Welcome to the Midlife Pilot Podcast.
spk_0
We are glad you're with us.
spk_0
What is it like to become a pilot in your 40s and 50s?
spk_0
The challenges are unique for those of us in Midlife, but so are the rewards.
spk_0
Post-Bin, Brian, and Ted Talk Learning to Fly growing as pilots and the joy of flying
spk_0
at destinations.
spk_0
The purpose of the podcast is not to teach, but to share knowledge and experiences of being
spk_0
a Midlife Pilot.
spk_0
Join the Midlife Pilot Community and listen in every week.
spk_0
We are not CFIs or particularly intelligent, so if you want to learn how to fly, talk
spk_0
to anyone else other than the hosts of a podcast.
spk_0
Even this intro was too challenging for us and we used a robot to do it.
spk_0
Okay, checklists are complete.
spk_0
Let's get the show started.
spk_0
Hello and welcome to the Midlife Pilot Podcast.
spk_0
Episode 149.
spk_0
This podcast we'd like to share the experiences and challenges of flying in Midlife.
spk_0
This episode will be our information whiskey.
spk_0
We do this about once a month, about every four episodes.
spk_0
With me as always are my friends Brian and Nashville and Ted and Portland, hello, fellas.
spk_0
Hey, what's going on?
spk_0
One of the, we'll be just kind of batting things around and chewing the fats we like to
spk_0
say here in the cell.
spk_0
But I do want to catch up on, we've got some folks doing some fun flying and I want to
spk_0
hear about it.
spk_0
And I think tonight we should start with Brian because he looked like he was getting
spk_0
ready to say something.
spk_0
No.
spk_0
God forbid, I'm on a podcast and I say something.
spk_0
Right?
spk_0
Yeah, open it up, Ted.
spk_0
Take your mute so we couldn't hear it.
spk_0
I muted because I know you have to edit the show and I didn't want to have that cracking
spk_0
the kind of a spotty cow open.
spk_0
Well, so if you're a first time listener, you can understand that this is going very poorly
spk_0
and that this is what you signed up for.
spk_0
You could run it off now.
spk_0
No, I love our information whiskey format or lack of format because I think people already
spk_0
refer to our show as being a maybe a little bit looser anyway.
spk_0
So it's kind of like we're a free jazz group that is tonight doing even more improvisation.
spk_0
So I appreciate you guys hanging with us, especially you guys in the chat.
spk_0
Awesome.
spk_0
Have everybody here.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
But yeah, I did some flying last several days.
spk_0
The weather is just unreal everywhere.
spk_0
And I remember when I was in the very earliest stage of trying to understand whether for private
spk_0
pilot things or whatever and even just things like high pressure and low pressure just kind
spk_0
of had you scotch in your head for a second.
spk_0
If you weren't already a weather nerd, you know, you're like, wait, which one is?
spk_0
And I always I just air.
spk_0
I just decided that high pressure is age for hell yeah.
spk_0
So it was definitely hell yeah all all the last week.
spk_0
And so did some flying quite a set of set of adventures.
spk_0
Let's see.
spk_0
I'll run it down real quick.
spk_0
So it's not too boring, but I've talked about Bunyan's barbecue on the show before in
spk_0
Muscle Girls.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Not the best sounding name, but is amazing barbecue family in place been there 50 years.
spk_0
Just the one with the hot dogs correct.
spk_0
We got the hot dogs yet.
spk_0
Our friend Luke has a pretty great bit of the obvious.
spk_0
But I did a trip down there to the little Muscle Girls barbecue run and you know, you can
spk_0
you can tip people at FBOs right?
spk_0
You can tip your fuel guy.
spk_0
You can tip, you know, you can tip people and that's all great.
spk_0
You should.
spk_0
What I learned is if you come back with barbecue sandwiches and hot dogs and just a giant
spk_0
thing of them, that goes a long way.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Yeah, it does.
spk_0
I hit the mechanic shop.
spk_0
I hit the FBO everywhere I was going.
spk_0
I was a centikloss of Muscle Girls barbecue and so it felt good just to be nice.
spk_0
But then I've also lived on and only eaten exclusively barbecue and hot dogs for like
spk_0
three days.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
So it's finally right now today.
spk_0
So that's good.
spk_0
I'm going to come back from this.
spk_0
But things you can do when you're in basic matter, right?
spk_0
spk_0
Right.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Top 10 reasons you should get your basic mid.
spk_0
So anyway, that was great flying.
spk_0
Great fun.
spk_0
And then next day was, I guess, Saturday.
spk_0
I flew to Madisonville to India zero for the wings over Western Kentucky Air Show fly
spk_0
in.
spk_0
Funny little story about that.
spk_0
I called ahead because I wanted to see about the parking situation and all that.
spk_0
And I called and the person I was talking to said, well, yeah, just come on in.
spk_0
By the way, would you like to have your plane be a static display?
spk_0
And I said, wait, I'm sorry, what?
spk_0
She says, do you want to be a static display?
spk_0
You can be on display with the other aircraft on display.
spk_0
And I just said, it's a it's a Cherokee 180.
spk_0
You know, like, she's like, no, that'd be fine.
spk_0
That'd be great.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
I found out she said, well, honestly, it also just helps us.
spk_0
I'm trying to keep the movement area from the performers, prepare and anybody that,
spk_0
you know, that it is.
spk_0
It was kind of like a, you know, more than help to them.
spk_0
She needed a seat filler.
spk_0
And that's what you work.
spk_0
Exactly right.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
So, so then I, you know, it's an afternoon sun, it's like a, it's an afternoon air show
spk_0
with a night air show and all that sunset into night.
spk_0
So I go up there and, you know, they wanted to get any other planes that are coming in and
spk_0
out done by about two o'clock.
spk_0
So I was up there pretty early around two o'clock.
spk_0
I arrived at first.
spk_0
I just thought, do I have the wrong airport?
spk_0
I mean, there's nobody on a frequency.
spk_0
There's nothing going on.
spk_0
But then I started to see all the tents and all the things and I was like, okay, great.
spk_0
So I land, taxi up.
spk_0
They said, yeah, park right there.
spk_0
Then they put me on one of the remote control things and towed me, you know, opened up
spk_0
the gates and towed it in and then pulled the gates and all this stuff or, you know, the
spk_0
temporary fences and all that stuff around it.
spk_0
And it was just there.
spk_0
So I didn't realize it was going to be sort of static display kind of in the middle of
spk_0
the crowd of everything that was going on.
spk_0
And so I ended up unwittingly being kind of a general aviation ambassador 1960s Cherokee
spk_0
salesman, I guess, or something for the duration.
spk_0
And it ended up at one point where I was, I mean, when a mom comes up with two little
spk_0
kids and the kids are all enamored with the airplane and, you know, and they're like,
spk_0
you know, can can can he sit in there, you know, or you know, take a picture or something
spk_0
like, all right, sure, sure.
spk_0
So, you know, help them up and get them in the right seat and everything and then they
spk_0
take the pictures and then as soon as that's happening, I mean, I turn around, there's
spk_0
basically like a queue that's for me.
spk_0
And I realized this is not good.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
This is not what I was trying to do.
spk_0
So how do I, it was very sign fell, you know, it was sort of like, okay, how do I, how
spk_0
do I do this without being, you know, the bad guy to just kind of turn this faucet of display
spk_0
plane off?
spk_0
spk_0
Right.
spk_0
But ended up being just an amazing event.
spk_0
I did spend some time policing the airplane and making sure everything was cool.
spk_0
The best part was I didn't bring a chair or, you know, anything.
spk_0
But since my airplane was right in the middle of everything and one of the best seats of
spk_0
the house, I just sat, I just sat in the plane with the door open.
spk_0
Oh, man.
spk_0
And just had the, you know, sat there with a nice coffee and just had, I don't know, it
spk_0
was great.
spk_0
So they agreed to do everything.
spk_0
So I put a question.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
And I hit our friend's ex comment.
spk_0
But he asked on static display with pulled pork all over the copa at seat.
spk_0
I was going to ask, did any kids go, why does it smell like barbecue in here?
spk_0
Barbecue and cigarettes.
spk_0
And that's why he said that's what the 1960 smell like kid.
spk_0
spk_0
Exactly.
spk_0
Why does it smell like grandpa?
spk_0
Exactly.
spk_0
And then so when, when you did it, it occurred to you that if you're in the middle of everything,
spk_0
you know, how are you going to get out?
spk_0
Like are you there for the, yeah, so fun.
spk_0
You brought that up.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
So, well, let me just say the air show was amazing.
spk_0
There was a guy from Canada that was flying in easy.
spk_0
That was this crazy, erratic, easy situation.
spk_0
It was really cool.
spk_0
You know, they had all the jet trucks and all the fireworks and all the planes and all
spk_0
the things.
spk_0
It was really cool.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
But yes, so then there was a thing where it ended.
spk_0
I was kind of timing everything to be ready to go.
spk_0
And so I was out there in a headlamp, you know, pre-flooding everything, making sure
spk_0
everything was good and making sure nobody made off with one of the parts of the planters.
spk_0
And everything was good.
spk_0
And then everybody kind of left.
spk_0
And then they weren't opening the gates for me.
spk_0
So I had to get on the handheld and say, hey, you know, is this, is this happening?
spk_0
Come on, kind of leave.
spk_0
And they're like, oh, well, there's another TFR and we've got to get fireworks fought off
spk_0
the runway.
spk_0
This is about 815.
spk_0
They're like, oh, you'll be able to go about 10.
spk_0
I was just, oh, no.
spk_0
And I was just in my mind.
spk_0
I was thinking, I just gave value to this whole, you know, you know, I was basically a presenter
spk_0
for this thing.
spk_0
Come on.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
So, no, but long story short, then I think somebody kind of chimed in and said, okay, this
spk_0
is, we got to figure this out.
spk_0
So it was me and another guy, and 140, he said, can I get out before you, they only, they
spk_0
gave us five minutes.
spk_0
You got five minutes to start up and get off the runway.
spk_0
And so he's like, can I go before you?
spk_0
Because he's intersection departure, you know, he's gone.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Meanwhile, I'm, I'm using every bit of the taxi to do all of my testing and all my,
spk_0
you know, the fastest run up ever.
spk_0
And which I didn't love, but I, you know, here I am.
spk_0
It was, it was fine.
spk_0
And then, you know, took off and got either with about one minute to spare before the air
spk_0
space was locked down again.
spk_0
So anyway, it was fantastic.
spk_0
Small note, just slightly earlier that day when I was taking off, I was present for
spk_0
that skydiving accident that happened at John Tune.
spk_0
And so that was really weird.
spk_0
Just a lot of weird stuff happened that Dave's really said about that skydiving incident.
spk_0
So I was at the whole short line when all of that was going on over the radio.
spk_0
So just a lot of just weird.
spk_0
It was just a very just up and down and weird all around day.
spk_0
But I loved it.
spk_0
And then coming back at night, obviously, was just fantastic.
spk_0
And then last night, I took the plane back and just real quick, I'll try to rep this up.
spk_0
But I was flying back into to bowling green.
spk_0
I flew up the practice R&AV and to run away three and scored pretty high.
spk_0
I'm pretty happy on my fly-stone debrief.
spk_0
Nice.
spk_0
So that was nice.
spk_0
And I still needed two more landings for night currency.
spk_0
And so since I came in about a one or two not tailwind coming into run away three and
spk_0
did a full stop, took off again because long story you don't want to take off the other
spk_0
direction in that airport especially at night.
spk_0
Took off again.
spk_0
And then just went up to about 800 AGL, pulled power, practiced an impossible turn to go
spk_0
back to the runway to full stop land and then was done.
spk_0
So but I practiced an impossible turn that I wanted to pull the engine and then simulate
spk_0
that I, because I wanted to do it at night.
spk_0
I wanted to see what this is like at night.
spk_0
And I like to feel that push that you've got like how aggressive that push is.
spk_0
So pulled the power, did the really strong push, you know, and then I put, I think about
spk_0
1800 RPM in or something.
spk_0
Once I kind of got settled to sort of emulate kind of losing the engine but maybe getting
spk_0
it back a little bit or something.
spk_0
Sorry, sorry, this is a dumb question.
spk_0
What's idle in your plane?
spk_0
How many RPM?
spk_0
How many RPM?
spk_0
Oh, I was going to say idles when you pull the power all the way back.
spk_0
It's the same as really anything with an engine.
spk_0
No, but that's not important now.
spk_0
Yeah, exactly.
spk_0
About 900 800 800.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
Yours probably idles at 4000.
spk_0
No, seriously 1800 is idle.
spk_0
Yeah, right.
spk_0
I'm not joking.
spk_0
That is idle.
spk_0
So that's why I'm asking because I have to like compare.
spk_0
So yeah.
spk_0
Well, so anyway, that's the quickest version I can give of all the flying I did.
spk_0
But I just had a heck of a time and it was really cool because a lot of the plans I had
spk_0
made did not work out.
spk_0
People were sick, whatever.
spk_0
I did all this stuff by myself and I just had such a great time.
spk_0
So never let, never let change plans or people not being able to join you keep you from
spk_0
having, you know, just an incredible experience that you would never have any other way.
spk_0
And that's what I did about flying for the other flying.
spk_0
So that gave you the opportunity.
spk_0
So you're welcome.
spk_0
Yeah, thanks.
spk_0
Thanks for coming.
spk_0
You're talking about going to the sweatflan.
spk_0
So we're talking about?
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
I was going to ask about that.
spk_0
So, um, Dad, you've been, you know, it's getting fall up there, but you're doing some
spk_0
beach trips anyway, right?
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
So I flew two of our people this week.
spk_0
Delta Foxtrot was in town and he had asked me many, many months ago.
spk_0
He's like, Hey, if I come on October 1st, roughly, um, can we fly together?
spk_0
Like, it depends on the weather.
spk_0
But yeah.
spk_0
So he stayed an extra day so that he could fly with me.
spk_0
Nice.
spk_0
Um, the weather was interesting.
spk_0
Um, we went and played legal distances from clouds.
spk_0
Um, some of the strangest clouds we've had in a little while.
spk_0
Um, and we ended up going over to my, uh, Twin Peaks dion or that you've all seen in
spk_0
a recent video.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Um, and, uh, he loved that and, uh, I, he, he told me later that it was the day after
spk_0
his birthday.
spk_0
So he'd been in, in Portland the first time for his birthday.
spk_0
Nice.
spk_0
Um, we had a great time flying together and, uh, we finally got to see one of the mountains,
spk_0
um, the rest were shard in clouds.
spk_0
So, um, that was a great time.
spk_0
Uh, so, uh, Delta Foxtrot.
spk_0
So he was at our, um, hundreds, uh, episode recording in West Virginia.
spk_0
He doesn't know how.
spk_0
So, uh, the non-event, yes, exactly.
spk_0
Um, so it was cool to see him and, and, uh, you know, catch up and, and just nerd out
spk_0
a lot of stuff.
spk_0
Absolutely.
spk_0
Um, who tell, who tell Charlie Papa, aka, uh, Dom, um, and I finally got back up in the
spk_0
air.
spk_0
Um, and, uh, so I said, he's a relatively lower pilot and like, where haven't you gone?
spk_0
And he said, I haven't gone to Seattle.
spk_0
I'm like, great.
spk_0
Let's go to Boeing Field.
spk_0
So we flew up to Seattle and went into Boeing Field, which is always busy and it was, uh,
spk_0
it was kind of intense this time.
spk_0
And I'm not sure why it might have a little bit to do with the, uh, the, uh, funding situation
spk_0
of the government right now, but, um, they were a little stressed and just not having it.
spk_0
Uh, so, uh, we, but we had a good time.
spk_0
We, we flew up there and we, and flew around and, uh, the moment down and, uh, we saw
spk_0
it sometimes I'm like, Hey, you know, I already knew when low tide was, let's go land on
spk_0
the beach.
spk_0
So we, uh, we jetted over to the coast and went, which I just love going to that place.
spk_0
Um, uh, copayless, uh, I think it's Sierra 16, um, and landing on that beach.
spk_0
So we had a good time going out and doing that.
spk_0
So, um, it's fun.
spk_0
Um, landed with people.
spk_0
This is the time of the year that the weather changes.
spk_0
So instead of my taxi forward being, uh, 20 feet straight forward, uh, to, from, uh,
spk_0
the, the non-movement area to, to take off.
spk_0
So basically, I do my run up and then I'm like, Hey, how are you doing?
spk_0
Like taxi forward on Bravo 7, but then I call it a tower right ago.
spk_0
Um, instead, it's the other end of the runway.
spk_0
So it's a mile taxi, uh, 5,000 feet down to the other end, uh, such a taxi ways to get
spk_0
down there.
spk_0
And, uh, what it means is when I come back, if you're doing it right, you say, Hey, uh,
spk_0
can I have a long landing?
spk_0
And if they don't have anybody coming behind you, you can land, uh, what I like doing is
spk_0
landing on the thousand footers, just the wrong thousand footers, um, because my, my turn
spk_0
off is at the very end of the runway.
spk_0
There's a displaced threshold that way.
spk_0
So I have some, some room, but I come in and I, I get down in a ground effect right
spk_0
at the beginning of the runway.
spk_0
I sit there and I fly 4,000 feet down the runway and then I drop it down with a thousand
spk_0
footers and I turn right.
spk_0
So that was a lot of fun.
spk_0
Um, I've done that, I think twice this week, which is, it's such a weird maneuver to do.
spk_0
And maybe it's not the smartest, uh, saying, Oh, I'm going to wait till land until there's
spk_0
a thousand feet remaining on the runway.
spk_0
Uh, but, you know, and you are staying, that's not, that's not, no, not all.
spk_0
And I'm stable and I'm 20 feet off the runway.
spk_0
That's a question.
spk_0
And there's a, uh, a milder version of that at Oshkosh that happens, you know, a hundred
spk_0
times an hour.
spk_0
So yes, land on the dot exactly.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
That's cool.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
I like it.
spk_0
Like what Zach says here, he says, I did not know that this was an option.
spk_0
I'm heading west to get my midlife eagle flight.
spk_0
It is very important to, to watch where the tides are.
spk_0
Uh, and when you get there, watch where the people are.
spk_0
And if there's any vehicles there and like when we're there, there was a guy on, um, uh,
spk_0
powered parachute thing.
spk_0
And I was like, all right, he's not talking on the radio.
spk_0
We're just going to kind of come in circle and see if he moves out of the way.
spk_0
And if not, we'll leave.
spk_0
And he moved out of the way.
spk_0
And so yeah, this, uh, difficulty level is a little higher.
spk_0
So yeah.
spk_0
It's funny.
spk_0
You're like the seven three coming in by comparison.
spk_0
Exactly.
spk_0
I guess everything's real giant playing the egg.
spk_0
They're really look out.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
We're cautioning turbulence.
spk_0
That's awesome.
spk_0
Uh, I, yeah, and Delta Fox chart is in our chat and he's done something and I haven't
spk_0
done.
spk_0
And that's actually fly with it.
spk_0
So hopefully one day we'll get this done.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
I have, um, I haven't, the multi has, um, weather hasn't been as friendly here for multi
spk_0
training.
spk_0
Haven't done any flights since our last podcast.
spk_0
But I, um, I have been advised by several that, uh, I need 100 hours of night and I'm at
spk_0
a 62.
spk_0
So I decided and it actually kind of works out better with my schedule anyway.
spk_0
Uh, I'm going to start doing, uh, I'm going to emulate our friend, uh, Alyssa Miller,
spk_0
who has got a lot of night time.
spk_0
We used to set the, uh, our clocks by the creeper bot when she'd be up at 7 30 at night
spk_0
just about every night.
spk_0
So yeah.
spk_0
Uh, I plan on doing that and trying to get to 100 as soon as I can and I flew up to Chattanooga.
spk_0
I hadn't been up there in a while and, uh, was, uh, I flew a file, I, uh, far going up
spk_0
there and thought I was going to have to shoot an instrument approach.
spk_0
But the, uh, the edge of the overcast was maybe five miles, maybe 10 miles south of Chattanooga's
spk_0
airport.
spk_0
So it was clear and a million.
spk_0
But I did want to, it was, it was like a overcast layer at like 2500 feet and I'd like
spk_0
to try to get some more night off our approaches in, you know, when it's marginal.
spk_0
Uh, but it got a few good photos too, which, uh, it's always fun.
spk_0
But that's better for me.
spk_0
We got, uh, I got some more multi-training coming up this week.
spk_0
So we're here to hop back in the Duchess and, uh, start failing some mentions.
spk_0
The Duchess, the dad for a while, let's back up.
spk_0
Smack up came back today, a lot of little squawks and I got to tell you, um, the, the main
spk_0
squawk was the electric trim was out.
spk_0
And it's just with my instructors, the seats are pretty close together and the trim
spk_0
wheel is in between the seats.
spk_0
So I'm like having to maneuver my arm around to get in between the seats so I could trim
spk_0
the plane all and get their hands going on.
spk_0
So it's like, it's back and forth between the throttle and the trim all the time.
spk_0
So that electric trim really does reduce your workload in that particular plane.
spk_0
So I'm glad that they got that taken care of because it does make it a lot easier.
spk_0
So what you're saying is it's not a window knob on ceiling.
spk_0
It is not, um, it is not no.
spk_0
Yes.
spk_0
So I honestly would probably be a little bit easier to trim if it was.
spk_0
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Question.
spk_0
Uh, when you were flying to Chednauga, um, you know, it's, it's, there's a lot of mountains
spk_0
there.
spk_0
All of North Georgia and all of the areas all very mountainous.
spk_0
Mm hmm.
spk_0
And you're doing, so you're doing night and mountains.
spk_0
That's, and you almost had three at a three.
spk_0
So tell me how you accounted for that and if you were to have a problem, where were
spk_0
you going to go?
spk_0
There, there are mountains, but there's a corridor from McCollum looked at Chednauga
spk_0
that's not, uh, it's, it's, I would
spk_0
barely call it hilly.
spk_0
I mean, there's that, um, you know, I, I've made it known that I am seeking to become a
spk_0
professional pilot.
spk_0
And that's going to be a requirement of the job.
spk_0
I feel like I need to build up that experience.
spk_0
Now the, the reason it was a go for me was though it was overcast.
spk_0
It was about section that was about 10 miles north of McCollum in about 15 miles south of
spk_0
Chednauga, whatever it was.
spk_0
You know, if I lost an engine, you know, and I was at plenty altitude, but I, I feel like
spk_0
I need to start being in that situation more if I'm going to, I've got to get myself comfortable
spk_0
with it.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Where are you looking along the way?
spk_0
I mean, because I can't tell you this when I was flying back even just from Madisonville,
spk_0
I'm, I am looking every second the whole way, understanding where any options are that
spk_0
I can figure out a road interstates.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Just about anything like.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
There's about two in that anyway during daytime, but I'm really doing that at night.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
So there's about, I can think of five airports between Chednauga and McCollum that are within
spk_0
a four mile width of my flight pad that have instrument approaches.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
And then your altitude was what?
spk_0
Going up, I was at eight thousand feet.
spk_0
Oh, and that's another thing.
spk_0
It was, I'm not going to call it a religious experience or a spiritual moment, but it was
spk_0
a very unexpected, but very cool thing.
spk_0
It was cloud surfing.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
At night.
spk_0
So you're, you're in the clouds at night and it's just black.
spk_0
That's just all there is outside.
spk_0
But then you would get these little moments of greatness and then you would kind of pop
spk_0
out.
spk_0
And it was just, it was a, it was a really cool experience.
spk_0
So do you feel like, like what do you think about like the, the guidance that five thousand
spk_0
feet at night is about what you should do?
spk_0
I mean, I guess that just depends on where you are, what, what the elevation is ground.
spk_0
I looked at it.
spk_0
It's all about giving yourself as much time and an emergency as you can afford yourself.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Oh, yeah.
spk_0
There's also a monobuget.
spk_0
You know, I, you know, I'd love to go up to 11,000 to give myself that.
spk_0
But by the time I get up there, you're going to turn around and come right back down.
spk_0
So, you know, there's, there's a lot of difference.
spk_0
So to answer your original question, I was eight thousand going up and I was VFR coming
spk_0
back, 7500.
spk_0
I feel like there's this thing of, when you're a baby VFR pilot, you're spending all your
spk_0
time looking to find the next field, the next field, the next field, wherever you are.
spk_0
And then the secret is you, you then start flying IFR and it's like, well, you wouldn't
spk_0
be able to see the ground anyway.
spk_0
So all of a sudden, all that, that level of safety or that, that thought process changes.
spk_0
Here's the other thing you're going to be.
spk_0
And this is, I didn't choose this route specifically for this reason.
spk_0
But Brian, you asked the question and now that I think about it, it really is.
spk_0
Rome, Calhoun, Dalton and Lafayette are all airports that are within a reasonable distance
spk_0
of my fly path.
spk_0
And they're all north, south or roughly, you know, maybe seven, two, thirty five.
spk_0
But so, not a lot of turns would have to be made to get to that runway.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Just Gally's off ramps, basically, basically, how many hours do you say you have of nighttime?
spk_0
I'm at 61 and you, and I need a hundred and a hundred is just for a higher resume building.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
Companies like to see that on their resumes.
spk_0
Have you, have you calculated your ATP cross country hours?
spk_0
I have not.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
And that's the reason I also went up instead of just doing my night currency staying
spk_0
in your local is that I wanted to start doing that.
spk_0
Have you ever been in a Turkish prison?
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
We got been on the hot seat.
spk_0
You like gladiators.
spk_0
You're ahead of us, you know, so that's why I mean, I've got, I've got to check a couple
spk_0
of boxes to get my resume where I really want it.
spk_0
I need 40, I mean, I like to have 50, but 40 hours, multi time.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
I need, I need to get the hundred hours of nighttime is something that's within my direct
spk_0
control.
spk_0
It could be done relatively cheaply.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
I've got 30 somehow.
spk_0
I don't know how to do that, but because you do a lot of night.
spk_0
I really don't, but I guess I just have.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
I mean, I try not to fly at night, but I still have 30 hours of flying at night.
spk_0
So I'm back.
spk_0
I have like 1.2.
spk_0
Oh.
spk_0
What's night?
spk_0
I really need.
spk_0
Yeah, exactly.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
So, but I forgot how much I enjoy night flying.
spk_0
Oh, it's really good.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
So good.
spk_0
It's going to be a little tougher with the temperatures getting cooler, winter coming
spk_0
around and, you know, I think because that's definitely, I'll wait till I get into the
spk_0
professional world before I'm faced with that where they have planes that actually have
spk_0
fixes for that ice.
spk_0
Right.
spk_0
You're not just trying to pour hot coffee on your wing as you go.
spk_0
That's right.
spk_0
That's right.
spk_0
I have to hit Zach's comment here.
spk_0
He says night IFR is one of the best arguments for a parachute system, in my opinion.
spk_0
100% agree with that.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
There's this whole thing about, if you were a helmet, if you were a safety belt, a seatbelt,
spk_0
where am I?
spk_0
And you then drive riskier or fly riskier, that type of thing.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
And there is a tiny bit of that, but that is part of the thought process.
spk_0
And it's definitely the thought that I've had.
spk_0
Trust me, if I had a plane with a parachute, I would be using, you know, I would prefer
spk_0
that.
spk_0
But they, you know, what they say about night flying is that if you lose an engine and
spk_0
you choose a place to land, turn on your lights, if you don't like it, turn your lights
spk_0
back off.
spk_0
Exactly.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
So, yeah.
spk_0
But yeah, I'm excited about upcoming flights and speaking of which, Mr. Siskind, I'm not
spk_0
airing any dirty laundry here or anything, but you know, we have an event coming up this
spk_0
weekend.
spk_0
Well, I mean, we don't, but there is an event.
spk_0
You and I have an engagement to attend.
spk_0
That is true.
spk_0
We, uh, and maybe Ted will show up.
spk_0
I don't know.
spk_0
Ted, Ted, come on out to Gallaudet and see.
spk_0
I'm going to leave now.
spk_0
spk_0
Uh, uh, so we're going to check out the, uh, the music city.
spk_0
So Brian's already checked it out.
spk_0
I'll be checking it out for the first time.
spk_0
Music city stole, you said.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Music city.
spk_0
So, uh, what's the airport code?
spk_0
Is it X in X?
spk_0
Correct.
spk_0
spk_0
X ray.
spk_0
November X ray.
spk_0
No, he's okay.
spk_0
It is, it is a really well done event.
spk_0
And they got, you know, all the huge stage and live music and, uh, you know, vendors and
spk_0
all the things, but just the, the announcement and the production, the TV screens and the
spk_0
whole, like they've just got everything really dialed in.
spk_0
It's quite, it's quite the presentation.
spk_0
Um, so it's really cool.
spk_0
And I will go ahead and just put this out there right now.
spk_0
And I think I mentioned this to you, Ben, uh, in a text message recently, uh, if you choose
spk_0
to read those or if you've unblocked me.
spk_0
Um, but I have already agreed to my, with myself that I, uh, I, uh, I, uh, I, uh, I, uh,
spk_0
am going to compete in the rookie class of music city stole next year in a Cherokee 180
spk_0
with no special anything.
spk_0
But you're wrong.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
And, uh, you know, I was really inspired by the guy I saw last year that was doing it,
spk_0
I think in a champ or something, uh, something with new flaps and just, right.
spk_0
He's just kind of landed short as he can land.
spk_0
He's not, you know, he's not trying to slam on the brakes and stand it up on the front
spk_0
propeller or anything.
spk_0
He's just trying to do the best he can.
spk_0
And that's what, well, I will do it with you.
spk_0
Um, I, I have told you, but I'm doing, I'm doing the same class.
spk_0
I, I'm not even going to try to compete.
spk_0
I just, oh, no, listen, you, we, you have to do the rookie class anyway.
spk_0
Oh, okay.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
I was just, okay.
spk_0
But the whole point is just that you've already got an airplane that is absolutely dialed
spk_0
for exactly these kinds of activities.
spk_0
And so it, if I'm doing it, yeah, if I'm doing it in a Cherokee 180 that has no business
spk_0
doing this, then you better show up in this name class as I, and, and, and beat me.
spk_0
And if you don't beat me, that's what we have to figure out.
spk_0
If somehow I, that would be the biggest walk of shame.
spk_0
Um, I mean, I, I'm just going to be counting on the fact that you're going to scratch all
spk_0
of your, your landings, uh, because that's how I can win.
spk_0
Well, that is very possible.
spk_0
So don't, don't rule that out.
spk_0
So, um, great event.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
We get, we're looking forward to that.
spk_0
That's coming up, uh, next week.
spk_0
Uh, this this weekend, right?
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
This coming week.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
Adam is asking if my insurance company is okay with that.
spk_0
Uh, yes.
spk_0
You were, you were landing in an airport.
spk_0
That's right.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Just landing with intention.
spk_0
Um, but, uh, you know, we'll check on such things.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
So we've got a few other events in an announcement.
spk_0
Uh, we're one other really.
spk_0
Uh, we are now, uh, beginning the plans for the next midlife pilot podcast fly in, uh,
spk_0
boom.
spk_0
Plans are being ideated for spring.
spk_0
That's a, let's say a 50 cent Brian word.
spk_0
It is.
spk_0
It is.
spk_0
I read it.
spk_0
And, um, thank you for Brian for writing it.
spk_0
Now, I smell some a little smarter than I did before.
spk_0
Maybe I don't know.
spk_0
Oh, did I write that down?
spk_0
I did.
spk_0
He did.
spk_0
He did.
spk_0
And, um, you know, it's been bantered about.
spk_0
Nothing is set in stone.
spk_0
Nothing has been set in stone, but we did want to kind of toss out there.
spk_0
Uh, we did get some feedback from our friend Ryan who is in the chat about having it at
spk_0
Tango 82 again.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Brian, did you want to hit the feedback real quick?
spk_0
Ryan K writes us, he's been listening to us kick around what we might be doing for the
spk_0
next event.
spk_0
Fly in.
spk_0
And he was at Tango 82 and he was at Oshkars as well.
spk_0
He attended, uh, the best and worst of aviation events.
spk_0
And we wouldn't identify witches, which is right.
spk_0
Or just leaving that up to you guys.
spk_0
Uh, he says, uh, my thought on the fly end for next year would be to go back to Tango 82.
spk_0
Here is my reasoning for this number one.
spk_0
If he basically saying, if done a little earlier, whether should not be as much of a factor.
spk_0
We definitely had all of our battles of storms, uh, to get there.
spk_0
It all worked out, but, um, slightly earlier might be slightly better, which we can do.
spk_0
Yep.
spk_0
Uh, perfect location with all needed amenities.
spk_0
Absolutely.
spk_0
Um, the hanger hotel was amazing.
spk_0
The rooms are really nice.
spk_0
The hotel was great.
spk_0
The people that worked there were awesome.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
The decor and the whole vibe and the porches and just all the Tiki, the Tiki bar.
spk_0
Yeah, Tiki bar.
spk_0
We took it all over and made our own bar there.
spk_0
Uh, our Virgil could create his own bar there.
spk_0
Uh, and, uh, I'll tell you where this Comanche driver is really not a, how to put a bar together.
spk_0
I'll tell you what, yes.
spk_0
But, uh, anyway, so everything just was so great.
spk_0
And then also there is the diner that's right there.
spk_0
And also there was, uh, Tak Arrow, which was just an incredible, gracious host for us to have a live event there.
spk_0
Chairs, tables, PA equipment, they provided all this stuff for us to be able to have a podcast done live there.
spk_0
And they didn't have to do that, you know, so, uh, yes, all those amenities right there on the airport cannot beat that.
spk_0
Good, they got good maintenance shop there.
spk_0
Ben took care of you and, yeah.
spk_0
And it's a, you know, if you're into shutting down runways, it's very easy.
spk_0
Just talked to Ted.
spk_0
He, Ted was able to shut it down for almost a half an hour with that piece right there.
spk_0
Yeah. Yeah.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Uh, so, um, you know, it's got all the possibilities.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Uh, all right.
spk_0
He says number three, I feel the closure of the ramp and the open house really took away from the experience.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
So for context, there were two other events, I think happening.
spk_0
At the same time, one, if not two, uh, there was a Vietnam veterans event.
spk_0
And I think maybe one other thing.
spk_0
So there was a car show.
spk_0
There was other planes.
spk_0
People roping off this, roping off that.
spk_0
There were a lot of things and we couldn't, we had to kind of move all of our planes from the main apron up to the north lot.
spk_0
Uh, in the middle of the occasion.
spk_0
And it kind of broke up a little bit of the rhythm of us flying all with each other, even though we didn't plenty of that anyway.
spk_0
But if, if we can time it to be not while there's a million other things going on, which I'm assuming is possible, um,
spk_0
then that would probably make it a little better.
spk_0
So I appreciate him mentioning that.
spk_0
Uh, yes, there were some very cool airplanes to see.
spk_0
He says, but without being able to park close, that really put a damper on some fun flying and seeing each other's plans.
spk_0
So yeah, the north lot, being relegated to the north lot was not ideal.
spk_0
Um,
spk_0
um,
spk_0
so many were not able to make it due to various circumstances.
spk_0
A repeat location may be appropriate.
spk_0
We've already had one person in here say, I wasn't able to make it.
spk_0
Please do that.
spk_0
Uh, selfishly, I would like to see a more northern location, but in April, the Midwest, Midwest can be, whether it can be dicey.
spk_0
So I mean, I don't know.
spk_0
With T82, wait, to beat, when, when can't the weather be dicey in the Midwest?
spk_0
I know.
spk_0
I know.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
I, um, yeah, he makes a point.
spk_0
March, April can make that probably, you know, it's probably a good time to be there.
spk_0
One of the things that we wanted to ask our audience, both here in the chat and who are listening to us on whatever platform they're using.
spk_0
Tell us if you were at the event, tell us what we should do different, aside from the timing.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
And then also, if you have, uh, we're looking for airports that have, uh, as little work on us as possible, quite rightly.
spk_0
Like Tango, 82 has a hotel, has services, has restaurants nearby.
spk_0
They had crew cars, they had bars, they had diners, they had everything that we could possibly need without technically ever having to leave the airport if we didn't want to.
spk_0
And not saying that we have to have all of that, but, you know, um, they had, I think, 48 rooms, 44 rooms or something,
spk_0
um, which, you know, everybody wants to get one, they get one or they go get an Airbnb, they have rental cars, it'll be delivered there.
spk_0
If you want to do that, spend some time there.
spk_0
So if you have a place that's relatively centrally located, I do like to our friend Bo, Sennice's suggestion to go.
spk_0
Literally to a near port that was just south of the Arctic Circle.
spk_0
And I'm not even exaggerating. He went up there. I'm sure it was an amazing experience. Yeah.
spk_0
Yeah. That's, that's probably not going to work.
spk_0
Well, I will take any suggestion.
spk_0
Yes.
spk_0
Yes.
spk_0
We'll treat you down and we'll make fun of you, but we'll take suggestions.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Um, Mr. Mr. EZG did say, uh, Kentucky Lake Dam, that is definitely an option.
spk_0
The number of, uh, uh, rooms or places for people to stay if you're not a camper that is a little more limited.
spk_0
Uh, but are you talking about, you're talking about rough river, rough river, I mean, yeah.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
I think it's really cool.
spk_0
I think Kentucky Lake State Park, I think has cabins too.
spk_0
Oh, do they?
spk_0
I think I don't, I don't quote me on that, but that may be what he's talking about.
spk_0
Well, um, I mean, you know, rough river is not a terrible place to do it.
spk_0
Oh, there's a lot of, there's a lot of options there.
spk_0
If people want a camp, they can camp.
spk_0
There's cabins if they want cabins.
spk_0
There's a, you know, whatever, but it's definitely a little more remote and, uh,
spk_0
the restaurant scene there is probably not as good as it was.
spk_0
It didn't go any too.
spk_0
Correct.
spk_0
And then also, uh, I think somebody will come and bring barbecue.
spk_0
That's, that's an option.
spk_0
But if we're going to rely on it down, it's a different, different.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
Also have to, uh, mention that, uh, our friend, Erica Gilbert,
spk_0
said that we are welcome to do that in Lexington.
spk_0
Oh, uh, and she mentions that around that time of year, there are horse races and some other
spk_0
things that might be attractions to spouses or, uh, you know, things going on.
spk_0
And I said, yeah, um, we'll put it in the pot there.
spk_0
You said, um, you said, get it up.
spk_0
Uh, yeah, yeah, um,
spk_0
Zach said, how many attended at Tango 82 for us?
spk_0
And I, I counted, he was in the 30s.
spk_0
They were there.
spk_0
I think as far as planes were concerned, how many do you think they were?
spk_0
I think we probably had about, uh, between 15 and 20 planes.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
It was, uh, it's hard to keep track of that too because some people, they're just for a,
spk_0
period, you know, a day or for one night or, and we were kind of, we all got there so early
spk_0
because of the storms.
spk_0
We got there.
spk_0
All two nights ahead.
spk_0
And by the time it was all said and done, uh, I couldn't tell you, I thought it was maybe
spk_0
like 50 people or something, but I don't know.
spk_0
Um, I mean, considering it's just, you know, this place out in the hill country of Texas,
spk_0
I was very surprised that, you know, anybody came.
spk_0
So it was great.
spk_0
Man, we had a hell of a time.
spk_0
We had a hell of a time.
spk_0
Did you know people live in Texas?
spk_0
The thing is, people live in the hill country of Texas even.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Well, um, yeah, you know, the brewery was downtown was really awesome.
spk_0
Again, it just, it, we have our boxes we need to check, but then there were like eight more
spk_0
boxes that it also checked.
spk_0
So, um, one thing I'm curious about, I don't know if you guys think about, um,
spk_0
I would, I really, I kind of wanted to try to do something like this last year.
spk_0
It's a little bit of fine line for us because we don't want to have a sanction event where
spk_0
we're now responsible for your fun.
spk_0
Um, all that to be said, um, it'd be cool if there is at least, uh, some, some educational content.
spk_0
Something of value, maybe, um, and Erica, I know, uh, would be willing to do something.
spk_0
Um, and, you know, we could probably get some other instructor and knowledgeable people to do things.
spk_0
Uh, you know, so it's kind of like,
spk_0
I don't know.
spk_0
When you're telling your wife, you know, or, or your husband, um,
spk_0
Hey, I'm going to Texas this weekend for the aviation meetup thing as well.
spk_0
I mean, it's, you know, it's educational.
spk_0
It's a, there's a safety, that's the safety seminar.
spk_0
So I mean, what exactly?
spk_0
You not want me to be safe?
spk_0
Because I mean, I'm trying to be safe.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Uh, anyway, um, the, yeah, let's get the, uh, let's knock out the, um, this is very late, right?
spk_0
In the game here, but we're going to go along tonight.
spk_0
Uh, let's knock out the, uh, now it, it's information whiskey.
spk_0
So I'm going to interrupt you there.
spk_0
And so, yeah, Mr. Duggeek said, uh, uh, reeducational content,
spk_0
I can do a seminar of lead-to-peak versus rich peak.
spk_0
And what rich peak is wrong?
spk_0
That would be perfect.
spk_0
Yes.
spk_0
What, why don't we have just like a, a, a, a, a,
spk_0
lean-of-peak versus rich-of-peak arm wrestling championship?
spk_0
I was going to say octagon, but sure.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
I was going to keep it simple with cornhole, but that's not the year thing.
spk_0
We're gentle down here in the cell.
spk_0
Well, uh, I just want to remind everybody really quickly that you can join our
spk_0

spk_0
Go to freedom-aviation-network.org,
spk_0

spk_0

spk_0
and more visit midlifepilotpodcast.com, the, uh,
spk_0
two, two bounces in a, in a skip or where's it?
spk_0
Oh, yeah.
spk_0
Two, two, three landing vlogged.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Those shirts are doing really well.
spk_0
I'm starting to see like, I was like, oh man,
spk_0
people are, people are getting these in all the colors.
spk_0
So, uh, a lot of people are really happy to show off how,
spk_0
how much they know about landing airplanes.
spk_0
And, and, and, uh, experienced pilot logging,
spk_0
landings techniques.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
So, uh, yeah, we've got some good suggestions in the chat.
spk_0
Um,
spk_0
Philip, uh, in our chat says, could we get education that would qualify for a
spk_0
wingscredit?
spk_0
I'll bet we, if we could get Mr. Ballard or Miss Gilbert out there,
spk_0
we could probably make that happen.
spk_0
Yeah, we also, uh, our friend Zach has thrown down the challenge to do a,
spk_0
Tanguaydi two stole competition.
spk_0
Uh, and then, uh,
spk_0
Ted or he did, yeah.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Uh, at a great price as well.
spk_0
Um, and then our friend Barry, uh, checkmate Barry says,
spk_0
a video creator meetup tips and tricks, which Brian, I think,
spk_0
but well, you and Ted could, uh, speak to that quite.
spk_0
Brian and Barry could, could speak to that.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
That's a good idea.
spk_0
So, I mean, that, that sounds really, uh,
spk_0
I like these ideas coming in.
spk_0
Very cool.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Video, um,
spk_0
aviation video meetup sponsored by checkmate aviation.
spk_0
Get a little checklist, you know?
spk_0
Yeah, and congrats Barry for hitting a year on owning checkmate aviation.
spk_0
Yeah, that's good.
spk_0
Uh, it's been a checklist, Barry, your checkmate, Barry, for a year now.
spk_0
That's, yeah, awesome.
spk_0
And, uh, you know, since I know Barry is in the chat right now, uh,
spk_0
that's just way easier than emailing.
spk_0
I can just tell Barry that the IF, the, the sort of prototype IFR checklists, uh,
spk_0
that you sent, uh, I guess each of us, right?
spk_0
Yep.
spk_0
Um, so far it's, it's been so helpful and, and really cool to have, um,
spk_0
especially for me as I'm learning.
spk_0
So, uh, it, the way that it sequences things out, um,
spk_0
I already can tell is, is just going to be massively valuable to me.
spk_0
So, uh, thank you for creating that.
spk_0
And I hope that those hit the market soon so that everybody else can get those.
spk_0
I, there is one misspelled word on it, but I'm not going to tell you which one it is.
spk_0
All right.
spk_0
So, uh, but, you know, that's, it's not, it's, it's a space saving typo probably, right?
spk_0
Uh, no, it's a, it's a beautifully done, uh, amazing checklist.
spk_0
Uh, so can't wait for, let us know Barry when those hit the market.
spk_0
Um, also speaking of sponsored, uh, things, look at this.
spk_0
Guys, if you see this, mine's over my, uh, left shoulder here.
spk_0
I got the latest, greatest, uh, my arrow glass, uh, from our buddy,
spk_0
phangeopilot.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
This one's actually got a plan of view of Lucy on it.
spk_0
And, uh, the bowling green airport, what you can see is VFR right now.
spk_0
Um, he's done some really cool.
spk_0
I love just seeing how people improve their, you know, their iterations,
spk_0
you know, and since we're getting the first to be true of these iterations, now it's,
spk_0
it's all five gigahertz and you can press this button here and go through the,
spk_0
it's got a little dimmer, you know, you can do all these things with it now.
spk_0
It's just, it's, it's a, it's a cool thing.
spk_0
So anyway, um, congratulations for, uh, uh, Tim getting my arrow glass, uh, going.
spk_0
And, and thanks for sending us always the latest, greatest ones.
spk_0
spk_0
Uh, what's, what's on yours, Ted?
spk_0
Uh, my arrow glass?
spk_0
Well, the one in this back there is still, uh,
spk_0
the following the, the bad API.
spk_0
So it's just, it's just white, but I've, I got the one from him, the replacement one,
spk_0
and, uh, it's still singing the box.
spk_0
So it's the same design.
spk_0
It's showing nothing.
spk_0
I don't know.
spk_0
I haven't opened the box yet.
spk_0
Oh, sorry.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
All right.
spk_0
I do appreciate that, that I thought that the show notes to be short this week
spk_0
because it's, it's, uh, information whiskey.
spk_0
And we keep talking about all these things.
spk_0
And so the, uh, uh, uh, show notes, which basically for me is very long at this point.
spk_0
So yeah, it's great to make it longer.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Hey, I, I want to talk about, uh, patron and discord.
spk_0
So, um, we have a new patron this week.
spk_0
And that's Lawrence G at the beast stole kit level.
spk_0
Uh, and then, uh, discord accomplishments.
spk_0
Um, uh, Chuck who, uh, Chuck and I hung out at Oshkosh.
spk_0
He's a, a student sport pilot.
spk_0
He completed his solo cross country.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
There's a lot of great talk and, uh, and discord about that.
spk_0
Which is great.
spk_0
Um, juliet four was talking about a big flight.
spk_0
Did he buy a plane?
spk_0
juliet four.
spk_0
I had Charlie Bravo Oscar.
spk_0
I saw that, but I, I don't know.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
I saw what you're referring to, but I don't know the details about it.
spk_0
And then, uh, Ryan, uh, who was spoke about his, his email about tango ready to, uh, he, uh,
spk_0
removed his color vision limitations and fluid family in his plane, which is really awesome.
spk_0
And as it heads up in the last few months, uh, there have been a lot of changes about, uh,
spk_0
people that are that struggle with color vision.
spk_0
And, um, you know, they, they changed the process about a year ago at the FAA, um, to make it
spk_0
actually more difficult, um, to, to distinguish color.
spk_0
Um, they've loosened that test a little bit.
spk_0
And they've also made it so that if you tried to upgrade, for instance, if you try to go from
spk_0
a third class to a first class, uh, it's not punitive.
spk_0
So if you fail, you're still, you still have your third class.
spk_0
It doesn't matter if you're ground-fathered in that kind of stuff.
spk_0
Don't rely on me telling you this, but there have been changes even the last month about, uh,
spk_0
that, that color vision test.
spk_0
So, um, these are the things you learn when you, when you watch the FAA ground rounds videos.
spk_0
I, which I'm, I'm glad that you, um, spoke with more specificity around all that because
spk_0
when I just looked at the notes here that you were going off of, it said, Ryan K color vision removal.
spk_0
We removed his color vision.
spk_0
Yes.
spk_0
Exactly.
spk_0
So monochromatic flying is, uh, yeah.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
That's awesome.
spk_0
I mean, you know, if anything is not punitive, great because so many other things are so.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
So, um, yeah, the FAA was like, hey, look, you don't have to have perfect color vision.
spk_0
You need to be able to have it at an aeromedical level.
spk_0
And that was cool to see that they actually like made those changes.
spk_0
So, um, again, please don't rely on me.
spk_0
I'm a support pilot.
spk_0
So, take it for what's worth, uh, but, uh, I would investigate the changes that have happened
spk_0
if you are someone who is, uh, on a color vision limitation.
spk_0
Right on.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Very cool.
spk_0
By the way, uh, Zach's saying we need an MPP discount code.
spk_0
Uh, Zach, you deserve one.
spk_0
We'll, we'll, we'll try to make a note to send you one.
spk_0
Uh, yeah.
spk_0
And then, uh, if anybody else wants a discount code for merch or any of those things, um,
spk_0
send us a feedback, go to midlifepilotpodcast.com and give us either a topic idea or something or tell us about an experience you had.
spk_0
Yep.
spk_0
Uh, feedback about the show, just anything.
spk_0
Um, we, we would like to be more feedback driven, but people are pretty gun shy.
spk_0
So, uh, you know, we'll, we'll now just buy everybody's feedback.
spk_0
It's fine.
spk_0
Yes.
spk_0
Uh, and we have, we, we, we can't really, uh,
spk_0
I mean, there's certain things we get where it's just like, okay, we're,
spk_0
that's not really a feedback feedback.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
But, uh, but yeah.
spk_0
So, uh, been, been how many hours do you have now?
spk_0
Total, um, 1241 hours.
spk_0
Wow.
spk_0
1241.
spk_0
In the race to 1500.
spk_0
Then by the way, if I do, when I come up, there's a really good chance that I might come up for the music city stole.
spk_0
I may come up the night before.
spk_0
Because I may be doing the majority of them on flying for the foreseeable future at night.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
Well, that's great.
spk_0
Uh, are you saying you need a place to stay?
spk_0
Is that kind of probably?
spk_0
spk_0
Come on.
spk_0
Come on.
spk_0
I'm just giving you a heads up that, um, a lot of my
spk_0
Transiting to different places are going to be at night.
spk_0
I really do want to.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Books.
spk_0
I just didn't, I didn't know that your whole
spk_0
night
spk_0
mention or early in this episode was all
spk_0
a big foundational setup for you to be able to get a room at my house for the music city stole.
spk_0
Well, I figured you'd probably have to warn your, your lovely bride, uh, and start, you know,
spk_0
letting her process this information before.
spk_0
Haven't you stayed here before?
spk_0
I have not.
spk_0
Oh, um, well, you are welcome to stay here anytime.
spk_0
We have a, we have a guest room with, with your name on it.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
So no worries.
spk_0
Uh, and you know where the airport is and it's two minutes from my house.
spk_0
So come on with it.
spk_0
And, uh, yeah, I mean, yeah, I'm at 1241.
spk_0
It's now the race to 1500.
spk_0
Nice.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
We'll see.
spk_0
I mean, you know, I, um, listen, I'm not, I'll get there what I get there.
spk_0
I, um, you know, I'm going to enjoy this part of it.
spk_0
This is, I've decided that I'm not putting pressure on myself to get there.
spk_0
But, uh, you know, I, I'm going to make the most of it.
spk_0
Well, I am a little bit behind you, but a lot behind you, I've been studying like crazy
spk_0
for instrument and just trying to get this monkey off my back.
spk_0
I think I'll be taking a test in about a month or, you know, somewhere around there.
spk_0
And, um, it, it feels really good to start having it clicked and come together.
spk_0
I want to give a special shout out to our friend, Lewis, who's been absolutely mercilessly
spk_0
all over me getting this done. Uh, and we have a little Facebook group that's part of
spk_0
Erica Gilbert's, uh, course materials and, you know, it's sort of a way for us to commune around
spk_0
our class or low cohort. And, uh, and, you know, Lewis doesn't, he's already, he's,
spk_0
instrument flying. Oh, you know, very experienced. He doesn't, he's in the class. He's,
spk_0
it's kind of like if your dad is like, well, I'm going to go to school with you.
spk_0
And you pass history, you know, so, uh, that's kind of what it is. But it's been great, you know, um,
spk_0
and when I don't understand something, I mean, he'll just, he'll just call me like, hey,
spk_0
I've only got a few minutes, but I want you to know that I see where you're getting hung up with,
spk_0
you know, this and that. And it's really just this, just think about it this way and that way.
spk_0
And it's actually much simpler than you're making it or whatever. And then you go, okay, great.
spk_0
So I couldn't be, uh, doing it as well as I could be if it weren't for Erica, having such a great
spk_0
class and having me be a part of it. And then also for, uh, Lewis and, and also Flint, you know,
spk_0
and others for just, I mean, it's, sometimes it takes a village. Yeah. And I think in this case,
spk_0
it certainly does my, uh, but I'm, I'm giving it everything I got. Absolutely. And I want to, uh,
spk_0
give a quick shout, uh, Mike Alpha, golf, uh, Mr. Gillette says night flight back to K&W. All I
spk_0
have to tell you is be careful what you asked for because that will likely happen before the end of
spk_0
the year. Uh, Ted, do you want to, uh, hit up on Adam Vs? Comment? Yeah. Adam V said, when will
spk_0
y'all do a, a mosaic update for when the sport pilot changes take effect in a few weeks? Or is
spk_0
that too topical? We probably will. Uh, I, I know, uh, who tell Charlie Popper and myself for both,
spk_0
uh, planning on some solar flights that we wouldn't be able to do before that day. So, um,
spk_0
yeah. Yeah. Well, I'm sure we'll at least mention it, whether we make an episode out of our
spk_0
hotel. What can you tell us, Ted? Uh, I'm going to fly the mighty 152. Yeah. Whoa. And once
spk_0
kind of gas mileage, though, I can do that right now. Man of 152 is so narrow. I, it's that's
spk_0
such that's the, the factor that you can be claustrophobic. Oh, so much. You've been driving a
spk_0
Tesla and now somebody's like, take this old, real kid. I know. Yeah. We're saying take this
spk_0
Pinto kid. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Very good. Uh, what else do we, we need to cover? Barry got it right.
spk_0
He said the word unforecasted. Uh, yes, that is the one word that was not, that was the one typo.
spk_0
Ah, good, good job, Barry. I was wondering what he was referring to. Sure. He's already
spk_0
aware. And with mosaic, um, as X says, Ted taught me it affects everyone. Sorry, vote for that.
spk_0
Also, um, sport pilot does affect all of us because you can walk away from having a medical
spk_0
and still fly. And that is key. And you can probably fly the plane you're in. Uh, so, uh, with less
spk_0
free loaders, right, right? This isn't people that necessarily have a sport pilot license.
spk_0
It's private pilots exercising the privileges of sport pilot. So keep that in mind.
spk_0
So what you're saying is instead of splitting the gas up between four people, I'll only be able
spk_0
to split it up between two people. Exactly. Yeah. Yeah. That's fine. Yeah. Yeah.
spk_0
Very cool. Um, what else fell as anything else for the good of the order? No, man, I think we're good.
spk_0
I do want to remind people to, you know, we got to get on this fly and things soon because, uh,
spk_0
the, the planning and the reservations and all that stuff is getting hotel blocks or whatever it
spk_0
is, we're going to have to turn the corner on that soon. I know Ted, a couple of months ago, was like,
spk_0
do we really have to talk about this right now? But I'm sounding the alarm now is the time.
spk_0
If you have a suggestion, you better hurry up and send it to us because we may be making some
spk_0
reservations, uh, sooner than later. So you have been warned. I want to remind everybody, excuse me.
spk_0
Go forget to leave us a five star review on Apple podcast that really goes a long way in
spk_0
helping us out. If you like what you've heard tonight or maybe even last week, don't forget to
spk_0
hit subscribe on your podcast player. Uh, and I think that's it for me. Um, my bit of
spk_0
wit and wisdom for tonight, you know, I've been kind of structuring towards multi or IFR. I don't
spk_0
want to forget our, um, our private pilot student friends. Tonight is for them. And it is learning to
spk_0
fly where the horizon is steady, but your confidence isn't signing off episode 149 to the mid-life pilot
spk_0
podcast. Goodbye everybody.
