spk_0 This is a guest essay by Guy Goldstein,
spk_0 a third-generation Holocaust survivor,
spk_0 and Daniel Greenfield,
spk_0 a Shillman Journalism Fellow
spk_0 at the David Horowitz Freedom Center.
spk_0 The fear spreading through New York City's Jewish community
spk_0 is primal.
spk_0 A Muslim socialist has been elected to lead the city
spk_0 that wants to find Jewish safety in the diaspora.
spk_0 For weeks, Jewish circles have whispered
spk_0 the same question, what happens now?
spk_0 People expect confrontation.
spk_0 They imagine boycotts, public purges,
spk_0 and a mayor who will finally say aloud
spk_0 what the activist left has only hinted at for years.
spk_0 They brace for a sudden collapse, a visible enemy,
spk_0 a breaking of taboos,
spk_0 but that is not what is coming.
spk_0 What is coming will not feel like an attack.
spk_0 It will feel like a slow, suffocating embrace.
spk_0 Zoran Mamdani does not need to persecute Jews
spk_0 to reshape their place in New York City.
spk_0 He needs only to disarm them.
spk_0 He will do it with inclusion, civility, and charm.
spk_0 After the hysteria that follows his election,
spk_0 even the smallest gesture of goodwill
spk_0 will look like salvation,
spk_0 a polite phone call to a rabbi,
spk_0 a visit to a Holocaust memorial,
spk_0 a social media post condemning anti-Semitism.
spk_0 The city will sigh with relief,
spk_0 it will believe it has been spared.
spk_0 And in that calm, the real project will begin.
spk_0 Mamdani comes from the activist world
spk_0 where moral framing is the real battlefield.
spk_0 He knows that victory is not about destroying your opponents
spk_0 but about redefining them.
spk_0 His first term will not be about confrontation.
spk_0 It will be about legitimacy.
spk_0 He will present himself as the mayor of inclusion,
spk_0 a man of empathy and bridge building.
spk_0 He will launch task forces and round tables
spk_0 on hate and diversity that read like an ideal civic mosaic.
spk_0 The anti-deformation league
spk_0 and American Jewish committee will be invited,
spk_0 praised, and seated beside J Street,
spk_0 a leftist Jewish lobbying organization.
spk_0 The council on American Islamic relations,
spk_0 so-called progressive rabbis,
spk_0 student activists, and interfaith coalitions.
spk_0 It will look like partnership.
spk_0 In practice, it will be a demotion.
spk_0 As conversations shift from anti-Semitism
spk_0 to all forms of hate,
spk_0 Jewish vulnerability will be diluted
spk_0 into a universal moral vocabulary
spk_0 that no longer recognizes its uniqueness.
spk_0 When Jewish organizations object,
spk_0 they will be cast as parochial,
spk_0 unable to evolve with the city's quote-unquote,
spk_0 progressive conscience.
spk_0 And once the language of exclusivity
spk_0 is replaced with the language of equality,
spk_0 the Jews will have lost their agency
spk_0 to define their own oppression.
spk_0 This strategy is not new.
spk_0 The National Anti-Semitism Task Force
spk_0 for U.S. President Joe Biden's administration
spk_0 already perfected it.
spk_0 The Anti-Defamation League
spk_0 and other Jewish institutions
spk_0 were invited to participate,
spk_0 but surrounded by organizations
spk_0 that reject Jewish definitions of anti-Semitism.
spk_0 It was sold as diversity,
spk_0 but it worked as dilution.
spk_0 The warnings about anti-Semitism
spk_0 cloaked in anti-Zionism
spk_0 were absorbed into broad discussions
spk_0 of systemic hate.
spk_0 Mamdanny will replicate that model in New York City
spk_0 and call it justice.
spk_0 He will also cultivate his own court of good Jews,
spk_0 young, articulate activists
spk_0 who reject the link between Jewish identity
spk_0 and the Jewish state
spk_0 will be elevated as symbols of modernity and virtue.
spk_0 They will appear beside him at events,
spk_0 in task forces, in photo ops.
spk_0 They will insist that Jewish safety
spk_0 does not depend on Israel,
spk_0 that Zionism is not essential to Jewish identity.
spk_0 They will help Mamdanny frame himself
spk_0 as a friend of the Jews
spk_0 while dismantling the moral foundations
spk_0 that have sustained them.
spk_0 This pattern is not new either.
spk_0 Every generation of anti-Jewish power
spk_0 has found its Jewish enablers.
spk_0 The Zars had their courteers.
spk_0 The Soviets there have sexia.
spk_0 The West, its intersectional activists.
spk_0 They are always convinced
spk_0 they are saving Judaism from itself.
spk_0 Mamdanny will not silence Jews.
spk_0 He will deputize them.
spk_0 Mamdanny's policies
spk_0 will follow the same gentle pattern.
spk_0 Sister city ties with Israel
spk_0 will not be severed,
spk_0 but reviewed for balance.
spk_0 Educational programs
spk_0 will not denounce Zionism,
spk_0 but broad and narratives.
spk_0 Municipal grants will flow to NGOs
spk_0 that speak of peace
spk_0 while teaching that Jewish nationhood is oppression.
spk_0 Every decision will sound fair.
spk_0 Each step will seem moral
spk_0 and together they will replace
spk_0 post-war Jewish security
spk_0 with post-colonial guilt.
spk_0 The true danger is not that Mamdanny will rage.
spk_0 It is that he will remain calm.
spk_0 He is young, emotional, and ambitious.
spk_0 But if he resists the temptation
spk_0 to flaunt his disdain,
spk_0 if he chooses patience over pride,
spk_0 he will achieve something unprecedented.
spk_0 He will show the world how to isolate Jews
spk_0 without ever appearing to harm them.
spk_0 New York City is not a local stage.
spk_0 It is the capital of the post-war world order,
spk_0 the seat of the United Nations,
spk_0 the epicenter of global media,
spk_0 finance, and NGO diplomacy.
spk_0 What happens here?
spk_0 writes the moral code for the modern West.
spk_0 If Mamdanny can recode anti-Semitism in New York City,
spk_0 if he can make the erosion of Jewish legitimacy
spk_0 appear as moral evolution,
spk_0 he will have created the prototype
spk_0 for the global isolation of Jews.
spk_0 NGOS will copy it.
spk_0 Universities will teach it.
spk_0 European mayors will cite it.
spk_0 Within a decade,
spk_0 it will become the new democratic standard
spk_0 for polite exclusion.
spk_0 A world where Jews are still invited into the room,
spk_0 but no longer allowed to define what safety means.
spk_0 This is the birth of a modern secular demitude,
spk_0 a system in which Jews are tolerated only so long
spk_0 as they abandon the authority to speak for themselves.
spk_0 It is not imposed by religion,
spk_0 but by virtue,
spk_0 not by threat of death,
spk_0 but by fear of moral disapproval.
spk_0 It promises equality while quietly restoring subordination,
spk_0 turning Jewish presence into a conditional privilege
spk_0 that exists only at the pleasure of others.
spk_0 It would not be the first time such a model succeeded.
spk_0 London under its current mayor,
spk_0 Sadiq Khan,
spk_0 showed how power could disarm Jewish vigilance
spk_0 without open hostility.
spk_0 Khan began with outreach,
spk_0 with interfaith partnerships,
spk_0 and moral gestures that calmed suspicion.
spk_0 Over time, anti-Semitism in London was normalized,
spk_0 not through violence,
spk_0 but through fatigue.
spk_0 Jewish fear was reframed as overreaction.
spk_0 Israel became a moral problem rather than a partner.
spk_0 The method worked because it felt like progress.
spk_0 Mammdani's politics draw from that same playbook
spk_0 of charm and restraint,
spk_0 the politics of empathy as a ratio.
spk_0 For 80 years,
spk_0 Western civilization has treated anti-Semitism
spk_0 as the moral boundary that defines its decency.
spk_0 If that boundary falls in New York City,
spk_0 the capital of global legitimacy,
spk_0 it will fall everywhere.
spk_0 The diaspora will lose the civilizational protection
spk_0 that grew out of the memory of the Holocaust.
spk_0 Israel will lose the moral shield that memory provided,
spk_0 and the world that once said,
spk_0 never again will find a new way to forget,
spk_0 not through hate, but through virtue.
spk_0 So yes, Jews should be concerned about Zoran Mammdani,
spk_0 but not because he will roar with hatred,
spk_0 the paralyze in the opposite,
spk_0 in the smile, the invitation,
spk_0 the handshake in front of the synagogue,
spk_0 the next phase of anti-Semitism will not come shouting,
spk_0 it will come applauding,
spk_0 it will come in the name of justice,
spk_0 and by the time it finishes,
spk_0 it will have rewritten who speaks for the Jews,
spk_0 and who is allowed to be one.
spk_0 The question of who is a Jew
spk_0 can be answered in different ways by different people,
spk_0 but one would reasonably assume the answer
spk_0 has to be based on some kind of standard.
spk_0 In political polls, there are no standards at all.
spk_0 Their polls tell us nothing about what Jews believe
spk_0 because they can't define what a Jew is.
spk_0 And how do you measure something you can't define?
spk_0 In the New York City's mayoral election this past week,
spk_0 the pre-election gold standard, Quinnipiac poll,
spk_0 showed Andrew Cuomo taking 60% of the Jewish vote,
spk_0 Curtis Sleewa taking 12%,
spk_0 and Zoran Memdani having to make do with 16%.
spk_0 However, exit polls, which usually rely
spk_0 on a very small Jewish sample,
spk_0 claim that 63% voted for Cuomo,
spk_0 only 3% for Sleewa,
spk_0 and 33% for Mamdani.
spk_0 Polls of Jewish voters are not only notoriously unreliable,
spk_0 dependent on small sample sizes to capture
spk_0 a complex community.
spk_0 They may not even measure what they claim to.
spk_0 The basic problem that pops up is obvious.
spk_0 When you compare the polls showing 28% of Catholics
spk_0 and the 36% of Protestants voting for Mamdani,
spk_0 compared to the 43% of Hispanics
spk_0 and 48% of Black voters backing the radical candidate.
spk_0 Even though Hispanics are a significant percentage
spk_0 of New York City's Catholic population,
spk_0 there's obviously a sizable gap
spk_0 between the religious Hispanic vote
spk_0 and the secular Hispanic vote.
spk_0 Likewise, the city's sizable number
spk_0 of Black Protestants and Black voters.
spk_0 But the same poll groups Jews together
spk_0 with the Protestants and Catholics.
spk_0 While other groups are separate by religion and race,
spk_0 Jews are polled as a race.
spk_0 Yet the results are reported as if they were polled
spk_0 as a religion.
spk_0 The Jewish vote is watered down
spk_0 to the point of meaninglessness,
spk_0 yet described as a committed electorate.
spk_0 From a religious and philosophical standpoint,
spk_0 the question of who is a Jew is complex.
spk_0 But when applied to a science like polling,
spk_0 it ought to come with standards.
spk_0 Polling has none.
spk_0 The Quinnipiac and Sienna polls, in typical fashion,
spk_0 allow people to quote unquote,
spk_0 self-identify as Jews.
spk_0 Who would claim to be Jewish?
spk_0 Who isn't?
spk_0 Anti-Israel politicians in New York,
spk_0 from Alexandria, Ocasio-Cortez,
spk_0 to state-centered or Julius Alizarrava,
spk_0 falsely claimed to be Jewish too,
spk_0 as a Jew,
spk_0 their hostility to the Jewish state,
spk_0 their far from alone,
spk_0 social media is full of fake Jews
spk_0 who find clout and clicks in hating Israel.
spk_0 Polling has even fewer safeguards.
spk_0 It doesn't have to be this way.
spk_0 All pollsters have to do is apply a basic test.
spk_0 Pollsters have an alternative way
spk_0 of meaningfully measuring the Jewish vote,
spk_0 which is to ask about synagogue affiliation and attendance.
spk_0 Every time this has been done,
spk_0 the Jewish vote becomes significantly more pro-Israel
spk_0 and more Jewish.
spk_0 During the heyday of then-US President Barack Obama's
spk_0 Iran nuclear deal, for example,
spk_0 Gallup broke down its polling of the Jewish vote
spk_0 by asking about synagogue attendance
spk_0 and found that 60% of Jews
spk_0 who attended synagogue services on a weekly basis
spk_0 disapproved of Obama.
spk_0 While 58% of those who went to synagogue
spk_0 seldom are never approved of him,
spk_0 polls of Jewish voters
spk_0 would look dramatically different
spk_0 if instead of allowing anyone and everyone
spk_0 to quote unquote,
spk_0 self-identify as Jewish,
spk_0 they asked about synagogue attendance.
spk_0 There are people who feel very Jewish
spk_0 despite not being religious or going to synagogue.
spk_0 And a recent Washington Post poll
spk_0 provides a demonstration of another question
spk_0 that Polsters could ask.
spk_0 It had looked to create a poll of American Jews
spk_0 that would show that they are turning against Israel.
spk_0 An unintentionally revealed the polls agenda
spk_0 by disclosing its methodology and definition of Jews,
spk_0 quote,
spk_0 the sample includes adults who identify as Jewish by religion,
spk_0 as well as those who identify as adults
spk_0 with no religious affiliation but Jewish,
spk_0 ethnically, culturally,
spk_0 or through their family background.
spk_0 And either were raised Jewish
spk_0 or have a parent who is Jewish.
spk_0 The Washington Post casts the loosest possible net,
spk_0 watering down the definition of a Jewish respondent
spk_0 to the point of absurdity,
spk_0 just to get its results.
spk_0 Among those who said that being Jewish
spk_0 is very important to them,
spk_0 63% supported Israel's campaign against Hamas.
spk_0 While in perfect proportion,
spk_0 63% of those who answered that being Jewish
spk_0 is not important to them opposed Israel.
spk_0 There is a term for people to whom being Jewish
spk_0 is not at all important,
spk_0 non-Jewish people.
spk_0 That's not a judgmental definition.
spk_0 It's a pragmatic one.
spk_0 The Jewishness of someone to whom being Jewish
spk_0 is unimportant is unimportant.
spk_0 His or her views on Jewish matters
spk_0 ought to be as unimportant as they consider Jewishness.
spk_0 A poll that includes large numbers of people
spk_0 to whom the entire criteria
spk_0 that the poll is based on doesn't matter
spk_0 is a contradiction in terms.
spk_0 Polsters could ask those they insist on polling
spk_0 as if they were Jewish
spk_0 about their meaningful religious affiliation
spk_0 or identification.
spk_0 Instead, like the Washington Post,
spk_0 they poll people who are not in any way
spk_0 affiliated with the Jewish community
spk_0 to tear down that same community.
