We are out of here!
spk_0
This is baseball tonight, the podcast.
spk_0
Good morning.
spk_0
This is the baseball tonight podcast for Tuesday, October 7th, 2025.
spk_0
My name is Jorge Castillo.
spk_0
I am filling in for Buster Only for my apartment here in New York City
spk_0
where the Toronto Blue Jays will look to eliminate the New York Yankees
spk_0
and Game 3 of the American League Division series.
spk_0
We'll have that game on ESPN radio and our guy Tim Kirchit
spk_0
who's going to join us on the pilot later on will be on that broadcast.
spk_0
We'll start off with game 2, Dodgers, Philly's in Philadelphia last night
spk_0
where Blake's now had it rolling early until Amundo Sosa broke up
spk_0
his no-hitter in the fifth inning.
spk_0
I pitch.
spk_0
Swing a line or softly hit in the white center.
spk_0
That's down for Baysia.
spk_0
Sosa becomes the first fan to get in lock tonight against Blake Snell.
spk_0
The Philly's have a man on with two down in the fifth.
spk_0
The game remains scoreless until the seventh inning with Geekir and Endez
spk_0
had a slow roll at a shortstop trade turner
spk_0
whose throw home was just off target allowing Therosco and Endez to score
spk_0
with a nice slide.
spk_0
Later in the inning, we'll Smith deliver the dagger.
spk_0
And the pitch.
spk_0
Swing an aligned, driving a left field down for Baysia.
spk_0
Freeman is into score.
spk_0
Here comes Keekir and Endez, the throw home not in time.
spk_0
Two more runs score and the Dodgers grab a three nothing lead in the seventh.
spk_0
Philly's bats finally came alive in the ninth inning scoring three runs
spk_0
to make it a four-three game.
spk_0
First on trade turners, RBI single followed by Nick Casillanos is two run double.
spk_0
Ball off third.
spk_0
Reavuto leading his second.
spk_0
Here's the pitch.
spk_0
Swing a line, driving at a base hit in the left field.
spk_0
That will bring in Gomez into score.
spk_0
Reavuto is in a score throwing a second of the tag.
spk_0
He's safe.
spk_0
This is a one-run game in Philadelphia.
spk_0
But the Philly's rally was stifled when Bryson stopped, dropped the punt
spk_0
and the Dodgers executed a perfect will play to throw out Casillanos at third base.
spk_0
He turns to Bunt, drops it down to third.
spk_0
Up on the months he runs into third is the tag and a got him a third base.
spk_0
Boogie bets upended on the slide by Casillanos, but got the tag on him and a huge out there for on number one.
spk_0
A couple batters later, Dave Roberts goes to his new closer Roki Sasaki to close out.
spk_0
The Philly's and take a two-nothing lead as this series moves on to Los Angeles.
spk_0
After the game, our Jeff Passon spoke with Freddie Freeman.
spk_0
Freddie, that last play, how hairy did it feel for you there?
spk_0
It was pretty hairy. I saw him throw it down to the ground.
spk_0
I was like, oh boy, here we go.
spk_0
It was not a long hop and it's somewhat of a short hop and I was able to get it.
spk_0
But I barely held onto that one.
spk_0
A ninth inning full of tension, but Roki Sasaki again comes in and gets a big out for you guys at the end.
spk_0
What has he meant for this scene?
spk_0
Since he came back off his injury, it's a whole different picture.
spk_0
It's as big as the situation as you can get in right there getting thrown into that.
spk_0
Credit to our other guys getting some out there and our defense and the ninth inning was superb.
spk_0
So just an all-around good game, a little hairy at the end, but we got it done.
spk_0
Freddie, your pitching started with Blake's now seven-shotout innings against this Philly's lineup.
spk_0
What made him so effective today?
spk_0
He's just so good.
spk_0
I mean, we've been facing Blake for a long time and it's never a fun at bat.
spk_0
He had everything working, that changed up front to back.
spk_0
It's so hard for Rides to hit.
spk_0
Then he plays off the heater off of that.
spk_0
Throws into slider and curvy.
spk_0
He said everything working again tonight.
spk_0
And his useless dardo had retired.
spk_0
Seventeen in a row before you guys got to him in the seventh inning.
spk_0
What is it like when a pitcher is like that?
spk_0
And you know you got to put up a run.
spk_0
Yeah, I mean, two 40 pitchers tonight.
spk_0
Pitching a really, really good game.
spk_0
So we knew it was going to be a tough game.
spk_0
I mean, we're facing 96 and 99 from the left side with sliders and sweepers.
spk_0
Throwing and changing up to the right is two.
spk_0
So we were just trying to fight and claw once they all got that hit.
spk_0
And I was looking at it in a double and you know some things got to got it.
spk_0
And the two out hitting was huge for us in that inning.
spk_0
Now let's turn it over to the other game Monday night.
spk_0
Game two, Cobbs Brewers after the Brewers took game one.
spk_0
And it was looking good for the Cubs early.
spk_0
The one one swing and a high drive left field on its way out of here.
spk_0
Way out of here.
spk_0
Over the left field wall.
spk_0
Say a Suzuki clobbered it.
spk_0
And it is three nothing into cup fans making noise here at American Family Field.
spk_0
That three nothing lead though with short lived as Andrew Vaughn low key the acquisition of the year in baseball delivered his own three run bomb.
spk_0
To kick the pitch.
spk_0
Slang and high fly ball left field well struck.
spk_0
That's back half at the wall and it is gone.
spk_0
Out of here.
spk_0
Into the second deck.
spk_0
Andrew Vaughn of touch of all.
spk_0
And we're starting over tied at three.
spk_0
The Brewers took the lead in the third inning on William Contreras his solo home run.
spk_0
But it was Jackson Churro who was questionable going into the game with a hamstring injury delivering the final blow his own three run shot in the fourth inning.
spk_0
Field two swing and a fly ball center field.
spk_0
Pete Cohn struck back back of the track at the wall and it's out of here.
spk_0
Jackson Churro off the batter's eye and center field in the Brewers.
spk_0
Get a three run homer from the youngster and they now lead this game seven to three.
spk_0
Churro goes deep.
spk_0
And with that the Brewers took a game two seven three in the series now moves to Chicago from game three.
spk_0
And after the game our Jesse Rogers caught up with Jackson Churro.
spk_0
Jackson was there any doubt you would play in this game based on your hamstring.
spk_0
Jackson Abia Duda, could you leave a hug on it the whole day for two hunts three?
spk_0
No, I don't want to say that.
spk_0
I feel good and I will try to help my best to get the team to what I need.
spk_0
No, like I said, I've been feeling good and so my mission from the beginning was to go out there and give my best and give whatever the team needed.
spk_0
Well the best way to take care of a hamstring is to jog around the bases, right?
spk_0
Tell me about turning on 101 mile an hour fastball.
spk_0
The best way to take care of the hamstring is to get it out of that pitch and to get 101.
spk_0
No, no, no, I'm looking for a good pitch for the second race.
spk_0
Thanks to God, I got a great bat and I'm going to enjoy it.
spk_0
Yeah, you know, really right there I'm just looking for a good pitch to hit to bring in the runner from second.
spk_0
So thanks to God that I was able to find one and you know, push across three there.
spk_0
Up next we'll have Tim Kirchin who will be on the broadcast tonight for Blue Jays Yankees Game 3
spk_0
on ESPN Radio.
spk_0
Get tickets now.
spk_0
I'm here with the great Tim Kirchin who will be at Yankee Stadium tonight for Yankees Blue Jays for Game 3 on ESPN Radio.
spk_0
Tim, how are you?
spk_0
I'm well for hey, I am I'm in New York City for a playoff game.
spk_0
Doesn't get a whole lot better than that.
spk_0
That's for sure. And you were also in Toronto with the crew over the weekend Saturday, Sunday games, one in two.
spk_0
Toronto just putting it on the Yankees all weekend.
spk_0
It was startling to see.
spk_0
First of all, the environment up there, I was really taken aback by how just the atmosphere there.
spk_0
What did you think about that?
spk_0
It was tremendous. That Toronto crowd is great.
spk_0
And I go back to the early 90s when they won the World Series in 92 and 93.
spk_0
Those people are invested.
spk_0
They are engaged when this team is really good.
spk_0
You should have seen that place rock, you know, 35 years ago.
spk_0
Well, that is back.
spk_0
And Ernie Clement, one of their really good infielders told me it has been absolutely insane in this place for the last month.
spk_0
But it's been more than that.
spk_0
It's the whole second half of the season.
spk_0
And this crowd has really taken over that ballpark, which by the way looks so much better since they kind of refurbished it.
spk_0
It is a really cool place. And hooray, the other thing is, you know, we walk back to our hotel after the game.
spk_0
And there are thousands of Blue Jays fans like surrounding us as we're walking back.
spk_0
And nobody's screaming at anybody.
spk_0
Nobody's throwing stuff around.
spk_0
They're a very polite, respectful crowd as well as being passionate.
spk_0
I can't even begin to tell you how impressed I was with the entire atmosphere in Toronto.
spk_0
It was really good and it was really cool.
spk_0
Yeah. And it was all the way through the end.
spk_0
Both games were blowouts for the most part.
spk_0
And I was on the field doing a couple post game interviews after each game.
spk_0
And after both games, the place was still full.
spk_0
They were doing the on field interviews for television and Traeys Savage was getting these wars.
spk_0
And he's addressing the crowd.
spk_0
It was a really great, great scene there in Toronto.
spk_0
It was also very hot.
spk_0
Tim, I don't know if it was hot for you, but it was hot.
spk_0
Unseasonally warm for October in Toronto.
spk_0
Yes, well aware.
spk_0
I told Ravi, did the radio call Eddie, Ravi and I, of course, I told Ravi like in the ninth inning on the air.
spk_0
I said, nobody has left this place.
spk_0
And it was, you know, it was a 12-to-nothing game at one point.
spk_0
And everybody stayed to the end.
spk_0
It was again, a very festive atmosphere.
spk_0
Of course, that's going to change for the Blue Jays tonight, where they get to Yankee Stadium.
spk_0
But that's the beauty of home road.
spk_0
Yeah, Tim.
spk_0
So down to all the Yankees are.
spk_0
Game one, Kevin Gossman had his way for, you know, five innings, just Savage for five in a third, no-hittings.
spk_0
How do the Yankees get out of this whole time?
spk_0
How do they, you know, going back home now, they're one in eight at Rodgers Center this year, four in two at Yankee Stadium against the Blue Jays.
spk_0
How do the Yankees get out of this whole?
spk_0
Well, they get out of the hole by starting to score some runs.
spk_0
My goodness, the Blue Jays scored 23 runs in the first two games of the series.
spk_0
No team has ever scored that many runs in the first two games of any playoff series ever.
spk_0
And they scored 20 unanswered runs in this series between seventh inning and seventh inning or whatever it is.
spk_0
Yes, Yankees got to make a, they got a score and they got a score early and give Carlos Ragnan something to work with.
spk_0
But again, the, the home field changes everything and where anyone who's watched the season recognizes, this has been the damn season I think I've ever seen.
spk_0
Just when you think a team is terrible, it gets good.
spk_0
Just when you think a team is good, it gets terrible.
spk_0
So anyone who thinks, oh my gosh, this series is over has not been watching the 2025 season.
spk_0
It is the most unpredictable season that I've ever seen.
spk_0
I have been wrong 10,000 times this year when I say, look at the Mariners.
spk_0
They have no chance to make the playoffs and then they win the division.
spk_0
I said the same thing about the Blue Jays.
spk_0
This is why baseball is the best game.
spk_0
Just when you think you understand that you realize that you don't.
spk_0
I think a great example was the other night in Seattle, right?
spk_0
They lose the Mariners lose game one.
spk_0
Everyone is like, okay, well, Tarrick School was starring game two.
spk_0
It's going to be two-oh Detroit and the Mariners win that game.
spk_0
When we all assumed it was going to be two-oh going to the Detroit.
spk_0
Right. And Jorge, I had to pick all the divisions like we all do and all the, all the, all the, the series.
spk_0
And so I picked the Dodgers to beat the Phillies.
spk_0
And then I had to explain myself like, you're the only one that thinks the Dodgers are going to beat the Phillies.
spk_0
And I'm thinking, how should I have to explain myself when the defending world champions?
spk_0
And there is no explanation for anything that has happened this year.
spk_0
That's why it's been such a fascinating and beautiful baseball season.
spk_0
I'm surprised you were getting craft for picking the Dodgers.
spk_0
I thought the Dodgers, you know, this is the, the Goliath.
spk_0
Well, I've been watching them play and you looked at their roster.
spk_0
They're really good. That's not to say the Phillies aren't.
spk_0
And that doesn't mean the Phillies can't come back and win this series.
spk_0
It's just I was a little taken aback.
spk_0
Hey, what you think they can beat the Phillies?
spk_0
Yes, I think anything could happen in 2025. That's the point.
spk_0
So it might take on that series and might take on the Dodgers in general this October is.
spk_0
They need to take a page out of the 2019 Nationals pitching plan and playbook.
spk_0
The 2019 Nationals super talented roster.
spk_0
They used about seven or eight pitchers the entire postseason.
spk_0
And I think that's that's what the Dodgers need to do.
spk_0
They need to go. They got Blake Snow who looks, I mean, he looked dominant last night.
spk_0
He had no hit stuff. His daughter in his fastball glove side.
spk_0
He looked great. You got Yamamoto. You got Glass now.
spk_0
You got Shohei O'Connor. You got Clayne Kershaw in the bullpen.
spk_0
You got Emma Sheehan in the bullpen. I think the Dodgers need to do what the national sort of did in 2019 is.
spk_0
Hey, and everybody else, you're getting mop up slash emergency duty.
spk_0
You're not, you are not going to be, you're not going to pitch.
spk_0
Right.
spk_0
Hoi, you called it perfectly. This is how you win this time of year.
spk_0
You just jump on the backs of your best guys and say, you're going to pitch as much as you possibly can.
spk_0
And we're going to win this way. And the Roki Sasaki element is just amazing to me.
spk_0
You know, he had a really difficult beginning of the season.
spk_0
And they're looking around going, you know, this guy is as good as we thought.
spk_0
Then he goes on the aisle. He comes back. He pitches two innings.
spk_0
Strikes out four guys. Throwes that amazing split finger fastball.
spk_0
And everyone said, whoa, what is this? And then he pitches in.
spk_0
And then they said he's going to get leverage innings in the postseason.
spk_0
And we said, you mean he's going to pitch the ninth? And they said, yeah, he's going to pitch the ninth.
spk_0
And the first game he pitched in the postseason in the ninth inning, he looked like a closure like this is their answer.
spk_0
This is the guy who's going to fill in the gap. And at least so far he has.
spk_0
It's nice to be the Dodgers when, you know, you spend $73 million on Tanner Scott.
spk_0
And he's nowhere to be found in October. And you don't need him because you have Roki Sasaki just sitting there waiting.
spk_0
It's amazing. They have the deepest roster of any team in the major leagues.
spk_0
And now it's mostly healthy. And that makes them exceptionally dangerous.
spk_0
And in the other series there in the National League, the Milwaukee Brewers.
spk_0
Have you ever heard someone get, first of all, let's start off with the managerial situation there,
spk_0
which I find fascinating. Craig Council going up against his old team, his mentor over there in the other dugout in Milwaukee.
spk_0
And he's getting booed relentlessly. He's he's he's hearing it. And that's a robbery.
spk_0
You know, I'm over here in New York. It's Yankee's red socks Yankee's mats, you know, the West Coast.
spk_0
You got Dodgers, Padres Dodgers giants, Brewers Cubs. That is a heated robbery as we all know.
spk_0
And you add the Craig Council element. And that to me is just a fascinating series to watch to two very two teams that do it very differently.
spk_0
You know, the Cubs obviously have some money that they spent.
spk_0
Those a lot of people say they should spend more. And then you got the Brewers.
spk_0
You're kind of doing it with this crew. The way they play baseball.
spk_0
Everyone seems to love the way they they're brand of ball.
spk_0
What do you what do you make of that series and all and all that's going on there?
spk_0
Yeah, I love the brand of ball that the Brewers play.
spk_0
And to me, Jorge, this is the National League of Quivalent of the way that the Blue Jays play the game.
spk_0
They put the ball and play more than anybody else in the National League.
spk_0
They run the bases. They take the action to the defense.
spk_0
They've stolen more bases than any team in the National League.
spk_0
They play elite defense, especially at several different positions.
spk_0
They're starting pitching is really good.
spk_0
Anyone who doesn't believe in the Blue, in the Brewers hasn't watched them play.
spk_0
I love their style of play.
spk_0
And one of the Blue Jays guys told me when we played the Brewers in a series this year,
spk_0
it was like the best baseball that you could possibly find because of the style of play of both of these teams.
spk_0
So many teams out there are so dependent on the home run and strike out at such a remarkably high rate.
spk_0
These two teams don't do that, which makes it so difficult to match up against them.
spk_0
So the Cubs really got their hands full.
spk_0
And as far as the Pat Murphy Craig Council dynamic, I'm with you.
spk_0
He is the professor Pat Murphy.
spk_0
He taught Craig Council how to manage in the Major League.
spk_0
Craig Council is really good at it.
spk_0
It's just that the professor right now is one step ahead as of everyone, the way he's managed the last two years.
spk_0
Yeah, you mentioned the Blue Jays again.
spk_0
Let's turn it back there to Blue Jays Yankees.
spk_0
They don't strike out a lot.
spk_0
We saw a lot of pop this weekend.
spk_0
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. that Grand Slam.
spk_0
I'm first of all the home run in the first inning in game one, sort of set the tone for the weekend.
spk_0
And then you got Sunday that Grand Slam was sort of the, as Louis Barlan said after the game,
spk_0
that was sort of the nail in the coffin, even though the Yankees showed some life later on.
spk_0
You know, made a nine, nothing there.
spk_0
Yesterday at the Yankees workout, Aaron Boone said that he expects to make a couple, maybe one or two lineup changes.
spk_0
And I think the obvious one is Paul Goldschmidt starts over Brent Rice at first base against Shane Bieber.
spk_0
Goldschmidt's three for six in his career against Bieber.
spk_0
Rice has never faced him.
spk_0
Bieber has drastic splits against Rides.
spk_0
This season is pretty neutral overall.
spk_0
And actually I caught up with Paul Goldschmidt at the workout and I asked him about his future.
spk_0
He's a free agent after this year.
spk_0
He's 38 years old, a potential future Hall of Famer.
spk_0
And he said he hasn't thought about that yet.
spk_0
This could be his last game in a Yankee uniform.
spk_0
What do you make of the changes?
spk_0
I mean, what couldn't Aaron Boone here do here to sort of get this line of going?
spk_0
What needs to happen for this lineup to get going?
spk_0
Well, they have to start to hit.
spk_0
And Goldschmidt has to be in the lineup.
spk_0
Now look, Ben Rice had a really good year.
spk_0
He's a great kid and he's learning to play first base.
spk_0
And again, he did not make an egregious mistake at all in game two.
spk_0
But there were two balls hit to him.
spk_0
One was kind of the swinging bun where he broke back on that ball.
spk_0
And the other ball that went down the line to his left.
spk_0
It's possible.
spk_0
Paul Goldschmidt, a gold glove first baseman still,
spk_0
would have made both of those plays a little differently.
spk_0
So for defense alone, you have to play Paul Goldschmidt at first base.
spk_0
And when you're facing a great split like you saw from Kevin Goswin
spk_0
and then you saw from Trayy Savage.
spk_0
Sometimes the better option is to put right handed hitters in there.
spk_0
Because that split, you know, can really is more susceptible against left handed pitching than right handed pitching.
spk_0
So I am positive that Goldschmidt will start at first base in game one.
spk_0
That may be the only change.
spk_0
Maybe they'll catch Ben Rice in game three.
spk_0
I'm not sure.
spk_0
But I would put my veteran guys in there at this point because they've been there before.
spk_0
And you have to accept accentuate defense when you're playing against the blue jays who are an elite defensive team.
spk_0
Tim, so Aaron Judges hitting 444 in this postseason.
spk_0
He has an OPS over a thousand.
spk_0
But he doesn't have a home run.
spk_0
And his double the other day came and you know, game one when the the Yankees were behinds.
spk_0
And his other eight hits are singles on the other side.
spk_0
We're seeing Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
spk_0
You know, hit that grand slam and hit that big home run.
spk_0
Aaron Judges struck out in that in that big moment in game one with the bases loaded.
spk_0
What do you make of Aaron Judges postseason thus far?
spk_0
And sort of there's obviously the narrative around Aaron Judges every October.
spk_0
What do you make of this postseason thus far?
spk_0
Well, he's been good this postseason.
spk_0
He doesn't hate, but he hasn't there's no buts.
spk_0
He's been good this postseason.
spk_0
But in today's game, if you don't do damage, you're not doing your job.
spk_0
And is that right? I think it's wrong.
spk_0
But that's the way we look at things.
spk_0
Just because no one in front of him has done anything and no one behind him has done anything.
spk_0
And Aaron Judges gets to its every game.
spk_0
It's hard to be critical.
spk_0
But there's no way around this.
spk_0
His OPS in the regular season.
spk_0
Is 350 points higher than that in the postseason for him.
spk_0
That is staggering.
spk_0
So yes, it sounds ridiculous.
spk_0
Aaron Judges needs to do something in the postseason.
spk_0
We all understand that.
spk_0
He needs one big bolt.
spk_0
And I'm telling you, if he hits home run number 21 in the first inning this year for the Yankees to start this thing in game three, everything changes.
spk_0
Because it's like when you're too young for this or a but what Dr. J used to play basketball.
spk_0
What it wasn't just that he scored, but when he dunked on you early, it's like the whole crowd, the whole team went crazy.
spk_0
It's the same idea when judge hits a home or like, oh my gosh, the captain just hit one 450 feet.
spk_0
Everything changes.
spk_0
That's what the Yankees need tonight is a bolt early from their star.
spk_0
And that could change this thing right away.
spk_0
And if the Yankees went game three, game four will be Cam Schliplers game and something that's fascinating me here down the stretch of the regular season into the postseason Tim.
spk_0
And I wonder your perspective on this as someone who's covered the game as long as you have.
spk_0
We have seen young pictures come up and not just be ready, but they've been thrown into huge, huge games and they've done well.
spk_0
We started with Nolan McLean down the stretch for the Mets, Peyton Toley and Boston, Connally early got a start last week in the wild card series.
spk_0
Jacob Mizorowski looked great last night.
spk_0
He's a guy who came on made the all-star team after what like three, four or five outings and Cam Schlipler did what he did last week and Treyis Ab is did what he did on Saturday.
spk_0
I'm just wondering, you know, I've asked guys about this.
spk_0
Why do we think that these pictures are coming up and doing so well so early?
spk_0
And just two questions for you.
spk_0
Have you ever seen this, is this a new thing as a recent sea bias?
spk_0
Am I just, you know, thinking, oh, I don't know, like I just can't remember another time that this happened?
spk_0
Or is this something that's relatively different than what we've seen before?
spk_0
And why do you think that is?
spk_0
I've never seen anything quite like this.
spk_0
I mean, Cam Schliplers performance the other night was ridiculous, numbers wise.
spk_0
But poise wise, how do you explain somebody that young being that good in the biggest game of the season?
spk_0
And Treyis Ab is the same thing.
spk_0
Ravi and I talked to him before game one.
spk_0
So in getting him ready for game two, he looked like he was just going to pitch a game in Kansas City in July.
spk_0
Like that was, he was so ready for this.
spk_0
So we asked George Springer about this and he said, the players today are so much better and so much more prepared now when they come up than I was.
spk_0
He said, when I first came up, he said, you know, when I was in triple air, whatever he goes, I'm living in an apartment with five other guys.
spk_0
Guys are sleeping on the floor.
spk_0
We are sharing a car.
spk_0
We are eating it subway six days a week just to make ends meet.
spk_0
He said, now the guys get to the big leagues and they are so big, so strong, so fast, so polished.
spk_0
He said, and when they walk in the clubhouse, there's a chef there to cook them food.
spk_0
He said, this is one reason why there's so much more ready than we were.
spk_0
And George Springer is only 34. He's not 64.
spk_0
And it's really, I'm just really struck by how ready these guys are.
spk_0
When we looked at Traeus Average and said, all right, so you've made three major league starts.
spk_0
And now you're going to pitch game two of the playoffs and he looked at us and he goes, I can't wait for this. I can't wait.
spk_0
He was so ready. Most kids would be scared to death.
spk_0
The kids today are not and maybe the dreaded internet has something to do with it.
spk_0
They are so worldly. They know how things operate because of the information they get that they are.
spk_0
Absolutely prepared when they get here and we are seeing it, especially with the two young starting pictures in this series.
spk_0
Yeah, and one thing that stood out with your savages the day before before game one, you know, the next day starting picture, the next game starting picture talks to the media before the previous game.
spk_0
And your savage goes in there and he looks very much 22 years old. He is a young, young cat.
spk_0
He looks at it and he looks at it and he's in there and he just drops this.
spk_0
I'm built for this and he dropped it in a way that was not arrogant.
spk_0
It wasn't like, oh, this kid's cocky. It was just sort of matter of factly.
spk_0
Like, hey, I'm built for this. And this is a guy who a year ago was drafted in the first round.
spk_0
I think it was 20th overall out of East Carolina. His first game this year, Tim, his first start was against the Jupiter Hammerheads in front of a paid attendance of 312.
spk_0
27 people, you know, in April, he walks six people that game. He walks six guys in three and two thirds.
spk_0
I think it was that game in Jupiter. Then you know, fast forward six months later, he's pitching a Toronto in front of a sell out crowd against the New York Yankees.
spk_0
And that's a means his mind blowing this the maturation process. Right.
spk_0
So John Schneider, the Blue James manager told us he didn't even see tray savage in spring trading.
spk_0
Never saw him throw because the guy was so far out on a backfield. He never even saw him.
spk_0
And now he's starting game two of the playoffs. So John said he said, well, I watched him on film.
spk_0
And I saw a video of him. There's a lesson here where hey, and he said, but when he showed up and I met him and then I watched him throw, it was completely different in person.
spk_0
And the lesson here is we're trying to scout people based on video and based on film and stuff like that or statistics on a page.
spk_0
You never know what somebody's like until you shake their hand and look them in the eye and you realize, wow, he's even taller than I thought he was.
spk_0
And then you watch him throw a bullpen from that high angle with that straight over the top that changes everything.
spk_0
So please, as we scout players, let's meet him first. Let's watch him throw and then let's make a determination whether they're ready or not ready for this.
spk_0
Yeah, that reminds me of a story. I think it was September, August, September when Jonah Tongue was brought up by the Metz.
spk_0
Jonah Tongue was one of the three young pictures that the Metz just relied on down the stretch. It was Brennan Sprote, Jonah Tongue, Nolan McLean.
spk_0
And Metz manager Carlos Mendoza, he's asked about, hey, when did you first meet Jonah Tongue?
spk_0
He's like, well, I met him in the backfield. He was a ballboy for one of the triple A games.
spk_0
And we thought for 10 minutes. And that was it. And he showed up at a city field and pitched.
spk_0
Yeah, this is how the game works today. And this is what is so good about it is that you get one look at a guy and everything might change so good.
spk_0
And it's amazing in October, you know, the Savage Diablete did in game two. That could be the difference in the series and the blue J is getting to the ALCS for the first time since 2016.
spk_0
And it came to their gets a chance in game four. That could be the reason why the Yankees, you know, one of the reasons why the Yankees get back to ALCS get out of this old to haul.
spk_0
We're seeing these young guys and these big moments, these big games, 22, 23, 24 year olds.
spk_0
And to me, it's just, it's a super fascinating sort of evolution here, immediately baseball.
spk_0
Well, Tim, I'll see you at Yankees Stadium later today. I appreciate you dealing with my, you know, rookie, my rookie handling of the situation.
spk_0
My first time doing this filling in for Buster. I look forward to seeing you tonight. It's always a pleasure talking to you whether it's here virtually in a podcast or in person at a ballpark. Thank you, Tim.
spk_0
Thank you for a you were as good as trade savage way to go.
spk_0
Zero zero nine six.
spk_0
This is the numbers game with Sarah Langs.
spk_0
Sarah Langs is a reporter and producer for Major League Baseball. She also distats for us here at ESPN.
spk_0
And she often plays the numbers game here on the baseball tonight podcast.
spk_0
She's doing it every episode throughout the playoffs. And here is today's three to one.
spk_0
Number three.
spk_0
The Dodgers have scored at least four runs in 13 consecutive postseason games that's tied with the 1970 and 71 Orioles for the longest such streak in postseason history.
spk_0
Number two.
spk_0
The Cubs Brothers game was the first game in postseason history where each team hit a three run home run or Grand Slam in the first inning.
spk_0
Number one.
spk_0
Jacob Mizorowski threw 31 pitches at 100 miles per hour on Monday. That's the most by a pitcher in a postseason game under pitch tracking, which is since 2008.
spk_0
Blit your tweets already.
spk_0
Jorge Blit your tweets for a Tuesday.
spk_0
The Brewers fans. They're fired up.
spk_0
They the email does bleach your tweets at gmail.com. Dan writes I'm a die hard Bruce fan emailing you during a pitching change in game two.
spk_0
Have you ever heard of a former manager or player getting booed as badly as Greg council does in Milwaukee every time that man touched the field.
spk_0
It's an echoing course of booze. Thanks for everything. You guys do all hang up and listen.
spk_0
Go crew. You talked a little bit about this with Tim.
spk_0
It just he just gets murdered every time and Pat Murphy is pulling all the strings. Have you ever heard as thunder is booing as Craig council gets Milwaukee?
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
The one answer in my experience covering the game is Matt Manning Machado every time it goes to LA.
spk_0
It was like a three block as your guy Manning Machado.
spk_0
I know back to your Baltimore.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Baltimore days. So every time he goes back to Los Angeles, I was there when he when he you know when he was there for the Dodgers in 2018.
spk_0
They picked him up to the train deadline. They go to the world series.
spk_0
He strikes out for the final out on his on his knee against Chris.
spk_0
Chris sale. He then signs with the Padres and has sort of you know he leads that resurgence in San Diego and every time he goes to LA, he gets booed like crazy.
spk_0
And I think part of the reason why is I'm not sure if he saw this but there's a viral video that went around when he I think he said like I'll bet anything that the Padres won a world series before the Dodgers that never happened and obviously the Dodgers won a world series.
spk_0
There's a lot going on there. So that happens a lot and I imagine I didn't cover this but I imagine when Johnny Damon for example left Boston to sign with the Yankees.
spk_0
I'm sure I wasn't at Yankees stay or at Fenway Park when he returned but I'm sure every time he went to Fenway, it wasn't necessarily great.
spk_0
So those are two examples that come to my head. Man, a Machado and LA. He's not he's not love there at all.
spk_0
The Johnny Damon one is good. I'm sure the first time I'll have to look that up on YouTube or if it hopefully it's there. I mean the first time he showed up at Fenway Park, he had to have just gotten abused that must have been ugly.
spk_0
You shaved the beard too for the Yankees. Oh, yeah 2006 was was one he he returned to Fenway at one point in 2006. If he I'm sure I would and then I go too well.
spk_0
Yeah, haircut and beardless a completely different guy. All right, or you grew up in Worcester, Massachusetts. I am a New England transplant.
spk_0
I often drive straight through Worcester, Massachusetts, but I got to know if I'm going to Worcester, Massachusetts for an afternoon, a couple hours. What would you suggest that that one does?
spk_0
Well, it's a total.
spk_0
Yeah, if you go during the summer catch a who sucks game Polar Park is beautiful. Great job.
spk_0
I'm not going to drive the people there. It's a brand new ballpark a few years old, you know Worcester, sorry to puttuck it.
spk_0
The pa socks are there for a long time. Worcester stole your team. Worcester Polar Park is really nice. I'll say that.
spk_0
Okay, if you're into studies, there's a lot of good colleges in Worcester. Maybe you maybe you enroll at one of the many many the colleges there.
spk_0
Holy cross. Where are we going to lunch in Worcester?
spk_0
We're going to lunch in Worcester. My mom's house. You know, you want some good Puerto Rican food. She got you a Husker and Duelis and boy, you'll be so.
spk_0
But there's there's this hot dogs by Coney Island. That's really good in downtown Worcester right by actually close by Polar Park.
spk_0
There's lots of doing Worcester. There's lots of it. It's bars downtown. Good spots.
spk_0
Yeah, but go during the summer catch a game at a who sucks game for real though. Those games are really they're really fun to do a good job there.
spk_0
Good food, good beer. So do that during the summer. If you ever if you ever want to stay for whatever reason.
spk_0
I'm always intrigued by by fit and field. We're holy cross place football. It's a pretty interesting looking stadium.
spk_0
So there you go. Fall time activities at the Worcester board of tourism. They need to hop on here. We need to get a check or something.
spk_0
Jorge, thank you so much for hosting today. You did a great job. It was a new experience for you. How would you rate your time on the baseball tonight?
spk_0
Podcasts out of 10. I love it out of 10. I appreciate you Taylor. Thanks for putting up with me. I know it's buster. Hey, busters of that busters of the best at this.
spk_0
I am I am. I don't know if I was trait of savage. I don't want to blow any one up here another rookie. I was probably a lesser rookie.
spk_0
Someone who's probably a little more forgettable. But I tried my best and I appreciate you guys having me on and let me do this.
spk_0
Thanks for listening guys. Have a great day. Buster will be back tomorrow.
