spk_0 That was my question. So I have one of the Bell Roy leather cases. They all right. Is that real leather or vegan leather? I forget

spk_0 You don't know it feels like leather leather. I don't know

spk_0 They're good, but I'll prefer the more leathery leather cases like bullstrap Ryan London

spk_0 On our stuff like that so I okay two things this we're not that we're gonna spend a lot of time on the case but

spk_0 My criteria for this was I had to find a case where they made a color that would go with the orange because we've talked about this

spk_0 I don't love the orange but as a highlight it's fine

spk_0 Okay, is it accent? I mean it's fine with this case which is kind of a sleight bluish

spk_0 Grayish carbon color. It's almost like the tech woven case

spk_0 The texture is literally not even close to not the texture, but color. This is the tech woven

spk_0 Maybe they sent me one of those Sienna Brown tech woven cases and I can't leave the house with that

spk_0 I've just I've been told that's ugly. It's like why did they did they forget to match them anyway

spk_0 But my other thing is I prefer like the nomad cases which don't have any branding on the outside

spk_0 That's that's my preference except on the side. They do have it on the side

spk_0 Do they because that's one of the leather cases I literally reviewed the cameras I can focus on but it has a maybe because I've always done black

spk_0 You I've never noticed it like probably was noticed. I never noticed it's discrete is discrete

spk_0 This is but I figured Bell Roy is

spk_0 Different than like bolt strap like that just feels like a weird thing to walk around out of case like so or Ryan London

spk_0 What guy's name is just on my case and it's like you've dropped your phone somewhere and they're gonna be looking for Ryan London in the phone book to be fair

spk_0 I'll link my leather case review video in the thing but the Ryan London and bull strap

spk_0 It's actually their logo rather than the full name

spk_0 But the bull strap it's a literal bull on the back of the case

spk_0 So you have to be cool with with that. I'm not maybe you do

spk_0 Rodeos or you play rodeo by Aaron Copeland either way and then the Ryan London is like a little r on some anyway

spk_0 Anyway, I was I the only reason I wanted to bring it up

spk_0 I was curious if you're going caseless or case full

spk_0 With your iPhone 17 Pro Max. Yeah, so I would go caseless and I had been for for a while

spk_0 Actually, this just came yesterday. So until then I was and it's it's okay

spk_0 But it is a big enough phone the Pro Max that I'm like I could use just a little bit of extra friction

spk_0 Yeah, so well I was testing a lot of cases

spk_0 So I went both ways and I dropped my phone. Oh, I dropped my phone the other day

spk_0 I said this in my leather case review, but I mentioned here it was in the nomad leather case at the time and

spk_0 You could see on that little corner the leather case got a nick

spk_0 So it landed on the corner and then I found it face down

spk_0 I was sitting on my patio and it slipped out of my pocket while I was sitting down

spk_0 So it wasn't from full like standing height, but it hit the corner the corner is not dented

spk_0 Some people were saying the aluminum unibody frame dense more easily in the titanium

spk_0 So even if it was in a case people have had little dents happen didn't dent and even though it landed face down

spk_0 Something that we were kind of complaining about before with the 16

spk_0 Zero scratches on the screen no hairline scratches nothing. I do think ceramic shield too is gonna be less scratchful

spk_0 But that's possible. I think it's good

spk_0 So yeah, I think and I've kind of just settled into the fact that this phone weighs 14 pounds anyway

spk_0 So putting another pound of a case on it is fine if I was using the pro

spk_0 I don't know am I feel a little bit differently?

spk_0 I definitely do not have a case on the air like I just feel like it's ridiculous to put a case on the air

spk_0 So I'm that was weird. I just held it up so high no one could see it

spk_0 Yeah, you have to hold it sideways. That's it by the way though. I just found our bonus topic

spk_0 And the big news is they actually come with Alexa plus like in the box

spk_0 Alexa plus was announced months ago. It was supposed to come to a bunch of

spk_0 Amazon devices

spk_0 I actually bought an echo show to try it and as soon as I realized it showed me an ad every time

spk_0 I woke up the screen and that it rotated to follow me around my office. I said goodbye and I returned it

spk_0 So do you have any I know you have google home speakers, but you're not talking about one of these one

spk_0 You didn't buy one these like you can't actually get these yet right well. I bought the echo show

spk_0 11

spk_0 Like I guess whatever the previous model and it was supposedly it gonna get like prioritized getting Alexa plus

spk_0 Because it was like the newest screen based one and it looked just like this. It was like a rotating speaker screen

spk_0 But yeah, these are new and these come with Alexa plus out of the box

spk_0 These are 220 and 180 dollars

spk_0 respectable

spk_0 I like I like how the first time you said it they come with Alexa plus in the box like there's this little tiny

spk_0 Pusher sitting in the box with them. Right out of the box doesn't he said?

spk_0 I think that actually says everything you need to know about these yeah that it

spk_0 The whole point of these devices is to keep you paying for Amazon Prime right

spk_0 It's like for real like that is the that is the thing because you have to have you can pay for Alexa plus

spk_0 I actually got an email on time from Amazon remind like correcting something I had written about oh

spk_0 You can pay just for

spk_0 Alexa plus actually in that case it was you can actually just pay for prime for prime video

spk_0 Which come up with no one does that there's no one if you are one of our listeners

spk_0 And you don't pay for Amazon Prime, but you do subscribe to prime video

spk_0 Yeah, we're gonna get to all that but Alexa is like or Amazon's like you know what we could do

spk_0 We could just keep people paying for prime. Yeah, we could just lock people in forever

spk_0 Can I say I've had to explain to both my own mother and my own mother-in-law

spk_0 That they're not gonna have to pay for Amazon in the last three weeks because both of them were like that

spk_0 They're now they are going to have to they are going to have to because

spk_0 We I was up had the Amazon household before you could have had up to five users

spk_0 In your account under the one annual subscription and so I had an account my wife had an account my mom and my mother-in-law

spk_0 Now with that change which we talked about a couple weeks ago

spk_0 You can only have two adults and they have to share the same home address which is how to get you

spk_0 Uh, it's like same default shipping or whatever billing address. So

spk_0 Yeah, both of them were like I got this email

spk_0 So anyway, but one of the things so Alexa plus is supposedly a gentick type an assistant

spk_0 Like that'll be on the echoes. You can connect your uber open table ticket master account

spk_0 You can ask to do things like book dinner reservations. I'll be waiting for either gen to ease video

spk_0 From the verge or Joanna's turn to test this out because I want to know how well that actually works

spk_0 Are they also announced new echoes the echo dot max and the echo studio

spk_0 Echo dot max is 99 dollars

spk_0 Or in yeah, and then the echo studio is $210 and Amazon has now released this feature where you can use them as an

spk_0 Home theater system. So you can buy five

spk_0 Mix and match like echo dot studios and maxes and you can create surround sound with your fire TV stick

spk_0 Kudos to Amazon for actually letting you connect five

spk_0 Whereas you know apple tv only lets you connect a stereo pair of home pods big or small and then virtualizes this around sound

spk_0 You can actually do five echoes. I'd be curious if anyone's actually gonna do this

spk_0 But you can do it

spk_0 Also Kindle scribe with color you can get it and the Kindle scribe color soft is $630

spk_0 So kind of I guess they're taking on remarkable a little bit

spk_0 Trying to be yeah, well, so the difference here though is because I love the remarkable

spk_0 But the remarkable does not have access to Kindle library like books

spk_0 You could you have to do this weird dance where if you can get them as like the e-pub

spk_0 Whatever that open source format is then you can put things out

spk_0 But it's not like they're not formatted for that. So like that. This is a different thing altogether

spk_0 I don't I don't know like that's

spk_0 I guess it's in roughly the same price category once you buy or marketable a pen

spk_0 I don't really call it a marker a case that kind of thing but like that's pretty pricey pretty pricey

spk_0 I'm the Kindle scribe

spk_0 $430 but the cut if you want the color soft. Yeah, it's

spk_0 630 that's pretty wild. Are you gonna test this echo studio? The sound? No, do you think no? Okay?

spk_0 It is such an interesting thing to watch Amazon do this

spk_0 Because Apple has had some success but only because people think of Apple is like making cool hardware and Amazon makes lots of hardware

spk_0 The cheapest worst thing you could buy. They'll just give it to you for free

spk_0 And like I think I read like a review that the dot max

spk_0 These names these names are just echo dot max. Those are three words that mean nothing together

spk_0 But it is the name of a product

spk_0 And the fact that I can remember that but I can't remember the name of the Google thing sitting on the counter in the

spk_0 Which there's a new Google thing this week we're gonna talk about. I will have to talk about that

spk_0 I have to learn some more names

spk_0 Also, I'm running this down. We have to talk about the fact that they are breaking your

spk_0 Gentleness thermostats but anyway

spk_0 That's what the thing. Yeah, they describe the dot max as the best sounding speaker at that price and size point

spk_0 And as far as I know it's the exact same price and exact same size as home buy many

spk_0 So I would be interested to hear someone

spk_0 Explain the difference between them. I'm I mean, I might the one thing is the Amazon the home theater feature

spk_0 You have to have the new speakers

spk_0 So it doesn't seem like you can mix and match which there's probably been what a hundred different echo models over the years from the dots

spk_0 To the tower style to the round things

spk_0 But if you want this home theater you have to get these new ones

spk_0 So you're talking about if you got five echo studios you're talking about over a thousand dollars of speakers

spk_0 And it only works with

spk_0 Fire TV stick so I would need to get a fire TV stick as well

spk_0 And I don't have one of those I didn't plan on getting one

spk_0 That is one nice thing about the Apple TV home pod feature is they do have

spk_0 The audio return feature

spk_0 So you can you can use your Apple TV and if you were going to watch like your cable box or you have a video game system

spk_0 Plug directly into your TV HDMI ports your Apple TV can still to send that sound to the home pods

spk_0 You actually don't have to use the Apple TV for everything and still use your home pods as like

spk_0 The audio part. I don't know if it carries through like Dolby Atmos

spk_0 I don't think it does that part probably just Apple TV

spk_0 So that is a feature where Apple TV and HomePod has whereas the echo dots it looks like you have to use the fire TV stick

spk_0 So

spk_0 Run that out there also the new fire TVs like you can actually buy a TV TV with Amazon fire TV built-in QLED

spk_0 Line up ports Dolby Vision HDR 10 plus those start of 480 bucks

spk_0 And then the fire TV stick 4k runs Vega OS. I don't know what that is. I haven't used a fire stick in a while

spk_0 I don't know, but that sounds amazing. That sounds great

spk_0 Not Vegas just Vega. Oh nevermind. Which was that that was the Sony brand wasn't the Sony Vega

spk_0 Those used to be the old big projection TVs anyway

spk_0 And then rings retinal vision doorbells you now have 4k video on the ring and there's a bunch of ring cameras

spk_0 The ring wired doorbell pro for 200 bucks outdoor pro 4k for 250 they got a flood light cam

spk_0 So bunch of new ring devices as well and blinks arc camera

spk_0 Which can give you a panoramic view of your yard

spk_0 Which so many brands under the Amazon umbrella it's a little confused

spk_0 Yeah, also be honest. What does that thing say retinal vision doorbell

spk_0 That literally that sounds like a feature where you can unlock your front door now with your eyeball like

spk_0 Is that a thing right? I don't think that that's what that is

spk_0 I think it's just saying it has like high

spk_0 Just for the video, but I'm just saying retinal vision makes it sound like it's looking at your eyeball don't like your door

spk_0 Yeah, no no

spk_0 I've tested some doorbells where it reads your palm not like tells you your future

spk_0 But it just reads your palm unlock your door

spk_0 And um it was okay. I don't care if we're home key works plenty fast. That's all I need

spk_0 But yeah, bunch of stuff you I've soon tell me again. I've already forgot. Do you have nest

spk_0 And not nest do you have any Alexa or echo devices in your home? We have four echo

spk_0 dots that have the LEDs on the front of their your look kids a lot of two versions of those

spk_0 We have three of the original ones that had the LED on them and then they revised that

spk_0 And the only difference is the first version were hockey bucks the second version of we're like the little mini globe things

spk_0 Right, but they both the only reason we bought them is because because that alarms they're clocked

spk_0 They're the clocks in our kids is room

spk_0 The parental controls are actually fine and that's the secret by the way if you buy an echo dot

spk_0 turn on parental controls

spk_0 Because that's the only way to get the thing to stop trying to sell you stuff every time you ask it to do something right

spk_0 Because every time you ask it like play happy bird they it'll be like did you know for 1499 you can buy

spk_0 Six versions of happy birthday by being crossby. I'm like wow just sing happy birthday

spk_0 But it but it can't right it will no it'll absolutely sing happy birthday but they all will except for

spk_0 The home pod is a little bit finicky about it

spk_0 Gemini for home the rollout started today if you have the Google home app even on your iPhone or you have the Google Nest devices

spk_0 Gemini for home is rolling out and if you have a bunch of Google home devices actually some pretty interesting stuff

spk_0 It can do if you have

spk_0 Nest cameras and then you also have like the Google Nest hub maxes and you can ask it certain things

spk_0 And the requests are more natural language for instance you could say

spk_0 Hey, you know who I'm about to cook can you turn on the lights and it will intelligently know because you said cook

spk_0 You're talking about the kitchens. It will turn on the kitchen lights. You can also do

spk_0 Requests with exceptions so you could say turn on all the lights except the kitchen lights and lock the front door

spk_0 You can do those kind of like multi-step commands and Gemini for home should be able to parse those

spk_0 Apple home would have zero chance of getting any of that if you

spk_0 Say any word outside of the very narrow like turn on the bedroom lights

spk_0 Anything outside of those parameters and it's like I think you want us to play Bing Crosby

spk_0 So yeah, we'll do that

spk_0 but also

spk_0 The Gemini part can even do things as advanced as if you have a camera setup

spk_0 You can ask it for things like who ate my plants

spk_0 For instance, I guess if you have a house plant and you see some bite marks taken out of it

spk_0 If maybe your dog walked up or child

spk_0 Walked up and took a bite out of a leaf

spk_0 If the Google Nest cam sought then it would be able to tell you actually your child at your plant or your dog

spk_0 Whichever the case may be so honestly that's kind of cool. I mean I have

spk_0 Apple HomeKit secure video cameras on the outside of my house everywhere

spk_0 I have one of my garage I have my doorbell cam. I have my Eve outdoor cam for the backyard

spk_0 And if I could ask

spk_0 Apple intelligence or somebody to be like who

spk_0 Hit our mailbox and it could actually just go to the video clip of the car hitting the mailbox

spk_0 That would be huge because trying to scroll video in the home app from a doorbell cam is

spk_0 Just an effort in futility

spk_0 It's not impossible to get the exact day and time that you want if it actually recorded

spk_0 Because a detected motion like

spk_0 It's not great

spk_0 And so if that actually works for the Google and like you know Alexa plus

spk_0 I don't know if you can ask Alexa plus that but that actually be really cool feature or like show me

spk_0 The you know when show me video of when we got home

spk_0 So like my garage camera and if we were wondering like do we take the stuff out of the back or did someone forget

spk_0 Someone to leave the dome light on if you could just ask it to someone leave the car dome light on

spk_0 That would be really cool and I think we're probably decades away from Apple doing that but Google can do it now

spk_0 Interestingly

spk_0 They also announced something called Google Home Premium a subscription service and apparently it's included with Google one

spk_0 And the only reason I knew this for sure is because I got a push notification

spk_0 That's like a part of it

spk_0 But I don't the only reason to bring it out

spk_0 It seems like it replaces the nest subscription the nest oh nest aware is now Google Home Premium

spk_0 And it's also included in Google one

spk_0 Which I think means I'm now paying for two subscriptions

spk_0 And I don't need to be paying for one of them. Oh, but here's the thing I love about this and the reason I make

spk_0 Because Google is like all in on this I get it. Yeah

spk_0 There are two tiers of Google Home Premium which Google Home Premium seems like it's the premium tier of Google Home

spk_0 But Google Home Premium has a standard tier and an advanced tier so

spk_0 You can sign up for Google Home Premium Standard or Google Home Premium Advanced and it replaces your nest or

spk_0 Listen naming things as hard Stephen and I don't understand how a company is biggest Google

spk_0 Hasn't we just joked about the fact that I don't know what the thing on my

spk_0 Kitchen counter is called and I've had it for years and actually I'm pretty sure that's because it's called something different than it was when I first

spk_0 Right, I really mean the nest home hub and it's now the Google Home Hub max I think

spk_0 Plethora of things the names you have to remember there's the Google Home Speaker

spk_0 Gonna be 99 dollars again. I think competing with HomePod mini and the new echo dot

spk_0 But as you come with the Gemini assistant rather than Google assistant built in and that's basically the story with Google is

spk_0 Right now probably through next year all the Google Assistant stuff is going away

spk_0 And it's being replaced with Gemini as like their LLM AI powering all the things whether it's home or

spk_0 On Android phones and things like that. So yeah, it's you can get in a real bright red

spk_0 Yeah, I mean I always want to know how these things sound and really the only thing the companies making them care about is how well they listen

spk_0 Yeah, talk to me about it. Well, I mean, I feel like I'm trying to channel my

spk_0 Inner I don't know John Groober who just who sometimes will focus on one specific thing and can talk about it for a long time

spk_0 I'm only allowed to write like 700 or 800 words at a time

spk_0 So this was not nearly as long as I had wanted it to be right

spk_0 But I just kept thinking about the selfie camera and my kids thought I was funny because they've never seen me take a selfie unless

spk_0 It's when I'm trying to control them all into

spk_0 But as soon as I controlled them all to take a phone listen, I have teenagers, right?

spk_0 So the fact that this is what I said in the article the fact that we don't that I don't think about the self-camera much and don't take a lot of them

spk_0 It's not because I don't like selfies. It's because I have teenagers who don't want to be in photos with us

spk_0 And so I was able to in as soon as that camera switched

spk_0 Automatically from portrait. They're like wait, what did you do? I'm like I did nothing except for make you stand here

spk_0 And they're like that's amazing and what I realized is like

spk_0 From from our perspective when I say our perspective, I mean 40 something-ish

spk_0 grown-ups

spk_0 I don't I'll put myself in that category. It's made it ish. I said ish and something ish grown-ups

spk_0 I did not I don't think selfies are a thing

spk_0 But you you do you may see people taking them a lot you may do it

spk_0 But you don't think about the camera, right? You take a selfie because it's like convenient, right?

spk_0 And apple has been making the selfie camera better. It's significantly better this here

spk_0 But the way that it's better this year is I think kind of unexpected and

spk_0 is

spk_0 It feels way over thought but in the most

spk_0 Amazing like great way. It's yeah, I wanted to say delightful

spk_0 But someone trolled me last time I used that word to talk about apple. Why?

spk_0 I don't know somebody somebody trolled me in the youtube comments. It's fine. I can take it

spk_0 Oh, it was still it's delightful

spk_0 And I think it's like one of those things that apple note like they said in the keynote 500 billion selfies are taking a year

spk_0 They know that this is probably the single most used feature

spk_0 Um the iPhone and they did it. It was totally unnecessary

spk_0 But also I think it's it's it's like delightful

spk_0 Well, and so mkbg released his review of iphone 17

spk_0 Like not pro not a other thing it's just iphone 17 and he has a great demo of the selfie camera

spk_0 Whereas you know, he's in the frame. It's vertical and just people walking into the frame

spk_0 Namely people who works in his studio and the iPhone just automatically switches

spk_0 Aspect ratio to widescreen without having to rotate the phone you could just keep holding your iphone

spk_0 In that portrait position

spk_0 So i'll link his review in jason's article on the show notes, but it is very cool

spk_0 I was playing around with it and you know, you don't I wish you did have more control

spk_0 namely like

spk_0 Make it and you can there's like a zoom control and like a crop control and you can rotate it

spk_0 To be vertical so like if you rotate to the selfie camera like on the 17 any of the 17 or the iphone air

spk_0 There is like rotate and you get this kind of view

spk_0 But it's not the full 16 by nine aspect ratio. It's kind of like a four by three vertical

spk_0 And the only way to get it to that full

spk_0 widescreen mode holding your phone vertical is if other people enter the frame

spk_0 So i kind of wish you could just do that like force it with a button because if you are recording

spk_0 Selfie video maybe for a youtube channel and it is much easier to hold your phone vertically like this

spk_0 rather than

spk_0 Actually do it doing your favor real quick and you hold up your phone as if you're going to take video

spk_0 Like you're gonna be holding it for like a couple minutes. How do you hold your phone to take video?

spk_0 Which way horizontally landscape landscape horizontally. I'm curious how you do it if I was gonna take that I just would do this

spk_0 And use this you use this bus. Oh see okay

spk_0 So jason which is the way that apple and god intended is that you had hold it this way and you'd use the button that they put there

spk_0 Perfectly aligned for your finger. I wasn't getting into the button. I was just interested in hand placement

spk_0 Yeah, but how would I how else would I hold it if I'm about to show you so for those listening

spk_0 Jason is holding it with his four fingers pointer through pinky at the top of the phone

spk_0 Thumb on the bottom to stabilize and he holds it like this for some reason and maybe please go to our youtube channel and subscribe

spk_0 And you could see this

spk_0 This is how I hold it when I'm capturing things for a long time

spk_0 So pointer on the top middle and ring kind of on the back and then pinky

spk_0 Getting rsi supporting the bottom of the phone and this is how I

spk_0 This is how I hold my phone when I'm capturing video or actually just taking pictures like in my 17 per max review video that'll come out someday

spk_0 Uh, I should know myself thing pictures. This is how I hold it. No, Steven

spk_0 I mean, I get this this feels more comfortable. I'll give you that I feel like this is more stable

spk_0 No, Steven you're that that hurts me just watching your fingers like that

spk_0 My pinky doesn't like it. I'll be honest. My pinky feels like the one

spk_0 This is also so much more stable the way I'm doing it right now is also by the way we both know

spk_0 If you're shooting video you don't even worry about how stable it does anymore. Well action mode is insane

spk_0 I know I still think about it anyway. I hold my phone in a crazy way apparently to capture video

spk_0 But if I was doing selfie video rather than hold it like this

spk_0 To try and capture video myself

spk_0 It would be nice if I was doing the selfie camera just hold it like this and get the widescreen

spk_0 16 by nine aspect ratio. That's all I'm saying. I just wish you could force that without a bunch of people in the frame

spk_0 That's all right

spk_0 Anyway, selfie cam is great on the iPhone 17 and the camera itself is great just overall

spk_0 I did a lot of tests in my video and like even if you zoom all the way to 40x

spk_0 It's actually pretty wild the pictures you can get

spk_0 It's a digital crop but because of that 48 megapixel sensor it is impressive video or audio yeah

spk_0 Back up for satchee formerly of the verge had a good video comparing the zoom the telephoto

spk_0 Camera system on the 16 pro versus the 17 pro. Yes, if you're if you find yourself taking a lot of photos and you're

spk_0 Interested in that I suggest you go wash it's like I took a thousand photos with the iPhone 17 pro or whatever

spk_0 That's kind of her thing is taking a lot of videos or photos or whatever. Yes, but she did a good good good run down on the differences

spk_0 And yeah, the it's impressive

spk_0 In that 48 megapixel sensor is doing a lot of work there. She had a great video

spk_0 I will put hers in the show notes and also

spk_0 So they're in there when the Instagram iPad app launched

spk_0 You said on this podcast that they are testing

spk_0 What it's like to open the Instagram app and go directly to reels rather than the feed

spk_0 Because the Instagram iPad app does exactly that it goes. It's all reels all the time

spk_0 And if you want to see photos you have to do some kind of jiu jitsu to get it. Well

spk_0 You're right the verge reported Instagram is testing opening right onto reels

spk_0 The experiment right now is going on in India

spk_0 But it's going to work similarly how it does in the iPad and honestly when I open Instagram on my iPhone

spk_0 I will typically see a real first anyway technically

spk_0 It's in the quote unquote feed

spk_0 Because there are still photos and carousels in that feed as well

spk_0 But Instagram is testing this 100%

spk_0 I think in the next year

spk_0 It's probably just going to open to reels by default

spk_0 But yeah, you're right

spk_0 That's all yeah, and I if you want to know how right I was

spk_0 I literally put those words in an article on September 3rd

spk_0 I literally said if medic get away with doing the same thing on the iPhone. I'm sure it would

spk_0 And a lot of them are invitation only some of them are like paid only and I don't know

spk_0 Photo only social media app like traditional Instagram again?

spk_0 Probably not but I feel like the thing is

spk_0 It's not just that

spk_0 I'm I don't care about reels and when I say I don't care about reels

spk_0 I don't mean I like dislike reels what I'm saying is like I'm neutral like fine reels are fine

spk_0 Whatever what I don't like is that Instagram mean something to people

spk_0 Meta clearly wants it to mean something else to people and what it really wants is for it to be the place you go instead of going to tick-tock

spk_0 Whatever like kudos to them they have an app that they can just morph and change and whatever

spk_0 But I do think there's that there's a cost when you do that because Instagram's been around for a long time

spk_0 And it just apparently isn't the thing that it meta wants it to be which is the place where you share

spk_0 Carefully curated photos of your imaginary life at what you want people to think is what's happening in your life

spk_0 But like I just it's in its and here's the thing Steven about this that I think is interesting and it leads into the conversation about the

spk_0 Meta-fives and all that kind of stuff. I posted a story the other day

spk_0 The most benign thing actually must have been yesterday because it's still there

spk_0 I posted this very benign story of my cup of coffee in the morning, right?

spk_0 And people sent me hate because they thought this was AI generated are you for real?

spk_0 Yeah, because it's just like oh the water moves it doesn't move that way coffee

spk_0 I'm like ah

spk_0 I'm like no literally I just put my cup of coffee there and I just

spk_0 Take a quick video and I only did it because I was actually taking

spk_0 Photos of it and I realized like oh actually the steam coming up is kind of cool

spk_0 I should just take a quick little video of it and whatever and people are like oh you're contributing to the AI

spk_0 Slub I'm like no, dude. It's just like my morning coffee. That's wild

spk_0 So I don't know like I don't think that people like stories

spk_0 Reels whatever it's all fine, but people expect a certain thing with Instagram and Meta is just gonna like

spk_0 shove us through this transition to make it something else

spk_0 No, it was not AI generated. I do not AI generate my coffee. I drink real coffee. It's actually an Americano, but like real espresso

spk_0 pulled in a pulled into a double shot with hot water. That's my coffee recipe. Speaking of which what espresso machine do you have?

spk_0 We have a Breville. Yeah, that's Breville. It's not the top-ish tier. It's not like the $2,000 version of a Breville

spk_0 It's like the $900 or $1,000 version, but it like grinds the beans at the top. Oh, yeah, it grinds

spk_0 You can you can set the amount of time for your it's like yeah, it's great. I'm thinking about getting that

spk_0 So here's the whole story so you have meta

spk_0 They have an app called meta AI which I realized yesterday that I had never downloaded and if you want to experience meta vibes

spk_0 Which is their completely AI generated feed videos you have to download the meta AI app

spk_0 But whether you want to or not this next story might have something to do with that

spk_0 Because the news came out that meta is going to use whatever you talk about

spk_0 In that AI app or in any of its AI services like which is also in in like Facebook messenger and Instagram

spk_0 It's going to use any of the

spk_0 Text and stuff that you put in that chat to personalize ads to show you

spk_0 But basically whatever you say to meta AI in whatever form or fashion they're going to use it to train

spk_0 And and target ads to you Adam Osary. He's again over Instagram and threads

spk_0 He had a video saying like no, no, we're totally not spying on you, which I mean like

spk_0 Okay

spk_0 Sure, I guess it's not spying if you tell you about it

spk_0 And if they outwardly say we're training yeah or targeting ads based on what you talk about

spk_0 This is why I did the despicable me quote, you know what I mean the dentist is more of a hobby

spk_0 So anyway, just that is context for the next couple apps we need to talk about

spk_0 Is one earlier this week Sora

spk_0 Two was announced open a eyes

spk_0 You know better video generation tool and the Sora app on iPhone is now out

spk_0 And you can it's invite only right now a lots of people

spk_0 offered to send me to invite I've accepted one from Brian Fajoli

spk_0 Subjected Jason to the invite because I needed him to see this hellscape

spk_0 But the Sora app is basically

spk_0 Reels and TikTok it's a vertical video scrolling feed

spk_0 But everything is AI generated it is all AI generated content

spk_0 So that is the Sora app you can also generate content

spk_0 You can generate with just a text prompt you can give it a photo and then ask it to

spk_0 Generate that I'm going to show one of mine in a moment, which is literally horrifying

spk_0 Uh or you can even do a thing where give it permission for cameos

spk_0 And if you give a permission it will use your likeness or other people can use your likeness to generate AI videos

spk_0 That's the Sora app and just before we actually offer commentary on it that meta AI app

spk_0 Also as a feature called vibes, which is the same thing. It's all AI generated vertical video

spk_0 M.G. Seagler who writes its spyglass

spk_0 He actually tried both and for some reason loves

spk_0 Sora and says he gets sucked in for hours scrolling AI generated video

spk_0 Well, we'll get into that

spk_0 But he says the Sora app is much better than vibes

spk_0 I downloaded the meta AI app to try vibes and even though they are both

spk_0 Terrifying. I will say the Sora app is better for what that's worth

spk_0 I think mostly because the vibes app from meta there's no likeness of real people everything like you can't

spk_0 As far as I can tell I did not see any videos like with real people in it

spk_0 It's all AI generated people so no actual faces, but the Sora app you can

spk_0 So anyway, let's talk about the Sora app

spk_0 First of all, I sent you an invite yesterday. So Jason you should try this

spk_0 And when you set up the app and you could do it afterwards you can give it that cameo permission

spk_0 Sorry, Pikachu started yelling at me from the Sora app when I opened it

spk_0 Did you give it cameo permission?

spk_0 No, Stephen. I'd open this app and I threw my phone. I'm like no, no, no, no

spk_0 Luckily that aluminum unibody frame took the first throw

spk_0 First, no, I threw the ipad I threw the iphone air and it just flew for a very long time

spk_0 It's still flying. It's still in the air. I have to go get it. It's in my backyard. Yeah, no

spk_0 But I want to actually I want you to talk to the app

spk_0 But I want to actually talk about a very important difference between the two things. Sure

spk_0 The Sora app. Okay, Sora is opening eyes video generator, but that this is not just Sora

spk_0 This is a very specific app

spk_0 Then once you use Sora to do a very specific thing

spk_0 Which is like the AI version of tiktok remixes, I guess right?

spk_0 That's the whole point of making a cameo is like now you can let your friends put you into weird videos

spk_0 Like they can deep fake you kind of thing

spk_0 Whereas the meta AI app is not that right? It's like you can tell it to prompt and it'll just make a fantastical weird

spk_0 You know

spk_0 Game of Thrones dragon flying through the valley or something like whatever you want

spk_0 So the Sora app you're gonna see people you know. I don't want the Sora app

spk_0 I don't even want to interact with it because I'm like oh I could experiment with this and then all of a sudden

spk_0 I realize

spk_0 Except everyone I know which none of them are using the steps. That's probably fine

spk_0 But would be able to like remix whatever I come up with and use me and like or not gonna judge you Steven

spk_0 You can like people could say

spk_0 Put Jason on the severance macro data refinement floor or whatever and and if you had given permission to do you do have to give permission

spk_0 People could just generate those videos out of whole cloth with your likeness and

spk_0 That being said the accuracy at which it gets some people like Andrew Edwards

spk_0 Is impressive at times like the likeness is very accurate

spk_0 But again every single video is AI generated and that

spk_0 As you scroll and and I just seems been all over she's been creating tons of videos

spk_0 She is also given permission for other people to create

spk_0 Videos with her likeness and there's been lots of that

spk_0 And then people are also doing like historical like here's

spk_0 JFK but they changed the last few words of his speech

spk_0 And so ask not what your country can do for you ask how much money your country owes you or whatever because that's what it says

spk_0 Number one just the highest level premise

spk_0 Do I want to scroll the social network where literally every piece of content I see is AI generated and

spk_0 Absolutely nothing is real

spk_0 After about five minutes, I was able to answer that question for myself, which is no

spk_0 I think one of the reasons why people enjoy scrolling TikTok or Reels or whatever

spk_0 Is because you are many I'll say often 90% of the time seeing real people do real things

spk_0 Whether like whatever that might be whether they're explaining a recipe

spk_0 Whether they are like giving fitness tips whether they are skateboard like the red bull video with the highest skateboard drop in ever like you're seeing real things

spk_0 And so the very

spk_0 premise that I would want to just scroll a social media app and

spk_0 So Lee C. AI generated video. I am very curious

spk_0 MGC glir apparently gets sucked into it

spk_0 Aside from being impressive from a technical standpoint as to how accurate it is generating video and people's likeness

spk_0 That is not an experience I want to have

spk_0 At all I think or for extended period of times what right

spk_0 Yeah, so okay Ben Thompson had an interesting take on the meta AI app

spk_0 Which was sure well that's like the tab right yeah the middle AI app is like the chat button everything

spk_0 Which is that it's like the first real VR experience right because all of the stuff is fake

spk_0 And he did make the point that the fact that everything in there is fake is probably good because it sure removes that friction point of

spk_0 Is this real my Americano is real people

spk_0 But like I didn't make it in Sora or anything like that. I just took a

spk_0 12-second video of my morning copy

spk_0 But it also the stuff in there is not necessarily it's realistic

spk_0 But it definitely has a very futuristic AI like has a very distinctive style right that it's in

spk_0 And so when you when you're in it it feels fantastical it feels

spk_0 Like it feels fake and it's in it's but it's sort of like you could just sit there and enjoy

spk_0 This virtual experience of going to all these worlds far off places or whatever the Sora one is totally different

spk_0 And maybe I'm just old and don't fully understand

spk_0 The delight of making JFK say weird things

spk_0 But that to me feels like are they just listen Steven

spk_0 Are they just trying to desensitize us to the fact that this is what the reality is gonna be like in a couple years where every

spk_0 We're just never gonna know and you and you're gonna find way more deep fakes of yourself pushing like

spk_0 You know

spk_0 That's and that's the thing so

spk_0 Another video here's like a dog riding a motorized scooter and it's supposed to look like dash cam footage of a car

spk_0 And it's supposed to make you think it's real

spk_0 And honestly if I saw this scrolling tiktok or instagram reels I would have to think for a second is this real or not

spk_0 And in a lot of these video again the actual person

spk_0 likeness in some of these videos

spk_0 And again Sora too

spk_0 Incredible at generating people that don't look you know you think about the Will Smith eating spaghetti video

spk_0 It is like we've come a long way

spk_0 Because it looks really good and real

spk_0 This is kind of funny seeing Chris Welch at Chipotle

spk_0 Something about it doesn't

spk_0 Feel good. I don't know. I don't know what it is like

spk_0 I think I don't know I tend to avoid conspiracy

spk_0 Like thought process like they are desensitizing us for the future where the robots will just run everything

spk_0 But I it does feel like both meta and open AI are saying people are really gonna love AI generate video

spk_0 They're they just they're gonna love consuming it

spk_0 They're gonna want entire feeds of just that so we're just gonna give it to them

spk_0 And I would be curious I haven't shown it to my kids yet. I would be curious their response to it

spk_0 I have a feeling my oldest would be like nah

spk_0 And I think my middle someone would be like oh that's kind of cool and and might watch it because

spk_0 Again the addictive nature of any of these scrolling video apps are

spk_0 It's strong. It's a strong pull from what from what it is and so

spk_0 I

spk_0 Don't I don't like it and I also don't think the

spk_0 So allowing it to use your

spk_0 Cameo or your likeness like again. There's so many videos about you. This one actually does not look as good

spk_0 Like as far as her likeness in this video

spk_0 I was close to doing it because I'm like listen. I guess I'm a tech journalist

spk_0 I should like do all the features and trial the things and there was a moment where it was like

spk_0 Allow this app to use your likeness and and other people to use your likeness to generate videos and

spk_0 To call back to the deep fake of mine from months ago and that felt weird

spk_0 Like that that doesn't feel good like I don't I don't want that

spk_0 I don't want my likeness to be able to be generated into whatever even if it's in this sandboxed app where everything is AI generated

spk_0 Everyone should understand. It's AI generated. I don't want that. I don't want people to be able to do that

spk_0 Technically, yeah people can do it now people can download my youtube videos

spk_0 They can upload it to hey Jen and like make what they made a few months ago as far as my deep fake

spk_0 But but that that feels like it's it's crossed over something like it's crossed a Rubicon

spk_0 Did that does that hit you at all? Yeah, all I know is I like the meta one better

spk_0 It's because it's way better. It's so much better and I think so and just to go back to Ben Thompson again

spk_0 Uh on Stratuckery. I don't know if it was today or yesterday

spk_0 He talked about it and he he talked about like the

spk_0 the idea that

spk_0 Something I don't remember exactly where the cash truck comes from but the 90% 9% 1% and he's like

spk_0 YouTube is making AI tools for the 1% which are youtube creators

spk_0 So like youtube introduced a bunch of generative AI features or AI features when it did it's made for youtube thing and but it's like

spk_0 We will identify every single product in every video you make and offer to put a link there for you for like sponsorships

spk_0 Like they want to get what they realize Steven is when you make sponsored when you make a sponsored segment for a video

spk_0 You do doesn't make any money and they're like hey, what if we figured out a way to do that for you

spk_0 So that's the 1%

spk_0 Open AI is like for the 9% of people who want to just create like an edit and remix and do stuff and

spk_0 Metamate an app for the 90% which are people just want to consume stuff

spk_0 Like you just want to scroll if you what you want to do is just to scroll through a feed of

spk_0 Of magical AI generated environments and whatever

spk_0 The meta AI app is going to be better for that if what you want to do is remix your friends into weird videos along side

spk_0 Ronald McDonald DJing whatever like

spk_0 Right then the then the Sora app is the from opening

spk_0 I is the one that you want and what you want to do is make money on youtube then youtube shorts is going to be anyway

spk_0 So I just think I don't want to do the opening

spk_0 I think and I don't think I want to experience it and I think

spk_0 I think two things one I feel like it has a much shorter shelf life

spk_0 baked into it because it's like a

spk_0 Lot of people who are doing it are doing it because it's new and they want to try it

spk_0 Not because they think this is amazing and we should have this exist in the world

spk_0 Except chat gbt has the largest user base and I think that they literally call it the chat gbt moment for video

spk_0 And I don't think that the Sora app is going to be that I could be wrong

spk_0 But I do think it's possible that like the meta AI app if meta figures out how to make this happen

spk_0 Not just in an app that most people haven't downloaded

spk_0 Right because nobody's using the meta is anyone using the meta AI app?

spk_0 I hadn't downloaded until yesterday. I didn't realize it was a separate

spk_0 I don't use meta AI for anything except for I would just scroll through this

spk_0 I would scroll through things in the set. I don't know who's making them

spk_0 Right because I'm not going to but I would scroll through this like

spk_0 Some weird version of Chua Baka like flippin around like but what's nice about it is you're like nope

spk_0 I totally know all of this stuff

spk_0 And that's I think I was on dithering I think that then said this it's like the thing he likes about it is

spk_0 It moves it removes that mental calculation of is this real or is this fake and it's just all fake. I don't think okay

spk_0 So two things one

spk_0 I don't think we should remove that mental strain because we need that muscle for every other platform

spk_0 Like we need to be able to say

spk_0 This is real. This is not and we talked about media literature see a lot a Tyler Stalman

spk_0 He's been asking on social media who's talking about this we are that we have been yeah

spk_0 And I think I'm gonna invite him hopefully as a guest and to talk about it because he's a video creator in that way

spk_0 But one I

spk_0 Guess like you were saying people just want to scroll content

spk_0 That premise I think hits me deeply where I I don't want to believe that

spk_0 Like I understand on on some point people just need to take a break

spk_0 Whatever yet a long week hard day and you just want to scroll on social media

spk_0 Whether that's good or bad that let let that aside like I get that

spk_0 But if people don't even care what's on screen

spk_0 But just want to scroll something and so the fact that it's all I generated or not doesn't make a difference

spk_0 They're like troubles me on a level

spk_0 I guess because that's just like a change it feels like a change in the human psyche like

spk_0 Five years ago

spk_0 When like tiktok blew up because of COVID and everybody was at home

spk_0 I don't think it would have done as well like I feel like at that in that moment

spk_0 The reason why tiktok blew up is because people were craving human connection and also entertainment

spk_0 But it offered both

spk_0 It was both real humans

spk_0 You kind of felt this quasi connection because everyone's experiencing this lockdown together

spk_0 And it was in a format that people really responded to

spk_0 I think if tiktok and sora had come out at the same time right then during COVID sora would have lost

spk_0 Because if you had just said here's just a bunch of AI content or here's real people trying to do stuff at home

spk_0 I I want to believe that the human

spk_0 Like

spk_0 Psychie would have said yeah, I want the real people stuff not this

spk_0 And so now that we've been removed from it for several years and everyone's excited about AI and what it can do

spk_0 It feels like we've lost a little bit perspective of like oh yeah, we just want to scroll stuff

spk_0 And like I get it like there is like this human

spk_0 Like pull to be like if you're bored

spk_0 Or if you just want to laugh like you just reach for those platforms whether it's reals or tiktok or youtube shorts

spk_0 Like there's just like a destinctual action to do that

spk_0 And I don't think for that instinctual reaction to lean towards AI generated content in an infinite feed

spk_0 I think that is actually worse than the reaction going towards tiktok and Instagram reels

spk_0 I can't put my finger on exactly why but it just doesn't feel

spk_0 great

spk_0 And so when I see this scrolling feed of creators that I really love watching or people that recognize

spk_0 and I'm like

spk_0 I you know I get to see you in real life at tech events and talking about products and I like seeing that

spk_0 This is not a replacement. I don't even want this as a supplement to that like right

spk_0 I just I just want the real thing and so I guess I'm wondering on that base level

spk_0 Is this something that I don't know we're gonna be well and here's the thing

spk_0 So what these companies are doing is especially meta but obviously open AI as well

spk_0 But in what meta is very good at is identifying a space

spk_0 Where people have so for example like tiktok the space it filled was just idle time

spk_0 Okay, so then I'm at a put reels because it'll like hope we should

spk_0 Idol time is when people use social media apps entertainment whatever we need to we need to be in that space

spk_0 So they they identify a space then they figure out a way that they can be the one to fill that space right

spk_0 And it turns out that the cheapest way to fill that space is AI generated content right because YouTube

spk_0 It's really really expensive for YouTube to fill that space because they got to pay out half of the money to the creators

spk_0 Right Netflix is super expensive for them to fill that space

spk_0 Because they got to put out another Ryan Gosling movie or whatever like it's like you know

spk_0 Doing their octoncent like how many more do we get out of him right but it's expensive

spk_0 They got to pay the guy to show up and do all the things right AI content

spk_0 Yeah, there's there's servers doing server things and use like crunch and like yeah

spk_0 And boiling the ocean or whatever but like relatively speaking

spk_0 It's basically free the only limiting factor is power capacity right and we we have a lot of that

spk_0 So that's the thing and then the next step is what great

spk_0 We have a cheap way to fill that space which is literally all these companies care about is how do we be the place to especially if you're meta

spk_0 Because then we can show you ads and we can make money and whatever

spk_0 But that's not enough then they it's like we identified a habit the humans have right

spk_0 Which is to find a way to fill idle space the problem is then you then their goal is to expand that

spk_0 They are expanding the amount of time you spend with the idle space and filling it with this stuff

spk_0 And for them they have to keep doing that because that's the only way that you grow but that is

spk_0 proven over and over and over again to be super destructive to humanity

spk_0 It's like this thing that was a habit which was I stood in line waiting for a coffee

spk_0 Now I found something to fill that time now all I want to do is do that thing that I used to fill the time

spk_0 And I forgot that they even made my coffee now and I'm just standing here like a fool waiting for my coffee and I've scrolled 14 videos

spk_0 Because I've been standing here for so long and then I'm late for work and then I lost my job

spk_0 And so now I have a lot of idle time that I can spend watching stuff like

spk_0 Like seriously like I know that's a little bit hypermole but not actually that much right like it's yeah

spk_0 It's the same thing that happens to someone who becomes addicted to like drugs

spk_0 Well that

spk_0 There's also

spk_0 Well, we'll move on but good like the I'm happy for that to be the last word

spk_0 The dopamine or serotonin hijacking that you hear about a lot where like

spk_0 The quick hit that these short form video platforms provide kind of throws off

spk_0 Your body's ability to generate that serotonin with like normal things

spk_0 Yeah, like a cup of coffee that you made yourself and enjoying that looking at your backyard

spk_0 Which people think are a I generated anyway

spk_0 Like which is actually now that I think about it kind of hilarious

spk_0 Kind of hilarious like that is the thing like what you did in real life

spk_0 Is one of those moments where your mind should like get a little hit of serotonin

spk_0 Because you did like an enjoyable thing and you're

spk_0 Taking a moment and having the space and people were like not say I generated it kind of is like the perfect encapsulation of like

spk_0 I think what is happening

spk_0 Right people just don't they don't see and I just mentioned this because it hit me

spk_0 And this will be a video I put in the show notes

spk_0 But the Harvard business a school did this video about

spk_0 What they did a study about boredom and why you need to be bored

spk_0 Kind of all the benefits that boredom provides both to your mind and to your mental health

spk_0 But also to creativity and even productivity. It's a short video. It's like five minutes or something

spk_0 But it just it made me think like one

spk_0 We I think we have enough things to scroll

spk_0 And I understand like that's that's antithetical to like all of these companies making more products and releasing more things and wanting more attention

spk_0 Like the economy today is attention and I'm part of it. I have a YouTube channel

spk_0 Like I totally I totally get it everyone wants your attention, but

spk_0 I think it's always about the value you provide and I still stand by like when I scroll

spk_0 Instagram 90% of what I get now are recipes

spk_0 Because I'm trying to do high protein whatever recipes and like there is a value there

spk_0 Am I doing it in those dull moments of the day? Yes

spk_0 Do I get some value of it that does translate to real life? Yes, and I think that value could be entertainment like

spk_0 Enjoying a funny video with your kids or your family like I think that could be valuable

spk_0 If it's someone giving life and buy whatever like their kid there is value there

spk_0 Tiktok is the same thing. I think there's lots of amazing creators providing lots of value there

spk_0 I don't see value in these like the Sora app or the meta AI app aside from pure

spk_0 It's not even entered. I mean it's entertaining. I guess, but I don't even put it in that category because I would rather watch

spk_0 Some guy talk about

spk_0 Like in real life be funny in a tiktok or an Instagram reel

spk_0 Then see these videos

spk_0 Yes, they are technically impressive. Sora too has gotten way better

spk_0 I don't I don't think I want it and maybe I'm and maybe I'm an old man shouting at a cloud right now, but it just doesn't it doesn't feel like it's good

spk_0 As like you know, you know what I mean?

spk_0 Yeah, and the good news by the way is that and this is why these companies try so hard to keep you engaged

spk_0 Is that it turns out that your brain is super resilient and that it can only takes a couple days or a week to start to generate different

spk_0 Pathways so if you put down your device not your you know, I'm not saying don't use your iPhone

spk_0 I'm saying if you didn't open the tiktok got tick-tock app. That's surprisingly hard to say for a week

spk_0 It would be much easier to just never open it again, right?

spk_0 Like I don't even have the I know I don't miss tiktok because my brain is not wired to look at it

spk_0 I don't have it on my phone like I just never used tiktok

spk_0 And if you found yourself like I'm taking too much time doing this

spk_0 Your brain like within a month your brain can completely rewire that those pathways

spk_0 Yeah, and how and fill them with better things right?

spk_0 So like it is not a lost cause. It's just those companies are so good at keeping you from

spk_0 It's like it was a mark vending off who's like Facebook is the new nicked or new cigarette right

spk_0 Anyway, I'll I'm not gonna I took the mid-AI app off my phone because I was like I don't need or want this

spk_0 Everything's gonna be tracked for advertising anyway. I'm gonna delete this. I'll delete that one

spk_0 I'm gonna keep the Sora app

spk_0 But man, I don't I don't know

spk_0 I'd probably say the m5 macbook pro, but which one would I'm actually gonna buy none?

spk_0 So I'm not gonna buy that. I've been really happy with my m4 macbook air and

spk_0 Sometimes I've been like oh, maybe I should go back to a macbook pro for when I'm traveling

spk_0 But then I'm like I don't do it off and enough to really care so I don't know

spk_0 I'm I'm most excited about the apple tv 4k and hold that's not gonna

spk_0 I'm five in it. I know hypothetically yes if the m5 ipad pro

spk_0 With this smartfully with a smart folio yes, yes, are you buying one? Yeah, probably

spk_0 Probably would would you

spk_0 I'm still using the m2 because I love this thing so much that's true

spk_0 Yeah, and the only the only downside to it is that it doesn't have the tandem all it

spk_0 Right because of m2 ipad pro

spk_0 Plenty fast enough for anything that I use an ipad pro for I also well

spk_0 I'm gonna save it for the personal tech segment, but I got problems with ipad it was yeah, we'll talk about it

spk_0 You know we'll get to that one. We'll get to the second

spk_0 Uh Adobe Premiere like the real premiere not premiere rush came out for iPhone

spk_0 So if you wanted to use it. It's actually free. You don't need a subscription to use it

spk_0 You can use the zoby premiere on iphone right now to edit videos

spk_0 That's pretty wild again taking on cap cap

spk_0 I've actually been using as much as I've bad talked meta about their AI app

spk_0 I use the edits app to just add captions to my vertical videos because it's really good at that

spk_0 And so that's what I do it's free. Oh, but now yeah, maybe I'll try to do premiere. We'll see

spk_0 Apple might be pausing

spk_0 lighter vision pro which might have been a vision air or whatever

spk_0 To work and prioritize on meta like AI glasses the meta

spk_0 new ray bands with display

spk_0 Was out or came out for pre-order

spk_0 September 30th, which was this past Tuesday. I tried to schedule a demo at Best Buy none were available

spk_0 I don't know if that's because it's popular or if the best buy doesn't know what that is and so it's not letting me schedule it

spk_0 Uh, but yeah, maybe we won't see a cheaper lighter vision something for a while

spk_0 There's rumor that we'll see an m5 apple vision pro

spk_0 That would be another question of like what I upgrade to that

spk_0 I don't think so I just updated my vision pro to vision was 26 like yesterday

spk_0 so

spk_0 Did you have you updated your vision pro?

spk_0 Uh, no

spk_0 I have not up well wait. I have it's got 26 running on it

spk_0 But it's not it's not I haven't updated it since 26 came out

spk_0 Okay, yeah, well you then you did it before me. I just didn't I just I put it on there. I did not run the beta on it

spk_0 Mostly because the apple vision pro still is like finicky in ways that I felt like adding another variable of finickyness

spk_0 Which is putting a beta on it?

spk_0 I still don't understand why it takes 14 minutes sometimes to convince it to turn on that doesn't make sense to me

spk_0 It's just got it up, you know an m2 processor in there like you also find it takes longer to connect to Wi-Fi like to actually get internet

spk_0 That I don't have a that doesn't seem well. I don't think that's a problem

spk_0 But I just don't understand the sequence of things I'm supposed to do to make it turn on

spk_0 Sometimes especially if you just leave a sitting in the battery goes down. It's like I put okay

spk_0 I'll plug it out. I don't need to use this right now. I'll plug it in and half an hour later I come back and I'm like

spk_0 We good you awake?

spk_0 We get what do you need? How do I get to go? I do a sternal rubber? I need to get you to wake up

spk_0 What am I supposed to do? Smelling salts you got to give it smelling salt something we all right personal tech segment

spk_0 I was combined

spk_0 Finally complained about it. I don't like windowing an iPadOS now. Here's the thing

spk_0 This was universally loved I thought and

spk_0 I'm glad windowing is there for all the people who wanted windowing on iPad

spk_0 Now that I mean I've been using it for almost four months now

spk_0 It's the iPad is the first one I put on the developer beta back in June

spk_0 But June, July, August, September who we're not over now. We're using it for four months

spk_0 I don't care for the windowing I

spk_0 Using 11 inch iPad. Maybe that has something to do with it

spk_0 But it's just I find it to be a little too

spk_0 Finicky to manage the windows. I also don't use the magic keyboard by default

spk_0 It's better with the keyboard, but anyway

spk_0 The one thing I'm just bemoaning is the fact that we can't easily do split view when windowing is disabled

spk_0 And this is why I think I'm gonna make a video about this

spk_0 but

spk_0 One of the things is you have to turn like windowing on or off

spk_0 Stage manager on or off those are two different things and I understand they're why and they're different

spk_0 But it it feels like too many

spk_0 Things to turn on or off when it comes to windows and also if you turn that all off

spk_0 So windowing is off and stage manager is off

spk_0 All you can do is full screen apps and nothing else

spk_0 And all I want to be able to do Jason and this I don't think this fix anybody else

spk_0 The only thing I'm the one thing I miss what I did all the time

spk_0 Is I would have a full screen app open? Okay, maybe I'm taking notes or whatever

spk_0 And I just want to be able to swipe up where the dock is which you can still do that

spk_0 You can still swap up where the dock is

spk_0 I just want to be able to tap and drag an app

spk_0 To the side to activate split view

spk_0 And that does nothing and even with windowing on

spk_0 That does nothing so I'll enable windowing

spk_0 I'll now swipe up the dock

spk_0 I will take Safari to try to split view it

spk_0 And nothing it just opens full screen and then you have to resize the window first

spk_0 I can't just oh no, I guess I can drag and flick it over to the side to go to that 50-50 view

spk_0 But I don't I don't prefer it all

spk_0 And I will challenge because people were asking me like oh people complain about not having windowing for years

spk_0 And now they're complaining you don't and now they have it

spk_0 You can go out there's lots of hours of my voice on the internet

spk_0 I don't think I ever complained

spk_0 That I or asked for windowing specifically

spk_0 I asked for my input on the iPad

spk_0 I asked for like

spk_0 Background audio input and stuff like that and that's all now in iPad. I was 26 and that's great

spk_0 I've said that's great. I never asked for windowing

spk_0 So I don't think this applies to that applies to me

spk_0 But also I

spk_0 I wish I could just do that thing even if if it was a windowing feature

spk_0 To quickly be able to take an app from the dock

spk_0 Flick it over into split view so that whole screen app I already have on screen and the app

spk_0 I'm dragging go 50-50 with one movement

spk_0 That would be nice because right now it takes you have to resize the open app

spk_0 Click that over

spk_0 Open the second app

spk_0 Resize that or try to drag it around and flick it off to the side and no there's no slide over

spk_0 Which most people bemoaned the idea that slide over is gone so

spk_0 The way I use my iPad up until this point

spk_0 I miss the way it worked when it came to that split view

spk_0 That's all I want to say

spk_0 So basically what you're saying is Apple is the new Facebook

spk_0 What does that even mean? What are you talking about?

spk_0 They're changing the way you've always used a product and forcing you to use it a different way because they think that it's better

spk_0 And you know for the previous way

spk_0 Yeah, I only see that I can't the only reason they made that is like like literally that was the first thing

spk_0 I wrote that you took issue with and that's how we met

spk_0 What literally wrote an article that says Apple is the new Facebook

spk_0 Oh, yeah, I remember that article. Yeah, but I mean the side that is but you missed the reference

spk_0 I did I'm sorry thinking about it the whole time

spk_0 I'm like wait we literally just said this about reels being the first day. I know it's in the Instagram app. Sorry

spk_0 I was I was reading myself to defend my viewpoints and so I

spk_0 I feel like the one miss here none of the things you said I care about because

spk_0 Sorry, even if I was saying that I realize that because there is an easy workaround

spk_0 You just don't like the workaround which is like the thing where you and it's not nearly as hard to just drag it over and put the next app next

spk_0 Or because you can put them in any ratio you want now before you were limited to like a third or a half or four or whatever

spk_0 So that's not that big a deal to have to you can still have two windows next to each other like that's totally doable

spk_0 The slide over is the thing that's terrible the fact that you no longer have slide over and I just think Apple didn't consider the

spk_0 fact that

spk_0 You could combine these two metaphors and maybe you just can't maybe there's not a good way to make that

spk_0 Those two things work and maybe it would make the experience of it even worse

spk_0 But you can definitely just put two windows next to each other and you can actually have more flexibility on doing that now

spk_0 You are right

spk_0 It is not as automatic like snap two thing as it was before

spk_0 But my guess is that it's a thing that you will get very good at doing if you care about it and you won't you won't

spk_0 I mean like I mean that for real like you'll just get good at doing that and you won't care as much in a couple weeks

spk_0 I mean I can I can do it

spk_0 One is just more taps to get to the same like if my goal is I want two apps side-by-side 50 50

spk_0 It takes way more taps to make that than it did before starting from scratch

spk_0 And I have a shortcut that

spk_0 Opens two apps each in 50 50 and that's fine

spk_0 But I also feel like I'm getting less of the app because now the rounded corners are so rounded and there's like a just more space around them

spk_0 I prefer how it looked and functioned with the 50 50 and I think

spk_0 For the 11 inch iPad and smaller

spk_0 I don't know maybe maybe I prefer that old split view so I don't know and I understand you can have like different stages

spk_0 And it just it feels like a lot and I use a bunch of windows on my Mac all the time

spk_0 Like I have like 10 windows open on my main Mac desktop and I use multiple spaces

spk_0 So like I'm used to that on my Mac and I don't know just the way that I have functioned on the iPad for years

spk_0 It's not jiving with the new windowing system

spk_0 And I guess I don't do

spk_0 I mean I edit a podcast every day on the iPad. I use it every day

spk_0 But I don't use it for hours every day and I don't

spk_0 Usually manage tons of windows. I have like fairite and bear or I have like safari and bear and that's kind of it

spk_0 You know that's basically what I'm doing at it. So

spk_0 So you know what I actually like better about it. Okay, I'm just gonna tie this and I'll see what you think

spk_0 I don't want two apps side by side

spk_0 Okay, okay, what I do want is to be easily able to go between two apps

spk_0 And I actually think that this is better because it's more like the Mac

spk_0 What I do on the Mac and I have this right now. I have two brave windows

spk_0 Yeah, and they sort of overlap each other like this

spk_0 Yes, so that I can just click real quickly on one or the other and they both show up

spk_0 But I want more screen on my Mac than I would have if I had them actually next to each other

spk_0 Mostly because I'd be looking like this all the time at our video if I was doing that and doing that on the iPad pro or and on any

spk_0 iPad at this point in iiPad OS 26 is much better than it because you couldn't do that with side by side

spk_0 So I actually prefer as like I have two windows that are both like

spk_0 70% and they just sort of they just sort of overlap a little bit and you can just easily go back and forth

spk_0 To me that's a much better working situation

spk_0 So I do that all the time too like I have notion brave. I have my safari tab group for screen sharing and like

spk_0 They're all the corners are showing or peeking out so I can quickly bring any of the windows to the front

spk_0 And I want that on my Mac I feel like on an 11 inch iPad screen

spk_0 The size that windows have to be in order to have that kind of

spk_0 Tapability the windows are then unusably small

spk_0 No, no, not even you're

spk_0 There's a slightly different version of it which is that you I basically just I was just making sure I don't have any emails in here that I care about

spk_0 But I basically just have them like they're both like 60%

spk_0 And I can just tap one or tap the other one so they're both like next to each other

spk_0 But they just overlap in the middle yeah

spk_0 I see so I have like as much screen as I need I got like 60% of each so it's almost like you got two two thirds at like like

spk_0 Exactly, yeah, and I can just tap on one or tap on the other one so yeah

spk_0 Do you keep those two apps like in a stage by itself so you can always go back to it?

spk_0 No, I don't know and I literally just open two apps so I could show you this like on this right now

spk_0 There wasn't anything open. I just opened you list these and email and then head to make sure I didn't have any

spk_0 So but I do have my receipt from St. Jude so that's good so but typically

spk_0 You have to kind of set that up every time you open your iPad like drag the app resize it drag the second app resize it

spk_0 Now you have it. I don't think about doing that so it must be that like those apps are pretty pretty commonly in the or because it's it remembers for me

spk_0 John really if I

spk_0 If I just open my iPad I have things open and I might move on. I just don't think about it as much

spk_0 I think I just I think I'm this is not an anyway of criticism

spk_0 I think I'm just using my iPad and doing whatever I have to do to do it and I'm not thinking like

spk_0 Oh, I need I

spk_0 And you do it a little different because you I mean other than I had a different podcast

spk_0 On my iPad consistently once a week and that's just full screen. I don't need anything else right

spk_0 Every other time I'm using my iPad I'm typically doing something a little bit different each time

spk_0 So like maybe I have safari and Ulysses open because I'm writing something or maybe I have

spk_0 You know my email and Slack open because I'm just triaging garbage that came in throughout the day

spk_0 And I think maybe that's different because I I typically use full screen apps

spk_0 80% of the time it's either fair right and I'm editing

spk_0 Or it's bear and I'm writing

spk_0 And then 20% of the time I want bear and safari open at the same time

spk_0 So I can like take notes and do research or I want fair right and bear open because I'm recording

spk_0 The Daily Show and I need the notes on the side and so for me I go between the full screen version of an app and wanting this

spk_0 Displit view it a lot and that feels like it's harder to do

spk_0 Go between the idea like a full screen and split view and back and forth

spk_0 Often because then it doesn't save my position

spk_0 Like if I split if I drag the window and make bear 50%

spk_0 But then the next time I open bear I want it to be full screen

spk_0 It's I have to either change that or resize it so anyway. I don't know I

spk_0 I'll have to think about it more, but I'm gonna make a video because I don't

spk_0 Yeah, I don't know. I'm not used to it yet

spk_0 That's all

spk_0 And I think I think I like the previous flip you better but anyway
