spk_0 Hello again and welcome to a very special bonus episode of how to start a
spk_0 podcast, a practical crash course to designing, building and launching your
spk_0 very first podcast from the Captivate team. I'm your host Rachel, content
spk_0 executive at Captivate and you're listening to episode 8. You've launched your
spk_0 podcast, what happens now? In this episode I want to talk about what happens
spk_0 after you launch your podcast and some of the changes in mindset that you
spk_0 need to make in order to keep podcasting and still have fun with it.
spk_0 After all, podcasting is a labour of love but it should never stop being fun to do.
spk_0 I want to talk about this aspect of podcasting because it's not often talked
spk_0 about and it's easy to get a bit disillusioned once your podcast is out there
spk_0 and you're not seeing thisness flood in. Remember that imposter syndrome that we
spk_0 talked about in the very first episode, it's easy to let that doubt and that
spk_0 worry in but what's important here in the early days of your podcast is to
spk_0 just keep being motivated and keep pressing on. Before I jump into this
spk_0 episode remember that we cover all of this and more with video tutorials and
spk_0 extra bonus lessons at podcastsuccessacademy.com. Head to the bonus course of the
spk_0 podcast launch accelerator to get one-on-one coaching on basic
spk_0 podcast marketing strategies, setting up your first
spk_0 patreon offer and understanding your podcast analytics.
spk_0 So, planning this episode reminded me of something that friend of the
spk_0 podcast Matin with Clean from the podcast host wrote for the Captive Eight
spk_0 blog a while ago and I'm going to read it to you now. He says,
spk_0 podcasting is a long form content. Its growth is a slow burn and when that
spk_0 growth gains momentum the impact is deeper.
spk_0 Podcasts are powerful because they become part of their audiences habits and ask
spk_0 any podcaster who started out with no audience and they'll tell you that they
spk_0 spent their first months or even years feeling like they were talking into
spk_0 the void. If this feels like you at the moment
spk_0 rest assured that you're not wasting your time and there will be listeners
spk_0 gradually making your show part of their listening habits and buying into
spk_0 what you do. I think that's a really important
spk_0 perspective to have because listeners consume podcast really differently to the
spk_0 instant rush hit of social media, of Twitter, Facebook, video.
spk_0 Podcasting is an entirely different beast and like any hobby working at it is the
spk_0 best and most successful way to get better to attract an audience to grow your
spk_0 community and reap the rewards of podcasting. So, the focus of this episode is to
spk_0 help you find your first 100-genuine listeners. Those listeners who go on to
spk_0 become super fans and who will share your podcast far and wide.
spk_0 And that means learning some basic marketing.
spk_0 To understand how your listeners behave and to create marketing that will attract
spk_0 and engage them. For that, I'm going to call in the help of my
spk_0 trusty co-host, Mark Asquith, who's going to share his wisdom on what
spk_0 marketing and mindset approaches we've used here at RebelBase Media and
spk_0 Captivate to run our podcast successfully.
spk_0 And at this stage of this episode, I want to bring back Mark, who's going to come
spk_0 and lend his expertise to what basic marketing strategy he recommends for a
spk_0 recently launched podcast. So, Mark, what would you recommend for a podcast that's
spk_0 gone through its launch week and it's out in the wide open and maybe you're not seeing as many
spk_0 numbers as you would like. Maybe you're not seeing as many listeners or getting as much feedback
spk_0 as you'd like. What would your advice be? Many people want big numbers very, very quickly,
spk_0 but nothing really starts like that. So, that's the first thing to just get your head around
spk_0 is the fact that as long as you're progressing, as long as today you got more downloads than you
spk_0 when episode three gets more than episode two, that's really strong progress.
spk_0 But you will have to mark some time in your calendar, some way to do some marketing.
spk_0 And there's a lot to podcast marketing. There's a wider range of things that I sort of
spk_0 loosely term as this listener acquisition flow that we can talk about on later sessions and
spk_0 we talk about on our growth podcasts and in the academy and it'll captivate and so on.
spk_0 The reason I say that is that you never done with podcast marketing. I'm saying that to start with,
spk_0 now what would I do? Well, to start with, I believe that every podcast should have a repeatable
spk_0 episode marketing process. Now, this is only one piece of the puzzle, but it's the thing that most
spk_0 people do a little half baked. So, a quality episode marketing process means that for every episode,
spk_0 you've got something that is repeatable and that runs maybe for the range of a week when you
spk_0 actually release an episode. So, let's assume that you release an episode on a Wednesday.
spk_0 On a Monday and a Tuesday, you have to be doing something to tease that episode coming out,
spk_0 whether that's audiograms, whether it's snippets, whether it's poll quotes that are put into imagery
spk_0 and then shared, whether it's emailing people to let them know an episode coming up, whether it's
spk_0 whether it's doing something just to get eyes on the potential for the episode on Wednesday,
spk_0 you have to be doing it. And then on Wednesday, when you release, you've got to tell people,
spk_0 you've got to push it out to your social channels of choice. You've got to email the list if you've
spk_0 got one. You have to tell the guests that their episode is live. You've got to create the assets
spk_0 that they can then share. And then Thursday Friday, Saturday, Sunday, more of the same. Okay. But
spk_0 rather than just saying, hey, I dropped this new episode, give snippets from it. You have to give
spk_0 context around this. So, what I do with mine as an example for the podcast accelerator is 24 hours
spk_0 after the launch. For example, of an episode, I will say in case you missed it, here's what I talked
spk_0 about yesterday. And then the day after that, I'll say, here's an interesting snippet from that
spk_0 episode. And by the way, here's the link to the episode. So, what I don't do is just what a lot of
spk_0 podcasters do, which is they confuse repeatable with easy. So repeatable is just a process that you
spk_0 do for everything. Easy is sticking the episode link in your buffer queue and just letting it run.
spk_0 That ain't going to work because it's just lazy. Okay. So that's the first thing that you need to do.
spk_0 Build a repeatable episode marketing process. That usually looks like a weak cycle. And I'm saying
spk_0 that because most people release weekly, if you release twice weekly or in another schedule work on
spk_0 one for you. But what we're trying to achieve here is a repeatable marketing process. And again,
spk_0 we've got content on this. We do have content on this on the YouTube channel on the podcast,
spk_0 accelerator and so on. But you're trying to achieve something that theoretically in the future,
spk_0 you could outsource. Now, if you get that basic done, if you nail that down, yes, you can outsource it.
spk_0 But number two, you can build on it using things like the listener acquisition flow that we can get
spk_0 to later. But that is the one thing that every podcast needs a repeatable episode marketing process.
spk_0 Thanks, Mark, for that brilliant advice on marketing strategies and how we can really be effective
spk_0 and targeted with our marketing when it comes to our podcast. Where to next? How do you go from
spk_0 100 to 1000 listeners? How do you importantly keep podcasting and build a meaningful community
spk_0 for your show? As support doesn't stop here. It doesn't stop at this podcast. If you have any
