spk_0 There you go. We're cooking with gas!
spk_0 Welcome to On the Ball with Rick Buker.
spk_0 Here's your host.
spk_0 My son did a little Rick Buker.
spk_0 Rick Buker.
spk_0 This is On the Ball on the United Weekass Network and I am Rick Buker.
spk_0 You can see me on FS1 and hear me on Fox Sports Radio.
spk_0 Coming in May, you will be able to read me again in the form of my third book.
spk_0 This one on the value of being coachable.
spk_0 The secret to how legendary performers reach their highest potential.
spk_0 Stay tuned for when you can pre-order your copy.
spk_0 You can also follow me on X, the former Twitter, Instagram, Threads, and Blue Sky at Rick Buker.
spk_0 I'm a lot of places, but there's only one place you can hear me talking about story angles and perspectives
spk_0 that you are not likely to find anywhere else, primarily but not exclusively involving the NBA.
spk_0 And that is here.
spk_0 Okay, it has been a while since I posted a new episode of On the Ball and I apologize for that.
spk_0 Obviously you've probably seen that it's not like I've been sloughing, but rather busy putting out other podcasts.
spk_0 A second one, Full Court Passport with co-host Boston Knockbar.
spk_0 If you haven't seen or heard it, check it out.
spk_0 Visually on nofilter.net or on YouTube on the United We Cast channel.
spk_0 And audio wherever you're getting on the ball.
spk_0 And let me know if Full Court Passport is not appearing in your usual podcast platforms or on your usual podcast platforms,
spk_0 and I will get it remedied.
spk_0 Now, there can always be hiccups starting a new show and proper distribution is sometimes one of them.
spk_0 That's why I ask.
spk_0 I'm also doing a third show.
spk_0 This one with co-host Brendan Haywood, former Tar Heel, champion with the Dallas Mavericks,
spk_0 color commentator on both college and NBA broadcast this season.
spk_0 Full Court Passport is all about international basketball.
spk_0 The foreign stars in the NBA, past and present, the Americans playing overseas,
spk_0 and the young up and coming foreign talent that you may one day see in the NBA.
spk_0 We hope to tell you all about the next Victor Women Yama or Nicola Yokic,
spk_0 well before they get their name called by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver,
spk_0 or in the case of a Yokic, the second round picks Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum.
spk_0 But on the ball is still going to be just me.
spk_0 Tackling topics or giving perspectives, as I say, that you're not likely to find anywhere else.
spk_0 And so I want to start with the Golden State Warriors and Jonathan Kaminga,
spk_0 finally signing the team friendly, trade friendly deal that the Warriors have had on the table for pretty much the entire summer.
spk_0 Yes, they sweetened it by a couple of million dollars for the first year.
spk_0 But that was, as I see it, a face saving gesture for the agent,
spk_0 who couldn't come back to his client and say that he didn't get anything out of the stalemate
spk_0 and all the uncertainty and anxiety that I'm sure it produced for Kaminga all summer long.
spk_0 Normally, these type of deals for a restrictive free agent don't take all summer.
spk_0 They get an offer sheet. The offer sheet is either matched or he's on his way to a new team.
spk_0 Something happens in order to push the envelope.
spk_0 None of that happened with Kaminga.
spk_0 And that's one thing that I hope fans understand.
spk_0 Yes, professional athletes make wads of money.
spk_0 And for NBA players, it is almost always guaranteed that they get all of it
spk_0 once they sign on the dotted line.
spk_0 But the stress of waiting to get that contract to sign.
spk_0 The number being the difference between being comfortable for the rest of their lives
spk_0 or securing the future of themselves and their children,
spk_0 and maybe their children's children, is the same as any of us waiting for a life-changing moment to happen.
spk_0 It doesn't change. If you were sitting there thinking I might have my life taking care of
spk_0 for the rest of my life financially, be secure for the rest of my life
spk_0 and you're waiting for that to happen.
spk_0 And you think it's going to happen. There's a good chance it's going to happen
spk_0 but you're not really a thousand percent sure.
spk_0 That can be some anxiety or it certainly can be anxiety producing.
spk_0 And while some of the media are painting this as some sort of massive win for Kaminga,
spk_0 the deal is essentially what the team wanted all along.
spk_0 It's only one year guaranteed with the team holding the option on the second year.
spk_0 And here's the heart of it with Kaminga and the Warriors.
spk_0 Two things can be true and in this case they are.
spk_0 Kaminga is a good talented player.
spk_0 By all sources that I have, he's also a good guy.
spk_0 And he can be a starter in this league, no question.
spk_0 But he is not a good fit and therefore not a starter on the Warriors.
spk_0 And his hope is to be paid like one.
spk_0 You could argue that even at $22 some million, he is being paid like one.
spk_0 Might be a supporting cast starter but a starter nonetheless.
spk_0 But in this case, with these Warriors, he is simply not ideally suited to be a supporting cast member
spk_0 around Steph Curry, Dremon Green and Jimmy Butler, or at least he hasn't demonstrated that ability to this point.
spk_0 Because it is hard for him to impact the game without the ball in his hands.
spk_0 Or again, I will say it has been.
spk_0 I want to leave the door open for the possibility.
spk_0 Remote as it might seem.
spk_0 And remote as the Warriors are indicating it is because of the contract that they offered him.
spk_0 It's hard to imagine that he is going to be there long term.
spk_0 His skill set is just not built for being a complimentary player, at least not in Golden State system.
spk_0 They need someone who is willing and able to get the ball from the other team via rebounds and steals,
spk_0 who can score with one touch without a dribble, and who is consistent and reliable.
spk_0 As in Steve Curry knows, what he is going to get from Kaminga, Knight in, and Knight out in limited minutes.
spk_0 And that's simply not what Jonathan has been to this point.
spk_0 He shoots less than 30% on 3s from the corners.
spk_0 He was 11th on the team in rebounds, and 18th in steals per 36 minutes.
spk_0 That's balancing out the fact that his minutes may not have not been all that healthy.
spk_0 But if he were playing 36 minutes, this is where he would rank.
spk_0 His efficiency, his productivity for the number of minutes that he gets is not good.
spk_0 Gary Payton, the second, is a more efficient rebounder than Kaminga.
spk_0 Brandon Pajemski is as good of a rebounder per 36 minutes as Kaminga.
spk_0 I just named two guards.
spk_0 Kaminga switches from one forward position to the other.
spk_0 He's 6'8", 210", 15 pounds, 3 inches taller than Pajemski, 6 inches taller than Payton.
spk_0 And has a great vertical.
spk_0 No reason why he can't be a better rebounder than he has been to this point.
spk_0 Now, the takeaways from the Warriors' first preseason game versus the Los Angeles Lakers.
spk_0 As far as Kaminga is concerned, one, Kerr and the Warriors are going to do everything they can to give him a chance to show what he can do.
spk_0 He came in off the bench and was the featured offensive player,
spk_0 sharing the floor with the likes of Pat Spencer, Gary Payton, the second, Buddy Heal and Alhorfer.
spk_0 And Kaminga delivered, had the starter kit of a triple double, 5 points, 4 assists, 6 rebounds, and 15 minutes.
spk_0 The per 36 minutes would look very, very good if he were able to keep that up.
spk_0 And that last category might have been the most important.
spk_0 He was as active on the boards and chasing rebounds or tipping them out as I've ever seen him.
spk_0 The Warriors played through him, they got him in the ball, in the mid post, on the left side of the floor,
spk_0 and he did a nice job of attacking when there was space behind the defender and kicking it when there wasn't.
spk_0 He was decisive, and again, something that we hadn't always readily seen in the past.
spk_0 Kerr then had him play for a stretch with the starters.
spk_0 And while the collective showing was kind of clunky, saved only by Steph being in mid season form,
spk_0 getting the ball and launching deep threes in a nanosecond that hit nothing but net.
spk_0 The ball was barely in his hands.
spk_0 Defender still closing on him, and it's out of his hands gone and nothing but net, ripping the courts.
spk_0 I don't know if he can still reach peak Steph Curry in every facet of the game, but in that aspect, in that facet,
spk_0 he certainly is still capable.
spk_0 And that's one of the things, one of the many things that I will miss when he's no longer around.
spk_0 No one quite hits those kind of shots the way that he does.
spk_0 As I said, the warriors are trying to make this, clearly trying to make this work with Kaminga,
spk_0 trying to whether it's showcasing for a trade, and it is a very trade-friendly deal,
spk_0 but they're trying to make it work.
spk_0 They're trying to give him opportunity, both as either the mainstay in the second unit,
spk_0 or finding a way to contribute with the starters.
spk_0 But you know who else is trying to make it work?
spk_0 Kaminga is too.
spk_0 His role with the first unit is to use his length and athleticism to rebound and defend,
spk_0 and he did that against Lakers, again, about as well as I've seen him.
spk_0 Now granted, it's a preseason game.
spk_0 It's the first of the year for the warriors, excuse me,
spk_0 and the Lakers were not playing LeBron James, Lucodoncic or Austin Reeves.
spk_0 But that could have also been reason for Kaminga not to go hard,
spk_0 and show that he could be a worker bee.
spk_0 And that was not the case.
spk_0 He put the effort and the energy in to do the blue collar work.
spk_0 And I wish I could say with all that, that there is a scenario in which,
spk_0 if Dremon green falters, and his age was very much showing against the Lakers.
spk_0 He started at center, the warriors went small,
spk_0 Dremon started at center against Deandre Aiton,
spk_0 and went one for six, for two points, and three rebounds in 14 and a half minutes.
spk_0 But here's the problem with the idea that Kaminga could slide into that spot,
spk_0 that Dremon may have trouble holding on to,
spk_0 is that Kaminga simply doesn't have the chemistry or the skills to play with staff affected.
spk_0 Dremon still had five assists, I believe, in large part,
spk_0 because of his ability to find staff as staff is working off the ball.
spk_0 But Al Horford, the new acquisition of Late from the Boston Celtics,
spk_0 was the first big off the bench coming in from Moses Moody,
spk_0 and it will be interesting to see as we go forward, who has the bigger role.
spk_0 Horford or Kaminga.
spk_0 Now I believe the warriors, certainly owner Joe Laker,
spk_0 but the warriors I think collectively, would love for it to be Kaminga.
spk_0 But Horford's skill set is just a better fit.
spk_0 He's a three point threat, more so than Kaminga,
spk_0 and his passing is superior.
spk_0 Positionally, probably defense too.
spk_0 What Kaminga showed against the Lakers,
spk_0 could tilt the scales in the other direction when it comes to defensive impact.
spk_0 Both of them showed that they could block shots.
spk_0 Kaminga was, as I said, lively on the boards,
spk_0 in a way that Horford, I think, at this point,
spk_0 is more of a positional or phone booth rebounder.
spk_0 If it comes to his area, he's strong enough,
spk_0 and smart enough to be able to get it.
spk_0 Kaminga, because of his athleticism,
spk_0 should be able to rebound outside of his area.
spk_0 And it's not just a matter of how high you can jump,
spk_0 or how long you reach.
spk_0 It's a matter of anticipation,
spk_0 and being able to cover the floor.
spk_0 Again, Jonathan has the ability to do it.
spk_0 It's just, for one reason or another,
spk_0 sometimes it's instincts.
spk_0 Guys, don't have them.
spk_0 Some guys do.
spk_0 Doesn't come down to size when it comes to instincts.
spk_0 Your ability to be able to track the ball,
spk_0 be able to get a step in the right direction,
spk_0 anticipate where it's going.
spk_0 That is a huge bonus and benefit,
spk_0 and can be the difference maker for someone as a rebounder.
spk_0 The best rebounding guards have that ability.
spk_0 And while Kaminga is not a guard,
spk_0 for the position that he's playing,
spk_0 he's often going to be operating from somewhere
spk_0 other than directly underneath the basket.
spk_0 By the way, let's pour one out for Brony James.
spk_0 In this Lakers Warriors preseason game,
spk_0 only Dalton Kneck played more minutes for the Lakers,
spk_0 and Brony had, as many turnovers as points,
spk_0 five of each in 23 minutes.
spk_0 No one looked more out of their element,
spk_0 and I say that with no joy.
spk_0 It has to suck for the kid,
spk_0 because opponents are seizing on that fact
spk_0 at every opportunity,
spk_0 and just after coming off of a game
spk_0 against the Phoenix Suns,
spk_0 where in spite of what it looked like to most of us,
spk_0 J.J. Reddick praising Brony in terms of looking more comfortable,
spk_0 this game he did not look comfortable at all.
spk_0 And it has to suck for the kid,
spk_0 because opponents are seizing on the fact
spk_0 that he looks out of his element,
spk_0 and they are seizing on it at every opportunity.
spk_0 The Warriors trapped him a couple times as he crossed half-court,
spk_0 and they simply ripped the ball out of his hands.
spk_0 More than once, his teammates looked him off on opportunities
spk_0 to swing the ball to him for a three.
spk_0 Now, I consider this a pivotal year for him,
spk_0 to get on the floor and show that he has
spk_0 at least the potential to be an NBA player,
spk_0 because while he signed a three-year deal,
spk_0 the third year is a team option.
spk_0 And I'd say the clock is ticking on Dalton Knecht as well.
spk_0 All that talk about the rest of the league missing on him
spk_0 has quieted down considerably.
spk_0 This is where the Lakers are.
spk_0 They are, whether they will acknowledge it or not,
spk_0 they are in transition.
spk_0 They are in full transition,
spk_0 and the guys that are on the roster,
spk_0 particularly the young guys,
spk_0 are essentially trying out to see if they should be
spk_0 part of the Lakers squad that goes forward,
spk_0 built around Luka D'Age.
spk_0 When it comes to Dalton Knecht,
spk_0 I have not heard a whisper about them signing him
spk_0 to an extension at this point,
spk_0 and he is extension eligible.
spk_0 And unlike Ronnie, he's the first round pick.
spk_0 Normally, at this point,
spk_0 there's some conversation about whether the two sides
spk_0 plan to go forward.
spk_0 Dalton is a decent shooter,
spk_0 but he struggles to score anywhere,
spk_0 but from beyond the arc,
spk_0 and he remains a liability on defense.
spk_0 And he's 24 years old.
spk_0 Bronny is 21.
spk_0 At 24,
spk_0 I don't know, you certainly has got room to get better,
spk_0 but that generally happens with guys
spk_0 who have tremendous athletic ability
spk_0 and need to get their skills up to par.
spk_0 I don't want to close the door on Dalton getting better
spk_0 by any means,
spk_0 but all of this really depends on what happens
spk_0 with LeBron after this season.
spk_0 And we're going to get to the LeBron situation in a minute.
spk_0 The Lakers may be ready to move on
spk_0 from all the additions that they made
spk_0 that were meant to serve this James family business.
spk_0 That decision on those additions
spk_0 will be made after this season.
spk_0 If they're not already being made.
spk_0 The tap dancing has begun
spk_0 when it comes to the subject of LeBron James' future
spk_0 with the Lakers, by the way.
spk_0 There is no one who is more creative than GM Rob Polinca
spk_0 when it comes to talking
spk_0 as if he is in 100% in support of something
spk_0 or someone without actually committing himself
spk_0 to providing that support.
spk_0 Here's what he had to say on the subject
spk_0 of LeBron's future with the Lakers beyond this season.
spk_0 I think we've talked before.
spk_0 The first thing we want to do in terms of LeBron
spk_0 and his future is just give him absolute respect
spk_0 to choose his story with his family in terms of how many years
spk_0 he's going to continue to play.
spk_0 He's earned that right
spk_0 and he's the best one to talk about that
spk_0 in terms of how many years he'd like to play.
spk_0 But we were very intentional this summer
spk_0 in terms of the pieces we add with Luca and LeBron
spk_0 once LeBron opted in,
spk_0 making sure that they had the necessary pieces around them
spk_0 to be on a really competitive strong team.
spk_0 And we built into that and for that.
spk_0 In terms of the future, obviously, again,
spk_0 with what I started your question with.
spk_0 First things first would be for him to be able to make the decision
spk_0 he wants to in terms of how long he wants to play.
spk_0 We're going to continue to honor and respect that
spk_0 and let him speak into that.
spk_0 You kind of answered that.
spk_0 I just want to put a point out that though,
spk_0 if he was interested in extending beyond this year,
spk_0 are the Lakers interested in having LeBron James as part of the team?
spk_0 Yeah, I think I said before in a previous question,
spk_0 we would love if LeBron's story would be to retire as a Laker.
spk_0 Or that'd be a positive story.
spk_0 Okay, allow me to translate.
spk_0 When it comes time,
spk_0 the Lakers are going to ask LeBron,
spk_0 do you still want to play?
spk_0 And depending on what he says,
spk_0 they will say,
spk_0 this is what we're willing to do.
spk_0 It's your choice.
spk_0 You can do whatever you want.
spk_0 This is what we plan to do with you.
spk_0 This is what we're thinking with Bronnie, etc., etc.
spk_0 You get to choose what you want to do.
spk_0 There's a little bit different,
spk_0 there's a difference between having choices
spk_0 and being able to dictate things.
spk_0 For a very long time,
spk_0 LeBron James has always been able to dictate
spk_0 what he wants,
spk_0 when he wants it,
spk_0 how he wants it.
spk_0 That is not going to be the case
spk_0 with the Lakers going forward.
spk_0 He's going to be allowed to write his story,
spk_0 but the Lakers are the ones
spk_0 that are going to be providing the pen,
spk_0 and the color of the ink,
spk_0 and everything else,
spk_0 and the piece of paper,
spk_0 and how many sentences.
spk_0 There's going to be some control here
spk_0 over exactly what LeBron is going to get,
spk_0 and what he's been going to be able to do,
spk_0 and who he's going to be playing with,
spk_0 going forward.
spk_0 And that's going to be,
spk_0 that's going to be the difficulty here.
spk_0 And I'm sure that LeBron already senses
spk_0 that it's headed in that direction.
spk_0 And there's no reason for the Lakers to be direct now,
spk_0 because there's nothing to gain,
spk_0 and a whole lot to lose,
spk_0 by making it clear,
spk_0 that the tables,
spk_0 if they haven't turned,
spk_0 that the dynamic is different now.
spk_0 There's nothing to be gained
spk_0 from impressing upon him,
spk_0 that he's not as important as he once was.
spk_0 That serves no purpose,
spk_0 and would only piss him off,
spk_0 but pay attention to how Polinka phrased
spk_0 that second question about,
spk_0 would they be interested in keeping him?
spk_0 He said that,
spk_0 yeah, we would like it if LeBron's story was,
spk_0 that he retired a Laker.
spk_0 That would be a positive story.
spk_0 There are just much more forceful ways to say,
spk_0 if the Lakers were indeed interested,
spk_0 keeping LeBron and any cost going forward,
spk_0 saying exactly that,
spk_0 we're gonna do everything in our power
spk_0 to make sure that LeBron James retires as a Laker.
spk_0 This is a much more passive approach to it.
spk_0 Yeah, we hope that LeBron chooses
spk_0 to retire as a Laker.
spk_0 That's the translation,
spk_0 but it's really a choice
spk_0 that LeBron is going to have to make.
spk_0 And why would there be a choice?
spk_0 Well,
spk_0 because the terms and the conditions
spk_0 may not be exactly what LeBron would want going forward.
spk_0 So there is that question.
spk_0 Is the story going to end as nicely as everyone hopes?
spk_0 And again, it's the positive story.
spk_0 It's not about basketball.
spk_0 It's about how do we navigate this
spk_0 so that everybody walks away from it relatively happy?
spk_0 The problem with saying that they're gonna do everything
spk_0 in their power to make sure that LeBron retires
spk_0 as a Laker is that they've then,
spk_0 at some point, I'm gonna have to pony up to do that.
spk_0 Letting LeBron write his story
spk_0 with his family means they are going to present
spk_0 and presumably,
spk_0 Bronny with options contractually.
spk_0 And they can choose to exercise them or not.
spk_0 Now, LeBron, for his part,
spk_0 appears to be creating as much leverage as he possibly can
spk_0 to still have things his way.
spk_0 The Lakers held Donutschich out
spk_0 of the first two preseason games
spk_0 because he played for Slovenia and Eurobasket
spk_0 just a few weeks ago.
spk_0 But he was a full participant
spk_0 in the first team practices of training camp.
spk_0 And at least according to JJ Reddick,
spk_0 that Donutschich looked good, went hard,
spk_0 they just decided we need to be smart with him.
spk_0 Okay.
spk_0 LeBron, meanwhile, showed up for the first day of training camp
spk_0 with nerve irritation in a glute muscle.
spk_0 That was the report.
spk_0 And according to Reddick,
spk_0 he is on his own workout program.
spk_0 LeBron is.
spk_0 But is not doing anything with the team
spk_0 and there is no timetable yet for when he will.
spk_0 All of this in this scenario allows LeBron
spk_0 to sort of survey what's going on.
spk_0 And maybe it's the skeptic in me.
spk_0 But anytime I hear of an injury
spk_0 that I've never heard of ever before,
spk_0 it makes me a little suspicious
spk_0 when we don't get more detail in terms of how it happened,
spk_0 how severe it is, what it means.
spk_0 Like a lot of questions around this.
spk_0 A lot of gray area in terms of what the recovery is.
spk_0 And again, not to be a cynic,
spk_0 but this gives LeBron a tremendous amount of control.
spk_0 How injured is he really?
spk_0 Is the question.
spk_0 We don't know.
spk_0 All right.
spk_0 So this allows LeBron to survey what's going on.
spk_0 What the plan is for him.
spk_0 How he's playing, how he's feeling,
spk_0 and then dip in and out of availability,
spk_0 depending on what he wants to do.
spk_0 And I say all this because I've seen other players play
spk_0 this exact card.
spk_0 And so I know that LeBron is familiar with it.
spk_0 Have an injury, particularly when you're not sure
spk_0 exactly where you are with your team
spk_0 and whether you want to stay there or not.
spk_0 Jimmy Butler, great example.
spk_0 Was doing a lot of that.
spk_0 And Miami has done it for the last couple of years in Miami.
spk_0 I could go back to Sam Kassel,
spk_0 or never forget, George Carle saying,
spk_0 I just need Sam to tell me when he's going to be available
spk_0 and when he's not.
spk_0 And I just wish he would tell me in advance,
spk_0 rather than day of the game,
spk_0 whether I'm going to have him or not.
spk_0 So,
spk_0 Lakers in this case have no choice but to go along with it.
spk_0 And I don't have the audio of Reddick's press conference
spk_0 when he talked about LeBron's injury,
spk_0 but it's clear that the team is not charting LeBron's course.
spk_0 He is.
spk_0 And now we have LeBron's post announcing a second decision
spk_0 coming on Tuesday, October 7th.
spk_0 It's a clip,
spk_0 sought on social media.
spk_0 LeBron walks into a gym,
spk_0 sits cross from an older black man already seated,
spk_0 who is not identified,
spk_0 and who I did not recognize.
spk_0 I would have expected Mav Carter or Rich Paul,
spk_0 his agent to be sitting in that chair,
spk_0 and it wasn't either of them.
spk_0 Unless Mav has aged tremendously since I last saw him.
spk_0 And I don't think that's the case.
spk_0 The text on the social media post reads,
spk_0 the decision of all decisions,
spk_0 October 7th, 12 p.m. EST,
spk_0 and then it's followed by a salute emoji and a crown emoji.
spk_0 Now, as a businessman, it's brilliant.
spk_0 There will be 24 hours of speculation,
spk_0 and buzz, and talk show conversation.
spk_0 As he announced, this is his last year.
spk_0 Is it a promotion for Amazon's Prime Day,
spk_0 which he has promoted before?
spk_0 Is it a shoe drop?
spk_0 There's no real way of knowing,
spk_0 because LeBron has always liked creating an air of mystery
spk_0 around whatever he is doing,
spk_0 and he's not at all afraid to toy with his fans' emotions
spk_0 if it comes to that.
spk_0 Which is why,
spk_0 as savvy as it might be from a grab the spotlight,
spk_0 and get the hype train rolling perspective,
spk_0 anything short of it being an announcement,
spk_0 that this will be his last season,
spk_0 is going to come off as unfitting for a basketball icon.
spk_0 The decision of all decisions can't be an ad.
spk_0 That should be reserved for when he announces his retirement,
spk_0 and only for when he announces his retirement
spk_0 at this stage of his career.
spk_0 Not even going back to Cleveland,
spk_0 warrants the decision of all decisions.
spk_0 There's only one left that that fittingly applies to.
spk_0 Exiting Stage Right,
spk_0 the decision to do that,
spk_0 after all these years,
spk_0 that is the decision of all decisions.
spk_0 The uncertainty about what this is about,
spk_0 as much as LeBron fans aren't going to like this,
spk_0 illustrates the difference between LeBron and Michael Jordan,
spk_0 one of many.
spk_0 As successful as LeBron has been as a businessman,
spk_0 Michael Jordan has been far more successful despite,
spk_0 and I would argue because,
spk_0 he maintained a clear line of delineation
spk_0 between his business and basketball.
spk_0 Mike's authenticity and his credibility
spk_0 are what made the line be like Mike so powerful.
spk_0 It wasn't just about who he was as a basketball player,
spk_0 or what he accomplished on the court.
spk_0 It was about his aura, his presence.
spk_0 Mike wasn't a saint by any means,
spk_0 but he never professed to be.
spk_0 He never, ever tried to tell us he was something that he wasn't.
spk_0 When he returned from retirement the first time,
spk_0 he released a simple two-word announcement through his agent.
spk_0 The statement, I'm back.
spk_0 He didn't announce that he would be making an announcement in 24 hours.
spk_0 He just did it.
spk_0 His announced return from a second retirement
spk_0 was delayed by two weeks,
spk_0 but that was because it was originally scheduled for September 11, 2001,
spk_0 and we all know what happened that day.
spk_0 The day that's the day the world trade towers came down.
spk_0 Again, his message was simple.
spk_0 Made the announcement two weeks later,
spk_0 out of respect for the victims of that tragic event.
spk_0 And again, when he did come back,
spk_0 when he did make his announcement, his message was simple.
spk_0 I am returning as a player to the game I love.
spk_0 In all of it, there was never a question about what he meant.
spk_0 You never had to wonder where Jordan's head was at
spk_0 or why he was doing or saying something.
spk_0 Even when he announced his second retirement,
spk_0 he was honest, saying,
spk_0 I never say never, but 99.9%.
spk_0 As in, I'm 99.9% sure that this is it.
spk_0 I'm not coming back again.
spk_0 But he also said,
spk_0 desire is always going to be there.
spk_0 If the desire is not there,
spk_0 the love was never there.
spk_0 And it's desire, as in the desire to compete,
spk_0 which is why he acquiesced to then Wizard's owner,
spk_0 Abe Paulin, to unretire a second time
spk_0 to help the struggling franchise that he was helping run.
spk_0 He didn't come back in order to gain more accolades
spk_0 or any of that.
spk_0 And it should be noted that when he did come back,
spk_0 Jordan signed a two-year, $1 million deal
spk_0 and donated it all of it to the victims of 9-11.
spk_0 He made it clear it wasn't about the money
spk_0 and he backed that up with the contract that he signed.
spk_0 The Wizards for whatever they were,
spk_0 whatever Jordan was,
spk_0 they certainly got their money's worth
spk_0 and then some from him,
spk_0 both with the contract that he signed
spk_0 and the fact that he did not make a dime playing for them.
spk_0 He made it clear that this wasn't adding to his legacy
spk_0 or his bank account.
spk_0 It was playing to help the team that he had watched
spk_0 for a couple years from the executive suite.
spk_0 His actions and his words have always been in perfect alignment,
spk_0 whether you like them or not.
spk_0 It's why the Jordan brand has had such unrivaled lasting power.
spk_0 Now, LeBron almost seems to want us to question
spk_0 or wonder what he's doing or saying all the time,
spk_0 which is great for immediate bounce and marketing and attention.
spk_0 But I'm not so sure it's great for long-term brand integrity.
spk_0 And I will be shocked if his name and promotional power
spk_0 comes anywhere close to Jordan's once LeBron is no longer playing.
spk_0 For now, both he and the Lakers are in a tough spot.
spk_0 I don't care what the numbers or his sick of fans in the media say,
spk_0 he is no longer a superstar.
spk_0 He is now merely a star.
spk_0 His IQ and his size are still going to allow him
spk_0 to carve out a decent looking box score.
spk_0 And also his free reign to duty once when he's on the floor.
spk_0 I don't know if there's ever going to be a point where JJ Reddick says,
spk_0 pass the ball or we're not running that or that's not a good shot,
spk_0 whatever it may be.
spk_0 He still has that carte blanche.
spk_0 And I don't begrudge him that, not saying that he shouldn't.
spk_0 I would imagine he has that until the day that he does retire.
spk_0 But nonetheless, it is a benefit to somebody who is trying to produce
spk_0 and that you get to make all the decisions that are in your best interest.
spk_0 So I would fully expect that he's still going to post respectable, admirable,
spk_0 impressive even numbers.
spk_0 But they are not going to be impactful in the same way that they have been in the past.
spk_0 And certainly not at the level of a $52.5 million player
spk_0 or the kind of impact that Luca is going to need from his co-star.
spk_0 And Nor should any of this be expected from LeBron, saying that he's underwhelming
spk_0 or that he's underperforming.
spk_0 He's 40 years old.
spk_0 He will turn 41 at the end of December.
spk_0 It's remarkable that he still can do what he does.
spk_0 But he has to be incredibly clever to get his offensive numbers
spk_0 and he can't afford to expend energy on defense.
spk_0 He no longer gets to the free throw line with any consistency.
spk_0 And please don't be fooled by his second team all NBA selection last year.
spk_0 That was a byproduct of so many stars not playing the wreck
spk_0 was at 65 games to be eligible.
spk_0 And I would argue some nostalgia and throw in the obsession
spk_0 and fixation on offensive numbers telling the tale of a player's impact.
spk_0 Because if we add in defense,
spk_0 and I believe that if you're one of the top 10 players in the league,
spk_0 you've got to be a two-way player unless you're just extraordinary offensively.
spk_0 I mean, Shay Gilges Alexander without the defense level extraordinary.
spk_0 Anthony Edwards extraordinary offensively.
spk_0 And I would not say LeBron was equal to either one of those guys.
spk_0 Kevin Durant offensively.
spk_0 I could go down the list.
spk_0 Guys that are truly elite, elite offensively.
spk_0 And that's just not where LeBron is at this stage.
spk_0 He's amazing for 40 going on 41.
spk_0 And defensively, he looks very much like a 40 to 41 year old player.
spk_0 Steph Curry received the same recognition from any of the same reasons.
spk_0 And quite honestly, I have my questions about that he deserved it.
spk_0 I'm hard pressed to say either Steph or LeBron is among the top 10 players in the league at this point.
spk_0 And I'm sure that's going to tick off plenty of LeBron and Steph Curry fans,
spk_0 but so be it.
spk_0 All around impact on the game, ability to lead a team.
spk_0 You're top 10.
spk_0 I don't care who you have around you.
spk_0 Your team should be in playoff contention.
spk_0 Steph, without Jimmy Butler, was nowhere close to playoff contention.
spk_0 That's not where he is right now.
spk_0 And again, I don't fault him.
spk_0 He's giving you everything he possibly can.
spk_0 I would say LeBron is too.
spk_0 They're both giving you everything they possibly can at their advanced age.
spk_0 It doesn't mean I need to buy into the idea that they are the same as they ever were or give them a pass
spk_0 because they are doing everything they possibly can with what they have left.
spk_0 This is a cruel, brutal business when it comes to playing in the NBA.
spk_0 It's what can you do, not what you've done, and not how much you're giving of what you can do.
spk_0 It's what can you get done?
spk_0 And the proof is in the putting in terms of where these teams have been the last couple of years.
spk_0 They're simply not those players that they were for the better parts of their careers.
spk_0 They have moments.
spk_0 They have stretches where they still reach that level.
spk_0 But the variance between their best and their worst is much greater than it's ever been.
spk_0 And variance in performance is not an all NBA team trait.
spk_0 I just pray that this doesn't become a season long drama over whether or not LeBron is going to be available.
spk_0 And is this going to be his last season?
spk_0 The decision could go along.
spk_0 The second decision could go a long way toward clearing all that up.
spk_0 It wouldn't that be great.
spk_0 I guess that's why I'm hoping in some ways.
spk_0 Now that he's already put it out there and it's already advertised as the decision of all decisions.
spk_0 It is going to be that so that we can then move on and celebrate him for a year and do it the right way.
spk_0 Because the uncertainty, the season long drama over whether or not LeBron is going to be available.
spk_0 And what he's going to do beyond this year.
spk_0 The Lakers are not good enough to deal with that.
spk_0 And so maybe I'm not going to get my hopes up that this is going to go the right way for all concerned.
spk_0 Because there's nothing about how LeBron has gone about this past summer or how he's operated in the past or how I believe he still perceives himself telling us he's as good as he ever was.
spk_0 Which is simply delusional.
spk_0 It makes me doubt that he's going to accept any sort of diminishment in his role and status gracefully and that he's going to let us know right now.
spk_0 You know what? This is it.
spk_0 I hope that that's the case, but I can't count on it.
spk_0 He is still an important player to the Lakers and LeBron.
spk_0 That's a big reason why I hope that this is handled the right way.
spk_0 In a way that befits the legendary player that he is.
spk_0 But he's reality is he's just not as important as he once was as of right now in the big context of the Lakers and the LeBron.
spk_0 And that for him is surely going to be a tough pill to swallow no matter what the second decision proves to be.
