Hello, this is six-minute English from BBCLearningEnglish.
spk_0
I'm Phil.
spk_0
And I'm Georgie.
spk_0
Encountering an animal in its natural habitat is a magical experience.
spk_0
Have you ever seen an animal in the wild Georgie?
spk_0
Yes, I have actually. I was on a walk and we saw a baby badger.
spk_0
It was on its own and it was really cute.
spk_0
What about you Phil?
spk_0
Well, the most impressive one I've ever seen is actually a whale.
spk_0
I was driving by the coast in Patagonia and you could see them in the sea.
spk_0
Well, that sounds amazing.
spk_0
And funny you say that because whale watching has become popular in many coastal parts of the world.
spk_0
But watching whales is very different from what humans used to do,
spk_0
hunt and kill them for their oil and meat,
spk_0
an activity known as wailing.
spk_0
Last year marked the 40th anniversary of the International Wailing Commission's
spk_0
Global Moratorium.
spk_0
That's a temporary ban on the commercial killing of whales.
spk_0
Although Japan, Iceland and Norway continue to hunt whales,
spk_0
there's no doubt the ban has saved many whale species from extinction.
spk_0
In this programme we'll discuss our past and present relationship with these giants of the ocean.
spk_0
And as usual, we'll learn some useful new words and phrases too.
spk_0
Plus you'll find all the vocabulary for this episode
spk_0
along with a quiz and worksheet on our website,
spk_0

spk_0
But first I have a question for you Georgie.
spk_0
You probably know that the world's largest whale is the blue whale
spk_0
growing up to 30 meters long.
spk_0
But which whale species is the smallest?
spk_0
Is it a the beluga whale, b the vakita whale or c the pygmy right whale?
spk_0
Well pygmy makes me think small so I'm going to go with c the pygmy right whale.
spk_0
Okay we'll find out later in the programme.
spk_0
Humans have hunted whales for at least a thousand years,
spk_0
starting with small groups of hunters in slow moving wooden boats.
spk_0
Catching whales like this was often unsuccessful,
spk_0
especially big whales like blue and humpback whales,
spk_0
which can swim up to 30 kilometers per hour.
spk_0
But all that changed in the late 1800s as Jane Pius of the South Georgia Heritage Trust
spk_0
explained to bbc radio 4 programme rare earth.
spk_0
Something happened in Norway in the late 1800s,
spk_0
a chap called Sven Boine who was a whaleer.
spk_0
He invented what we now know as the exploding harpoon.
spk_0
And that was a turning point for the whale, the whale can stand a chance.
spk_0
In 1870 a chap, that's an informal word for a man called Sven Boine,
spk_0
invented the exploding harpoon, a weapon for killing whales.
spk_0
This was a turning point.
spk_0
The phrase turning point means a time when a situation starts to change,
spk_0
especially in a positive way, although sadly not in this case.
spk_0
After this the whales didn't stand a chance,
spk_0
meaning they had no chance of successfully avoiding the hunters.
spk_0
Foyne's exploding harpoon added to the invention of faster steam-powered boats,
spk_0
increased whaling massively throughout the 20th century.
spk_0
So the point where over 3 million whales had been killed,
spk_0
and many species faced extinction.
spk_0
By the 1970s there were only a few great whales left.
spk_0
An environmental groups like Greenpeace started the Save the Whales campaign
spk_0
to make people aware of devastation in whale populations and the cruelty of whaling.
spk_0
It became popular to listen to the song of the whale,
spk_0
recordings of whales communicating at sea, which sounds something like this.
spk_0
Here's marine biologist Joe Roman discussing the Save the Whales campaign with BBC Radio 4's
spk_0
Brea Earth. People started to think about whales in different ways,
spk_0
and then we have to give a shout out to activists groups like Greenpeace,
spk_0
who put their ribboats, they put their zodiacs in between Soviet,
spk_0
hunting vessels and sperm whales, and they were very good at media.
spk_0
Joe gives a shout out to Greenpeace activists for protecting whales.
spk_0
To give a shout out to someone means to praise them in public.
spk_0
Videos and photos taken by Greenpeace changed public opinion about whaling.
spk_0
Joe says Greenpeace work good at media, meaning they skillfully used media outlets like TV
spk_0
and newspapers to convey their message to the public.
spk_0
Many whale species are still endangered,
spk_0
and all whales still face danger from ocean acidification and plastic pollution.
spk_0
But the moratorium, that means the temporary suspension on hunting them,
spk_0
has lasted 40 years, and hopefully will help protect whales for decades more.
spk_0
Okay Phil, isn't it time you revealed the answer to your question?
spk_0
Okay, I asked you which was the smallest species of whale.
spk_0
And I said the pygmy right whale, didn't I?
spk_0
You did. Unfortunately the answer is actually the vacuita whale,
spk_0
which is about 1.5 meters long.
spk_0
Oh, so cute. Okay, let's recap the rest of the vocabulary we've learned.
spk_0
A chap is an informal word for a man.
spk_0
A turning point is when a situation starts to change,
spk_0
especially for the better.
spk_0
If someone doesn't stand a chance, they have no chance of success.
spk_0
To give a shout out to someone means to publicly praise them.
spk_0
And finally, if you're good at media,
spk_0
you are skillful at using media outlets to convey a message to the public.
spk_0
