spk_0 So you see there are many styles of jazz as we're trying to show you there

spk_0 There's some that sound that use elements of the music that you're very familiar and some that use elements that

spk_0 You maybe are not as familiar as perhaps you should be

spk_0 When I play the piano I like to do things that

spk_0 Reflect both the jazz tradition and the European classical tradition that I studied

spk_0 I'll show you how I put those some things together sometime

spk_0 For instance just to give you an idea of some of the things that happen in jazz

spk_0 There's a style of jazz that has a kind of a ragtime accompaniment

spk_0 Now that kind of

spk_0 That's called stride piano and it's a the accompaniment to an older style one of the first styles of jazz

spk_0 As a matter of fact be very first style of jazz you may be more familiar with that accompaniment when you hear it like this

spk_0 So you know when I play the entertainer that's what I was using now

spk_0 When I do other things for instance, there's another kind of accompaniment that was used back in days when

spk_0 Teddy Wilson was playing with the Benny Goodman

spk_0 Quartet and they were playing really fast jazz these to play things like this

spk_0 Now so the left hand was just running all over the place

spk_0 Like that and so that was one kind of accompaniment when I play jazz sometimes I use one sometimes I use another but

spk_0 Sometimes I use something that kind of goes really back to

spk_0 Studying piano when I had to learn things

spk_0 Things like that well what do you do with that if you're gonna be a jazz musician?
