Hey, Book Busties. Welcome to more than a book club podcast. I'm your host, Lena.
spk_0
And I'm your other host, LJ.
spk_0
And today we are doing what LJ?
spk_0
You put me on the spot this time and I love it.
spk_0
I did it on purpose.
spk_0
I know I love it. You look so delighted too.
spk_0
But we are talking about scary movies.
spk_0
Which I have to say, I was like, I don't watch scary movies.
spk_0
And then I started thinking about it and I'm like, okay, maybe I do.
spk_0
Maybe there are a lot of scary movies that I like.
spk_0
But it is officially spooky month.
spk_0
It is October.
spk_0
We're recording this. I'm not to prefer. So it's like officially official.
spk_0
It's officially official.
spk_0
Even if the weather doesn't agree.
spk_0
No, in Texas, it is still 90 degrees during the day.
spk_0
It's lame.
spk_0
It is.
spk_0
But we are getting to wear like in the mornings and the evenings.
spk_0
It's not stifling, which is great.
spk_0
We'll take it.
spk_0
It's so weird to me because when I lived in Spokane, Washington,
spk_0
this time of year, like you're already wearing jackets and sweaters and hoodies and
spk_0
just totally different.
spk_0
It is totally different.
spk_0
I'm ready for hoodies.
spk_0
I am.
spk_0
I bought one this summer on our vacation.
spk_0
And I've wore it once whenever it was like 75 degrees because I was like, I'm going to wear this.
spk_0
I love it.
spk_0
I love it full support with that.
spk_0
Excellent.
spk_0
I had to crank my air conditioner, but it was fine.
spk_0
I get cold if I'm not moving around.
spk_0
So I wear sweatshirts all the time at home.
spk_0
But yeah, not right now.
spk_0
Apparently I'm hot right now, but I don't know.
spk_0
We'll just blame that on Perryman applause.
spk_0
I guess.
spk_0
Looked everything else.
spk_0
I guess.
spk_0
We'll just, yeah, everything falls into that category.
spk_0
So before we get to our movies, let's talk about what we've been doing literally lately.
spk_0
What have you been up to?
spk_0
Well, I finished Crown of Midnight, which is the second thrown of glass book.
spk_0
And then I read the entirety of the third one, era fire.
spk_0
You just kept going.
spk_0
I just kept going like.
spk_0
I just could not wait for Lena.
spk_0
I, and I've read these books two other times.
spk_0
So it's not like I don't know what's going to happen.
spk_0
But they're just so good.
spk_0
And I just had to keep going.
spk_0
I think I read.
spk_0
Era fire between reading and listening in the car.
spk_0
I think it was less than 48 hours.
spk_0
And it's not a short book.
spk_0
They're big books.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
So which is your favorite?
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
Of those three of those three era fire.
spk_0
It's one.
spk_0
And even of all the books, it might be.
spk_0
I think it might be my second favorite.
spk_0
It's a really good one.
spk_0
This series, the thrown of glass series is a Sarah J.
spk_0
Mass series, which of the Sarah J.
spk_0
Mass series is your favorite?
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
So what I want to say that may or may not still be true.
spk_0
I would say I've always said a guitar.
spk_0
And I'm not sure.
spk_0
I'm going to reread Akatar.
spk_0
After I finish thrown of glass.
spk_0
Because.
spk_0
I haven't read it in.
spk_0
Like maybe two and a half years.
spk_0
And a lot has changed in my life since then.
spk_0
And my, my favorites of books.
spk_0
The genres are a little bit different.
spk_0
I will say if I'm looking at all three of her series.
spk_0
And I'm going to make a favorite, just throw it coworker
spk_0
어.
spk_0
Because they're not near a person's
spk_0
girl in the sia case.
spk_0
I mentioned.
spk_0
When weлушай this next week, I always play your story of
spk_0
a person's singing in conjunction with used will to trigger
spk_0
I can recognize that Throne of Glass is better
spk_0
and that crescent city is better.
spk_0
So knowing what I know now,
spk_0
having read the Crescent City Series,
spk_0
and now reading Throne of Glass,
spk_0
I want to go back and read Akatar with a new lens.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Which I was like, oh, but I hated that.
spk_0
So, but I want to go back and reread them,
spk_0
knowing what I know now.
spk_0
Because I think that after you find some different things out
spk_0
in those other two book series,
spk_0
you're like, okay, how does this all fit together?
spk_0
Like, yeah, there's things in Throne of Glass
spk_0
that I'm like, ooh, would they call that something else
spk_0
and a different?
spk_0
Oh, just wait.
spk_0
Just wait.
spk_0
If you keep going, there are so many things
spk_0
that as Emily and I were reading this last crescent city book,
spk_0
that we are like, wait a minute, wait a minute,
spk_0
and we're like, do we think this from all,
spk_0
because you're right, like all three of them,
spk_0
they have some overlap in the universe.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
And so it's interesting, which you might,
spk_0
I think they mentioned this in the first book
spk_0
about how iron can restrict magic.
spk_0
Maybe they did.
spk_0
Maybe they did.
spk_0
I don't know if they did,
spk_0
but it doesn't become a big thing
spk_0
because magic doesn't really exist.
spk_0
It exists in Throne of Glass at that time.
spk_0
Like it's been stifled.
spk_0
But when they talk about that,
spk_0
it's interesting because in Akatar,
spk_0
that was the myth, remember,
spk_0
and then they're like, but it's not actually true.
spk_0
Like the iron rings aren't gonna protect you.
spk_0
And so it's like, so then I'm like, okay,
spk_0
if these are all potentially in the same universe,
spk_0
could it be that Akatar is much later,
spk_0
but before crescent city,
spk_0
and maybe adaptations or evolution?
spk_0
Like I wanna know all the things, you know?
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
So I don't know, or from different worlds.
spk_0
Cause like we know they do talk about the portals.
spk_0
Yeah, and in crescent city, we see that too.
spk_0
And so it's like all these things that I'm like,
spk_0
I have so many questions.
spk_0
Yeah, so I am rethinking my stance on Sarah J. Mass.
spk_0
Woo!
spk_0
Putting that out there into the world
spk_0
because I too finished, I finished Throne of Glass.
spk_0
Just the first one.
spk_0
I know you had already finished it,
spk_0
but finished the first one, it was really good.
spk_0
And I wanna keep going.
spk_0
So.
spk_0
And that is the worst of the series, honestly.
spk_0
Oh really?
spk_0
Yeah, oh yeah.
spk_0
No, it is the worst of, it's my least favorite of the books.
spk_0
Like I would say, I think it was good.
spk_0
Because sometimes, you know, the first book is so good.
spk_0
And then the second one is kind of a flop.
spk_0
spk_0
No, this is my gosh.
spk_0
I like, oh my gosh, I can't wait for you to read them.
spk_0
Like they're just so,
spk_0
they're just so good.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
Before we make this an episode about Throne of Glass,
spk_0
we need to move on.
spk_0
We need to move on.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
What have you been up to literally lately, Lata?
spk_0
Well, I did finish Throne of Glass.
spk_0
I finished Careless People, which was the Facebook CEO person,
spk_0
which that book, I'm like, oh,
spk_0
I have so many feelings about Facebook now,
spk_0
which we all know that they're stealing our data.
spk_0
We know that they're tracking us.
spk_0
100%.
spk_0
But just some of the things that came out,
spk_0
I was like, man, I really don't know if I can support this.
spk_0
Which I'm chronically online.
spk_0
And I've been trying to get off of Facebook for a while.
spk_0
And it honestly doesn't bring much joy to me anymore.
spk_0
So maybe this will be my time to come to Jesus moment.
spk_0
Well, Lena and I the other day,
spk_0
our children's school went on lockdown before school started.
spk_0
So I had deactivated my Facebook
spk_0
and I reactivated it to go on to see in the mom groups
spk_0
what the heck is going on?
spk_0
If anyone had any information,
spk_0
but yeah, I'm like,
spk_0
I'm going to lock down at like seven, 10.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
And I had just dropped Piper Office Gold.
spk_0
Danny was homesick, but it was scary.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Not knowing.
spk_0
And there was a kid standing around like they didn't know
spk_0
what was going on.
spk_0
But everybody was safe.
spk_0
But all that to say with you saying that,
spk_0
like I deactivated it.
spk_0
Now I'm like, I got to go re deactivate it
spk_0
because I don't want to go because you're right.
spk_0
Like I hate that that meta owns Instagram
spk_0
because I feel like my Instagram feed,
spk_0
I have it like beautiful where I see what I want to see
spk_0
on my Beurice account.
spk_0
That's not that way.
spk_0
And Facebook has never let me see what I want to see.
spk_0
I feel like so.
spk_0
Yeah, I think it hit you for like a year one time.
spk_0
And I was like, LJ just must not be posting.
spk_0
No, LJ definitely was posting.
spk_0
I'm pretty sure.
spk_0
But yeah, okay, what else?
spk_0
What else literary?
spk_0
And then I've read
spk_0
Zom romcom.
spk_0
Oh, yeah.
spk_0
How was that?
spk_0
I thought it was kind of funny.
spk_0
It's supposed to be like a obviously a romcom.
spk_0
It was very fitting for this time of year.
spk_0
But it's Zombie apocalypse 20 years ago.
spk_0
Zombies were released.
spk_0
But there's been a breach in a wall.
spk_0
And so this the main character,
spk_0
she finds that the zombies have breached the wall.
spk_0
So she goes over to go tell her neighbor
spk_0
who's kind of this idiot.
spk_0
His name is Chad.
spk_0
And she crisis.
spk_0
Of course it's Chad.
spk_0
And like, let's keep you safe.
spk_0
Like I'm going to tell you that there's zombies
spk_0
even though I don't like you.
spk_0
But then it turns out that Chad is a persona.
spk_0
Her neighbor is actually a vampire
spk_0
because there's a whole bunch of supernatural characters
spk_0
in this world who is this written by Olivia Dade.
spk_0
And she has written another book
spk_0
that I've been wanting to read.
spk_0
Like it's been on my TBR forever.
spk_0
And so I didn't realize that was who it was.
spk_0
But after I finished this, I was like,
spk_0
what else is she written?
spk_0
Because she's written quite extensively actually.
spk_0
But it turns into they have to go save the world basically,
spk_0
you know, as one does.
spk_0
But as a vampire and his human neighbor,
spk_0
and then they meet up with all these other supernatural beings.
spk_0
But it was fun.
spk_0
It wasn't, I give it three stars.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
And that's not because it was bad.
spk_0
It was more of something that I didn't feel super passionate about.
spk_0
Like I'm going to go read this is like the first
spk_0
of a supernatural series for her.
spk_0
And so I'm probably going to read the second one.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
But I don't know if it's anything great.
spk_0
No, I know three stars for me can mean it was okay.
spk_0
I enjoyed it and I might keep going.
spk_0
And it also can be like I've rated a lot of the Jaina
spk_0
of Ottervitches as threes.
spk_0
And I love those.
spk_0
But I'm like, I just feel like there are three.
spk_0
Like it's not a little bit full to her.
spk_0
It's so arbitrary.
spk_0
Like I feel bad giving a three though,
spk_0
because sometimes that's my little score.
spk_0
But I think like a one or a two.
spk_0
Oh yeah.
spk_0
And I've had a very few of those.
spk_0
I've had very few books that I'm like, this is bad.
spk_0
Same.
spk_0
Well, you know, I'm like the five star queen.
spk_0
So you wrote a book, five stars.
spk_0
And then I'm currently reading an enchanting case
spk_0
of spirits by Melissa Holts, who is going to be on
spk_0
for our next episode.
spk_0
Her and Chris Wellert on talking about it.
spk_0
I need to read that.
spk_0
Some more spooky stuff.
spk_0
Is that the first one or the second one?
spk_0
It's the first one.
spk_0
So she gets two in that.
spk_0
I believe it's a series.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
So that's the first one.
spk_0
And that one's on Kindle Unlimited, because I have it.
spk_0
Oh, is it?
spk_0
I got it on audio.
spk_0
Oh, of course you did.
spk_0
Let me see.
spk_0
I need my audio books.
spk_0
I'm pretty sure I did.
spk_0
Let's see here.
spk_0
Yes.
spk_0
It is.
spk_0
Wait a minute.
spk_0
Maybe it wasn't.
spk_0
Wait, this is the enchanting case of spirits.
spk_0
Yes.
spk_0
Okay, maybe I, um, maybe I bought it.
spk_0
It doesn't say can no one limit it on here.
spk_0
I could have sworn it was.
spk_0
I don't know.
spk_0
I know.
spk_0
It does the audio.
spk_0
I don't think it was on Kindle Unlimited, but I'm not positive.
spk_0
Okay, I'll ask her next week.
spk_0
I might have just bought it.
spk_0
I don't know.
spk_0
I have no idea.
spk_0
But I need to read it.
spk_0
So yes.
spk_0
Thank you for the reminder.
spk_0
I'm only like, I literally think I'm 15 minutes into the listening time.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
Cool.
spk_0
I just started.
spk_0
I feel better, but yeah, I do need to get on that.
spk_0
Yes, but it sounds like a fun one.
spk_0
So that's good.
spk_0
Excited.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
But I thought it went well.
spk_0
I'm trying to get in some spooky books for October.
spk_0
I need to do that too.
spk_0
It's the season.
spk_0
Tis the season.
spk_0
It's a good time to read them.
spk_0
I'm going to have to read Stephen King, Lena, for you.
spk_0
I'll let you read that on your own.
spk_0
I'll tell you all about it in the diary lately.
spk_0
Sounds like a plan.
spk_0
But I actually did.
spk_0
We were talking about, you know, scary movies today.
spk_0
I almost watched it.
spk_0
I didn't, but I was so close yesterday.
spk_0
She's just sitting down and watching it.
spk_0
Which one?
spk_0
The mini series or the two movies?
spk_0
The mini?
spk_0
I don't know.
spk_0
I would have watched the movie.
spk_0
The one that came out like in the 90s.
spk_0
OK, that's the mid.
spk_0
That was a mini series.
spk_0
But I think you get it all in once.
spk_0
But yes, with, with, oh my gosh, why can't I think of his name?
spk_0
Oh my gosh.
spk_0
This is why IMDB exists.
spk_0
I know, but I know him.
spk_0
He was in Rocky Horror Picture Show, Clue, Annie.
spk_0
The guy.
spk_0
Yes, the guy.
spk_0
Yeah, this stroke.
spk_0
What is his name?
spk_0
Oh my gosh.
spk_0
Tim Curry.
spk_0
Tim Curry, thank you.
spk_0
Thank you.
spk_0
Yes, Tim Curry.
spk_0
And like, is there's the joke is like, what kind of person are you?
spk_0
Where do you know him from?
spk_0
Is it from home alone?
spk_0
Who is it from it?
spk_0
Home alone too.
spk_0
You're like, yeah.
spk_0
OK, yes.
spk_0
So that one, yeah, you should totally watch it.
spk_0
It's really good.
spk_0
He makes a great penny wise.
spk_0
And it is good.
spk_0
And it's relatively true to the book.
spk_0
I seem to like Stephen King movies more than books.
spk_0
So I was like, I should give that one a try.
spk_0
You should.
spk_0
Dead, I watched Cabin in the Woods.
spk_0
God, I never seen that one.
spk_0
I'm going to watch something that's new.
spk_0
Something that recently came out.
spk_0
It turned out that it came out in like 2011.
spk_0
Hey, that's recent.
spk_0
That's recent.
spk_0
spk_0
That's recent.
spk_0
This is so old.
spk_0
Well, I was like, I've watched a lot of older movies,
spk_0
but nothing new.
spk_0
My husband, Derek, is terrified of scary movies.
spk_0
Like, absolutely hates them.
spk_0
And way back when in 2002, whenever the ring came out,
spk_0
we were newly married.
spk_0
I forgot about that movie.
spk_0
And he went and saw a somewhat scary movie
spk_0
with our group of friends while I was working.
spk_0
And I was like, so you went and saw that.
spk_0
We're going to go watch the ring now.
spk_0
And I convinced him that it wasn't that scary.
spk_0
Oh my gosh.
spk_0
Lena.
spk_0
And I was like, it's going to be fine.
spk_0
It's going to be fine.
spk_0
He ended up watching it.
spk_0
You know how like a baseball hat has like at the top
spk_0
that has the little hard part.
spk_0
And then it has like the little holes riveted around.
spk_0
So he was looking at those.
spk_0
He was looking through the little hole.
spk_0
Oh my gosh.
spk_0
To watch the movie.
spk_0
And then I ended up having nightmares
spk_0
for like a week afterwards.
spk_0
Well, because of the A back.
spk_0
I got my payback.
spk_0
Because you got to make it seven days to see what happens.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
That's a good creepy ending.
spk_0
I keep it.
spk_0
I didn't think of those when I was making my list.
spk_0
But yeah, when I saw the ring, I was like,
spk_0
what, why did I do this?
spk_0
Because yeah, I thought that was terrifying.
spk_0
That was one of the best endings when they were like,
spk_0
the little boys like, what about the people we showed it to
spk_0
or whatever and then they turn in, look at the camera.
spk_0
And you're like, oh my gosh.
spk_0
That's us.
spk_0
So creepy.
spk_0
And you know another one that where I had just,
spk_0
I saw a movie in college and I was home on like winter
spk_0
or summer break.
spk_0
And I had to sleep with my parents for three nights.
spk_0
I'm an adult.
spk_0
As a college age adult.
spk_0
Final destination, the first one.
spk_0
Really?
spk_0
It for reached me out so badly that I had to sleep
spk_0
with my parents for three nights.
spk_0
And my mom was like, this is ridiculous.
spk_0
You're an adult.
spk_0
And like literally at their house, like here, here,
spk_0
the where it meets, here's my door.
spk_0
Here's their door.
spk_0
Like it literally was like, our rooms were right.
spk_0
It could not be any closer.
spk_0
And they're like, you're just really literally right now
spk_0
right there.
spk_0
And I was like, it's not close enough.
spk_0
And the floor, I wouldn't sleep on the floor
spk_0
because I was afraid of what's under their bed.
spk_0
Oh, yeah.
spk_0
Well, that's, so yeah.
spk_0
So three adults in a king size bed.
spk_0
At least it was the king size.
spk_0
And it was a king size bed.
spk_0
But they had to accommodate their 19 or 19 year old
spk_0
or 20 year old daughter.
spk_0
It was hilarious.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Cabin in the woods, it was good.
spk_0
It was more sci-fi.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
Then horror, like it had horror aspects.
spk_0
But it turned out to be a sci-fi movie.
spk_0
And it turned out that it was written and produced
spk_0
by Joss Whedon, who did Firefly and Buffy and the Empire Slayer.
spk_0
I was like, you'll know from Buffy.
spk_0
I know from Firefly.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
But it was, it had Chris Hemsworth in it.
spk_0
Oh.
spk_0
Like he stars in it and Jesse Williams from Grey's Anatomy.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
It has the really pretty eyes.
spk_0
And then Bradley Whitford.
spk_0
Oh.
spk_0
So I was like, this is just Bradley Whitford plays like a button
spk_0
and push her kind of in the sci-fi aspect of it.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
It was a fun, different movie.
spk_0
Cool.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
I think my kids would like it.
spk_0
My teenagers, I won't say kids because kids
spk_0
should not watch that.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
I guess we have to distinguish.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Our kids are older.
spk_0
Please don't watch these movies with, no.
spk_0
Your littles.
spk_0
Some of them you can.
spk_0
Yes.
spk_0
Yes.
spk_0
Maybe.
spk_0
Oh my god.
spk_0
No, I don't know.
spk_0
I don't know.
spk_0
Let's just start with Poltergeist 2 because here's the,
spk_0
here's the story.
spk_0
Lena was so adamant that we must watch Poltergeist 2.
spk_0
And I don't remember.
spk_0
It was like kind of like we had all these things.
spk_0
Look, we're at dinner and we're talking about this stuff.
spk_0
And we think we're talking about Poltergeist 2.
spk_0
And Emily is like, no, that's, that's the first movie.
spk_0
No, that's the first movie.
spk_0
And it literally turns out that she was right.
spk_0
At least for what I remembered.
spk_0
Yes, she was right.
spk_0
Everything that I was thinking of was from the first movie,
spk_0
except they show it again in the second one.
spk_0
Yeah, they do.
spk_0
They do.
spk_0
So it's kind of like flashback scenes.
spk_0
Mm-hmm.
spk_0
But.
spk_0
Well, you know, I was, I am DBing the trivia as I was watching.
spk_0
I forgot that they had a teenage daughter.
spk_0
And the first one, I was like, what the heck happened to her?
spk_0
Well, the actress died in real life.
spk_0
Oh.
spk_0
She was murdered by her ex-boyfriend.
spk_0
Oh my gosh.
spk_0
And so they,
spk_0
and then the little girl from it died shortly after this.
spk_0
Yeah, she had.
spk_0
I think, so I think it was like a stomach issue.
spk_0
It's so sad.
spk_0
And she was so cute.
spk_0
Like she was such a cute little girl.
spk_0
She was.
spk_0
It was cardio pulmonary arrest and intestinal stenosis.
spk_0
But I think it said, I think maybe it was something.
spk_0
Well, this is so sad.
spk_0
It has her last words where I love you to her mom.
spk_0
Oh my gosh.
spk_0
This is so sad.
spk_0
Anyway, but yeah,
spk_0
yeah, whenever I was watching Pulitzer, guys, too, I was like, where did the,
spk_0
like they didn't even address it.
spk_0
They could have said like, oh, she's at college now.
spk_0
But I think they, it's said in the trivia that they were,
spk_0
they weren't sure how to,
spk_0
which that was kind of one of the things is like, maybe,
spk_0
but instead they just decided not to mention her.
spk_0
But just I remember that from the first one,
spk_0
because my son and I watched Pulitzer, guys, one a few years ago.
spk_0
And they had several scenes with a teenage daughter where she's fighting the ghost
spk_0
or whatever and her nightgown comes up.
spk_0
You was like, why, why are they doing this?
spk_0
I was like, because it's the 80s.
spk_0
And this is what they do.
spk_0
This is what they did.
spk_0
Because originally, like on my, where I watched it, it said this movie was PG 13.
spk_0
But in the trivia, it actually said that it was originally,
spk_0
well, first it was read R and then they managed to get it down to a PG rating,
spk_0
because PG 13 did not exist.
spk_0
Yes, which is why I was talking with someone else and remancing in the stone
spk_0
was right before the PG 13 came out,
spk_0
because I was watching that with paper whenever she was little.
spk_0
And she was like, I'm out of here.
spk_0
I have not seen romance in the stone.
spk_0
But I can tell you that 16 candles has full frontal nudity of a girl and it's PG.
spk_0
So it's like, what?
spk_0
Yeah, totally different time.
spk_0
I told you guys to the worm.
spk_0
That's the part that I remembered.
spk_0
And I had forgotten that part and I forgot the dad, Craig T Nelson.
spk_0
He drinks so much.
spk_0
Like they go to a diner in the middle of the night.
spk_0
It's like 430 in the morning or something and he's having a beer.
spk_0
Yeah, how are you getting served, sir?
spk_0
I know.
spk_0
Well, this is what was interesting to like during that scene before she,
spk_0
like when he goes in there and is like kind of pushing her around and stuff,
spk_0
her reaction, like she wasn't like, what are you doing?
spk_0
She was just like, please stop.
spk_0
And I was like, what does that say about their relationship?
spk_0
Is that supposed to be a hint that like there was more to that?
spk_0
Maybe with the drinking, but, but she didn't react as like,
spk_0
because like if, if that were like, my ex is, I'd be like, what is wrong with you?
spk_0
Have are you on drugs?
spk_0
Like I would be like, what?
spk_0
What is happening?
spk_0
This, what are you doing?
spk_0
And she did not have that reaction at first.
spk_0
So I don't know.
spk_0
I definitely thought that was weird.
spk_0
And then he vomits the worm.
spk_0
I, that's the part that I remembered.
spk_0
And then I remembered the guy with the hat.
spk_0
The guy with the hat was what I really remembered from that movie.
spk_0
And he was super creepy and yeah, the mom didn't react well to him either.
spk_0
I'm like, no, stay away from my child.
spk_0
Yeah, the man with the hat creepy.
spk_0
So creepy.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
That's Pulitzer guys too.
spk_0
I think that was one that I grew up watching.
spk_0
And that's why I was adamant that we had to watch it when my mom remarried.
spk_0
Her new husband had two kids, my sister and her brother.
spk_0
And they had Pulitzer guys too.
spk_0
And then I had to ask my sister because we used to watch Friday 13th all the time.
spk_0
And it was the fifth one.
spk_0
Oh man, you just missed the one that traumatized me as a child.
spk_0
But that was, that's the only one that I've ever seen.
spk_0
But other than that, we watched Candyman.
spk_0
Yeah, you told me about that.
spk_0
And I was talking with my sister about it.
spk_0
And the only thing either of us remember is that it had bees.
spk_0
Like we were scarred horrifically because the bees came out of his mouth.
spk_0
But yeah, I'm really glad that we could not find that to start for free.
spk_0
Which there's a newer one I think that came out.
spk_0
Like they think I saw something like that.
spk_0
Yeah, this is the old 1992.
spk_0
I'm sure it's horrible.
spk_0
But it scarred me as a child.
spk_0
It probably is horrible.
spk_0
But that's like a racnephobia.
spk_0
Watch that is once as a kid.
spk_0
I was like, once was enough because I don't love spiders.
spk_0
Don't ever watch it, Lena.
spk_0
I have watched it.
spk_0
Why?
spk_0
And it was terrifying.
spk_0
Oh my gosh.
spk_0
No, I watched it as a kid probably shortly after it came out because it came out in 1990.
spk_0
And my son wanted to watch a scary movie whenever he was probably around 10.
spk_0
And I was like, here's one that is scary, but not gory.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
So we watched that, which John Goodman's character in that he's the exterminator guy.
spk_0
And he is just hilarious.
spk_0
See, I don't remember that because I only watched it the one time and was like,
spk_0
I'm never watching this again.
spk_0
So yeah, no.
spk_0
Yeah, John Goodman's character.
spk_0
He plays like this crazy exterminator that's like, I'm going to bomb your house and kill everything.
spk_0
And then he ends up spider food.
spk_0
No.
spk_0
Did you ever watch young Frankenstein?
spk_0
Oh my gosh.
spk_0
It's so good.
spk_0
You mean young Frankenstein.
spk_0
Frankenstein.
spk_0
Because remember all their pronunciation is weird.
spk_0
Oh my gosh.
spk_0
And then the girl whenever they said her name and then the horses would like
spk_0
like so good.
spk_0
So good.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
That's why I haven't ever watched that.
spk_0
It's a Mel Brooks film 1974 gene wilder as Dr.
spk_0
Frankenstein, which he's supposed to be.
spk_0
Frankenstein's nephew.
spk_0
Is that what it was?
spk_0
Something.
spk_0
And Peter Boyle plays Frankenstein's monster.
spk_0
And then is it is it chlorosleachment is the old.
spk_0
Chlorosleachment.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
And then I don't know what her name is, but Phoebe's mom from Friends.
spk_0
Is the young one.
spk_0
I forget what her name is, but yeah, it's good.
spk_0
It's so funny.
spk_0
We used to quote that all the time.
spk_0
Like where they take the candle out and then the wall turns.
spk_0
And he's like, the candle back because he's all smashed.
spk_0
There's it's so many good lines.
spk_0
I haven't seen that in forever.
spk_0
But it's such a good movie.
spk_0
I know I'm like, okay, I need to find that, which along the same lines of
spk_0
like not really scary, but maybe to kids it could be the movie clue.
spk_0
It's come up before.
spk_0
Yes.
spk_0
Love the movie clue.
spk_0
And because it it's kind of like and then there were none, but funny.
spk_0
Also Tim Curry.
spk_0
And I remember as a kid kind of being scared like a little bit, you know,
spk_0
because people are getting murdered, but as an adult, I just so funny.
spk_0
It's funny.
spk_0
I watched it for the first time.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Recently me and Piper watched it.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
And the ending was just hilarious.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
It's so funny.
spk_0
Like I love how all the different endings and apparently, you know,
spk_0
it was not successful in the theaters because because they had different
spk_0
endings at different theaters.
spk_0
And people would go to try to see the endings, but then like it just it became
spk_0
more of a, or something, it became more of a cult classic.
spk_0
It was like did better like on VHS and stuff like that, which I love it.
spk_0
It's so good.
spk_0
So parents, if you, that one's good.
spk_0
I mean, there was a.
spk_0
There's some suggestive language and stuff.
spk_0
Yes.
spk_0
But that's another one like brother and law said he was watching it with his two
spk_0
kids and one just turned four.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
So.
spk_0
So I was like, okay.
spk_0
I mean, this suggestive language, they're not going to pick up on it.
spk_0
No, they wouldn't get.
spk_0
But yeah, no, but that's another one.
spk_0
It's like, let us in, let us in.
spk_0
Let us out.
spk_0
Let us out.
spk_0
And then she's like flames, flames.
spk_0
Are there like, okay, your husband was an illusionist, right?
spk_0
Yes.
spk_0
And he disappeared.
spk_0
Well, I didn't say he was a very good illusionist or something like that.
spk_0
I just.
spk_0
It has a lot of really good timing.
spk_0
Yes.
spk_0
So many good one liners.
spk_0
It was just, it was fun.
spk_0
It is fun.
spk_0
So highly recommend another one I grew up with was interview with a vampire.
spk_0
I feel like it had all the hot men.
spk_0
I didn't even see it till I was an adult.
spk_0
Really?
spk_0
I know.
spk_0
I missed out.
spk_0
I don't know watching it whenever it came out.
spk_0
And that Halloween, I was getting ready.
spk_0
I was, it was, I had to be like fifth grade that we got to go home and change into our costumes and go back to school.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
And we were all getting ready at a friend's house and the today show, like the long today show version was on.
spk_0
And they were interviewing people who thought they were actually vampires.
spk_0
No.
spk_0
So it was that's my core memory.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
Vampires.
spk_0
I have to tell you some like so.
spk_0
I remember wanting to watch some with my cousins who, which shout out Leslie and Ramsey haven't done that for a while.
spk_0
I was four or four and a half years older than them.
spk_0
So wanting to watch scary movies together.
spk_0
Like I was older so I could watch more.
spk_0
So then it's like, well, what can we watch together together?
spk_0
And so there were some that it's just funny to think that they weren't that scary.
spk_0
But we watched like hush, hush, sweet Charlotte, which I don't remember anything.
spk_0
I don't even think they're really was a ghost.
spk_0
Whatever happened to baby Jane, that one, they both have Betty Davis.
spk_0
Like these are old like black and white, like not even great ones.
spk_0
And then my friend, I remember when we were younger and we wanted to watch a scary movie and her parents weren't like my aunt who showed me Friday the 13th movies.
spk_0
I remember watching Audrey Rose.
spk_0
Did you ever see that one?
spk_0
I don't know.
spk_0
It's so creepy.
spk_0
So the story of this.
spk_0
Which I actually have a little blurb here, but it's kind of long.
spk_0
But basically there's this couple, they're married.
spk_0
They have a young daughter.
spk_0
She's 11 and one day there's like this weird man following their daughter.
spk_0
And so they're like all freaked out.
spk_0
And he contacts them and shows up.
spk_0
The stranger is Anthony Hopkins by the way.
spk_0
Oh, and he is telling them that his daughter, Audrey Rose died in a car accident 11 years ago.
spk_0
And that she's been reincarnated into Ivy.
spk_0
And like there's all these things that happen, like with Ivy and everything that suggests, like if you ever heard people say, like I've heard things were like, OK, you have really like a psychic being like you have really bad anxiety at age 28 that came on because you were killed in a car accident.
spk_0
And you know, like things like that.
spk_0
And so it's supposed to be that.
spk_0
And so it is a, it's creepy like this movie.
spk_0
That's really familiar.
spk_0
I wonder if I have seen it.
spk_0
It was like from the 70s.
spk_0
But yeah, Anthony Hopkins is in it.
spk_0
He's the, I'm sure people would know the other actors, but he's the one that I know.
spk_0
You know, there were a lot of like really scary movies that came out in the late 60s or late 70s.
spk_0
Oh, yeah.
spk_0
Like also the change lane.
spk_0
I think I've mentioned it before.
spk_0
Not the movie with Angelina Jolie.
spk_0
That's something else.
spk_0
But there is a movie called the change Lee from the 70s where this guy like rents this big old house to write a book or something.
spk_0
And then it's haunted and all this crazy stuff happens.
spk_0
And there's something with a Catholic priest and all these things.
spk_0
Anyway, but it's, it's so creepy.
spk_0
You're right.
spk_0
Like the ones coming out then like do you have other ones like from that time period that scared you?
spk_0
So 1960 was psycho.
spk_0
Oh, yeah, psycho.
spk_0
How could I forget that one?
spk_0
Like a classic Alfred Hitchcock movie.
spk_0
I watched that.
spk_0
The shower scene from from that was generally is iconic.
spk_0
It is iconic in 1963.
spk_0
The birds came out, which was another Alfred Hitchcock.
spk_0
Yeah, it had Jessica Tandy and Tippy Headron in it, which I was like, oh, I know I haven't seen this in years.
spk_0
So I was like, this is kind of fun to go down memory lane.
spk_0
Well, and then it has Suzanne Plachette, who was on Bob Newhart, the teacher friend that had been the ex girlfriend of the guy.
spk_0
So she was very famous.
spk_0
It's been a hot minute since I watched Bob Newhart.
spk_0
Yeah, I loved that.
spk_0
I that's when I've, well, I used to have the DVDs and would watch the fall asleep.
spk_0
spk_0
So, um, but yeah, no, you're right.
spk_0
Like, and I, so I watched the birds and psycho this summer, I think.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
And I'd forgotten in psycho that she was running from the law because she had stolen money.
spk_0
I totally forgot about that.
spk_0
So in the 1968 was Rosemary's baby.
spk_0
Oh, yeah, that's another one.
spk_0
That was Roman Polanski directed and Mia Farrow was Rosemary and she's having the anti Christ.
spk_0
Yes.
spk_0
Yes, they brought her and she think she's a witch's and oh, yeah.
spk_0
And they give her this weird drink and she's like sick because I watched half of it recently.
spk_0
Didn't finish it.
spk_0
No, another one.
spk_0
I think I don't know, it might have been the 50s.
spk_0
Did you ever see the bad seed?
spk_0
No.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
So that's, that's the story of where like this little girl is a murderer kind of.
spk_0
And anyway, it's so creepy.
spk_0
That one.
spk_0
And then there was one called the nanny where like this little, like one of the kids she
spk_0
nannyed for died.
spk_0
This was also black and white.
spk_0
And then I think you find out at the end that the nanny had killed the kid or something.
spk_0
But it's like, it's like the daughter like new and was trying to prove it.
spk_0
But the parents are all like, no, no.
spk_0
And anyway, but yeah, that's another old one that you know, because we weren't allowed
spk_0
to watch like real ones.
spk_0
So we had that.
spk_0
See, I didn't watch any of these till I was probably a teenager.
spk_0
The exorcist.
spk_0
And the exorcist.
spk_0
Yep.
spk_0
Yep.
spk_0
Linda Blair.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
And I have, I found this note.
spk_0
It was the first horror film to be dominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture.
spk_0
Interesting.
spk_0
And everybody always talks about the scene where she projectile vomit and her head spins around
spk_0
and all that.
spk_0
But the scene with the crucifix.
spk_0
Do you know what I'm talking about?
spk_0
I don't know.
spk_0
Remind me.
spk_0
I watched it last year.
spk_0
So it'll probably come back.
spk_0
She's.
spk_0
Oh.
spk_0
Yes.
spk_0
Yes.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
So I don't know what if I want to say this one.
spk_0
Don't say it.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
Here's what's interesting.
spk_0
I had only seen the TV edit.
spk_0
Oh, you had missed that.
spk_0
I had missed that until.
spk_0
So freshman year of college, it must have been October.
spk_0
It was some anniversary.
spk_0
Maybe it was like the 30th anniversary of the movie.
spk_0
It was rereleased in theaters and my friends and I went and I'm like, I'll remember that.
spk_0
I'll remember that.
spk_0
And I was like, oh my gosh.
spk_0
It is way more of a sexual movie than I ever knew.
spk_0
Like Linda Blair.
spk_0
She had to be young.
spk_0
She was young.
spk_0
She was 1973.
spk_0
So I'd.
spk_0
I just have a hard time being like man.
spk_0
So that's the scene that always gets me because I'm like, yeah, no, it had no idea.
spk_0
Like I was like, oh my gosh.
spk_0
They really do cuddle a lot of things out when they put it on TBS.
spk_0
Like, oh, they do.
spk_0
It was a surprise.
spk_0
It was a surprise.
spk_0
So then the other old one, which we already kind of talked about Friday the 13th,
spk_0
the sixth one is the one that I.
spk_0
You grew up.
spk_0
That I grew up scared of this one.
spk_0
And I did not rediscover it until I was an adult.
spk_0
And I had to go through different movies like when they were all on HBO to try to find it.
spk_0
And I found it.
spk_0
And it's the 13th.
spk_0
Our Friday the 6th because the main guy Tommy Jarvis or whatever he
spk_0
assumes Jason's body to to cremate his corpse because he's like, we got to make sure he
spk_0
doesn't come back and accidentally brings him back to life.
spk_0
And then he goes on a rampage.
spk_0
Well, one does as one does.
spk_0
And by the way, there's counselors like sleeping together, getting naked, you know,
spk_0
leaving all the kids in the cabins unattended after they're asleep.
spk_0
In my head, based on the one Jason movie that I've seen, dashes what happens at camp.
spk_0
Right.
spk_0
Right.
spk_0
I mean, like that's what happens at camp.
spk_0
And so there is a scene where Jason goes into a cabin where these all these kids asleep and this little
spk_0
girl opens her eyes and sees him and he sees her and then she's like this.
spk_0
And like, I remember that.
spk_0
So then I went to camp for 10 years as a kid.
spk_0
And I saw this at like age six or seven.
spk_0
So I'm in the summer and I wake up in the middle of the night and I'm like, Jason's going to get me.
spk_0
Like, what are you supposed to do is like, I'm going to wake up.
spk_0
And did they have the was it Oklahoma where the girl scout group?
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
That was murdered.
spk_0
It was at a girl scout camp.
spk_0
Oh my gosh.
spk_0
Yes.
spk_0
I could talk and that was probably around that same time.
spk_0
It was in the 70s.
spk_0
And that's what's crazy to me is.
spk_0
And I think it's like this potentially still at some camps, maybe, but it used to be like the counselors were not in like
spk_0
the cabin might have like four girls.
spk_0
And then the counselor had their own tent, the counselors are their own tent.
spk_0
And yeah, that happened at a girl scout camp.
spk_0
And you know what the saddest thing is about that?
spk_0
One of the little girls like did not want to go last minute and her mom made her go.
spk_0
And she was murdered.
spk_0
And it's just like, oh my gosh.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
So yeah, summer camp, be careful.
spk_0
Do not want you to get murdered.
spk_0
They're going to get you.
spk_0
Oh, I have one more.
spk_0
Would you have another old one?
spk_0
I have a, actually, I have a list of old ones.
spk_0
Now that I say this, I have one more old one.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
Go.
spk_0
And this one is set on Halloween day.
spk_0
So it's perfect.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
And it's not too scary.
spk_0
Ooh, arsenic and old place.
spk_0
Oh, I've seen part of that one.
spk_0
It's Jimmy Stewart.
spk_0
Carrie Grant.
spk_0
Oh, Carrie Grant.
spk_0
Now, Jimmy Stewart.
spk_0
What's the one with Jimmy Stewart?
spk_0
Oh, Jimmy Stewart might be in Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte.
spk_0
Sorry.
spk_0
Go ahead.
spk_0
But yes, Carrie Grant.
spk_0
Carrie Grant, who I love a total heartthrob.
spk_0
He really is.
spk_0
It's a funny movie.
spk_0
He's a playboy who on Halloween day,
spk_0
decides he's going to get married.
spk_0
So he goes and has a courthouse wedding.
spk_0
And the girl his bride is his next door neighbor.
spk_0
So he goes home to tell his aunts that he's gotten married.
spk_0
And she goes home to tell her dad and to pack her suitcase for their honeymoon.
spk_0
And while she's gone, he goes and his answer doing something.
spk_0
And he looks underneath like a window seat and sees a body.
spk_0
And he thinks that his uncle who has a mental illness where he thinks he's Teddy Roosevelt.
spk_0
Like digging the Panama Canal.
spk_0
Like he dresses like Teddy Roosevelt the whole nine.
spk_0
So he thinks that his uncle is the one who killed this person, but it turns out it was his sweet little old aunts.
spk_0
And so then it's kind of hilarity and zoos him trying to get his uncle carted away to
spk_0
and to say his family.
spk_0
And it's the answer like, no, no, it's fine.
spk_0
Of course they are.
spk_0
But it's a really funny movie.
spk_0
And I watched it with my kids.
spk_0
I had to be like nine and 10, 10 or 11.
spk_0
And they thought it was funny too.
spk_0
I think it got a little long for them to hold their interest because it's not a very fast pace movie.
spk_0
But it has, yeah, it has some funny parts in it.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
So the other one besides the Stephen King ones that obviously I will list.
spk_0
So there's this one called the House on Sorority Row.
spk_0
This is the one that came out in 1982.
spk_0
And it was not the one that they remade with Adrina Patrick from the hills.
spk_0
But the so I'll just read it's a really short thing.
spk_0
After a seemingly innocent prank goes horribly wrong.
spk_0
A group of sorority sisters are stalked and murdered one by one in their sorority house
spk_0
while throwing a party to celebrate their graduation.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
So this movie.
spk_0
I'm like, let's see here.
spk_0
My grandmother died when I was eight.
spk_0
So that means my cousin Morgan and I had to have been seven.
spk_0
And Morgan's brother would have been five and we're all at our grandparents house spending the night.
spk_0
And they are watching this movie with us out in the living room in the evening before before before bed.
spk_0
So the old lady that is like the house mother or whatever.
spk_0
She wears a blue bathrobe and she's the one that they they try to like prank her,
spk_0
but they accidentally kill her.
spk_0
Then they hide her body, you know, whatever, because they're having this party and they're like,
spk_0
we'll deal with it later as one would.
spk_0
And so then they keep different things happen.
spk_0
And like this is kind of a gory movie.
spk_0
I remembered someone gets killed in a bathroom stall.
spk_0
And then there's something where like someone was hiding overhead.
spk_0
So forever, I mean, even still a little bit bathroom cabinets high up.
spk_0
Like I'm like, is someone going to come out of there and kill me?
spk_0
Anyway.
spk_0
So we get sent to bed before this movie is over and they tell us what we think is the ending.
spk_0
And that yeah, it was the it was the old lady she killed.
spk_0
She wasn't really dead.
spk_0
She killed them all and she got arrested.
spk_0
So we think this.
spk_0
So I don't know the name of this movie.
spk_0
And what I become determined to find this movie.
spk_0
I did manage to find it on Halloween, like in 2008, when I was on the internet with my first ever MacBook.
spk_0
And I managed to find it because I started thinking like I remember there were bathroom stalls.
spk_0
So I was like, this has to be a sorority house.
spk_0
So sure enough, I find it.
spk_0
And it has images and all this stuff.
spk_0
And I'm like, oh my gosh, it's the Blue Lady.
spk_0
So I sent it to my cousin.
spk_0
I was like, the Blue Lady because we still refer to her as the Blue Lady.
spk_0
But by the way, that's not what happened to them.
spk_0
She really was dead.
spk_0
What it was is her son had gotten out of the mental institution to go home.
spk_0
And that's why she was trying to get.
spk_0
She was trying to get the girls out because there's supposed to graduate and be gone.
spk_0
And so then he could enjoy like a break from the mental institution.
spk_0
But instead he sees them kill his mom.
spk_0
So he starts killing all of them.
spk_0
And there's something with like a creepy music box.
spk_0
Anyway, so that traumatized me as a kid.
spk_0
And I have to tell you all there is someone famous
spk_0
in this movie, I lean Davidson, formerly of the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.
spk_0
And I think she's still on the young and the restless.
spk_0
And she is married to Vincent Van Patten of like, what's his name?
spk_0
Dick Van Patten's son.
spk_0
So like like you lost me.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
Well, anyway, I would watch young and restless, but you would recognize Dick Van Patten.
spk_0
If you like, look him up, you would recognize him.
spk_0
And so yeah, but she anyway, she's in it.
spk_0
And it's just like this is when I watched it as an adult, like recently in recent years,
spk_0
I was like, oh my gosh, that's I lean Davidson.
spk_0
Like I had no idea.
spk_0
But anyway, so that movie traumatized us as kids.
spk_0
And so the other old ones that I just have to mention, we have to mention the shining classic
spk_0
pet cemetery, which haven't seen that one.
spk_0
We I should hate this one.
spk_0
I should hate this one.
spk_0
And I loved the book.
spk_0
It might be my favorite Stephen King book.
spk_0
And I do like the novel.
spk_0
What's really funny, there's an old guy in it.
spk_0
It turns out that the guy who plays the old guy is John Lithgow.
spk_0
And I love him.
spk_0
And I didn't realize, like, I think they, I really going to need to rewatch it.
spk_0
I feel like they do makeup or something because he was not that old in the early 80s or late 70s.
spk_0
So he's in that one.
spk_0
And then carry so creepy.
spk_0
I have seen that years and years and years ago.
spk_0
What I will tell you that the movie does not go as much off the rails as the book.
spk_0
The book at the end is one of those where you're like, Stephen King, what are you doing?
spk_0
A lot of drugs.
spk_0
I mean, it just gets there's a lot of stuff with electricity.
spk_0
And I'm like, okay, we're really going sciencey here.
spk_0
Like, and that was his first book.
spk_0
Oh, yeah, that's true.
spk_0
So maybe that's why I don't know.
spk_0
All right, what other ones do we want to talk about?
spk_0
Because I have like, I have a ton more.
spk_0
I have a, I have two that I really want to talk about that they're funny.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
I had not seen either of these until I went on a writer's retreat a couple years ago.
spk_0
And they're like, you haven't seen this.
spk_0
You have to watch this.
spk_0
So Sean of the dead.
spk_0
Oh, yeah.
spk_0
I have not seen it.
spk_0
It's hilarious.
spk_0
It's Simon Pegg and Nick Frost.
spk_0
And I had seen Hot Fuzz years ago, which is also a hilarious.
spk_0
Movie that you should probably watch.
spk_0
Love it.
spk_0
But I guess it's part of a trilogy with Hot Fuzz, Sean of the dead.
spk_0
And there's another one that I can't remember.
spk_0
Danny and I watched it recently, but name it skates me.
spk_0
But this one, the main character, Simon's character.
spk_0
He is in a like horrible job in a sales position.
spk_0
He lives with a roommate.
spk_0
And then his best friend kind of just stays there who is Nick Frost.
spk_0
His girlfriend dumps him.
spk_0
And the very next day is his zombie apocalypse.
spk_0
And they find out about the zombie apocalypse because there's a girl out in their garden.
spk_0
And they think like, oh, she must be really drunk.
spk_0
Oh, gosh.
spk_0
They go out there and they're kind of making fun of her.
spk_0
And then it turns out she's a zombie.
spk_0
And it's just really funny.
spk_0
But they decide that they need to go rescue his recently ex-girlfriend Liz
spk_0
and then also to rescue Simon Pegg's mom who is played by a Penelope Wilton.
spk_0
Who that is?
spk_0
If you if you watched Dr. Who, if you said, if you watched Dr. Who,
spk_0
then I would know it's she's Harriet Jones.
spk_0
But they go and they rescue first the mom and the mom and his stepdad are there.
spk_0
And the stepdad has been bitten and is turning into a zombie.
spk_0
So it's kind of funny.
spk_0
And then they go to go get his ex-girlfriend Liz and they plan to go to this bar.
spk_0
That's like the whole plan.
spk_0
But all of this crazy stuff happens along the way.
spk_0
And it's just it's just a really funny movie.
spk_0
It's endearing.
spk_0
It's funny.
spk_0
Very good for teenagers because it has a lot of fast action.
spk_0
And then also just teenager comedy.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
And the other one that I had never seen.
spk_0
It came out in 2010 though is Tucker and Dale versus Evil.
spk_0
I've not seen it.
spk_0
Dale is Tyler Labeen and Tucker is Alan Tudick.
spk_0
Which I love him.
spk_0
I love Alan Tudick.
spk_0
So I was like, I can't believe I haven't seen this.
spk_0
And Tucker and Dale are hillbillies in West Virginia.
spk_0
And a group of college kids are going to go camping in West Virginia.
spk_0
They stop at a gas station and Tucker and Dale are there getting gas.
spk_0
They're going to go fix up a cabin.
spk_0
And they see these college kids.
spk_0
And Dale starts talking to one of the girls.
spk_0
He tries to but he's really awkward about it.
spk_0
And kind of scares her and the friends.
spk_0
They all leave.
spk_0
Tucker and Dale go up to the cabin, start working on it.
spk_0
And they decided to go fishing while they're fishing.
spk_0
The college kids decided to go skinny dipping.
spk_0
The girl that he had talked to, Alison falls, hits her head.
spk_0
And Tucker and Dale rescue her to go back to the cabin.
spk_0
And the college kids think that she's been kidnapped.
spk_0
So then they go and try to rescue her.
spk_0
But all this stuff happens and they end up killing themselves.
spk_0
But then all the other college kids think that Tucker and Dale are killing their friends.
spk_0
Oh no.
spk_0
So it's just like, it's horribly funny.
spk_0
It's so funny.
spk_0
But it's definitely one to watch.
spk_0
And different than yeah, a lot of scary movies.
spk_0
So if you have someone that's not into scary scary,
spk_0
that's a good one to watch.
spk_0
All right.
spk_0
Well, I have a lot from when we were like teenagers and young,
spk_0
okay, we'll start with the screen franchise, which I love.
spk_0
Scree.
spk_0
I mean, the first one is just iconic because my daughter is all about scream right now.
spk_0
Well, I think it helps that the first one came out when Lina and I were freshmen in high school.
spk_0
So like we literally grew up with this franchise.
spk_0
And it's so, so good.
spk_0
And if you don't know, that's ghost face people.
spk_0
If you don't know what screen is, but they're still making movies.
spk_0
So surely you know, that's the ghost face ones.
spk_0
And the original one, because I feel like the kids don't watch
spk_0
the earlier ones as much like they like to watch.
spk_0
Because they get it.
spk_0
They want the people that they know who they are.
spk_0
But I think the hyper likes the newer ones.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
I mean, I get it.
spk_0
But so the premise originally was a year after her mother's death,
spk_0
Cindy Prescott played by Neve Campbell and her friends started experiencing some strange phone calls.
spk_0
They later learned the calls were coming from a craze serial killer and a white face mask
spk_0
in a large black robe.
spk_0
Looking for revenge as phone calls usually consist of many questions.
spk_0
The main one being what's your favorite scary movie,
spk_0
along with much scary movie trivia, any with bloody pieces of innocent lives scattered around
spk_0
the small town of Woodsboro.
spk_0
But I think that's what made it fun is like it is funny too.
spk_0
Like it's not like the dying, that's the part isn't.
spk_0
But there's quotes from so many movies that were popular at the time or other horror movie franchises.
spk_0
It's amazing.
spk_0
And this was a stacked cast because we had Neve Campbell,
spk_0
Rose McGowan, Drew Barrymore, Courtney Cox, David Arquette, Jamie Kennedy,
spk_0
Skeet, Orange and Matthew Lillard.
spk_0
And I don't know if you love it.
spk_0
I love Matthew Lillard.
spk_0
I know.
spk_0
You know what's funny?
spk_0
You're going to you're going to love die when I say this.
spk_0
He tried out for the part of Billy and was rejected because they said that
spk_0
Neve Campbell would never like her care like that beautiful woman would never go out with someone
spk_0
that looked like him and they ended up dating because they met for the movie.
spk_0
So it's so funny that he was not but he's so funny.
spk_0
He's so good.
spk_0
But I don't know if you know this, but Drew Barrymore, they approach her.
spk_0
They wanted her to play Sydney Prescott.
spk_0
And she said no, that she she wouldn't into be someone that was killed.
spk_0
And so when the movie was and she wanted to be like a surprise, like build her as a top person.
spk_0
So they did they built her as like number one.
spk_0
Yes.
spk_0
Like she was all over the trailer.
spk_0
And so you don't realize.
spk_0
And so it was such a big surprise when she's the first person killed well, her boyfriend
spk_0
technically.
spk_0
But you know, it just was shocking because no one saw that coming because at the time,
spk_0
she was the biggest star attached to this movie.
spk_0
And yeah, I think a lot of them didn't get their starts here, but this kind of propelled them.
spk_0
And propelled their careers because yeah, because Courtney Cox was her friends.
spk_0
She was on friends and before that, she was on family ties.
spk_0
And David Arquette was from an iconic family, but still.
spk_0
GB Kennedy was on party of five party of five.
spk_0
Yeah, Rose McGowan.
spk_0
I think this was before her days on Charmed.
spk_0
But this might have been was she dating Marilyn Manson at this time?
spk_0
I don't know.
spk_0
I thought she was dating him while Charmed was on.
spk_0
So maybe that was later.
spk_0
Yeah, I don't know.
spk_0
But anyway, so that that was crazy.
spk_0
Then scream too.
spk_0
I just want to share who the like who was added to the cast for this.
spk_0
So we have Jada Pinkett Smith before she was really famous.
spk_0
Omar Epps, Jerry O'Connell, Sarah Michelle Geller has a small part.
spk_0
By the way, on the phone, the friend that she's talking to is Selma Blair's voice.
spk_0
Rebecca Gay Heart, Joshua Jackson, Timothy Ola Fant or Ola Fon Harvey say,
spk_0
Laurie Metcalf, they're all in this.
spk_0
And then on top of that, by the way, there's a party scene where Matthew Lillard is in there
spk_0
because he was still dating.
spk_0
Neff Campbell, I think.
spk_0
And like he took you get like a side view of his face.
spk_0
Like it's at a sorority party.
spk_0
It's so awesome.
spk_0
But then in the second movie, they're making a movie of the events from the first movie
spk_0
because Gail Weathers played by Courtney Cox had written a book about it.
spk_0
So in the movie, in the movie, the people,
spk_0
Oh, a leaf shrieber also, Shriver Harvey say he also is in it.
spk_0
I forgot about that.
spk_0
Like he's in it because he's caught in where he was in the first one technically,
spk_0
but just in like news clips.
spk_0
So in the movie inside the movie, we've got Heather Graham, who placed
spk_0
Drew Barrymore's character, Tori Spelling plays Neff Campbell, which she made a joke in the first
spk_0
movie, if they made a movie about her, that they probably picked Tori Spelling.
spk_0
So that was in there.
spk_0
David Schwimmer plays, oh, what's his name?
spk_0
David Arquette's role, Dewey.
spk_0
And then Luke Wilson plays Billy.
spk_0
And so it's like, you have kind of these other big actors in this fake movie.
spk_0
So yeah, so then that one, and that one takes place in college.
spk_0
And then Scream 3 is ever college.
spk_0
Did you get around to seeing Scream 3?
spk_0
No, I don't.
spk_0
I saw Scream 2 like when it came out.
spk_0
Yeah, like that's a long time ago.
spk_0
Still trying to get Lena to watch Scream 3 because for me, it goes Scream 1,
spk_0
Scream 3, Scream 2, Scream 3, just the people they bring in.
spk_0
Kelly Rutherford, who was, if you don't know who that is, from Gossip Girl, the mom,
spk_0
Patrick Dempsey, Scott Foley, Dion Richmond, which you would probably recognize him,
spk_0
Jenny McCarthy, Heather Madderazzo, Carrie Fisher, Emily Morton,
spk_0
Mortimer, and Parker Posey.
spk_0
Oh, and the guy, I don't think it's on here.
spk_0
I don't have him.
spk_0
The guy, if you watch, rules of engagement.
spk_0
If you watched it, that one of the husband, the guy who plays Jeff, he also was in,
spk_0
if you watched a series of unfortunate events, he was like the narrator.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
Anyway, so that's Scream 3.
spk_0
Now, I've also seen, I think only six are out.
spk_0
I've seen them all.
spk_0
I just want to say one last thing about this franchise.
spk_0
Scream 4, at the time when it came out, the intro thing was iconic,
spk_0
because basically the way it starts is it's like you see people watching a movie
spk_0
and then someone gets killed and then it's like, oh, they're watching a movie.
spk_0
And then they get killed and they go, it's kind of like movie inside a movie inside a movie.
spk_0
But all the pairs are people who were on popular TV shows at the time.
spk_0
So like, so like it had people like the remake of 90210,
spk_0
they had like characters from that.
spk_0
Then they had one where it was like from True Blood, like,
spk_0
Anapakwan was on there.
spk_0
And so like, that's what was like now it would be less iconic if the kid watched it,
spk_0
because I'm like, I don't get it.
spk_0
But at the time, all these people were on popular shows.
spk_0
So it's kind of cool.
spk_0
But yeah, and I've seen the others and they're fine.
spk_0
But, you know,
spk_0
we were talking with my mom about watching a movie for Halloween,
spk_0
like having a movie night.
spk_0
And I was like, her one of her favorite movies is Zombieland.
spk_0
And she was like, do you think the kids would know who Bill Maria's?
spk_0
And I'm like, no, I don't.
spk_0
Yeah, but no, no.
spk_0
All right, I got more.
spk_0
You know, this is really my genre kind of apparently.
spk_0
So we might have to wrap it up.
spk_0
Okay, let me just talk about a few more.
spk_0
Okay, let me just mention ones that came out also like when we were younger.
spk_0
Okay, I know what you did last summer, that franchise, urban legend, the craft,
spk_0
the faculty.
spk_0
And then I have not talked about, this is the last ones I have to talk about,
spk_0
the Halloween franchise, which the first Halloween,
spk_0
I will have to tell you all a story about.
spk_0
I saw it for the first time and it was like a Friday night or something.
spk_0
It's dark.
spk_0
My the house that I lived in in high school had like a sun room where it was like Florida
spk_0
ceiling almost like glass.
spk_0
And it was so at night, it was dark.
spk_0
You couldn't see out.
spk_0
I'm watching it out there.
spk_0
Okay, whatever.
spk_0
Next night I go to babysit.
spk_0
And the family that I was babysitting for when I get there, they tell me, okay,
spk_0
the backdoor is not always catching.
spk_0
So don't be alarmed if it like opens.
spk_0
Now in hindsight, I'm like, why didn't they just put a chair against it?
spk_0
Why didn't I put a chair against it?
spk_0
So that's how the night starts.
spk_0
It's daylight, you know, whatever.
spk_0
Kids and I eat dinner.
spk_0
We go upstairs because they had a family room.
spk_0
And so when we would go upstairs, we turn off the lights.
spk_0
Like that's was kind of the expectation.
spk_0
Turn off the lights, go upstairs.
spk_0
So I'm upstairs with the kids.
spk_0
We play until bedtime.
spk_0
They get in bed and I am they were allowed to read for a little bit
spk_0
until they, you know, then fall asleep.
spk_0
So I would stay upstairs in the game room until they fell asleep.
spk_0
And I they had a TV in there.
spk_0
So I can watch TV.
spk_0
And then I would go downstairs after that and wait for the parents either get a snack,
spk_0
watch the TV down there, read my book, you know, whatever.
spk_0
So I go downstairs after the kids are asleep and you know, it's dark now.
spk_0
And I am like turning, I turn on like the hall light to go to the back of the house
spk_0
where the kitchen, like kind of like the great room.
spk_0
And I turn on the light for that room in the back door is wide open.
spk_0
Would be so freaky as a teenager too.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
So I freak out.
spk_0
I close it.
spk_0
I put a chair there.
spk_0
I call my parents.
spk_0
By the way, they look like two streets, we live two streets over.
spk_0
Can you please come over here and they're like, no,
spk_0
we're like, this is in Highland Park by the way.
spk_0
They're like, no one has come in that house.
spk_0
So I sat there like all night staring at the back door.
spk_0
Can we?
spk_0
Can that someone head?
spk_0
Yes.
spk_0
And so and I'm pretty sure we're sharing at the back door.
spk_0
They would have already been inside.
spk_0
But I was like, just in case like I was sitting where I could see every
spk_0
entrance into this room.
spk_0
And so then like they got home and I told them about it.
spk_0
I think they were like, oh, maybe he's over here.
spk_0
Like, you know, just kind of teasing me about it.
spk_0
But anyway, so that happened.
spk_0
That was in high school.
spk_0
And Halloween is Michael Myers, right?
spk_0
Michael Myers.
spk_0
And that is the one.
spk_0
If you so let me read the blurb so that because people might not know
spk_0
because it's older.
spk_0
I haven't seen it.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
The year is 1963, the night Halloween.
spk_0
Police are called to 43 Lincoln Lane.
spk_0
Only to discover that 15 year old Judith Myers has been stabbed to death by her
spk_0
six year old brother Michael.
spk_0
After being institutionalized for 15 years,
spk_0
Myers breaks out on the night before Halloween.
spk_0
No one knows nor wants to find out what will happen on October 31st, 1978.
spk_0
Besides Myers psychiatrist, Dr. Luma.
spk_0
He knows Michael is coming back to Hadamfield.
spk_0
But by the time the town realizes it, it's too late for many people.
spk_0
And um,
spk_0
so yeah, no idea what it was even about.
spk_0
I just know.
spk_0
Well, so this is why
spk_0
babysitting was also it was like part of like, oh my gosh.
spk_0
Jamie Lee Curtis was babysitting that night when he's stalking them.
spk_0
Her friend is too.
spk_0
By the way, in this movie, very young Kyle Richards of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.
spk_0
Also, Paris Hilton.
spk_0
Okay, this one.
spk_0
I know.
spk_0
Paris Hilton's aunt.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
That helps.
spk_0
No.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
Anyway, so she was a child star.
spk_0
So she was in there as a little girl.
spk_0
She also was in escape to which mountain played the younger version of her of her older sister,
spk_0
Kim Richards, who started it.
spk_0
But anyway, so they're babysitting.
spk_0
So that's part of the connection to why I'm babysitting them thinking,
spk_0
my mom is gonna come get me.
spk_0
But I cannot stand that costume.
spk_0
If I see someone dressed as him like with the mask, especially my heart kind of starts racing.
spk_0
But anyway, this one was traumatic.
spk_0
But I love it.
spk_0
And I will say there's like 50 million of these movies.
spk_0
I've seen the first two.
spk_0
Then I saw Halloween H2O.
spk_0
And I saw the three that came out in the last or two of the three that came out in the last
spk_0
several years.
spk_0
And they're okay.
spk_0
But Halloween H2O we have this is the last one.
spk_0
I know Lane is like, we gotta stop talking.
spk_0
Halloween H2O came out 20 years later.
spk_0
And that one was the one released when we're in high school.
spk_0
And it takes place 20 years later.
spk_0
And so 20 years after Michael Myers, Massacure, Massacure, it's not a manicure.
spk_0
Massacre and Haddonfield, Lori Strobe, Fakerown, death,
spk_0
traveled to California and took on the identity of Cari Tate.
spk_0
Michael discovers Lori's a new identity and travels to California to kill his sister.
spk_0
Lori must now take on her brother with her son's life at stake.
spk_0
Okay, this is the part that I forgot.
spk_0
You, so this picks up after Halloween 2.
spk_0
Halloween 2, we find out why he's going after Jamie Lee Curtis.
spk_0
It's something that either his parents adopted or had her after he went to the mental institution.
spk_0
And so, or she was like, young, I don't know.
spk_0
And so he came back to kill his sister.
spk_0
So anyway, so they show up and she's working this private school.
spk_0
But here's who's in it.
spk_0
That would mean anything to us.
spk_0
Okay, we've got Michelle Williams.
spk_0
Joseph Gordon, love it.
spk_0
He has kind of a small part.
spk_0
Jody Leno Keefe, which if you don't know who she is,
spk_0
and she's all that, she was the girl who won like prom queen, who's like the bitchy one.
spk_0
And then, then we have LL Cool J.
spk_0
Janet Lee, who is Jamie Lee Curtis' mom, has a cameo as a teacher.
spk_0
And she was the person in psycho.
spk_0
Yeah, and she's person in psycho.
spk_0
So, then Josh Hartnet, this is his first film.
spk_0
And then this, you might not, if you haven't seen the first one,
spk_0
the girl who played the nurse in the first one, Nancy Stevens, she plays the nurse in this one as well.
spk_0
This is the shortest of the Halloween movies.
spk_0
Like, I think it's less than 90 minutes.
spk_0
This one's very gory.
spk_0
I will tell you that has some things that I'm like, oh my gosh.
spk_0
Like, no, the H201.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
But what I think is really cool near the end,
spk_0
Jamie Lee Curtis sends her son and his girlfriend, who are the only survivors of their friends,
spk_0
their friends all get killed, to go, like, take the car and go down the street.
spk_0
And she says like, go to the beckers.
spk_0
The beckers were the people from screen.
spk_0
That was Drew Barry Morris character, she was KC Becker.
spk_0
And so it's a nod to the screen franchise.
spk_0
Oh, that's cool.
spk_0
So yeah, so there we tied it all back to they're all connected, all connected.
spk_0
You know, I love my universes.
spk_0
I know.
spk_0
They're all connected.
spk_0
Okay, dude, I could probably go through and bring connections to all these people and all
spk_0
of these.
spk_0
But Lena won't let me keep talking about this.
spk_0
So I have to edit.
spk_0
We'll save it for next year.
spk_0
We'll have another.
spk_0
We'll do another episode.
spk_0
Maybe we'll watch more scary movies.
spk_0
So we have new, maybe we can watch some of the, I want to watch the, is it parasite?
spk_0
I don't know, but that does not sound.
spk_0
Is that like a invasion of the body stature that I could do?
spk_0
No, it's, it's like a, I don't even know what it's about.
spk_0
But the cover has like all the people's eyes have like a black box on them.
spk_0
Okay, maybe we each get to pick a couple.
spk_0
Maybe we veto a couple.
spk_0
I don't know.
spk_0
You're like, that one's out.
spk_0
I mean, I don't know.
spk_0
I'll try it, you know.
spk_0
One of the things I did notice is that a lot of the scary movies aren't on streaming platforms.
spk_0
No, until October.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
They pick them up in October.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
So and some of them may take off.
spk_0
So you have to buy them in October.
spk_0
Oh, those jerks.
spk_0
I know.
spk_0
But anyway, no, I, this was, this was fun for me because like, it's funny.
spk_0
I don't really like scary movies anymore, but I will watch the ones.
spk_0
I'll watch the most of these that I grew up with.
spk_0
I prefer murderers, not evil spirits or ghosts or anything like that.
spk_0
I don't know what we're talking about next week.
spk_0
I know spirits and ghosts and all things paranormal.
spk_0
I'm excited for it.
spk_0
Which Lena loves.
spk_0
I can do it a little bit.
spk_0
But then I get real freaked out at 3 a.m.
spk_0
Because of the stupid movie, the exorcism of Emily Rose that I watched.
spk_0
Like this.
spk_0
Like that.
spk_0
You were, you were Derek in the movie theater.
spk_0
I was Derek in the movie theater.
spk_0
This was before my ex has been and I were married.
spk_0
We were engaged.
spk_0
And he was so annoyed.
spk_0
He's like, why did we pay to go to that when you wouldn't even watch it?
spk_0
But I will never forget 3 a.m. was the devil's hour.
spk_0
So if I wake up at 3 a.m.
spk_0
I'm like, oh my god, it's the devil's hour.
spk_0
There's ghosts or demons or something.
spk_0
Because when I was pregnant, I woke up like every at 3 a.m.
spk_0
Which, which pregnancy of both?
spk_0
Just Danny.
spk_0
Just Danny.
spk_0
So maybe he's my water, my water broke at 3 a.m.
spk_0
Of course it did.
spk_0
Well, you should have named him like Damien or something.
spk_0
I'm just a Lucifer.
spk_0
Lucifer.
spk_0
There we go.
spk_0
I don't know.
spk_0
Call him Lucy.
spk_0
Like they didn't house in the seroliancy.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
I mean,
spk_0
just saying, although I will say, because the cat is named Lucifer and Cinderella.
spk_0
But then the mouse calls it the cute little mouse calls it Rousseffy.
spk_0
And I was like, Rousseffy is a cute name.
spk_0
But I could not name a cat that because I'd be the
spk_0
again, it's really Lucifer.
spk_0
Lucifer.
spk_0
But Rousseffy.
spk_0
Lucifer, that's such a fun name.
spk_0
That is fun.
spk_0
Anyway.
spk_0
All right.
spk_0
Well, friends, we'll see you next time.
spk_0
Until then, have a good time.
spk_0
Enjoy your reading.
spk_0
Bye.
