spk_0 Cricket at O. It's a website. It's a podcast. It's a way of life. Okay, it's getting a hangover here.
spk_0 Oh, it's Peter Lawler over here. And welcome to Cricket at O. You're independent cricket podcast.
spk_0 Things have changed since last week. We're on Earth a U piece. Like you're in a hall of mirrors.
spk_0 Well, they're Paris, you're on the surface of her side. What is that behind you?
spk_0 Uh, it is a pretty grand mirror, isn't it? You can't see the balls. What are the back of my head, can you?
spk_0 I'm actually in, I'm on Sandy Bay Road in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. Yeah.
spk_0 Good part of the world, just to put it in. You know, that, uh, St. George's,
spk_0 just just up from battery point there. Not from the Sandy Bay Road bakery,
spk_0 where I did a lot of work on Tim Watson's, Tim Payne's book. Yeah. When I was writing Tim Payne's book,
spk_0 he looked at the road there. It's supposed to go. It's a sense, is it? It's, uh, the sense we
spk_0 summer in the rest of Australia. It's so damn cold here. But Tasmanians don't seem to notice. They
spk_0 will get around in their shorts. I recall that I would sit doing Tim's book and he would be in his
spk_0 shorts and I'd have like five layers of clothes on and just get hypothermia nonetheless.
spk_0 They're weird down here. I'm, you're back in the, um, Cogatoreum. I am back in the Cogatoreum,
spk_0 just, just pro-ten. Um, so I'm about to meet my state agent and, uh, and I'm hot spotting at
spk_0 all my phone because I don't have internet anymore. I was sort of gradually just staged with draw
spk_0 for my house and, uh, yes, my life's in flux, but hopefully all that will be resolved present
spk_0 but in the meantime Pete, it's your favourite time of the year.
spk_0 Which is, of course, the great Australian battle. How's it all going?
spk_0 Better than this podcast. I'm sorry people, we're having a few internet problems here.
spk_0 Before we move off from, okay, okay, okay, just before we get onto that greater strand path off.
spk_0 One, where's the cat? I haven't been greeted by a vision of its aynas.
spk_0 At any point during this podcast. Does it move to us?
spk_0 No, no, no. Most of the books, uh, most of the furniture and the cat have all gone into storage.
spk_0 Well, not into storage, um, is the cat has come to live with Janine and myself in St. Kielber.
spk_0 And she's, she's adapted to it seamlessly. She's loving it, in fact, getting more attention
spk_0 than ever. Got a drug habit yet.
spk_0 Okay.
spk_0 She's all right. Um, is, is, have you, have any cricket at home?
spk_0 Listeners have been through the place and kicked the tyres and perhaps interested in buying
spk_0 a car. I don't know. I don't know. I steer clear of the place when, when people are coming through
spk_0 for inspection. Nothing worse than people sort of ferriting around in your stuff.
spk_0 I think I've still got all my wisdoms up there. Now I've gone missing. Uh, yeah,
spk_0 always well. So far, uh, uh, at the only disappointment my weekend was, um, I got washed out.
spk_0 The air is first round, got washed out, which is unusual for us, but, uh, but we had to sit
spk_0 out. So, uh, we will talk a little bit of club cricket later. Um, but, uh, but in the meantime,
spk_0 the bet off piece, the bad off your favourite time of year. Tell us how is it unfolding as the
spk_0 greatest Australian people? Yep. The greatest dream that off is it's gone up and not to get you.
spk_0 I think at least in terms of recognition, have you come across this fantastic thing
spk_0 that code sports are doing? No. No. Well, they have got this, uh, what would you call it? It's
spk_0 kind of like a bat off generator machine that they've developed. Right. Uh, in which they've got
spk_0 all the candidates listed. Uh, it's, it's very informative. And, and I can't find it on my machine
spk_0 right now, but basically they've gone to crash. They've gone to Ben. They've gone to Dan,
spk_0 Journey, they've gone to Tim Mitchell, which is the internet guy there. And they've listed
spk_0 the candidates in this year's greatest fame bet off. They've given them an expert's ranking.
spk_0 So, for instance, crash, journey, a Mitchell have got Labushane listed as the number one candidate.
spk_0 We're, we appear to be only batting off for one spot here.
spk_0 Corn has given, is constus, so he's number one candidate. But it basically it's Labushane
spk_0 constus, weather-old Marcus Harris. Remember Marcus Harris? Nathan McSweeney,
spk_0 Almate Harrison. Uh, remember Renshore. Uh, Bankroft and there's, they've thrown in an outsider,
spk_0 young Campbell Callow. Yeah. Yeah. Probably got a duck. Got a second.
spk_0 Yeah. So then, uh, so they basically built a chart where, uh, a graph where you can actually,
spk_0 track the performance of these badders. Or as they say it, they're keeping
spk_0 their, what are they doing? Our experts will have their nose to the ground getting the latest
spk_0 whispers. That must be painful for them anyway. There's, you know, the best way to get a whisper
spk_0 with your nose. No. But Matthew Renshore has burst out the gate.
spk_0 Yeah. The first hundred of the first class season. Two later. Two later. It's all over.
spk_0 Well, Manus Labushane is, um, is, I think he's still in as we, as we do this pod. So, uh,
spk_0 so no real surprise there. You know, I sort of expected to become like, what's the first class runs?
spk_0 He's not going to leave any stone unturned in the person in the spot. Uh, McSweeney's failed. Has
spk_0 he Bankroft failed? Patterson failed? Constus failed. Um, yes. If, if, if, if, if, was he had caught
spk_0 Jake Weatherall, he would have failed, but he's gone on to get 67. Marcus Ares failed to dive in
spk_0 that, uh, in that chill game and he's running himself out for the 61. So, um, missed opportunity for him.
spk_0 One person who's not in their calculations is Mitchell Marsh, Pete. Well, that's another,
spk_0 well, it's, it's, it's, it's a good suggestion that, and let's keep you on the lay there. But just
spk_0 getting into the battle for us, uh, weather, I was first out of the box. He was first of 50,
spk_0 and it was, I saw two headlines that he was, that he, he'd state the claim for a test place.
spk_0 Yeah. I, um, I think it's a little, it's a little, um, it's, it's a little bit comparing apples
spk_0 and oranges at the moment, isn't it? Because have you, did you get a chance to tune in to the game at
spk_0 the Wacker? No, that's a nightmare. That's a nightmare for me. Yeah. Yeah. That is really difficult.
spk_0 I mean, Constus was failed twice. I'm not making any excuses. Well, about us over there. But
spk_0 if you're, if you're, um, minus Labushane and Osmond Koaja, those guys, you want to be batten
spk_0 on, on that AB field, that, that, that, you just fill your pockets with runs up there on the AB
spk_0 field. So I don't know how many, how much they will expose themselves. If I'm Osmond Koaja,
spk_0 I'm putting, I'm putting that in, it's in my pocket and going home. Um, a few people are saying
spk_0 that that Labushane 100, that's it. Yeah. Races over. All Labushane need us to do is get a 100,
spk_0 and he'll go through. So he might, he might damage his chances by playing in any more
spk_0 shill games. Yeah. Well, I'd like to see him keep playing in shill games.
spk_0 Is that for him? Is that for him opening or betting it three?
spk_0 Well, it's opening. I, the way I read this, it's not spelled out, but it's only the
spk_0 openness position is up for grabs, even though even the camera green spelling and number four
spk_0 for Western Australia. And bowl these first first plus overs in 12 months in this game.
spk_0 And got to work it with these second delivery. Did you see the catchy top of slips?
spk_0 I did. Yeah. Wow. Yeah. I, I put him in for a slip. I'm, I'm bad at number three on the
spk_0 strength of be slip catching the line. Sorry. So, and yes, it's very early, very early doors here.
spk_0 It's the same question. So we keep going back to it. You're not convinced about Cam and green
spk_0 at number three. I'm not, I don't know what they can do. I can't see them dropping. I can't
spk_0 see them dropping slug, unless he fails. No, maybe not. Maybe I was saying that because I'm in
spk_0 both as manual while we record. Yeah. It was interesting that he was asked, wasn't he,
spk_0 about the idea of betting three end bowling overs? And he thought maybe if it, if it did prove
spk_0 difficulty, then then Webster could bowl additional overs to it to make up for. I still think
spk_0 he looks a more natural player at, at number four or five. And I still can't quite see any
spk_0 reason why Steve Smith can't bet three except. No, I've, I've, all of those reasons.
spk_0 Right. I agree with you entirely, but it just looks like that's the way it is. And I pay.
spk_0 Oh, most, they're quite a lot of, you'd have to think more people are more comfortable betting
spk_0 four and five than three. Just interesting. I assume you put a copy right on the greatest
spk_0 training bet off because I think it was your formulation, originally, wasn't it? It was one of those
spk_0 little praises that I sing out to the world. It's roots and got quite popular. Yeah. I should have
spk_0 been an advertiser, I think not journalism. We're so obsessed this time of year, always
spk_0 with the top three, aren't we? Forget about everything else. We don't get who's taking
spk_0 wickets as a slow baller. We don't care who's, who's bowling a quick spell. And as you say,
spk_0 it is kind of difficult to evaluate top three runs when so much depends on luck. So much depends
spk_0 on conditions. So much can depend on injury. You know, this time last year, I think we all had
spk_0 Cameron Bankroft, inked in as a, as a, as a good, as a good chance starter in the, in the series
spk_0 again, didn't yet, but he just kept stringing failure after failure after failure. That's quite
spk_0 hard to gotten that. You're right, aren't you? Yeah. Are we ended up with Nathan McTwenty? But are you
spk_0 now going to throw Mitch Marsh's name into the next thing? Well, it's funny. I was thinking when I was
spk_0 watching him on Saturday night, Mike. Yeah, that's good news. It was scary stuff. It was scary stuff.
spk_0 You know, if you've been serious, where on earth do you bow to? Perfectly acceptable kind of
spk_0 length deliveries. It just seemed like he could hit every single ball before. It was just a matter
spk_0 of where. So, you know, when he's in formula, that he does look absolute. You're also going to,
spk_0 and it reminded me that a few years ago, Greg Chapel said, Mitch or Marsh, test opener.
spk_0 I think we all scoffed at the time, but there's a left field thought.
spk_0 Pitch is going to, if it's going to be, if it wait, maybe if it was flat wickets, like it was in
spk_0 Australia five or six years ago, there you give a consideration. The ball, the double-lankered
spk_0 cookabout is done. Maybe just a little bit too much over the last few seasons for a Marshall
spk_0 like option. So, maybe his chance has come and gone, but my word, he looked authoritative
spk_0 on Saturday night. And his record, his last sevennings, 54, 88, 18, 18, 85, 9, not out, and 103,
spk_0 not out. And he was the difference between the two sides on Saturday.
spk_0 Made that 100 in England, in the ashes. Here's a question. If you could be in Basmicale's skin,
spk_0 column, who would you open with? Who would England open with? If England had to choose 11 Australians.
spk_0 Okay, right. So, I'm not choosing, am I pretending that the Australians are English?
spk_0 It's quite a stretch. I'll make it simpler for you. Pretend that Basmicale's Australian coach.
spk_0 Yeah, well, he would be interested in ceiling, wouldn't he? He'd be looking in how good the
spk_0 player could be rather necessarily their last dance meetings. So, yeah. So, there's that.
spk_0 I'm channeling Basmicale. He wouldn't be choosing Nathan McSweeney.
spk_0 No. And he probably wouldn't be choosing, wouldn't be choosing,
spk_0 Cameron Bancrofty wouldn't be choosing Marcus Harris. Probably wouldn't be choosing,
spk_0 I don't think. I was just going to say he's probably managed to lose him an out by now.
spk_0 I think he might have. Yeah. Yeah. I think he might be thinking about weather-old.
spk_0 That's a kind of a Basmicale pick. The guy who looks the part, you know, and weather-old,
spk_0 even when he's not making runs, always looks like he knows where he's doing. He's got lovely technique.
spk_0 He's very good to look at in the same way as Zach Crawley's.
spk_0 There's a bit about weather-olds. There is. Judging my last use for him, he's the
spk_0 infamous Australian first class batterer. He's sort of get out.
spk_0 I know you've bad as mine too. He might actually opt. Marsh and constus.
spk_0 And back in the mid-game. For the next ten years, the job is that.
spk_0 Oh my goodness. He's a maternity contract.
spk_0 Yeah, we had been discussing that spot for ages. Funny, I had it caught up on the phone with David
spk_0 Wanner during the week. I don't think he'll get. It just makes it so easy when you can lock in that
spk_0 one opener, or those two open, it doesn't for a long time. I would bless our Warner for that
spk_0 that decade plus. He made that so much easier.
spk_0 Is he talking about a comeback yet? Is he available? Surely he's available.
spk_0 Talk him into it. Get the exclusive.
spk_0 Our relationship almost didn't survive. He's last suggested a comeback.
spk_0 You can make it go. I was I mean, I'm not going to repeat what I said. I kind of wish I'd never
spk_0 said it. I wouldn't you love him to sort of surges way through the pack and announces
spk_0 of availability and wait for the nation's call. Yeah, yeah. Well, I don't think it's going to happen
spk_0 about anyway. Yeah. All right. Well, we know none the wives are there. In fact, we're dumb
spk_0 other than when we started because you're trying to. You try to match Marsh into the mix just to
spk_0 muddy the waters a little bit more. Women's World Cup Pete, where are we up to?
spk_0 Well, the India Pakistan, India and Pakistan played off last night in a repeat,
spk_0 in there were repeat scenes from the man's match. Hello, perhaps not.
spk_0 No, I don't think it was as bad as the Asia Cup men's matches. Nonetheless, there were no handshakes
spk_0 at the start of the game. No handshakes at the end of the game. We kind of knew that was going to
spk_0 happen and didn't send or affect the match too much. Well, did you see what happened at the top skits?
spk_0 No, Tommy. The Pakistan skipper was a Fatima Saini. Fatima Saini.
spk_0 The Kairns. The match referee and Mel Jones, who was announcing third heads. It landed heads.
spk_0 I said, you're cool. All right, okay. In other circumstances, we'd be talking about that for two
spk_0 decades. The fix was in. George Blimpham said, the famous boxing match. Then there was the
spk_0 rather interesting run out with Manibir Haali toward the end, but those they were.
spk_0 That's just matching. They didn't seem to be any additional acrimony upon above them beyond that,
spk_0 which the BCCI and the BJP have imposed upon their quickers when these games happened.
spk_0 It does seem to be the case that we're now at the stage where any gesture of sportsmanship or
spk_0 civility towards Pakistan would be interpreted by anti-national. It'll be like chamber and like
spk_0 a piece. The idea is probably true for Pakistan's players. Yeah, absolutely. I mean,
spk_0 Pakistan has been as much to blame in a lot of this as India to my mind. Look, well, in their
spk_0 behaviours, maybe not in that sort of structural thing around the handshake. Yeah, I look at some,
spk_0 we're now reached the point where there's almost nothing to be done about it. And I'd
spk_0 say this will gratify the brainwashed BJP trolls who hate watches, but who else? I wonder.
spk_0 What did you think of Athos suggestion that maybe the ICC stop reaking every draw
spk_0 to maximize the opportunities for these two teams to play each other because it's just become
spk_0 unseemly real. That would be hard for the game to say no to money, wouldn't it?
spk_0 Hard for most people to say no to money. Yeah, it is hard for the game to say no to money.
spk_0 But you've got to think that, you know, LET would be pretty happy to see this too. I mean,
spk_0 the objective of terror is to sow discord, isn't it? To crumple and then and spread hate. So I
spk_0 think LET would be delighted to see Indians and Pakistanis spitting at each other. You know,
spk_0 the jihadists want to hot war in Kashmir. So we're so
spk_0 to fail to see how falling in mind with this benefit is anyone. But no, well, and as you say,
spk_0 I mean, there's a lot of antithetically in England, in India towards the very fact that this game
spk_0 was being conducted. People were angry with the BCCI and the government for letting it go ahead.
spk_0 They would be happy with that. And there was, while we're in India, Australia A play they're
spk_0 last matching camp or last night. I've lost track of time. I love it, can't for almost a sellout
spk_0 crowd. Yeah, right. Yeah. It was amazing crowd turned up for the game. Well, they got a better
spk_0 crowd than they did for Westerners versus India, didn't they? Oh, my goodness. Yeah.
spk_0 You know, when you don't feel a, feel a ground for an Indian test match,
spk_0 yeah. Look on my works. You might be in despair. That was pretty grim, wasn't it?
spk_0 A pretty grim. Yeah, I went out to make myself a piece of toast in a cup of tea and the test was over.
spk_0 I've never, that was such a lackluster performance by the West Indians in that,
spk_0 when they in their last earnings, their batting performance was really poor.
spk_0 And generally, a sort of a low intensity test, wasn't it? You know, the gap between the two sides
spk_0 was so palpable, it was almost a question of simply going through the motions.
spk_0 Makes you start, I think maybe two divisions should could be a thing. I mean, is it an amazing,
spk_0 you know, the West Indians beat Australia just last year in a test match at the GABA, but they have
spk_0 fallen so far off the pace that, yeah, I think you're right. You know, that they are making a very
spk_0 solid argument for two divisions right before our eyes. There's another series on that we've
spk_0 completely forgotten. You know, Australia, I think, Australia men's team is playing well.
spk_0 That's, well, I've observed before the, the, the, oh, the mid-master.
spk_0 The mid-master. Yeah. I've forgot the context of the games. And one of those, and one of those was
spk_0 a wash out. So, so the series, it's one of those series that's over before almost, you know,
spk_0 it's going on. They renamed it the beige oval or something for the series because of some sort of
spk_0 animal. Yeah, it was quite cute. I noticed that the, the Chapel Headley trophy was on the line.
spk_0 Awesome. For those of us who'd almost forgotten, the Chapel Headley trophy exists.
spk_0 So, obviously, it's been gathering dust at CA for, I think, the last 10 years or so.
spk_0 Someone remembered, oh, yeah, remember, we play for that. Anyway, you can go back in the,
spk_0 in the, in the broom cupboard at CA. Is that still an annual event? Did, did, did, just don't
spk_0 click it agree to make that an annual event on the back of that first day night test?
spk_0 I think it was, that was, we should know those things, didn't we? But, but, you know, it never came
spk_0 to fruition and it probably would have required a four-year month year for it to be fitted in.
spk_0 Hmm. Oh, you never know. They can have daylight saving, they can have a four-year month year.
spk_0 Now Pete, you also observed something that Westerners cricket, the loss of, of a certain special
spk_0 someone. Yeah. Yeah. Burn a julien. If you, of a certain age, you'll remember Burn a julien,
spk_0 you would have seen him play with Newt Gillian. I do, yes. I do. I do. I do. I do. I do. You got him on
spk_0 the cover of Ashley Grace Book here. There he is over on the, that's right. Just hold that up
spk_0 to everyone listening to the podcast. Yeah. Yeah. That's Ashley Grace Book, the unforgiven, isn't it?
spk_0 Yeah. Yeah. And I'm just looking up. I was just looking up a chapter about,
spk_0 that, that, that, in that book, yeah, Burn a julien for, for those of you who don't know, it was a
spk_0 very stylish, uh, Western, the, in all-rounder of the, of the 1970s. Uh, looking up, he's
spk_0 record. It's actually not bad. He took 50 wickets at 37. He made eight hundred and eight hundred and
spk_0 sixty six runs at 30. He made a couple of test hundreds. He made a, he made a very important
spk_0 26, not out in the 75 World Cup Final. Uh, it took a lot of wickets in that, in that, in that,
spk_0 in that, um, event. Actually, he took four for against Sri Lanka and New Zealand, I think,
spk_0 and two for in the final at Laws. Indeed. And he also, people might have forgotten this,
spk_0 but I remember it very well. He was the opening partner for Roy Fredericks in Perth when Fredericks made
spk_0 that hundred and sixty nine off a hundred and forty odd balls. They put, they put, they put julien
spk_0 up to open the batting because I think they dropped Greenwich and they didn't pick Bateshin.
spk_0 Yeah. And julien was the like, this silent partner he put on 25, well, they, well, they put on 91
spk_0 and, and Roy Fredericks went crazy. He was a, he could, he swung the ball a long way and he was
spk_0 had a really nice composed sound defensive technique. He probably should have, um, lasted longer
spk_0 at test level. It was, um, it was just such a huge amount of Western Indian talent around that,
spk_0 at that time, but he has passed, he, in the age of 75. He has passed the, he made a century at
spk_0 Lord's, didn't you, Gideon? You've been looking at me for three. Yeah. Yeah. Well, if I, I've been in
spk_0 home, I would have reached immediately for that book. It's by my desk at the moment, actually,
spk_0 24 test matches. But, no, there could, he, there wasn't, he played in World Series cricket, didn't he?
spk_0 Yep. Yep. But more controversially, he was, and that's why he's seen, he naturally goes
spk_0 ball. He was, was a South African rebel tourist, which, which was controversial if you were a
spk_0 cricketer from Australia or England, but extremely controversial when you're a cricketer from
spk_0 West Indies. Yep. And you weren't treated very well at home. Anyway, the West Indies cricket board,
spk_0 put out a statement today. And I thought it was very interesting because it was very much the,
spk_0 well, I think the olive branch had been extended prior to this, but it said, it noted that his
spk_0 international career came to an end, following his participation in the 82 83 and the 83 84 tours
spk_0 of South Africa. It said those to fit, you know, it said, when the world of sport was sharply
spk_0 divided by the moral and political challenges of apartheid, those decisions reflected the difficult
spk_0 realities of that era and the pressures faced by players navigating competing demands of
spk_0 opportunity, conscience and circumstance. Yeah. As we, as we honor Bernard Julian, we also
spk_0 recognize the importance of reflection and inclusion. They're really quite a good statement that
spk_0 they put out. It goes on and on. So did you, do you remember the chapter in the unforgiven about,
spk_0 about Julian, about trying to make contact with him? Yeah. Extremely elusive. He'd suffered
spk_0 ill health and he was apparently a victim of depression and was it was someone who had
spk_0 kept the the creative establishment at arms length. And I mean, he basically, he,
spk_0 you know, from what other players are saying on that tour, he really had gone on it simply because
spk_0 he had no money. He was bad. Like any Westernian test player who'd fallen out of test calculations,
spk_0 they were subsisting on, you know, a modest stipend from domestic cricket. And I think he'd fall
spk_0 out of calculations at county level by that stage. He had previously played for Kent.
spk_0 He was a lot of force. Yeah, quite a number of those players. He was on the breadline, which is
spk_0 hard to believe now in this modern era, when there are so many good livelihoods around for players who
spk_0 you know, aren't anywhere near the the operational of so yeah, that is a very thoughtful
spk_0 announcement. Well, reflecting on the decline of West Indies cricket,
spk_0 I reckon one of the key factors in that decline is that when they were at their peak,
spk_0 they all played county cricket just about, didn't they? Yes. Say all but now they can't. I mean,
spk_0 those rules have changed, however they. It's also the players on his group. They were really,
spk_0 really good players. And they were a lot of them. And yes, and you're right, the number of vacancies
spk_0 in in county cricket has diminished. And the tendency is for counties to shine,
spk_0 sign players on shorter term contracts. There's not anywhere near the amount of first-class cricket,
spk_0 there's a lot of T20 cricket players go for, you know, it'll fight for contracts that don't last.
spk_0 But you're right. I mean, in some ways it was Australian players in the late 80s, early 90s,
spk_0 who took the place of West Indies players because they were keen and aggressive and eager to learn
spk_0 and good clubmen. And it was got pretty clear to the counties that the quality of West Indies players
spk_0 was diminishing and they weren't anywhere near as reliable or as committed.
spk_0 Kidian, you said that we would get back to grade cricket before this podcast was done.
spk_0 Right about this kid, Harjes Singh, who played out at Blacktown on the weekend. What do you know
spk_0 about his innings? Yeah, well, I watched the highlights, but they're probably, they're probably
spk_0 wasn't much more. So you can look it up on Fox Sports as has posted the live footage of his innings
spk_0 314 from 142 balls. Or at least the 25s, the 35s, sixes that he's hit in addition to
spk_0 12 fours. And it really, I know it probably sounds a little bit monotonous, but it is kind of
spk_0 nice to watch because so the camera station and the ground is empty. So you can hear the ball
spk_0 hitting the bat and you can hear the ball landing and clattering in the among the equipment and
spk_0 bouncing off the side screen and hitting the cars in the car park. And the camera doesn't move
spk_0 so you can see the bowl is shoulder slump. You can see the captain coming over to pat him on the back.
spk_0 You can feel the long weight for the return of the ball. The scoreboard gets a bit scrambled.
spk_0 It is like being in the game itself. I mean, we've all we've all been there when your club has
spk_0 got an absolute tailing from someone who's gone berserk, but I really, really felt for the Sydney
spk_0 guys who are fielding through this innings, which is a record, a record for a one day innings in
spk_0 Premier cricket in Australia, I think certainly in Sydney. And it's the second highest score, I think
spk_0 in grade cricket in Sydney, all told that the record was was picked the Trump as 335, which was
spk_0 the first over two day game back in 1903. He came in at number three. He came in at 11.
spk_0 You didn't want him patting against your club. I think they lost 10 cricket balls. He spent at
spk_0 an estimated value of 2000. Paul McGraw, get out to Pat and park. There's a few cricket
spk_0 homographs, he's an artist friend of ours who makes who makes art from cricket, lost cricket balls
spk_0 or found cricket balls or whatever they are. I had heard about him a bit earlier. He might make
spk_0 Dashaq Meta, who's obviously the chair of the Chapel Foundation. He got a call a couple of years ago,
spk_0 three years ago from Neil to Costa, the batting coach. He said, you got to come out and check out
spk_0 this kid. At the time, he was 16. I think he just become one of a bit handful of 16 year olds to
spk_0 ever make 800 in Sydney Pramiff, first grade cricket competition. I think the others are Steve Smith,
spk_0 Osman Kauajar, Nick Madison, Curtis Patterson, Arthur Morris, Ian Craig, and Bobby Simpson.
spk_0 He's done it when he was 8th youngest to score 100 in the men's first grade competition.
spk_0 Neil was saying at the time, he's a lock for a strength cricket. I don't know why he doesn't have a
spk_0 New South Wales contract. I tried to make some calls earlier, but no one wants to talk to me today.
spk_0 He has very good genes. His father was Punjabi's state boxing champ,
spk_0 and his mother was a state-level long jumper. He's grandfathered him to become a prick at us.
spk_0 So when he was young, he would get cash every time he scored a 50, but apparently grandpa had a file
spk_0 for bankruptcy after two seasons, so they stopped doing it. No, it's not true. He's not
spk_0 father didn't go bankrupt, but I will try and get to the bottom of why he, I haven't seen
spk_0 him around the New South Wales can. I think he will now. Pretty exciting. Just another indication
spk_0 of the changes coming over Australian cricket to a degree, isn't it, changing demographics of
spk_0 Australian cricket, seeing it in the crowds and on the fields. I was talking to a guy the other day
spk_0 about the start of the cricket season. I don't know if I mentioned this on the podium.
spk_0 I think I've seen that a handful of people use the nets in Maritville in the last month,
spk_0 as people shake off the cobwebs from the winter. Someone lives out further out in the suburbs
spk_0 where there's a lot of Indian and Pakistani and Bangladesh-y people said,
spk_0 the nets have been full of winter. Well, well, fathers who have had their sons and daughters
spk_0 in the nets, or winter, every night, the guys, it's got some watches, people training in the nets.
spk_0 It's not happening in the west, well. A cricket and a tell reader, Pat Rogers, was actually at the
spk_0 game on the cricket. Oh, he said that before play commenced, a few words were said in honor of
spk_0 four premier cricket stalwarts who had passed away since last season, including Bob Simpson,
spk_0 it was the record scorer for Singh's first-grade club, Western suburbs, and of course within two hours,
spk_0 Simpson's long-time record of 229 for the club has been broken. He also points out, Pat,
spk_0 and I like this. So he was his mind wandered to, I think the Trump is amazing innings, he's
spk_0 335 back in 1903, when you only got a 60-view hit out of the ground. That's one in redfern was it?
spk_0 That's right, that's right. And the Trump hit 225s. Every time you hit a 5, you had to change
spk_0 ends unless it was the last ball of the over. Right. But one of the hits famously went through
spk_0 the window of the boot factory across the way. And apparently the broken window was
spk_0 kept in its frame and displayed at the local leagues club for many years afterwards, touched by
spk_0 a holy Trumper's seeks. And Pat goes on to point out that one of Trump's New South Wales teammates
spk_0 from that era was a guy called Austin Diamond, who was a New South Wales captain in their period,
spk_0 and it is the diamond, the diamond of his name that inspired the diamond that now
spk_0 is on the caps of Western suburbs, and was on the helmet of Harvest Singh, a
spk_0 hard-easing as he made his 300-week end. Nice historical connection, Pat Rogers, thank you very much
spk_0 for that. God, that's some depth work in the rabbit hubs, should be working through cricket at
spk_0 all. I'm surprised that he was able to tear himself away from watching all those sixes, a thoughtful
spk_0 contribution from Pat, thank you kindly. Getting you sent out. So, but if you haven't
spk_0 watched it already, do check up on the highlights. You'll love them for the soundtrack of the
spk_0 the spectators who are cheering the sixes, but also the on-field noise of the field is trying to
spk_0 encourage the ballads. Go, Joey, they're like Dolly, come on, hunts. That's the
spk_0 ballad you've reached from parts to stuff. That's something that you're very familiar with,
spk_0 but me not so because I sort of tend to have a cricket in a professional manner, but those sounds
spk_0 of the sound of cricket, particularly I think of those sort of empty stadiums or empty grounds,
spk_0 where it somehow manages to keep the noise in. There's something very romantic about it.
spk_0 There is a such a tendor, a six that I remember in Nagpur. I'm out of the league because it bounced
spk_0 on the Tim Roof of the press box like that, and then you heard it roll down the gutter,
spk_0 floor lofted to the roof, and smash a crate of empty Coke bottles in a shot outside ground.
spk_0 Or you know the sound of Mitch Marsh hitting a ball. The sound of that sledge you,
spk_0 even the sound of the ball is deep when I run in.
spk_0 It makes a mighty clomp. It makes a mighty clomp as it leaves
spk_0 tidest things about this for sure.
spk_0 Yeah, he's a solid lad by the look of him.
spk_0 You get in us going to ask you, you've sent out a, what do we call these things?
spk_0 A post to the cricket adult sub-stack subscribers this morning,
spk_0 or urging people to become financial subscribers. Before we put the price up,
spk_0 this is CPI FX cricket adult like it affects everything.
spk_0 Well, we're converging once again on Craig's Argent Day, which is November 1st.
spk_0 That will be the great man's 74th birthday. That's the day when we turned on paid sums on
spk_0 cricket adult a year ago, and we are actually going to bump the price up for subscriptions after
spk_0 that date. At the moment, it's a hundred dollars per year and $20 per calendar month from,
spk_0 November 2nd, the birthday of Victor Trumper, where we're going up to $124 per year.
spk_0 Which is of course, Pete, as you and I both know.
spk_0 Craig's Argentire score in test cricket.
spk_0 It's $124.
spk_0 In a magnificent stand of $251,000, you know, $126.
spk_0 What's important to note with this price-tuned
spk_0 idiot is that anybody who has an existing subscription stays on the old rate.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 $100 a year, $20 a month.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 Cheap as cheap as $200.
spk_0 Till the record.
spk_0 Or if you've got a subscription, don't stress when I'm going to screw you
spk_0 any more money.
spk_0 But if you were considering getting a subscription for this asher summer,
spk_0 get in early and you'll get this cheaper rate.
spk_0 Yeah.
spk_0 The only thing you would need to check would be if you got yourself a new credit card and you
spk_0 need it to update on your details, but otherwise, as you were, if you're not a subscriber to
spk_0 the subsday, forget at r.com and you want the opportunity to subscribe at the bargain
spk_0 basement price of $100 a year.
spk_0 You've only got three weeks to do it.
spk_0 Some people's internet speeds are quite slow.
spk_0 How's that all we've got time for on cricket itself this week?
spk_0 I think it probably is, Pete.
spk_0 We'll be back this time next week with further developments in the Great Australian
spk_0 Badoff, an update on the women's world cup.
spk_0 Potentially further exploits from great cricket.
spk_0 Hopefully I'll get again this weekend.
spk_0 I got washed out last weekend.
spk_0 I might even tell you how my house has gone aroption.
spk_0 But in the meantime, it's goodbye from me.
spk_0 And it's good night from him.
