Well, I think we all were kind of in a rush in a whirlwind to finish this book.

We, I think we all kind of had a similar experience.

I've just been in a very poor book club, like bad.

I think I've just had so many books I want to read, but then books that like I need to

read and then not a lot of time to sit down and read.

And so I've been doing a lot of books at disservice with this lump I'd been in in my schedule.

So yeah, but if you're new here for book club episodes, the way we kind of do things is

we start off with our overall rating of the book and share our thoughts, our loves,
spk_0
our dislikes.

And then we like to share a fan cast because you know, things are starting to get picked

up and we love seeing the adaptations.

So it's kind of fun to see who we picture the characters as.

And I'm specifically really excited for this one because we had so many main characters.

Yep, we got to know so well.

So minor rather unhinged.

It was based on things I was currently watching at the time.

The first thing that popped in my head was just what I kept.

And it's like mixed mediums.

Some people are like animated characters.

Some people are real people.

So anyhow, let's get into the reviews.

I do not want to go first because I still am excited.

I'm just going to say I really struggled for like the first 130 pages pretty much until

the first trial started.

It was really hard to get into.

I feel like where this book had an issue for me was the pacing.

The pacing of it was just really.

I think it's hard to have good pacing when you're dealing with seven characters.

And so like I really I really enjoyed the characters, but I almost thought I would

like it more because it has so many characters.

I feel like I liked it less because there were so many characters.

And so I think I'm going to give it three, maybe 3.5.

I haven't like decided yet because the ending was really great.

I loved how like everything was like it just I feel like it could have gotten to things

a lot sooner.

But I guess I understand that when there's seven characters involved, you got to involve

every single one of them in a chapter.

And so I don't know.

It was it was definitely I give her credits because that would be a really difficult thing

to attack with having seven different point of views.

I feel like I really have only seen that when you're already deep into a series.

You've already had the characters that made like four, three, you know, their backstory.

So I definitely want to give her credits for doing that.

And I think she did a really good buy.

I feel like that's it's just really hard to really solidify a story and solidify the

pacing and plot when you're just jumping into all these characters.

So well, also it's how many pages it's really not that many pages to have.

One, two, three, four literally like seven point of views.

Or I guess six.

And it's not even 500 pages.

Kind of just wish it was consecutive.

The trials were a little bit more consecutive.

The pacing of that definitely felt a little weird to me too.

Because it was like a trial and it was like, and then oh, we got away a few weeks.

goodreads updates was it was, it's Harry Potter meets K-Pop demon hunters.

And that's what I felt like this book kind of was a little bit for me.

And in my fan cast, you'll see that that's all I could picture.

I like Michaela thought I was going to go.

I loved that I had so many point of views going into it, but because there were so many
spk_0
point of views, it was hard for me to develop a connection to any of the characters.

So for me, the story felt very low stakes until it was revealed that, oh, hey, actually,

you do truly, quote, die if you don't make it in the trials.
spk_0
I almost feel like I wish that would have been revealed earlier on in the story.
spk_0
And then I would have been more invested because during the trials, I was like, well, what's
spk_0
the point if you die?
spk_0
Who cares?
spk_0

And at that point, I also didn't really see being an ascended being as this high stakes
spk_0
thing.

Yeah.

So for me, it just kind of felt like so what?

For a big portion of the story.

And also just, you know, some of the things that are just kind of used a lot in fantasy books

were in it.

I mean, we all know I love not telekinesis telepathy.

Yeah, you got telepathy, which I do love.

The relationship between August and Ren felt very similar to a lot of books kind of

was giving.

I'm not going to say what book, but I think we all three know which book, which I loved

and I ate it up, but it just felt the same.

But I will say that I really loved the setting.

I felt like the thought of it being in the afterlife and their reaping souls fighting

these demons felt really fun and new to me.

And also I felt like it was a really good September pick because it did feel very fall.

With the afterlife.

So I did love that.

I'm asking myself if I'm going to continue reading the next book.

I thought August was interesting and I loved the audiobook narrator.

All the audio, the audiobook was fantastic, like as far as like talent is concerned.

But I just had the hardest time connecting with them because I think it was just kind of

like I see exactly where this is going a little bit.

And it just, I don't know, there was something about that didn't fall that exciting to me.

However, I was so, I was really invested in Olivia and Emilia.

I really was like ruined for them.

I think that's the thing that kept me invested.

But yeah, the stakes did not feel high enough for me to be like, I need to pick this book

up and read it.

It just felt, I don't know, the very beginning, I was like, oh, this is so exciting and so

interesting.

And then it kind of just, yeah, I think it was one of the first trials started.

I was kind of like, oh, this doesn't feel high stakes enough.

And then like you said, once it was revealed, I like your thought of it.

Maybe should have been introduced a little sooner.

The ending was good.

I was surprised by a few things.

And it makes me kind of intrigued for the next book, but I just am not feeling like

excited enough to potentially continue.

So I feel like a Debbie Downer, but I think for a good 80% of this book, I was just kind of like,

I wasn't super impressed.

Well, that's also considered that we're all on a really bad reading slum.

Quite literally the worst of my reading career.

And specifically, once again, something about fantasy books, I feel like they've all just

been falling short and I don't know what I'm wanting or needing from them.

I don't know. Maybe it's just the young adult fantasy genre that I'm kind of

that feels, yeah, higher stakes.

use just a little bit more mature plot themes that I feel like typically do feel a little bit more
