spk_0 Spruce from the LGBT community
spk_0 How's it going everybody? I am Quippie Tasha
spk_0 And I'm Rosalind Sable
spk_0 And you are listening to the Quippie Pasta show
spk_0 Yay!
spk_0 Woo!
spk_0 Woo!
spk_0 So, we've made it, we've put our pilot series out
spk_0 The six episodes we wanted to get out by the end of the year
spk_0 So, what we're doing now with the Quippie Pasta show
spk_0 Is something we are wanting to do maybe monthly
spk_0 Where we can go back and talk about the stories we have narrated
spk_0 We can also use this time to bring on guests
spk_0 And talk about Quinnis in horror fiction
spk_0 And just speak to you peeps as well
spk_0 So, Rosalind, how do you think it's going so far?
spk_0 Yeah, it's going well, how are you?
spk_0 I'm doing well
spk_0 We've had a busy day today
spk_0 Listening to every episode we've produced so far
spk_0 Oh dear
spk_0 I know, it's been a ride
spk_0 It's great listening to your own voice
spk_0 Oh totally
spk_0 But I think we can both agree that the other one is the better narrator
spk_0 It's if by you you mean you
spk_0 It's definitely you
spk_0 You are correct
spk_0 Like we're on that
spk_0 I'm doing you
spk_0 Yeah, it's a great collection of stories
spk_0 I think every single one of them we got from the No Sleep subreddit
spk_0 And it's just such a great community
spk_0 Well, I mean you say we, but full disclosure here
spk_0 You did a lot of the footwork finding the stories
spk_0 Well, it's interesting how we found the stories actually
spk_0 On No Sleep and various other Quippie Pasta subreddits
spk_0 I made some posts saying
spk_0 Hey, do you know any stories with LGBTQ representation
spk_0 We would be able to narrate
spk_0 Yeah, as you would expect
spk_0 There was mixed response from some of the creep vassar groups
spk_0 But the response was on the whole very good
spk_0 And with No Sleep there's never been any problems there
spk_0 In fact, I think it was fifth dimension freak
spk_0 They were one of the authors who offered their story that way
spk_0 I think the first few stories we found
spk_0 The first was a ratio
spk_0 Then it was queer
spk_0 You also had a look for some stories
spk_0 And you did find one that you narrated, didn't you?
spk_0 Yeah, but unfortunately we couldn't release it
spk_0 Because I could not get in touch with the author at all
spk_0 Sad
spk_0 Yeah, I really wanted to do that one as well
spk_0 That was quite like that one
spk_0 Yeah, I can, can we shout out recommendation for it maybe?
spk_0 Absolutely
spk_0 Yeah, so it's called
spk_0 You know what?
spk_0 Actually
spk_0 I believe in the one, wasn't it?
spk_0 Yes, that's it, it's called
spk_0 I believe in the one
spk_0 I can't breathe anymore, zero
spk_0 And yeah, I quite enjoyed that story
spk_0 I really wish that we could have done a proper narration of it
spk_0 And released it
spk_0 It's just a shame we couldn't get in touch with the author about it
spk_0 I think it was gay representation
spk_0 Mm-hmm
spk_0 Yeah, it centers around a gay male couple
spk_0 And yeah, I don't really want to ruin the story for anyone
spk_0 But I quite like the way it goes
spk_0 We are definitely going to be going through spoilers on all of the stories
spk_0 We have narrated so far
spk_0 So if you haven't listened to any of our narrations yet
spk_0 I would recommend to go back and listen to those stories first
spk_0 Although if you want to be a rebel
spk_0 And listen to this anyway
spk_0 And then go back and listen to them then
spk_0 You know, fair play to you
spk_0 Every night's that
spk_0 Yeah, so the first story we narrated was called this little grin
spk_0 Who's the author for that one?
spk_0 I can't remember
spk_0 Oh, I don't know, somebody I've never thought about
spk_0 So nobody
spk_0 Oh, it was me, what's it meant?
spk_0 That's right
spk_0 It's the little grin
spk_0 That was the first story we released anyway
spk_0 That wasn't the first story I narrated
spk_0 Actually the
spk_0 I actually narrated another story I wrote called I Caught a Hair
spk_0 Which we haven't released yet
spk_0 We might release it further down the line
spk_0 It is recorded anyway
spk_0 Really like
spk_0 Excuse me, I really liked I caught hair
spk_0 I liked it too
spk_0 It's my kind of humor in it
spk_0 The skeletal grin
spk_0 I wanted to have one
spk_0 I wanted to have one there
spk_0 Because if I'm going to use one of my own stories
spk_0 I wanted to be one with the strongest LGBT representation
spk_0 Of course skeletal grin has a lesbian protagonist
spk_0 It's one of my favourite stories I've written
spk_0 That and I caught a hair
spk_0 I don't think I've put
spk_0 I caught a hair on the internet
spk_0 So she probably posted at some point
spk_0 I don't care
spk_0 Absolutely
spk_0 So before we move on here is a clip
spk_0 But death remained
spk_0 I stopped laughing
spk_0 And after a moment
spk_0 I saw the first movement from the apparition
spk_0 Slowly
spk_0 So slowly it was
spk_0 Almost imperceptible
spk_0 His skull began to turn
spk_0 This puzzled and fascinated me as I watched
spk_0 For several minutes
spk_0 That intriguing skull rotates
spk_0 90 degrees towards the wall on my right
spk_0 And again his posture froze
spk_0 How did you find
spk_0 Comparatively to the other stories that we've done
spk_0 I imagine this is a bit different considering
spk_0 You're narrating something you yourself have written
spk_0 So I would imagine you
spk_0 Know the correct cadence to put on things
spk_0 The emphasis
spk_0 The pacing of it
spk_0 It's great narrators narrating stories they've written themselves
spk_0 When you're writing a story
spk_0 You're often writing it in your own voice
spk_0 So it is really easy to narrate
spk_0 You know exactly how each line is supposed to be read
spk_0 For other authors who work you really need to go deep into the story
spk_0 And think carefully about who this character is and how do they sound
spk_0 How they actually sing each line
spk_0 The skeletal grin was the story I narrated after I caught her hair
spk_0 So the first two stories I narrated were stories I wrote myself
spk_0 Which gave me an easier time studying out I think
spk_0 Yeah it's easier with some stories and others as well
spk_0 Some are more descriptive about the way the
spk_0 The speech is done
spk_0 But yeah that was one of your first narrations wasn't it
spk_0 So looking back now after doing a few and finishing the pilot series
spk_0 Do you think there's anything different you would do?
spk_0 I think I could probably do better on the production
spk_0 Because there's a lot of voice acting which is quite loud
spk_0 Like shouting like no no
spk_0 And it started to shout in a scared or
spk_0 And be way into a microphone when you're just doing a normal narration
spk_0 Because you'll peak your levels
spk_0 I don't think I really had the skill back then to really balance out all the levels
spk_0 Or even like move the microwave so I can shout it
spk_0 A loud amplitude
spk_0 So it sounds like I'm shouting but not blowing out the listening z-trumps
spk_0 So I think I've learnt I could do a lot more on production
spk_0 I think I would have narrated it the same way
spk_0 I really liked your narration of it
spk_0 Like the way you conveyed the main characters
spk_0 I don't think the name of the main characters I mentioned actually was it
spk_0 No I don't think I named the main character the Chitin Wifeer named
spk_0 But when the main character is experiencing unease, fear, panic, raven curiosity
spk_0 That does come through very well in your voice I personally think
spk_0 Oh thank you
spk_0 I tried to anyway I mean there's a lot of subtlety in the story
spk_0 Like the whole metaphor with the butterflies
spk_0 She's in a room
spk_0 Well she's terrified of death
spk_0 And she's surrounded by walls which are literally covered floor to ceiling
spk_0 With the bodies of dead butterflies
spk_0 So she's in this cage of death which she's created for herself
spk_0 And that's kind of ironic that we're just a position of a fear of death at the same time
spk_0 Yeah I feel like I can sort of relate to that because it's like as you personally know
spk_0 I have a quite a fear of spiders
spk_0 I love looking at them though
spk_0 I think they're very interesting and it is almost like a morbid fascination
spk_0 Yeah
spk_0 Because I'm terrified of them as well
spk_0 It's something along those lines yeah
spk_0 And kind of personally also got the impression that it also kind of maybe represented the fragility of life
spk_0 Yeah in fact it's portrayed as the way that
spk_0 It begins the way that
spk_0 Sorry it ends the way that it begins where
spk_0 She's fascinated by this butterfly on a windowsill
spk_0 Which then dies
spk_0 She cherishes this butterfly
spk_0 This vibrant and evil thing emanating
spk_0 Vitality
spk_0 And it just dies
spk_0 And even though its colours are still there
spk_0 It's lost all its vibrance
spk_0 Then exactly the same thing happens when of course she's holding her wife in her arms at the end
spk_0 So it loops back on itself straight back to the
spk_0 That perm or verse
spk_0 With this little grin
spk_0 I would say
spk_0 Scalatal grin is one of my favourites
spk_0 I would disagree
spk_0 I definitely prefer your narrations
spk_0 A couple of your stories
spk_0 You would say that though wouldn't you
spk_0 Yes
spk_0 No you
spk_0 So
spk_0 Yeah it's kind of inspired by
spk_0 Well I used to live in India when I was around 10 to 13
spk_0 And I remember what life was like back then
spk_0 Like Madras and of course
spk_0 Madras is now Chennai
spk_0 And that changed relatively recently
spk_0 But I think that helps to show that it was in the before times when the story was set
spk_0 The long long ago
spk_0 But the story is really inspired by Jim Henson's story teller
spk_0 Do you know it's Jim Henson's story teller
spk_0 Jim Henson is that guy with the mocks
spk_0 Yeah
spk_0 And Sesame Street he also did
spk_0 Oh god
spk_0 The story teller
spk_0 A few other movies
spk_0 God why can't I think of them now
spk_0 Oh blablablabla
spk_0 Dark Crystal and Labyrinth
spk_0 Yeah I love Labyrinth
spk_0 I surprisingly have never seen Dark Crystal
spk_0 Really
spk_0 Wow I absolutely love the series they did on Netflix
spk_0 It might even be better than the movie
spk_0 When I heard they were going back to it
spk_0 Of course you think
spk_0 It's going to ruin it all with CGI
spk_0 And they did use CGI
spk_0 But it was really well used
spk_0 And they still relied mostly on physical puppets and sets
spk_0 Which was really great
spk_0 With
spk_0 We're going a little off topic here
spk_0 The reason I bring up Jim Henson's story teller
spk_0 Is that there's one story called the soldier and death
spk_0 And it's just a really great story great characters
spk_0 It was about a soldier
spk_0 And I think he does a favor for someone while he's coming from war
spk_0 And this person rewards him with a sack
spk_0 Which anything he commands will get in the sack
spk_0 So he just says to anything like hey geese
spk_0 Get in my sack
spk_0 And a whole flock of geese will just get in the sack
spk_0 It's kind of like the bag of holding
spk_0 You know from Dungeons & Dragons
spk_0 Oh without going into the full plot
spk_0 At one point he orders death to get into his sack
spk_0 And the way death is portrayed in the series he's a short
spk_0 A short man white with black robes
spk_0 And he sits at the foot of people's beds
spk_0 Then as they get closer to death
spk_0 Death moods closer and closer to the head of the bed
spk_0 So he finds death at the head of someone's bed
spk_0 So he commands death to get into the sack
spk_0 There's nobody dies anymore
spk_0 Everyone lives forever and it was great for a few hundred years
spk_0 Until everyone was bored and tired
spk_0 And just wanting death to come but he never comes
spk_0 So the man lets death back into the world
spk_0 But death never returns for him
spk_0 Because he's scared he'll be put back in the sack
spk_0 That's brilliant
spk_0 I mean nobody wants to be put in a sack with a flock of geese
spk_0 Geese are evil
spk_0 Death versus geese who would win
spk_0 I had an interesting time actually
spk_0 With that trying to figure out why the Grim Reaper
spk_0 Appeared to the main character
spk_0 And I don't know I'm sort of in this two frames of mind
spk_0 Whether it's like it could be that the
spk_0 The main character herself is close to death
spk_0 In a way she's very ill
spk_0 At the time of the story
spk_0 And I thought maybe that's how she was able to perceive him
spk_0 Or it could even I don't know
spk_0 Be a total fever dream
spk_0 Yeah
spk_0 But I enjoyed that about
spk_0 Sorry I enjoyed that about certain stories
spk_0 The just leaving it out there in the open
spk_0 Yeah it's not explained at all
spk_0 And there's no logical explanation for it
spk_0 It's just you could just make connections
spk_0 That it was just a fever dream
spk_0 There's just a fever
spk_0 It could be this connection to butterflies that she has
spk_0 That her life is just going out of murdering butterflies
spk_0 And crucifying them on her wall
spk_0 So it could be that connection
spk_0 But there's also the question about
spk_0 Why does death not come back for her
spk_0 It could be that death is just drawing her
spk_0 And she was on a deathbed
spk_0 And
spk_0 But she was really cocky to him
spk_0 And he was like
spk_0 You know, fuck that
spk_0 You deal with it now
spk_0 So yeah, that was it's little grin
spk_0 So next up
spk_0 In this series was
spk_0 Congratulations
spk_0 Sorry it's the full name
spk_0 Because I keep
spk_0 We refer to a lot of the videos with
spk_0 Truncated names
spk_0 There is a hidden video on Netflix called
spk_0 Congratulations38.avi
spk_0 Yeah
spk_0 Is the next one in the series
spk_0 And this was my first narration that we published
spk_0 It's also my shortest
spk_0 It is our shortest
spk_0 What was it like six rate minutes
spk_0 Yeah, it's about five, six minutes
spk_0 Yeah, I hit the play button
spk_0 It started with about five seconds of static
spk_0 Then a black screen came up with the words
spk_0 Congratulations
spk_0 Being typed onto it
spk_0 The words disappeared
spk_0 And the sound of a high-pitched woman's voice repeating
spk_0 Ha!
spk_0 Started playing
spk_0 The black screen turned to a shot of a forest with the words
spk_0 Open your eyes being typed onto the screen
spk_0 Yeah, it was very strange
spk_0 After doing a few
spk_0 Different narrations
spk_0 Now, and then going back and listening to it
spk_0 And my first attempt
spk_0 Because I had tried narrating things before
spk_0 But this was the first one where I'd actually done any kind of production
spk_0 I really liked it
spk_0 And you did a great job on the sound effects
spk_0 And the ambience as well
spk_0 And it really took me by surprise
spk_0 And it was your first time doing anything like this
spk_0 It wasn't just the narration
spk_0 I thought you did a great job
spk_0 And you were so worried about it
spk_0 And it turned out fantastic
spk_0 And I was very jealous because
spk_0 It was better than mine
spk_0 Well, Tasha's bias is aside
spk_0 Ha!
spk_0
spk_0 Ha!
spk_0 I...
spk_0 Yeah, I did work quite hard on it at the time
spk_0 To be honest, I still get very nervous doing them
spk_0 But I'm quite happy with how I produce the ambience still
spk_0 I think my only book bear with it is the way I...
spk_0 I don't know the spacing between my lines
spk_0 Kind of pops out at me a bit
spk_0 And also I can definitely tell
spk_0 I've not
spk_0 I've not
spk_0 Normalised the...
spk_0 Well, I'm not honest
spk_0 Sure, we've learned a lot about production since then
spk_0 Oh, big thanks and shout out to Marissa Ewing
spk_0 And Nico Vittess
spk_0 From Most Equil
spk_0 Who gave us a lot of advice and support when we were starting out
spk_0 So the spacing in this story
spk_0 Did you edit it at all?
spk_0 Or was that as red?
spk_0 It was edited
spk_0 Yeah, um...
spk_0 I have a lot of outtakes when I do it
spk_0 Most of the time in my production is just taking out the outtakes
spk_0 And then
spk_0 Spacing the different sections of audio correctly
spk_0 Um...
spk_0 And then I think with that one I did attempt to manually
spk_0 Normalise some of the spikes
spk_0 Go through and
spk_0 Deamplify them as it were
spk_0 Um...
spk_0 But yeah, that was...
spk_0 I think now I have more of a...
spk_0 More of a rhythm with it
spk_0 Now as I'm sort of coming into it
spk_0 Becoming more experienced
spk_0 I have a way of tracking the beats of it
spk_0 When I do it
spk_0 Absolutely
spk_0 Yeah, it was also an interesting story in terms of its
spk_0 LGBT representation
spk_0 What do you think about the LGBT representation in this story?
spk_0 It's the least
spk_0 Front and centre of all of our stories
spk_0 The LGBT representation in this
spk_0 Because um...
spk_0 As I understand the main character
spk_0 Trinity is non-binary
spk_0 But this is never actually mentioned in the story
spk_0 Not once
spk_0 Yeah, it's really interesting
spk_0 There's one bit where Trinity is at a sleepover trying to find
spk_0 Congratulations 38.ABI
spk_0 And they state that they were at a sleepover with girls
spk_0 Like
spk_0 Everyone else at the sleepover are girls
spk_0 And that's really interesting
spk_0 Uh, just that is not mentioned that they are non-binary
spk_0 But knowing they are non-binary
spk_0 We can get more of an idea about the character
spk_0 Um...
spk_0 Are they out?
spk_0 Do they...
spk_0 They sound quite young if they're at a sleepover
spk_0 Um, so maybe...
spk_0 Maybe they're them presenting
spk_0 I don't know
spk_0 I do think it's alluded to
spk_0 Very much alluded to in that line as you say though um...
spk_0 When they're going through and trying to find the video
spk_0 The reference, I um...
spk_0 None of the girls could get past um...
spk_0 Creeps out
spk_0 And then it was my turn
spk_0 And then...
spk_0 Yeah and as well then
spk_0 Trinity is not...
spk_0 Is not exactly a very mask sounding name
spk_0 Yeah
spk_0 And it's...
spk_0 It's one of the non-binary names I think
spk_0 We're the non-binary names
spk_0 Yeah, like um...
spk_0 When Elliot Page came out
spk_0 Everybody was thanking him for choosing one of
spk_0 The Names
spk_0 Carrying on the Transman tradition
spk_0 Yeah, I think uh...
spk_0 Trinity is one of the names for non-binary people
spk_0 Along with Sam Alfie, Aiden, etc
spk_0 Yeah and Kits, I know a lot of Kits
spk_0 Um...
spk_0 We know quite a bit about the author actually
spk_0 Um... some of the authors that we have coming up
spk_0 They are uh... there's very little information online about them
spk_0 So I'm wondering if I should explore the authors a bit more
spk_0 Because uh... we really want to highlight LGBT authors as well
spk_0 I don't know for sure which of these authors are LGBT themselves
spk_0 But for this author at least we do know
spk_0 Uh... they describe themselves as a lesbian horror writer from the fifth dimension
spk_0 And uh... they carry on on their Reddit page
spk_0 describe themselves
spk_0 Greetings inter- mention... sorry
spk_0 Greetings inter-dimensional travelers
spk_0 Um... my name is Bri and I am the mastermind
spk_0 Behind all of the stories on user fifth dimension freak
spk_0 I've been writing since I was seven
spk_0 And I've been writing horror since I was eight
spk_0 But never published it in brackets
spk_0 Because it was horrible
spk_0 I'm a cisgender white lesbian woman
spk_0 Uh... but I'm also pretty snazzy
spk_0 Anyway, this is my official subreddit
spk_0 You can find everything on here
spk_0 For my band stories, two narrations, two ads, two... anything in between
spk_0 Below you will find some information about the subreddit
spk_0 So go give it a look
spk_0 Going back to the episode uh... it's kind of a classic
spk_0 Creepypasta format
spk_0 Kind of the uh... the lost episode style
spk_0 You know like suicide mouse?
spk_0 I do not know
spk_0 Oh, it's like one of the first big creepypasters
spk_0 It's about this guy who finds um...
spk_0 This old uh... Disney reel
spk_0 Um... this old Disney reel from like the 1950s or 1940s
spk_0 And it had a Mickey Mouse episode on it
spk_0 Um... but as you watch it, it gets more and more light marriage, more horrific
spk_0 Um... this is an exactly um... a lost episode
spk_0 But it's similar in that it's a hidden video on Netflix
spk_0 So it's a bit like that
spk_0 Oh... and interesting creepypasta fact about this video
spk_0 It lasted about 45 minutes on YouTube before it got deleted
spk_0 Yeah, it got taken down pretty quickly
spk_0 I think we got a warning for that
spk_0 We did! We got our first strike
spk_0 Uh... so we wanted to put out three episodes straight away
spk_0 So there would be three episodes for people to listen to
spk_0 Then this one gets deleted straight away
spk_0 And YouTube gets all snarky with us
spk_0 About it going against its community standards
spk_0 We were really sorry for the author as well since we wanted to get the story out there
spk_0 Um... so I guess the podcast was still up
spk_0 So... anyway, we contested it with YouTube
spk_0 The strike
spk_0 We said, hey, there's nothing wrong with this video
spk_0 What are you doing?
spk_0 And YouTube wrote back to us and just said, nope, the strike will be upheld
spk_0 We've manually reviewed it
spk_0 And it definitely goes against our community standards
spk_0 But they wouldn't say why
spk_0 So we're like, okay, fuck you
spk_0 We'll upload it again and just remove any mention of Netflix
spk_0 In the title since that was the only thing we could think that would have... they would have a problem with
spk_0 So we uploaded the new video
spk_0 And the next morning the old video was reinstated
spk_0 They don't message us or anything about why it's just back up and our strikes are gone
spk_0 Um... I think it's all a conspiracy to stop us finding congratulations 38.AVR
spk_0 How was it you were supposed to find congratulations 38?
spk_0 As I recall, it was you started with Boss Baby Back in Business
spk_0 Hang on, I'm going to bring up Netflix now
spk_0 It might not work in all countries since we're different Netflix
spk_0 Yeah
spk_0 Okay
spk_0 Yep, here it is
spk_0 Boss Baby Back in Business
spk_0 I think you go through the recommended thing from that
spk_0 Um...
spk_0 Okay
spk_0 So the next one was creeped out
spk_0 Right
spk_0 Okay
spk_0 Yeah, there's creeped out where it's in Boss Baby Back in Business
spk_0 Then Black Mirror
spk_0 Okay
spk_0 Black Mirror
spk_0 And
spk_0 Huh
spk_0 What's this
spk_0 Oh God
spk_0 Oh God
spk_0 Oh God, no
spk_0 Oh no
spk_0 Wow
spk_0 Okay
spk_0 Okay, nope, nope, nope, nope, nope, nope, nope, nope, nope, nope, nope, nope
spk_0
spk_0 Moving on
spk_0 So queer
spk_0 Queer, yeah, by Plonium Poisonite
spk_0 I believe it was, yeah
spk_0 Here's mistake
spk_0 Was trying to do it in my house
spk_0 In my domain
spk_0 My significant other
spk_0 Who was hidden behind the door
spk_0 Quickly disarmed Dennis and trapped him inside
spk_0 I easily parried all of his closed range attacks with my hand
spk_0 Surprising him with my physical strength
spk_0 I'm done with you Dennis
spk_0 You're crazy
spk_0 And evil
spk_0 And a danger to others
spk_0 And yourself
spk_0 I'm turning you into something useful
spk_0 Yeah, queer by Plonium Poisonite
spk_0 We were really happy to narrate queer because
spk_0 Yeah, Plonium Poisonite
spk_0 They're a pretty big creepy passive author
spk_0 Their stories often get thousands of other boats
spk_0 And they have this rule that they don't allow narration for free for stories
spk_0 With over 700 other boats
spk_0 Queer
spk_0 When we found it
spk_0 It had 1,800 at the time
spk_0 So, yeah
spk_0 We're message Plonium Poisonite and we explained that we're
spk_0 To queer people who would like to narrate it
spk_0 And they very generously allowed us to
spk_0 So that was one of my narrations
spk_0 What did you think of it?
spk_0 I think this was my personal favourite
spk_0 Really?
spk_0 Absolutely
spk_0 And also, it stands out as this is the first narration that we released
spk_0 That has the queer aspects of the character
spk_0 The centre focus in the story
spk_0 Yeah
spk_0 Whilst before, up until this point
spk_0 Everything's kind of background
spk_0 Which is totally fine
spk_0 I think we're pretty happy with any sort of
spk_0 LGBT-Q representation
spk_0 As long as it's not problematic
spk_0 But that was really cool
spk_0 It was really cool
spk_0 And it raises a good question
spk_0 Like
spk_0 What is the best form of LGBT representation?
spk_0 Like, if we go back to
spk_0 Congratulations, 38
spk_0 The fact that the person's
spk_0 Non-binary identity isn't mentioned in the story
spk_0 Is that perhaps one of the best forms of representation?
spk_0 I mean, it's still invisible if you don't mention it
spk_0 But it's a story that includes
spk_0 LGBTQ people
spk_0 But it's not a story about their queerness
spk_0 Whereas with this, it is
spk_0 Yeah
spk_0 It's in your face
spk_0 And their queerness is kind of
spk_0 Manifested, in dark and monstrous ways as well
spk_0 You got to say one thing that hit a bit close to home is
spk_0 The character of Dennis
spk_0 Dennis
spk_0 We all know Dennis, don't we?
spk_0 We do all know Dennis
spk_0 So it makes it all the more cathartic what happens to him at the end
spk_0 Yeah, absolutely
spk_0 Like when I first came out
spk_0 I was working for a chain of pet shops
spk_0 As the personal assistant to the proprietor
spk_0 And the manager of the building
spk_0 He was on my boss
spk_0 I was just working for the proprietor
spk_0 But the manager of the building he was a very vocal national front supporter
spk_0 And for anyone outside of the UK
spk_0 The national front is kind of like our Ku Klux Klan
spk_0 They're an extremist far-right group
spk_0 And basically hate anyone who is in a straight white cis guy
spk_0 I had ponds with him for years
spk_0 And of course I came out as trans
spk_0 And yeah, I went about as
spk_0 Well, as you'd expect
spk_0 He refused to use my new name or my new pronouns
spk_0 But you know, he was also telling other people in the building not to
spk_0 And my boss was telling me
spk_0 Oh, he's just saying those things
spk_0 Because you are the way you are
spk_0 So basically blaming me
spk_0 Like if you weren't trans, he wouldn't be acting so shit to you
spk_0 And even when I legally changed my name
spk_0 He still didn't change his behaviour
spk_0 So I just walked out in the end
spk_0 So yeah, that was my Dennis
spk_0 Did you have a Dennis?
spk_0 I just wanted to say actually
spk_0 That what you said about how they reacted to it
spk_0 Does Mira the story quite well?
spk_0 Because they go to the police
spk_0 And they say, well maybe you should just stop being and dodging this kid
spk_0 Yeah, exactly
spk_0 I don't have a workplace Dennis
spk_0 I have had some similar instances when I was at college
spk_0 At times when I first started
spk_0 Experimenting with them presenting female
spk_0 And yeah, I remember getting into some
spk_0 Altifications with some less understanding students
spk_0 And also being taken to a meeting
spk_0 And reprimanded as until I was
spk_0 Distracting all the boys
spk_0 And another teacher at one point told me
spk_0 I should maybe try acting less gay
spk_0 Oh wow
spk_0 Okay
spk_0 Yeah, it's not good
spk_0 And I love the reveal in the story
spk_0 It's
spk_0 Yeah, the character
spk_0 Does seem to be queer
spk_0 As in an LGBTQ queer
spk_0 But it also has this double meaning
spk_0 That there's this beautiful body positive monster
spk_0 That I absolutely love
spk_0 I love the bit where Dennis
spk_0 Just finally makes his move against him
spk_0 And they reveal the horns on their back
spk_0 And their beautiful nipples
spk_0 Swirling
spk_0 With swirling galaxies
spk_0 I adore that
spk_0 Triangular eyes and things
spk_0 Yeah
spk_0 And this again like we sort of
spk_0 Talked about with skeletal grin
spk_0 This alludes to
spk_0 There's a much larger universe
spk_0 Outside the story is the feel that I get
spk_0 There is information
spk_0 Illuded to that we don't know
spk_0 Where does this person come from?
spk_0 Like what's the significance of the dagger?
spk_0 It sounds like a traditional thing
spk_0 Like in
spk_0 The culture of
spk_0 What these creatures are?
spk_0 Yeah
spk_0 It sounds like the entire family
spk_0 Is the way that they are
spk_0 And there's this really cool
spk_0 foreshadowing that they do as well
spk_0 They say that
spk_0 You know when certain features
spk_0 Started to develop
spk_0 They need to hide them
spk_0 And of course as trans people
spk_0 We interpret that as
spk_0 Like things like breasts or facial hair
spk_0 And no what it sounds like
spk_0 Once we had the reveal
spk_0 And we go back and listen to it again
spk_0 It sounds like the
spk_0 Certain features
spk_0 Things like the horns
spk_0 Growing from the back and
spk_0 And those kind of things
spk_0 Those aspects of themselves
spk_0 The actual monster rather than
spk_0 The actual monster rather than hiding their quenus
spk_0 Because it sounds like they're actually
spk_0 Very open about their quenus
spk_0 I definitely got the impression
spk_0 That the character's quenus was
spk_0 Completely separate from
spk_0 Their physical nature
spk_0 Yeah, I mean
spk_0 They're queer in the LGBTQ sense
spk_0 But they're also queer in the weird
spk_0 Odd monster
spk_0 Yeah, physically as being
spk_0 This, uh, look crafty and horror
spk_0 Do you have a head cannon about that?
spk_0 Because I kind of
spk_0 I got the impression that they were an alien
spk_0 I didn't imagine them as an alien
spk_0 I thought it was a
spk_0 Teaman
spk_0 I don't know
spk_0 I guess like in skeletal grin
spk_0 There's no real explanation
spk_0 And in this there's no real explanation
spk_0 For why they have a dagger
spk_0 That passed down the generation
spk_0 Second just cut people in half
spk_0 And they fall into two of the same people
spk_0 It's, um, yeah, it's curious
spk_0 One thing that sort of
spk_0 Leads into is just
spk_0 Thing that I quite appreciate in horror in general
spk_0 Which is
spk_0 Not giving all of the information
spk_0 And letting some of your imagination
spk_0 And your own interpretation do the work
spk_0 Yeah, um, and I think that's probably
spk_0 Something that's quite, um, important
spk_0 And creepypastors
spk_0 Given the quite short farmer
spk_0 Yeah, yeah, totally agree
spk_0 Um, well, is it the same in any form of horror
spk_0 Especially chew in horror movies
spk_0 They just show too much
spk_0 The producers have too much power
spk_0 With CGI these days
spk_0 And they want to show you
spk_0 All of these horrors
spk_0 Um, there's a movie
spk_0 Outlast year called
spk_0 Oh, well, what was it
spk_0 Oh, Underwater
spk_0 I should have known because the whole movie's underwater
spk_0 Anyway, um, they just showed up
spk_0 Show Kuthulu at the end
spk_0 Yeah, and
spk_0 I think this is part of what made
spk_0 La Crafty and Horror itself
spk_0 Specifically quite special is that
spk_0 It's all intangible
spk_0 Not understandable, it's ineffable
spk_0 Yeah, um, the way La Craft writes
spk_0 It's usually a guy who
spk_0 Um, just can't describe what he's seeing
spk_0 Uh, what he's witnessing
spk_0 Like, I just saw something, it's too horrendous for you to understand
spk_0 I glimpsed a
spk_0 I glimpsed it slightly
spk_0 Once and now I've gone completely insane
spk_0 Yes
spk_0 Like in, um, usual writing roles
spk_0 They say
spk_0 Show don't tell
spk_0 Maybe, maybe a horror
spk_0 Should be showing less
spk_0 Yeah, I mean, I feel like
spk_0 This is reflected in games as well
spk_0 Like, if you take something like
spk_0 Dead Space, for example
spk_0 Um, a lot of attention is diffused
spk_0 When you see
spk_0 A shambling gory mess
spk_0 Like, a construct itself
spk_0 Into a, um, an alien horror for the millions of time
spk_0 Whilst
spk_0 I find that indie games
spk_0 Indie horror games
spk_0 Tends to leave a lot more to the imagination
spk_0 Leave everything to
spk_0 Atmosphere, and tension
spk_0 Which gets to me
spk_0 So many times more
spk_0 Yeah, like Silent Hill
spk_0 Where they added all this volumetric fog
spk_0 Just because the PlayStation couldn't handle the draw distance
spk_0 Um, but it made the game so much scarier
spk_0 Because you couldn't see what was in the fog
spk_0 Or, um, or amnesia maybe
spk_0 Where you're in the dark and you're hiding
spk_0 I was absolutely thinking of amnesia
spk_0 When I said what I last said
spk_0 Oh yeah? So yeah, good, good shout
spk_0 And I think the takeaway from that
spk_0 Is if you want to make good horror
spk_0 Do less
spk_0 Cook corners, be lazy
spk_0 Yeah
spk_0 Let the readers do the work
spk_0 So the next one we have is one of
spk_0 Your animations which I think
spk_0 Might be my personal favorite
spk_0 Out of all the animations we've done
spk_0 But of course it was done by the better
spk_0 After two quibi pasta narrators
spk_0 So yeah, one of your stories, uh, how about you introduce it?
spk_0 So am I in the wrong post
spk_0 Dunning up to my mum?
spk_0 By Captain Refioli
spk_0 Captain Refioli, absolutely right
spk_0 Mum, he's my boyfriend
spk_0 His parents kicked him out yesterday
spk_0 One of her eyes looked at me
spk_0 Her expression softening slightly
spk_0 So, this is the boy
spk_0 Her grip on his neck loosened slightly
spk_0 As she looked him up and down with her other eyes
spk_0 Jeremy, what the fuck?
spk_0 He shouted, tears spilling from his eyes
spk_0 My mum focused on him again
spk_0 Turning back to the room
spk_0 All five of her eyes on him
spk_0 Language young man
spk_0 She unhinged her jar and swallowed his foot
spk_0 Making a loud crunching noise
spk_0 He turned pale as a sheet and screamed even louder
spk_0 Mum
spk_0 I very much enjoyed doing this one
spk_0 This is a very fun one to narrate
spk_0 And we actually, um, we did this in the same room
spk_0 We did? Yeah
spk_0 Yeah, this is the first one
spk_0 And the only one that I've made that includes voice lines from both of us
spk_0 Yeah, it was very fun
spk_0 The characters were very expressive
spk_0 There was a great amount of foreshadowing in it
spk_0 And yeah, it was just a lot of fun
spk_0 Hi, it was so good
spk_0 I was saying earlier about my kind of humour
spk_0 This plays into it so well
spk_0 It's a very dark story
spk_0 But it's just this thing that
spk_0 When he talks about um
spk_0 The weirdness
spk_0 Well, we'll go into that
spk_0 Just like, hm
spk_0 That was weird
spk_0 And it all culminates into this horror at the end
spk_0 Like, what was the final line?
spk_0 So yeah, my mum tried to eat my boyfriend
spk_0 And I cleaved her to death
spk_0 Am I in the wrong for this
spk_0 It was very much echoing that
spk_0 Uh, mirroring the uh, kind of
spk_0 Am I the asshole subreddit
spk_0 It's kind of the thing
spk_0 Yeah, I was totally thinking that
spk_0 I would love to see that story in Am I the asshole
spk_0 Like, yeah
spk_0 My mum tried to eat my boyfriend
spk_0 So I cleaved her to death
spk_0 Am I the asshole
spk_0 It was interesting producing this as well
spk_0 Like, in terms of
spk_0 I went a little heavier on the sound effects of this one
spk_0 Um
spk_0 Trying to
spk_0 Figure out what to act sound effects too
spk_0 And what not too
spk_0 Um, I quite enjoyed doing this sound of
spk_0 Blaine's leg being bit of a philomother
spk_0 The crunch
spk_0 The crunch
spk_0 Yes, it's very crunchy
spk_0 And the inspiration I took from that was
spk_0 When I was looking for the sound effect files
spk_0 I was looking specifically for the sound of a tree branch
spk_0 Snapping or crunching
spk_0 And the reason for that is
spk_0 I broke my arm quite badly when I was younger
spk_0 And that was
spk_0 I thought what had happened was I had landed
spk_0 I had fallen and landed on a tree branch
spk_0 And broken it
spk_0 And I realized it wasn't a tree branch
spk_0 It was my arm
spk_0 Are you okay?
spk_0 Did I want to say that?
spk_0 I broke my leg
spk_0 Um, when I was young
spk_0 I can't remember the crunch though
spk_0 I was uh, I was on the monkey bars
spk_0 And some twat was pushing me from behind
spk_0 So I was swinging like a, like a pendulum
spk_0 And I ended up losing my grip
spk_0 And my foot went into the ground
spk_0 The ground was kind of soft so, like my foot wedged in
spk_0 And then the next thing I knew
spk_0 I had two ankles on the same leg
spk_0 Oh, no!
spk_0 I don't remember the crack at all
spk_0 It, it, it, it, I must have lended out
spk_0 But the crunch
spk_0 In this narration
spk_0 Even though I did that, I still cringe when I hear it.
spk_0 There are other instances where I feel like I could have added sound effects because they
spk_0 are songs that are described in the story.
spk_0 But at the same time, the mother making a slurping noise, kind of...
spk_0 I decided not to add that into maintaining the ambience, but whenever I'm listening to
spk_0 it for any reason, whenever it describes that I can't help, but IRL just go...
spk_0 Yes, become a personal meme.
spk_0 But you did sort of mention earlier how things are mentioned in the story, and then it all
spk_0 makes sense when you encounter the mother.
spk_0 Like, things that come to mind are when Jeremy is describing what happens when he breaks
spk_0 the rules, and she goes absolutely mental and screams at everything.
spk_0 But then she calms down, wipes the tears from his cheeks and then slimes from his face.
spk_0 The slimes.
spk_0 Oh, and they're having dinner, and he's eating chicken wings and she's slurping down
spk_0 the left over buns.
spk_0 Yeah, when he describes it, it seems so normal to the character.
spk_0 Like, you know, like one of her eyes looked at me, and I'm like...
spk_0 One of her eyes?
spk_0 Eyes aren't supposed to do that.
spk_0 Thinking it'd go back to that little crafty and horror beat of not explaining it and letting
spk_0 your imagination do the work.
spk_0 And of course, I think your imagination is somewhat subverted in this.
spk_0 I think it also does raise quite a few other questions as well.
spk_0 Like, what happened to Jeremy's debt?
spk_0 Because it's implied that he was around.
spk_0 They still have his dad's old car, and that's what he uses to take blame to the hospital
spk_0 in the end.
spk_0 That's true.
spk_0 But I found myself wondering about that.
spk_0 Yeah, they mentioned there is a father, but he isn't in the story, so yeah, don't know
spk_0 what happened to him.
spk_0 One thing that I did notice as well is the mother, despite being a literal monster.
spk_0 Not homophobic in the slightest.
spk_0 She seems quite happy room to be seeing another boy.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 Oh, wholesome monster mom.
spk_0 I'm such he's dead.
spk_0 F in the chat.
spk_0 Maybe homophobes are the real monsters.
spk_0 The real monsters were the homophobes we met along the way.
spk_0 The production and narration were really good.
spk_0 Like, when you were shouting, it sounded like you were shouting,
spk_0 but it wasn't peeking the microphone.
spk_0 How did you do that?
spk_0 It must be some kind of witchcraft.
spk_0 Well, at the time, I remember I did do a few takes of it because I did the first attempt
spk_0 at shouting did peek the microphone quite heavily.
spk_0 But I don't know.
spk_0 What I did was I didn't project it as much and sort of directed it sort of across the
spk_0 room to get more of a tone of trying to be heard, I guess, rather than just going for
spk_0 outright loudness.
spk_0 And then also in the production I did, tone them down quite a bit and try and equalize
spk_0 them because I don't know about everyone else, but I quite enjoy sleeping to creepy pastas.
spk_0 And I don't want somebody shouting in my ear.
spk_0 So yeah.
spk_0 Yeah, I sleep to creepy pastas as well.
spk_0 In fact, when we started, we wanted to know, you know, do these narrations past sleep test.
spk_0 One of the best compliments I've gotten about my narrations is this made me want to go
spk_0 to sleep, which is kind of paradoxical in a way.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 I don't know.
spk_0 Anyone else sleep to creepy pastas?
spk_0 Any of our listeners?
spk_0 Let us know in the comments.
spk_0 I suspect it's because we're all depressed and unbelievable.
spk_0 Yeah, we long for the nightmares.
spk_0 They're an escape from the nightmares of reality.
spk_0 And I think that brings us quite smoothly into the next one, mentally, out of the way.
spk_0 Oh, God.
spk_0 Eurasia by Max Lobdale.
spk_0 More flickering.
spk_0 But it couldn't have been my vision.
spk_0 The rest of the room was clear.
spk_0 Too clear.
spk_0 Early, Maya flickered.
spk_0 In and out.
spk_0 Faster and faster, she got closer to the door, I held for her.
spk_0 More muttering filled the class.
spk_0 Except this time, I was confusion.
spk_0 Oxly Marine beamed as she watched Maya walk away.
spk_0 Maya, what's happening?
spk_0 I went put as she flashed and flickered in my vision.
spk_0 Ah, it's an incredibly powerful story.
spk_0 Eurasia, it's a story about a friend of a trans woman who's at university with a really,
spk_0 I think problematic is too kind of a word.
spk_0 She would be a turf.
spk_0 A turf lecturer called Laura Oxley-Varine.
spk_0 Anyone doesn't know what a turf is.
spk_0 It stands for Trans-Exclusionary Medical Feminist.
spk_0 But they are not feminists.
spk_0 They are just using feminism to try and justify their own bigotry.
spk_0 And that's who Oxley-Varine is.
spk_0 Yeah, I mean, this kind of stuff is so bad in the UK at the moment.
spk_0 I mean, before we get into that, what did you think?
spk_0 Oh, it's a good story.
spk_0 I think it's really well written and very well narrated and produced as, of course, it
spk_0 is narrated and produced by our best narrator.
spk_0 However, as a trans woman myself, it is very difficult to listen to.
spk_0 It very much does hit home quite hard.
spk_0 And Oxley-Varine is a tenured professor.
spk_0 She is practically untouchable.
spk_0 When they do bring the complaints to whoever, the assurances they give them are so lame.
spk_0 So they're like, oh, well, we've brought up this complaint and we've been assured that
spk_0 no problematic language we used again, which, of course, it is.
spk_0 And yeah, it's all too real.
spk_0 And it sounds like a big problem in the UK than it is in the US.
spk_0 At least my friends in the USA say that the way that trans people are represented in the
spk_0 media, there seems to be a different flavor of transphobia in the UK than there is in
spk_0 the USA.
spk_0 It seems in the USA it is mostly religious people who object to trans people existing.
spk_0 But in the UK, it's being led by mostly women claiming to be standing up for feminism
spk_0 and it's all bullshit.
spk_0 And it's really annoying.
spk_0 And it's universal in the media over here that a trans person's voice needs to be balanced
spk_0 with that of a bigot.
spk_0 In fact, it's BBC policy that if they have any article about trans issues, it needs to
spk_0 be balanced with that of a bigot.
spk_0 It's BBC policy that if they have any article about trans issues, they would have a trans
spk_0 person or a trans representative organization speaking.
spk_0 But they would also have to have one of the transphobic hate groups as well because they
spk_0 think it's balanced.
spk_0 That basically means trans people existing as a matter of opinion.
spk_0 And this is all just a difference of opinion, but it's not just a difference of opinion
spk_0 and it's driving us mad.
spk_0 And it's driving really bad legislation, both here in the US as well.
spk_0 Well, everywhere in the world.
spk_0 So yeah, in the UK we might see change in the future, but not the way the government
spk_0 currently is.
spk_0 But off-com, the watchdog of media services in the UK has called out the BBC for this
spk_0 policy, saying, for example, that they wouldn't have someone from the National Frontal
spk_0 Codeclogs Plan on to balance abuse of a Black Lives Matter speaker.
spk_0 It's a ridiculous comparison, you know, that we've got to create this balance.
spk_0 And this is represented by Oxley-Varine in the story, a high profile feminist, she's
spk_0 respected, including her views about trans people and it's being taught in schools.
spk_0 So yeah, I mean, all of this is really well written in the story.
spk_0 Yeah, Max Lodell obviously has a very good understanding of transphobia and how it affects
spk_0 people.
spk_0 So yeah, sorry, I've been on a bit of a rant here, but this is a subject close to my heart
spk_0 and I've been to a lot of events with being led by people like Oxley-Varine.
spk_0 I can enjoy the alternative acronym, the feminism appropriating radical transphobia,
spk_0 off-part.
spk_0 Yeah, that's more like it.
spk_0 I have a couple of questions about your production of that actually.
spk_0 So one thing that my ear was quite drawn to was when Oxley-Varine is speaking, she sounds
spk_0 like she's talking possibly Mike's in a lecture hall and that was really good.
spk_0 I have no idea how you did that.
spk_0 It's really subtle for all of Oxley-Varine's lines.
spk_0 I dropped the volume slightly and added just a touch of reverb to it as well.
spk_0 So it sounds like it's in a big open space.
spk_0 Yeah, it's pretty subtle.
spk_0 There's very few sound effects in it actually.
spk_0 There's the sound of the door slam.
spk_0 Also when my ear is flickering in and out, there's a very quiet static that fades in to
spk_0 the background as it happens and it slowly gets louder and louder.
spk_0 Then as my ear fades away, it starts to fade out and afterwards you notice the silence
spk_0 even more because that static isn't there.
spk_0 As the white noise just fades away to nothing.
spk_0 Such a great ending.
spk_0 Yeah, very, very subtle.
spk_0 Actually, I was thinking about that flickering sound.
spk_0 It gives me initial impressions of a candle.
spk_0 But when I was trying to deconstruct how you might have made it, I was thinking, is this
spk_0 like a record player going without a record in it?
spk_0 Yeah, it's a record player at the end of the record.
spk_0 Oh, that's really clever.
spk_0 Well, limited on the sound effects we have access to, we're doing all of this on
spk_0 no budget.
spk_0 So imagine what we could do if we had better equipment and access to a proper sound effects
spk_0 library.
spk_0 I mean, how do you even record the flickering of a candle flame?
spk_0 So I had to think of some analog for that.
spk_0 So I used a record.
spk_0 I was going to use like TV static but wanted something a little bit more subtle since they
spk_0 weren't sure what they were seeing when my ear was flickering.
spk_0 Or if they had even seen it.
spk_0 It's such a sad ending though.
spk_0 And well done to my Swaddele.
spk_0 He clearly has a really good understanding of institutional transfer.
spk_0 Just want to say as well, well done Tasha because I don't think I could have the right
spk_0 of that.
spk_0 Well, we did fight over it originally because we didn't have any stories to narrate.
spk_0 We narrate all stories with permission from the authors.
spk_0 So I went out to try and find good stories and Eurasian queer were the first stories we
spk_0 found that we got permission to use.
spk_0 So I called Dips on them.
spk_0 Anyway, I think this leads us on to our last story narrated by the best of the Quippie
spk_0 Pastinariators Rosalind Savile.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 So I was just a child when someone stole my reflection by Mandag.
spk_0 I think I'm pronouncing that right.
spk_0 I'm trying to pronounce it like the antagonist from Dexter's laboratory.
spk_0 I picked up a paperweight off the desk in the room and hurled it at the mirror, which
spk_0 shattered into a thousand little pieces, cluttering the floor and blindingly reflecting light
spk_0 off the ceiling.
spk_0 Then he spoke again, but now there were thousands of them, malicious screams that emerged out
spk_0 of the innumerable shards on the floor, all building up to an air shattering crescendo.
spk_0 You think this will stop me?
spk_0 It won'ts.
spk_0 You'll never get rid of me.
spk_0 Never.
spk_0 This is who you are.
spk_0 Look at me.
spk_0 Yeah, this was another story that I feel hit close to home for trans people.
spk_0 A bit lighter in tone than Arraja, I'd say.
spk_0 Yeah, I loved it.
spk_0 I loved that we finished with the...
spk_0 Well, we finished the pilot series with this episode as well because it's a happy ending.
spk_0 And it's really uplifting after Arraja.
spk_0 I had a little happy cry at the end.
spk_0 I cried at it as well.
spk_0 I don't know if that's a little bit self-congratulatory considering I did this narration, but it's
spk_0 the ending of the story itself really does hit me.
spk_0 In fact, I'm not ashamed to say that at the end when everybody is sounding quite emotional
spk_0 and overwhelmed and everything.
spk_0 There is quite a lot of my own real emotion in that.
spk_0 Yeah, you can hear it.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 And also throughout the distress of having this incongruence with your reflection, I
spk_0 felt that.
spk_0 Yeah, I understand that.
spk_0 I didn't have that experience of looking in the mirror and not seeing who you are, but
spk_0 it is a good metaphor for the feeling that you're turning into somebody who you're not
spk_0 supposed to be.
spk_0 In fact, I drew a lot of parallels while I was taking notes.
spk_0 And I have an interesting web of connections going on on my conspiracy board.
spk_0 So the main theme of I was just a child when someone stole my reflection is this child
spk_0 who gets scared to look in the mirror because the reflection isn't them.
spk_0 Instead there's this monstrous thing and I was listening to the spinsters of horror
spk_0 podcast, I spoke on your podcast.
spk_0 That's what it's called.
spk_0 I'm not spinning on their podcast.
spk_0 Yeah, check them out.
spk_0 And they did a great episode recently on Nightmare on Elm Street 3 and 4, which is why
spk_0 I wanted to watch Elm Street 3 and 4 this week.
spk_0 We managed to watch Elm Street 3, but we didn't get 4.
spk_0 And the interesting about 4 is there's a character called Alice who she doesn't like looking
spk_0 at her reflection.
spk_0 So she colours the mirror in a room with pictures of her friends and family.
spk_0 So she can't see a reflection.
spk_0 But by the end of the movie, she takes down all the pictures that are covering her mirror
spk_0 and she looks straight at her reflection.
spk_0 And it's become this, this empowering thing being able to look at herself and see how
spk_0 strong that she's become and she just says fucking a.
spk_0 So yeah, that's one connection to this story.
spk_0 But also in the remake of Nightmare on Elm Street, the actor who plays Freddie was Jackie
spk_0 Earl Haley.
spk_0 Jackie Earl Haley is perhaps better known as Rochak for much men.
spk_0 The reason why I bring this up is because I love the voice acting you did for the
spk_0 monster in the monster in the mirror.
spk_0 But it so reminds me of Rochak.
spk_0 Give me back my face.
spk_0 I've got a lot to hear with you.
spk_0 You're a lot to hear with me.
spk_0 Exactly, yeah.
spk_0 And there's another connection there.
spk_0 Give me back my face.
spk_0 You know, Rochak doesn't want to see his own face either.
spk_0 So there's this weird common theme going on for people listening.
spk_0 I have my conspiracy board out at the center of it is a photo of Jackie Earl Haley and
spk_0 there are strings going out in all directions and Rosalynn is giving me funny looks.
spk_0 This is all connected somehow.
spk_0 I don't know how, but Jackie Earl Haley is at the center of it.
spk_0 I have to say, doing that voice absolutely wrecked my throat.
spk_0 It was so good.
spk_0 I think the first segment I recorded for that was actually the line where the mirror
spk_0 has been shattered and it's described as the voice cumulates with itself into an ear
spk_0 shattering crescendo.
spk_0 And the way I produced that bit was I recorded the line and then I layered it on itself several
spk_0 times.
spk_0 And then each bit I just put slightly out of sync each way.
spk_0 So I create the sound, create the effects that one voice is speaking multiple times.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 I really love the music in this one as well.
spk_0 Oh yeah.
spk_0 So I wanted to do something a little bit different to I stood up to my mom.
spk_0 This time I didn't actually use sound effects for most part other than that one I generated
spk_0 for the shattered reflection.
spk_0 Instead what I did was I took a, I don't know, to describe it like a sort of tinkling
spk_0 sounding piano track and it starts off.
spk_0 It's basically a loop track that continues to loop but I edited it so that after each
spk_0 section as the story progresses and Cynthia becomes more discombobulated that it gets
spk_0 tone shifted down a notch.
spk_0 And yeah I kind of felt like that I tried to mirror that with that, put not intended.
spk_0 And then I tried from that to transition it to another piano track but this time much
spk_0 more upbeat.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 The tone completely changes.
spk_0 You can really feel it.
spk_0 It isn't just the music.
spk_0 It's the tone of the narration as well.
spk_0 You can hear the fear and the apprehension are gone.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 There's sort of a, I tried to sound not just emotional but also a bit fragile because she's
spk_0 been through quite a lot of until this point and there's a big moment for her and I mean
spk_0 I can put myself in those shoes, 100%.
spk_0 Okay.
spk_0 Here we go.
spk_0 Kind of thing.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 And that's the only point in which I use proper sound effects as well because during
spk_0 that last section you hear the birds singing and again I wanted to convey that Cynthia has
spk_0 been getting more and more desensitized and the discombobulated with her whole reflection
spk_0 and everything and I mean it can gender dysphoria presenting in that way can have quite a
spk_0 disassociative effect and I wanted to sort of bring that in so you don't really hear
spk_0 any sound effects and then when the monstrous reflection is gone suddenly it's like she's
spk_0 more, you feel more real.
spk_0
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 So yeah, great performance and great story by Mandark.
spk_0 I tried to find more information about Mandark and they have a popular series out on Reddit
spk_0 at the moment called I think it's I'm a sex worker and sometimes we just need a safe space.
spk_0 The only other thing I know is that they apparently like being known as the sex worker guy.
spk_0 So those are the six episodes that we had for the pilot series and you might be wondering
spk_0 now what's going to happen.
spk_0 Well, we are having a short break but we'll be back in February when we launch our kickstarter
spk_0 which will really help us out.
spk_0 We've done the best we can with the equipment that we have.
spk_0 We can do so much better if we even had a good quality microphone.
spk_0 There's other equipment that could help us out as well not to mention access to a big sound
spk_0 effects library. Basically we need resources so we can bring you weekly episodes of Quippy
spk_0 Pastor because we have tons more stories to narrate. So watch this space.
spk_0 Follow us on social media. We are on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram.
