I believe that interior design should be simple and attainable.
spk_0
Regardless of your budget, lifestyle or skill set, your home should be a reflection of
spk_0
the things you love and the space you can share with the people you love.
spk_0
Interior design isn't just about floor plans, decorating and color selection.
spk_0
It's about the psychology of the space.
spk_0
On learning interior design of Marcy Dennis, you'll learn how to transform your home into
spk_0
a space where you feel confident and comfortable.
spk_0
Let's get started.
spk_0
Hi, I'm Marcy, and you're listening to Episode 6 of Learning Interior Design with Marcy Dennis.
spk_0
Welcome back for Part 2 of Common Design Styles.
spk_0
I'm so excited to have you back again.
spk_0
Thank you so much for joining me.
spk_0
So finding a design style as we've discussed is important when you're trying to figure
spk_0
out what you have going on in your house and where you genuinely want to be.
spk_0
Having a specific style in mind is what helps you create a cohesive design and avoid unnecessary
spk_0
purchases.
spk_0
It's an important first step to any design process.
spk_0
Today, we're talking about Part 2 with the less common design styles, depending upon where
spk_0
you live in the world.
spk_0
Each is unique, beautiful and worth a glance to see if you can incorporate this into your
spk_0
home to add some depth and personality to your style.
spk_0
I'm going to get rolling today because these episodes are longer than I intend from most
spk_0
of my episodes to be just due to the sheer detail.
spk_0
The goes on to just scribing what you can see on my website, Dennis designed interior.com,
spk_0
head on over to the podcast page, scroll down to the show now, and take a look at the
spk_0
these beautiful pictures.
spk_0
Alright, I won't be describing in quite the detail this week, as that makes this show
spk_0
just a little bit longer, like I said, than I wanted to be.
spk_0
So I'll give you a more generic description of what I'm seeing in the pictures that I've
spk_0
picked out for you to visualize this.
spk_0
So first off, I wanted to start off with this organic modern.
spk_0
This is a more niche twist to the straight modern style.
spk_0
This one really incorporates a focus on the natural and organic materials to have a
spk_0
more eco-friendly design.
spk_0
I've got a picture of an entry hall, plain simple black picture frames, simple black frame
spk_0
mirror, and a raw wood table that is just gorgeous.
spk_0
And of course, you've got greenery, a big splash of greenery, and a nice white face going
spk_0
on in here.
spk_0
Key characteristics are plants everywhere.
spk_0
There are natural materials like bamboo and other raw woods, which are used for floors,
spk_0
countertops, containers, and utensils.
spk_0
There's bamboo sheets and other eco-friendly, okotech made and approved linens.
spk_0
There's natural, influenced color palettes, generally in a more muted tone, and straight
spk_0
lines in the furniture paired with soft curves, also in the furniture or the architecture.
spk_0
And if you can't tell about the excitement in my voice, I love this style.
spk_0
Love all the natural influences.
spk_0
The second picture is a super sweet bathroom I found.
spk_0
There's got to be in a high end house.
spk_0
You've got slate on half of a shower and the vanity wall.
spk_0
The other half looks like you'd see their straight bamboo or possibly even teak.
spk_0
You've got a freestanding tub.
spk_0
You have a wall of greenery.
spk_0
You know those walls that just have plants galore vertically.
spk_0
That's what it is in here.
spk_0
There's some track lighting, which is not as classy, but it does a good job of highlighting
spk_0
the features in this room.
spk_0
The next style is a western style.
spk_0
This is a style celebrating the beauty around it often in a desert of country setting.
spk_0
It focuses on durability and warm bright colors, geometric patterns and animals that are
spk_0
all found local to that area.
spk_0
First picture is really like a western, almost like a mid-century modern vibe going on
spk_0
because of the slatting on the wall.
spk_0
So there's some thin wood slats, paint it all one color, a nice charcoal slate gray,
spk_0
and it's at diagonals, like 45 degree diagonals.
spk_0
There's a lot of overlap going on.
spk_0
There is a, I don't know what animal this is.
spk_0
This is not my area of expertise, but some sort of animal with antlers on the wall.
spk_0
It doesn't look like a cow.
spk_0
It looks too small.
spk_0
Maybe it was an infant-twenty-died, which would be so sad.
spk_0
I don't know.
spk_0
We're not going to think about that.
spk_0
It's skull head with antlers on the wall.
spk_0
You've got the black and white and brown color pattern going on for the natural vibes.
spk_0
And then a nice dark accent wall.
spk_0
Cake characteristics are large, rough wood and front features, large stonework, thick
spk_0
upholstery with a focus on leather, jeweled-tone color pellet with plenty of creams and blacks,
spk_0
and specific geometric patterns.
spk_0
You've got a lot of triangles and diamonds going on in this style.
spk_0
So the second picture looks like it might be an entryway or the edge of a kitchen.
spk_0
There is a wall tree with storage underneath all wood, a lot of black going on.
spk_0
You've got your snake plants.
spk_0
You've got those bright oranges and teals that you find.
spk_0
You've got creams and blacks.
spk_0
You've got those diamond patterns.
spk_0
Got the natural, Rodgles going on, the natural materials.
spk_0
Just screams Western India.
spk_0
Another style we have is industrial.
spk_0
This style places a high priority on functionality and simplicity.
spk_0
It is often found in more urban areas, commonly warehouse districts.
spk_0
It accentuates the raw materials like brick, concrete and exposed deckwork that are already part of the building.
spk_0
First picture I have is a really cool, it's usually looks like a straight warehouse at one point in time,
spk_0
but way cleaner.
spk_0
Living space.
spk_0
You've got a almost checkered feeling rug on the floor, but it's mostly circles.
spk_0
There is raw wood on the ground, there is raw brick on the walls.
spk_0
The roof is the metal roof you see.
spk_0
The metal trusses that are the framework of the roof are fully exposed.
spk_0
You've got highlight glasses.
spk_0
There's a lofted area with some very structural railing going across.
spk_0
There's a lot of pictures, a lot of black, a lot of wood, warm tones coming from this picture.
spk_0
The cake characteristics are the raw wood, the black metal and the concrete.
spk_0
These are defining elements of this style.
spk_0
There's exposed bricks and deckwork.
spk_0
You'll see that in a lot of coffee shops they're trying to be super trendy.
spk_0
There's a warm color palette for accents.
spk_0
It's used mostly neutral colors, but you've got some warm pops in there.
spk_0
It's a sleek but minimal furniture.
spk_0
You see a lot of Edison bulbs, metals, dark pendants, sculptural fixtures and task lamps.
spk_0
Those are key.
spk_0
My second picture has got a different take on it.
spk_0
Very bright lights.
spk_0
It looks like you're up on the second or third floor of something very high.
spk_0
Ceilings, these have got to be like 15, 20 foot ceilings.
spk_0
There's a lot of raw and I don't know if it's wood or metal that has a super weathered look to it.
spk_0
The wall that you see is very rough.
spk_0
Probably a plaster concrete.
spk_0
The floors look like they're just a straight white gray colored concrete.
spk_0
Big black windows.
spk_0
There's a bunch of little squares on it.
spk_0
I can see evidence of deckwork being exposed.
spk_0
Three pendant lights hanging from a long metal pole
spk_0
over the dining table, which has black metal chairs and slow profile wood seats to it.
spk_0
You've got a camel color, camel colored leather sofa.
spk_0
You've got some greenery.
spk_0
You've got all the right ingredients for this beautiful industrial space.
spk_0
Next is one I also really enjoy.
spk_0
It's the art deco style.
spk_0
It's a design style that started in the 30s.
spk_0
It took the visual arts world by storm in all aspects from architecture to interior,
spk_0
jewelry, art, fashion and so much more.
spk_0
It is elegant and opulent in every way.
spk_0
The first picture.
spk_0
I just love looking at everything art deco.
spk_0
It just makes me smile.
spk_0
I can't even describe to you these chandeliers.
spk_0
You have to go look at them online.
spk_0
They're gold and like a frosted glass.
spk_0
You have these ornate wood chairs that have some funtassel things going on on the cushions.
spk_0
There's a lot of candles.
spk_0
There's a nice moody, soft blue wall coloring going on.
spk_0
Some dark moody paintings on the wall.
spk_0
It's a whole mood in this picture.
spk_0
And the light fixtures are just fantastic.
spk_0
You've got to go look at them to see what it is.
spk_0
So key characteristics of this style is a high use of geometric patterns.
spk_0
You got a lot of angular lines.
spk_0
A lot of curves.
spk_0
A lot of sunbursts.
spk_0
There's so much going on.
spk_0
The motifs of sun rays, animals, foliage, feathers and newd females too.
spk_0
You have a lot of opulent materials.
spk_0
Things that are really rich looking.
spk_0
You have jeweled tone colors with heavy use of brass and gold.
spk_0
And the furnishings.
spk_0
They make a bold statement with their upholstery and their size.
spk_0
So the second picture.
spk_0
Very simple pedestal dining table.
spk_0
It's white.
spk_0
There's a lot of white tall linear curved.
spk_0
I don't even know if they're vases.
spk_0
They just look like ceramic sculptures.
spk_0
And the chairs.
spk_0
They're very interesting.
spk_0
They look like they're either a metal or a dark stained wood.
spk_0
They almost look like directors chairs at a movie.
spk_0
When you're watching the whole movie being filmed or the director's sitting in that chair.
spk_0
That's kind of what it looks like.
spk_0
But with an upgraded leather seating.
spk_0
Stvery black and white stripes.
spk_0
Run the floor.
spk_0
And the really big focal.
spk_0
Beyond the gold pendant fixture that you see here.
spk_0
Well, really more of a chandelier.
spk_0
Is this wall with amazing slatted detail to it.
spk_0
Stained in various hues.
spk_0
All in the same color family though.
spk_0
And there's a lot of juxtaposing 45 degree angles going on here.
spk_0
Some big pieces, some skinny pieces, some medium-sized pieces.
spk_0
It's very interesting.
spk_0
Definitely a work of art.
spk_0
Super cool.
spk_0
So another style that is just gorgeous.
spk_0
It's the French country style.
spk_0
It's elegant.
spk_0
It means rustic charm.
spk_0
And it combines natural and cozy features of a country setting with the elegant and
spk_0
teak decor of France.
spk_0
So this first picture is just dreamy.
spk_0
There's some very subtle wallpaper on the walls.
spk_0
There is a giant gold mirror with all this
spk_0
building and decorations at the top.
spk_0
The doors to the outside are wood like a pine.
spk_0
It's a soft creamy white sofa.
spk_0
There's an intake white giant hutch behind the couch.
spk_0
There's a nice soft wood coffee table.
spk_0
A lot of candles.
spk_0
A splash of greenery and a white pot.
spk_0
It just looks so cozy and inviting.
spk_0
Key characteristics of this style are soft and neutral color palettes.
spk_0
Distressed and ornamental furnishings.
spk_0
Feminine and chinsel decor like the mirrors.
spk_0
There's curved lines especially in the cabriol style.
spk_0
Leg and then some use of the raw iron in metal accents which adds texture.
spk_0
The second picture is French country but a definitely different vibe from the first one.
spk_0
So you've got some, the fireplaces, the focal feature on this.
spk_0
And you can't see the whole thing but it's got a subtle curve to the top with a little
spk_0
keystone in the curve.
spk_0
And the wall looks like it's plaster, maybe a couple pieces of brick.
spk_0
Soft creamy beige color.
spk_0
You've got raw wood, mantle, a black round mirror on top.
spk_0
Some very thin dainty like gold candlesticks.
spk_0
Some nice taller white vases that are probably some rameg with some fresh greenery in it.
spk_0
There is a dark wood bookcase.
spk_0
And I can't tell if it's built, it looks like it's built in.
spk_0
It's got to be built in because it's so flat.
spk_0
The top frame is so flat to the wall.
spk_0
So subtly built in wood, dark wood, black painted on the inside.
spk_0
Some old colored looking books and pictures.
spk_0
And it's just so country cottage, French country.
spk_0
Beautiful vibe going on.
spk_0
Very unique fireplaces.
spk_0
Going to a entirely different style, we have the luck style,
spk_0
a glamorous and fabulous interpretation of Hollywood Regency style.
spk_0
It focuses on only the best materials, textures, furnishings, and a core.
spk_0
This first picture is of a dining table.
spk_0
And it has legs.
spk_0
Which I find hard to describe.
spk_0
There's another one of those that you're going to have to go look at this.
spk_0
Just because it's hard to tell from this one picture in this angle.
spk_0
What exactly it looks like?
spk_0
It's not, it's really not a pedestal, but the legs meet in the middle and go outwards.
spk_0
But I can't see where it actually touches the tabletop.
spk_0
So it's very interesting.
spk_0
But anyways, there is a long table with eight seats around it.
spk_0
Very modern style.
spk_0
You got very thin black legs, creamy white chairs, wood or black tabletop.
spk_0
You've got these glass hand-blown globes, a cluster of, there's probably nine to
spk_0
eleven of them hanging from the ceiling over the table.
spk_0
Which I ganted probably 15, 14 foot high windows looking up to trees.
spk_0
And the ceiling has some more modern wood beams to it.
spk_0
And the fireplace at the end of the dining table has a full slab of maybe a marble or a porcelain.
spk_0
Very black with white creamy motion going on in a linear fireplace.
spk_0
Looks like gray slate.
spk_0
High all maybe on the floor.
spk_0
So it just looks glamorous.
spk_0
Key characteristics of this look style are the faux fur velvet and silk materials.
spk_0
You've got gold accents with black, white, gray, and navy or other bold colors.
spk_0
You've got smooth and glossy finishes, extravagant light fixtures and feature walls.
spk_0
And only the finest that money can buy.
spk_0
This next picture, this is such fun lighting.
spk_0
I want you to go see it.
spk_0
It's not going to be able to do justice.
spk_0
It's more hand-blown glass, but it's an amber color.
spk_0
And it's got, they're not quite well.
spk_0
They've got some funky shapes pressed into them.
spk_0
They look so cool.
spk_0
And there's like 11 of these varying sized globes hanging on this kitchen island.
spk_0
And it's so unique.
spk_0
And I can tell you highly expensive.
spk_0
So this countertop, honestly, I don't know what the countertop is because it looks like it has
spk_0
a gold trim around it.
spk_0
On top of whatever the material is, it's very interesting.
spk_0
It might even be like a cabinetry kind of thing going on.
spk_0
In which case, they probably are not doing any actual cooking and prepping on that surface.
spk_0
But you've got three gold-leg, half-curve, like a rainbow shape,
spk_0
stools with low backs that are creamy white.
spk_0
The cooktop is framed in like a fireplace.
spk_0
You got black marble on the back and then your hood essentially has a very traditional curves
spk_0
over it like a traditional fireplace.
spk_0
It's very interesting.
spk_0
And it's got warm wood floors and tall ceilings.
spk_0
And I'm telling you guys, you've just got to go look at this light fixture.
spk_0
It's super fun.
spk_0
And then the last style I have for you guys is maximalism.
spk_0
This is not my personal preference.
spk_0
It is, first of all, I love cozy minimalism.
spk_0
So maximalism being the opposite is not my cup of tea.
spk_0
But I can really appreciate the beauty.
spk_0
I think this first picture is beautiful.
spk_0
But I'll just grab that in just a second.
spk_0
I'm getting ahead of myself.
spk_0
So maximalism is a style that is having to come back after a long trend of minimalism.
spk_0
It's focused on layering patterns, bold colors, and surrounding your software things that you love
spk_0
and believe to be beautiful.
spk_0
Now I can get behind that because so many styles people are like, well,
spk_0
it has to say farmhouse.
spk_0
And it has to say beach on my side.
spk_0
And it has to have an eager.
spk_0
And like you just feel like there are certain things you have to do for the style.
spk_0
If it's industrial, there has to be a gear somewhere in my house.
spk_0
You know, and you can feel limited in that.
spk_0
But I don't think you need to be.
spk_0
I think if you love it, no matter what your style is,
spk_0
you should find a way to make it work in your space.
spk_0
Even if you have to spray painted or tweak it a little bit,
spk_0
change something up, reappulster, switch out the legs,
spk_0
whatever it is.
spk_0
If you love it, put it in your home if it makes you happy and find a way to make it work.
spk_0
So this picture, you have five golden framed things on the wall.
spk_0
Three of them are paintings, two of which are females,
spk_0
and it looks like the third is of them to fruit.
spk_0
And you've got two mirrors.
spk_0
You've got a three-piece pendant hanging in the corner of little
spk_0
blobs, little golden tops and bottoms, finials to that.
spk_0
You've got a bookshelf just filled with stuff.
spk_0
You've got like at least four things I can see on top of that little
spk_0
hatch.
spk_0
There's a monsterer plant in the corner here.
spk_0
The couch, guys, is this velvet bright blue, like a sapphire,
spk_0
which is gorgeous.
spk_0
Near is a like a faux fur throw blanket with a golden velvet pillow on top of it,
spk_0
and next to a golden white pattern pillow, the tabletop is glass.
spk_0
I think that's a Buddha sitting on top.
spk_0
There's a pedestal underneath.
spk_0
I can't tell if it's like white wood or ceramic base.
spk_0
The rug is red and bolded and patterned.
spk_0
And guys, there is so much happening in this,
spk_0
and it's just a whole style unto itself.
spk_0
The key characteristics is the highly saturated colors,
spk_0
layers of patterning, ornate-coring furnishings.
spk_0
There's a use of every space available with beautiful things that you love.
spk_0
And there are statement ceilings and wallpapers.
spk_0
This next picture that I have for you, this last one, is a bit of a
spk_0
turn from the first picture where it's a monochromatic theme going on.
spk_0
It's somebody's office space.
spk_0
They've got a wooden desk.
spk_0
They've got a wooden, another desk, secretary kind of table off in the corner.
spk_0
And then they've got like seven wall shelves filled with stuff,
spk_0
including like a little miniature boat from like when the British
spk_0
sailed to America style kind of boat.
spk_0
I'm sorry, like a clipper boat.
spk_0
Do you think this is what those are called?
spk_0
All of the walls are deep and well-grain.
spk_0
And there's more green plants.
spk_0
All the woods are the same.
spk_0
There is white in here to help brighten it up on the ceilings
spk_0
and the books on the walls and some of the accent.
spk_0
But there's just every single available space
spk_0
is being used in this room, which is what makes it maximalist.
spk_0
So guys, there are many more styles left to explore.
spk_0
But these are the most common that can get you started on figuring out your true home design.
spk_0
If you're still having trouble, then I recommend taking this quick quiz from Quillvin.
spk_0
Go check it out, Quillvin Design Style Quiz.
spk_0
Or if you're on my show notes, you can click the link.
spk_0
I found it quite helpful when I got stuck in my own home.
spk_0
I was trying to do a good modern bowhoaf thing,
spk_0
but then on my furniture really quite matched.
spk_0
And I had two different kind of rocks and I had random curtains.
spk_0
And it was just like stuff I had collected over the years from when everything was like,
spk_0
I'll take whatever's free, you know, kind of a thing.
spk_0
And now that I'm being more intentional in my space,
spk_0
I'm like, what is happening?
spk_0
And so I've been really trying to narrow it down.
spk_0
And I can't go buy a whole new household of furniture right now.
spk_0
I'm not at that place in my life.
spk_0
And I hope to never be at the place in my life where I just go buy a whole household
spk_0
full of furniture.
spk_0
I don't ever want to do that.
spk_0
I want to have secondhand items that I bring with me that I keep.
spk_0
My kitchen table is an heirloom piece like
spk_0
you got to work with what you have here sometimes people.
spk_0
So I had to take this quiz and help, you know,
spk_0
be intentional about what I selected and it really helped me narrow in.
spk_0
And I really have like a mid-century modern vibe going on here,
spk_0
but I do have subtle influences of like the Japan-D style
spk_0
or very organic styles going on.
spk_0
So I've got little influences coming in.
spk_0
So it's not being a little bit eclectic.
spk_0
But it's very interesting to see because I was not pegging mid-century modern
spk_0
as my big main style.
spk_0
But anyways, if you're looking for someone to help you through the process of finding your style,
