Beyond the hello and welcome once again to IGN's weekly PlayStation show, I'm your host Max
spk_0
Goville and today we are talking about the sorry state of open world action games set in modern times.
spk_0
Grand Theft Auto 6 is great and all but what's going on with franchises like Saints Row,
spk_0
Sleeping Dogs and just cause, let's get into it!
spk_0
I am joined once again by my good pal Brian Altona, what's up Brian, how you doing? I'm good,
spk_0
how are you? Good okay, beyond and all that. Beyond and all that. And all that.
spk_0
And all that. And all those are two different shows. One of the ones on Nickelodeon in the 90s.
spk_0
I kind of wish we had all that. We've been on double there. That's close. That's close. Yeah,
spk_0
anyway. Yeah, so there's some stuff to talk about. Dan Hauser, the co-founder of Rockstar games,
spk_0
the writer on basically every GTA game going back to I think with the London one, GTA
spk_0
1969, the earliest forms of the franchise. He isn't a rockstar anymore but he's been kind of going
spk_0
on the road appearing on podcasts and offering some interesting insight into I guess the general DNA
spk_0
of GTA and you know, some offering little tidbits of wisdom here and there. And one of them,
spk_0
it's really interesting is basically like touching on how it couldn't work outside of America,
spk_0
which I thought was a really kind of interesting sound bite, which also like I always kind of
spk_0
assumed as much. I feel like the reasoning there is smart but he had a cool quote there where
spk_0
basically saying that like it's so inherently tied to Americana with the exception of the little
spk_0
London expansion they did on the PS1, you needed you need to have guns and you need to have these
spk_0
larger than life characters and it just doesn't work outside of America for that very reason,
spk_0
which I think is that's fair. We have kind of a lampoonable society here.
spk_0
But yeah, I'm curious how GTA 6 compares because I feel like I feel like in terms of just the general
spk_0
cultural zeitgeist, the absurdity of America has kind of skyrocketed in the last 13 years to the
spk_0
point where like if GTA, like how how how satirical can they get and also how is it going to feel
spk_0
without Dan Howes are attached because he like very much defined the tone of that series for so long
spk_0
and now it's I don't even know who's who's heading it up and yeah, I feel like the vibe is going
spk_0
to be totally different for that because how how wouldn't it be you know. Yeah, potentially it's
spk_0
it's odd because I think that there was an era where we got GTA games so often set in different
spk_0
places and in different time periods to some extent most of which like you you know pointed out
spk_0
were in America, but at some point it did feel like those were coming out in such a steady clip
spk_0
that we would theoretically get one set outside of America because it was like you know there's only
spk_0
so much you could do here and then they realized well yeah, there's only so much we could do here
spk_0
in one game for 14 years or whatever right then we had we had we had GTA 4 which I absolutely
spk_0
adored at the time is a sort of like you know an immigrant story coming to America for the first
spk_0
time and getting wrapped up in the crime syndicate stuff and then you had GTA 5 which focused on a
spk_0
trio of protagonists that you know we're all not great people you know, but like maybe maybe
spk_0
thought their their heart was in the right place not Trevor obviously but um and there so there
spk_0
was a lot you could do there a switching coast entirely and now we're going back to the East Coast
spk_0
we're going to Florida again, but yeah there was an era where we got these games so often that it
spk_0
really felt like we were going to get a GTA set in Tokyo we were gonna get a GTA set in I don't know
spk_0
Canada France like whatever you wanted right like I remember like covering video games during that time
spk_0
being in the comments sections being on message boards on social media people always just wanted to
spk_0
see this this franchise grow and evolve and expand and go global right and it just it didn't and
spk_0
it's I guess it's there's sort of some solace in knowing why and I do understand the logic behind
spk_0
it it's also interesting because we have had open world modern contemporary crime game set outside
spk_0
of America other few and far between but sleeping dogs is obviously the first one that comes to mind
spk_0
so it's it's doable right well there was a watchdogs game that set uh in the UK didn't really
spk_0
set the world on fire actually killed the franchise um but uh it's it's possible but we the the
spk_0
the sort of death of GTA you know likes or clones whatever you want to call those yeah I want to
spk_0
I want to touch on that somewhere one the the thing I think is very specifically America about GTA is
spk_0
the the the titular a the auto the the car side of it like it's obviously it's easy to point
spk_0
to like gun culture which is you know prevalent in America but also car culture like so much of
spk_0
American cities are like design with cars in mind to a fault I would say but it it makes for
spk_0
it makes for structurally better better cities to move around like it works well for for a video
spk_0
game of that of that type um you did a whole feature pretty recently about like the the death of
spk_0
GTA clones and people got to call them GTA clones but yeah but also nobody really had a better
spk_0
word for GTA likes GTA likes I guess yeah I did this long video called uh the life death and
spk_0
hopeful future of GTA clones and I basically ran through the history of games that were a lot like
spk_0
GTA and what was happening in the GTA franchise at the time of their release how at one point we've
spk_0
had games like uh Simpsons Hit and Run and Legos City undercover that were GTA clones for little kids
spk_0
we've also had you know we had multiple franchises running concurrently at one point like watchdogs
spk_0
and Saints Row and uh like and GTA were all kind of happening around the same time for a little bit
spk_0
there and then they all kind of stopped and we what we saw was that open world games continued to
spk_0
keep happening right we have open world third person action games some of which you can still vehicles
spk_0
and stuff like that but predominantly they take place either like in the in the distant past or in
spk_0
some weird version of the future um or they they're set in like high fantasy settings or something
spk_0
that that aren't that aren't that aren't real at all right and uh open world games have continued
spk_0
to evolve like you can you know there's there's stuff in cyberpunk that that scratches that GTA itch
spk_0
a little bit but on the other thing that I sort of pointed out and I think you and I have been talking
spk_0
about independently recently is that like a lot of like GTA itself just cannibalized this corner
spk_0
right it just it won it won that race there is nobody else really competing with it in that space
spk_0
GTA online and GTA 5 was massive there was just a quote from the same interview we were citing earlier
spk_0
where they they talked about how they worked on Trevor DLC for a little while and it just
spk_0
didn't come together like they literally said it just didn't work right this is actually the
spk_0
first time that Dan Hauser has addressed this and he's pretty much like the internet knows we made
spk_0
a DLC single player DLC for GTA 5 that never came out yeah um and there's kind of different you
spk_0
know different reports about what happened there but basically they start they they said it was about
spk_0
half finished um yeah Hauser said it was one it was one when you played as Trevor but he was a secret
spk_0
agent it was cute it never quite came together and it was never finished it was about half done
spk_0
when it got abandoned but I think if it had come out we probably wouldn't have gotten to make red dead
spk_0
too so there are always compromises and he says something that I really I really appreciate uh
spk_0
he said he also talked about the possibility of doing GTA zombies but talking about the sort of
spk_0
expansion side of things he uh he said I like
spk_0
what does he say he says I like making stories for me I love the model of GTA 4 when you had the
spk_0
extra stories coming afterwards or red dead one when you had the zombie pack coming afterwards I
spk_0
like doing these extra things so I would personally like to have done more of that in that company
spk_0
and with stuff we're doing in the future we're going to try and come up with worlds where we can
spk_0
add more stories I like single player DLC I just think the audience loves it and it's really fun to make
spk_0
and we never got it because of GTA online which was just printing money uh yeah then at the flip side
spk_0
like had we gotten you know uh uh lost santo stories or whatever for GTA 5 that would have been
spk_0
cool but at the expense of red dead too I don't you know I feel like red dead too is probably the
spk_0
the bigger win there uh but again you know that you know that also got online updates instead it
spk_0
became this whole like ecosystem rather than like a place to tell little stories and yeah yeah
spk_0
the no I missed stuff like the ballad of gaytoni um and you know uh the what was lost in the damned
spk_0
was it um yeah I I love that stuff and I remember like at the time being like you know there's so
spk_0
much cool stuff in GTA 4 that uh you can still continue to build on in that world and then what they
spk_0
ended up doing was a bunch of sort of narrative tinted stuff in GTA online right like there are
spk_0
there are cutscenes in that game and there's there were story drops that like paralleled with stuff
spk_0
that you could buy and collect and and do online uh they just found a different way to sort of funnel
spk_0
those things out and for for people who like had moved on and wanted more the single player stuff
spk_0
that was kind of a bummer right and I think that coinciding with this sort of sort of like total
spk_0
loss of GTA likes and GTA clones has left this giant kind of hole and it's odd because it's like you
spk_0
know we like I said we still get open world games we got you know we got yote just like a month ago
spk_0
we got shadows a couple months before that yeah so I want to touch on that because there are we do
spk_0
still get plenty of open world games I would say we probably get more open world games than
spk_0
than ever they're pretty they're I feel like they're easier to make they're almost like a you
spk_0
know standard format uh whereas you know for a while it was kind of um I mean they were too they were
spk_0
huge they were massive but it's like you get yote you get um you know shadows those are both
spk_0
samurai games where you you can't you can't steal a car you can steal a course which is cool but
spk_0
and then looking at like Star Wars outlaws you can't just steal land speeders you have your little
spk_0
scooter that comes up and you can ride that around which is which is all right there's yeah you know
spk_0
there's avatar where you have a tarot actal but it's like there's and again like you know cyberpunk
spk_0
2077 has an abundance of GTA DNA in there like if you look at the original reveal trailer like they
spk_0
very clearly were cribbing from rock stars entire way of just being like the hero of this game is
spk_0
the city itself here's night city welcome here's all these weird characters you're gonna get to know
spk_0
over the course of this this game uh and again it's also it's still very much rooted in like an RPG
spk_0
like it's got very crunchy uh you know like stats and stuff in there like it it's that's not quite
spk_0
a GTA like you know it's not quite that same that same experience um it's also a first person so
spk_0
it's you get a little bit less of that and I think that like if you're going to look at a game that
spk_0
maybe attempts at slightly more successfully it's probably far cry because that at least you know
spk_0
that has a little bit of that a little bit more of that sandbox like uh oh like I made a huge mess
spk_0
I can start you know dynamic fires and steel vehicles and stuff like that when you and I played
spk_0
cyberpunk in 20 it didn't even really have cops that that that could chase you right like they were
spk_0
like they were like oh shucks he got away with it again they fixed that in post yeah yeah they
spk_0
fixed that in a good in a good spot but even so it's like it doesn't it has you know hints of GTA
spk_0
but it's not it's not GTA like it's cyberpunk it's its own thing um yeah and then looking at far
spk_0
cry I feel like the thing that makes far cry its own thing is that it is whereas GTA is very
spk_0
hit very much hinges on like an urban setting far cry is the exact opposite where it's like you are
spk_0
far away from everything like you are out yeah middle of nowhere and instead of there being
spk_0
you know like you do have like what like if you blow up enough stuff like more bad guys will keep
spk_0
coming and there's one that five star feeling but ultimately you're also like fighting commoto
spk_0
dragons and bears and stuff like there's a whole nature element to it which is another another thing
spk_0
we're talking about this and like I don't know was spider man 2 one of the last contemporary open
spk_0
world games in an urban setting and again that's not a GTA like by a long shot at all um yeah because
spk_0
you don't you don't you don't even get in vehicles in that game and you could do the bicycle you
spk_0
could do the bicycle missions you can do the bicycle yeah there was a lot of bicycle people did
spk_0
mods on PC where you could be a garbage can so yeah you can have fun out there but spider man stealing
spk_0
cart doesn't make any sense like one of the things I point out uh in in in in that video from a
spk_0
couple of months ago is that like like you know the the venom DLC was sort of like okay this guy's
spk_0
on the ground he's running around a city and he's throwing cars around he's beating up cops which
spk_0
spider man wouldn't do but it wouldn't make sense for him to get in a car even though he has like
spk_0
in the animated series and stuff like that and so it's yeah it's very it's very funny to me like
spk_0
you spider man it's not a GTA clone but it is the like a bunch of people got together and made an
spk_0
an open world game set in New York City and it's like okay so like I don't know you could theoretically
spk_0
kick all those assets and that engine is someone else and be like can what if you could shoot people
spk_0
yeah so the thing that blows my mind about this is like when you're making a big open world game
spk_0
I would say and again this is this is I would say the bulk of what you're creating is the world
spk_0
itself you are creating the setting and you are creating the mechanics that would exist within that
spk_0
setting so like running certain climbing shooting etc uh but when you're building it you're designing
spk_0
New York when you're when you're designing the entirety of Los Santos like that is such a massive
spk_0
foundation and the fact that they're not like yeah let's get a little more mileage out of that by
spk_0
telling some new stories in this in this sandbox like let's you know I feel like the and again like
spk_0
it takes a lot of work to make a video game I don't know how they do things at rock star I don't
spk_0
know how they do video game stuff anywhere like it's it's I imagine there's different approaches
spk_0
and also the fidelity of games has increased gradually over the years to the point where it's like
spk_0
if you have the option of uh you know feeding the money printing machine that is GTA online
spk_0
making an entirely new IP that will become one of the best selling games ever not IP but new
spk_0
installment with red dead too versus doing uh you know a bite size adventures of Trevor
spk_0
Phillips the secret agent it's like kind of a no brainer which direction you'd go with that
spk_0
sure but that said it is kind of crazy to me that we didn't get more I mean I guess the the way
spk_0
they repurposed all the stuff in Los Santos was online it was just to make it this big living
spk_0
breathing online thing but I still wish that they were just telling stories there and you know there
spk_0
is a there's a flip side of that where um I love the yuck as a like a dragon games I adore them
spk_0
I am kind of tired of of comorote show the setting that they mostly are in like this you know
spk_0
this fictionalized version of of kabuki show is like it's it's an awesome it's an awesome
spk_0
area they've managed to do like little granular improvements and updates over the years and
spk_0
that's funny because they do reflect real world changes to that area that said it's like a small
spk_0
neighborhood district that you just kind of run around and do the same stuff in and I'm like sure
spk_0
if we gotten I don't know seven games that were all in one corner of Liberty City I'd be like okay
spk_0
GTA let's come on let's do a little bit more but that said they've also they put out yuck as a
spk_0
game's constantly they're like really good about you know popping them out of a good clip to the
spk_0
point where like I think that's keeping that that franchise uh you know I think every time one
spk_0
comes out people are like maybe I should give this a shot and there's you know a deep well of
spk_0
stuff to explore and I mean what's the what's the Queen's New York version of Osaka because that's
spk_0
what they did on the third Spider-Man game right they're like go out to the suburbs and visit
spk_0
your in-laws you know like oh man yeah that's what's kind of boring out here no and the red
spk_0
dead thing is interesting too because I feel like like we just saw like this this happens in
spk_0
variable every time the new new open world game releases but people take one single element of it
spk_0
and they compare it to another one and they were like oh look when you run on the ice in Ghost of
spk_0
Yote your character doesn't get cold like they do when you do that in red dead and I was kind of like
spk_0
yeah but also that's the that's the problem right like I think painting yourself into a corner where
spk_0
you need that level of you have that level of detail expectation for every single interaction you do
spk_0
is probably why we only get one of these games every 14 years now rather than uh sucker punch putting
spk_0
out two in five years and like I don't know I want I want open world games to be big and beautiful
spk_0
and awesome but I also think like if you lost a little bit of that detail I remember at the
spk_0
expense of getting more of them or jump into red dead one when it first came out right after I'd
spk_0
played Fallout 3 and I was really disappointed you couldn't just pick up everything right which
spk_0
you know I'm like that's an annoying feature I don't need that in everything like I don't want
spk_0
I don't want to have like digital hoarding problems with like you know cans and sweet potatoes or
spk_0
whatever the hell you collect in those games um dandy boy apples or whatever but like
spk_0
you know there's this level of like I I the world felt more robust because you could interact with
spk_0
so many different little disparate pieces of it and then I remember just like running full force
spk_0
into the back of like a stage coach in red dead and there's all these pots and pans hanging off
spk_0
and they don't do anything and I was like no why don't the pots and pans react dynamically to like
spk_0
slapstick maneuvers here which is like a stupid complaint it doesn't make any sense it's a completely
spk_0
they're doing totally different things um but yeah there is that that kind of escalation of trying to
spk_0
just increase the detail and increase the the quality it becomes like this just just ship it like I
spk_0
I wish we were get I don't know I wish we'd get like lower lower res games more frequently sometimes
spk_0
uh and yeah it's funny because we're getting we're getting some GTA 2 likes like I feel like we've
spk_0
been seeing this this gradual rise of like smaller scale games uh that are kind of adopting that that
spk_0
top down uh that top down look there was the precinct which kind of look like GTA 2 but you were a cop
spk_0
there's rustler which is like grant that horse where I think it's in medieval times and you
spk_0
just run around and there was uh what was the what was the delivery one I just I was just thinking
spk_0
about that game yeah uh it's not calling all cars it was it was it was because that was the old
spk_0
David jaffy game now there was there was a game all costs yeah deliver it all costs that was close
spk_0
and now it was really funny right and it's it's it's very like physics based slapstick um and it's
spk_0
you know it's less about like stealing vehicles and more about like getting across town while delivering
spk_0
goods crazy taxi yeah and cops cops would chase you and stuff like that so it was funny but um yeah
spk_0
I dug this one I had I had a a good time playing it did it scratch that GTA 5 or 4 itch
spk_0
not really but it got you know it got a little gave me a little bit of you know uh Chinatown wars
spk_0
of like delivering drugs across town it's that particular perspective which is like the you
spk_0
know you look at GTA like two and Chinatown wars and like they're they're very different product
spk_0
than what three onward were where it's like a different yeah uh you know different level of depth
spk_0
there but I would love it if just some smaller devs were like hey let's try to make a let's make
spk_0
a sandbox game it looks like a ps2 game who gives it who gives a shit of the tensions are lower
spk_0
you know do some like low poly you know again we see these games that are that are really really
spk_0
ambitious and would have been you know they they would have been triple a games 25 years ago
spk_0
and now they're like made by small indie teams and there's like there's more resources out
spk_0
there people are capable of doing that stuff and I'm just kind of like why and again I don't
spk_0
make games so I can't speak to exactly how complex it is to build uh you know a facsimile of an
spk_0
American city and then populate it with NPCs that will react to you when you commit crime but it's
spk_0
just kind of it's kind of surprising you don't see people trying to like trying to make that um
spk_0
that said there are you know there are people I would say in the sort of the the double a game
spk_0
development space who are sort of trying to do this stuff um in addition to Dan Howzer uh talking
spk_0
about GTA things uh the original Saints Row design director for Saints Row one Chris Stockman
spk_0
has apparently been trying to get another Saints Row thing off the ground uh following the the very
spk_0
disappointing reboot that happened fairly recently that shortly thereafter resulted in the you
spk_0
know the closure of volition entirely which again is like such a such a drag because that's a studio
spk_0
with some wonderful kind of legacy to it but yeah that was that that was a sad sort of footnote on
spk_0
the end of a like once really great franchise which like I said earlier was at one point
spk_0
not necessarily neck and neck with GTA but doing enough interesting stuff on its own and an
spk_0
occasionally eclipsing it in some departments that it was just really cool to have those things
spk_0
concurrently and then the reboot came out uh I finished this game it it was technically a mess
spk_0
there were moments where I was like okay I'm getting a bit of that classic Saints Row vibe you know
spk_0
like some of it was just over the top and goofy enough but also that is a franchise that started
spk_0
off fairly grounded and then got they kind of turned the big wheel to make it more and more ridiculous
spk_0
to I think create an identity on its own and I think they sort of split the fan base there and so
spk_0
yeah it was it was sort of surprising to wake up today and see Saints Row in the news again as a
spk_0
potential thing that could possibly return like they're you know that they're looking for new pitches
spk_0
for it was just kind of like yeah so all right. Dr. and basically he's currently the studio director
spk_0
of a VR company called BitPlanet Games they do the Battle of Saul and Ultra Wings again it hasn't
spk_0
been really working in the Saints Row-ish space for a cool minute and this you know Saints Row 1 came out
spk_0
was that 2006 or seven like that's a been a while but he's basically like I can bring much of that old
spk_0
band back together who worked on Saints Row 1 I could turn that IP around with a decent budget they
spk_0
don't even have to fund it I could get together I get other outside people to fund it I could turn
spk_0
the franchise around I know I could and then he went on Reddit like last week and said guys and
spk_0
gals I have hopeful news I've been asked to create a pitch for a Saints Row reboot I can't say anything
spk_0
more than that but my dreams for this game just became a little more than just dreams you know
spk_0
update is this is not a VR game thankfully I would hope not and then I guess he's talked about how
spk_0
he would have made he wants to make a prequel he wants to do like a basically a prequel to Saints Row 1
spk_0
that's a set in the 1970s and it's sort of showing how the gangs that you interact with in that first
spk_0
game come together which is cool idea it says you go in all in on the 70s theme with big afro's
spk_0
bell bottoms and the music of that whole period which sure I guess you know that's okay what was it
spk_0
did Mafia did the 60s right Mafia did I think they did 70s didn't they was at the 70s yeah because
spk_0
yeah because I remember it was just like it was like oh how do you make one of these games where there's
spk_0
no cell phones right like there are cars and stuff like that so yeah I'd be for it I think that
spk_0
like the issue is we're getting GTA 6 right and so anything you do after that game releases
spk_0
assuming that game releases it's been long enough we'll live in this sort of post GTA 6 shadow so
spk_0
I think what you have to do is you have to make something that's smaller and like a little like
spk_0
budget and friendly basically right like you have to make an open world game with a smaller city
spk_0
that's 40 bucks you bring back Johnny Gatt or whatever it is you bring back that small crew you scale
spk_0
back the amount of like things and expectations for what that could be and I think you could attract
spk_0
a lot of people like I think that you know you're gonna have a tough time playing pulling people
spk_0
away from GTA 6 online whatever that's gonna be that's gonna be massive I assume it's gonna
spk_0
print money for another 10 years but I don't I don't want to see Saints Row die forever I
spk_0
do want to see that game have a second chance I don't know if necessarily a 70s prequel is what
spk_0
I want it's at that point where what is Saints Row yeah because that's such a fragmented fan base
spk_0
it's it's kind of been dragged through the mud it's like you have the the first two games which
spk_0
you know have their dedicated fandom then you've got this sort of soft reboot with Saints Row
spk_0
the third which then went completely off the rails first in a sort of fun way and then in a very
spk_0
bad way where they were like it's now a musical rock opera set in hell and you have superpowers
spk_0
what are you doing what's happening over there yeah and then they did this reboot that sort of felt
spk_0
very designed by committee it's for everybody and nobody at the same time uh and again that
spk_0
also suffered from you know it tried to make things grounded but after you have a game where you've
spk_0
got like VTOL jets and superpowers it's kind of hard to be like all right you can run around
spk_0
and drive cars and you can jump you know like you don't have jetpacks and shit like it's kind of it's
spk_0
it changes the level of expectation the reboot try to get things grounded but also like I unlock
spk_0
to perk from my card that let it jump onto the roof and then it would get stuck up there because
spk_0
they forgot to like finish jumping cars yeah they finished they forgot to finish like making the
spk_0
roof and yeah so that's the sort of questionable status of Saints Row like maybe this will materialize
spk_0
I don't have much faith that that's the case I think that's kind of uh I don't know it meanwhile
spk_0
there's Minds Eye which was from you know GTA 3 onward producer Leslie Benzys yeah GTA alumni
spk_0
worked on that game yep and uh that one was very much like okay we're gonna make a dynamic open
spk_0
world it's gonna be gorgeous it's gonna have all this stuff but it's also gonna connect through
spk_0
this like you know user generated content fever dream it's just crazy sort of like you know
spk_0
2017 San Francisco tech broke pitch what if Roblox had the art direction of Cyberpunk 2077 yeah
spk_0
and it just I don't know you you looked at this yesterday there were like eight people playing
spk_0
this game concurrently yeah on we we gave it like not just we but every this this game got really
spk_0
really bad reviews um it was like straight up broken at launch and again like we I don't I don't
spk_0
want to see these things fail I don't want to see these things get lost like it sucks it like we're
spk_0
like we need more GTA clones and then we get a couple of them and they just don't it's not even that
spk_0
they don't even reach the high bar set by Rockstar like they don't reach the high bar set by a
spk_0
functional video game that is released and has you know when you push the buttons it does the thing
spk_0
you want it to do like which not a high bar right that is a pretty low expectation of like does
spk_0
the product work does the guy get stuck in the wall when you run no I mean it's again it's the
spk_0
whole thing where they're they're trying to make money on stuff that is new and sexy and being
spk_0
like it is an entire platform for user generated content like four night or Roblox and you know
spk_0
people who have checkbooks have dollar signs in their eyes at the mention of that yep but like
spk_0
you know we're like why don't they make more games like they made on ps2 and it's like because
spk_0
they stopped making those 25 years ago they don't make them anymore it's not you know it's the
spk_0
stilja has value but it's not it's not new it's not sexy like it's not gonna it's so yeah okay so
spk_0
two two thoughts on that and one is the pessimistic one and one is the optimistic one so I'll go with
spk_0
I'll go with the you know the bad news first the bad news is that we already have Fortnite and
spk_0
that has cannibalized most of this like in fortnite you can you can you know make a custom character
spk_0
or basically buy one you know kid him out in whatever you want him to wear pick up different
spk_0
guns all over the world driver around an open world steel vehicles and shoot each other and
spk_0
cause chaos in mayhem right you can also play a 3d simsons game which we don't get more of
spk_0
anymore you can play a Lego city undercover basically there's like open world Lego stuff in there
spk_0
and so this fortnite has become for better or worse a place where a lot of this stuff exists now
spk_0
so a lot of the GTA clones just got folded into this endless daily play games as a service thing
spk_0
and if you love fortnite this is the best news possible because your toy box is bottomless every
spk_0
single day you get new stuff but if you like if you played fortnite for a couple months or a
spk_0
couple weeks like I did a couple years ago and you're like I get it cool I'm gonna move on
spk_0
other things now it's a bummer because like we're we're not getting another simsons hit and around
spk_0
but we will get simsons in fortnite we're not getting a let another Lego city undercover but we
spk_0
will get them in fortnite we're not going to get another you know like there are so many IPs
spk_0
that would lend itself to like an open world contemporary city blah blah blah blah and they just
spk_0
get pushed into fortnite so cool they live on somewhere but in terms of like a standalone game
spk_0
that doesn't happen anymore the optimistic thing that I feel might happen at some point
spk_0
is that about 10 years ago around the sort of advent of like shovel night and a bunch of other
spk_0
things there was this tremendous sort of vintage nostalgia for 16 bit Metroidvania action
spk_0
platformers and a lot of them were pixel art right and like just recently we got you know Hollow Knight
spk_0
which is not pixel art was very much fundamentally rooted in like the mechanics of something like
spk_0
super Metroid on steroids right with a with a couple of dashes or heavy heavy poor of souls like in
spk_0
there um then after that I feel like we started to get like a this sort of renaissance of n64
spk_0
action platforming games made by indie devs or double adevs then we started to see things like
spk_0
low poly ps1 games make a comeback so that thing you said earlier about like hopefully seeing like
spk_0
ps2 games get a return I think we're gonna get there I think the tools are gonna get easy enough for
spk_0
people and I think it's going to be nostalgic enough for younger devs who came up playing those
spk_0
games to be like I have a team now it's a small group of people you know we've got we've got the
spk_0
engines for it we've got the textures for it we've got the the ideas for it and I think we're
spk_0
gonna start to see like low poly ps2 nostalgic and I think we already aren't and then from there
spk_0
I think we're gonna start to see open world games that look like the first few GTAs and so we're
spk_0
gonna get there that's my that's my optimism that's my hope okay that's fair uh yeah I mean I
spk_0
mean it I guess it's you know it's the people who grow up with that stuff we're gonna start making
spk_0
it at some point the question is are they gonna make it you know in real five to sell on steam or
spk_0
they're gonna make it in roblox to make money on roblox like it's kind of a question yeah yeah
spk_0
so there are a few other I don't know in addition to mines there's other couple of these GTA shaped
spk_0
games that were or well were in development some are um contraband was the one from the just cause
spk_0
developers which was announced by xbox and I think 2021 uh and then we didn't hear anything for four
spk_0
years and then they canceled it so don't know what that was I think it was gonna be like a co-op
spk_0
just cause-y type thing I think it was gonna be you know I think they're trying to do like sort of
spk_0
a live service like gun running you know buddy buddy buddy crime game from the looks of it the only
spk_0
thing we've seen aside from this reveal trail they put out was a some screenshots of UI showed up
spk_0
that were like showing multiplayer lobbies they didn't show any the actual game so you don't know
spk_0
what was going on there but it had a distinctly kind of groovy 70s aesthetic to it which could have
spk_0
been fun again like I love that you know GTA is very much pushing into the sort of the present day
spk_0
space I like some I like a good little you know retro period piece adventure I think it's a fun time
spk_0
I'm I'd be down to see them do this but they're not gonna do it uh there's also the studio liquid
spk_0
swords which was founded by one of the just cause folks X avalanche uh and they don't have a name
spk_0
for this yet we just put up a teaser this is the first gameplay teaser if you're watching the video
spk_0
you're about to see it I think twice back to back because it's 11 second yeah that was it it's
spk_0
11 seconds long it is footage of cars driving in the city it's a cool looking city it looks
spk_0
grimy as hell it looks very GTA 4 looks like you know kind of 90s New York City I'm into it
spk_0
they don't have a name for this game and they showed us 11 seconds of cars driving around and
spk_0
it's just I feel like two two little too soon I guess like I want to be excited for this but this
spk_0
is just doesn't give me a ton of a ton of hope based on I saw like one of the top comments on
spk_0
the on this trailer was like I hate when a game trailer gives away the whole story which I
spk_0
bless your heart that is so good no I I'm you know I I'm legally uh I have to support anything
spk_0
made by studio name liquid swords shout out to Wu Tang but yeah I want more I want to see more
spk_0
from this it's it's this was this was just a couple of screenshots a couple of months ago so
spk_0
you know now it's 11 seconds so maybe in a year it'll be 30 or a minute or there'll be a demo I
spk_0
don't know I'm I'm I'm hopeful for this yeah I want to be yeah this is this is one of the only like
spk_0
you know ticks all the boxes right it is a you know modern or contemporary open world I
spk_0
uh you know potentially crime game where you potentially crime where you I like I don't think
spk_0
you're gonna be a cop I'm not sure um but we don't know much about it but I'm I'm hopeful that
spk_0
this comes out and I don't think it's gonna give GTA 6 a run for its money but it'll give me
spk_0
something to play when I finish GTA 6 right and that's all we want I want I don't need something
spk_0
that like takes down the king every 10 years I just need something to like scratch that itch
spk_0
in in between the 10 15 20 years it takes to make a GTA game now that's all yeah that's fair
spk_0
sleeping dogs one of my favorite sandbox games ever that got not sequel that got a it was like a
spk_0
crappy like MMO style multiplayer thing that was like a triad wars I think it was it was like
spk_0
mandatory online riddled with micro transactions yeah knock closed beta just all the all the
spk_0
battlegrounds and the I mean this again again this began as true crime Hong Kong and then
spk_0
the vision was like we don't want it and Square Enix was like we'll take it and then they were
spk_0
like nevermind we also don't want it uh because it didn't I guess it didn't sell how people wanted to
spk_0
it didn't do great uh I love this game so much it's just like I feel like it's a very good like
spk_0
it's a very just it's a again this is a we're a weird demand for a big huge sprawling open world
spk_0
game it's relatively tight story wise like it is a manageable narrative it is not a 70 hour
spk_0
experience that loops in every possible uh you know faction in this universe it's kind of like a
spk_0
pretty pretty dope little like you know crime story with a bunch of side quests in there um great cast
spk_0
the good news is for anybody who likes this intellectual property uh seem a little of um Chang Qi is
spk_0
making a movie he's trying to he's he's been talking about producing it for a cool minute uh he's
spk_0
periodically giving updates uh he seems like he genuinely like really really cares about this
spk_0
this property like I mean the dudes you know seems like um you play Animal Crossing like in
spk_0
Dignia I did yeah hey I went I went to his animal crossing town during the pandemic it was a cool
spk_0
he was great yeah it was great I think he had a gym and everything like that he's also he was
spk_0
just wonderful just a genuinely and that is that is a that is an open world game where you steal stuff
spk_0
sort of fair fair there are there are cops there just dogs and they're glued to one building like I
spk_0
could totally see this being okay it's a recognizable IP with some you know brand equity or whatever
spk_0
and people are like oh it's based on a hit video you know asterisk on the hit uh but it's it's
spk_0
cheaper to make a kung fu movie than it is to make a new open world game and so maybe there's a
spk_0
universe where the success of this movie if it ever actually happens results in us getting a remake
spk_0
I don't see it resulting in us getting a sequel like I don't think it's you know I think I think
spk_0
what's important about sleeping dots is it I think it it's sort of it it nailed exactly what we're
spk_0
talking about here about like you don't necessarily have to come at the king by mimicking their
spk_0
moves exactly right sleeping dogs was built on this premise that you were this like badass action hero
spk_0
who could use the environment to their advantage to beat the hell out of people and that's like
spk_0
something that you know we've we've had like glimpses of that in some GTA games but this one
spk_0
specifically was just like oh you see that you see that sink you see that fire hydrant you see that
spk_0
car door all of those things can be weaponized against your foes and that's like that is them
spk_0
building on the concept of an open world crime game but also being like what's our flavor no right
spk_0
right what's our thesis like yes you were an outer cover cop and if you did too much bad crime you
spk_0
would lose cop points but if you did like badass points or badass stuff you get criminal points so
spk_0
you could be more undercover or whatever you ran into parking meters you'd like get some money but
spk_0
you'd lose cop points or whatever I realized this was basically my first yakuza game because of all
spk_0
the weird environmental attacks there's there are guns in the game but they're basically like
spk_0
you know sing single use items like they don't they're not really fun to use they're not really
spk_0
a big part of I think there's a few shootout set pieces but for the most part you're just
spk_0
beating people up and it's fun as hell and it's you know it feels very kind of Arkham style combat
spk_0
almost and it's the driving is good I think it was the same studio that did I want to say it was
spk_0
like little big planet racing oh interesting I might be wrong it's fun games yeah they did a
spk_0
they did a bunch of racing stuff so they had like experience making good driving games and it was
spk_0
the driving's fun as hell it also had one of my favorite mechanics where you can basically climb
spk_0
out of the car and then jump onto a different car and then steal that car or somebody's driving it
spk_0
and it's just like it just felt good yeah it was a little mechanic and again it didn't I think
spk_0
I had boats it didn't have planes it's not a massive massive world it's kind of just Hong Kong
spk_0
but it's dense and it feels grounded it's like it's fun in the right places and they did
spk_0
some awesome story DLC they did nightmare north point that was basically big trouble and little
spk_0
thriller like it was this wonderful mashup of like you know it had like hopping Chinese vampires
spk_0
but then also like weird 80s you know John Carpenter style goons and it was just
spk_0
it kicked ass they had all game of death you know DLC and again I love that like Rockstar is like yeah
spk_0
we figured out that the story DLCs waste of her one's time or you know it's it feels good but it
spk_0
doesn't make as much money and these guys were like yeah it's like the beginning of thriller but then
spk_0
you fight people oh man god love this game yeah so I mean I'm I'm cautiously optimistic that we
spk_0
see a movie at some point but it kind of feels like the same situation is uh well twisted metal
spk_0
or I guess fallout where it's like yeah we're gonna get there's a show cool okay wins the next
spk_0
multiple seasons of the show and yeah and no game yeah like this is I mean we're we're we're heading
spk_0
into fallout season two soon uh we you know we got twisted metal season two no no new games to
spk_0
go with those things so yeah it's it's a bummer good drag I feel like yeah they'll just put you
spk_0
know they'll put sweet tooth and fortnight I was gonna say the same thing like I feel more
spk_0
likely gonna see just crossover DLC then I don't I don't know if this one's on your list but we had a
spk_0
really interesting thing happened the other interesting I mean not great uh where uh Scarface the
spk_0
world is yours oh my god which this is so funny okay so this this game around the same time Scarface
spk_0
and the godfather which are both you know sort of quintessential classic uh you know gangster movies
spk_0
got video game tie-ins uh I loved uh the godfather I had the it's called black hand edition I think
spk_0
and I had on the Wii um had motion controls you could use to like punch Italians um which is great
spk_0
who would do so and who would do such a thing besides my cousins um with each other and
spk_0
and me um no and Scarface was basically like what if Scarface survived the end of that movie and
spk_0
had this thing called the balls meter and it was just so silly and it was um you know uh post
spk_0
vice city so it was it's already kind of been there done that with a lot of the setting but it was
spk_0
it was cool enough right like it it did it something and then recently it up a listing for it with
spk_0
a new trailer appeared on uh Gog and steam and it was basically using like AI upscaling and it was
spk_0
posted by this studio that didn't actually from what I read didn't actually have the rights to the
spk_0
franchise now this is abandoned where right like no one owns this this game anymore no one is updating
spk_0
this game the studio that made this game is probably long gone but Scarface is still owned
spk_0
by a major movie studio and so and and so are the likenesses of all the the people in it right like
spk_0
you can't just be like oh is no one using that is it is it cool if we make money off of that like
spk_0
you just you can't do that just because it hasn't been used for a while right I like this is like
spk_0
like a Scarface move right there it's like the world is yours so is this intellectual property
spk_0
released it yeah and so yeah they put this thing up and then they basically had a there was
spk_0
like a trailer for it and people were like well wish listing it and stuff like that and then uh
spk_0
they basically had to put out the statement being like whoops sorry we weren't supposed to do that
spk_0
we're not allowed to do that pretend we didn't do that have a nice day bye and so that's that one
spk_0
so I would be floored if that game comes back ever I feel like if it was going to this just set
spk_0
that back by like seven years because the those whatever team was responsible for that is not
spk_0
going to be in court with with these guys so yeah it's it's it's you can't buy this game anymore
spk_0
you can't download this game anymore um and so there's no you know legal way to play it again so
spk_0
uh that sucks I mean look at yeah so this hidden run like who can somebody just get that
spk_0
like EA has the keys to that EA didn't even it was Vivendi or something that yeah it's all these
spk_0
weird like it's okay it was Fox at the time now owned by Disney the game was published by EA but
spk_0
develop by I get it's all there was tangled up and some there was a former devit for Vendi that did
spk_0
a he did a thing and read it a couple a couple months ago where he talked about how they had
spk_0
pitched a sequel to that game and they had gotten the planning stages and um the the studio at the time
spk_0
was basically like no we don't we don't want to do this with this license it's not worth it blah blah blah
spk_0
blah and so like yeah that game's a one and done right and again they had the license for I think
spk_0
three games or something yeah it was they they basically they didn't have to pay extra to use the
spk_0
license to make more games they just didn't want to make more games which is just yeah frustrating
spk_0
yeah it sucks it sucks yeah so it's a bomber but you know again they're in fortnight so I guess you
spk_0
can scratch that itcher itch itchy that scratchy over there but uh well you you can't you can't do
spk_0
it in your own game dear listener slash viewer if you have a funness for Simpsons games you go
spk_0
to go check out the big feature that brine did about the uh the the best worst and weirdest
spk_0
Simpsons games of all time which is all of them you covered all of them I covered every Simpsons game
spk_0
ever made uh just about chronologically from the beginning which started with Bart versus space
spk_0
mutants which man not not great but also we enjoyed the hell out of it as kids because it was just like
spk_0
you know you could walk around Springfield and you know skateboarders Bart and stuff like that but
spk_0
the plot was basically like there are aliens that invaded Springfield and you need a spray paint
spk_0
things purple to to to stop them and it doesn't it doesn't really doesn't make any sense at all but
spk_0
yeah then we got a lot of Simpsons games after that the reason I didn't make a ranked list was because
spk_0
to be completely blunt there are maybe four and a half good Simpsons games out of like 24 games total
spk_0
yeah that's that's so yeah Simpsons wrestling which it was the first PlayStation uh Simpsons game
spk_0
ever released was straight up bad it's just a bad piece of crap game but no I mean we got like we got like
spk_0
um you know uh Simpsons crazy taxi style game we got a Simpsons skateboarding game that was really bad
spk_0
like there was a while there were there kind of chasing trends and I think now they're just like
spk_0
Fortnite's popular just put the Simpsons there but yeah it's a bummer it's a bummer even like
spk_0
Simpsons tapped out was something I really liked but yeah to celebrate the Fortnite Simpsons collaboration
spk_0
I made this video so go check that out too but yeah it just got it got me thinking like this is
spk_0
this these guys had their own GTA clone for a minute and it was a one and done and now we don't
spk_0
have it anymore and yeah you know not to be depressed depressing about this stuff but
spk_0
we used to get these games we used to be you used to be a planet a country whatever it is now
spk_0
we're still now we're still the only country that where GTA games are set I guess to bring it
spk_0
yeah full circle but it is a bummer it is a bummer uh hey speaking of weird uh you know
spk_0
nostalgia for 20 year old things uh Sony has a new ad campaign for the fall that feels very reminiscent
spk_0
of just the PS2 era like David Lynch directed the commercials that are just weird as hell uh the
spk_0
new the new slogan is it happens on ps5 and it's these these little like yeah they're little
spk_0
commercials where basically there's one where these dudes are you know this lady's driving through
spk_0
the desert and these dudes are hitchhiking and she pulls up alongside them and it zooms out and you
spk_0
see that they crashed our spaceship they were in the spaceship and it says it happens on ps5 and
spk_0
well I don't okay it's it's weird because it's these like royalty I think that's just some like
spk_0
generic spaceship there's another one where a lady wakes up and she's she's in this car and she's
spk_0
got like a headache and she's like oh what was that and she looks you know she opens her door
spk_0
and you reveals that she is in a giant tanker truck that is like impaled on the the needle on the
spk_0
Empire State Building and it's just like it happens on ps and I'm like what game is this I don't
spk_0
even know what I know I want to play there's a third one where basically these like fishermen pull
spk_0
in this like awful like lovecraftian looking giant fish and then it do just like cuts a hole in
spk_0
its stomach and climbs out and they give him like a rag and he wipes his face off and it's like it
spk_0
happens on ps5 like yeah but where what game is this like I mean a good game that should happen
spk_0
on ps5 that has lovecraftian giant fish what if he's like I just know I don't know I just know
spk_0
I don't know I this is definitely like you know it's just weirdo like you know
spk_0
Zootodone I love these to be yeah to be clear they're fun but I'm also kind of like hey man you
spk_0
guys got some pretty recognizable intellectual property out there maybe use some of that you know
spk_0
like maybe put incorporate some recognizable things so we're like oh hey it's that thing we
spk_0
love from the real real life and maybe this is some like deep cut boss from a game I don't remember
spk_0
but like it just I don't know it it it feels almost like like a fake like a fake video game ad if
spk_0
that makes sense I so I'm actually I'm totally fine with that because I think that what they're
spk_0
basically saying here is that like these crazy stories happen when you sit down and play video
spk_0
games on your PlayStation and I don't want to dunk on Xbox too much but the exact opposite thing
spk_0
is happening with their marketing campaign which is this wishy washy millymouth anything can
spk_0
be anything if you imagine it you know what do you want to see what your phone to you know you
spk_0
want to spend $30 a month to stream Call of Duty on your phone you can do it do you have a PC
spk_0
you could play games on there like yeah we know we know we can do those things I feel like I
spk_0
had a hard enough time when I was a kid being like mom I want a PlayStation for Christmas and she's
spk_0
like what is it I'm like it's like an Nintendo but it's not and she's like what are you talking
spk_0
about you know like it's explaining to parents what a video game console was or why I needed one
spk_0
when they were straightforward machines I could okay right now like Xbox is like this is an Xbox
spk_0
and like is it it's a TV oh no it's yeah this is also an Xbox and it's like what it's that's just
spk_0
the controller and like yes but this could also be an Xbox and like I think it's I I appreciate what
spk_0
they're doing but from like a basically communicating what your product is standpoint it's it's it feels
spk_0
really scatter shot in a completely bizarre way meanwhile Sony's in the exact opposite situation
spk_0
where they've got like they're doing fine selling PS5s they could just put up like the PS5 logo and
spk_0
just say like it video game and like people yeah I guess I'll buy a PS5 for Christmas they're just
spk_0
putting these weird these weird like short art films I love it yeah okay no it's whatever yeah I
spk_0
think that like one company being like anything is everything and then the other company being like
spk_0
it's where's one thing you just need one thing and then you can do it on that thing if you want
spk_0
that's it inside the fish you can only do it get a PS5 stage you know it's like every like for
spk_0
years it's been like you know game pass is going to be the Netflix of games and imagine if Netflix
spk_0
had a marketing campaign that they were like this is a Netflix and they was just a guy holding a
spk_0
phone you'd be like yeah I know of course of course I know that like no I like again I don't want
spk_0
to dunk on them too much and I think it's important that Sony has a direct competitor in this space
spk_0
in somewhere right because I that you know that good things happen when competition is good I want
spk_0
I want competition is good with each other the fact that yeah like the fact that Xbox is effectively
spk_0
kind of pulling out of the console space and being like yeah we we make a we make a storefront
spk_0
that is accessible through many many means and if you like a console that'll cost you extra and
spk_0
like Sony's going to come out with the PS6 and be like it's it's two thousand dollars and it
spk_0
has extra rumbles now no I mean you're you knelted like the one thing that they're truly still
spk_0
competing on right now is who can raise prices the fastest and the most right like it's one of those
spk_0
things where like Xbox is like oh yeah we got a pretty good thing go and what should we do
spk_0
third what do you think 30 bucks a month 360 bucks a year should we do that and play stations like
spk_0
we're selling a lot of these play stations what if we raise the price again it's like man you don't
spk_0
stop it please stop it just that's even getting on a focus group testing back and people don't feel like
spk_0
they're stranded in the desert enough when playing station there's also a lot of demands that people
spk_0
feel like they've been eaten by a fish and yeah we're really we're not testing well with people who
spk_0
are scared of heights so we need to do something that really hammers home that PlayStation will make
spk_0
you feel all those feelings I do like the idea somebody getting a PS5 and they calling up like
spk_0
Sony and being like hi so I got I got the system where's the game where I can get my car stuck
spk_0
on the Empire State I just want a big fish to eat me and I want to befriend fishermen who give me
spk_0
a washcloth where well game is it where I it does feel like if they had just kept making uncharted
spk_0
games forever eventually Nate would get a truck stock on top of the Empire State Building and
spk_0
there'd be like a whole set piece and it would be amazing but you'd be like dude you stop going up
spk_0
there I love that it reminds me I have like a grudge against cool whip because of this commercial
spk_0
they had in the 90s do you remember this one where like there was a cookie that had cool up in it
spk_0
as like a sandwich and it was like it was like a chocolate chip cookie that had like M&M's in it
spk_0
and it would like fly out of the freezer and like I had a bunch of sprinkles on it and like floor
spk_0
on this kitchen and I was like I know the cookie can't fly but that looks incredible and I
spk_0
think I had an cool up that I finally had cool up and I was like this is underwhelming and not and
spk_0
it does not come to life bless your heart I love the amazing fruit CGI bears they're the reason
spk_0
damn Nick my A is quick with the cool whip he's got that's it insane for those the reason they have
spk_0
to put the small text on the bottom of these commercials I remember this commercial I'm being like
spk_0
this looks so good no you're the reason they have to be like the guns don't actually fire it's just
spk_0
the GI Joe you can't kill another GI Joe with it the cool whip just like it likes a flying it's like
spk_0
a UFO it looks like a crappier cool aid man why do you keep calling it the cool whip what do you
spk_0
want to call it a cool whip man it's like a little airplane it looks like oogie boogie from
spk_0
nightmare for Christmas it flies around and in my head it was photorealistic but I'm you know
spk_0
that's I feel like hindsight is not 2020 it's something else yeah he's just crappin sparkles
spk_0
and M&M's all over this kids cookie sandwich anyway that's how I feel about that I think that yeah
spk_0
it's maybe it's good that Sony's just blatantly false advertising things you can't do on PS5 but
spk_0
you can only do on PS5 sure yeah um I hope we get more games I hope we get more GTA games and
spk_0
hip-hip more games we're getting eaten by fish I think this sounds like a good time um do you
spk_0
think there'll be any cool whips to steal GTA 6 sorry I've had some cool whips bloodboard
spk_0
is there a cooler whip than a threaded cane I think not my friend take that Simon Belmont
spk_0
you playing anything good man no okay it's fair no I'm just I've been really busy and I've been
spk_0
playing it like a power watch simulator in my downtime just like it's like a dad yeah I
spk_0
we I like how we talk about how like yeah they don't make games like they used to but then
spk_0
the upside of that is like we don't play games like we used to either like I know the tastes have
spk_0
changed a great deal um I've been kind of jumping between a few different things uh and if I
spk_0
feel like if you went back 10 years and you're like all right Max goville here's what you're playing
spk_0
these days are you like here which of these are you most excited about and it's like all right there's
spk_0
battlefield six you run around and get shot by older boys who are mean to you on the microphone
spk_0
they yell at you for doing things poorly or ball pit where you watch you watch uh math happen
spk_0
with by bouncing things and it makes you feel good when you see the math or mega bonk which is like ball
spk_0
pit but even dumber where you're just run around and things come at you and then you watch math
spk_0
happen faster and you feel like oh look at the numbers going up I feel like I'm doing something but
spk_0
really you're just it's like watching popcorn cook um it's just it's just like a little like
spk_0
boop boop boop boop boop boop boop boop boop boop and you're like yeah there's that dopamine or
spk_0
I don't know the outer worlds too a thrilling sprawling RPG in outer space with a it's great sense of
spk_0
humor and awesome shooting and I tried to get into that and like that used to be my entire thing
spk_0
was I want to play like a cool big open story game with lots of choices and and I just it just
spk_0
I just bounced off it like I just cannot I don't know if I just don't have the the patients to the
spk_0
brain the brain capacity or whatever I'm just like let me go shoot stuff and watch math happen let
spk_0
Let me just, I can't I want to talk to anybody in space.
spk_0
I'll get yelled at by strangers before I talk to a fake person in the computer game.
spk_0
And I just, I don't know, it's weird because like that's our taste change.
spk_0
And no, I mean, this is, this is, this is bad of me to even say, but I, I, I cooked in
spk_0
her most nights.
spk_0
And usually after that, I, I do like a bunch of the cleaning and then my wife will tag
spk_0
in and clean up the rest.
spk_0
And last night, I would just, I was just like, I don't have it in me.
spk_0
And so I cooked in her.
spk_0
And then me and my kid sat on the couch and she played switch one and I played switch
spk_0
two.
spk_0
And in switch two, I spent 30 minutes power washing a roller rink.
spk_0
And my wife was 15 feet away cleaning every surface in our kitchen and our living room
spk_0
and doing all the dishes.
spk_0
And at just at the end, like I heard the last thing where they're like, they're all
spk_0
a rink of stunts clean.
spk_0
She like turned off the sink and walked over and she was like, that was a lot.
spk_0
And I was like, yeah, that's big.
spk_0
There was a big job.
spk_0
There's a disc, there was a disco ball.
spk_0
I had a client and she was like, the hell is wrong.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
I'm so sorry.
spk_0
I can't, I can't, I just had a veg out.
spk_0
I came out with this one.
spk_0
I just can't because I have a, I have like a power washer and I also my, my like side
spk_0
yard is just filthy.
spk_0
A bunch of like dead leaves and stuff.
spk_0
And something stinky happened back there because my dog was like, ooh, sick filth.
spk_0
And first thing this morning, he like ran out and just rubbed his, and he came in and he
spk_0
just looked like he hit a beard made of shit.
spk_0
And I just, and that was like, first thing this morning, I was like, I try to get the
spk_0
kid out of the door and like, I, yeah.
spk_0
So he's excited for Christmas.
spk_0
He's got the Santa Claus costume.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
So just, just, feculant Santa, looks like, yeah, like a rolled doll character, Santa Claus.
spk_0
It's just terrible.
spk_0
Mr. Twitt over here.
spk_0
But yeah, I should actually probably go bathe that dog and then power wash the filth out
spk_0
of the yard, the real yard, not the fake yard.
spk_0
Here's a ding noise.
spk_0
But yeah, do you own a roller rink?
spk_0
No.
spk_0
So I mean, think about attitude.
spk_0
I don't.
spk_0
Anyway, I will.
spk_0
I do want to give a shout out to something I enjoyed that felt very p.s.
spk_0
to adjacent, which was predator badlands.
spk_0
I saw that last night.
spk_0
That is a fun as hell Saturday morning cartoon that has just, it's also extremely violent.
spk_0
Don't be, don't be not scared off by the PG 13 rating because they, they, they,
spk_0
they do, they do plenty of, I loved reading that the reason it got a PG 13 rating was
spk_0
because there's no human blood in it.
spk_0
And human blood is what a thing that would tip it over to R, but there's just tons of
spk_0
violence otherwise.
spk_0
I don't even want to look at, I haven't even looked at this.
spk_0
I've seen this movie like two nights.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
No, I had such a good.
spk_0
It's, it's very fun.
spk_0
Yeah, I saw it with Greg Miller and Tim Getty's were there and they, but we're all just
spk_0
like hopping up and down outside like stupid little boys when it was over because it's
spk_0
just a good, a good time.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
And so go, go support your local predator.
spk_0
Not, you know, in the alien sense, not the, you know, there's like a guy in your
spk_0
street who has to introduce himself, go door to door, don't, don't give any attention.
spk_0
But yeah, on that note, I loved it.
spk_0
You made that guy a predator.
spk_0
He might just work for like the solar panel company.
spk_0
I hope not.
spk_0
I want that guy in my roof.
spk_0
I hear it.
spk_0
Sun run, dude.
spk_0
Two things.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
No, thank you.
spk_0
All right.
