spk_0 People are attracted to stories.
spk_0 They want to know her story.

spk_0 that she's telling and she does a really good job
spk_0 at inviting the audience in to be a part of that.

spk_0 So grab your favorite drink and let's get to the episode.
spk_0 Hey, Allie, welcome back to the show.
spk_0 I should just stop welcoming you at this point
spk_0 because you're all here.
spk_0 But what's up, how's it going?
spk_0 Welcome.
spk_0 It's going well.
spk_0 It's been a busy season, I feel like, for both of us.
spk_0 But things are really exciting.
spk_0
spk_0 And I am super, super grateful for that.
spk_0 Yeah, no, seriously, I'm literally in Philadelphia
spk_0 right now at a conference.
spk_0 So absolutely has been crazy, but excited to chat about this.
spk_0 I mean, we're going to talk about Taylor Swift,
spk_0 which is really funny because I feel like both of us
spk_0 are kind of moderate fans.
spk_0 But I think there's so much from a business
spk_0 and marketing sense that we can learn from Taylor Swift.
spk_0 And so we're going to kind of dive into that.
spk_0 This is a very timely episode.
spk_0 We are releasing this the day before the life
spk_0 of a showgirl releases October 3rd, 2025.
spk_0 And there's been even things that have come up
spk_0 through that release as well that will dive into.
spk_0 So I'm very curious like what everyone else thinks of this.
spk_0 I feel like I personally like think in business.
spk_0 Like I'll go to do something non-business related
spk_0 and I'm like, how does this work?
spk_0 And what can I take away from this?
spk_0 And maybe that's not a good thing all the time.
spk_0 I feel like that's like a marketing.
spk_0 I have the same thing.
spk_0 I feel like I will see an activation
spk_0 that someone is doing whether it's like one of our favorite
spk_0 like Disney small shops or like someone that popped up
spk_0 at a different event.
spk_0 And like I'm thinking in terms of like business
spk_0 and marketing and how they're showing up.
spk_0 And so what I think sparked this episode for both of us
spk_0 is the way that Taylor Swift went about talking specifically
spk_0 about life of a showgirl but just how she kind of re-emerged
spk_0 and is entering this new quote unquote era.
spk_0 And so I'm super excited to chat about it
spk_0 because I agree.
spk_0 I think there's a lot we can learn from her,
spk_0 particularly around personal branding, using podcasting
spk_0 and so very excited to dive in.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 Well, first what's been in your glass lately?
spk_0 Or do you have anything fun right now?
spk_0 We're recording this by the way.
spk_0 Early in the morning.
spk_0 Early for me.
spk_0 I think it's coffee time right now.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 Right.
spk_0 We love if you're on video.
spk_0 I love Mind Nespresso Machine
spk_0 and I have converted Cassie as well to an espresso lover.
spk_0 And so I have one of the blue bottle New Orleans Nespresso pods
spk_0 with some vanilla protein from owned
spk_0 because that is the best way for me to get some protein
spk_0 in first thing in the day.
spk_0 So I put it directly in my coffee.
spk_0 Coffee lovers will hate that because it dilutes
spk_0 any like cream, creamer or anything else.
spk_0 But for me, it's a nice way to get some protein in.
spk_0 How about you?
spk_0 Hey, you know what?
spk_0 No, I just have water right now,
spk_0 but I was just going to say I was at Starbucks yesterday,
spk_0 which I'm going to hit up after this recording
spk_0 because I need some caffeine.
spk_0 But they have protein colfo now.
spk_0 Like they, I think they just released it like this week.
spk_0 I'm running.
spk_0 And I thought of you and I meant to send it to you.
spk_0 But yeah, I think that's going to be more of a thing.
spk_0 Like how can we make coffee like almost not a meal,
spk_0 but like kind of a meal, you know, in a way,
spk_0 like some more nutrient and it's really helpful.
spk_0 And I just like the own that I drink is like 32 grams
spk_0 of protein, like first thing in the morning,
spk_0 which is like, yeah, that's good.
spk_0 And so I love that we are trending that way.
spk_0 That is, that is super exciting.
spk_0 Yes, absolutely.
spk_0 Well, let's let's dive into this conversation.
spk_0 It's so funny, like speaking of thinking
spk_0 in like business and marketing sense.
spk_0 2023, I guess is when I went to the Aristotle,
spk_0 which is, that's wild.
spk_0 That's terrifying.
spk_0 Anyways, I digress, but it's so funny.
spk_0 Like I found myself even going to the Aristotle
spk_0 and like thinking in this way.
spk_0 So I remember right after I think I went to the show,
spk_0 I recorded two videos on like business
spk_0 and marketing lessons from Taylor.
spk_0 And that's part of kind of, I think,
spk_0 what sparked this episode.
spk_0 But just kind of want to recap.
spk_0 Obviously that was like such a huge time in culture.
spk_0 It was everywhere.
spk_0 I mean, for however long she toured what like a year and a half
spk_0 plus, I think it was almost two years.
spk_0 Followed by the way that she promoted the tour,
spk_0 the way that she, you know, sprinkled different things
spk_0 within the tour.
spk_0 It was absolutely crazy.
spk_0 So just a couple of things I want to recap here.
spk_0 And then Ali, I'd love to get your thoughts on this.
spk_0 But I think number one is audience storytelling.
spk_0 I mean, if you know anything about Taylor Swift,
spk_0 you know that she is a master storyteller.
spk_0 It's not only with her music, but it's in a live setting
spk_0 in the way that she curates this experience.
spk_0 That tells a story across the board, across three hours.
spk_0 And that is something that she is absolutely fantastic.
spk_0 And I think part of the reason why she is so captivating
spk_0 is because of that.
spk_0 Like people are attracted to stories.
spk_0 They want to know her story.
spk_0 They want to feel like they're a part of a story
spk_0 that she's telling.
spk_0 And she does a really good job at inviting the audience in
spk_0 to be a part of that.
spk_0 And creating music that's super relatable,
spk_0 that people can feel like they connect with.
spk_0 You know, so that's kind of my first point there.
spk_0 That's almost an obvious one,
spk_0 but it's just something to remember as a brand.
spk_0 How can you tell really captivating stories?
spk_0 And then how can you invite the audience in
spk_0 in a very relatable, humanistic way?
spk_0 I think one thing too that comes to mind.
spk_0 And as you mentioned at the top of that,
spk_0 but so like I would consider myself
spk_0 like more of a moderate fan.
spk_0 However, I did, the last time I saw her
spk_0 was actually on the red tour.
spk_0 And I would say that she had the same audience story
spk_0 telling then, then she does now.
spk_0 Like a lot of the same things in the same threads
spk_0 are connected through her performances.
spk_0 And I was again, red is my favorite
spk_0 while we're talking about favorite albums.
spk_0 And so for me to be able to see that and connect
spk_0 to the different songs and the different ways
spk_0 that she is telling the story through her lyrics on site
spk_0 and particularly through her live shows is incredible.
spk_0 And that is not new for her.
spk_0 Like she has been doing that.
spk_0 And I think is leading the way for a lot of artists
spk_0 to emulate that kind of style
spk_0 because it is an incredible way to connect with the audience.
spk_0 And I think that's kind of our next point too.
spk_0 Yeah, yeah, it's that consistency too, I think.
spk_0 Even though you're reinventing yourself essentially,
spk_0 like how can you still have that through line
spk_0 of consistency and theme or the way
spk_0 that you're showing up or whatever.
spk_0 But yeah, driving connection with audience,
spk_0 I think it's a big one.
spk_0 Like the thing, you know, actually at this conference
spk_0 that I'm at, digital summit, one of the speakers
spk_0 was talking about how she allows the audience
spk_0 to be kind of the hero or the main character of the story.
spk_0 Like she's always talking directly to the audience.
spk_0 It's you, it's you, it's whatever.
spk_0 Like when she posted her engagement, it was your,
spk_0 I'm gonna butcher this, your gym teacher
spk_0 and whatever she called herself are getting married.
spk_0 Yeah, and it's like that, that is so genius.
spk_0 Like it's so simple, but it's allowing the person
spk_0 to feel like they have like a state in the situation
spk_0 or they're kind of a part of that.
spk_0 And again, I think that is so huge
spk_0 for just building this fandom in this community.
spk_0 So again, I think this just goes back to again,
spk_0 in a marketing sense, how can you connect
spk_0 with your audience one to one?
spk_0 Like it's a one to one relationship with each consumer,
spk_0 making them feel like they are kind of a part of that story
spk_0 and just building connection over time.
spk_0 And there's a number of different ways to do that,
spk_0 but always thinking about how can we bring our community
spk_0 and our people together?
spk_0 Yeah, I'm thinking back to the day she got engaged.
spk_0 Not only was like I had 1300 group chat messages,
spk_0 I will say a lot of the things that I saw on social media
spk_0 that were interesting.
spk_0 And again, just taking a giant step back
spk_0 as just sort of a moderate fan,
spk_0 but someone who's like values pop culture
spk_0 and is excited for her in general,
spk_0 a lot of stories that I saw on Instagram, particularly said,
spk_0 like I'm so happy for my close personal friend Taylor Swift.
spk_0 And like people like genuinely do that.
spk_0 Like they genuinely feel like she is speaking directly to them
spk_0 on one-on-one, and that is something
spk_0 that is so unprecedented as it relates to like
spk_0 from a personal brand perspective,
spk_0 that she has done such a great job
spk_0 starting from the beginning of her career till now,
spk_0 where she has had all of these albums and all of these releases
spk_0 and all of these secret sessions.
spk_0 And it's incredible that people feel so deeply connected
spk_0 and called to her.
spk_0 And she continues to raise the bar, I think,
spk_0 for marketers and other artists as well.
spk_0 Yes, absolutely.
spk_0 The next thing, I'm gonna kind of combine the next two points here,
spk_0 but Easter eggs and just teasing content live
spk_0 to build mystery and intrigue through emerging media types.
spk_0 So she does a fantastic job at this,
spk_0 whether it is the door, for example, at the end of the tour.
spk_0 I feel like everyone kind of saw that, especially once.
spk_0 This album was announced and everything.
spk_0 And she is so masterful at just sprinkling little nuggets
spk_0 and things to kind of pick up on that come to life later.
spk_0 And people are drawn to that.
spk_0 Like they want this sense of mystery.
spk_0 They want to try to figure out what is going on
spk_0 and what she's telling.
spk_0 And she knows that and she does a really good job
spk_0 at like infusing that.
spk_0 And as she said in the podcast episode on the new heights,
spk_0 which we'll get to in a minute, she was like,
spk_0 you know, it's not as much as you all think.
spk_0 However, it is there.
spk_0 So, you know, the audience has taken it kind of
spk_0 to an extreme level in a way,
spk_0 but it's so cool to see that she, it's almost fan service.
spk_0 Like she knows exactly what the fans want.
spk_0 She is giving them what they want.
spk_0 You know, there's so many different things
spk_0 that are that she's done or even like announcing
spk_0 new albums live during the show.
spk_0 I think she announced, was it 1989 Taylor's version
spk_0 or one of the, no, speak now Taylor's version?
spk_0 She announced at the air tour.
spk_0 So again, she's using this live audience,
spk_0 this like intimate setting, quote-unquote,
spk_0 to share something with the fans.
spk_0 That is just for them as well.
spk_0 So again, I think just being creative with the way
spk_0 that you are teasing things, building mystery,
spk_0 building intrigue, especially around like product launches.
spk_0 I think is a really good thing to take away from this.
spk_0 And you can get super creative with this.
spk_0 Like I think she has made it very proven
spk_0 that you do not have to play safe with this stuff,
spk_0 but just get creative and see how the audience
spk_0 and fans react.
spk_0 For sure.
spk_0 And I think, again, Taylor's just a unique example, right?
spk_0 Because she has a lot of budget and things
spk_0 like that at her disposal.
spk_0 But I think if we're relating this to smaller
spk_0 to midsize to large brands, there are other things
spk_0 that you can do that are more like quote unquote, stumpy
spk_0 to get your brand out there and start to tease
spk_0 different things.
spk_0 Maybe it's placing a couple of balloons around a city
spk_0 that have a specific campaign slogan on them
spk_0 or messaging on them that you want the public to find
spk_0 and start to talk about on social.
spk_0 I think there are ways you can do that with stencils
spk_0 on the sidewalk.
spk_0 Like we've seen that quite a bit, I think, particularly
spk_0 in New York, is getting sidewalk stencils or stickers
spk_0 or things like that that start to tease that campaign messaging
spk_0 that kind of create that mystery, that intrigue, that buzz.
spk_0 And that is what ultimately carries her through Taylor,
spk_0 specifically through these launches, right?
spk_0 Because you get this sort of social reaction
spk_0 in the interim from that audience talking about
spk_0 speak now Taylor's version.
spk_0 And that's how it's launched.
spk_0 So it's completely launched through the audience feedback,
spk_0 which I think is just an incredible way to do anything
spk_0 is that the audience is like driving that excitement
spk_0 and that buzz from that live moment specifically.
spk_0 And I think thinking about the sort of emerging media types,
spk_0 like how can you as a brand get creative
spk_0 with how you're teasing an upcoming product launch
spk_0 or say you have a celebrity partner,
spk_0 like what are the ways that you can think about
spk_0 leveraging that celebrity partner
spk_0 or something that's hyper specific to that celebrity partner
spk_0 to gain excitement and gain traction
spk_0 from their already loyal fan base.
spk_0 So there are a couple of things there that are layered in,
spk_0 but I do think thinking outside the box
spk_0 when it comes to these, and I use emerging media,
spk_0 I think kind of loosely because like some of it may not
spk_0 be considered traditional media,
spk_0 but I do think there are ways to really get creative
spk_0 with that.
spk_0 And it's exciting to see different kinds of media types
spk_0 step into the mix.
spk_0 I think I recently saw that New York Caps are doing holograms
spk_0 on top of their, on top of the Caps
spk_0 instead of the actual taxi toppers.
spk_0 You can actually put a physical hologram on.
spk_0 That is incredible, right?
spk_0 That's a new media type that we haven't had in the past.
spk_0 And I think doing your research and kind of seeing
spk_0 what's out there as a marketer is always really important
spk_0 to see how you can tap into that.
spk_0 Yeah, I also want to point out too,
spk_0 even just using live medium is a really cool tool,
spk_0 like Severance.
spk_0 When Severance, the new season came out,
spk_0 they did that pop up in Grand Central Station
spk_0 and that was absolutely genius.
spk_0 Like Apple hadn't done a ton of crazy promotion
spk_0 and advertising in the past.
spk_0 And the one time they really did it,
spk_0 they went out with a bang and they used the actors
spk_0 and they used this kind of like very simple setting
spk_0 in a way to create this intrigue and it went viral.
spk_0 And it was so well done.
spk_0 And so I think you can kind of go outside the box,
spk_0 Matthew McConaughey, for example,
spk_0 is doing these like live readings of his new book
spk_0 and he's sitting, I don't know if you've seen this.
spk_0 He's like sitting behind, I'll send you a video
spk_0 but he's like sitting behind a glass wall
spk_0 and he's reading poems from his new book
spk_0 in like random cities.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 That's crazy.
spk_0 So like again, that is an extreme example
spk_0 because it's like hiring talent
spk_0 and all of this stuff however,
spk_0 like you could do something as a brand similar to that.
spk_0 It's with using people or using talent
spk_0 that you hire to like illustrate a product or something.
spk_0 So yeah, I'll send it to you.
spk_0 It's pretty cool.
spk_0 I like again, like that to me is so so buzzy
spk_0 and so exciting that like what a great, what a great,
spk_0 yeah, absolutely.
spk_0 So let's talk about the life of the show girl.
spk_0 We already talked about Easter eggs and just story telling
spk_0 and driving connection with the audience.
spk_0 I got to say like when she announced this album
spk_0 on a podcast, I was thrilled.
spk_0 I'm like, we are putting power into podcasting.
spk_0 Yes, please.
spk_0 Like obviously this helped Travis and Jason show,
spk_0 you know, it helped her obviously kind of tap into this new
spk_0 audience and this market that she's kind of tapped into
spk_0 in the past but to really like build a connection with them
spk_0 and show them that she is this normal person.
spk_0 And so long form content, I think just in general,
spk_0 is really powerful.
spk_0 It allows people to get to know you on a deeper level,
spk_0 a longer level and just really hear your story
spk_0 and she did a really good job at just very much humanizing
spk_0 herself and talking about a number of different topics
spk_0 and showing people who she is through that.
spk_0 So I thought that was genius.
spk_0 It was amazing to see her use podcasting
spk_0 and I think it's a huge win for a podcast in general
spk_0 and I will say since that moment in time,
spk_0 I have seen a lot of bigger names like Go On Podcasts.
spk_0 Like there was a four hour podcast with Emma Watson
spk_0 and Jay Shetty that launched again, kind of taking that
spk_0 taking that mystery and intrigue kind of away from from that
spk_0 and Emma hasn't really been on the scene in anything in years,
spk_0 right?
spk_0 She took a break from acting, etc.
spk_0 But she wanted to open the door to her life and her mindset
spk_0 and she used podcasting and long form content
spk_0 as a way to do that, which I think is incredible.
spk_0 And I think this example with Taylor is also amazing.
spk_0 I think one thing that strikes me as exciting
spk_0 about this particularly around long form
spk_0 is what are the other ways that we can take pieces
spk_0 of that long form content and then put it in other places.
spk_0 So for example, I think what you know, I saw after
spk_0 the long form episode because it was, I think,
spk_0 was it about two hours?
spk_0 It was somewhere around there.
spk_0 We started together.
spk_0
spk_0 The individual short form clips out of that.
spk_0 So the content ended up having a longer life cycle
spk_0 because we were able to take different pieces from it
spk_0 and chop it up and make it into other assets,
spk_0 which I think new heights did really well
spk_0 across their social media channels.
spk_0 But I think using a long form podcast as a tool
spk_0 to kind of launch that hero message for you
spk_0 is something really unprecedented.
spk_0 I don't, please correct me if I'm wrong,
spk_0 but I don't think I've really seen any other brands
spk_0 or particularly artists do that.
spk_0 And as per usual, like she is leading the way
spk_0 when it comes to thinking outside the box
spk_0 and announcing something as big as life was over all.
spk_0 Yeah, yeah, it's a huge win for the medium.
spk_0 Again, I was so thrilled to see that.
spk_0 And I think brands can easily translate this.
spk_0 Like don't be afraid to put your founder on a show
spk_0 and talk about a new product or something
spk_0 that you're working on or the director of marketing
spk_0 or whatever.
spk_0 And so using these platforms to really expand a message
spk_0 is huge.
spk_0 Kind of, we already talked through just making
spk_0 that personal brand relatable.
spk_0 I mean, she talked about making sourdough
spk_0 and like her experience with the football growing up
spk_0 and all of this stuff.
spk_0 So I thought that was really huge, of course.
spk_0 And we just always talk about humanization
spk_0 and transparency and authenticity.
spk_0 And that continues to be important
spk_0 in something that she really excels at.
spk_0 And the other thing too, I think that this did
spk_0 is it's continuing that innovation
spk_0 around keeping your audience engaged and excited.
spk_0 Like how can you think outside the box
spk_0 it doesn't have to be around a big campaign launch
spk_0 or whatever or error change.
spk_0 But just how can you continue to show up
spk_0 for your audience in different ways and be in front of them?
spk_0 And I think again, podcasting is a great way to do that.
spk_0 And also this movie that she's coming out with,
spk_0 which we'll talk about in a minute,
spk_0 is another good way to do it.
spk_0 It's giving the fans more.
spk_0 It's keeping her story and her human side
spk_0 in front of the audience.
spk_0 And I think that is just people crave connection.
spk_0 And so how can you kind of lower that veil for consumers overall?
spk_0 I really like that people crave connection.
spk_0 I think she is able to, or she has been able to open up the door
spk_0 to give fans access to her life,
spk_0 completely controlled by her, of course, right?
spk_0 Which I think is also the real balance for her
spk_0 and what I've seen throughout her career is,
spk_0 and she's talked about this in music,
spk_0 in interviews that she's struggled with,
spk_0 how much do I share versus not?
spk_0 And I think she's coming into a phase of her life
spk_0 where she is sharing a little bit more.
spk_0 And one, she's using podcasting to do that.
spk_0 But two, she's keeping her audience engaged and excited
spk_0 because she is doing this and sharing her life pieces
spk_0 of her life in a new and unique way.
spk_0 And I think what I'm already getting
spk_0 sort of from the life of a show girl is,
spk_0 there are new and unique ways that she is telling her experience
spk_0 of touring for two plus years, you know, almost two years.
spk_0 And getting engaged, falling in love again.
spk_0 I think there are so many pillars that are
spk_0 laddering into this album and this story
spk_0 that she's trying to tell,
spk_0 with the visuals, with the sound.
spk_0 I think she's, I've heard she's returning really to her pop roots,
spk_0 which I personally love and I'm super excited about.
spk_0 I think there is just so much to be excited about
spk_0 because she is innovating on herself.
spk_0 She uses herself as the benchmark versus anyone else.
spk_0 And I love that from just like from a personal standpoint,
spk_0 I think it's one up in yourself versus one up
spk_0 from other artists and other categories.
spk_0 And I think she sets the bar for that.
spk_0 In giving that unique spin to each era change
spk_0 has been why the audience is so excited, right?
spk_0 It's different color, merch.
spk_0 It's different color emojis.
spk_0 It's different nail colors.
spk_0 I mean, we've already seen this,
spk_0 I think with a lot of friends too,
spk_0 is that like they've started to adopt the teal in the orange, right?
spk_0 As part of the launch of this album.
spk_0 And I know we will be excited to go to the movies on Sunday
spk_0 and see the live-vigil, the show going on.
spk_0 Yeah, no, I'm very excited too.
spk_0 And again, just to see how this is coming together
spk_0 and like see how even film is being used
spk_0 to promote this new product that she has.
spk_0 Again, I think you said it perfectly
spk_0 where a lot of brands are always looking at other brands
spk_0 and seeing what can I do that similar
spk_0 and capitalize on the success.
spk_0 But it's like how can you set your own benchmark?
spk_0 How can you like just go out there,
spk_0 do something different and creative and unique
spk_0 and launch it and see what happens?
spk_0 And you never know that could end up turning out better
spk_0 than just like copy and pasting a concept from somewhere else.
spk_0 So I think just don't be afraid to be authentically you
spk_0 as cheesy as that sounds.
spk_0 But it's so important.
spk_0 And I think that's really what has set her apart
spk_0 from everyone else.
spk_0 She's really home that.
spk_0 She has done things that are unique.
spk_0 She has broken molds in a number of different areas.
spk_0 And that is something I think all of us can learn
spk_0 and apply in our campaigns and our brands in general.
spk_0 For sure.
spk_0 And so I think I would consider film also long form, right?
spk_0 Like she's also taking another long form medium
spk_0 that most artists have not leaned into.
spk_0 Like I think Aristotle was also in theaters,
spk_0 correct me if I'm wrong.
spk_0 So she had already started to kind of test
spk_0 to like the audience excitement around will my fans
spk_0 go to the theater to see this?
spk_0 And of course the answer is yes.
spk_0 Because again, she has his story brand sort of context
spk_0 from how she's been doing this for years prior.
spk_0 So she knows audiences are engaged and excited
spk_0 and will show up to the movies.
spk_0 And so I think this particularly,
spk_0 it's a new and unique way because it's not technically a concert.
spk_0 It's different.
spk_0 It's where watching lyric videos.
spk_0 We're hearing her side of the process of why
spk_0 and how she's making this and what each song means to her.
spk_0 And that's what we're actually going to the theater to see
spk_0 versus the actual concert.
spk_0 So it's even a different way to show up
spk_0 with long form content in contrast to something like a podcast,
spk_0 right?
spk_0 But it's doing the same thing.
spk_0 It's still taking that veil down and making herself
spk_0 more relatable by bringing us and giving us access
spk_0 into her process, which I think is beyond,
spk_0 beyond cool and different and only in a fashion
spk_0 that only Taylor Swift could do.
spk_0 So I am super excited to see it and we'll have to update everyone
spk_0 after we've seen it with our thoughts.
spk_0 Yes, yes, amazing.
spk_0 This has been great.
