spk_0 Welcome.
spk_0 You are listening to AfterSight.
spk_0 This recording is intended solely for individuals who are blind or have low vision.
spk_0 Thank you for joining us for the Dender Posts, D. Heislop.
spk_0 This is being recorded on October 7, 2025.
spk_0 Today we will be reading the following main articles.
spk_0 Illinois leaders sue to halt plan.
spk_0 Israel and Hamas launch indirect talks on eve of October 7th anniversary.
spk_0 Ethics board clears DIA leader over flight costs, DPS majority at stake in November 4th
spk_0 vote, and following up with miscellaneous articles.
spk_0 Illinois leaders sue to halt plan by Christine Fernando of the Associated Press.
spk_0 Illinois leaders went to court Monday to stop President Donald Trump from sending National
spk_0 Guard troops to Chicago, escalating a clash between Democratic-led states and the Republican
spk_0 administration during an aggressive immigration enforcement operation in the nation's third
spk_0 largest city.
spk_0 The legal challenge came hours after a judge blocked the guards' deployment in Portland,
spk_0 Oregon.
spk_0 The lawsuit in Chicago also raised the stakes after a violent weekend.
spk_0 Authorities said a woman was shot by a federal agent when border patrol vehicles were boxed
spk_0 in and struck by other vehicles.
spk_0 The city's police superintendent rejected suggestions that his officers were on the government's
spk_0 side in volatile situations like that one.
spk_0 The Trump administration has portrayed the city's as war ravaged and lawless amid its
spk_0 crackdown on illegal immigration.
spk_0 Officials in Illinois and Oregon say military intervention isn't needed and that federal
spk_0 involvement is in flaming the situation.
spk_0 The lawsuit alleges that these advances in President Trump's long declared, quote,
spk_0 war on Chicago and Illinois are unlawful and dangerous.
spk_0 Illinois governor JB Pritzker said a court hearing was scheduled for Thursday.
spk_0 Donald Trump is using our service members as political props and as pawns in his illegal
spk_0 effort to militarize our nation's cities.
spk_0 Pritzker a Democrat said.
spk_0 Pritzker said some 300 of the state's guard troops were to be federalized and deployed
spk_0 to Chicago along with 400 others from Texas.
spk_0 Pritzker said the potential deployment amounted to Trump's invasion and he called on Republican
spk_0 Texas governor Greg Abbott to block it.
spk_0 Abbott pushed back and said the crackdown was needed to protect federal workers who
spk_0 are in the city as part of the president's increased immigration enforcement.
spk_0 Abbott posted a picture on the social platform X on Monday night of Texas National Guard
spk_0 members boarding a plane but didn't specify where they were going.
spk_0 White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson confirmed in a weekend statement that Trump authorized
spk_0 using Illinois National Guard members.
spk_0 The site of armed border patrol agents making arrests near famous landmarks amplified concerns
spk_0 from Chicagoans already uneasy after an immigration crackdown that began last month.
spk_0 Agents have targeted immigrant heavy and largely Latino areas.
spk_0 Chicago mayor Brandon Johnson said Monday that he signed an executive order barring federal
spk_0 immigration agents and others from using city-owned property as staging areas for enforcement
spk_0 operations.
spk_0 Protesters have frequently rallied near an immigration facility outside the city and
spk_0 federal officials reported the arrests of 13 protesters Friday near the U.S. Immigration
spk_0 and Customs Enforcement Building in broad view.
spk_0 Mayor Katrina Thompson citing safety and other factors said she was limiting protests to
spk_0 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
spk_0 The ACLU of Illinois on Monday sued Trump, Department of Homeland Security, ICE, Border
spk_0 Patrol and National and Local Leaders at several agencies accusing them of unleashing a campaign
spk_0 of violence and intimidation against peaceful protesters and journalists during weeks of
spk_0 demonstrations outside that facility.
spk_0 The lawsuit alleges that federal agents used indiscriminate and violent force interfering
spk_0 with First Amendment rights.
spk_0 Elsewhere DHS acknowledged that agents shot a woman Saturday on Chicago's Southwest side.
spk_0 The department said it happened after Border Patrol agents patrolling the area were,
spk_0 quote, rammed by vehicles and boxed in by 10 cars.
spk_0 Chicago police superintendent Larry Snelling said it's reasonable for agents to use force
spk_0 if they believe they're being ambushed.
spk_0 He noted officers were redeployed from other parts of the city to assist the agents and
spk_0 that 27 were affected by tear gas.
spk_0 We cannot become a society where we just decide to take everything in our own hands and
spk_0 start to commit crimes against law enforcement Snelling said.
spk_0 Portland says no crime crisis there.
spk_0 In Portland, US District Judge Karen Immergut on Sunday granted a temporary restraining
spk_0 order sought by Oregon and California, barring the deployment of guard troops to Oregon
spk_0 from any state and the District of Columbia.
spk_0 Immergut, who was appointed by Trump during his first term, seemed incredulous that the
spk_0 president moved to send national guard troops to Oregon from neighboring California and
spk_0 then from Texas on Sunday, just hours after she had ruled against it the first time.
spk_0 White House spokeswoman Carolyn Levit criticized the decision and said the president was using
spk_0 his authority as commander in chief.
spk_0 Portland's ICE facility has been the site of nightly protests for months, peaking in
spk_0 June when Portland police declared a riot with smaller clashes occurring since then.
spk_0 In recent weeks, the nightly protests typically drew a couple dozen people until Trump ordered
spk_0 the National Guard.
spk_0 Over the weekend, larger crowds gathered outside the facility and federal agents fired tear
spk_0 gas.
spk_0 Portland police made multiple arrests.
spk_0 Israel and Hamas launch indirect talks on eve of October 7th anniversary by Sammy Magdy,
spk_0 Melanie Lidman and Wafas Sharafa of the Associated Press, accompanied by two photos, the first
spk_0 on Monday, Jojo Rabia, cleans a box used for lighting canzels as he visits the site where
spk_0 his two sons were killed on October 7th, 2023 in a cross-border attack by Hamas militants
spk_0 at the Nova Music Festival near the Cabooots Reem Southern Israel.
spk_0 The second, smoke billows over the Gaza Strip following an Israeli bombardment as seen
spk_0 from Southern Israel on Sunday.
spk_0 Israeli and Hamas officials launched indirect talks Monday at an Egyptian resort on a US drafted
spk_0 peace plan to end the ruinous war in Gaza on the eve of its second anniversary.
spk_0 The talks which went on for several hours unfolded amid many questions about the plan presented
spk_0 by US President Donald Trump last week, including the disarmament of the militant group,
spk_0 a key Israeli demand and the future governance of Gaza.
spk_0 Trump has indicated that an agreement on Gaza could pave the way for a Middle East peace
spk_0 prospects that could reshape the region.
spk_0 Despite Trump ordering Israel to stop its bombing, Israeli forces continued to pound Gaza
spk_0 with airstrikes killing at least 19 people in the last 24 hours the Territories Health
spk_0 Ministry said.
spk_0 An Egyptian official with knowledge of the talks said the parties wrapped up Monday's
spk_0 round of negotiations at the Red Sea Resort of Sharm El-Sheikh and the discussions were
spk_0 set to resume Tuesday afternoon.
spk_0 The official who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the talks
spk_0 said the parties have agreed on most of the first phase terms, which include the release
spk_0 of hostages and establishing a ceasefire.
spk_0 The Israelis are led by top negotiator Ron Dürmer while Khalil El-Hayah leads the Hamas
spk_0 delegation.
spk_0 Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said foreign policy adviser Ophir Falk would
spk_0 be present for Israel.
spk_0 Egypt's state-owned El-Kahera News television station reported that the talks began with
spk_0 a meeting between Arab mediators and the Hamas delegation.
spk_0 Mediators were to meet later with the Israeli delegation the station said.
spk_0 U.S. envoy Steve Whitkopf and Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner were also expected to join the talks
spk_0 local Egyptian media said.
spk_0 Hamas said negotiations will focus on the first stage of a ceasefire, including the partial
spk_0 withdrawal of Israeli forces, as well as the release of hostages held by the militants
spk_0 and Gaza in exchange for Palestinian prisoners in Israeli detention.
spk_0 This latest push for peace comes after Hamas accepted some elements of the U.S. plan
spk_0 that Israel also said it supported.
spk_0 Under the plan Hamas would release the remaining 48 hostages, about 20 of whom are believed
spk_0 to be alive within three days.
spk_0 It would give up power and disarm.
spk_0 The talks in Egypt are expected to move quickly.
spk_0 Netanyahu said they would be confined to a few days maximum, though some Hamas officials
spk_0 have warned that more time may be needed to locate bodies of hostages buried under rubble.
spk_0 Egyptian President Abdel Fata, LCC, hailed Trump's efforts,
spk_0 underscoring the importance of preserving the U.S. crafted peace system in the Middle East
spk_0 since the 1970s, which he said served as a strategic framework for regional stability.
spk_0 LCC spoke in a televised address commemorating the anniversary of the start of the 1973 war with
spk_0 Israel that led to Egypt reclaiming the Sinai Peninsula where Sharma El-Sheik is located.
spk_0 The U.S. said Israel's heavy bombardment of Gaza would need to stop for the hostages to be released.
spk_0 Israel says it's largely heating Trump's call.
spk_0 The Israeli military said it mostly is mostly carrying out defensive strikes to protect troops,
spk_0 though dozens of Palestinians have been killed since the military statement Saturday night.
spk_0 Gaza's Health Ministry said Monday that the bodies of 19 people, including two
spk_0 eight seekers killed by Israeli strikes and gunfire, had been brought to hospitals over the past
spk_0 24 hours. Another 96 were wounded. The deaths brought the Palestinians' toll to 66.
spk_0 7,160 since the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023 triggered the war with nearly 170,000 wounded.
spk_0 The ministry said. The ministry does not differentiate between civilians and combatants,
spk_0 but says more than half of the deaths were women and children. The ministry is part of the
spk_0 Hamas-run government and the UN and many independent experts consider its figures to be the
spk_0 most reliable estimate of wartime casualties. Hamas led militants abducted 251 people
spk_0 and killed around 1200 mostly civilians in the October 7 attack. Most of the largely Israeli
spk_0 hostages have been released in ceasefires or other deals. Meanwhile, the families of Israeli
spk_0 hostages petitioned the Nobel Prize Committee to award the Nobel Peace Prize to Trump for what
spk_0 they called his unprecedented contributions to global peace. At this very moment,
spk_0 President Trump's comprehensive plan to release all remaining hostages and finally end this
spk_0 terrible war is on the table the families wrote. For the first time in months, we are hopeful that
spk_0 our nightmare will finally be over. In a commemoration ceremony for Israelis killed at the near-az
spk_0 cabots on October 7, Daniel Liftschitz said the primary focus of talks should be the swift release
spk_0 of all remaining hostages. Israel will pay painful concessions by releasing mass murderers and terrorists
spk_0 that killed many among our friends and families here in Israel, but we cherish life and in
spk_0 Trump we trust it to make it happen. Said Liftschitz, grandson of Slein-Hastage, Oded, and released
spk_0 hostage Yuchhev at Liftschitz. In Gaza, families of Palestinian babies born on the day the war began,
spk_0 hoped to celebrate their second birthday with the sound of laughter and cheers instead of the
spk_0 cacophony of bombs and bullets. The babies' mothers have been repeatedly displaced and living
spk_0 constant fear for their safety. They also lack access to health care. Amal El-Tawil and her husband
spk_0 Mostafa had their son Ali after three years of trying for a child. They now live in a tent without
spk_0 proper sanitation, food, vaccination or toys. I was envisioning a different life for him. He couldn't
spk_0 experience what a safe family life feels like Al-Tawil said. The Vatican marked the second anniversary
spk_0 of the October 7th attacks by condemning the inhuman massacre of innocent people in Israel
spk_0 and calling for the return of hostages. But it also said Israel's raising of Gaza is itself a
spk_0 disproportionate massacre and called on countries to stop supplying Israel weapons to wage the war.
spk_0 Those who are attacked have a right to defend themselves, but even legitimate defense
spk_0 must respect the principle of proportionality, Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro
spk_0 Parallel and said on the eve of the anniversary, the perverse chain of hatred can only generate
spk_0 a spiral that leads nowhere good. Ethics Board clears DIA leader over flight costs by
spk_0 Elliott Wensler of the Denver Post. The Denver Board of Ethics has cleared Denver International
spk_0 Airport CEO Phil Washington of using his position for private gain when he flume self-entate
spk_0 other executives to Madrid on a spring trip that cost about $18,000 per person.
spk_0 But the Board member said in a written decision that even if Washington technically followed
spk_0 city policy, they were appalled by the amount of money he approved spending for an aviation
spk_0 conference and by his seemingly cavalier attitude in responding to this complaint.
spk_0 The decision issued Friday came five months after CBS News Colorado revealed the cost of the
spk_0 tickets and other travel expenses after filing a request under the Colorado Open Records Act.
spk_0 Soon after the story came out in May, someone anonymously filed an ethics complaint about the report.
spk_0 While the Board of Ethics believes that officers, officials, and employees of the city and
spk_0 county of Denver should be better stewards of public funds, the Board must apply the facts to the
spk_0 law as it stands according to the ruling document. In an interview with the Board's executive
spk_0 director, Washington said he wouldn't have allowed the purchase of the airline tickets
spk_0 if he knew how much they would cost according to the decision. But the Board found that when
spk_0 Washington approved the expenses, the estimates he saw were mostly in line with the actual costs.
spk_0 Mr. Washington's statement that he was unaware of the actual costs of the airfare is concerning
spk_0 the members wrote in the statement. The airport's travel policy allows employees to fly business class
spk_0 on flights longer than eight hours and on this trip all nine flew business our first class.
spk_0 The group's round trip flights ranged in price from about $9,300 each for three officials to nearly
spk_0 $19,200 for the airport's chief operating officer, Dave Laporte. Washington's flights cost about
spk_0 $12,000. The airport has since changed its travel policy to no longer allow employees to use
spk_0 business class to travel back to Denver on a Friday or over a weekend since they won't need to work
spk_0 right away upon the return. While there were no findings of any wrongdoing,
spk_0 nor is DEN a taxpayer-funded agency, Denver International Airport, has made updates to its travel
spk_0 policy to clarify some areas and to create clearer guidance for leaders and employees on what's
spk_0 expected and allowable and to ensure we are operating in the most ethical, efficient way,
spk_0 said Courtney Law, a spokeswoman for the airport. In the ethics decision, the Board also took
spk_0 issue with Washington saying it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to attend the passenger terminal
spk_0 expo and conference since it happens annually. Washington said the higher class seats were necessary
spk_0 so that the executives could, quote, hit the ground running when they arrived, even though almost
spk_0 none of them had speaking engagements until one to two days after they arrived in Madrid.
spk_0 The Board found that Denver Mayor Mike Johnston's Chief of Staff Jen Ritter also approved the estimated
spk_0 expenses but said she was compelled to do so because the costs came from the airport's own budget
spk_0 rather than the city's general fund. The airport operates off-revenue it generates including from
spk_0 airlines and passengers. Washington described the three-day conference which began April 8th as
spk_0 an opportunity to learn from the best in aviation and a chance to bring ideas back to Denver.
spk_0 The Board of Ethics is an independent agency established by the city charter that investigates
spk_0 ethics, complaints and issues opinions on ethical responsibilities.
spk_0 DPS majority at stake in November 4th, vote by Jessica Seaman of the Denver Post.
spk_0 The leadership and direction of Denver Public Schools is at stake in next month's election
spk_0 as four Board of Education seats are up for grabs enough to shift the seven member body's majority.
spk_0 The high-stakes election has already generated more than $255,000 in campaign spending from
spk_0 political groups, a number that candidates and organizers expect to increase in the month that
spk_0 remains before ballots are due on November 4th. The Deep Pocketed Denver Families Action
spk_0 Political Group, which has charter school ties, is hoping to complete the flip of the DPS
spk_0 School Board that the organization began in 2023 when all three of its candidates won and
spk_0 unceded two Union-backed incumbents. The organization is the political arm of Denver families
spk_0 for public schools. Candidates backed by the Teachers Union have controlled the Board since 2019,
spk_0 but their grip began to erode in 2023. Four of the current Board members were backed by the Denver
spk_0 Classroom Teachers Association when they won their seats, but now the Union is only endorsing one
spk_0 of the three incumbents in the race. Board President Kerry Olson is term-limited.
spk_0 Denver Families CEO Clarence Burton Jr. insists, as he did two years ago, that the city has moved on
spk_0 from the decades-old reform debate about school choice and charter schools. Instead, he and Denver
spk_0 Families actions allies and candidates say the DPS Board is dysfunctional and unable to guide
spk_0 the district and improve student academic outcomes. This is a moment where the DPS School Board,
spk_0 specifically, is historically unfavorable, Burton said, will we move toward a board that is
spk_0 transparent, that is prioritizing student outcomes and serving the teacher population,
spk_0 or will we continue to have a situation where we're sort of waddling in the midst of dysfunction
spk_0 and confusion about the direction we go in. Others, including Union leaders,
spk_0 disagree that the reform fight isn't at play in this election. The amount of money being funneled
spk_0 into the school board race's indication enough that DPS remains a battleground for policies
spk_0 that in past administrations have included the expansion of charter and innovation schools,
spk_0 as well as the use of school closures to improve academic outcomes, they said.
spk_0 It is not true that people don't care about this issue,
spk_0 said Van Scholl's Senior Policy Director at the Keystone Policy Center, a nonprofit that conducts
spk_0 education research. DCTA wouldn't be fighting as hard as they are, or Denver Families,
spk_0 they wouldn't be as engaged spending on the election. 11 people are vying for the four board seats,
spk_0 and both Denver families in DCTA are the main spenders in this year's election,
spk_0 just as they were in 2023, when more than $2 million was spent between outside groups and candidates.
spk_0 An independent expenditure committee called Better Leaders, stronger schools, has spent $244,900
spk_0 on digital and television advertisements for DPS principal Alex Magania, who is running for
spk_0 the at-large seat currently held by Scott Esermon, who in turn is running to represent district
spk_0 three, according to the latest campaign finance reports.
spk_0 Independent expenditure committees cannot work with candidates directly. Better leaders
spk_0 stronger schools receives most of its money from Denver Families action, but others have also
spk_0 donated, including Colorado billionaire Philip Anchutes, who gave at least $40,000.
spk_0 Denver Families has endorsed Magania, Mariano Del Hiero, Karen Blank, and Tamiya Jackson.
spk_0 DCTA has given at least $10,668 to three of the four candidates the union is endorsing,
spk_0 including incumbent Sochi Gaton. The Teachers' Union's independent committee,
spk_0 students deserve Better, has not yet spent money on the election. The union has also endorsed
spk_0 Amy Klein, Moeke, DJ Torres, and Monica Hunter. Two incumbents Esermon and Michelle Quattlebaum
spk_0 are also seeking another four years on the board, but we're not endorsed by the union despite
spk_0 receiving DCTA's support in 2021. The union isn't backing Esermon and Quattlebaum because of certain
spk_0 positions they've taken, but the outcome of the 2023 election also changed who DCTA endorsed
spk_0 this year, Union President Rob Gould said. The union has advocated for smaller class sizes in
spk_0 schools for years, but Gaton has championed conversations around class sizes more than her colleagues,
spk_0 he said. We've not seen enough focus around that, Gould said. In terms of individual fundraising,
spk_0 blank had raised more than $50,000, Moeke more than $47,000, and Magganya more than $45,000
spk_0 campaign finance reports as of September 29th showed. Incompanieds, Gaton, Quattlebaum and Esermon
spk_0 have raised less money. Esermon has received more than $15,000 in donations while Gaton and
spk_0 Quattlebaum have raised more than $6,000 and $7,000 respectively. Financial challenges ahead.
spk_0 Despite the money being spent on the election, this year's DPS candidates aren't talking about
spk_0 teacher contracts, school choice, charter and innovation schools, or other topics that date
spk_0 back to the district's reformiers, Sholes said. Those fights have always been incredibly intense,
spk_0 but I don't see that playing out in how the candidates are talking about their objectives,
spk_0 he said. It's very hard to tell the difference between the candidates on their positions.
spk_0 This year candidates and political groups are talking about how the Trump administration has
spk_0 repeatedly threatened to pull federal funding from K-12 school systems for diversity, equity,
spk_0 and inclusion policies that the government calls discriminatory. The federal government has come
spk_0 after DPS for its policies related to transgender students accusing the district of discriminating
spk_0 against girls for having gender-neutral bathrooms at a handful of schools. DPS has also gone head
spk_0 to head with the Trump administration in court, challenging federal immigration policies
spk_0 in an effort to prevent officers from conducting raids inside schools.
spk_0 We should all be proud of the job that our district has done standing up to the Trump
spk_0 administration. Burton said, we're not just a district that is resisting those policies,
spk_0 but actually at the forefront of standing against them nationally.
spk_0 DPS is facing financial challenges other than the Trump administration's threats to pull funding.
spk_0 K-12 enrollment is falling statewide, leading to less per pupil funding for schools.
spk_0 The outlook for the state budget also isn't looking promising with a nearly $1 billion
spk_0 deficit projected. Additional school closures loom. How candidates approach potential school
spk_0 closures is important given the financial headwind DPS is likely to face in the coming months.
spk_0 Schools get less money when there are fewer students in their classrooms,
spk_0 leading to larger class sizes and fewer resources such as mental health support and extra
spk_0 curriculars. What's going to happen to our schools given the situation we are in,
spk_0 ghouls asked, are we going to get people in here who are actually going to think about what we
spk_0 need to do for funding issues? The school board voted last year to close seven schools and
spk_0 restructure another three because of low enrollment, but board members were low to do so,
spk_0 rejecting super-intended Alex Marrero's initial proposal in 2022 before finally voting to shut
spk_0 down three in 2023. It's not an easy conversation to have and there's multiple things you have to
spk_0 consider Quadalbaum said. The school board voted this summer to approve a four-year hiatus
spk_0 on school closures. Directors who supported the measure said it wasn't intended to give schools
spk_0 and families a chance to breathe before another round.
spk_0 Magganya criticized how the board has handled closures, saying the district needs to long-term
spk_0 plan on how many buildings need to close. We've known this problem for 10 years and still do not
spk_0 have a solution for it, he said, that's the responsibility of the board.
spk_0 Esserman defended how he and his colleagues have handled school closures. The board can change the
spk_0 closure policy if Marrero tells directors that another round of school closures needs to happen
spk_0 sooner than four years he said. The policy is not written in stone, Esserman said.
spk_0 Comes with the territory. In the past four years the DPS school board has gained a reputation
spk_0 for infighting that has largely focused on how to govern. More, most recently, board members
spk_0 scolded director John Youngquist, who was elected in 2023 for behavior unbecoming of a board member
spk_0 toward DPS staff and hired an outside attorney to investigate racial discrimination allegations.
spk_0 Quadalbaum and Esserman pushed back on the notion of infighting, saying disputes are common when
spk_0 you have seven individuals with different personalities. I'm not elected to win a popularity
spk_0 contest with my colleagues, but I am there to treat them with dignity and respect, Quadalbaum said.
spk_0 Critics have also questioned the school board's decision earlier this year to extend Marrero's
spk_0 contract for another two years and make it harder to fire the superintendent by requiring a
spk_0 super majority of at least five members. Marrero's contract was set to expire in 2026 before the
spk_0 extension. Board members said at the time that they wanted to renew the contract to keep
spk_0 DPS leadership consistent amid federal funding threats. Magganya was among a group of Latino
spk_0 community leaders and politicians who asked the board to pause the contract renewal until directors
spk_0 could review student academic performance. The board said needs to do a better job at holding Marrero
spk_0 accountable. If the superintendent is not meeting goals set by the school board,
spk_0 then directors need to decide whether it's time to move on. Magganya said, he is doing the job
spk_0 that he's been assigned to do. Magganya said of Marrero, he's interpreting it the way he is
spk_0 interpreting it. The problem is not the superintendent, the problem is the board. The board did not do
spk_0 its job. Marrero, in an interview Monday, acknowledged that one of the primary jobs of the school board
spk_0 is the hiring and firing of the superintendent. The chance that a new board could terminate his
spk_0 contract comes with a territory, he said. Blood test made detect who will get rheumatoid arthritis.
spk_0 Early screening could be feasible in the future researchers says by Meg Wingarder of the Denver
spk_0 Post. People who develop rheumatoid arthritis experience changes to their immune systems long before
spk_0 their joints become swollen and painful, suggesting that early treatment might stop or limit damage
spk_0 a new University of Colorado study found. Unlike typical osteoarthritis where cartilage and joints
spk_0 breaks down, rheumatoid arthritis results from the immune system attacking healthy tissues.
spk_0 The main treatment suppressed parts of the immune system, leaving patients more vulnerable to
spk_0 infections. Dr. Kevin Dean, director of the Autoimmune Disease Prevention Center on C.U.'s
spk_0 Anxious Medical Campus, study study following patients at risk for rheumatoid arthritis for
spk_0 seven years found a consistent pattern. The participants all had one type of antibody against
spk_0 their own tissues, which gave them about a 30% risk of going on to develop rheumatoid arthritis.
spk_0 Antibodies are supposed to flag infections so the immune system can destroy the invader.
spk_0 People who developed the disease had other changes that would show up on a blood test,
spk_0 meaning that early screening for rheumatoid arthritis could be feasible in the future, he said.
spk_0 About 1% to 2% of people have the first antibody indicating they could be at high risk and might
spk_0 benefit from further monitoring, Dean said. A second study currently enrolling on the
spk_0 Anxious Campus will follow people with that particular antibody for five years to test
spk_0 preventive measures. People who might be at higher risk because of a relative has rheumatoid arthritis
spk_0 can get tested for the antibody to see if they're eligible. Right now the only prevention options for
spk_0 people at risk of rheumatoid arthritis are lifestyle changes such as quitting smoking, exercising
spk_0 and eating a healthy diet, Dean said. With more understanding of the underlying changes in the
spk_0 immune system, researchers can start testing whether other treatments could prevent or delay rheumatoid
spk_0 arthritis or lead to less severe symptoms when it eventually develops, he said.
spk_0 As is, about 70% of people with rheumatoid arthritis need more than one drug to get it under
spk_0 control, Dean said. Hopefully if they can start treating the disease because it causes joint
spk_0 damage, patients can take fewer drugs and avoid some side effects, he said. The idea has precedent.
spk_0 Children at risk for type 1 diabetes can now take a medication to delay damage to their
spk_0 pancreas, though it doesn't entirely stop the disease process. If they can study the right antibodies,
spk_0 researchers could also discover and possibly delay the changes leading to other autoimmune
spk_0 diseases such as lupus and celiac disease, Dean said. While stopping a disease altogether would
spk_0 be ideal, that would also be a victory, he said. Mayor opens city hall to homeless residents,
spk_0 propped in a backlash by Jocelyn Raleigh of the reporter Harold. Mayor Jackie Marsh opened
spk_0 loved ones city hall on Sunday night to let up to 15 unhoused residents sleep inside as it
spk_0 rained, a move that sparked sharp criticism from fellow council members and may have violated
spk_0 city procedures. Ward 3 representative Steve Olson, who said he received a tip about the
spk_0 group's presence in the building, recorded a video from inside around 10 p.m. Sunday,
spk_0 showing the interior lobby and council chambers with several people lying on the floor or sitting
spk_0 in chairs, some covered with blankets or coats. In the video Olson can be heard confronting the
spk_0 mayor about her decision. The video was later posted to city council candidate Zik Cortez's Facebook
spk_0 page. Marsh said she made the decision after spending the previous night outside with people in
spk_0 front of city hall where temperatures dropped into the low forties. With rain in the forecast for
spk_0 Sunday night, she said she feared the conditions would become dangerous for those without adequate
spk_0 shelter. I do believe there's a high chance that somebody would have gotten hypothermia said,
spk_0 Marsh, I could not have driven away in the rain and left them out there in t-shirts and shorts
spk_0 without adequate blankets or sleeping bags. I just couldn't have lived with myself as a human being
spk_0 had I done that. On Monday, Olson called the mayor's decision to open city hall political and not
spk_0 okay. All of us are shocked and appalled Olson said, noting that he has spoken with other city
spk_0 council members about the move. She can invite people into her house, but she can't just invite
spk_0 people into city buildings when it's after hours and it's technically trespassing. One of those
spk_0 other council members was Andrea Samson who described herself Monday as still reeling over the move.
spk_0 I was floored when I saw Steve's video she said, to me it's a misuse of city resources.
spk_0 It's a misuse of privilege. We didn't take that action as a city, let alone as a council.
spk_0 The decision may also have violated city policies and might be considered trespassing according to
spk_0 city attorney Vince Jungles who said Monday morning that he was still gathering facts about the
spk_0 incident. It is unclear to me what authorization if any was provided for this sort of activity he
spk_0 told the reporter Harold noting that day-to-day control of city buildings lies with the city manager
spk_0 and not the mayor or city council. Lovelin police confirmed Monday that they are waiting for
spk_0 direction from city officials on whether the incident will be investigated as a potential criminal
spk_0 matter. Marsh said she extended jungles and city manager Jim Thompson around 3.20 pm Sunday asking
spk_0 for permission to open the municipal building to shelter people during the coming rain. She noted
spk_0 that she had done it on other occasions in the past citing the 2024 9.11 commemoration,
spk_0 a 30-minute ceremony that was moved inside from foot lagoon due to rain.
spk_0 Over several back and forth texts with Thompson, Marsh said she never received a clear no,
spk_0 though the city manager did call the municipal building an inappropriate setting for overnight
spk_0 shelter according to Marsh. He also offered to open the Lovelin Resource Center, the city's
spk_0 daytime shelter at 137 South Lincoln Avenue as an alternative. They were not in the dark,
spk_0 Marsh said. I told them I was going to do this and neither one said I couldn't.
spk_0 Marsh said about 50 people were camped on the plaza in front of the municipal building Sunday night
spk_0 and that most remained outside intense. Inside she said volunteers helped monitor the group and
spk_0 ensure everyone remained on the main level. The group left by about 4 a.m. she said and the
spk_0 building was cleaned before city employees arrived. You could not tell that anyone had been in their
spk_0 Marsh said. Julie Disroch's one of the unhoused residents who stayed inside confirmed the mayor's
spk_0 account and said the atmosphere was peaceful and quiet until early morning. We made sure everybody
spk_0 stayed calm and cool. Disroch's said adding that the mayor wasn't angel helping the community by
spk_0 offering shelter from the rain. Despite the pushback, Marsh said she will take full responsibility for
spk_0 the decision. If they cite me for trespass, I'll hire an attorney and fight it, she said.
spk_0 These are human beings. For humanitarian reasons, I did the right thing.
spk_0 CU to post undercover officers and stands. New policy aims to curb abusive behavior after $50,000
spk_0 BYU game fine by Brian Howell of the Daily Camera. The University of Colorado Athletics Department
spk_0 is implementing new procedures to improve fan behavior at Folsom Field including using undercover
spk_0 police officers. CU announced the changes on Monday and said the new policy will be implemented
spk_0 on Saturday when the Buffalo's host number 22 ranked Iowa State at Folsom Field. The changes
spk_0 come in the wake of the Buffs last home game against BYU on September 27. That night, fans repeatedly
spk_0 chanted quote F blank BYU and F blank the Mormons during the game which BYU won 24 to 21.
spk_0 BYU is operated by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Three days after that game,
spk_0 the Big 12 conference issued a public reprimand and announced a $50,000 fine for CU athletics because
spk_0 of the fan behavior. Going forward, CU has announced several changes including having undercover
spk_0 police in various sections throughout the stadium to be ready for immediate removal of fans by
spk_0 leading the policy. These new procedures also illustrate how seriously we are taking the issue
spk_0 of fan behavior and how committed we are to ensuring that every visitor to our campus feels
spk_0 safe and respected. CU spokesperson Steve Hurlbert said in a statement provided to the daily
spk_0 camera. CU said it will have an increase in security personnel inside and outside the stadium,
spk_0 including in the student section and an increase in security response. CU is also installing new
spk_0 technology to proactively monitor behavior throughout the stadium. In addition, fans have been asked to
spk_0 text the Folsom Field Text for Assistance line at 720-812-1769 to report problems.
spk_0 Per a press release, CU said that violations of the CU fan code of conduct will result in
spk_0 immediate removal and possible loss of ticket privileges for the remainder of the season.
spk_0 CU cited disruptive behavior including foul, abusive, obscene or discriminatory language or
spk_0 gestures as well as throwing items. CU athletic director Rick George last week vowed that a new
spk_0 policy was being discussed, saying in a statement that behavior by those fans who chanted was appalling
spk_0 is unacceptable and is not indicative of the values we strive for at CU. We must do better and we will.
spk_0 Trump says he's open to striking health care deal with Democrats by Kevin Frecken and Sangmin Kim of the
spk_0 Associated Press. President Donald Trump said Monday that he's open to striking a deal with
spk_0 Democrats on the health care subsidies they've made central to the shutdown fight, cracking the
spk_0 door slightly to negotiations that Republicans have said should only happen after the government
spk_0 reopens. But Trump also said billions and billions are being wasted, nodding to arguments from
spk_0 conservatives who do not want the health subsidies extended to lessen the cost of plans offered
spk_0 under the Affordable Care Act, commonly referred to as Obamacare. We have a negotiation going on
spk_0 right now with the Democrats that could lead to very good things Trump said and I'm talking about
spk_0 good things with regard to health care. Trump's comments were one of the few hopeful signs Monday
spk_0 as the government shutdown extended to its sixth day. Negotiations between the two parties have been
spk_0 virtually nonexistent since the start of the shutdown despite the impact on federal services.
spk_0 Democrats have been urging that Trump get involved with many saying no deal will be possible
spk_0 without the president's approval. The two Democratic leaders in Congress, Senator Chuck Schumer,
spk_0 and Representative Hakim Jeffries both denied that there are any negotiations with Trump.
spk_0 Jeffries said the White House has gone radio silence since a meeting in the Oval Office last week.
spk_0 Trump's claim isn't true, but if he's finally ready to work with Democrats,
spk_0 we'll be at the table Schumer said. Senate Majority Leader John Thune told reporters
spk_0 there may be a path forward on ACA subsidies, but stressed. I think a lot of it would come down to
spk_0 where the White House lands on that. The comments came as the Senate prepared to take another seemingly
spk_0 doomed pair of votes Monday on funding the federal government. Both parties are seeking to ramp
spk_0 up the pressure on the other to end the impasse. Thune said a critical food aid program for women,
spk_0 infants and children was starting to run low on funds, blaming Democrats and saying
spk_0 now it's the American people who are suffering the consequences. Schumer said his side was ready
spk_0 to work with Republicans to reopen the government and end the health care crises that faces tens of
spk_0 millions of Americans. But it takes two sides to have a negotiation Schumer said. Earlier in the day,
spk_0 the two sides dug in. House Speaker Mike Johnson said there's nothing for us to negotiate,
spk_0 while Jeffries declared the time is now to work out a deal on health care.
spk_0 Johnson, Republican Louisiana, told reporters that they could stop asking why he wasn't negotiating
spk_0 an end to the impasse and that it was up to a handful of Democrats to stop the madness
spk_0 and pass a stopgap spending bill that had earlier passed the House. We did the job to keep the
spk_0 government open and now it's on the Senate Democrats. Johnson said the House is not expected to be in
spk_0 session this week focusing attention on the Senate to take the lead on any deal in the Republican
spk_0 led Congress. Yet even with House lawmakers away, the Republican and Democratic leaders have been
spk_0 holding almost daily briefings as they frame their arguments and seek to shift blame for the shutdown.
spk_0 Democrats are insisting on renewing subsidies to cover health insurance costs for millions of
spk_0 households, but Republicans have insisted that can be dealt with later. They say the subsidies are
spk_0 a separate debate than the one on keeping the government funded for a few weeks while the two
spk_0 sides work out their differences on a full year spending package. Jeffrey said in an NBC that
spk_0 today show interview Monday that notices have already started to go out to Americans and rolled
spk_0 in health insurance exchanges established through the Affordable Care Act with those notices
spk_0 showing dramatic increases in premiums next year. That's what people are facing right now,
spk_0 which is why we need to address it, Jeffrey said. The stalemate comes at a moment of troubling
spk_0 economic uncertainty while the U.S. economy has continued to grow this year, hiring has slowed
spk_0 and inflation remains elevated as the Republican president's import taxes have created a series of
spk_0 disruptions for businesses and hurt confidence in his leadership. At the same time, there is a
spk_0 recognition that the nearly $2 trillion annual budget deficit is financially unsustainable.
spk_0 The Trump administration sees the shutdown as an opening to wield greater power over the budget
spk_0 with multiple officials saying they will save money as workers are furloughed by imposing
spk_0 permanent job cuts on thousands of government workers, a tactic that has never been used before.
spk_0 Trump had seemingly suggested Sunday night that layoffs were already taking place,
spk_0 but White House Press Secretary Carolyn Levitt said Trump was talking about furloughs.
spk_0 Under a furlough, workers cannot report to work, but they will return to their job and get paid
spk_0 actively after the shutdown ends. She said layoffs were still planned if the shutdown continues.
spk_0 The talk of layoffs has escalated an already tense situation in which Washington lawmakers
spk_0 have struggled to find common ground and build mutual trust. Leaders in both parties are betting
spk_0 that public sentiment has swung their way, putting pressure on the other side to cave.
spk_0 In sports, the next step, just like during his career as player Johnson ready to adapt by
spk_0 Cory Massissick of the Denver Post, Eric Johnson would like to have a game to prepare for this week,
spk_0 but he's ready to adapt. Johnson, who announced his retirement Wednesday after 17 seasons in the NHL,
spk_0 revealed his near future plans Monday at a news conference to reflect on a career that included
spk_0 more than 1,000 NHL games and a Stanley Cup Championship in 2022. One of the most popular
spk_0 players in Colorado Avalanche history, EJ, will spend time during the 2025-26 season on local
spk_0 television screens while also exploring other roles in hockey. He's going to be an analyst for
spk_0 altitude sports, which includes commentary on University of Denver and Air Force games,
spk_0 plus some work in the studio for Avalanche Contests. Noting the great relationship he has with
spk_0 Philadelphia Flyers General Manager, Daniel Breyer, Johnson is also going to do some scouting for
spk_0 that franchise. He has another venture in the works as well, but couldn't reveal those details
spk_0 Monday. I'm going to kind of try and do a few different things this year and see what I like
spk_0 Johnson said at Family Sports Center. That's kind of where I'm at. Not going to try and overwhelm
spk_0 myself. I'm going to try and do things that I haven't been able to do this time of year in the past
spk_0 and do that as well. Johnson joked that he is going to be a regular at weddings and birthday parties,
spk_0 family events that he often missed while playing. He's still going to be involved in horse racing as
spk_0 well, but it will remain more of a hobby. When he wasn't holding back tears or thanking everyone who
spk_0 helped him along his journey, Johnson offered some life lessons that helped him carve out an
spk_0 interesting NHL career. As he noted, Johnson went from an offense first defenseman in the early
spk_0 part of his career to a defense first guy later on. Always remember, even though something may not
spk_0 be the best for you as an individual, it's best for the team that matters most. Johnson said
spk_0 in a nod to how he accepted a lesser role as the avalanche roster evolved into a Stanley Cup
spk_0 contender. Johnson certainly evolved over the course of his career. He was the number one pick in his
spk_0 draft class, which produced a level of expectations and pressures that few professional athletes face.
spk_0 As General Manager Chris McFarland pushed back on Johnson's notion that he went from being a
spk_0 really good player on bad teams to an okay player on good teams, but the players point about
spk_0 adaptation and putting aside ego and personal glory remains. Along the way, the condor became a
spk_0 beloved teammate of veteran mentor and someone who positively impacted countless people throughout
spk_0 his career. I don't think I was probably the best teammate early on. I think over time I got
spk_0 better. Johnson said, you snap your fingers and your career is over and it's so short. In the big
spk_0 picture of your life, I just figured that why not come to the rink every day like it's the best day
spk_0 ever. And I hope that run off on people over time. Johnson's family planned to stay in Colorado for
spk_0 his second act. He may have been selected by the St. Louis Blues, but Johnson feels as much like an
spk_0 adopted son of Denver as anyone who put on an avalanche jersey at the NHL draft. The one thing
spk_0 about EJ, he's going to be successful no matter what he decides to do in the future. Avalanche
spk_0 Captain Gay Blantascog said, secret behind Bonito's surge, Denver's defensive line. By Luca
spk_0 EG, Jalen Hurtz during the second half of Sunday's game at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.
spk_0 Broncos outside linebacker Nick Bonito had not seen EG, Jalen Hurtz since their days at Oklahoma.
spk_0 And Bonito was plenty excited to see my dog J. Hurtz again in Philadelphia. He said, this last week.
spk_0 No quarterback in this league though has been excited to see Bonito through five weeks regardless
spk_0 of old ties, because seeing too much of Bonito has meant a swift faceplant in the turf. In Sunday's
spk_0 miraculous 21-17 Broncos win, Hurtz got up close and personal with Bonito as Denver's outside
spk_0 linebacker racked up another two and a half sacks on what's slowly shaping up as a past rushing
spk_0 season for the ages. Once that came on a third and 15 as EG was right tackle Jordan Melata,
spk_0 that tangled up. And the outside linebacker's Moxie has grown outsized enough that he started
spk_0 mocking the EG, fly EG, fly celebration after he wrestled Hurtz down for a loss. Denver was down
spk_0 17-3 at that point, to the defending Super Bowl champions. Bonito flapped his arms as if Denver was
spk_0 up. He's incredible defensive lineman, Zach Allen said, if you leave him one on one, he's going to
spk_0 win. That statement of course contained a key caveat. If you leave him one on one, Bonito has seven
spk_0 sacks through five games and teammates from Allen to Pat Cirtan the second are beginning to launch
spk_0 a very vocal campaign for him as the NFL defensive player of the year. A massive part of that is a
spk_0 credit to Bonito's journey from a raw but tentative talent to a driven force of nature. But another
spk_0 part of it is the fact that few NFL offensive lines can consistently throw double teams at him.
spk_0 That third quarter sack of Hurtz was the result of a domino effect. Bonito tried fighting inside
spk_0 Aniko's left tackle Melata who tied him up momentarily. Allen meanwhile pushed Ligo's left guard
spk_0 Brett Toth directly into Philadelphia center cam jurgens. John Franklin Myers came looping around
spk_0 to the hole, opened by Toth's absence forcing Melata to pick up Franklin Myers, which gave Bonito a
spk_0 red carpet directly to O-Buddy Hurtz. Quietly or not so quietly for opposing quarterbacks, Denver's
spk_0 defensive line has void Bonito's ability to focus on winning one on one matchups. Allen came into
spk_0 Sunday's game leading all NFL interior defensive lineman in quarterback hits. Nine. The next closest
spk_0 through four games, Titans, DL, Jeffrey Simmons had five. Franklin Myers and DJ Jones,
spk_0 meanwhile, have consistently tied up opposing centers and guards in the past rush.
spk_0 And outside linebacker Jonathan Cooper has been every bit as impressive as Bonito in terms of raw
spk_0 athleticism. Through week four, Cooper had the fastest average get off point six, nine seconds
spk_0 of any defender with at least 10 quarterback pressures according to NFL's next gen stats.
spk_0 Bonito for one took the time Sunday to heap shine on his defensive line pointing to Cooper and
spk_0 Franklin Myers as selfless for fitting their rush lanes. I feel like I'm playing really well,
spk_0 but I'd be damned if I didn't give credit to the whole D-line Bonito said, I mean, just the way
spk_0 we were rushing today, keeping them in the pocket, making them very uncomfortable and hesitant.
spk_0 Obviously I had the sacks, but I felt like everybody was rushing really well today. Bonito added
spk_0 that he felt Denver's defensive line room has the best connection of any group in the league.
spk_0 It's hard to argue through another roaring start leading the NFL in sacks and just pairing with
spk_0 Allen after two monster extensions this summer is set to bear fruit long beyond whatever heights
spk_0 arrive in 2025. The fact that, you know, I get to play with him together for the next four years
spk_0 is awesome, Allen said. Thank you for joining us for the Denver Post Read by D Heistlup.
