First hopefully they both lose. We need to redeem ourselves after being embarrassed,

publicly and privately last season. Yes. We got that coming. But first, Elliot Friedman,

I got into Edmonton late Monday night. The air was a little lighter here than when you and I

extended upon this town a few weeks back at the outset of training camp.

Conor McDavid, it was confirmed Monday morning, two year extension and the AAV stays the exact

same as it has been the previous seven years here in Edmonton. $12.5 million doesn't change a

thing there in that regard two additional years beyond this season and the kind of bargain you

can't find in any grocery store or hardware store flyer ever in this country. Elliot,

one of the best deals going. So how did we get here? You said on Monday's pod we were going to

get clarity this week. We didn't have to wait very long to get it. I like your hardware store

analogy because McDavid had the hammer and he didn't use it. Oh,

and the first game of our double header is Montreal Toronto and the second game of our double

header is Calgary Edmonton and I can only imagine what the ovation is going to be like for McDavid.

everybody wait a little bit here he created doubt and an extension at any length or dollar value

becomes a big victory for the oilers and their fans just because of the way this process played out

and maybe they won't be thrilled about the term but they will be ecstatic about the AAV

and I think what we should do Kyle is we should set an over under for the length of the ovation he

think everybody was being super careful and I just assumed that the person who told me made a mistake

and so I mean the thing is is that I mean there was a lot of cross-bass commentary there was a lot

of jokes about koai Leonard and tree planting but I think what there is most of all is respects.

The salaries are going to a new stratosphere. We're going to have more 10 million players

than we've ever had. They're going to start coming younger and younger more of them than ever

and I always forget which one swims against the grain? Is it the salmon or the tuna?

Okay so McDavid is the salmon against an army of tuna. He's going the other way and I just think

it and he said you know it's not Conor McDavid it's not Conor McDavid it's not his responsibility

to take less. It's not it shouldn't be on him. You know it's not his fault that Edmonton's got a

bunch of guys making a ton of money and therefore he shouldn't he shouldn't take his 17 or 20 whatever

he gets and I said first of all it's McDavid's life it's McDavid's choice ultimately he decides what

he wants to do and what makes himself happy and secondly you can't say there and say you're all

about winning and then take a deal that doesn't allow you to win and this guy's like well that's the

oldest problem it's not his problem and I said you can see that in a lab you can see that in a

classroom you can't always say that in real life these are real world situations these aren't

logic problems in a book or in grade 10 math sometimes you have to make concessions and bend things

and you know I was reminded McDavid did this the last time too his salary was supposed to be 13.3

and he cut it to 12 and a half and there were people back then who said it's not you who should

cut and he's like I'm doing this and when he makes up his mind good luck changing it but I just

think the respect factor that he will get for this and you know he's for the next three years the

others know they've got three years to take a big run at it with McDavid in his prime and no

matter what happens if they succeed it's a statue it's bugging a statue anyway but if he succeeds

it's an even bigger statue and if he goes somewhere else no Euler fan is going to complain but even

if it doesn't work Kyle no Euler fan can complain even the hardest of hardcore Euler fan

is going to look after this and they're going to say you know what because at the end of this he'll

be there 13 years he's given them 13 years he's been paid under market nobody can begrudge this guy

McDavid for granted I think he's too loyal to that group of players not to sign let it play out

first overall picks this century that have won the Stanley Cup where they've been selected

and six of those guys are going to the Hall of Fame Crosby, Flurry, Ovechkin, Stamcoes, McKinnen,

Patrick Kane and then there's Aaron Eckblad you don't think that he looks at that on some level

like I think he's much more concerned about victory than legacy but I I would think if I was in his shoes

on some level you're looking at that look at all the number one overall picks who've won

where they were drafted and look at who those guys are

like a bunch of those guys a lot of those guys are going to the Hall of Fame a lot of those

guys are cornerstones in the history of their franchise if not the cornerstone in the history of

their franchise I would think for a guy like McDavid that resonates with you

yeah overall overall I think what he taught them sorry Kyle was don't take me for granted

it was a very good reminder and I think for all the talk as we have learned over the years how much

of an influence Sydney Crosby was on him when he was young growing up I didn't see all the

comparables right away when he first came into the league two different circumstances to understand

it but as his career has gone on like you're seeing more like you mentioned the the Crosby

comparison in this contract that he took you're seeing a little more

Crosbyism's out of Connor yeah as the career is going on here it's kind of neat

the in season cup from them and on and on that day they win the game they begin their count of days

until the next game that they play so over the course of the season the in season cup could make
