Now let's listen to another woman's story and how they paved the way.
spk_0
Now today we will be talking about Kamala Harris.
spk_0
She will be remembered forever as she strives to model an inspiring example for future women
spk_0
leaders.
spk_0
Nowadays you probably know Kamala from running alongside President Joe Biden.
spk_0
Her past revealed much more than that.
spk_0
From her early protests as a child to becoming Attorney General for California, Kamala will
spk_0
go down in history as a role model for generations to come.
spk_0
From the very beginning of Kamala's life, she was inspired by others to speak up for arguments
spk_0
and topics they believe in.
spk_0
One of the many things that helped Kamala be set up for success was her parents involvement
spk_0
in black rights movements.
spk_0
From a few years old, she would be carried around by her parents at various rallies and
spk_0
protests to support black rights.
spk_0
Another example of her early activist moments was during her teenage years.
spk_0
She moved from California to Canada and the facility that she lived in for big children
spk_0
in their park.
spk_0
She, as a 12 year old girl, took the initiative to organize a protest against it.
spk_0
As it states in the article Kamala Harris, Harris won her first fight against discrimination
spk_0
when she was 12 years old.
spk_0
Though the courtyard was an inviting place to play, children were forbidden there.
spk_0
Undaunted, Harris organized a protest and convinced the building management to change their
spk_0
policy.
spk_0
Later in her life, she continued her legacy.
spk_0
As a young adult, she graduated from Howard University with a bachelor's degree.
spk_0
Soon after, she moved back to San Francisco and continued her education at the University
spk_0
of California, where she then got her Juris Doctor degree, a degree that allowed for a career
spk_0
as a lawyer.
spk_0
Later, going on to become a Attorney General of California and a member of the US Senate
spk_0
soon after.
spk_0
As stated again in the article Kamala Harris, before the November 2003 election, polls
spk_0
showed that the little-known challenger Kamala Harris had the support of only 19% of voters.
spk_0
However, she won 33.65% on election day, eliminating the other challenger, Bill Fasio, who only
spk_0
got 30.3%.
spk_0
And qualifying for a runoff election against the current DA, Terence Hallian.
spk_0
Harris won the runoff with more than 56% of the vote, becoming the first woman district
spk_0
attorney in San Francisco, the first African American DA in California, and the first Indian
spk_0
American DA in the United States.
spk_0
So sorry to interrupt, but I would like to talk a little bit more about Squarespace.

spk_0
As I said before, Kamala Harris will always be remembered for the legacy that she is creating.
spk_0
She's conquered so many barriers in her life that nobody else could.
spk_0
Now she's conquering yet another thing by becoming the first woman,
spk_0
black American, and South Asian vice president ever.
spk_0
She will continue to support President Joe Biden in his plan to unite the country
spk_0
and recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.
spk_0
After being declared vice president, she made a wonderful speech,
spk_0
signifying just how far she has come.
spk_0
Here it is.
spk_0
You choose hope and unity, decency, science, and yes, truth.
spk_0
But will I be the first woman in this office I will not be the last?
spk_0
Because every little girl watching tonight sees that this country is a country of possibilities,
spk_0
and to the children of our country, regardless of your gender, our country has sent you a clear message.
spk_0
Dream with ambition, lead with conviction, and see yourselves in a way that others may simply
spk_0
not because they've never seen it before.
spk_0
