spk_0 Dallas Mavericks get a win in preseason.

spk_0 I'm not going to tell you the final score because it doesn't matter because you don't

spk_0 know some of the players that played for the Oklahoma City Thunder in this game.

spk_0 But Cooper flag made his NBA debut in preseason.

spk_0 And what we saw from Cooper flag was the type of star he's going to be.

spk_0 He's a connector.

spk_0 He's a player that can do a whole bunch of different things.

spk_0 We heard from so many different players and coaches in preseason and all that that

spk_0 Cooper flag can do everything out of basketball court.

spk_0 Like so many different players said that that exact thing.

spk_0 He can do everything out of basketball court.

spk_0 And that's what he can do.

spk_0 We saw three assists from him in this game.

spk_0 He only played in the first half.

spk_0 We saw three assists.

spk_0 We saw his vision.

spk_0 We saw him hit cutters.

spk_0 We saw him get a great dish to Derek Lively when he was double teamed under the rim.

spk_0 We saw two threes from him.

spk_0 It were there pull up threes.

spk_0 One of them was a great screen from Anthony Davis.

spk_0 One of them the defender just sagged off of him and he hit a pull up three.

spk_0 And so we saw him get his own shot in that way.

spk_0 We saw him take take the ball coast to coast and have a great finish there.

spk_0 We saw him get to the free throw line because he's big and he can get fouled.

spk_0 We saw him get some rebound.

spk_0 So I'm going to huge, you know, chase down block off the backboard.

spk_0 We saw everything from Cooper flag what he's going to be.

spk_0 But did we need to see more from him?

spk_0 He didn't really go create his own shot.

spk_0 He was playing at the Thunder's like third string play, like third string guys.

spk_0 Camille, if you're going to see the number one pick like that and play against that amount of talent,

spk_0 do you need to see more from him?

spk_0 Not necessarily if what you're also giving me fills the stat sheet, right?

spk_0 Like if this was a game where Cooper flag came out and he had, you know, 30 points in the first half,

spk_0 it would make a lot of headlines because it's like, man, the shot making skill that was put on in this first half is worthy of the headlines.

spk_0 But when you look at a stat line where your guy can give you 10 points, six rebounds, three assists and a block in a half of their first NBA career,

spk_0 like is it something that's like out of worldly like no, but it's super solid.

spk_0 It's super solid.

spk_0 And I love the fact that the scoring from Cooper flag in this game all came in like the final five and a half minutes

spk_0 of that second quarter like that's when you really got himself going after looking for teammates after playing defense after assisting doing all the other little things from Cooper flag.

spk_0 Like that's what set out to me and the one assistant particular with case and Wallace on a light full court defending him.

spk_0 Flag gets to like the high pose and he finds following the dunker for an easy dunking the vision from now.

spk_0 She's kind of like man Cooper Cooper can be kind of fun, especially for a maps team that has some playmaking concerns.

spk_0 They do have those concerns, but he's helping fill them and the angel Russell's helping fill them to he had five assists and he had some good no look passes in transition.

spk_0 So he helped a lot.

spk_0 We talked about that on lockdown maps tonight, but with Cooper flag.

spk_0 I don't think I needed to see more that he gave he gives the team exactly what they need in that moment.

spk_0 And I think that's the key with what makes Cooper flag a star and what's going to make him a star in the NBA as well is that he knows what to give a team and he can give it to him already.

spk_0 And he's 18.

spk_0 Like yeah, they needed some passing.

spk_0 They need some playmaking.

spk_0 Okay, boom, got it.

spk_0 At the end of that second quarter, they're like, all right, Cooper go like you go do this.

spk_0 There was a there was a play that stuck out to me where he had case and Wallace on him.

spk_0 He was backing him down on the left wing and Cooper flag like,

spk_0 there was case and Wallace has like position on him.

spk_0 So he's kind of like pushing up on him.

spk_0 So it's really hard for him to back him down.

spk_0 And so he's like, all right, I'm going to pass out of this and reset and try to do something else or try to get the ball to somebody else with a better advantage.

spk_0 Anthony Davis gets the ball from Cooper flag and he looks back at Cooper flag and he goes, no.

spk_0 You take this, you have the mismatch on case and Wallace will pass it back to him.

spk_0 And then they do it again.

spk_0 And then Anthony Davis tries to force the ball back to back to Cooper flag and then case and Wallace smacks it away.

spk_0 It goes out of bounds.

spk_0 But just that moment of like, all right, now you get your now you get your own.

spk_0 You've given us everything that we've needed in these moments.

spk_0 Rough by like 20 or whatever gets this team.

spk_0 And so now you go get yours.

spk_0 And that's when he went on that little run in that in that that sequence right there.

spk_0 And so I just think that we saw like Cooper flag on full.

spk_0 The split basically.

spk_0 And to that point, you're seeing his teammates also be like, Hey, go do you with him being a young rookie on a team with some vets in the Mavericks team at that where

spk_0 I know some of the outside conversation around the team isn't like championship championship, but it's a group in Dallas that feel like they can compete this year.

spk_0 So to see vets on that team, concealing somewhat to the rookie.

spk_0 I think that says a lot to of how his teammates view him, which

spk_0 that goes a long way because earning your teammates respect on the court.

spk_0 That can be difficult to do, especially as a rookie coming in first round draft pick is a lot of hype around you,

spk_0 but he seems to have the respect of his peers and that should go a long way, especially having that established already.

spk_0 Clay Thompson after the first day of training camp said of Cooper flag.

spk_0 He said he's he earned my respect.

spk_0 He didn't sit out of one drill the whole the whole the whole day, which I'm like, first of all, I didn't think that that was an option like the

spk_0 right line.

spk_0 People said you could sit out of drill, but the play that we're going to bring that up.

spk_0 Then maybe it may be it isn't option, but also with Clay Thompson, he, like he, you know, he got Cooper.

spk_0 He's got Cooper flags respect.

spk_0 And I actually think that it's going to be interesting to see how this team operates.

spk_0 They're starting lineup clay.

spk_0 Clay was in starting lineup.

spk_0 D'Angelo Russell's in starting lineup.

spk_0 Cooper flag, Anthony Davis, Derek Lively, ended up starting and Clay Thompson said at training camp.

spk_0 He said that there's no reason why this team can't win a championship.

spk_0 See, which is kind of wild to me.

spk_0 Gotta have that belief.

spk_0 Like if you heard an NBA player in training camp, especially the most optimistic time of the year, being like, you know what?

spk_0 We ain't even wrote the ball yet, but they ain't even no point because I know where we're going to be.

spk_0 Come April at home.

spk_0 But you don't want to hear that.

spk_0 Like he said, what he's supposed to say.

spk_0 True.

spk_0 Also, he's living in, he's living in a different universe right now.

spk_0 I mean, just I'm not going to bring it up because he doesn't want to talk about it.

spk_0 So I won't, I won't bring it up, but he had a good summer.

spk_0 I'll just say he had a good summer.

spk_0 And maybe a new song made about him.

spk_0 The bucks did not have the best.

spk_0 You have to shade me to get to the next topic.

spk_0 But we go.

spk_0 That was my transition sentence.

spk_0 That's how I got from one point to another.

spk_0 The bucks win though 103 to 93 against the Miami Heat.

spk_0 Let's hear from our guy West Goldberg on the heat side of things for this one.

spk_0 Miami Heat dropped to 0 into in the preseason.

spk_0 But who cares about preseason records?

spk_0 Nobody knows about record norm.

spk_0 How the heat newcomer who's going to help unlock

spk_0 some of the things that the heat want to do this season.

spk_0 The heat during training camp and preseason have been talking about playing faster,

spk_0 playing with pace up tempo.

spk_0 We're going to lean into the youth and athleticism of this roster in the post Jimmy Butler era.

spk_0 And a big part of that is Norm Powell who came over and trade this summer.

spk_0 And after a quiet first preseason game for Powell,

spk_0 he erupted in the second quarter of his second preseason game as a member of the heat.

spk_0 He finishes with 18 points on six of 12 shooting three of six from three point range.

spk_0 And what really stood out about Powell was just how quick he is to get into a shot motion.

spk_0 He gets his feet set.

spk_0 He's got that quick high release.

spk_0 He's taking three years early in the shot clock.

spk_0 And for a heat team that wants to play more up tempo,

spk_0 he's going to be a big part of them doing that.

spk_0 He figures to be part of the starting lineup.

spk_0 Even when Tyler Hero comes back from his offseason surgery.

spk_0 And if he's playing like that, he could be a big help for a heat offense.

spk_0 That needs a lot of help.

spk_0 Are you buying this Norm Powell on the heat?

spk_0 Let me just start by saying this.

spk_0 OK, to Wes, to all of the Miami heat fans out there,

spk_0 do not make sweeping conclusions on what Norm Powell is going to be when he's playing

spk_0 the Milwaukee Bucks.

spk_0 Why?

spk_0 Because Norm Powell is a Milwaukee Buc killer.

spk_0 It does not matter what uniform Norm Powell is in when he's playing them a walkie

spk_0 Bucks. He's going to go off preseason or not.

spk_0 He's going to go off tonight was another example of that.

spk_0 But no, seriously, he is a Buc killer.

spk_0 I want that to be on the record.

spk_0 Norm Powell plays the Bucks look out for those stats.

spk_0 But I think he is going to be good for Miami overall jokes aside.

spk_0 He is going to be important to them.

spk_0 And Miami's one of those teams where the player that actually

spk_0 spelled to me in this game was a Yovic where it's like, OK,

spk_0 you got your contract here, you know, you get in the start here.

spk_0 No turnovers for him into night's game, eight rebounds, seven assists, nine points,

spk_0 just a really steady game from him on the Miami heat side.

spk_0 And for the Bucks, no, Yannis, Miles Turner debut though.

spk_0 The big thing for the Bucks was seeing what the starting lineup was going to look

spk_0 like because we've had questions on who's the starting five from Milwaukee is going to be

spk_0 with Kevin Porter Jr. AJ Green, Gary Trent Jr. Kyle Kusma, Miles Turner tonight.

spk_0 You would assume Yannis has taken that Kyle Kusma spot and you're going with the smaller

spk_0 guards to start, but we'll have to see how they continue to shake out over the preseason.

spk_0 That AJ Green starts over Kyle Kusma.

spk_0 That has been what I've been saying all summer.

spk_0 Do it. Do not start Kyle Kusma.

spk_0 Go small, go AJ Green, Kyle or Kevin Porter Jr. Gary Trent Jr.

spk_0 with the front court of Yannis and Turner.

spk_0 I think that's the way to go.

spk_0 That's Kyle Kusma.

spk_0 Know that you've been saying that?

spk_0 Know that that is a possibility.

spk_0 I mean, he's been he's been kind of quiet about what his role is.

spk_0 What's up with Jackson, Gatlin, host of locked on rockets and look, the win is great.

spk_0 But what do we learn about this rocket team?

spk_0 First and foremost, learn that out one more stop.

spk_0 He's the only one that liked the outcome of the game.

spk_0 See, play that I thought that it was worth a while.

spk_0 I just want to say.

spk_0 Richard Goen is very much carrying over that same effectiveness that he had during a Euro basket.

spk_0 He was sensational in this game.

spk_0 Easily the best player on the floor.

spk_0 It didn't even play the second half.

spk_0 But he had 19 points, five rebounds, six assists on five of seven shooting.

spk_0 He was two of two from downtown in a perfect seven of seven at the free throw line.

spk_0 And looked great.

spk_0 The offense ran through him quite a bit while he was on the floor.

spk_0 The downside for the rockets is the offense when Alper and Shingun wasn't on the floor looked highly suspect.

spk_0 They're going to need a lot more out of Oman Thompson and Reed Shepherd,

spk_0 especially when Alper and Shingun is on the bench.

spk_0 Now the benefit is they do have Kevin Durant waiting in the wings.

spk_0 He wasn't available or active in this first preseason game.

spk_0 And the expectation is probably that you're going to stagger both Kevin Durant Alper and Shingun's minutes

spk_0 throughout this season as much as possible so that you don't have that distinct drop off offensively.

spk_0 I'm going to cut him off there.

spk_0 But that's that's one of the things it's a big question is can they get enough offensively?

spk_0 Can Katie solve this problem of when Shingun sits?

spk_0 They just fall off a cliff because he was plus 18 in this game.

spk_0 And you look at like some of their, I mean, he was plus 18 like he's looking at that like big positive.

spk_0 And then when he sits like Jackson said,

spk_0 I'm at Thompson Reed Shepherd didn't give him enough.

spk_0 And that was going to be the thing even when Fred Van Fleet was healthy.

spk_0 It's like, Hey, can we start to advance

spk_0 Oman's game and Reed Shepherd's game as primary point guards.

spk_0 Can we just get them some more touches with the ball in their hand?

spk_0 Like there's no Jalen Green.

spk_0 There's going to be more opportunity here.

spk_0 And the Fred Van Fleet injury now made it a necessity.

spk_0 So the question of like, where is the playmaking going to come from?

spk_0 There's going to be learning pains.

spk_0 I think with Thompson and Shepherd with the ball in their hands a little bit more often.

spk_0 But the thing for the rockets is like they don't have a lot of time to really be playing around

spk_0 and wasting games here.

spk_0 So it is going to be a heavy load.

spk_0 I think on Katie on San Gounen.

spk_0 Is it going to be enough at the beginning of the year?

spk_0 It might not be.

spk_0 And if that's the case, come December when some guys are able to be traded and whatnot.

spk_0 Like I think that's when the rockets really evaluate that roster.

spk_0 Given that Van Fleet's going to be out for most of not all of this season.

spk_0 Yeah, this is a weird team that is like young and also win now right now.

spk_0 Because they made this choice to go get Kevin Durant.

spk_0 Got Shengounen in his prime right now.

spk_0 And so yeah, like I don't think that's going to be enough offense for them to win at the highest level.

spk_0 They'll win games though.

spk_0 Like it depends on what level of question you're asking for this rocket team.

spk_0 Can you win the finals with these two guys as a really big playmakers for your team?

spk_0 No, absolutely not.

spk_0 Right? Like I just can't see a world where the habits.

spk_0 Can you?

spk_0 No, it's not traditional.

spk_0 You never really have seen something like that before.

spk_0 So I mean, until I see it, I'm going to have to go into no camp.

spk_0 And one more thing about the rockets that's interesting with them playing the double bigs

spk_0 and just being a big team.

spk_0 If their offense isn't clicking, I think that that's going to be a team that can be gotten

spk_0 in transition and those really jumble lineups just going to take a while for guys to kind of get back on

spk_0 defense and those lineups.

spk_0 So something to think about like the rockets have been a team that have used defense to create offense.

spk_0 And I wonder if a lot of teams this year are going to try to create their offense off of

spk_0 miss shots from the rockets and just kind of use it the fuel their game.

spk_0 The Mavericks are going to try to get their off.

spk_0 Shots and rebounds.

spk_0 That's going to be the thing that they're going to do and pushing the ball transition.

spk_0 Yeah. Jackson also talked about the double bigs and that's something that we're definitely going to watch

spk_0 because they didn't do that in the regular season much at all last year,

spk_0 but they are going to commit to it this year with, you know, investing in Cucupello

spk_0 and still having Stephen Adams, obviously still having Shingun.

spk_0 And then even like Katie's another seven footer, like they're going to have three seven footers sometimes out

spk_0 out there at certain points.

spk_0 That's going to be a lot of length, but that's something to definitely watch with this team.

spk_0 It is. It is.

spk_0 And even today they had a real big lineup where they had I'm in out there with Taris and then three bigs.

spk_0 And it's like God Houston can be huge.

spk_0 Yeah.

spk_0 The the short business pretty big team too.

spk_0 They get a win against the against Memphis Grizzlies.

spk_0 Let's see if Cucu Hill cares about the win.

spk_0 For the short business to open up their first preseason game against the mentors Grizzlies,

spk_0 they get the win, but that's not really what matters here.

spk_0 Preseason who cares about losing the only matters how the team and how specific moments about the game look.

spk_0 And the beginning of the game in the first quarter, the pistons were getting destroyed.

spk_0 They were getting obliterated.

spk_0 They look sloppy.

spk_0 Rusty preseason.

spk_0 So what is what it is?

spk_0 But then in the second quarter, you saw exactly what their identity is supposed to be and will be this season.

spk_0 JP Bigger staff talked about all training camp.

spk_0 This team is going to be an explosive offense through their defense.

spk_0 And in that second quarter, the pistons forced nine turnovers, had multiple steals, had multiple blocks.

spk_0 Their defense turned up and they turned those nine turnovers and their defense into 50 point scored in the second quarter,

spk_0 50 point scored.

spk_0 Asar Thompson, Ron Holland, Isaiah Stewart, all turned up.

spk_0 The pistons show what their identity is.

spk_0 That's the biggest takeaway from this game.

spk_0 Can the pistons carry that identity into the regular season, Camille?

spk_0 Yeah, if they stay healthy, I think they absolutely can.

spk_0 Koo and I and Justin did a Bucks pistons crossover during the off season and talked about the defensive

spk_0 ceilings for both teams.

spk_0 And when you look at what the pistons can throw out there if they're healthy, they could be really dangerous to what some of those young guys,

spk_0 especially if someone like Ron Holland takes another step in the addition to what you're seeing from Kate,

spk_0 Cunningham, controlling the game offensively, Jayden, I've come in back.

spk_0 What they got would would be stew, like they just have some pieces there.

spk_0 That could be a really, really treacherous defense.

spk_0 People say we don't have good nicknames in the NBA.

spk_0 You can just throw out the beast doing it.

spk_0 So casual.

spk_0 Yeah, very bad.

spk_0 My guy, Oh, Max committed for the turnovers in that second quarter.

spk_0 And so I don't know which Grizzlies we saw in this game that I'm really like,

spk_0 all right, they're going to be a big part of the rotation.

spk_0 I guess we saw Jayla Wells, Aldama, Davies, called a pulp, Tijeroam, some Scottie, Pippin, Jr.

spk_0 Look, man, I don't know.

spk_0 They're just missing so many guys.

spk_0 We're going to talk about the, we're going to talk about the Grizzlies a little bit later.

spk_0 Let's hear from Joe Molinax on the Grizzly side of things.

spk_0 Lost their preseason debut at the hands of the Detroit pistons.

spk_0 The outcome of the game is irrelevant though.

spk_0 There you go.

spk_0 Who actually showed what they can and maybe can't do on the court for Memphis in this one.

spk_0 I'm Joe Molinax of Lockdown Grizzlies and no John Marant, no Jaron Jackson Jr.

spk_0 No Zach Edie, arguably the three best players on the Grizzlies did not suit up.

spk_0 Preseason opener against the Denver Nuggets again.

spk_0 It was very close up until things got garbage.

spk_0 Timey late and he had the deep bench dudes close out the action out in Vancouver, British Columbia.

spk_0 Two real takeaways here for the Raptors.

spk_0 Brandon Ingram number one.

spk_0 He was quite good.

spk_0 19.6 of 12 shooting.

spk_0 Six of seven from the line.

spk_0 Very efficient and you know, just kind of did the thing you'd expect Brandon Ingram to do.

spk_0 And then he's going to have to do for this team, which is get easy buckets when things kind of break down in the half court.

spk_0 This has not been a good offensive team over the last couple seasons.

spk_0 They've not had great shot making or finishing and Brandon Ingram does all those things very, very well.

spk_0 And for a night that was a little awkward for the starters.

spk_0 No yaka pertelezi was out with a sore back.

spk_0 Scotty Barnes had a bit of a rough go of things.

spk_0 A manual quickly still trying to find his place.

spk_0 Brandon Ingram was clearly the best guy in a starting five.

spk_0 Although we did have some nice chemistry with RJ Barrett as well, which was kind of a sticking point.

spk_0 And a bit of an area of concern coming into the year.

spk_0 Those guys can gel together with one another.

spk_0 That's a big deal for the perspective starting fire for this team.

spk_0 And the second thing is turnovers.

spk_0 This team is going to pride itself on being a total pain at the point of attack.

spk_0 They forced 16 turnovers in the first half of this game.

spk_0 And they were up in Denver's business all night long running off of those turnovers.

spk_0 What do you do if you can't score the half court?

spk_0 Well, it gets deals and throw down dunks.

spk_0 So the rappers did quite a bit tonight.

spk_0 And I think we'll see a lot of that.

spk_0 It is very much the identity they're shooting for on the defensive end.

spk_0 The nuggets are trying to figure out what their identity is.

spk_0 And so I think so they have maybe found something here in their their win tonight against the Raptors.

spk_0 Invernuggets get a win versus the Toronto Raptors in preseason game number two and boy oh boy.

spk_0 Was it sloppy?

spk_0 31 turnovers, but ended up not matter in the Denver Nuggets daughters dominate.

spk_0 Cam Jocelyn, maybe the acquisition of the summer plus 23 looks good, plays good defense.

spk_0 The Nuggets are kind of fun to find out their identity.

spk_0 Who are we going to be now with all these new players, all these veterans trying to find the right staggered lineups all of it.

spk_0 But the nuggets look like they are moving towards the goal of becoming a better team each and every day.

spk_0 But shout out to the Toronto Raptors as well.

spk_0 They played extremely hard, very physical, 94 feet defense that gave the Denver Nuggets a lot of problem.

spk_0 But look, we got more to come.

spk_0 But hey, great game tonight.

spk_0 The NBA is right around the corner.

spk_0 This is swiper and this is locked on nuggets.

spk_0 No, it's not. It's locked on NBA.

spk_0 They played the the Gaujo long lions with two O's in the middle of long, which really threw me off all day today.

spk_0 Obviously playing a team, not an NBA team, but Victor Roman Yama, nine points, 10 boards, seven assists.

spk_0 Any place just 16 minutes hits all of his shots in this one.

spk_0 But my question is more about the long lions because

spk_0 When Frank Kamitsky was the college player of the year, all that in college basketball for the Wisconsin Badgers, who I've heard that you love.

spk_0 He was in his second season in the NBA after being the number two pick two seasons ago in 2013.

spk_0 What if I told you 10 years ago that these two guys would be playing for a team, not in the NBA, playing in the preseason against this purse?

spk_0 Like there are other guys still in this draft class playing right like, oh, yeah, 2015.

spk_0 I would have been shot completely shocked and especially only deep.
