spk_0 The top stories from the KCBS radio newsroom.
spk_0 This is the all-local.
spk_0 Good afternoon.
spk_0 I'm Margie Schaefer and here's what's happening.
spk_0 Fleet Week is underway, but the Blue Angels are grounded and U.S. Navy ships are staying
spk_0 away.
spk_0 KCBS's Matt Bigler tells us about some changes that have been made as the festivities
spk_0 continue.
spk_0 The enlistment ceremony that kicks off Fleet Week in San Francisco was still held, but
spk_0 not on board a Navy vessel, which was the original plan, say Chris and Christina Rogers,
spk_0 whose son is enlisting in the Coast Guard.
spk_0 Someone disappointing that it's not actually on a Navy ship for this wearing him.
spk_0 Considering of Fleet Week, that would have been fun.
spk_0 But this is great.
spk_0 You know, the government's got to do what it's got to do.
spk_0 They'll work it out.
spk_0 Against all enemies.
spk_0 Against all enemies.
spk_0 Foreign and domestic.
spk_0 San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie made no mention of the government shutdown, but noted
spk_0 the city's deep connection to the Navy, which is celebrating its 250th anniversary.
spk_0 Our shipyards, our waterfront and our people have stood alongside the Navy for generations.
spk_0 And that tradition endures today.
spk_0 Fleet Week organizers say other events will continue, although without military participation.
spk_0 In San Francisco, Matt Bigler, KCBS.
spk_0 Canada's snowbirds flew over the Pacific Air Show in Huntington Beach over the weekend,
spk_0 the director of the Pacific Air Show, Kevin Elliott, telling the New York Times
spk_0 ahead of the event, thank God Canada's not the 51st state yet, referring, of course,
spk_0 to President Trump's threat to annex our Northern neighbor.
spk_0 The Royal Canadian Air Force's snowbirds will also headline this year's Fleet Week Air
spk_0 Show beginning this Friday through the weekend as the blue angels are grounded for now.
spk_0 Ballots are in the mail today as early voting for the state special election gets underway,
spk_0 but in Santa Clara County voters won't have the chance to approve or deny Proposition 50.
spk_0 KCBS's Shannon Golden reports there's a county-wide special election happening to that could determine
spk_0 how the county approaches more than $1 billion in federal cuts.
spk_0 More than a million residents in the county will have the chance to determine how Californians
spk_0 are represented in the U.S. House of Representatives.
spk_0 It is absolutely pivotal that everyone in our community exercise their right to vote and participate.
spk_0 But Santa Clara County executive James Williams says voters will also decide this November
spk_0 on a county assessor as well as measure A, a general sales tax which proponents say will
spk_0 soften the blow of federal cuts on county safety net services and hospital systems.
spk_0 We're looking at over a $500 million gap mostly in cuts to Medicaid for the upcoming fiscal
spk_0 year and that amount more than doubling in the year thereafter.
spk_0 Critics argue measure A is too vague about how the money will be allocated.
spk_0 As residents cast their votes they can drop them off at over 100 ballot boxes around the county.
spk_0 At sites such as libraries, transit centers, city halls and community landmarks.
spk_0 Matt Morales with the county registrar voters says in-person voting will be open later this month.
spk_0 In San Jose, Shannon Golden, KCBS.
spk_0 And of course Santa Clara voters are not excluded.
spk_0 They will also have the chance to approve or deny proposition 50.
spk_0 They're calling it the bad bunny effect.
spk_0 Travel searches to the Silicon Valley have skyrocketed since the announcement of the performer will
spk_0 take the stage during the halftime show at Super Bowl. KCBS is Jennifer Hodges reports.
spk_0 510 percent. That's how much travel searches have gone up for the South Bay since the bad bunny
spk_0 announcement. We've been preparing for months already.
spk_0 One campus is the manager of Berks restaurant in Santa Clara. He says they're getting reservation
spk_0 requests already and they've secured a dining tent in order to expand for even more diners.
spk_0 Since it's going to be winter we get a tent that's heated which we have chandeliers in it,
spk_0 it is heaters in it and it makes it an extra dining room. Our restaurant itself that we have is
spk_0 is a pretty large restaurant. We sit 250 at one time. We have about three private rooms and with a
spk_0 tent that's going to be our fourth one. The booking.com data specifically is for searches and not
spk_0 necessarily confirmed travel. Jennifer Hodges case CBS. Open AI is unveiling an update that lets chat
spk_0 GP2 users control third party apps at its annual developers event in San Francisco. For more
spk_0 Holly Kwan spoke with Bloomberg set figureman. How does this work? Is this a big improvement?
spk_0 Big improvement. I think it's more convenient because what I would say if you are someone who is
spk_0 chatting with chat GPT and also has an inkling to understand what the best three bedroom
spk_0 apartments look like in your neighborhood. You don't want to close that up and open up
spk_0 Zillow or another apartment app. This is great for you. I think it's supposed to be
spk_0 turning chat GPT into more of a central digital destination for you to take on a lot more
spk_0 of your tasks by integrating with third party applications that you give approval to.
spk_0 It basically wants to keep you on their app but allow you to do things that you might find
spk_0 necessary like listening to music. That's right. If you want to create a playlist for the weekend
spk_0 instead of going over Spotify and doing that from scratch you can connect it to Spotify, ask chat GPT,
spk_0 make me a playlist and then between those two wonderful apps it will create it automatically for
spk_0 you for your peraus. Again, I think it's just going to be how can we make chat GPT or first and
spk_0 possibly last stop as you think about what you need to do on the internet. In addition to say
spk_0 Spotify what other apps are they going to be working with? It's a mix. Right now it's limited to
spk_0 half dozen or so. Expedia, booking.com, Spotify, Canva, Figma. I should say that each or many of
spk_0 the companies that I just mentioned saw their stock pop just up there, mere mentioned during the
spk_0 event which tells you the state of play right now with OpenAI. I mean to influence the market
spk_0 about the expectation that developers will start integrating far more apps there in the coming
spk_0 months. Okay, the big headline today was the OpenAI deal with AMD. It seems like every time you have
spk_0 some story about OpenAI everybody stops and listens. Yeah, that's right. I mean the AMD one is
spk_0 generally a blockbuster deal of sorts. Though still not the biggest blockbuster deal that we've
spk_0 seen of OpenAI in recent weeks but you know it's a deal that we expect to be worth you know
spk_0 tens of billions of dollars. OpenAI will use AMD chips to power its services. OpenAI will also
spk_0 get potentially a stake as much as 10% into AMD for your listeners is really kind of probably the
spk_0 leading rival to Nvidia which also has a very big blockbuster deal with OpenAI. So it just speaks
spk_0 to how central again OpenAI is in this market and this infrastructure market as it kind of spends
spk_0 on what feels like a bottomless need for computing power to support its services. Okay, OpenAI
spk_0 also relieving a releasing software called agent kit. That's very intriguing. What does it do?
spk_0 You know the short answer that makes it easier for other companies and developers to create and
spk_0 deploy agents in the workplace. Those slightly longer ants would be that OpenAI and Throbbing
spk_0 and other AI companies. It's been a lot of this year talking up the potential of so-called agents
spk_0 that do more complex tasks. I'm going to use my house as much as the chat box. I'm going to
spk_0 get this back out. You know some lyrics you're kind of saying I'm in a workplace and I want you
spk_0 to do some research for me. I want you to code for me. I want you to do potentially
spk_0 high stakes valuable tasks for me and you know today it's been a little bit of a
spk_0 ever miss on how well these things perform but what OpenAI is trying to do is just make it easier
spk_0 and more seamless for companies to tailor and create these tools and deploy them in the workplace.
spk_0 Now all this was done at the developer's conference in San Francisco today. I always wonder
spk_0 to what extent are these conferences you know a peak into what the company is really doing. Does
spk_0 it kind of give you an Easter egg? What's coming up? It is amazing. I think they've announced a
spk_0 lot of stuff leading up to this event quite frankly overshadowed some of what came today. That said,
spk_0 I do think that there was a telling quote from the person who runs OpenAI's GPD operation
spk_0 Victoraly basically said, you know we never meant to just build a chatbot. You know we wanted to
spk_0 build a super assistant and we got a little sidetrack with his quote and I think the idea if you're
spk_0 trying to be the TV series they're trying to show again and again that the kind of product that
spk_0 users discovered this company through in late 2022, chatting with a chatbot is not necessarily
spk_0 the end of the story here. They want to continue them with beyond that form factor and create
spk_0 really an operating system of sorts that becomes really central to the way that we live and work.
spk_0 That is Bloomberg South Fagumin and you can hear our tech and business report weekdays at 1230
spk_0 on KCBS. A new study published in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine finds that more and more
spk_0 doctors are leaving clinical practice. Dr. Lisa Rotenstein is the author and an assistant professor
spk_0 at UCSF. She says this has real implications for the care of everyone in the US.
spk_0 Physicians who cared for patients who were more medically complex, patients who were older or
spk_0 had a greater percentage of patients who were eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid were more
spk_0 likely to leave clinical practice. Study was based on Medicare data from 2013 to 2022.
spk_0 Costco now sells ozempic and mugovii at its pharmacies. Novo Nordisk, the Danish pharmaceutical firm
spk_0 that makes the weight loss drugs says ozempic and mugovii are available at Costco pharmacies across
spk_0 the country. A one month supply of drugs at the retailer will run $499 at the same price they are
spk_0 listed for on Novo Nordisk's direct to consumer website as well as CVS and Walmart. Ozempic and
spk_0 mugovii typically retail for around 1300 and 1600 respectively according to GoodRx which compares
spk_0 drug prices from different pharmacies. Costco executive members in Costco city bank Visa card holders
spk_0 also receive an additional 2% discount. Members of the discount chain will still require a prescription
spk_0 to obtain the weight loss drugs. In Santa Cruz, one company is creating new ways to fix an old
spk_0 problem. Here's KCBS's Rebecca Gureon with more. We've all done it, opened a package only to be left
spk_0 with a bunch of Styrofoam that has nowhere to go but the trash. Cruz foam is solving that problem.
spk_0 Here's John Feltz, the co-founder and CEO. Well, we've developed a sustainable foam that is made from
spk_0 predominantly waste agricultural waste. We're looking at tackling really really terrible materials like
spk_0 what most people commonly know as Styrofoam or expanded polystyrene. Expanded polystyrene or
spk_0 XPS is often used in consumer packaging but it's very slow to degrade and when it does break down
spk_0 it releases microplastics and other pollutants but Cruz foam is different. Our stuff degrades in about
spk_0 eight weeks. It leads to no microplastics. I mean it's essentially food. It's just the remnants of
spk_0 of you know the agricultural industry and we've actually seen our material when it degrades
spk_0 benefit the soil. But it's not just the materials that make Cruz foam unique. It's their scalability.
spk_0 That enables them to challenge others in the industry and be cost competitive. Our ability to do that
spk_0 is the real breakthrough alongside you know the fantastic attributes of the material itself.
