spk_0 Welcome into this Tuesday edition of Push in the Pile.
spk_0 The show is brought to you by Fando sportsbook.
spk_0 Make every moment more.
spk_0 Mike Brenner, Kyle Long, JP Acosta, and we had a game last night.
spk_0 That was JP.
spk_0 I know you're on cloud nine.
spk_0 We'll get to you in a second.
spk_0 Jaguar's win 31 28 as three point dogs at home.
spk_0 It was a wild one.
spk_0 JP, let's hear it.
spk_0 That was the most Jacksonville Jaguar's way for anything, any of that to happen.
spk_0 I want to be completely honest.
spk_0 That's also a game the Jaguars have lost my entire life.
spk_0 They go down 14, nothing.
spk_0 Trevor tries a Superman jump over and he fumbles of all in the goal line,
spk_0 which Trevor Lawrence has never been good at quarterback sneaks.
spk_0 He's never been a push push guy because he's so tall, but also really skinny.
spk_0 You know, you can't really push those guys.
spk_0 So he's always done the Superman jump over the Drupes, just like reach small out over
spk_0 the goal line and pull it back.
spk_0 He's always done that, but it was a really great play by Nick Bolton to go and make that
spk_0 play him not the ball out because they knew he was going to try and jump over.
spk_0 But after that fumble, I was pretty sure the Jaguars are going to lose that game.
spk_0 That was a game the Jaguars have lost all the time.
spk_0 Patrick Mahomes was incredible on Monday night, but this team finds ways to win.
spk_0 And I think that it was largely because they got the Trevor Lawrence that they kind of
spk_0 needed in this game.
spk_0 And I said after the game, you need reckless like volatile Trevor Lawrence.
spk_0 If you are going to get close to the mutant quarterbacks, you're not going to beat the Josh
spk_0 Allen's, the Lamar Jackson's, the Patrick Mahomes of the world without Trevor Lawrence
spk_0 doing what he did yesterday.
spk_0 My big number from this game was six.
spk_0 That's the amount of scrambles Trevor Lawrence had in this game.
spk_0 A career high.
spk_0 He had 54 yards on 10 carries.
spk_0 I said literally like on the first drive of the game, I wish Trevor Lawrence would
spk_0 scramble more.
spk_0 He's a good athlete.
spk_0 And then he turns into the most dual threat version of Trevor Lawrence we've seen since
spk_0 his final year at Clemson.
spk_0 So I think just having that ability to scramble to extend plays, the creation mode where Trevor
spk_0 Lawrence is kind of rein that in since his first year in the NFL, having that is what's
spk_0 going to help the Jaguars reach the point of being able to compete with the bills, being
spk_0 able to compete with the Ravens because you hire Liam Cohen to raise the floor of the
spk_0 offense.
spk_0 So when he eventually does do the stupid stuff, like look, for some reason, he just never
spk_0 knows where to line his scrimmages and he'll always throw the ball while still being
spk_0 about the line of scrimmages.
spk_0 It's really funny.
spk_0 You need Trevor Lawrence playing that volatile.
spk_0 You need him playing with those high in throws.
spk_0 The Bryant Thomas Jr. throw on I believe third down then following up with the Deami Brown
spk_0 out route, you need those kinds of plays for the Jaguars to get close to beating those
spk_0 top teams.
spk_0 So I thought this was another way the Jaguars have shown they can win games.
spk_0 They've won games with their defense.
spk_0 They've won games with their run game and now they won one because of their quarterback.
spk_0 Yeah, Mike, I would say this.
spk_0 I agree with everything JP says.
spk_0 And when you've got a quarterback who you know as a guy, it's going to stay in the pocket
spk_0 and make the throws, the defense treats you a certain way.
spk_0 Now when that quarterback shows the ability to get out of Dodge with his legs, it opens
spk_0 up so much in the middle of the field in particular.
spk_0 And you look at the way that Trevor was getting out of Dodge.
spk_0 He was running back through the eye of the storm and we've talked about this a lot.
spk_0 There's quarterbacks who run around the pocket and then there's quarterbacks that step
spk_0 up into the pocket for whatever reason.
spk_0 When that backflit hit the ground and things were sketchy, he was able to get out of Dodge.
spk_0 And I also credit him for this.
spk_0 We tell these quarterbacks slide all the time.
spk_0 Trevor took some big hits down the field and for him to retain possession of the football
spk_0 and get up with you know, get up not gingerly.
spk_0 It speaks to the specimen that he is physically.
spk_0 And I think we lose sight with all these free quarterbacks who can run.
spk_0 How athletic, how big, how strong and tough Trevor Lawrence is.
spk_0 And it's so great for the NFL to have a guy like Trevor Lawrence in a team like the Jaguars
spk_0 competing and beating the Kansas City Chiefs in prime time.
spk_0 Look, Chiefs looked great early last night.
spk_0 I'm not really tripping on the Chiefs.
spk_0 I learned more about the Jaguars last night in this game.
spk_0 And I feel like this is a team that we've seen in the playoffs.
spk_0 And if they can get that kind of action and juice out of Trevor Lawrence.
spk_0 And if Brian Thomas Jr. can be that guy in their offense who's making those big plays
spk_0 on the whole shots and Deami Browne.
spk_0 Like Deami Browne's awesome dude.
spk_0 They have a bunch of guys.
spk_0 Tutan is fun to watch, physical juice.
spk_0 It feel like their whole unit is kind of like that.
spk_0 And you could see that with the devil white pick six as well.
spk_0 Devin Lloyd.
spk_0 Devin Lloyd.
spk_0 That's absolutely.
spk_0 And by the way, he's been a revelation through.
spk_0 There were three guys I thought they were going to catch Devin Lloyd.
spk_0 And it was so funny to watch.
spk_0 It was like cars weaving out of, you know, weaving in and out of a highway traffic,
spk_0 trying to catch that one rabbit car.
spk_0 And there was a few guys.
spk_0 I was like, he's going to get him.
spk_0 No, he's going to get him.
spk_0 I guess he's gone.
spk_0 I'm going to talk about a frigging backbreaker, low red pick six.
spk_0 And that's studying.
spk_0 That's studying.
spk_0 It's funny because both teams had like the backbreaker.
spk_0 You had the fumble at the goal lines and 97 yard touchdown drives and the chiefs.
spk_0 And then you had the goal line pick six.
spk_0 So like both teams got theirs.
spk_0 But I was cracking up last night every time Trevor Lawrence ran because we were literally
spk_0 like, was it last week or two weeks ago where on this pod just be like run, just run.
spk_0 Don't pass it when you're two yards past the line of scrimmage.
spk_0 When you're two yards past the line of scrimmage, you should be at full speed.
spk_0 And for the like very first time in his career, it seemed like that was something that he
spk_0 was actively searching out.
spk_0 And I, you know, outside of the last touchdown, which was one of the crazy places for
spk_0 playing.
spk_0 I'm not going to play drive.
spk_0 But Trevor still got some, it's just a, it's just still got some weirdness.
spk_0 The delay of games, a delay of game on the final drive.
spk_0 I don't know how that's possible in a two minute situation to take a delay of game.
spk_0 It's something I just like almost have never seen.
spk_0 It's just like, just like what was that?
spk_0 And so this Jack's team still can't really quite get out of their own way.
spk_0 But I thought a really big play in this game was the Travis Hunter catch.
spk_0 Under his own, it was a play that just basically you could span Trevor Lawrence's entire
spk_0 career and know that that played never gets made.
spk_0 Like that's a play that just never got made by his previous receiving course.
spk_0 That now he finally has a guy where it's like, oh, I don't have to be perfect.
spk_0 He's going to make up for my mistakes.
spk_0 You finally have those guys and Brian, well, hopefully in Brian time of the shooting,
spk_0 once he catches the football because Trevor Lawrence does still lead the league and
spk_0 drop rate from his wide receivers.
spk_0 But once you have that guy and have that trust, I think this offense is only going to look
spk_0 better as the season wears on.
spk_0 I think they're already where they're at now able to lead a game winning drive the way
spk_0 they did.
spk_0 I think you're only going to see it improve health permitting as the season wears on.
spk_0 Was that a, did he back into a whip route?
spk_0 Was that when I was looking out there?
spk_0 He ran with the whip route.
spk_0 He had his back to the two secondary guys and then he made, he made Euro step two defenders,
spk_0 plays like that, dude.
spk_0 And you see Patrick make them in the game.
spk_0 I think he threw it to Hollywood Brown on the left side of the screen.
spk_0 He made two guys miss in a similar fashion.
spk_0 When we think about these great quarterbacks, we think about them putting the ball in the
spk_0 perfect spot and making all these incredible, herculean throws.
spk_0 But the ones that are big time throws are the ones where you throw it to the wrong shoulder.
spk_0 You under throw it.
spk_0 And your guy can make a play.
spk_0 And for a guy like Travis Hunter put his foot in the ground with his back to the defense.
spk_0 Flip his body around.
spk_0 Get vision.
spk_0 Make two guys miss.
spk_0 That helps trevously a lot easier at night.
spk_0 More so than the 50, 50 ball down the field.
spk_0 I know he's going to catch it.
spk_0 No, if stuff sketchy, get the ball out and make your head.
spk_0 They've got guys like that.
spk_0 It's exciting to see.
spk_0 He also made a lot of really good plays at defensive back.
spk_0 The first drive he had a PBU on Travis Kelsey when they left him in May coverage.
spk_0 So I think he played 25 snaps on defense 39 on offense.
spk_0 He came out at one point.
spk_0 I think he was literally just cramping.
spk_0 So they just took him out for a couple of plays.
spk_0 But it speaks to the amount of faith that Trevor Lawrence has in these receivers.
spk_0 I think he continues to throw at them in high leverage situations.
spk_0 We've talked about Brian Thomas Jr.
spk_0 Not being able to catch the ball.
spk_0 Then being off biggest play at a game.
spk_0 They go down.
spk_0 They go to Brian Thomas Jr.
spk_0 in that moment.
spk_0 Another play on that game will drive.
spk_0 They go to Brian Thomas Jr.
spk_0 He draws a DPI.
spk_0 So continuing to go to these guys.
spk_0 You show the faith that you have in players who are struggling by continuing to
spk_0 go with them.
spk_0 You continue to go and throw them the ball.
spk_0 So it was this was the biggest regular season when the Jaguars have had in
spk_0 legitimately like three years.
spk_0 And again, like for Kansas City.
spk_0 It feels like the late game magic.
spk_0 The short one score game stuff is kind of worn off.
spk_0 But again, Patrick Mahomes was awesome.
spk_0 Like you really couldn't ask for much.
spk_0 I got one question because you guys are like some of the brightest people.
spk_0 I get to talk to about this stuff.
spk_0 And I'm not sure if it was covered on the main broadcast,
spk_0 but I was watching Peyton and Eli.
spk_0 Because Fred Warner was on.
spk_0 By the way, Fred Warner fantastic.
spk_0 The end of game Hail Mary.
spk_0 I got a question about.
spk_0 Do you think that Patrick could have gotten the ball into the end zone?
spk_0 If he changed the trajectory, that's A and B.
spk_0 Do you think that he threw a moon ball intentionally because they know that
spk_0 any penalty on the last play will not allow the play to end.
spk_0 Get us in field goal.
spk_0 Throw a jump ball in field goal range versus trying to throw the ball
spk_0 into the end zone.
spk_0 Do you think there's anything worth discussing there?
spk_0 Because I thought if you're playing, you know, if you're playing Galaxy Brain there,
spk_0 throw a moon ball at the 25 yard line, you know what I'm saying?
spk_0 Instead of having to throw it to the end zone, is there any truth to what I'm saying?
spk_0 I don't think so.
spk_0 They were at their own 28.
spk_0 That means you're releasing it.
spk_0 Even if you get back to the line of scrimmage, you've got to get 73, 74 to get in.
spk_0 It's not hard to believe it to the end zone.
spk_0 They were at 74 yards.
spk_0 And with what your dad told me about humidity, it doesn't affect the, you know,
spk_0 thicker air doesn't affect the total distance.
spk_0 Boo, he's it.
spk_0 Uh, but I don't think he would have had to get back to the line of scrimmage.
spk_0 Like if you're at in the pocket, I don't think he could have gotten it there.
spk_0 So six yards behind.
spk_0 I don't think there's any chance he was getting it 77 78 yards.
spk_0 Honestly, I'm not sure anyone in the NFL, I would think could get it there.
spk_0 70 rich.
spk_0 I don't even think him.
spk_0 I'll say the closest would be Joe Milton, Joe Milton's the only guy.
spk_0 Yeah, even he said that he has to not think about it.
spk_0 Yes, and not try to throw far to throw far.
spk_0 So I also think they were trying to go for a tip grew, which is why I had the
spk_0 trajectory.
spk_0 It had the arc that it did because that ball stops at what the 25, 20 yard line.
spk_0 I think they were going for the, uh, commanders hail Mary from last year,
spk_0 where you tip the ball up.
spk_0 Where they, where you try and tip the ball up because I think they had it.
spk_0 So, um, some by those running behind, I think it was jujitsu's mischuster down
spk_0 there, but they're trying, they had to my running behind so they could tip it back
spk_0 to them and they try and score off of that because by my side, there were like
spk_0 three seconds left.
spk_0 So even if you were going to try and kick a field goal, you would have to have
spk_0 drawn PI on a Hail Mary, which they rarely, if ever call.
spk_0 And I think they got to do the Saddam edit for Drew Tranquil, who broke up the
spk_0 interception that Nick Bolton had his hands twice.
spk_0 Uh, my, my wife and I are watching this game.
spk_0 She's, she's like, what, what is happening there?
spk_0 Is that just selfish play?
spk_0 I'm like, these defensive players don't get the touch the ball when they see it.
spk_0 It's just like, yeah, it's kind of because he was going to tackle Trevor Lawrence on
spk_0 the touchdown, the final touchdown.
spk_0 Jerry Tillery, then just like Molly walked his ass and knocked him out of the
spk_0 plate.
spk_0 But like Drew Tranquil had a beat on Trevor Lawrence and Jerry Tiller knocked him out.
spk_0 So we got his, he got his carmic revenge there for trying to break off that
spk_0 interception.
spk_0 Um, I do think the cheese will be fine offensively.
spk_0 They are, you know, last year they were bottom five and explosive plays running
spk_0 the ball and passing ball.
spk_0 That is completely different.
spk_0 This is an explosion.
spk_0 Like this.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 And it's only got to get more explosive when Rishi Rice comes back.
spk_0 Like there is, there is juice to this team and it actually in ways I'm more excited
spk_0 about them, but I just don't think, I just don't think the past rush is walking through
spk_0 that door.
spk_0 I think Chris Jones has lost a little and yeah, he's still dominant.
spk_0 Like, but he's not the guy who every single time he gets a one on one, it's like game over.
spk_0 That's what you needed to make it work.
spk_0 And then the secondary is just not that good.
spk_0 Outside of Tremac Duffy, Tremac Duffy still nails wasn't this game too.
spk_0 Outside Tremac Duffy, you got guys who are not able to play one on one when you face
spk_0 better wide receivers as we saw down the stretch in this game.
spk_0 So the chiefs, that's why they're losing these one score games.
spk_0 The defense is not the defense we saw last year.
spk_0 And I think to that point, the chiefs offense really gave the Jaguars a lot of
spk_0 fits with the RPO stuff, which is exactly what you wanted from the chiefs offense.
spk_0 Because of the threat of speed with Xavier worthy Hollywood Brown all on the field,
spk_0 they would they would do a lot of three by one formations where they would have,
spk_0 it was either no longer a Travis Kelsey as the nub tied in on the opposite side.
spk_0 And then all three of your receivers to the other side.
spk_0 And they're trying to basically force the Jaguars into making a choice.
spk_0 You either defend the run with an attached tied in or you have to go in and
spk_0 try and defend our three receivers to the outside with leverage.
spk_0 And they just RPOed a lot of the jack.
spk_0 That's how the chiefs were able to get their explosive runs back.
spk_0 They were able to run those RPOs and forced the linebackers into a bind.
spk_0 So the fact that the chiefs are able to do that and be explosive.
spk_0 I'm not super worried, like you said, about the chiefs offense.
spk_0 The chiefs defense is going to be their problem.
spk_0 Because like you said, Chris Jones, I actually thought Chris Jones was getting a lot
spk_0 of pressure, a lot of penetration in the run game, but it's everybody else outside of
spk_0 him that has to go up the pieces like that.
spk_0 Chris Jones is the guy who forces the pressure.
spk_0 But nobody's cleaning up the pressure and turning it into sacks like it did last
spk_0 year or the year before.
spk_0 Hey, two really quick things.
spk_0 Number one, I texted JP about this during the game.
spk_0 Shout out to McCarrie's jumpset.
spk_0 That man was on his jumpset business last night because he was often opposite Chris
spk_0 Jones.
spk_0 So we get the slide left and McCarrie had the tight two, three.
spk_0 And he was just just jumping the whole night.
spk_0 The other thing, and I'm going to get up for this.
spk_0 Jimmy thumbs up if you can hear me.
spk_0 Can you hear me?
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 Patrick Mahomes.
spk_0 What did you want to do?
spk_0 Read option.
spk_0 The rushing touchdown.
spk_0 Patrick Mahomes is reading the crash and defensive.
spk_0 And he makes a proper read.
spk_0 We all know this.
spk_0 This is football 101.
spk_0 He crashes Patrick keeps.
spk_0 If you notice out wide, there are two offensive players and two defenders.
spk_0 And when Patrick Mahomes kept that football, the defenders stayed outside.
spk_0 Now, if you know football and you know Patrick Mahomes,
spk_0 you know why they stayed outside because he's the sick.
spk_0 So be cool.
spk_0 Keep the quarterback keep and throw it to these guys when you crash.
spk_0 It's interesting to see that they're letting Mahomes at this point in his career,
spk_0 really have the green light in the read option stuff.
spk_0 And you guys know when your quarterback can do that, it opens up a lot in the passing
spk_0 game and it opens up a lot in the running game.
spk_0 I was interested to see if in the future, we're going to get that.
spk_0 Read option in the red area, crash the two secondary guys pitch.
spk_0 It's going to be the read option pitch.
spk_0 That's what I think's next.
spk_0 I've been around Matt Nagy.
spk_0 He's going to see the play and he's going to say we're doing that next week.
spk_0 And I said it during the game, but playing Patrick Mahomes,
spk_0 watching Patrick Mahomes is so fun until he's playing your favorite team
spk_0 because he's going to do something that just like breaks all the rules.
spk_0 I think it was the sack that he avoided in late in the game on the,
spk_0 is either a scramble or the throw to like Hollywood Brown, where the one smooth has him wrapped up.
spk_0 And I swear he hits the ground, but his core strength and contact balance.
spk_0 I called it like limitless dad strength.
spk_0 Like he's just, he never goes down and he just always makes those plays.
spk_0 But for the chiefs, you know, like it's crazy that they kind of were going back and forth.
spk_0 Trevor Lawrence and Patrick Mahomes going back and forth with the chaos plays.
spk_0 Two year point Kyle Mahomes runs a lot.
spk_0 They don't design runs for him.
spk_0 They don't, they don't option.
spk_0 You know, they are PO, but it's a pass option.
spk_0 It's not a he's going to run as one of the options.
spk_0 So I do wonder if they really do need to get in a lot of shootouts and they need to go deeper
spk_0 in the bag offensively to win these games.
spk_0 If they start maybe recanting on that and using them a little more,
spk_0 and I think that was a play where it's still at RPO, but a built in.
spk_0 Hey, you can run this to.
spk_0 We'll see.
spk_0 All right.
spk_0 Let's get to quick break here.
spk_0 But after that, we have our trench takes from Kyle, JP's playbook, my rookie report,
spk_0 and then our upon further review segment as we do every single Tuesday coming up next.
spk_0 All right.
spk_0 So we've got our trench takes now.
spk_0 Okay. This is now it's time for the trench takes sponsored by Nationwide,
spk_0 just like any good alignment can protect the quarterback and open lanes for the run game.
spk_0 Nationwide offers great insurance and great financial services.
spk_0 Nationwide is on your side.
spk_0 I know I got into the weeds last week with the jumpset.
spk_0 I just tip my cap to McCarrion.
spk_0 His jumpset.
spk_0 That's called a callback for those of you in the media.
spk_0 Well, this week I'm going to touch on a few different things.
spk_0 Just these are opinions I have.
spk_0 Okay.
spk_0 Christian Derrissau is the closest thing on planet earth to Trent Williams.
spk_0 And when I say that, you might ask me why I say that.
spk_0 And I'll say go watch the speed at which he can get defenders on the ground.
spk_0 Okay.
spk_0 That is what made Trent Williams and makes him so special.
spk_0 Obviously his ability to run out front of these plays and be the lead blocker in the convoys.
spk_0 A huge deal.
spk_0 And that, you know, you have to highlight that when you're talking about these athletes,
spk_0 particularly at the tackle position.
spk_0 But when I'm looking at this guy, Christian Derrissau,
spk_0 it's the backside of a play and a lot of offensive linemen are like,
spk_0 yeah, this is just an opportunity to get between the ball and my defender.
spk_0 Christian Derrissau is trying to get people on the ground.
spk_0 You can tell he loves the game of football.
spk_0 He loves the violence of it.
spk_0 His technique, particularly with his hands is incredible.
spk_0 The only way you can get these grown men on the ground is if you are impeccable with your hands.
spk_0 And strong like you just came down from Mount Olympus,
spk_0 I took my cap to Christian Derrissau and remember a couple of years when he got in the building.
spk_0 And I was talking to some of my buddies up there and I'm like, you know,
spk_0 how much fun is it to be around Justin Jefferson and blah, blah, blah,
spk_0 all these players are like, no, I do.
spk_0 That's what we about Christian Derrissau.
spk_0 And that speaks volume.
spk_0 You guys have talked to guys in buildings and when they tell you about a guy,
spk_0 you got to listen.
spk_0 So having appreciation for Christian Derrissau, okay?
spk_0 I don't want to jump in.
spk_0 I don't want to be quick with Derrissau.
spk_0 His tape at Virginia Tech was still some of the most unique offensive tackle tape I can remember
spk_0 because I've never seen a guy seemingly try less,
spk_0 like seemingly more effortless playing tackle, but have more pancakes.
spk_0 Like usually the guys who pancake a lot put guys on the ground like you're saying.
spk_0 Usually they're like jumping out of their stance, they're super aggressive.
spk_0 They have a place out to them.
spk_0 I wish I was Derrissau.
spk_0 Yeah, they have a place to them that's like overtly physical with Derrissau.
spk_0 I was just seemingly yeah, exactly like a high end sumo wrestler who just was going up against people he knew every single
spk_0 and I was like, how's this going to translate when he gets the NFL because these are college guys, you know,
spk_0 it's at Virginia Tech.
spk_0 It's not the best competition that you face in college.
spk_0 And so like, yeah, that works.
spk_0 Then is he going to have like a next gear to turn on?
spk_0 He hasn't really.
spk_0 He still has the sea looks the same, but now he's just doing it to the best athletes in the world.
spk_0 The guy's just a unique great.
spk_0 It's like it's like when you watch those old like karate movies where like you see the guy you see the guy
spk_0 running at the karate master and he just pushed him out the way.
spk_0 Even so, yeah, it's like how Mr. Miyagi would tell people tell him wax on wax off.
spk_0 And then the whole bright Bruce Lee like be water.
spk_0 It feels like Christian Derrissau is water where he's just like it's effortless to him.
spk_0 Like you guys said, he just reacts and flows with however the defender moves and he uses their force against him.
spk_0 It's it.
spk_0 I've somehow gone from Steven's go to Bruce Lee to Obi-Wan Kenobi like it's a Jedi used in the force.
spk_0 Like he just swatched hands down.
spk_0 You end up on the ground next play.
spk_0 Everything is short and everything is violent.
spk_0 Like the guys should do big movements to your point, Mike.
spk_0 The guys who are jumping out of their stance and big loud body language.
spk_0 He is tight.
spk_0 He is as Harry he stands used to say armless from the back.
spk_0 And when you watch great offensive linemen, their elbows are tucked in here in the run game.
spk_0 In the past game, you don't see their arms from the back because it's within the framework of their body.
spk_0 But it's the run game stuff, particularly on the backside.
spk_0 You can spring a plate five yards to 50 yards.
spk_0 If you've got a back tack back side tackle or a backside offensive guard who's willing to get guys down,
spk_0 willing to go take the right angle.
spk_0 They've got that in Derrissau.
spk_0 I just wanted to tip my cap to them.
spk_0 And if O'Neill is going to be banged up, you're going to need a new button to left tackle
spk_0 because you're going to need to allocate some of those resources.
spk_0 The second thing, Justin Herbert without his two tackles is just not safe.
spk_0 He's just not safe.
spk_0 Now we're going to talk about that more, right JP?
spk_0 We're going to get into that some more.
spk_0 So I'll let you throw the fastball on that.
spk_0 Moving on to my third topic.
spk_0 The Eagles are hurting again up front and it's been this way and we've been trying to whisper it.
spk_0 Have we not?
spk_0 We've been whispering this about to fill out the Eagles.
spk_0 I know that AJ Brown's great and we can find more creative ways to get him the ball.
spk_0 And Devonte is pissed off too and say quads at 2.5 yards of care.
spk_0 But guys, the answer's right there in front of us.
spk_0 It's not going to be the Philadelphia Eagles.
spk_0 We remember unless these guys go into the the Matt Stafford clone RV and figure out a way to get a healthy version of Landon Dickerson.
spk_0 Figure out a way to get a healthy version of Lane Johnson albeit Lane Johnson.
spk_0 I don't know what percentage he's at, but he was he was lightening it up the other day.
spk_0 He looked like Lane Johnson, but if Landon Dickerson is not healthy and he got rolled up.
spk_0 Again, so that's the third fourth time Landon's been in trouble.
spk_0 If steam and Lane or whoever's in for Lane don't have a good understanding of where to fit on the double teams.
spk_0 Getting guys off the ball.
spk_0 It's obvious they miss McIbecten, but this is not the same group that was dominant on first and second down in the National Football League last year.
spk_0 This is not the same group that allows Sequan Barclay to be untouched until 4.5 yards.
spk_0 So the superhero, the superhuman type performances we saw last year from this offense.
spk_0 That just ain't going to happen.
spk_0 I'm not saying they're not a good team. They're just not the same team.
spk_0 So don't expect that.
spk_0 And you know, kind of hit the reset button and form your own opinions on watching this team.
spk_0 Because they ain't the guys that they were last year.
spk_0 Okay, that was my trench take sponsored by Nationwide.
spk_0 So much more than a great insurance company.
spk_0 They're one of America's largest financial financial services companies too for your insurance and financial needs nationwide is on your side.
spk_0 Nationwide investment services corporation member, Fintra Columbus, Ohio.
spk_0 I think the point you had about the Eagles and their offensive line is such a good one.
spk_0 Especially because like you said, they run the ball on early downs.
spk_0 There's nothing really much that has changed about the formula for the Eagles offensively.
spk_0 When it comes to run pass split, so we mentioned it on Sunday.
spk_0 The Eagles are still one of the least pass heavy teams on early downs in the NFL.
spk_0 They're 31st last year, 31st this year.
spk_0 The problem is last year they were first in NFL in the NFL EPA precaried this year.
spk_0 They've gone down to 13.
spk_0 And while you might say, oh, I still like top half the league going from first to 13th in a year.
spk_0 It changes a lot of math.
spk_0 It changes a lot of stuff though the yards before carry is has gone down on early downs.
spk_0 And it's not just that it's the fact that they're not being able to punish light boxes like they used to last year.
spk_0 So now that you can't punish light boxes with the run game like you did last year because landed dickers in his hurt and type of scene just isn't my guy beckton.
spk_0 You have a new problem, which is how are you going to remain efficient on early downs.
spk_0 So this in this game is the Broncos they leaned into sort of the RPO stuff, but again that only last you.
spk_0 However long until the Broncos sort of just figured it out.
spk_0 And once they figured it out, they realize the Eagles can't run the ball.
spk_0 And that that's how you lose a 17 three lead and lose the game.
spk_0 You can't you can't run the ball.
spk_0 They may be in trouble and we're going to get to that in our pot further review segment a little later.
spk_0 I shape it. Let's hit your playbomb.
spk_0 All right. So first play of the playbook.
spk_0 We are going to the Devon Lloyd pick six because I actually think it was a great call by Anthony Campanelli to combat a play that the chiefs use a lot in the red zone.
spk_0 So the chiefs really like this play called trail.
spk_0 It's a trail follow route. I drew it up right here.
spk_0 It's not exactly to scale, but that inside guy inside guy is Travis Kelsey.
spk_0 What they do is they make they make it they take advantage of the speed of their wide receiver on the outside.
spk_0 And Travis Kelsey's ability to change direction.
spk_0 And they basically put linebackers in a bind at patch of the homes is so good in the quick game that he just makes those decisions.
spk_0 And so what Campanelli and the Jaguars did is they lined up everybody at the line of scrimmage.
spk_0 It looks like they're going to bring the house. It's the goal line.
spk_0 It's like we got to make sure he gets his ball out quick or he's getting sad.
spk_0 Patch from home sees this and it's like all right.
spk_0 I know I'm going to get this ball out to the shallow because they're in zero coverage.
spk_0 And the shallow isn't coming from Taekwondo or number 80 is coming from jujus miss Schuster.
spk_0 So Travis Hunter has to run around all this traffic and get a try and tackle jujus miss Schuster before he gets to the end zone.
spk_0 However, what happens when the ball is snap is Devon Hamilton and Devon Lloyd are reading the action of the Creed Humphrey the center.
spk_0 If he goes out to block Devon Hamilton, Devon Lloyd drops in the coverage.
spk_0 If he goes to block Devon Lloyd Devon Hamilton drops in coverage.
spk_0 I think on this play both guys ended up just dropping, which I think is hilarious.
spk_0 But you can see that Devon Lloyd has vision on Patrick Mahomes.
spk_0 He has been one of the best spot droppers in the NFL this year at the linebacker spot because he's so good at reading the quarterbacks eyes, which something he did at Utah a lot.
spk_0 And we're going to get to Devon Lloyd later on up in our upon further review.
spk_0 But he gets to this play and he's able to jump in front of this window because Patrick Mahomes is thinking throw the shallow route because he's he saw the blitz early and Lloyd jumps back out.
spk_0 He makes the play and he takes off for a 99 yard pick six.
spk_0 It was one of the most incredible moments as a Jaguar's fan because that never happens to Jaguars.
spk_0 You never 99 yard pick six the best quarterback in the game.
spk_0 But it was a great call by Anthony Campanelli who's been really good and in Devon Lloyd is having a defensive player of a year type of campaign.
spk_0 Yeah, I mean, that's the kind of play that.
spk_0 It's pure gameplay. I mean, it's purely I know what they like to go to in the low red and I have a call that can bait him.
spk_0 And the fact that it got you know, excuse so well, this testament to just how Devon Lloyd's been playing man.
spk_0 I mean, he has been possessed all season long for picks now in five games.
spk_0 He was one of those guys coming out college, which is like if he doesn't work out in the NFL, I have no clue how to scout because his tape was so good.
spk_0 He had enough traits. It's like if he if he's not good in the NFL, I don't know what the hell I'm doing with linebackers.
spk_0 Well, we're sitting here and the guys probably front runner for defense player in the year through the first five weeks.
spk_0 Taken things away that are not supposed to be the taken things away that are supposed to be there.
spk_0 That's what the best linebackers on earth. You know, people think linebackers, they think, oh, that guy hits hard or you know, blah blah blah blah.
spk_0 No, it's the brainy ones that drive you crazy. It's the brainy ones who are just athletic enough to ruin anything.
spk_0 And I remember playing a guy like Luke Keekley. We ran middle screen in Carolina and Keekley was at the point of contact for I was because he sees it.
spk_0 This guy Devon Lloyd studies, okay, because they ran this play a couple of weeks ago and Travis Kelsey caught a touchdown between two defenders.
spk_0 And that's what you expect out of 87. You can throw him a contested ball. He's gonna put his back to one defender and strong arm and out of the other guys.
spk_0 Hands go figure Patrick saw the same thing Travis did, but Devon saw it before everybody saw it.
spk_0 And that's what makes it the JP split book. Well done, dude.
spk_0 All right, so in this next one, I'm an e-couse up a little bit. This is Justin Herbert Bradley Boseman and what being hot means.
spk_0 Yeah, all right. So Harry, our producer Harry, can you play the audio of what happens before this play? It is empty protection. Like it shows to your second and five.
spk_0 Harry.
spk_0 All right, you hear Justin Herbert immediately scream no right before the ball is snap.
spk_0 But what happens and what's really important is what happens before Justin Herbert said yells no because on this play, he's pointing at Frankie Louvue and saying, we are hot if he's blitzing.
spk_0 So he wants the offensive line to slide the other way because he knows that he has the answer if Frankie Louvue blitzes because he is the most dangerous off ball blitzer for Washington.
spk_0 You prepare for a guy like Frankie Louvue in your game prep and you have plays designed to beat him as the hot blitzer.
spk_0 Bradley Boseman sees like you see, like you see the center Bradley Boseman center. He sees Justin Herbert pointing to Frankie Louvue.
spk_0 And instead of not thinking, oh, that's our hot guy. He's going, oh, you're pointing to Frankie Louvue.
spk_0 Get to five.
spk_0 Get the one.
spk_0 Get five down guys blocked. You got Louvue here, who's a known rusher JP. So in our blitz meetings, we're like, we got to know where this sucker is because he can get home.
spk_0 Well, in this instance, you've got four down linemen. You've got the overhang guy with Louvue.
spk_0 And when Herbert tells you we are hot off of him, that is a sigh of relief from the offensive line because now we can get to our, you know, our L whatever it is that your call is sliding Boseman somewhere.
spk_0 In this case, you could totally see given the right guard help with the three technique, three technique, usually a little bit more feisty than the two eyes. So I'm going down block for the left guard.
spk_0 Money block on the left side on the end, you got money on the right side as well. And the right guard can go shoot his gun at this three technique knowing he's got a center in his back pocket.
spk_0 All because when Justin Herbert says we are hot off of four, it tells us that that is Justin Herbert's responsibility.
spk_0 Do not even think about him existing right now. Justin's going to make us right. And I mean, I haven't seen the play, but if Louvue comes here, the left tackle picks up that defensive end.
spk_0 Our guy on the slot down here is going to be booty booty make it open. Okay. And that's the hot throw.
spk_0 You throw it to the defender who is making a decision because his decision dictates your decision. And I apologize for swearing Harry. I said booty. I said naked, but we're talking to the line. We're going to get a little wrong.
spk_0 So that is actually a great point Kyle because Frankie Louvue is actually not the guy who blitzes Justin Herbert is saying let me be hot off of Louvue because he wants them to slide the other way.
spk_0 Because what happens is Mikey Samor still in the slot is actually the guy who ends up blitzing. And what happens when you roll the play is Samor still is going to be the blitzer.
spk_0 And that forces the right guard into a two V one choice. Now in this situation, you're like what what do you do because you got game. And that's why Justin Herbert yells no right before his nap because he's like we got game.
spk_0 I have to try and figure out the answer here. But what happens is the right guard blocks the nickel instead of deron pain. And that is not where you want to go.
spk_0 You want to leave the little guy unblocked because Justin Herbert is 65 to 40, but he can make that guy miss. You're not going to miss. You're not going to make deron pain miss.
spk_0 And what makes this even worse is Tyler Conklin number 83, the guy that Frankie Louvue was defending. He's got a step on him. He's got a step.
spk_0 Lad McConkey is running this option route at the bottom of screen against Bobby Wagner. You are you're thinking if they blocked this correctly.
spk_0 You have Bobby Wagner defending Lad McConkey in the slot. This could be an explosive on second and five. It ends up Justin Herbert has thrown in completion third and five. I think he gets ends up getting sacked on this play.
spk_0 They got to turn they got to give the ball away. It's just one of those moments where you're like this. This is what hot means when you are an empty. If you're hot. That means the quarter. It's the quarterbacks responsibility.
spk_0 You don't don't slide to that guy because that's the quarterbacks job. But instead they slid the other way and it's just a microcosm of what's happened to the chargers this season.
spk_0 And it's also just a perfect explanation of I just walked you through what I would have thought and believed pre snap based on where Louvue was based on where the four down lineman are.
spk_0 Every play in the national football league is like the defense is trying to give the off you know when you got to give your dog a pill and you put it in cheese.
spk_0 So like they're like here take this cheese and I'm like wait there's a pill in there isn't it I don't want to eat that cheese that's not normal cheese and then you know you get a bite of the edge of it and you're like okay we're good hot off of Louvue and then it's like oh my god there's a pill in there and the pill is spinning to the slot.
spk_0 The nickel coming down in your big gap into your point only always block the big guy always block the big guy.
spk_0 So Kyle I have a question for you on this play so that he obviously screams no.
spk_0 Boasman says god damn it I think it's Boasman that says god damn it really happened.
spk_0 How does this ball look a snap?
spk_0 Look that was the one place on the field they did not allow me to play was center because there's a lot there's a lot of stuff going on there at center I was a guard I was a telephone guy you tell me what's going on and I'll make it right.
spk_0 I do not envy centers Mike I don't know how they get this play off but at the end of the day.
spk_0 The snapping is the first thing that has to happen and obviously blocking the big guys is the second thing that has to happen they didn't get that done.
spk_0 So also on this play again second and five when they snap the ball there's like six seconds left.
spk_0 That's what I'm saying like what like what like after a quarterback screams no how is what what what's the communication that the ball just get snapped is he snapping on the no or what's what's going on.
spk_0 They may have they may have already been in their cadence.
spk_0 Okay the hard part is when you're half white 80 what hey we're good we're good we're good 42 42s to Mike okay and now we restart the white 80 some center some guards we've already heard one white 80 whatever the next one is we're going maybe there was some other
spk_0 that's going to be the first time I've heard the fourth communication his bot his muscle memory is like that things coming out again I didn't play center but I've been part of some of these botched cadences botched pre snap communications and there's really never a good explanation for it it's always I thought or I felt well sometimes you're wrong and sometimes thing gets a little haywire.
spk_0 And then on that play the right guard also taps the center and it's like all right it's time to go that's that's it like he's also looking back at Justin Herbert who is still making that call and when he yells no he's tapping him like all right it's time to go we're going like again we're it's ready to go so it's just it's a whole lot of missteps that stem from one just miscommunication on whose hot and what the hot means.
spk_0 You know what you're doing that situation when you don't know you just go five of first five guys that come inside guys that come we're blocking left tackle you're going vertical if somebody comes inside of that edge rusher that's yours and our boys got to get the ball off right tackle you're staying on you know swell up get the get the inside guys and you got a trust of the guy like Justin Herbert can make it happen.
spk_0 All right let's get to my rookie report great playbook JP has always.
spk_0 I'm going to start with cam ward because the Titans won a game and it wasn't because it too many other guys other than cam warden this game his fourth quarter was I was spectacular man I mean it it was everything you'd want from a franchise quarterback three scores now one of them was admittedly a pick for the game.
spk_0 He's a bumble bumble recovery score but he led them to that point it was a tip pass I don't it probably wasn't the best decision if you go back and watch the ultimate too like I don't think it was going to be picked but he was really trying to stuff in a guy who was pretty closely guarded in the end zone but that's also what you have to do and what I think he is what makes me so excited about cam ward given his progression so far given this game is that he's going to be a good guy.
spk_0 He is trying to make plays a lot of quarterbacks a lot of young quarterbacks will get sunk by poor supporting cast they will go into a shell they will get conservative it will look like it's too much for them cam ward's numbers aren't great but it's because the town around him isn't great like 51.8
spk_0 I don't think he's necessarily been inaccurate you know that's Anthony Richardson level numbers he's not Anthony Richardson level accuracy when you watch him on tape the guy still making plays still making throws into tight windows it's just every throw is seemingly a tight window throw but I'm that fourth quarter he had three different throws that I thought were just spectacular one was a drive throw to Calvin Ridley splitting cover to on a post route that was
spk_0 40 plus yards downfield and he didn't have to put air on it he drove drove one to that level football field and that's why a lot of times we talk about arm talent in the pre draft process where does it show up it shows up on that if you had to put air on that throw if you have to throw that like a lead deep ball 40 plus yards out of football field the safety is getting involved you can't there's no window if you can drive it in there the way cam ward did that's a window and it'll expect exactly he had that a throw in that same way
spk_0 drive he's getting hit wheel route to his tight end I believe puts it just right in the bucket on the sideline gets them down to the one yard line and then obviously on the final drive the Calvin Ridley throw is a third down got to have go ball only spot I don't
spk_0 know if there's some spots you could put it that because Calvin Ridley finally won a route but it was in the exact perfect spot to get a big playoff of that so when you watch cam ward and you see the stats and it's not looking good still is more picks and touchdowns just know that like there is still special on a weekly basis it's just going to need time one I still think there are some issues to his game I think getting to second and third reads you still see him behind a little in what you would want ideally
spk_0 but man if you're a Titans fan you got to be excited about this too.
spk_0 Honestly the biggest thing that really sold me on cam ward is last week and I'm going to quote sorry here to keep he said to keep it about we ask he is saying that we we suck and for cam ward to say that and and be able to be that honest and still say like we have to be better and I have to be better.
spk_0 That's a player you can rally around I still do think cam ward got a little bit of inconsistencies like you said we get into the second third read and I think there are times where you really just want him to be like okay just let the play die but you'd rather coach a guy down from that then coach then coach a guy up to trying to get him to be explosive and throwing in a tight windows but he's made a lot of throws and his short time the NFL they're really impressive he has been reckless to a fault in the NFL.
spk_0 But that's a guy that you know with his mentality he's going to want to win a lot of games in Tennessee so they're going to give him a long time and I'm hopeful that he plays well.
spk_0 I hate to compare everything to offensive line but I was there when Trace Smith got drafted to Chicago or Kansas City and I'll tell you this you can't teach talent.
spk_0 You just can't teach talent there were a million things that Andy heck crawled up his ass about technically schematically you know all that stuff but out of the box there are just some guys that have it and cam ward with his arm talent has always got a chance and if you can clean up some of this stuff that you guys are talking about he is going to be a lot of fun to watch for a long time.
spk_0 Now let's get to my other rookie Nick a man worry we finally got to see a four snaps a week one got hurt came back this week and we're probably the only bright spot in the C. O.K.s defense obviously to get 38 points wasn't a great play for them but his play in the slot was in my opinion reminiscent of Kyle Hamilton early office career and now it's one games 39 snaps and we're four three snaps.
spk_0 But what he can do around the line of scrimmage just basically being that bridge between cornerback and weak side linebacker that the nickel positions kind of turned into I was super impressed with because physically the guy was erasing screens left and right and even when it was like a tight end out there trying to block him on a screen or a wide run.
spk_0 He was getting off those blocks and he's 632 27 the guy the guy a decade ago would have been a safety or excuse me would have been a safety for like every team in the NFL no way you would have put this guy as a nickel but that's just kind of where that position has gone because no one plays base anymore and I think he could be what the see hawks need at that position I'm just very excited to see how they treat the secondary once to Von weather spoon comes back because obviously you're on with a spoon whether best.
spk_0 One of the best pickles in the NFL. But he can also play outside I mean get trapped to fifth overall as primarily an outside corner at Illinois that's what he can just a great cover guy on the whole that he's so good in the slot because he's so feisty but like that works on the outside to so I think they have an interesting decision on their hands but I love what I saw from Nick a man worry and what he could be to the Seattle see hawks defense going for.
spk_0 It's so hard to find guys like Nick and me and worry and even when they're going to be lapses I think that it's he was sort of an odd player at South Carolina where like he was this big athletic freak of a player but also felt like he really kind of struggled inside the box as like in terms of his play in his eyes in the box but when you have him out at nickel when you have him playing in space he reestings a lot quicker and that stood out at South Carolina the range and then he's going to be able to get a little bit of a good look at the back of the box.
spk_0 And then the ability to diagnose from space from depth is really what stood out instead of being closer to the action and so I think if you have him at nickel where you can kind of play him in a lot of different ways like you said it's like Kyle Hamilton not saying that he is going to be Kyle Hamilton but it's very similar to how Mike McDonald McDonald used him.
spk_0 I think you have a good problem in Seattle with their secondary where you have Devon weather spoon you have email worry you have whatever's going on at the second corner spot it feels like reep rule it might be on the way out but Josh Joe was played well it whatever they choose there and then you have your your Kobe Bryant and Julian love it safety you have a good problem at secondary an email war is a part of that.
spk_0 Alright yeah Nickman worries just a very excited to see how he develops because you don't get guys with his physical tools a lot it doesn't there's only a handful that exists ever and to do what he you know to look like that this early on not say he's going to do it every single week but like you know he's going to be a guy that's difficult to throw those wide screens to throw those easy lay ups that a lot of teams will have to do no days.
spk_0 And then can happen yes Nickman worry we're going to do those jerseys every week.
spk_0 That's it for sure let's get to the upon for the review but first we take quick break breakfast.
spk_0 Alright our upon view this week is going to be a little bit different we are going to say out a statement and then we're going to say it's either confirmed which means we whole heartily believe it it stands which means you know we just don't know or we're over turning it.
spk_0 Where we're saying no it's wrong that statement we completely disagree with so first one here on the docket the Ravens the one in four Ravens are cooked.
spk_0 I it's tough I I actually think I'm going to overturn this one.
spk_0 I think I'm overturning it because if you look at their schedule once they get back from the buy it is incredibly incredibly winnable you're I can read it out for it let me read out so it's airs dolphins Vikings Brown's jets bangles Steelers bangles Patriots Packers Steelers so it's like Packers is probably only team that's like guaranteed playoffs and then two Steelers to basically make up the ground you need to make up against the only of them.
spk_0 So we're going to be able to do a competition in the division.
spk_0 Yeah and I think even without Nondi Metabee game who is not coming back for the season that is going to be a major loss in the middle of that defense but as long as you have the Mar Jackson like the offense has been volatile and still score 30 points a game with the Mar Jackson as their quarterback.
spk_0 I think they're going to find a way to outscore a lot of guys especially if once they get Patrick card and Jackson back that off it is still going to be very good and if you can get this team playing with the lead maybe it'll help I also think that the Ravens defense has always done better in the second half of the season they took the second half of the season last year
spk_0 then to really turn around Mike McDonald helped that defense turn around the second half of his first year before everything kind of gel together so I'm going to hesitantly overturn this one but I do want to see what this team looks like when the market's back after the buy.
spk_0 I'm going to take this one to commercial break because it needs more time for us to look at it and look you said this offense you know they can play the Ravens team they can play with a lead yeah they can take a lead.
spk_0 They got a lead early in the season and we saw what happened against Buffalo and obviously some bad hops there for this Baltimore defense but that was their shot Ronnie Stanley Patrick card Lamar Jackson there can reason a milk card and for those of you who are born in past 2000 if you're on a milk card that means you're missing and there are guys on the defensive side of the ball who have been perennial stunts for this team.
spk_0 They need to wake up a little bit because you're going to blink it's going to be four weeks down the road Lamar still going to be trying to figure out the hamstring Stanley still not going to be 100% Patrick card being out of your offense changes everything if you watch the Ravens they use the full back okay Patrick cards a big part of that offense if he's not in there.
spk_0 I have real concerns about this Ravens team I have been amazed at the run that they've had where every year they are in that elite conversation it's not that they have different guys now it's just that we see how hard it is to stretch winning over the course of a decade over a half a decade and the Ravens are dealing with it now Mattabike being out is massive for that defensive front.
spk_0 I'm going to say it stands for this reason they're expectation wasn't just playoffs they could sneak in they could go eight and three after the buy go to nine and eight and sneak in the last wild card I don't think that's out of the rental possibility this team isn't getting to the Super Bowl and you see it.
spk_0 They're just not they're not good enough they're not good enough defensive defense is a disaster right now the offensive line if Rodney Stanley is banged up it is not good enough either.
spk_0 March actually going to be under a ton of pressure behind a guard position is as we've said they're biggest weakness and looks like it through the first five weeks this season and that was the goal that was this season that was the town you had on this roster heading into week one that was the goal and it's not going to it's just I don't think it's going to happen only if he's great but when you are the seventh seed or the sixth seed trying to roll through.
spk_0 The playoffs it just ain't going to be good for this Ravencene so I hope can say it stands because of that they're not done in terms of making a playoffs but I do think they make it in the Super Bowl this season.
spk_0 Alright next one here this one was yours Kyle coaches should never hit players Jonathan again and obviously got a little in a tiff he had a little upset at a midi Mercado after the new and well physical on the sideline gimilo punch gesture like a little slap.
spk_0 That's how you that's how you used to hang up a phone in the 1990s when you were pissed off at the person on the other side the way he just slam it.
spk_0 Look dude we always say it's a sign of the times when you start passing the play calling responsibilities around right there's a few red flags in the national football league that are like I can see it the ball came.
spk_0 Maybe I was going to you know the volcano's going to wrap slapping players dropping the ball at the at the goal line blowing leads there's a hurricane coming in Arizona and you can feel it I can feel it and the big thing is keep your hands off me okay I had a coach by the name of Aaron Krohmur and I reference him often Aaron Krohmur was a former player.
spk_0 And it kind of blurs the line between coach and player when you've got a former player talking to you and I know again and play the game as well but.
spk_0 Aaron Krohmur when I was a rookie he used to come over there and do a temperature check with me when when our defenses on the field and sometimes there would be a drive he didn't like from me he didn't like the way I was blocking and he'd be like I need you to put your hands on the guy well one time he came up.
spk_0 And he hemmed me up I was like on the bench like I had a dip in like head down and he hemmed me up and I looked up immediately and I jumped up at him and grabbed him by the scruff of his shirt and I was like he goes quit hitting guys like that and I got up and hemmed him and I said I'm hitting him like that and he goes that's what I'm talking about and I was like oh was an intentional.
spk_0 An intentional prodding by Aaron Krohmur that's not what that was that's not what we saw in Arizona but we saw in Arizona was a head coach boiling over taking much understood frustration out on a player that ain't good I don't like it at all there's only a handful of ways you should be able to put a thank you Harry those are brilliant transitions of the tweet slapping my helmet in a good way out of boy 75 that season burn of block big guy.
spk_0 To to hand down slap on the shoulder pad before I before a game that's a gym barbos special and then the old supportive bunch love get out there kid big play chest push to hands when the DB gets a pick he runs to the sideline he gets near pointed by the coach and they almost both fall over that's awesome I love that but when you walk up to me and you put your hands on me in any other way than that.
spk_0 You better expect to see me on the bus in the facility parking lot when we get back to the facility and the buses drop us off I know where your meeting room is you know where my locker is we can handle this.
spk_0 You never want to challenge somebody like that or embarrass somebody like that.
spk_0 I'm also going to upheld up hold this I'm going to confirm it whatever we got to do to like I infatically agree here.
spk_0 What emotion do you think does Jonathan Ganon think he's bringing out of emery deep mucca day's not already feeling in that moment I think the context of having Paris Johnson will Hernandez both consoling him as he's walking up.
spk_0 At boiling over at em what emotion do you think you're going to get out of him by riling by riling him up and like and and hit them like that what what do you think is going to happen you think is magically going to just make everything better it's going to magically bring back the fumble that he dropped he already knows is going to be on every highlight every low light real he's going to be on sports center for all the wrong reasons and he's also not a guaranteed starter he might have.
spk_0 He's almost lost his job with that play what emotion do you think you are bringing out of him by doing that there's just there's no reason for it there's you can be angry you can be angry at a player without putting your hands on them but in that moment he doesn't need like he doesn't need you to be angry at him the score is 21 to 6 like you cannot let this boy over and let that become the reason that you lose.
spk_0 It did the score ended up being 22 21 and they fell apart because of that play.
spk_0 It was there was no emotion I mean he was it was a lot of emotional control it was just rage it was just it was not anything productive that he was trying to do what it was and Kyle you're going to hate this but I feel like Jonathan Ganon and then Johnson have the same energy I feel like they have very similar energy.
spk_0 You're right you got a little you know if I put the over under a half for striking a player I would have to do a little bit of something for both sides.
spk_0 Those are your front runners right now they just have like a quiet Liam Cohen want to hit somebody too.
spk_0 Oh he's he's so the boiling point coaches you can give us see it because it's a face it's red every time Trevor runs above the line of scrimmage and throws the ball or takes a delay a game and it's just like all right one more delay a game Trevor's getting the egg by his hair at some point of this day.
spk_0 All right next to five further review the lions don't miss their coordinators.
spk_0 I am going to uphold this I have always I said before the season maybe the real person behind the juice for that offense wasn't been Johnson but it was Dan Campbell.
spk_0 Dan that team is Dan can't that offense is Dan Campbell's offense he is the one who has all the ideas not all the ideas but he is the one who sets the foundation for the offense.
spk_0 Spin Johnson adds all the pillars he adds all it's like building house he adds the pillars he adds some of the other extra stuff that you might see on a really nice house.
spk_0 Dan Campbell's the foundation regardless of who is building up on that foundation if you have a good foundation you're going to win a lot of football games that house is not going anywhere for a long time.
spk_0 Now I think the lions it is a testament to their culture and to their head coach and the talent on that team that they are still one of the best teams in football with one of the best offense is in football you know they're they're still going to end up giving up big plays on defense because of how much man covers they play and they currently have rock you sin playing corner but this team is always going to be in it because of their head coach and because of the promotion that they have had from within.
spk_0 Dude it's the culture you said it's the guys they bring into the building and Brad Holmes is this big a part of this is anybody I mean you identify people that are our butt kickers see here I caught myself you identify people that are butt kickers you get them in the building and you put them around other alphas and watch what happens when you're biggest this takes nothing away from the offensive line when the biggest alpha in your offense is your receiver you're in a really good place.
spk_0 I mean it can you can be two different things if you're biggest office receiver you could be in trouble but if you're in Detroit.
spk_0 When you've got these young guys on the offensive line proving themselves mixed with veterans who have been there for a decade you've got a quarterback who's not phased by anything you've got a head coach who knows exactly what he has in his football team.
spk_0 You're going to be in a really good spot and I would say the ruling on the field stands touchdown Detroit Lions Dan Campbell draws up another winner and look I get credits Johnny Morton too for just in the preseason how many questions rest John Martin you know tongue in cheeks sarcastic about the fact that the boy wonder was there anymore Ben Johnson.
spk_0 And John Morton said I'm going to run the offensive Dan Campbell wants to run and that's what we're going to run and oh boy it's working it's working you know Anakin Skywalker it's working it's working that's the Lions did sometimes it just pays to have good players particularly up front and a quarterback who can see the game and understands the why and a receiver who's willing to dig somebody out make a tough catch over the middle.
spk_0 Guy and James Williams you can literally run by everybody you got a really great blend of things in Detroit it's going to be that defensive side of the ball that determines whether or not they can make a run at the party.
spk_0 Yeah I think you have to say a stance right now I think defensively with what Aaron Glendz doing like they may they may be doing better but offensively I think just TBD an offense we'll see how they do.
spk_0 Down the stretch this season if they can continue to innovate continue to stay at the leading edge of the curve without Ben Johnson but as stands right now it's just like Dan Campbell and the talent that they put together this roster and like the leaders they put together in this roster I think is the really the big thing that sticks out as that.
spk_0 Their culture is is you know culture is kind of a symbiotic relationship you say it all you want if you don't have guys who will live it you're not going to have the results they have brought in guys that live it and so you have so many leaders on this football field that gosh them is to be this looks like the same team this looks like the team we thought we would get last year when they were fully healthy and that's awesome to see for Detroit.
spk_0 Real quick before we get off the Detroit a couple of things I do want shout out hang freely offensive line coach.
spk_0 The fact that they have been able to keep the beat going on for that offensive line without outside of week one like the beat is rolled on for the offensive line and it's a shout out to hang freely and second thing I think or according to Tom Pillissaro this morning.
spk_0 Around against the
spk_0 if they are seven-karat gold or whatever,
spk_0 is in the gotta have a situation
spk_0 in the conference championship.
spk_0 They will find a way to get to the conference championship
spk_0 based on how they score points.
spk_0 Do they have the right answers schematically?
spk_0 And that's where the Ben Johnson stuff
spk_0 would have come into play.
spk_0 But this team, the floor is extremely high
spk_0 because of their offense
spk_0 because of the guys they brought in the building
spk_0 and great tip of the cap to Hank Freiley as well.
spk_0 They have a nice stretch coming up here.
spk_0 Chiefs, Bucks, Vikings, Commanders, Eagles.
spk_0 We'll find out a lot about Detroit Lions
spk_0 over the next four weeks, five weeks there.
spk_0 All right, next one here.
spk_0 The bangles to change quarterbacks.
spk_0 I'm just gonna start confirmed.
spk_0 We all can, I think we're all gonna confirm this.
spk_0 No one wants to see Jake Brown taking over Snap.
spk_0 Jabba wins.
spk_0 Hey, you know, that's the thing is they're not out of it.
spk_0 They're not out of it.
spk_0 Why not go,
spk_0 what will it take to get James Winston from New York?
spk_0 They have no intention to play James Winston.
spk_0 Sixth.
spk_0 Why not?
spk_0 My thing with James is,
spk_0 James is also kind of admitting that you are out of it.
spk_0 You're just ready to have some fun.
spk_0 Because James Winston with Jamar Chase at T Higgins
spk_0 probably gonna throw 50 touchdowns.
spk_0 He's also gonna throw 80 interceptions.
spk_0 That's an asses and seats move.
spk_0 Yes, you were just trying to get,
spk_0 you're trying to make sure Jamar Chase and T Higgins stay happy
spk_0 and getting targets and you're making sure
spk_0 that people are still excited about this offensive.
spk_0 You're like, oh, you know, it looks good.
spk_0 Just wait until Joe Burrow gets back.
spk_0 Right now, they don't have anything to going for them.
spk_0 So I think Browning, it's kind of run its course a little bit.
spk_0 But I guess the big thing is who do you go get?
spk_0 Yeah, I mean, I am not going and getting Kirk cousins.
spk_0 Just absolutely not.
spk_0 Do a flow.
spk_0 No, thank you.
spk_0 I'm not kidding, Shadour either.
spk_0 I mean, James Winston's the best, most gittable,
spk_0 most palatable, they're like,
spk_0 but most, what's the word I'm trying to think of?
spk_0 It fits what they want to do.
spk_0 Let's just sling it.
spk_0 Just sling it like it fits their talent.
spk_0 It's the best fit.
spk_0 There you go.
spk_0 So if outside of that, I'm not like putting Mike White in there.
spk_0 You know, I'm not going to one of their backups,
spk_0 but it's just unfortunate that this is what we got to sit
spk_0 through as the Bengals right now.
spk_0 All right, what I'm doing upon the Bengals is I'm contacting
spk_0 anybody that's ever been in contact with Josh MacKown
spk_0 or Kevin O'Connell.
spk_0 And I'm saying, complete order back for me
spk_0 because I know that everybody that goes in there,
spk_0 it's like drinking out of the waters of Lake Minnetonka.
spk_0 You've watched away your sins.
spk_0 Okay, and we've seen it time to time again now.
spk_0 All right, get one of those guys.
spk_0 Get in O'Connell disciple.
spk_0 Somebody's been touched by MacKown.
spk_0 We don't necessarily need to go that far back.
spk_0
spk_0 What would you say coaches can touch you
spk_0 if it's in support?
spk_0 Okay, yes, supportly touched.
spk_0 All right, next one here.
spk_0 The Eagles offense can be fixed.
spk_0 I am going to, I'm going to say stands.
spk_0 I'm not going to confirm it, but I'm going to say stands.
spk_0 I think it can be fixed largely because the biggest fix
spk_0 is getting land in Dickerson back healthy.
spk_0 Because I think that changes a lot.
spk_0 I mean, Dickerson went out in the second or third drive
spk_0 of the Eagles game and everything fell apart.
spk_0 But their biggest issue right now is they don't have an identity.
spk_0 They don't, the stuff that used to work for the Eagles
spk_0 no longer works.
spk_0 The thing that they did so well is a force teams
spk_0 to ask questions when they are in too high.
spk_0 If you're going to stay in too high to defend the explosive pass,
spk_0 can you defend the run?
spk_0 Not only would say quam Barkley,
spk_0 but with Jalen Hertz as a design runner.
spk_0 Now you're not going to break the glass
spk_0 on the Jalen Hertz run game.
spk_0 I don't think that's going to happen
spk_0 because he has got an injured before
spk_0 and you want to make sure he is ready for the playoff run
spk_0 that they are eventually going to go on.
spk_0 But you got to find a way to be more efficient
spk_0 when you're facing too high and you're facing lighter boxes.
spk_0 They have not punished light boxes like they have seasons before.
spk_0 Does that mean going to the RPO gimmicky stuff?
spk_0 It probably does because that has worked for the Eagles before
spk_0 and it worked for the first part of the game against the Broncos.
spk_0 But I think they still have to be able to run the ball
spk_0 and finish the game.
spk_0 That is their identity.
spk_0 And if they can't do that, then maybe yeah, they can't fix it.
spk_0 But right now I'm going to say stands
spk_0 until we get landed diggers and back healthy and see what happens.
spk_0 I'm going to say we need to go to commercial break
spk_0 and get more information because as you have so eloquently
spk_0 put a lot of their issues are up front
spk_0 and it has to do with health and that takes time.
spk_0 It depends on how healthy they are at the end
spk_0 when the games start to matter and they all matter.
spk_0 But you know which ones I'm talking about.
spk_0 And I'll just say I'm going to stay off of this
spk_0 and say I told you I didn't get to happen
spk_0 if the old line's not healthy and that's about it.
spk_0 I'm a sailverturned.
spk_0 I don't think it can be fixed to the degree we saw last year, right?
spk_0 When the Super Bowl championship game
spk_0 where they were so dominant, I just don't think
spk_0 the blue, like what Kellen Moore did last year,
spk_0 what they were doing as an offense
spk_0 really only works when you have an utterly dominant run again
spk_0 in my opinion.
spk_0 Like you don't have that and it just isn't going to be
spk_0 even if Landon Dickerson comes back.
spk_0 I don't think he's going to ever be like fully healthy
spk_0 to the guy we saw last year.
spk_0 And obviously McCuy Beckton is walking through that door either.
spk_0 And honestly, like the way just injuries work,
spk_0 like you'll probably get more unfortunately
spk_0 through the Philadelphias.
spk_0 And say, Kuan Barkley has a knee injury
spk_0 that he's hampering himself that just came out this week.
spk_0 So it's like that team isn't walking,
spk_0 that running game isn't walking through that door.
spk_0 So then everything that was predicated off
spk_0 that is just going to take a step back.
spk_0 So yeah, they're not going to be a terrible offense.
spk_0 You're never going to be terrible offense.
spk_0 You're too talented to be a terrible offense.
spk_0 But it ain't going to be the unit that won the Super Bowl.
spk_0 And I think that's the biggest thing is that
spk_0 you're facing some units now that are dominant
spk_0 whether it's the Detroit Lions team
spk_0 that we just talked about, this box offense
spk_0 and how they look, the Packers and what they've been,
spk_0 you're facing a much tougher stretch of teams
spk_0 that I don't think the offense can be fixed to that degree.
spk_0 All right, last one that we'll get out of here
spk_0 on for the review.
spk_0 Linebackers have the hardest transition
spk_0 to the NFL of any position.
spk_0 I am going to, this is what I'm going to say is stance
spk_0 because playing linebackers really hard
spk_0 in the NFL right now.
spk_0 With all the Shanahan and McVeigh clones running around,
spk_0 doing all the boot action and all the play
spk_0 asked stuff over the middle of the field.
spk_0 You're getting high load to absolute oblivion.
spk_0 It's so hard to be an instant impact player
spk_0 in the NFL linebacker, which is why guys
spk_0 at Carson Swaychinger are really cool
spk_0 because they are instant impact players.
spk_0 But you think about a guy like Devon Lloyd
spk_0 who was actively trying to be replaced.
spk_0 The Jaguar's tried replacing Devon Lloyd multiple times
spk_0 in his career.
spk_0 They tried, they draft the Chad Mooma.
spk_0 That same year with the attention of potentially him
spk_0 being the next Devon Lloyd replacement.
spk_0 Then you kept adding guys that linebacker spot early.
spk_0 So the fact that it's come around late for him,
spk_0 this is something that we have seen in linebackers recently.
spk_0 You think about Jamie Assurewood for the Jets.
spk_0 You think about guys like, you think about a lot of guys
spk_0 in the NFL at linebacker who really have sort of turned
spk_0 it around once the game slows down.
spk_0 Once you really get that game to slow down,
spk_0 it looks a lot different because everything is so fast.
spk_0 Windows that you think you could close at the college level
spk_0 are now open in the NFL because you have guys
spk_0 like Patrick Mahomes who can get any pass in any window.
spk_0 So I think it is one of, I think it's,
spk_0 I argue it's the most difficult transition,
spk_0 position transition to one defense.
spk_0 And I argue it's one of the most difficult positions
spk_0 transition to in the NFL.
spk_0 Take a look at how many linebackers.
spk_0 Okay, so I agree with you.
spk_0 Linebacker is really hard.
spk_0 I wouldn't say that it is the hardest,
spk_0 but I will notice this about linebackers.
spk_0 The really good ones in the NFL are really old.
spk_0 And there's a reason for that because just like quarterbacks
spk_0 transitioning from college that have been
spk_0 to four universities that have started for six years,
spk_0 they've seen the game and you can't really fool them
spk_0 on the mental aspect.
spk_0 So I think about guys like Wagner and so many
spk_0 of these great linebackers that have been playing 12, 15 years,
spk_0 it didn't feel like that for them to year one.
spk_0 I mean, it's like playing Frogger.
spk_0 Okay, there's, you know, there's a million things
spk_0 you can get hit by.
spk_0 You're just trying to get across the road safely.
spk_0 I think it's a good conversation,
spk_0 but defensive tackle has to be hard.
spk_0 Just from a physical standpoint,
spk_0 I think about the offensive line.
spk_0 Now the best player you played maybe once
spk_0 in your college career is over you every play.
spk_0 When he's tired, they bring another guy in.
spk_0 He's he's coming to you're not involved on every tackle
spk_0 or every coverage element as the linebacker.
spk_0 You are involved every play as a down guy.
spk_0 So I'll throw my alignment in the ring
spk_0 for this hardest transition conversation.
spk_0 I'm gonna say stands just because how many guys you've seen,
spk_0 we talked about obviously quarterbacks
spk_0 probably up there in this conversation.
spk_0 And we say, we talk about Sam Darnold
spk_0 and Baker Mayfield and how it's taken them
spk_0 as long as it has to really become franchise quarterbacks.
spk_0 But linebacker in recent years has had a lot of similar guys.
spk_0 You've had guys like Devandre Campbell
spk_0 turn into an all pro in like year six.
spk_0 You've had Zach Bond turn into an all pro
spk_0 on his second contract.
spk_0 Divine Diablo this year is a guy who looks like
spk_0 a completely different guy in his fifth year
spk_0 playing the position Drew Trankwell for the chiefs.
spk_0 Second contract he gets.
spk_0 It's a tiny contract all of a sudden he looks like
spk_0 a pro ball that's linebacker.
spk_0 It's just a position that with so much
spk_0 that offense they're throwing at you nowadays.
spk_0 It's so different than how the game is played
spk_0 20 years ago linebacker where you were basically
spk_0 playing in a phone booth, you're either going straight
spk_0 forward or straight back.
spk_0 It's like it was that was it.
spk_0 Now you are lateral.
spk_0 You are every single area of that football field
spk_0 basically has to be covered by linebackers
spk_0 and they're throwing motions at you.
spk_0 They're throwing shifts at you.
spk_0 You got to do so much.
spk_0 And if you are not up to speed, if you're thinking,
spk_0 you're not playing fast and you're not playing the position
spk_0 how it needs to be played.
spk_0 And so with the guys who have seen it all,
spk_0 I mean Devandre Abelow was three year started, right?
spk_0 Before getting now the key turned over to him in Atlanta.
spk_0 And now what he looks like in there.
spk_0 So it's definitely a experience based position
spk_0 that they're under attack by design.
spk_0 Well, offense coordinators are trying to make life
spk_0 as hard as they possibly can on linebackers.
spk_0 That's kind of the whole point here.
spk_0 So yeah, I'm going to say stance, stance from it.
spk_0 All right, there's our upon for the reviews.
spk_0 Those are Tuesday edition of
spk_0 really quenching.
spk_0 Did you guys hear the shout out on the broadcast on Friday night?
spk_0 OK, I heard it.
spk_0 All right.
spk_0 So now that's OK.
spk_0 So I got to call a game this past Friday night,
spk_0 Delaware hosted Western Kentucky.
spk_0 It was a lot of fun.
spk_0 Turns out it happens a lot faster than you think in the booth,
spk_0 particularly with the hurry up offenses.
spk_0 You get all these notes down.
spk_0 I got my bullets here.
spk_0 I got like eight pages of notes on these guys
spk_0 that I was taking.
spk_0 And then you know, you get to say one percent of it.
spk_0 It's good.
spk_0 Either the rest talking to the balls on the ground,
spk_0 they're ready to go play another play.
spk_0 But Mike was texting me during the game.
spk_0 And I'm like, you're going to get your guns on the fourth,
spk_0 on that fourth down call.
spk_0 And then it reminded me because they ran up,
spk_0 they ran up a fly sweep action.
spk_0 One play, they outplayed the defense.
spk_0 And then they went under center again, and they ran cubie sneak.
spk_0 And I said, just like my guy, JP Acosta says on push in the pile,
spk_0 Evergate offense has a play and a punch and a counter punch.
spk_0 I'm glad I got you guys involved on the broadcast.
spk_0 I look forward to doing it again in a week and a half.
spk_0 Stay tuned.
spk_0 Maybe we'll get a hitting streak going for a given PTP shot out.
spk_0 Let's make that happen.
spk_0 Let's see.
spk_0 Let's get Call on more broadcasts.
spk_0 Let's give them calling more games because that was awesome.
spk_0 We will see you guys tomorrow.
spk_0 We'll be back doing our tears list.
spk_0 Thanks so much for tuning in.
spk_0 Until next time, keep pushing.
