spk_0
When you think about motion regulation, we're not going to choose an adaptive strategy which
spk_0
is more effortful to use unless you think there's a good outcome. Avoid it's as easier,
spk_0
ignoring as easier, denials easier, complex problem solving, takes effort.

spk_0
love and support five time NBA All Star four time all NBA 13 year pro welcome to the show Spencer
spk_0
Heyway. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Retired players of your era. What do
spk_0
you guys think about just the media and how freely players could not not only speak, how freely they
spk_0
can move the type of money they can get, the ability to to to to come in the NBA at a certain time.
spk_0
What are what are your guys' thoughts and what are your thoughts in particular on that? Well my thoughts
spk_0
on it is I am the guy who sued the NBA, the NC2A and the Denver Rockets of the ABA all the way to
spk_0
the Supreme Court so that they could get this ruling so that you guys can make the kind of money.
spk_0
So you could come into the league when you were qualified rather than sitting in a college for
spk_0
four years making university rich. So yeah I was that. I was jack. That's right. I mean obviously
spk_0
amazing and I really want to kind of dig into that because I don't think people on to know you
spk_0
understand your significance. Not only in your time your ability to play the game but what you were
spk_0
doing off the court. You were really one of the first you were really one of the pillars that
spk_0
really helped fight against a system that it wasn't ready to see that and you won. Yeah what kind
spk_0
of shit did you go through though outside of that why you were doing that? While I was doing it the
spk_0
the first round of the of the case is when I sued the NBA for the rights to play because I had
spk_0
one more year left in college on my eligibility and the NBA said no you can't come in until the
spk_0
fourth year. I said I just finished the ABA where I was the rookie of the year MVP of the league MVP
spk_0
of the All Star game and I averaged 30 and 20 at 19 so it was only two players who ever did that
spk_0
back pro basketballers myself and Will Chamberlain but Will was a little bit older and I was 19
spk_0
turning 20 so it was a speed bomb but back up a second they were all cool with it when
spk_0
Karim and other guys backed out of the 68 Olympics and they said well we got a 18 year old down here
spk_0
at this junior college that could come in and play in the Olympics and save us in the Olympics so
spk_0
I went and said yeah I'll save you set a record that lasted for 44 years in the Olympics the most
spk_0
points and most rebounds and the most blocks so mellow got the points Kevin Durrell Katie that's
spk_0
right yeah he got it and who got the rebound and block still stand no I think David Robinson
spk_0
had the rebound then Charles Barkley finished second to me and field goal percentage but long time
spk_0
well so back up one second so you said you were were you playing in the ABA why you're still in college
spk_0
no no no no I left college okay and that was a big a big commotion because all of a sudden
spk_0
the ABA was allowing me to come and play and Hannah Storm's father Mike Storm who was the
spk_0
public relations person for the ABA when the university says well he's violating and breaking
spk_0
all the rules we gonna like sue the ABA gonna shut them down blah blah blah he got up at the press
spk_0
conference and said what we're doing here is we are allowing Hayward to play because he's in
spk_0
dire need is called a hardship rule because his mother and his family was still picking cotton
spk_0
in wild civil city missus for $2 a day and he said we're gonna give him reparations so the whole
spk_0
media just shut down oh god so we're gonna let him play and so that's how I ended up playing in
spk_0
the ABA there I was a test case and right after that test case we had Julius Irving George
spk_0
Gordon all the guys so you were the initial you opened the door to that too speak at the time
spk_0
although the actually I don't I want to call the NBA the destination back thing because I don't
spk_0
know but the ABA was just as good if not better yeah then the NBA if I'm not yeah because we had
spk_0
the young players we had the young energy we had we had style they were wearing blue and gray
spk_0
we were like pink purples you know froze yeah so it was a different kind of game and then we
spk_0
were open up because we were playing an open floor games where they were walk walk it up the floor
spk_0
boom boom stuff like that there's any truth to you dodging golf balls to get well in Mississippi you
spk_0
so break that down because I couldn't believe it well what happened unbelievable what happened was
spk_0
there was the assassination of John F Kennedy okay and when we wasn't working in the cotton fields
spk_0
you know we would work at the golf courts as caddies and so these Yahoo said dang going at boys
spk_0
we're gonna have some fun today so they lined up all of us in the young kids out on the golf
spk_0
fields this time I was 12 maybe and these are grown men these are grown men yeah yeah yeah and so my
spk_0
younger brother Floyd and his friend buddy and so they were we were all a lot in line of ducking
spk_0
the balls and then when the ball came and it was driving it was off some driving rain so they
spk_0
would drive at us and we were rolling and the ball would hit you in the back you roll over with it
spk_0
my friend buddy didn't he got clock and it's a and it's here and he was never right really one on
spk_0
but that was part of the putting us in place because we were like happy that
spk_0
JFK had won the election so we were like walking around the golf course like you know
spk_0
got a chance we got a chance here I won't have to be in this cotton field all of my life you know
spk_0
and when that happened they showed us you know what kind of chance you got so it was just the cruelty of
spk_0
of the south and of the world at that time so we had to go with the flow you know
spk_0
you were also around during the immatil stuff and then and well as I hold where you at that time
spk_0
at immatil it was in 1955 so I was six and seven do you remember it vividly in the
spk_0
year when all down in Mississippi it was like and he was maybe
spk_0
60 miles from where I was from um all through Mississippi it was like my god it was a chill
spk_0
throughout this throughout the south they would do this to a child he had to do that to a child but
spk_0
I mean I'm I live in civil cities so I've seen all of that and experienced all of that when people
spk_0
were come down south from the north and they didn't know the rules there and these farmers and
spk_0
other people there would say teach you a lesson and that's what they would do and that's
spk_0
how I got out of Mississippi was I was working at the country club and I was playing ball playing
spk_0
really good basketball at that time at 14 and they said I was like yelling at the people
spk_0
at the country club so they put me in jail for one night and my mother said I got to get you out of here
spk_0
so and I could not leave from civil city because you know that's the farm country so you had to go
spk_0
to another city so we went to Belzona called a bus got up to Chicago and at that time I thought
spk_0
my brothers was rich because they used to come down south you know from where with a roll of
spk_0
fools roll you know but I was a fool so I thought they were rich you know so I said oh man I'm
spk_0
hanging out with my brothers man this is some money boys here so money boys yeah and so the money
spk_0
boy said well man you know that car we was driving was rented out of a crust I said well
spk_0
am I gonna have this bad room on this on this first floor of this townhouse that's not ours we
spk_0
only got the four floor you sleep it on the floor so I was sleeping on the floor and they would
spk_0
like just walk around with those green jelly looking suits you know and those white looking those
spk_0
staces shoes just stitches even sitting around on Friday polishing up the stitches on those staces
spk_0
I was like boy if I could get out of here because they were I was going to go to Crane Tech in Chicago
spk_0
and they were telling me boy we're gonna make some money out for you this you know I was like
spk_0
please let me get out and so finally my brother came over from the for he was going to the
spk_0
bowling green state university he played ball with me and worked with worked with me out on
spk_0
playgrounds that you got to get out of here you're a great player you just got to get away from
spk_0
these boys your brothers so the first thing I did was before we left my brother Andrew had been
spk_0
bullying me for all my life so I said I got to get this brother I got to get this one so I stole him
spk_0
and then we would we do get out you'll be on him yeah beefed on him man he beat
spk_0
so on top of that he had on his jelly looking suit would have a pint in this pack pocket
spk_0
so I took a rock and hit that paint yeah and that whiskey
spk_0
on his leg and I said goodbye she's so good to detrol he busted his nose and f**k his drink up
spk_0
out peace on him he more word he more sucked it by the drink yeah no no that was the case oh yeah
spk_0
let me drink that I'm not messing with that man this was brown whiskey oh not like
spk_0
come on how did the first draw crown was still in the purple bag
spk_0
he tells me for the purple bag I think it was gold it was gold the first bag was gold okay then
spk_0
went the purple I don't even think they had gold bags no no no no the first crown but he got it off
spk_0
the shelf he's probably had some uh make believe crown yeah yeah it was like everything that they had
spk_0
was like bap to brew fake out yeah and then my brother came in and we he took me down to
spk_0
bowling green state university and I was just playing with all of the greats down there
spk_0
how it cold minds Nate Thurman all of those guys and they said man you need to go to detroit
spk_0
and you get a good coach to adopt you and you'll be alright so I went to detroit to play in this
spk_0
big tournament that called krunk oh not box oh dey uh 15 just 15 yeah yeah so I had no place to
spk_0
stay nothing so they put me in this tournament I played against George trap all of the high school
spk_0
phenoms in detroit man I have been running through cotton fields all my life I played I was looking
spk_0
to these guys like they were tired I was like oh good so I ran through to those guys and then they
spk_0
said well oh he's not that good let him play against kazzy russell and all of the college boys
spk_0
kazzy russell will be your buttons and all of those guys so I played against them to help my
spk_0
own I had like 17 and 10 and then said okay one last shot put him on the court with the pros and
spk_0
Dave being said I got him on my team so I went out and played against this three games in that
spk_0
at 15 years old yeah I mean I was out of the cotton field yeah this is how did the game go with the
spk_0
pros the pros I killed the pros really yeah and I was running and that was like can I can
spk_0
can I please get a fagal soda pop maybe like you can have what you want yeah water belly one
spk_0
everything I was I was that enjoy it so we'll Robinson walked up on me and said I want you to come
spk_0
to Persian high school in order for that to happen we're going to have to adopt you because
spk_0
there's a white coach black coach black coach first black coach coach in seed to a division one
spk_0
well Robinson and so he adopted me and and I remember the first day of practice I walk into the
spk_0
gym and I'm shooting long shots because I'm down south you know we shoot long ball so he said
spk_0
hold it practice he said boys we've been playing like muse we got us a goddamn horse man
spk_0
and we're gonna ride this some bitch all the way to the state championship so the Detroit schools
spk_0
hadn't been to the state championship in 35 years because once we got out of the city the fix was in
spk_0
like words what you guys over at when y'all played the the mallets and the palace so the fix was in
spk_0
so they we didn't we didn't get up but we got there and we won it all and and that was a beautiful
spk_0
night man win it all the first time and everything and then all of a sudden I decided well I want
spk_0
my mom was to see me play so I signed with the University of Tennessee out of high school not knowing
spk_0
that I was the first black in the southeast eastern conference I just want my mom to see me play
spk_0
because she didn't see me play in high school so I get that and get off rough set I just lost to
spk_0
Belvedere Joe Joe Billy Bobby Joe and all those guys some Texas Western the first black team to win
spk_0
I'm supposed to get the first black so that's when the argument took place and but the University of
spk_0
Tennessee and then Will says I got a place for you perfect I want you to go to school called
spk_0
Trinidad State Junior College in Colorado on the border of Colorado in New Mexico but you're
spk_0
gonna love it it's very close to Denver very close to Abercourt Kid 450 miles from Abercourt
spk_0
360 miles from Denver I didn't know I was trying to get you know get there so that's how I ended up
spk_0
on the Olympic team because I was the MVP of the junior college that I was the best player there
spk_0
well they still training in Colorado at the time the Olympic team no no okay we were like
spk_0
we were planning we had to trials in Abercourt Kid so Jerry Tarcanian he is like the big dude
spk_0
you know you know you know you're an athlete yeah but he wasn't at UNRP at the time he was at
spk_0
some junior college he put up he put up our team together and we came down to Abercourt Kid to play
spk_0
against Pete Mariburge all the graceful there in the gym man I was junior college team ran over
spk_0
everybody oh really I mean these people like where these people coming from who are these people
spk_0
and so Hank Iber came over to John McLendon who was assistant coach for the Olympic team in 1968
spk_0
and 68 we had had some big problems because that was the year when the revolution was going on
spk_0
in America Karim decided to boycott Alvin Hayes and Wes Oncel signed a pro contract because you
spk_0
had to be a amateur my Bob Leneer and other players decided they didn't want to come to the trials
spk_0
so they were like stranded and I was like I'm the guy that's going to do this and they were like
spk_0
what are you talking about you're too young and I was like yeah I guess I'm going to get this
spk_0
gear and go back to Detroit and see what my boys hey man I tried I put an Olympic team and so
spk_0
we played and kept playing and stuff and they started at the end of it they said let's get
spk_0
our team together who we going to pick on the Olympic team that told me that I was too young I'm
spk_0
a freshman so I was just there let me get my gear and Hank Iber and John McLendon said well I first
spk_0
play a pick Spencer Hayward I don't have a passport and so they they then they start cutting
spk_0
Pete Maravage Wow Calvin Murphy they were cutting players like I was like whoa what kind of player
spk_0
team we're going to have and plus I don't in the back of my mind everyone was supposed to bring
spk_0
me passports and I didn't have one so I was in my mind like they gonna cut me again because I don't
spk_0
have a passport so they said well we got to solve that problem son let's call your mother my mother
spk_0
don't have no phone we're in backwards of Mississippi so you ended up getting her to come to the
spk_0
grocery store and see picked up the phone so yeah I got this passport right here I got this
spk_0
burst of typically you can get a passport it's right here on the John 21 in my Bible
spk_0
they said they said well you have to send that Bible up here so we can take a picture and remove
spk_0
it down say baby baby baby this Bible remember Ben with me since I was four years old it's not leaving
spk_0
so we had to fly Mississippi take a picture and they created the burst I mean the burst of
spk_0
typically now I got my passport and I was off to Russia I said man my big trip baby was the
spk_0
soda back then huh you said fego fego it was the big pops soda pop center yeah so fego was
spk_0
was soda back then yeah back in Detroit that was just where it was beat I'm just saying I just got
spk_0
hip to fego about like ten years ago no I just said at Will's house looking at it like wow
spk_0
I just want to get me uh I just want to get a root beer and I want to get up fego got some good
spk_0
players so many good flavors you know yeah you know I'm talking about so I was you know that was
spk_0
my journey and then I until I moved over with a family named James and I had a bell but I was
spk_0
down there with all the lawyers and the doctors and Detroit and stuff but back to this this trip to
spk_0
Russia so we get to Russia and we're scrimmaging against the Russians and they were like
spk_0
you're black people being cheated in America you come live with us and we said well
spk_0
Charlie Scott and Jo Jo White and we were like all real white so we were like
spk_0
can we order pizza what's a pizza we said this ain't good you can't order pizza here
spk_0
I started trying to get pregnant about four years ago now we're getting a little bit older and
spk_0
just kind of felt like the window could be closing Bloomberg and I heart podcasts present
spk_0
IVF disrupted the kind body story a podcast about a company that promised to revolutionize fertility
spk_0
care introducing kind body a new generation of women's health and fertility care
spk_0
backed by millions adventure capital and private equity it grew like a tech startup
spk_0
while kind body did help women start families it also left behind a stream of disillusioned

spk_0
December 29th 1975 LaGuardia Airport
spk_0
the holiday rush parents hauling luggage kids gripping their new Christmas toys
spk_0
then at 6.33 p.m everything changed
spk_0
there's been a bombing at the TWA terminal apparently the explosion actually impelled metal
spk_0
the injured were being loaded into ambulances just a chaotic chaotic scene in its wake a new kind
spk_0
of enemy emerged and it was here to stay terrorism law and order criminal justice system is back
spk_0
in season two returning our focus to a threat that hides in plain sight that's harder to predict
spk_0
and even harder to stop listen to the new season of law and order criminal justice system
spk_0
on the iHeart Radio app Apple podcast or wherever you get your podcasts
spk_0
what was that experience like though I mean the Olympics you're you're 18 19 yeah
spk_0
19 what was that like oh gosh that was when we got back before we got back to America
spk_0
we stopped and put in scrimmage against the nicks and willis weed and all of the wall phrase and all
spk_0
of them the sand man you guys got a good squad y'all might get a gold medal or a medal in the
spk_0
Olympics you know and then we went from there to play against Oscar and the Cincinnati Royals
spk_0
and Oscar pulled me inside and said you're gonna win this song a bit and that just blew my
spk_0
my mind was like woo so then we get to Mexico City they had the students had
spk_0
rioted in Mexico City so there's blood and everything on the street so there's wiping up the
spk_0
blood and stuff but we were like man and at the same time the Olympic committee had met with
spk_0
John Carlos and Tommy Smith and they had met with Jackie Robinson and earlier that summer they met
spk_0
with Martin Luther King and then just before then he was he was murdered Kennedy was murdered
spk_0
not J.F. but the robber they have Kennedy was murdered and here we were in Mexico City
spk_0
and this big old dude kept looking at me and I'm looking at him I'm like why are you looking at
spk_0
me brother he said man I got a eating partner I was like what are you talking about how old
spk_0
somebody to go with me to the commissary we're gonna eat this motherfucker out of our house and
spk_0
George for them oh big George so so we got to work in and play in and stuff and
spk_0
and Tommy Smith and John Carlos was like the leader of the whole Olympic the Olympic village because
spk_0
yeah wasn't like when you guys play y'all have like condos and shit we were standing in the dorms
spk_0
and so we all just hung out and we were learning I was learning so much from those guys about
spk_0
the revolution about everything because hey I'm like two years or three years out of Mississippi
spk_0
out of the cotton field backwards and so one night we were like questioning whether we go into
spk_0
boycott or show some some kind of movement with the Olympic with the Olympic team the black players
spk_0
and we had a lot of white players as well wanted to show that we was in solidarity with what was
spk_0
going on in America because we had the riots and Detroit we had the riots in in California
spk_0
we had them in Newark New Jersey it was just chaos and everybody was like them tombs who went
spk_0
the Marco Tombs down their plan and their sixty-eight Olympic why don't you do like Kareem it was like
spk_0
that whole atmosphere so Carlos wasn't gone yeah well John was there he was real when I'm saying he
spk_0
wasn't budging what was that situation like I mean when they when they when they raised their
spk_0
fist on the podium they raised their fist on the podium they put the black love on and they put
spk_0
with Abry Brundage Abry Brundage was a friend and a close associate with Hitler
spk_0
so that we knew that was going to be some trouble here so Charlie Scott and Jojo man we got to be
spk_0
cool don't do nothing don't say nothing so I'm not gonna say anything I don't like John and
spk_0
Tommy anyway right now yeah I was just joking but you know so for they did that they took
spk_0
their passports walked them through us had all of us on the Olympic team and let us look
spk_0
walking through their man that hurt me so bad because they did they had they kept us all organized
spk_0
at the Olympic they kept us strong they kept us in faith they were the leaders they were the leaders
spk_0
and then to walk them through us and then get out of here get out of here they kicked them out yeah
spk_0
kicked them out of the Olympics wow and they had to go back home where people were like throwing
spk_0
things yeah you not understanding the magnitude at the time we know they didn't care and so
spk_0
man and then all of a sudden we had to play the final game and with all that stuff going on
spk_0
I'm just choking because yeah I'm the star and they said oh we close to winning the Howard
spk_0
Cossia what do you think fella you're gonna be able to go back to Detroit
spk_0
black folks are gonna kill you so you can see me playing I make a layup and run straight into
spk_0
the locker room through up all over the place come right back out run back on the floor and we won
spk_0
the gold and they announced that I was the MVP and I was standing there you know like three
spk_0
years ago I'm in the cotton field but not even having life itself and now I'm an American hero with
spk_0
the gold medal on wow I just broke down and started crying my legs got weak and I was falling down
spk_0
and Jojo standing like a man walking up he pulled me up and standing like a man build a
spk_0
husk at them guys stand up now this is your time so I was like wow so that was beautiful and then
spk_0
the big deal Howard Cossia was like what are you gonna do when you go back to Detroit they hate you
spk_0
for what you've done I was like how could they hate me so we're thinking Will Robinson I was there
spk_0
we're flying in to Detroit we're thinking man these brothers are gonna kill us man so we can
spk_0
flew into Detroit we landed it was like 4,000 black and white were there celebrating that's
spk_0
me that's beautiful that's beautiful America is America is something else man Cossia was a
spk_0
Pete oh god Pete was magic Johnson nadar to ball he was that combination
spk_0
he was he was something special how tall was he 6364 but his handle was like a mac and
spk_0
like did you play what he had he had some Pete in him too white J will J will yeah white white
spk_0
chocolate yeah chocolate had some Pete and I always told him when we was in Mexico City they
spk_0
were celebrating my 50 return and I was like you got yeah yeah yeah he's all the same yeah
spk_0
Pete and I played together when I was with the new Orleans jazz with Elton Baylor the coach
spk_0
oh wow yeah and then they moved us to to Utah and I was like oh culture shock hey
spk_0
did but I didn't go I didn't go I didn't go because I was married to Iman at the time and she
spk_0
was like I can't go I've been to New Orleans I can't go to Utah I need to work I need to do
spk_0
things well hold on you're just casually saying you're married to one of the biggest super models
spk_0
of all time let's talk about that suspense yes because John was telling us some shit for you came in
spk_0
here like how did you bag Iman man she saw me she said oh I want him so bad no she didn't
spk_0
I was about to believe it oh yeah no no no no that's how they told me do me
spk_0
so you still feel bro so we were in New York and I was with the next she had just came over from
spk_0
East Africa from Somalia how do you feel my me ask you I'm eight what am I 90 no for your check
spk_0
I'm 76 okay I'm not knowing you ain't no guckin it 90 so we were having dinner and moves like
spk_0
the sports meets the fashion industry okay and so at that time I was reading the caran and I was
spk_0
and she was from a Muslim country and so we started talking about the profit and different things
spk_0
and just talking and then everybody at the table said oh boy them two together and so that's
spk_0
how we hooked up just started hanging and and the next thing you know we we spent all about time
spk_0
because I had just got into the nicks from Seattle from the Sonics so I didn't know anybody but
spk_0
Earl and Clyde and Phil Jackson you know those guys but Phil didn't want to hang because he was
spk_0
smoking a lot we yeah you basically took your shot huh did you take your shot as you become yes
spk_0
yes yes yes Islamolay Balay Faisalah we got to greet each other it's the only right that we
spk_0
greet each other right yes so then we we hung out and we just started hanging with each other just
spk_0
spending time and my other good friend in that group was BJ Beverly Johnson yeah so I'm girls
spk_0
for like stories you know no no so what happened was I didn't know because I had to switch over to
spk_0
the fashion industry because I didn't New York was like scattered players didn't get together like
spk_0
that so I just hung out with the fashion yeah yeah that's smart too the baddest women in the
spk_0
world if you know I'm saying I don't need no need nobody yeah we listen to jazz doing everything
spk_0
enjoying our life what is that kind of obviously media isn't what it is today but I mean you're
spk_0
hanging with two of the biggest super models in the world you're one of the biggest basketball players
spk_0
in the world what's the attention like around you as it cameras is it talk what is it like yeah it
spk_0
was pretty aggressive because of the fact that yeah I was Mr Nick that's a huge crossover and then
spk_0
she was the world famous model just came here from Somalia so it was really something and we got
spk_0
on Good Morning America and we was talking about our marriage and we were just you mine had just we
spk_0
had just I had just got a notice from the NBA because I did a photo with you mine I was just
spk_0
holding my hand over her press and a stomach was out with my baby and so the league was like
spk_0
and I waited a minute we're not that progressive they wouldn't ready don't let us don't let us
spk_0
catch you doing that kind of stuff and I got my cue it wasn't nothing exotic it was exotic yeah
spk_0
they didn't run shot by Michael Ryan Hart a very famous photographer so and we got on Good Morning
spk_0
America so we were just talking like man we're gonna bring we're gonna bring culture to the blacks
spk_0
in America and and we're gonna take technology to the Africans in Africa somebody and maybe
spk_0
the CIA or someone was like whoa wait a minute here too much slow your head down here bro you may
spk_0
be crazy but you ain't no fool man so we saw the slow down and then when you want just don't help us
spk_0
get the nigga smart watch out I'm just telling you what you do it you watch out now so then when I
spk_0
when I got traded before I I got traded when I was wouldn't report to Utah so we got to LA and I
spk_0
was like oh my god I'm with my boy because he was with me when I took my shahada Korean hard hazard
spk_0
all these people were here you know UCLA so they all over here yeah so I slipped into
spk_0
another group and he might was just constantly begging me please don't go with these people
spk_0
and I was like man I'm with Priya what the fuck he's making me laugh yeah yeah but he was
spk_0
having a coke yeah he came with some other stuff you came with some other stuff so I slipped man I
spk_0
slept badly and while playing with the Lakers I tell you how stupid it was I would come to practice
spk_0
and we're watching the films and magic would look at me and say word man you gotta get your hands
spk_0
together you're losing your hands man they knew what was going on I was like I was in denial of
spk_0
what about the co-cuse and about free basin so I had answers for everything I had some fucking answers
spk_0
how do you at this point I was 28 29 right in your prime yeah prime I came to average in 24
spk_0
points and 12 rebound but one who was saying to me cut out drugs big not just what you don't but
spk_0
Joe's big and elite here oh it's a said everybody was on white because it's like a fraternity you
spk_0
know yeah it's just white through us man I came in there with like I said 24 and 12 by mid season I
spk_0
was down to 17 and seven by the end of the season I was at seven and five 20 pounds lighter basically
spk_0
and so we would have film session and magic is like what we need to baby we need you and I was like
spk_0
I got your brother I got you and he said like look at this film here you see I dropped that pass
spk_0
on you like this you it's missing your hand you like you drop it I was like hold it it's not me
spk_0
it's you magic you see that look run it back run it back pat pat ride it was just
spk_0
to go run it back see the whole less being he's got on that ball wow yeah I'm in denial I mean I'm
spk_0
keeping denial every two you know so I'm like okay so Koreans step up okay now would not
spk_0
that's enough of this shit I said okay what's going on big fella brother man
spk_0
you know what we doing what we doing cap so caps is you have fallen off so far in the rebound so
spk_0
we can't make it without you getting the rebound that's it cap let's look at the tape again
spk_0
so cap look at the tape and I said after seat your sky hook is coming off
spk_0
I'm the room to my way the wrong way I'm going to decide
spk_0
well I know I'm the girl but yours is real mental I decide so they were like just sitting there like
spk_0
oh god this wood is so hopeless this is not this is not like I was indeed I was indeed man and so one
spk_0
day I was on my way to practice I had had a real crazy night we were in the playoffs for the finals
spk_0
I had just I got to have one more shot I got to have one more hit so I stayed up and just you know
spk_0
kept going you know I was piping man yeah she had free base hey man I was what I was
spk_0
snored for when I got free base get right to the money straight to it so so I'm driving along
spk_0
I get up on it I get up to the thing and I'm like I mean I'm all of a sudden I fall asleep and I'm
spk_0
here and cars banging people banging on my door I'm like hey what the fuck are y'all doing
spk_0
hitting my rolls Royce like this so I go to practice yeah so then I run to practice and I decided
spk_0
well I think I can run it out of me before this practice start I ran I ran around the
spk_0
track just running in all of us so I then I get to the practice and I'm so freaking tired and so
spk_0
fucked up that I fall asleep oh sure here's Jamal get up get up get up get up I'm like where am I oh
spk_0
yeah we're in the finals but you went fairy tale land I'm sure you have really good so that's when
spk_0
the team decided well it's best that you stay home for a while and I'm like but we only got
spk_0
two more games three more games and that was my my journey with that and so from that
spk_0
from that Emah was like well I know what you can do because you know they'll say told me you know
spk_0
you need to get out out of wet places and wet faces and I said well I'll go back to New York with
spk_0
the nicks and I'll go back to Utah I can be cleaning Utah and everybody had put the word out and David
spk_0
Stern has said man I need you to take the fall for this league really so I went to I went to Italy
spk_0
and then I came back to Washington and had a grand season was killing them and then Emah was a
spk_0
notable bill accident I had been away from my family and stuff so long that I just said I got
spk_0
a call of quiz because I had her sister her brother and Nadia was with us all the time so you
spk_0
know you bring an African family with you got a family family so I left the game and then Emah
spk_0
over there just bugging me still about going to see a psychiatrist or some other
spk_0
ologist I was like that's shit is for models so I went in I went in and start going to see one and
spk_0
then I I loved it I mean I was able to he was talking to me about PTSD about what I went through
spk_0
with the trial and all of that stuff so I was like oh shit this is pretty cool yeah so from that
spk_0
now been in 42 years congratulations and how long did it take you to kick the habit all in from
spk_0
when you started to when you you look good I could be three years three years yeah and kind of lost
spk_0
side of everything oh I mean I just I mean once I got back and once she healed up I
spk_0
my sponsor was saying you know you can't live in wet places and wet faces so I had to step away
spk_0
because the week was still dirty at that time right you know I wanted you to fall the league was
spk_0
still dirty the dirty so I said well let me just move to Detroit and Emah was cool enough to say
spk_0
we had a daughter you take the daughter while I finished my modeling and then we'll work
spk_0
join custody custody back and forth we need to go to no lawyers and nothing we just
spk_0
knew we had to do the thing so so you retired early 30 32 33 32 and at my peak I'm ready
spk_0
but it was more important for you that that family yeah because I mean he's a Molly and they
spk_0
and even they don't even know the language so I had to take care of that as you guys relationship
spk_0
today today perfect amazing it's not perfect but it's all cool because we talk a lot that's
spk_0
perfect now we talk a lot and some of our daughters my oldest daughter yeah two daughters with her
spk_0
I have one daughter okay Zoolek and I have a granddaughter okay and my other daughters I have four
spk_0
daughters all girls all girl I got six okay so you know what I'm talking yeah so there like always
spk_0
like why y'all talking why y'all talking when we was at the next games this year for the play
spk_0
I'll walk crazy in the Earl and all I'm like what y'all what you're gonna do would I'm like man I
spk_0
can't bring her to this game y'all are blowing up so it's we're fun we haven't found
spk_0
with you because she lost her husband David Boy I lost my wife three years ago
spk_0
Linda already here then and so my daughter that used to go with me to see my psychiatrist
spk_0
Caesar psychologist really she cured wow yeah that's her brand she's doing real well my other
spk_0
daughter I says y'all probably know I says she's over the deed is doing real well up in Portland
spk_0
my next daughter is a professor at Lincoln University okay and Zoolek and my oldest daughter
spk_0
she works with her mother Imani and all of that so life is pretty good with me I've been I've
spk_0
been clean and sober you know for the 42 years and of course I you know I wouldn't I wouldn't be
spk_0
fitted to say that that clean and sober but I do of course I'm just saying no we knew that already
spk_0
like okay then I'm just saying what was like breathing yeah especially canvas these days everybody
spk_0
my mom was it was it punished me all kinds of shit in high school now she calling me where's that
spk_0
did you leave me so I give I give but what maddened I was talking about for the retired players we have
spk_0
like over 3000 players and we was like just talking about you know things creams for your knees
spk_0
and all of these but they weren't ready but everybody was like so oh man knows up you and you
spk_0
maddened jack and you guys I'm like head of the curve you just ahead of the curve yeah I know how
spk_0
accurate was winning time winning time was very accurate with me uh-huh wood hairs he's one of my
spk_0
favorite actors by the way that's my god yeah and you yeah cook me up real night
spk_0
because I was nervous that I mean what is he gonna do is they're gonna have me you know this way
spk_0
off the rocker so yeah when I talked to wood after you had spoke with him and then I said go for it
spk_0
brother don't don't play around there's not talk with Rodney Burns okay who's the writer and I was
spk_0
like you know let it go we need to tell young players we need to show them that the life is wasn't
spk_0
there's not that play over thing you know it's it's a lot it's a lot involved here and so how
spk_0
you can fall how you can pick yourself up how you can move on and so that's what they did with
spk_0
me and now I have a deal with Lionsgate to do the whole Spencer congratulations yeah and so now I'm
spk_0
just circling back because I'm thinking we got Mario band people I'm going the director okay and
spk_0
we got coming really that's you know it's my godson I didn't know I just said him yesterday I should
spk_0
go I said yes my godson he's at the risk with me tonight yesterday that's my godson yeah can I
spk_0
tell you all the story about how he almost became Macklemore you know the rapper from Seattle yeah
spk_0
and so his father played with me in Denver comments father comments from Ronnie Lone singing
spk_0
he played with me in the in the ABA and his mother was and so she's she's still and but
spk_0
she was like taking care and I was this young player that was in the league and everybody was taking
spk_0
the shot at me you know so Lone was my god at like they taught you I'm going to go I'm going
spk_0
in Chicago in the sophomore high school yeah it's like you know six for eight children yeah so
spk_0
they took care of me and made sure that everything was right and then when girls were coming around
spk_0
and we're like get away get away he's got a career that's comments mother so we were all
spk_0
tired this family so when he was born that makes me to be as a godfather and so I get to I get to
spk_0
Seattle after I won my case and I'm like you know having all proceeds and I was finished third behind
spk_0
Karim and what's behind Karim and Nate Archibald for MVP and so I said man I would be nice if I could
spk_0
get my boy here in Seattle so I spoke to Russ Bill Russell he was like coach I said Russ can we
spk_0
give him a try out and he said yeah get him out here so I didn't know what shape Lone was in I
spk_0
didn't know he was using so I just said hey man come on out and we're going to give you a shot a
spk_0
real good shot and you know I'm gonna I'm gonna protect you to a degree so Lone grabbed up his
spk_0
family illegally who would come in that he was two years old so they coming to Seattle and so he
spk_0
had basically kidnapped him so they was coming to Seattle so they had to get Lone and arrest him for
spk_0
a minute and they went back to Chicago and so common is always talking this shit nowadays you know
spk_0
if that had if that shit had to worked out in Seattle I would have been the black man
spk_0
black limo and the other guy was named I like them butts oh so mix a lot mix a lot so common
spk_0
would have been so mix a lot of black maclamor can't tell us your story about the time you
spk_0
declined equity with Nike oh boy oh boy break that down we talked about you can he turn down a
spk_0
similar deal I know but his was his yeah yeah a little bit time yeah I was in 1972 and 73 Nike came
spk_0
out with this you and I said yeah I would wear it because feel night we were all up in Portland
spk_0
in Seattle so that was a whole other area for you know just business and everything else so you
spk_0
would just like it's like hippies so so he came and said would you wear my shoe I said yeah of course
spk_0
that way North West boys we down and so and he said okay I'm gonna give you some stock in this
spk_0
company first of all I was young too and I'm thinking livestock yeah what are you talking about
spk_0
stock so I get to stock and my boy did I let dude in negotiation he was like struggling you know
spk_0
have them bills taking care so he was like convincing me man that shoe is never going to work
spk_0
because look at what happened because when I was walking running down the floor guys would come
spk_0
behind me and pop my shoe I think a step on your heel and step on my heel and Nike didn't have the
spk_0
like it was new yeah yeah yeah from front pre-fantane yeah it was that's kind of
spk_0
free-fantane so so it popping off so I'm like well maybe so I said okay man I'll
spk_0
I give you the power of turning let me just go play I got I gotta I gotta go back at the
spk_0
really focus on this game now because this is my chance and when I came back here so like shit
spk_0
he said man I got cash right here 100 there I'm much 100 thousand so any idea what that could
spk_0
have been today 10 percent it was up around 2.7 years ago still friends with him yes
spk_0
because we always make it we were young man the league was young gym shoes we only had two shoes
spk_0
we had like the two shoes were converse I didn't like them converse because it was just so flat
spk_0
on the bottom and will Chamberlain warm and he blocked me three times in one game so I was like
spk_0
fuck them never way and I fucking shoot and and then we had what else the other one was pro kids
spk_0
so hard bottom shoe and then you had wild Fraser shoe but nobody wanted to compete with
spk_0
all so interesting so that was my where you're gonna go shame we feel night directly yeah
spk_0
that's crazy well he at that time he didn't have the shop you know yeah just had to handle a
spk_0
mile of it's like that way so I did do the big commercial for them it's the original poster for
spk_0
Nike because they had no other players and it's me standing you can only get this shoe at
spk_0
this location so I have that poster so I still so I do talk to feel feel was came to me when I was
spk_0
inducted into the Hall of Fame oh my gosh can't stop yeah I started trying to get pregnant about
spk_0
four years ago now we're getting a little bit older and it just kind of felt like the window could
spk_0
be closing Bloomberg and I hard podcast present IVF disrupted the kind body story a podcast about a
spk_0
company that promised to revolutionize fertility care introducing kind body a new generation of
spk_0

spk_0
it grew like a tech startup while kind body did help women start families it also left behind a

December 29, 1975 LaGuardia Airport
spk_0
the holiday rush parents hauling luggage kids gripping their new Christmas toys
spk_0
then at 6.33 p.m everything changed there's been a bombing at the TWA terminal apparently the
spk_0
explosion actually impelled metal glad the injured were being loaded into ambulances just a chaotic
spk_0
chaotic scene in its wake a new kind of enemy emerged and it was here to stay terrorism
spk_0
law and order criminal justice system is back in season 2 returning our focus to a threat that hides

spk_0
here with dr. J from the black effect podcast network on the iHeartRadio app Apple podcast
spk_0
or wherever you get your podcasts any relationship or mj stores my good joy stories yeah Mike
spk_0
i'm in New York and i'm trying to figure out man i'm negotiating because we were like part of
spk_0
the players union too and they were doing this uh negotiation so i get this call from Mike i'm
spk_0
what the fuck are you calling me for you corporate and i'm the i'm the grunt
spk_0
so Mike it's a come on down let's have some dinner man so we you know we had a nice dinner we talked a
spk_0
lot of shit and he kept telling me he kept telling all the other owners and everything that was there
spk_0
this was the first Nike guy i wouldn't have had my contract if he had it through his away
spk_0
and i was like Mike you can't do it like that but Mike was so cool
spk_0
so he was just showing some love how does i mean i again i don't think and i could be right i don't
spk_0
think you got the love and respect you deserve for everything you did from on and off the
spk_0
Corbin when you get it back from your peers or some legends in the game does that kind of help
spk_0
a little bit it helps a lot this today you know i've waited for this yeah because y'all in my
spk_0
book yeah so i mean i'm just saying uh but you know when you take a stand like that Muhammad Ali
spk_0
uh Kurt flood jack and robson and myself there's a thing called mountain rush more of the people
spk_0
who changed the game and i'll get that shot to you as well and so so you know when you do that
spk_0
and i went against the universities now they're gonna call me before the congress again coming up
spk_0
coming up because of the fact that they want to change the nil now that black folks are getting to
spk_0
the pay that's trump there you go you said the word say it again dumb so he wants to change his so that
spk_0
i'm like you can't do that man you gotta be better than this you the president anytime they see
spk_0
us getting hit or anything these guys gonna shot a throw a monkey wrench in it yeah but we're
spk_0
stronger than that so we'll get through it so i'm going to testify and i'm with the uh
spk_0
Congressional black congress and now i'll talk about the importance of it and the importance of
spk_0
this ruling the importance of my ruling because my ruling alone has helped to create
spk_0
that these are not scientific numbers but their mountains over sixty five billion dollars for
spk_0
player salary from nineteen sixty from nineteen seventy one and nineteen seventy one when i won
spk_0
my case Hayward versus the NBA we only had fourteen teams because we didn't have a pool in which
spk_0
the pool from young guys coming up and they had told the old heads in the league that
spk_0
if if you let him get in here these young guys like matt jack they're gonna come in and put you
spk_0
guys out of business so they didn't support me so i just look at it all man is i was a vegan basically
spk_0
for thirty one years until my wife passed now i'm eating fish again i've been working out i pray a lot
spk_0
i enjoy life i have my my four daughters i got since i don't have any sons i got three grandsons
spk_0
they go in it shit i tell them you know what i'm saying they like oh yeah okay so i'm enjoying life
spk_0
you got to be enjoying your hands yeah in good hands and then i go to the games i watch the games a
spk_0
lot i watch the young players play and i'm like wow do you know the focus can play
spk_0
they can play quick question we got a real a real quick hitters app a real quick we spoke to
spk_0
George gervin last or the evening this week and he said although magic and bird accredited with
spk_0
saving the NBA he kind of felt like the influx with the aBA coming into the NBA is really what's
spk_0
that changed the game because i told you before you know they was in blue and gray suits and brown suits
spk_0
and they was going down i'll tell you what happened my first game in Seattle or third game in Seattle
spk_0
i ripped the ball off and palmed it and flicked it over to Lenny Wilkins Lenny Wilkins it go
spk_0
and i i got the ball at the half court and i just was dribbling i said oh shit i'm behind the
spk_0
free throw line maybe i'll take a dump i took off and like just to show him what it was all about
spk_0
and dumped bam and it was like he's a hot dog you jump from the free throw line in a game yes
spk_0
yes and he said he's a hot dog so that was the new look of the and i was the first one to come to
spk_0
the NBA from the aBA so that was the whole look so later on that season everybody was looking for
spk_0
something exciting to happen you know so and that's when Sam Schultman the owner of the son
spk_0
said i'm gonna get me some more them so he winning that John brisker down let me give you some more
spk_0
in yeah the brown boys black boys over there so he winning that John brisker you get a couple of them
spk_0
Jim McDaniels all of us were gonna say you think really yeah interesting yeah crazy all right quick
spk_0
hitters first thing to come to mind let us know your top five players of all time my top five
spk_0
players of all time i don't know in this order but i'm just gonna say this five okay kareen
spk_0

spk_0

spk_0
who called me and said come to visit with me and sit with me i love it pick your brain and he
spk_0
and and and he said you know i think i want to do this movie on you and the next year he was
spk_0
he had the ultimate respect for everybody that came to him oh yeah yeah student you see him
spk_0
sitting with bill russell yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah and he respect me for what i did for him
spk_0
in the sense that he said i wouldn't have been able to come out of high school
spk_0
yes without you without you absolutely i'm gonna show you big respect most intimidating player
spk_0
that you played against the dipper big dipper incredible i'm gonna tell you one of the story about
spk_0
when he was winning the 62 72 games in a row i was out there having a ball i was doing like i had 40
spk_0
and it was like 15 before the fourth quarter was ended you know in the fourth quarter he sick
spk_0

spk_0
two hundred seventy five pounds all like i see is like a cartoon big old figure song at you
spk_0
he knocked me out oh shit oh no we ain't messing up this 72 we ain't messing up this
spk_0

spk_0
took me out yeah out of his last year your boy from UCLA what has it i'll save you he jumps over
spk_0
over bill bridges back and slid into the the floor had these 24 second clocks on the floor
