spk_0 My name is Ward.
spk_0 Well, unofficially so is mine. Sit down.
spk_0 Thank you.
spk_0 Oh, no, no, no, my pleasure.
spk_0 You must get a dividend from the nylon company.
spk_0 You tell me if there was shortage.
spk_0 I'm well-starved.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 What can I do for you?
spk_0 I'd like to call me Edna.
spk_0 Then what?
spk_0 I'd like you to follow my husband.
spk_0 As a detective or a replacement?
spk_0 I think he's been seeing another woman.
spk_0 Why?
spk_0 Have you been running around the house and diving suit and swim pens?
spk_0 I've always tried to keep myself attracted for my husband, Mr. Diamond.
spk_0 Well, then if your husband is seeing another woman, Mrs. Wolf,
spk_0 it's got to be an optometrist's assistant.
spk_0 Thank you.
spk_0 I think you and I are going to get along just fine.
spk_0 Now that we're all agreed, tell us a more about your husband.
spk_0 What makes you think there's another woman?
spk_0 Usually, the way he's been acting.
spk_0 Business appointments every evening.
spk_0 Nothing else?
spk_0 You received a call late this afternoon.
spk_0 I listened in on the extension. It was a woman.
spk_0 She called the house?
spk_0 George was very unhappy about it.
spk_0 Won't her never to do it again.
spk_0 She give a name?
spk_0 She said, this is Nancy.
spk_0 I must see you here tonight at 8 o'clock.
spk_0 She didn't say where here was, did she?
spk_0 No, George seemed to understand probably her apartment.
spk_0 Probably.
spk_0 If he's seeing another woman, I want a divorce, Mr. Diamond.
spk_0 And you need ground.
spk_0 Yes.
spk_0 A hundred a day in expenses, Mrs. Wolf.
spk_0 Edna.
spk_0 It's still a hundred a day in expenses.
spk_0 Here's two hundred.
spk_0 I hope that's enough of a retainer.
spk_0 Oh, that'll keep me interested in the quite a while.
spk_0 Now, tell me, what does your husband do?
spk_0 I mean his business.
spk_0 He's in steel.
spk_0 How much in?
spk_0 Very much.
spk_0 He's vice president of his company.
spk_0 What does he look like?
spk_0 Here's a picture of him.
spk_0 Well, I'll start right away and see what I can find out for you, Mrs. Edna.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 Well, look, after I found out just how unfair your husband's treating you,
spk_0 I might lend you my shoulder to cry on.
spk_0 And I just about have to call you Edna then.
spk_0 Wouldn't I?
spk_0 By seven o'clock, I was standing across the street from her house,
spk_0 waiting for her wondering husband.
spk_0 By seven thirty a man stepped out on the sidewalk and healed cab.
spk_0 I recognized him from the photograph as George Wolf.
spk_0 And I started the tale, following him east,
spk_0 crossed town to an apartment house on 47th Street.
spk_0 At the time I got in the lobby, it was deserted.
spk_0 A list of names on the mailbox
spk_0 showed the only girl named Nancy in the building was a Nancy Fowler.
spk_0 So I headed for her apartment.
spk_0 Her door was at the far end of the hall.
spk_0 And I was halfway to it when George Wolf dounded out,
spk_0 ran right into me.
spk_0 Let me go.
spk_0 Take your hands off of me.
spk_0 If you got to close the door, get out of my way.
spk_0 It's a matter of friend. You look like you're running into a yard full of snakes.
spk_0 Will you get out of my way or must I use force?
spk_0 I'll use all you like, but I think you better go back and close the door.
spk_0 Oh, no.
spk_0 Yes, yes.
spk_0 Stop it. You can't do this to me.
spk_0 Well, I hope you weren't always this wrong.
spk_0 No, no. Please.
spk_0 Now get in the room.
spk_0 Oh, swell.
spk_0 I wonder you took off like that.
spk_0 I didn't kill her. I swear I didn't kill her.
spk_0 Nancy Fowler?
spk_0 Yes, I guess so.
spk_0 You guess so?
spk_0 Well, this is Miss Fowler's apartment, but I've never seen Nancy Fowler before in my life.
spk_0 There was a 38-revolver lying next to the dead girl,
spk_0 so I took out my own gun and covered Wolf while I called Lieutenant Levinson
spk_0 and a homicide to get right over.
spk_0 Wolf yelled, screamed and pleaded, and even offered me a nice fat bribe.
spk_0 But we waited for Faddy Levinson and his squad of New York's finest.
spk_0 He finally arrived, but New York's finest was poorly represented.
spk_0 Hello, Shameless.
spk_0 In trouble again.
spk_0 Walt, did you have to bring Otis?
spk_0 I promised he hasn't used the siren in four days.
spk_0 Who's this guy?
spk_0 George Wolf caught him running out of the door.
spk_0 Well, Mr. Wolf, what about it?
spk_0 I had nothing to do with it, but I'm not saying any more until I see my lawyer.
spk_0 He was crying all over the place before you got here, Walt.
spk_0 Landy got a call from an Nancy Fowler who asked him to come up here.
spk_0 That's a truth, Lieutenant.
spk_0 She said she had something important to tell me.
spk_0 Says he never even heard an Nancy Fowler before the call.
spk_0 That also is the truth.
spk_0 When I came to the apartment, I found her lying just as you see her.
spk_0 How'd you get in the door?
spk_0 She told me she'd leave it open for me to walk right in.
spk_0 Well, it came out the fact just below the shoulder plate, Walt, Lieutenant.
spk_0 You're on the gun, Mr. Wolf.
spk_0 I refuse to answer any more questions.
spk_0 OK, take him down to the car, Otis.
spk_0 Come on, you.
spk_0 Greg, just how did you happen to be in this building at this particular time?
spk_0 Love was hard, but that guy's wife, the tail-in.
spk_0 He was supposed to be playing illegal footsies with a female named Nancy.
spk_0 The dead girl?
spk_0 Huh?
spk_0 The wife just knew the first name was Nancy.
spk_0 The girl who's supposed to live here is named Nancy. Nancy Fowler.
spk_0 I've never seen her before.
spk_0 Maybe the dead girl is one and the same.
spk_0 Well, I'm getting an identification.
spk_0 I have the gun checked by ballistics.
spk_0 In the meantime, I'm going to give this apartment a good going over.
spk_0 Mind if I help?
spk_0 Now what kind of an answer do you expect that you will anyway?
spk_0 You were so right.
spk_0 We started going over the apartment room by room, closets, drawers, everything.
spk_0 And ten minutes, the coroner and the boys from the lab arrived.
spk_0 And in the bedroom, Walt found something.
spk_0 Take a look at this.
spk_0 Ah, jewelry box.
spk_0 Pretty expensive.
spk_0 Regal jewelers.
spk_0 Very classy establishment.
spk_0 Has a card in the box.
spk_0 For my darling, love George.
spk_0 And the guy said he never saw her before.
spk_0 If this is his handwriting, he's as good as strapped in the chair.
spk_0 Well, it looked as if my client Mrs. Wolf had a killer for a husband.
spk_0 But a couple of small items still worried me.
spk_0 So I left Walt and went downstairs to find the switchboard operator.
spk_0 Oh, you were the police.
spk_0 I just left them.
spk_0 Tell me, dear, do you keep a list of the calls that are made through the switchboard?
spk_0 Sure, cost the tenants ten soon to call.
spk_0 Me, I see the list.
spk_0 Yeah, I guess so.
spk_0 Here, handsome.
spk_0 Gee, nobody's called me that since I had long blonde curls and a gold yo-yo.
spk_0 I looked over the list of telephone calls and found the ones made by Nancy Fowler during the past three or four days.
spk_0 The last call listed from her apartment had been made at 745 that evening to a familiar telephone number.
spk_0 The same number Mrs. Wolf had given me when she left my office earlier.
spk_0 I left for the home of Mrs. Edna Wolf.
spk_0 Yes, oh, Mr. Diamond, you shouldn't come here. What if my husband...
spk_0 Your husband's spending the night out and a cell all alone.
spk_0 Oh, you'd better come in.
spk_0 Now, what in the world are you talking about?
spk_0 It looks as if your husband killed a girl this evening.
spk_0 Oh, no.
spk_0 That's a way it looks.
spk_0 Oh, please, sit down, Mr. Diamond.
spk_0 Thanks.
spk_0 I caught him running out of the girls' apartment forced in back and found the girls shot the death in the floor.
spk_0 Nancy Fowler?
spk_0 Yes, I think so.
spk_0 It was her apartment.
spk_0 The police are making a dedication now.
spk_0 Oh, it's just terror.
spk_0 I wonder why he did it.
spk_0 Were you here in the house at 730 this evening?
spk_0 No, I was with a friend until about 830.
spk_0 Well, a call was made to your house from Nancy Fowler's apartment.
spk_0 She was charged for it so the call was completed.
spk_0 Which you probably talked to George.
spk_0 Your husband's where as he did not a girl claims he got a phone call and she asked him to come right over.
spk_0 As she had something to tell her.
spk_0 She knew her alright.
spk_0 You remember, I told you I ever heard them talking.
spk_0 Your husband own a gun?
spk_0 Yes, I believe so.
spk_0 You know what, Calibur?
spk_0 No.
spk_0 I don't know anything about guns.
spk_0 A bracelet was found in the dead girl's apartment, the card with it was signed love.
spk_0 George.
spk_0 It looked pretty bad, doesn't it?
spk_0 If it's his handwriting it does.
spk_0 Well, I guess he deserves it, but I'll call our lawyer and see what can be done.
spk_0 I'll keep in touch, Mrs. Wolf.
spk_0 I hope you will.
spk_0 Just because the case is finished.
spk_0 Well, there are still a few things that bother me, so I'll just kind of keep looking around until I'm satisfied.
spk_0 You mean you think maybe my husband didn't kill the girl?
spk_0 There's a lot of evidence that he did, but there's still a motive to be found.
spk_0 You've got the grounds you wanted, so from here on in anything I do for you or your husband will be on my own time.
spk_0 Anything you do for my husband ought to be glad to pay for.
spk_0 Oh, well, no, that's really nice.
spk_0 Well, I'll take a run down at the precinct and let you know what the lieutenants found out.
spk_0 Good night, Mrs. Wolf.
spk_0 Dill can't get used to it.
spk_0 It'll take a while.
spk_0 But you'd be in bed by now, Rick.
spk_0 My landlord short-sheeted me.
spk_0 What did you find out, Walt?
spk_0 The dead girl was Nancy Fowler.
spk_0 Figured.
spk_0 And George Wolpe did do the killing.
spk_0 Is gun?
spk_0 Yeah, we checked the registration.
spk_0 His gun, his fingerprints on it, his hand writing on the note in the jewelry case.
spk_0 What does he say about the bracelet in the note?
spk_0 He bought it all right, we checked.
spk_0 Riggle Jolus says it was for his wife.
spk_0 You expect him to say something different?
spk_0 No.
spk_0 What's the motive?
spk_0 Well, find it. Probably another man.
spk_0 Is the report on the dead girl lieutenant?
spk_0 Wow.
spk_0 Isn't it a little late for your orders?
spk_0 Why aren't you out flying around some belfry?
spk_0 He's picking on me again, lieutenant.
spk_0 Maybe you'd like me to tell him about the time I caught you sleeping in the attic hanging by your toes.
spk_0 Oh, not you, total lieutenant.
spk_0 Orders, I hear you've been picking up some extra money posing for Charles Adams.
spk_0 I don't have to take this.
spk_0 I know my rights and I ain't no bad.
spk_0 Here's something on the dead girl.
spk_0 She works at the Gilded Change and Night Club on by a young.
spk_0 A young?
spk_0 Well, is a nice little fella.
spk_0 He'd said, far to his grandmother if he thought it was too cold in the room.
spk_0 Well, I've a talk with him tomorrow.
spk_0 And I guess I better be going.
spk_0 You're a sail-hander.
spk_0 Oh, could you use some sleep?
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 And a wreck.
spk_0 When you get over to Eddie Young's club, give him my best.
spk_0 Smarty.
spk_0 The Gilded Cage, where Eddie Young ruled his proprietor and keep it for his flock of hard guerrillas,
spk_0 was only about six blocks away, so I decided to walk it.
spk_0 But like always, I start in one direction and end up getting sidetracked.
spk_0 Keep walking, Diamond.
spk_0 Don't turn around.
spk_0 Huh?
spk_0 You caught me when I'm riding the mood.
spk_0 You turn around, I shoot you.
spk_0 It's a matter, don't you want me to spot your Tony?
spk_0 Over to that car.
spk_0 Okay.
spk_0 Put Polk on your muzzle's cold.
spk_0 You drive.
spk_0 I'll get in the back.
spk_0 Oh, I forgot my glasses.
spk_0 Can't see three feet without them.
spk_0 Get in.
spk_0 And I have a restricted driver's license.
spk_0 You'll want it right here?
spk_0 I can wait.
spk_0 Where to?
spk_0 Just start driving and don't turn around.
spk_0 We headed east across Tom with a gun pointed at my neck.
spk_0 I tried to get a look at the guy in the rear of vision mirror, but he was sitting too far to one side.
spk_0 I didn't know where we were headed, but it had a pretty good hunch why we were going there.
spk_0 Turn right.
spk_0 I'm taking a little slower.
spk_0 I don't want to have to shoot a cop.
spk_0 If we're headed for the river, I've seen it from the bottom.
spk_0 Don't you think we'd better stop at a bathhouse or something?
spk_0 I know it's spot for you.
spk_0 You can go in close and off.
spk_0 Okay.
spk_0 But if there's anything I hate, it's getting my money wet.
spk_0 Turn right again.
spk_0 We were headed for cross-speed.
spk_0 I could only turn right or left.
spk_0 My big warehouse was dead ahead.
spk_0 I eased down on the gas and we picked up speed as we near the intersection.
spk_0 As I started to make the turn, I stamped down on the gas fire.
spk_0 And at the same time through myself turned to floorboard.
spk_0 His gun went off so close to my ear.
spk_0 I felt like my head had split wide open.
spk_0 Then we hit the building.
spk_0 We had hit the building and pushed our way halfway through the brick wall.
spk_0 I was still on the floor and the mortar had been shoved through the fire wall
spk_0 and was jammed into the front seat where I'd been sitting a minute before.
spk_0 My friend with a gun was stretched out over the top of the seat.
spk_0 His legs resting on the horn and his shoulders through the windshield.
spk_0 I sat up, rolled him off the horn.
spk_0 He was very dead.
spk_0 Before a crowd could collect, I climbed out and got to a phone call wall.
spk_0 Are you sure you're all right, Rick?
spk_0 Yeah, I can hear things better now.
spk_0 I just said the other guy is dead.
spk_0 Very, yeah.
spk_0 I recognized him too. Gus Winkler.
spk_0 Holy cow.
spk_0 You know who he's working for now?
spk_0 No.
spk_0 Hit a young.
spk_0 Oh, that's it.
spk_0 Well, don't pick young up all that.
spk_0 I know a few things I haven't told you about.
spk_0 It's almost puts a cinch on it.
spk_0 I want to talk to young and I'll be down to see you.
spk_0 But if young, try it to have your kill.
spk_0 Oh, if he did, you can't prove it.
spk_0 Not yet, anyway.
spk_0 So sit tight.
spk_0 When I get there, I'll show you how to catch a killer.
spk_0 Are you going someplace, chump?
spk_0 Yeah. Right through that door.
spk_0 I just missed a young's office.
spk_0 Maybe he don't want to see it.
spk_0 Maybe he don't.
spk_0 He's going to be disappointed.
spk_0 Are you going to go on in there, chump?
spk_0 You see?
spk_0 Everybody gets disappointed sooner or later, chump?
spk_0 Yeah, wait.
spk_0 Why don't you go in the wrong room?
spk_0 That's what your boy outside thought.
spk_0 I changed his mind.
spk_0 Are you sure you ain't looking for a Bellevue, chump?
spk_0 It kind of a miss.
spk_0 One of your boys, Gus Winkler, try to give me swimming lessons.
spk_0 You can claim his body at the mord.
spk_0 I don't know what you're talking about.
spk_0 Somebody else who works for you got killed on I2.
spk_0 Yeah, who?
spk_0 Nancy Fowler.
spk_0 What?
spk_0 Oh, come on, Eddie.
spk_0 I couldn't stand it if you started crying.
spk_0 Who killed her?
spk_0 The police are holding a man named George Woll.
spk_0 Know him?
spk_0 No, I don't know him, but Nancy's talked about him a couple of times.
spk_0 Hey, boy, I said, can I just...
spk_0 Forget it, Lou.
spk_0 Forget it.
spk_0 Well, you got one.
spk_0 Okay.
spk_0 You know, Shama's lose a pretty big boy.
spk_0 You have to go push him around.
spk_0 He's like a little stay man.
spk_0 So Nancy said she knew this George Woll.
spk_0 That's right.
spk_0 Richard will go out and I'll wish he talked.
spk_0 He was taking him.
spk_0 Good.
spk_0 Wherever you were doing seven and eight this evening.
spk_0 Right here in this office.
spk_0 I got witness.
spk_0 Oh, that you have.
spk_0 Okay, Eddie. I'll see you around.
spk_0 I left the office knowing how close I was to the whole answer
spk_0 and called Walter, the precinct.
spk_0 I told him to meet me up the block from the gilded cage
spk_0 and ten minutes later you pulled a squad car out of the curb
spk_0 and I climbed in.
spk_0 You find out anything?
spk_0 Yeah, but I have to know one thing first.
spk_0 What time was Nancy followed, killed?
spk_0 Garnes report puts it at 7.30.
spk_0 No, that ties it.
spk_0 Now would you mind telling me what it's all about?
spk_0 I'll do better than that wall. I'll show you.
spk_0 But we've got to wait until Eddie Young leaves the cafe and goes home.
spk_0 It was around 12.30 and we settled back to Wade.
spk_0 And with an impatient cop sitting next to me, it wasn't easy.
spk_0 Around one in the morning a boy brought Eddie Young's convertible up in front.
spk_0 We watched Eddie climb in.
spk_0 Okay, Walter, tell him.
spk_0 We stayed close following Eddie Young across town until he pulled up in front of his department
spk_0 and turned into the basement to ride.
spk_0 Can you fight me, it's wall.
spk_0 Then come on up to Young's apartment.
spk_0 Why can't I go now?
spk_0 Because what I'm about to do isn't quite legal.
spk_0 And I couldn't stand seeing you blush.
spk_0 That's not a good idea.
spk_0 Hold it, Eddie.
spk_0 Hey, what's going on?
spk_0 When you're all on a keg, you're...
spk_0 I'll put away that gun, will you?
spk_0 What do you want?
spk_0 That's good up to your apartments.
spk_0 But please believe me Eddie.
spk_0 I'll do something bad if you get out of line.
spk_0 We rode the elevator up to Eddie's eight floor apartments.
spk_0 I shoved him in the door, I had him in and made sure
spk_0 there was no one else around to give me any trouble.
spk_0 All right, all right.
spk_0 What do you want?
spk_0 Pick up that phone.
spk_0 Okay, we'll take it easy.
spk_0 Well, who do you want me to call?
spk_0 This number and the hurry.
spk_0 I'll tell you what to say.
spk_0 Okay, I don't get this.
spk_0 I agree.
spk_0 Three.
spk_0 What's about it? Don't you like that number, Eddie?
spk_0 I don't even know them.
spk_0 Come and dial it quick.
spk_0 Okay.
spk_0 And when you get an answer, just say, this is Eddie.
spk_0 Get right over here. I've got to see you.
spk_0 And I'll look, Sharma.
spk_0 You look, Eddie.
spk_0 I'm going to hold this barrel right between your eyes
spk_0 so you can see it coming. You can make a mistake.
spk_0 I won't make a mistake.
spk_0 Hello. This is Eddie.
spk_0 Yeah, get right over here. I've got to see you.
spk_0 I can't talk. Goodbye.
spk_0 Okay, now, we'll take that gun away.
spk_0 You look a little worried.
spk_0 What have I got to be worried about?
spk_0 I don't know why I'm talking to you.
spk_0 That should be the law, Eddie.
spk_0 What is this, timing?
spk_0 I'm sorry. I can't show you right now.
spk_0 Good night, Eddie.
spk_0 Wait a minute, you...
spk_0 Come on in, Walt.
spk_0 You said five minutes.
spk_0 Holy smoke, what happened to him?
spk_0 I just put him to sleep.
spk_0 Say that way for a while.
spk_0 Now, Rick, you've got to tell me what's going on.
spk_0 I told you, I'll show you.
spk_0 Now, go on in the kitchen and see if you can find some ketchup.
spk_0 Catch him?
spk_0 Yeah, I'm going to bring it out here and pour it all over you.
spk_0 Have you lost your mind, Walt?
spk_0 Yeah, I wanted to make it look like he's bleeding.
spk_0 I'll go find the ketchup, or I'll just have to cut his throat.
spk_0 Walt found the ketchup and under protest
spk_0 poured it over the unconscious Eddie Young.
spk_0 Then I made sure the door was unlocked
spk_0 and we went on the hall to wait.
spk_0 Please, Rick. What is this?
spk_0 It's the same way Nancy Poughler killing was framed.
spk_0 Only she was really killed.
spk_0 Right, elevator.
spk_0 Okay, play along with it.
spk_0 Let's go, Walt.
spk_0 No!
spk_0 All right, hold it, Walt.
spk_0 Oh, Mr. Dermott, he said he said he said he's here.
spk_0 He's on guard with blood.
spk_0 Why did you kill him?
spk_0 Kill him. I didn't kill him. I just got here.
spk_0 Don't let you in.
spk_0 He told me the door would be open.
spk_0 I didn't know you knew Eddie Young.
spk_0 Well, I guess I know him as an old friend.
spk_0 Why? This is Lieutenant Levinson, Mrs. Walt.
spk_0 He's the man who arrested your husband for the murder of Nancy Poughler.
spk_0 Lieutenant, I swear I didn't kill Eddie.
spk_0 Looks bad, Mrs. Walt.
spk_0 Why didn't I want to kill Eddie?
spk_0 Why would your husband want to kill Nancy Poughler?
spk_0 I don't know. What has that got to do with this?
spk_0 You told me you didn't know Nancy Poughler.
spk_0 I didn't.
spk_0 You know Eddie and Nancy worked for it now.
spk_0 Well, I didn't know it. I didn't know Eddie that well.
spk_0 You said a girl called your husband and said her name as Nancy.
spk_0 Yes, it's right.
spk_0 You told me you didn't know her last name.
spk_0 And yet when I came over and told you your husband had just killed a girl,
spk_0 you were asking me if it was Nancy Poughler.
spk_0 That's all I have.
spk_0 You said that Nancy phoned your husband at afternoon.
spk_0 She did. She did. I swear. She did.
spk_0 And yet Nancy Poughler's will tell switchboard has no record of a call being made your phone
spk_0 any time in the afternoon.
spk_0 They made a mistake.
spk_0 But at 7.45, a call was made from Nancy's apartment to your phone number.
spk_0 And she must have called my husband again.
spk_0 According to the carna's report, Nancy Poughler was dead at 7.30.
spk_0 Oh, my goodness.
spk_0 Mrs. Wolf, I can swear your husband didn't go into that building until 8 o'clock.
spk_0 I was following him.
spk_0 I guess his husband's making a difference with Eddie dead.
spk_0 Did Eddie kill a girl?
spk_0 Yes.
spk_0 I called my husband.
spk_0 I wanted to get a divorce.
