Hey everybody, this is Brennan Gearing. Currently I'm a fifth grade teacher at Simmons Elementary
spk_0
and I'm also going to Northern State University for a Master's degree. On today's podcast
spk_0
I'm going to be talking about technology tool called TISMOs. That can not only be beneficial
spk_0
to educators at the elementary level but professionals in a variety of fields. I will also introduce
spk_0
the SAMR model and explain its importance to this discussion when using TISMOs in an educational
spk_0
setting or in the other settings that I kind of mentioned. Let's jump right in. TISMOs
spk_0
is a social bookmarking tool that is useful in several ways. In our class I'm currently
spk_0
right now for technology we've discussed this in past discussions about social bookmarking
spk_0
as a whole and kind of how it's becoming more and more popular. Also there's a lot of benefits
spk_0
to social bookmarking but for today's purposes I'm only going to focus on TISMOs. For starters
spk_0
TISMOs is very user friendly. The website has a clean appearance and requires a small amount
spk_0
of time to become comfortable using it. I know I was able to jump right in which is always
spk_0
nice too especially as a teacher you're on a limited amount of time as it is so when you
spk_0
can use tools that kind of speed up processes that normally take you a little bit longer
spk_0
that's always a benefit. It can also be used on a lot of different devices. TISMOs has a
spk_0
free app available in all the popular app stores. This provides an easy way to double check
spk_0
your TISMOs page is accurate and running properly especially you know with teaching and
spk_0
technology you want to double check before you actually give a lesson that everything is
spk_0
running smoothly. This allows for you to check on your phone or tablets or you know whatever
spk_0
right before the day begins even so kind of give you a little peace of mind. TISMOs provides
spk_0
a way for someone to post and save links from different resources in one place. Now
spk_0
while that's possible for other apps TISMOs makes it easier and safer when it comes to
spk_0
using a technology tool on a classroom setting. Depending on how you want to use the tool
spk_0
you can control its content and what content is accessible to students. Also like what links
spk_0
are available on your main tool pages completely up to you. You're the one that posts them.
spk_0
You're the one that picks kind of what topics you want to focus on. Like I mentioned earlier
spk_0
TISMOs is easy to learn and it is quick and simple to set up your first page. Now the
spk_0
you want to expand your abilities on TISMOs. It starts to cost a little bit of money.
spk_0
However compared to other tools TISMOs is actually fairly affordable considering what
spk_0
you can use it for. I know myself and a couple other students actually looked into it
spk_0
and one student even posted it on their discussion board. It seems pretty affordable when you
spk_0
consider the different pros and cons especially when you again compare it to other applications
spk_0
or their tools that I currently use or other teachers currently use that I know. And so
spk_0
like I said I would recommend TISMOs. Now there are even more benefits that I haven't
spk_0
mentioned but I will mention here shortly. What using TISMOs for educational purposes,
spk_0
once you've created a designer page you can easily copy and paste the link in other
spk_0
web pages or tools that you use for your classroom. For example my class uses different web
spk_0
pages to communicate with parents and family members. It's very easy for me to simply
spk_0
create a new TISMOs page and copy the links for parents and students to access at home
spk_0
on their own time. Now that I've kind of laid out what TISMO says and how it works, let
spk_0
me tell you what the Santa model is. The Santa model is a way for teachers to see if they
spk_0
are using technology effectively in their own classrooms. Everyone agrees that our
spk_0
technology needs to be prevalent in our classrooms because our students are learning differently
spk_0
from how we learned. Technology is found in all aspects of a student's
spk_0
life and it's becoming more and more prevalent for even our lives. So that means technology
spk_0
needs to be worked into our lesson plans but we can easily put technology into a lesson
spk_0
but the question is how effective is it actually for our students? Is it enhancing their
spk_0
learning? So we need to make sure that when we adapt our instruction in our styles that
spk_0
we are actually matching their needs but also helping them learn at a more meaningful
spk_0
and deeper level. Well the Santa model helps to evaluate the use of technology on four
spk_0
different levels. The levels are substitution, augmentation, modification and finally
spk_0
redefinition. And thus the Santa model was named and created. The higher level of the
spk_0
Santa model the more effective that that technology is being used. So obviously you want to be
spk_0
up on those two top levels modification redefinition. But let's kind of look through each level
spk_0
here before we get into too many details. First the substitution level is what it sounds
spk_0
like you're simply substituting a task that you didn't use technology for and are now
spk_0
doing the exact same task but just using technology. There really isn't a benefit for using
spk_0
the technology on this level because the technology doesn't enhance learning experience
spk_0
the students. The second level would be the augmentation level. This level is obviously
spk_0
a step up. It starts the process of creating an environment where technology is used in a
spk_0
way that changes the foundation of how a teacher instructs the students. However it's not
spk_0
a large change. It's actually kind of a small basic change but it is a good starting point.
spk_0
Beyond, you're starting to get beyond what you normally do and students are becoming
spk_0
more engaged and excited that you are using technology but it doesn't really enhance learning
spk_0
experience in ways that could be more beneficial for students at the higher levels. So the third
spk_0
level would be the modification level. This is where you start to really see technology become
spk_0
more of a focal point in a way that allows students to dictate how their learning is happening
spk_0
exactly. Technology becomes a need for the instruction and can't simply be replaced by another task
spk_0
such as in the substitution level. The classroom becomes more student centered and lots of teacher driven.
spk_0
The learning experience as a whole becomes a lot richer and provides students with a deeper
spk_0
understanding of the content which is obvious to the goal as I mentioned before and now technology
spk_0
at this level is starting to really enhance that and really help that through. Now the highest
spk_0
level of the San Ramada will be the redefinition level and that means you're literally redefining
spk_0
how the students in your classroom are learning. Technology is critical to learning and require students
spk_0
to create a challenge that they wouldn't have had before. They're creating something meaningful
spk_0
using technology. They're thinking at deeper levels. They're working with peers. They're fully
spk_0
engaged in the process and they can take ownership of their actual learning. Now the San Ramada
spk_0
as a whole is a great way to evaluate how useful your technology uses in your classroom. It gives
spk_0
the teacher the ability to start the process of taking the technology and how they use it to
spk_0
higher levels of effectiveness. The question for our podcast SIG who comes now how can we apply
spk_0
the San Ramada to TISMOs like I mentioned earlier? Well TISMOs like I said is a great tool for a
spk_0
variety of purposes. However when using it especially as educators we need to consider the San Ramada.
spk_0
We want to make sure that we are reaching those higher levels of use and if we aren't we need to
spk_0
assess how we can get there. I'm going to lay out some ideas of how to use TISMOs on each level
spk_0
of the San Ramada quickly. To start with let's consider a substitute substitution activity
spk_0
and what that would look like for TISMOs. The first thing that came to my mind would be using TISMOs
spk_0
as a template for content for a lesson. Instead of writing the content on the board I would simply
spk_0
post relevant links to my TISMOs page and show the students the content through my smart board.
spk_0
This would in fact substitute one task for another. However like the model explains there's
spk_0
really no enhancement to learn the experience. It's not really benefiting my students at a deeper level.
spk_0
An example for the second level the augmentation level would be to post links or quizzes
spk_0
onto my TISMOs page. So students would actually log in to our classes TISMOs page and assess
spk_0
excuse me access different anonymous quizzes or different applications that you can attach to your
spk_0
page. While these are beneficial they definitely help teachers assess students. It doesn't really
spk_0
take into account how to properly use technology in a way that is modifying or redefining. So again
spk_0
it's getting the ball rolling but we're really not getting to those higher levels yet.
spk_0
Again the third steps where you start to see that it's significant change. So for the modification
spk_0
level an example could be posting three different relevant links to your TISMOs page that students
spk_0
would need to access and read. You would also need to attach a link for a class discussion. So
spk_0
this is where you're starting to step up. All students would have to read the articles but the
spk_0
key here is that students would participate in a student led discussion. It would require peer-to-peer
spk_0
interaction and now we're starting to have a discussion in a more meaningful way. Now the final
spk_0
step the highest step would be the redefinition level. Now this is the toughest to achieve when
spk_0
using technology. However once you start working up to it it can be achieved in no time. My
spk_0
example for this would be have students create their own TISMOs page and this could even be with
spk_0
a group of their peers. They would choose a topic to research and explain. They would demonstrate
spk_0
their learning by creating the TISMOs page and you would need them to include about five different
spk_0
artifacts that could prove they thoroughly researched the topic. Students would provide their TISMOs
spk_0
link like I said which is easy to do for their peers to access. Students would provide comments or
spk_0
critiques that could comment on each other's work and this would be before they actually do their
spk_0
final presentations. That way students could go through the editing and refining process to be able
spk_0
to work with their groups to update their TISMOs page to their best so that way when they give
spk_0
their presentations they have thoroughly thought it through and are best prepared for it.
spk_0
Now they would just give the presentation through my smart board but another idea I came up with
spk_0
was that all students if possible could either be on a laptop or a tablet. Now all the students
spk_0
are presenting the other their peers will be logged into a class discussion where they can
spk_0
respond to the presentation live or post with their learning or even what questions they have.
spk_0
Now as the teacher I'll be able to monitor this for my end as well which will help me assess
spk_0
involvement and participation. All right overall to get to the redefinition level it takes time and
spk_0
effort from all parties. However our goal as teachers is to prepare our students for the ever
spk_0
changing world and provide them with the best possible learning experience. So the Sam
spk_0
or model and great tools such as TISMOs help kind of keep us accountable and effective as teachers.
spk_0
All right well thank you everybody for listening to my podcast today and hopefully you're
spk_0
able to take away some new concepts or helpful ideas. While we might as well finish with a
spk_0
little joke here before I let you go. A boy walks by a girl in the hallway of a school and
spk_0
mutters the principal is so dumb. The girl asks the boy if he knows who she is. He replies
spk_0
no with a confused look. She says I'm the principal's daughter. The boy quickly asks the girl the
spk_0
same question. Well do you know who I am? The girl pauses and says no. The boy says good smiles
spk_0
and walks away. Until next time have a great week everybody.
