spk_0
Next up for the 40-Waters is a week six game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
spk_0

spk_0
And yeah, this game Thursday night week four of the NFL season week five actually of the NFL season will be one that will be remembered for a while.
spk_0
I mean, it was something special as the 49ers short-handed playing without Brock Birdy playing without Joanne Jennings and Ricky Pearceau.
spk_0
Nick Bosa out for the season still haven't seen Brandon I youth this year.
spk_0
George Kiddles played about a quarter of football only 21 snaps and the 49ers still went to LA against the team that's probably considered the favorite to win the NFC West.
spk_0
And they put together a really amazing performance in a 26 23 victory and it was Mac Jones, it was Kendrick Barn, it was Alfred Collins, it was Fred Warner of course.
spk_0
So it was you know a really nice mixture in this 49ers victory of the veteran guys who have been around a long time, coupled with the young guys, the rookies who really stepped up in this game.
spk_0
As well as some veteran guys who are newcomers, you know like I mentioned Mac Jones and Kendrick Barn.
spk_0
So let's start off on Friday, Kyle Shanahan talked to the the local media and provided an injury update.
spk_0
And there were four new injuries coming out of this game and it doesn't look great from standpoint, especially on the defensive line.
spk_0
This was a defensive line that was playing shorthanded as it was and they come out of this game with some injuries, Kalea Davis starting defensive tackled fractured his hand.
spk_0
He was scheduled to have surgery on Friday.
spk_0
So it's going to be probably a close call whether he's available to play week six against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, E-Tor Gros Mautos, who is a very valuable player on that defensive line for his ability to line up at defensive end and base situations in this slide inside.
spk_0
In nickel situations to rush rush the pass or similar to Michael Williams, he's going to miss some time.
spk_0
He had a hamstring injury and so that I think you could expect that to be weeks that he'll be out of the lineup.
spk_0
And then one that we weren't aware of Thursday night after the game Alfred Collins, who makes the big play of the game to strip Kyron Williams of the ball at the goal line and then recover it.
spk_0
And then later played it certainly played a role in the 49ers fourth and one stop of Kyron Williams.
spk_0
He sustained a knee sprain, Kyle sheen he had said that he will be evaluated when they get back from this long weekend.
spk_0
So the other things to look at well, we don't know necessarily what Brock pretty status is.
spk_0
It, you know, it might be a long shot that he's cleared and 100% healthy to play against Tampa Bay, but for the players have to feel very good about where they are with Matt Jones as their back up.
spk_0
But a couple of guys, three guys who are on injury list Malik Mustafa, the four players are planning to open the practice window for him.
spk_0
He had that graph that was detached in the for the final game of the 2024 season.
spk_0
So he had ACL surgery in January. He's making really good progress for the airs expect to open the practice window for him when they return on Monday.
spk_0
However, they most likely will not do that with George Kittle and Brandon Ayuk.
spk_0
Brandon Ayuk as I understand it's still no time frame to get him back out there practicing.
spk_0
And now that both Mustafa and Ayuk who started on PUP, they've been out for four weeks.
spk_0
So the practice window can open for any time at any time for them.
spk_0
And then Kittle, this was his fourth game that he set out.
spk_0
So he's eligible to start practicing and return to action whenever he's deemed ready.
spk_0
What Shana had said about Kittle is that he's coming along, progressing well, but it's a long shot for him to play this week.
spk_0
They're looking like more of a possibility for that next game.
spk_0
And that would be week seven against the Atlanta Falcons.
spk_0
That would be on Sunday night football.
spk_0
So Shana had talked about just the emotions of this game.
spk_0
And I think this is something that probably everybody can relate to.
spk_0
He said it's only the fifth game of the year.
spk_0
So you don't know the ramifications of what that game holds for the entire season.
spk_0
But he said it was unusually exhausting.
spk_0
And he said the amount of stamina that was needed as a player, a coach, and a fan.
spk_0
And I think a lot of people can relate to that.
spk_0
I mean, it was just a real, it was a grinder.
spk_0
It was a meat grinder of a game from start to finish.
spk_0
And the 49ers find a way to outlast the LA Rams in that victory.
spk_0
So overcoming the injuries, he described it as a special one that he'll remember for a long time.
spk_0
So again, the young guy stepping up, how about Jake Tonjes, really doing a good job playing in place of George Kiddell scoring three touchdowns.
spk_0
He leads or he tied for the team lead in touchdowns with Christian McCaffrey.
spk_0
So Mac Jones, the star of this game for the 49ers, he was dealing with cramps, his arm was cramping.
spk_0
I don't know exactly what was going on with that knee issue.
spk_0
But Shannon Han said there was one point in the game where he was expecting Adrian Martinez up from the practice squad to go into this game.
spk_0
And he was actually calling a play for Adrian Martinez.
spk_0
And then he looked up and there was Mac Jones in the huddle.
spk_0
So Mac Jones, there was a point seven minutes left in the game.
spk_0
Shannon Han said where they were going to send him into the locker room to get an IV because of the cramping.
spk_0
But in that time frame, only seven minutes left, they just didn't have time to do that.
spk_0
So he's shoveling bananas into his mouth to get some potassium in there.
spk_0
And he outlasted the Rams defense.
spk_0
He played well really just a memorable game all the way around.
spk_0
And so nobody I'd rather break down the game with and just talk about what we will all witnessed on Thursday night and kind of get his big picture view of, you know, some of the plays obviously in the game that stood out to him, but also the big picture view of the 49ers and where they are after five games of the regular season.
spk_0
They have a four and one record.
spk_0
There are three in O within the division.
spk_0
Nobody I'd rather talk to about all that than Greg Papa. He will always be the voice of the 49ers.
spk_0
And we will get to Greg and we will will chat a lot about this game after these words from our sponsors. So stick around Greg Papa coming up on Ask Papa.

spk_0
All right now, always a pleasure for the to bring in Greg Poppa for the Ask Poppa section of 49ers' talk.
spk_0
And Greg, that one Thursday night was one for the ages, wasn't it? I mean that was just a phenomenal football game from start to finish.
spk_0
Well, one of the best games we've seen in the regular season. I do remember the first time way back in 2017 when Kyle won against Sean McVey.
spk_0
The 90s were a great team. That was a 41-39 final on a Thursday night. Remember the Trent Taylor China route to score a touchdown.
spk_0
They ran the same concept and two point conversion. He and CJ Bethe didn't read it the same way and you wound up losing.
spk_0
But they weren't a very good team, obviously back then. This game was incredible.
spk_0
I heard you calling it the most improbable win of Kyle's run. I mean they were favored to win, Maddie. How many consecutive games?
spk_0
Like a whole season and a half. They were the betting favorites to win. And then the line just went.
spk_0
I think it was one one and a half. There's three and a half, two days before the game. And then when we got the news that Brock and Ricky and third in Taiwan weren't going to play a shot to eight and a half.
spk_0
And honestly, during my radio show, because I watched the Rams and I watched every guy. I said, I'm just trying to close my eyes and visualize how they could do this.
spk_0
And I was having a hard time coming up with it, but I underestimated the brains of Kyle Shanahan and the brains and execution of the Mac Daddy, Mac Jones and then Kendrick born.
spk_0
And that that opening drive to go right down the field and score that touchdown.
spk_0
They broke out a couple of plays. Remember the Hollywood play. Yeah, they ran against the Rams.
spk_0
Well, it's a fake. It's a fake screen left. Christian went in motion across. It's a fake screen left, a fake screen right. And it went to George Kittle. The Hollywood play was in L.A.
spk_0
They actually wanted it to be the Hollywood was acting and they wanted Kittle to go to the ground like fall down and then get up. But he folds out with that much time.
spk_0
So they ran into Tungus on the on the first drive. You know, after born picks up the first in 20 with the dash through and I mean, Kendrick played his ass off.
spk_0
Drop one, but you know, ball, they came his way a lot, but they ran that Hollywood play was actually a play Kyle stole years ago where they ran it with Steve Young.
spk_0
And it was Mike Shanahan's play. It wound up going to Dr. John Frank over the middle of Kyle ran that play a couple of times with Kittle one time against the Rams, one time in Seattle for a touchdown.
spk_0
And that's always been the weakness of the Rams defense is the linebacker level, although landman Billy Bob played better in this game. I got him as credit, but they didn't pick out Troy Reader on the touchdown to McCaffrey.
spk_0
And then they ran the jet pass reverse flea flicker screen to McCaffrey, which was a similar play they ran to George Kittle last year, if you recall on Sunday night football against the Cowboys earlier in the day.
spk_0
I was watching Kittle was watching. He texted Brian Flurry as tight end coach. Hey, the Lions just ran this play to the corner.
spk_0
Yeah, we just tip it off and the Cowboys watch it goes, well, we're all right. But normally when you're on that flea flicker action, you're looking deep.
spk_0
But to Marcus Robinson just gave up on his route. They were all blocking and the play was designed to go to the screen the whole offensive line because the action went jet pass to McCaffrey.
spk_0
They all went with them at the point is I'm getting to in detail Kyle Shanahan, those two opening drives.
spk_0
Or he scripts the plays just set the tone to get off. Now we all believe I'm trying to close my eyes and visualize well, open your eyes.
spk_0
Look at it. They did it. They're up 14 nothing. Boom, boom. And then they then they settled in for the dog fight that you knew was coming with them.
spk_0
And they just came up with so many big plays in Mac Jones. I mean, wow. How tough is that guy? He's getting hit first half, not as much right away in the second half.
spk_0
They started hitting him, which aired first and then Byron Young and even after he got rid of it, you know, they know it's a left knee brace even though he's got it inside his football pants.
spk_0
They're going to hit him and they hit him and hit him and hit him. And I think the one where he was grabbing his calf. I don't know if he said after the game. You do want to talk about it. I think the brace on the left leg like dog into his calf at that point.
spk_0
Yeah, I think I think it pinched him right or there's something. I don't know. Did he ever say because he didn't want to talk about it.
spk_0
No, and it kind of looked like maybe there were, you know, he had cramps. I know he had cramps in his forearm, but might have had cramps in his leg.
spk_0
But now he's for blowing his potassium. There was one point he was closing his eyes and didn't physical therapy. That is hard. I mean, wow. But what it was time to play.
spk_0
The guy just his ball placement. Matt is just Mac Jones. Bill Walsh always talked about half a hand. If the if the if the defense is on, you know, the inside of my right hand and I'm one of the now going.
spk_0
The ball's got to be half a hand half a body. It's got to be on the left hand. We saw Matthew Matthew Stafford does it at the highest level.
spk_0
The touchdown pass to Kyron Williams. Matthew Stafford missing froze in this game a lot to Devonte, but Mac Jones, Mac the night, the Mac daddy just always half a body.
spk_0
You can't miss back anywhere in the field to play where it's going to get broken up just constantly.
spk_0
The touchdown pass to McCaffrey. Go up. They ran 23 personnel. I know I'm going to have to go to running backs three tight ends on the field.
spk_0
They had no wide receivers on that play because they wanted the trap Troy Reader on the field. He's the guy. He's the X. I thought it was landman Billy Bob, but he went to Mount Avista high school. My guy Chris Badcock, our statistician coached him.
spk_0
He's like, get off of landman. He can play. I'm like, okay. He can play. We're still going at him, but they went at Reader down that play and they just motion McCaffrey out.
spk_0
And the Rams didn't didn't switch it. They had Reader trail on the out cut. Watch Mac role to was left again.
spk_0
It wasn't horrible coverage, but who's going to cover McCaffrey? Certainly not Troy Reader there and Max ball outside hand beautiful catch turn touchdown CMC.
spk_0
Troy Reader on the field for only two defensive play and one of them one of them was I mean, Kyle she had basically ran over to the Rams sideline and said, hey, will you put Troy Reader on the field?
spk_0
Well, why do you do that? I was texting with Tim Ryan. We got to get 51 on the field. Yeah. And I said, going to be run more 12, which is one back to tight ends or what if you run more 22, which is two backs to tight ends.
spk_0
And he thought, you know, maybe they can do it out of 11. They took it a step further. And then how many how many times of the Niners run a formation with two running backs on the field?
spk_0
Three tight ends, 23. So the Rams are going to match up with their heavy package linebackers and safeties. But the thing is right before the snap, the Niners switched out of it and they all went out wide. They won't tight at all.
spk_0
Greg, if the Rams say, oh, we know what you're doing. We're going to keep we're going to stay light. Then they run the ball, right?
spk_0
Yeah, because the way the way they first got into the formation was it was used check and it was McCaprey and you could run lead play with McCaprey or the full back force and give it to use check.
spk_0
They tried that earlier, but by you could get a look at it. I think a tip they were in man. Then they just flexed out of it. They just all went out wide and you got that formation left from McCaprey and you've got land man outside and you got reader. So anyway, you know, how do they pull off the most improbable win?
spk_0
Probably the most improbable scenario is let Kyle cook and it's the it's the it's not just calling plays, Matt. It's designing offense. And he knows this Rams personnel in McVeigh. So good at it as well. But I got to say the fourth and one at the end.
spk_0
I don't know what he was thinking there just trying to sledgehammer that in there from a bit and they like their condensed formations. They like so the Niners everything and tie tie tie tie.
spk_0
But in that situation, Puka's the guy you want now you want to spread it out. Do what they did for the touchdown where you stack Puka behind Devante or a wall of blockers run a bubble or a tunnel or something and let them get out in space. Don't play to the Niners strength, which is the size.
spk_0
The length of that D line Fred Warner shooting a gap. Why was Chase Lucas on the field over J. You're wrong. I'm glad you brought his name up because on the podcast that Jennifer and I taped after the game.
spk_0
I did not mention his name but going back and rewatching that Chase Lucas made that play.
spk_0
Well, I don't know. He shot the C gap and he was told by De Amador, the nor will I was in there over J. I love Chase Lucas.
spk_0
But I last year when I was away from doing every year but I was healthy enough to do it. We have a player for purpose dinner and I am see the first hour. So there's a point where I can go sit in the in the audience and just sit at the table. I sat with Chase. Chase Lucas's table just to sit there because they don't think anybody knew Chase Lucas.
spk_0
The guy was incredible. So engaging. He'd lit up everybody who was telling stories. I know him from the lines. We all did. He was a great special team player and a nickel back. I thought they would use him more last year. I don't know if you ever got in the field the entire year last year.
spk_0
Never suited up for a game last year. I was surprised. I think they could have used them with the special teams meltdowns they had. They could have used Chase Lucas. But then in the preseason, how good was he?
spk_0
And then finally he got, you know, a chance to show what he can do from scrimmage and he made that play. I mean a lot of the big body guys did inside Fred took out Wittington on that play when Wittington came inside to insert. They loved to insert Pooca Wittington is a blocker.
spk_0
Wittington is a big guy. And then so but Fred kind of took him out and Lucas had the chance to shoot it along with the amateur. It was a fabulous game. There was Kekayle again Sean McVeigh going back and forth. It was Mac matching half a body, half a hand froze with Matthew Stafford all night. Stafford missed some them turning the ball over.
spk_0
You know the flip 90 pitch to Blake Corrie drops the ball and the punch out by Collins. But ultimately in my McVeigh was p owed after the game and said I caused my team the game not so much.
spk_0
I think in the game. From my perspective, you don't want to tie. But I think a tie last night was acceptable for the Niners. Let's just, it's just a mulligan. Let's just throw this game out.
spk_0
We don't have half of our team. We're not going to have Bosa. But we see in a few weeks at Levi's. We'll get Kittleback and we'll get our receivers. So I think I think we were more accepting of a tie was my mind where the Rams like we got a chance to put a pitchfork in them.
spk_0
We're not going to tie these guys. We're going to beat them especially at home. So I think they did the right thing by playing for the win. But they just didn't run the right play. It was surprised me. They ran that condensed formation.
spk_0
Yeah, yeah, I was going to say that or ask you that. So Rams, this is one they had to win, you know, just with with everything going against the 49ers. So that's why you think ordinarily they would have played for the time.
spk_0
No, and it no because I think if they kick the field goal there, the Niners have time to come back down the field.
spk_0
So another point was could Mac get up off the bench eating his banana and the physical therapy. They're rubbing his elbow. He's got ribs. He's got a calf. He's got to do Mac daddy ain't laying down. He's going back in that.
spk_0
He's going to go like drag his body back into the puddle. I mean, there were points where I thought certainly when they got down on the goal line and they wanted to kick in the short field goal.
spk_0
I think of Max healthy. You go to my thought about bringing Martina's into run zone read. Yeah, you want to mumble the snap. The guys never taken one of the NFL. Maybe that's too bold.
spk_0
But if the Rams kicked that field goal and tie the game and I understand what was it three and a half minutes ago.
spk_0
I mean, then and I think the Rams would have been well, both teams had called their time out. The Rams would have been without a time out. So four hours could have, you know, as long as they'd strung a first down or two together, they could have run that thing out.
spk_0
And who would have thought Eddie Pinero could make a did you know he could kick a 59 year ago? I'm Carlos's tight with them. Yeah, back and forth. And he knows he calls him Carlos and they're tight.
spk_0
Anyway, I didn't know who said 60 or I didn't open Europe and make a 59 year. I thought he was the equation now.
spk_0
I thought he would get a nosebleed if he went above 52 yards, but he was great. And that was the long or the second longest.
spk_0
Let me see if I got this right. I think it is second longest field goal in 49ers history. Can you believe I think Jake had that for a while.
spk_0
Jake was a 57. Yeah, he and he, where do they make his that wasn't it was the Super Bowl year early on at the Rams. That's so fine.
spk_0
Even how how's this one? 49ers legend Joey Sly is one of four.
spk_0
51. That's 50 56, but the longest was David acres at the 63. 63. Yeah, that was I believe that was right before the end of the half.
spk_0
Can't can't blame it all on the new cables and what they're doing. So anyway, yeah, Pinero. I didn't know he could make a 50. I would like to get more depth on the dynamic kickoff. He's kicking that ball too short.
spk_0
He's letting them catching it on the run of a 50 yard line. If he can make a 59 yard field goal into a path into a rush. Why can't he hit the dynamic kickoff. Maybe he needs to back up a little more.
spk_0
Maybe a little more in, but you can't kick it to the 15 yard line and give everybody a running start. He's got to get more depth on that.
spk_0
Did I hear you talking about Josh what parties dirty balls and how that's impacted his kicking. I love my. I love my dirty martinis.
spk_0
Yeah, the dirty ball. I used to the dirty ball. The definite. I don't know. I mean you kick the knuckleball. Right. I was talking to Jamie long about trajectory because the dirty kickoff.
spk_0
And I knew right away Skymore the first one of the game. It's almost like catastrophe. I don't even know.
spk_0
But then he missed the landing zone later and gave us the ball right right before the overtime anyway. Yeah, I wonder about you know because he kicks the dirty one with no spin. It's flat. It's a knuckle kick.
spk_0
But he also doesn't get it up high kicks it low. I thought is that throwoff his trajectory on some of his placements. JB Long didn't agree. He had one blocked in Tennessee. He had two blocked at the end of the Philadelphia game.
spk_0
By Jalen Carter and then Jordan Davis got one for the epic scoop and score. And then he had one, you know, Jordan Elliott got him on the on the field goal and the extra point. What are the Rams do?
spk_0
Do they so Jake Modi is on the Bears roster is not on their practice squad. Correct. I was thinking they go get Jake Modi.
spk_0
They do. Jake Modi is on the practice. Yeah. Well, they could get up there. Yeah, but they really want to.
spk_0
I know you have to run great, but I do want to talk about Alfred Collins that play. And just how this guy. I got to be honest with you.
spk_0
You know, through a little bit of training camp. I thought I got your text.
spk_0
Is this a Javan Ken Law kind of player where he's just too big. He can't sink those hips. He can't play with leverage. And he just got better and better and better.
spk_0
And that play he made. Holy cow. Holy cow. Harry Carey. Holy Toledo. I mean, it was amazing. And I agree with you. There were times.
spk_0
We didn't see him a lot. He got hurt, you know, and OTAs and where is he and Cap injury lingered for a while. And then, you know, he didn't look great.
spk_0
But then he's been playing better. But it's just the size. 6, 5, 3, 32. He's got an 85 inch wingspan. The arms of 35 inches his hands are 10 inches.
spk_0
And the way he did that punch. The Fred Warner is so good at it. But he was on the ground. He was diving to tackle the ball.
spk_0
And the dog Harry, the dog Harry Williams on the goal line to get it with such force and just boom. And the cover it. I mean, that was the part.
spk_0
The part of that play Greg was to get himself in position to make that punch out. The punch out was great. The punch out sealed the deal.
spk_0
But to get himself in position for that punch out. And then of course, the, you know, some luck involved the ball stayed right there. And he fell on it. But, but what he showed to get himself into that spot to me was super impressive.

Yeah. I mean, the punch was to have the force and to hit it. But you're right. The fact that you're in a goal line. So it wasn't like threads against Camara, which I hear Brown kind of held them up and like here, go and punch it out.

This was like, whoa. So now with Collega Davis and the injury he's got. I mean, Alfred Collins is going to swind up playing some more snaps. So just a huge play. There were so many plays in the game. I'm sure the Rams feel like if, if they make a couple of plays here and there they win the game and they do.
spk_0
And I think the Niners conversely. But I think if that play does not happen, the Rams probably win the football gamers take a huge step towards it.
spk_0
Okay, you, I know you got to run, but big picture, big picture. What does this game mean? What did that game mean Thursday night?
spk_0
Concord the West with division. I mean, they're four and one. They're three and 0 into division. They got three quality road wins. They get a little miniby. They're by is not going to be till later in the year.
spk_0
I think the NFC West is on. I mean, the Rams lost in Philly. I think there are four or no team going into the game last night. So I, whoever won last night was going to walk out of here in first place. We'll watch Seattle against Tampa Bay on Sunday. But the night has already beaten them. The Niners have inside pole position.
spk_0
They can draft now. They can pull away. We'll see. The schedule is going to be top a lot of road games. But it proved they can win this division without Brock Pertigate quarterback.
spk_0
When Brock's healthy, he'll come back. But you got to have a quality backup. We've learned that so much with this team, whether it was, you know, what Brock did, what Jimmy did for trade.
spk_0
You just got to have it. So they can win with Mac Jones in any any scenario against any defense against any offense. I was trying to visualize and I couldn't see it. How they could do it.
spk_0
It's Kyle Shanahan's brain and it's Mac daddy or big brain Brock. They are getting great quarterback play just running the offense boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. So with Mac Jones, you can win.
spk_0
And they won three. Can they have to win more? So to me, what this shows is that they can win with now. Let's just not go to the third quarterback.
spk_0
We haven't seen anything of him in the NFL, but with these two guys, how many guys have two quarterbacks you could win at the highest level? I mean, is Mac Jones? Who's the best backup quarterback in the NFL?
spk_0
Who's the best backup quarterback? I mean, based on based on his fit for the team, it's got to be Mac Jones.
spk_0
I'd have to go through every team for roster. I would say Jimmy is good. Jimmy is a good player. If the Rams had a play, Jimmy Garoppolo, they could win with Jimmy.
spk_0
Would your other have Jimmy Garoppolo or Mac Jones? We don't have him now. Okay. All right.
spk_0
Jimmy's doing our be ads. You see the RB ads for the way for Wow, which you're laying on the red Ferrari. I haven't seen it, but I will say this.
spk_0
The 40 hours can just sit home and do a lot of rehab and physical therapy this week. And meanwhile, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, they have their own injury problems.
spk_0
They're going to be really shorthanded going up to play Seattle. So I thought going into this two game stretch of the first.
spk_0
The 40 and I just could just split. They'd be in really good shape. Now now they need to get greedy.
spk_0
And they have a real chance to come out of these two games at the Rams at Tampa Bay with victories. Greg, thank you so much. Always a pleasure to see you.

Enjoy your weekend, brother. And we'll see you next week. Thank you. Thank you, Maddie. Love you.
