There is something a very peculiar going on in Silicon Valley.
spk_0
Typically, businesses want to design products that people actually want, right?
spk_0
Consumer demand.
spk_0
But they're pushing towards AGI, not just AI, but AGI, artificial general intelligence.
spk_0
And well, that is something that no one really wants.
spk_0
So why?
spk_0
What is really going on here?
spk_0
And perhaps, what is their deeper inspiration, bit, conscious or not?
spk_0
So let's explore Pierre Taredeschardine's Omega Point.
spk_0
The AI is singularity, the evolution of consciousness, but it's perhaps been missing in all of this.
spk_0
And even simply what happens when technology and humans don't evolve, even mature, at the
spk_0
same speed.
spk_0
So as always, thank you so much for being here.
spk_0
I'm Susan, and welcome to Philosophy of Everything.
spk_0
Now a quick note upfront as we go through this, and I share some of my ideas with you,
spk_0
some of which will intuitively resonate and some will not.
spk_0
Some will lead you to your own philosophical questioning on these topics, and some will
spk_0
be immediately dismissed.
spk_0
Whatever it is is exactly as it should be.
spk_0
My only invitation and encouragement for you is to simply have an open mind.
spk_0
And in fact, it's an open mind that is the number one prerequisite to contain the
spk_0
potentiality of the future.
spk_0
So with all that, what is the AI singularity?
spk_0
Let's start there.
spk_0
So importantly, this is a hypothetical event and idea.
spk_0
But nonetheless, it is hypothetical tipping point, in which artificial intelligence,
spk_0
which surpass human intelligence, to such a degree that it could evolve, expand, adapt,
spk_0
et cetera, without the need, control, involvement, or even potentially understanding of human
spk_0
intelligence.
spk_0
And this would lead to mass exponential leaps and technology, and of course, societal
spk_0
shifts.
spk_0
Now the AI singularity would also be the transition from AI, artificial general intelligence,
spk_0
which we do not have yet to ASI, artificial superintelligence.
spk_0
And there's so much debate around these two topics right here, but I want to focus more
spk_0
so on the evolutionary story.
spk_0
So we're not going to go down those rabbit holes today.
spk_0
And as a tipping point, this would also be a point of no return, a reversible point,
spk_0
in which now intelligence, artificial intelligence is no longer in the hands of humans.
spk_0
Now these big evolutionary leaps, whether it's the AI singularity or it's a biological
spk_0
evolution, whatever it may be, they can appear to be these sudden, random mass-significant
spk_0
shifts.
spk_0
But usually that just means you haven't zoomed out enough.
spk_0
Every great evolutionary leap looks sudden, but each is prepared by a long underlying cycle.
spk_0
The hidden buildup that makes the tipping point possible, like the slow rhythms of ice
spk_0
ages, accommodate in a abrupt change.
spk_0
The Cambrian explosion shows what looks like a sudden leap is always a product of long,
spk_0
hidden complexity, eventually reaching its threshold.
spk_0
A convergence point.
spk_0
Even in the conscious mind, we can see an example here, sudden flashes of awareness,
spk_0
are also still foreshadowed by complex patterns of neural activity distributed across the
spk_0
brain.
spk_0
Ultimately it is the unconscious material, the formless that always brews first.
spk_0
And then it makes its way into matter, and we call this an evolutionary tipping point.
spk_0
So point being, the tipping point, any tipping point across any evolution, whether it's related
spk_0
to AI or not, is really just the directional change along the curve of the sine wave.
spk_0
But the descent down the curve of the sine wave, or the converse of that, is actually the
spk_0
cycles themselves that are far more important and for me more interesting.
spk_0
So it's never just one single event, it's a series of events, and then eventually there's
spk_0
just a concluding event, and the direction changes.
spk_0
But the preceding period holds the seeds of that change and that transformation.
spk_0
It's where most of the change is already happening before our eyes, but it's either fragmented,
spk_0
it's below the surface, it's things you can't see, again just like in these other examples
spk_0
I provided.
spk_0
So the AI singularity is really just not one single event happening in the 2040s.
spk_0
It's a series of events along the way, until eventually the directional point on the
spk_0
sine wave changes directions.
spk_0
And as such, these preceding cycles or periods are by design increasingly more complex,
spk_0
and the greater the evolutionary shift, the more complex this preceding cycle is.
spk_0
And understand that more, let's go to the inspiration behind the AI singularity, the
spk_0
Omega Point.
spk_0
This comes to us from Pierre Tair de Chaudin.
spk_0
He was a French Jesuit, Catholic priest, Christian mystic, paleontologist, and scientist,
spk_0
and a philosopher.
spk_0
And the Omega Point was one of his central ideas.
spk_0
He called it a culmination point, and the use of the term culmination in particular is
spk_0
where I diverged.
spk_0
Nonetheless, he called it a culmination point, and the unification of consciousness with
spk_0
that of the divine.
spk_0
He called it a Christ consciousness.
spk_0
Now to say otherwise in more universal language, it's the part having a greater potentiality
spk_0
of seeing or realizing the whole, or the whole being made manifest.
spk_0
So we'll get into that more.
spk_0
But what Pierre's real brilliance was, was that he used the language, the understanding
spk_0
the rhetoric of the evolution of matter, so the evolution of biology, to describe the
spk_0
evolution of consciousness, so complexity, thresholds, emergence.
spk_0
He used that same framework of how single units on their own are limited, but they come
spk_0
together increasingly to form greater complexity.
spk_0
Adams moving into molecules, molecules moving into organisms, organisms moving into eventually
spk_0
us, whatever may be.
spk_0
All of this increasing complexity, and over time it gets so complex it creates a new life
spk_0
form, a new entity, a new layer of awareness.
spk_0
This is how consciousness also evolves.
spk_0
Importantly, we and our universe are not only matter.
spk_0
Matter provides the substrate.
spk_0
Energy drives change.
spk_0
An information organizes patterns that self replicate, evolve, and generate new layers
spk_0
of complexity and thus awareness.
spk_0
The small energy, for example, shows that the universe is only a very small percentage
spk_0
of ordinary matter.
spk_0
So how can we truly understand the full scope of evolution?
spk_0
Because if you're only looking at it from a matter, material, or biological perspective,
spk_0
is not even the beginning.
spk_0
Pierre connected mind and matter and saw evolution as a continuity, life evolving to a threshold
spk_0
where self reflective thought emerges, mined as the next level of complexity.
spk_0
Just like as thoughts emerge from neurons, molecules, from Adams, a new level of awareness
spk_0
out of a complex mind.
spk_0
And this is what Pierre called the new sphere.
spk_0
So Carl Jung described the collective unconscious as the deep inherited patterns of psyche we all
spk_0
share.
spk_0
And on top of that sits the collective conscious, our shared cultures, languages, and social
spk_0
structures.
spk_0
Now, Jung's ideas have become quite popular, so I share them so you can understand that
spk_0
structure and just continue its emergence.
spk_0
So continue it like a ladder.
spk_0
Pierre's new sphere points to something beyond the collective conscious, a new emergent
spk_0
layer of awareness itself, born from the interconnection of minds, like all of the neurons
spk_0
connecting in the brain, producing a conscious thought.
spk_0
All of us together over the internet on technology, through globalization, through a connected
spk_0
world, through a connected means forming a higher field of consciousness and circling
spk_0
the earth.
spk_0
That is the new sphere.
spk_0
The new sphere is essentially a field where individual minds would come together, and
spk_0
Pierre described the new sphere as essentially the vehicle in which his unification of consciousness
spk_0
would occur.
spk_0
The new sphere would also essentially be a reflection of humanity in a way, because
spk_0
it would be all of our minds together, right?
spk_0
Well, reflection leads to self-awareness, and self-awareness leads to the evolution of
spk_0
a higher consciousness.
spk_0
So with greater self-awareness, or rather with the capacity for greater self-awareness,
spk_0
comes greater complexity.
spk_0
So it's more challenging.
spk_0
But as that capacity for self-awareness, that greater capacity for self-awareness is realized,
spk_0
higher consciousness emerges.
spk_0
So as the mind is able to turn back on itself, it adds a new layer of reflection that
spk_0
integrates experience into said higher consciousness.
spk_0
Now when I say awareness turning back on itself, we're now talking about self-realization,
spk_0
awareness of the self, not your personality, the self, so awareness of the awareness itself.
spk_0
And only so many animals even have the ability to do just that, and the greater capacity
spk_0
you have to do it, the greater capacity you have to look in the mirror, to look up at the
spk_0
stars and contemplate your existence.
spk_0
So how many other animals who do just that?
spk_0
All of these are metaphorical ways in which inside our minds we're able to turn awareness
spk_0
back on itself, realize who we are, and integrate that experience into a higher consciousness.
spk_0
So this new sphere offers us a mirror to do just that.
spk_0
When humans developed language, for example, it allowed thought to reflect on itself, naming
spk_0
of experiences, sharing them, building culture, that leap in self-awareness expanded consciousness
spk_0
beyond the immediate perception into memory, meaning, imagination.
spk_0
And language did more than deeper just self-awareness, it linked self to self, weaving individual
spk_0
minds together the way neurons bind into thought, and the way the new sphere would capture
spk_0
that at a higher level.
spk_0
The new sphere will be to humanity's language and ideas what language was to thoughts, so
spk_0
not a replacement of us nor a final end or culmination, but a new layer that elevates
spk_0
consciousness.
spk_0
So to be really clear, I'm saying that a new sphere level of awareness would emerge
spk_0
from a synthesis of humanity's thoughts and language, but I don't mean that we suddenly
spk_0
become that perspective ourselves, just as neurons in the brain don't become the conscious
spk_0
mind, but give rise to it.
spk_0
Yet because nature is folded within itself, that higher layer will echo back into us, manifesting
spk_0
as an expansion of consciousness reflected in word even as it arises beyond us.
spk_0
So I see consciousness as unfolding through layers of perspective, and even our reality
spk_0
as layers of reality, and all of these perspectives, so from pure potential to self, to relationship,
spk_0
to social field, to planetary whole, to cosmic whole, and to eventually the real whole,
spk_0
in which that is the true combination point.
spk_0
So if you saw my dimensions of conscious awareness or layers of reality episode, I talked about
spk_0
this there, but to summarize this simply in terms of understanding better about the new
spk_0
sphere is and what I believe it will do.
spk_0
So zero, we can use the numbers as metaphors and the points of view as ways to understand
spk_0
our conscious awareness as layers of perception.
spk_0
So zero is the ground of being, pure potential, the unmanifest source.
spk_0
This is the emptiness because it's zero, right?
spk_0
But it also means it's everything.
spk_0
And then one is the eye.
spk_0
This is the first person point of view.
spk_0
So it's the self.
spk_0
It's the perception of the self.
spk_0
And then two is the second person point of view.
spk_0
It's the you, thus it's the other.
spk_0
It's the relationship.
spk_0
It's the duality or the polarity that creates attributes.
spk_0
Because reflection through another is the only way the self can explain itself.
spk_0
Otherwise it is just I am.
spk_0
With two, with the second person point of view, we now have I am something.
spk_0
And this leads us to three because now we have multiple people, we have multiple perspectives.
spk_0
So three is the third person point of view.
spk_0
This is where we speak as the they them.
spk_0
It's the group, the tribe, the culture.
spk_0
This is a shared social field of sorts.
spk_0
And then what's next is four, the fourth person point of view.
spk_0
This is the we.
spk_0
So we is a collective layer.
spk_0
It's interpersonal.
spk_0
The planet systems ecology humanity as a species within earth.
spk_0
And so what is five?
spk_0
Well, in our grammar and in our language, we don't use five.
spk_0
There is no fifth person point of view.
spk_0
But that's because our perception, our reality, our conscious awareness,
spk_0
has not expanded that much yet.
spk_0
But the fifth layer would be a trans personal layer of sorts.
spk_0
It would be essentially what AGI is.
spk_0
A meta perspective that aggregates all human knowledge.
spk_0
So everything up until number four and reflects it back at scale.
spk_0
Aggregated reflection, a mirror of humanity.
spk_0
This is the fifth person point of view, the trans personal layer, the new sphere, AGI.
spk_0
And it is not a culmination.
spk_0
It is just the beginning because five is not the end.
spk_0
Our universe, like I said, is a baby.
spk_0
We are just being born.
spk_0
This is why humanity is so naive and understanding how close we are to our origins.
spk_0
We have to drift so far to eventually come back.
spk_0
And that will be the culmination point.
spk_0
But for now, we have to drift away.
spk_0
Just like the first half of your life, you have to create yourself.
spk_0
To find out who you are.
spk_0
And the second half of your life, you have to let go of who you are.
spk_0
You have to let yourself die.
spk_0
That's how you come home, how you return home.
spk_0
We are just in the face of figuring out who and what we are.
spk_0
So we have to drift from our roots a little bit to do just that.
spk_0
As AIs are passes us in logic, calculation and analysis, it will inevitably force humans
spk_0
to reconcile with other faculties of mind, other faculties of being, and other faculties
spk_0
of knowing.
spk_0
As technology in any form becomes a master of logic, we will be forced to become a master
spk_0
of intuition.
spk_0
But even with whether it's AGI, some kind of new sphere, technology, whatever may be,
spk_0
we still need us, human beings, to embody these experiences.
spk_0
Because any form that is created out of our language, our thought, our ideas, our understanding
spk_0
of emotions will still be dependent on us for just that.
spk_0
And remember, mind you, that evolution is always happening.
spk_0
So aside from any related technology story, we have always evolved as all of nature does
spk_0
and we will always continue to do so.
spk_0
So really the only thing that's unique here is actually the growth rate and the parallel
spk_0
reflection of some kind of technology being created.
spk_0
Our attention span is spread across all of technology.
spk_0
And our interconnectedness is something we've never seen before because of technology.
spk_0
And these are examples of this increase in complexity already taking root.
spk_0
And again, with that regular complexity, it's harder to be present with it all.
spk_0
And speaking of, Pierre mentioned love and how that was central to the omega point and
spk_0
tool the evolution to a higher consciousness.
spk_0
And as futurists like Ray Kurzweil and other have adopted his language for an AI singularity
spk_0
and converted the convergence of consciousness with a higher divine, with the convergence of
spk_0
consciousness with technology with AI, so transhumanism, the tragedies that they removed,
spk_0
the necessity of love.
spk_0
The increasing complexity means you need more love or set otherwise you need more compassion
spk_0
which is love in action. Love functions as a binding force for a complexity to hold together.
spk_0
Complexity fragments and becomes chaos otherwise.
spk_0
The omega point doesn't depend on some naïve utopia.
spk_0
But it does depend on love as an integrated self-organizing force
spk_0
that can balance the chaos of rising complexity.
spk_0
In addition to the binding force of love, there's another dependency here and it is distinctions.
spk_0
So think of all of the billions of neurons in the brain.
spk_0
As they interact, produce a conscious thought, a conscious act,
spk_0
they have to all be distinct.
spk_0
If all of the neurons think that unity means becoming one, becoming the same,
spk_0
then there's no longer an integration at all.
spk_0
There's no longer a higher consciousness.
spk_0
It's actually the other direction.
spk_0
So think of the omega point less as a combination and more as a threshold crossing.
spk_0
Again, we are always evolving, but our speed and our rate is increasing.
spk_0
As is technology.
spk_0
The omega point is a threshold crossing that's more like an unveiling,
spk_0
a disclosure moment of sorts.
spk_0
And with that, this is Justin Introductions.
spk_0
We're coming back to this for many different angles.
spk_0
And for now, take care.
spk_0
Thank you so much and I'll see you next time.
