spk_0
She was not expecting that.
spk_0
Kristen Cavalieri from Laguna Beach.
spk_0

spk_0
Yes.
spk_0
Do you play the lottery?
spk_0
No.
spk_0
The chances of your winning is like a nipple hair.
spk_0
Like it really, I don't know why I was like, I don't know.

Woohoo!
spk_0
She may have been born San Vrayon, but Bravo Hollocks know her best is Captain Sandy on the
spk_0
hit series below deck Mediterranean, which is back.
spk_0
Oh, I'm so excited for its 10th season new episodes air Monday at 8 p.m. on Bravo and stream
spk_0
the next day on peacock from her leadership style to managing crew personalities from all
spk_0
walks of life.
spk_0
The Florida native truly knows what it means to be the calm before the storm.
spk_0
Oh, that's right.
spk_0
And during the storm, it is not a secret that I am a huge fan of everything below deck.
spk_0
And I'm so excited.
spk_0
This is not the first time for me that the captain has not taken a tender in for a chat.
spk_0
Captain Sandy, always happy to see you.
spk_0
You too.
spk_0
Thanks for having me.
spk_0
Wow, that's a nice intro.
spk_0
Isn't it?
spk_0
And I'm going to just right now love the new hair.
spk_0
Love the new hair.
spk_0
Thank you.
spk_0
We are doing it.
spk_0
She, it's on point.
spk_0
I'm going to get to below deck in just a minute.
spk_0
But first congratulations are in order.
spk_0
You just celebrated your one year anniversary with Leah.
spk_0
It was amazing and every day I get to spend with hers incredible.
spk_0
That is just I'm so happy for you guys.
spk_0
And I got remarried this last year.
spk_0
Now is Leah your first wife?
spk_0
Yes, ever.
spk_0
First love.
spk_0
I never had to do for her.
spk_0
No one existed.
spk_0
Got it.
spk_0
But you are not Leah's first foray into marriage.
spk_0
No, not Leah's.
spk_0
Right.
spk_0
But mine.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
Well, because I'm going to have to speak to her.
spk_0
Actually put her on for a sec.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
Come on over here.
spk_0
We're ready.
spk_0
Where is she?
spk_0
Come on.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Hello.
spk_0
Hi.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
I got remarried earlier this year.
spk_0
So technically I'm a second wife.
spk_0
Because Steve was married before.
spk_0
So everyone keeps asking me what it's like to suddenly be a second wife.
spk_0
Do you can you give me any advice?
spk_0
Like I know I've learned in relationships.
spk_0
But how are you finding it different being a second wife rather than a first wife?
spk_0
Well, she's a woman and the first woman was a man.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
Well, let's thank you for pointing out the obvious.
spk_0
So completely opposite.
spk_0
And she has made me be more myself in this marriage.
spk_0
I'm more myself in this marriage.
spk_0
First marriage I was 27.
spk_0
We were married 20 years and he was much older, 20 years older.
spk_0
So I'm just now I'm older and wiser and happier now.
spk_0
I would play more.
spk_0
Do you think you say you play more?
spk_0
I play more.
spk_0
I play more.
spk_0
I play more.
spk_0
Just everything.
spk_0
The passion, the laughter, the life, everything is different.
spk_0
What I have found for myself is from the beginning.
spk_0
I was unapologetically me.
spk_0
Yes, absolutely.
spk_0
Yeah, I'm just more myself now.
spk_0
I'm more comfortable in this relationship.
spk_0
And I can just be myself.
spk_0
Why are you not now?
spk_0
Are you?
spk_0
Oh, but in the past we all put on.
spk_0
You know, I'm just a little bit more comfortable in this relationship.
spk_0
And you know, a friend of mine used to say,
spk_0
don't forget, for at least the first six months,
spk_0
you're only meeting the representative.
spk_0
Yeah, that's so funny.
spk_0
I found, with Steve.
spk_0
From day one, I was like,
spk_0
take it or leave it.
spk_0
Like, this is who I am.
spk_0
I am.
spk_0
Of course I can be flexible,
spk_0
but there are certain fundamental things about me that are just not going to change.
spk_0
And I think with said with Sandy.
spk_0
Maybe she gives me courage to take the leaps of faith that I wouldn't have taken before.
spk_0
Like in business and in life, she's like, she is more like, yes, let's do it.
spk_0
And I'm like, why?
spk_0
Like I'm more careful and she's more like a daredevil.
spk_0
So she helps me take more risks than life and she trusts me and she believes in me.
spk_0
She's not controlling and she's not just, she's, we're more like, I don't know.
spk_0
Which is chill.
spk_0
You know, we have to have fun.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
We have an art that she goes in films and she does her thing and comes back a few months
spk_0
later and I'm doing my thing and we trust each other and it's just, it's just great.
spk_0
We can be ourselves.
spk_0
spk_0
Here's the big question after Sandy being away.
spk_0
How hard is it to get used to not being able to sleep diagonally in the bed and have
spk_0
to share the remote?
spk_0
Well, we have a dog who takes her place.
spk_0
So I'm not, okay.
spk_0
That didn't come out quite right.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
I get it.
spk_0
What you're saying.
spk_0
spk_0
Yes.
spk_0
I get to have my makeup all over the counters and I don't have to like worry about putting
spk_0
it away.
spk_0
I can watch my Kardashians.
spk_0
I'm sorry for your makeup away.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
That's your story.
spk_0
I never.
spk_0
I do.
spk_0
And I can watch my Kardashians.
spk_0
I can watch all my trash television shows and not worry.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
I have another thing.
spk_0
What do you enjoy about them screaming at each other?
spk_0
And I choose a lot of weight when she leaves because I can get on a routine and, and, you
spk_0
know, when you're in love, you see the glasses.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
I just love you.
spk_0
I love you too.
spk_0
You guys get back to your, but yeah, great.
spk_0
Great to see you.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
It's been, so when you're newlywed, very excited, but it's been two years since you wrote
spk_0
your book, Be the Calm or Be the Storm, which is very apt.
spk_0
Actually, now that we're talking about relationships and a lot has changed, for instance, you were single.
spk_0
You were a single girl adrift on the high seas when you wrote the book.
spk_0
Looking back, is there anything, and I know from writing books, I feel that way.
spk_0
There's something you wish you could change either the way, like, I know I look at
spk_0
my books and I'm like, hmm, not the right word choice or that joke didn't land.
spk_0
Some of my family members struggled.
spk_0
So, I think I would let them proofread it.
spk_0
Interesting.
spk_0
Would you let them edit it or would you cave?
spk_0
Cave is wrong word.
spk_0
Do some of their past.
spk_0
I would let them repeat it.
spk_0
Yes, I probably would.
spk_0
Yes, I would definitely cave.
spk_0
Interesting, because you're not a cave kind of person.
spk_0
I would because they're my family and I don't want to hurt their feelings.
spk_0
But sometimes, the thing is, I think the book really reaches people.
spk_0
Because sometimes when you see people on TV, you think they're perfect and they've had
spk_0
an easy life and that's not the case.
spk_0
I love social media.
spk_0
People could be wrong real and before it's like, yeah, I didn't, I struggled.
spk_0
I read the book and now here I am because I changed choices.
spk_0
It's all about choices.
spk_0
So, you've been in, I mean, all these things I never, you know, that you kind of know,
spk_0
but you don't realize it to you really start preparing for something.
spk_0
You have been in the maritime business for almost 40 years.
spk_0
I mean, do you remember the exact moment when you were like, ah, you know, a sailor's
spk_0
life for me?
spk_0
There had to be a pivotal, you're and you're very aware.
spk_0
Do you remember that exact moment?
spk_0
I do.
spk_0
I was on a 67 foot hat or is working for John Flynn, making my very first crossing to
spk_0
the Bahamas for the first time in my life.
spk_0
Like literally never really been crossing the Atlantic Ocean.
spk_0
And I thought to myself, this is a career.
spk_0
Oh my God.
spk_0
I'm on a boat.
spk_0
I see dolphins.
spk_0
This water's beautiful.
spk_0
I'm in the Bahamas.
spk_0
Like, all I got to do is clean it.
spk_0
You know what I mean?
spk_0
And driving once in a while, like it was really cool.
spk_0
So to me, I was like, wow, I want to take this further.
spk_0
And I knew that he would invest in me because we had had that conversation.
spk_0
And there was no turning back for me.
spk_0
It was all aboard.
spk_0
I am in.
spk_0
I want to, you know, cross the Atlantic.
spk_0
I want to do great things.
spk_0
But I had no idea about the responsibility side, the weather, all of these things that
spk_0
come into place, they're broken down engines, what happens in the middle of the sea, which
spk_0
those moments came later.
spk_0
Thankfully, but a big learning curve.
spk_0
But yes, that was a pivotal moment for me.
spk_0
My very first time crossing over to the Gulf Stream.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
When you're like, this is it, which is such a special moment to have.
spk_0
But let's, you know, get into the show.
spk_0
You are working with a lot of familiar faces.
spk_0
And there is so much to unpack.
spk_0
But you have a brand new boat that we have never seen before.
spk_0
The bravado, maybe a little on the nose for being on Bravo.
spk_0
I'm just going to point that out.
spk_0
But the bravado, even you seem impressed by the boat.
spk_0
It's a nice boat.
spk_0
Yes.
spk_0
Yeah, it's beautiful.
spk_0
It's a great boat.
spk_0
Smaller, a lot smaller.
spk_0
We went from, I believe, moustique to bravado.
spk_0
And moustique was a very volume size vessel.
spk_0
Right?
spk_0
So it was 180 feet, I think, maybe a little over.
spk_0
But it was a full displacement bravado, full displacement.
spk_0
But smaller, I think, 47 meters, which is, which is how many?
spk_0
347 feet.
spk_0
147 feet, something like that.
spk_0
And so a lot smaller.
spk_0
So the crew had to figure out things.
spk_0
I believe we were storing some provisions in crew cabin.
spk_0
So that was interesting.
spk_0
And yeah, it was tie quarters, great boat, great sea boat, great builder.
spk_0
But yeah, it was great.
spk_0
I love the boat.
spk_0
Well, that's important.
spk_0
It would be bad if you didn't.
spk_0
It would not be good.
spk_0
But so many familiar faces, which is so fun.
spk_0
Asia, Max, Nathan, who within the first seconds of the show,
spk_0
we find out that Nathan and Gale, who are both deck hands in season nine,
spk_0
are expecting a child.
spk_0
Now, I need to know.
spk_0
Did you know if Nathan knew because from the trailer,
spk_0
we know someone is pregnant.
spk_0
And in July, people magazine knew it was Gale.
spk_0
See, so it's like, did you know that everyone knew that they were pregnant?
spk_0
When they started, did Nathan know like, where, where do we pick up in the series?
spk_0
So, I did not know.
spk_0
I don't think when Nathan this season,
spk_0
they didn't know because she wasn't pregnant then, right?
spk_0
So, right.
spk_0
Right.
spk_0
So, she wasn't pregnant.
spk_0
I don't think in the beginning of the season.
spk_0
Because you know, Nathan and Gale went their separate ways after our last season.
spk_0
So, they left together, but they kind of like went their separate ways.
spk_0
And I thought, I didn't think they were seeing each other when they started,
spk_0
which they were not technically still seeing each other on this season.
spk_0
They were not seeing each other because I asked Nathan,
spk_0
I go, hey, how are you and Gale?
spk_0
And he goes, no, it was, it's off.
spk_0
They kind of went their separate ways.
spk_0
And that's how this season's, I mean, it is from the trailer.
spk_0
It is jam packed.
spk_0
So, Nathan's having a baby.
spk_0
You also literally give him a big boost right off the bat
spk_0
and you make him your boastson.
spk_0
And you don't hand out titles like Willie Nilly, but right off the bat, he's faltering.
spk_0
How did you, did you question your decision?
spk_0
Well, not at all.
spk_0
Nathan's excellent at line handling.
spk_0
Nathan really knows how to handle a boat.
spk_0
Nathan's been at sea for many, many years.
spk_0
He knows what he's doing.
spk_0
Nathan's learning this season is to learn how to be a boastson.
spk_0
And that means given direction and trust.
spk_0
So, when you take over a new leadership role, you have to learn to not try to do
spk_0
everything yourself, but give direction and trust that your team could do that
spk_0
and allow them to make their mistakes.
spk_0
I think Nathan's struggle is explaining how to do things.
spk_0
I think he's so in his head.
spk_0
He knows what's next, right?
spk_0
So, he needs to learn to lay that plan out and give that direction and let go.
spk_0
Because you are clearly a natural communicator.
spk_0
Did he learn how to communicate or date down in there?
spk_0
I mean, I don't think he's a natural communicator.
spk_0
How do you get that out of someone?
spk_0
They're surprised to the occasion, right?
spk_0
So, I don't think you can force it out of someone.
spk_0
I think the pressure that you apply, I apply him a pressure applyer
spk_0
because I believe when you add pressure, it makes you better, right?
spk_0
To a point.
spk_0
So, for me, I'm just going to keep applying the pressure, reinstating my expectations.
spk_0
This is what I need from you.
spk_0
This is how I would do it.
spk_0
Here's some examples.
spk_0
Now just go do it.
spk_0
So, Nathan, yeah, I mean, he struggles, but he gets through it.
spk_0
He's a good human being at his core.
spk_0
So, in his honest, like I trust Nathan, I would want Nathan in my lifeboat.
spk_0
That's how I determine.
spk_0
Wow.
spk_0
This boat was sinking.
spk_0
Nathan would be the one leading everyone to the lifeboat.
spk_0
Because that's his quickness.
spk_0
Nathan's quick and he knows what's next.
spk_0
He just needs to learn to give that direction.
spk_0
Wow.
spk_0
That is a huge compliment and you do not give those out.
spk_0
Those are earned in compliments like that are earned from you.
spk_0
Because now it's just starting.
spk_0
So, the exterior seemed to be struggling a little where the interior seems to
spk_0
actually really have their shit together very early.
spk_0
It's got to be because of Asha.
spk_0
I mean, at this point, and she's engaged.
spk_0
I mean, there is so much going on.
spk_0
And she cut her hair.
spk_0
I'm not that I'm shallow.
spk_0
I notice everybody's hair, but let's be honest.
spk_0
I do.
spk_0
I mean, she has come so far.
spk_0
What kind of a leader have you seen her turn into?
spk_0
Because it's been a metamorphosis.
spk_0
I mean, it's really been a big difference.
spk_0
Well, my gosh, Asha, you know, from our first season together where we were just talking
spk_0
about this, we were out to dinner.
spk_0
And I would always say what's her highs and lows.
spk_0
And she said, I never gave compliments to the interior.
spk_0
From that moment forward, I thought I like her because she's honest.
spk_0
She's not afraid.
spk_0
And that's what it takes to lead a team.
spk_0
You can't be afraid and you have to be honest.
spk_0
And I liked her brutal honesty, but she didn't do it in a mean way.
spk_0
It was in a kind way because Asha's kind.
spk_0
So having her come back on board, Asha continued to work in the industry.
spk_0
She went to classes.
spk_0
She learned about wines and service.
spk_0
So she came back to me well-equipped.
spk_0
And she wanted to prove to me that she could do this job.
spk_0
And I love that.
spk_0
So I love her.
spk_0
I love her as a human being.
spk_0
We were our in each other's lives for the rest of our lives, that's for sure.
spk_0
And I love her new hairstyle.
spk_0
It's great.
spk_0
And Asha's so focused.
spk_0
She's a great leader.
spk_0
She's kind.
spk_0
She's great at explaining.
spk_0
She sets her expectation.
spk_0
And, you know, she has her challenges.
spk_0
And when she needs help, she'll come to me for support.
spk_0
But other than that, I stay out of it.
spk_0
I'm just going to pitch out the idea that you marry them on the boat.
spk_0
Her and the fiancee.
spk_0
I'm just pitching out the idea that's all I'm going to do.
spk_0
What advice would you give her about married life?
spk_0
My advice would be keep communicating no matter how painful it is.
spk_0
Like, listen, just for me, it's like listening.
spk_0
I got to pay more attention and listen.
spk_0
That I know, because I'm just so busy in my mind.
spk_0
And Asha's also a busy person, because, you know, when you're given this platform,
spk_0
it kind of takes your focus to refocus back on your person, takes a discipline.
spk_0
But it's also the love of the heart.
spk_0
And I love that Leah's, I'm grateful that Leah came from this world.
spk_0
So she gets it.
spk_0
Scott didn't.
spk_0
Right.
spk_0
So Asha's going to be a little harder.
spk_0
And Asha, she has a time.
spk_0
She puts her phone down.
spk_0
And it's just for me, it's about the communication and taking that time and listening
spk_0
to what the person's saying to you, your person.
spk_0
Well, speaking of listening, you have a number of catch phrases, sort of.
spk_0
And you say, very often, as a captain, anyway, in all my years of experience,
spk_0
that's one of your favorites.
spk_0
As a captain, when you're giving instruction, but my personal favorite and
spk_0
talks about communication, stop speaking.
spk_0
Don't you wish it in life?
spk_0
You could just go up to people go, stop speaking.
spk_0
Stop talking now.
spk_0
Yes.
spk_0
Absolutely.
spk_0
I do use that.
spk_0
And I always say, when I say that, I'm getting angry.
spk_0
It's like when a dog barks, they're warning you.
spk_0
That's my warning.
spk_0
Stop talking now.
spk_0
Stop speaking.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
You're only getting worse.
spk_0
It's getting worse for you.
spk_0
It's getting worse for that person, you know?
spk_0
And you're like, it's going to be good for you.
spk_0
I always warn Steve and my son that as long as I'm yelling isn't the right word, I'm
spk_0
engaged.
spk_0
Once I go silent, it's not going to end well for anyone in the room.
spk_0
That's my like, you want to keep me engaged because what's coming next if I get quiet
spk_0
is not good.
spk_0
But do you?
spk_0
How would you take it if someone said, yeah, if someone said to you, stop speaking.
spk_0
How would that go?
spk_0
Well, I've never my superior and I was acting like an idiot.
spk_0
Like, you know, I would think maybe I should stop speaking now.
spk_0
I would actually take that on as a warning going, okay, I heard you, I will stop talking
spk_0
now.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Like, because I'm, I get it.
spk_0
Like if someone says that, then what I'm saying probably isn't a good thing.
spk_0
So why don't I just stop talking?
spk_0
I'm going to give you one of my favorites, especially when I'm losing an argument.
spk_0
This is when I default to is you're stupid because that really does stop people in their
spk_0
tracks.
spk_0
Even if they're, even if you're wrong and you're losing, you just go, you're stupid and
spk_0
walk away.
spk_0
I'm telling you, you are going to work this into the room.
spk_0
You're working.
spk_0
I don't, I see.
spk_0
I don't, I don't think I can do that, but I could do this.
spk_0
That was stupid.
spk_0
I don't think I could call someone, but I could say that was a stupid move.
spk_0
I, my thing is, if I say now I'm fucking pissed, I did that, that's where I'm there.
spk_0
So that's what I say.
spk_0
No, I'm fucking pissed.
spk_0
And I use that with Nathan.
spk_0
But fucking shit together.
spk_0
Right.
spk_0
So I start swearing.
spk_0
And that's when I get mad.
spk_0
I start using the following language.
spk_0
And I really want to do that.
spk_0
And then I say to them, you take my smile away, it really upsets me.
spk_0
It's not necessary.
spk_0
So let's try not to do that next time.
spk_0
Like, this is the course that are to live like this.
spk_0
Then it has to be now.
spk_0
Because why do we have to go there?
spk_0
Just do your job.
spk_0
Right.
spk_0
Which, by the way, I really love doing your stupid.
spk_0
It's really the default when you're losing an argument.
spk_0
Not calling them stupid when you're losing an argument.
spk_0
And you default to your stupid.
spk_0
It at least catches them off guard and gives you a chance to think.
spk_0
I also often do the point to the door.
spk_0
Like just, no, just.
spk_0
Yeah, those are not that I.
spk_0
You thought you had kids.
spk_0
Yeah, not that I lose a lot of arguments.
spk_0
I'm just going to say my other favorite with Cooper used to be.
spk_0
I suggest you think very carefully about the next thing
spk_0
that's about to come out of your mouth.
spk_0
That's a good one.
spk_0
Yes, choose your words.
spk_0
Why?
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Yeah, exactly.
spk_0
Yeah, you know, I think that with crew, I always say, you know, I had no idea
spk_0
when I say come to the bridge.
spk_0
They think they're in trouble automatically.
spk_0
And like, why is come to the bridge mean you're in trouble?
spk_0
It's just where I am.
spk_0
It's a position of I really am always on the bridge.
spk_0
So it's your office.
spk_0
Yes, exactly.
spk_0
So they're like, oh my God, what I do.
spk_0
And you see all the crew's faces change when I go, when they're around me,
spk_0
I go, Nathan, come to Nathan to the bridge, right?
spk_0
And you see the eyes go like this.
spk_0
You're like, it's not a bad thing unless it is.
spk_0
Why should I be concerned?
spk_0
Why are you looking like that?
spk_0
Then I start getting in my head.
spk_0
Why are they freaked out that I just called Nathan to the bridge?
spk_0
Is there something I should know?
spk_0
Right.
spk_0
What did they do that I don't know?
spk_0
By the way, I always feel like a little fear is not a bad thing.
spk_0
Keep some sharp, you know, keep some sharp.
spk_0
Keep some sharp because you don't want to start qualifying going, Nathan to the bridge.
spk_0
Don't worry about it.
spk_0
You're not in trouble.
spk_0
That loses a little something in the translation.
spk_0
I don't say that.
spk_0
I don't say that.
spk_0
No, but I'm saying, I want them to walk with a purpose to the bridge.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Don't worry.
spk_0
Take your time.
spk_0
So it is so hard to believe that.
spk_0
We first met you on the second season in 2016.
spk_0
Yeah, it's crazy.
spk_0
That's insane.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Time flies.
spk_0
It's just so weird.
spk_0
Great experience in my life.
spk_0
I wouldn't change it for anything.
spk_0
Definitely I've evolved as a human being because I get to watch myself back.
spk_0
I've changed in a good way.
spk_0
I had to become more, I had to be less involved like in more of a TV
spk_0
captain.
spk_0
And you know, carries learning.
spk_0
You know what it means?
spk_0
So I watched that and I think, yep, they're all we're all going to learn.
spk_0
We all have to learn because when you're working on a super yacht and you're working
spk_0
for these people, you can't be learning on them.
spk_0
No, you a lot of learning on people, which is a normal.
spk_0
It's like walking into the four seasons and saying they've never been in hospitality
spk_0
before they've never made a bed.
spk_0
They're only going to make half of it because we only slept on half the bed.
spk_0
You know, the chef's going to be new and trying to figure it out in the
spk_0
gallery and your service is going to be new.
spk_0
That's not the case.
spk_0
So I had to learn that I'm going to have a lot of green crew.
spk_0
And my expectation has changed.
spk_0
And I just want to have fun doing this and watch them grow and have fun.
spk_0
So yeah, I've changed.
spk_0
What I also find and which also I can't believe I've been watching the show since 2016.
spk_0
I mean, where has my life gone?
spk_0
My so much of my life revolves around what day is below deck on.
spk_0
So I think that's great.
spk_0
I know, but still it's, it's, you know, because you chartered in your life.
spk_0
You always started with your family.
spk_0
Like you've quite done that.
spk_0
So you know how it is.
spk_0
And you're like, oh, yeah, that wouldn't have.
spk_0
Yeah, that's why they do down below.
spk_0
Oh, I said no idea.
spk_0
Right.
spk_0
Exactly.
spk_0
But I spent the year, but you're still living it.
spk_0
Well, you still live it and have experiences.
spk_0
So it's really cool.
spk_0
You watch it like that and you're so dedicated.
spk_0
I some call it dedicated.
spk_0
Some call it obsessed.
spk_0
It really depends.
spk_0
And I've gotten Steve completely obsessed.
spk_0
Like, it's below deck night.
spk_0
Like it's, it's a whole thing in Tuesday nights because we watch it on the
spk_0
streaming.
spk_0
Like our, we're like, ooh, below deck, like our entire evening is built around
spk_0
this. And I will own that.
spk_0
That is not healthy.
spk_0
But it's, it's something we do together.
spk_0
But what I find when I look at the world in general, I look at the 20
spk_0
some things that I would work with in 20, 20, 20 years ago, had a very
spk_0
different attitude than the 20 some things I work with now.
spk_0
And there's a whole different.
spk_0
Level.
spk_0
And as I often say to my son when he's like, oh my god, it work.
spk_0
I'm like, at least you don't come out of the world that we did when they
spk_0
can't throw things at you anymore.
spk_0
But as a leader, what differences?
spk_0
I mean, there's, there's extreme differences in the work ethic is the wrong
spk_0
word, but leading that kind of a group from 20, you know, they're not
spk_0
from 20 years ago.
spk_0
I get it now.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
So very different parenting, right?
spk_0
So parenting, we were raised fear based.
spk_0
So then Leah explained it to me.
spk_0
She wanted to raise her child without threatening her child, right?
spk_0
But I did see her shut her life down a few times.
spk_0
So she did threaten her.
spk_0
And the I go back to I go back to a little fear is a good thing.
spk_0
Yes.
spk_0
There were some shutdowns of life.
spk_0
The phone taken away.
spk_0
But our parents, we had a very different generation raising up to the
spk_0
generation that these kids are now.
spk_0
And yeah, very different, not as motivated.
spk_0
I will say the Leah's daughter of Lauren is very motivated.
spk_0
She's unique in the the sphere of that generation.
spk_0
Very focused on work.
spk_0
She wanted to work since she was 15.
spk_0
The minute she could raise make money, she was out there to do it.
spk_0
And 1000%.
spk_0
She worked for Trader Joe's for a while.
spk_0
She got a transfer to the plant section.
spk_0
She stayed three hours after to learn the plants.
spk_0
She wanted the knowledge of learning the plants that does not exist.
spk_0
No, right.
spk_0
Yeah, she's in a university now.
spk_0
She's at Boulder, see you see you Boulder.
spk_0
So now I am I as a captain, I'm a sponge.
spk_0
I want information, information I want to learn, learn, learn.
spk_0
That's not the case.
spk_0
People just want to have fun, do as much or as little as possible to earn their
spk_0
income and move on and go do whatever they want to do.
spk_0
Very different.
spk_0
I struggle with it.
spk_0
I don't know how to change that.
spk_0
I think it all starts at the home in the house.
spk_0
And it's the parenting.
spk_0
I think parenting.
spk_0
You don't have to beat your kid or throw a stapler at him or something like that.
spk_0
But the discipline and the expectation needs to be there in my opinion.
spk_0
And that was not the case.
spk_0
You know, I knew when I came home from school, we had to feed our animals.
spk_0
We had a lot of, we had, we had a lot of land.
spk_0
It was a lot of work and then we did our homework and then we went to bed.
spk_0
So there was a very little play time.
spk_0
But I think everybody and it's an open conversation in society that it's so
spk_0
different now and you working in close quarters with literally two generations.
spk_0
Again, 20 years.
spk_0
I find that there.
spk_0
It's forced us to be better leaders because we do have more of a sense of, of sensitivity.
spk_0
But on the other hand, what you just said is it's due the bare minimum.
spk_0
And for a personality like yours, that is really difficult to watch.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
So and also pride.
spk_0
People get confused.
spk_0
There's false pride and there's pride in what you do, right?
spk_0
The false pride is where you really, you just think you're just, you're great.
spk_0
And you are proud of something that really isn't yours.
spk_0
You know what I mean?
spk_0
That's that false pride.
spk_0
That's since the false pride.
spk_0
The pride is going, look what I just did.
spk_0
And knowing the feeling and I always say this is a crew.
spk_0
If you give 1,000% in that day, you know that you've given everything and
spk_0
it still isn't a success.
spk_0
It's a success because you have used every ounce of your being to make it a success.
spk_0
So that is the success.
spk_0
And that's something you can wake up and feel great about.
spk_0
Not everything's always going to turn out to be how you want it.
spk_0
But the effort that you put into it to make it great is the success.
spk_0
And that is the feeling that you get to walk away and feel pride.
spk_0
I just talked to the crew recently and said when someone walks in a bridge, don't
spk_0
slouch. Stand up.
spk_0
There's a presence when someone that's your elder or your boss walks in and
spk_0
you got your feet up or you're leaning up against something.
spk_0
Stand up.
spk_0
Give that respect because that is pride.
spk_0
That is saying that I am proud to be here.
spk_0
I am proud to be standing on this bridge with my captain.
spk_0
And when my captain walks in, I'm going to show the respect to that captain
spk_0
that they deserve because they work so hard to get to that bridge.
spk_0
And then you're going to get the same respect from someone else because that's
spk_0
the pride.
spk_0
That is something you should feel proud about is how you act and behave.
spk_0
And the amount of effort that you give something to make a difference in your
spk_0
career. And so I get to spend this time with these kids.
spk_0
And I know that I am making a difference in their life because we have
spk_0
these conversations when they're ready to hear it.
spk_0
Now I don't go chase them down and have it.
spk_0
If they come to me and they start asking questions, I'm all in.
spk_0
You know what?
spk_0
But that's what makes you a good leader.
spk_0
That's what makes you a great, when you're motivating, okay,
spk_0
say that's what makes you a great leader and a great motivational speaker.
spk_0
There has to be times that you walk out on that stage and see a huge
spk_0
auditorium filled with people that you go, Oh my God, I can't believe
spk_0
this may people want to hear me.
spk_0
And oh my God, I can't believe this many people want to hear me.
spk_0
You know, have you had to what was that moment like for you the first time you
spk_0
realized, wow, I am making a difference in a broad sense.
spk_0
So the fear part, I just want to speak to that like the, Oh my God, I got
spk_0
sober. So I had to sit in front of a bunch of people and tell my story, right?
spk_0
So you're like, Okay, that part, I don't really give a shit anymore.
spk_0
Because now I just tell the truth.
spk_0
And that's easy for me.
spk_0
I don't try to be someone I'm not.
spk_0
I just tell the truth.
spk_0
The other part is, um, I just, what was that question again?
spk_0
I told you.
spk_0
The question is, it's normal that you started with small lectures and then
spk_0
the engagement's got bigger and bigger and bigger and bigger.
spk_0
And for anyone, you're like, it's a double edged sword.
spk_0
Oh my God, I'm so excited that this many people want to hear me.
spk_0
But oh, shit.
spk_0
Oh my God.
spk_0
Like a lot of people want to hear me.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
It's a lot of pressure.
spk_0
And I always think if I could reach one, I've done a, I've done a good job.
spk_0
I know.
spk_0
I so I just tell the truth.
spk_0
A lot of people are obviously want to see me because of Bravo.
spk_0
I thought the show gives me good material to work with.
spk_0
What can I say?
spk_0
Yes, it does.
spk_0
I'm on YouTube and go, how would you handle that?
spk_0
You know what I mean?
spk_0
Especially the leaders.
spk_0
And I always point out what the crew look like, right?
spk_0
I love my go to's motor y'all home stabilizers,
spk_0
what the crew went through.
spk_0
And this is when I say that's, that's a team, right?
spk_0
Not one person complained.
spk_0
Not one.
spk_0
And I always talk about that.
spk_0
When the crew are faced with all these challenges at sea, we're different.
spk_0
We're built differently.
spk_0
They do not complain.
spk_0
Not at all.
spk_0
When you watch motor y'all home, Google that motor y'all homes lose the stabilizers,
spk_0
watch that video and study it because now one of those crew member complained to me,
spk_0
not one of them.
spk_0
Now, when I came up and got upset, not one of them said, I can't do this.
spk_0
They just went back to work.
spk_0
They cleaned up the mess and they went back to service.
spk_0
They get it.
spk_0
And that if that can happen in a corporation, that would be incredible.
spk_0
But that's not the case because you have so many different.
spk_0
They get to go home at night.
spk_0
We don't.
spk_0
And it's fascinating to me because we have so many different nationalities, personalities
spk_0
that just sometimes you ho is it oil and water or is it, is it just a good fit?
spk_0
And that's the training and that training makes a difference.
spk_0
So I always encourage people to just train.
spk_0
But yeah, I get, I always wonder, you know, I speak to a lot of big people.
spk_0
And my favorite one was Jersey Mikes.
spk_0
Like I really, yeah, it was awesome.
spk_0
They were great.
spk_0
There were a lot of people and they were young.
spk_0
They were young.
spk_0
They were so young.
spk_0
And I knew that I had to like, I knew I was there for a reason.
spk_0
And so it was epic.
spk_0
It was pretty cool.
spk_0
Do you now get a permanent discounted Jersey Mikes?
spk_0
I don't mean to get shallow, but these are the things that matter.
spk_0
Not very good.
spk_0
I probably get pretty sandwiched if I wanted one, but now when do you think you're
spk_0
going to hang it up?
spk_0
Mean, I feel like you'll be asked me that question or someone, what do you do?
spk_0
I go, I don't have any.
spk_0
I'm young.
spk_0
I'm, you know, 60.
spk_0
I'm not in it for another 10 for sure.
spk_0
You know what I mean?
spk_0
Leah's like, we got a travel.
spk_0
I'm tired.
spk_0
Yeah, we need money.
spk_0
So yeah.
spk_0
