spk_0 And then the week or sorry the meeting after that two weeks from then we'll be having a little watch party

spk_0 We'll be watching ghost stories. It'll be so much fun

spk_0 That's a little while from now though. The next meeting is at us on October 8th and we'll be discussing ajin

spk_0 But yeah, wait and Mason would you like to discuss what we have going on on the episode today?

spk_0 Yeah, it's gonna be a big doozy as it's that time of year again

spk_0 Surprisingly it always makes up on us, but we are doing our full anime selection. So

spk_0 We'll get into the specifics later, but we got a lot to talk about

spk_0 We're looking ahead into the next season and we'll see what our horoscope says. Is it gonna be good? Is it gonna be bad?

spk_0 It might be bad, but we'll see we'll see what happens when we get there

spk_0 That's the most pointless

spk_0 And then a review of the summer Hikaru died fitting with the uh the end of the season

spk_0 End of season one didn't talk about a show that I'm very excited to talk about

spk_0 And I also kind of spooky in some way so very very topical in many ways, but yes very indeed

spk_0 So we got a lot to get to are we ready for the news then let's do it

spk_0 I knew this it's time for big news of the week

spk_0 All right, I have a couple things here one small one the aforementioned the summer Hikaru died

spk_0 It just got announced a second season will be on the way

spk_0 Uh, I think they just announced this today actually so very very recent news. No news other than that

spk_0 No release date or anything like that, but it will be continuing and that's a good thing

spk_0 Uh, and a secondary piece of news

spk_0 Crunchyroll manga app will be launching in the US and Canada on October 9th for iOS and Android

spk_0 It just announced on Thursday that'll be launching a manga app

spk_0 Uh, and it'll be having a browser version as well on October 15th

spk_0 It'll be an ad free app and separate from the main Crunchyroll streaming service

spk_0 Now if this sounds kind of familiar Crunchyroll did have a manga service before

spk_0 And it ended in December 2023

spk_0 So hopefully this one sticks

spk_0 Um that one I think came with your Crunchyroll subscription like you paid for Crunchyroll and they're like hey

spk_0 Read some manga for us and you're like okay, but now they're taking away the feature

spk_0 Bringing it back and now making you pay for it separately

spk_0 Yeah, yeah, I mean it seems like it's I think they might have had

spk_0 A partnership with codoncha or something before and that just fell apart

spk_0 And this one it's just gonna be different with a different partnership maybe and like just different rules and regulations

spk_0 So therefore cannot be absolutely free with your membership

spk_0 But they will have hundreds of titles quote-unquote including one piece due to kaisen

spk_0 Diamonds of the shadow realm never heard of that before diamonds

spk_0 Okay, I don't say anything saying like if you're just a manga reader like you don't care about anime and you just want

spk_0 I don't see that as an option so I don't know if you need to have

spk_0 A crunch real typical account to get into this yeah, I wonder if there's like a five dollar

spk_0 Just manga reader tier, but I would think that if you're that person you're already subscribed to a much better

spk_0 Yeah, maybe we'll see I mean not ever I get the logistics of running a multi million dollar corporation

spk_0 Like crunch real is a little bit different than the podcast, but they can't be as stable and dependable

spk_0 It's really not news in the sense that it exists, but JoJo bizarre adventure part seven

spk_0 It's happening. It's coming out. It will be streaming on Netflix and the big question for me is is this going to be a weekly

spk_0 Release or the batch release that they've been doing for past JoJo's which is absolutely murdered it in terms of

spk_0 facilitating any sort of discourse or hype or discussion or longevity and

spk_0 Really if they go with the batch release, I think it's just kind of dooming the series again to

spk_0 Kind of a loop warm reaction as it did with part six

spk_0 so hopefully

spk_0 David production and the rest of the crew get a good showing from Netflix this time

spk_0 We did get a teaser trailer and honestly it looks like

spk_0 JoJo for all the good and bad it is because they kind of always look stiff and kind of puppety

spk_0 The horses do exist. They look fine. They're kind of CG kind of hand-drawn depending on the shot

spk_0 So honestly, this is one of the biggest manga adaptations

spk_0 It's been in the works for forever fans have long awaited it now that it's here my expectations are honestly a little touch low because

spk_0 I don't think Netflix has proven to be the right environment for the series

spk_0 But I look forward to be proven wrong hopefully and we get an absolute banger of a everything but as long as the OP is good

spk_0 That might be enough to save part seven so

spk_0 I assume not no worries then just know that uh you don't need to watch parts one through six the start here

spk_0 I know that sounds ludicrous it sounds even bizarre you might say but

spk_0 Just to give people a little background if they're unfamiliar with how we do things around here

spk_0 We have each selected some shows. I think about three shows each person

spk_0 and we are going to

spk_0 Talk about each one eventually as they come out a few episodes usually per show and

spk_0 Through those few episodes we are going to select the anime that will be given a full review when it's ready to go

spk_0 And so that all starts with today and us talking about what we have selected through

spk_0 Um a dice roll mason

spk_0 I think you can explain that process a little better than I can

spk_0 Yeah, so back in the day when we had three hosts things were now this competitive

spk_0 But right now we have eight hosts which means a lot to go with but essentially each host

spk_0 Makes their list of the shows they want to watch the most to the least

spk_0 And we roll the dice we roll a d20 and the

spk_0 Hosts like it better rolls get more of their favorite shows selected

spk_0 Folks like raggedy I think I did d20 so he got all the shows at the top of his list

spk_0 Uh, folks like pancake

spk_0 Let's just say she got a one

spk_0 So she got not very many of the shows at the top of her list

spk_0 But nonetheless we put all 21 shows into a big blender and we spit out the results

spk_0 So these are the 21 shows that we here on the pad cast will be watching the first couple episodes on

spk_0 And determining as curilan said are they worth a review or not

spk_0 After we pass six of them or less depending on how weak the season might be

spk_0 The last couple review slots go out to a listener choice vote where you get a chance to make your voice heard and force us to watch

spk_0 Either the best show that we missed out on or the worst show that you want to watch us suffer through

spk_0 Or some other variation however you want to vote so that's how it goes

spk_0 But now this is just us scouting ahead looking at the trailers looking at the synopsis trying to make a judgment call on

spk_0 Do we think the show might be good and

spk_0 Give you a heads up on it and because there's only two of us we're gonna keep on trading shows and figuring out

spk_0 How we go, but we're gonna start with number 21 aka the show that barely made the list the one least excited

spk_0 We were to watch it and what is that one curilan that would be a pick for me

spk_0 Uh, and it is called in expressive kashiwata and expressive otah

spk_0 Now I think I think people can kind of guess on like the type of show. This is uh

spk_0 Here's a synopsis

spk_0 Otah disregards his single digit test scores and searches for a new source of amusement

spk_0 He is soon calculated by his classmate kashiwata a mysterious student who consistently wears a blank face

spk_0 Otah inspires to break her placid demeanor and through scares and mischievous schemes

spk_0 Though his tactics seem to backfire he is known as a class clown and is consists constantly disciplined by his teacher

spk_0 To know fault of his own he lacks control of his emotions and facial expressions

spk_0 Kashiwata on the other hand seems perpetually emotionless and unreadable on no one knows what she's thinking

spk_0 They are complete opposites, but that will not stop a unique relationship from developing between them

spk_0 As they realize their feelings for each other. It raises an important question

spk_0 Do opposites really attract?

spk_0 Yeah, it's just one of those shows it might be cute. It might be a little bit fun

spk_0 I'm not expecting you know

spk_0 It to re-endant the wheel or anything

spk_0 It just feels a bit

spk_0 One note. I don't think it's gonna be much more than that

spk_0 Yeah, I can't see this one is turning a lot of heads. It kind of seems like we've seen stuff

spk_0 Done to this kind before it feels very combi can't communicate

spk_0 Ask but is likely not gonna have that same

spk_0 Visual budget behind it to really be a standout or is memorable or have his good as characters

spk_0 But that's judging a book completely by its cover and something that I discovered recently when I was watching all the trailers for the shows

spk_0 Is that YouTube has a new feature where they will

spk_0 When a the sound is like mostly in Japanese they will try to like dub it with AI. Oh god

spk_0 So I'm watching these trailers and I've complained about dubs in the past

spk_0 But these are some of the worst sounding dubs I've ever heard and I'm like why why why would they make this?

spk_0 It's like oh my goodness you are not making me feel very nice today

spk_0 I'm like what's going on? There's no way this is actually the show

spk_0 So make sure if you're watching these trailers you click on the little cog wheel and you change it from like

spk_0 English dub attempt to Japanese original because

spk_0 Otherwise, you'll be very confused like I was so

spk_0 This one it looks fine, but it looks like something that will be easily forgettable

spk_0 But who knows maybe we're just being a negative Nancy

spk_0 I would like to add a spoiler here. That's the vibe for like 99% of the shows that we picked

spk_0 Yeah, it's it's a rough-going season forgettable

spk_0 In any other season these all of these would be bottom of the list ticks

spk_0 But yeah, I don't know what you may think differently. I don't know what I really don't this

spk_0 Like when we were talking about what season was it that we said was like the worst season because it was like off the heels of a really decent one

spk_0 And then summer was really great was a spring or winter that was not good think it was spring

spk_0 Like that one had

spk_0 Little you know the midnight's would call them good choices, you know in our in our discord

spk_0 Just things that are niche that kind of hit a good vibe

spk_0 But are just not

spk_0 Star-studded

spk_0 That's fine none of these seem like that. So I'm hoping that they're

spk_0 They're I'm wrong and that there are some good things otherwise these are gonna be a pretty boring review season

spk_0 Is done by studio volne known for uscio and torus as well as taking over the recent entries and blue exercises from a one pictures

spk_0 this is a original story very reminiscent of

spk_0 Simphogare more so that than something like two b hero x but it's like a fusion of super heroes and idols

spk_0 and really this is

spk_0 Just kind of big space battles against CG entities where they're fighting with song and dance and it feels like it's just there to sell

spk_0 Whatever Sony music entertainment is trying to push it will be on crunchy roll and it just

spk_0 feels like one of those

spk_0 Very anime anime's you know you turn it on you see

spk_0 Real singing these big guns forming out of nowhere just very a lot of colorful entities on screen

spk_0 But really no

spk_0 Soul or character this trailer really did not do much to sell me on the fact that it will be anything other than just a big

spk_0 Bumbastic show

spk_0 and

spk_0 Yeah, see vis I

spk_0 I really don't know what to expect

spk_0 I think this is going to be for people who just want some maybe cool visuals to go with their music and

spk_0 That's that that's about it

spk_0 Yeah, maybe

spk_0 Wasn't necessarily gonna say the names of people because I think people could guess some of the ones later

spk_0 But yeah, maybe I guess especially because back in the day we made it so

spk_0 But now we kind of all watch the shows as a collective yeah, so it helps share the blame in some ways and it's make

spk_0 It's really fun to be like oh my goodness. I can't believe you picked this show and then you watch it

spk_0 However despite their constant bickering they develop a glint of mutual affection feelings had to not go unnoticed by their adorable robotic creation

spk_0 Now curious Alma starts to question the true nature of her creative relationship as she learns more about humanity and from those around her

spk_0 Alma's bonds with NG and Susie May only goes stronger so

spk_0 Looks like a found family

spk_0 Like you know surrogate daughter pushing together a couple

spk_0 Is this just spy family with Rubo on you? That's exactly what I was thinking

spk_0 But I don't know it could be cute

spk_0 I don't know doesn't really seem anything all that exciting

spk_0 Yeah a lot of banished from the hero's party stuff and not much else so

spk_0 That same vein and uh it all depends on Alma love the AI stuff

spk_0 Not the uh not the first and not the last show that we're gonna talk about with AI

spk_0 centric story points

spk_0 Next one we can get to is

spk_0 Called Wondance. This is done by madhouse and cyclone graphics

spk_0 based on a manga and it will be streaming on Disney plus and hulu

spk_0 According to the website that I'm currently on it follows this kid named

spk_0 Kaboku who is this shy stuttering kid who starts high school

spk_0 He's very self-conscious and he's trying to not draw much attention to himself

spk_0 Just keep his head down do your own thing

spk_0 Just don't make a scene and one day he sees this girl named Wanda dancing

spk_0 Hence Wanda dance Wanda Wanda that's the name of the show. Oh my goodness big uh big grain moment there

spk_0 But he sees her dancing and he's so inspired by her

spk_0 Out of going this her lack of care about how people see her that he is inspired to join the dance club

spk_0 And I'm like oh that could be kind of engaging and reads to me very much like a

spk_0 Dress up darling meets welcome to the ballroom where this outgoing exuberant lady kind of

spk_0 Pulls up this shy demirror boy by his bootstraps and let's him out into the world and breathe and that was kind of unfair to Wanda

spk_0 It's because with those

spk_0 Visual expectations in mind I watched the trailer and

spk_0 The second she opens her eyes. I was just blown away by how

spk_0 Not good it looks um

spk_0 The visuals range from stiff to plain and you have very fully CG dance sequences

spk_0 And I feel like this is a show for people who love watching those kpop dance videos where you just see the whole crew going off and it's really sick

spk_0 If you're not already thrilled by the concept of that. I don't know if there's much else to this show

spk_0 Who knows how the writing and characters and all that will be

spk_0 It could touch on

spk_0 Finding yourself and your voice in high school. Yeah. Yeah, we've seen that before

spk_0 But uh visually this did not give the strongest of impressions in its trailer

spk_0 So once again, that's one dance and I'll be watching it for sure because uh it was my pick

spk_0 Um here's the thing. I'm trying to find the next anime. I

spk_0 Looked it up and I could only find

spk_0 Something of that name from the 80s

spk_0 Yeah, so raggedy

spk_0 Went kind of off script with his d20 which is you know fair enough

spk_0 I think there is a

spk_0 So the original cat's eye is like a manga from many decades ago and I think making it like an o and a of it

spk_0 That actually started airing. It's gonna be 12 episodes long, but it's gonna be

spk_0 In the o and a section so it might not be on the my anime list

spk_0 typical thing so

spk_0 Raggedy like I said who went off the beaten path, but yeah, this is a new adaptation of the classic hats

spk_0 I manga that I've went on for so many years back in the 80s

spk_0 So I think he's just going with a nostalgia, but I have not seen

spk_0 The original cat's eye

spk_0 Anime from that time period, so I have no idea if this will be good or not expect sexy

spk_0 Spy kind of thing going on

spk_0 Well, I can't even find where it is on my anime list at all so unless it's just

spk_0 It's not on something

spk_0 cat I cannot

spk_0 2025 maybe put that at the end of it

spk_0 Either right doesn't matter that's that's what the show is

spk_0 Well, let me tell you this

spk_0 Right now the 2025 remake has a average score of like 50% on any list

spk_0 So it's not off to a great start it seems

spk_0 Yeah, I can't find it on Mel it's on Mel

spk_0 That's um

spk_0 There we go as probably not going to make the cut anyway

spk_0 We'll see if we can even fight on the line if you do want to watch it though

spk_0 It is on Disney plus and Hulu so find it there

spk_0 I think one thing we forgot to mention that I think people would be will be kind of surprised by is

spk_0 If if they are new around here is that we are not going to be discussing

spk_0 Any anime past its second season so if you're wondering where one punch man three is where spy family three is where my hero academia

spk_0 The final season is where to your eternity season three is

spk_0 We will not be discussing that on the regular show my here academia probably will be discussed at some point on shown and showdown

spk_0 Because that's like our spin-off show

spk_0 Maybe spy family. I don't know if that counts actually actually know it does it is

spk_0 Actually shown in and perhaps one punch man even though it's saying in

spk_0 Um, it might come up at that point too. Well, I feel like with what have we been watching for example

spk_0 Like I would yes, you're gonna stick with like two-year eternity and stuff like that

spk_0 Like people will be watching them their big name shows that we just figure

spk_0 Why bother reviewing them at this point people know about them have formed their opinions on them and don't need us

spk_0 Three seasons deep being like well actually the show is kind of similar to seasons one and two

spk_0 Like you get it by now

spk_0 Unless it's a huge comeback show

spk_0 Then really no need so that's why we do it, but who knows we'll see what happens and we might be desperate enough to season where we need to reach into that bucket of

spk_0 Reckless who knows

spk_0 Why is it that the only goods only the only good stuff are season three's and beyond is just so ridiculous

spk_0 I mean who knows if those are even good shows moving on let's go with the next show dusk beyond the end of the world

spk_0 This was a pancake pick. It's done by studio PA works and this is kind of a big old

spk_0 Word jumble salad of what's going on you got action romance sci-fi post-apocalyptic AI dystopian and

spk_0 Essentially this guy takes a bullet for his girlfriend in the midst of like this AI civil unrest going on

spk_0 And hundreds of years later after being like cryogenically frozen to recover

spk_0 He wakes up in this unfamiliar world, which is like a very isekai fantasy-esque medieval setting of

spk_0 Huts and low-tech thing, but there are still robots as evidence by the fact that he bonds with this android who

spk_0 Is an AI and kind of resembles his girlfriends

spk_0 So now he has to like navigate this technology infused post-apocalyptic

spk_0 low technology world like it's it feels like vivi for it i song

spk_0 But in like a isekai-esque setting

spk_0 It's it's just a lot. I really got no pickup of how the show is going to play off besides just maybe perhaps too many ideas

spk_0 in too small of a package and I

spk_0 I think it'll just be ambitious, but I think it might get too ahead of itself if I'm trying to read the tea leaves

spk_0 But dusk beyond the end of the world

spk_0 It might be interesting and we'll be watching it. So we'll see how that goes

spk_0 All right next up it's tojima tonsaburo wants to be a masked writer or actually

spk_0 I think the other translation is tojima wants to be a common writer which make probably makes a little bit more sense

spk_0 Tojima tonsabros has

spk_0 Spent his entire life chasing a dream to become common writer now at 40

spk_0 Reality has nearly caught up to him and he's on the verge of letting go his childhood fantasy

spk_0 That is until he gets caught up in a crime wave led by the fake shocker gang

spk_0 Turning his longtime dream into something far more dangerous

spk_0 What starts as a pretend hero's journey quickly becomes something real the ultimate common writer fantasy is about to begin

spk_0 Do you know anything about common writer because it's a familiar name. I don't know anything about it though

spk_0 It's your super sentai

spk_0 Japanese hero

spk_0 Kind of the landmark figure of that it's no surprise Andrew picked this one. He's our

spk_0 expert in this field and

spk_0 That style really doesn't excite me and I don't know enough common writer to really

spk_0 Get those references if there are there

spk_0 But that's not to say that shows that lean into that archetype such as SSS grid man or dynasinon couldn't

spk_0 Still yield a great product

spk_0 So not my jam not my style of music, but if it plays a good tune, I'm gonna listen. I mean the promo art kind of looks good

spk_0 Like a bit retro looking, but I haven't looked at the the the PV so I'm sure yeah

spk_0 Yeah, I don't know I mean it could be something fun

spk_0 Um, yeah remains to be seen

spk_0 What's next? Yeah next up is as obvious as that last pick was an Andrew pick

spk_0 And it looks fairly decent. It's definitely one of the better shows this season from just on the outset

spk_0 Caring over Yano this boy who comes school constantly covered in scratches and bruises and bumps

spk_0 And it's just a romantic comedy between this anxious girl and a boy who's always injured

spk_0 And it just looks so gosh darn adorable and I think if you're into these

spk_0 High school rom coms like skipping low for like insomnia insomnia x after school

spk_0 I think there might be like a lot to like here

spk_0 Obviously it all comes onto the characters how endearing they are how

spk_0 Much they speak to your soul, but yano koon's ordinary days

spk_0 It's got me it's got me hoping it's got me hoping it's gonna be better than ordinary. I don't know if it will be

spk_0 The optimism. I'm I'm I'm saving it all for a couple shows here on the back end and

spk_0 Fuyumura is seriously questioning if sanda is actually this descendant of a certain family

spk_0 Just be careful with it.

spk_0 You know, there's a lot of dare types out there as Carolina alluded to,

spk_0 and you don't want to misdere someone.

spk_0 That's a bad deed, and that's grievous offense in an anime community.

spk_0 But that's enough about dareys.

spk_0 Let's move on to the big dog review, the summer that Hikaru died.

spk_0 Anyone take it away?

spk_0 All right, summer of Hikaru died is available for viewing on Netflix.

spk_0 It is about two best friends living in a rural Japanese village named Yoshiki and Hikaru.

spk_0 Growing up together, they were inseparable.

spk_0 Until the day, Hikaru came back from the mountains and was no longer himself.

spk_0 Something has taken over his body.

spk_0 It's directed by Riohei Takashita, and done by Studio-Sai Games Pictures based on a manga.

spk_0 So Mason, what were you expecting going into this?

spk_0 This was my number one pick.

spk_0 Number one on my list for the summer 2025 selections.

spk_0 We did all those months ago, and I just kind of felt like I was going to vibe with it.

spk_0 I had never read the manga, but I had heard about it before.

spk_0 And it just seemed like something that had potential.

spk_0 After watching episode one, when we did our impressions,

spk_0 I knew this was an instant pass for me.

spk_0 It felt so tastefully artistic, but silly enough with some great gags,

spk_0 the sound, the digetic music, just the juxtaposition between the world and the life within it,

spk_0 and the decay that simultaneously went with it.

spk_0 It just felt so solid, and I was so hyped for more.

spk_0 And I'm glad that I finally got around to watching it,

spk_0 and that I get to be on this review, because I am excited.

spk_0 And that's how I felt going into this thing.

spk_0 Yeah.

spk_0 Yeah, I think I also had this at the top of my list for this season.

spk_0 It definitely looked like a good show, and I really liked

spk_0 summertime rendering, which kind of has a similar type premise,

spk_0 and a similar vibe, similar genre.

spk_0 And summertime rendering was a fun show.

spk_0 It was not a great show.

spk_0 Did not stick the landing.

spk_0 And I was ready for this one to stick the landing.

spk_0 So I was excited to get into it.

spk_0 And I'm a little disappointed that there are not that many people on this review.

spk_0 That's fine.

spk_0 Well, why do you need them?

spk_0 Our opinions are the only ones that matter, Caroline.

spk_0 Oh, screw you, Brianna Mae, Fanatics.

spk_0 They don't need anyone's opinions.

spk_0 That's only us.

spk_0 You only need us, folks.

spk_0 But yeah, you're bringing up of summertime render.

spk_0 Definitely is a good direct correlation in a lot of ways.

spk_0 Yeah, Mason, you want to take away for the spoiler-free recommendation?

spk_0 I would definitely recommend the summer that he grew dyed.

spk_0 Now, it's not going to be quite as fun and full of action and fast in a lot of ways as summertime

spk_0 render.

spk_0 This is a much slower show that is all about interpersonal relationships,

spk_0 struggling with decisions, and the pendulum of choice going back and forth of should I

spk_0 should not die.

spk_0 There's a little more romantic expressions.

spk_0 It's a lot more people just talking.

spk_0 And while it shows signs of, oh, there's going to be a big detective thing or a big monster hunter.

spk_0 This thing is going to get your blood boiling.

spk_0 It's really not about that.

spk_0 So if you're coming expecting for that big popcorn-munching summertime fest,

spk_0 this isn't going to deliver it.

spk_0 But I thought it was very well executed, extremely well-directed.

spk_0 And just was an interesting ride, even though I didn't know what was going up until

spk_0 the very end, as Carolina alluded to, season two did get announced.

spk_0 This does kind of leave off on a good enough point where,

spk_0 while it does leave a lot of questions unanswered,

spk_0 it's pretty satisfying.

spk_0 So I'd say, yeah, if you want to give it a shot, watch it now.

spk_0 It's a good time.

spk_0 It's a good show.

spk_0 What do you got?

spk_0 Yeah.

spk_0 Yeah, so I definitely would recommend this as well.

spk_0 I thought the first half was especially good,

spk_0 because it allows for a lot of interterm oil moments in the first half.

spk_0 It's sufficiently creepy.

spk_0 The music is good.

spk_0 It looks pretty good.

spk_0 The premise is interesting.

spk_0 There are a couple things that I didn't love

spk_0 that we can get into in the spoiler section.

spk_0 But if you haven't seen it yet and you are considering it,

spk_0 this anime is spooky and eerie enough to be good for October.

spk_0 So I think this is the perfect time of year to get into it.

spk_0 Season two is announced.

spk_0 You know it's continuing.

spk_0 So either you can wait for that to happen,

spk_0 which could take a year or two,

spk_0 or enjoy it for your spooky season viewing.

spk_0 And with that being said, I think we are ready to head into spoilers.

spk_0 Wouldn't you say Mason?

spk_0 I'd say so.

spk_0 Spoilers are coming.

spk_0 All right.

spk_0 Yeah, so this show is kind of interesting,

spk_0 and that the vibes work both for, as you said,

spk_0 spooky time October and summer.

spk_0 Like it is very much takes place in the summer,

spk_0 the watermelon, the fireworks,

spk_0 so things we often see in the summertime anime.

spk_0 But also just with enough spookiness and

spk_0 the decline of summer to feel their autumnal in so many ways.

spk_0 And it just strikes that balance very nicely, I thought.

spk_0 Is it like, I just kind of thought about it.

spk_0 I guess spooky time in Japan is more summer than fall.

spk_0 You don't have time to be scared when you're back in school.

spk_0 So summer is when you got to get all your fun out.

spk_0 And that's where all the scary stuff happens, I guess.

spk_0 I don't know.

spk_0 Well, the entirety of the season occurs in the last month or so of school for them

spk_0 for before summer's time.

spk_0 Yeah, yeah.

spk_0 But I'm just being silly.

spk_0 Yeah, so this show I think started off very good,

spk_0 kind of lost me along the middle,

spk_0 but definitely brought it together by the end.

spk_0 But one thing I did like is,

spk_0 as the show itself spoils in the title,

spk_0 Hikaru has died.

spk_0 And our main character, Yoshiki,

spk_0 like recognizes that he's been replaced by some other entity kind of

spk_0 puppeting his body.

spk_0 The very first conversation, episode one,

spk_0 like that easily could have been a promise neverland

spk_0 ask end of episode one ending reveal or everyone's like,

spk_0 yes, Hikaru, exactly.

spk_0 So it's Hikaru and that the very guy is like,

spk_0 I died.

spk_0 Do do do do do do.

spk_0 Like, no, like, it doesn't waste any time

spk_0 about making you solve a mystery or do this cat and mouse game.

spk_0 It's just, it invites you as the audience to be like,

spk_0 hey, there's a secret.

spk_0 This isn't Hikaru.

spk_0 And you have to help keep that secret.

spk_0 So you're kind of like part of their little,

spk_0 you know, duo as this person like,

spk_0 how do I feel about the fact that Hikaru is not Hikaru?

spk_0 I haven't even met real Hikaru.

spk_0 And already I'm just like caught up in their little

spk_0 deceit and I thought that was really interesting.

spk_0 Yeah, like you said earlier that it's not as fast as summertime rendering.

spk_0 But I kind of disagree with that because I think a lot that happens in the first few episodes

spk_0 of this show could have taken up the whole season, you know?

spk_0 Like they they definitely like not in a bad way.

spk_0 They it's not like it feels too fast like where they're pacing it too much.

spk_0 It's just that they're hitting a lot of the points.

spk_0 That you want them to hit and they're hitting it without drawing it out or like making you

spk_0 you like take your time with it because these are obvious things that would go through a person's

spk_0 mind the minute that they realize that their best friend is dead and possessed by something

spk_0 possibly dangerous.

spk_0 And it's not linear, which makes it that's what makes it really good is that it's not a slow

spk_0 coming to terms with the truth of the matter.

spk_0 But it's it's Yoshi ki going back and forth between accepting and then mourning and then having

spk_0 to act like nothing's wrong and then seeing his best friend and he's almost his best friend,

spk_0 but not really.

spk_0 And then going back into acceptance and then fear and then mourning again.

spk_0 And it's like a cyclical thing for the for the first few episodes, which some people

spk_0 might think is I feel like some people may think that it's too much depending on your tastes.

spk_0 But for me, they kept it interesting with a large amount of symbolism and different situations

spk_0 that they find themselves in that makes him rethink his his opinion on the matter.

spk_0 And it's really interesting.

spk_0 Yeah, so for those who haven't seen it, there's essentially two concurrent

spk_0 things going on.

spk_0 One, as Karylian mentioned, is the Yoshi ki our main character bangs over his eyes,

spk_0 kind of selling and hidden from the world, trying to come to grips with the death of his friend,

spk_0 but his friend is still living in so many ways.

spk_0 And the show deals with those themes of living and the boundaries of yourself,

spk_0 what makes you you, is it your memories, is it the fact that you've experienced these things.

spk_0 And how do you move on from someone who has died when they are right there with you?

spk_0 And next to you and laughing with you.

spk_0 And that's a very interesting thing.

spk_0 And he, as Karylian said, pendulums between this is a monster.

spk_0 I need to kill him and stab him through the heart and, you know,

spk_0 end this person's life, this creature's life.

spk_0 And I'm going to say with this person because I still like who they are in so many ways.

spk_0 And that's, it kind of goes back and forth on what he does and has to figure it out.

spk_0 But on the side thing, they are as a collective trying to figure out the mysterious happenings.

spk_0 Afflicting the town and the towns around them.

spk_0 And curses, the lovellant gods, evil spirits, that kind of thing.

spk_0 So there's really these two things that progress onwards.

spk_0 And really by the end of the season, we're kind of where we started.

spk_0 Like they are getting close to maybe figuring out these mysteries,

spk_0 but they haven't got there.

spk_0 And the hikaru hasn't died again.

spk_0 And still is existing by being controlled by this creature with Yoshiki.

spk_0 And they're like kind of more committed to their friendship, relationship,

spk_0 more than ever.

spk_0 So it's a very unique duality of what's going on.

spk_0 And it's just, it's slow in that you don't make a lot of progress.

spk_0 But there's a lot of inner emotional progress being made.

spk_0 And that's where I think.

spk_0 Yeah, there's no like physical representation of their progress.

spk_0 But by a character standpoint, there is progress.

spk_0 So, um, skip.

spk_0 One thing that some people might pick up on in the first couple episodes is that there's

spk_0 a little bit of, you know, an insinuation going on here that Yoshiki and Hikaru,

spk_0 their relationship might be a little bit more than just friendship,

spk_0 released like in their minds possibly.

spk_0 I was expecting them to just keep it vague like that.

spk_0 But to my surprise, they actually do kind of spell it out for you by the midpoint of the show,

spk_0 which is, is good.

spk_0 I would say a lot of this show is very not repetitive, but heavy-handed in how it expresses things.

spk_0 Like it makes, it makes sure that you understand they are in a very sexual relationship in some ways.

spk_0 They feel this and like characters very much have to spell out how they are feeling.

spk_0 And it feels a little like, okay, I'm out of child.

spk_0 I get the metaphors and the references and all the good symbolism.

spk_0 But it doesn't hurt that you make sure people understand and follow along what's going on.

spk_0 But yeah, it's very boys love homoerotic and in a very good way, like a very well-presented way.

spk_0 I would say.

spk_0 Yeah, the problem is that if they don't spell it out, then it is, it does feel like just boys love.

spk_0 Like not boys love.

spk_0 I can't remember, I can't tell what the specific decorations are.

spk_0 Yeah, like they're giving off that, you know, that insinuation, but they're not

spk_0 following through on it.

spk_0 Like they're still not in a relationship kind of.

spk_0 It's one of those things for like-

spk_0 But at least with this, they outright say it.

spk_0 They're not just fooling around to get people like, ooo, uh, kind of thing.

spk_0 It's the kind of show where they don't kiss or present love in a more typical way,

spk_0 but like you have him like feeling up the insides of him as he's like,

spk_0 I'm-

spk_0 That was-

spk_0 And I'm coming, like it's very-

spk_0 That's- that's where it lost me.

spk_0 Listen.

spk_0 That's where I got weird.

spk_0 When you're making a love to an older man.

spk_0 Making his head into his body, feeling around on his insides and making it a sexual thing.

spk_0 Like if you want to-

spk_0 It's just-

spk_0 That was-

spk_0 That was- you knew.

spk_0 I like how they did it.

spk_0 It was interesting and made you think about how it might be to be in that sort of-

spk_0 It was good.

spk_0 And how they treated the,

spk_0 quote unquote, disease of being homosexual in the small town and like kind of going against the grain.

spk_0 Like it just- it felt very grounded.

spk_0 And it was a relationship that wasn't,

spk_0 oh, let's make them gay because

spk_0 that'll be cool.

spk_0 Like it's very vital to how they are, how they treat each other, how their story progresses.

spk_0 Like it was-

spk_0 The way that it was-

spk_0 And it didn't feel like tacked on or artificial.

spk_0 It felt like their feelings were genuine.

spk_0 And we don't get that in a lot of-

spk_0 A lot of relationships and anime.

spk_0 So for it to be so well done on top of all the stellar directing,

spk_0 the symbolism that you mentioned from the-

spk_0 The red lights of

spk_0 police cars or scanners or train crossing lights to the spider webs,

spk_0 cicadas and darders of nature.

spk_0 Like the-

spk_0 The show was just rich in so many ways that they presented the world.

spk_0 And so many anime looks good for episode one,

spk_0 but they just fall into the typical-

spk_0 Or blase.

spk_0 And I felt like every week or every episode, I should say,

spk_0 this anime just continued to try and gave a damn and presented engaging,

spk_0 well realized, well utilized ways of showing the world,

spk_0 whether it be use of shadow, whether it be use of POB,

spk_0 whether it be use of CG, which was, you know, mostly decently done.

spk_0 And it just looked and all together.

spk_0 They had real world like camera usage in there and some of their trips.

spk_0 They changed the ED when he got his head locked off.

spk_0 Like it did so many little things.

spk_0 I was just like, ah, I enjoy watching this show,

spk_0 even if it got a little repetitive in the midsection of,

spk_0 oh, we got to talk to this person about the mystery.

spk_0 Oh, we actually got to talk to this person about the mystery.

spk_0 Actually, I got to talk to my dad about the mystery.

spk_0 Like-

spk_0 Yeah.

spk_0 It- it- I don't know if I wanted more or less of that,

spk_0 but I was the presentation did enough to keep me engaged the whole time.

spk_0 Yeah, that actually reminded me of something I forgot to write down,

spk_0 is that there are some moments here that just scream,

spk_0 well, that was convenient.

spk_0 You know, like, oh, this man mentioned something, like, like,

spk_0 Hikaru's grandpa.

spk_0 Like, he mentioned something about their lore, their family lore,

spk_0 and Hikaru responds with something, like a question mark,

spk_0 but he should- he should definitely know what this means.

spk_0 He's been told about this.

spk_0 And then grandpa's, like, instead of acting a little strangely,

spk_0 like, oh, Hikaru, why are you acting like you don't know this?

spk_0 We literally tell you this all the time.

spk_0 He falls asleep while sitting while he's taking off his shoes after work.

spk_0 I'm like, that was convenient.

spk_0 And then the granddaddy of the conveniences is Hikaru's memory,

spk_0 because he has a biological, like, biographical, sorry,

spk_0 memory of moments of Hikaru's life, of loving watermelon,

spk_0 of everything that he did with Yoshi-Ki-S kids,

spk_0 with all the names of his family members, all the names of his friends, etc.

spk_0 And yet, he conveniently doesn't remember anything about the family lore,

spk_0 conveniently doesn't remember anything about taking over Hikaru's body,

spk_0 conveniently. He remembers some of these things,

spk_0 eventually, when it's convenient, and then some things he doesn't remember,

spk_0 because that's not convenient. And then eventually, he kind of does remember them.

spk_0 So it's obvious that the whole gaining back memories thing,

spk_0 and the memories that he does remember are purely to serve the plot and help it move

spk_0 along when they wanted to.

spk_0 Exactly. Like, it's one of those things where, yes, they could make an argument.

spk_0 Like, oh, things tied to the mysticism might have been,

spk_0 outside their purview of the memories, but like, it'd be like if the murder weapon was in the

spk_0 backyard, and they're like, oh, the shed, oh yeah, where I hit all the bodies, oh, it was

spk_0 there the whole time, and I just forgot the most important thing about my family,

spk_0 and everything that's been working to for the past couple generations.

spk_0 Oopsies, yeah, it's a little, like you said,

spk_0 convenient in a way that just makes the plot feel like a more drawn out mystery than what it needed

spk_0 to be. But at the end of the day, the show was not about that mystery. Like, it's there,

spk_0 it's exciting. I want to see where it goes. I could see season two kind of picking up the

spk_0 the stakes as they have to actually figure out how to solve and deal with the mystery.

spk_0 Like, when season two comes out, I'm definitely going to be watching it. But there were just

spk_0 enough moments, whether it be the the waffling of Yoshiki or Hikaru's memory to solve the thing

spk_0 that were irritating me enough where I'm just like, yeah, this I could have done it a little

spk_0 bit better, but it's more slight edits or notes more than, oh, this needs to completely be rewritten.

spk_0 I think the show had a lot going for it. Yeah, across the board. Yeah, like the mystery is

spk_0 interesting. Like, you'll learn that this village is quite has quite a dark history.

spk_0 And then conveniently, the villages make a shape of a human body and they drop off human body

spk_0 pieces in the conveniently placed locations of these villages. Like the right hand goes where the

spk_0 right handed village is and that kind of thing. Yeah, but there's a whole spoiler section.

spk_0 Like the the monsters. It looks creepy. The monsters were all like

spk_0 head related because of where they were located on the map. I mean, I think the most viscerally

spk_0 grew some thing. I've probably ever seen depicted in a very abstract way in anime, which is this

spk_0 guy who shows up new to a high school. Just like chance out and like,

spk_0 chops his neck. That's brutal. Like kids are washing that. That's a real thing. Like, yeah,

spk_0 and that's not a ghost. I totally know. It just like, it just happened and they just kind of like,

spk_0 they're like, oh, yeah, that was messed up. That was weird. It was kind of weird on how quickly

spk_0 it was like, unaffected. Kids were kind of okay by it. I totally forgot about it. That's kind of

spk_0 an issue that you kind of forget about something major. Yeah. So why did it happen? I mean,

spk_0 I got this. It's like it's all going back to monsters and stuff. But it was. But that what,

spk_0 like they do they do the horror much better than most shows. Yeah. And instead of a it doesn't feel

spk_0 like a scary show. Like I feel like if you're not really too worried, you could watch it and be kind

spk_0 of okay, but it does do it just enough to be like, yeah, this is this was horror done about as well

spk_0 as you get and animate these days. Like the one ghost when they're going through the forest

spk_0 with like the giraffe long neck and it's swinging back and forth as they're walking through the

spk_0 forest like, it feels almost like a pasta stories at time, but they're just well animated and just

spk_0 short enough. Like they don't overstate their welcome. I think a lot of scary movies or anime or

spk_0 they want to keep the scary stuff on screen because that's what you're here for. But that's where

spk_0 you are around that. If you see that scary giraffe looking monster for long enough, it doesn't

spk_0 sound creepy when I say it, but it is freaking creepy. It also helps that the sound effects, the editing,

spk_0 just the general presentation was razor sharp, impactful and it was just a generally well done show.

spk_0 Good production. Just yeah, just the opening for Netflix is like like produced by Netflix or

spk_0 whatever it says like that opening thing and it's there's nothing visually interesting about it,

spk_0 but the sound effects are so wet and gross and it keeps like you're it's like the sound that they

spk_0 would put like when you're like when Yoshi ki puts his hand through he careers body and they make

spk_0 it so freaking gross. That's the sound that they kind of use and it's yeah and they do it at the

spk_0 beginning of every episode. Yes, that's it, that's it. So getting back to like the whole like town

spk_0 lore stuff like it's an interest it's interesting lore. It's creepy, it's dark. It was a bit confusing to

spk_0 me that might just be a me thing. It just felt like I should be writing down notes like Yoshi ki is

spk_0 throughout and I don't know if that's a good thing to some people or but it didn't it felt like I

spk_0 wasn't completely understanding what was going on and who they were talking to and why would they

spk_0 know this and how does one thought lead to the next thought kind of thing? I was kind of missing that.

spk_0 And that's why I kind of don't love the second half as much as the first. It did it felt a little bit

spk_0 the first to felt consistently good. The second half felt a little bit more jagged to me. Yeah, it

spk_0 doesn't help that the the mystery as you said starts getting bigger it starts going about all these

spk_0 towns that are interrelated and all these characters within the town that might have a role to play

spk_0 but we really don't spend a ton of time with them getting their stories, getting their personalities

spk_0 they're all kind of on the fringe like they say oh there's a town off to the right that they

spk_0 found someone's arm but like that's not really enough to cement it in my memory when they bring it

spk_0 up two episodes later it feels all kind of abstract and disconnected and maybe speaking Japanese

spk_0 would have gone a long way in helping to nail down those concepts but it was a little bit getting

spk_0 ahead of itself. Yeah. And

spk_0 something that they weren't getting ahead of enough in my opinion was Tanaka the

spk_0 investigator and I had to look up his name because literally they I don't bet I cannot remember his name

spk_0 and that's the problem because he didn't feel like he wasn't there enough to feel like a real

spk_0 memorable character even though he's supposed to be kind of a none I wouldn't say like specifically

spk_0 and antagonist but antagonist to what's his face Hikaru. Like he's supposed to be the one trying to

spk_0 figure out what's going on he's a possible threat and I think he becomes a much greater threat as it

spk_0 goes on but he's barely there and when he is there they're talking about things you don't understand

spk_0 yet and you're not around them enough to kind of piece it together yourself so it's just forgettable

spk_0 and I still don't know what his deal is and he kind of disappears for episodes at a time.

spk_0 So I feel like the mystery is going to take the forefront of this in season two and I feel like

spk_0 Tanaka will kind of be the inciting factor for making that next step but the issue is he was

spk_0 introduced like episode one like he's brought in so early and you're like oh this is the guy that's

spk_0 gonna be the wild card well how is he gonna react? This is plot B this is the B plot he's not the

spk_0 like they bring him in and then he pops in every now and then you're like oh yeah the word hamster

spk_0 toading detective guy is here when is that gonna happen? The high school chorus concert is the B plot.

spk_0 Yeah exactly so we have characters like Tanaka or Rie the house wife who kind of has that

spk_0 spiritual detecting essence to her. She's barely there and they they kind of dabble with them a bit

spk_0 we get a little bit more with Rie but it just feels like oh right right the house wife yes I miss

spk_0 yeah I got her mixed up with his assistant nevermind. Yeah no I actually I really liked her

spk_0 mm-hmm like even though she wasn't in a ton I can see her purpose and I'm glad that there's a character

spk_0 kind of bridging a gap for Yoshiki and Hikaru here in this story. Yeah it just feels like we're

spk_0 bringing in these characters who might be antagonists and they haven't really filled that role

spk_0 so the only antagonist left we have are these creatures these spirits but they're really

spk_0 we haven't got any answers on them yet we just kind of know oh because Hikaru exists in this town

spk_0 he's kind of acting like a lightning rod bringing in these negative impurities into the world

spk_0 but that's really as far as we've gotten with it like we really need more of those answers to

spk_0 justify why this has all happened and while I don't really need that answer to get the fulfillment

spk_0 from their relationship or the emotional side of things that the show did so well it still is the

spk_0 big hanging thread that's like okay what about everything else going on so it just feels like

spk_0 I want to watch season two now please thank you very much why is it not in my in front of my

spk_0 eyeballs right this second so I don't know it feels like a weird shudder review because it's very

spk_0 vibe based it looks great but has so many hanging threads in the supernatural department that I'm

spk_0 kind of like I wasn't a waste of time I'm glad I watched it good ideas good presentation but

spk_0 I don't know how to feel this could have been it this should have been a two core show yeah I mean

spk_0 it's shredded on the summertime render but we know how that worked out not so great in the second half

spk_0 so I want to know what the second half is like yeah I did not have enough time to in my note

spk_0 taking process to write down specific pros I had about the show if I sound negative it's just

spk_0 because it's far easier to remember the stuff you didn't like than the stuff that you did when

spk_0 it's a fairly decent show um but believe me it's it's a good show and I have and I probably do have

spk_0 more to save and nothing that I wrote down that I can remember off the top yeah that worries I mean

spk_0 the show literally finished up today so this was like a last second we woke up the morning I was

spk_0 watching it right before I started my show prep yeah the hour before we started to have the addicts

spk_0 and guess what no huge spoilers but the big finale episode the one that's gonna wrap up

spk_0 all these answers really just consisted of two dudes talking at the beach letting each other know

spk_0 how they feel some super slick abstract animation when they fell in the water acutely adorable

spk_0 inflatable salamander like that's what the big finale was it felt very almost show shaman

spk_0 ask of just your hair forwarded the discussion and dialogue and the mystery is a nice bonus

spk_0 but to me this just didn't hit those show shaman highs and I just wanted to see more characters like

spk_0 I'm I'm so torn on this show yeah I want more of us a co and her ability because she was so cool

spk_0 and like she just she she could see ghosts or hear the ghosts or something and that these ghosts

spk_0 help like help her avoid danger mm-hmm like they tell her when the train is coming so they she

spk_0 stops before the train like that's cool that could be a whole show and then her ear gets busted

spk_0 and I don't know if that means she can't I don't know if she can sense these things anymore

spk_0 and I need to know the answer to that yeah there's just there's a lot left to uncover

spk_0 I feel like I'm going to give this show a touch of a lower score than I might if this was a stand

spk_0 alone and I'll just need to wait to see how season two comes together mm-hmm it feels almost in

spk_0 a lot of a way it's not quite the same but I'll rock you go shingy we're season one edited with

spk_0 kind of a not a wet blanket but an ending that you're like really that's you wanted more from that

spk_0 but then season two tells you like oh you thought season one was the ending you dumb loser that was

spk_0 a all a I'm not gonna spoil anything but like season two retroactively ramped up season one's

spk_0 quality not that season one of this needs to be ramped up but I think it could be I feel like

spk_0 this is just show you just experience it's a lot of vibes a lot of talking but if you're down

spk_0 for that there's a lot to like here so I think I'm ready to score it yeah me too I think you should

spk_0 go first oof oof okay um hmm I thought the show did a lot good and just enough that I wouldn't say

spk_0 it was bad but enough that I'm like hesitant on really ramping it up I'm gonna give you're the

spk_0 summer he grew died three and a half hamsters out of five but know that this could easily go up

spk_0 to a four with a season two that met the same quality and kind of closed up some of the end so

spk_0 I'm giving it a very strong three and a half almost a four yeah I went a little bit back and forth

spk_0 on this because while I did love the first half the second half just didn't hit the same highs

spk_0 at the first half did for me however it was a very good show very interesting hit the spooky vibes

spk_0 when away that and they have trouble doing absolutely so I I'm going to give this show for

spk_0 draft neck to ghost swinging back and for the walk through the four is set of five good I'm glad

spk_0 you gave it that because similar to you the first definitely four episodes I'm like this is

spk_0 easy for easy for material easy it definitely no doubt about it and then as it went on it just

spk_0 was less of a four until the night where I'm like I did some of that so yeah well give this

spk_0 it'll average out to a four because it'll round up and the summer he grew a good show check it out

spk_0 people it's a worth your time worth the watch and that's it we did the episode all right we made

spk_0 it to the end of this kind of sputtering boat that I am driving right now we're here we made it

spk_0 it won the poll pretty decisively if i might if i might add so people wanted it and people also wanted

spk_0 the review next week to be hero x uh that'll be with me in raggedy because nobody else wanted to review

spk_0 it i guess but honestly guys you're all missing out because it's a fucking good show and you can

spk_0 write that down and put it in your book because people say it does not good but it is good so watch
