spk_0 from the biggest names in music.
spk_0 Check out the podcast sometime.
spk_0 On this episode of Music's Greatest Mysteries,
spk_0 the unlikely journey of one of music's most successful
spk_0 and polarizing songs.
spk_0 They go around to all the record labels
spk_0 and present this song, and everybody's like,
spk_0 this is horrible.
spk_0 Then, what's the Super Bowl wardrobe malfunction?
spk_0 Plan.
spk_0 All you remember about Super Bowl 38
spk_0 is Janet Jackson just flashed the world
spk_0 and it changed everything.
spk_0 Finally, Led Zeppelin,
spk_0 one of the most popular bands ever.
spk_0 But are they St. Mourcivers?
spk_0 Why would you buy Alistair Crowley's house
spk_0 if you were not going to perform some sort of satanic ritual?
spk_0 It happened in a flash.
spk_0 A cascade of mullets,
spk_0 acid wash jeans,
spk_0 and the most 90s dance moves ever.
spk_0 One song both captivates
spk_0 and repulses a nation.
spk_0 Aiki Breiki Heart.
spk_0 I don't know if in my lifetime
spk_0 there's been a country song that was a bigger hit.
spk_0 This song wasn't just a song.
spk_0 This was a cultural phenomenon.
spk_0 Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Billy Ray Siren.
spk_0 Billy Ray Siren.
spk_0 Super Bowl, Billy Ray Siren.
spk_0 Before it's even released,
spk_0 the song endures the scorn of music city and beyond.
spk_0 I had no idea they hated the song that bad.
spk_0 My god, it's the worst song I've ever heard.
spk_0 It's too quirky and campy.
spk_0 But it took the guy like Billy Ray Sirens
spk_0 who was quirky and campy.
spk_0 Come out and just own it.
spk_0 And when he owned it, he rest his history.
spk_0 The legend begins in 1990
spk_0 where many great songs and wild stories are born.
spk_0 Nashville, Tennessee.
spk_0 With an aspiring songwriter named Don Von Tress.
spk_0 Don Von Tress was nobody.
spk_0 It was a songwriter who had never had a hit.
spk_0 He came in one day with a cassette that he wanted me to hear.
spk_0 I thought you'd got a shot at making a pretty good record.
spk_0 But you need to go write a second verse.
spk_0 You know, if you get a second verse,
spk_0 I think we can get this song recording.
spk_0 Inspired, Don Tress finishes the song
spk_0 and returns to Zavitson Studio.
spk_0 He came back the next day and read me the second verse.
spk_0 We went down into one of our studios
spk_0 and went in to make a demo of it.
spk_0 The demo was just great.
spk_0 We were all excited about it.
spk_0 That was convinced I had a big hit record.
spk_0 Confident that they now have Nashville's next big thing.
spk_0 They hit music row.
spk_0 The first pitch we made was an Mercury record.
spk_0 So we walked in and we played it.
spk_0 And everybody's like, this is horrible.
spk_0 It was an immediate pass.
spk_0 It's horrible.
spk_0 Whoever records that's an idiot.
spk_0 The head of the label hates it
spk_0 and the head of marketing hates it
spk_0 and the head of publicity hates it.
spk_0 I'd never seen anything like that before.
spk_0 Russ was actually told that if you actually shot this song,
spk_0 you're going to get blacklisted in Nashville.
spk_0 After two years, it seems the journey has run its course.
spk_0 Don't tell my heart is rejected by everybody.
spk_0 Except a band called The Marcy Brothers.
spk_0 Don't tell my heart.
spk_0 I hate you breaking heart.
spk_0 I just don't think you understand.
spk_0 But this version gains zero traction.
spk_0 Then a friend named Harold Chid
spk_0 sees a charismatic up-and-comer named Billy Ray.
spk_0 Harold Chid said, and I think I found Elvis.
spk_0 He said, I went and saw this singer this weekend.
spk_0 He was the craziest thing I've ever seen.
spk_0 He said, he's girls like Tho and their panties
spk_0 and their underwear on stage and screaming for him.
spk_0 And this guy, you know, he's done having records or anything yet.
spk_0 It's Elvis. I'm signing.
spk_0 For the modern Elvis, it becomes a match made in heaven.
spk_0 And on March 23rd, 1992, Billy releases Aikie Breaky Heart.
spk_0 As soon as I heard the demo, I said, I love this.
spk_0 I told Von Trass, have you ever wondered if the name of that song
spk_0 should be Aikie Breaky Heart?
spk_0 And Don Von Trass said, I don't care what you call it, just put it out.
spk_0 Billy Ray Cyrus was probably the perfect person at the perfect time
spk_0 because he was as cheesy as the song was.
spk_0 And he wasn't embarrassed by it. He loved it.
spk_0 He comes in with the white Reeboks, the acid wash jeans,
spk_0 the half shirts, the muscles, the mullet.
spk_0 And he goes, yeah, man, it's where I come from.
spk_0 That's who I am.
spk_0 You can tell the world you never was my girl.
spk_0 I don't know if anyone but Billy Ray believed that song was going to be
spk_0 as big a hit as it was.
spk_0 Coming up, does a miracle save Aikie Breaky Heart?
spk_0 All of a sudden things started happening.
spk_0 It just started blowing up.
spk_0 And later, who's to blame for the most famous wardrobe malfunction ever?
spk_0 There are so many different stories.
spk_0 The real question is, was it planned?
spk_0 For two years, don't tell my heart has been pitched to everyone in Nashville.
spk_0 And been rejected by everyone.
spk_0 Well, almost everyone.
spk_0 The first time I heard Aikie Breaky Heart, it hit me like a smash.
spk_0 It hit me like a universal hit.
spk_0 But success for Billy Ray, it's a real thing.
spk_0
spk_0
spk_0
spk_0 I can't believe this, yeah.
spk_0 I can't believe Cartoon has a deep heart, and with Bryanding and the
spk_0
spk_0
spk_0
spk_0 He's Erik Nay close-ups ponscret.
spk_0 And Danielle tickets a photo shoot.
spk_0
spk_0
spk_0 seen him since ________________ to Jimmy enforcement and back my
spk_0
spk_0 And it was all over TV on Network News that night.
spk_0 This is 1992.
spk_0 Then all of a sudden, you know, things start happening.
spk_0 It just started blowing up.
spk_0 Over night, the song becomes a sensation,
spk_0 going to number one on the country charts,
spk_0 while crossing over to the pop charts,
spk_0 speaking at number two.
spk_0 He was like, this is my song, this is my identity,
spk_0 this is gonna break me to the world.
spk_0 Don't tell my heart, my head can break you heart.
spk_0 Then all of a sudden, everybody started
spk_0 going to country bars and line dancing.
spk_0 Sold every single they ever pressed.
spk_0 They can break your heart, went to number one in four weeks in New Zealand.
spk_0 And it's becoming that universal hit.
spk_0 It's all nine million copies of that album.
spk_0 The single sold him just crazy, all the covers.
spk_0 All the languages.
spk_0 It was completely nuts.
spk_0 It wasn't a country record.
spk_0 It wasn't a pop record, it was a phenomenon.
spk_0 But as popular and as successful as it becomes,
spk_0 it suffers continued criticism.
spk_0 There were a lot of people thought that maybe we messed up country music.
spk_0 I think that people think that a song that's funny can't be great.
spk_0 Music is littered with songs that people hate that are huge hits.
spk_0 Those songs that drives people crazy,
spk_0 they don't understand why people like it.
spk_0 Yet millions and millions of people bought it.
spk_0 Guess who was right?
spk_0 Billy Ray.
spk_0 Aiki Breakey Heart.
spk_0 To those people who don't like Aiki Breakey Heart,
spk_0 here's a quarter, cause someone who tells.
spk_0 Billy Ray Cyrus is not a joke.
spk_0 I mean, that's just the fact.
spk_0 Like there's a lot of people who had one hit on this.
spk_0 And we're not talking about them.
spk_0 Did anybody happen to see the Super Bowl?
spk_0 It was bigger than an entertainment story.
spk_0 Nickelgate.
spk_0 It was bigger than a sports story.
spk_0 I laughed and it stopped that went too far.
spk_0 This dominated newspapers, talk shows.
spk_0 I love giving you all something to talk about.
spk_0 This led to a senate hearing.
spk_0 This was a national scandal.
spk_0 Janet Jackson's soft chest part exposed by Justin Timberlake
spk_0 during the halftime show.
spk_0 Immediately following the wardrobe malfunction,
spk_0 stinging around the world, there is but one question.
spk_0 That everyone wants to know.
spk_0 She didn't know what was going to happen.
spk_0 So it came as a complete surprise to you.
spk_0 All we remember about Super Bowl 38 is Janet Jackson
spk_0 just flashed the world and it changed everything.
spk_0 We got to dig into the story.
spk_0 What did go wrong?
spk_0 What didn't go wrong?
spk_0 There are so many different stories.
spk_0 The real question is, was it planned?
spk_0 By the time of Super Bowl 38 in 2004,
spk_0 the United States is going through a cultural revolution
spk_0 and conservative views are dominating the landscape.
spk_0 This was a transitional time in media, in culture,
spk_0 shock jocks on radio.
spk_0 The two of you do pornos together, let's be in pornos.
spk_0 Vileance in video games, the emergence of the internet.
spk_0 So there was a lot of attention around what our kids are being exposed to.
spk_0 It's in this anxious environment that the NFL hires MTV
spk_0 to put together a groundbreaking halftime show
spk_0 for the biggest stage in the world.
spk_0 They bring Nelly, P. Diddy, Jessica Simpson, Kid Rock,
spk_0 but who's the headliner?
spk_0 Who's the big act we're all waiting for?
spk_0 Janet Jackson.
spk_0 And in that time, Janet Jackson is massive.
spk_0 Miss Janet Jackson!
spk_0 But Janet's 36 years old or so at this time.
spk_0 And that becomes a real challenge to continue to maintain your op-stardom
spk_0 into your mid to late 30s.
spk_0 So the plan is to give Miss Jackson a boost with a younger generation
spk_0 in the form of a surprise.
spk_0 As a secret special guest, they wanted to bring in Justin Timberlake.
spk_0 J.T. is also in need of a boost.
spk_0 For many, he's known more for his messy and very public breakup
spk_0 with fellow superstar Britney Spears.
spk_0 A year prior to this Super Bowl, Britney goes on MTV
spk_0 and kisses Madonna and the world explodes.
spk_0 Did it hurt you when it looked so good?
spk_0 Maybe Justin wants to see if he can make an even bigger splash
spk_0 and get people talking about him and Janet.
spk_0 The NFL and AOL proudly present the AOL Top Speed Super Bowl
spk_0 38 halftime show.
spk_0 With 90 seconds left in Janet Jackson's performance,
spk_0 Justin Timberlake makes his surprise appearance.
spk_0 He performed his then hit song Rock Your Body.
spk_0 He reaches over and pulls something off of her.
spk_0 The next hit song is the
spk_0 The Black Flash.
spk_0 Soon as that moment happened, pause.
spk_0 We sat there. We watched.
spk_0 Jaws hit the floor.
spk_0 The backlash was almost immediate.
spk_0 People were calling the FCC complaining saying,
spk_0 oh my god, why did you allow this on TV?
spk_0 Timberlake called it a wardrobe malfunction.
spk_0 Nobody remembers the game.
spk_0 But the talk the next morning is what happened
spk_0 with Janet Jackson and his wardrobe malfunction.
spk_0 Coming up, the question everyone wants to know.
spk_0 What happened that day?
spk_0 First of all, after that she was, was it planned?
spk_0 And later, does Led Zeppelin sell their souls to the devil?
spk_0 Jimmy Page would never deny it that he was always interested
spk_0 in the occult.
spk_0 During the halftime show of Super Bowl 38,
spk_0 Janet Jackson bears a breast,
spk_0 and the country loses its mind.
spk_0 Not only is it sort of a craft demonstration,
spk_0 it may be an illegal one.
spk_0 CBS is fined $550,000
spk_0 by the FCC.
spk_0 New regulations are applied to media outfits.
spk_0 But most of the anger goes in one direction.
spk_0 Miss Jackson.
spk_0 It was all of a sudden, Janet's, how could she?
spk_0 She was made to be the bad person
spk_0 when all she did was stand there,
spk_0 and she was the one that was exposed.
spk_0 They both issued apologies.
spk_0 Justin Timberlake went to CBS
spk_0 and gave a, you know, apparently tearful apology.
spk_0 And she didn't do that.
spk_0 Janet didn't go kiss the ring.
spk_0 She made the apology that she wanted to make.
spk_0 I am really sorry if I offended anyone
spk_0 that was truly not my intention.
spk_0 Despite the apology, Janet's new album,
spk_0 Demita Joe, underperforms.
spk_0 And she loses out on acting roles due to the backlash.
spk_0 Janet Jackson was supposed to play Lena Horne
spk_0 in the biopic and got fired from the film.
spk_0 She got blackbalt and no one stepped in for her.
spk_0 That is awful.
spk_0 And Justin rolled on untouched,
spk_0 and Janet was a punchline.
spk_0 I'm sure you guys are sick of hearing about it.
spk_0 I know I am.
spk_0 Let's ask her about something now.
spk_0 I'm not so sure they are sick of hearing about it.
spk_0 Two years after the incident,
spk_0 she finally comes clean to Oprah.
spk_0 Was it planned, Janet?
spk_0 No.
spk_0 Well, he was to take the piece off that he did.
spk_0 The letter piece.
spk_0 Right. But more came off than what was supposed to be.
spk_0 It was an accident.
spk_0 So does this end the debate?
spk_0 What we know is that there was an unannounced costume change
spk_0 outfit change in the last minute.
spk_0 Her stylists went out and bought the nipple shield
spk_0 that we all saw when this happened.
spk_0 We know that there were changes that were made,
spk_0 that nobody but Janet and presumably Justin knew about.
spk_0 I think both of them planned it together,
spk_0 but it was poorly planned.
spk_0 It just wasn't the best idea.
spk_0 Timberlake goes on to become one of Pop's biggest stars
spk_0 and the NFL invites him back to headline
spk_0 the Super Bowl in 2018.
spk_0 After a 2021 documentary about the incident,
spk_0 fans aim more of the blame on Justin.
spk_0 But Janet quickly comes to his defense.
spk_0 Everyone is looking for someone to blame
spk_0 and that's gotta stop.
spk_0 Justin and I are very good friends
spk_0 and we will always be very good friends.
spk_0 And he and I have moved on and it is time for everyone else to do the same.
spk_0 I think we've learned a lot in the past 20 years
spk_0 in regards to how men are treated and how women are treated,
spk_0 how white men are treated and how women are treated.
spk_0 And we could have done better,
spk_0 at least hold Justin just as accountable as Janet.
spk_0 We are here 20-something years later still speaking about it.
spk_0 It was literally half a second a boom that we saw on TV.
spk_0 Nobody else was hurt, truthfully, other than Janet.
spk_0 Mythology about soul-selling dates back to Robert Johnson and the Crossroads.
spk_0 And by the 70s, musicians dancing with the devil has hit the mainstream.
spk_0 Satan was an undertone in the music instrument
spk_0 and really selling a lot of records and putting bands on top.
spk_0 You have these great bands that were playing with evil.
spk_0 Fans like Black Sabbath, ACDC, Kiss, Van Halen.
spk_0 You know, you don't just run, you run with the devil.
spk_0 Of many of the 70s bands that got into the Satan bandwagon,
spk_0 Led Zeppelin took it to the next level.
spk_0 Led Zeppelin fans, they're following Led Zeppelin,
spk_0 they're really following Satan.
spk_0 It was Satan's music.
spk_0 They were kind of like flirting with Satan.
spk_0 Did Led Zeppelin sell their souls for rock and roll?
spk_0 There was no band bigger than Led Zeppelin
spk_0 and there was no guitar player or more influential person in rock and roll than Jimmy Page.
spk_0 From the beginning of his career, first with the yardbirds and then with Zeppelin,
spk_0 Jimmy Page is known as one of the greatest guitarists ever,
spk_0 but he's also known for his affinity towards Black magic.
spk_0 Jimmy Page was always interested in the occult.
spk_0 He hung out a lot with Kenneth Anger,
spk_0 who had a film called Lucifer Rising,
spk_0 and was obsessed with Alistair Crowley's beliefs and philosophies.
spk_0 Alistair Crowley, the most evil man in the world.
spk_0 Jimmy was collecting Alistair Crowley stuff.
spk_0 He wore his cloak, he bought his castle.
spk_0 Why would you buy Alistair Crowley's house if you were not going to perform some sort of Satanic ritual?
spk_0 So our Page and Zeppelin, really practicing Satanic rituals.
spk_0 Believers point to their fourth album as proof.
spk_0 If you look at those, there's four sigils.
spk_0 The sigils are very interesting magical symbols that you can combine them to either bless or curse somebody.
spk_0 The rumor mill hits a fevered pitch when people wonder whether or not the band embeds backwards messages in their hit song, stairway to heaven.
spk_0 And stairway to heaven, if you play it backwards, had Satanic messages behind it.
spk_0 Oh, he's in my place, Satan.
spk_0 Do y'all hear that?
spk_0 I don't know if they were putting messages in stairway to heaven,
spk_0 but Jimmy Page would never deny it.
spk_0 Maybe there's something there.
spk_0 Coming up, is the rumor true?
spk_0 And if this is real, what are the consequences for Led Zeppelin?
spk_0 A lot of people point to that as like, see Satan got his revenge on them.
spk_0 For most of his career, Jimmy Page deals with rumors that his fascination with the occult is more than curiosity.
spk_0 That he has in fact made a deal with the devil.
spk_0 Can it possibly be true?
spk_0 Jimmy Page was very tight-lived about his specific connection like he never mentioned, Satanism.
spk_0 I was very interested actually in Eastern and Western mysticism,
spk_0 and I spent time reading and researching when I was younger.
spk_0 He was just figuring stuff out, experimenting.
spk_0 It wasn't anything evil or wicked, and there was certainly no pact with the devil or any of that.
spk_0 Even though Page never admits it and his friends deny it, rumors persist,
spk_0 and conspiracy theorists point to the band's tragedies, including Robert Plans' son's death,
spk_0 and John Bonham's overdose, as evidence of their deal with the devil gone bad.
spk_0 A lot of people point to that as like, see Satan got his revenge on them.
spk_0 But if you say that, then I would say here are some other artists that made a deal with the devil.
spk_0 ACDC, Leonard Skinner, Def Leopard, there are a lot of bands that have had bad luck.
spk_0 Did they all make deals with the devil?
spk_0 I don't think any of these guys made a deal with the devil.
spk_0 Let's have one of great musicians that flirted with ideas that a lot of the mainstream are uncomfortable with,
spk_0 but you know, that's how you make an impact.
spk_0 The unlikely journey of a polarizing country song,
spk_0 an inexplicable moment that shocked the world,
spk_0 and a band's flirtation with Satanism.
spk_0 They're all music's greatest mysteries.
