spk_0 Welcome to Da Ha Chinese History and Culture Podcast.
spk_0 Here we are offering you the constructional Chinese history and what's the thoughts,
spk_0 origins and background knowledge behind the stories.
spk_0 We also provide several Chinese contemporaries related with the story to help you understand and memorize.
spk_0 Let's get started!
spk_0 Hello everyone, I'm Jiu, the co-host of the Chinese language teacher in Da Ha Chinese.
spk_0 Hi, I'm Caroline, I'm the father of Da Ha Chinese.
spk_0 Today we're going to discuss a very important figure in Chinese history, who saved countless lives.
spk_0 His name is Yui, also known as the Great Yui.
spk_0 That's right.
spk_0 He is the ancestor of the first royal family in ancient Chinese history by passing his throne
spk_0 to his son Qi established the Xia dynasty as the first dynasty.
spk_0 And why the dynasty Xia is called Xia is actually from its tribe's name.
spk_0 It is the Xia Hou Xu, so the Xia dynasty is faced on their tribe's name.
spk_0 Yes, before yu, the throne was given to the most talented individual,
spk_0 rather than the leader's own son.
spk_0 This means that Yui initiated the system of hereditary succession.
spk_0 Ji Chen, right?
spk_0 We talked about this in last episode.
spk_0 Yeah, it's the Shui Xi Ji Chen.
spk_0 Oh wow, at a very high level, yeah, sentence.
spk_0 So at this, according to the version of historical books that influenced the by Kung Fu Shanida,
spk_0 he is the first one.
spk_0 Yes, as we mentioned earlier,
spk_0 Confucius added a story to make his philosophy more widely accepted and believable.
spk_0 Yeah, actually Qi was also one of the prings that supported by many tribes.
spk_0 So he actually prioritized blood relations over the system of Shanjiang.
spk_0 However, Qi is also a very good ruler at that time.
spk_0 Yeah, I think it's just happened that the Yuzheng, Qi, is also very capable to rule the tribe.
spk_0 Yeah, okay.
spk_0 So even today, we still hear stories about yu, or the great yu, Ba-yu.
spk_0 Yes, he must have done something right to be remembered and recorded by Confucius.
spk_0 From a positive perspective.
spk_0 Those who strongly adhere to Confucianism might want to pay our podcast.
spk_0 But given that Yuzheng successfully resolved a problem,
spk_0 there is no doubt he naturally gained power over the tribes and eventually became the ruler of
spk_0 the first dynasty.
spk_0 Before we dive into today's story,
spk_0 let's introduce the three keywords in the story.
spk_0 The first one,
spk_0 means the flood.
spk_0 Ren-u means mission.
spk_0 The third one,
spk_0 the first,
spk_0 Hong Shui,
spk_0 the flood.
spk_0 The story of the name was actually really interesting.
spk_0 Let's see the word
spk_0 home on the left side.
spk_0 The redical, with three dots,
spk_0 represents the water.
spk_0 And the right part is
spk_0 Hong, which was a name of the flood that we managed to place.
spk_0 So the word home was actually means the flood in the Gong province.
spk_0 And now we call the flood in Chinese, Hong Shui.
spk_0 Yeah, the pronunciation of Gong and Hong is quite similar.
spk_0 And also the Gong means together.
spk_0 So we can also explain this as all the tribes at that time were suffered together
spk_0 Gong Tong by the Hong Shui.
spk_0 You can hear the similar pronunciation of Gong and Hong.
spk_0 Next is Ren-u mission.
spk_0 We say
spk_0 一个人物, a mission.
spk_0 I have a mission.
spk_0 Yeah, there's a movie series act by
spk_0 Palm Cruise, which is
spk_0 不可能的人物,
spk_0 we should be possible.
spk_0 Last one is
spk_0 治理,
spk_0 to manage,
spk_0 or management.
spk_0 Please take note that when using the word
spk_0 治理,
spk_0 should only be in a public and related situation.
spk_0 We could say
spk_0 宇,
spk_0 that makes the life of people
spk_0 人民,
spk_0 better.
spk_0 So we can say
spk_0 大雨治理,
spk_0 宇,
spk_0 让人民有更好的生活,
spk_0 the 大雨,
spk_0 manage the flood,
spk_0 makes people a better life.
spk_0 Okay, so we have the three words.
spk_0 The first one,
spk_0 宇,
spk_0 the flood.
spk_0 任,
spk_0 物,
spk_0 mission.
spk_0 治理,
spk_0 to manage,
spk_0 or management.
spk_0 Now, let's get into the story.
spk_0 It was around 3,000 BC
spk_0 when Great Flood
spk_0 宫水,
spk_0 pliked the China,
spk_0 with torrential rains
spk_0 of merging entire hills and valleys.
spk_0 Year after year,
spk_0 masses of people were left homeless
spk_0 and forced to flee to mountain tops.
spk_0 No one knew how to tackle with flood.
spk_0 宫水,
spk_0 and no one could handle this mission.
spk_0 Perhaps only God could manage,
spk_0 治理,
spk_0 this headache.
spk_0 After relentless urging from his advisors,
spk_0 Emperor Yao appointed a distant relative named
spk_0 滚,
spk_0 to take this mission,
spk_0 任,
spk_0 the Emperor Yao told滚,
spk_0 to manage,
spk_0 治理,
spk_0 beyond going flood.
spk_0 宫水,
spk_0 滚,
spk_0 spent nine years building dams
spk_0 and dikes to barricade the waters.
spk_0 But his efforts were to know of ale.
spk_0 The flood,
spk_0 宫水,
spk_0 continue to rise higher and higher.
spk_0 It seemed unstoppable.
spk_0 During this time,
spk_0 the aging Emperor Yao chose his successor,
spk_0 順,
spk_0 after,
spk_0 順,
spk_0 exceeded to the throne,
spk_0 he toured his kingdom and found,
spk_0 滚,
spk_0 was incapable of managing,
spk_0 治理,
spk_0 the flood.
spk_0 宫水,
spk_0 滚,
spk_0 was disposed of,
spk_0 and his son,
spk_0 大雨,
spk_0 was put in his place to continue this impossible mission.
spk_0 任務,
spk_0 任務,
spk_0 he thoroughly changed his father's methods.
spk_0 He personally traveled the entire country
spk_0 with a select group of aides to study geography,
spk_0 measure elevation,
spk_0 and mark down river channels.
spk_0 He worked with ordinary people to dredge the riverbeds,
spk_0 opening river courses,
spk_0 and allowed flood,
spk_0 宫水,
spk_0 to drain into the ocean.
spk_0 Furthermore,
spk_0 he also built a system of canals,
spk_0 so the waters could irrigate the farmer's fields.
spk_0 大雨,
spk_0 staunchly continued this mission,
spk_0 任務,
spk_0 for 13 years.
spk_0 It was said that he soaked so long in muddy waters,
spk_0 that all the hairs on his legs rubbed off.
spk_0 He worked so long under the scalding sun that his skin was
spk_0 tanned to a very dark brown.
spk_0 He shoveled so long,
spk_0 dredging riverbeds that his hands were calced beyond recognition.
spk_0 But after 13 unflagging years,
spk_0 the flood,
spk_0 宫水,
spk_0 that had troubled two generations,
spk_0 was successfully managed 汁里.
spk_0 The management 汁里,
spk_0 of the flood 洪水,
spk_0 reminds me of a famous story in the Bible,
spk_0 the flood at the Ark of Noah.
spk_0 Yeah, there are numerous ancient records that talk about the flood,
spk_0 宫水,
spk_0 and we don't know if they occurred in the same era,
spk_0 but flood 宫水,
spk_0 stories exist in ancient China,
spk_0 ancient Babylonian,
spk_0 and Christian stories.
spk_0 So, Jill, would you like to share the story of Noah with us?
spk_0 Sure, the story goes like this.
spk_0 One day,
spk_0 the God in Heaven.
spk_0 Couldn't take it anymore.
spk_0 Became angry with the people,
spk_0 because they were doing many bad things for a long time,
spk_0 like they raw,
spk_0 they fight,
spk_0 and lie to everyone.
spk_0 So, he was sad and decided to destroy the people.
spk_0 However, there was one good person,
spk_0 named Noah,
spk_0 who badly respected God,
spk_0 and obeyed his command.
spk_0 Noah and his family were chosen to be saved.
spk_0 Well, God wanted to kill people.
spk_0 Well, the concept is somewhat similar to the idea of Heaven, isn't it?
spk_0 In Chinese history,
spk_0 if an emperor was deemed unfit for his position,
spk_0 natural disaster would occur.
spk_0 See, yeah, I see.
spk_0 The mandate of Heaven,
spk_0 PM Ming, right?
spk_0 So, have people tried to find evidence of the flood Hong Shui?
spk_0 Yeah, I think in a part of the world,
spk_0 I don't really remember exactly where,
spk_0 but they discovered the art,
spk_0 and the other historical things about the flood.
spk_0 Wow, this sounds amazing!
spk_0 Similarly,
spk_0 the Yu in China,
spk_0 the Tai in China,
spk_0 some people have also tried to find evidence of the flood.
spk_0 They have prospered various explanations
spk_0 for the presence of similar flood stories,
spk_0 Hong Shui,
spk_0 in different cultures.
spk_0 For China,
spk_0 the Yellow River, Huang He,
spk_0 is considered their mother river.
spk_0 But it carries a significant amount of sediment,
spk_0 causing it to accumulate and become higher
spk_0 than the surrounding buildings.
spk_0 Wow, that's impressive.
spk_0 So you mean that there was a river higher
spk_0 than people's houses?
spk_0 Oh, yeah, it does sound dangerous.
spk_0 However, the river doesn't flow over the houses,
spk_0 otherwise everything could be the river, right?
spk_0 So the river is situated on land
spk_0 that has accumulated sediment over time,
spk_0 making it higher.
spk_0 For example, my ancestors probably didn't think
spk_0 it was higher than their house,
spk_0 but over time,
spk_0 it gradually became higher and higher.
spk_0 Eventually, it can even surpass the height of a large house.
spk_0 In fact, currently,
spk_0 it is already 10 meters higher than the city for now.
spk_0 That doesn't sound fine at all,
spk_0 and it's extremely dangerous.
spk_0 What if the ding breaks?
spk_0 People living nearby would drown.
spk_0 It's not just drawing.
spk_0 You can calculate how many floors it is higher than the city.
spk_0 On average, a floor is about three meters tall,
spk_0 so if the dam were to break,
spk_0 people below the third floor would likely die.
spk_0 I have helped many social studies teachers develop
spk_0 their Chinese culture classes,
spk_0 and there's a very specific term in the textbook
spk_0 called Chinese Sorrow,
spk_0 referring to the floods, Hengshui,
spk_0 and the Yellow River things.
spk_0 Interesting.
spk_0 Why would American textbooks
spk_0 discuss this?
spk_0 They include it when introducing the geography of China.
spk_0 I believe it's crucial for students to learn more about the world.
spk_0 If they want to explore Asia further,
spk_0 it's very important to talk about Chinese history.
spk_0 Geography is a part of what influences history.
spk_0 By understanding the geography,
spk_0 students can then understand the climate,
spk_0 environment, and the thoughts nurtured by the land,
spk_0 as well as how they spread to the world.
spk_0 We are currently developing an online course
spk_0 to assist teachers in teaching Chinese history and culture.
spk_0 If you are interested,
spk_0 please don't be hesitate to click the link below.
spk_0 Absolutely.
spk_0 It's great material and good stuff,
spk_0 so remember to click the link below
spk_0 to know all the details about the course.
spk_0 I completely agree that our history is closely intertwined
spk_0 with the geography and climate of the place we live.
spk_0 We have conducted extensive research
spk_0 on how English textbooks discuss Chinese history.
spk_0 It's interesting because it gives me a different perspective
spk_0 on our culture and history.
spk_0 However, some ideas are unfamiliar to me
spk_0 because as a Chinese person or a Taiwanese,
spk_0 I'm already immersed in the culture.
spk_0 So, when building the course,
spk_0 I am not only to add more stories to the facts mentioned
spk_0 in the textbooks,
spk_0 but also to provide reflections on present-day issues,
spk_0 including international matters.
spk_0 Apart from the course,
spk_0 I remember you also host workshops
spk_0 to help teachers prepare for their Chinese history lesson.
spk_0 You really want to talk about that?
spk_0 Yeah, so last time we covered the revisionism
spk_0 and Silk Road,
spk_0 they are both very popular topics for those teachers.
spk_0 I know there are more topics
spk_0 that teachers are eager for us to discuss.
spk_0 So, if you are interested in any particular topics,
spk_0 there's a link below as well
spk_0 about our workshop videos.
spk_0 If you're interested,
spk_0 you can also click the link below.
spk_0 That's true.
spk_0 During the previous workshops,
spk_0 I saw the participants on the screen.
spk_0 All the teachers had smiles on their face.
spk_0 That means they were truly satisfied
spk_0 and found the information
spk_0 is shared,
spk_0 available and interesting.
spk_0 It's undoubtedly helpful for their lessons.
spk_0 Yeah, I'm grateful to the active participants
spk_0 and support from the workshop attendees.
spk_0 Alright, that's all for today.
