying contraption once again they have an extremely grueling tour
spk_0
schedule and they do not exactly stay sober you guys i'm so sorry to report Tommy said what began
spk_0
as a clean and wholesome tour had near the end turned into a sick sexual circus we were sobered
spk_0
had nothing else to do the girls became our only entertainment but then our relationships at
spk_0
home were suffering from neglect and we were all seeking alcohol buying drugs and reverting
spk_0
to our old self destructive habits the possible exception of mick whose fiance happened to be on
spk_0
the road with us the back of singer oh yeah mick was engaged to the back up singer emmy all right now
spk_0
it's not anyone the doctor feel good tour wild ruling is over everyone has relapsed the band is
spk_0
negotiating a new deal with electra Vince is really mad at this point in terms of partying like
spk_0
he kind of like just goes crazy and like is fucking up and they like basically tells to stop
spk_0
coming to rehearsals because he just like is not being productive or helpful at rehearsals
spk_0
so he goes on a bender after they tell him not to come and then he goes to rehab again
spk_0
and Doug Thaler was like oh we all flew down to meet with Vince we encouraged him to make the band
spk_0
of priority and he swore he would and blah blah okay they put out their first uh greatest hits
spk_0
decade of decadence 81 to 91 that's an October and then in December they go back to the studio Vince
spk_0
just does not show up he stops coming it all comes to a head one day there's a terrible storm in
spk_0
LA it caused crazy floods that swept over the winter of rewain flooded the subalbidabase and killed
spk_0
six people but still Tommy and Nicky drove two hours each to get to the rehearsal in Burbank
spk_0
and make even longer because I think we make live in the South Bay and Vince who lived
spk_0
much closer to Burbank just never showed up they keep calling and keep calling keep getting a busy
spk_0
signal and after four hours of waiting for him they had their tormentors send him a facts
spk_0
say get your ass to rehearsal they faxed his ass and 15 minutes later he called the studio and said oh
spk_0
sorry the phone lines were down and Nicky said that sent me off the phone lines were down then how
spk_0
the fuck did the facts go through you had the phone off the hook because you didn't want a fucking come
spk_0
in all of us drove through floods to get here and you couldn't even be bothered and Vince was like dude
spk_0
take it easy I thought rehearsal was canceled anyway with the flooding and Nicky was like we waited
spk_0
for him and then someone in the studio said they had seen Vince out completely wasted at 3am
spk_0
previous night whether it was true or not it didn't matter the conversation had already taken on
spk_0
a mutinist tone except for Nick we were all slipping off the wagon but Vince was the only one who
spk_0
was letting it affect his work who was getting caught all the time and he was constantly lying about
spk_0
it by the time he arrived the scene was already planted our minds that he was holding us back maybe
spk_0
Vince had walked in and apologized for staying out so late the night before and sleeping through
spk_0
rehearsal everything would have been fine but he didn't they have a huge blowout fight babe Vince says
spk_0
I think this album is stupid anyways I hate it it's not going well no he storms out this is when Vince
spk_0
is out of the band Nicky says he says he was fired I say he was quit he quit but whatever he's out
spk_0
I know the feeling of being thrown out of a band no no no just being like I don't go fuck dude I'm so
spk_0
sick of this right so sick of this thing that has been such a big high I'm like sick of the high
spk_0
I'm not not high like drug high like just like thinking of like career highs and then yeah
spk_0
personalities get fucked up or you start being like you know what the reason this is a big
spk_0
nightmare is because of blah blah not not because of me it's like if only blah blah wasn't the
spk_0
big totally fuck me ass hole Nicky basically said that too he said Vince was the scapegoat it wasn't
spk_0
really him it was exactly what you're saying yeah yeah I'm like and like and like they're all
spk_0
falling off the wagon but Vince is the worst but then there's also like maybe you need to get the
spk_0
music together and Vince will drop the the vocals later when you know too I'm saying it's just like
spk_0
the whole thing's not working and anyway what sorry what I meant what I meant to say was I do
spk_0
understand the vibe of like don't throw the baby out with the bathwater go fuck yourself like get
spk_0
this fucking baby the fuck throw the baby throw the baby in with the toaster in the bathwater like
spk_0
we don't fucking care die you know so over it like onto the next like we don't need that fucking
spk_0
bitch you know 100% and you know again they didn't really talk about this except there's one
spk_0
little lion from Tommy about the doctor feel good tour where he's like it would have probably
spk_0
been funner for us if we could bring cool opening acts like a yee popper Husker do instead of having
spk_0
to bring these cheesy pop metal posters like warrant or white snake it's also we have to remember
spk_0
1991 like the tide is absolutely shifting 1991 is the year the punk broke 1991 is the year that
spk_0
nirvana never mind came out and it's in December it hadn't done world domination yet but it was just
spk_0
about it's just about to go number one on the charts in January right after Christmas yeah warrant
spk_0
and white snake in 1991 does sound really random to me it sounds like they were like it was 1990 but
spk_0
yeah it's the tail end like yeah obviously use your illusion comes out in 1991 so like but guns and
spk_0
roses is a secret third thing right like guns and roses like occupied a little bit of a different
spk_0
space than the poison and the molly crew of the world and I think you were I remember because by
spk_0
1990 when I'm the one glue temp TV and I thought guns and roses was cool and I thought nirvana was
spk_0
cool like I thought they're in my my little mind who didn't understand the difference I hope
spk_0
they were both cool but I thought molly crew was fucking corny like I was like get these men with
spk_0
their crazy you know like yeah yeah yeah cherry pie like fuck out of my television like bring back
spk_0
the cool you know November rain video and bring back the smells like teens were a video like
spk_0
that was where my and and also red hot slip up was I was very like to me those three bands were
spk_0
just like in one part and parcel of cool months it's it's clearly it's not working my point was
spk_0
that the sun is setting on molly crew's type of situation yeah and I think that must have been felt
spk_0
in some way alongside all of this you know like you're seeing this right like
spk_0
niggie six is nothing if not in touch with what's cool I mean he loved the nure you know like
spk_0
there's no way that he's not seeing the shift that's happening in culture without a doubt
spk_0
unless he's too high on drugs I don't know Vince said later on this was in the dirt so I had beg dug
spk_0
for a long time for help I told him that I was having a lot of problems to tune my wife and the
spk_0
confusion of her feeling aged out of rock music at 30 I explained to him that I was badly in need of help
spk_0
if the band was upset at me for missing rehearsals I wanted them to understand that had nothing
spk_0
to do with them I loved molly crew I would have done anything for them I don't know if Doug ever
spk_0
told the band about our conversation because the next thing I knew Doug was calling my house saying
spk_0
the band doesn't want you around anymore I'm willing to release you from your management contract
spk_0
tonight if you want I was stunned I expected we'd cool off for a week then I'd get a call from
spk_0
niggie and we'd start working together again I just butted okay and hung up this is pretty much
spk_0
the cog has now fallen off the thing yeah because this is where we're just gonna get to the end of it
spk_0
it's also like when you when you hit it that hard you're like I want to do it again but I'm also
spk_0
scared that there's no way in hell to do it so you're really stressed and you are looking for a
spk_0
tip because you don't know if you got it you know yeah it's like a self-salt it's like a subconscious
spk_0
self-sabotage so you don't even have to try again yeah also I just want to point out I don't remember
spk_0
it and you may remember I don't want exactly when it is it's a little bit it's later than this but
spk_0
when Vince has the terrible oh god I cried so much when I was reading the dirt when this four
spk_0
little girl gets cancer and passes away that ruined me this is after he gets picked out of the band
spk_0
yes okay so the team is like please don't kick Vince out because they know that this is stupid
spk_0
but they're like sorry no it's over they also had a new contract with a lecture for $25
spk_0
million which is actually crazy because you know who didn't see the writing on the wall was a
spk_0
lecture and they were worried that they would read an egg on it if Vince left but they were like no
spk_0
we're doing this Nikki calls up this guy John Coroby who was in a band called the scream not to
spk_0
be confused with the DC hardcore band scream you guys and he auditions and joins the band
spk_0
and Tommy said there was a whole new school of bands coming out heavy hardship like Piantera and
spk_0
prom and with Vince gone and the tattooed dirt bag like Coroby and we really finally had the tools
spk_0
to get into some real shit I don't know if you ever looked up what John Coroby looks like
spk_0
the next Molly crew album comes out in 1994 honey and also like they've spent a lot of money
spk_0
right I've spent a ton of money everything has changed 994 babe the world is a fucking absolutely
spk_0
different place we have Pearl Jam now do you know what I mean we have Allison Chains grunge has come
spk_0
and like nearly gone like we're already into like weezer and green date territory this is just like
spk_0
the whole the cranberries like alternative rock it's downward spiral nine inch nails like people
spk_0
are not checking for Molly crew if I'm being honest I want your honesty we all do we all do well okay
spk_0
so grunge had happened Molly crew self title comes out in 94 produced by Bob rock they once again
spk_0
are like no drugs no drinking healthy healthy this album is just it exists it exists it is not
spk_0
well received and in my kind of opinion like the cog fell off and like they'll always be iconic
spk_0
they'll always be Molly crew and I'm just gonna go through with you because we can't miss these
spk_0
things I'm gonna go through with you in a bullet point way what happens between 1996 and now
spk_0
in 1996 this is two years after the Coroby album rolling stone magazine breaks the news
spk_0
Ben Steele is returning to Molly crew they put out an album in 97 called Generation Swine have you
spk_0
you
spk_0
do you want to scream it had a really cool cover to be honest it does it does have a good cover yeah
spk_0
the pig heads and stuff I mean the graphic design it leads a little to be but like it's not for me
spk_0
but I could see them finding an audience with like maybe people who like new metal I don't know
spk_0
in 1998 Nikki six fought and like did this whole thing and like got the rights to their catalog back
spk_0
which is so crazy I think he gave up a lot of money for it but it ended up being the best
spk_0
financial decision in the world because the end of I mean this is gold to have your to own your
spk_0
rights to your catalog in 1989 Tommy Lee quit to pursue his own band methods of mayhem because
spk_0
him and then Steele were fighting all the time and Vince punched him on the day when they were
spk_0
touring their greatest hits album they did the album new tattoo forgettable 2001 is when the book
spk_0
that you love so much the dirt came out in 2003 they put out a box set two box sets called Music
spk_0
to Crash your Car 2 which I do find to be a questionable title given the history of the band but
spk_0
Vince Neal in 2003 is featured on the first season of the VH1 reality show The Serial Life
spk_0
with MC Hammer and Manuel Lewis Gabrielle Carter and Cory Phil
spk_0
Wow I watched a few episodes on YouTube just to get back into this that show is crazy
spk_0
in 2005 I watched the show that I want to talk about 2005 real quick Tommy Lee was in a reality
spk_0
show called Tommy Lee goes to college and in 2005 this kind of thing was on networked it was on NBC
spk_0
Yeah I watched part of the first episode and I really enjoyed it he won he goes to the University
spk_0
of Nebraska he's like 42 years old it's pretty amazing there's a great film called Back to School
spk_0
starting Rodney Dangerfield from 1985 in which they are inspired 10 years later and I say yes
spk_0
it's great 20 years later 20 years later thank you they do a reunion tour babe in 2008 Vince
spk_0
Neal hosts something called the Motley Cruise Wow with rat skatero and slaughter put out another
spk_0
album 2008 called The Saints of Los Angeles 2009 important for me they make a guest appearance on
spk_0
the television program bones and perform Dr. Phil Good I did watch the rewatch the episode in
spk_0
preparation for this oh yeah oh yeah this is really crazy in 2014 they launched the final Motley
spk_0
Cruise tour in which they signed this very highly publicized cessation of touring agreement like
spk_0
basically legally stating they'll never tour again only to tour like the next year yes and
spk_0
it will not the next year but once they do it causes this huge lawsuit which I think they're
spk_0
currently in with Mick Mars oh Motley crew and Mick Mars are in this lawsuit together yeah because
spk_0
Mick Mars doesn't want to tour anymore because it can't because you know and then he said he said
spk_0
you guys can't tour you said we signed this and they're like we can't so it's a whole thing 2019
spk_0
wasn't when the agreement just filmed the dirt came out I'm so sorry respect to everyone I'm not
spk_0
watching that like machine gun Kelly as Tom Tommy Lee was is Greek babe like what are we even doing
spk_0
here what are we like what are we even doing here it's fine it's just that I feel protective now
spk_0
of the Motley Cruise tour and I just feel like it could have been done much better I just want to say
spk_0
one more thing read the dirt for 2001 book it's so fucking good I want to caveat it by saying it's
spk_0
it is really good but it's also very harrowing and it's difficult to read and I think for a woman
spk_0
it's it's lightly triggering and and I think that that you should know that before you read it because
spk_0
there's definitely some treatment of women that is not ideal I yes sorry I also would like to say
spk_0
it's like this insane time capsule of real rock stardom and I appreciate it for what it is and I
spk_0
agree with what yoss he's saying however it's a history of lives that will never be lived again
spk_0
it's definitely unborn it's the truth yeah it's the truth or like it's or sorry if some stories are
spk_0
made up the overall truth about these insane American originals is unbornish so I think it's
spk_0
interesting but but we don't but don't don't watch the fucking Netflix 2019 bullshit version of
spk_0
that read it I mean like it's better to read something that's fucked up a real you know what
spk_0
Nikki six say Nikki six would say read a book yeah yeah yeah dude in 2022 the co-headline
spk_0
to stadium throw with deaf leopard with poison early opening this is when they were I allegedly
spk_0
apparently who knows in breach of that contract and make mars said he was gonna retire from health
spk_0
issues and blah blah and then just they had Las Vegas residency this month and literally September
spk_0
12th they put out a from the beginning greatest hits type compilation which we didn't even know
spk_0
is happening Mel when we were prepping for this because we just know everything I heard they're
spk_0
working on a documentary too and that has the Dalai apartment and home on it and now we're present
spk_0
we've caught up we've told the motley crew story wow and Vince had a stroke Vince had a stroke I believe
spk_0
in December of 2024 which pushed off their residency to be in the fall of this year when I was
spk_0
so speerler last year hey yasi fuck Mary kill Mary molly crew okay what year is it it is 1985
spk_0
five I'm marrying Nikki six I'm fucking Tommy Lee and I'm murdering Vince Neil what about you I am
spk_0
fucking Nikki six and Tommy Lee in a three way I'm murdering Vince Neil and you're marrying
spk_0
make mars I guess I love that for you yeah it actually would probably be a nice life it's sweet yeah
spk_0
