spk_0 Fascinating gadgets, gizmos, and gear-based technology.
spk_0 Welcome to F-Triple G-BT.
spk_0 Now this is the show that takes your favorite fictional science and technology and we make
spk_0 it a reality.
spk_0 We are the brain trust, I and the dungeon master, Daniel J. Glenn.
spk_0 With me, the wise and wizard doctor, Michael Dennett.
spk_0 Great to be here, Dan, and I love how in this episode we visit my love of Greek mythology
spk_0 and how it comes alive in dungeons and dragons.
spk_0 Very exciting to bring those two together.
spk_0 A lot of things are going to come alive in this episode, Dan, and not to do any spoilers
spk_0 here.
spk_0 But we are still in our forest episode and of course we got to go to our dynamic druid,
spk_0 Ben Seepsur, Ben.
spk_0 How are you living in the forest right now?
spk_0 Well, in harmony, Dan.
spk_0 I'm living with a lot of forests.
spk_0 And there's lots of different creatures in here and I'm excited that we're talking about
spk_0 another one today.
spk_0 It's true, we are going to talk about the Dryad and this is one of these weird creatures
spk_0 that I'm not sure many people know about but let's toss a picture up on the screen here.
spk_0 Dryad, there's a couple of different definitions.
spk_0 Some people may know, some people may not, but they're basically a forest creature, a
spk_0 face spirit as some people in the fantasy world know them.
spk_0 But they're basically a physical manifestation of an old oak tree's life spirit.
spk_0 They live in an oak tree and within the oak tree, it's kind of this cool thing.
spk_0 I'm sure they know a lot about acorns, am I right, Dan?
spk_0 I'm sure they do.
spk_0 Other tales tell that these are spirits that have been connected to a tree as punishment.
spk_0 And we will see just the limitations of their attachment here.
spk_0 But I don't know, I can't really tell if these are real definitions here, guys, or if
spk_0 these are mystical definitions.
spk_0 What do you think of a Dryad, Dan?
spk_0 Well, I actually think of, I kind of like the first versionish, you know, a spirit
spk_0 of a tree that is corpriol and can take on physical form.
spk_0 You know, the heart of the tree, the great bonding to the tree, I mean, a tree is alive
spk_0 after all.
spk_0 And maybe it has this deeper connection, particularly oak trees in their majesty and their age.
spk_0 So I like that spiritual element to it.
spk_0 That's where I'm leaning, particularly as we start talking about their other powers,
spk_0 because at the end of the day, spiritual beings and quantum wave and in this go well together.
spk_0 And we're going to get some quantum waviness later for those of you who are looking forward
spk_0 to that.
spk_0 I can't wait to learn about that.
spk_0 I got to go to our druid here, because you are, you know, you're the master of the forest
spk_0 and all the creatures that dwell within it, Ben.
spk_0 So what do you think about the Dryad?
spk_0 You know, well, I think of two things.
spk_0 I think of the giant oak trees in my home that I grew up in, where, you know, every year,
spk_0 you know, these were like, these must have been five, six story tall oak trees.
spk_0 You know, our driveway would be covered with acorns every fall, summer.
spk_0 I don't know.
spk_0 Some like that.
spk_0 It was pretty good enough.
spk_0 Whenever they did that, probably the fall.
spk_0 But I also, you know, I'm reminded of just, you know, I see Dryad's kind of also a little
spk_0 like trickstery.
spk_0 Like it kind of feels like, you know, you're going through the woods and, you know, they're
spk_0 kind of like the little creatures, you know, they're kind of like the imps of the forest.
spk_0 They're laughing at you.
spk_0 They're playing games with you.
spk_0 And you got to, you know, you got to be a little careful because they might trap you there
spk_0 in the forest.
spk_0 Right.
spk_0 It's a little, a little less misch ify.
spk_0 As we're going to learn later on, but I am glad I do have to say though, Dan, I know
spk_0 before you go on that, I don't know what it says about my mind at the moment that I could
spk_0 have sworn Ben was describing his druid home, not as actual trial to the home.
spk_0 Maybe it was both naturalistic.
spk_0 I am glad Ben that you mentioned acorns, but you have to be very careful doing that in front
spk_0 of Danny.
spk_0 You have to do it correctly.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 Or, or turns into a triant and it will squash you like an orc.
spk_0 But I do like the idea of dry ads attaching themselves to an oak tree.
spk_0 And in some ways, here's what I love about this guy is that in some ways, this might be
spk_0 one of the truest forms of commensalism that we see in the fantasy world, right?
spk_0 The dry ad attaches itself to the tree and it benefits.
spk_0 But there's really no harm or good done to the to the tree itself.
spk_0 And these are all oak trees.
spk_0 I believe that yeah, they're all oak trees.
spk_0 So there's no harm done to the oak tree, but there's no good done to it either.
spk_0 And this, I don't know, maybe I'm wrong here, but I don't, I think this might be one of
spk_0 the purest forms of this.
spk_0 But you know, I can see that down.
spk_0 I feel like there is some good to the tree.
spk_0 I mean, having a dry ad around probably helps protect you a little bit.
spk_0 You know, there's some protection there.
spk_0 This is where I want to bring in my quantum waviness though, right?
spk_0 I think this is an amazing example of sort of wave function integration between two creatures,
spk_0 right?
spk_0 You know, we think of this only on the microscopic level usually of particles that become completely
spk_0 entangled and in the same quantum state together and are perfectly aligned.
spk_0 I feel like this is a cool macroscopic example of this quantum entanglement and two things
spk_0 being together in a tight way that only magic makes possible because of its special properties
spk_0 in the field.
spk_0 So I love bringing in the natural commensalism that you did.
spk_0 But I think there's some deeper physics here that will be running thread through this
spk_0 whole discussion.
spk_0 Okay.
spk_0 I think there's a benefit to that.
spk_0 I think there is a strong connection here and maybe it goes all the way down to the quantum
spk_0 state because, you know, I mean, even a dry ad physical appearance matches that of the
spk_0 tree.
spk_0 You know, when it's fall, their hair turns red and yellow and all that stuff.
spk_0 When it's wintertime, their skin is white, their hair is white.
spk_0 So there is a connection here.
spk_0 And I'm wondering, Bennett, if you have that same connection when the fall happens, is
spk_0 your hair change color in any way?
spk_0 Well, I'm always, I was going to say, Falk.
spk_0 I mean, my hair is barely brown.
spk_0 You know, it's still, it's arguably black.
spk_0 So I think I'm always in my fall mode.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 You know, unlike where I live, which is always summer.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 Something's wrong, something's wrong there.
spk_0 But I think also with the engineering aspect, you know, I like that this is a creature that
spk_0 essentially makes its home in in an oak tree.
spk_0 And, you know, oak trees are the big, the big powerhouses, I guess, of the forest.
spk_0 You know, these are large trees.
spk_0 And just from a practicality standpoint, you know, they're picking the right tree.
spk_0 You know, whether they're, you know, intertwining their spirits and like, they don't really need
spk_0 a home, you know, because they're, you know, they like, phase into the tree or whether they
spk_0 literally are a corporeal creature that needs to live in a space.
spk_0 You know, the oak trees are a great place to put it because you could, you know, they're
spk_0 space in that tree band.
spk_0 I can't tell if you're working real estate in the forest there because you're really,
spk_0 you're really hard to sell in that oak tree.
spk_0 This is a great fixer upper.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 I want to live in an oak tree.
spk_0 And by the end of that little spiel, I mean, what am I doing?
spk_0 I'm losing money not.
spk_0 We're living in one.
spk_0 It's kind of, it's about this quantum waviness that you mentioned, Denon.
spk_0 Is that a couple of things here?
spk_0 You can't, well, if you can't, if you're a dry, but dry ads cannot live, they can't live
spk_0 and exist more than a thousand feet or so from their tree.
spk_0 And if that tree dies, they die.
spk_0 And that area has a specific name.
spk_0 It's called the, the terrell or the terrell.
spk_0 I don't quite know how to speak dry adpen.
spk_0 You can help me out on this.
spk_0 And if they leave that terrell, the terrell, then the glimmer, the, the, the glirigmer kicks
spk_0 in, which is the slow fading of their life, the wasting away of their soul.
spk_0 And you know, they can live supported by magic, but unsupported by magic, they'll die
spk_0 within hours of leaving their terrell, the terrell, the, so this, I think, really speaks
spk_0 what you're talking about here, Denon.
spk_0 Is there very existence depends on being close to that oak tree?
spk_0 Well, I think so.
spk_0 I think this is just the growing evidence for my, you know, macroscopic quantum view of
spk_0 the, the dry ad here.
spk_0 And though, as I said, most quantum effects are microscopic.
spk_0 We do have some examples like superfluids and superconductors in the physical world,
spk_0 where the quantum state becomes macroscopic and exists at a scale that we can see and
spk_0 interact with.
spk_0 And so it's not too surprising that this could happen for the dry ad and the oak tree.
spk_0 And a lot of this behavior is just totally reminiscent of what happens to wave functions.
spk_0 If you think of the wave function for a particle that's in some sort of protective
spk_0 well, it decays exponentially away from the well.
spk_0 So the tree is the protective well and the wave function decay and exponentially just
spk_0 means if the dry ad tries to be there, there's less of it, right?
spk_0 And it becomes insubstantial.
spk_0 So it's all very consistent.
spk_0 And so this is why I love this kind of quantum spirit, not quite physically,
spk_0 but it's a totally, corporal view of the dry ad.
spk_0 It's very intriguing to me as a physicist.
spk_0 Though, I want to get in line to buy some of Ben's tree property.
spk_0 Tree property here because that seems like a really good investment.
spk_0 You can't own the forest.
spk_0 You have to make a mutualistic agreement with the forest for it to bring you in, adopt
spk_0 you.
spk_0 That's one of its own.
spk_0 Exactly.
spk_0 But I think, Denon, maybe they're, I'm thinking a little more conventional here, not quantum,
spk_0 maybe a little more electromagnetic.
spk_0 I'm kind of thinking this is a, this is kind of like Wi-Fi.
spk_0 The dry ad can only get so far from its tree before it loses the signal.
spk_0 And maybe it's a mix of Wi-Fi, connecting their spirits together and some wireless charging.
spk_0 It gets too far away.
spk_0 It's not getting the energy transfer anymore.
spk_0 It doesn't have access to its tree cloud database.
spk_0 So it starts losing its life force in that way.
spk_0 So I think this is kind of more of a conventional thing where the dry ad is kind of wirelessly connected
spk_0 to the tree and electromagnetic waves fall over distance.
spk_0 And so it can't get that far away from its home.
spk_0 I love that, Ben.
spk_0 And what I really, really appreciate is it's clear that you're slowly overcoming your fear
spk_0 of antenna because you were the one who brought up antenna as an idea on this episode and
spk_0 not me.
spk_0 So I like to see growth.
spk_0 I'm always happy when my partners in this show experienced personal growth in various
spk_0 ways.
spk_0 Well, especially when you deal with, with forest stuff, you always want to see growth,
spk_0 you know?
spk_0 And I'm stunned, Ben, that you didn't take the opportunity to mention the wood wide
spk_0 web that they must be connected to.
spk_0
spk_0 They're electromagnetic connection to the oak tree.
spk_0 Well, I mean, if I were to use access, that is a problem.
spk_0 Well, if they were using the wood wide web, they could go anywhere.
spk_0 So clearly, you know, it's a local web that drives the dry ad.
spk_0 You know, only have, you know, local access to their tree.
spk_0 And that's, that's like their hotspot to get into the wood wide web.
spk_0 So they have to stay close to their access point.
spk_0 You know, they can't just, you know, use any, you know, they only have the password for
spk_0 their, their own Wi-Fi, you know, that, you know, no trees are, no dry ads are sharing
spk_0 their Wi-Fi passwords.
spk_0 Definitely not.
spk_0 You don't.
spk_0 And I will say, congratulations on pulling that metaphor to the absolute extent.
spk_0 The root system of that metaphor went deeper to the forest for sure.
spk_0 But this connection, I think, is very important because it tells everything that the dry ad
spk_0 does.
spk_0 So for example, you know, the dry ad has connection to the plants and it can speak to
spk_0 the plants around them and they can get them to do things.
spk_0 It can trip people, tie them up, you know, and even some of the, the plants can act as
spk_0 spies.
spk_0 I don't exactly know how that works, but I'm just reading what the literature told me
spk_0 here.
spk_0 But this is, I think, kind of interesting.
spk_0 We mentioned with trance in our previous episode about fast moving plants, but I'm wondering,
spk_0 guys, when we're not talking about locomotion, where an actual plant is moving around and
spk_0 uprooting, we're just talking about, you know, vines whipping around things like that.
spk_0 How fast can plants move?
spk_0 Because tripping a human being, you know, I guess they're a lumbering barbarian, it's
spk_0 a little bit easier.
spk_0 But if it's a quick and nimble gnome or an elf, you're going to have a problem.
spk_0 Those vines got a whip around really quick here.
spk_0 Mm-hmm.
spk_0 Well, one nice thing is physics helps you a little bit here, Dan.
spk_0 I'm going to just start with that.
spk_0 You know, if I think of a vine whipping and moving, I'm probably going to be moving water.
spk_0 Okay.
spk_0 And just like cracking a whip, I don't have to move the whole vine, right?
spk_0 I make the snapping motion, say at the handle of the vine, and the vine does the whipping
spk_0 for me, right?
spk_0 So as someone who loves the physics of whips and the, you know, sonic boom, you get at
spk_0 the end of the whip because it actually breaks the sound barrier.
spk_0 But you're not breaking the sound barrier with your hand, right?
spk_0 You're just moving the end of the whip.
spk_0 So I think there's a basic physics leverage thing going on for most of this.
spk_0 But there may be more engineering and water going on, Ben, that allows other types of fast
spk_0 motions.
spk_0 But I think your core basic motion is the physics of a whip.
spk_0 Well, I think the trick also is the storing of potential energy for a rapid kinetic motion.
spk_0 You know, okay.
spk_0 You know, we talked previously about like the exploding cucumbers and, you know, peach
spk_0 woks in return of the Jedi, where, you know, you just have, you know, you just, you know,
spk_0 the vine grows horizontally and then just gets dropped at the right moment to trip, trip
spk_0 up these lumbering barbarians through the forest.
spk_0 Sure.
spk_0 You know, you have a good supply of vines that you've, you know, pre-raised, pre-loaded,
spk_0 pre-loaded for tripping power.
spk_0 You know, it only takes a little bit of motion to set off that big motion.
spk_0 That is true.
spk_0 And I will say one of the other interesting things about the, you know, you mentioned the,
spk_0 the exploding cucumber.
spk_0 The dynamite tree is also one of the these powerhouses that just kind of explodes.
spk_0 You know, so there is a lot of, there's a lot of what I would call fast twitch in the
spk_0 animal and the plant kingdom.
spk_0 And I think these kind of are part of that.
spk_0 And you mentioned pea pot tendrils.
spk_0 They grow really quickly.
spk_0 Um, cunts who bamboo grows really fast, you know, bamboo grows at three feet a day, I
spk_0 think.
spk_0 That's not quite fast enough to trip someone.
spk_0 But just since we're talking about fast growing plants, that's unbelievable.
spk_0 Three feet a day.
spk_0 That's a year.
spk_0 Oh, yeah.
spk_0 And a hundred days to the length of a football field, American football field, of course.
spk_0 Well, I will tell you, Dad, recently being in Hawaii on a coffee tour where they talked
spk_0 about bamboo growing fast.
spk_0 I did appreciate the tour guide saying, and that means watching bamboo grow is slightly
spk_0 more interesting than watching paint dry.
spk_0 Yeah, that is true.
spk_0 Uh, it grows faster or boiling water, you know, um, that makes playing water a little
spk_0 more interesting as well.
spk_0 Yeah, I mean, it's not fast enough to like, you know, hit somebody, but it is fast enough
spk_0 to probably disorient disorient somebody.
spk_0 You know, someone even takes like a short rest, you know, midday in the forest and the,
spk_0 the bamboo grows up around them, all of a sudden now, they might not even recognize
spk_0 where they are.
spk_0 You know, a lot, a lot can happen to change the, the look and orientation of the forest
spk_0 during a short afternoon app.
spk_0 Well, you know, Ben, you're just reminding me, I believe, didn't you mention the character
spk_0 that had an intelligence of three?
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 I think that's what it's going to take to be confused by bamboo growing.
spk_0 I'm just saying.
spk_0 I don't know.
spk_0 I like that.
spk_0 I like that idea.
spk_0 And I like using disorient.
spk_0 I think that's a really cool way.
spk_0 I mean, we all understand bamboo grows, but it can change the, the, the, the, the mile,
spk_0 the mile markers that you've used to navigate the forest up to that point.
spk_0 And that can be very dangerous.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 I mean, I think you would probably have to sleep like dragon level sleep, maybe months or
spk_0 years, but, but I see what you're saying, because it can really change, because we are
spk_0 visual creatures and getting around in a forest is tough enough.
spk_0 And when things change and there's all the sudden a bamboo forest in your way that
spk_0 you didn't see before, it can get, it can get pretty tricky.
spk_0 I will say that if you can't, if you can't out dodge a growing piece of bamboo though,
spk_0 you're, you're in real trouble.
spk_0 Oh, yeah, you can definitely dodge it.
spk_0 It's more just not taking good stock.
spk_0 You know, you don't have GPS in the forest.
spk_0 So you gotta, you know, if your environment changes enough, you will get lost.
spk_0 And you know, it really messes with Dan is, is your trient guide that you want to use
spk_0 to get through the forest, because by the time they finish their poem, I can guarantee
spk_0 that bamboo has changed the landscape.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 And then the growing bamboo becomes part of the poem.
spk_0 Then you gotta listen to that as well.
spk_0 But getting lost, you know, this is an important part of this lore because many people,
spk_0 especially good attractive ones, and I believe you guys, you know, would have said that I might
spk_0 get lost in the forest.
spk_0 And this is where my charm and my good looks are going to come back to bite me here, gentlemen,
spk_0 because that's who they go after.
spk_0 Dryads capture the good looking people who wander through the forest and they kidnap them
spk_0 using charm spells.
spk_0 This I think, you know, dryads seem to be these nice little forest creatures, but it turns
spk_0 out that they're evil kidnappers who should be, should be absolutely brought up on some
spk_0 kind of charges, but somehow shriants protect them, which we're going to get to in a second.
spk_0 So this is where I think this whole world goes topsy-turvy.
spk_0 Well, I don't know, Dan.
spk_0 I mean, that seems you accused me in an earlier episode of being judgmental.
spk_0 I'm not sure, you know, inviting good looking people to spend time in the forest in a relaxing
spk_0 way is evil.
spk_0 I, you know, I think we're jumping to conclusions here, but I do think I have to
spk_0 admit, as much as I'm a quantum guy, I think Ben, this does lend support to your electromagnetic
spk_0 theory, because I think the easiest way to charm people is through additional sort of
spk_0 electromagnetic pulses to their brain, right?
spk_0 And so if they are, you know, deeply connected with the electromagnetic fields around them
spk_0 through their Wi-Fi and others, and it also could be a way for them to play cool Spotify,
spk_0 song lists that draw you into the forest, which as part of the charm, right?
spk_0 Because if they're in that local Wi-Fi.
spk_0 So anyway, I see a good connection here with the electromagnetic and Ben.
spk_0 I don't know if you would concur with that or go a different way.
spk_0 Well, a good song list is definitely a key to seduction Ben.
spk_0 Don't forget about that.
spk_0 That's for sure.
spk_0 I mean, I think it also just goes to the, you know, you need, you know, you need the dryads
spk_0 need, you know, a little bit of help, whether it's, you know, you know, whether it's, you
spk_0 know, some fertilizer for their oak tree, whether it's sweeping up, whether they, you know,
spk_0 just want some, you know, take out, because, you know, they're sick of sunshine for food.
spk_0 You know, the beauty of charming these beautiful men that come into the forest is that they now
spk_0 have a gopher.
spk_0 They have someone to run errands for them.
spk_0 And everybody needs an errand boy.
spk_0 And I don't see what's wrong about the dryads using charm to get their own.
spk_0 I have to say I didn't expect you guys to turn kiddabbing into such a positive thing here.
spk_0 I think, you know, Chris Hansen would have a field day with the two of you.
spk_0 I think if we're trying to catch a predator here, we'll get to that in a second here.
spk_0 I like that.
spk_0 I like your magnetic, but you know, when we're talking about forests, what about, you know,
spk_0 what about fungal pheromones?
spk_0 What about mind controlling, you know, fungal pheromones?
spk_0 Are always great Dan.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 I think so.
spk_0 But this could be another way.
spk_0 You know, we got spores get inside your brain, messed things up, mind controlling parasites.
spk_0 We talk about a bunch.
spk_0 You know, there could be something else at play here.
spk_0 You know, corniceps, who knows?
spk_0 They may not go quite the last of us route, but they will stick around for a long time.
spk_0 Because remember, it's nearly half of the people taken, never return home.
spk_0 And the ones that do have been gone a long time.
spk_0 So I'm not saying this isn't a consensual situation.
spk_0 I'm just saying that, you know, if you're drugging someone up and getting them high on all sorts of fungus,
spk_0 Bill and Simon, you know, marijuana and keeping them for a long period of time,
spk_0 I just think it should be investigated as all I'm saying.
spk_0 Okay.
spk_0 You know, you're making a good case, Dan.
spk_0 You're getting me more on your side, particularly, you know, the chemical route does feel a little more insidious.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 Actually also very, very likely.
spk_0 I mean, you are right.
spk_0 We are in a forest situation.
spk_0 And many, many trees live in harmony with the natural fungi around them.
spk_0 And so I think there is a lot to be said that, you know, this either way,
spk_0 whether you're talking electromagnetic, a really good Spotify playlist or fungus,
spk_0 I think this is a great example of a natural charming rather than a magical charming,
spk_0 like an unexplained charming.
spk_0 I think this is, right.
spk_0
spk_0 You know, this has got a solid physics and biological grounding by any mechanism.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 That's true.
spk_0 I mean, I understand what you're saying about magical versus natural.
spk_0 And you know, you and I always pump heads on what exactly what natural means.
spk_0 But like our charm, I would be, yeah, okay, that's normal.
spk_0 If someone wanted to stay in our presence, you know, because of things we said or did is different,
spk_0 this seems to be enhanced by the pharmaceutical properties of the things around them that
spk_0 may not be in the best interest of the person being kept.
spk_0 So I can't believe I've got to like sell kidnapping to you on the dryets.
spk_0 And since that's literally their defining characteristic.
spk_0 But, but, you know, maybe, look, maybe it's like I dream a genie or something like that.
spk_0 They've got this cool little world inside of these trees that the people love to stay in.
spk_0 And they enjoy their time there, you know, the, the dry to make themselves attractive.
spk_0 So, you know, who am I to say?
spk_0 Maybe this isn't captivity.
spk_0 Maybe it's paradise.
spk_0 That's exactly right, Dan.
spk_0 I mean, the, the dryets are, you know, charming and create this great environment for their,
spk_0 their errand boys.
spk_0 A cool vibe.
spk_0 I think the kids say that they got a good vibe.
spk_0 A cool vibe.
spk_0 It's amazing there.
spk_0 But, you know, it is, it certainly is a little fake and not letting them have free will to leave.
spk_0 Yeah, that's a little problematic.
spk_0 It is.
spk_0 Yes, it is.
spk_0 Thank you for admitting that, Ben.
spk_0 I'm glad you came around on that.
spk_0 I was starting to worry about you.
spk_0
spk_0 Yes, it's a little, a little problematic is a, is an understatement for sure.
spk_0 Especially when you consider that another one of their powers,
spk_0 and this goes back to your quantum waviness, Ben, and which I'd love to say,
spk_0 is these dimensional doors.
spk_0 So, in some evolutions, they can only create a door.
spk_0 Back to their oak trees.
spk_0 They can go in, they can walk into one tree and then they end up in their home oak tree.
spk_0 And then later evolutions have a dryet basically emerging from any tree within its terrell or tarot.
spk_0 So, this also speaks that quantum waviness and, and the fact that they could hide their,
spk_0 I don't know, kidnepies, charmed, their partners.
spk_0 I don't know what we're talking about where the spectrum is on this right now.
spk_0 Completely out of sorts here.
spk_0 But you could hide them anywhere.
spk_0 Should you want to do that?
spk_0 But who knows why you would want to do that?
spk_0 If it's consensual.
spk_0 I think there's a lot going on here in my mind and there is.
spk_0 There is.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 Though I do think that, so what I love about this,
spk_0 we've talked a lot about portable holes.
spk_0 We've talked a lot about quantum teleportation and stuff.
spk_0 And in a lot of the sort of applications we know of,
spk_0 the cool thing is the quantum teleportation involves entanglement,
spk_0 which I've already mentioned, our dryets being entangled with the oak potentially.
spk_0 But the long distance teleportation happens because you're in a vacuum,
spk_0 whether it's space or a vacuum tube or something like that.
spk_0 Right.
spk_0 This is dryets trying to teleport or do dimensional stuff in the forest.
spk_0 And what happens is when there's a lot of the rest of the world to interact with,
spk_0 your distance of quantum entanglement becomes much shorter
spk_0 and can quickly become incredibly short.
spk_0 So the fact, I love this realistic element that they can't just teleport anywhere.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 And to be honest, whether it's just their oak tree
spk_0 or just trees within the area in which their quantum entanglement works,
spk_0 I'm kind of happy with either.
spk_0 And it may be a species dependent thing.
spk_0 We've talked about this before.
spk_0 You know, when we look at the ecology of creatures in D&D
spk_0 and you find a conflict, it is probably just divergent evolution of a very similar species
spk_0 with slightly different abilities.
spk_0 Makes sense.
spk_0 So I feel like it's very likely that both occur and it's just different types of dryets.
spk_0 Okay.
spk_0 I think that makes sense.
spk_0 I mean, it is an interesting part of what they do, right?
spk_0 These little...
spk_0 Oh, it very much is.
spk_0
spk_0 And I want to quickly mention here for you Ben.
spk_0 I just want to mention the reproduction because this,
spk_0 I've never heard of anything like this before.
spk_0 But dryets are always female.
spk_0 They can mate with humanoids and elves, including saters.
spk_0 But their offspring will always be female dryets unless they mate with a satyr.
spk_0 And satyr offspring, at least saters are always male.
spk_0 This always seems to be very confusing.
spk_0 Because this really speaks to XY dominance at the genetic level.
spk_0 So if you can comment on that or just let me...
spk_0 Your awkward silence will say more and I'll move on if that's the route you choose to go down.
spk_0 Well, it's not necessarily an XY thing.
spk_0 I mean, XY is a human thing specifically.
spk_0 There's all sorts of different versions of sexual chromosomes in the
spk_0 in the wide world of biology.
spk_0 So I think it's probably has way more to do with how you combine a human and dryad
spk_0 so genome that results in the female dryad,
spk_0 whereas the satyr somehow is perhaps a more dominant genome.
spk_0 And that's why you end up with a satyr and not a dryad.
spk_0 Got it.
spk_0 Okay.
spk_0 I think that makes sense or a genetic biologist out there.
spk_0 But that seemed crazy to me as the average solution in the world.
spk_0 Interspecies, sex chromosomes, working.
spk_0 That's, yep, that's how it works.
spk_0 Take it to work.
spk_0 Well, yeah, and I think it's amazing that you just have these cross species viable
spk_0 on mating, right?
spk_0 Because that's not as common.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 Yeah, the whole idea of a half-elves wild when you really think about it.
spk_0 It is.
spk_0 And speaking of interspecies,
spk_0 we got to answer this question.
spk_0 We promised it in our last episode.
spk_0 But we have to explain the dryad-tree-ant connection.
spk_0 For some reason, trance care very deeply about dryads.
spk_0 And dryads, I can't tell if they're agnostic towards trance,
spk_0 but they certainly don't keep little trance in their home and collect them.
spk_0 So I'm trying to figure out their connection here.
spk_0 So I'm going to go with you first,
spk_0 and what do you think's going on here?
spk_0 Because it's definitely weird.
spk_0 All right.
spk_0 Well, I personally think I'm going to go back to Tolkien here.
spk_0 I think this is a missing the entwine situation.
spk_0 Okay.
spk_0 Right.
spk_0 I think the trance have done a sort of
spk_0 substitution, or what is it like when you have a psychologist and you project onto them?
spk_0 There's a word for that.
spk_0 Someone can tell us the connection.
spk_0
spk_0 I don't know.
spk_0 Our transposition.
spk_0 I don't know.
spk_0 Anyway, it could be.
spk_0 There were places where...
spk_0 There were places where...
spk_0 And this is a good thing for our audience to look up.
spk_0 But anyway, I think that's what's happening.
spk_0 That's why I think you're finding the dryads to be kind of agnostic or not
spk_0 deeply involved in this relationship,
spk_0 because they're not missing that same thing.
spk_0 So I think this is
spk_0 a longing on the part of the trance for the entwines.
spk_0 I like it.
spk_0 All right.
spk_0 What about you Ben?
spk_0 What do you think's going on here?
spk_0 I think it's more that the trance are the gardeners of the forest.
spk_0 And so one, they want to protect the trees.
spk_0 So that inherently,
spk_0 the dryads being like the spirit of the oak trees,
spk_0 they have a compassion for those trees and want to protect them.
spk_0 Sure.
spk_0 And the spirits, which are the dryads.
spk_0 But I think also maybe the dryads with their errand boys,
spk_0 that maybe they're taking a little bit of the load off of the trance.
spk_0 Maybe they're doing some of that gardening and upkeep of the forest.
spk_0 And so the trance just like them as a labor savings device.
spk_0 Sure.
spk_0 It's a mutualistic situation here.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 I like that.
spk_0 I like that these pool boys are getting very involved in the situation here.
spk_0 You know, I've got something here that I'm kind of working through, guys.
spk_0 I think that the dryads might be involved in the triant reproduction process.
spk_0 I don't know how.
spk_0 I don't know if they act as midwives and some way, shape or form.
spk_0 I don't know if they help with the sap and my previous borderline poorly thought out explanation.
spk_0 But I think they might be vital to the cause.
spk_0 And if they're vital to a trance reproduction cycle,
spk_0 which already seems very difficult as it is,
spk_0 that maybe their being part of that process makes them valuable to the trance.
spk_0 So they must protect them for their own survival.
spk_0 And the dryad could, you know, care less,
spk_0 but is it happy to be involved in the situation?
spk_0 And I'm guessing that the triant keeps quiet about all the people that they're storing in their little tree.
spk_0 So, you know, the tree keeps us mouth shut and the dryad helps them reproduce,
spk_0 which is how I think that's how the world really works, especially in the forest.
spk_0 That is that is a nice, thoughtful idea, Dan.
spk_0 You like that in plus?
spk_0 It's a beautiful relationship.
spk_0 It certainly is.
spk_0 And plus, I go from my, you know, I kind of turn and went towards a Ben's dark view of the forest.
spk_0 Yeah, but secrets kept, secrets were not revealed.
spk_0 Yeah, someone has to plant those triant seeds.
spk_0 And who better than the dryad's air and voice?
spk_0 Exactly.
spk_0 Well, who better is what I like to say?
spk_0 And if you know who's better, if you've got someone who might make a good acorn barrier,
spk_0 you know, squirrels do a great job of that as well.
spk_0 Or if you want to be, you know, a pool boy yourself for one of these dryads,
