spk_0 Oh, wherever you get your podcast.
spk_0 A beloved retiree is living the dream.
spk_0 He just moved down here where he could fish every day
spk_0 and just a real laid back last stop.
spk_0 Until a frantic 911 call sparks local police to action.
spk_0 This is a response.
spk_0 It's too over.
spk_0 What?
spk_0 Is he breathing?
spk_0 Investigators zero in on a lone stranger.
spk_0 They get with a forensic artist and developing sketch.
spk_0 It was a eerie come on.
spk_0 And a closer look at motive leads to unexpected revelations.
spk_0 She knew what a relationship was rocky
spk_0 that it was not a good relationship.
spk_0 It was starting to come to a head.
spk_0 She was not going to be able to survive.
spk_0 She was getting desperate.
spk_0 And you know, he had an insurance policy.
spk_0 Let me get your apartment.
spk_0 Let the desk get the motel just paying in.
spk_0 Most people who think they're really smart
spk_0 and that they're going to commit the perfect homicide, they don't.
spk_0 Sergeant Texas in Madaguardia County sits on the Gulf of Mexico
spk_0 about 70 miles southwest of Galveston.
spk_0 Madaguardia County is rural.
spk_0 It also is coastal.
spk_0 So we have a lot of hunters, fishermen, retired folks who live here.
spk_0 Sergeant is a little bedroom community.
spk_0 If you walk in there, people will want to know who are you and what are you doing here?
spk_0 They know each other.
spk_0 May 17, 2009, 8.56 pm.
spk_0 And otherwise, quiet Sunday evening in Sargent
spk_0 is shattered by an urgent 911 call.
spk_0 911?
spk_0 I need a piece.
spk_0 This is the ambulance.
spk_0 OK, what's going on?
spk_0 I just walked in.
spk_0 What's going on?
spk_0
spk_0
spk_0 And somebody wet me?
spk_0 Oh, what's going on?
spk_0 The caller, 59-year-old Kathy Grigsby, says she just found her husband
spk_0 72-year-old Jack Grigsby, unresponsive.
spk_0 Where's your husband right now?
spk_0 Is this a reply or is it too late for her?
spk_0 Is he breathing?
spk_0 I just think he's not a miss.
spk_0 Do they look like he may have possibly heard himself?
spk_0 I don't know.
spk_0 I don't know.
spk_0 Do you think somebody hurt him?
spk_0 No, no.
spk_0 No, no, no.
spk_0 Once later, first responders arrive at the home on Old Cainey Road and meet Kathy.
spk_0 It was a two-story house.
spk_0 She was crying or going on quite a bit with some hysteria.
spk_0 She kept saying, Jack is dead, Jack's dead.
spk_0 When they walked in, Grigsby was lying on the floor, blood pooled around his head.
spk_0 The recliner that he had been sitting in was overturned.
spk_0 There was no sign of life, no possible chance to resist anything.
spk_0 He has a spot of blood on his chest and then who will blood on his head where there are some sort of head wound.
spk_0 And that's when we discovered that he had a gunshot wound to his head.
spk_0 At that time, then we knew that we either had a suicide or a homicide.
spk_0 Back outside, Kathy Grigsby is inconsolable.
spk_0 She was screaming that he was dead quite loudly.
spk_0 She did break down.
spk_0 She seemed truly traumatized.
spk_0 Investigators begin to try to find out who he is, what his background is.
spk_0 Jack was kind of left about all the facts who knew him and didn't seem to have anyone that would have had any ill will towards him.
spk_0 Jack Branson Grigsby Jr. was born in Houston, Texas in 1936.
spk_0 He was the first son and he had an older sister, two years older than he was, and younger brother.
spk_0 And I came in at the very last.
spk_0 He had plans to join the seminary when he got out high school, but he went into the service instead.
spk_0 After honorably serving in the army, Jack rejoined civilian life and began a new career in Dallas.
spk_0 Jack was a very, very hard worker.
spk_0 He worked as a salesman for several years for a paper company.
spk_0 And then he eventually got so good at it that he opened his own paper company.
spk_0 Jack loved people and he entertained his customers whenever they would come to town.
spk_0 Jack got married in 1961 and he and his wife had two boys.
spk_0 He wanted to be there for his boys.
spk_0 He took them on camp and trips and stuff like that.
spk_0 But after more than 20 years together, Jack and his wife ended their relationship in 1982.
spk_0 They divorced eventually and went their separate ways.
spk_0 In 1991, Jack crossed paths with Kathy Harris.
spk_0 They met at a party at a French apartment and found they had some things in common.
spk_0 Kathy was born in 1949 in Bristol, Tennessee, but eventually moved to New Mexico, then Texas.
spk_0 Kathy had been kind of a nomad.
spk_0 She'd spent a lot of time in West Texas, became a bookkeeper, and ended up in the Dallas-Worth area working at a Walmart Males Center.
spk_0 Kathy's first two marriages didn't work out, but they did produce a son and daughter.
spk_0 Kathy and more or less supported her family and supported her children.
spk_0 The other great passion in Kathy's life was her service sorority, Epsilon Sigma Alpha.
spk_0 She was the chapter president of our group.
spk_0 We would just have fun risers.
spk_0 It started out like bike sales, garage sales.
spk_0 We would support and give to Saint Jude's. That was our charity.
spk_0 It was after Kathy's kids were grown up and on their own that she met Jack Grigsby.
spk_0 Though he was 13 years her senior, Kathy was drawn to Jack's laid back nature.
spk_0 He was a quite peaceful person.
spk_0 He never made waves, he was never angry.
spk_0 He was just a quiet gentleman.
spk_0 After six years together, they tied the knot in 1996, and then Jack retired in 2001.
spk_0 The couple sought a more peaceful life, leaving behind the hustle and bustle of Dallas for the quiet calm of Sargent less than five hours away.
spk_0 He just moved down here to retire on the water to where he could fish every day and just a real laid back last stop.
spk_0 52-year-old Kathy wasn't quite ready for the life of a retiree, so she got a job as a bookkeeper at the Salvation Army.
spk_0 That's where we originally met.
spk_0 Everybody was just crazy about her. She was very cheerful, happy, always looking on the brot set of things no matter what.
spk_0 Kathy stayed active in her sorority and kept busy with work, but she missed the energy of the city.
spk_0 I don't think she was happy when Jack moved her from Dallas. She went from a popular place to a nowhere place.
spk_0 They argued a lot.
spk_0 After ten years together, it was clear the age difference between 65-year-old Jack and 52-year-old Kathy had become a problem.
spk_0 She lived a different life than him. She was always wanting to be on the go.
spk_0 She had a lot of sorority sisters that she would go to Dallas to mate.
spk_0 She wanted more from him than what he was giving her.
spk_0 She said they were really struggling and not getting along, and she said I really think that it's time that we just separate.
spk_0 She had moved out and then to an apartment that Jack was paying for and a car note that Jack was paying for.
spk_0 She knew the divorce was imminent.
spk_0 By 2009, Jack was in his 70s and his health began to decline, making the split even harder.
spk_0 He had a stroke, so one side of him was arm in his leg, kind of drug.
spk_0 Jack was ill. She felt really sad. I think she struggled with, you know, their break up.
spk_0 June is when the divorce proceedings are supposed to take place. The divorce would be final at that point.
spk_0 Despite the impending divorce, Kathy often checked in on Jack when he felt ill.
spk_0 By 2009, they were back in the divorce court, but they were still on friendly terms.
spk_0 The couple seemed to be adjusting to this new chapter of life
spk_0 until the devastating night when Kathy discovers Jack dead inside the home they once shared.
spk_0 Kathy said she'd just returned from Dallas and dropped her friends off and then come back to the house.
spk_0 She had called him earlier in the week to see if he would watch her dog while she went out of town to a sorority convention.
spk_0 Of course, he loved animals and he would go and say no, and he kept the dog.
spk_0 After four days in Dallas, Kathy stopped by the house to pick up her dog.
spk_0 When she got there, she said the door was unlocked and the lights were off and she discovered him on the floor.
spk_0 Kathy says that lately, Jack had been depressed.
spk_0 There was some suggestion that he was in some poor health, didn't leave his house much any longer,
spk_0 and so there was certainly some possibility that it was a suicide.
spk_0 A deputy escorts Kathy to the Sheriff's Department for a formal interview while authorities begin to process the scene for evidence.
spk_0 Typically, if somebody had rude to cheat themselves, the gun falls very close proximity.
spk_0 We'd remove the body to make sure the gun hadn't fallen inside the chair.
spk_0 We didn't find a weapon at that time.
spk_0 That's when we knew we were working on homicide.
spk_0 Coming up, a theory takes shape.
spk_0 They found some evidence in Mr. Grigsby's journals.
spk_0 And investigators seek a mysterious suspect.
spk_0 This car kept circling, would pull up into Mr. Grigsby's driveway and leave.
spk_0 It just seems I don't know even what somebody just did.
spk_0 The homicide investigation for the death of Jack Grigsby is underway.
spk_0 After his wife, Kathy, found him dead inside his home from a gunshot wound.
spk_0 Whoever did it left something behind.
spk_0 There was a shell casing found. It was a 9mm casing.
spk_0 A spent shell casing can give you lots of other leads.
spk_0 It can be used to match a particular gun.
spk_0 We didn't see nothing damaged on the doorway.
spk_0 It was either forced open, kicked in, and none of the windows broke.
spk_0 As a wallet was in there, it had quite a bit of cash in it.
spk_0 It did not appear to anyone that had been a robbery or a burglary.
spk_0 Either Jack let someone into his home or the front door was unlocked.
spk_0 Maybe it was someone he knew because he appeared to be sitting in his chair when he was shot.
spk_0 So he was comfortable.
spk_0 We have some knowledge of the timeline and a timeframe of death based on the state of Rigger Mortis.
spk_0 Now we had a narrow window of a couple hours that we were looking at.
spk_0 Investigators look to his distressed wife, Kathy, for answers.
spk_0 And she pulls herself together to assist.
spk_0 When I first saw Kathy, she was a little hysterical.
spk_0 She became very quiet, low-key, when we interviewed her.
spk_0 She says they had the friendly relationship, yet another getting divorced.
spk_0 Kathy says she dropped her dog off with Jack on Wednesday,
spk_0 before driving to Dallas with two of her sorority sisters.
spk_0 Dallas is about five hour drive from Sargent, Texas.
spk_0 And she was there for a number of days including Sunday.
spk_0 She did provide officers with receipts that supported her alibi.
spk_0 Investigators ask Kathy who else had access to the home.
spk_0 She did bring up an individual's name of Royce Cooody,
spk_0 who had been doing some work or helping Jack remodel his house.
spk_0 She just said that she didn't know a whole lot about him,
spk_0 and then Jack could just previously met him.
spk_0 She was just given this idea that there is somebody else out there that would have access to the house.
spk_0 There was some indication that he had been to the house a number of times.
spk_0 He certainly would have been someone that would have been welcome into the house.
spk_0 So the police certainly weren't going to ignore that as a possibility.
spk_0 Investigators then ask if Kathy owns a gun.
spk_0 She said that she had a 9mm ruger that she had bought from her boss where she works.
spk_0 Her boss happened to have an extra handgun.
spk_0 Kathy claimed to need the gun for personal protection.
spk_0 There was a shell casing that was recovered,
spk_0 and the shell casing was a 9mm.
spk_0 Investigators tell Kathy they will need her to turn over the weapon.
spk_0 She agrees.
spk_0 She signed a consent to search,
spk_0 and she told her where the gun was located,
spk_0 an apartment, and I don't know if I'll stand next to her bed.
spk_0 Deputy's a company Kathy to her apartment.
spk_0 When they went into her house and did the search,
spk_0 the weapon was not where it was kept.
spk_0 She last seen her gun.
spk_0 I believe she said on Thursday before she left to go out of town.
spk_0 They began searching the other areas of the apartment just to make sure it wasn't misplaced.
spk_0 And then she claimed that the weapon had been stolen.
spk_0 There's no forced entry to her apartment.
spk_0 She told them that nobody else had a key.
spk_0 So then the only person who might otherwise have a key to her apartment
spk_0 obviously would then be the apartment managers, or of course the maintenance man.
spk_0 With no sign of a break-in,
spk_0 investigators believe it's plausible that someone with access to Kathy's home
spk_0 may have taken the gun.
spk_0 Before investigators wrap up with Kathy,
spk_0 she also gives them Royce's number.
spk_0 But when they call, it goes to voicemail.
spk_0 So they don't discount the possibility of the maintenance man or Mr. Kudybutt.
spk_0 By that point, the fact that now this gun is not there,
spk_0 that she has said was there again, places her under more suspicion.
spk_0 Despite their doubts, authorities continue trying to find Royce
spk_0 and ID the apartment maintenance man.
spk_0 Meanwhile, they get the autopsy results.
spk_0 The autopsy revealed a gunshot wound to the head, caused the death.
spk_0 We were also able to identify a probable time of death.
spk_0 Between time he was killed and time he was found, probably four or five hours.
spk_0 So it can be murdered to a place on Sunday, after 1230.
spk_0 The finding bolsters Kathy's alibi.
spk_0 She and the ladies were in the process of driving home,
spk_0 during the time frame in which Jack would have been killed.
spk_0 I think it would have been hard for her to leave from there without her friends
spk_0 and come down here and commit that crime and then go back before they would miss her.
spk_0 Investigators head back to Jack's house, where crime technicians have been processing the home through the night.
spk_0 And they've made an important find, Jack's Journal.
spk_0 The final entry details a visit from handyman Royce Kudy.
spk_0 They found some evidence in Mr. Grigsby's journals that indicated
spk_0 that Mr. Kudy had been there the day before Saturday.
spk_0 Investigators learn that someone they've been wanting to talk to is asking to speak to them.
spk_0 When they step outside the home, they find Royce Kudy himself.
spk_0 Royce came down and he wanted to know what happened.
spk_0 Mr. Kudy said that the last time he'd seen Mr. Grigsby was the Friday before his death.
spk_0 He'd done some repair work and he'd gone over to Mr. Grigsby's house to clean some fish.
spk_0 The police confronted him with that discrepancy.
spk_0 You know, hey, we've caught you in a lie. Now tell us the truth.
spk_0 Royce referred to some memory issues.
spk_0 He said he was there on Friday for a different purpose and just for God he'd been there on Saturday.
spk_0 That's his story.
spk_0 Officials ask Royce where he was during the time frame the murder took place.
spk_0 His story was on Sunday that he had got it with a friend and went fishing.
spk_0 Investigators allow Royce to leave with the understanding that they'll be following up on his alibi.
spk_0 His alibi was, he was fishing with a friend.
spk_0 When they talk to the friend, the friend confirmed that.
spk_0 Turns out he was not physically in the area.
spk_0 He had alibi waiting for that.
spk_0 It basically rules him out.
spk_0 A few hours later, just as officials are wrapping up, yet another man asks to speak with them.
spk_0 They are approached by a man, Joseph Moran, who says,
spk_0 I think that I saw something that might be important.
spk_0 Mr. Samora had related to them that he'd been fishing there the day before on Sunday.
spk_0 And in the later part of the morning, early part of the afternoon,
spk_0 that he had seen a fellow driving a car that kept showing up in that area.
spk_0 He was in fishing, he kept driving around, just, you know, and I was like, what do you do?
spk_0 There's almost no traffic out there.
spk_0 So it's very unusual on a Sunday.
spk_0 You see this car driving by the same location time and time again.
spk_0 This car would pull up into Mr. Gricks' driveway and leave.
spk_0 The car with him is a board towards.
spk_0 Joe says that afternoon, the car pulled into the driveway one last time.
spk_0 The man driving the car got out and went up to the door of Jack's to knock on the door.
spk_0 Shortly after, the same car pulled up next to Joe.
spk_0 He stopped the nasty.
spk_0 How the fish was, and I told him, they ain't no good.
spk_0 When he talked to me, I don't know.
spk_0 And he just seemed even with somebody just there.
spk_0 I kind of made me nervous.
spk_0 This individual would not look in the eye when he was talking to him.
spk_0 He was 5, 10, kind of scrumptious looking.
spk_0 He looked like a biker.
spk_0 We thought that was definitely a good hit.
spk_0 We were getting a little closer. We were closing in.
spk_0 Coming up, a hunch and a sketch turn up a suspect.
spk_0 He bragged to people about being in a biker gang that he could be somebody who could get things done.
spk_0 In November 1974, IRA bombs ripped through two Birmingham pubs killing 21 innocent people.
spk_0 Hundreds more rinsed.
spk_0 It was the worst attack on British soil since the Second World War.
spk_0 When a crime this appalling and shocking happens, you want the police to act quickly.
spk_0 And boy did they.
spk_0 The very next day they had six men in custody.
spk_0 Confessions followed, and the men were sent down for life.
spk_0 Good riddance you might think, except those men were innocent.
spk_0 Join me, Matt Ford and me, Alice Levine.

spk_0 Two days into the investigation of Jack Grigsby's murder, a witness named Joe Zamora tells authorities he saw a mysterious man at Jack's home around the time of the killing.
spk_0 Joe described the man as a white male 40s to 50s and heavy thick mustache.
spk_0 Kind of average height, average build, wearing a baseball cap and sunglasses.
spk_0 Finding the man in the Ford Tourist becomes top priority.
spk_0 This is a huge tip for us. It was a big break for us to have this witness.
spk_0 The activity that this person was doing did not seem to fit anything other than being involved in this homicide.
spk_0 He was willing to get with a forensic artist and developing sketch based upon his memory and what the individual looked like.
spk_0 We did put out the information to the surrounding areas, being looked out for anything with this guy's possible description, and the Ford Taurus.
spk_0 Although Jack's wife Kathy has an airtight alibi, there is a lingering loose end from her interview still nagging at investigators.
spk_0 She had owned a weapon of the same caliber that was used to kill Jack Grigsby, her estranged husband.
spk_0 Kathy told police that she had purchased a handgun from her boss at the Salvation Army.
spk_0 Authorities questioned Kathy's boss about the gun.
spk_0 He said, yeah, in fact, he did sell a 9mm to Kathy.
spk_0 He even showed us a bill of sale that was dated in March 2009.
spk_0 He had not only sold the gun to Kathy, he loaded it with 10 rounds of ammunition.
spk_0 He had a box that he kept with the remaining 40 chills.
spk_0 We compared it, and it was the same manufacturer, a 9mm, that was found at the scene.
spk_0 That was a little shocking.
spk_0 By that point, the police realized she could not have been the shooter, but they certainly believe that she's being deceptive.
spk_0 Kathy's alibi is, she was there at that sorority convention in Dallas.
spk_0 This is not something that can be disputed.
spk_0 With suspicions surrounding Kathy's involvement growing, detectives reach out to her for another interview, but they are surprised by her reaction.
spk_0 They're trying to get her back down the sheriff's office and she attorneys up.
spk_0 Turn the call system, represent her. Don't talk.
spk_0 After nine days of circulating the mystery man's face around Sargent, investigators haven't turned up a single lead.
spk_0 So they try a new tack.
spk_0 I remember thinking, what are the odds that somebody would stop and get gas?
spk_0 Sargent is a very small community.
spk_0 There was a Texaco, anybody that's interested in getting gas, they're going to go to that convenience store.
spk_0 That one happens to have surveillance cameras.
spk_0 Authorities review surveillance video from the day of Jack's murder.
spk_0 What they found was a vehicle that had in just around in the noon hour and sometime after that,
spk_0 had made two stops at the Texaco station.
spk_0 There was a Ford Taurus and then they saw the individual come out.
spk_0 He picked the Jones description from the sketch.
spk_0 It was a eureka moment.
spk_0 He called me. He was very saddened, kept, kept and I got it.
spk_0 The first time he came to the store, he bought sandwiches and then came back again and bought beer.
spk_0 They use a debit card which is described as a Lone Star card.
spk_0 It's a card that is given out by local government for welfare and food stamps.
spk_0 That card is traced to a lady by the name of Suzanne Matts and she's in the Dallas area.
spk_0 They were also able to get some information from the application for the Lone Star card.
spk_0 That application included the name not only of Ms. Matts but also included the person that was living with her.
spk_0 And she was in a relationship with Daniel Reherson.
spk_0 And they were able to pull drivers license photos of Ms. Matts and Mr. Harrison.
spk_0 Daniel's photo seems to match the man in the video and the sketch.
spk_0 Who is Daniel Harrison?
spk_0 We started doing criminal history background on him to see what type of individual we're dealing with,
spk_0 what he may be capable of, he had been in prison before and he had been out on parole.
spk_0 Mostly drug history.
spk_0 There's no reason to believe that Daniel Harrison actually knew Jack Gridsby,
spk_0 which led detectives to ask, did he have a history of a copy?
spk_0 On June 4th, 2009, two and a half weeks after the murder, investigators make the 400-plus mile drive north to Denison, Texas,
spk_0 to pay a visit to Suzanne Matts and her boyfriend, Daniel Harrison.
spk_0 We went to interview them. They didn't even know we were coming.
spk_0 There was a car sitting out front that appeared to be the same car as what they had seen on the Texco video.
spk_0 So we got there, Daniel Reherson was not there.
spk_0 Susan Matts was there.
spk_0 We told Suzanne that we were investigating a death, Jack Gridsby.
spk_0 That's when we found out that there was a connection.
spk_0 She had known Kathy for several years.
spk_0 Suzanne says she met Kathy eight years earlier in 2001 when they worked together at a Walmart mail order center.
spk_0 She claimed that her relationship with Kathy was that they've been friend.
spk_0 Kathy did her taxes for every year, let they kept in touch.
spk_0 Kathy often confided in her about her problems with Jack.
spk_0 She knew that the relationship was rocky, that it was not a good relationship.
spk_0 In fact, six years earlier, Kathy made a comment that stunned Suzanne.
spk_0 In 2003, Kathy was looking to get Jack killed.
spk_0 She asked Ms. Matts, do you know of anybody that would kill Mr. Gridsby?
spk_0 And I think Susan Matts' response to that was, well, no, I don't.
spk_0 Kathy pressed, wanting to know if maybe Suzanne's boyfriend, Daniel, might be able to help her.
spk_0 Kathy had met him and she thought he was kind of a bad work because there's history of being an internet of prison.
spk_0 He bragged to people about being in a biker gang, about having connections to violence, that he could be somebody who could get things done.
spk_0 Kathy thought he may know somebody to actually kill Jack for her.
spk_0 Suzanne played it off as I didn't think she was serious.
spk_0 I thought, I didn't think she really meant it type of deal.
spk_0 She's pretty adamant that she doesn't know anything about the murder.
spk_0 When we confronted her with the fact that her car had been used on the sergeant, she admitted that she had let Daniel take her car and drive it that day.
spk_0 To her knowledge, Mr. Harrison had used her vehicle for work purposes on that Sunday.
spk_0 As investigators wrap up with Suzanne, Daniel Harrison returns home.
spk_0 He agrees to go to a nearby sheriff station for questioning.
spk_0 I started talking to Daniel.
spk_0 I said, did you know about Jack being murdered?
spk_0 He said, no, I didn't know anything about him.
spk_0 I showed him a copy of the order sketch and I could tell that it was kind of shocking.
spk_0 And I said, well, Daniel, he looks a whole lot like you to me.
spk_0 I said, now, just help me understand this.
spk_0 You say that you were not involved in this.
spk_0 But how do you think we found you?
spk_0 Nobody knows you down there. You're 450 miles away.
spk_0 How did I find you?
spk_0 Coming up, Daniel tells a harrowing tale.
spk_0 He knows you start opposing him.
spk_0 She tried to do it.
spk_0 And a potential motive emerges.
spk_0 Each of them would have received 50% of the proceeds upon his death.
spk_0 The end of the story
spk_0 Texas investigators are preparing to transport suspect Daniel Ray Harrison
spk_0 for questioning in the murder of Jack Griggsby.
spk_0 Under the law, we can lie to a suspect to give him the talk.
spk_0 We can't fabricate evidence.
spk_0 So when I was talking to Daniel Ray Harrison in my vehicle,
spk_0 I let him to believe that Kathy Griggsby had been the one who led us to him.
spk_0 By the time they reached the station,
spk_0 Daniel is feeling the heat.
spk_0 I know the site just might go up near the hall of Madrid.
spk_0 I wish that was the case, but it's just time to be case.
spk_0 I said, well, we have an eyewitness that saw you there.
spk_0 And I showed him a copy of the autoscatch again.
spk_0 That looked like me.
spk_0 That was crazy.
spk_0 Oh, he picked you up.
spk_0 You're part of the bargainist, the fully cooperate.
spk_0 So if I don't cooperate right now, just do what you've done.
spk_0 What would you have to tell me the whole story?
spk_0 So what do you want to do?
spk_0 He thought that Kathy had already spilled the beans on him
spk_0 and he was just ready to give it up and move on.
spk_0 What you wanted is long ago.
spk_0 You know she started poisoning 50 times, right?
spk_0 Daniel says Kathy had actually tried to poison him with anaphrase
spk_0 and his coffee or something.
spk_0 And it did cause some real furs.
spk_0 He got sick from it.
spk_0 Though there's no way to prove it,
spk_0 the alleged poisoning might explain Jack's decline in health.
spk_0 Daniel says when it didn't kill him,
spk_0 that's when Kathy looked for help.
spk_0 Daniel Ray Harris and Kathy Grisby first met
spk_0 and talked about killing Jack Grisby in 2003.
spk_0 They were turned to down and didn't pursue it any further.
spk_0 He says he had no contact with Kathy until March of 2009
spk_0 when Suzanne hired Kathy to do their taxes.
spk_0 At that time, Daniel claims Kathy once again
spk_0 brought up killing her husband.
spk_0 She tried to pay me.
spk_0 The prize money was 10 grand.
spk_0 Mr. Grisby had a life insurance policy of $200,000.
spk_0 She and Jack Grisby's son were 50 percent beneficiaries.
spk_0 That's how she would pay, letting him know that if I get the $100,000
spk_0 I'll give you $10,000 for killing Jack.
spk_0 He says the first time she approached me, I was not arrested.
spk_0 But Suzanne hired on hard time and we needed money.
spk_0 So once she approached me again, I said yes that I would do it.
spk_0 Kathy allegedly explained they were under a deadline.
spk_0 June is when the divorce proceedings are supposed to take place.
spk_0 She was no longer be a beneficiary of the insurance policy.
spk_0 So she would have wanted this to take place before that divorce proceeding took place.
spk_0 Daniel says two weeks later, he met Kathy in person to discuss the details.
spk_0 He claims Kathy proposed he killed Jack
spk_0 while she was at an upcoming sorority convention in Dallas.
spk_0 She's going to be in Dallas at the convention
spk_0 where he lives is a little bit north of Dallas.
spk_0 He was to go to the hotel where she was staying.
spk_0 She told Daniel Ray Harrison that I have a gun.
spk_0 It's a nine millimeter.
spk_0 Tell me the gun wasn't missing, I mean, it didn't come out of no problem with it.
spk_0 She had the weapon in her house, she had it loaded, she was prepared.
spk_0 She went to a local Walmart and had a copy of a key to her apartment made.
spk_0 She didn't make it to her apartment and that didn't just get the motos she was paying at.
spk_0 She picked it up at 3.30 a.m.
spk_0 Okay, Danny, so picked up the gun on the way out there to the house.
spk_0 And when you got out the house, was he there?
spk_0 Nope.
spk_0 Many times you go by the house for a few minutes.
spk_0 That's obvious.
spk_0 What time did he actually get there?
spk_0 I don't know 12.
spk_0 Hosting as a stranger looking for a good fishing spot, Daniel approached Jack's home.
spk_0 I thought I was going to go in and tell him what I wanted to talk about.
spk_0 Fish.
spk_0 So if you talk a little bit, what happened?
spk_0 Daniel asked him, could he go inside and use the restaurant.
spk_0 So they wanted it going inside.
spk_0 He went to the restaurant and then when he came back, he had a nine millimeter pistol.
spk_0 Jack was sitting in his lounge chair with his back to him.
spk_0 A cold coffee in the back of the air with his turnaround to the federal hangar.
spk_0 And then he proceeded to shoot him directly in the head and shot his scoosh and star.
spk_0 Daniel left the house and spoke with Joe Zamora to feel out if he had heard the shot.
spk_0 Then he called Kathy.
spk_0 Right.
spk_0 So what did you tell her?
spk_0 Done.
spk_0 And...
spk_0 Done?
spk_0 Done?
spk_0
spk_0 And her response was, how was my dog?
spk_0 Pretty cold.
spk_0 You got where the gun? Tell me about the gun.
spk_0 I'm in the barrel. I'm in the pistol.
spk_0 It had leg text on when you say, yeah.
spk_0 He went back home to Suzanne, who was numbed the wiser.
spk_0 You used to wear it to me.
spk_0 There's nothing to do with it.
spk_0 After I got a sign confession from January here at some on the murder,
spk_0 they got a public call after David and the rest of the morning where Kathy resby.
spk_0 They went to the Salvation Army and arrested her there on site.
spk_0 In front of everyone, I was really shocked.
spk_0 Kathy refuses to give a statement.
spk_0 But when authorities search her purse, her habit of keeping receipts comes back to Hauntar.
spk_0 She had a receipt for the key being made at Wal-Mart,
spk_0 which ultimately we knew was the key that she gave to Daniel Harrison
spk_0 to gain access to get the gun to commit the murder.
spk_0 So everything started coming together at that point.
spk_0 She planned this and he carried it out.
spk_0 Coming up, a hard truth comes out at trial.
spk_0 The irony of the whole thing is that she wanted to got a dime.
spk_0 But it was a total mess.
spk_0 I am not sure what happened.
spk_0
spk_0 19 days after Jack Grigsby was found shot dead in his home,
spk_0 investigators work with prosecutors to build their case against his wife, Kathy Grigsby.
spk_0 They request surveillance video from the Dallas Hotel where Kathy stayed during the convention.
spk_0 The videos pretty clearly show that she left the key at the front lobby, at the front desk,
spk_0 and instructed them who to give it to.
spk_0 And that Harrison at 3.30 in the morning came and picked it up and showed his ID.
spk_0 After we got the confession of Daniel Ray Harrison and video from the hotel,
spk_0 I felt very confident that we were making a very strong case.
spk_0 Again, Kathy Grigsby for the murder of Jack Grigsby.
spk_0 The murder of Jack Grigsby was found in the hospital.
spk_0 Authorities want to offer Daniel Harrison a deal, a murder charge, and 40 years in prison if he cooperates.
spk_0 Daniel accepted a plea deal and agreed to testify against Kathy.
spk_0 Kathy Grigsby's murder trial begins on October 25, 2010.
spk_0 Prosecutors argue that Kathy was motivated by one thing and one thing only.
spk_0 Money.
spk_0 What I think finally made Kathy snap was the fact that the divorce was starting to come to a head,
spk_0 and that Jack was cutting her off financially.
spk_0 The Accredit Cords have been run up. He'd finally cut her off the credit cords.
spk_0 He also planned to stop paying for her apartment and car loan.
spk_0 She's not going to be able to survive without his help.
spk_0 Knowing she was going to be cut off soon, prosecutors believe Kathy became desperate to change her fate.
spk_0 At trial, Daniel Harrison said that Kathy had told him that she tried herself to kill Jack through poisoning him.
spk_0 We were never able to really confirm that that had happened and it lined up with what his health issues were.
spk_0 She was getting desperate and she knew that Jack had an insurance policy.
spk_0 In a surprise twist, prosecutors reveal that Jack had already taken action to make sure Kathy wouldn't get that money.
spk_0 Jack had changed the beneficiary on his life insurance policy.
spk_0 Kathy was no longer beneficiary.
spk_0 She wasn't in the will. She wasn't going to get the house. She wasn't going to get the money.
spk_0 The irony of the whole thing is that she wouldn't have got a dime.
spk_0 Kathy's confessed co-conspirator Daniel Harrison testifies against her.
spk_0 But Kathy's defense attempts to turn the prosecution's star witness into a liability.
spk_0 Daniel Harrison is a criminal who confessed to being the person who shot Jack Griegspeed.
spk_0 Kathy's never been in trouble. She's a churchgoer. She's not somebody who would ever commit this kind of crime.
spk_0 They basically attempted to show Mr. Harrison was a liar.
spk_0 The jury deliberates for just over an hour before returning a verdict.
spk_0 The jury does find her guilty at Capitol murder and Capitol murder is an automatic life sentence in Texas.
spk_0 I think the system worked. She had a dime prison. Most people who think they're really smart and that they're going to commit the perfect homicide they don't.
spk_0 I feel bad for Jack. I feel bad for his family. I'm sure he wanted to live one more day to say I love you to his kids.
spk_0 My brother is up there in heaven with my other brother and they've gone to the big fish and hole in the sky. Having a ball.
spk_0 Kathy Griegspeed is serving a life sentence. Daniel Harrison was sentenced to 40 years. He will be eligible for parole in June 20, 19. Susanne Maths was never charged.
spk_0 On Boxing Day 2018, 20-year-old Joy Morgan was last seen her church. Israel United in Christ or IUIC.
spk_0 I just went on my Snapchat and I just see her face. I lost it everywhere.
spk_0 This is the missing sister. The true story of a woman betrayed by those she trusted most.
spk_0 IUIC is my family and like the best family that I've ever had. But IUIC isn't like most churches.
spk_0 This is a devilish cult. You know when you get that feeling right you just I don't want to be here. I want to go out. It's like that feeling of a kind of going out.
spk_0 I'm Charlie Brent Coast Cough and after years of investigating Joy's case I need to know what really happened to Joy.
