At least not in the direction that you need it to.

Maybe you're holding a hundred worries at once.

And maybe some of those things are completely out of your control.

And if so, I just want to tell you that you are not alone.

And you are not broken.

You are a human in a hard moment.

In this space right here, right now,

is a quiet, simple space to breathe,

to remember who you are and to find your footing again.

So let's just take that moment.

Let's take that moment to breathe together.

Exhale.

Okay, let's begin.

So when life feels uncertain,

when the world outside, the world inside your head just feels so loud,

it's really easy to begin to spiral.

And if you're spiraling in the wrong direction,

it's going to feel like you're drowning in your thoughts,
spk_0
and your obligations, and your fears.

And you might find yourself thinking things like,
spk_0
why is everything happening at once?
spk_0
Is this ever going to get better?
spk_0
Are things going to change?
spk_0
Why can't I just be okay?
spk_0
Why can't everything just be easy?
spk_0
And then you start comparing with everyone else.
spk_0
And here's what I want you to hear today.

It's okay to not have it all figured out.
spk_0
And it's okay to feel overwhelmed.
spk_0
But in the chaos,
spk_0
I'm here to remind you that you are not powerless.
spk_0
There's still something you can do.
spk_0
And it might seem small,
spk_0
but sometimes this small thing is everything.
spk_0
And that is that you can choose which thoughts you give your energy to.
spk_0
And there's a quote I love,
spk_0
and it comes from William James, and he said this,
spk_0
the greatest weapon against stress is our ability
spk_0
to choose one thought over another.
spk_0
Just think about that.
spk_0
Let me read it again.

Stress also just so you guys know,

doesn't always come from our circumstances.

Often it's just the thoughts that we repeat on loop,

the ones that tell us that we're not enough,

or that we'll never make it through,

or that our circumstances are somehow our fault.
spk_0
But when you catch those thoughts,
spk_0
you identify the lies,
spk_0
and you choose better thoughts,
spk_0
and you choose to believe in the better thoughts.

You begin to shift your atmosphere inside yourself,
spk_0
and you start to take background.
spk_0
And again, changing your thoughts
spk_0
isn't going to fix everything instantly,
spk_0
but it will give you room to breathe.
spk_0
Room to act with clarity instead of panic.
spk_0
Room to focus on what we can do,
spk_0
instead of drowning in all the things that we can't.
spk_0
And now I want to share something special with you guys.

It's a poem that I read when I really needed to,

when I really needed to,

and this poem is great,
spk_0
because it just meets you where you are,
spk_0
and I hope that you guys feel it,

the way that I feel it,
spk_0
and it's by a man called Rudyard Kipling,
spk_0
and it's called If.

So I'll just be reading a short excerpt from this poem.

But it's a beautiful poem.
spk_0
I encourage you to go read the entirety of it,

but listen slowly and let it sink in.

If you can dream and not make dreams your master,

if you can think and not make thoughts your aim,
spk_0
if you can meet with triumph and disaster,
spk_0
and treat those two imposter's just the same.

If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken,

twisted by naves to make a trap for fools,

or watch the things you gave your life to broken,
spk_0
and stoop and build them up with worn out tools.

If you can make one heap of all your winnings,

and risk it on one turn of pitch and toss,

Those words from that poem, they remind me that strength

is not about pretending that we're fine.

It's about standing up after we've been knocked down,

and you not know how important it has been for me in my life

to hear those words,

about hearing about being willing to start over
spk_0
with tired hands,
spk_0
but a hopeful heart.

This poem's also about choosing grace over shame,
spk_0
faith over fear, peace over panic.

So if you are in the middle of a mess,

don't rush it, you don't have to have everything fixed today.

Just stay grounded, keep breathing,
spk_0
and choose one better thought.
