spk_0 Hey there, it's us again.
spk_0 This is my brother Peter, Mom and Dad, and I'm Dasha.
spk_0 Today we're going to be showing our friends the basics of the internet, and we thought
spk_0 you might want to come along.
spk_0 It'll be cool.
spk_0 The internet gave us a whole world of exciting new possibilities.
spk_0 So I guess this is a story of how it changed our lives.
spk_0 Maybe it will yours too.
spk_0 So why don't we try to see how far we can go back in the search history?
spk_0 Like down there?
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 How does it feel to hold back the curtain and show strangers this history?
spk_0 It's fucking embarrassing.
spk_0 It's really fucking embarrassing, especially sitting next to you guys.
spk_0 You guys from the New York Times, you're like, what the fuck were you watching this
spk_0 shit for, dog?
spk_0 I'll just be honest, I would not show you my YouTube history.
spk_0 So I asked Caleb to download his entire YouTube viewing history, like 12,000 videos spanning
spk_0 four years of his life, and like, you were excited.
spk_0 I was losing my mind.
spk_0 Glad we're doing this today.
spk_0 Did you see anything that's just like strange?
spk_0 Like I do just, I'm an internet person, right?
spk_0 You understand?
spk_0 So like, I've heard so many stories about people falling down internet rabbit holes.
spk_0 Is that, uh-huh?
spk_0 Take on me?
spk_0 Fucking love that song.
spk_0 But I never actually was able to sort of forensically reconstruct someone's actual journey
spk_0 down internet rabbit hole.
spk_0 Inch by inch.
spk_0 And then I'll listen like a lot of like, the fires, the earthquake, the death.
spk_0 Alex Jones black metal.
spk_0 That shit's actually pretty awesome.
spk_0 Elsa?
spk_0 Do you want to build a scene?
spk_0 Kevin looking at this, I can't help but feel like it's a little intrusive.
spk_0 Like we're right going through someone's diary or something?
spk_0 Yeah, totally.
spk_0 Like, he went through a period where he was, he was listening to a lot of frozen songs,
spk_0 but also.
spk_0 Jesse.
spk_0 Do you want to build a meth lab?
spk_0 Um, parodies?
spk_0 Like, there's a frozen and breaking bad parody mashup called, do you want to build a meth lab?
spk_0 We'll make lots of money.
spk_0 Just you and me will stack the power up high.
spk_0 But it's exactly because it's so private and unguarded and unfiltered that it's so valuable
spk_0 as a reporting tool.
spk_0 Yeah, let's go all the scrolls as far as you can and we'll start from the beginning.
spk_0 So what you're looking for in Kale's watch history are the clues for how he over time
spk_0 takes on more and more radical beliefs, right?
spk_0 Okay, so we'll slow down.
spk_0 We'll go back to how it started and to do that, we have to really put his watch history
spk_0 in time.
spk_0 The college students are, I've done right to be depressed.
spk_0 Their society is unsustainable because nobody's asking the fundamental questions about why
spk_0 the society is the way it is, why things are so bad.
spk_0 Because the YouTube history that Caleb was able to download and share with us, it starts
spk_0 in 2015, which is about a year after he got that job at Derrick Queen.
spk_0 And right away, one of the first things you notice is the Stefan Mollonoo.
spk_0 Why is it that men are the ones who have to be banished from social discourse?
spk_0 Why is it men who have to be driven into the basement?
spk_0 Caleb's all time favorite YouTuber.
spk_0 If you can only have a voice by making other people shut up, you're not a feminist.
spk_0 You're a tyrant.
spk_0 The tone and focus of his videos.
spk_0 And apparently the only way that feminists can give women a voice is saying,
spk_0 shut up to every man on the planet.
spk_0 Has really sharpened in the wake of this weird and important internet event.
spk_0 Did you have feelings about Game of the Gate while it was happening?
spk_0 I didn't get too much into that, but I saw it as like, see they're trying to take everything over.
spk_0 They just want to make everything politically correct.
spk_0 You know, all these SJWs, they're even trying to take our video games.
spk_0 An event called Game of the Gate.
spk_0 What is Game of the Gate?
spk_0 Pay attention to Game of the Gate.
spk_0 That is Game of the Gate.
spk_0 Game of the Gate.
spk_0 I don't even know what that is.
spk_0 So a few months before this watch history starts back in 2014,
spk_0 there was a breakup between this gamer and his girlfriend,
spk_0 who was a video game developer.
spk_0 And she was sort of part of this movement of progressive game developers
spk_0 who really wanted to take the world of video games,
spk_0 grab a whore and have a good time.
spk_0 Please don't.
spk_0 I want to give him a stud like you, a free sample.
spk_0 Like how it depicted women and violence and bring it into the modern age.
spk_0 And she made these very non-traditional games.
spk_0 Like in one of them, the enemy that your character is fighting is depression.
spk_0 And this game, it got a lot of positive press.
spk_0 Like gaming journalists really liked it,
spk_0 called it compelling and educational.
spk_0 Depression quest hands down one of the worst games I've ever played.
spk_0 But some gamers...
spk_0 It sucks.
spk_0 Really hated it.
spk_0 It really, really, really sucks.
spk_0 So the ex-boyfriend of this developer...
spk_0 wrote this really long blog post,
spk_0 in which he basically accused her of sleeping with a video game journalist
spk_0 in exchange for positive coverage.
spk_0 And despite the fact that this gaming journalist had never actually reviewed this game,
spk_0 this blog post went viral.
spk_0 And voila, drama is made.
spk_0 It appears that she was involved in sexual activity,
spk_0 in return for favorable review school.
spk_0 And starts this huge controversy.
spk_0 The core issue is really, it's nepotism.
spk_0 Over whether the video game industry,
spk_0 which makes billions of dollars a year,
spk_0 has a huge impact on people's lives,
spk_0 whether it's all plagued by corruption and nepotism and foul play.
spk_0 We have a right to question the integrity of the sites that we're reading.
spk_0 And then a bunch of angry gamers started this very intense campaign of harassment.
spk_0 What started as an online spat about the ethics of gaming journalism,
spk_0 quickly escalated into a full-blown culture war.
spk_0 They use all these tactics that would only work on the internet.
spk_0 And now the women calling for change in this multi-billion dollar virtual industry
spk_0 are facing a very real backlash, including death threats.
spk_0 Baming memes and trying to get hashtags trending.
spk_0 These bomb, rape, and death threats from online harassers.
spk_0 Lots of fake accounts.
spk_0 Dress on Twitter even forced another game developer to leave her Boston area home
spk_0 after her address was made public.
spk_0 It was really the first culture war
spk_0 where the internet itself became the primary weapon.
spk_0 Who controls a feminist?
spk_0 Who calls gay and militarerists?
spk_0 We do.
spk_0 And it became clear that the real thing that people were angry about
spk_0 wasn't ethics in gaming journalism or whatever.
spk_0 It was the fact that they thought this culture of video games,
spk_0 this culture that for decades have been dominated by young men.
spk_0 We have characters in video games that are being attacked day in and day out
spk_0 just because of how their dress was now under attack.
spk_0 If you can't set your politics in your bullshit down before you come into our gaming shop,
spk_0 you ain't welcome there.
spk_0 And the threat was coming from the media.
spk_0 Now the media is trying to reapply these negative stereotypes to us
spk_0 along as a mediocre game contains the correct progressive political positions.
spk_0 It's considered groundbreaking innovative.
spk_0 And progressive, these people that they call social justice warriors.
spk_0 The term social justice warrior does not actually mean someone who's out for social justice.
spk_0 The SW is they want equality, but I don't think that they understand what true equality is.
spk_0 And it wasn't just video games.
spk_0 Activists and feminazies are fucking ruining comic books.
spk_0 Feminism, ruined Star Wars.
spk_0 Pretty soon it's spread to...
spk_0 Boyle Boy is PC culture really just...
spk_0 Everything.
spk_0 Ruining our whole world.
spk_0 That's what gamer gate is about.
spk_0 We're tired of this.
spk_0 Saying that we're all white, we're all male, we're all straight and so on so forth.
spk_0 I saw it as like, see they're trying to take everything over.
spk_0 They just want to make everything politically correct.
spk_0 You know, all these SJWs, they're even trying to take our video games.
spk_0 And it was on the other side of gamer gate that this new kind of political identity emerged.
spk_0 And this identity like, it didn't really fit into a traditional left-right
spk_0 Democrat Republican spectrum.
spk_0 In this identity, you could be pro-game marriage and pro marijuana legalization.
spk_0 You can even support Medicare for all.
spk_0 But the core belief, like the central thing that animates you,
spk_0 is this power struggle against these dying old media gatekeepers who just want to like
spk_0 tell people what to think and enforce this restrictive PC culture.
spk_0 You cannot make anyone else feel bad in the way we're going to get you to never make anyone
spk_0 else feel bad is to put the SJW thumb screws right up your refra.
spk_0 Right into your balls.
spk_0 And so the Stefan Malini that we see in Caleb's watch history, post-gamer gate,
spk_0 he's really come to embody this new political identity.
spk_0 The media will praise people who are leftist and multiculturalists and blah, blah, blah, blah,
spk_0 and they will attack other people who aren't that way.
spk_0 Especially with a series of videos.
spk_0 This is the truth about Karl Marx.
spk_0 There are sort of variations on the truth about.
spk_0 Martin Luther King plagiarist about historical figures, political leaders, but more often about
spk_0 this is the truth about Israel and Palestine.
spk_0 This is the truth about slavery.
spk_0 Controversial topics in the news.
spk_0 The truth about Michael Brown and the Ferguson right.
spk_0 The truth about immigration.
spk_0 This is the truth.
spk_0 This is the truth.
spk_0 The truth about the movie frozen.
spk_0 The format of these videos is pretty much the same every time.
spk_0 He lays out first the kind of official explanation for something that happened in the news.
spk_0 CNN went with the headline,
spk_0 Michael Brown teased shot by police days before college,
spk_0 continuing the gentle giant narrative.
spk_0 Then he sort of breaks it down and tells you,
spk_0 here's what really happened.
spk_0 So the video that we saw, and according to a police report,
spk_0 a brown and his friend, Dorian Johnson,
spk_0 were performing a strong armed robbery with store staff and stealing a box of cigars on set.
spk_0 He's saying basically, look, like,
spk_0 I'm no expert, but I can see that this official explanation is not right.
spk_0 Now this gentle giant, Michael Brown, recorded a collection of rap
spk_0 tracks with friends and posted them.
spk_0 But I am going to give you the truth.
spk_0 Lyrix, I guess you could call them,
spk_0 go something like this.
spk_0 I just want a real bitch,
spk_0 smoked dope, and kill shit.
spk_0 If we can, challenge the narrative and begin to think of fresh.
spk_0 No bias, no spin, no fancy cameras, no makeup.
spk_0 In fact, I read a no makeup.
spk_0 Why?
spk_0 Because I actually do some research, right?
spk_0 Before I create a video, you know, it may not be the end of the world to do a little less foundation
spk_0 on the skin and a little bit more foundation in critical thinking.
spk_0 I was chasing truth.
spk_0 You know, I had this analogy in my head that I thought of.
spk_0 I was like Indiana Jones with my, you know, explorers hat on.
spk_0 And stuff like said, hey, look at this cave.
spk_0 Look, there's knowledge down there, right?
spk_0 The truth is down there.
spk_0 You've got to go down and dig for it.
spk_0 So looking through the early months of Caleb's watch history,
spk_0 and it was an uncomfortable truth, and I'd accepted that.
spk_0 And that's what made it even more compelling.
spk_0 You really see that Stefan Malinu was the first step into the rabbit hole for him.
spk_0 And because Caleb would watch Stefan Malinu and then go on these long binges,
spk_0 where he would just watch recommended video after recommended video,
spk_0 you can really see, like, in detail where the algorithm is taking him next.
spk_0 Yeah, so that's what you do.
spk_0 Like, you'll watch a video and then the little sidebar comes out and you're like,
spk_0 oh, let's go on a little bench here.
spk_0 So, for example, on Thursday, July 17th, at exactly 11.27 am.
spk_0 I'm going out of West, where I belong.
spk_0 Caleb clicks on a music video for a song called California Sun by the Riviera's.
spk_0 Ladies and gentlemen, from the dark north of Canada, the white north.
spk_0 And then he clicks over to Joe Rogan.
spk_0 There's a lot of these ideas that you have said that are very controversial, that we're going to
spk_0 give you an opportunity.
spk_0 Who is interviewing who else?
spk_0 Stefan Malinu.
spk_0 One of your positions that you criticize or one of the other things that gets tossed out,
spk_0 you is the term misogynist.
spk_0 And for like three hours, if it means general hatred of all women,
spk_0 then I made a really bad choice of who to get married.
spk_0 Caleb's watching his favorite YouTubers talk about his favorite YouTube videos.
spk_0 You do a lot of these, the truth about people.
spk_0 They debate a little bit.
spk_0 A lot of these ideas, they're not, these aren't essentially black and white issues.
spk_0 And when you state that people who have issues with me or disagree with things that I say,
spk_0 you'll have better reason and evidence.
spk_0 Fantastic. I mean, I've done it.
spk_0 And then I can see that the very next video that he gets recommended.
spk_0 I've been looking forward to doing this podcast with you again for a while.
spk_0 Is another Joe Rogan interview with Stefan Malinu?
spk_0 I feel quite a strong urgency that it's a race of us.
spk_0 The birth of the internet will be by far.
spk_0 And then again, like, he watches them talk for another three hours.
spk_0 So I think we're out of time.
spk_0 I think we, we, we, we, we didn't know three hours.
spk_0 Yeah, we just, we just rushed really.
spk_0 Yeah, we didn't talk about a lot of things that I wanted to talk about.
spk_0 Quick.
spk_0 And then you can see Caleb goes on this long music binge.
spk_0 He logs off for a few hours.
spk_0 And when he comes back at 340 in the morning,
spk_0 he plays hours of classical music.
spk_0 The next day,
spk_0 Hi, everybody.
spk_0 I even have to tell you Caleb wakes up.
spk_0 Hi, everybody.
spk_0 Stefan Malinu.
spk_0 Hi, everybody.
spk_0 Stefan Malinu.
spk_0 And he goes on a big Stefan Malinu binge.
spk_0 Most times you get picked on because you're...
spk_0 And skipping ahead in his viewing history
spk_0 past some more Stefan Malinu and some musical interludes.
spk_0 I'm sorry to say that the most brazen untruths always come from the left.
spk_0 You can see that Caleb gets a recommendation
spk_0 for someone totally new.
spk_0 What the Gamergate movement did was prove that it is possible to beat the left.
spk_0 Malinopolis, provocateur.
spk_0 It was the first time that ordinary people
spk_0 proved that you could beat the feminist wackos if you tried.
spk_0 Malinopolis, he's this flampoint British guy who is fully embraced.
spk_0 My safe word is women can be funny.
spk_0 The role of Internet troll.
spk_0 No, they can.
spk_0 I mean, I can't think of any examples, but
spk_0 he was a major figure in Gamergate and then he got hired by Steve Bannon at Brightbar.
spk_0 Everywhere in the world there is Islam.
spk_0 You will find women oppressed, homosexuals murdered, gang rape.
spk_0 Now, there's a unique...
spk_0 He's younger than Stefan Malinu and he's not just talking into his webcam.
spk_0 He's actually going out to college campuses and on talk shows and podcasts.
spk_0 We're in a situation now where students can go to university.
spk_0 They come out dumber than when they went in.
spk_0 They are infantilized by safe space and trigger warning culture.
spk_0 And he sort of became Brightbar's first breakout star.
spk_0 It is a wonderfully involved name moment in Internet culture.
spk_0 And then after that Caleb gets recommended.
spk_0 This other new guy.
spk_0 These feminists are the absolute weakest among women.
spk_0 Name Stephen Crowder.
spk_0 They can't handle content that might be upsetting.
spk_0 They need to be warned.
spk_0 They need to make up terms like micro aggression.
spk_0 They need to...
spk_0 He's this comedian.
spk_0 He did a short stint at Fox News.
spk_0 And then he became huge on YouTube.
spk_0 Black Lives Matter listed their demands.
spk_0 Black only cultural spaces.
spk_0 In the name of equality they're demanding segregation.
spk_0 Just for scale, he's got like 4.4 million subscribers.
spk_0 Which is about twice as many as The New York Times.
spk_0 These women demand that you don't say anything that they don't like.
spk_0 And then demand that you put the bill for their health care for their college.
spk_0 He's got a lot in common with staff and myelons.
spk_0 You are demanded to not only approve, tolerate, but praise them.
spk_0 But what makes him different is that he's the first straight-up conservative
spk_0 that has entered Caleb's YouTube diet.
spk_0 We've been told how great Barack Obama's been for national security because
spk_0 what some have been lawden was killed.
spk_0 Stephen Crowder is a constitutionalist conservative.
spk_0 We now have Syrian refugees wanting to come in.
spk_0 Several have been caught with fake passports trying to get it.
spk_0 I was listening to a lot of him.
spk_0 And what's particularly interesting about this piece of Caleb's YouTube history
spk_0 is that we don't just have his viewing history.
spk_0 We also have his search history.
spk_0 And we can see right here that after he gets recommended Stephen Crowder videos.
spk_0 The dean of Yale or president of Yale,
spk_0 they told him his job was to create a safe space for people.
spk_0 His job wasn't to educate.
spk_0 He then goes looking for more of them.
spk_0 And he goes on all of these other side benches
spk_0 that start with Stephen Crowder.
spk_0 Which is how he meets another new character.
spk_0 Senior Gavin McGinnis, thank you for being on the show, sir.
spk_0 Gavin McGinnis.
spk_0 Hello!
spk_0 Good morning.
spk_0 I am here to make the case for Western shovonism.
spk_0 Yes, I'll Gavin on Stephen Crowder's podcast.
spk_0 And so I'd type in Gavin's name and I'd start watching his content.
spk_0 I started this gang called the Proud Boys.
spk_0 We have chapters all over the world.
spk_0 Gavin is really a singular character in all this.
spk_0 He was one of the co-founders of Vice Magazine back in the day
spk_0 and helped pioneer this hipster aesthetic.
spk_0 He has a big beard and wears skinny jeans.
spk_0 He looks like someone you would run into at the food co-op.
spk_0 You go to these pro-black cop rallies
spk_0 and they're screaming with Soviet signs.
spk_0 And like Steph and Milo and Stephen Crowder,
spk_0 he considers himself edgy.
spk_0 But he takes things a lot further than other people
spk_0 that Caleb has been watching, especially when it comes to race.
spk_0 In 2005, 10 white men raped black women.
spk_0 37,000 black men raped white women.
spk_0 Now, I don't want to make it about race,
spk_0 but if you want to go there, we can go there.
spk_0 And the numbers ain't pretty, lady.
spk_0 Then, throughout the next part of his watch history,
spk_0 you can see that one name really starts
spk_0 dominating basically everything else.
spk_0 Lauren Southern.
spk_0 Reporters like Rachel Maddo and publications
spk_0 like The Huffington Post and Heat Street
spk_0 have become a lapping stock among the right
spk_0 and left for their ignorance on how the internet
spk_0 and its culture works.
spk_0 So Lauren Southern, she's this 25-year-old Canadian
spk_0 libertarian who in 2015 ran for parliament
spk_0 and she lost, but in the process,
spk_0 she built a pretty big YouTube channel,
spk_0 which in some ways like made her more powerful
spk_0 than if she had gotten elected to parliament.
spk_0 Hello, it's Lauren Southern, here with Rebel.
spk_0 And I just got in a huge confrontation with the Slut Walk
spk_0 which we are following right now.
spk_0 When I first saw Lauren, she was at the Slut Walks.
spk_0 All right, let's go follow the walk.
spk_0 No, Lisa.
spk_0 She was beautiful, she was a brown my age.
spk_0 You are attacking our cameraman.
spk_0 Her big break-at-moment was when she interrupted
spk_0 these Slut Walks, these sexual assault protests
spk_0 that were happening all over North America.
spk_0 It's a hell to sign that said,
spk_0 we are not living in a rape culture in the West.
spk_0 She would go up to feminists and try to debate them.
spk_0 Rapists don't get high fives, we don't have the government funding rapists.
spk_0 She's basically doing the same sort of
spk_0 gunzo activism that Michael Moore was doing 10 years earlier,
spk_0 but she's doing it on the other side of the culture war.
spk_0 There's a group of women that were here
spk_0 and they're wishing to draw consent to use a footage
spk_0 that you had, I guess, gotten.
spk_0 So you can't just withdraw consent the next,
spk_0 like, what is interesting?
spk_0 Why is that interesting?
spk_0 It's just, you know, tell me, tell me, like, a rally
spk_0 for consent and they're saying no
spk_0 and you're saying that.
spk_0 Okay, so if someone gives consent the night before
spk_0 and then they have, no, no, listen, if they have sex with a man
spk_0 and they give consent to him, then the next day decide,
spk_0 oh, I regret it.
spk_0 I'm going to report him for being a rapist,
spk_0 even though I gave him consent.
spk_0 You're saying that's okay?
spk_0 So you're out of all the YouTubers that Caleb has watched.
spk_0 Lauren Southern, she's really the most like him.
spk_0 She's young, she dropped out of college,
spk_0 she is a fan of the same YouTubers that he is,
spk_0 and she really kind of brings all these ideas together
spk_0 in these dramatic real world confrontations.
spk_0 I was like, who's this?
spk_0 And I was like, wow, she's out there owning the lives
spk_0 and giving them facts and logic, okay?
spk_0 If you want to know what my sign means,
spk_0 my sign means that this is not a rape culture
spk_0 because rapists go to prison here,
spk_0 go to Afrika and you will see a real rape culture.
spk_0 And at this point, like, Caleb says that this all feels
spk_0 like the same edgy punk rock stuff he was into in high school.
spk_0 It's just that what is punk rock has changed?
spk_0 There was this counter-culture element to it.
spk_0 We are the new counter-culture.
spk_0 I don't understand why the right,
spk_0 why white males have to tip toe around.
spk_0 We are the punk rock kids, right?
spk_0 And everyone else gets to just yell,
spk_0 what do we want?
spk_0 Dead cops!
spk_0 What are everyone's races?
spk_0 We're the ones pushing back against the status quo
spk_0 of like this elite, you know, globalist,
spk_0 like liberal society.
spk_0 I don't know if the mainstream media knows
spk_0 just how many people are following in the wake
spk_0 and disassembling what they're building
spk_0 because they just keep doing it.
spk_0 I have really good news for you.
spk_0 I just heard that the press is stuck on their aeroplane.
spk_0 They can't get here.
spk_0 I love it.
spk_0 And that's what Trump was.
spk_0 Trump was that figure that was going to come in and reverse it all.
spk_0 They called us and said,
spk_0 could you wait?
spk_0 I said absolutely not.
spk_0 Let's get going.
spk_0 Right?
spk_0 Let's get going, New Hampshire.
spk_0 There's lots of things I hated about the Republicans,
spk_0 but you had to vote for Trump.
spk_0 So, Kevin, it feels like just in this first year
spk_0 of Caleb's watch history,
spk_0 he's come quite a long way from the guy who was excited about Barack Obama
spk_0 or who wanted to study environmental science in college.
spk_0 Right.
spk_0 And it feels to me like it's happening really quickly.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 But all of the stuff that Caleb is going through and experiencing,
spk_0 it all lines up with these changes that are happening at YouTube
spk_0 the very same year.
spk_0 Hey, hold up.
spk_0 This is your minute.
spk_0 It's your minute in this life on this day.
spk_0 It's your day.
spk_0 Deplay.
spk_0 To play.
spk_0 To make.
spk_0 To move.
spk_0 To move.
spk_0 Through.
spk_0 To explore.
spk_0 It's your morning to share.
spk_0 Your weekend.
spk_0 To shape.
spk_0 To cook.
spk_0 To soak.
spk_0 To listen.
spk_0 To.
spk_0 To wait.
spk_0 It's your body.
spk_0 To rest.
spk_0 To nourish.
spk_0 To grow.
spk_0 With your mind.

spk_0 All right, so Kevin, what is happening back at YouTube during this year that Caleb is
spk_0 meeting all these new people?
spk_0 So throughout 2014 and 2015, YouTube is growing an insane amount.
spk_0 And a lot of that is because of this AI that Guillaume helped build.
spk_0 Guillaume, our French friend.
spk_0 Got a billion users that seeing accelerating usage growth.
spk_0 More of the same.
spk_0 More of the same.
spk_0 But around 2015, after Guillaume was gone, YouTube realized that in order to keep growing,
spk_0 it had to do a version of a thing that he had been talking about.
spk_0 It couldn't just keep showing people more and more videos about the things that they were
spk_0 interested in.
spk_0 It had to show them new videos on new subjects, new topics featuring new people.
spk_0 It had to actually expand their tastes, including things they didn't even know they'd want.
spk_0 So YouTube calls in Google Brain.
spk_0 It's the best AI PhDs in the world.
spk_0 They're publishing the most papers.
spk_0 They're winning the most awards.
spk_0 Like this is the A team of AI.
spk_0 And they come in and their job is to re-engineer the recommendations algorithm around this new AI
spk_0 technique called a deep neural network.
spk_0 Which is this AI technique that is supposed to mimic the way the human brain processes information.
spk_0 And basically what you do is you give it a whole bunch of data, in this case like
spk_0 billions and billions of data points about what people are watching on YouTube.
spk_0 And you instruct the AI to go out and find patterns and connections in that data,
spk_0 including stuff that no human would ever think to make.
spk_0 Connections and patterns that no human could ever find.
spk_0 And then you use those connections to recommend paths for people that can draw them into new
spk_0 subject areas that can get them interested in new things that can make them watch not just one more
spk_0 video or two more videos, but like 500 new videos.
spk_0 That's really what feminism is.
spk_0 It's a giant suicide bomber.
spk_0 And if you look at Caleb's watch history, that's when he starts getting introduced to all these
spk_0 new characters. It only leads to death and suffering.
spk_0 I get the idea of trying to show that women are real people too, yadda yadda yadda.
spk_0 And then when he gets a new job in 2016, and then when I got my second job at the warehouse,
spk_0 we were actually allowed to listen to earphones, packing boxes in a warehouse.
spk_0 I stood at a bench all day and put things into boxes.
spk_0 So I was pretty much by myself. His YouTube watch time skyrockets even more.
spk_0 There is a war at the moment between the West and the West.
spk_0 Women are not in a pressed class in the West.
spk_0 There is no music.
spk_0 You know, we were told we'll just obey these moral commands,
spk_0 the same time to call the gym.
spk_0 He's actually spending all day from sun up to sundown online.
spk_0 The people in the bad cultures want to get to the good culture.
spk_0 Not even sundown because I've listened to it in my soul.
spk_0 And it is your first world.
spk_0 It is your kind of service.
spk_0 Put the phone next right next to my head and it would just be running YouTube all night.
spk_0 Moral response.
spk_0 Thank you guys so much for watching.
spk_0 And thank you so much to my amazing Patreon supporters who make it so that I'm able to talk about
spk_0 these scary bigoted subjects.
spk_0 And I did feel very connected with these people.
spk_0 Thank you so much for your patience and time and care and attention.
spk_0 As always, this is all supported by you.
spk_0 Yes you.
spk_0 Not no, no.
spk_0 I'm the guy standing behind you.
spk_0 No.
spk_0 I was like, you know, if only Laura knew how it was, we'd be friends.
spk_0 If staff knew who I was, we'd be friends.
spk_0 It's just that I'm disconnected from these people because I'm stuck in West Virginia.
spk_0 If you look through Caleb's viewing history and added all up,
spk_0 he watched about 4,000 videos in 2016, which is double the number he had the previous year.
spk_0 And around this time, like YouTube's overall viewing time was ratcheting up so much that in 2016,
spk_0 they reached this milestone of a billion hours a day being watched on YouTube.
spk_0 When you get an oversupply of lies, you get a demand for truth.
spk_0 I mean, just raises the demand.
spk_0 And I think that the alternative media, as it's called,
spk_0 bringing sort of reason evidence to our perspective,
spk_0 a billion hours is equal to 114,000 years.
spk_0 That is insane.
spk_0 So every day on YouTube, people collectively around the world are getting up and watching 114,000
spk_0 years worth of videos.
spk_0 This is what we could have colonized bars by now.
spk_0 Oh, that's not what we're here to do.
spk_0 My only source of information was YouTube.
spk_0 This is no longer like a site where you go to watch a video.
spk_0 It's the soundtrack to people's life.
spk_0 I was only listening to Steph, Lauren Southern, Gavin McKennaz.
spk_0 I was not taking my news from anywhere else.
spk_0 And these alternative media figures, these people that Caleb has been following and watching,
spk_0 they're becoming bigger than a lot of the mainstream media organizations that they're criticizing.
spk_0 I built this show from nothing to, you know, coming up to 300 million views and downloads.
spk_0 I started back in 2006 on YouTube.
spk_0 Back then, edgy atheism and liberalism dominated all of YouTube.
spk_0
spk_0 It's amazing how things have changed.
spk_0 Google is a calculator.
spk_0 It's just an algorithm.
spk_0 And the algorithm shows truth.
spk_0 And you can see in his viewing history after the election, like late 2016 or late 2017,
spk_0 you thought I was going to lose.
spk_0 Wrong.
spk_0 You thought Hillary was going to win.
spk_0 Wrong.
spk_0 That's when the tone of the videos that Caleb is watching
spk_0 nobody has to say you because you're a fucking white man who gets to do whatever he wants to in this
spk_0 face.
spk_0 It stops feeling to him like a culture war and it starts feeling like an actual war.
spk_0 Angry demonstrators taking turns being a paper mache likeness of Trump with the bad.
spk_0 I would watch SJW, you know, social justice warrior cringe compilations and all this stuff.
spk_0 Take your privilege somewhere else.
spk_0 Do not be a spectator in the most important battle in history.
spk_0 And Caleb started to notice around this time that he wasn't the same person that he wasn't high
spk_0 school.
spk_0 And I now I'm calling myself a civic nationalist.
spk_0 He is changing.
spk_0 It's not just for America.
spk_0 It's not just for Britain.
spk_0 It's for the identity of the West.
spk_0 It's under attack from radical Islam from cultural Marxists opposed.
spk_0 And I noticed that we all were progressively becoming more and more right wing.
spk_0 Now when he sees a video of Richard Spencer, an open white nationalist.
spk_0 For us as Europeans, it is only normal again when we are great again.
spk_0 Hail Trump.
spk_0 Hail our people.
spk_0 Hail victory.
spk_0 He actually feels like they have something in common.
spk_0 I remember even Richard Spencer going to the hotel in DC.
spk_0 To be white is to be a striver.
spk_0 And, you know, doing the Hail Trump and doing the Zeke Hyland.
spk_0 We don't exploit other groups.
spk_0 They need us and not the other way around.
spk_0 And I remember defending him.
spk_0 I thought, look, it's his right to do that.
spk_0 And it's his free speech.
spk_0 And they're not, that's not a Nazi salute.
spk_0 It's a Roman salute.
spk_0 And I remember saying things like, you know,
spk_0 if they want white nationalism, if they want their own little corner of the country
spk_0 and they all voluntarily move there and do that, that's fine.
spk_0 Immigrants come to this country and do that all the time.
spk_0 There's a Chinatown.
spk_0 There's any, you know, all these things.
spk_0 So it was like, I saw it as like, well, that's their freedom to do so.
spk_0 And like, there's some distance between the Richard Spencer white nationalist movement
spk_0 and like Caleb's favorite YouTubers.
spk_0 You know, Stefan Malony was not having Richard Spencer like on his channel.
spk_0 But I think that white identity and white nationalism is a little misleading.
spk_0 I think it's more accurate to say that the alt-right cares about Western supremacy,
spk_0 rather than white supremacy.
spk_0 It cares about white supremacy.
spk_0 A lot of them are starting to affiliate themselves.
spk_0 I do think that the right overall is going to be changing to a movement
spk_0 that is going more alt-right actually.
spk_0 With this group that Richard Spencer played a key role in starting.
spk_0 So it started with this guy, Richard Spencer.
spk_0 Boop!
spk_0 He came up with a name alt-right, alternative right.
spk_0 And I like this guy.
spk_0 I like debating him.
spk_0 The alt-right.
spk_0 What's the alt-right or alternative right?
spk_0 Some members hold distinctive positions on sex roles,
spk_0 trade and free markets, and foreign policy.
spk_0 But they all agree on one thing.
spk_0 Equality is a dangerous myth.
spk_0 Over time in his YouTube history,
spk_0 you see that Caleb gets recommended videos by this guy named Jared Taylor.
spk_0 For some reason, Jared Taylor got into my algorithm.
spk_0 When it comes to race, I was certainly just as ignorant as you.
spk_0 And Jared Taylor, he's a little different
spk_0 than the other people that Caleb's been watching.
spk_0 It was with great reluctance that I said goodbye
spk_0 to all of these happy fantasies about how we're all essentially replaceable
spk_0 and everyone is the same.
spk_0 He's older.
spk_0 He wears like suits and has a master's degree.
spk_0 Jared Taylor, for some reason, he was soft-spoken,
spk_0 well-mannered, presentable looking.
spk_0 He's not a YouTuber.
spk_0 The science of herality tells us that some people will always be above average.
spk_0 Some people will be above.
spk_0 He was a professional racist before Caleb was born.
spk_0 And his big project has been to kind of
spk_0 make racism respectable by dressing it up
spk_0 in all this quasi-scientific language.
spk_0 And so when Caleb sees him,
spk_0 he's talking about something called race realism.
spk_0 Race realism.
spk_0 You know, the differences in IQ among the races
spk_0 and saying that that explained, you know,
spk_0 why black people are in poverty
spk_0 and why Asians are doing so well in the country.
spk_0 These are biological facts.
spk_0 They're not sociological constructs.
spk_0 I thought we'll look at it.
spk_0 You can see it in reality.
spk_0 But what he does have in common with the other YouTubers
spk_0 that Caleb is watching.
spk_0 So much vital data on these questions
spk_0 is essentially kept underground.
spk_0 Is that he frames his views as a kind of secret knowledge.
spk_0 We evolve from nature
spk_0 and that once you see the logic behind it,
spk_0 and this is how things are.
spk_0 You see that it's the truth.
spk_0 This is the natural world.
spk_0 And this is, you know,
spk_0 black people grew up in Africa
spk_0 and white people grew up in Europe.
spk_0 And this is just how it is.
spk_0 And all this stuff that I'd never,
spk_0 ever believe before.
spk_0 And then at some point,
spk_0 Caleb says he started to do more than just watch YouTube videos.
spk_0 I would have arguments with people
spk_0 and I would try to convince people on things like race realism
spk_0 and mass immigration.
spk_0 The thing I want to talk about today
spk_0 is the great replacement.
spk_0 I'd talk to people that I saw as intelligent.
spk_0 And I'd say you need to have more kids.
spk_0 The funny thing is is that if white people really cared about the world,
spk_0 they would very much wish to preserve white culture.
spk_0 You know, intelligent people are dying out.
spk_0 I'm sure you're aware of what is called the great replacement,
spk_0 the fact that in every western country,
spk_0 the proportion of whites drops every year.
spk_0 Do you really think that the European people in culture
spk_0 are replaceable within a generation with no consequences?
spk_0 Did you read the New Zealand shooters manifesto?
spk_0 I read about the first 15 pages
spk_0 and it was exactly what I believed.
spk_0 Not the violence, but the great replacement.
spk_0 That's what I called it.
spk_0 All those things.
spk_0 That's how I saw the world.
spk_0 That was what I believed.
spk_0 Yes, so when did you feel your views shifting again?
spk_0 So you know...
