spk_0 This is exactly right.
spk_0 Introducing IVF Disrupted, the Kind Body Story, a podcast about a company that promised
spk_0 to revolutionize fertility care.
spk_0 It grew like a tech startup.
spk_0 While Kind Body did help women start families, it also left behind a stream of disillusioned
spk_0 and angry patients.
spk_0 You think you're finally like in the right hands?
spk_0 You're just not.
spk_0 Listen to IVF Disrupted, the Kind Body Story, on the iHeartRadio app, Apple podcasts,
spk_0 or wherever you get your podcasts.
spk_0 In the 1980s, modeling wasn't just a dream.
spk_0 It was a battlefield.
spk_0 It's a freaking war zone.
spk_0 These people are animals.
spk_0 The Model Wars Podcast peels back the glossy cover and reveals a high stakes game where
spk_0 survival meant more than beauty.
spk_0 Hosted by me, Vanessa Grigoriades, this is the untold story of an industry built on
spk_0 ruthless ambition.
spk_0 Listen to Model Wars on the iHeartRadio app, Apple podcasts, or wherever you get your
spk_0 podcasts.
spk_0 I just normally do straight stand-up, but this is a bit different.
spk_0 What do you get when a true crime producer walks into a comedy club?
spk_0 Answer, a new podcast called Wisecrack, where a comedian finds himself at the center
spk_0 of a chilling true crime story.
spk_0 Does anyone know what show they've come to see?
spk_0 It's a story.
spk_0 It's about the scariest night of my life.
spk_0 This is Wisecrack, available now.
spk_0 Listen to Wisecrack on the iHeartRadio app, Apple podcasts, or wherever you get your
spk_0 podcasts.
spk_0 Ooh, ah, spooky season.
spk_0 Ooh, Millie, you're scaring me.
spk_0 No, I'm not.
spk_0 Impossible.
spk_0 Impossible.
spk_0 Hi, Millie.
spk_0 Hi.
spk_0 How's your Halloween going so far?
spk_0 Oh, it's great.
spk_0 You know, my wife, Trisha and I, every Halloween, every October, we watch a horror movie, every
spk_0 night of October.
spk_0 And so this is one of my favorite times of the year.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 Just getting started, really.
spk_0 And honestly, I say Halloween, meaning it covers the entire swath of time, which is the
spk_0 entire month of October.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 And maybe a little early, maybe like, you know, kind of like last day of September, a couple
spk_0 last days of September.
spk_0 My good friend, Lucy Tomlin, Brenner has a podcast called It's Always Halloween.
spk_0 Yes.
spk_0 And she informed me that a lot of people start celebrating Halloween a hundred days
spk_0 leading up to it, which starts in July, I believe.
spk_0 Oh, yeah.
spk_0 So do you feel like in recent years, Halloween has really blown up?
spk_0 I don't remember it being this big of a deal when I was younger.
spk_0 It's, well, I think we talked about this.
spk_0 Maybe did we like maybe very like very early days of the pod, but like, yeah, it's gotten
spk_0 longer.
spk_0 The celebration has gotten longer.
spk_0 Like even just the week of many people consider the week of Halloween, the Halloween,
spk_0 like where they dress up every night and go and do stuff, Halloween themes.
spk_0 And it's depending on what day of the week also, it's almost like, you know, you always
spk_0 have to add the, if it's in the middle of the week, it's like prior and after type
spk_0 of thing.
spk_0 So it's like, it's extended for sure.
spk_0 But then also I find that maybe to Lucy's point that the stores get Halloween stuff
spk_0 way, way earlier now.
spk_0 Absolutely.
spk_0 I was at home depot back in early September full of Halloween stuff.
spk_0 Giant skeleton guy.
spk_0 I've ever seen that big old skeleton guy you can buy.
spk_0 It's like 15 feet tall.
spk_0 Yeah, that's, that's like 10 years ago.
spk_0 Like that's old news.
spk_0 Like that skeleton.
spk_0 When I see the skeleton guy now, I'm like, oh, yeah, that old thing.
spk_0 You guys just put that up.
spk_0 That's just up.
spk_0 Do you ever decorate the outside of your house for Halloween?
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 I mean, I'm kind of in a weird transitional period right now because I'm about to move
spk_0 into a new house.
spk_0 So I'm not decorating this year because all my Halloween stuff is in boxes.
spk_0 And I'm not getting them out because I'm moving soon.
spk_0 But yes, I'll do a little light.
spk_0 I'd like to do the less is more approach, to be honest.
spk_0 My thing is that a couple of years ago, I purchased a gold skeleton, ooh, life, life size,
spk_0 meaning about 15 feet tall, but like six feet tall.
spk_0 Sure.
spk_0 And the gold skeleton is very sassy and he sits on my bench on my front porch and he
spk_0 just is kind of like, what's up to like all of the FedEx and UPS drivers.
spk_0 I also am a big fan of putting fingers and hands and feet in like potted plants.
spk_0 And like little flower beds and stuff.
spk_0 I always love like, yeah, tricking the eye being like, is that a zombie coming out of
spk_0 the garden or what?
spk_0 I feel like when I see someone, even if they have just a little bit of Halloween decorations,
spk_0 a little ghost in the window, a pumpkin, I'm like, this person's school, they're down
spk_0 to clown.
spk_0 They know what's up.
spk_0 Like there's also one of my favorite things.
spk_0 And this is something that I've loved since I was a kid.
spk_0 Do you remember there's a company that I might be pronouncing it wrong?
spk_0 Is it Bistle, Basel, B-E-I-S-T-L-E?
spk_0 And they are like the OG paper Halloween decoration cut out people, which you can still
spk_0 buy on the internet.
spk_0 Like, I think you can get a lot of their stuff on Amazon.
spk_0 But they've been around since like the 1920s and they're still making these like super
spk_0 cool like old school Halloween decorations.
spk_0 Totally.
spk_0 Yeah, you would just like, you know, put some Scotch tape in the window.
spk_0 Man, I do that shit all the time.
spk_0 I love seeing those old school cut out decorations.
spk_0 They're so weird.
spk_0 That's kind of the classic Halloween cartoon look.
spk_0 That's great.
spk_0 Yeah, because back when I was a kid, that was pretty much all you had.
spk_0 You didn't really have, actually, I don't even remember like spider webs being a thing
spk_0 until I was like in high school.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 But when I, in the 80s, like when I was like an elementary school kid, like late 80s,
spk_0 mid to late 80s, this was all people did for Halloween was these cutouts in the windows.
spk_0 So I have a fondness for those.
spk_0 Very good.
spk_0 What about candy with the candy report?
spk_0 Well, I want to ask you something.
spk_0 How often do you eat a candy bar in your regular life?
spk_0 Do you want me to be completely honest with you or you want me to lie?
spk_0 This is a no judgment zone because I need no judgment from you when I give you my answer.
spk_0 So go, you can be honest.
spk_0 I'm woofing them down like 365.
spk_0 Like I will.
spk_0 This is why we host a podcast.
spk_0 Because I was going to say to you, and I'm not exaggerating here, I eat a full candy
spk_0 bar five days a week.
spk_0 Wow.
spk_0 Uh huh.
spk_0 There's a convenience store like near my house that I can walk to.
spk_0 And I'm like, hmm, I might just stop in for a quick little bite.
spk_0 It's just so easy.
spk_0 Well, here's a tea though for me.
spk_0 I love miniature chocolates.
spk_0 Like, I don't think I very rarely will buy a full-size snickers, but I'll be damned if
spk_0 I don't polish a bag of mini-snickers in like maybe two days.
spk_0 Well, those don't count.
spk_0 That's what I feel.
spk_0 I'm like, oh, if I have eight of these mini-snickers, that's sort of like a full-size candy
spk_0 bar, even though there's probably like three.
spk_0 But I love the mini-snickers.
spk_0
spk_0 It's best not to look into that too deeply, you know, because I don't think you're going
spk_0 to like the answers that you find.
spk_0 But Halloween, I just, I really go candy.
spk_0 I am a candy nut.
spk_0 Oh, too.
spk_0 And I really go candy crazy.
spk_0 And yeah.
spk_0 It's hard for me.
spk_0 I can't buy Halloween candy too early either because if it's just sitting there, you
spk_0 know, to hand out to children.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 It's the bowl is empty by the time.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 It's like October 7th.
spk_0 And I'm like, that bowl is empty.
spk_0 What are your thoughts on quickly?
spk_0 I know we're trying to do a podcast, but I have to ask.
spk_0 What are your thoughts on the like limited edition Halloween flavors of certain candies?
spk_0 Like the green Reese's pumpkins or like this grade stickers, all that stuff.
spk_0 I, I guess I don't have too strong of an opinion on it.
spk_0 Some people say the, the pumpkin shaped Reese's peanut butter cup is better than the actual
spk_0 regular peanut butter cup to which I disagree.
spk_0 So I, I guess I just, I don't have too strong of an opinion.
spk_0 I prefer the regular candy.
spk_0 I do too.
spk_0 I think it's actually kind of nasty.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 I think it's the, the, like new flavors, the new iterations of things.
spk_0 I'm like, now I just stick with the original.
spk_0 You can change the shape, but the inside needs to be old school.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 Because I will eat a Reese's egg for, for Easter, I'll eat a Reese's pumpkin, but I don't
spk_0 want like a candy corn flavored Reese's, you know what I mean?
spk_0 Like I don't want the variations.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 Very good.
spk_0 Uh, there's something in the agenda that I don't understand what I, I mean, you talked
spk_0 about this and I saw what you did, but cinnamon broom update.
spk_0 You got a cinnamon broom update for us.
spk_0 Casey, it's like you don't even know me or something.
spk_0 I don't know.
spk_0 I'm getting to know you through the podcast, but you were there.
spk_0 Well, I was there.
spk_0 I talked about this on, I saw what you did.
spk_0 I was not there.
spk_0 I, I actually started as the producer on the show after the big cinnamon broom conversation.
spk_0 Okay.
spk_0 Maybe, maybe that's true.
spk_0 But there were ripples.
spk_0 There were aftershocks.
spk_0 And so now this is my way of saying I'm embarrassed that you got to explain it a little
spk_0 bit to me.
spk_0 Well, I mean, as many of you know, who have listened to my other podcast and just know
spk_0 me personally, I'm a huge fan of cinnamon brooms in this time of year.
spk_0 And what those are are cinnamon scented little brooms.
spk_0 Like, I think you can get them at Trader Joe's.
spk_0 You can definitely get them at Trader Joe's.
spk_0 And when I lived in LA, when I was absolutely starved for fall festival magic and got pretty
spk_0 much nothing, that cinnamon broom from Trader Joe's was the only thing that kept my head
spk_0 in the game because fucking LA, no seasons.
spk_0 There's no fall in LA.
spk_0 And it drove me crazy.
spk_0 Yeah, and it'll be like 102 degrees on Halloween.
spk_0 That's really hard.
spk_0 I know.
spk_0 I was like, yo, can we get like an apple spice candle up in here?
spk_0 And there's like nothing.
spk_0 And I was so bereft of fall sick.
spk_0 But you can get it by Trader Joe's.
spk_0 I have secured mine.
spk_0 I will say this again, underscore this.
spk_0 I said this last year.
spk_0 Do not fuck with any other sense other than cinnamon.
spk_0 I'm serious.
spk_0 Here it is people listen up.
spk_0 Like I said, but the candy, they're trying it.
spk_0 They're trying to put out like mojito flavored cinnamon breams.
spk_0 And I'm like, this is fucking insane.
spk_0 Like no, don't, do not.
spk_0 Don't fall for it.
spk_0 Don't fall for it.
spk_0 Do not, you know, fall for the scented broom juggernaut.
spk_0 I say juggernaut every episode, but I mean it.
spk_0 Like they're trying to like create all of these different sense.
spk_0 They're not even false sense.
spk_0 A lot of them are not false sense in its bullshit.
spk_0 The original, the OG is the best.
spk_0 And also I think they've realized maybe this is maybe this was
spk_0 my influence, but you know, that people are trying to get their hands
spk_0 on more cinnamon breams.
spk_0 And this is not the cinnamon whisk, by the way.
spk_0 The whisk is the tiny version that's like handheld.
spk_0 But I've seen them trying to charge outrageous prices for these
spk_0 breams like in the past couple weeks where my local publics,
spk_0 I think somebody said that the cinnamon breams for $7.99.
spk_0 Then I spat out my candy corns and was like, absolutely not.
spk_0 $7.99 for a cinnamon broom.
spk_0 You've got to be paying like bare bare minimum.
spk_0 You're trying to get that shit for $4.99.
spk_0 That's it.
spk_0 Nothing higher, maybe like $5.50, but like you don't want to pay
spk_0 $8 for cinnamon broom.
spk_0 That's insane.
spk_0 You know, that's a recession indicator right there.
spk_0 Cinnamon boom.
spk_0 Well, I mean, I'm sitting here going, okay, is it a tariff thing?
spk_0 Absolutely not.
spk_0 You know, who's making cinnamon breams is little old witches?
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 In the forest.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 But those are American witches.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 And they have fallen on hard times.
spk_0 But they're just going to get like sticks.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 And the woods, they're not like importing sticks from Scandinavia
spk_0 or something.
spk_0 Come on.
spk_0 Just be able to look out, be an informed consumer.
spk_0 People eyes open.
spk_0 Do not get a mojito flavored broom.
spk_0 Stick with the cinnamon.
spk_0 And otherwise have an amazing Halloween.
spk_0 Can I tell you a quick L.A. Halloween story?
spk_0 Very quick.
spk_0 Did you ever go on the haunted hay ride?
spk_0 Which is in Griffith Park.
spk_0 Oh, basically you get on this big hay ride.
spk_0 It's pulled by a tractor and they pull you through like these big
spk_0 Halloween scenes.
spk_0 It's kind of like you're in a haunted house, but you're on a tractor
spk_0 going through like haunted house scenes.
spk_0 And it's really cool.
spk_0 I think it's cool.
spk_0 And it's like really choreographed.
spk_0 Like you'll go through like, you know, the tractor will like go through
spk_0 like a set that's like an old church or like an insane asylum.
spk_0 And then everyone will run and jump up on the haunted hay ride cart
spk_0 and be like, ah, and it's exciting.
spk_0 And it's in it's in Griffith Park.
spk_0 So you're like in the woods kind of.
spk_0 See, I want to say a friend of mine went one year and said that she got some kind of weird
spk_0 itch from the hay.
spk_0 Like there was some kind of like sugar like a hay flee or something.
spk_0 Oh, okay.
spk_0 We may have had an infected batch of hay.
spk_0 It's like, oh, yeah.
spk_0 She said that she went.
spk_0 She was wearing shorts was like, that's your first problem.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 But then she got some kind of itch on her leg from the hay.
spk_0 And I was like, you know, because I don't know what to say.
spk_0 I don't know what to say.
spk_0 You know, I don't know.
spk_0 I'm so happy.
spk_0 It's haunted.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 But anyways, I went, I went for a couple years in a row.
spk_0 And one time we went, I'm with Trisha, my girlfriend at the time.
spk_0 Oh, a bunch of friends.
spk_0 And we go through like one of these scenes.
spk_0 It was like, I don't know, an insane asylum, let's say.
spk_0 And a bunch of people in scary mass and makeup,
spk_0 jump onto our hay ride.
spk_0 Everyone's screaming.
spk_0 And one of the people gets in my face and goes, hello, Casey.
spk_0 And then jumps off the haunted hay ride and runs into the woods.
spk_0 And I was like, did anybody else fucking hear that?
spk_0 Did anybody else hear that?
spk_0 Did anybody else get their name called out by one of the inmates?
spk_0 And everyone was like, no, I was like, that person just said my name.
spk_0 They said, hello, Casey.
spk_0 And it freaked me out.
spk_0 Was it your friend?
spk_0 Who was it?
spk_0 Flash forward.
spk_0 I find that it was a friend of mine.
spk_0 I had no idea that they were working the haunted hay ride though.
spk_0 I had no idea because I really honestly was like, I have zero idea who that was.
spk_0 And also, it scared me because it would have had to have taken.
spk_0 My friend did not know I was there.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 So they must have seen me and in that instant made the decision to do that.
spk_0 But wow, that's really get me.
spk_0 Oh, I would be goddamn terrified.
spk_0 But it's also good that you didn't know that your friends was working at the haunted house
spk_0 because I used to have friends who worked at, so in Atlanta for many years,
spk_0 there was a haunted house called the Atlanta zombie apocalypse.
spk_0 Nice.
spk_0 Because Atlanta is of course, because it's the home of the walking dead.
spk_0 Zombie crazy.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 And they were zombie crazy for a very long time.
spk_0 And they basically took this dilapidated motel and made it into like a post-apocalyptic
spk_0 zombie fallout shelter.
spk_0 It was actually terrifying.
spk_0 It felt unsafe.
spk_0 I'm not gonna lie.
spk_0 I felt unsafe.
spk_0 Not up to code.
spk_0 No, I mean, there was definitely trip, trip hazards all over the place.
spk_0 And like actual broken glass, which I was kind of like, okay, that's kind of fucked up.
spk_0 Yeah, we knew like half the people that worked there and when you would go to the haunted house,
spk_0 it's like, oh, here's your friend who is pretending to be like some call of duty,
spk_0 like ops guy, like guiding you through the zombie apocalypse.
spk_0 And we would all just scream his name.
spk_0 And he was trying to stay in character.
spk_0 And we would just be fucking with him the entire time.
spk_0 Oh, so you were ruining it for them, not the other.
spk_0 I thought that was what the story was there.
spk_0 We're going to be like going too far.
spk_0 But no, you were, you were the real monster in the...
spk_0 Oh, Chris, there's people behind us being like,
spk_0 how the fuck do these people know the super soldier that we're traveling with?
spk_0 I'm like, yeah, that sucks.
spk_0 That's so funny.
spk_0 Anyways, we got a big, this was just sort of an intro to the Halloween season with our first
spk_0 episode. We're doing all horror movies this month.
spk_0 We're excited.
spk_0 And we're starting this week off with
spk_0 Mid-Somer from 2019.
spk_0 And we're going to talk about a 24 movies, which I believe
spk_0 Millie and I have some opinions on.
spk_0 Yes, we are the first people in cinematic criticism history
spk_0 to discuss a 24 to discuss elevated horror, the concept of elevated horror.
spk_0 We're the only people that have done it.
spk_0 It's been untouched.
spk_0 Unconsonantly untapped.
spk_0 And ready for vibrant new discussions.
spk_0 But to be completely honest with you, this is the first time watch for me.
spk_0 So I am allowed to have opinions because I've never seen this shit before.
spk_0 I'm not allowed to have opinions because I have seen it before.
spk_0 You are. You're allowed to have opinions.
spk_0 Come on. This is our podcast.
spk_0 But that'll be exciting to discuss.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 I'm excited to talk to you about, because I feel like this was a big
spk_0 movie when it came out.
spk_0 And it'll be fun to talk to you about it.
spk_0 All these, you know, six years after it came out.
spk_0 And I mean, I know we don't look it.
spk_0 Of course, because we're extremely good looking and cool.
spk_0 But we're kind of horror nerds, wouldn't you say?
spk_0 I know it is shocking for people when they find out that I watch horror movies every
spk_0 night of October because I'm so hot and cool.
spk_0 And so.
spk_0 Well, on that note, you're listening to the Spooky As Podcast.
spk_0 Dear movies, I love you.
spk_0 I started trying to get pregnant about four years ago now.
spk_0 We're getting a little bit older and it just kind of felt like the window could be closing.
spk_0 Bloomberg and I Heart Podcasts present.
spk_0 IVF disrupted the Kindbody story.
spk_0 A podcast about a company that promised to revolutionize fertility care.
spk_0 Introducing Kindbody.
spk_0 A new generation of women's health and fertility care.
spk_0 Backed by millions in venture capital and private equity,
spk_0 it grew like a tech startup.
spk_0 While Kindbody did help women start families,
spk_0 it also left behind a stream of disillusioned and angry patients.
spk_0 You think you're finally like with the right people in the right hands.
spk_0 And then to find out again that you're just not.
spk_0 Don't be fooled.
spk_0 By what all the bright and shiny.
spk_0 Listen to IVF disrupted the Kindbody story.
spk_0 Starting September 19 on the I Heart Radio app, Apple podcasts,
spk_0 or wherever you get your podcasts.
spk_0 Power struggles, shady money, drugs, violence, and broken promises.
spk_0 It's a freaking war zone.
spk_0 These people are animal.
spk_0 There's no integrity.
spk_0 There's no loyalty.
spk_0 That's all gone.
spk_0 In the 1980s, modeling wasn't just a dream.
spk_0 It was a battle deal.
spk_0 Book, book, book, like deals.
spk_0 Let's get models in.
spk_0 Let's get them out.
spk_0 And the models themselves,
spk_0 they carried scars that never fully healed.
spk_0 So this day, honestly, if I see a measuring tape, I freak out.
spk_0 The Model Wars podcast peels back the glossy cover
spk_0 and reveals a high-stakes game
spk_0 where survival meant more than beauty.
spk_0 Hosted by me, Vanessa Riores,
spk_0 this is the untold story of an industry built on ruthless ambition.
spk_0 Listen to Model Wars on the I Heart Radio app,
spk_0 Apple podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
spk_0 Short on time, but big on true crime.
spk_0 On a recent episode of the podcast, hunting for answers,
spk_0 I highlighted the story of 19-year-old Lache Dunjee.
spk_0 But she never knocked on that door.
spk_0 She never made it inside.
spk_0 And that text message would be the last time anyone would ever hear from her.
spk_0 To hear this and more true crime stories,
spk_0 open your free I Heart Radio app, search hunting for answers, and listen now.
spk_0 Hey, everybody!
spk_0 You are listening to Dear Movies I Love You.
spk_0 This is a podcast for those who are in a relationship with movies.
spk_0 My name is Millie DeCherico.
spk_0 My name is Casey O'Brien.
spk_0 I was just trying to think of a spooky,
spk_0 you know how they do it in the Simpsons credits for a treehouse of horror.
spk_0 Do you have a spooky version of your name?
spk_0 Chili DeCherico.
spk_0 Chili DeCherico.
spk_0 And mine is...
spk_0 Casey O'Brien.
spk_0 That's good.
spk_0 Now we have to say for the next three episodes.
spk_0 Casey O'Brien's.
spk_0 I think it'll be brains.
spk_0 Okay, good.
spk_0 We've heard it out.
spk_0 Yes.
spk_0 Oh my God.
spk_0 Halloween season.
spk_0 My favorite time of year.
spk_0 This is great.
spk_0 I'm so thrilled.
spk_0 I am too.
spk_0 And we have quite an episode because we're going to try to tackle again,
spk_0 like we said in the intro.
spk_0 This like huge topic,
spk_0 which is basically elevated horror and the movie studio 824's
spk_0 influence and maybe creating that term.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 But you know also talking about...
spk_0 I don't know.
spk_0 I feel like it's a controversial term even.
spk_0 I think it is too.
spk_0 Oh no, I agree with you.
spk_0 I don't think people even like that label.
spk_0 Right.
spk_0 Because it's...
spk_0 It's pejorative of something else, right?
spk_0 Which I'm sure we're going to talk about.
spk_0 Yes.
spk_0 But also talking about a movie like midsummer,
spk_0 which became this kind of like breakout hit for them when she say it was a huge, huge movie.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 I mean, he had hereditary a few years before that and that was big.
spk_0 But then I just feel like midsummer sort of cemented something.
spk_0 It kind of created a pattern with which we understood sort of what 824 was as a
spk_0 company or like as a brand, you know.
spk_0 And I also think it popularized this sort of microgenre that we're going to also talk about
spk_0 which is folk horror.
spk_0 Hell yeah.
spk_0 And there have been folk horror movies prior to midsummer of course.
spk_0 But I think it kind of brought it to this, um, I don't know man.
spk_0 I want to say TikTok level consciousness.
spk_0 Like where are the kids?
spk_0 We're like, I love folk horror.
spk_0 I love witches.
spk_0 I love hayrides.
spk_0 I love...
spk_0 Yeah, yeah, yeah.
spk_0 But before we get there, we got to open up the film diary.
spk_0 The film, about 40,000 viewers.
spk_0 Where we are going to talk about the movies we both watched this last week.
spk_0 And I guess full disclosure, we're not recording this in October.
spk_0 So I haven't started my movie watching, my horror movie watching marathon yet.
spk_0 So why are you telling them how the sausage is made?
spk_0 Well, they're going to be like, didn't you say you watched horror movies all this month?
spk_0 And the movies you are saying you watched are like not horror movies, you know?
spk_0 Okay, fine.
spk_0 But we're not doing it super.
spk_0 No, this is right.
spk_0 We're on the cusp of October right now.
spk_0 Well, go ahead and say yours then.
spk_0 Okay, sorry if I ruined the magic of the show.
spk_0 I literally don't care who goes first or last.
spk_0 Does that matter to people?
spk_0 It doesn't matter to me.
spk_0 No, it doesn't matter to me either.
spk_0 I'll go first.
spk_0 If it does, you can weigh in at deer movies.
spk_0 That exactly right.
spk_0 I mean, you don't comment.
spk_0 I'll just tell you that's dumb.
spk_0 Dumb with a response.
spk_0 Dumb.
spk_0 Next.
spk_0 Okay, I watched two movies this week.
spk_0 One is okay.
spk_0 So there's a Polish director.
spk_0 His name is Christoph Kizlowski.
spk_0 And he is, I mean, a real
spk_0 art house director in the Hall of Fame, you know, I would say.
spk_0 He's done movies like the color blue,
spk_0 the color red, the color white.
spk_0 He did the movie The Double Life of ViroNique.
spk_0 And he also did this 10 movie set
spk_0 called The Decolog, which is sort of based on the 10 Commandments.
spk_0 And these were on television, but they are movies.
spk_0 They're an hour long each.
spk_0 They are, they are feature films.
spk_0 I consider them feature films.
spk_0 Have you seen these, Milly?
spk_0 No, but I've programmed them for a thing we did on film
spk_0 struck, which doesn't exist anymore.
spk_0 But you would consider them each a move.
spk_0 Like they're not short films, but they are movies.
spk_0 Yeah, yeah, I would say that.
spk_0 So I watched, I have the blue array box
spk_0 set from criterion.
spk_0 And I've watched a bunch of them, but I haven't watched all of them.
spk_0 So I started back on this.
spk_0 And they're really beautiful.
spk_0 They're really moving.
spk_0 They're emotional.
spk_0 They're spiritual.
spk_0 And he's an amazing director.
spk_0 And I think a real artist and poet.
spk_0 And if you like really kind of beautiful emotional
spk_0 movies, he's a great filmmaker.
spk_0 I don't know.
spk_0 Anyways, I watched The Decolog one.
spk_0 And wept.
spk_0 And it was great.
spk_0 So then I watched, there's this director.
spk_0 I'm giving, maybe I'm giving too much insight into these filmmakers,
spk_0 but they're both sort of special filmmakers to me.
spk_0 There's this filmmaker called named Jill Sprecker,
spk_0 who did this movie in the 90s called Clock Watchers,
spk_0 which is all about these women who worked in an office.
spk_0 And it's like a boring office.
spk_0 It's great.
spk_0 Yes.
spk_0 It's a great movie.
spk_0 Came out in 1997.
spk_0 It has Lisa Kudrow, Tony Collette, Parker Posey,
spk_0 and Alana Uback.
spk_0 I mean, that is like powerhouse all-star mount rush more.
spk_0 Love it's a great movie about the boredom of working in an office.
spk_0 And it's very like,
spk_0 timely because I feel like people don't work in offices in the same way.
spk_0 They're office culture as we know it is not what it once was in the 90s.
spk_0 So it's great.
spk_0 But this is her, I watched her follow-up movie,
spk_0 which is called 13 Conversations About One Thing from 2001.
spk_0 And I thought it was great.
spk_0 It's very kind of philosophical.
spk_0 It's a very good New York movie,
spk_0 but it's sort of these intertwining lives
spk_0 and these people who are all looking for happiness
spk_0 and something they have found it.
spk_0 Some lose it.
spk_0 Some think it's impossible to get in their lives.
spk_0 But it's a really smart moving movie.
spk_0 It's got Matthew McConaughey.
spk_0 It's got John Tuturo, Cleodewvall.
spk_0 I thought it was great.
spk_0 And nobody has seen this movie, but it was really good.
spk_0 And I wish Jill Specker was able to make more movies,
spk_0 but she hasn't really been able to.
spk_0
spk_0 Yeah, I need to watch this.
spk_0 I've heard about it.
spk_0 I'm good.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 I was stunned.
spk_0 I was like, I'm surprised more people
spk_0 that aren't talking about this movie,
spk_0 because it's really good.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 Well, I'll definitely check it out.
spk_0 I have a lot of your picks actually
spk_0 have made it onto my watch list, obviously.
spk_0 But then it was funny because the other day,
spk_0 I was like, oh, I need to watch EFIS,
spk_0 because I swear to God,
spk_0 we've talked about EFIS about 7,000 times.
spk_0 And I just recently found out that one of my,
spk_0 well, actually, Toya Murray,
spk_0 who co-wrote the TCM Underground book with me,
spk_0 who now lives in LA.
spk_0 She and I hung out the other night.
spk_0 And she mentioned that her, whatever neighbors
spk_0 is the guy that directed EFIS.
spk_0 That is bizarre.
spk_0 I feel like it was sort of odd how we had so many guests.
spk_0 And that was like not intentional at all.
spk_0 We had so many guests who had a very close connection
spk_0 to that movie on our show.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 So you got to watch it.
spk_0 Yeah, it's crazy.
spk_0 So I didn't watch it this week.
spk_0 Although I have it,
spk_0 like I was literally like teeing it up on my prime video
spk_0 or wherever I was going to run it from.
spk_0 But then I was drawn to another section
spk_0 of the Amazon Prime Video,
spk_0 which was offering
spk_0 Paul Thomas Anderson's 2012 film, The Master for Free.
spk_0 Oh.
spk_0 To watch.
spk_0 And I just had to.
spk_0 I had to.
spk_0 How do you see this before?
spk_0 Of course I have.
spk_0 I've seen it.
spk_0 I saw it like twice, I think, when it came out.
spk_0 But I had not seen it since it came out.
spk_0 Well, I saw it in theaters too.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 And because
spk_0 in about two days, I'm about to be watching his new film,
spk_0 the new Paul Thomas Anderson film is called.
spk_0 One battle after another.
spk_0 That's right.
spk_0 They're playing at 70 millimeter here,
spk_0 which I think is actually pretty exciting.
spk_0 Pretty exciting for Atlanta.
spk_0 The reviews are getting me stoked.
spk_0 I haven't read a damn thing about it.
spk_0 So I'm just be positive reviews.
spk_0 Well, good.
spk_0 Good.
spk_0 So I was like, well, fuck if I,
spk_0 if I'm going to watch this one, this new one,
spk_0 maybe I should go back and watch some of the ones that I haven't come around.
spk_0 Because I mean, obviously stuff like Phantom Thread,
spk_0 I've seen like 27 times.
spk_0 But then for some reason, I hadn't seen the Master in a while.
spk_0 And damn, it's a great film still.
spk_0 It's a great film.
spk_0 And the one thing that I will say about seeing it now
spk_0 is that back in 2012 when I saw it,
spk_0 I think my,
spk_0 you know, part of like the subject material of the film
spk_0 that I was really
spk_0 amped on is the whole Scientology thing.
spk_0 Because as you know, like,
spk_0 this movie was sort of inspired, I mean, he says it's not like a 100% inspired by, but it is,
spk_0 um, you know, features a character that's very close to Elron Hubbard, you know,
spk_0 when it talks about his early career and his, you know, kind of ramp up to create,
spk_0 you know, creating what would eventually become Scientology.
spk_0 And I remember back in 2012, that wasn't huge iceberg.
spk_0 That was like a something you just like did not want to talk about.
spk_0 Because you were just afraid to talk about.
spk_0 I feel like people weren't talking about it in the way that they do now.
spk_0 Or like it was still, it was sort of sort of verboten to speak up, to be critical or speak of it
spk_0 in that way.
spk_0 I think in 2012, we were like, I think that the whole concept of it and the whole mystique of it
spk_0 was still able to thrive because people weren't like doing the research that they do on things
spk_0 like that now, right?
spk_0 Like now it's like, because so much time has passed between like that whole era where they
spk_0 were thriving and it was like this really secret and mysterious world that it's just like now,
spk_0 you know, there's like TikTok videos about everything under the sun that has like Amishur
spk_0 Slooth's and other like fact finders kind of dismantling everything.
spk_0 So it's like, there's no way that that mystique could have thrived.
spk_0 Yeah, over a certain period of time.
spk_0 But back in 2012, I think it was still going pretty strong.
spk_0 It seemed like they were getting a lot of young people still into Scientology back then too.
spk_0 And I don't know if that's the, I have no research on this whatsoever, but it just seems like
spk_0 no one would willingly join now.
spk_0 I don't know.
spk_0 Anyway, that's it.
spk_0 The Master.
spk_0 All right.
spk_0 Let's close it up.
spk_0 Let's go.
spk_0 I started trying to get pregnant about four years ago now.
spk_0 We're getting a little bit older and it just kind of felt like the window could be closing.
spk_0 Bloomberg and I hard podcast present.
spk_0 IVF disrupted the kind body story.
spk_0 A podcast about a company that promised to revolutionize fertility care.
spk_0 Introducing kind body.
spk_0 A new generation of women's health and fertility care.
spk_0 Backed by millions in venture capital and private equity, it grew like a tech startup.
spk_0 While kind body did help women start families, it also left behind a stream of disillusioned.
spk_0 In angry patients.
spk_0 You think you're finally like with the right people in the right hands and then to find out again
spk_0 that you're just not.
spk_0 Don't be fooled by what all the bright and shiny.
spk_0 Listen to IVF disrupted the kind body story starting September 19 on the iHeartRadio app Apple
spk_0 podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts.
spk_0 Power struggles, shady money, drugs, violence and broken promises.
spk_0 It's a freaking war zone.
spk_0 These people are animal.
spk_0 There's no integrity.
spk_0 There's no loyalty.
spk_0 That's all gone.
spk_0 In the 1980s, modeling wasn't just a dream.
spk_0 It was a battle deal.
spk_0 Fuck, fuck, fuck.
spk_0 Like deals.
spk_0 Let's get models and let's get them out.
spk_0 And the models themselves.
spk_0 They carried scars that never fully healed.
spk_0 So this day, honestly, if I see a measuring tape, I freak out.
spk_0 The model wars podcast peels back the glossy cover and reveals a high-stakes game
spk_0 where survival meant more than beauty.
spk_0 Hosted by me, Vanessa Grigoriatus, this is the untold story of an industry built
spk_0 on ruthless ambition.
spk_0 Listen to model wars on the iHeartRadio app,
spk_0 Apple podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts.
spk_0 It was an unimaginable crime.
spk_0 It's a four consecutive live terms for Brian Coburger who killed the four University of Idaho students.
spk_0 Nearly 30 months of silence.
spk_0 Until...
spk_0 Bob Scheldt development, Brian Coburger has agreed to plead guilty.
spk_0 No trial, no testimony.
spk_0 The defense are on a sinking ship.
spk_0 This isn't the justice you wanted, but this is justice.
spk_0 Listen to season three of the Idaho Masker on the iHeartRadio app,
spk_0 Apple podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts.
spk_0 All right, moving on to our main discussion.
spk_0 A24 and mid-summer from 2019.
spk_0 Now, Millie, when you think of an A24 horror movie,
spk_0 or maybe I'll just say A24 movie in general,
spk_0 what comes to mind for you?
spk_0 Let me throw out some adjectives.
spk_0 Maybe that's the best way to do it.
spk_0 Hip, urban city, city folk, young, contemporary modern, chic,
spk_0 candles, limited edition merch,
spk_0 Coltie,
spk_0 zeitgeistie.
spk_0 I think that's it.
spk_0 I think I would throw in like, polished.
spk_0 They're very kind of beautifully composed,
spk_0 and they're sort of an elegance to them.
spk_0 Muted colors sometimes.
spk_0 The directors that are making movies with them feel a little
spk_0 artsy, which is a yes, it's an artsy or horror movie,
spk_0 because and they didn't invent this.
spk_0 But I think they popularized a certain type of horror movie that is less schlocky
spk_0 and more intentional, I guess you could say.
spk_0 But A24 is responsible for what you referred to in the beginning of the episode as elevated horror.
spk_0 Right.
spk_0 But I also think that like, I think across the board,
spk_0 even in their non-horror films,
spk_0 they work with directors who are a little cool and hip,
spk_0 they're not making Adam Sandler movies.
spk_0 They're making movies by the Sadie Brothers and Barry Jenkins and Greta Gerwig.
spk_0 And a lot of times, these are directors that some of them are foreign,
spk_0 like Claire Dnieier, Gaspard O'Aher, or whatever.
spk_0 But it's more of a curatorial eye.
spk_0 I think that's one of the, is they're not just like putting out movies to make money,
spk_0 they're really trying to create a vibe.
spk_0 Yes.
spk_0 And I feel like when you extend that to the ways in which they decide to produce horror films,
spk_0 yeah, I think it does create a specific type of horror that now people are calling elevated horror,
spk_0 which again, we said this earlier, feels pejorative, feels like it means other horror is
spk_0 dumb, really.
spk_0 Yeah, yes.
spk_0 But I think it's because I think that they're horror films, and I won't say every single one of them.
spk_0 But a lot of them don't rely on old school horror methods of like the jump scares or the slasheres,
spk_0 or the monster films.
spk_0 They're almost more atmospheric.
spk_0 Yes.
spk_0 Yes, very atmospheric.
spk_0 Like more creepy and not
spk_0 schlocky, like you said.
spk_0 I think with a lot of horror, there's a really big tradition of horror being maligned.
spk_0 Yes.
spk_0 And because of that, they were made cheaply and were rough around the edges for many, many years.
spk_0 I mean, certainly they were well made looking horror films made by major studios over the years,
spk_0 you know, like Hitchcock films.
spk_0 And, you know, even I would argue that some of the universal horror movies of the 30s and some
spk_0 like RKO, Valout movies look really good.
spk_0 Even though technically these movies are cheap movies, right?
spk_0
spk_0 But it's like for the most part, you know, horror was this maligned genre that
spk_0 they weren't going to spend a lot of money on it, and they just wanted to put them in drive-ins
spk_0 and just like have kids show up, and they were putting too much time out there.
spk_0 And that was it.
spk_0 And then I think that as the decades were on with like 70s horror, and especially 80s horror,
spk_0 yeah, you still have this genre that's appreciated a lot by young people.
spk_0 And so, you know, a major studio is just trying to like make the money,
spk_0 going to pump out 12 sequels, create a little universe, and it doesn't matter if they're
spk_0 beautiful or textured or whatever.
spk_0 It's just, Freddie Krueger is going to come kill a bunch of teenagers, and that's what has to
spk_0 happen. So I think you've got the decades of this stuff, especially like in the 2000s,
spk_0 when you had things like saw, or like, you know, these franchise movies that are just extremely
spk_0 violent, but also like ridiculous.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 A lot of times still hostile in these concepts, right?
spk_0 I think that that is what influenced this concept of quote, unquote, elevated horror,
spk_0 because it's basically being like, oh, we're going to make like thoughtful
spk_0 art films, but make them kind of scary.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 Okay.
spk_0 Synopsis time.
spk_0 Danny, played by Florence Pugh, is an American college student who both experiences a truly
spk_0 horrific tragedy, a horrific family tragedy. And also at that same time,
spk_0 isn't a very shitty relationship with her shitty boyfriend, Christian, played by Jack Rainer.
spk_0 Now, as a result of this tragedy, Christian feels bad for her. So he invites her along on his
spk_0 boys trip. The boys are not happy about this at all, but the trip is to Sweden.
spk_0 And specifically, it's to this ancestral commune called the Harga.
spk_0 And this trip is sort of led and prompted by their friend from college Pelle, played by Wilhelm Brombe
spk_0 and he grew up in this commune. So they are going to go celebrate and be a part of their mid-summer
spk_0 celebration. At first, the American visitors think this will be more of kind of a like
spk_0 October fest party situation with hot Swedish babes.
spk_0 But soon, they learned that some of these traditions are a little more ancient and a little
spk_0 more barbaric than they were expecting mid-summer.
spk_0 Very good. Thank you.
spk_0 That covered it.
spk_0 That covered it. Well, why don't you tell me, I'm curious, you saw this when it came out.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 You obviously thought it was a horror movie. What wasn't about it that you were scared of?
spk_0 Well, you just don't know, you think you know the intentions of these people, these Swedes.
spk_0 Slowly, you're kind of like, huh, what's going on here? This is like different and a little more
spk_0 intense than maybe I thought. And I feel like just the slow revelation of the true nature of
spk_0 this celebration I found frightening because you don't know how far it's going to go.
spk_0 Right. Well, and also too, and this was something that I had heard about throughout the years.
spk_0 I almost became like a meme in a weird way is the horror, I guess, if you will, of a relationship
spk_0 where the boyfriend is sort of an unreliable narrator.
spk_0 Do you know what I mean?
spk_0 Because like you said in the synopsis, I mean, basically, like Florence Pugh's character,
spk_0 Danny, right? It's experiencing this insane family tragedy, right?
spk_0 Her entire family is basically murdered.
spk_0 Yes. Her bipolar sister murders her entire family by carbon monoxide poisoning,
spk_0 by putting a hose from the car into their house. And it's horrifying. I mean,
spk_0 the level of tragedy that you're not used to a character experiencing like such a high level
spk_0 tragedy so quickly in a movie like this. I felt like it was shocking to me.
spk_0 Right. And I felt like her character is being set up in a way. And this is just purely from
spk_0 a narrative perspective to be questioning whether or not her feelings are real, right? Because it's like,
spk_0 at the very beginning, it's established she's in this relationship with her boyfriend,
spk_0 Christian. Yes. And he like wants to break up with her. Like he's basically like, oh,
spk_0 she's such a drag. Oh, she's just a mess. And that is like a common, I don't know, actually,
spk_0 I don't want to say that because then I'm just hating men. No, do it, Millie.
spk_0 Well, this is a good comment. I feel like I like this commentary about men in this movie because
spk_0 it really makes these guys look like shit heads. Right. Which I have to say is true. Like,
spk_0 this is I think the point I was trying to make is that and I stopped myself because I was like,
spk_0 I don't know. Like I say, I drag you men all the time. All the time. But it's also that feeling of
spk_0 you know, a man basically being like, my girlfriend is fucking crazy. And I got to break up with
spk_0 her. But I can't break up with her because she's too fragile and fucked up and she'll kill herself
spk_0 if I'm not in her life. You know, it's like, that's the setup. And all this, all this bros are like,
spk_0 dude, your girlfriend cut weight. She sucks. Like, you know, and it almost felt like,
spk_0 because prior to the actual reveal of the murder suicide thing,
spk_0 they were painting her as this meaty person. Like they were, you know, her sister was missing.
spk_0 You know, they were like, God, your girlfriend calls too much. And then, you know, she's popping
spk_0 out of an in the next scene. And you're like, okay, well, you know, she's being set up as this,
spk_0 as this meaty, crazy woman character. And then she has this horrible tragedy. And then the vibe
spk_0 instantly turns to, well, the boyfriend now he has to stay because what is it going to do?
spk_0 Break up with his girlfriend who just experienced this like, family annihilation scenario.
spk_0 There's a curb your enthusiasm episode that's sort of like this. Like, there's a guy who's
spk_0 going to break up with his girlfriend. But her beloved aunt, I think dies. And he's confiding
spk_0 in Larry. He's like, it's going to break up with her. How long do I have to wait
spk_0 after this tragedy to dissipate, to break up with her? And I feel like the boyfriend is doing
spk_0 those calculations in his head. He's like, okay, yes, horrible tragedy. But how long do I
spk_0 got to stay where I don't look like a shithead asshole, but can still break up with her? So,
spk_0 well, and it's the whole reason why they, I guess, allow her to go on this boy's trip because
spk_0 they're all like, oh, God, we feel bad. Like, you know, he's in a bind and a letter come.
spk_0 I would walk that back a few steps and be like, why would I want to go with these fucking
spk_0 shuckleheads? But I was going through the most horrific time of my life in the way that her
spk_0 character does. Do you think I want to be with his bros in any capacity? No. Yes, I know, but
spk_0 she's a, she's in college. She's a child. And she, I feel like she like really likes her boyfriend.
spk_0 And or it's like, she's, it doesn't maybe doesn't like him, but she's in that horrible thing
spk_0 where I've been in this, a lot of people have been in this where they're like, I feel like this
spk_0 person doesn't like me. And I'm doing everything in my power to appease them or to be as near them
spk_0 as possible so that they will like me more. Right. It's a, it's a codependency. And when you're a
spk_0 young person, that is all relationships already or is like this codependent like need to be loved
spk_0 by someone, even if that person is a terrible person, it is not right for you, right? Again.
spk_0 And of course, if she didn't feel that way, we wouldn't have a fucking movie. So I can,
spk_0 but I'm just saying personally, after my years of wisdom and life experience,
spk_0 the last place that I would be is in Sweden with a bunch of dudes.
spk_0 100%. I mean, it sounds like a night, it sounds like a nightmare. And here's what makes it a
spk_0 nightmare from jump to where I'd be like, I made the wrong choice. I need to just go home. Okay.
spk_0 They enter, they basically get on this flight, fly to Sweden, then get into a car and drive to
spk_0 the country where Pele, right, who is their Swedish friend, is taking them to his like little
spk_0 community of happy sprites and creatures, right? His little, little, little commune. Yes.
spk_0 I'm sitting there after a long ass flight and then a long ass car ride in the same clothes that I
spk_0 probably put on 14 hours before. Get out of the car. We haven't even pulled into the main part
spk_0 of the thing yet. We're just like on the outskirts. And there's all these people tripping in a field,
spk_0 like being hippie-dippy, like psychedelic, fucking hippies in the field, right? And they get out
spk_0 of the car and they're pretty much instantly offered mushrooms. Okay. And these are all their
spk_0 fuckers want to do mushrooms immediately after getting off of a fucking plane and a car ride.
spk_0 And I'm like, turn around and go home, girl. You don't want to do mushrooms right now. You
spk_0 don't even know where you are. And she even says it. She even says like, hey, I think I want to get
spk_0 like my bearings first before we trip for the next 12 hours. And then of course one of their
spk_0 friends who is the worst friend, Mark. Absolutely. A terrible person with a terrible face.
spk_0 Played by Will Paltier. Yeah. He looks like the asshole of the friend group. Like his,
spk_0 sorry, Will, you have that face for it. I'm sure you're a lovely human being, but you were,
spk_0 you are perfectly cast for this role. He's like, well, if you don't trip, then we're all going
spk_0 to be tripping at different times. That doesn't work. We're going to be off schedule. I'm like,
spk_0 in what context is that even matter, dude? Like we're in the middle of nowhere. Who cares?
spk_0 And then the boyfriend is like, oh, well, I'm not going to do mushrooms either. It's fine. No,
spk_0 it's fine. It's fine. You know, one of those situations, but it's not fine. You know,
spk_0 listen, I have never been into this. And I don't care if I was 18 or 48, whatever.
spk_0 People who like get pissed at you for not like drinking or doing drugs at their level.
spk_0 Yeah. Is one of the most annoying things in the world. And I have so many friends that try to
spk_0 pull that shit on me. And I'm like, get a grip. Yeah. Okay. Like, why do I have to be as drunk as you?
spk_0 Why do I even have to be drunk at all? Like, don't force me to be tripping with you when I don't
spk_0 want to be tripping. Okay. Like, have the confidence to trip on your own. And don't worry about
spk_0 what other people do. Like, give me a break. But I guess these people are in their 20s and they care.
spk_0 Yeah. But it just annoyed me because then she capitulated to it. Like basically she was like,
spk_0 well, I guess I'll be tripping then because everybody's making me feel bad about it.
spk_0 Yeah. And that is where I would be like, hell, no, I'm going back. Like, this is not like.
spk_0 I was going to ask you at what point would you turn around and get out of there? And it sounds like
spk_0 pretty immediately. Oh, I wouldn't even made it to the fucking gate to the commune. And I'd be like,
spk_0 oh, word, these like stupid idiot dudes that are friends with my boyfriend are like making me feel bad
spk_0 for not wanting to do mushrooms after a 50 hour flight. I guess I'm going back to the city and
spk_0 going to hotel. Yeah. Because this is obviously their bro hang. Yeah. And I don't want to be a part of
spk_0 it. Well, she should, yeah, she should have seen that beforehand. But you know, I think
spk_0 this is the question if it's asked of me, when would I have left? Yes.
spk_0 Now, if I was a 22 year old, I think her character is like 21 or 22 in this movie. I feel like
spk_0 I would be doomed to death, honestly. I would never have left because I would, I feel like
spk_0 I could totally see myself as a young person being like, well, this is their culture and you know,
spk_0 human sacrifices are kind of a part of it. I guess I can accept that. Like it would have, I
spk_0 would have, I feel like I would have been killed in this situation, frankly. Yeah. Also, not going to lie.
spk_0 My, my investment in what is happening in this community is in direct proportion to
spk_0 how interested I am in this culture. Like, I hate it. I hate that I thought this, but
spk_0 I'm sure I'm not the only person that thought this. And this is such a bone headed observation. But
spk_0 it was giving very IKEA to me this entire film. Like even the words, the names, but just like the vibe of it,
spk_0 the vibe of like beautiful Swedish people in all white linens with flower crowns. I was just kind of like
spk_0 not really caring about this vibe. Interesting. Well,
spk_0 I'm an eighth Swedish. I'm 12.5% Swedish. So I think I maybe have a little bit more investment in
spk_0 the Swedish culture than others do. Yeah. I was, I was intrigued. Well, I'm a south side girl,
spk_0 meaning all my family, my ancestors come from the water. I'm not like, I've never been one to be
spk_0 fascinated by like, Viking cultures and things of this nature. Does that make sense? Yes, it does.
spk_0 So, so they, you know, they enter the camp. They're tripping balls. They enter the camp and it's
spk_0 beautiful. And it seems like a fun summer camp. And I guess the first indication that things are
spk_0 going wrong are the sacrifice of the two elders in the community that turned 74 because they kill people,
spk_0 they kill old people that have turned 74, right? That's the whole thing. Yes, yes. And honestly,
spk_0 most of them, including Florence Pue, it seemed like they're kind of okay with staying after that
spk_0 point. There are two friends that are like, we're out of here. But most of them are like,
spk_0 oh, we'll stay. It's fine. That that happened. Yeah. I mean, again, I would have left way earlier.
spk_0 So this is probably moot. But I mean, even when they roll up to the camp, they're just like
spk_0 meeting people. They're taking in all the sites, all the white linens, the flower crowds, the
spk_0 triangle shaped creepy buildings, which I feel like is a fucking raster thing. I don't know if
spk_0 you thought that did he have a triangle shaped building in hereditary? There was some kind of like
spk_0 tree housey like slanted roof. Maybe that's it slanted roof. Yeah. But looking around,
spk_0 everything is real stark, very, very scandy. It was like very scandy, which I think is why I
spk_0 thought about IKEA. I was like, oh, yeah, this is like beautifully designed. Like most communes
spk_0 are disgusting, by the way, they're filled with like gross hippie shit. And this was this beautiful
spk_0 Scandinavian architecture IKEA paradise. And I was like, okay, they're walking around.
spk_0 They realize she, they quickly realize that they all have to sleep in the same room because
spk_0 they're not of a certain age or something. Like you all have to sleep in the room. All the kids
spk_0 got to sleep in the same room. Yeah. And there are in these like rickety, tiny doll house beds.
spk_0 And I'm like, damn, this is, this looks uncomfortable. And you have to sleep open air with a bunch of
spk_0 kids. Yeah, that would be tough for me. I like to be alone. Even now is a, you know, a man with a
spk_0 family. I like, my office is in my basement and like a little cupboard down here. I like to be
spk_0 removed and away from other people. So I think a commune like this situation would be hard for me.
spk_0 Well, even when I was like, you know, in my 20s and I'd be like backpacking or like traveling
spk_0 on the cheap and sleeping on people's couches, if you told me, oh, you have to sleep in this
spk_0 house with a bunch of babies and kids, I'd be like, fuck no, I'm going to go sleep at the airport.
spk_0 Kids, they stay up all night long and cry. Like no, thank you. Yeah. But, you know, basically,
spk_0 like they're taking it all in. And I'm just like, again, I just would, I wouldn't, I'd be like,
spk_0 all right, I don't know if this is my vibe. This is feeling very not my thing. It's not very cozy.
spk_0 It just feels kind of like stark and creepy. Well, I feel like, you know, like we're talking about
spk_0 horror movies. Or, and we're talking about this movie, it's like, when would you leave?
spk_0 Yes. You know, when would you get out of there to survive? Because a lot of times you watch horror
spk_0 movies and you're like, what are they doing? They're, they're not noticing all these red flags,
spk_0 you know, but do you feel like in general when you're watching a horror movie, you're like,
spk_0 I would not be in that situation. Correct. I would have gotten out of there. Correct.
spk_0 Yes, because I'm like, I'm the, I don't know about this guy's person in every horror movie.
spk_0 I'm not brave. I'm like a complete and utter pussy. I'm like, I don't like it. I don't like the
spk_0 vibe I'm out of here. And it's usually the other people that are trying to force me to stay,
spk_0 that I end up staying a lot of times. But for the most part, I'm like, uh, instantly not a cool vibe
spk_0 amount. I am, I'm a sense highly sensitive person. And I feel like when the vibes are off, I can
spk_0 sense immediately. But I also have in the past been victim to not wanting to make waves. Sure.
spk_0 You know. And so that's why I fear for my life that I will be the headed, you know,
spk_0 whacked against a tree by Jason or something. Right. Because I didn't follow my instinct. Yeah.
spk_0 Well, I'm like, this is, you know, you mentioned the people that jump off the cliffs when they're
spk_0 having someнымиie heaven because another thing is I don't like animals like the boys. But I
spk_0 know someone is having something that I just can't feel like kimchi at counts. They're like,
spk_0 like, you know, anything I want to do. You know, if you're with me or if you're out there looking
spk_0
spk_0 I thought the reasoning was kind of dumb.
spk_0 Okay, this is again, I think what I want to go back to
spk_0 is the idea of my investment in this world
spk_0 is only as strong as the customs that I have to learn
spk_0 that the rules of the world that I have to learn.
spk_0 If I feel that all the rules become stupid
spk_0 and annoying that I'm out.
spk_0 Oh, and you felt the rules got annoying
spk_0 and stupid in this movie?
spk_0 Yes.
spk_0 Sadly to say,
spk_0 I was like, there's a lot of meat on this bone.
spk_0 There's a lot going on, very high concept.
spk_0 A lot of like weird potions and like pubes in your food
spk_0 and people just like simply drinking stuff
spk_0 without questioning it at all.
spk_0 Like just, yeah, I'll take a swing of this thing.
spk_0 It looks like actual piss.
spk_0 And I get that you don't want to be rude
spk_0 in another person's home country or their culture.
spk_0 But I'm also like, I don't know you.
spk_0 I really don't know you.
spk_0 And I don't mind tasting dishes,
spk_0 but like drinking strange liquids,
spk_0 that feels like a poison scenario.
spk_0 I guess so, but you're a guest at there.
spk_0 I guess I wouldn't jump to what is this.
spk_0 I would be like, okay.
spk_0 But they're not even explaining what's in it.
spk_0 They're just being like, oh, it's supposed to make you
spk_0 really nice.
spk_0 Like, oh, cool.
spk_0 So I'm just gonna drink it.
spk_0 What does that even mean?
spk_0 Why don't you tell me like a couple of ingredients?
spk_0 Tell me the, you know, give me a little bit more
spk_0 of an explanation than, oh, you should just drink it.
spk_0 It's, it tastes good.
spk_0 Like here's the thing.
spk_0 When people start disappearing, again,
spk_0 I think you and I would both have been out way, way before this,
spk_0 but then people start disappearing.
spk_0 And this happens in every single movie I've ever seen
spk_0 about a cult or a commune or anything,
spk_0 is that people start disappearing
spk_0 and they don't say bye to their friends.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 And then the other people are like,
spk_0 oh, they left without saying goodbye.
spk_0 Don't worry, they're fine.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 And you're told by an elder or somebody that's in the group,
spk_0 oh, we dropped them up in the airport, they'll be fine.
spk_0 And I'm like, that is a huge, like a red flag,
spk_0 like being flown off the hillside.
spk_0 I mean, you've got to get out.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 You've got to get out.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 But the thing that becomes a more apparent after the scene
spk_0 is that they're bringing these people,
spk_0 primarily Danny and Christian, into the rituals more.
spk_0 And they're basically sending them up
spk_0 to participate in the activities of this group,
spk_0 including the May Queen Fandango.
spk_0 Yes.
spk_0 It becomes less of a celebration and more of a ritual
spk_0 that they didn't realize that they were a part of.
spk_0 Right.
spk_0 That made me that they were hand picked to come
spk_0 and participate.
spk_0 And I guess that's the horror part or the folklore part.
spk_0 That just got, that gave me chills when you just said that.
spk_0 It's scared me.
spk_0 But the May Queen is what the princess of the,
spk_0 yes, like the Miss USA pageant of this commune.
spk_0 And it becomes clear that Danny is becoming part of it.
spk_0 She just immediately jumps in from what I saw.
spk_0 Like she's just like sure, I'll learn the dances.
spk_0 I'll learn Swedish.
spk_0 I'll be making meat pies with y'all in no time.
spk_0 And then all of a sudden, she's crowned the queen.
spk_0 That's where you get the image of what I,
spk_0 what I saw as part of the midsummer mythology
spk_0 when I, before I had ever seen the movie,
spk_0 was seeing Florence Pugh and all the flowers
spk_0 and looking fucking disheveled and sad,
spk_0 covered in beautiful flowers,
spk_0 which I think conceptually is actually pretty tight.
spk_0 Like I'm like, oh, yeah.
spk_0 It is wonderful to see somebody covered in beautiful flowers
spk_0 but looking like they want to die.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 But so she becomes part of this ritual.
spk_0 She becomes the queen and then, as opposed to spoiler alert,
spk_0 she might end up last woman standing, final girl style.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 She might, her beloved, her fuck boy boyfriend
spk_0 who wanted to break up with her, maybe has his own way
spk_0 of transcending to the next realm.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 Which that's just me.
spk_0 And that whole scene, by the way, wow.
spk_0 That was very, like, it felt like I was watching Susperia.
spk_0 The, yeah, there's a lot of me.
spk_0 A bit of Susperia.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 Also about which is what the fuck there?
spk_0 You're, you're right on.
spk_0 I, you know, I think something overall,
spk_0 I appreciate about this movie.
spk_0 It is about tragedy and trauma.
spk_0 And Florence Pue is carrying a lot, Danny,
spk_0 is carrying a lot of trauma in this movie.
spk_0 And it's kind of like a burden upon her
spk_0 that her boyfriend and these bros are in no way
spk_0 attempting to alleviate or help.
spk_0 But she gets to this community,
spk_0 which yes, they're murderous, okay?
spk_0 But I feel like they see her and are willing to
spk_0 and happy to take on and help her,
spk_0 remove her trauma to help her work through it
spk_0 and to even take it out.
spk_0 Like there's that whole scene
spk_0 where the women are screaming, you know,
spk_0 scream crying with her.
spk_0 I liked that.
spk_0 I thought that was moving in a way.
spk_0 And that, I think that's sort of something
spk_0 that I took away from the movie and joined.
spk_0 Well, I'm glad that you thought that actually
spk_0 because I was sitting there thinking,
spk_0 I'm feeling less and less connected to her story
spk_0 as the movie moves on.
spk_0 I think it's because there was just too much going on.
spk_0 Okay.
spk_0 There's too much to learn and know
spk_0 about what these people do and who these people are.
spk_0 And then there's all these other characters interacting
spk_0 with them that I kept thinking,
spk_0 oh, I forgot that she's going through this huge scenario.
spk_0 But now you got me thinking about,
spk_0 why is the black guy doing a dissertation
spk_0 on Swedish culture?
spk_0 Why is this asshole that everyone hates
spk_0 following this woman that he wants to fuck into the woods
spk_0 and he didn't come out?
spk_0 Like, you know, there's all these like different side quests
spk_0 that I was just like, you're distracting me
spk_0 from what I'm here for, which is that.
spk_0 I want this woman to get her revenge in some way.
spk_0 And, you know, it just felt like I was disconnecting
spk_0 slowly from her story, which is unfortunate
spk_0 because I felt like, obviously,
spk_0 that's the most compelling story out of all these people.
spk_0 Uh-huh.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 Yeah, I, the scene with her boyfriend,
spk_0 I felt like, okay, well, that's interesting.
spk_0 Which scene?
spk_0 Where he is.
spk_0 Yes, when he's basically creating a new life with...
spk_0 Yes, he gets wrapped up, he gets kind of, uh,
spk_0 I don't know, poisoned or like drugged to,
spk_0 and he's been chosen to fornicate with a woman
spk_0 to create a baby.
spk_0 And there's a lot of women that are a part of it,
spk_0 including like chanting around this woman
spk_0 as they're drinking in the middle of this big house.
spk_0 And, uh, there's even one, not old lady
spk_0 who comes behind and starts pushing his butt.
spk_0 I thought that was funny.
spk_0 Listen, I between Susperia, the remake, this movie,
spk_0 maybe elevated horror has done something amazing,
spk_0 which is that it's bringing in a lot of old lady boobs.
spk_0 And I love it.
spk_0 A lot of old lady boobs in the witch too.
spk_0 Yes.
spk_0 It's about fucking time.
spk_0 I'm like, I'll think of some more if I can.
spk_0 Like those, let's get some more droopers out,
spk_0 out for these people to see, because it's, it's important.
spk_0 The men need to know that this is what boobs do when you age, okay?
spk_0 It's like, we're not all perky.
spk_0 And, you know, the reality is,
spk_0 is that we carry a lot of wisdom in these saggy tits.
spk_0 It's just the way it is.
spk_0 And maybe...
spk_0 The wisdom is what brings them down to earth.
spk_0 There's a whole, this is so,
spk_0 such a sidebar, but like,
spk_0 this is whole storyline in the valley about saggy boobs
spk_0 after like giving birth.
spk_0 So I've got it on the brain, I suppose.
spk_0 But it's like, you know, at the end of the day,
spk_0 that is something good about elevated horror.
spk_0 Maybe even folk horror is, there is like a naturalism
spk_0 that comes into play with some of these stories
spk_0 that I actually think is pretty tight.
spk_0 And I really appreciate it on that local.
spk_0 But it's like, you know, that was the thing
spk_0 is that he's going through this entire scenario.
spk_0 And I'm just sort of like, all right, what's up with Danny?
spk_0 Let's go, let's find out what she's doing,
spk_0 make me, what does that get you?
spk_0 Does she, is there a parade, you know?
spk_0 Is she gonna be a spokesperson woman for Revlon?
spk_0 Like what happens in these scenarios?
spk_0 Yeah, I guess what do you think her life is like after this?
spk_0 What do you think happens to her?
spk_0 I mean, I think she stays in that commune
spk_0 in this, then getting impregnated by weird American dudes
spk_0 in a ritual, you know, like she just becomes a part of the crew.
spk_0 You don't think she goes back to Colorado?
spk_0 I guess she doesn't have a family to go back to.
spk_0 No, why the fuck would she go back there?
spk_0 If she's the maid queen, that probably gives her
spk_0 a little bit of clout, you know?
spk_0 She doesn't watch Austin Powers on her.
spk_0 Did you like that part?
spk_0 The kids are what?
spk_0 It was Austin Powers, right?
spk_0 I was like, where are y'all even watching Austin Powers?
spk_0 Like this looks like a damn dollhouse.
spk_0 Yeah, I guess they have electricity
spk_0 and I was guessing like a VHS tape for some reason.
spk_0 Again, a lot of questions when it comes to this,
spk_0 like, that made me laugh hard because, you know,
spk_0 we used to have these family reunions
spk_0 at this cabin resort every year.
spk_0 What we still do, but we would stay at this resort
spk_0 and my cousins would bring their VHS TV,
spk_0 you know, the little TVs with the VHS player in it.
spk_0 And one of the movies we would watch was Austin Powers.
spk_0 So I was like very tickled that that was...
spk_0 I listen, I sit down in front of Austin Powers now.
spk_0 Yeah, I know.
spk_0 Anytime it's on, I mean, you know.
spk_0 But... Oh, my goodness.
spk_0 Well, Millie, what else is there to say about mid-summer?
spk_0 Ariaster, A24?
spk_0 I don't know. I wanted to like it more than I did, I think.
spk_0 I think it had a lot of mystique and it was a cure...
spk_0 It was a curiosity since it came out.
spk_0 And I was not... I had not really like read too much about it.
spk_0 I had heard about it.
spk_0 I, you know, obviously had seen the flowers
spk_0 and the Florence puneness of it so many times.
spk_0 But I guess I just didn't really know much about it
spk_0 on that level of what the film could actually be about.
spk_0 I think I was a little like, okay, maybe I just missed the train
spk_0 on this a little bit, which is unfortunate.
spk_0 And I feel like that's the unfortunate thing about watching movies
spk_0 like this much, much later is because you can't help
spk_0 it being formed by just the fallout of big juggernaut movies.
spk_0 That's so interesting.
spk_0 I think you're totally right.
spk_0 I mean, listen, when I watched Titanic
spk_0 within the past year and a half for the first time,
spk_0 actually, in that case, I actually liked it a lot more
spk_0 than I thought I would because I think everybody began
spk_0 to hate that movie in a full way.
spk_0 And then I was like, I actually kind of like it.
spk_0 So I don't know, maybe it's like...
spk_0 I mean, I think about movies like La La Land.
spk_0 When that came out, people were like, I loved this movie.
spk_0 And if you had seen it at the height of people being excited
spk_0 about it, you might think differently about it than watching it.
spk_0 Now, when everyone was like, actually that movie sucks
spk_0 and I hate it, you know, because that had like a big backlash to it.
spk_0 And not that mid-summer had a big backlash,
spk_0 but I think there is something to be said about seeing a movie
spk_0 in the window of time when it is like a big point of conversation
spk_0 or really popping off with the culture, you know what I mean?
spk_0 Well, that's the thing too about...
spk_0 If you go back and you even watch movies that won like Oscars
spk_0 from like five, eight years ago...
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 I want to say that I was reading a letterbox review
spk_0 from like a really good, like reliable letterbox follower
spk_0 that I have that I follow, who has great taste
spk_0 and is always like somebody that I kind of admire.
spk_0 And I think it was...
spk_0 I don't know if it was past lives or it was like some movie
spk_0 that came out that was huge on the kind of indie circuit,
spk_0 slash Oscar circuit, maybe from like five years ago
spk_0 or something like that and they were like shit on it.
spk_0 And I was like, whoa, that's crazy
spk_0 because everybody else had rated it like five stars.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 And then this one person was like,
spk_0 this movie actually fucking sucks.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 And I don't know what's past lives,
spk_0 but it was something like that.
spk_0 And I was thinking about that with the movie Coda.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 You remember the movie Coda?
spk_0 Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
spk_0 It won best picture at the Academy Awards in 2021.
spk_0 And I'm like, I forgot that movie existed.
spk_0 No one ever brings up that movie.
spk_0 I didn't think that movie was particularly good
spk_0 but people really liked that movie.
spk_0 But it has no cultural standing whatsoever.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 Yes.
spk_0 Absolutely.
spk_0 So, yeah.
spk_0 That's interesting.
spk_0 I guess it's like your mileage may vary on this kind of stuff.
spk_0 But I mean, I'm glad I watched it.
spk_0 I'll always be glad to watch a movie
spk_0 that I've never seen before.
spk_0 And I guess I don't know the horror,
spk_0 the elevated horror or the H24 horror thing.
spk_0 I don't know if we were able to see all the deal on that.
spk_0 But it's, you know, it's definitely like an interesting conversation.
spk_0 So.
spk_0 I'm not bummed that you don't like it.
spk_0 I don't care if you don't like a movie or not.
spk_0 But I really love this movie.
spk_0 I'm kind of midsummer-pilled.
spk_0 I think.
spk_0 I know you've seen it quite a bit, huh?
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 I've seen like five times.
spk_0 And I really like this movie.
spk_0 So, it's just interesting.
spk_0 But I did see it in theaters, you know?
spk_0 So.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 And the elevated horror thing, I think it...
spk_0 I don't know if there's much more to discuss,
spk_0 but it is something where there is sort of a line in the...
spk_0 There's like a designation that it's like,
spk_0 this is elevated horror, meaning it's good.
spk_0 And that's regular horror.
spk_0 And that's bad.
spk_0 So.
spk_0 I don't know.
spk_0 It's an interesting time in the development of horror movies.
spk_0 I like movies that are considered elevated horror.
spk_0 And I like movies that are just considered schlocky, stupid horror.
spk_0 But imagine if they like remade, think of like a...
spk_0 A real funny shitty, like 80s or 90s horror movie,
spk_0 then if they remade in the A24 elevated style,
spk_0 would be so funny.
spk_0 Like leprechaun.
spk_0 Leprechaun, I was going to say critters.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 The bookends, they should remake the bookends.
spk_0 Or a child's play.
spk_0 What if they made like an atmospheric...
spk_0 Chuckie movie.
spk_0 You know what I'm going to say about elevated horror?
spk_0 There is a humorlessness to them.
spk_0 Yes.
spk_0 They take themselves very seriously, you know?
spk_0 Listen, if we're grasping at the mere mention of Austin Powers
spk_0 in mid-summer, that means it's not a very funny film.
spk_0 Let's move on to employees' picks.
spk_0 Yes.
spk_0 Millie, what do you got?
spk_0 Well, here's a tea.
spk_0 I am not going to recommend an A24 movie.
spk_0 No.
spk_0 Is that a problem?
spk_0 Is that a problem?
spk_0 No, I was being silly.
spk_0 Okay.
spk_0 I was going to say, you can fire me, I guess, technically if you want.
spk_0 Technically, I could fire you?
spk_0 No, I couldn't.
spk_0 If I wanted to fire you, I don't think I could.
spk_0 I know, but these are employee picks.
spk_0 Maybe you would at least tell the manager like this bitch.
spk_0 Oh, okay.
spk_0 I caught Millie smoking cigarettes in the bathroom.
spk_0 It stinks in there.
spk_0 She's listening to steely Dan in the bathroom, smoking cigarettes.
spk_0 I, but here's the thing, I'm not going to recommend an A24 movie.
spk_0 I'm not going to recommend a horror or elevated horror movie, really.
spk_0 I'm actually going to recommend a documentary, which is essentially about a cult.
spk_0 And it is scary in a different way.
spk_0 It is a terrifying documentary, but it's because it's about true life.
spk_0 But if criminals and scary weirdos from our history, but also just like the way in which it's shot,
spk_0 it's very rough ... very rough run the edges, but it's this documentary called Manson or 1973.
spk_0 and it is a documentary that was essentially made in the time, like right, the few years after the
spk_0 Manson murders, right? And it was directed by Robert Hendrickson and Lawrence Merrick and it's
spk_0 basically like they go to like spawn ranch and they interview like squeaky from me and like, you know,
spk_0 Sandy and they are in the throes of their dedication to Charles Manson and the Manson family
spk_0 that it is like pretty scary and they're wearing like much like mid-summer. They're wearing like
spk_0 animal pelts and stuff for some weird reason and they're carrying guns and they're being
spk_0 interviewed by a documentary team and they're just like so reverent towards the family. It's just
spk_0 feels so like this is not something that's like being made like 20, 30 years after the fact. It's
spk_0 being made like really close. I mean, I don't know if the trial was still technically happening,
spk_0 but it was like all this shit had pretty much just happened and like everybody, you know, Manson's
spk_0 and Jail, all of the people who participated in the crimes are in jail and there was just
spk_0 always like people left that were part of the family and they were just kind of like hanging
spk_0 out on this fucking ranch, like trying to figure out what to do with their lives now that their leader
spk_0 has been, you know, convicted of these crimes and so it was just like felt very
spk_0 very feral and unhinged and terrifying, but it is pretty, it's a pretty raw documentary and like
spk_0 there's actually this part of it that is trippy and I think it's because it's made in 1973. I mean,
spk_0 it's like very psychedelic, but like Bobby Bolcelay is involved and it's this like triptych of like
spk_0 they're kind of like, you know, they were making music and it was this kind of this creepy murder
spk_0 music and it was just kind of like it's very trippy. It feels very of the era. I don't know,
spk_0 you might have to rent it somewhere, let me give a video store. It might be on internet archive.
spk_0 It's really hard to find or it was for a very long time, but I don't know. When I watched mid-summer,
spk_0 I was kind of like, yeah, this is kind of the vibe I'm going for for an employee pick. So
spk_0 very good. It's a good curiosity like to watch if you're especially if you're interested in
spk_0 Manson family, but even if not just a historical artifact. Very good. Well, I was sort of, I'm
spk_0 going to recommend a 24 movie and one that I feel like may have been sort of forgotten to time.
spk_0 This isn't, I would not consider this a horror movie, but it does have horror movie elements to it.
spk_0 It's a movie called Lamb from 2021. It's with Numi Rappachi. It's an ice landic slash Swedish film.
spk_0 It's directed by Vladimir Johansson and Numi Rappachi and her husband experienced a tragedy. Of
spk_0 course, then that's what you got to do in a 24 movies. And one day they discover and they're
spk_0 farmers. And one of their sheep has given birth to a half lamb, half human. And it's sort of
spk_0 disturbing and sweet and scary. And it's set in like the real farm country of Iceland. So they're
spk_0 out in the middle of nowhere. So it's sort of, you know, some similarities to mid-summer in that
spk_0 way. But it is a really creepy movie, beautiful movie. And you should check it out. And it's very
spk_0 a 24 E, you know, it's got that a 24 vibe to it. So interesting. Yeah. Lamb. Lamb. Okay.
spk_0 I saw it at the Alamo Drafthouse in LA with my friend Christian Dwayne Yes. Well, good job.
