spk_0 Got 20 minutes?
spk_0 Then you have time for a Bible study.
spk_0 Hey everyone and welcome again. I'm Andy Baylug.
spk_0 And I'm Jordan Pine. Thanks for joining us.
spk_0 Today we're in the Gospel of Luke, our topic, the Parable of the Pounds.
spk_0 We cited this once before back in 2019 and it's time for a refresher because people often say to us,
spk_0 I'm good with the concept of reward for Christians but not the concept of punishment for Christians.
spk_0 Does God's Word really support that?
spk_0 Please open your Bibles to the Gospel of Luke and get ready to join us for another 20-minute Bible study.
spk_0 A reading from the Gospel of Luke in the New Living Translation, Chapter 19, beginning in verse 11,
spk_0 the crowd was listening to everything Jesus said and because he was nearing Jerusalem,
spk_0 he told him a story to correct the impression that the Kingdom of God would begin right away.
spk_0 He said, a nobleman was called away to a distant empire to be crowned king and then return.
spk_0 With an open mind and an open heart, we seek to take out of the Bible what God has put into it.
spk_0 And that means that it's time to go to space.
spk_0 Space is an acronym that reminds us to identify the SP, A and C, the speaker, audience and context.
spk_0 Before we attempt an E or explanation, the speaker, audience and context are all neatly summarized in verse 11.
spk_0 Our Lord is speaking to the crowd to correct an incorrect impression they had about the Kingdom of God.
spk_0 They thought it would come right away.
spk_0 Jesus wanted them to understand it would come later after his work on the cross was complete.
spk_0 And now that we've covered the speaker, audience and context of this Bible passage,
spk_0 we're ready to continue reading and attempt our explanation.
spk_0 Before he left, he called together 10 of his servants and divided among them 10 pounds of silver saying,
spk_0 invest this for me while I am gone.
spk_0 But his people hated him and said to delegation after him to say,
spk_0 we do not want him to be our king.
spk_0 Okay, so our first point, let's take this point by point.
spk_0 Our first point is that these 10 servants represent 10 saved people.
spk_0 And how do we know that?
spk_0 Here's some evidence from other scriptures where apostles and disciples were called servants.
spk_0 For example, Romans 1-1, Paul calls himself a servant of Christ Jesus.
spk_0 In Colossians 4-12, he writes,
spk_0 a paffress who was one of you, a servant of Christ Jesus.
spk_0 Philippians 1-1, Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus.
spk_0 First Timothy 4-6,
spk_0 if you put these things before the brothers,
spk_0 you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus.
spk_0 That's Paul writing the Timothy.
spk_0 And then we even say Jude 1-1, Jude writes, Jude, a servant of Christ Jesus and brother of James.
spk_0 So that's our first point.
spk_0 The language of the parable is servants.
spk_0 And we know that those who follow Christ, including the apostles and disciples,
spk_0 call themselves servants.
spk_0 Second point is that each received one pound of silver,
spk_0 which by the way is about $10,000 each.
spk_0 And a third point to note is that these servants didn't hate the king.
spk_0 The people who sent a delegation did,
spk_0 and this was directed at the Jewish leaders,
spk_0 saying we do not want him to be our king.
spk_0 Okay, so if some of you are asking, you know, what is a parable?
spk_0 Jordan mentioned that earlier.
spk_0 These verses that we're studying today in Luke are a story that Jesus spoke.
spk_0 And to simply break it down, a parable is just an earthly story used to illustrate a spiritual lesson.
spk_0 Also, we mentioned the word pound.
spk_0 A pound in some translations is also called Amina.
spk_0 And it's good to note that silver was the common currency of people in that day.
spk_0 And silver in typology represents spirit salvation.
spk_0 After he was crowned king, he returned and called into servants to whom he had given the money.
spk_0 He wanted to find out what the prophets were.
spk_0 The first servant reported,
spk_0 I invested your money and made ten times the original amount.
spk_0 Well done, the king exclaimed, you are a good servant.
spk_0 You have been faithful with the little I entrusted to you.
spk_0 So you will be the governor of ten cities as your reward.
spk_0 Yeah, okay, so let's break this section of the passage down.
spk_0 Again, I'll just highlight some points here.
spk_0 One is that it says after he was crowned king,
spk_0 which represents judgment day in typology.
spk_0 Another point is that turning 10,000 into 100,000, 10 times,
spk_0 is what gets the servant a reward of ten cities.
spk_0 A third thing we should notice is that being responsible when the king wasn't around,
spk_0 earns the servant much greater responsibility when the king is around.
spk_0 And finally, what does faithfulness now really earn us later?
spk_0 Is it material gain?
spk_0 No, it's greater responsibility.
spk_0 And that's an important thing to take away from this section of the passage as well.
spk_0 Yeah, Jordan.
spk_0 Also, I want to mention to our listeners that this scene here is occurring at the Bimeseed,
spk_0 also known as the Judgment Seed of Christ.
spk_0 And I'd like to refer to 1 Corinthians chapter 3, verse 12 to 15.
spk_0 So you can kind of see that connection.
spk_0 And I'll read it for you guys.
spk_0 And it says,
spk_0 Now, if any man builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones,
spk_0 would, hey, straw,
spk_0 each man's work will become evident.
spk_0 For the day will show it because it is to be revealed with fire.
spk_0 And the fire itself will test the quality of each man's work.
spk_0 If any man's work, which he has built on it remains, he will receive a reward.
spk_0 If any man's work is burned up, he will suffer lost.
spk_0 And you might want to highlight this in your Bible.
spk_0 But he himself will be saved.
spk_0 So I just wanted to make that note.
spk_0 This is happening at the Bimeseed, which only Christians will be at.
spk_0 And even if there are servants that don't produce any spiritual works,
spk_0 the Bible teaches us that they will still be saved because of their faith in Jesus Christ.
spk_0 The next servant reported,
spk_0 ,
spk_0 ''Master, I invested your money and made five times the original amount.
spk_0 Well done,' said the king.
spk_0 You will be governor over five cities.
spk_0 Okay, so now we can start to compare and contrast.
spk_0 In the previous section, we heard about the servant who turned $10,000.
spk_0 That's the, that's basically the amount he was given into $100,000,
spk_0 10 times and he got a reward of 10 cities.
spk_0 Here we see this servant was given the same amount, 10,000.
spk_0 But there was a different result, which was 50,000 or five times.
spk_0 And he also received a different reward,
spk_0 responsibility for five cities.
spk_0 There's also a slight difference here in how he's praised.
spk_0 The former servant was praised,
spk_0 ''You are a good and faithful servant.''
spk_0 He's praised just well done.
spk_0 So the reason we're pointing these things out is because as we start to understand
spk_0 the representations in the parable,
spk_0 we start to see different levels of reward to those people who are given the same,
spk_0 basically entrusted with the same thing.
spk_0 And for you guys listening,
spk_0 I'm sure by now, if you guys have been following us for many years,
spk_0 you know that we take every word serious in the Bible.
spk_0 I mean, that's our job.
spk_0 Jordan and my job is to diligently study the word
spk_0 and to do our best using scripture to bring out the truth
spk_0 and an explanation with a lot of these difficult verses
spk_0 that we like to tackle for you guys.
spk_0 And each word means something to God.
spk_0 Every word is critical.
spk_0 Now, in these verses, the word good spoken by the king of the parable
spk_0 is more than just a compliment.
spk_0 It actually represents a level of rank that Christian servants will receive
spk_0 in Christ Jesus' 1,000 year millennial kingdom.
spk_0 In comparison, the very similar sounding parable of the talents
spk_0 for those of you who recognize that,
spk_0 which is found in Matthew 24 verse 14 to 29,
spk_0 has a master calling his servants by a different name.
spk_0 They're there called good and faithful.
spk_0 So there's a compound there.
spk_0 Now, this title adds the word faithful to the word good,
spk_0 mentioned in the parable of the pounds that we're studying today.
spk_0 However, in the parable of the talents in Matthew,
spk_0 it sounds like the almost the same type of parable,
spk_0 but it's different.
spk_0 The value of goods being traded in that parable is gold instead of silver.
spk_0 And the reward is a higher rank in Christ's millennial kingdom.
spk_0 That's something we can discuss later.
spk_0 But the third servant brought back only the original amount of money
spk_0 and said, Master, I hid your money and kept it safe.
spk_0 I was afraid because you are a hard man to deal with,
spk_0 taking what isn't yours and harvesting crops you didn't plant.
spk_0 Okay, so again, let's look at some points here.
spk_0 And again, we're just breaking these points down.
spk_0 Eventually, we're going to tie it all together.
spk_0 But in this particular section of the passage,
spk_0 I'd like you to notice that this servant didn't lose what he was given.
spk_0 He just didn't do anything with it.
spk_0 And also, in the original text, it says he literally put the money away
spk_0 in a cloth for wiping perspiration from the face.
spk_0 So Andy, what's exactly is the metaphor here?
spk_0 Well, what we see that this servant has is what we would call today
spk_0 maybe a bandana.
spk_0 And he wraps the silver and what we would call also a work cloth.
spk_0 And that only represents taking God's valuables
spk_0 and trying to trade with self-works.
spk_0 Self-works, right?
spk_0 Imagine a hardworking guy, construction worker working outside.
spk_0 He's got a bandana around his neck.
spk_0 And when he's sweating, he takes it off and wipes his forehead.
spk_0 That kind of represents works of self.
spk_0 The correct way to multiply God's valuables, though,
spk_0 is to allow the Holy Spirit to work through us.
spk_0 And then he produces all the increase.
spk_0 That's what Jesus is looking for.
spk_0 Our job as Christians is to make ourselves spiritually available for God
spk_0 by a few different things.
spk_0 Living a righteous life, confessing our sins,
spk_0 being rooted in his word, and consistently staying in prayer.
spk_0 These are the kind of spiritual lifestyles we need to live.
spk_0 Not trying to serve God based on our own motives
spk_0 or what we can get out of it, or what we feel that God needs
spk_0 from us to serve Him.
spk_0 No, it's just having faith and trusting
spk_0 that the Holy Spirit that's sealed in us can take over
spk_0 and produce all the works that He wants to work through us.
spk_0 You wicked servant, the King Rorgh.
spk_0 Your own words condemn you.
spk_0 If you knew that I'm a hard man who takes what isn't mine
spk_0 and harvests crops I didn't plant,
spk_0 why didn't you deposit my money in the bank?
spk_0 At least I could have gotten some interest on it.
spk_0 Here's the key point.
spk_0 The servant knew, quote unquote,
spk_0 something that wasn't true.
spk_0 What was actually true is that this King took what is ultimately his
spk_0 and he entrusted it to good servants
spk_0 who were then rewarded by being elevated to governors.
spk_0 So it actually wasn't true that he's a hard man
spk_0 who takes what isn't his and harvests crops he didn't plant.
spk_0 He's actually at the exact opposite of the truth in this case
spk_0 as evidenced by what the King actually does
spk_0 and the fact that he was giving these servants what was actually his.
spk_0 And what does Hebrews 11 say?
spk_0 It says quote,
spk_0 it is impossible to please God without faith anyone
spk_0 who wants to come to Him must believe that God exists
spk_0 and that He rewards those who sincerely seek Him.
spk_0 Now there's also an interesting point in here about
spk_0 why didn't you deposit my money in the bank?
spk_0 Here's a question.
spk_0 How is depositing in the bank different than let's say investing?
spk_0 That is an awesome question.
spk_0 I'm sure many deep Bible study
spk_0 brethren out there have probably asked that question
spk_0 or they should ask that question.
spk_0 So my answer to that is subjective.
spk_0 I believe the spiritual bank Jesus is referring to
spk_0 is trusting the Holy Spirit
spk_0 to witness through us whenever the opportunity presents itself.
spk_0 For instance, let me give you an example.
spk_0 Many new Christians believe they aren't qualified to witness
spk_0 until they have a thorough grasp of Scripture.
spk_0 I mean, I hear that all the time,
spk_0 even my own children mentioned that to me in the past.
spk_0 But know that God is aware of that.
spk_0 And at the very least,
spk_0 He wants us to tell people how we came to believe in Christ
spk_0 and then publicly share our story to people that are in our lives.
spk_0 So even if you're a new Christian,
spk_0 my advice based on these verses and based on this teaching
spk_0 in the parable of the pounds,
spk_0 don't be afraid if you're not a master theologian
spk_0 or if you can't remember Scripture or quote Scripture
spk_0 like some people can.
spk_0 But at the very least,
spk_0 show them the love that God showed us.
spk_0 Show them the love that God showed you
spk_0 when God opened your heart to accept Him as Savior.
spk_0 And if you just give them that testimony,
spk_0 that right there is like putting money in a bank.
spk_0 Jesus' spiritual bank account.
spk_0 Yeah, also within the parable itself,
spk_0 it's interesting that, you know,
spk_0 the servants who really invested got 10x and 5x returns.
spk_0 So if we wanted to draw that sort of metaphor,
spk_0 we could say that they were really investing
spk_0 by doing more with the money.
spk_0 And then the wicked servant who didn't even deposit in the bank,
spk_0 he could have gotten at least some small return.
spk_0 So instead, as we said,
spk_0 he wrapped it in his own works and got zero return.
spk_0 So there's even levels within doing something
spk_0 with what God gives you.
spk_0 There's a set of the complicated level of multiplying 10x,
spk_0 even just making it grow a little bit,
spk_0 you know, would have been better than what the wicked servant did.
spk_0 Amen to that.
spk_0 Then, turning to the others standing nearby,
spk_0 the king ordered,
spk_0 take the money from this servant
spk_0 and give it to the one who has 10x.
spk_0 But Master, they said,
spk_0 he already has 10x,
spk_0 yes, the king replied,
spk_0 and to those who use well what they are given,
spk_0 even more will be given.
spk_0 But from those who do nothing,
spk_0 even what little they have will be taken away.
spk_0 May the Lord add his blessing to the reading of his word.
spk_0 Yeah, we don't have to come in much on this,
spk_0 except I just want to reemphasize
spk_0 that this is a why saying at the end here for all of us
spk_0 to those who use well what they are given,
spk_0 even more will be given to those who do nothing,
spk_0 even what little they have will be taken away.
spk_0 So to recap and to tie this all together,
spk_0 we have a king representing Jesus,
spk_0 who entrusts his wealth,
spk_0 which is the Holy Spirit,
spk_0 to three servants,
spk_0 save people,
spk_0 and we establish that by showing all the apostles
spk_0 called themselves servants.
spk_0 And then we have two servants who invest it,
spk_0 that is they multiply it with the works of God,
spk_0 not of themselves,
spk_0 and they're rewarded differently,
spk_0 more rewards for better works.
spk_0 They're elevated from servant to governor,
spk_0 which is those who rule and reign.
spk_0 On the other hand,
spk_0 one servant hides what he's given,
spk_0 he buries it in works of self,
spk_0 doing nothing for God,
spk_0 and he loses what he could have had,
spk_0 the chance to rule and reign.
spk_0 It's given to the best servant.
spk_0 So Andy, what sort of conclusions can we draw from this?
spk_0 Well, Jordan, clearly this can't be about gaining
spk_0 or losing salvation.
spk_0 We know that salvation is by grace through faith,
spk_0 not by works.
spk_0 Clearly, it must be about reward for Christians.
spk_0 That is, reward for good servants
spk_0 and loss of reward for bad servants.
spk_0 Okay, so with that note,
spk_0 I just want to introduce a little bit more about Jordan and I,
spk_0 because I truly believe that parables like this
spk_0 are the root and the drive of why we decided
spk_0 to put this ministry together.
spk_0 The purpose of our ministry is to tell the world
spk_0 about these Kingdom truths.
spk_0 And I'm going to give you some good verses
spk_0 that you could highlight or write down.
spk_0 So you can understand that these are the building blocks
spk_0 that most Christians are missing
spk_0 when they think about them wanting to serve the Lord.
spk_0 And these are the things that we keep in our heart
spk_0 so that we know that we always need to push forward
spk_0 to serve God.
spk_0 Start in Proverbs 9 verse 10.
spk_0 It reads like this,
spk_0 the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,
spk_0 the fear of the Lord.
spk_0 And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
spk_0 We want everyone to understand
spk_0 fearing God is a good thing,
spk_0 as long as you fear Him for the right reason.
spk_0 And the more knowledge you have of Scripture,
spk_0 the more understanding you'll have of God's heart.
spk_0 Also, I want us to look at Matthew chapter 13 verse 10 to 12.
spk_0 And it reads like this,
spk_0 and the disciples came and said to Jesus,
spk_0 why do you speak to them in parables?
spk_0 Jesus answered them.
spk_0 To you it has been granted to know the mysteries
spk_0 of the kingdom of heaven,
spk_0 but to them it has not been granted.
spk_0 For whoever has, to Him more shall be given.
spk_0 Kind of reminds me of the parable we heard today.
spk_0 And he will have an abundance,
spk_0 whoever does not have,
spk_0 even what he has,
spk_0 shall be taken away from him.
spk_0 So there, I mean,
spk_0 I pretty much sums up that
spk_0 the Lord is choosing you, the listener,
spk_0 to learn these truths.
spk_0 It is not by mistake that you're listening
spk_0 to this message today.
spk_0 God is calling you to do bigger and greater things.
spk_0 Don't bury in the sand.
spk_0 Don't hide this gift that was given to you
spk_0 in a hankerchief or a bandana.
spk_0 But ask God to use you every single day.
spk_0 Even if it's something simple,
spk_0 trusting in the Holy Spirit
spk_0 to speak through you about His love.
spk_0 And you know, it kind of reminds me of a famous quote
spk_0 by JFK when he was quoting Edmund Burke.
spk_0 And he said this,
spk_0 the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil
spk_0 is that good men do nothing.
spk_0 Keep that in mind.
spk_0 That's 20 minutes, and that's our lesson.
