You're listening to the Epic Outdoors podcast brought to you by Fierce Firearms, Epic Outdoors choice for custom hunting rifles.
Speaker B
Hey, everybody. Jason Carter, Adam Bronson and some of the Epic Outdoors crew here in Southern Utah. Got everybody in the office somewhat here on a Monday, right? We got Devin. How you doing, Devin?
Speaker A
I'm great.
Speaker B
Got a bull in the cooler. Yeah, we're talk about that, huh?
Speaker C
Yeah.
Speaker B
Yeah.
Speaker C
I'm bringing in the cooler delivered.
Speaker A
It's always a good feeling when they're in the cooler.
Speaker B
Yeah, it's awesome.
Speaker C
Ivory's in the salt.
Speaker A
Thanks to Ashley. Yeah, she cuts me out.
Speaker B
She cuts me. Except for she won't cut ours. We had to do our own. She's the one that knows, has all the knowledge. Wyatt, how you doing?
Speaker D
I'm doing good. So.
Speaker B
Yeah. Hunter moving along? Yeah.
Speaker D
In full swing.
Speaker B
Yeah.
Speaker A
Did you say you're moving along? What?
Speaker B
You say he's hobbling.
Speaker D
Hobbling along today.
Speaker B
Ouch.
Speaker A
Sorry.
Speaker C
Jeez.
Speaker B
Would you like to define that a little bit? Take a tumble for the worst.
Speaker D
I'll be back. I'll be back. Don't worry. What is that?
Speaker C
What did I miss?
Speaker B
Oh, there's another story I guess might come up.
Speaker D
It's not much of a story.
Speaker C
I mean, I don't know, tea kettles and stuff.
Speaker D
Muscle or something. My leg, and it's been bothering me.
Speaker C
Really?
Speaker B
Yeah.
Speaker C
Quad or hammy? Which side?
Speaker D
It's on the left side, interior part of my upper thigh. It's probably lower than a groin, I would imagine, but I don't know, maybe it runs all the way down there. I don't care. I don't know.
Speaker B
Will you chat GPT with a. Where does the groin stop and start?
Speaker D
Okay, let's not.
Speaker C
If it's halfway between the knee and the hip socket, and below that, it's no good.
Speaker A
We should get you doing some stretches in here, Wyatt.
Speaker D
I probably should.
Speaker C
Maybe a thigh mask.
Speaker A
When's the last time you stretched?
Speaker B
Class?
Speaker A
Oh, five.
Speaker D
Yeah.
Speaker B
Oh, boy. Here we go.
Speaker C
What do we got?
Speaker E
Lower abdomen meets the upper inner thigh.
Speaker A
That's the groin in your lower abdomen?
Speaker D
Yeah. That's nowhere. I mean, we're down, but more by the knee.
Speaker B
Oh, really? Yeah.
Speaker C
So it's an inner quad muscle maybe, huh?
Speaker D
Yeah, Inner.
Speaker B
Did it have something to do with sleeping in the back your truck, or is it more because of hiking?
Speaker D
It could have done both. I don't know. Did a fair share of both this week.
Speaker B
You know what helps older guys pillow between their knees?
Speaker D
Is that what it is?
Speaker B
You might try that this next go Around Wyatt, Adam and I. Adam and I have got some go to little hints.
Speaker C
I've never slept that way in my life.
Speaker A
They make these really long pregnancy pillows. You can just.
Speaker B
Yeah.
Speaker D
They're long big body pillow and just.
Speaker B
Yeah.
Speaker D
Cuddle up with it. My canvas cutter.
Speaker B
Hey, laugh if you want. Might be it might help you get the best best night's sleep you've ever had.
Speaker D
It might.
Speaker B
Maybe I'll double pad, regular pad and then also your canvas cutter pad.
Speaker D
Probably could use a little thicker pad too. I mean that 4 inch memory foam on the bed of the truck, I.
Speaker C
Mean it gets old cold blue steel. Yeah, no doubt about it.
Speaker B
So anyway, Logan, how are you doing?
Speaker E
Doing good.
Speaker B
Good.
Speaker C
You got bloody over the weekend.
Speaker B
Yep. Yep.
Speaker E
Dad killed the buck. It was awesome. And now we're on to elk.
Speaker B
So do you ever get tired of helping your dad?
Speaker E
Yes. It would be nice to have the help reciprocate back at times, but I think we're getting there. I told you. I told him he's not allowed to draw a tag next year. So we'll see how that goes.
Speaker B
Yeah.
Speaker E
But no, it's been fun. It's been an awesome year. I learned a lot.
Speaker B
Yeah.
Speaker C
Yeah.
Speaker E
Place I've never been really so kicked my butt for a long time.
Speaker B
Did the gas money ever run out?
Speaker E
No.
Speaker B
No. You know what?
Speaker E
It's crazy.
Speaker B
Unlimited fun.
Speaker E
There it was. Yeah. He just basically gave me cars launch on a gas card and wow. Go find me a deer.
Speaker B
Wow.
Speaker E
It was great. I haven't paid for gas in months.
Speaker B
Yeah. Did you pay? How about mileage? Did he reimburse you for mileage?
Speaker E
He hasn't. I'm hoping that I get some.
Speaker B
He got the best of you.
Speaker A
He's got the triple account per diem going.
Speaker B
Sounds like a good dad deal if.
Speaker C
You kept the little yellow pad with all the days now.
Speaker B
Yeah, that's right. Somebody owes you some money.
Speaker E
I'll get it out of him one way or another.
Speaker B
That's good stuff. All right. So where are we at today, guys? We're gonna got to talk about some things. Bronson, what do you. What should we be talking about?
Speaker C
I don't know. Hunts are on. We'll get some stories in a minute, but maybe just a quick overview. What's going on? Why in the application world, Arizona, I guess, opened up for turkeys and hobbies and bison.
Speaker D
Yeah. So that's. That's up and going.
Speaker C
Is there any like pheasant and sandhill crane lumped into that or any weird.
Speaker A
Stuff I would know about that swan.
Speaker B
We do crane on this go around.
Speaker D
I don't think this will go around.
Speaker C
Okay, well, I say that now.
Speaker D
Yeah. Previous one.
Speaker C
Kind of interesting. You're playing for turkeys in September for next. Next April. May.
Speaker B
Well, it's a big deal. A lot of points associated.
Speaker A
Maybe I'll apply for Sandhill Crane.
Speaker B
You should. Guy like you. Oryx hunter.
Speaker C
Hey, when does that start?
Speaker A
December.
Speaker C
I thought you had October.
Speaker B
These are the things that Adam and I have been talking about.
Speaker C
Wow.
Speaker B
The state of the nation address with deer, elk, things like that. Why not? Why not do weird, weird stuff like what you're talking about? You know what I mean?
Speaker A
Cranes and oryx.
Speaker B
What else I mean? Bears. I'm out. Lions. Yeah. There's a lot. There's a lot of them. Yeah.
Speaker C
Cut a line track out in sheep country this last weekend. Same cannon. We killed a ram.
Speaker B
Yeah.
Speaker C
That's crazy fresh.
Speaker B
Hot. Wow. Yeah.
Speaker D
Probably jumped it. It was probably trying to snack on a good lamb right there.
Speaker B
Well, and sheep are so dumb. They'd be like, what's that? I walk up anyway, rub noses, make a little noise.
Speaker D
One of them could wipe out a whole herd.
Speaker C
Well, there's like one water source within five miles of any direction, so it's like.
Speaker B
Yeah.
Speaker C
Not too hard to lay in the weeds.
Speaker B
It's gonna eat what it wants. Yeah. Yeah. Pretty awesome. But there's a lot going on out there. We actually had a guy stop in a member stop in it killed a great bull.
Speaker C
Yeah.
Speaker B
Up on the penguins. Really cool, heavy sucker. Just awesome. But anyway, the elk hunts are going crazy. We're seeing. I mean.
Speaker C
What do you mean by going crazy?
Speaker B
Well, just meaning they're in full swing in all states. Like where's their state doesn't have an elk.
Speaker D
We could have left the word off.
Speaker C
Crazy just said the outcomes are going on.
Speaker B
They're going on, but are not like crazy. It seems a little bit tough.
Speaker C
Right? That's.
Speaker B
What. What do you.
Speaker C
What.
Speaker B
What.
Speaker C
Okay, let's just. Does anybody felt like the lack of jubilation, exuberation, you know, pictures, all that. Seems there's a few good Utah.
Speaker B
But it was kind of tough, eh?
Speaker D
Yeah. Guys. Seems like the rut was off to a kind of a slower start.
Speaker C
Yeah, they killed some. The biggest bulls were killed the first week of the archery when, you know, hunting them like deer. Basically.
Speaker B
Yeah.
Speaker C
And then it's been pretty tough since.
Speaker B
Yeah.
Speaker C
I don't know how Ben in New Mexico. We'll get that update here in a minute from.
Speaker B
We got a Wyoming update. Too. How'd that go, Devin?
Speaker C
He's not done yet. That's a 30 day season.
Speaker B
Still messing with it. Yeah.
Speaker A
Letting it.
Speaker C
Rip.
Speaker A
14 hour drive.
Speaker B
Yes. It's no joke.
Speaker C
Got those same types of pondering.
Speaker B
It makes a man out of you. It's. Yeah. How bad do you want it?
Speaker A
Or when you decide to leave and then you. 10 hours in, you're like, should I have left? Yes. Yes, you shouldn't. But yes, I should have.
Speaker B
You should always ask me. Because the answer is always yes. You're doing a good thing.
Speaker A
If I'd had service. I need Starlink or something.
Speaker B
Starlink is no joke. Anybody out there that doesn't have it, go. Go get it.
Speaker C
Call Jason. He's a distributor now.
Speaker B
Yeah, I just been using me. You'll get. You'll get it your first month free. What is it, Wyatt, that we get?
Speaker D
Well, I don't know. I had a text message saying you get the first month free if you refer a friend.
Speaker A
No wonder everybody's been trying to get me to do it.
Speaker D
Kind of like our membership.
Speaker B
Yeah.
Speaker D
Refer a friend, get in. Free ticket in.
Speaker B
That's right. By the way, we're running it.
Speaker A
Wyatt's really been pushing me to get Starlink. That makes sense.
Speaker D
Well, I just want to talk to you. I want an update. I mean, Archibald.
Speaker B
Yeah. Which is rare.
Speaker A
Which is rare. And I was.
Speaker B
But Archibald's over there. Like, I don't have very good service. And I'm thinking, you need Starlink guy.
Speaker A
Yeah, I would. I would be in my tent and all of a sudden my phone. I just. I'd get service and then nothing for hours.
Speaker B
That's crazy.
Speaker D
I like little updates out of Arch. He just likes to go dark. It's kind of hard.
Speaker C
It was good last week, hitting. Hitting Wyatt and getting response. Knowing he was in the boonies and he was still replying.
Speaker B
But you had a lot of service.
Speaker D
I did. I did have service. I did turn it on at times.
Speaker B
Did you?
Speaker D
Yeah.
Speaker B
Yeah. Pretty awesome. Anyway, so this mobile Starlink goes in your truck.
Speaker C
Yeah.
Speaker D
It's awesome.
Speaker B
Pretty incredible work.
Speaker D
While you're driving around.
Speaker A
Do you guys have the adapter that goes on the top that you just pop it into?
Speaker D
No, gosh, I just throw it on the dash.
Speaker E
If you got a sunroof, you can just slide the sunroof slider and shove it in there and close it up. Yeah, it's better than any mount they come up with. No rattle, no nothing.
Speaker B
Logan told me to get it and I'm not going to give him Credit for why I got it.
Speaker A
I have Bluetooth on my truck.
Speaker B
My other friends.
Speaker E
Anybody else credit me? No.
Speaker D
You do see them a lot more once you know what to look for. I mean, it seems like a lot of people are running them.
Speaker B
Yeah, a lot of hunters and stuff. Non stop service. Being able to talk and. Anyway, again, another one of those things that kill deer, kill sheep, kill elk. You know what I mean? Immediate responses, visits.
Speaker C
Video. Video clip.
Speaker B
Video clips. I sent Bronson video clips of what? Jason stuff. Janice. Sheep stuff. I mean, you know, it's nice to be able to.
Speaker A
Wherever you are.
Speaker B
Yeah. Wherever you are. Like, what do you think? Yeah.
Speaker A
Now I know if I call Wyatt and he doesn't answer this.
Speaker B
Oh, he's. He is up screening your face.
Speaker A
Yeah, he's swiping, but he answered. He answers like hello, that I was.
Speaker D
Out on a ridge glassing.
Speaker A
Yeah.
Speaker C
So you didn't even need it then.
Speaker D
No, I didn't.
Speaker C
It was back in your truck and you're up.
Speaker D
It's always in the truck.
Speaker A
So.
Speaker C
Yeah.
Speaker D
You can't say.
Speaker A
Imagine you with like a backpack.
Speaker C
I don't know if you had a horror.
Speaker A
Solar panels.
Speaker B
Solar does not like to miss much.
Speaker D
Not that dedicated to you thought.
Speaker C
Yeah, I was gonna say you thought Wyatt was on top of stuff before.
Speaker A
Oh, geez.
Speaker B
He ain't missing anything. No, he's good at it.
Speaker C
That's why I've thrown out a couple things I saw over the weekend. I'm surprised Wyatt said he didn't see it. That shocked me. Shocked me. About certain this or that. That got killed here or there and surprised me.
Speaker D
Yeah, it's pretty dialed.
Speaker C
You don't tell Wyatt new news very often.
Speaker B
No, it's pretty.
Speaker C
In the hunting world. You don't. It's.
Speaker B
He's. He's good at what he does, I think staying on top of something.
Speaker C
Sometimes he just pretends he doesn't know to make you feel good about killing him. Info maybe gets a different angle from you than he's heard in reality, but I don't think it's ever surprising him anyway.
Speaker B
So let's see. All right. So what are we gonna. What are we gonna talk about? We do have some hunts we're giving away Pretty awesome. Awesome lineup of hunts. Yeah.
Speaker C
That deadline. Well, what? Third?
Speaker B
Third. Fourth.
Speaker C
November 3rd.
Speaker B
November 3rd. An odd day.
Speaker C
Yeah, I think it's a Monday.
Speaker B
It's just we usually very short.
Speaker C
We usually do that while we're here in the office because we realize we've done them in the past years ago on A Saturday or Sunday and realize if somebody's got problems with the Internet or.
Speaker B
Yeah.
Speaker C
Where they're at, pick up, give us a call.
Speaker B
Yep. We're giving a Yukon doll sheep hunt away and Nevada mule deer hunt. Flat Rock Outfitters includes the landowner tag as well as a couple of Utah antelope tags. Just awesome little bit. Little lineup of hunts. We're going to do it somewhat on a regular basis anyway. 1 ticket for 30 bucks, 5 for 125, 10 for 250, and 30 for 500. Go to epicoutdoors.com to get in. Again, very short application period. Extremely short. All these hunts take place in 2026. Just kind of a. A bonus fall giveaway.
Speaker C
Something fun to do.
Speaker B
Yeah. Pretty awesome.
Speaker C
Simple as that. Yeah. Back to that Arizona thing, what we joked around. What's the deadline? October 7th, right?
Speaker D
7Th, yes.
Speaker C
Bison, heavy. Turkey, whatever. What not. So anyway, other than that, I mean.
Speaker B
What were you looking up there?
Speaker C
There's still some points.
Speaker B
The best javelina.
Speaker E
We don't have javelina unit rankings on our EPIC website. I think that that's travesty and I'm just trying to apply.
Speaker C
Logan, why don't you take that on and report back to us and tell us what you think?
Speaker E
The top official Epic javelina consultant.
Speaker B
Yeah.
Speaker C
All the calls we ever get.
Speaker B
I went down there and me. And you were there, too, and.
Speaker E
Yeah, Colton, too.
Speaker C
Don't you think all the calls we ever get here we should send to Logan?
Speaker B
Yeah.
Speaker C
Yeah.
Speaker E
Tell me what unit to put in for, and I'll take all the calls after. I'm experienced.
Speaker C
Okay.
Speaker B
Get with us after. Okay. Because there's. They're now accepted by Boone and Crockett, and it's a big deal. Which unit you want.
Speaker C
You actually begs the question, Wyatt, as an score, have you been sent an official score sheet yet and know what the minimums are for Pope and Young.
Speaker D
Or BNC saw that they come out with some information on it. I can't remember if there was a score sheet included.
Speaker C
Lions and bears. Are they gonna measure the tusks, too and add those?
Speaker D
No, it's just a length and width right there. They've actually logie's got it pulled up there. 14 and 516 is both the awards and all time.
Speaker C
It looks like 5:16.
Speaker A
Giant, you measure.
Speaker B
It's got to be over because there's no precedent set, so it's got to.
Speaker C
Be over a quarter. Like, where did that.
Speaker D
You measure all schools and 16.
Speaker C
I know, but, like, you don't have a minimum at a 5:16. It's like a round number most of the time. Like mountain goats. 50. It's not 49.
Speaker A
And I feel like 13. 16, 14 and a half.
Speaker C
Or a quarter.
Speaker A
Or a quarter.
Speaker C
It's a 1 16th over a quarter. Right.
Speaker D
Well, we're.
Speaker B
There's definitely experts out there, and that's not us, obviously.
Speaker C
I mean, that's just an interesting white name. Another one. That is such an odd number.
Speaker B
I know we measure them without the lower name.
Speaker C
One that an official entry in the book is on a really odd 5:16.
Speaker D
Like that, I believe schools. I think it'll be lions and bears.
Speaker C
Lions, 15. There's 21. There's the round.
Speaker D
Are they all round?
Speaker C
Well, Barrett pope and Young's 18 on a bear. I think BNC's 21 lion.
Speaker A
It might be a very specific size that.
Speaker B
Jeez.
Speaker A
Or consistent size.
Speaker B
How do you know all this?
Speaker D
Like, yeah, Cougar, your awards is going to be changed, too. Right there. You just had it pulled up there.
Speaker C
It's just as. Just like you said, Jason, there's a lot of javelina enthusiasts that put their. That a quarter wasn't good enough. It needed to be a 5 16.
Speaker D
Was that 14 and 8 16. So 14 and a half.
Speaker B
I can't tell how that is. That's a half.
Speaker C
At least five.
Speaker A
That looks like an eight.
Speaker E
They're stingy with the mountain line ones.
Speaker B
Yeah.
Speaker E
I don't want you to see them.
Speaker A
You're in the wrong Cougar and jaguar.
Speaker C
All right. Well, anyway, just seems like most of them, like mule deer. 190 and 230. What?
Speaker D
Yeah.
Speaker C
What else? I mean. Oh, 260 and 375.
Speaker B
Well, I think it should be 190 and an eighth. I mean, you know how many 190 evens are in there? How does that happen? Go ahead. Go ahead, Bronson. What are you saying? 230 evens.
Speaker C
A lot of. A lot of stuff.
Speaker B
Gets a lot of manipulating on the. On the back end. No, it doesn't happen. Come on.
Speaker C
Possibly. There's 181.
Speaker A
Imagine I'd still be happy if I kill the 229 and 7 8, but.
Speaker B
Yeah, let me kill one of them right now. It's hard right now. Oh, yeah.
Speaker A
You ever measured a 229 and 7?
Speaker D
I've measured some that have barely missed the book. Yeah.
Speaker C
Have you?
Speaker B
Yeah. You feel like a hill. Yeah. Don't you?
Speaker D
Doesn't make you feel very good, I guess.
Speaker B
No. They're not offering to buy you dinner.
Speaker D
Have to break the News to him. Yeah, we missed it by 3.8of an inch, but nothing.
Speaker B
Especially when they thought they killed a.238 buck.
Speaker D
Yeah, that's happened too.
Speaker B
Should have been well within the book. Wyatt, how'd this get beat down?
Speaker C
They're already. They're already taking, you know, glamour shots with their belt buckle. That they won.
Speaker B
Yes. Silver.
Speaker E
Bronze.
Speaker B
Anyway, silver turn to bronze. All right, moving right along. So let's. Let's talk about the elk.
Speaker C
Yeah. Devin, Devin, Devin.
Speaker B
You smashed a bull. We're going to get straight up to it, but not an easy year.
Speaker C
Like, overall, you had a second season, right?
Speaker B
Yes, 15th to the 24th.
Speaker A
I started the 17th.
Speaker B
The New Mexico Report. Yeah.
Speaker A
So I. I applied with one of our outfitters in the guide draw. Got lucky.
Speaker B
Okay.
Speaker A
I think I had 3 1/2% odds or something.
Speaker B
Is there anybody that gets luckier than Devon?
Speaker D
Devin draws some tags.
Speaker B
I'm serious.
Speaker A
You got to apply. It's not like the first come, first serve.
Speaker B
I mean, they stopped the whole. They did the whole resident non resident thing because of you.
Speaker A
I stayed up all night and Wyatt.
Speaker B
That'S what you said.
Speaker A
Maybe you got one.
Speaker B
Maybe I got.
Speaker A
We hit. Yeah, you can't.
Speaker B
I got an archery.
Speaker A
You can't call that luck. When Wyatt's waking up at 3am I'm staying up all night. We hit it hard.
Speaker C
Man, you guys were. Were you in your 20s that year still?
Speaker A
No, I've been in my 20s.
Speaker B
Oh, come on.
Speaker C
Well, that's.
Speaker B
How old are you?
Speaker C
That's been four or five years ago.
Speaker A
37.
Speaker B
Do I have to go to your Facebook profile? You will not be.
Speaker A
I'm gonna be 37, okay?
Speaker B
I'm like, do I need to go look up your birthday and your Facebook profile?
Speaker A
In fact, you even thought that I'm.
Speaker B
Yeah, I'm concerned.
Speaker D
I got called 50 twice in Alaska.
Speaker C
So what? By who?
Speaker D
Yeah, so it was that guy who.
Speaker A
Yeah, I remember that.
Speaker B
Was that offensive? Was it by one of them?
Speaker D
It kind of was offensive.
Speaker A
He was offended.
Speaker C
What did they say?
Speaker B
Was it by a local?
Speaker D
Stewed on it for a while. Anchorage.
Speaker B
Why would you care?
Speaker C
Did they call you 50? Or, hey, 50 year old? Or just, hey, old timer, what'd they call you?
Speaker B
No, no, it was like I was.
Speaker D
Sitting there at the dinner table and my kid sent me a snap, I guess. My wife sent me a Snapchat of my kid. I was looking at it and she looks over at my phone. It says, what she say, you have Snapchat? What are you, like 50?
Speaker B
And she's your waitress?
Speaker D
No, she was the other guy. So we, we'd met up with a group of people in Alaska that worked for the outfitter we were with up there.
Speaker B
Okay.
Speaker A
So just a friend of a friend.
Speaker D
A friend of a friend kind of deal. And he had his wife and kids at dinner with us. And I was just.
Speaker B
You don't think much of her.
Speaker A
You have Snapchat? What are you like 50?
Speaker D
Are you like 50?
Speaker B
That's funny.
Speaker D
Yeah, it was.
Speaker B
Yeah. By the way, I have Starlink too. Do you got that?
Speaker D
It stung a bit.
Speaker C
Wow.
Speaker D
So.
Speaker B
Ouch. She knows how to really hurt a guy. Yeah.
Speaker C
Kneecap stuff right there.
Speaker D
Yeah. So I had to come home, trim the beard up a bit, you know, get a little bit shorter, closer to the face.
Speaker B
Yeah.
Speaker D
Try to look a little bit younger.
Speaker C
Do a little comb in brown.
Speaker D
I didn't. Didn't go that far. No. Just for man.
Speaker B
All right.
Speaker C
Where. How did we get on that subject? But anyway. Yeah.
Speaker B
So there you are. You're 37 year old, young, strapping man, New Mexico. Three. Three.
Speaker A
Three and a half or something.
Speaker B
How does this happen?
Speaker A
It's not even that good of it. It's not like a talk.
Speaker B
No, I know.
Speaker A
It was my third choice.
Speaker C
Well, we preached that.
Speaker A
I was excited.
Speaker B
Yeah. Yeah. But you take 15 other units other than that.
Speaker A
Oh, yeah.
Speaker B
That was just one to go. Yeah.
Speaker A
But, yeah, so I started. I. I didn't hunt the first two days because I thought I was going to be somewhere else, which didn't end up panning out. And so. Yeah, I went down on the 17th and killed Saturday.
Speaker B
It's pretty crazy, the 20th, but it was. So it was a fast kill. Like on paper you'd be like, yeah, it was a great hunt.
Speaker A
Yeah.
Speaker B
The first.
Speaker A
So me and my, my dad went with me. He was. He wanted to go on another elk hunt with me and I called him, I said, there's really not. I don't think I'm gonna be here more than another day. And he was pretty. He was ready. He's been ready to go. So we, we went down there, we're setting up camp and you know when the guide draw. You can't hunt without a guide.
Speaker B
Yeah.
Speaker C
At least for your.
Speaker A
Legally. Yeah. So my guide was showing up that night or early in the morning to hunt the next day. And this, we're setting up camp and this bull is cranking right down the draw from camp and we're just like, this is gonna be incredible. We pick a random place to camp. Like we don't We've never been there. We don't really know. Anyways, that was the only bull we heard for the next 48 hours. I think we might heard one squeak the next afternoon or the next morning. But, yeah, it was pretty slow. It was tough. And I hunted Thursday morning in this. In this spot. And then I heard one bull bugle three times. I mean, that's. That's all you got? That's all I had.
Speaker B
Yeah.
Speaker A
And then I went back Friday because I wanted to be closer to where that bull was in the dark. And me and my dad go in there and it was just. It was on fire. They were cranking.
Speaker B
How does this happen overnight? Generally it takes a cold snap or.
Speaker A
It was supposed to rain on Friday.
Speaker B
They.
Speaker A
When I looked at the weather and it was kind of cloudy, but it didn't tempt. They felt it was something with the.
Speaker B
Weather, barometric pressure or something. They felt.
Speaker A
I think I drew back on one bull, let him go. And I. I didn't. I mean, three others within 40 yards. I didn't kill just bulls.
Speaker C
Six points. Just.
Speaker A
Just little.
Speaker B
And it's not like you're being like, extremely picky because it's A, it's a tough year. B, you're not.
Speaker A
Yeah. You don't go here to. You're not kill a. I mean, we've.
Speaker B
You're not. You're not holding out for a 370 bull?
Speaker A
No, no. I'm not passing bulls expecting to kill a giant.
Speaker B
But. But any of the units. You could kill a 350 bull or.
Speaker C
Something like that could.
Speaker A
You know, my brothers found one the morning I killed. They were further away and it was probably 3:40, kind of really dumber than crap side of the road.
Speaker B
You could have killed it.
Speaker A
Yeah.
Speaker C
Is that the day you killed?
Speaker B
Yeah. Are you like.
Speaker A
I like the bull I killed. I'm good.
Speaker B
Yeah.
Speaker C
It's cool.
Speaker B
Really cool.
Speaker C
So anyway, so what happens?
Speaker A
I get sucked into this nasty. You know how elk do that? They're just crazy. And.
Speaker C
Yeah, we're going down in there.
Speaker B
It's an easy go down.
Speaker A
And I'm like, I'm gonna go 50 yards. Maybe I'll see him. Then he's cranking again. I'm like, ah, just to that tree. Next thing you know, you're in the bottom.
Speaker B
Yeah.
Speaker A
You know, and anyways, chase bulls till 11, 11:30, noon.
Speaker B
Wow.
Speaker C
It was.
Speaker A
It was fun.
Speaker C
Those days go quick.
Speaker A
They do, man.
Speaker B
So how'd the routine go? Were you calling. What were you doing? A lot of people don't like, I Don't they just like, if they're talking, they want to just get.
Speaker A
I called in like there was bulls alone that were moving and I was cutting them off and if I felt like they were going to get past me, I'd cow call. And I called one in that way, but for the most part I was just silent. Yeah, they, they were doing all the talking. I didn't need to let them know I was even there. But the wind was just. That was one of those days too. Friday was every. Didn't matter what I did. The wind was bad. Like I left bulls because the wind go over here and it's going up the total opposite way. Like, I could not beat the wind that day. It just, it was just weird.
Speaker C
Did you stay in that canyon all day and hunt it that night?
Speaker A
No, I hunted there till like noon. They, they. It got kind of windy and they all shut up and I could hear. I thought I heard another hunter down there. Just got there late, you know, So I got out and then.
Speaker C
Little PVC pipe that night.
Speaker A
What'd we do that night?
Speaker B
Ate dinner.
Speaker A
Oh, I went to another spot that some, that Eric, the guy, the, the guide.
Speaker B
Yeah.
Speaker A
Saw a big bull.
Speaker B
Did he?
Speaker A
Yeah, he. And it was with another bull. So I, I hunted. I. I saw three bulls together. And he saw three bulls together that same morning. They were still together but kind of talking. Yeah, he had, he had a pair of them that went into some pines. And so I sat in there and.
Speaker C
This is like the 19th of September.
Speaker A
Yeah, that was the 19th. Next morning, go back to the same spot on Friday and hear one bull go over there. And he was just a five point, but he had like 10 cows let him go, kind of. He was. I had him at like 70 yards. Just sigh him and like, let's keep going, you know, go to the next one. And the next one was probably, I don't know, 500 yards away. And we, we actually like kind of boogied past him for the wind. And Eric was with me and we, we circle. As soon as we got that wind right, he was about to go off this rim and he cow called and he just fired back, just growler. Just, ah, you know, just, just. It's exactly what you want.
Speaker C
So he's probably along.
Speaker A
So I boogie in there. Yeah, I get. I know he's gonna probably go this way to the wind wall. But I had a lane to my left and right. And sure enough, dude, he come through this big snag. Loops his head back. And all I saw was like, he's a good looking bull. Like he's heavy, you know what I mean? I didn't see. He had a little.
Speaker B
Would you see all of.
Speaker C
I didn't see Cheater and a weird beam devil. It's like six.
Speaker A
It didn't matter. He came, he came through and I arranged this tree and just. It was just classic, man. Drew. Drew. While he went behind a tree. As soon as he came out the other side, I stopped him. And what Was it like 37 yards?
Speaker B
Flop, double lung.
Speaker C
Just.
Speaker A
I actually hit him in the heart.
Speaker B
You did? Wow.
Speaker C
Armpit.
Speaker A
Well, the funny thing is, so I shoot and I was like, ah. Well, was he perfectly broadside? Half his body was like covered by some oak leaves. Oak leaves. And I remember thinking like, just put it on because your arc, you know.
Speaker B
Yeah.
Speaker A
And it just tucked right in there. But I was like, ah. It might have been low because I couldn't see where it. When it hit, you know, because the. The leaves.
Speaker C
You heard it?
Speaker A
Oh yeah, I saw. And then I saw he. I saw him snap it off. When he turned it about, he snapped off like 8 inches. But go over there and you know, you. We wait a little while and then I walk like 10, 20 yards and it's just like one speck here, one spec there, and I'm like, like it's. I don't know. It felt good. But you doubt yourself, you know? So I. I probably went 50 yards, maybe 60 yards on his track. Found a shade spot, sat down for 45 minutes. I stand up.
Speaker C
Or was he there with you dad too?
Speaker A
Yeah, we were texting him, telling him to head our way. You know what I mean? And satellite text, by the way. I didn't even need Starlink. Yeah. Forgot the game bags. But anyways, sat there for 45 minutes. I stand up, I go look at the track. I look over, he's laying there dead. He didn't even go 100 yards.
Speaker B
Oh, wow. Didn't go Hunter.
Speaker C
It was awesome.
Speaker A
He was that close to falling off an absolute abyss of a like rolling type canyon. But yeah, it was fun. Just a classic call in a bull. I don't know. Like I've had that happen. But I passed him like on. On really good units, really good tags that I was really picky. And yeah, I went home without a bull.
Speaker B
Yeah.
Speaker A
Or one bull. I killed, like stalked him like a deer. Just.
Speaker B
Yeah.
Speaker A
You know what I mean? He was bedded. Snuck in there. When he stood up, I shot him. Just not a classic. Just like you would see on tv.
Speaker B
Yeah.
Speaker A
Slam dunk. But it was fun. I had a lot of fun.
Speaker C
That's awesome.
Speaker A
Yeah. Old sucker size teeth. I showed you a picture.
Speaker C
Yeah. The first picture I got was the upper jaw of an elk's roof of his mouth.
Speaker B
And they're disgusting.
Speaker D
They are.
Speaker A
It's kind of.
Speaker B
Usually there's grass.
Speaker C
I just usually send that as a first picture.
Speaker A
So I thought they would come together.
Speaker B
You say there was water everywhere? I mean probably everywhere. Feed everywhere.
Speaker C
Been raining, you mean?
Speaker B
A little bit different.
Speaker A
Yeah. This is hike. We were at 9, 000ft. Yeah.
Speaker C
But it was also puddles, late summer rains. I don't know what it's like.
Speaker A
And yeah, it looked.
Speaker B
I mean June, but awesome experience. You do it again?
Speaker A
I would do it again, yeah. Just a fun, fun elk hunt.
Speaker C
That's the thing about New Mexico is you're never burning points, trying to get X out of your points. You know, I gotta milk all the trophy potential out of my points or it was a waste of 10, 15, 20 plus years. It's never that.
Speaker B
That's right. Yeah.
Speaker C
If you're hungry, you're hungry for hungrier for attack. I mean it's hard to say three and a half percent. You got real aggressive. That's still pretty tough odds. But. But you know what I mean.
Speaker A
I could be wrong, but I thought that's what it was in my mind. But I'll have to look it up.
Speaker B
Whatever it was, it wasn't 10%.
Speaker C
Yeah.
Speaker A
And you know what's crazy? The thing I really liked. I saw two hunters the entire time.
Speaker C
That's what gives a hunting elk.
Speaker A
I saw two other hunters. They were hunting. Well, yeah, no, they were hunting elk.
Speaker B
But that country's.
Speaker A
I didn't see one camp with hunters in it that I was like, for sure those are hunters. They were mostly just families and people camping or whatever.
Speaker B
That's a popular place to just go.
Speaker A
I mean the, the where I went, I was walking down a road. It wasn't even closed. There hadn't been a. A truck on it or anything for.
Speaker C
It wasn't even a closed road.
Speaker A
Nope. Wide open forest service main road. And I just walk it and call bulls.
Speaker C
And that's why they call it the land of Enchantment.
Speaker A
It was cool. I don't know.
Speaker B
Were you in the right unit?
Speaker A
Did you ever crush? I might have just been lucky.
Speaker B
Or like you're like either the season's not on.
Speaker A
Oh my God. Straight up, he's like, devin, are you sure this hunt's going on? Because there's nobody here. I'm like you're right. But yes, it's the same every year. 15th to 24th. Yeah, it was fun. All my brothers were there. They came the next day. So it was fun to have two of my brothers there. My dad.
Speaker C
Did you cut him up next day?
Speaker A
No, they were there the day before. Oh, they were there.
Speaker C
That's what I meant. Yeah. Okay.
Speaker B
They cut him up right then and drive to him or what?
Speaker C
You have a hard pack? Far pack.
Speaker A
We just quarter even here. You go to a brother and they'd walk into the truck about 200 yards.
Speaker B
Oh man, that's awesome.
Speaker A
But I'm telling you, there are some.
Speaker C
There's a lot.
Speaker A
If he would. If he would have had a little bit more life, we'd have been there a long time.
Speaker C
Yeah, he had made up some hurry downhill.
Speaker A
Perfect spot.
Speaker B
Did you take some pictures like in a backpack where you're packing him out? You know, social media stuff?
Speaker A
No, no, I didn't film anything.
Speaker B
Actually.
Speaker A
I didn't have anything. Yeah, I was just there running and gunning.
Speaker C
He was too pretty scarred about some of those GoPro videos he took last. The last outcut.
Speaker A
Some things you don't need to relive, you know?
Speaker B
Yeah. What happened on those?
Speaker A
Draw back and a bull just drawn back on a bull like five times. Not getting a shot.
Speaker B
Yeah.
Speaker C
Cows blowing you well too.
Speaker B
Video tells the truth.
Speaker A
And GoPro audio. GoPro audio is.
Speaker B
Picks up everything. Picks up.
Speaker C
Well on yourself and the animal.
Speaker A
You've done it. You have a kill shot.
Speaker C
Trust me, I know it sounds like you're.
Speaker A
And then you're. You know, you never know if you forgot to hit stop recording and you're taking a leak in the bushes. And Logan gets the video. It's pretty soon it's like warned me.
Speaker D
It'S on the dark web.
Speaker B
Sorry, but I had to go.
Speaker C
Anyway. I thought I hit stop.
Speaker B
Oh, funny stuff.
Speaker C
That's cool.
Speaker B
Any other questions? Any other details we need to know from. Oh, Devin.
Speaker C
It's a good poke down there. Doesn't matter where you go, but it's got anything.
Speaker D
I think he told a good story.
Speaker B
You're still working on some hunts, right? So am I. We're all out and about.
Speaker D
Yeah. It's the heat of it right now.
Speaker B
Yeah. We'll talk about Janet.
Speaker C
Give us two. Two and a half weeks.
Speaker B
Yeah. Janet killed a desert sheep. That was kind of a highlight for the year. We just kind of letting that settle for a minute. Pretty. Pretty awesome. It's fun to go do those kind of hunts. Well, yeah, it's it's so fun.
Speaker A
That's the reason I wish I had Starlink, because, like, then you get service later and everybody's already seen you. Kind of feel like you missed out on the party.
Speaker B
Yeah. So fun.
Speaker A
That was fun.
Speaker B
Let's. I think we should dial up your old man. Logan. Yeah, he's always good for a good story.
Speaker E
You try it.
Speaker C
Get something out of him.
Speaker B
Let's see if we can. Yeah, he killed a deer, Nevada. And that's rare right now. Yeah, killing a deer in Nevada is kind of rare. It was a grind, but maybe old Paul give us some words of encouragement, give us some counseling.
Speaker C
Don't say that word. He'll put us on the clock. Bill us.
Speaker F
Hello.
Speaker B
Hey, we need some counseling, dude.
Speaker F
You're not the only one.
Speaker B
What do you charge per hour?
Speaker F
I don't charge nearly enough.
Speaker C
Okay.
Speaker B
Does it come with like a money back guarantee if you don't fix my life?
Speaker F
Oh, no. It just keeps you coming back for more. It's kind of like hunting. You go out and you do okay, but you just got that gut feeling that you just got to do more.
Speaker B
Yes. That's what you guys are good at. Shrinks are good at, just not. If we could just have a few more sessions, we'll get you squared away.
Speaker C
You give me two more months, two days a week, two months, we'll have.
Speaker B
You thinking like a normal red blooded American.
Speaker F
It depends on what time of year, though, because sometimes during the year you just need to have some days off.
Speaker B
So do you ever convert these Democrats over to Republicans or anything like that, Paul?
Speaker F
See, see, now that's. That's an area that I just rarely. I don't. You don't talk politics.
Speaker B
You don't talk politics.
Speaker F
Don't talk politics, don't talk religion. It's kind of like because that's dating, you know, it's that sort of stuff.
Speaker B
Yeah. If you got them to switch over, they'd probably quit coming and they'd be. Their lives would be better.
Speaker F
That's probably true. That is probably absolutely true.
Speaker B
Less revenue, right?
Speaker C
Yeah. There's a really high chance of a one and done. If you get into the Dem in the counseling session, that's your only check you're ever getting from them. That one session you're not. You're not getting. They're not coming back.
Speaker B
None of you reveal what you really think.
Speaker F
Yeah, I. I've done some one and dones before.
Speaker B
Have you?
Speaker F
Yeah. Yeah.
Speaker C
Well, all right. Truth. Hey, the truth sometimes just hurts, right?
Speaker F
But. But the truth Also is most people are more complicated than that, but it's. That's okay.
Speaker B
Do you ever tell them. Tell them the truth.
Speaker C
It's kind of like.
Speaker B
Do you ever cut to the chase and really give it to them?
Speaker C
Well, you got it. I mean, that's.
Speaker F
Yeah. I'm. Honestly, I'm kind of famous for that.
Speaker B
Are you?
Speaker C
Yeah.
Speaker B
Well, that's good. Little dose of reality.
Speaker F
Yeah. I. I just say it like it is, and people get mad, and they either come back or they don't.
Speaker B
But, look, you brought this on yourself. And counseling ain't gonna help you.
Speaker F
Right. Right. Make some changes.
Speaker B
All right, all right, all right. Just teasing. Making light. You. You're a good shrink. You're a good shriek.
Speaker F
We'll see.
Speaker B
Hey, tell us a deer story. Like, it's rare to kill a deer in Nevada.
Speaker C
I heard he killed the first white. He killed the first whitetail ever killed in Nevada. It's all pictures, you know, things.
Speaker F
It's true. I. I mean, it was a mule deer, but it pretty much looked like a whitetail.
Speaker C
It's wild.
Speaker B
Yeah. Pretty cool. Heavy sucker.
Speaker F
Yeah, it's a cool deer. It. It is.
Speaker B
So.
Speaker F
So I. Well, it was a grind. I'm telling you. What. We. We camped a long ways from where we were hunting. We were driving, like, 65 miles from Camp to hunt.
Speaker C
What? No wonder Logan, you. Now, Logan told us he had a blank check with a gas card. Now we know. Now we know why. He was just circling the unit twice a day.
Speaker F
Right. We did, too. And we'd leave Tampa like 5am and get back at 10pm most days, but.
Speaker B
He was staying in Utah. You were camped in Utah. You there. There you go. You're back on Bluetooth.
Speaker F
I'm back.
Speaker B
Yeah. You were camped in Utah. In all fairness, you were driving. Willingly driving.
Speaker F
Yeah, it was. It was a willing thing. Yeah, I do. I'd do it different if I had to do over again, but. Yep, I drove that far on purpose.
Speaker B
Daily.
Speaker F
Yeah, daily.
Speaker B
Yeah.
Speaker E
Let me correct something here. He sat in the passenger seat and slept from about 5 to 6am and Logan drove and was on his second monster by the time we got to the actual deer spot.
Speaker B
Wow.
Speaker F
When you get old, that's what you have to do.
Speaker C
Yeah. Yeah, Logan. I mean, that's what you do to spend priceless time with your dad.
Speaker E
Highly favored in the will.
Speaker B
Broken down truck. That's what you're gonna get.
Speaker F
See, we had that discussion, too, because, you know, all my kids, they. They can't say anything good about my. My new Truck. They are always just dissing on it.
Speaker B
Chevy. What is it the. Is it a 1500 ZR2?
Speaker F
Yeah. Yeah.
Speaker B
It's with the 62 gasser and I can't believe the gas mileage you're getting.
Speaker C
What are you dissing on Logan?
Speaker E
I. I'd never dissed on it before. I love it.
Speaker F
He's lying.
Speaker C
He's. He wants the truck at his will.
Speaker B
All the. Exactly. All the while. Logan had to get his fix, right?
Speaker E
I had to have a Ford. I had to have a Ford towed back to town. It's okay. It happens. Sometimes you have six plugs go out all at once and you just got to get them fixed.
Speaker B
Wasn't it coils?
Speaker A
Coil.
Speaker B
Yeah.
Speaker F
So one of Logan's buddies was with us and I. I mean, I just told him he's in line for the truck because all my. My boys are like not in line for it because they can't say anything good about it.
Speaker B
Yeah, there you go.
Speaker E
He's giving away stuff to free to people who don't even relate to us.
Speaker B
You're gonna die tomorrow, Paul. You got some life. I know.
Speaker C
It's not even blocked.
Speaker B
You're fine.
Speaker E
Fortune favors the picture.
Speaker F
I'm good.
Speaker B
Good. Healthy guy. Got a few. Got a few ailments here and there. But you're.
Speaker F
I got a battery. I got a battery that runs my heart, but it's fine.
Speaker B
Yeah, you're dealing with a pacemaker and 14 other things. Yeah, you're fine. You're fine.
Speaker F
If. If I go into afib again, we're just going to hook the jumper cables to my. My chest and get me back on track.
Speaker E
That's what they do anyway.
Speaker B
Jeez. Remotely. Right? Can't they do it from Elon Musk system or something?
Speaker F
They could. They could with. They can put a pacemaker in that does that, but mine doesn't.
Speaker B
Geez. So anyway, I'm conversing you with quite regularly on Starlink. That's the one thing is you guys call at weird hours of the night when you're driving. I mean, they're driving for hours and they're like wanting to talk and they're.
Speaker C
Trying to stay away.
Speaker B
So I can't. I can't screen your call and feel good about it, you know?
Speaker F
I know.
Speaker E
We were just checking on you. We wanted to see how you were doing.
Speaker B
Well, we were good. Okay.
Speaker F
It's true.
Speaker E
Just make it sure.
Speaker B
So anyway, you drew this tag regular draw. Odds were way against you. You get the tag. Kind of a tough year. But you guys Scouted a lot, John. Scouted a lot.
Speaker F
Yep. We grinded it out. We ran a bunch of cameras. We didn't really find a deer in scouting that we wanted to shoot. And so the first day we were driving along and, well, we. We went and looked in this one area, and anyway, we didn't find anything. And so we drove down to this other area and spent the rest of the day there. And on the way home, we're going down this graded road, and two big old bucks run across the road in front of us.
Speaker B
I think. I think you called me within a minute of that.
Speaker F
I. I think you're right. And it was in. I mean, it was a flat.
Speaker B
But you guys don't take very good video. I was gonna say, I don't know. Can't see anything. Logan, will you. Did you take that video?
Speaker E
With my youthful eyes, I could see everything I needed to.
Speaker C
Well, you had your mind playing it back while you're watching video. You actually had seen it.
Speaker B
I realized it's like, okay, use your imagination. Here's some video tree. And I think I see a deer.
Speaker C
I'm not sure anyway, but regardless, that's where you're gonna start focusing time. Right?
Speaker F
So all of a sudden, we're like, okay, now we have a spot to hunt, but we don't know how to hunt it. And because there's. There's no vantage points, you can't climb on a hill and glass when you've got cedar trees and sagebrush everywhere. So there was about 50 yards of visible landscape on the side of each road. And so the next morning, we went there and we saw some more deer, a couple of nice bucks, not the same deer we saw the night before. And we figured out there was a little loop that we could take. We could drive down the graded road, go up this two tracker, and. And then go back and forth. And we did that like 12 times a day.
Speaker C
Sounds like a tactic Wyatt coined is slow rolling the pie.
Speaker E
What did I say?
Speaker B
Definitely slow rolling the pines.
Speaker F
We were definitely slow rolling the pines.
Speaker B
Miners style. Minersville style.
Speaker F
The thing of it is, is Logan, his slow and my slow are very different.
Speaker B
Yeah, well, you've got it perfected. No, these young kids don't know how to do it.
Speaker E
He's gotten. He's gotten weak and scared in his old age, and I know how to get places.
Speaker C
Well, he's probably just cussing you because that ZR2 doesn't have a cruise control that sets at two and a half miles an hour.
Speaker B
Yeah, you've got it's 25 or 25.
Speaker E
Plus that one will go down to 15.
Speaker B
It will, yeah.
Speaker E
15 wouldn't let me go any lower.
Speaker B
All right.
Speaker F
The hill descent control doesn't work on flat ground.
Speaker B
Jeez.
Speaker F
So.
Speaker C
So you're just.
Speaker F
Anyway, so we keep doing that and we see some deer and we can't get a shot. And we see some deer and we can't get a shot because it's like you see them and they take one step and they disappear for days.
Speaker C
But if you walk in there on foot, they're blowing everywhere and you're.
Speaker F
Yeah, you can't. It's like walking on gravel.
Speaker B
You did track the two big ones to their wild.
Speaker F
I did, yeah. The next day. Yeah, the next day after the two big ones I did. I got on the tracks and I tracked them right to their water, which is. We didn't know about that. And we kept hunting it and we'd see we had this one group of deer. There were four bucks and one of them, it looks like a whitetail also. It's a giant three point and it is a cool deer. It's got like 8 or 9 inch eye guards and just what. And low. You know. And so anyway we didn't. We just kept passing, passing, passing. Finally, I don't know what day it was. We saw two, two bucks and both of them were shooters. And so they came out and stood at 130 yards and I missed.
Speaker B
Wow.
Speaker F
It just about killed me.
Speaker C
That's an open sight state. So I'm. I'm not even.
Speaker F
Yeah, it's very doable just for even. I just flat missed. And we come to find out that my Williams peep had accidentally got turned a little and. Yep. And it was off. So I resided, got things back on track. And anyway we went back to hunting.
Speaker B
Okay.
Speaker F
And so we. We making the loops around there and we come across these deer. This was Saturday morning and this was a buck we'd never seen before. And so Lane and Logan are trying to look through the their binoculars at this deer. And I got out and I think they would have tied me in the truck if they could have, but they couldn't. So.
Speaker E
And all you know, he's telling us for him when he gets out, we're.
Speaker B
In charge of judging because you've got stuff's dying.
Speaker E
When he in charge of making the shooter don't shoot call.
Speaker C
So when he's hit, I think there's.
Speaker B
Five legit long times we had.
Speaker E
We had the discussion about trigger words that you don't Say that will get the trigger pulled as soon as the. Well, because the day before, like split beams. The day before when he'd missed. I was with him when that deer came out.
Speaker B
And I'm looking and I'm like, I'm.
Speaker E
Like, I think he's a good buck and he's got cheaters.
Speaker B
Boom.
Speaker E
And I'm like, hey, cheaters is a trigger word. We don't say cheaters until we're sure of what it is. And it turns out, come to find out, five points is also a trigger word. And we found that out.
Speaker B
That's a good little five pointer right there.
Speaker C
He's a cool. He got a cool extra.
Speaker E
He can pick it up from there.
Speaker C
What about 8 inch eye guards? I heard that a minute ago.
Speaker E
That, that.
Speaker A
Well, that's a trigger.
Speaker E
We started driving past that three point and he's getting out of the truck and I just took off.
Speaker C
8 inch eye guard.
Speaker E
It was a sweet buck.
Speaker B
It was.
Speaker E
Yeah, it was awesome. It's a big three point.
Speaker A
Is it with nine inch high guards?
Speaker E
I don't know about that, but it's big.
Speaker C
At least seven.
Speaker E
Yeah. Have you seen that bucket office, that three by four in my office? I'll have to come look after very similar.
Speaker C
I've got one in my office with about five. Devonshire's about five. Five and a half five.
Speaker D
Yeah, they're.
Speaker B
They look three points this year. Trophy bucks on any year. On normal year. Like the drought creates big old fours.
Speaker A
Down to three great eyeguards.
Speaker B
Yeah, it does. Right? And real potential. Maybe a couple of nubs where the four use come out or what?
Speaker C
Yeah, something pearling gets killed this stuff.
Speaker B
It does. This is tough here. So anyway. Right, well.
Speaker D
Right.
Speaker F
So I'm out of the truck and I hear a five inch. He's got. He's got an inline five or something. I don't know what he said. He's got five points on one side. Well, that was it. That's all I needed to hear.
Speaker B
Boom.
Speaker F
And I threw up the gun freehand and dumped him right there. And he dropped and it was over that fast.
Speaker C
That's this. That's the butt.
Speaker B
Okay.
Speaker C
I didn't know where there are. That's this.
Speaker E
But we were there faster than any of us except expected to be.
Speaker B
This was like what, 80 yard shot? 50.
Speaker F
60 probably.
Speaker B
50.
Speaker F
60, top pin.
Speaker C
Well, there it was.
Speaker B
Yeah.
Speaker C
So Logan, you were there. Was one of your other boys there? Paul? No, just you.
Speaker F
Logan. Logan. One of my buddies, Lane and one of Logan's buddies, McCoy.
Speaker C
Gotcha.
Speaker F
Pretty awesome.
Speaker B
Pretty fun.
Speaker F
Yep. It was awesome. We had a good time.
Speaker B
It was worth it. You do it again?
Speaker C
Of course.
Speaker F
Oh, you absolutely do it again.
Speaker B
That's awesome. Yeah, I love it. All right. Now, how's the elk hunt look overall? What do you think about, well, elk hunting?
Speaker F
The out. The elk hunt is tough. I have one bull that I'm hunting, and we haven't been able to turn him up.
Speaker B
Okay.
Speaker F
When I've been there, we sent Logan's buddy McCoy out there one day just to check, and he drove right on him 100 yards and took an hour's worth of video of him.
Speaker B
Jeez.
Speaker F
And anyway, we're. We're hunting in an area where I think there are 25 total elk and probably a. I don't even know, maybe a 10. 10 mile radius. Who knows? Yeah. So the elk are. And they. And the rut is poor. The rut is very, very slow. And with the drought, I'm a little worried the cows aren't going to cycle or they're not going to cycle normally. And so we're just. I don't know. Tomorrow we're gonna hit it again, and we got till we got like eight days left, so we're gonna go try to turn that bull up every day and get him killed.
Speaker B
Yeah. Geez. So you've had a month, month and a half. It must be nice. You know, you've been out for how long you've worked, how much?
Speaker F
Well, I work today.
Speaker C
Probably some problems fixing in the world.
Speaker B
Well, let's see. September. It's September. What? 22nd today.
Speaker F
22Nd. You worked. The last day I worked before today was September 9th.
Speaker B
Geez.
Speaker F
I don't have to be back to work till October 6, but I will get back before then.
Speaker B
Sign me up. So there's gonna be some Dems that need your help.
Speaker A
Can you imagine going to talk to Jason like, hey, I got problems.
Speaker B
Yeah, you do. Yes, you do.
Speaker A
Yes, you do, son.
Speaker B
Starts with your politics.
Speaker F
So, yeah, we'll.
Speaker B
We'll get.
Speaker F
We'll get things going.
Speaker B
All right. Wow. I love it. I love it. You guys are on here in a.
Speaker C
Few days or a week.
Speaker B
Fun to visit with Logan.
Speaker C
Make sure you get the bigger game bags in this next time.
Speaker B
Oh, yeah.
Speaker C
For the elk.
Speaker B
Don't worry. I'll take care of it.
Speaker C
Wait, that was Devon.
Speaker B
What I like is just that you guys are out having a good time. You know what I mean? Like what hunting's really supposed to be about, not about score and every. Everything else. And of course, drought. Drought Years are hard, but, man, and you. And you guys have killed your fair share of giants anyway, so whatever. Nobody cares, right? Right. Yeah. Yeah. No, I'm just teasing you.
Speaker F
Yeah, I care a little.
Speaker B
I know we do.
Speaker F
So it's okay.
Speaker B
Pretty darn fun to bring a Nevada buck back. Back to Utah where he belongs, right, Wyatt?
Speaker F
That's right. That's right.
Speaker B
It's kind of fun. Devin brought a New Mexico bull back to Utah where he belongs to. Right?
Speaker F
I had a boy. Gavin.
Speaker A
Yes, sir.
Speaker B
Isn't that awesome?
Speaker F
Yeah.
Speaker B
Might even bring a Wyoming bull back to Utah where he put him where he belongs.
Speaker C
Cowboy state. Come on.
Speaker F
Might as well, right?
Speaker B
I don't know. They all belong in Utah.
Speaker F
That's right.
Speaker B
All right.
Speaker E
Hey, just to give you a heads up so you can clear your schedule, I'm applying for any legal weapon javelina here in February, so.
Speaker F
Okay.
Speaker C
He's looking for a dual out.
Speaker B
He's saying that you owe him some time.
Speaker A
Logan's gonna miss the expo because he's gonna be hunting javelin.
Speaker B
I got stuff to do and I'm thinking you're needing. You're needing Logan's gas card. That's what I'm thinking.
Speaker F
Yeah, I think so.
Speaker C
Turnabout's fair play. You go to Arizona. Logan give him a gas card, he.
Speaker E
Could sit in the passenger seat like he always does.
Speaker F
Fair is fair.
Speaker C
Well, anyway, I just want to see you eat that thing. That's what I want to see.
Speaker B
What the heavy. You do have to eat them, Paula. You can't like their game animal.
Speaker E
They make good bacon.
Speaker F
I know, I know.
Speaker B
They make you. They make you eat the lions. Okay? People have lost hunting privileges. Over. Want waste wildlife on a lion.
Speaker F
Oh, we'll put enough onions and garlic in it. We can make it taste good.
Speaker B
Don't think you can make it taste good. I don't.
Speaker F
I don't think so either.
Speaker B
I don't. I don't think it makes good summer sausage jerky. Or any of it.
Speaker F
I. I heard that you can make antelope taste good. Although I've never figured that one.
Speaker C
Antelope or the East? That's cake compared to.
Speaker A
Tell you the secret. I'll share the secret with the world. Kill him fast. Put them on ice within a half hour.
Speaker B
That's what we did. And we're gonna find out.
Speaker A
You're gonna find out.
Speaker B
Sean's. We killed him fast. Put him on ice.
Speaker C
Haven't had him, huh, Janet?
Speaker A
Well, I remember you texting.
Speaker B
We ought to talk to Janet about animals. Antelope meat what she really thinks first.
Speaker A
Her first animal she ever shot was antelope.
Speaker B
Really?
Speaker C
I just figured, all right, if she's gonna stick, this hunting thing's gonna stick, I might as well do antelope. You can draw it quickest.
Speaker B
Yes.
Speaker C
And it would. Yeah, she'll tell the same story.
Speaker B
I mean, you can't hardly get Janet to eat elk. She's a beef girl. You know what I mean? Straight up ranch girl. And anyway, pretty fun. Yeah, moose is good. She'll eat moose and she'll eat elk. She ain't much for deer. Yeah. All right. Okay. Paul, are you back? How's that?
Speaker F
I'm good.
Speaker B
Keep that starlink going. Hey, tell me, when do you go from the 50 plan to 150 plan? Like, how much talking can you do? Or do you download too much?
Speaker C
Or what's the only movies that's going to hurt you about it?
Speaker F
So my. I think my allotted plan started September 2nd, and I have a 50 gig plan. And I think it was about September 9th when we hit. No, wait, not September 9th. It would have been like the 14th where we hit the 50 gig plan.
Speaker B
How do you know when you hit it? Do they email you and say you're out 12 days?
Speaker F
I don't know. I didn't let it get that far. So you can go on and choose overage. And so now I'm on a dollar.
Speaker E
A gig for every gigabyte over 50.
Speaker B
Really? Yeah.
Speaker E
But what kills you is he streams football games at the trailer at night.
Speaker C
Okay, that'll get you. I was gonna say that's.
Speaker E
Without it. Without it, you're probably lucky to use 10 a day. Between two. Two of you, 10, we.
Speaker F
We were average.
Speaker B
Can you get in your account and see how much you've used?
Speaker D
Yeah, I think.
Speaker F
Guys, I'm gonna go looking right now.
Speaker A
How many gigs do you use in a day, Wyatt?
Speaker D
Okay, I've used two in my last billing period.
Speaker A
Two?
Speaker C
Two gigs out of the 50?
Speaker B
Yeah.
Speaker E
I'm on the 10 plan.
Speaker C
And it's. Was that a full 30 days? What?
Speaker D
Let's see.
Speaker B
I'm looking at mine.
Speaker C
Yeah. What?
Speaker F
In 20 days?
Speaker B
How do you know?
Speaker F
Since September 2nd. I have used 97 gigabytes. Since September 2nd?
Speaker C
Geez.
Speaker D
Yeah, I. I used a total of three gigs.
Speaker B
How do I go? Where do I go?
Speaker E
Here.
Speaker D
Go to your account here.
Speaker E
Subscription.
Speaker D
Oh, no.
Speaker B
Oh, I gotta keep. I gotta keep him logged in doing so. There you go.
Speaker D
So I click.
Speaker B
Mine has a subscription right here.
Speaker D
Yep. Subscriptions.
Speaker B
You there, Paul?
Speaker D
Daddy?
Speaker C
Usage. He's gone.
Speaker B
18 September 2nd. That's not bad. I'm doing good.
Speaker A
Did we hang up on him?
Speaker B
Yeah, probably did.
Speaker C
Well, Logan, you get him back when that bull's on the ground.
Speaker B
Yep.
Speaker C
We'll have a story, get a live start.
Speaker B
We better just say goodbye. Swear. Not rude.
Speaker F
Hello?
Speaker B
Logan accidentally hung up on you. He's running the keyboard accidentally on purpose.
Speaker F
I know. He. He's tired of hearing my voice.
Speaker B
I've used 18 since September 2nd.
Speaker F
Yeah, so.
Speaker B
I mean, but that's like you're not watching.
Speaker C
You're not watching football games and stuff. Why? You're not watching anything.
Speaker B
That's a waste of money.
Speaker A
You don't check your. Your fantasy league and all that.
Speaker B
It's a straight face waste of money. I'm just. He's timing my kids.
Speaker C
I'll be watching the Ryder cup this weekend.
Speaker B
All right.
Speaker F
There you go.
Speaker B
All right. All right, Paul, you know, why hit us up when you got something on the ground again? You there, Logan?
Speaker C
You hung up on him again.
Speaker F
Y. The wrong button. Yeah, I'll let you know.
Speaker C
Sounds good, Paul. Good luck.
Speaker F
Okay, talk to you later.
Speaker A
See it in.
Speaker B
All right. Pretty fun stuff. Always a good time.
Speaker C
Yeah, good.
Speaker B
Always a good time.
Speaker C
What?
Speaker B
Geez, I did have an epic pack out. It looks. It looks big.
Speaker C
What is it?
Speaker A
It's not that big, but.
Speaker B
Dude, throw that picture up. Throw that. Use that picture for.
Speaker C
Do we have your permission to be the podcast announcement?
Speaker A
What do you mean?
Speaker C
When. When we know this podcast is live.
Speaker E
When Logan pushes go on Instagram post.
Speaker A
Yeah, yeah, there's better pictures, but.
Speaker C
Well, I know just that.
Speaker B
Do we have rights to your image? It's going to cost us an army.
Speaker D
How much is going to cost getting to sign on the ax?
Speaker B
You signed something here that give us.
Speaker A
You're just saying that because I didn't let you use the video from the last podcast.
Speaker B
What video was it?
Speaker D
You're getting attacked by the wasp in his yard.
Speaker B
That was something.
Speaker A
Logan didn't even ask.
Speaker B
Did you didn't show Janet the video yet?
Speaker A
Yet I haven't.
Speaker B
Well, she says she's got to see it. I do have to see it.
Speaker A
I was in a desperate situation. I was.
Speaker B
Doorbell, camera. I mean, come on.
Speaker C
Front, back, stuff thrown. Yeah.
Speaker B
All right. So anyway, overall, elk. Elk hunt's been tough. Deer hunt's been a little bit tough, depending on where you're at.
Speaker C
What's next, Jason?
Speaker B
I don't know. Antelope, maybe.
Speaker C
Deer, maybe.
Speaker B
I don't know. Yeah, I've got a deer tug.
Speaker C
I mean, but a couple Kids don't.
Speaker B
Make women and children. Got stuff going everywhere.
Speaker C
What's next? Deer or Antelope?
Speaker B
I don't know.
Speaker C
Next week. Let's have some report. Okay.
Speaker B
I don't know.
Speaker C
Bring back some death and destruction probably.
Speaker B
I could go to Antelope anytime. I'm just waiting for Sean. That's what really matters. Letting him figure out his work schedule. Yep.
Speaker C
Let him drive up while you sleep in the passenger side.
Speaker B
That's what. You know what's funny? You know what's funny? I'm the opposite.
Speaker C
Yeah.
Speaker B
I ain't letting him drive.
Speaker A
I was gonna say I can't even imagine.
Speaker B
It doesn't happen.
Speaker C
Yeah.
Speaker B
I will drive. I will drive and. And be hitting the rumble strips tired, and I will not let them kids drive the minute he gets in there. It's not like I do it, although it's just fine. He does a great job. He knows what he's doing. I just. I'm just at. That guy. Is it. Do. Do I strike you as that guy?
Speaker C
Absolutely.
Speaker B
Yes. Bronson, would you let Ty drive?
Speaker C
Yeah, but I don't know. We don't.
Speaker A
Do you let Jana drive?
Speaker B
Like if you go somewhere when we go to dinner.
Speaker A
Really?
Speaker B
Yeah.
Speaker E
She drives you to dinner.
Speaker B
Because when I go to dinner, my. My. Mentally, I. We don't have to hit the stoplight just right. We don't have to pass the cars just right.
Speaker C
Like there's no point in drafting.
Speaker B
No, but when we're going to do something when it's like a. Like I need to drive.
Speaker C
When you're in charge of what you're.
Speaker B
Going to do, like if we need to make it to St. George on time before the store closes, like I need to drive. And. And she's great. She's great. There's nothing wrong with her driving. But then when we go to dinner, I like to be driven around town.
Speaker C
Becky drives all the time. And most of the time.
Speaker B
Yeah.
Speaker C
When she'll also get car sick, we travel. Like if I go to want to sell or somewhere and I'm driving down the center fell windy, and I leave the cruise at 84 degree or 84 miles an hour, she gets car sick.
Speaker B
Yeah.
Speaker C
There's a lot of times she drives.
Speaker B
When we're unloading the boat. Like I unload the boat, I go around, get in the boat. Like, you know what I mean? Go back and she'll park the truck. But like, you know, I just want things way out on them, you know? Anyway. All right. All right. Let's call it a day. We. We're we got a lot going on. We're killing animals. We've already.
Speaker C
But in seven days we got five or five or six animals to report on.
Speaker B
It'll be fun, huh? It's a good time.
Speaker C
Next six.
Speaker B
Why you need to be a little less picky.
Speaker A
I feel like I don't know what.
Speaker B
Pressure on in your house.
Speaker C
Oh, you've got it. I need to bear tag and elk tag. I've got.
Speaker B
I need to get out and hunt. I've got for. On my own personal tags. But we've been hunting non stop.
Speaker C
Yeah, exactly. Yeah. Anyway, just it feels like yeah. This next two weeks we'll just call it maybe seven days. Was pushing up at two weeks. There could be a lot of. A lot of storytelling. Logan, you've even got a tag opening up this week if you really want to go after.
Speaker B
Yeah, yeah.
Speaker E
I don't have time to hunt for myself but yeah, I do have a tag.
Speaker C
Well, if you go hunt for yourself, you have to use your own gas card on that hunt versus go hunt with.
Speaker B
These are all things that come. That come into your mind.
Speaker E
It's true.
Speaker F
But if I wait.
Speaker E
If I wait until he's killed and then he comes and hunts with me now.
Speaker B
But if you have his gas card, you just fill up a fiver every time you use his gas card.
Speaker E
Well, there's always.
Speaker B
And then stash the. Yeah, the gas can here.
Speaker E
He calls them over, you're rounding up. If it's a 36 gallon tank, you round up to 40.
Speaker B
I save the four. Okay. Wow. Geez. And are you honest in all your dealings?
Speaker E
I am, yes.
Speaker B
All right, we're calling it a day, everybody. Good luck out there. We'd love to hear from you again. You can submit your photos and stories. Submit at. Excuse me. Photos@epicoutdoors.com I want to say submit, but it's not. Not a thing.
