I'm excited about this conversation too but before I hit record I feel like we like the
spk_0
behind the scenes conversations are always my favorite and we're talking about kids and
spk_0
school and like our high school experiences and so we always ask our interviewees tell
spk_0
us what a life first business means to you right now what does that look like?
spk_0
So a life first business I mean this has been this really is when I dove into building my
spk_0
business initially I really anchored myself in making sure the business was supporting my life
spk_0
because you know as a single month well it's a month in general right like we we we don't want
spk_0
our priorities to get out of balance we want our life to be aligned and right now specifically
spk_0
in my life I have what my youngest is 14 she's my last one at home and a life first business means
spk_0
that this week when it was labor day while it could be tempting to get in and catch up on things
spk_0
because I've been out of town I spent the day present with her and I remembered that when we
spk_0
keep our priorities aligned and we prioritize the people and the relationships and our sense of
spk_0
presence our business will thrive in the best possible yeah I love that one of the things that you
spk_0
shared was and I can't remember the timeframe but I feel like it was a decent amount of time you
spk_0
went rafting or hiking through the Grand Canyon like how does that work with kids and a business
spk_0
and being able to take that much time off yeah so so one thing I've done in my business is I have
spk_0
intentionally set it up so that I have a very light schedule in the summer so I run a master coach
spk_0
training and and we really hit the ground running January through May and then in the summer my clients
spk_0
have support because they have continued education calls and accountability but I am not teaching
spk_0
curriculum in the summer and I really I mean if you saw I have this huge calendar to the side of me
spk_0
on this wall it's like a big whiteboard calendar and I mark out the days my daughters off of school
spk_0
I mark out the time that I want off and then I build my schedule around that and so I did go on a
spk_0
river trip and eight gay river trip which meant I was completely off the grid for those eight days
spk_0
and of course traveling longer than that and it was one of those things that you know I was having
spk_0
some extra projects in my business coming up this summer and I could just feel and tell I needed
spk_0
that space and a break and the opportunity opened up to go on this river trip with my brother when
spk_0
we had both of our birthdays when we were on the river and I just came to my team and I said I'm
spk_0
going to do this I know we have our book lunch coming up I know we have enrollment I know we have
spk_0
ads running but I know we can do it because we're all here to make a business that supports our life
spk_0
and so we did it we simplified and we figured it out and and I'm so glad it's always worth it
spk_0
always worth it when you were traveling or when you were starting to set up your trip like what was
spk_0
the turning point for you when you're like okay this needs to be like a new current rhythm or
spk_0
this needs to be kind of like a different way of doing things and what did you change
spk_0
you're talking about like right before I left for my team yeah or just in general like hey I need to
spk_0
be able to create a business where I can leave for a couple of days or I can leave things for my team
spk_0
yeah yeah so I it's kind of like I've I've always done some level of that and then over time I get
spk_0
better and better at it yeah and and I will say with this trip because I was going to actually be
spk_0
off the grid it was it was almost like I just had to let go of things possibly not going perfectly smooth
spk_0
right and and as I mentioned I have quite a few things happening at the moment and and one thing in
spk_0
fact I left my phone with my nephew because you know sometimes how you'll need like a Google code
spk_0
and for the most part my team like they run things well but everyone's in all they'll say hey it's
spk_0
going to send you a code yeah and and I haven't quite we've started to solve for this but that was
spk_0
a good reminder to me thinking if I'm needing to leave my phone with I mean it didn't matter
spk_0
because we wouldn't have connection anyway right but if I'm needing to leave my phone because
spk_0
having access to me is that dire in my business this is an indication something needs to be
spk_0
different because I think that especially in a business like mine where I am very much the business
spk_0
we need to be really careful about about being too crucial to the business right because life
spk_0
does happen yeah not control so many things in life so I don't know that answers your question but
spk_0
honestly what and there's a question for me is like those darn codes like we have tried so many times
spk_0
like how do we get around this how do we figure this out like I don't want people I always say like
spk_0
texting for me is the like only in an emergency situation like there should be some other form
spk_0
of communication but those codes like I mean I appreciate the two factor things but
spk_0
so that's a great example I want to begin to so one of the things that you talk about when you
spk_0
or your clients feel like life is maybe a little overwhelming or feels chaotic or you might be
spk_0
in a situation where you're like I know things need to change but I don't know what to do you have
spk_0
these like fundamentals that you talk about can you share with us what that looks like yes so
spk_0
the four fundamentals of lasting change I'll break them down for you you know just quickly touch
spk_0
points mind mastery emotional resilience nervous system and aligned habits and I'll talk through all
spk_0
of them okay but essentially you know these four fundamentals are really a way for each of us like
spk_0
those of you listening to think about creating change for yourself creating a system that supports
spk_0
the changes you want that takes into account the whole person that you are all different parts of
spk_0
you right because we can all you know go to Google a chat GPT and get a plan of action for what needs
spk_0
to change right we can all do that but then why don't we actually implement the changes right and
spk_0
and we need to change our mindset or do we have emotional blocks what is it and the truth is that
spk_0
it's typically a combination of many things and so that's where understanding these four fundamentals
spk_0
really comes into play for my clients as they're creating their own changes and because I'm training
spk_0
them to be coaches helping them to support their clients with it so and I can go through you want me
spk_0
to kind of break them down I'm happy to dig in if you're open to it oh yeah yeah so so mind mastery
spk_0
when we're talking about mind mastery this is the idea that every single one of you listening every
spk_0
person here and and Holly and me right we all have thought patterns we all have ways of thinking
spk_0
about the world ways of thinking about ourselves and belief beliefs that we really just take for granted
spk_0
as truth about the world right and so when I'm talking about mind mastery I'm not really necessarily
spk_0
talking about thinking positively but I'm talking about taking the time to really understand
spk_0
where where you get stuck in your ways of thinking where the ways that you're thinking about your
spk_0
life your business or relationships are limiting your ability to make those changes so that's
spk_0
kind of the essence of the mind mastery piece yeah which feels like we all need I don't know
spk_0
I don't know who would have need that we do we do we all do and you know birth part of what I love
spk_0
about what I do is like I'm not the authority for my clients I'm in this with everyone else right
spk_0
that I'm working on and so it's something for the till the day I die I'll be working on the
spk_0
four fundamentals for myself right yeah yeah 100% all right tell us a second one okay so the second
spk_0
one is emotional resilience and a lot of times we think of emotional resilience as kind of having
spk_0
that grit right being tough and while that's certainly an aspect of emotional resiliency the way
spk_0
that I like to really lean in and teach emotional resiliency is that we all really need to have
spk_0
more of a relationship with our own emotional world because most of us are taught and conditioned
spk_0
and trained to minimize our feelings right don't make emotional decisions don't be so emotional
spk_0
about it we see emotions as this nuisance or something to think when actually when we as human
spk_0
beings can connect with and understand our emotions and work with ourselves emotionally which I
spk_0
know is kind of vague as we're talking about all of these things but but that is how we truly become
spk_0
more of a self-connected human being to where we naturally feel more grounded and anchored and
spk_0
confident in ourselves so it's kind of this difference right between this grit and powering through
spk_0
versus truly being emotionally connected to self and the more emotionally connected we are
spk_0
to ourselves but easier it is to make changes yeah yeah I love that sometimes I feel like I don't
spk_0
know maybe you have clients that are like this where you kind of use grit to like cover your
spk_0
emotion so for me like being an emotional person like forward facing is very difficult like it's
spk_0
so much easier for me to just like oh I'm just gonna work through it or I'll just keep working or
spk_0
keep pushing and you know it will fix itself and so I think I love number two that you're sort of
spk_0
recognizing this like emotional balance all right tell us number three yeah I mean and you nailed
spk_0
it with that especially as ambitious as ambitious women right it's like that that's that's how we've
spk_0
learned to succeed and to be safe in the world but at a certain point we can't do it anymore because
spk_0
we get burned out yeah so we've got two of the fundamentals I'm super curious what the third one is
spk_0
so the third one is nervous system and nervous system regulation and I think we're hearing a lot
spk_0
about the nervous system now and ever and thank goodness because really the nervous system is the
spk_0
backdrop for all of our thoughts all of our emotions and our nervous system is where we have
spk_0
behaviors that are hardwired into our nervous system and and so especially in this well especially
spk_0
coming off the river and being just like totally away from everything I come back to life and
spk_0
realize modern life is pretty stressful and it's very stressful yeah coach because that's what
spk_0
you specialize in like what are some things that you would do to regulate your nervous system because
spk_0
I feel like this is a like we could have a whole podcast on we could have a whole series on this
spk_0
section I know I know yeah in my in master coach training I actually have a nervous system specialist
spk_0
who comes in and she teaches part of the training she has a whole podcast on it her name Leah
spk_0
Davidson so you might want to link to her as well but you know as far as as far as nervous system
spk_0
regulation I think that I think it's we we would all do well to start to learn and understand
spk_0
our own like what is the state of our nervous system and become more aware of times when we are
spk_0
in a state of stress a lot of people don't realize that when we're in a state of kind of
spk_0
overworking and overdoing that's like it it's like a flight response and so I think the first
spk_0
thing is just becoming more aware of those times that we become more emotionally activated and
spk_0
making a practice of pausing and breathing and slowing down to where we're making that pause
spk_0
breathe self-connect more of a pattern for ourselves than the overworking is a pattern because we
spk_0
really truly have to just shift what I don't know you've been into human design at all I share this
spk_0
all the time on the podcast but I'm a manifesting generator and the number one thing that I always
spk_0
read about it is you don't have to make a decision right away you should pause for a second because
spk_0
I like I just I know like I'm just like and most of the time I won't change my mind like I will know
spk_0
right away but I've tried to lean into like okay just take a breath like even if you know the answer
spk_0
or you know what you want to do like you wait 24 hours like it's fine it's okay so I love that
spk_0
yeah all right what is number four and number four is aligned habits and I also talk about this as
spk_0
having an action strategy that actually works because like I said earlier right we can have a
spk_0
plan of action but is it going to work and so anytime we're setting up a plan of action toward our
spk_0
goals or toward whatever changes we want to make we need to understand that our mindset affects how
spk_0
well we follow through our emotional resilience impacts how well we follow through and our nervous
spk_0
system state and so it's like having a plan of action which is going to help us create those
spk_0
consistent habits that make life easier is going to be extra like it's an extremely beneficial tool
spk_0
as we're creating change and and we want to create that plan of action taking into account
spk_0
thought patterns yeah walk us through like what a plan of action might look like like by and
spk_0
incorporating those things okay oh I love this question so one thing I do with my coaches and my
spk_0
training program is we have a quarterly planning call where we plan out what is their goal and so
spk_0
you know will identify what the goal is will identify what are all the things you need to do to get
spk_0
there and we're doing this together and I think there is a lot of I want to speak to this because
spk_0
we can all do this on our own and there's a lot of power in co-regulating with one another in
spk_0
supporting and encouraging one another so we set up this plan together and then one of the things
spk_0
we do is we go through obstacles and strategies and what this might look like is I might say okay
spk_0
so Kim you know one of the things on your list is to you know build this piece of your funnel
spk_0
let's talk about all the things that are going to get in the way of that right and then we and
spk_0
then we list out and these can be things like I might avoid it well we probably all do it right
spk_0
right right right so it's like let's be honest about what's going to get in the way I might be too
spk_0
tired I might feel kind of lazy I might you know be an analysis paralysis you know limited time
spk_0
whatever it is and so we really lay out what are all the things that could and would possibly get
spk_0
in the way and then how do we have a strategy for each of those and this is the piece where I think
spk_0
most of the time we set up a plan and then we go full force and then we hit that point where we
spk_0
are too tired or whatever and then what do we say about it oh I'm just too lazy I'm not good at
spk_0
following through we just make all of these blanket statements that aren't actually solving the
spk_0
problem right and so instead what we do is we say okay let's look at more what does it look like
spk_0
when you're too tired what's going on right and then we're coming up with strategies maybe they need
spk_0
to move the time of day that they're working on whatever this thing is or maybe what they need to do
spk_0
is build in some you know some tapping to work with their emotions or whatever it is so we're really
spk_0
zeroing in on let's remove the shame and judgment about where you get stuck and instead let's look
spk_0
at what's going on for you mentally emotionally and as far as your state and let's have some
spk_0
viable solutions built in so that you truly are supported as a full person with all of these parts
spk_0
of you as you're moving towards it. I love writing down the obstacles I think that's genius because
spk_0
I mean they will definitely be some and I think anticipating that they're going to come I mean
spk_0
you mentioned tired and I feel like that's everyone's obstacle in season like I'm just tired I
spk_0
don't want to do it right now and then like figuring out how to sort of work through what that
spk_0
looks like for you. One of the things that you talk about when you talk about goals which we're
spk_0
sort of talking about is this like no feel formula what does that look like?
spk_0
So the no-fail formula I like to think about it as I love hiking and I love climbing too I love
spk_0
rock climbing and if you think about it like if I'm if I'm climbing up a mountain I can have an
spk_0
anchor at the top right where I'm headed and that anchor is what is going to if it's the ultimate
spk_0
goal of where I'm going and if I stay on my rope right and I keep moving then I know they're
spk_0
going to be obstacles along the way they're going to be places that are slick that are prickly
spk_0
you know gravity's working against me all of these things and so what it is that is going to
spk_0
equip me to get to the top is first of all that anchor of knowing where I'm going and I'll relate
spk_0
this to in practical terms as well right and then being equipped with all the tools and skills I
spk_0
need to get up there I write I want to have good climbing shoes I want to have the mental
spk_0
fortitude I want to have the energy I want to have right all the right gear and so when it comes to
spk_0
a no-fail formula the the fact of the matter is that whether you're building a business or changing
spk_0
a relationship or you know moving your fitness goals forward we think it's going to go in exact
spk_0
certain way and it usually never goes that exact certain way okay so a no-fail formula is not oh
spk_0
it's going to go exactly this way but what it is is it's a commitment to saying if I have a goal
spk_0
like for me I'm like I want to have a business that generates this much money and provides
spk_0
this time freedom and flexibility for me to be present with my kids and have a good quality of
spk_0
life that is my anchor and then what I do is along the way I give myself the support that I need to
spk_0
get there so truly the no-fail formula is perfectly integrated with these four fundamentals it's
spk_0
first and foremost a commitment of where you're going that includes your own priorities and values
spk_0
that clarity and then it's along the way how do I just like I'm giving myself you know the nutrition
spk_0
and the right shoes and the mental fortitude and the rest how am I supporting my mind how am I
spk_0
supporting my emotions how am I regulating my nervous system and how am I having the support
spk_0
system around me to get toward the goal because that's truly how we give ourselves the support
spk_0
along the way to make that end result in heaven one of the things that we do and we because we do
spk_0
also do quarterly planning sessions is every month I have our clients set like an anchor statement
spk_0
so that when they look at oh my gosh I just wrote down like all these things that I have to do but like
spk_0
what's the the reason or the anchor that's like driving you like I'm doing this because or my list
spk_0
is busy right now because of this but like my list is going to get better right now because of this
spk_0
and so I think that sort of like leans into that are there anything that you do that helps you like
spk_0
tie yourself back to that anchor yeah I mean I think that one thing that is crucial and this
spk_0
is something that no matter what my clients come to me for this is where we always start is really
spk_0
getting clear on your ideal quality of life and business you know for my clients because it includes
spk_0
business and it really is a way of assessing what are my personal values and priorities and I think
spk_0
that doing that work I recommend everyone do that work doing that work to really differentiate not
spk_0
what do I think I should value who do I think I should be but like for me personally what actually
spk_0
matters to me what do I want and taking the time to connect with that inevitably it brings us to life
spk_0
as an individual as a human being and then the more you can keep that present I feel like that is
spk_0
what can continue to to bring that just like life force in you to keep moving towards your goal.
spk_0
So I know you have a new book coming out I'm super curious because we like to get behind the scenes
spk_0
how did you balance running your coaching business plus your family plus writing which we know is
spk_0
a huge undertake like take us a little behind the scenes of what that looked like.
spk_0
Oh my gosh right what a question question I ask myself every day.
spk_0
We need to balance it maybe have some lessons learned for us.
spk_0
You know I mean the thing is is by nature I am always going to have many things happening at once
spk_0
right and I think I think the keys are truly to stay focused on what's most important right having a
spk_0
good team and I mean it honestly goes when you when you're talking about how do you balance all
spk_0
that it goes back to what I just said about that anchor because what I know is that I you know
spk_0
having been a single mom and raising three kids two or out of the house now and one is still at home.
spk_0
I think God and myself every single day that I stayed committed to having time with them and not
spk_0
allowing the stresses of life to get in the way and so you know now as I balance all of that I
spk_0
stay anchored there and I prioritize my own self-care my own support and that time with them and
spk_0
ultimately if you do that and you just focus on what matters most yeah how it all works out.
spk_0
I know it's like not a very specific.
spk_0
I mean it kind of does go back to that to that anchor which I think is a great message.
spk_0
Okay a couple rapid fire questions for you.
spk_0
What is one coaching tool that you're using right now that's helping you the most?
spk_0
Oh my gosh I mean that truly I know what has been the biggest difference maker for me and is
spk_0
for so many of my clients as well is we use tapping EFT and they learn how to do that with their
spk_0
clients and for themselves and and I think for me it's it's not just the tapping itself but
spk_0
I find the most power and momentum when I when I really connect with my feelings to try to
spk_0
understand what my emotional needs are currently and why the emotions that I'm having come up in my
spk_0
business or life are coming up and you know our emotions are pretty powerful and when we
spk_0
and I know many of I know at a certain point in time everything I'm saying right now at a certain
spk_0
point to me would have seemed like what in the world is she even talking about.
spk_0
So at the risk of that this is what I this is what I will say anyway to those of you listening
spk_0
is that if if you feel called take a minute today to ask yourself what really matters to me.
spk_0
What is it I'm meeting in my life and just asking those two questions more regularly is going to help
spk_0
every one of us to tune in more to really who we are and the desires we have that will bring us to
spk_0
life and that has become I mean that has become the driving force behind it. Yeah, everything.
spk_0
Those are great questions those are a bit kind of questions that like slow you down but point you
spk_0
in the right direction kind of questions. One more question for you if you could go back to
spk_0
the version of yourself when you started your business what would you tell her now.
spk_0
Oh my gosh.
spk_0
You know what I would say to her I would say listen.
spk_0
Oh, I love that.
spk_0
That's it. That's all I would say because I just remember being terrified and having enough
spk_0
determination and yet just in tears fearful. Can I do this and I just want to tell her like you have
spk_0
no idea how much power is inside you so I love that so much goodness I feel like we could just
spk_0
