Hola, welcome to Espanyol from Zero, a podcast for people who are just starting the amazing
spk_0
journey that is learning Spanish.
spk_0
My name is Mar, and as a teacher who works with Absolute Beginners, I was frustrated about
spk_0
not being able to find any podcasts that are focused on the basics, which is why I decided
spk_0
to create these series of really short and easy episodes for total beginners.
spk_0
Because even if you started learning Spanish just a few weeks ago, it's never too early
spk_0
to start working on your listening skills.
spk_0
So I really hope you find this useful, please retout if you have any questions, or if you
spk_0
want to have a lesson with me.
spk_0
Okay, that is all for the intro.
spk_0
Let's get to the espanyol.
spk_0
To this practice is focused on occupations.
spk_0
So if someone asks you, for example, what do you do?
spk_0
What do you do?
spk_0
And then you can add your job title.
spk_0
So in my case, if someone asks me what do you do?
spk_0
I reply.
spk_0
I am a teacher.
spk_0
Now, I don't know if you noticed that technically I didn't say I am a teacher.
spk_0
I just said I am teacher.
spk_0
And that's because that's really how we usually say it.
spk_0
If you're ever describing your occupation or someone else's job, it's for natural to
spk_0
not use the article.
spk_0
Instead, just say I am or he is, she is, and then just add the job title right after
spk_0
that.
spk_0
So I am teacher.
spk_0
That's how we say it.
spk_0
So that's the first thing we need to keep in mind when we are talking about work.
spk_0
The other thing that we have to think about is gender, as pretty much always, because
spk_0
gender is really important in Spanish.
spk_0
So whenever we are describing a person, we have to choose if we're going to use masculine
spk_0
or feminine words.
spk_0
At least most of the time, because we do also have some words that are gender neutral.
spk_0
So let's start with those first.
spk_0
There are many occupations that end withista.
spk_0
So think of words like artist, analyst, dentist, and so on.
spk_0
In Spanish, although them end withista and they are gender neutral.
spk_0
So we could say, el es artista, he is an artist, or ella es artista.
spk_0
She is an artist.
spk_0
Theista ending stays the same.
spk_0
And that's also the case for the ending, end de.
spk_0
You'll find similar English words like student, assistant, president, and so on.
spk_0
So again, in Spanish, all of these end with ente and they are also gender neutral.
spk_0
El es estudiante, he's a student.
spk_0
Ella es estudiante, she is a student.
spk_0
So ente andista are the most common gender neutral endings.
spk_0
Now let's look at the words that we do need to change depending on who we're talking about.
spk_0
So most of the time, we either have the masculine ending o or the feminine ending a.
spk_0
Like secretario, secretaria, meaning secretary.
spk_0
So in the case, we only change the last letter either o or a.
spk_0
And lastly, we have or and or a.
spk_0
In the case, you take a masculine word like profe sord and we add an a to make it feminine.
spk_0
But of his sort.
spk_0
Okay, now that the explanation is out of the way, let's practice a little bit.
spk_0
I'm going to say a couple of sentences and you have to figure out if I'm talking about a man or a woman or if I could be describing either one.
spk_0
Ready? Let's give it a try.
spk_0
Es arquitecta.
spk_0
Es programador.
spk_0
Es analista.
spk_0
Es presidente.
spk_0
Es veterinaria.
spk_0
Es el electricista.
spk_0
Es asistente.
spk_0
Es dentista.
spk_0
Es fotógrafo.
spk_0
Es mecánico.
spk_0
Es doctora.
spk_0
All right, in the show notes, you'll find a transcription.
spk_0
I hope you find it useful.
spk_0
I hope it wasn't too hard for you.
spk_0
But again, if you have any questions, just let me know.
spk_0
And that is all for today.
spk_0
Thank you for listening.
spk_0
Bye.
