spk_0 You're listening to the Sky Sports Premier League podcast.
spk_0 Welcome along.
spk_0 A busy Sunday of Premier League action was rounded off by Brentford against Manchester City.
spk_0 Here's how things sounded at full time.
spk_0 MUSIC
spk_0 AND THAT'S YOUR LONG!
spk_0
spk_0 AND THAT'S YOUR LONG!
spk_0 AND THAT'S YOUR LONG!
spk_0 AND THAT'S YOUR LONG!
spk_0
spk_0 And perhaps his 250th Premier League win.
spk_0 And not for the first time it is a win secured for him by Irling Harland and the greatest
spk_0 of all battering rounds who clattered through inside the first quarter of an hour to apply
spk_0 the most important touch of a football match which after half time certainly became a
spk_0 whole lot more competitive.
spk_0 Manchester City clearly are not going away.
spk_0 and another display from the
spk_0 name of coherence and competence
spk_0 and when required class.
spk_0 And Gary they are back up to
spk_0 within touch.
spk_0 Yeah, they fully deserved it
spk_0 today. Obviously the first half
spk_0 they were dominant, but that's
spk_0 not vintage city.
spk_0 They're having to win games like
spk_0 the rest of us have had to win
spk_0 games over the years about to
spk_0 dig in in that second half.
spk_0 Brent for a lot better key
spk_0 tanger's will be disappointed
spk_0 with that first 45 minutes.
spk_0 Put this team were better in
spk_0 the second, but he will be
spk_0 happy that he's in touch with
spk_0 the top of the league where he's
spk_0 been for so long.
spk_0 He's managerial career.
spk_0 Three points of last little two
spk_0 points off of the pool and he'll
spk_0 think within.
spk_0 Grasp of another title race.
spk_0 Yeah Brent for boot that home
spk_0 for the first time this season.
spk_0 City though right back in the
spk_0 thick of it three points off the
spk_0 Premier League lead as we hit the
spk_0 October break markets Brent for
spk_0 Neil Manchester City one.
spk_0 Thank you Peter.
spk_0 Thank you Gary.
spk_0 Strangel game that to me right
spk_0 that was it was.
spk_0 Yes City was so comfortable
spk_0 first.
spk_0 I we felt like it could be any
spk_0 score but Brent came out second
spk_0 up.
spk_0 They didn't change the tactics.
spk_0 They just got after people a
spk_0 little bit better.
spk_0 They narrowed the gaps.
spk_0 They stopped.
spk_0 Manchester City having so much
spk_0 comfort in the game.
spk_0 We didn't see as much as feel
spk_0 phone and we certainly didn't see
spk_0 as much of in Harland who was
spk_0 unplayable in that first half
spk_0 and they just lost their rhythm
spk_0 a little bit, but sometimes in
spk_0 these games when it gets a little
spk_0 bit messy a bit more difficult.
spk_0 The one thing you have to do is
spk_0 get across the line and get three
spk_0 points three points of in
spk_0 chill within Arsenal now and they'll
spk_0 be delighted by that.
spk_0 It was never an easy game wasn't
spk_0 easy on the eye to watch but when
spk_0 you got Harland and this kind of
spk_0 form.
spk_0 He's unstoppable.
spk_0 I don't know about you Michael
spk_0 is I think it's as good as I've
spk_0 ever seen him.
spk_0 Yeah he's been outstabbed in the
spk_0 season.
spk_0 I think what was interesting to see
spk_0 also is coming out onto the pitch
spk_0 here the celebrations from the
spk_0 months that he players are not how
spk_0 big that that win is.
spk_0 Yes in a second half it wasn't
spk_0 great but I think ultimately it's
spk_0 about the three points.
spk_0 I think in that first half like
spk_0 you said to me and you alluded to
spk_0 that they some of the best football
spk_0 I've seen from Man City in the
spk_0 keeping the ball the rotations are
spk_0 really good.
spk_0 I think the one thing for Man City
spk_0 is now the need to finish off
spk_0 games because Brent for take that
spk_0 chance that they've got in a second
spk_0 half of the Thiago again the beating
spk_0 themselves up.
spk_0 But in terms of them and where they
spk_0 are it's just it's a big win
spk_0 and port win for them and where they
spk_0 are in the table now which is three
spk_0 points off our snull and maybe
spk_0 when it's all ready to visit it
spk_0 after only seven games or whatever
spk_0 but that sticky spell of top
spk_0 them and Brighton maybe they
spk_0 wouldn't have expected to be that
spk_0 close to whoever the Premier League
spk_0 leaders well.
spk_0 I was going to be swinging around
spk_0 about all season isn't there.
spk_0 I think that first game at Walsh I
spk_0 thought Man City were back to the
spk_0 best and then a few wobbles and
spk_0 they get to brighten this person
spk_0 you mentioned and then it's just
spk_0 have you got them and telling to
spk_0 get back can you stay in games
spk_0 can you wait for other teams to
spk_0 drop points and that's what's
spk_0 happened this weekend I think
spk_0 with the quality that they have
spk_0 we mentioned Ryan's before the
spk_0 game brings the the energy
spk_0 Harland is he's he's that is best
spk_0 at this moment in time and a big
spk_0 thing they've got now got a really
spk_0 good goalkeeper as well I think
spk_0 Edison when he first came then
spk_0 it was magnificent with his feet
spk_0 the way they wanted to play but
spk_0 Donna rumour I just think since
spk_0 he's come to the club he's really
spk_0 made a big difference.
spk_0 I mean you can see the two of them
spk_0 walking off their Donna rumour
spk_0 and Harland there are about 15
spk_0 yards away from us they are big
spk_0 men.
spk_0 They are big big men Colossal
spk_0 and boat but on the pitch off the
spk_0 pitch and I think one of the other
spk_0 things pepper we delighted about
spk_0 today was maybe not the form
spk_0 second half but the way that they
spk_0 dealt with the froings with the
spk_0 corners with the things that I'm
spk_0 very hard when you play against
spk_0 a side like Brentford you know
spk_0 the balls that were coming into
spk_0 the box and that's what obviously
spk_0 Keith Andrews does so well he
spk_0 makes it so hard for teams to
spk_0 defend but they did it really well
spk_0 today they had to dig in and it'll
spk_0 be delighted with the three points
spk_0 the same and Brentford second half
spk_0 I thought they were really good
spk_0 they made it difficult and it was
spk_0 hard it was really tough when you're
spk_0 chasing the ball in the first half
spk_0 and all you can see is shadows
spk_0 and you can't have a touch and a
spk_0 ball it becomes quite demoralising
spk_0 but they hung in there and they
spk_0 could they could have got something
spk_0 at the at the game in the end.
spk_0 Let's just remind you as we watch
spk_0 Keith Andrews do that lap of
spk_0 appreciation let's just show you
spk_0 what's happened today what's
spk_0 happened across this Premier League
spk_0 round of matches which started on
spk_0 Friday night with that impressive
spk_0 Bournemouth comeback at home to
spk_0 full and as they won that by three
spk_0 goals to one wins her Arsenal
spk_0 Chelsea Spurs and Manchester United
spk_0 yesterday and then these five
spk_0 games on Super Sunday
spk_0 Astambilla seeing off Burnley
spk_0 Everton leaving it late to be
spk_0 Crystal Palace Jack Grelish
spk_0 with the winner there new
spk_0 Castle 2 notty and forest Neil
spk_0 Brighton got a late E.
spk_0 Qualisre at Molony to draw that one
spk_0 all and confirmation finally
spk_0 Manchester City's one they'll win
spk_0 here at Brentford.
spk_0 So this is what they all do to
spk_0 Premier League table and confirmation
spk_0 that Manchester City and now just
spk_0 three points behind Arsenal
spk_0 Bournemouth two points behind them
spk_0 after that win on Friday night
spk_0 and E.
spk_0 Everton or eight after that late
spk_0 win at home to Palace Manchester
spk_0 United's win over Central and yesterday
spk_0 has just squeaked them into the top
spk_0 10.
spk_0 Astambilla going up the table after
spk_0 that win at home to Burnley
spk_0 Newcastle nearly in the top half
spk_0 as well notty and forest will be
spk_0 looking worriedly over their
spk_0 shoulders there now just a point
spk_0 above the drop zone after that
spk_0 defeat at Newcastle Brentford
spk_0 are two points better off.

spk_0 Welcome back to the SkySports Premier
spk_0 League podcast.
spk_0 Let's get back to the studio for more
spk_0 reaction to today's game.
spk_0 To pray for Holland's way from
spk_0 Van den Berg still early Holland
spk_0 transfers in.
spk_0 Just one more.
spk_0 They bounced up in and he is bouncing.
spk_0 And as you can see the man himself
spk_0 is joining us now.
spk_0 Congratulations another goal.
spk_0 Another goal we saw you at end though.
spk_0 You're nearly not getting out of the
spk_0 Manchester City fans as you celebrated.
spk_0 Yeah, yeah, I was tough game and and
spk_0 reminded me a bit about Stalk City
spk_0 with the lap 15 years ago.
spk_0 So I love little win you know and
spk_0 important thing.
spk_0
spk_0 Did you find it a tough game then when
spk_0 you go back to Stalk City in
spk_0 Delab? Did you did you find it a
spk_0 physical battle today?
spk_0 Yeah, of course they are huge and
spk_0 they do thrones from the middle.
spk_0 So of course it's not easy but it's
spk_0 about preparing.
spk_0 It's about being ready for for what's
spk_0 going to come and analyze good then.
spk_0 We did we have a great.
spk_0 Backroom stuff that did their job
spk_0 really well. So all the praise to them.
spk_0 I want to talk to you about your goal.
spk_0 The little battle with Van den Berg all game.
spk_0 And then once you had that under that
spk_0 face says it all that little bit of
spk_0 contact with him here.
spk_0 And then again another one and you
spk_0 push him off and then what talk
spk_0 just about what you do from here?
spk_0 What are you trying to achieve?
spk_0 First five minutes you just kept
spk_0 on pushing me so I was thinking all right.
spk_0 Let's have it so then I started
spk_0 pushing him back and this is for me.
spk_0 This is a proper goal.
spk_0 I don't know.
spk_0 I know with you you just put me on the
spk_0 floor you easy.
spk_0 No this for me this goal is the top.
spk_0 He tries and the finishes well.
spk_0 No this was this is for me one of my
spk_0 better goals because the whole the whole thing I think.
spk_0 Is it just the physical battle in some ways
spk_0 fire you up even more?
spk_0 I mean your face like getting people
spk_0 couldn't see that because we see the girl
spk_0 but your face came a light when we
spk_0 talked about the physical battle.
spk_0 Yeah, you just I think it helps me
spk_0 because to be honest I was a bit tired
spk_0 before the game going into the game.
spk_0 I was thinking it's going to be a tough
spk_0 tough game but then after 10 seconds
spk_0 he started pushing me and he starts
spk_0 motivating me so all praise to him.
spk_0 Honestly he made me want to do that.
spk_0 Are you happy you're getting more chances
spk_0 like this though?
spk_0 You used to play against the low block
spk_0 with not many touches but when you open up
spk_0 like that it's just amazing to see.
spk_0 Yeah I think there is always space
spk_0 even though people are low.
spk_0 You just need the right timing.
spk_0 I think looking at my neck up the goal.
spk_0 There wasn't a lot of space but I found
spk_0 the run and the perfect ball.
spk_0 So yeah I like when people come like this
spk_0 against us as well.
spk_0 It's good.
spk_0 Low block is not easy and you see
spk_0 it's not easy today as well with three
spk_0 big centre backs and two people in front of them
spk_0 five people around us at all times.
spk_0 But so that's why it's not easy
spk_0 and that's why it feels even better.
spk_0 It feels obviously when you look at
spk_0 those goals you score in nine in a
spk_0 Premier League.
spk_0 Is it fair to say that you're in the form
spk_0 of your life?
spk_0 You can say so.
spk_0 I've never felt better than I do now.
spk_0 So yeah, you can say so.
spk_0 Do you know why?
spk_0 Why are you feeling as good as you are feeling?
spk_0 Is it, are you doing anything differently?
spk_0 Is it physically?
spk_0 You've got 18 for Club Country at the moment.
spk_0 Is it a mental thing?
spk_0 A physical thing?
spk_0 What is it?
spk_0 I think it's about preparation.
spk_0 First of all, getting ready for the games
spk_0 and I spoke so many times about it before.
spk_0 You can be physical ready but you need
spk_0 to be mental ready as well.
spk_0 And to be honest, I think with a kid,
spk_0 it makes me even better because I actually
spk_0 disconnects more than ever.
spk_0 I don't think a football at all, which
spk_0 sometimes when you're a bit younger,
spk_0 you think of this and that.
spk_0 And maybe worry a bit a bit about things.
spk_0 But when I go home, I relax even more.
spk_0 So I think I need to give a shout out to my son.
spk_0 What are you doing?
spk_0 Before you go, what are you doing?
spk_0 Don't worry, I want your down.
spk_0 It will come soon on YouTube.
spk_0 So give it two weeks time and you'll see it.
spk_0 Listen, you've got to go on off on international GT
spk_0 as well now.
spk_0 So thank you very much for giving this your time.
spk_0 Thank you.
spk_0 I mean, Michael, what's the number you're dietic?
spk_0 I want to know how your kids relax you
spk_0 because I'm just stressing me even more.
spk_0 But thank you, hopefully not.
spk_0 Thank you very much.
spk_0 You could just see how relaxed he is.
spk_0
spk_0 I think Jamie asked him the question.
spk_0 I think it was you who asked him the question.
spk_0 He just expects to score all the time.
spk_0 I think when he brought to the club,
spk_0 remember listening to an interview with him
spk_0 and he was saying, this is job.
spk_0 He believes his world class.
spk_0 This is what he's here to do.
spk_0 He's been frustrated at times in probably last season,
spk_0 even though his goal record was still tremendous.
spk_0 He's just absolute specimen.
spk_0 I think sometimes when we analyze in the game and stuff,
spk_0 we talk about what he can't do rather than what he can do.
spk_0 And yes, he can improve in holding up the ball.
spk_0 But if you look at his movement in the box,
spk_0 it's just amazing.
spk_0 It's some of the best movement I've ever seen.
spk_0 People talk about, yes, his goal today
spk_0 was physical strength running through.
spk_0 But is IQ knowing when to go, when to hold his run
spk_0 and when to just pull out to the back post
spk_0 and get all these goals?
spk_0 It's just tremendous to see.
spk_0 I tell you what else you've learned today, Mark.
spk_0 And every Premier League defender should be thinking this.
spk_0 Don't try to fight him.
spk_0 Don't kick him, cuddle him.
spk_0 Because as soon as you get into this kind of in,
spk_0 try to intimidate him, try to threaten him,
spk_0 try to get in front of him, he will, you've turned him on.
spk_0 That's exactly what he wanted.
spk_0 And when he asked the question, he said,
spk_0 first him is, I felt a bit tired.
spk_0 And then he started doing this to me and I was like,
spk_0 OK, bring it on.
spk_0 I love some of you.
spk_0 And that's exactly what happened.
spk_0 So in the future, there are some, there's some said,
spk_0 I was just thinking, I'll put it with Emil Hesky.
spk_0 Emil was like that.
spk_0 When someone got Emil angry, that's a sort of thing he could do.
spk_0 But if you were nice to him and let him have it,
spk_0 he'd be like, hey, doing Emil nice to see you.
spk_0 He wasn't so interested in it.
spk_0 And I think that's a little bit the same.
spk_0 We're harland today.
spk_0 They started this war and he certainly finished it.
spk_0 But then that begs the question for any central defenders
spk_0 or defenders in general who are watching this.
spk_0 What do you do with him?
spk_0 Don't fight him.
spk_0 Don't fight him.
spk_0 But the instinct must be, if you've got a six foot three,
spk_0 center forward who's a goal scorer machine
spk_0 that you want to have a battle with him.
spk_0 So what do you do?
spk_0 You retreat as soon as possible.
spk_0 As soon as a ball comes up, as soon as a grad,
spk_0 he has got a ball, he looks up, you drop off.
spk_0 Because once you get into a physical battle with him,
spk_0 it's impossible.
spk_0 You know, you've got pace and strength
spk_0 and there's got a conviction to finish it off as well.
spk_0 Just give yourself another yard.
spk_0 But then what happens if you give him the space, though?
spk_0 Yeah, but the space will be in front of him.
spk_0 If you give yourself five yards and the space is front of him,
spk_0 we've talked about harland for a long time now about him holding up all.
spk_0 That is not his strongest part of the game.
spk_0 So I would be saying in that position,
spk_0 just let him have the ball,
spk_0 soon as it gets you to touch, and then I'm engaging.
spk_0 That is a different running bird there.
spk_0 Try to fight him, try to go too soon.
spk_0 And before you know it, is in a fight with him,
spk_0 and you never catch him.
spk_0 It's also a great insight to what goes on in a elite,
spk_0 elite athletes mind, because he said I've never been happier off the pitch.
spk_0 And I think he looks like that because sometimes when we've interviewed him,
spk_0 and we're all, we'll stand in times it can be a bit surly,
spk_0 can score a couple of goals.
spk_0 You perhaps doesn't give it in if you did you'd like.
spk_0 That's the happiest of ever seen him.
spk_0 We were lucky, we stood in with him,
spk_0 because everyone else sees the analysis,
spk_0 but he's faced it, I think we were talking about that goal.
spk_0 And that gives you a little insight into where he is in his mindset
spk_0 and how comfortable he is in his own skin.
spk_0 And that's why probably he's in, I feel.
spk_0 You know, I mean, last year he started the season really well as well,
spk_0 but it just feels like he's all-round game.
spk_0 And I think that, you asked him the question,
spk_0 with Man City at times,
spk_0 but a bit more direct, that ball down the side as well.
spk_0 I think that's one of the most underrated balls in football.
spk_0 That's what he wants.
spk_0 He doesn't want the ball always into his feet.
spk_0 He wants to run the other way,
spk_0 because when he gets the other side of you,
spk_0 no defenders can deal with him.
spk_0 He seems relaxed on the pitch as well, doesn't he?
spk_0 With his facial expressions as well.
spk_0 And the sort of, yeah, this is just what I do.
spk_0 Whereas as Jamie says,
spk_0 there were times I see him where he may be,
spk_0 I mean, he was still scoring goals,
spk_0 but cut more of a straightered figure.
spk_0 I think it was a little bit different today,
spk_0 because Brentford, there wasn't in a real low block.
spk_0 There was sort of mid block wanting to drop off into that.
spk_0 So that allowed Harlan's space.
spk_0 Yes, he scored a lot of goals,
spk_0 but we've said many times on this show,
spk_0 he's only had four and five touches in the first.
spk_0 That's sort of that can be for straight.
spk_0 And I think now,
spk_0 whether he's scoring goals in the box,
spk_0 whether he's getting these opportunities,
spk_0 it just looks like he's happy.
spk_0 And I think that's the most important.
spk_0 I noticed that when you tried to do a demonstration
spk_0 of how to deal with him, you used Jamie as who you were going to mark.
spk_0 He did it like that, he was a dude, he was a dude,
spk_0 he was a dude, he was a dude, he was a dude, he was a dude, he was a dude.
spk_0 I've got your number, I tell you.

spk_0 I want to win for Manchester City here at the GTEC community stadium.
spk_0 It takes Pat Guadaliole aside three points behind Arsenal
spk_0 in the Premier League and he's with Emma Saunders.
spk_0 MUSIC
spk_0 Well, congratulations.
spk_0 Is that relief, joy, perhaps a mix of both?
spk_0 How do you reflect on today?
spk_0 No, good.
spk_0 They had one chance in the first half and one duel that we lost
spk_0 but a pair of that, okay, more corners, more throw,
spk_0 and more actions and the fruormorse for the Premier League always is there,
spk_0 but we're going to see it.
spk_0 And yeah, we played an outstanding first half
spk_0 that it's closing our best in many, many things.
spk_0 The problem is we're using score goals and the chances we've had
spk_0 and the hell of me could save some more difficult in Premier League
spk_0 so we can have a 1-0 what's happened.
spk_0 But we don't want to match our motire.
spk_0 Of course, we attack less the spaces, but in general,
spk_0 yeah, in general, really pleased for this month
spk_0 since the United game that you grew up a lot in many, many things.
spk_0 And yeah, hopefully we can back healthy the place for the national team.
spk_0 This is it. I mean, there were huge positives in that first half.
spk_0 When you've got 75% of the ball, though, at the break
spk_0 and it's only translating to four shots on target,
spk_0 why do you think that is?
spk_0 Because there are templates behind the ball, right?
spk_0 So the other way is just a piece, another way that you defend it
spk_0 and run in transitions to 40 meters.
spk_0 So, yeah, we could consider more, but it was so clear the chances
spk_0 and the R1s were blocked in the last shot and they were there.
spk_0 So, but the process was really good and from here,
spk_0 I always try to be always for my experience when we won
spk_0 is because we play good, not because a lot or not,
spk_0 or less chances. And the game was there.
spk_0 So, this is the game grows on.
spk_0 You mentioned there are 10 players behind the ball.
spk_0 How much of a mental challenge does it then become for the players?
spk_0 Yeah, but my experience is already here.
spk_0 When 1-0 or second half away games or even a home,
spk_0 always started or everything can happen.
spk_0 They put the ball there, they are told, but we defend really good
spk_0 the throw-ins and everything. So, last season here, we could not win.
spk_0 We happened, this is...
spk_0 We saw you embracing Erling Harland at the end there.
spk_0 I think that's 18 goals now in 11 games.
spk_0 All competitions, club and country.
spk_0 What were you saying to him?
spk_0 Keep going.
spk_0 Keep us tired. I keep going.
spk_0 I've been so important for this season, I would say.
spk_0 We need more goals than the other ones, but the chances were there.
spk_0 So, the Winger have to score more goals.
spk_0 The Winger have to create in the situations one-again-one,
spk_0 one-again-two. They have to finish more.
spk_0 But, yeah, step by step, we do it.
spk_0 As much as we are solid with the team in our game, we'll be fine.
spk_0 Perhaps the only real negative on today is Rodgerie.
spk_0 Could you first confirm exactly what it is he's done?
spk_0 I was right now when you asked me in the beginning of the game,
spk_0 why he's not playing 90 minutes all the time?
spk_0 He had the journalists.
spk_0 Always asked me why he's such a situation at the end.
spk_0 Against the one.
spk_0 So, hopefully, yeah, it's injured.
spk_0 We have found something, hopefully, will not be huge.
spk_0 Just before you go, 250 Premier League wins.
spk_0 That's the milestone that you've reached today.
spk_0 You're the fourth manager to do it, and you're the fastest as well,
spk_0 beating the lights of Sir Alex Ferguson, David Moise,
spk_0 Arson Venger.
spk_0 You've so many accolades.
spk_0 What does that mean to you?
spk_0 I will invite them, all of them, to dinner.
spk_0 I think it's an honor to sit in a table with them.
spk_0 So, it's not bad, it's ten seasons, right?
spk_0 It's many games, and, of course, 250 victories is a lot.
spk_0 I don't know how many games.
spk_0 But, yeah, it is faster for one reason,
spk_0 it's because we won a lot, right?
spk_0 So, we won a lot.
spk_0 And that's why you won a point.
spk_0 It's nice to... I didn't know it was nice.
spk_0 And, yeah, how we call Sir Alex and Arson to go one day.
spk_0 How we buy a skate to be present there, okay?
spk_0 He's doing, yeah.
spk_0 Thanks, Pat.
spk_0 So, we're all going for dinner.
spk_0 I find it an interview.
spk_0 Yeah, absolutely.
spk_0 That is just confirmation of how quickly he has reached 250 Premier League wins
spk_0 in 349 games.
spk_0 So, what's that? 55 quicker than Sir Alex Ferguson,
spk_0 Arson Bengert and David Moise, the other three on that list.
spk_0 And the speed of that does reflect,
spk_0 Mike, their dominance over many seasons under him.
spk_0 Yeah, one of the greatest ever to do it.
spk_0 I think when we've talked about Guadalola, it's not just the wins.
spk_0 It's how they've won, how he's changed the football,
spk_0 the ticker-tacker.
spk_0 A lot of people said it wouldn't work when he first come.
spk_0 Obviously, that first season when it comes
spk_0 was a little bit of disappointment by his standards.
spk_0 But ever since them, they've just took the game to new heights.
spk_0 He's had to bring in players, he's had to suffer injuries,
spk_0 but the standards always remain the same.
spk_0 They dropped off a little bit last season,
spk_0 but for a team to win the Premier League four years in a row,
spk_0 it's just sensational stuff.
spk_0 A constant discussion about how his city teams have evolved
spk_0 over different eras and how he has changed things
spk_0 and adapted things.
spk_0 And this does feel like a different version
spk_0 of Manchester City again, doesn't it?
spk_0 Yeah, that's, and I think there's a lot to do
spk_0 with the introduction of players.
spk_0 I think there's been a lot of talk over this last few months
spk_0 about players adjusting to the Premier League
spk_0 and how difficult it can be.
spk_0 But then I've watched Rinders since he arrived at the Premier League
spk_0 and first game against Wolves, and I was taking
spk_0 about how good he looks, how comfortable he looks.
spk_0 And he gives them a completely different dimension.
spk_0 And I'm not compared to Kevin DeBourne,
spk_0 because he's always been my favourite and always will be
spk_0 because of what he did.
spk_0 But he's a different type of player.
spk_0 Like the way he covers ground, the way he runs with a ball
spk_0 is so graceful.
spk_0 He doesn't maybe spot those eye catching passes that Kevin did.
spk_0 But there are certain things that he does that are just amazing.
spk_0 You know, and this league catches you by surprise.
spk_0 It's tough, it's physical.
spk_0 And he seems to always find time on the ball.
spk_0 He's been a really good addition to the club.
spk_0 And sometimes I've spent vast amounts of money
spk_0 to get the superstars and if only they can get in
spk_0 because of the money.
spk_0 He was one that probably lots of other clubs
spk_0 would have looked at, maybe not quite sure,
spk_0 played at a similar land.
spk_0 And obviously had a good career.
spk_0 But he looks like a really, really, really good bit of recruitment.
spk_0 I've been very impressed.
spk_0 So how high do you think you can go?
spk_0 We're talking...
spk_0 Yeah, I mean, we're just keep doing what he's doing.
spk_0 I mean, in terms of how far he can go,
spk_0 he can be the catalyst in that midfield.
spk_0 And take Manchester City back to challenging the winning title,
spk_0 winning titles quicker than probably what we thought,
spk_0 because it's going to take a little bit of time,
spk_0 because the players they've lost.
spk_0 But yeah, and especially when you lose Rodry at the moment,
spk_0 and he's going to be in and out, as Pep's rightly said,
spk_0 when you come back from an injury, it's never easy.
spk_0 And he's struggling with other parts of his body
spk_0 and he asked to adjust to that.
spk_0 But when that happens, that's when you need other players
spk_0 to step up, fill food and a step up, step up.
spk_0 And he looks back to his best.
spk_0 Rinders, as I say, has been fantastic.
spk_0 And sometimes it's a different players.
spk_0 And when you have Kevin, the broiner there,
spk_0 at times you're so reliant on him
spk_0 and everybody else waits for him to do something.
spk_0 Now it's maybe more of a collective.
spk_0 And that's what we might see with Manchester City.
spk_0 That's the only negative really for City from this evening, isn't it?
spk_0 Rodry and obviously Pep Guadaliole are said to Emma.
spk_0 They hope it's not too serious and they will wait and see
spk_0 something tweaked in that right hamstring.
spk_0 Yeah, it doesn't look good.
spk_0 I think Pep Balluda to it in his interview there.
spk_0 Everyone's asking why he doesn't play all the minutes.
spk_0 I think he's just trying to protect him.
spk_0 When you come back from a bad knee injury,
spk_0 you do get these little niggas of a bit of car
spk_0 for it to be hamstring or whatever it may be.
spk_0 But City needing back and needing back to his best as soon as possible
spk_0 if you want to challenge for this league.
spk_0 Because you've mentioned Rinders, Rodry,
spk_0 Ballendor winner is one of the best midfielders I've ever seen in the Premier League.
spk_0 He's different, isn't he?
spk_0 He saw the effect of him last year.
spk_0 And the good thing is they've got an international break now
spk_0 to give him a bit of time, a bit of treatment and get to the bottom.
spk_0 Because I know what Pep's saying about injuries.
spk_0 When you have a crucial or a long injury,
spk_0 some players come back and then they're fine.
spk_0 He, for whatever reason, is maybe
spk_0 is finding it a bit more difficult.
spk_0 And you see those games coming up, you know,
spk_0 you're going to need him.
spk_0 But what they're showing in the period that he's in and out of the team,
spk_0 they are still effective.
spk_0 They're still playing well.
spk_0 I mean, you all have both had injuries in your careers.
spk_0 He was on the bench with the injury and
spk_0 moving all right there to complain about a decision.
spk_0 But that right hamstring as well.
spk_0 Is well taped up at that stage.
spk_0 And when you're coming back from a really serious injury,
spk_0 like he is, then the niggles are to be expected, aren't they?
spk_0 As you try and find some kind of fitness and form and get back into a routine.
spk_0 Yeah, I think that's what Pep, again,
spk_0 what was talking about is just protecting them a little bit.
spk_0 The injuries I had, I just couldn't recover from.
spk_0 And this league is so intense.
spk_0 We keep talking about the Mart Games that not just Man City have,
spk_0 that modern day football and now,
spk_0 it do need a little bit of protection because it's too intense.
spk_0 It's too intense and the way he plays in that minute field,
spk_0 it's difficult, isn't it, J?
spk_0 Yeah, and I think as well, when the game's coming thick and fast,
spk_0 and he has to remember, and if I could give him one bit of advice,
spk_0 because it's almost my specialty subject injury,
spk_0 something like that.
spk_0 Well, that's why I didn't pass to you.
spk_0 We, we.
spk_0 Yeah, I was going to do that.
spk_0 But no, I've retired at 31 and that was because I kept probably
spk_0 putting myself into positions instead of just resting,
spk_0 instead of like thinking, you're out for a couple of months
spk_0 and you try to come back and play in a month, you know,
spk_0 that's not beneficial.
spk_0 You need to just at time wait for your bodies to heal and then
spk_0 you'll be, you can, you can take your time if you like,
spk_0 because it's rushing it and I totally get it because he's a,
spk_0 he wants to play. He's a ball on door winner and.
spk_0 Well, that's the other thing is that the noise around him and this demand,
spk_0 well, hang on, you've got the ball on door winner.
spk_0 When's he going to be back?
spk_0 When's he going to be back?
spk_0 Absolutely.
spk_0 And he was one of the players that was speaking up at the time when he picked up the injury against Arsenal.
spk_0 He was saying that with players are getting the demands on players are too much.
spk_0 There's too many competitions, the club world cup.
spk_0 And if you look at Arsenal right in the, sorry, if you look at Chelsea right now and the injuries that they've got,
spk_0 it's no coincidence.
spk_0 PSG have picked up injuries.
spk_0 We have to have a duty of care with players.
spk_0 But I totally get it when you're, when you've been out that long and you feel okay,
spk_0 you just want to play and you're going to say to pet please.
spk_0 I mean, I'm ready and because of the importance of what he brings,
spk_0 you will play him.
spk_0 But sometimes, you know, you have to let the sports scientists and everybody take care of him
spk_0 and manage his minutes carefully because you don't want maybe something else to happen that could cost him.
spk_0 It's hard though, isn't it, Jamie?
spk_0 Is that that fine line between one and making yourself available for the team and then protecting yourself?
spk_0 I did myself damage with, with my knee.
spk_0 I shouldn't, I shouldn't have been playing, but I was captain at Villa when it happened.
spk_0 I put myself out there and I never pressured to.
spk_0 But I didn't feel pressure from the staff or the fans or anything.
spk_0 I've been in pressure myself, you know, you come from Manchester City, you win the league,
spk_0 you go to Fiorentina, it doesn't work out for you.
spk_0 Then you come back to Asden Villa as the quote unquote start signing.
spk_0 You want to be available on the pitch and when you're not available,
spk_0 you do stuff I was getting knee and my knee drained before trading,
spk_0 going out and playing on on a Saturday.
spk_0 And I look back now thinking what was it doing?
spk_0 I was never right, but I understand going back to Rodbury,
spk_0 why he would put yourself forward because you want to be on the pitch.
spk_0 Would you, to just take him out, not the firing line for a bit,
spk_0 but to give him the best possible chance for a long-term recovery, so the niggles aren't that,
spk_0 would you give Nick a guns out, there's a Rod?
spk_0 Yeah, I think he needs a run.
spk_0 I think he started okay in the first couple games when he came to the club.
spk_0 And then he sort of pitted out a little bit,
spk_0 he's not sort of grabbed that position like we know it can.
spk_0 I think in his defense, he's more than number eight than a number six.
spk_0 So a lot of people are thinking he's going to go in that,
spk_0 number six role and start dictating.
spk_0 And in Mancetta's team, he can do that,
spk_0 but he's not going to be at the level of Rodbury right now.
spk_0 Players need time, need time to bed in, show exactly,
spk_0 maybe this is an opportunity for him now,
spk_0 show exactly what he can do,
spk_0 but I think he's more than number eight than a number six.
spk_0 So look at the bigger picture and show you the top half of the Premier League table.
spk_0 Manchester City three points off Arsenal.
spk_0 Remember they had those defeats to Tottenham and Brighton a little bit earlier.
spk_0 And you look at the sort of three clubs in the main
spk_0 who are considered to be in a title race,
spk_0 they've all had this period of being questioned inside seven games.
spk_0 Jamie, haven't they?
spk_0 City with those two defeats,
spk_0 Arsenal for not being adventurous enough when they went to Amfield.
spk_0 And Liverpool were in that period at the moment.
spk_0 Yep, absolutely.
spk_0 And I think it might be that kind of season.
spk_0 I genuinely believe that if you were to ask me who
spk_0 would, who shoes you'd like to be in right now,
spk_0 you'd have to say Arsenal.
spk_0 And that was before again where people were questioning if they lose at Newcastle
spk_0 or they are at the title race.
spk_0 And that's how quickly things can change.
spk_0 You know, Liverpool were unbelievable last year.
spk_0 I use, I use the analogy that they climbed the mountain.
spk_0 They were, they had so much togetherness.
spk_0 They were a desire to go win the title as a team.
spk_0 And everything was spot on.
spk_0 You know, they had players that were playing at the peak of their form,
spk_0 you know, Virgil Van Dyke and Mohamed Saller.
spk_0 And everything was absolutely right.
spk_0 And they blew teams away in the first half for the season.
spk_0 This year it's not going to be the case.
spk_0 And I just look at Arsenal and I see that they
spk_0 almost have what Liverpool had last year.
spk_0 And Liverpool have to somehow turn it around and get that sort of
spk_0 togetherness back.
spk_0 And that belief, because it's sometimes,
spk_0 I wasn't lucky enough to win a title.
spk_0 But when you can see when a team are going to win it
spk_0 and United were relentless at it,
spk_0 you can see that they would know what they had to do.
spk_0 And that's what Liverpool have to find again.
spk_0 And it's a little wobble.
spk_0 It's, I use, I said, using the analogy,
spk_0 it's a mini crisis, but they will get through it.
spk_0 Because the players, they've got are too good for it not to happen.
spk_0 But they need players to get back in form.
spk_0 Manchester City have got the know-how as Michael Well knows.
spk_0 You mentioned it earlier on, I mean, title is everyone.
spk_0 This is Arsenal's first time.
spk_0 And I think right now for me, they are the favourites.
spk_0 The squad that they've built and the players that they're built in
spk_0 gives them a real advantage.
spk_0 But you don't think that they could necessarily be as relentless
spk_0 as previous title winners have maybe been
spk_0 because of the nature of the league?
spk_0 Well, you don't, I don't think, what Arsenal can have.
spk_0 Yeah, yeah, yeah.
spk_0 No, they have that look.
spk_0 They have that look right now.
spk_0 They could be as relentless as they live a plus.
spk_0 I think right now they are, they're the ones to be.
spk_0 You know, I think, when I watched them at Newcastle,
spk_0 that was such a big moment from them.
spk_0 And we're talking seven games in.
spk_0 Years ago, we didn't even put the lead table up to six games.
spk_0 But now we are, we've, we've already going up.
spk_0 Is they're going to happen?
spk_0 Is rubbish?
spk_0 Is OK?
spk_0 And then, you know, we're writing people off left, right, and centre.
spk_0 Teams off.
spk_0 So everything can change.
spk_0 But as we talk right now after seven games,
spk_0 an international break upon us, I think Arsenal do look the team to be.
spk_0 But do not write Liverpool off.
spk_0 But they say they have to find that that belief again.
spk_0 Because it has been difficult for them this preseason.
spk_0 Make them.
spk_0 I think it's about who holds their nerve.
spk_0 When we won the title in 2012,
spk_0 we didn't believe we could win the title.
spk_0 Then United Go points clear.
spk_0 Or we were points clear.
spk_0 Then United went point clear.
spk_0 They dropped points.
spk_0 And then we had to go into the final stages,
spk_0 needing to win.
spk_0 I think there's a different psychological battle with yourself and the team.
spk_0 And everyone around you, if you go five or six points clear,
spk_0 I would rather be chasing than be ahead,
spk_0 like when we won, when we want to lead.
spk_0 Because no one's expecting to.
spk_0 I think Arsenal now, they've got the players.
spk_0 Jamie's a little bit, they've got the squad,
spk_0 but they just need to get over the line.
spk_0 And that is the bit.
spk_0 Because it's going to be, it was all saying Liverpool at me.
spk_0 It was all saying Liverpool.
spk_0 It started to mean, everyone was saying Liverpool.
spk_0 It was talking about all the signings.
spk_0 Esat is going to be the different.
spk_0 And it's EK has been outstanding as well.
spk_0 And now a week later, saying, well, Arsenal,
spk_0 I think it's just who holds the nerve,
spk_0 the best at the right time.
spk_0 An emotion.
spk_0 A motion played a part.
spk_0 There's no doubt at all for Arsenal that emotion has got in the way
spk_0 in the last few years for Arsenal at times.
spk_0 You know, they have to, they have to stay calm.
spk_0 You know, but with the players they've got,
spk_0 you know, the only thing is, I would have got a pizza up an injury yesterday
spk_0 and he looks like he'd found a little bit of form again.
spk_0 But there's going to be so many twists and turns.
spk_0 And I looked at Matt and City first after they,
spk_0 and we all, we both did and we're like, wow, this is like a real team.
spk_0 But then you look at the second half and Brent could have easily knitted an equalizer.
spk_0 Absolutely.
spk_0 With Tiago at a big moment in the first couple of minutes of the second half,
spk_0 when he goes through and that's why you paid a big money for Dona Roma.
spk_0 You know, that's what he does.
spk_0 It was an amazing save it and then really important time
spk_0 because if it goes to one, all you never know,
spk_0 the game could then turn and then you're massively under pressure.

spk_0 Now, let's get back to the Sky Sports Premier League podcast.
spk_0 Let's get reaction to Brentford's defeat here here's Keith Andrews with Emma.
spk_0 Okay, with the way that your team have found a way back into that game in the second half,
spk_0 are you disappointed to come away with nothing?
spk_0 Yeah, I think that's probably about right.
spk_0 I think Second Half felt we were the more dominant team at the better chance.
spk_0 As clearly, they had one shot in the second half.
spk_0 I felt we were on nerve them in the second half and made it really uncomfortable for them.
spk_0 Trade wanted to warn very good opportunity and just look more dangerous, look more like us in
spk_0 the second half. So to come away with nothing is disappointing clearly.
spk_0 Starting from that first half, I think it's the first 45 minutes that Brentford have had in
spk_0 the Premier League where they've not managed to get a touch in the opposition box, which I guess
spk_0 sums up just how tricky the challenge was today. For you, when you break it down, why were they
spk_0 so difficult to disrupt? Very good team. They dominate the ball, every single game this season,
spk_0 they've had periods, some larger periods of notice of when they control proceedings. It's the
spk_0 nature of where the team is set up on the level of opposition that we're playing today in terms
spk_0 of the individual quality. In the main, I felt in the first half, they had one really good
spk_0 opportunity. Rinders had a volley-work weaving saves apart from that very, very little.
spk_0 Love was in front of us. We wanted to do a bit more with the ball clearly.
spk_0 And we felt where we grew into the game for sure, but second half was more like us.
spk_0 As you grew in then, what were the seeds that were planted? Where did it start turning for you?
spk_0 I thought the start of the second half overall, I thought the first 10-15 minutes at the time for
spk_0 what we wanted to do. I felt we always needed to energise it then by bringing subs on to make sure
spk_0 we had fresh legs to get around the midfield. On top end of the pitch we're always going to be
spk_0 a threat with the type of players that we have there. Yeah, disappointing overall.
spk_0 So it's fine margins, Thiago with that opportunity. He's been so clinical. When you look at that,
spk_0 perhaps did he just have a bit too much thinking time in a game which was so short on moments with
spk_0 the way man's city were playing? Yeah, I haven't seen it back and my feeling at the time was that he
spk_0 never quite had it on the control really. And obviously he's up against the top goalkeeper.
spk_0 It's got two really good goals last weekend. Thiago will get a lot of goals for us this season.
spk_0 Unfortunately, he doesn't take the opportunity today. Ultimately it's a defeat,
spk_0 but are you quite encouraged actually as you leave here today by what your players have done
spk_0 in that second half the way that they've turned that around? I'm very proud of the performance.
spk_0 I think I'm very proud of the group overall this season. I think a lot's been made of the changes
spk_0 at the club and the narrative around the club. I think when you look at the second half performance
spk_0 against a team of that caliber and the results that we've had in recent weeks since the last
spk_0 international break, I think we can be really encouraged about what we can do over the coming months.
spk_0 Thank you very much. Cheers. Thank you. Thank you.
spk_0 He's right to look at the bigger picture, isn't he? Yeah, absolutely. I think it's been a really
spk_0 good start, especially at home. It'd be Ashton Villa, Manchester United, a point against Chelsea,
spk_0 seven points. He'll be looking to improve the waveform. That'll be something they'll try to do.
spk_0 They did that at the back in the last season and I think it would be delighted with it. It's not
spk_0 been easy for him. I doesn't want to elude to it, but I think he's done a really good job.
spk_0 The moments today, certainly second half, as I mentioned, Tiago, he scores that. Everything can change.
spk_0 And it's tough. You're planning against one of the best sides in world football and you've got to
spk_0 chase the ball. You've got to find a bit of rhythm in the game. And they never quite got to
spk_0 grips in the first half. But second half, there was a vast improvement. He'll be looking at that,
spk_0 thinking that's the next step we've got to make. Get the waveform sorted, but I think so far,
spk_0 I think he's been a really good start for Keith Andrews. Don't you think he's done ever so well
spk_0 as well when you lose, Vissa and Embermo? You take them, the goals that they've got at the team.
spk_0 I think he's doing a really intelligent job in what he can get out the players. I said last
spk_0 week and he wanted to go a little bit more direct. Couldn't quite do that in the first half.
spk_0 Second half, there was a little bit more energy. Henderson started getting on the ball a little bit more.
spk_0 And he could only manage what he's got at his disposal at this time. And I think for a manager,
spk_0 he was coming into it who was formerly a set pitch coach to come in as a head coach. I think he's
spk_0 doing a good job. The Tiago chance was pivotal, wasn't it? And he just couldn't get it out of his
spk_0 feet. No, the ball was never his friend for one second there. And last week he scored a great
spk_0 goal against Manchester United, but he's fighting with it all the way. It's never comfortable. It's never
spk_0 really where he wants it. You can see it here. It's really good movement. He just gets up,
spk_0 gets a little bit of luck now. You're thinking right, compose yourself. Get a good touch on it. He
spk_0 has a little look over his right shoulder, which I think causes him a bit of a problem.
spk_0 And then he forgets about the ball. But there was never really got it set where he wants it's
spk_0 bubbling. It's hitting his one foot. Then he gets there just in time, but Don Aruma makes
spk_0 himself so big. You know, he's a big guy as it is. And that was a really, really important save
spk_0 Mike. Yeah, it was. And I mentioned Don Aruma, I think forgetting him for 26 million pounds. It's
spk_0 a steal. Yes, he might be on big wages or whatever it may be, but that could be the difference
spk_0 between city challenging and not challenging. That's the difference, isn't it? When somebody that
spk_0 big comes out and spreads themselves, it's going to be very difficult to get around it.
spk_0 Yeah, I mean, you know, winning the Champions League with PSG, I was scratching my head. How is
spk_0 even available? The manager, the manager already made his decision. Sometimes it happens in
spk_0 football. And I feel a little bit sorry for the goalkeeper Man City just bought Trafford because
spk_0 he's amazing talent. He will be a top goalkeeper. Now he's having to play second fiddle at this
spk_0 moment in time, but I totally understand why Man City took the decision to buy him because the
spk_0 size of him, he's shot stopping ability, he comes for crosses. Yes, he's not Edison on the ball,
spk_0 but he's good enough on the ball for what Man City want to do.
spk_0 What? And he's also a winner, isn't he? You're probably the goalkeeper who is a winner.
spk_0 Yeah, absolutely. There was obviously this narrative that he's not very good with his feet.
spk_0 I'm like, well, but he can stop the ball going in and then there. I think that is important.
spk_0 And you can see, and I've watched PSG this last few years as we all have, and they've been one
spk_0 of the best sides I've seen in a long time, almost reminiscent of what Barcelona were years ago.
spk_0 So you don't all, the goalkeeper is obviously vitally important, especially to Peps teams over
spk_0 the years, but it doesn't make all the difference all the time and PSG have proven it.
spk_0 And you can look at what he's going to bring this season, and there'll be more,
spk_0 well, there'll be dozens of moments like that. There'll be so many when he just gets you those
spk_0 three points at the right time because you need that, you need that quality. And he is one of
spk_0 the best goalkeepers in the world. How did Brentford, I know they didn't win, but how did they get back in
spk_0 in that second half? IE to create the odd problem for Manchester City because they stuck to the same
spk_0 formation, didn't they? And we thought they might change it at the brough. Yeah, I thought they
spk_0 would. I felt a half time, you might have maybe sacrificed one of the centre backs and maybe
spk_0 gone to a four, three, three and just bring on one of the forwards and give yourself a bit more
spk_0 energy in midfield. He didn't, he stuck with it. They sort of, they changed from a five to a
spk_0 four defensively at times, but they, what they did was two things. One, I think Manchester City
spk_0 got a bit complacent. I think they stopped playing as well. That was so easy from in the first half.
spk_0 And then second half, they just stepped up the pitch. I was watching key fangers from
spk_0 them from the box and he was just employing his team to get up, get closer, get closer to people,
spk_0 then make those gaps a bit tighter. Because I think in the first half, they showed them too much
spk_0 respect. Then they start to win second balls, all of a sudden, then you start to get
spk_0 froings and you get your corners. Then you start, Jordan Henderson played a couple of fantastic,
spk_0 delicious balls into the into the box, but no one quite read it. One of those moments goes
spk_0 your way. It's completely different, but I think that's a lot to do with good management as well
spk_0 from Keith. He realised what we had to do. We had to raise the energy, a good team talk. That can
spk_0 be the difference. Just show you the results that Brentford have had so far. This season,
spk_0 their strength as we've been saying has come at home, at the G Tech beating Villa, the draw with
spk_0 Chelsea, that very good win against Manchester United last weekend. The disappointment, really,
spk_0 full of monotony and forest in particular, micro. No, Keith was not happy with how they performed
spk_0 in the first half at forest. They actually could probably have done better as they missed a penalty,
spk_0 didn't they, against Sunderland as well. That was maybe a missed opportunity. Yeah, I think you
spk_0 look at the fixtures and think, okay, we should do better in these games, but actually, I actually
spk_0 think they're better at team who can play on the counter attack, on the transition. I feel as though
spk_0 the way they want to play with Sharda up top down one side, Ego are going through the middle.
spk_0 That suits the way they want to play. I think sometimes when he playing the teams, not
spk_0 a suspect, not in the top six, you will go a little bit higher up the pitch and all the combinations
spk_0 and not the same. Of course, you want to get up the pitch and squeeze him and press and do all
spk_0 those sort of things, but I just think on the counter attack is when they're at the best.
spk_0 And if they want to stay in his league, they're going to have to perform better in those sort of
spk_0 games. Yeah, you'd agree with you. Yeah, I should. No, because I think the results where they have
spk_0 got wins. And I certainly last week, and I know Gary made a point in commentary and I sort of
spk_0 agreed with him and I was arriving at the stadiums, I think, how will this game unfold?
spk_0 Because of that win last week gives you a bit of a free hit. So if they don't win today,
spk_0 it's all right, because you've got the three points last week. But I feel they are going to be so
spk_0 competitive in games, but I'm sure Keith will be just thinking to himself, we can't just rely on
spk_0 this place being a fortress. Yes, it will help, but you've got to make sure, and this is no
spk_0 disrespect, because after the players they've lost, you've got to make sure you stay in the
spk_0 Premier League. That's going to be the key. And the teams that have come up are competitive.
spk_0 They're going to make it difficult for you. Something they're going to do well. Leads are
spk_0 we've already shown. They're going to do well as well. Burnley, so they've got to make sure
spk_0 that they finish above them. But I've got more than enough belief with the quality they've got
spk_0 that they will do that. Thanks for listening to the Sky Sports Premier League podcast.
