spk_0 I love Minecraft.
spk_0 I love the mechanics, I love the world, and I especially love the law that we've been
spk_0 uncovering over the last several years.
spk_0 But, despite everything we've accomplished on this channel,
spk_0 there is still one question that I have been unable to answer.
spk_0 What does suspicious stew taste like?
spk_0 Normally, when you get a stew, you understand what it tastes like based purely on the name.
spk_0 Each stew, chicken stew, even in Minecraft, you have rabbit and mushroom stew.
spk_0 But suspicious stew is named purely based on the fact that, from just looking at it,
spk_0 you don't know what status effect it's going to give you.
spk_0 And so, from what I could tell, no one has ever really figured out what it's supposed to taste like.
spk_0 So today, I wanted to end that mystery.
spk_0 But not just in theory.
spk_0 I wanted to actually get hands on and taste it for myself.
spk_0 The problem is, I'm not a food guy.
spk_0 Sure, I love me some good research, and I'm not exactly bad in the kitchen,
spk_0 but this is getting to a level of foodie that I am not equipped to handle.
spk_0 I needed help, help from a friend of the channel, someone who's opinion I could trust,
spk_0 someone who knows their way around weird ingredients and crazy recipes.
spk_0 Sauted food.
spk_0 What? You thought I was going to say sassy?
spk_0 No, I need actual chefs.
spk_0 And so, here we are.
spk_0 We are here in the kitchen with the boys from Sauted.

spk_0 There's going to be quite an interesting one.

spk_0 And then, a little bit further in, I believe, is our suspicious stew.
spk_0 So, if you have a look at that, what are your initial thoughts?
spk_0 Vegan mushroom lentil stew,
spk_0 healthy and hearty.
spk_0 I mean, yeah, great.
spk_0 It's pretty straightforward.
spk_0 But Mojang went a step further.
spk_0 They made these.
spk_0 This is the official collaboration between Pringles
spk_0 and Minecraft in suspicious stew flavour.
spk_0 This was from 2022.
spk_0 We love eating out of Dave Foodie.
spk_0 Well, well, well, well.
spk_0 What are you getting?
spk_0 Yes, suspicious.
spk_0 What?
spk_0 Quite dusty, quite earthy.
spk_0 If that's what they're claiming,
spk_0 suspicious stew flavour is, it's mega-savor.
spk_0 Not exactly the suspicious flavour,
spk_0 any of us were expecting.
spk_0 If anything, it was just a generic savoury flavour.
spk_0 Thanks to the onion powder, garlic powder,
spk_0 tomato powder and paprika.
spk_0 Although, there were some ingredients
spk_0 that were a little more on the sus side.
spk_0 All the usual things you'd expect to find in here,
spk_0 like, Dysodium guanilate,
spk_0 Dysodium, Inosinate.
spk_0 None of those sound like ingredients.
spk_0 And this is where we come into today's episode,
spk_0 because both of these are wrong.
spk_0 So, who says me and their own freaking game?
spk_0 This is the actual recipe.
spk_0 Two mushrooms of flour and a...
spk_0 A bowl.
spk_0 A catapult.
spk_0 It's a bowl.
spk_0 Ha ha ha ha.
spk_0 So, yes, two mushrooms of flour and a bowl
spk_0 make suspicious stew.
spk_0 They have recipe book, not way too much going on.
spk_0 This doesn't have any mushroom in it,
spk_0 and you love mushroom powder.
spk_0 Why is that not in this?
spk_0 If that's true.
spk_0 Do you reckon we can make a stew from just three ingredients?
spk_0 I'm kind of interested to see whether we can.
spk_0 Unfortunately, it's a little more complicated
spk_0 than just following the recipe in Minecraft,
spk_0 because some of those ingredients are not safe to consume.
spk_0 This red one is fly agarate.
spk_0 Definitely poisonous.
spk_0 Please do not serve that to us.
spk_0 But from what I could research,
spk_0 people have been bold enough to boil it
spk_0 and use it for hallucinogenic purposes.
spk_0 And they say it has a typical mushroomy flavour,
spk_0 which what does that mean?
spk_0 It's a mini.
spk_0 But it's got a slight sweetness to it.
spk_0 That's probably going to be where that shift has to happen.
spk_0 From there, we get into the flowers,
spk_0 because again, not actually one flower.
spk_0 There are 12.
spk_0 Like, these flowers as a category.
spk_0 They find it botany.
spk_0 So, you've got...
spk_0 Allium.
spk_0 I mean, that looks like a chive flower.
spk_0 You've got, as your bluer, you've got the blue orchid.
spk_0 You've got a blue corn flower, a dandelion, lily of the valley.
spk_0 Do you say so?
spk_0 I mean, I've seen Breaking Bad.
spk_0 That'd kill you.
spk_0 So, have fun with that one.
spk_0 You've got an oxide dazing, tulips, poppies.
spk_0 And then there's the ingredients that don't even exist.
spk_0 So, now we've got this guy.
spk_0 This is the eye blossom,
spk_0 which, as you may guess from that name, isn't real.
spk_0 It was part of their new update.
spk_0 It was meant to be from a spooky update.
spk_0 It's a bit strange.
spk_0 What it does that's interesting is it opens at night.
spk_0 It gives you blindness if you put it into your suspicious stew when it's open.
spk_0 Oh.
spk_0 And when it's closed, it gives you nausea.
spk_0 It's like the opposite of a muscle.
spk_0 Basically.
spk_0 Now, this is another made-up flower called the torch flower.
spk_0 The torch flower in Minecraft is the torch plant in reality.
spk_0 There are these beautiful red hot poker,
spk_0 is there also known as...
spk_0 They were used a lot in, like, African tribal medicines.
spk_0 Was that heaven?
spk_0 Yes, there was fire on the way out as they were on the way in.
spk_0 Yeah, exactly.
spk_0 They are also a night vision one.
spk_0 And so, our final one here...

spk_0 It is sad.
spk_0 This is called the Wither Rose,
spk_0 which gives you the withering effect,
spk_0 which is basically just consistent pain for a while.
spk_0 But those are our 12th.

spk_0 It feels like there's a lovely balance between poisons, mushrooms, and poisonous flowers.
spk_0 And we've got to go and collect something.

spk_0 for these classic brown mushrooms?
spk_0 Yeah, classic sort of button mushroom.
spk_0 And then nice sort of king oyster mushroom
spk_0 just because they are the king of the mushroom world
spk_0 and they've got more texture, more bounce,
spk_0 good body, and they're work nice in this as well.
spk_0 So the slightly sweeter?
spk_0 Yeah, certainly when you cook them out,
spk_0 basically we'll go in and sort of off all the mushrooms.
spk_0 And then we'll go in with some flowers
spk_0 or kind of plants.
spk_0 Plants.
spk_0 You could for it.
spk_0 Roast.

spk_0 Around the buttery mushrooms to form a roux
spk_0 and then we'll use a mushroom broth
spk_0 to form a balloute around them.
spk_0 So it's essentially mushroom mushroom mushroom plants and flowers.
spk_0 Wow, so this is what it's like working with professionals.
spk_0 This already sounds delicious, you know,
spk_0 as long as you like mushrooms.
spk_0 But technically this was the easy part.
spk_0 Now we're onto the more unique ingredients.
spk_0 At least I thought they were.
spk_0 But now that I have a professional chef involved,
spk_0 this may have been more simple than I first thought.
spk_0 I have a soft spot for the very, very easy granted
spk_0 with the chive flowers or the allium flowers.
spk_0 Okay.
spk_0 Because I've grown them at home.
spk_0 They are so easy to grow even on a balcony.
spk_0 But I think we can just go heavy allium.
spk_0 What does that mean, though?
spk_0 What do you mean by allium?
spk_0 Because it sounds like you know what that means more than I do.
spk_0 Onion family.
spk_0 So chives, leaks, garlic, onion, obviously spring onions
spk_0 or salad onions.
spk_0 And I think, given this is so worth it,
spk_0 raw allium into dishes.
spk_0 I raw onion to finish a dish or some spring onions
spk_0 or some chives can give you a real acidity
spk_0 that just kind of lifts a dish.
spk_0 And I think with the earthiness that I've actually worked
spk_0 so simple, job done.
spk_0 What Ben forgot to mention, but has since told me in an email,
spk_0 is that onions are also high in quercetin,
spk_0 which is a natural anti-inflammatory.
spk_0 Get it?
spk_0 Anti-inflame atori as in fire resistance.
spk_0 Hey, don't blame us for that pun.
spk_0 I'm just happy there is some connection
spk_0 to realism in this game that we can achieve
spk_0 for this left to do now is taste it.
spk_0 Excellent decision, getting me to forage and then taste
spk_0 and be it no part of the dish.
spk_0 Well, I'm glad that works for you.
spk_0 It's very mushroomy, obviously.
spk_0 I think we've got another copy in paste.
spk_0 Yeah, I think we'll start to see a lot of recurring thing there.
spk_0 That sharpness from the spring onions,
spk_0 it really cuts through.
spk_0 And when we're developing a lot of recipes,
spk_0 we often consider adding a little bit of raw onion
spk_0 with it sliced red onions,
spk_0 but not just to garnish enough
spk_0 to actually bite through it and get in texture
spk_0 because that allium warmth is really good in earthy flavours.
spk_0 It's very thick and pleasurable, are they?
spk_0 Oh, they're...
spk_0 And on that note, let's move on.
spk_0 So, we have azure bluettes next,
spk_0 but I'm seeing you're holding a red leafy vegetable.
spk_0 Yes, we know that this kind of stuff is bitter,
spk_0 so we've just gone for some kind of bitter leaves.
spk_0 Swiss chard, really good, wonderful
spk_0 because of the vibrant red,
spk_0 which so often when you see it in things like
spk_0 toasts, and mushrooms, you know avoid,
spk_0 but actually here it's delicious just a bit bitter.
spk_0 And then we're going to serve it with some
spk_0 a falfer sprouts and these gorgeous leaves.
spk_0 And a falfer sprouts, you were saying there's a similar flavour profile.
spk_0 A similar flavour profile, but actually as some of you can by,
spk_0 these are hugely popular and trendy
spk_0 in sort of nutrition and well-being stores,
spk_0 but quite a dainty little option.
spk_0 Like, come and not die.
spk_0 It's almost like he doesn't trust you.
spk_0 What have you done to him over the years, Ben?
spk_0 He's very trusting.
spk_0 There's not much he won't put in his mouth.
spk_0 I have found...
spk_0 I can say bitter.
spk_0 Bitter from the chard and the sprouts.
spk_0 Adds that grassy note to the earthy tones of the mushrooms,
spk_0 but yeah, very much more on the bitter side rather than
spk_0 overpowering some of that, who liked me even a little bit,
spk_0 which is some of how bitter that is.
spk_0 The crunch is nice.
spk_0 For me, the curlies on top,
spk_0 it's a little bit too much.
spk_0 Too much, too bitter.
spk_0 Very popular in salads because they have that wonderful crunch.
spk_0 I quite like them, but they are very vegetal.
spk_0 I can imagine with quite an acidic dressing,
spk_0 that would really, really work nicely, but...
spk_0 Okay, so a little more mixed on that one,
spk_0 but certainly better than a stew that makes you blind.
spk_0 Next on our list is tulips,
spk_0 a flower which I've now learnt
spk_0 isn't really edible outside of the petal,
spk_0 although good luck finding ones that aren't covered in pesticides.
spk_0 However, according to Ben,
spk_0 if you do manage to find one or you just grogging yourselves,
spk_0 depending on the colours,
spk_0 you get flavours that are similar to things like
spk_0 peas and cucumber.
spk_0 So that's what we've gone for?
spk_0 Cube cumber, which all I've done is take the wet bits out the middle
spk_0 and we're just going to put that through.
spk_0 So we've actually got the crunch and the snap.
spk_0 Okay, come back as a texture in it.
spk_0 And peas and it's our absolute phenomenal,
spk_0 a wonderful garnish on seafood dishes,
spk_0 pasta dishes, risottoes.
spk_0 I've never had these before, but I totally get it.
spk_0 So often there are like foody things where it's like,
spk_0 oh, you get hints of this,
spk_0 like, and I'm sitting there going,
spk_0 ah, do I get that?
spk_0 But that I absolutely get subtle peabit
spk_0 in that kind of grassy floorly way that would probably...
spk_0 I would assume match what we get from tulips.
spk_0 But of course, as with any experiment and with Ben being the chef for the years,
spk_0 he decided to change things up on me at the last minutes.
spk_0 I'm actually standing here thinking this was our plan,
spk_0 and now I'm thinking I might change it.

spk_0 I am eating these pea shoots and having an interesting experience.

spk_0 Turns out, there's a reason I've never had these before.
spk_0 But with antihist means in hand,
spk_0 I'm all good and ready to try this stew.
spk_0 I'll just eat around the pea shoots this time.

spk_0 No, that's subtle, but nice.
spk_0 Because of all the extra moisture we've added
spk_0 through wet cucumber,
spk_0 it's actually a nice eating consistency.
spk_0 Genuinely adding something,
spk_0 which is ironic because cucumber tastes of not much.
spk_0 And tell you, you put it into a big vat of water
spk_0 in a hotel lobby,
spk_0 and then the most cucumber you can ever try.
spk_0 Right.
spk_0 And I think my chefy instincts love these flavours
spk_0 because just I think smell alone.
spk_0 They take you back to a greenhouse or an allotment
spk_0 or a grouierone or just basically very spring
spk_0 summer vines.
spk_0 Just cucumber sandwiches.
spk_0 Or you know, foraging around the overworld.
spk_0 That one.
spk_0 I just forgot where I was.
spk_0 Forget it.

spk_0 OK, so at this point,
spk_0 we've had a few flowers that aren't truly edible.
spk_0 But Ben and Mike have put their true theorist
spk_0 brains to work using quote-unquote notes
spk_0 of other flavours to get us as close as we can.
spk_0 And on the whole, they worked relatively well.
spk_0 But as we all know,
spk_0 sometimes we theorists love to overcomplicate things.
spk_0 And there are actually a bunch of flowers
spk_0 in Minecraft that we can just straight up eat.
spk_0 Rather than adding garnishes or other vegetables.
spk_0 So let's start with the humble dandelion.
spk_0 So dandelions.
spk_0 It's a flower we all know.
spk_0 What are we doing for it?
spk_0 It's a flower that's actually already
spk_0 quite a culinary flower.
spk_0 So the dandelion root you can use in all sorts of things.
spk_0 But here the dandelion flowers, we've picked up dried.
spk_0 You can either just make a tea from it.
spk_0 So we've literally just steeped it in hot water.
spk_0 Have a smell.
spk_0 OK.
spk_0 Very floral, earthy grassy.
spk_0 But also they say quite honey-like, but not sweetness.
spk_0 So you get almost like the perfume
spk_0 flaw of honey, no sweetness.
spk_0 But I'm going to add some honey into it.
spk_0 So you now get the flavour and the sweetness.
spk_0 So if you just strain it off,
spk_0 the liquid we're left with should now be sweet from honey,
spk_0 but perfume from dandelion.
spk_0 A dandelion tea.
spk_0 The question is, does that work with the mushrooms?
spk_0 With the depth of the mushroom.
spk_0 I don't know, but it's going to be pixelated, so I don't care.

spk_0 It's great, but there's a little bit of lawn mower.

spk_0 I mean, this is Minecraft.
spk_0 It's all about foraging and finding your own food.
spk_0 So this is quite literally,
spk_0 I mean, they are scattered all over lawns and meadows and parks
spk_0 in the UK certainly.
spk_0 Yeah, all over the place.
spk_0 But this is the tea that it comes from,
spk_0 which I want to try before we think about what it's going to do to that.
spk_0 Please do.
spk_0 And then we mix a little bit into the ballutate elusinus slightly.
spk_0 Okay.
spk_0 And finish it with some of the leaves.
spk_0 Really?
spk_0 Very mellow.
spk_0 That's nice.
spk_0 Again, I know it's at the sweetness and we had a little bit of honey
spk_0 to help with that sweetness.
spk_0 That honey ginger lemon tea vibe.
spk_0 Yeah, it's very much of that.
spk_0 It's just the grassy sort of earthy,
spk_0 but it's nothing like really potent.
spk_0 No, it's the perfect balance between sweetness.
spk_0 So subtle that it just takes the edge off the grassyness,
spk_0 which makes it really, really tasty.
spk_0 So now, here's it mixed in.
spk_0 The mushroom loosened up,
spk_0 but actually I think it's the leaves again.
spk_0 I think in that dry form,
spk_0 an interesting eating experience in mouthful.
spk_0 But it's like peppiness.
spk_0 All right, delicious.
spk_0 The texture's really pleasant, actually.
spk_0 But the subtle shift.
spk_0 It's very, very subtle.
spk_0 Like, you could put more in and boil it down over time to be fair.
spk_0 But now having the sours loosened up is nice.
spk_0 I always expect to be almost, I feel like gritty,
spk_0 or like, gritty, when you get something stuck in your teeth
spk_0 in your mouth, why don't you shift,
spk_0 but it kind of just melts almost.
spk_0 But it hasn't made it worse.
spk_0 No, and that's the key thing.
spk_0 Like, if you've got a bowl of this,
spk_0 in your pirate ship, in your fortress,
spk_0 or wherever it is you find it,
spk_0 I mean, you probably wouldn't want to eat it,
spk_0 because it's probably been there for centuries,
spk_0 and you don't know.
spk_0 If the refrigeration's good, but it tastes alright.
spk_0 And should keep hunger locked up.
spk_0 It's all done.
spk_0 And he's not saying that just to make a pun.
spk_0 Dandelions do have an actual saturation effect,
spk_0 thanks to the vitamin A inside them.
spk_0 You see, vitamin A regularly hormones like lectin,
spk_0 which can act as a satiety hormone
spk_0 that usually is produced by fat cells
spk_0 to signal to the brain that you have enough energy.
spk_0 Therefore, reducing your appetite.
spk_0 So, I guess that's another win for Mojang,
spk_0 and another win for us and the taste of these stews.
spk_0 Sadly, this more direct approach won't continue
spk_0 being as successful as we'd like going forward.
spk_0 Oxide, daisies, cornflours, and poppies
spk_0 all have dried variants that you can use to make teas.
spk_0 They just don't really taste of all that much.
spk_0 Yeah, it's just kind of like slightly garasi water.
spk_0 The very subtle flavors just get completely overpowered
spk_0 by the strong rich flavors of the mushroom base.
spk_0 Then did try his best to make up for it with visuals.
spk_0 But that looks fantastic.
spk_0 Yeah, and the confession is, that's all.
spk_0 Oh, it looks fantastic, but we've not added anything
spk_0 to the stew. It's really just there for you eat with your eyes.
spk_0 It smells good.
spk_0 At least with the poppy, there is some extra texture,
spk_0 thanks to the poppy seeds,
spk_0 but overall, the literal flowers had just kind of been disappointed.
spk_0 Though there was one that even I felt pretty confident
spk_0 would change our tune, the Wither Rose.
spk_0 So these, I recognize.
spk_0 Much more familiar.
spk_0 Much more.
spk_0 And on the scale of like petals and flowers
spk_0 and floral things to use, these deliver flea.
spk_0 They're the much more in that sort of stronger
spk_0 rather than just vaguely garasi.
spk_0 But also because somebody else has already done the hard work.
spk_0 I extracted all of the deliciousness
spk_0 into something like rose water,
spk_0 which you will find in all sorts of sweets and confectionery.
spk_0 I think most typically and famously in Turkish delight.
spk_0 Yes.
spk_0 So, so good.
spk_0 Well, they're well with mushrooms.
spk_0 Yes, so in a savoury dish.
spk_0 Who knows?
spk_0 Something else from the florist?
spk_0 Rose.
